Goochland County public school students have begun returning to the classroom. On Oct. 13, the county school board voted in favor of a plan presented by school superintendent Dr. Jeremy Raley to transition all students back from the all-virtual education plan that has been in place since the start of the school year. The new plan called for students in grades K-5 to return to school five days a week beginning on Oct. 19. Students in sixth and ninth grades — those moving from elementary to middle school and from middle school to high school — are expected to begin attending class in-person two days a week starting on Nov. 2, and every other grade will attend in-person two days a week beginning Nov. 9. Fully virtual learning is still an option for any family, Raley insisted, and currently accounts

for about 50 percent of the overall school population’s preference. Raley also attempted to put to rest a rumor that some elementary school students would be taught by contracted workers, telling the board that all of the teachers are fully licensed and credentialed Goochland County Public School employees. While a number of parents during the public comment period expressed their support
for bringing students back into the classroom, several teachers expressed concern that the plan would unnecessarily put both staff and students at risk. Raley’s own enthusiasm for the new plan was tempered in part by the gravity of the pandemic, which has brought myriad challenges for school officials to overcome. “This is something no one asked for, and I hope we never have to see again,” said Raley of the many unprecedented obstacles administrators have faced in their attempt to ensure both continuity and
safety for county students. He cautioned that there would still be challenges ahead, and that things might feel a bit different than they once did, at least for the time being. Still, Raley said, he remains very proud of the tremendous work teachers and staff have done to make sure that the schools are ready to begin— at least in a modified way— where they left off when COVID-19 forced schools to shutter last March. Said Raley, “It is time to bring students back to school.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Still undecided? That’s OK By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As we close in on the end of the 2020 campaign season, most of us have made our choice and cast our ballot. Some of us, of course, are still weighing our options and trying to make the best choice, carefully considering our values and performing the kind of calculus that would hardly be worth it were the consequences not so dire. “I Heard” and “I Saw On The Internet,” those twin pillars of dubious information, are always waiting in the wings, eager to sway the opinions of those who may not have the inclination to do their own research. Research can be its own particular minefield: What, for example, constitutes “vetting”? If you had a question about General James Longstreet’s actions at Gettysburg, you could consult the work of the late preeminent Civil War historian
Shelby Foote, or you could Google it. To each his own, as they say, but I certainly would prefer the former if my life depended on getting the answer right. As we’ve all seen countless times in recent years, the truth can be difficult to suss out, particularly during campaign season. Sprinkle in a few half-truths and some things that are technically true but presented shamefully out of context, and one soon begins to wonder how it’s even possible anymore to be absolutely sure of anything. Of all the campaign strategies that have come up in recent years, perhaps the biggest head-scratcher is that of attempting to bully or shame people into seeing things a certain way.

In all seriousness, has this ever worked? No, as in so many other areas of life, when it comes to deciding who deserves your vote, the best method is not easy or sexy. It’s doing your research, checking your sources, questioning your own beliefs and sometimes being brave enough to change your mind. Of course you generally have to open your mind first, which in this Golden Age of echo chambers and feedback loops can be easier said than done. If you happen to find yourself, even at this late juncture, still unsure of how to cast your vote, please take heart: you are doing it right. Given how many people throughout our nation’s history have paid dearly for your right to vote, it is not a decision to be taken lightly. Don’t let anyone bully, shame or lead you astray with twisted logic or fudged “facts.” The choice is yours. Make it wisely.

Halloween magic remains for a new generation, even with a few tweaks By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
The holiday enjoys a sort of cultish popularity that appeals to almost everyone, and the single evening has the mystical power to bring out the spooky in all of us. It’s hard to imagine another celebration that invokes the sort of dedication
Halloween has become one of the biggest holidays in America. Never mind the fact it’s an unrecognized celebration, and not the first business or service has decided to supply a day off for a holiday that involves ghouls and goblins. But, one only has to drive down a darkened avenue to realize that Halloween has become big business and increasingly glorified, a far cry from the simple excitement the holiday provided in my childhood. Not unlike our nation, Halloween is a conglomerate of differing customs and rituals, some darker than others, with origins across the globe. It seems as if everyone who arrived in America from who could count how many distant shores each brought a bit of Halloween with them. As time passed, many of these international customs became instilled in that allows full-grown human our American Halloween beings to dress like cats or flytradition. ing bats. Golfing legend wins Dominion Energy classic Mickelson earns 2nd Champions Tour win with 17-under 199 By Dave Lawrence, Richmond Suburban Newspapers
RICHMOND – After playing two rounds – 36 holes – of golf on Saturday, Phil Mickelson would not have been blamed for calling it a day. But Mickelson, in his rookie year on the PGA Champions Tour, wasn’t happy sitting three strokes back of leader Mike Weir before Sunday’s final round of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic at the Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course. So, instead of heading back to the hotel, Mickelson went to the driving range to work on his swing. The extra practice helped. Mickelson went from three strokes back of Weir to three strokes ahead to claim his second Champions Tour win of the season. He shot a 7-under 65 in the final round on Sunday. “I didn’t strike it as well as I wanted to yesterday and I wanted to just get the timing back,” Mickelson said. “I had been hitting the ball really well coming in at points, but – especially with the irons – I didn’t quite yesterday, in yesterday’s 36-holes, play as well as I wanted to. I hit some shots that weren’t okay, that I needed to work on. “So, I just kind of found the rhythm a little bit and tried to incorporate that today. And I ended up improving on some shots. I think like the shot on 4 where I hit an 8-iron where there’s water tight to the pin and I hit it in there five feet

