Those attending upcoming Goochland Board of Supervisors’ meetings will likely notice a familiar face on the dais. A native of Long Island, New York, Ackerman began his career in the commercial printing business, meaning he was often on call around the clock, reckoning with a never-ending barrage of problems under tight deadlines. The money was good but the stress could be punishing, Ackerman says, so to unwind after work he would often head to his backyard with a cocktail and watch the birds. It was a nice way to relax, he remembers, but he wouldn’t exactly have called him-
Already once before, Springfield Baptist Church has been rescued due to the heroic efforts of history lovers. Now, with Field Day of the Past’s recent move to Amelia, it is facing uncertainty once again. Back in 2007, the now nearly 140-year-old structure was slated for demolition until members of the Henrico County Historical Society made contact with the Field Day of the Past organization and arranged to have it moved to that group’s property in Rockville.

Chances are, if there is a traditional path to owning a bird-themed retail store, it doesn’t look quite like the one Manakin resident Mark Ackerman took.

County shares overview of bond referendum issues expected to be on ballot in November Contributed report
On Tuesday, August 5, 2021, Deputy County Administrator for Administrative Services Barbara Horlacher shared an overview of the 2021 Goochland Bond Referendum with the Board of Supervisors. Goochland County citizens will have the opportunity on the November 2, 2021 general election ballot, to cast their votes on two referendum questions that would allow the general obligation bond funding of county and school division projects that will have lasting, positive impacts on our community.
Specifically, voters will be asked to indicate “yes” or “no” on whether the county should issue general obligation debt in the amounts of: $60 million for public schools projects $36 million for courts, law enforcement and public safety projects Goochland is required by state law to get voter approval before issuing general obligation debt for capital projects. Officials have determined the county would be able to manage the new debt without any increase to the real estate tax
rate, which stands at 53 cents per $100 of assessed value. Between now and November Goochland County will be providing opportunities for the community to learn more about the 2021 Goochland Bond Referendum. Birds continued from >1 self an avian aficionado. It was wasn’t until many years later, when Ackerman and his wife Linda were living back in New York, that he started thinking that it might be time for a change of pace. He remembered the specialty store in the Gayton Crossing Shopping Center that he had often visited to buy bird seed when he lived and worked in Richmond, and called the owner. Would he by any chance, Ackerman asked, be interested in selling the store? The owner, as it turned out, was interested, and that is the
its audition process and to access audition preparation materials. If you are interested in auditioning, you will be asked to complete and submit a short audition form and schedule an appointment. The Chorus rehearses weekly on Tuesday evenings from late August through
May at the Dominion Energy Center or Epiphany Lutheran Church. Additional rehearsals take place just prior to performances. Recent Chorus performances with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra included Brahms’ Requiem and a concert version of Bizet’s “Carmen,” in
story of how Mark Ackerman, his wife, and his son Jay found themselves , quite suddenly, in the bird business. These days, over two decades after that initial phone call, customers at YardBirds will still often find Ackerman behind the counter or elsewhere in the shop, or perhaps see him and Jay toting the endless boxes of bird seed and other inventory staples in on delivery days. While many of their customers are local, they also welcome bird-lovers from more exotic locales (including as far away as South Africa). They come for the high-quality bird seed, Ackerman says, but also likely for the wealth of infor-
mation they are able to glean from the staff. Ackerman himself is tremendously knowledgeable about birds, though his advice tends to trend towards the pragmatic. Take, for instance, his thoughts on the idea that feeding wild birds will make them too dependent on humans: Not true, says Ackerman, noting wryly that “a few million years of evolution is probably not going to be undone by a handful of birdseed.” Though they move an awful lot of it, birdseed in not the only thing YardBirds sells. The store is beautifully and thoughtfully outfitted with an array of everything a bird-

This season, the Chorus will celebrate its 50th anniversary with April performances of Haydn’s Creation and close the season in May with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. lover could want (the business of inventory display is left to Linda, Mark insists), from bird houses to garden décor items to gifts. After so many years in business, Ackerman has forged countless friendships and gotten to see his youngest customers grow up and head out on their own. And while he’s weathered the same kinds of challenges all small business owners do, he insists his is a particularly charmed sector in which to work. Basically, “people want to retreat into their backyards and enjoy nature, and you’re helping them do that,” Ackerman says. “If had to do this all again, I’d do it all again.”

