Benedictine’s state championship performance encompassed their 2021 season. After early struggles, the Cadets (19-6) caught fire at the right time and won their final 11 games, including a dramatic, come-from-behind VISAA baseball title game on Saturday night. Benedictine in that game fell behind 5-1 but rallied and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning to overtake St. Christopher’s 8-7. Benedictine, coached by Sean Ryan, has won three state championships in the last four years. See more on page 9.

Goochland Pet Lovers’ (GPL) Good Neighbor Fund has been renamed in Memory of William E. Quarles, Jr. who served as a board member for Goochland Pet Lovers. The new name and logo were unveiled on May 20 during a celebration event attended by family, friends, and colleagues of the Quarles family. Quarles served Goochland County in many ways, including as a Supervisor, Commissioner, School Board Member, and community volunteer. In everything he did, advocating for those of the Goochland community was his top priority. During his time on the board Quarles of Goochland Pet Lovers, he pushed for outreach by the organization into all areas of the county. “Many times after a board meeting, William would come up to me. He would always ask how my family was as he had worked with my father. Then we would proceed to discuss ideas how GPL could provide a helping hand to Goochland citizens. The Good Neighbor Fund does just that- provides a helping hand- and there is no better person for the fund to be named for,” states see Quarles > 2

The family of the late county supervisor and school board member William Quarles gathered at the Goochland Animal Shelter on May 20 to celebrate the renaming of the Goochland Pet Lovers’ Good Neighbor Fund in his honor.

Quarles continued from >1 Sarah Marshall, GPL Board Member. “When the board was thinking of how we could possibly honor William, we immediately thought of the school system. The CTE students created the most beautiful plaque for us to present

the new logo to the Quarles family.” The Good Neighbor Fund was established by Goochland Pet Lovers in September 2020 and launched in February 2021. The program strengthens families and individuals by offering assistance and coordinating low/no-cost vet care to allow Goochland fami-

Local students earn Memory Master Award Contributed report

Classical Conversations of Goochland is celebrating four students achieving a nation-wide testing of over four hundred facts from eight subjects as part of the Classical Conversations Memory Master American History cycle 3 program. Classical Conversations is a homeschool community that follows the Classical Education model and is available to support homeschooling families with a Christ-centered curriculum. The test lasts approximately two hours and has eight subjects where the students recite memorized facts. For the 2020-2021 academic year, they were tested four times over two-three weeks, and includes a chronological timeline of 160 events and people, this year was a concentration on American historic events including

Declaration of Independence, Monroe Doctrine, Missouri Compromise, Civil War, Fourteenth and Nineteenth Amendments, WW1 and WW2, NATO, Preamble and Bill of Rights plus more; 120 geographical locations in North American; science including facts from the periodic table and parts from eight body systems; recitation and translation of John 1:1-8 in Latin and English; English grammar facts and irregular verb conjugations; math multiplication tables to the 15s, common squares, cubes, basic geometry formulas, unit conversions and reciting all 46 U.S. Presidents. Each Memory Master successfully recalls with 100% accuracy the information spent learning over 24 weeks. This method of learning promotes long-term memory and creates pegs of learned materials that will grow as they continue to gath-

er more information regarding the events and details. The four Memory Master students were Sevy Scarola, Colin Getter, Dominic Scarola and Sam Penfield were between 8-12 years old at the time of testing. “This is a very difficult task the students have accomplished. They spend months preparing for this test and few students accomplish this mastery. They have worked very hard and should be proud of this honor,” says Terri Scarola, Director of Classical Conversations of Goochland. “This is our third year as a campus in Goochland and the second year in a row where four students have accomplished this incredible task. As an adult, I don’t think I could do it.” Scarola said. Classical Conversations is a nationwide program for home educators that help train and equip parents and

students in a Christian, classical education. Locally, they met at Salem Baptist Church in Manakin. Elementary students — four years old through 6th grade — meets once a week, alongside a parent, during the Foundations and Essentials programs. Classical Conversations hosts a free one-day homeschool conference for parents each summer called a Parent Practicum. In the Garden

