free outdoor festival will be bringing acres of food, music, games and vendors to the Goochland County Sports Complex this Saturday, but even that may not be able to rival what promises to be one of the day’s most memorable events: after a nearly two-decades absence, the Goochland Day Parade is coming back. “A lot of people have been asking for this for years,” said acting Goochland County Administrator Manuel Alvarez last week about the planned procession, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Goochland Holiness Church (3009 River Road West), and will end about a half mile later near Earls Rd.
Richmond Suburban News (RSN) is proud to announce the appointment of Powhatan Today editor Laura McFarland to Managing Editor of all of its publications including The Mechanicsville Local, the Ashland-Hanover Local, The Goochland Gazette and Powhatan Today. McFarland has served as editor of Powhatan Today for the past seven years and will continue in that role with additional managerial duties. McFarland said she is excited to assume her new role and looks forward to continuing her commitment to local journalism and RSN. “Getting the news that I had been named managing editor was both exciting and daunting,” she said. “Having worked for Richmond Suburban News for seven years, I feel like I have a good knowledge of MCFARLAND our news organization and am so proud of the products we produce in the counties we cover,” she added. During the past years, McFarland has formed working relationships and friendships with the RSN staff and has gained a healthy respect for the job they do. “Each member of our staff carries the workload of several people as they endeavor to produce quality newspapers in our communities every week,” she said. “I literally can’t say enough about how

County pledges funds for Firefly service expansion Project could soon bring high speed internet to almost every county home By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Two years after Goochland County officials kicked off the county’s 10 Steps to Broadband Internet Initiative, which included a commitment to provide all interested Goochland citizens with access to broadband internet service, those living in areas of the county without access to high speed internet may soon be able to get connected. During a board meeting on Sept. 7, county supervisors voted unanimously to participate in Firefly Fiber Broadband’s Regional Internet Service Expansion (RISE) project, which includes a 2022 Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI) broadband grant application and local matching funds of up to $3,637,500, money that will come from the county’s American Rescue Plan Act funds. The RISE project is comprised of Firefly Fiber Broadband, Dominion Energy Virginia, Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC), and the localities of Albemarle, Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, and Powhatan. The project, according to information presented by Firefly CEO Gary Wood, could
finally help those Goochland residents who have struggled for years to find affordable solutions to the lack of high speed internet in many areas of the county, particularly in the rural western end. The problem was exacerbated by the pandemic, as area schools went virtual and many businesses asked their employees to work from home. According to Wood, the project is expected to begin in the next few months and should take around three years to complete. Wood cautioned that residents will still need to be patient as work continues. Even when the company’s trucks begin to show up in a particular area, he explained, nearby residents are still likely six to eight months away from having service. Wood said the company would continue to provide frequent updates on where crews would be working and when customers could expect to have service. After years of pursuing options for connecting the county’s underserved areas, supervisors did little to hide their enthusiasm for the plan. As Wood wrapped up his presentation,
District 2 supervisors Neil Spoonhower sought to verify that the plan would finally put an end to the county’s internet woes once and for all. “Can we say that at the end of this project, with the exception of some long driveways, everyone who wants internet service will be able to have internet service?” Spoonhower asked. “Yes,” Wood replied, adding that the company was committed to making sure that even those residents whose homes have a driveway of longer than 2,500 feet could connect to the network. According to the resolution passed by the board, preliminary planning for the RISE project has identified 2,765 locations in the county as being unserved, meaning without access to speeds faster than 25 mbps download or 3 mbps upload. The preliminary design of the project includes 276 miles of fiber optic cable to be installed in the county to make service available to those locations, with a cost estimate of $25,220,000 for the construction.