State Health Department reports uptick in COVID-19 outbreaks at childcare facilities and summer camps Area parents and guardians urged to take precautions to prevent further spread of virus Contributed report
The Virginia Department of Health’s (VDH) Central Region is reporting an increase in COVID-19 outbreaks in childcare facilities and summer camps as the Delta variant becomes more prevalent in the area. The agency is warning parents and guardians that they need to be vigilant in taking mitigation measures to protect their children from contracting and spreading COVID-19. The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry requires that staff in childcare settings wear masks,
Church continued from >1 And so it was that the church was loaded up by volunteers and taken by two flatbed trucks to its new home on Ashland Road in Goochland County. According to an edition of the HCHS’s newsletter printed that month, the project involved removing the roof, bell tower and steeple in addition to building a stabilizing wall. It was a labor of love, to be sure, and church members were reportedly deeply relieved that the historic building would be spared. It was also one of only a few predominantly AfricanAmerican churches from its era that remain locally, adding an increased urgency to pres-
regardless of vaccination status. The Central Region, which includes the Richmond, Henrico, Chickahominy, Chesterfield, Crater, Southside, and Piedmont health districts, has seen a dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases and an increase in the number of outbreaks at childcare facilities and summer camps. Since July 1, in the Central Region, ten COVID-19 outbreaks in summer camps and ten outbreaks in childcare/ preschool facilities have been reported to the VDH. Ninetyfive percent of those cases were unvaccinated. During the same period in 2020, one outbreak each in a summer camp and a childcare/preschool facility were reported. However, many of these outbreaks include cases in children and adults who are now vaccine eligible. In fact, since July 1, 40% of those unvacci-
nated cases in childcare facilities and summer camps were eligible to receive the COVID19 vaccine. “The Delta variant spreads more than twice as easily as previous variants,” said Dr. Caroline Holsinger, director of VDH’s Division of Surveillance and Investigation. “Vaccination is still the best way to protect against the Delta variant, but for children not yet eligible for the vaccine, it’s important to follow proper mitigation measures – wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing.” No matter the level of transmission in a community, every childcare program should have a plan in place to protect staff, children, and their families from the spread of COVID-19, to include encouraging staff and eligible children to be vaccinated. Childcare facilities and summer camps can help stop
the spread by remembering the following steps: Wear a mask correctly, especially indoors. Watch your distance. Wash your hands often. Parents can help by having open and honest conversations with children about the role they play in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Learn more about how to talk to children about COVID-19 here. Parents should check their child’s temperature every morning and check for any other signs of illness (more information on illness signs can be found here). To help prevent the spread of COVID19, it is important that children who have COVID-19 or might have it do not come to summer camp or childcare. Parents should consider having their child tested for COVID-19 before sending them to an overnight summer camp. Additionally, if they have
ervation efforts. Now, however, with the recent move of Field Day, the church is once again facing an uncertain future: according to a recent release, the building was not among those that made the trip to Amelia. According to RockvilleCenterville Steam & Gas Historical Association president Terry McNeely, the size of the church building, the distance it must be moved, and the cost of relocation are obstacles the association must consider in determining the historic buildings’ future. Field Day spokeswoman Melinda Gammon confirmed that no decision on the church’s future will be made until September. ***
Despite the loss of a number of other Field Day attractions, including the Short Pump Grocery and Garage, organizers say the event will still offer a truly memorable outing for visitors of all ages. “We are committed to putting on the best event possible in 2021,” McNeely said. “It will be on a smaller scale than the show we hosted in Goochland in the past decade, but our focus remains on agriculture and education.” Several historic presentations have also been scheduled. The pulls, favorites for many Field Day of the Past attendees will be operating on a yet-to-be constructed track. Lawn mower and tractors will pull during the day on Saturday and Sunday and trucks will be showing their
stuff on the track on Friday and Saturday nights. Show organizers are working on securing additional attractions and activities. “This is a major step for us,” McNeely said. “We are looking for volunteers to help us in the move and during the show. We are also seeking financial supporters to help offset some of the costs of moving this production.” For more information on Field Day of the Past, visit the website, which is being updated regularly, at www.fielddayofthepast.net, email fielddayofthepast@gmail.com or call the office at (804) 741-8468. been in contact with someone with COVID-19, they should quarantine. Guidance for childcare facilities, summer camps, and overnight camps is available on the VDH and Center for Disease Control and Prevention websites. Children 12 years and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, and availability will be expanded to younger children. You can protect your child from contracting COVID-19 and possible complications like MIS-C by getting them vaccinated.
Vaccination also protects others who might be more vulnerable to COVID-19, like grandparents, by reducing a child’s chances of transmitting the disease. For more information on how to get vaccinated, visit Vaccinate.Virginia.gov or call 1-877-VAX-IN-VA. If childcare facilities or summer camps have a case of COVID-19, they should contact their local health department immediately to conduct contact tracing and determine the best course of action to stop the spread.

