Local venue enjoying star turn in Hulu series Scenes from project about opioid crisis shot at the majestic River Run property By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Those tuning in to watch the upcoming “Dopesick,” an 8-part, limited series launching on Hulu Oct. 13, may just recognize a local landmark. Goochland’s The Estate at River Run will be prominently featured throughout the entire series, which stars Hollywood A-List actors
Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rosario Dawson, and features episodes directed by Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson. The wedding and events venue on River Road served as the location for scenes set at the home of Perdue Pharma CEO, Richard Sackler.
Perdue Pharma is the developer and manufacturer of the opium-based painkiller, OxyContin. The “Dopesick” limited TV series is based on the novel of the same name written by Roanoke, Virginia author Beth Macy. The book explores see Series > 4

Every Saturday from October through March, at the old Ragland Woodyard just west of the Courthouse in Goochland, Goochland Rotary members perform a vital service for the community. These folks are part of the Goochland Rotary Club Woodchuckers. Armed with chain saws, wood-splitters and pickup trucks they cut, split and deliver firewood to vulnerable families of the Goochland community that rely on wood to heat their homes throughout the winter. The Goochland Rotary Woodchuckers have been active for over 16 years. The group evolved as a club service project to assist members of the community with their winter home heating needs. The wood supply they use is donated from private citizens and local companies in the construction and land development businesses. “We are really fortunate to have the support of companies like Liesfield see Woodchuckers > page 2

County voters set to weigh in on two bond referendum questions Contributed report
Goochland voters are weighing in on two bond referendum questions on the election ballot that will determine how the county will fund approved capital projects. In Virginia, counties are required to secure voter approval prior to issuing General Obligation Bonds. “The Board of Supervisors has already approved the proposed school and county projects in its Capital Improvement Program budget,” Manuel Alvarez, Jr., interim county administrator said. “What’s on the ballot is how these projects will be funded. “If we were to pay cash for the projects instead of taking