Goochland native’s book offers wealth of advice for fundraisers By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Like so many successful salespeople, Goochland native Patrick Belcher got his start early on. And even as a young Boy Scout selling fertilizer doorto-door to raise money c a m p , Belcher knew he had a knack BELCHER for closing the deal. Now, after parlaying early lessons into a successful career, first in sales and then as a fundraiser for the American Red Cross, Belcher has released a new book aimed at helping others build their own fundraising skill sets. The book, “Fundraising Is: Everything Done Before
Goochland Day continued from >1 Alvarez said the parade was last held over 15 years ago. Following the parade, which will feature Goochland County Sheriff Steven Creasey as the Grand Marshall, the county’s annual Goochland Fall Festival is set to kick off at the Sports Complex, located at 1898 Sandy Hook Rd. That event will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature food trucks, pony rides, contests — including a bubblegum blowing challenge—scores of local vendors, and performances by the Richmond band Harley Boone, as well as solo artists Trace Nixon and Eric Tusing. According to Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda, the driving force behind bringing Goochland Day back to the county five years ago, the goal of the event
Asking for Money,” offers advice for both vocational and volunteer positions, helping fundraisers navigate the hurdles they will invariably face along the way. Drawing from his years of experience working with nonprofits, Belcher provides practical advice with a focus on team building, event management, and storytelling. Each chapter concludes with a “toolbox” that summarizes key takeaways, making it easy for readers to take what they’ve learned to their teams and implement it in their daily operations. Belcher, who now lives in Suffolk, Virginia, and heads up his own consulting firm, said that a key realization for him early in his career was how much crossover existed between sales and fundraising. “I realized how much my sales background could apply
to this kind of work, and that I could take those skills and apply them to something I really believed in,” Belcher said. He knows, of course, that most people think of fundraising as simply asking for money, a task many find unpalatable. But while Belcher admits the work can be challenging, he insists that it involves far more than simply calling someone and requesting a donation. Belcher likes to describe fundraising as an iceberg and asking for money as the part seen above the water. “If you do the fundraising right, asking for money is easy,” Belcher said. When it comes down to it, “It’s very much about relationships. How do you build confidence? How do you build trust?” Belcher said fundraising, at its core, is about communication. “You need to be able to tell that story.”
is to bring people together and remind them just how much Goochlanders have in common. “I like to do things that encourage people to come together as a community,” said Nelson-Lyda, who was joined in her efforts by fellow Goochland Day Foundation board members Carey Stagg – Goochland Day Foundation President– Annette Butler Jones, Christopher Subudhi, Ledra Allen, Thom Dykers, Terry Hazelton, Michael Haley, Troy May. Nelson-Lyda noted that organizers are expecting a large turnout, which has raised concerns about parking. In order to make attending the festival as convenient as possible, several shuttle buses will be running all day to ferry attendees from Goochland High School (located at 3250 River Road West) to the Sports Complex. Handicapped parking
will be available at the County Administration Building (1800 Sandy Hook Rd.) and at the skate park near the lower field. Masks will be required on the bus (and made available to riders who need them) but will not be mandated at the festival. To Stagg, the challenge of holding such a large-scale event has been made easier by the many volunteers who have pitched in since planning began. “I could not be more pleased with the level of heart, dedication, patience and skill, and cannot thank them enough for their mentorship, encouragement, love, guidance, and support to bring the parade to life after 20-plus years. We are excited to see if grow and flourish.” For more information on the Goochland Day Parade or the Goochland Fall Festival, visit www.goochlandday.com.

Since his party was reduced to the minority in 2019, Delegate Lee Ware has soldiered on precisely as we– his longtime supporters–expected him to do. He has stood firm for limited government, fiscal prudence, the protection of civil liberties, defense--not “defunding”–of our lawenforcement personnel, and academic excellence rather than ideological mischief in our public schools. And, as befits “the Gentleman from Powhatan,” as he is known in the legislature, he has cooperated readily when appropriate with “the other party” on behalf of policies good for all Virginians throughout the Commonwealth.