Silver screen’s flicker still sparks joy By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Just a quick poll question here, when was the last time you went to the movies? As most of us continue to return to some version of our pre-COVID lives, the reopening of movie theaters is just one more sign that life as we knew it is slowly returning.
And since today just happens to be the birthday of the legendary movie director Cecil B. DeMille, I couldn’t help this morning but recall those days when a trip to the movies was not such a rare occurrence. “If I had to do it over again, I would have made twice as many movies,” said DeMille, but he might not have found nearly the appreciative audience he once enjoyed.

Like most Americans, I don’t go to the movies nearly as often as I once did. And like so many others, I’ve found it nearly impossible to turn down the lure of the many entertainment options that can be enjoyed right from home. But it isn’t hard to recall those days when the highlight of the week was sinking into a cushy theater seat with a bucket of popcorn and a giant

I’m beginning to think the best way to note birthdays after age 70 is with an appreciative and hearty sigh of relief. So, my 71st passed quietly last week without obsessive ceremony or celebration, just the way I like it. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate all the well wishes and greetings expressed by friends and family, and let’s face it, you are never too old to enjoy a nice birthday dinner with family. I was fortunate enough to experience all of those things. And the week was also marked with numerous phone calls from old and new friends, wishing me the best for the upcoming year. Most of those conversations started, as usual, with the familiar phrase, “How’s Jack?” They have followed my son’s journey since his diagnosis with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy more than a decade ago. Their emotional support has enabled us to weather some serious storms, and their love and support of Jack is something that is emotionally overwhelming to me. One of those conversations last week continued as an old friend with the best intentions began to tell me how sorry he was that my family has been forced to endure the hardships of raising a disabled child with a chronic illness. Not even close, I thought to myself while responding with a simple thank you. As I celebrate this birthday, my thoughts, as always, return to Jack and the blessing he represents to our family. The burdens of his illness have never outweighed the enormous joy he provides daily to all who see Jack > page 8

Some students need extra help to stay on task

ack-to-school shopping sales have long been indicators that the summer vacation season is coming to a close. Students and their parents may visit area stores or browse online looking for items to make the coming school year a success. Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience. Though hundreds of millions of adults and
adolescents have now been vaccinated against COVID-19, there figures to be some lingering effects of the pandemic during the upcoming school year. That could affect which school supplies families buy in the weeks to come. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends. A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five
years. It’s likely that school shoppers will turn to the internet for their supplies, which means local brick and mortar shops should increase their web presence and digital shopping capabilities to reach online shoppers. This includes omnichannel fulfillment, such as buy online and pickup in store (BOPIS) options. Reassessment of what’s essential: The

usy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two
or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior. But students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing. Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review
says 25 percent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed. Declining test scores: Some students are simply poor test takers, but a gradual or sudden