In an average year, the club cuts and splits between 100 and 150 pickup truck loads of wood and delivers them to client families that are referred to them by Goochland Cares. “Last year, Rotary’s Woodchucking program helped more than 30 Goochland Cares families stay warm by providing firewood,” said Sally Graham, Rotary member and Executive Director of Goochland Cares. “These families cannot afford another heat source and depend on this wood to heat their homes. They include many elderly residents who are among the most vulnerable of our neighbors. Goochland Cares’ partnership with Goochland Rotary is a great example of how our
on debt, it would either take us many years to save enough money to fund the projects or we would need to increase the tax rate for several years in order to collect through taxes the cash needed on an annual basis for these projects,” Alvarez said. “Issuing bonds spreads the cost of long-life major projects over time, ensuring that both current and future residents share in the payment of the cost of the community’s long-term projects.” Goochland County’s financial management policies have resulted in two triple-A bond ratings, the most favorable ratings available to governmental entities. “Because
of this, the County will be able to obtain the lowest possible interest rates for the bonds available in the market,” Alvarez said. “Additionally, the bond program is designed not to contribute to an increase in property tax rates,” he said. “We’ve worked to provide citizens with the information they need to cast informed votes on the two bond questions,” Alvarez said. “Citizens who want more information should visit our website at www.goochlandva.us/bonds or attend one of the upcoming Town Halls. While the work is hard and the conditions can be challenging, the Rotary Woodchuckers enjoy the fellowship time together and the teamwork that the service project fosters. GoochlandCares set to once again host ‘Bridges’ fundraiser as an online event Contributed report
GoochlandCares is, once again, moving its signature community event and fundraiser - Building Bridges of Hope - online. As we navigate this “new normal,” we are asking YOU our friends - to reflect on the impact GoochlandCares has in your life. How does GoochlandCares help you in Building Bridges of Hope? Here are some of our most inspiring stories this year. Maria moved here eight years ago. Her husband is a front-line worker on a local farm that doesn’t offer health insurance. They have five children from the ages of 18 to 3. Her family struggles to make ends meet on one income and she isn’t sure how she would feed her family each week if it weren’t for GoochlandCares Food Pantry. The Clothes Closet also provided for the all the members of her family. This year, she was able to outfit her kids with the things they needed for back to school. Our Dental Clinic has been a lifeline to Maria. She was finally able to have her wisdom teeth extracted, and our Medical Clinic has treated several viral infections over the years and addressed her respiratory issues. Linda was first a donor who donated excess organic produce from her garden to our Food Pantry for several years before life took a turn. Her husband was experiencing mental health issues and was hospitalized without health insurance or income. They needed food and medical care while they waited for their Medicaid and unemployment to come in. Linda recalled that coming
to GoochlandCares to shop was the only time she was able to escape the deprivation that she was experiencing. “When life’s circumstances remove your choices, the little things are impactful. Many weeks it was the only time I could make a choice in my life.” Our Food Pantry has provided this family with fresh, organic produce, just like she was used to growing and donating. Long-time volunteers Sarah and Richard Dixon feel GoochlandCares is Building Bridges of Hope in their lives. “COVID-19 really reminded us how much we value our time volunteering in the Food Pantry,” said Sarah. “We are so lucky to be a part of GoochlandCares. We know our time and efforts are helping our neighbors. Since we retired, GoochlandCares has become a central part of our routine.” Nothing substitutes hearing directly from our clients and volunteers. Obituary MUNTEAN, Frank Raymond Sr., died on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at age 86. Frank was born in Wheeling, W.Va. and grew up in Canton, Ohio. He was the son of the late Mary Victoria and Frank Muntean. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Brenda Satterwhite Muntean; his sons, Frank R. Muntean Jr. and his wife, Janet, John C. Muntean and Muntean his wife, Mindy; and his daughter, Victoria Muntean Krupp and her husband, Kyle. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Frank R. Muntean III and his wife, Diana, Samantha M. Grinnell and her husband, Chase; and great-grandchildren, Sophia,
Tessa, Eliza Muntean and Mason Grinnell. Frank served four years in the Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Massey DD 778. After his discharge from the Navy, he moved to Richmond and started his rewarding and enjoyable career in the telecommunications industry, working for Western Electric, Bell Labs, AT&T and retiring from Verizon after 39 years of service. Frank was a 53-year member of the Richmond Masonic Lodge #10, but jobs and health issues later in life prevented his attendance at lodge meetings. Frank was active in sports all his life. He served a number of years as commissioner of Metro Youth Football in the Richmond area and was evening supervisor for Henrico County Recreation and Parks (Sport Department). As a young
man, his love of sports led him to golf. Fifty-five years ago, he joined Hermitage Country Club to see if he could master the game. He never did. However, the fellowship as a Board member, gin partner and cigar-smoking Taproom member made it all worthwhile. He was affectionately known as “the Godfather” by many in the Taproom. A memorial service will be held at Springfield Christian Church, 18285 Vontay Road, Rockville, Va. 23146 at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 16, 2021. There will be a reception following the service. Development, Bill Gilliam, negotiated the terms of the deal with the TV production company and then served as location director for each of the three shoots there. “It was amazing to see the production process unfold,” said Gilliam. “Each person I dealt with was incredibly nice, professional, and focused on their job. Our venue is a very pristine place, and I was impressed at the extent to which the entire crew went
to protect it from damage and be respectful of the property. They were awesome to work with.” The Estate at River Run coowner and proprietress Kim Moody said she was delighted that the property could be part of the production, particularly since the filming came during a time when the state was experiencing COVID-19 related shutdowns in the event and wedding industry. “Our property was very
grateful for the work, and it was a blessing to have the property utilized for something so remarkable that the American Public will get to see,” said Moody, who also serves as the Director of Events at The Estate. “It was wonderful that so much of the filming was completed in the Commonwealth of Virginia and supported small businesses during this time of economic shutdown in the event industry.”