Watering wisely offers benefits beyond the garden bed By Cathy McCarthy Contributing Writer

As the relative cool of spring time transitions to the summer heat of Central Virginia, some plants in your garden may need supplemental watering to be at their best. However, whether you are paying a water bill or just trying to be gentle on your well, most homeowners would prefer to minimize how much extra water they use. Water conservation is also good for the planet as more fresh water is currently being used than rainfall can replenish. Fortunately, there are several opportunities to make your plants, the planet, and your well pump happy at the same time.

thirsty. The Massachusetts Extension Service recommends providing new plantings with the equivalent of 1” of rainfall per week. Therefore, during a dry week, a woody plant requires 10 gallons of water applied twice a week to maintain a 20” – 24” root ball. Planting in early fall means that temperatures will be lower and less water will be lost through transpiration while rainfall amounts will be higher. Plump up your soil. For new plantings like a vegetable garden where a fall planting isn’t possible, add organic matter to your soil. Incorporating organic material such as compost and aged manures helps water penetrate through Central Virginia’s clay soils and increases the soil’s water absorption and holding capacity. Ideally, soil used for growing vegetables should contain approximately 5% organic matter. To understand your starting point, get a soil test (learn more at soiltest. vt.edu).

Choose a better planting time. In Central Virginia, early fall typically offers lower temperatures and more ideal conditions for planting than early summer. New plantings typically require supplemental water as they settle into their new surroundings. Disturbed roots are unable to support top growth efficiently and Measure twice, water once. new trees and shrubs are especially Once the soil is prepared, purchase

and install an inexpensive rain gauge. Similar to other new plantings, vegetable gardens typically need water if there has been less than an inch of rain in the last 5-7 days. Sometimes an overnight shower goes unobserved, but the rain gauge will help watering decisions be data driven. Use soaker hoses. If water is needed, use the right equipment. Up to half of the water put out by sprinklers is lost to evaporation. That’s a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on a well pump. Water landing on leaves can also contribute to foliar diseases like powdery mildew. Using a soaker hose means water is efficiently delivered to the root zone where it’s needed. The Massachusetts Extension Service recommends measuring water output by placing empty tuna or cat food cans under part of the hose and running the hose until an inch of water is collected. By slowly providing an inch of water, the moisture should soak down into the soil to the ideal depth of 4” – 6” where mature roots can begin to

absorb it. Be careful and avoid Plant your plants closer togethshallow watering as this can lead to er. This may sound counter-intuitive, shallow roots. but interlocking leaves of neighborsee Water > 7

Don’t over do it. Soil should never be soggy and mulch shouldn’t be more than 3” deep. Soggy soil will drown plants and mulch mountains will cause death by dehydration. The roots of plants need oxygen and if the soil is consistently saturated the plant will drown. On the opposite end of the continuum,

if mulch is too deep it can create a barrier that repels water and doesn’t allow it to soak into the soil. The goal for vegetable plants is consistently moist, oxygen rich soil.

The Big Chill: Local gardener looks back on late spring frosts By Virginia McCown Contributing Writer

I’m having misty ice colored memories of last year’s Mother’s Day freeze. Weeks after the average last frost date for our area (Zone 7), Cumberland County experienced two nights well under freezing: May 8 and 9, respectively. No mistaking it, there was a skim of ice in the bird bath several days in a row. No peach, apple or paw paw ripened in my orchard. “But what about the pecan trees?” you might ask. “Nary a nut,” I reply. “With the early progression of spring blooms, comes early release of pollen,” said Kirsten Ann Conrad,

an agriculture natural resource agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension. “If flowers are open and mature, they are releasing pollen. A late winter freeze however, could kill flower buds and reduce the amount of pollen in the air. A very wet spring with frequent rains may also reduce aerial pollen count as well.” Conrad wrote this in Unpredictable Weather Patterns Require Special Care and Attention for Spring Plants and Trees, published March 6, 2020. “Cherry trees and most flowering ornamentals will avoid extensive damage as long as the temperature stays above 26-27 degrees. Less than that, the damage increases proportionately. Up to 90 percent of cherry