– that was a really good shot to have the confidence to take on that pin. And that comes from, like, last night. Kind of finding that rhythm and finding that swing that I wanted.” Mickelson maintained his reputation as a long hitter, averaging 299.7 yards over the three rounds. “It’s a huge – yeah, big – advantage when you’re carry-
ing the ball that far,” Weir said of Mickelson. “I kind of knew that going into this week. I felt as wet as it was, the longer players were going to have a nice advantage because there’s no run on the ball. … Yeah, I think anytime you have length like that, we see in the way the game’s played now, it’s a big advantage.” While Mickelson finished
with a 17-under-par 199, he struggled throughout the tournament to hit the greens in regulation. He hit 39-of-54 greens for a 72.2 percentage and a tie for 34th place among the tournament field. One of the shots Mickelson had to overcome was a wayward tee shot on the ninth hole. “That kind of fried me a
little bit,” Mickelson said. “I was able to play a good back nine, but you can’t, you can’t make those mistakes. And I was lucky to get away with it because I came back and played well. That’s something I’ve been working on and it will give me something to work on here in the coming weeks as we head into Augusta.
“But this was a good momentum start for me. I put a driver in that I haven’t used before, trying to get a little more pop for Augusta, a little bit more carry. It might have been a little bit offline at times, but I’m working with it and it was a good, successful week.” Once on the green, however, Mickelson was deadly, topping the field with an average of just 26.7 putts per round. “I putted really well and I hit the ball long, but I need to work a little bit on accuracy. It wasn’t too bad other than 9 where it went out of bounds,” he said. “I hit a lot of good short irons to give me some birdie putts. My short game was great, too. My chipping out of the rough, which is not easy, I hit a lot of really good shots close.” Mickelson played well out of the sand, too. After hitting his drive into a bunker adjacent to the 17th green, he made a nice pitch out to set himself up for a short putt for par – which he sank. While Mickelson’s worst shot of the day was on the ninth hole, his best shot of the day was on the par-4 15th. Mickelson hit a towering tee shot over trees and just over the pin. The ball landed on the green just feet away from the hole. He two-putted the green for a birdie. “It was the best swing of the day for me,” Mickelson said. “I needed to hit a good shot there and flew it right in the center. From where I was at, I thought it might even hit the pin. I didn’t realize it flew past, but I was just trying to get it anywhere on and it was dead solid.” While Weir, who finished with a 14-under 202, was unhappy with his putting in see Mickelson> 8