eachers strive to create supportive and challenging classroom environments for their students. Such settings can bring out the best in students and help them overcome obstacles, including an inability to focus. The struggles students can have with focusing on their studies was apparent during the pandemic. A 2020 survey of more than 400 college students found that 64 percent were concerned about their ability to maintain their focus and discipline in remote instructional environments. Though educators, students and parents are hopeful that remote learning will soon be a thing of the past, no one is certain about what lies ahead in regard to the 2021-22 school year. Ideally, students will be back in school time full-time five days per week by the start of the new academic year. However, there’s no guarantee that will be the case, and students may need help focusing on their studies. Emphasize one activity at a time. Various studies have shown that multitasking adversely affects performance and makes it hard to concentrate. A recent study from researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that performing two or three activities simultaneously puts significantly more demand on the brain than simply doing those tasks one after another. All students, and especially those who are struggling with focus, should be encouraged to take on one task at a time. Take breaks. The Cleveland Clinic notes that various studies have found that periodic breaks improve mood, boost performance and increase a person’s ability to concentrate and pay attention. Many students are well acquainted with lengthy cramming sessions on the eve of a big exam, which can feel like a rite of passage for high schoolers and college students. Parents and educators can emphasize the importance of taking breaks during such sessions and how periodic rest can help improve performance. Take a piecemeal approach to big tasks. The Child Mind Institute notes that breaking big tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces can help kids effectively tackle more challenging tasks. The piecemeal approach can make big tasks seem less daunting, and the success kids have at each smaller task can provide some needed momentum as they draw closer to solving the problem. —MetroCreative

trucks. As a result of their unique design, as well as their size and weight, school buses distribute crash forces differently from other vehicles, utilizing a different kind of safety restraint system that is effective at keeping passengers safe. This system is known as “compartmentalization.” The NHTSA says the interiors of large buses protect children without
seat belts because of closely spaced seats that have energy-absorbing seat backs. This compartmentalization will keep children from being forced out of their seats during an impact. However, in the United States, small school buses, or those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, must be equipped with lap or lap/shoulder belts in all seating positions.—MetroCreative
may purchase less clothing and focus more on tech items, among others. Traditional supplies become less necessary: In 2020, Deloitte forecasted that a shift in preferences and intentions would result in parents buying fewer traditional supplies, such as notebooks and office supplies, as they chose to invest in
digital resources to supplement children’s education. That shift likely will continue into this school year. Support for local retailers: Community spirit grew in the early days of the pandemic and continues now. Many people prefer to shop in locally owned stores. Eighty percent of customers surveyed feel more or as connected to their communities,
according to the business industry consultant company Accenture. Customers are trying new brands and products: Shoppers are trying new products out of curiosity as well as necessity. Back-to-school shopping may include novel brands and other items that may not have been readily purchased in years past.—MetroCreative
Lack of homework help at home: Parents may have prior commitments during the times of day when their children are doing homework. Even when parents are home, they may discover that the concepts covered in school are not being taught in the ways parents learned them and they may have difficulty assisting their children. Tutors can step in and help students when parents cannot. Learning disorder: Certain stu-
dents learn differently from others due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disorder. A child who is struggling with reading, phonics, spelling, and writing may have dyslexia, according to the tutoring experts at Dyslexia Practitioner NJ. Tutors who specialize in learning disorders can assess and address learning conflicts and tailor instructions in ways that can help students overcome those challenges. Students “shut down” or say they “hate” school: Disinterest in
school or expressions of hating going to school may be indicative of academic struggles in the classroom, says the Princeton Review. Some students get so frustrated they simply give up. Tutors can solve learning puzzles and help get students back on track and reignite their interest in school. Tutors can be valuable resources for students who need some one-onone attention to master general learning concepts or reinforce skills for key tests or projects.—MetroCreative
would never be able to watch my son play. In the ensuing months as I covered sports, I took particular notice of the expression on the faces of parents whose son or daughter enjoyed success on all sorts of fields. Little did I know that I would have that same feeling many times over as Jack grew older, confronting each evolving challenge in his life with determination. As he endured what seemed at times to be
unbearable pain and discomfort, my pride in our son only intensified. As he reached what once seemed like unobtainable goals, the expression on my face was identical to the ones I once admired on other parents’ faces. I recently sent my children to Florida to spend a week with my sister and their cousins. My nephew, who now has almost grown children of his own, took care of Jack for the entire week not missing a single
opportunity to let Jack enjoy the things that every kid thinks of when they are on vacation. When they returned, I sent him a thank you message to which he responded with very kind words regarding Jack and at the end, he wrote “Jack made it easy.” I suppose that sums up what I’m trying to convey in this message. In the most difficult circumstances and challenges he endures daily, Jack has always made it easy ... to
Movies continued from >6 we did for fun in the small town where I went to high school, whether it was making the trek to the mega mall for the latest blockbuster or gathering a group of friends for a trip to the dollar theater closer to home. Every once in a while a movie would come along that shifted the way you thought about the world or illuminated a point in history you hadn’t previously understood. If you stepped back out into the world after seeing films like “Schindler’s List” –to name just one example-- and you hadn’t been changed in some way, I’m not sure I can understand how. Around here there remain a number of unique options for taking in a great flick, from Richmond’s historic Byrd Theater to our very own Goochland Drive-In Theater, located in Hadensville. We live different lives now than we did so many years ago, and it does little good to pine for a return to those days when we counted down to a new release and waited on long lines to buy tickets for the latest blockbuster. But it’s tough to say that something won’t be lost if and when we finally stop enjoying films together in a theater. COVID may have taken away plenty of things we enjoy doing together, but here’s hoping that the pleasure of enjoying movies together isn’t something we’re willing to give up anytime soon. Are they all going to be Oscarworthy, life-changing work of art? No. But at least the experience — and the popcorn — will be worth it.
love, respect and adore him. So, how is Jack? He’s doing just fine, completing a summer internship and readying himself for a busy senior year. He’s prepping his new power soccer specialized wheelchair for the upcoming season when not busy fixing family computer problems. And, sure, Jack will never catch a winning touchdown pass or sink a last second jump shot, but having a Dad full or pride, love and appreciation for
a wonderful human being, who absolutely has to be the best son in the world, is something he will always have. So, I’ll celebrate this latest rite of passage with a heart full of gratitude for all of my children, and a special thank you to Jack for the infinite number of things he’s taught me in the last year. I’ll continue to cherish each moment, every hug and every tear with an unequalled sense of love and pride. He makes it easy.