blossoms in late bud or flower stage will be damaged at temperatures that go down to 24 degrees Fahrenheit.” Conrad was unfortunately unavailable for comment as of this writing. Me? I have just begun to exhale after the freeze of April 21 and 22, 2021. I’m happy to report little apples are appearing on my trees. The paw paw flowers haven’t fallen. Miniscule cherries are forming. Even the peaches were spared! The jury for the pecan trees is still out ….at least for now. “This place……. is cursed” declares Jacques in the 2001 movie, The Mummy Returns. One field I own receives the first autumn frost a good week before any other area on my property. It

also gets trounced by a late spring frost. In The Garden Primer Barbara Damrosch wrote, ”Despite the fact that valleys are sheltered from cold winds and tend to be warmer than higher areas in daytime, cold air can flow down into them at night so that they become “frost pockets.”” “It’s a problem in spring when the trees are setting fruit, because buds or flowers can be nipped by frost before pollination can take place, “ Damrosch warned. Good news for my field: It isn’t cursed. It’s simply located within a frost pocket. After years of frustration, I’ve solved the problem. When it’s not a meadow for native wild flowers it’s a great stand-in for a ball field.

What’s next ? Spring webworms, tent worms, or Eastern tent caterpillars are the different names for Malacosoma americanum, one species of dark furry worms that weave silky webs around the branches of black cherry, apple, or crabapple trees. Tent caterpillars aren’t normally a threat to mature, healthy trees. They eat away some leaves, but that’s the extent of the damage. Young trees, however, remain vulnerable. There are several ways to remove these pests. The first way is to remove the webs by hand and kill the worms with a soapy solution. Or simply squash them all at once with your feet. see Garden > 8

When I graduated from high school decades ago, my head was filled with advice, most of it timely and pertinent, but, admittedly, long forgotten. As I walked through a room of family members and friends shortly after the ceremony, an old friend of the family tapped me on the shoulder and whispered his version of graduation words to live by. “Hey, kid, don’t take no wooden nickels,” he said with a gritty smile on his face. It’s odd that I remember those words of wisdom today, and most of the important life advice I received seems to elude me. Looking back, I’m sure the misplaced words of encouragement were well focused, and, if followed, would have made life easier at some points. But advice is a double-edged sword, and if you decide not to take it you usually find out the same lesson for yourself. Some of us take the advice and find a need to challenge its validity. That’s all part of the process. Even at this late stage in my life, now the father of four children, I am reluctant to offer any advice to this year’s Class of 2021, but I am resourceful enough to call on the wisdom of others to provide some sound, and sometimes humorous, graduation thoughts. Local region embraces ‘The Basics’ Contributed report Early childhood champions throughout the Richmond region are getting back to The Basics…literally! A wide variety of nonprofit organizations, social services and government agencies, school systems and healthcare entities are rallying around The Basics, which are five simple and powerful things that parents, caregivers and child care providers can do to help young children thrive. The Basics provide the framework and easy-to-use tools for interacting with little learners in fun and meaningful ways. These five evidence-based parenting and care-giving principles can benefit children from all backgrounds and across the spectrum of socio-economic factors:

Maximize Love, Manage Stress Talk, Sing, and Point Count, Group, and Compare Explore through Movement and Play Read and Discuss Stories Founded in Boston by Ron Ferguson, Ph.D., The Basics, Inc. grew out of the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University in partnership with the Black Philanthropy Fund. Amy Bartilotti, coordinator of the Office of Family & Community Engagement at Chesterfield County Public Schools, heard Dr. Ferguson speak at a conference in 2017 and immediately knew she wanted to bring The Basics to RVA. “The Basics give parents and caregivers the tools to encourage brain development long before a child starts formal schooling in kindergarten,” said Bartilotti. “The five principles are so simple and yet they’re a huge game-changer, leveraging everyday learning opportunities to nurture a child’s natural curiosity about their world and give them confidence to keep exploring.” “Science shows that 80 percent of brain