In the kitchen, age-old rules still apply By Roslyn Ryan Editor

omewhere out there, our Nonnas are laughing at us. If you didn’t grow up with a Nonna of your own, have no fear. The same idea applies whether you had a Granny or a Nanny or a Nana or a Yaya. Did you have an Abuela? Then you get the idea. The point is, when it comes to the way many of us modern humans go about the task of sourcing, cooking and serving food, those venerated women who came before us might find themselves genuinely bewildered. To be sure, the basic principles remain the same: take the very best raw ingredients that you can get your hands on, stir them together, add heat, and use that mixture to keep the people you love alive. What would throw our grandmothers off, I’m willing to bet, would be the rest of it. The elaborate table settings culled from Pinterest. The recipe that calls for a trip to a specialty grocery store for an ultra-specific ingredient that you can only buy in a 3-pound bag even though you only need three tablespoons. The organic everything. The $230 pot. The oven designed by NASA engineers. What on Earth, they might ask, holding up yet another kitchen gadget you bought and used exactly once, is this? They might gently (or not so gently, depending on your particular granny) suggest that you could have grown those lovely and expensive heirloom tomatoes yourself for far cheaper than you bought them by the pound at the grocery store, and that eating strawberries in late November is just plain odd, especially when they have to be trucked in from another coun-
try. And what good is a ridiculously expensive pot if you always burn the garlic? You don’t need a special pot for that! They might be impressed by the vast collection of recipes you have saved on your phone, but also suggest that being able to perfect five dishes your family loves is better than attempting a new one every night. You burn the garlic every time passerotta because you are trying to do too many things at once. Slow down. Le prima lezione e fare attenzione. The first lesson is pay attention. If you don’t have this one thing, they might say, just use a bit of that other thing. Fancy doesn’t always mean better. Don’t overthink it. Make sure you have an extra chair if company comes and don’t beat yourself up if things don’t come out exactly as you planned. If you were not blessed to be able to spend time in the kitchen with your grandmother, that doesn’t mean you can’t still take these

A fond farewell to local sports Nicholas Vandeloecht Sports Editor
When I walked into the Northern Neck News office in the summer of 2012, I was down on my luck. My road to becoming a teacher had hit a dead-end, and I was back at square-one, looking into professions in which I had little to no prior training in college. But I had done some writing for newspapers in the past. People seemed to like my work. Why not give journalism another shot? Even if, at that moment in time, the only opportunity available at the NNN was freelance work. But I was in no position to turn down even the smallest opportunity. After all, who’s to say it won’t turn into something big? And it did. Journalism has been my life now for more than nine years. I’ve held the roles of reporter, news editor and sports editor. The trade has taken me to several different corners of the state, and even outside of it. I’ve met a lot of great people, and I’ve had the chance to tell many wonderful stories. But no job has been better than this one. Powhatan Today and The Goochland Gazette have been an absolute joy to be a part of. This is the best staff I’ve worked with, and I feel extremely fortunate to have coordinated sports coverage for two of the best and friendliest athletic communities in the state in Powhatan and Goochland. The people here have made the job extremely enjoyable, and when it comes to small-town newspapers, I don’t know if there’s a better sports editor position to hold in Virginia. But as time goes on, priorities

Goochland Day organizers offer recap of event to BOS By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Some people celebrate a big victory with a parade. But for the small group of local residents behind this year’s wildly successful Goochland Day, a parade was the victory — or at least part of it. As organizers Carey Stagg and Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda explained to county supervisors last week, the Sept. 25 parade involved a tremendous amount of work on the part of fellow Goochland Day board member and parade chair Annette Jones, who singlehandedly organized every detail of the event. In the end, around 45 different groups, led by Grand Marshall Sheriff Steven Creasey, marched or drove the .6 mile route from Goochland Holiness Church to Earls Rd., and over 3,000 spectators cheered from the roadsides. It was the first time the parade had been held in
Farewell continued from >6 change, and with those changes come new opportunities. And just as was the case nine years ago, another opportunity has come along that I couldn’t say no to. Starting October 18, 2021, I begin my new position as a Communications Assistant for the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority. I’m very excited to work with a new team at Virginia ABC, and the schedule, as well as the desire to move from journalism to communications, reflects my current goals in life. This will be a major change, but while I’m nervous, I’m just