Just as important, Delegate Ware has been tireless in responding to our fellow citizens in distress during the many difficult months of economic lockdown and social restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. He has assisted hundreds of us with Unemployment claims, and he has enabled numerous others to gain needed help with the DMV. In sum, he has performed as always he has performed--with conviction and compassion and devotion to our communities in the 65th House District. Moreover, Delegate Lee Ware remains, in “Loyal Opposition,” a leader in our legislature. He exhibits what a senior member of “the other party” terms “a towering influence” in deliberations in the House. He remains a ranking member of the important House Finance Committee, and he is a ranking member, too, on the committees for Labor & Commerce, Agriculture, Chesapeake, & Natural Resources, and Transportation. Delegate Ware also serves on numerous commissions, including the Governor’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates, Unemployment, Health Insurance Reform, MEI Project Approval, Employment Retirement Security and Pension Reform, and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
Committed, courteous, cheerful, principled, and effective – these are some of the qualities that have earned Delegate Ware these commendations: *endorsed by the voice of small business—theNationalFederation of Independent Business *endorsed by Virginia Bureau’s AgPAC

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Battle to get county connected has been long indeed By Roslyn Ryan Editor
While most of us can’t remember back to 1937, a time when only around 10 percent of Goochland County had access to electricity, it isn’t hard to imagine how different our daily lives would be if nothing had changed. In fact, the vast majority of us probably take the electricity that powers our homes for granted, remembering it only on those rare occasions when we lose it due to storms or other disruptions. Much like most people in
Goochland simply cannot fathom living today without electricity, access to the Internet has become something of a necessity in our modern world. Yes, of course, you can live without it, but those who do are almost certainly at a disadvantage in a host of different areas. Without high speed internet, working from home is next to impossible. Virtual schooling in the midst of the pandemic was tremendously challenging for students without access to the internet at home, and even those less critical tasks — shopping, video chatting with family and enjoying movies —
are simply not an option for those who remain unconnected. Of course, much like electricity, high speed internet becomes more challenging to offer in areas that are less densely populated. It is a problem county leaders have been wrestling with for several years, but one for which they may finally have found a solution (see story, page 2). Last week’s vote to contribute over $3 million dollars of American Rescue Plan funds to a three-year project expected to help offer high speed internet to nearly all county residents will likely mean a world of difference to thousands
of Goochlanders. The vote meant that county leaders listened to their constituents, didn’t give up when the task seemed impossible, and continued pushing forward until a solution was in sight. “You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it,” said the late former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and the yearslong search for a solution to the internet issue has certainly proven that to be true. Hopefully, however, at long last, the county may just have won this particular battle.
Group’s focus remains on being good neighbor By Krista Rodgers GoochlandCares
GoochlandCares has been asking themselves very serious questions since the outbreak of the pandemic early last year. “How do we build better relationships? How do we better serve our community? How can we build a more equitable world that we envision, starting at home?” In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed national Good Neighbor Day. “As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities.” September 28 is Good Neighbor Day. On
this day, GoochlandCares affirms our commitment to being good neighbors and stewards and to strengthening and empowering the community we serve. Letters to the Editor Writer failed to distinguish between laws and mandates To the Editor, Robert W. Jaspen’s letter, “Mask argument does not stand up to close scrutiny” in the September 16th issue of the Gazette, draws a comparison between laws with mandates. A law is very different from a mandate. Laws begin with a bill that has to be drafted, debated, sometimes reworded, and then voted on by representatives of the people and must be passed with a majority vote. The difference requires the consensus of the people. Freedom and liberty is not just a “heritage’ or tradition passed down from generation to generation. It is the very foundation on which our government is founded upon. Mandates are made by an elected official and usually made during a state of emergency. This is why some Americans, like myself, believe the continued mandates being made even though Virginia’s Covid-19 state of emergency came to an end in July, are an attack on freedom and liberty. Mandates have limitations in America. They are limited by the US Constitution. Mandates can not override the US Constitution. Mandates can’t override existing laws, state or federal, which have to be changed by a legislature. Mandates can technically be enforced like laws, meaning they can remove you or arrest you but they cannot charge you. Mandates are to be limited to a specific time and must be removed after the emergency is over. The CDC and VDH are not governing bodies that have been elected. They give guidance to the population to make decisions for their own wellbeing. Mandates, unlike laws, can be quickly made and implemented by one individual. Mandates can be made within a few days or even as short as an hour time span. When mandates are rolling out