Ryan Lachniet continuing to excel on the water By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Ever since Ryan Lachniet started fishing competitively, he couldn’t stop. “I’m just blessed to have the opportunity to do it…It’s become something I just had to do,” he said. “I just put it above every other activity out there and I said: ‘This is what I want to do.” And the successes have come. Ryan, a native of Gum Spring, has won eight fishing tournaments individually or with a partner over the past four years. He’s partaken in national championships. He’s also planning on going to Campbellsville University and competing on the university’s Bass Fishing team. “It’s been pretty awesome,” he said of the successes he’s achieved. “It’s been a lot of work…I couldn’t even count the amount of days I’ve spent out there on the water, just trying to learn things. But it’s been worth it, 100 percent.” Ryan has been fishing for as long as he can remember. He and his family live near a pond, and he remembers fishing off the dock when he was really little. He competed in his first fishing tournament when he was 12. That was a tough day every way looking at it; they barely even made it to the ramp, Ryan recalled; they had vehicle troubles on the way there, and he believes that he and his buddy and longtime fishing partner now, Marshall Johnson, might have only caught one fish that day on the boat. “But it was still one of the most fun days I’ve ever had in my life.” He loved “just taking what I love and putting it in a com-

petition.” “The experience was everything,” Ryan said, adding, that, even without doing well in that first tournament, “it was just so much fun.” Ryan won his first tournament when he was 13 in the Legacy Series. He remem-
bered catching a big fish early, and then securing the win with two keepers within the last five minutes. Another one of his wins saw him catch a total weight of 27.46 pounds in a Region 8 Open when he was 15. He placed first out of 93 boats.
This summer alone, Ryan and Johnson won in the CATT Tournament with Johnson, the Pamunkey Mini Series on the Chickahominy River with his dad Philip Lachniet, and the 2021 Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine on the James River.
He’s traveled as far as Idaho for the 2020 Big Bass Zone Junior Championship, where he competed against fishermen from all across the country. He’s competed locally on the Chickahominy and James Rivers and at Lake Chesdin, as well as at Kerr and Lake Anna.
Most recently, he and his fishing partner Carter Doren, representing the State of Nevada, took on the 2021 Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors on Chickamauga Lake in Tennessee. Once again, Ryan got to compete against other fishermen around his age from various parts of the nation. “Basically I just took my experience from lakes around here, and I put it to the test out there,” Ryan said. “It just started connecting for me.” Out of 306 boats, he and Doren finished fourth. They had a big first day when they reeled in 15 pounds and 1 ounce on the three-bass limit. Their first-day total also featured what Ryan said was their best catch of the week. He went to a row of docks, pointed the forward-facing sonar out in between two docks and found a brush pile. “I was like, ‘Hmm, there are some fish on that,’ and I cast right to it,” Ryan said. “Before it even hit the bottom, I hooked that 7-pounder.” With a second-day total of 11 pounds, 2 ounces, Ryan and Doren advanced to the final round on Saturday, which featured 12 boats. Their third-day three-bass weight of 8 pounds, 10 ounces ensured that they finished fourth with an overall weight of 34 pounds, 13 ounces. “It was pretty cool,” Ryan said of their placement. “I was hoping we could pull off that win after leading the second day, but fourth is still good. It was pretty awesome to finish that high.” Every day of the tournament, the temperature was