Goochland in over 20 years, and pulling it together was no small feat. Not only did Jones organize the entire parade, but she also managed the bus drivers for the shuttle buses and oversaw t-shirts and banners for the event. “She was a one-stop shop,” said Stagg. As exciting as it was, the parade was just the start of the day’s festivities, which also included the highly anticipated Goochland Day festival at the county’s Sports Complex. There, over 8,000 people enjoyed games, music, food, vendors and picture-perfect weather to boot. “It was truly a success,” said Nelson-Lyda, recalling the countless hours of planning and organizing that had been required to ensure a safe, enjoyable afternoon was provided at no cost to attendees. It was a challenging process on many fronts, she said, but also something she and the other
board members knew was truly needed as the community continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. A beloved local tradition dating back to the 1950s, Goochland Day got its start as a way for the Goochland County Volunteer Fire Department to raise money to buy a fire truck after Dover Baptist Church burned down. This year’s event had been in the works for several years, said Nelson-Lyda, who had spearheaded the project as a way to bring Goochland residents together to celebrate the place they call home. Those who missed this year’s Goochland Day need not worry: As Stagg told supervisors, another Goochland Day is already being planned for May 7, and the County’s Tricentennial Celebration will take place in 2028. “We don’t know how big that event will be,” said Stagg with a smile. “But we’re taking ideas.”
as excited. With this major change comes another one: I will no longer be serving in the role of sports editor for Powhatan Today and The Goochland Gazette. But please know that this isn’t goodbye. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to assist Richmond Suburban Newspapers as a contributing writer for the foreseeable future. It’s important to me to remain a part of the local sports community no matter how small or large my role. I also look forward to assisting the new sports editor if and when he or she embraces the role. But I know that person will be in good hands. For now, Mechanicsville
Local sports editor David Lawrence (dlawrence@goochlandgazette.com), RSN managing editor Laura McFarland (lmcfarland@powhatantoday. com) and Goochland Gazette editor Roslyn Ryan (rryan@ goochlandgazette.com) are the best points of contact for contributing sports news and story suggestions for Powhatan Today and The Goochland Gazette. I’ll no longer be the point of contact, but I still look forward to contributing to RSN’s continuing goal of providing superb local coverage of news and athletic events featuring the counties of Goochland, Hanover and Powhatan. And I still look forward to seeing you on the sidelines.