and the people see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from >6 are seeing the uneven implementation of these mandates, they become an act of tyranny. Celebrities party with no mask, government officials not masking while in close contact and in large groups, sporting events or other large gatherings are all examples of the hypocrisy of these mandates. The most recent vaccine mandates requiring some businesses to enforce it while leaving others exempted. The CDC and VDH are ignoring those that have recovered and have antibodies. Why are they not providing guidance on natural immunity? Why not display numbers of the recovery rates. This hypocrisy shows that politics is using this virus as a means for political power. Fear is the useful tool implemented by many dictators throughout history. That should concern most Americans but unfortunately the fear of the virus, that these governing bodies have instilled in many, has caused some to trade liberty for security. Allen is the right choice for District 2 school board seat Dear Editor, Ten years ago, the “Goochland Revolution” included replacing all five
members of the Goochland County School Board with five conservative members. The results are remarkable and legendary. Today, our schools are the best in the region and in the top tier of school districts in the state. Goochland Schools have even received recognition at the national level. These outcomes are the result of sticking to core conservative principles, dedication, and hard work. Most of us can agree that the results have been spectacular. This letter is in support of candidate Angela Allen, whom I believe will carry on that tradition. So, how does this year’s special election in District 2 corollate to the 2011 election? In my view, there are many similarities. No, the schools are not dysfunctional and underperforming as they were in 2011. And no, there is not a complete rebuilding that needs to take place. And no, the entire system does not need an overhaul from top to bottom. What is the same is… our school community needs a school board member who has everyone’s best interests at heart – students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community at large. Angela Allen has the demonstrated ability to listen first and then navigate through what are often competing interests to devise and help implement solutions that provide equal opportunities for every student. What is the same is.…

our school division is facing unprecedented challenges – not from within as in 2011, but from the outside – from the state and federal governments. Angela Allen understands the roles of the levels of government and will help protect our school division from state and federal government overreach. What is the same is.… School Board members who have children in the school system make the best stewards of our schools. Angela Allen is the candidate who graduated from Goochland High School and has a child in the Goochland school system. She is committed to our school system as only a parent can be. What is the same is…. it takes a principled, common-sense approach to cut through the bureaucratic gobblygook that is coming from the Virginia Department of Education. Angela Allen has the demonstrated ability to understand complex issues and make decisions that are best for our school division based on her years in planning and organization at a Fortune 500 company. Her experience perfectly translates into qualifying her to handle complex, multi-million dollar decisions concerning the Goochland County Schools. The choice in this election is clear. Please vote for Angela Allen for District 2 School Board. Sincerely, Susan Lascolette Columbia

In The Garden
Persimmons offer delicious, easy-to-grow treat By Cathy McCarthy Goochland Powhatan Master Gardeners
H
ave you recently noticed s o m e local roadside trees with 2 inch orange fruit on their branches? They could be persimmon trees. Persimmons are native trees that produce and ripen their fruit from September to November here in Central Virginia. The persimmon tree can be found growing wild from Connecticut to Florida, but the tree’s botanical name, Diospyros virginiana, gives you an idea of how deeply rooted this plant is here in Virginia. In fact, according to Webster’s Ninth Collegiate Dictionary, the word “persimmon” itself is derived from putchamin, pasiminan, or pessamin, from Powhatan,
the Algonquian language of the native people of tidewater Virginia, and means “a dry fruit.” Many people do use persimmon fruits for drying or baking purposes as some varieties are astringent until after a frost. The definition of an astringent is a chemical that shrinks or constricts body tissue and tasting an unripe persimmon will definitely put a pucker on your face. However, while you rarely find persimmon fruit in your local grocery store because they don’t hold up to commercial shipping and storage requirements, that doesn’t make a ripe one any less delicious. If you don’t want to wait for frost to sample your harvest, there are several varieties, such as “NC21” that do not require bletting (frost softening) to become ripe. In addition, some landscape designers recommend persimmons as ornamental small trees due to their fall foliage colors and the aesthetic value of the orange fruits that remain on bare branches after the leaves fall. Growing persimmons in Goochland for either ornamental purposes or fruit production is typically fairly easy in comparison to some other, more fussy fruit trees. Persimmon basics include: No spraying required. Beyond