growth happens by the age of three,” said Meg Pienkowski, Ph.D., vice president of community partnerships and programs at Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, a regional school readiness initiative providing leadership for The Basics. “Young brains develop like little muscles, getting stronger the more that families and child care providers interact with and are responsive to babies and toddlers.” All of The Basics can be integrated seamlessly into a child’s day-to-day routine. Best of all, there’s no purchase required to implement any of the five principles. “Singing, dancing, talking, pointing, counting and reading are just a few examples of how a parent or caregiver can use The Basics to be a child’s first teacher in the all-important early years from birth to age five,” said Dr. Pienkowski. “We want to assure parents that they are doing a great job and to keep it up by trying an additional fun, brain-building activity from The Basics with their little one.” Many child care centers in RVA have enjoyed creating hands-on projects tied to The Basics. “We sent home a kit of pasta in different colors along with a list of things to do with the noodles such as sorting, counting, comparing and grouping them,” said Peggy Moore, director of Bon Air Baptist Preschool. “We aimed to demonstrate how parents can use items in their homes as teaching tools—it’s just that easy.” According to Marie Harper, director of Salisbury Presbyterian Preschool, some effortless opportunities to use The Basics occur when adults are driving in the car with their preschool passengers. “Point to a street sign and talk about its shape and color,” she said. “If there’s a picture on the sign, such as railroad tracks, talk about what that means. Take advantage of environmental print in everyday life such as store signs, candy wrappers and food labels, to help children make

important connections.” One of the most ardent advocates of The Basics is Virginia First Lady Pamela Northam, a former pediatric occupational therapist and science educator. “The Governor and I believe every child in Virginia is capable of success in school and beyond if given access to the resources they need,” she said. “The Basics are a simple, but vitally important, set of steps we can all follow to ensure we support our children’s healthy development. For example, every family walk is a great opportunity for a ‘Count, Group, and Compare’ activity. Growing up in Hampton Roads we loved collecting shells, flowers, and pinecones. These simple activities are the building blocks of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education and can lead to a deeper dive of learning through ‘Reading and Discussing Stories,’ another principle of The Basics.” The website, rvabasics.org, features free, downloadable Tip Sheets with a list of suggested activities for each of the five principles of The Basics along with other resources designed for specific audiences such as parents and caregivers, educators, faith-based organizations and the community. In addition to Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, collaborative partners for The Basics in the Richmond region include Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools, Children’s Museum of Richmond, ChildSavers, ExCELL, Family Lifeline, Hanover County, Henrico County Public Library, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Library of Virginia, Reach Out and Read, Richmond Public Library, Science Museum of Virginia, VCU Health, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and VPM Early Childhood Education. Honor continued from >6 also had served in the Gulf War, has been called a hero by those who served alongside him and has already been awarded a Silver Star, an award his commanding officers recommended several years ago be upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Sadly, however, after finally getting past a slew of bureaucratic hold-ups and miles of red tape, Cashe’s medal presentation ceremony was postponed due to the storming of the Capitol building on Jan. 6 of this year. President Biden is expected to present the award to Cashe’s family sometime in the near future, though no one is quite certain when (should it happen between the time this week’s edition is sent to press and the time it hits the newsstands, I will never have been so happy to issue a correction). To be certain, the delay in recognizing Cashe would not be the first time an undeniable sacrifice was not recognized as quickly as it might have been. Biden was expected this week to recognize the heroism of 94-year-old Korean War veteran Ralph Puckett by presenting him with the Medal of Honor, and it took over four decades for Vietnam veteran Melvin Morris to receive the same honor for his own acts of valor. As we gather to mark Memorial Day this weekend it is certainly worth remembering the sacrifices of those like Cashe and the 1.1 million other Americans who gave their lives for our country. Whether we honor them with medals, parades, or simply with a heartfelt “thank you,” we must never stop trying to make sure they know how deeply grateful we are for their service.