No injuries reported after midnight blaze destroys home By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A not-occupied home was left in ruins last week after a massive late-night blaze engulfed the structure on Dover Branch Lane in eastern Goochland. Just after midnight on Friday, Oct. 8, Goochland County Department of FireRescue and Emergency Services responded to the property after a neighbor reported the fire. The first fire unit arrived to find heavy fire that had already consumed nearly 70 % of the two-story single-family dwelling. First arriving crews initiated a defensive attack with hand lines that quickly transitioned to an elevated aerial ladder master stream operation.
According to county FireRescue officials, the home is in an area that does not have fire hydrants in the neighborhood. Fire crews initiated a rural water supply operation and tankers shuttled water from two nearby fire hydrants approximately a mile from the scene. Crews estimate approximately 112,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. According to information provided by Goochland County Fire-Rescue, the house was an unoccupied new home in the final stages of construction, estimated to be over 8K square feet in size. Twenty-four Goochland
County Fire-Rescue personnel responded to the incident, and Powhatan County Fire Rescue provided a mutual aid tanker and other support. Henrico County Division of Fire assisted by covering an EMS call in eastern Goochland occurring at the same time as the fire. The Metro Richmond Flying Squad responded and provided fire ground rehabilitation, serving water, coffee, and snacks to the personnel on the fire scene. Goochland County FireRescue Chief Eddie Ferguson commended all personnel for working safely and diligently throughout the night and into the next day, as they worked to control and extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In The Garden
A late (and lovely) bloomer By Cathy McCarthy Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener
T
he weather in Central Virginia in October can be glorious. Cool mornings and gentle sunlight during the afternoons can make it a perfect time to be outside. However, the landscape in our back yards can be somewhat dull at this time of year. Perhaps that’s why so many people purchase potted mums from big box stores to temporarily brighten things up. However, there’s another, more perennial solution that provides the same great fall color with additional benefits – asters. While mums (Chrysanthemum spp.) are an imported East Asian plant, many aster species (Symphyotrichum spp) are native to the eastern United States. Being a native perennial plant means asters are usually easy to grow and tough to kill in your garden. It also means that native pollinators like bees and butterflies are adapted to use them as host plants. Their autumn bloom times contribute a critical source of late season nectar and pollen for bees and local butterflies preparing for winter and for migrating monarch butterflies. I saw five monarchs descend on my asters for an afternoon last week and couldn’t help but hope that my aster waystation refueled these stragglers along their thousand mile journey to Mexico. Asters have very simple needs. If you can find a sunny spot with average, well-drained soil in your yard you can successfully grow an aster. It’s not required, but if you want to avoid
staking the taller varieties, then you can ‘pinch’ asters in late June/ early July. The term ‘pinching’ basically means cutting the plant down by about a third to encourage the main stalk to produce more side shoots (and blooms) and to bloom at a shorter height. Pollinators preparing for winter need a buffet rather than a single entrée, so if you can plant asters in groups of three or more plants that will help them out. The hardest part in choosing which aster to grow is the sheer selection. They come in almost any color and vary in height from twelve inch ankle biters to six foot giants. Some varieties that do well in Central Virginia that you might want to consider are: Purple Dome (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae ‘Purple Dome’) : These shorter (18-24”) plants are great for the front of the border. The purple color is intense and contrasts beautifully with the yellow centers. Because little else is blooming at this time of year, that eye catching color can become a focal point. A profuse bloomer, this plant does tend to grow as the name suggests in a dense, rounded dome shape.
Favorite’): If you would like the same blue color scheme and aromatic foliage but need more height in your garden, consider the variety ‘Raydon’s Favorite’. It grows to about 3’ tall but only 1-2’ wide so it can be placed in some narrower openings in your border. The Mt. Cuba Center conducts many stringently monitored plant trials and calls ‘Raydon’s Favorite’ one of its most reliable bloomers. High praise from such a reliable, unbiased source means you are likely to have the same success in your landscape. Alma Potschke (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae ‘Andenken an Alma Pötschke›): The intense rose pink color of the blooms makes this variety another option if you are trying to draw the eye to a focal point. At about three feet in height and width, it’s a fast growing plant that typically blooms for six weeks or more starting in September. Even after pinching, the plant form comes across as billowy and can lend a softer feel around more rigid shrub forms. There are certainly many more aster options than just these four. If you enjoy the research process, visit mobot.org/plantfinder to access the Missouri Botanical Garden’s extensive plant database. Whichever native aster you choose to plant in your garden, you and your pollinator population are sure to benefit during these fleeting, but oh so beautiful October days.
October Skies (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium ‘October Skies’): This aster is also about 18” tall, but can spread out to about twice that width. The flowers are indeed a gentle sky blue and therefore are a more subtle presence in your landscape. Blooms cover this plant and so do pollinators. A special feature of this species is the aromatic Cathy McCarthy is a certified Master foliage. When you brush your hand along the Gardener through the Virginia Cooperative leaves or bring in a sprig for a bouquet, the Extension and a member of the Goochland herbal scent that is released is a nice bonus. Seniors warned about ‘utility scam’ as temperatures drop Contributed Report AARP Virginia regularly sends out scam alerts to notify residents of popular scams that are being used by criminals to take advantage of people. They advise people to be aware of the scenarios and make sure those
who may be vulnerable know what signs to look for as well. Utility scams heat up as the temperatures rise (and when they fall), so much so that the Federal Trade Commission ranks utility impostors among the top reported scams. In
this one, you typically get a call, email or text saying your account is past due and you must pay immediately, or they will cut off your power. Another tactic is the “utility” claiming you overpaid your bill, and they request your bank account
information to issue a refund. Utility scammers can also show up at your door after a power outage offering to get your power back on for a fee. Utility companies typically don’t do business this way. Any unusual communication
from your utility should raise a flag. Disengage and contact your provider at a number you know to be legitimate (off of a recent statement, for example). Chances are you’ll learn that there is no problem to address. The AARP Fraud Watch
Network is a free resource for all. Learn how to proactively spot scams or get guidance if you’ve been targeted. Visit www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork or call our dedicated helpline to speak to a fraud specialist at 1-877-908-3360.

Bulldogs roll past Charlottesville on Homecoming By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND -- The Bulldogs’ relentless defense continued, if not epitomized, its standout play in Friday’s Homecoming game versus Charlottesville. The stalwart unit forced five turnovers – three on fumbles, two on interceptions – and scored not one, but two safeties in addition to a touchdown on a fumble return in Goochland’s 25-6 rout of the visiting Black Knights. “Defense has played lights out,” said Goochland head coach Alex Fruth. “They did a great job up front, in the secondary – the whole nine yards.” The Bulldogs held Charlottesville to 143 total yards of offense (120 rushing, 23 passing). De’Andre Robinson was in on five tackles, recovered a fumble and scored the team’s first safety to make it 9-0 in the first quarter. Enrique Alvarez also continued to shine up front as he was in on six tackles, including two for loss, and scored the team’s second safety in the fourth.

