GoochlandCares would like to thank all veterans for their service to our country, as well as to those who volunteer with us and throughout the nation. Their allegiance to serving our country and community is key for GoochlandCares’ commitment to neighbors helping neighbors.

Clinton Nicholas has added to his rich service history by volunteering at GoochlandCares for the last eight years. He was born here, and he will often say, “When I die, I hope it’s in Goochland.” Nicholas says of community service, “I always tried to help people the best I could. I enjoy being around people and have made a lot of friends here — volunteers and clients. Volunteering keeps you young.”

Jen Jensen, Army veteran and Goochland resident of three years, has found meaningful ways to serve. Donating clothes and hosting a fundraiser were ways that she said she could help local people and feel connected to her new home. “When you donate to GoochlandCares, you know exactly where it’s going.”

Diane Reale, Director of Volunteer Resources, added, “We are grateful to have several veterans serve in the GoochlandCares Volunteer Team. Their dedication to serving their community, drive, and leadership are an example to us all and help us to provide gold star service to our clients.”

continued from >3 his family. His grandfather’s activism and his fervent fight for equal rights not only for his family but for all black people, and the Hayden family’s place in society are sources of great personal pride.

With perseverance, power, and humility, Charlie Lee Hayden has picked up the baton and carried on the Hayden family name. If ever there is a person who is deserving of recognition and who has a story to tell, it is Charlie Lee Hayden, Purple Heart Recipient of the Vietnam War and a true pillar of the Goochland County community now and forever. We thank Charlie Lee Hayden for his sacrifice and his service.

This story was contributed by E. Steve Fleming.

Salary

continued from >1 much as $100,000 worth of training.

“It’s disheartening to see that talent that you worked so hard to foster and cultivate walk out the door,” said Ferguson, noting that filling the open positions has also been a challenge. Not only has the department, which historically staffs lean, lost five employees since July, but recent recruitment efforts have been drawing fewer qualified applicants than they did in the past.

Goochland leaders have certainly not ignored the public safety retention issue: On June 1, supervisors voted unanimously to amend the budget in order to provide all sworn officers in Goochland with a 12% pay increase, raising the starting salary for a Goochland County deputy to $53,066.

When it comes to Fire/ EMS, however, Ferguson cautioned board members that waiting much longer could have proven disastrous. Just one significant emergency — such as the Oct. 8 house fire on Dover Branch Lane that destroyed an 8,000-squarefoot home under construction — can tie up dozens of people, stretching resources dangerously thin.

“We know we are small, but the emergencies are the same,” Ferguson said, and increases in the county’s population are expected to exacerbate the issue.

After the vote, Ferguson thanked board members for taking the needed steps to help keep residents safe and noted that the move should help his department keep pace with the needs of a growing county.

“Everything around us has changed,” Ferguson said, “So we have to change.”