watering your trees for their first full year, there is little annual maintenance. Unlike apple or peach trees, persimmons do not require pesticides or fungal treatments as part of their annual care. Adapted for local conditions. Persimmons prefer slightly acidic soil (pH of about 6.5) which is typical of our local soil. They also tend to do fine with amended clay soils as long as they are located in a well drained location. Some varieties require a partner. Many persimmons are dioecious so you will need to plan for at least two trees, a male and a female, to produce fruit. If you only have room for one tree, seek out a variety that is self fertile - consider ‘Ruby’, ‘Yates’, or ‘Meander’. Give them some space. And speaking of room, some happy persimmon trees will mature to 40 feet in height and 25 to 30 feet in width so plan for the long term when choosing your planting location. If you would like something smaller, look for the slightly more dwarf varieties. When shopping for persimmon trees check the botanical name of the trees you are considering to ensure your purchase is the native species (Diospyros virginiana) and not the Asian persim-
mon (Diospyros kaki). For someone who would like to grow the straight species and is patient enough to plant a very young tree, inexpensive seedlings will be available for sale on the Department of Forestry website, www. buyvatrees.com , starting Oct. 1 for the 2021 – 2022 season. At a local fruit specialty nursery like Edible Landscaping in Afton, Virginia you should be able to find highly recommended D. virginiana persimmon varieties like ‘Ruby’, ‘Weber’, ‘Meader’, and ‘Yates’ (which only grows to 20 feet tall). If you are considering purchasing persimmon trees, late September and early October is a great time to shop for and plant this low maintenance native fruit tree. Once you have a persimmon tree you’ll have another reason to look forward to autumn as the chill of the first frost will bring you something sweet from your garden. Thinking of clearing land? Make sure to follow these safety tips Contributed report
New homeowners often see their homes as blank canvasses. Looking at a home as a blank canvas is typically associated with its interior, but it also can apply to landscaping. Homes are empty of furniture and decorative items like photos and art on the walls when new homeowners move in. That makes it easy to see the interior of a home as a blank canvas. But that’s not always so easy in the garden or the yard, where brush, overgrown plants or trees and other eyesores might have
been left behind by the previous owners. A landscape must be cleared out before it can be seen as a blank canvas. Though clearing land may seem like a straightforward process, no one knows what lies beneath overgrowth or neglected areas of a yard or garden. Do-ityourselfers can typically clear land on their own, but some safety strategies should be kept in mind to ensure the process goes smoothly. Wear appropriate PPE. Personal protective equipment should be worn when clearing land. The appropri-
ate PPE when clearing land includes attire and other gear that many homeowners likely already have on hand. A longsleeve shirt, puncture proof pants and gloves and slipresistant work boots should be worn when clearing land. Homeowners also may want to invest in a hard hat if they will be cutting branches off of trees or cutting trees down. A face shield also may be a good bet depending on the scale and potential dangers of the project. Contact your utility company. Overhead power
and telephone lines are visible to the naked eye, and homeowners should be conscious of those lines as they cut any high branches. But underground lines are not visible, and that can make clearing land dangerous. Homeowners are urged to contact their utility companies before they begin to clear any land so they can determine if any underground lines are beneath areas they intend to clear out. Get a lay of the land. Carefully inspect the area to be cleared prior to starting the project. Inspections can
reveal the density of any vegetation that may need to be removed and reveal if there are any harmful plants like poison ivy growing. Many DIYers can remove small trees on their own, but a professional tree service may be necessary for large trees or those located close to the house. Homeowners won’t want to cut down a tree, even a small one, if it can potentially fall onto the house. In addition, homeowners who are unfamiliar with chippers or stump grinders may be better of hiring a tree service to clear trees.
Don’t go it alone. No one should clear land alone. Even small projects are best tackled by at least two people. Should someone get injured during the project, the presence of another person ensures someone can immediately call for help. In addition, clearing land can be more difficult than it appears, and having at least two people to pull old shrubs or carry tree branches reduces the risk of injury. Safety should be the utmost priority as homeowners prepare to clear land on their properties. —MetroCreative

Secondary, short-field chances key Bulldogs’ win By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
RICHMOND – Relentless defense and two high snaps on Armstrong’s two attempted first-quarter punts led to two first-half scores by Goochland’s offense, and the Bulldogs pulled away on a scoring burst in the final 6 minutes to deny the hosting Wildcats 27-6. “It feels good. Especially after two weeks ago, after the Collegiate loss, it feels good to bounce back after we put in a new offense,” said Goochland’s Derek Pierce, who caught a late-game interception and returned it a whopping 90 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs’ secondary heavily enforced a no-fly zone whenever the Wildcats’ offense tried to go for big-play passes. “It all comes with the practice – we practice every day as hard as we can,” Pierce said, “and then the results are here on Friday.” Pierce with his fiery picksix and Eyan Pace with a third-quarter interception near the end zone epitomized the Bulldogs’ defensive backs’ lockdown play. “Give Armstrong a ton of credit, because they did a really good job coming in with a good offensive game plan,” Goochland head coach Alex Fruth said while adding: “Our kids just responded well on that part of the field.” Armstrong had a big chance to score early after Leonte Oulahi barreled all the way down to Goochland’s 14-yard line on a huge punt return early in the first quarter. But Goochland’s defense only allowed 2 yards on the drive before a delay-of-game penalty backed the Wildcats up to Goochland’s 17. Dylan Myers pressured the quarterback on