Cedar Apple Rust continued from >5

Yuck! Aim to work early in the morning when the caterpillars are still inside their webs. If you think there are only a few worms within one of these nests, you’re very wrong. I’ve made this mistake. I expected a few dozen worms but lo and behold there were hundreds. You might want to use gloves. For nests located high in trees, a broom stick helps bring the mass down. Could you use pesticide? If you chose to spray, focus on the foliage closest to the web mass. Spraying only the web will not kill all the caterpillars. The safest pesticide to use is Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) available at most garden centers. Sprays are best applied in the early morning or late afternoon. BT will not harm birds.

Those orange-colored gelatinous blobs are galls of the Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae commonly referred to as Cedar Apple Rust. It’s one of the most common of several fungal rust diseases that attack susceptible cultivars of apple and crabapple trees. It infects, disfigures and often destroys the leaves and fruit. First it needs an initial host plant, and that is the Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana). Any species of juniper can substitute for the Eastern Red Cedar. However, here in Virginia cedars are plentiful. On the Eastern Red Cedar host, the fungus produces reddish-brown galls. These galls are sometimes confused with cones. In April and May these structures elongate into orange gelatinous protrusions and swell during rainy periods. The wind carries the microscopic spores to infect apple leaves, fruit and young

branches. Individual spores can travel miles. These spores attach themselves to apple leaves about the time the buds are in the early blossom stage. Infection can take place in as little as four hours. Yellow lesions begin to develop in one to three weeks. In midsummer, spores from the apple leaves are produced, and in turn the wind carries the spores back to the cedars thus completing the cycle. The spores land on cedar needle bases or in the crevices of branches. The spores germinate and produce swellings resembling small green peas. What can I do if I’m trying to grow an apple tree? Remove all cedar trees located within a one mile radius of your apple tree….. of course! For most of us living in Central Virginia this is an impossible task. Young cedar trees live on neighboring property, in the woods and even pop up like

weeds in lawns. It’s more practical to select disease resistant apple trees right from the start. Contact your Cooperative Extension office for recommended apple varieties resistant to rust. Fungicides applied on a schedule are highly effective against the disease during the apple’s growing cycle. Most sprays are applied four times at seven to 10-day intervals, beginning in April and May. These applications protect the apples from spores being released from the cedar host. Available fungicidal products listed for use on apples can be used throughout the summer and can reduce infection, but the best time is during the infectious orange gelatinous state of Gymnosporangium juniperivirginianae. Benedictine: 2021 VISAA state champions! By Tim Pearrell Richmond Times-Dispatch

COLONIAL HEIGHTS -A little past the midpoint of the season, after getting beat 14-2 and 9-1 by St. Christopher’s and Miller in back-to-back games, Benedictine baseball coach Sean Ryan noticed a change in the demeanor of his team. “I think over the past few weeks we’ve gotten punched a few times, and … we absorbed the punches and we’d keep playing hard,” he said. The Cadets absorbed more on Saturday night. Falling behind unbeaten St. Christopher’s 5-1 after an inning, Benedictine rallied and claimed the VISAA Division I

state final with an 8-7 victory at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights. The Cadets pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch. Reliever Daniel Lingle made that stand up in the bottom of the inning, getting a lineout with a man aboard for the final out and giving Benedictine its second consecutive state title and third in four seasons (teams didn’t play last spring because of the pandemic). “I’m thrilled because we were not a very good hitting team for the first half of the year,” Ryan said. “We were hitting about .235 as a team around the midway point, and worse, we were just giving away at-bats.