Collegiate tennis improves to 5-0 Staff Reports
To say Collegiate is opening 2020 on a dominant start to the season would be putting it lightly. The Cougars, who play their home matches at the Robins Campus in Goochland County, have won their first five team matches, going 34-1 in singles as they defeated St. Catherine’s – the team that beat them for the League of Independent Schools tournament championship in 2019 and finished one round better than them in the state finals – with a winning score of 6-1, and then routed Trinity 7-0. When breaking down the individual statlines, Collegiate played its most competitive singles sets yet against St. Catherine’s. The Cougars went into that Tuesday match
having recorded 13 10-0 wins, but the Saints prevented a single bagel, winning at least one game against each of the Cougars’ players. For Collegiate, senior Helena Huff defeated Madeliene Carithers 10-4, freshman Elizabeth Mendoza fended off Reagan Butler 10-5, senior captain Nora Willett powered past Lily Caldwell 10-1, senior Kayli Shenk from Powhatan out-dueled Lindsey Paulin 10-6, sophomore Lucy Ottley held off McKenly Thompson 10-5 and sophomore Emma Eldridge battled past Olivia Aghdami 10-5. Ava Dalton got the sole win for the Saints, fending off sophomore Claiborne Dillard 10-5. Collegiate dominated against Trinity on Thursday, notching five bagels in the
seven singles matches. The top three Cougars players all won 10-0, with Huff routing Lucy Rowe, Mendoza blanking Sophie Aprahamian and Willett trouncing Lucy Crichton. Shenk routed Gabby Strickler 10-1, Dillard bounced back to defeat Perrin Gilman 10-4, Ottley blanked Emma Smith 10-0 and Eldridge dominated against Clare Murphy 10-0. In Collegiate’s five exhibition matches against Trinity, McKenna Boardman blanked Brynn Giuerette 8-0, Malone Morchower routed Kate Hurtbert 8-0, Kylee Sanderson trounced Meredith McCray 8-0, Lucy Barnes defeated Emily Krickus 8-2 and Ann Carter Arendale won against Sonnie Kayer, 8-2.
While the Virginia High School League cross country season is still a ways away, Goochland High School runners Grace Juran and Reid Dameron, both seniors, were able to compete unattached on the first implementation of the reversed-course layout at Pole Green Park on Saturday, Oct. 10, with Hanover Elite XC Club hosting the 5k races. Challenges on the reversed course not only included the hills in the wooded sections of the course, but also the rain that fell throughout the day, making for a slippery series of races in the afternoon. Juran ran 12th in the girls open A race in 23:38, with the race being won by Hanover Elite XC’s Sibyl Harrell (21:26). Dameron was credited with placing eighth in the boys open B race in 22:52. Powhatan freshmen Rylan Powers (19:43) and Olivia
MICKELSON continued from >7 the final round, he enjoyed the battle with Mickelson. “Phil and I, we’re the same age and we’ve been competing against one another since college golf,” Weir said. “We’ve had lots of, you know, battles over the years. So there’s been plenty of tournaments that we’ve both been in the mix and trying to battle out for a win.” Mickelson and Weir are both left-handed. There have been just three instances on the PGA Tour where southpaws finished both first and second. Mickelson and Weir were first and second, respectively, in the 2005 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.

Goodrich (24:32) swept the boys and girls open B races, respectively, and Hanover Elite’s Nicholas Ligday won the boys open A race in 17:42. The winners of the morning championship races were Swamp XC’s Lindsey Hester (girls, 19:11) and XC-Elite’s Brogan Giffin (boys, 15:48). Juran and Dameron have been among the Goochland cross country runners who have trained twice a week Mickelson finished second to Bubba Watson in the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open, and he was second to Ted Potter Jr. in the 2018 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Paul Goydos came in third with a 13-under 203. Brandt Jobe and Bernhard Langer tied for fourth with a 12-under 204. Kenny Perry, K.J. Choi and Retief Goosen finished in a tie for sixth with a 11-under 205, and Robert Karlsson – who doubleeagled the 18th hole – and Ernie Else finished in a tie for ninth with a 10-under 206. with their teammates and Goochland girls cross country coach Andrew Meiller at the high school. In the following weekend’s VA Elite XC middle school 4k championships on Pole Green Park’s fast upper course, sixth grader Andrea Rogerson placed 17th out of 55 runners in 16:22.2. Her older sister, eighth grader Annika Rogerson, ran the race in 20:18.

Thursday
Scary continued from >6 who acted familiar, but seemed unknown under a poorly constructed mask. Of course, there was always a danger of that broken bag that deposited the fruits of a night’s labor along the sidewalk, or the more unlikely occurrence of having your candy taken by an older trick or treater. But, more often than not, it was a night that went off without a hitch. The holiday didn’t have the economic impact it has today. Candy sales for this year’s effort are counted in the billions and it is estimated that more than half of TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30
Americans will take part in some sort of All Hallow’s Eve celebration. Yes, Halloween has come a long way since those simpler days when candy bars were only handed out by the richest of neighbors. It’s assumed a role as America’s second most celebrated holiday. That position is bolstered with indisputable evidence like almost $6 million in anticipated pumpkin sales. Families travel to cities that decorate the town for the holiday while others flock to too many to count haunted houses or farms … or even amusement parks. My kids began celebrating weeks ago; the decorations have been up even
longer. Few things remain from my memories of Halloween, and the holiday has, I suppose, outgrown me. I’ve become sort of a bystander to the energy of the season, and there’s no doubt watching my kids enjoy Halloween has replaced most of my childhood memories when the fuller the bag the happier I was. And the only thing that remains from those wonderful days of the 1950s is the smallest of reminders, a tiny tidbit of days gone by and a different kind of scary — a piece of candy corn. Some things don’t get better with time.
