SURS Museum welcomes visiting journalists
G
oochland’s Second Union Rosenwald School Museum recently hosted two visiting journalists interested in learning more about the Second Union Rosenwald School’s (SURS) history and the role it played in educating Black children during the era of school segregation. During the visit, Jill Abramson — the former Executive Editor of The New York Times and now a senior lecturer at Harvard University — and former Associated Press journalist Diane Duston were treated to a tour and presentation organized by SURS President Calvin Hopkins, himself a former student at the school.
Abramson explained that she and Duston, longtime friends who share a passion for Civil Rights history, have taken in recent years to organizing what they call “History Driving Tours” through different parts of the country. Having heard about the SURS Museum, Abramson said she wanted to make sure it was included as a stop during the two women’s recent tour through Virginia, which also included visits to Charlottesville, Richmond and Farmville. To help round out their visit to the SURS Museum, which was created to preserve the history and cultural significance of the Second Union

Rosenwald School, Hopkins invited several former students to reflect on their experiences there. Among the attendees was also Ms. Ruth Cook Johnson, a former SURS teacher. “Listening to their stories, I could see why Mr. Hopkins and the other former students are so proud of the museum,” said Abramson, adding that she was also struck by the way the school had managed to provide a quality, comprehensive education for students despite limited space and resources. Said Abramson, “It just really made a big impression.” —Roslyn Ryan