Goochland’s Jason Woodson (6) caught a touchdown pass in his Bulldogs’ 25-6 win over Charlottesville on Homecoming.
The versatile C.J. Towles once again scored from both sides of the ball. At quarterback, he threw a 29-yard scoring strike to Jason Woodson to help Goochland lead 16-0
in the second quarter. Towles at defensive back helped bolster his team’s lead to 23-0 in the third quarter when he recovered a fumble and took it to the house for his second
touchdown on the night. He also caught an interception. Deontae Quarles recorded six tackles, including two for loss, and linebacker Corey Mullins, whom Fruth said was
“everywhere,” dished out five tackles, including two for loss. Carter Payne was also in on five tackles. J.D. Mills caught an interception, and Justin Morton
recovered a fumble. Derek Pierce and Eyan Pace also contributed to a secondary that helped hold Charlottesville to 2 of 11 passing. Goochland’s defense gave the offensive unit a short field to work with on its first touchdown drive of the night. Running back Gabe Liptak put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Tyler Black kicked 3 of 3 PATs and sent two of his four kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Black also excelled at punting. He pinned Charlottesville inside the 20 prior to Goochland’s first scoring drive of the game and consistently forced Charlottesville’s offense to march the long field, thus leading to the two safeties. “His foot has been a blessing on the punt side,” Fruth said of Black while adding: “Between our punt team and our defense, we looked really good in those aspects of the game.” The Bulldogs (4-2) have earned back-to-back wins going into their next matchup. They will play at Monticello High School this Friday at 7 p.m.

Goochland volleyball outlasts Deep Run in 5 sets By Nick Vandeloecht, Sports Editor
GLEN ALLEN -- In a Monday match featuring major momentum swings, Goochland volleyball persevered, outlasting Deep Run in the tiebreaking set with a 6-1 run in the closing stretch to win 3-2 (25-20, 10-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-10). “We’re proud of the girls for closing and staying focused for five sets,” said Goochland head coach Rachel Jacobsen. Senior Libero Blair Bussells on the receive and sophomore Adele Wheatley in the setting position provided a consistent 1-2 base for Goochland’s attackers to go for points not only from the outside – senior Nova Wonderling’s hammering arm turned many a ball into an unblockable rocket on Monday – but also from up the middle, with Laura Lee Baldwin and Layla Ford able to attack for points off the opposing blocks, as well as spot-kill the ball in uncovered court. “Adele was doing a really nice job of connecting with her middles today,” Jacobsen said. “Laura Lee and Layla definitely got a lot more kills tonight