Rogerson sisters take on Youth & Junior Nationals Staff Reports

Lachniet continued from > 9 about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and there was “no wind and straight sun,” Ryan described – “it was really hot.” “And it got hot quick,” Ryan said. “By 10 o’ clock, it was already about 90.” He would get something to drink when they were moving spots, but otherwise, he described just being “so focused” when fishing. Ryan described the water of Lake Chickamauga as being way clearer than it is in a lot of other places he fished. But it also has a lot of hydrilla, and Ryan has fished a lot of hydrilla in Virginia. “I can take that experience,
and it really connected pretty well,” Ryan said. “It’s very similar.” For Ryan, getting the winning weights is a matter of “just putting your mind on something and working hard – just spending time out on the water; the more time you get out there, the better.” Through the time he’s put in, he’s found techniques that seem to work better depending on the time of year. For Chickamauga Lake during the national championship, Ryan knew that the bass bite shallow and bite deep, and that there were a lot more fish deep, but also that there was a lot more pressure deep, so he knew there’d be some big fish shallow. As a result, he went
shallow and fished using small jigs and worms that he knew would work shallow. Outside of tournaments, Ryan will fish at least two days a week, although he tries to go more. He’ll fish during the wintertime, and he and his friends have started running Lake Anna hot side tournaments in the winter. When he fishes, it’s almost always on the boat. The biggest bass and biggest fish he’s ever caught weighed 9.87 pounds. As his successes on the water have continued, Ryan is embracing the opportunity to attend and fish for Campbellsville University in Kentucky in 2022. “It’s pretty cool – I’m excit-
Sisters and Goochland County athletic standouts Anneliese Rogerson, Annika Rogerson and Andrea Rogerson participated in the 2021 USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Nationals this past weekend in West Chester, Ohio. Anneliese and Annika both won silver medals in the Age Group race, as Anneliese was the 17-year-old female second place national champion, and Annika was the 14year-old female second place national champion. The race in which they competed was a non-drafting race with a 300-meter lake swim, a 10-kilometer cycling section and 2.5-kilometer run. Anneliese ran the race in 37:31. Her swim pace was 1:31 minutes per 100 meters, her cycling pace was 19.86 miles per hour and her run pace was 7:46 minutes/mile. Annika’s race time was 37:23. Her swim pace was 1:34 minutes per 100 meters, her cycling pace was 19.89 miles per hour and her run pace was 7:39 minutes per mile. Andrea qualified and raced in the Youth Elite race, a draft-legal race for ages 13-15. Andrea, 12, raced as an age 13 competitor due to having a December birthday. The youth elite race featured a 375-meter swim, a 10-kilometer cycling section and a 2.5-kilometer run. Out of 67 Youth Elite Girls competitors credited with placements, Andrea finished the race in 17th place with an overall time of 35:24. She was the second age 13 girl to cross the finish line. Andrea’s swim pace was 1:30 minutes per 100 meters, her cycling pace was 22.97 miles per hour, and her run pace was 6:36 minutes per mile.

ed for it,” Ryan said of fishing collegiately. “It’ll definitely be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it.” Ryan said he had researched higher-level fishing teams, and he spoke to calling a lot
of them, but Campbellsville’s program and school stuck out to him. He called their coach Pete Hedgepath, talked to him a lot and visited the school. “It was just where I wanted to go,” he said. “Their program
is, in my opinion, the best in the country, and their coach is just an awesome dude… he’ll do anything for the kids on his team, and I just like the Christian environment that school has.”