an incomplete fourth-down pass that turned the ball back over to the Bulldogs’ offense. Following another Goochland punt, Armstrong, starting on its 27, moved as far up as its own 31 due to a penalty against the Bulldogs, but was subsequently held to a punt attempt. Armstrong’s snap flew too high, and while the punter managed to field it, he had to fall on the ball on the Wildcats’ 4 as Goochland’s Nik Cotner rushed in to check him. A penalty against Armstrong halved the distance to the goal, and Jamason Pryor helped give his Bulldogs a 7-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run to the right. The Wildcats finally broke through for a first down, but they were held to midfield
with Pryor in the secondary denying a deep passing shot by the home team, forcing the punt. “I think we got them out of what they wanted to do. They want to run the ball, and once they got out of their comfort zone and were willing to get out of their comfort zone, that’s a different game,” Fruth said. “They’re not going to be as efficient at what they want to do when they have to go to the things that they need to do.” Armstrong had another high snap, and the punter was blown up in the backfield, with Cotner’s tackle placing the Bulldogs’ offense on the Wildcats’ 33. Gabe Liptak needed just two plays to cover the remaining distance to the end zone, as
he broke a tackle and sprinted up the middle on a 27-yard tear to help increase his team’s advantage to 14-0. Goochland’s defense bent on its next series – Armstrong moved the chains from its own 20 to the Bulldogs’ 34 – but it didn’t break. Corey Mullins led the way on a sack to make it 4th and 10 for Armstrong on the 39, and Justin Morton made the tackle to force a change of possession back to Goochland’s offense. Aidan Allen defended another deep shot during the Wildcats’ next offensive series, which stalled out and led to yet another turnover on downs in the half. Armstrong opened the third quarter on another steady march, but saw the
series end on the pick by Pace. The Wildcats would go on to string together two long passes from quarterback Devon Cheatham to Oulahi to push the ball down to the Bulldogs’ 30, but proceeded to lose 15 yards as De’Andre Robinson dished out a 10-yard sack and Alex Rosenbaum wrapped up the ball carrier who recovered a botched snap for a loss on the next play. But Oulahi converted the daunting first down on a zigzagging run down into the Bulldogs’ red zone, and Cheatham swept around the left side and into the end zone to put the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the early part of the fourth quarter. Armstrong’s extra-point attempt was blocked.
After Goochland punted again, the Bulldogs swarmed Armstrong’s ball carrier for a loss to force fourth down, and Pierce picked off the deep strike that followed. From the 10-yard line, Pierce tore down the left-field sideline. “I thought I had a lot of green, and then I’d seen two black jerseys coming towards me,” Pierce said, “so I cut back across the field – I’d seen I had a blocker over there.” Pierce rumbled the rest of the way into the end zone for the pick-six. A big loss on a fumble recovered by Armstrong on its next drive and a short punt gave the Bulldogs’ offense the ball on another shortfield opportunity, and Liptak capped the drive with an 11-yard slice up the middle for his second rushing touchdown of the night. Goochland’s defense put the exclamation mark on its standout effort when it recovered a fumble with 1:30 left in the game. Tyler Black landed 3 of 4 point-after touchdown kicks. “It boosts us a lot, honestly,” Pierce said of the win against Armstrong. “But we’re going to start back on Monday, start working for Western Albemarle.” Goochland will officially begin Jefferson District regular-season play, beginning with this coming Friday’s home game versus Western at 7 p.m. From here on out, Fruth expects that his team will have a “pretty good test” each and every week of district play. “Everybody’s got some kind of weapon and some kid who’s probably as good as they get,” Fruth said. “We’ll have a pretty good challenge ahead of us.”

Goochland volleyball earns dominant win at home By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Goochland volleyball returned to its home gym after two hard-fought regular-season setbacks and a fourth-place tournament finish the weekend prior to rout Charlottesville in straight sets (25-13, 25-6, 25-15) on Thursday evening. “It feels good – it’s a nice way to get things rolling going into our next few weeks,” said Goochland head coach Rachel Jacobsen. “We had that week off (between the second and third games of the season) and there’s been a lot going on, so it’s nice to get a win under our belts, especially at home, and set the tone for the coming week.” Goochland showcased its depth, with everyone on the roster getting to contribute to Thursday’s win. Senior Jasmine Price and freshman Ava Garrison both made attacks for points, and sophomore Adele Wheatley mixed into the setter role to contribute assists, digs and attacks, including a dink to cap a point kept alive by Goochland senior Libero Blair Bussells, who had a onehanded save in the second set. Charlottesville returned Wheatley’s dink into the net. “Adele played really, really well,” Jacobsen said. “She’s real-

ly, really quick. We’re working on her defense, and she’s really, really excited to just keep learning and working on things… she’s having a lot of fun.” Wheatley delivered 6 service aces and served for 8 straight points in the second set. Senior Marina Stratiou also shined in the setter role. She delivered 4 aces, and she and Wheatley each contributed 12
assists and two digs. Bussells continued to excel at tracking down the ball on defense and going low for saves. She led the team with seven digs and added 3 aces. Goochland defensive specialist Audrey Dolan made multiple diving saves, including a phenomenal falling touch on an attack-receive that senior outside hitter Nova Wonderling finished off with a send-over.
