Roundabout project gets last needed piece of land By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Those traveling through the intersection of Fairground and Sandy Hook Roads may have noticed work underway on the county’s first roundabout, a project local officials hope will help smooth out the traffic snarls that have long plagued the spot. Last month the project hit a key milestone, with supervisors voting to donate 1.03 acres of land to the Virginia Department of Transportation for use as a right of way. The move provided the last portion of land needed to begin construction, though not all board members were eager to lend their support. District 5 supervisor Ken Peterson asked a number of questions concerning whether or not project planners had considered the economic value of the land that could potentially be lost once the roundabout is in place. “It would be easier for me to get behind the donation if I knew it wasn’t going to handicap our ability to develop those corners…at this see Roundabout > 2

Holiday Celebration and Christmas Tree Lighting

In this file photo from before COVID-19 social distancing protocols were put in place, eager visitors flock to Courthouse Creek’s Goochland tasting room to sample the company’s cider.
Trail continued from >1 ies and cideries, and introducing local craft beverage enthusiasts to a bevy of family-owned businesses where owners pour their hearts — pun intended — into every glass. To Cioffi, who founded Courthouse Creek with his wife Liza, the focus has always been on showcasing everything the area has to offer both locals and visitors alike. “Our goal is to not only promote all that is going on with craft beverage producers, but to highlight the beauty, activities, and other businesses along the Trail,” said Cioffi. “We firmly believe that invigorating local culture and business is the best way to sustain ourselves. The current pandemic has really spotlighted this fact, and also, we believe, opened people up to reconnecting to things ‘in their own backyard.’” The first meeting took place in the Cioffi’s original home, which they lost to a fire in March 2017. Since that early time, the area continues to grow, with 11 producers now in Goochland and Powhatan counties. Among the local businesses currently listed on the Richmond West Craft Beverage Trail are Courthouse Creek Cider (Goochland), Crazy Rooster Brewing
Company (Powhatan), Elk Island Winery (Goochland), Fine Creek Brewing Co. (Powhatan), Grayhaven Winery (Goochland), Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, West Creek (Goochland), Hill Top Distillery (Goochland), Kindred Spirit Brewing (Goochland), Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery (Goochland), Midnight Brewery (Goochland), and Three Crosses Distilling Co (Powhatan). The impact of the Trail has been overwhelmingly positive from a business standpoint, said Jason Trottier, General Manager of Kindred Spirit Brewing, owing in part to the fact that it offers area beverage enthusiasts a nudge to perhaps sip outside of their comfort zones. “With all of us working together for a common purpose, and all of us working with slightly different customer bases, it has been beneficial for all involved.” Cioffi said his current goal is
to refine and reprint the Trail’s map, which will feature the location and address of all of the producers participating in the Trail. There has been plenty of legwork needed to get the Trail project off the ground, he said, but it’s been made easier by the support of so many other local producers. “I think all the producers on the Trail understand that a rising tide raises all ships,” said Cioffi. “Indeed, we all want to work together to ensure that Goochland and Powhatan thrive — not only because it helps us, but because it helps the counties in general. When people work, live, and play in their communities it builds stronger bonds, brings people together, and improves the local economy.” For more on the Richmond West Craft Beverage Trail, including a map and links to all participating businesses, visit www.richmondwesttrail.com.

Students, community leaders mark Red Ribbon Week Contributed report
Red Ribbon Week was Oct. 23 through the 31st this year. This week is celebrated each year and is the largest and oldest prevention/awareness program for alcohol and drugs in our country. The first Red Ribbon campaign was in 1988, and President Ronald Reagan and Mrs. Nancy Reagan were the honorary Chairpersons. Initially this was to honor Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985. This year’s theme is “Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free.” Locally the Goochland and Powhatan Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) teamed up with Goochland County Public Schools Youth, Staff, and Community Leaders to host a virtual teen-led event about what it means to Be Brave
and Drug Free for Red Ribbon Week. “We hope to help and lead our communities by sharing information, thoughts and examining the issues concerning drug and alcohol misuse and abuse” said Brad Luxford, RSAAC Committee Member. Youth who spoke during the event addressed the unique pressures they face during 2020, what it feels like to attend school virtually, and the reminder to adults and each other about the importance of taking breaks. One student created a powerful film, “What I Stand to Lose,” in which she described her personal reasons for avoiding drugs. A student from Goochland Middle School discussed her thoughts on protests and racial tension while addressing the need for resources to be distributed with intention “in the right way.” Another student, speaking about students with men-
tal health needs, reported that “it hurts when people think they are trying to get attention.” “This virtual event was significant for RSAAC and all partnering organizations because community leaders were able to hear the wisdom and insights of our youth” says Robin Pentecost, RSAAC member and Behavioral Health and Wellness Supervisor at Goochland Powhatan Community Services. During the week, students learned about substance abuse and misuse in their health classes. This information centered on the trickiness and unique qualities of the teenage brain. These qualities are important to human development, but also make the adolescent brain more susceptible to becoming addicted to substances. Also, the risk taking part of the brain devel-