“After being humbled by St. Christopher’s and Miller, I think the players realized we had to make some changes. And the at-bats got better and better, and we were just tougher outs.” These teams have combined to win the past four state titles — Benedictine in 2017, ’19 and this year, St. Christopher’s in 2018. The Saints were 22-0-1 going into the championship game. Ryan said the earlier drubbing “snowballed quickly on us in part because they’re the best team in the state. That’s a relentless team.” The Cadets (19-6), though, showed similar qualities by winning their final 11 games. “We came out here with

a different mindset,” said Benedictine’s Derrell Fletcher, whose pinch-hit, three-run double off the left field wall in the fourth inning helped the Cadets take a 6-5 lead. “We got behind, and we never let up.” The aces for both teams — St. Christopher’s Harrison Coble and Benedictine’s Jay Woolfolk — were pitching on three days rest and struggled throughout. Woolfolk went four innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks. He hit three batters and struck out six. Coble went 3 2/3 innings, yielding six runs on seven hits and two walks. He hit two batters.

Benedictine struck in the first inning on Woolfolk’s infield single and stolen base, and Henry Dolan’s RBI single. But Woolfolk hit the first two batters he faced, walked Carter Schmitt and gave up a two-run single to Coble. Bradley Garner made it 5-1 by slugging a three-run homer to left field. The Cadets got a run back in the third on Woolfolk’s double, stolen base and an RBI groundout by Corey Adams. A fourrun fourth, fueled by Fletcher’s pinch-hit double, gave them the lead. Fletcher is a spot starter at catcher, first and pitcher. “He does a little bit of everything,” Ryan said. “He’s an example of the guys who made

some changes. He worked on his swing a little bit. His batting practice has been much more productive, and he’s had better at-bats when he’s gotten his opportunities.” St. Christopher’s regained the lead in the fourth on Schmitt’s RBI double and an RBI single by Pete Bell. Woolfolk tied the game in the fifth with a two-out, infield RBI single. Singles in the seventh by Jackson Cray and Nick Neighbors — both off outfielders’ gloves after long runs — set up the winning run. Woolfolk had three hits, two stolen bases and an RBI, and Neighbors had three hits for Benedictine. Schmitt, Coble, Garner and Bell (RBI) each had two hits for St. Christopher’s.

Doczi, Stratton, key hits lift Bulldogs to 8-3 victory By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

GOOCHLAND – Behind a commanding performance from Ayden Doczi on the mound, a 4-for-4 day at the plate on lighting-paced reaches by Will Stratton and key hits throughout the lineup, Goochland baseball seized an early lead and pulled away for an 8-3 triumph over Central Lunenburg. The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 prior to their last four scheduled games in the regular season. “We finally are getting those key hits,” said Goochland head coach Wes Farkas, who added of Doczi: “Ayden pitched really well today, he had really good command…limited free passes today, which is key. He pitched really well for us.” Doczi, who will play football for VMI, earned the win in six innings on the mound. He scattered 3 hits, 2 earned runs and 1 walk across 81 pitches and struck out 11 batters. Of those 81 throws, 61 were for strikes. The senior zeroed in on his spots and racked up several called pitches with his picture-perfect locations. He excelled at getting ahead in the count, and he was locating really well with his slider. His ability to attack the zone and

All four of Stratton’s hits were infield singles.

catch batters looking early on also helped pave the way for him to get the opposing batters swinging at pitches that dipped below the bat and into catcher Travis Lestyk’s glove in the sixth inning. “I was really able to locate today, and I had great defense behind me,” Doczi said, while adding of his pitching: “It was definitely zeroed in today; I missed a few times and they capitalized on it. This is a good team. They’ve only lost two games (before us) this season: Buckingham, and Nottoway on Tuesday, but hopefully we can continue to play defense and continue to hit the ball and support our pitchers and

go out there and win the next couple of games.” Doczi also helped his case on the mound with his play at the plate, as he had the first RBI of the game and batted 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Stratton unleashed his speed to rack up four singles on four infield hits: three ground balls to the shortstop and a bunt to the pitcher. “We’re all about: ‘Hey, Will, if you can put the ball in play, you’re going to get on base,” Farkas said, “and that’s what he did tonight.” “They just keep telling me to make contact; I used to be a crazy person on the baseball field, so now that they’re get-