Wonderling launched the ball over her head and behind her, with the ball clearing the net for a point. Dolan tallied up five digs and added 2 aces. “She’s just so aggressive – she’s all over the place,” Jacobsen said of Dolan. “She’s so much fun to be around. She really works hard. She’s always out here to win, and has a great attitude.” Wonderling racked up 7
kills and added 3 aces and two digs. Juniors and heavy hitters Nina Smith, Layla Ford, Nicole Brown and Laura Lee Baldwin also contributed kills in Thursday’s win. “It’s so important to make sure that everybody’s getting opportunities. If you’re not working in players when you have the chance to, they’re not going to be prepared when you need to toss them in last-min-
ute,” Jacobsen said. “It’s really important for just future preparedness in general to make sure that everybody’s getting playing time.” In last Tuesday’s narrow 5-set loss to Fluvanna, Stratiou had 21 assists, three digs and an ace, Ford racked up 8 blocks, 7 kills, an ace and a dig, Wonderling had 7 kills and two digs and Bussells made 11 digs and 2 aces. Prior to playing the Flying Flucos, Goochland placed fourth in a tournament in Albemarle County the weekend prior and picked up wins against Western and Courtland. “The girls played really, really well. They were working hard together,” Jacobsen said. The Bulldogs’ win over Western came two days after the Warriors had defeated Goochland in four sets, and Jacobsen said it was exciting to get the win, although she noted that both teams were missing players. “But it was still nice to get a win,” Jacobsen said. “Hopefully when we see them again, everybody will be well and available and we can really show our stuff.” Goochland this coming week will play at Monticello on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and will host Albemarle on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Conservation group’s latest effort: preserve endangered farm land Farmland Trust’s “Farms Under Threat” report and U.S. Agricultural Census data, the Richmond region has experienced a loss of approximately 87,539 acres of farmland since 1982 – a conversion rate of more than 25 percent. Capital Region Land Conservancy, which serves Goochland as well as Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, and Powhatan, is among the first land trusts in the nation to explore RCPP’s new easement options authorized in the 2018 Farm Bill to help reverse this trend. Capital Region Land Conservancy (CRLC) is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) on a new initiative to protect wildlife habitat and water quality while preserving farmland in the Richmond metropolitan area. NRCS will provide $2,081,169 through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) to fund CRLC’s proposal, “Preserving Working Farms and Securing Urban Ag,” which focuses on accelerating the rate of land protection in the area. NRCS could also be the holder of conservation easements and provide greater financial assistance to landowners. In addition to preserving farmland through the partial purchase of conservation easements, CRLC’s project includes activities that support urban agriculture. Most farmers and ranchers lease the property where they work (often without longterm contracts) because it is generally more expensive and less affordable to acquire the land. Despite invest© Zap2it

Welcoming fall Tips, ideas and activities to help make the most of the season Fun facts about autumn Weather is often the first indicator that the seasons are changing. For many people across the globe, the hot days of summer will soon be giving way to the more crisp days of fall. For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on September 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two different names is just one of many interesting facts about fall. A season by any other name . Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox. The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear. Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried. Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.