The event took place virtually Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Goochland High School (GHS) and included a forum that united GHS students and faculty, community leaders and other professionals. All of these people are committed to
helping keep our community drug free. The following speakers gave brief talks: Goochland County Fire-Rescue Chief Ferguson; Sergeant Lancaster, Goochland County Sheriff’s Office (GSO); Sergeant Ryan Leabough, GSO; Deputy Scott Leabough, GSO; Coach Justin Fitzgerald; Virginia Poison Center Education Specialist, Fiorella Carhuaz; GHS Nurse,
Kent Duffey; and RSAAC Chairman and Goochland’s Commonwealth Attorney, Michael Caudill. For more information about RSAAC and upcoming events, visit www.rsaac.org and follow the Coalition on Facebook. —Contributed by RSAAC Committee member Brad Luxford

Let’s not make this weird … on second thought, why not?

By Roslyn Ryan Editor
No matter who we are or where we’re from, most of us have at least a few cherished holiday traditions that we come back to year after year. Maybe it’s loading the family in the car to hunt down the perfect tree, or reading the same book right before bed on Christmas Eve. Maybe it’s hiding a potato wedge in the Christmas tree and seeing how long it takes the other family members to find it. Wait — you don’t hide a potato wedge in the tree? To be fair, my family never did that one either. It was actually featured on a list I recently came across on the internet entitled “Weirdest
my sister and I took great delight every year in coming up with background stories centered on why the wise man was angry at the cows and sheep, and what he was yelling at them. I suppose some people might consider that strange, but it’s not like we were running around decking the halls with potato wedges for goodness sakes. This year, of course, the holidays are going to be looking a little bit different for most. Almost all of us are going to be missing someone or something, whether it’s a family member or friend who can’t be with us or a tradition that just isn’t the same over Zoom. We’re going to make do, like we all have been for so many months now, and we’re going to remain thankful for what we still have. And maybe this year’s sacrifices will serve to remind us all just how special all of those traditions are, from the solemn to the silly. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to see if I can find that old Willie album. In these weirdest of times, I think I could use a little Blue Christmas after all.
Joy of legendary rivalry has faded but still remains By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’m not sure if the rivalry is getting old; or if it’s me that showing the sure signs of aging, but this year’s Alabama-Auburn game didn’t
produce the usual intensity in this Crimson Tide household. Make no mistake, no one here is complaining about the results as top -ranked Alabama sent War Eagle fans home with a more than noticeable frown on their faces in a contest that

Letters to the Editor State needs to rethink its current approach in fight against COVID Dear Editor, The coronavirus is a way overblown scare by politicians trying to be politically correct to stay in office and who should all be voted out of office ASAP. Virginia has 8,650,000 citizens and there are 224,000 reported cases of coronavirus or 3 percent of our total population. Do the math. So what’s the big problem? I suggest that 3% of our population catching what amounts to the flu or a bad cold for the vast majority people is not a big problem. In Virginia, there have been about 4,000 deaths related to coronavirus mostly of old people like me who are about to die anyway, or .04% of our population. So again, what’s the big problem? So for these low statistics our crazy Governor Northam continues to scare Virginians with his news conferences and efforts to shut down the Commonwealth. Northam’s unscientific actions are causing great harm to Virginia and it is time Virginians to revolt. The low number of minor Coronavirus infections and deaths in Virginia do not constitute a major crisis. Our civil liberties should not be infringed due to the current Coronavirus outbreak. Our Virginia democrat government is over reaching with the coronavirus scare and this should be remembered at the next election. Coronavirus statistics clearly do not support shutting down businesses and ruining the Virginia economy as our dumb looking Governor wants. Numerous studies do not see Letters > page 13

Goochland’s winter schedules are coming together Bulldogs looking for more girls basketball games, swimming meets By Tim Pearrell and Nick Vandeloecht
Goochland High School activities director Joe Fowler says the Bulldogs are “all in” for playing winter sports. One catch: They’ve needed to find some other schools to play. The good news is that Goochland’s boys basketball program has assembled a full 26-game regular season slate — 14 games for varsity, 12 for JV — and the wrestling program is all set to compete in eight meets prior to regional competition. Goochland girls basketball has secured 11 of 14 varsity slots as well as nine JV games. Both the boys and girls basketball teams will open their seasons versus Charlottesville on Monday, Dec. 21, with the boys at home and the girls on the road. For both programs, JV begins play at 5:30 p.m. and varsity plays at 7 p.m. Goochland wrestling is currently slated to begin its season on Monday, Jan. 4, at Western Albemarle. All of Goochland’s meets will be on the road. “In terms of wrestling, we do not have multiple competition mats that are necessary to host a match in the age of COVID,” Fowler said. “Currently you need two mats to host one match. One mat is being disinfected while the other is used and then you switch mats.” Goochland was able to secure the full schedule for its wrestlers when Fluvanna dropped wrestling for this season, allowing Goochland to fill
the Flying Flucos’ spot on the Jefferson District schedule. It also gives the Bulldogs a jump start as far as competing in the Jefferson District, as they will be joining the district full-time next fall, Fowler pointed out. In addition to needing to add a couple more games on the girls basketball side, GHS is still looking for swim meets. Fowler noted that scheduling for the swim season has been challenging because the pools Goochland and other schools typically utilize (the YMCAs, Randolph-Macon, HampdenSydney and St. Catherine’s) are not available to them this season. Goochland was able to get two meets at Fork Union Military Academy prior to the latter school’s students returning from winter break. Six of the nine schools in the James River District, of which Goochland is still a member, have decided not to play in the winter, Fowler said. That’s part of a no-play list that is building around the state as COVID-19 cases tick up and about 30% of the 132 school divisions are in fully remote learning. “When our district folded winter sports, we had to get creative and search for opponents wherever we could find them,” Fowler said. Schools in the Capital, Colonial and Dominion districts — comprised of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan and Richmond schools — also had to rework schedules following the announcement from Richmond Public Schools that it wouldn’t allow its five high schools to play in the winter. The Henrico County Public Schools system on Monday announced that its schools won’t be playing winter sports this season because of the pandemic. Chesterfield and