ting me to control it better, I feel like I can put more into my speed than trying to get power out of it,” Stratton said. “If I make contact, I can get down there, I know it. So contact: hits.” “Speed kills,” Farkas added. “We’ve got three guys right there in a row that can score, a lot of speed right there, so it’s really good for us if we get them on base.” Stratton beat the play to first base every time, and he helped teammates John Summitt and Mason Gregory score on one of those ground ball hits to stretch the Bulldogs’ lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning. “You could tell that he was

throwing them on the outside corner a lot, so if you really thought that you could get to it, just make contact and just get down the line,” Stratton said. Stratton also scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. After he reached base on his first infield single, he extended his trip from first to third base when a Central Lunenburg fielder bobbled the ball before retiring Stratton’s teammate Andrew Jones at first base. Stratton then came home off of a groundball single that Doczi hit hard into center field. In the second inning, John Summitt lasered a line drive

into left field to bring home Mason Nuckols for an insurance run. Summitt batted 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and added both a double and a run scored. Lestyk and Greyson Ragone laced back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth inning. Ragone batted 2 for 3 and also scored a run. Mason Gregory and Andrew Jones each added one base hit and one run scored. “We talked about it to the guys: just staying intense, keeping the intensity up every inning,” Farkas said, “and not letting up at all.” In the field, Ragone at second base, Riley Hite at shortstop and Nuckols at first base combined on a double play for the first two outs in the top of the seventh. “For the most part, defense is playing well,” Farkas said. “We’re kind of starting to fire a little better on all cylinders where we hadn’t really been doing that until the last two games. We’re heading in the right direction, guys are playing better, a lot more confidence, and we’re coming together more as a team, which…having a year off, it’s taken a while for us to get back on track, but we’re getting there.” Goochland will play at Buckingham today (Thursday, 5 p.m.) before hosting Cumberland on Tuesday, June 1 at 5:30 p.m.

Goochland girls soccer routs Hopewell for 3rd straight win By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

Goochland’s experienceheavy varsity girls soccer team continued to roll on Thursday as it notched its third straight win with an 8-0 rout of fellow Class 3 team Hopewell. “Watching this team from the last 3 years, it’s mostly been the same core people play-

ing from 9th grade up until now...it’s finally sort of coming together,” said Goochland assistant coach Andrew Hover. “We’ve got the team that I’ve been waiting for...we’ve sort of settled into the groove of connecting passes, taking shots, building confidence in pretty much every position that we’ve got. I think everybody’s really showing that they’re

here for it.” In Thursday’s win, Erla Thorkelsdottir earned the hat trick with a team-leading 3 goals, including 2 with which to end the first half. Both of Thorkelsdottir’s first-half goals, one of which was a header, came off of passes from senior Aubrie Hixon. Gabby Ragone netted the first goal of the game, Bridget

Dinora scored the second, Hixon added a goal in the second half and Allie Joyner scored two in the closing stages. Hover pointed to the recent work in practice that they’ve done with making through passes, keeping it going and making multiple passes in a single play. “Practicing the give-andgo stuff has been really good,”

Hover said. “We were doing it plenty during the first half... Nadia (Esposito) and Gabby were just working their way up the side pretty much the whole time.” Goochland will next play Prince Edward in consecutive games: on the road on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and at Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette home on Tuesday, June 1, at Erla Thorkelsdottir scores 5:30 p.m. one of her goals on a header.

American Legion Auxiliary collects ‘baby shower’ items to donate to military families The American Legion Auxiliary of Goochland has a mission statement that promotes service not self and has a goal to enhance the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. In support of this the Goochland Auxiliary collected donations for the USS Gerald R. Ford Family Readiness Group’s annual baby shower. The shower provided 20 families with a basket of items for the moms and babies. Auxiliary members made blankets, assembled gift baskets, bought diapers, wipes, baby clothes, toys and donated quilts for use as door prizes. Members gathered to assemble the gift items are L to R front row: Carolyn Seay, Jenna Nelson, Nancy Gregory. Back row: Amy Summers, Priscilla Taylor, Gladys Woodfin, Dale Mitchell, Debbie Summers, Janice Nelson. Contributed photo