Planting fall vegetables Tending to backyard vegetable gardens can fill many hours of enjoyable downtime in the great outdoors. What’s more, the bounty produced by such gardens provides healthy, fresh foods to gardeners and their loved ones. Although spring and summer are widely seen as the peak of gardening season, the mild temperatures of autumn can be a prime time for planting vegetables as well. Certain late-season treats like carrots, kale, spinach, and turnips can thrive in fall gardens. Many different foods are quick crops that can go from seed to table in about six weeks. When sown in early fall, these vegetables will be ready to put on the table for mid-October feasts. Beets, green onions, broccoli, and cabbages can be planted in late summer for fall harvest. Gardeners who live in hardiness zones eight through 10 (the southern portion of the United States) can plant fall vegetables as late as December. Many of these plants can tolerate light frost, which may even help sweeten the vegetables. A handful of unique factors need to be taken into consideration when planning fall vegetable gardens. The summertime location of the garden may still be adequate, but be sure to choose a location that gets eight full hours of sunlight per day. If using an existing garden site, clear out any detritus from summer plants and any weeds that have sprouted. If you are planting a new garden, remove any turf before tilling the soil. Amend the soil with sand, compost, manure fertilizer, and any other nutrients needed depending on the types of vegetables you intend to grow. While fall vegetables can be grown successfully from seeds, it may be more time-friendly to work from larger transplants, advises the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. Some plants may need a little protection as they grow if temperatures begin to dip. Cover with a blanket, cardboard box or plastic tunnel to insulate. Remember to water according to the vegetables planted and to keep an eye on readiness for vegetables. Turnips, beets, rutabagas,

and carrots can be dug out when the roots are plump and crisp. Vegetable gardens need not cease when the last days of summer vanish. Fall produce is delicious and can be easily planted and harvested even after the first frost.

Autumn is marked by colorful foliage and plummeting temperatures. Once those leaves reach peak color, they fall from the branches and collect on lawns, necessitating cleanup projects. For homeowners with big yards, such a project can be tiring and timeconsuming. However, there are ways to make leaf cleanup easier. One of the easiest ways to clean up leaves is to reach for a lawn mower rather than a rake. The mower will cut leaves down to smaller sizes, creating an effective mulch that can add nutrients back into the lawn. Davey, a lawn and landscape solutions service, says that mowed leaves also can be collected in a mower bag and added to garden beds or compost piles. For those who prefer manual raking, select a rake with tines that will not skewer the leaves in the process. Big rakes also can make faster work of gathering leaves into piles. The home improvement resource The Family Handyman advocates for the use of a lawn sweeper. This is a manual device that has a rotating sweeping brush that gathers up lawn debris and leaves into an attached hopper bag. Like mowed leaves, the bag can be emptied into a compost pile or distributed where needed. Raking leaves onto a large tarp is another option. Once it’s full, the tarp can be taken to the curb where many towns will collect the leaves seasonally. Otherwise, the tarp can be used as a funnel to put leaves into a gardening bag or another appropriate receptacle. Leaf blowers remain a fast option for cleaning up yards, but they require electricity or gas and can be noisy. Still, they are a popular choice for large landscapes or when quick work needs to be made of leaf clean-up.
Stay safe this Halloween Much like Christmas, Halloween is no longer relegated to a single day. A number of Halloween enthusiasts now begin decorating at the start of October. Hijinks and autumn revelry fill the air as individuals eagerly count down to the end of the month. Though the lightheartedness of Halloween festivities, such as costumes and candy, garner the bulk of celebrants’ attention, it’s important to take safety into consideration as well. According to the Mayo Clinic, children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween as other nights of the year. Cuts and burns also are more common on Oct. 31. A good Halloween scare should come from costumes, not accidents or injuries. This Halloween, consider these safety measures, courtesy of Safe Kids Worldwide, the Mayo Clinic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Make sure you’re visible when trick-or-treating. Reflective tape, glow sticks, flashlights, or camping lanterns can make pedestrians more visible to motorists.

Pedestrians should walk on sidewalks if they are available. When sidewalks are not available, walk facing traffic and do so as far off to the side of the road as you can get. Drivers should be especially alert to pedestrians on Halloween. Drive slowly, as many kids scurry from house to house in search of Halloween candy. Pedestrians and drivers should follow the rules of the road, stopping at intersections and crossing in crosswalks. Consider alternatives to carving pumpkins, since the risk of being cut while carving is high. If you want to carve, leave the carving to adults. Utilize battery-operated flameless candles or glow sticks to illuminate jack-o’-lanterns. All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant. Make sure that costumes do not impede your ability to walk or see. Test makeup to check for skin irritation before application. Remove it promptly after returning home. Set up a buddy system so that no one is going it alone. Agree on a specific time children should return home. Adults should chaperone young children.
Seven uses for fallen leaves It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneficial. 1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the plants within a bit warmer over winter. 2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil. 3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them. 4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow. 5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight. 6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost. 7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect.