than normal just because they were connecting, and it makes a big difference. Middles get overlooked because…they get pushed as blockers…but when you’ve got a middle who’s running and hitting, you’re more likely to get some kills out of it, so it was exciting to see them connecting and utilizing that tonight.” Bussells continued to make
the unlikely saves, whether it meant running down an airball near the wall or going into a full dive on the floor to keep the point alive. She racked up 20 digs. Wheatley led the team with 23 assists, added 4 aces and served for eight straight points during a crucial 9-0 lead-taking run for Goochland in the first set.
Whenever Wonderling rose to the air to meet the ball, chances of the opponents making the return diminished greatly. The senior led the team with a whopping 18 kills and added 2 aces and five digs. Senior Audrey Dolan mixed in her own diving efforts to keep points alive as she made 10 digs for Goochland and added 1 ace
Benedictine routs Georgetown Prep Staff Reports
Benedictine football continued to build momentum following a 28-10 win over Woodberry Forest on Sept. 10 and a narrow, hard-fought 14-7 loss against a talented St. Christopher’s team on Oct. 1 when it routed Georgetown Prep 48-7 at home this past Saturday. The Cadets stormed out to a 20-0 firstquarter lead with two touchdowns passing and TD rushing and grew their advantage to 41-7 before halftime with the help of a touchdown on a kickoff return following the Hoyas’ lone score of the game.
Benedictine has drawn even at 3-3. The Cadets have two more road games left before ending the regular season on back-to-back matchups at home. Benedictine will next play at Collegiate in Richmond this coming Friday at 3:45 p.m. The Cadets’ final road game before the postseason will take place Friday, Oct. 22 at Avalon (Maryland) at 7 p.m. Benedictine’s Homecoming game will take place Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. and will feature Catholic High School as the opponent. The regular-season ends at home on Saturday, Nov. 6 with John Paul the Great coming to town for a 1 p.m. matchup.
off of her consistently linear serve. Versatile junior Nicole Brown mixed into the setting role with 15 assists, and she added five digs as she was able to make the reflexive onehanded saves on the opponents’ quick attacks. Brown also had 4 kills and 1 ace and helped secure the final 2 points for Goochland in the
fifth set. Jacobsen praised junior Nina Smith for “blocking all over the place.” “She’s just a wall up there,” Jacobsen said. On the following night, Goochland narrowly lost a hard-fought match to Western Albemarle in four sets (2521, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24). Wonderling led the team with 14 kills and added 3 aces, 2 blocks and nine digs. Bussells led the team defensively with 15 digs and added an ace. Brown led the team at setting with 26 assists and contributed 2 kills, an ace, a block and three digs. Baldwin contributed 6 kills and 3 blocks. Goochland also took a narrow 3-2 loss to Fluvanna on Thursday (25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 25-11, 15-13). Wonderling double-doubled with 18 kills and 10 digs, Bussells led the team with 13 digs and added 3 aces, Adele Wheatley racked up 18 assists and added five digs and an ace and Audrey Dolan contributed 5 aces and five digs. PUBLIC NOTICE United States of America Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Columbia Gas Transmission, LLC Docket No. CP21-498-000
The project scope includes: • Boswell’s Tavern Compressor Station – One (1) new, zeroemission electric motor compressor will be added, and existing electrical systems will be upgraded to increase system reliability.
Columbia Gas Transmission, LLC (or “Columbia”) has filed an application before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC” or “Commission”) in Docket No. CP21498-000. Columbia’s application proposes the Virginia Electrification Project (“VEP”), which will provide 35,000 dekatherms per day (Dth/d) of natural gas capacity on Columbia pipeline system.
• Boswell’s Tavern Meter Station – Facility upgrades to allow for additional capacity. • Goochland Compressor Station – Two (2) new, Dual Drive Technologies, Ltd.TM (“dual-drive”) compressors will replace all five (5) existing gas-powered compressor units. The new units will run primarily as electric units. To ensure local energy reliability, each unit will be capable of running on natural gas in the event of local power outages, thereby assuring customers retain their energy when needed most.
Description of Company: Columbia is a limited liability company organized and existing under the laws of the State of Delaware with its principal place of business located at 700 Louisiana Street, Suite 1300, Houston, Texas 77002-2700, and is indirectly wholly owned by TransCanada PipeLines, USA Ltd., through its wholly owned subsidiary, Columbia Pipeline Group, Inc. Columbia is a “natural-gas company” as defined under the Natural Gas Act, engaged primarily in the business of transporting natural gas and operating underground storage fields in interstate commerce under authorizations granted by and subject to the jurisdiction of the Commission. Columbia operates approximately 12,000 miles of natural gas pipeline, serving millions of customers from New York State to the Gulf of Mexico. Columbia is authorized to do business in the states of Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
• Petersburg Compressor Station- An increase of 1,250 horsepower at the existing Petersburg Compressor Station without any construction or change to the physical facilities at the station. Project Description: A map indicating the general location of construction associated with the Project is shown. More information on “VEP” can be found on its Project website: www.tcenergy.com/ operations/natural-gas/virginiaelectrification-project/ or its virtual open house website: www.tcenergyopenhouse.com/vep.
Project’s Purpose: The proposed Project consists of modifications at two existing compressor stations, expansion of one point of receipt, and a certificated horsepower increase at a third existing compressor station to create 35,000 Dth/d of incremental mainline capacity on Columbia’s pipeline system. The incremental capacity created by the Project will allow for open access firm transportation service to multiple points of delivery in Columbia’s Market Area 33 and Market Area 34, in southeast Virginia, to provide much needed natural gas supply to residential, commercial and industrial consumers in the State of Virginia, and will result in a net decrease in greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions on Columbia’s pipeline system.
For More Information: A copy of the application Columbia filed with FERC is available at: Louisa County Library, 881 Davis Highway, Mineral, VA 2311, Goochland Branch Library, 3075 River Road W, Goochland VA 23063, and the Petersburg Public Library, 201 W Washington Street, Petersburg VA 23803. The application is also accessible via FERC’s website. Go to www.ferc.gov, click on eLibrary (upper right-hand corner of screen) and perform a search using Docket No. CP21-498-000.