Hanover haven’t announced decisions as of press time. Activities directors throughout the area are making plans knowing the stop sign can be thrown up at any time. With Henrico schools sitting out, the Capital District has been whittled down to just the four Hanover schools — Atlee, Hanover, Mechanicsville and Patrick Henry — while the Colonial District has dropped all the way down to just one cur-
rent participant, Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond. Dominion district schools will get their 14 games indistrict by playing each other twice, Cosby activities director Mickey Swartz said. All of that has limited area options for Goochland, a school with a smaller enrollment that doesn’t normally play its neighbors in the Capital, Colonial and Dominion districts. While Goochland’s bas-

The boys will also match up twice with West Point — including once on the road — and once with Staunton River in Goochland.
Goochland was originally supposed to wrestle Mills Godwin, but the team picked up a Jan. 13 meet at Hanover following Henrico’s decision to not play winter sports. The Virginia High School League left the decision to play sports to school divisions after the league got the green light from Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to begin participation in December in basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, sideline cheering, swimming/ diving and wrestling. VHSL spokesman Mike McCall said the league expected some schools would opt not to play. Northam in November issued new restrictions that limits gatherings for indoor and outdoor recreational sports to 25 spectators, and while uneasiness grows over whether the winter season will start, the league said the restrictions do not prevent VHSL schools from playing sports. College basketball programs have been constantly redrawing schedules as they get ready to start their seasons. Given how quickly things can change, Fowler thinks a lot of high schools may be penciling in and erasing opponents until just before the season starts, assuming they play. Even then, he said, “You’re going to lose some games as people have positive tests and contact tracing.” “It all depends which way the numbers go,” said Fowler, who plans to hold senior night at Goochland’s first home basketball game. “The well-being of the students’ health is obviously more important than anything else. Who knows how much things can change in the next month and a half? “If the SEC can’t pull it off in football every single week,” he added, “it’s certainly going to be a challenge for public high schools.”

And, on the rare occasions that Auburn

Now, I’m not naive enough to Perhaps it was the pandemic or the believe that COVID-19 has stilled the turbulent waters between Plains and Tuscaloosa, and there’s no guarantee the two loyal groups will ever enjoy best friends status, but troubled times sometimes produce the most unusual or unexpected relationships. As COVID-19 cases increase across the country, Goochland County and the Chickahominy Health District (CHD) want to take a moment to share some tips for safely celebrating this holiday season. Unfortunately, household gatherings could potentially contribute to the rise in COVID-19 cases, if not held with safety measures in place. Consider how your holiday plans could be modified to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep your friends, families, and communities healthy.
If you gather, do so wisely and take precautions to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Keep your gathering small, short and local. If possible, stay outside and ensure proper ventilation if indoors. Wear masks and social distance; in addition, wash your hands regularly, especially before and after eating. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages folks to avoid unsafe activities and events that may pose a higher risk for spreading COVID-19, which include large gatherings, especially indoors and in poorly ventilated
spaces. COVID-19 spreads primarily through respiratory droplets. To lower the risk of spreading respiratory infections, including COVID19, VDH encourages the following effective behaviors: Stay home when you are sick. Avoid contact with sick people. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not
available. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Get your seasonal flu shot. If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop symptoms, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your healthcare provider for medical advice. If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have it, follow the steps from the CDC website to help protect other people in your home and community.
The Chickahominy Health District is working to provide upto-date guidance. The following resources have been established to answer COVID-19 questions: for the district’s COVID-19 hotline, please call 804-365-3340 Monday-Friday (voice message are checked and calls are returned between 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), email questions to chickahominycovid19@vdh.virginia.gov or call VDH’s hotline at 877-ASKVDH3 (877-275-8343). For the latest on COVID-19, visit: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus or www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/.
