Dover Baptist Church in Crozier burns down. In response, Goochland County Fire and Rescue decides to hold a fundraiser in order to purchase a new fire truck. The fundraiser is said to be the earliest “Goochland Day.”

Despite becoming a cherished local tradition, Goochland Day is held for the last time in the 20th century. Lack of volunteers and complaints about road closures and littering are said to be among the reasons the event is put on hold indefinitely.

After hearing from many residents that they wanted Goochland Day to return, Goochland High School PTSA officers Janet Neterer, Ledra Allen, Gina Saunders and Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda plan two festivals (May 5, 2018, and May 11, 2019) at Goochland High School.

The group forms the nonprofit Goochland Day Foundation in order to help further the mission of bringing a fullscale Goochland Day back to the county.

After being delayed a year due to COVID-19, the first Goochland Day and Parade in over two decades is held in the county on Sept. 25, 2021. The event is a resounding success, leading to plans for this year’s celebration as well as a goal to host a united celebration for Goochland’s Tricentennial Birthday in 2027.

School paving project begins By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Changes are afoot at the Goochland Middle School/ High School complex, as crews begin work to improve parking lots and bus lanes on the property. Phase I of the four-phase project will begin with grading the grassy area in the front of the property and relocating utilities. “We’re on a very tight timeline, and we needed to get started with site preparation before the end of this school year,” said Todd Steeley, director of maintenance and facilities for Goochland County Public Schools. “We must have this phase of the project completed by August 2022 to ensure that buses can use the redesigned bus loops at the beginning of the new school year.” The division will work closely with local contractor Crozier Construction Company LLC to limit the impact of starting the project while school is in session. see Paving > page 2

Paving continued from >1 “We anticipate that there will be some dust and noise as the project starts,” Steeley said. “But we all are focused on ensuring that teaching and learning continue at the schools without interruption.” Since the project will begin on the middle school side of the property, end-of-year testing during the first month of construction will result in modifications to the middle school schedule on May 13 and 20. Additionally, all noisy construction will pause during the school day on May 18 and May 25 since testing will be primar-

ily located in classrooms closest to the worksite. Middle school families will be directly notified of any schedule changes. With the start of the project, access to sections of sidewalks on the property will be affected; however, all sidewalks will be restored, and several sections will be improved as the project moves forward. Additionally, lighting in the front parking lot will be temporarily disconnected. The back parking lot will not be affected by the project and can be used for night events through the end of the school year. Graduation for the Goochland High School Class of 2022 will take place at Bulldog Stadium as scheduled.

Goochland Day officially began in the 1970s when Goochlanders Lois and Earl Henley and Eva and Howard Henley were inspired by a similar local celebration in Pendleton County, West Virginia. GEF’s 2022 gala raises over $54K Contributed report Over 160 people attended The Goochland Education Foundation’s (GEF) Annual Gala on March 11 at Dover Hall to celebrate the work of the GEF and raise funds to support the growing number of projects sponsored by the organization. Thanks to those in attendance and the 43 individuals and businesses that sponsored the event, the GEF can continue the work of providing innovative experiences inside and outside the classroom. The GEF is committed to ensuring Goochland County Public School students are prepared for the future. During the party, Renee Ferrell, school counselor, gave a compelling presentation about the many ways the schools are meeting the emotional and

behavioral health needs of the students and Randolph Elementary School teacher Kelly Taylor spoke enthusiastically about the reading initiative the GEF funded this year to address reading loss. These presentations were a reminder that the projects the GEF funds are important to giving students of all abilities an opportunity to find strengths they didn’t know they have. Cyndy Brown, executive director of the Goochland Education Foundation, says that she and the board of directors are very thankful to the community for supporting GEF’s mission. “Without this encouraging community support, we would not be able to do what we do for our children,” Brown said. “As we continue to offer a variety of programming that offers new ways to learn

and ensuring equity in education, we are taking a holistic approach of mind, body and spirit. It is critical as we recognize how the pandemic affected our children. We are amazed by the GCPS teachers and staff as they selflessly put their hearts, energy and resources into projects that go above and beyond the normal classroom curriculum, much of which is done on their own time. We want to do all we can to support them.” Brown said the 2023 event will be held on March 10 at Dover Hall. The Goochland Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing or expanding on innovative, visionary educational experiences designed to enrich and maximize the learning potential of Goochland County Public School students.

School division seeks to identify gifted CTE students Contributed report When you meet someone who is a master at business, someone who can whip up a delicious meal, or someone who can solve all of your electrical or plumbing problems, you might think they are gifted in their craft. When people think of gifted students, they often only think of students who are academically advanced. In Goochland, where the focus is helping every student reach their potential, gifted career and technical students will now be recognized and provided extra opportunities to develop their career skills. Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) recently opened teacher

referrals for a Career and Technical Aptitude (CTA) program to identify students who exhibit or show potential to exhibit high skill levels in the division’s Career and Technical Education programs. “I cannot express how exciting it was to submit the paperwork for one of my Marketing Education students, who is also very active in our school’s FFA program,” said Erin YearoutPatton, a teacher at Goochland High School. “This student organically sees the connection between the Marketing Education course and the outstanding work of our FFA program. It is powerful to see our students making

these connections and applying their knowledge and skillset to both.” The GCPS CTA program is open to students in grades seven through 12, with assessments and referrals starting as early as sixth grade. Beginning in sixth grade, students in GCPS have opportunities to explore different CTE courses through the STEAM Wheel. In this year-long class, students take four courses, one each marking period. Students who show potential can then be considered for the new CTA program. A student accepted into the CTA program will be provided enrichment activities and greater access to state

academies. The Hanover Regional Governor’s School for Career and Technical Advancement (HRGSCTA) is one example of a program that would be more available to a CTA participant. Easton Bowman, a student at GHS, attended HRGS-CTA in the summer of 2020. “To be one of four students from Goochland ever to be selected for Hanover Regional Governor’s School is a blessing in many ways,” Bowman said. “Before this experience, I had never had the opportunity to interact with students with similar goals from all over the state. Throughout the two weeks, my group designed a business

called Eco-Scapes. Our mission is to provide urban, residential and business areas with a greener, more ecofriendly experience by implementing personalized green spaces for consumers to detox and gather in a healthy manner. “We have amazing students who excel in academics, visual and performing arts, and CTE,” Beth Fowler, Ed.D., Coordinator of Advanced Programs and Equity, said. “All deserve to be celebrated and to hone their abilities, and we are proud to offer fertile soil for students identified as gifted in each area to grow to their full potential.”

H

ow many times have you heard someone say some version of this: “Someone really should create a _________).” Or, perhaps: “Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a _________?” Maybe even: “If there was a _______, I’d be the first one there.” For years, people in and around Goochland said exactly these kinds of things about reviving the beloved tradition of Goochland Day, an annual

event that brought everyone in town together to celebrate all things Goochland. But while many people agreed that it would be a wonderful idea, no one was quite able to commit to taking on the incredibly daunting task of pulling such an event together. That is, until somebody did. For Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda, there was never any question that bringing Goochland Day back to the county was a fantastic idea. And once she commits to things, it seems, Nelson-Lyda is a full-steamahead kind of person. On May 7, Goochland Day will once again take over the county’s Sports Complex, bringing with it a full day of entertainment suitable for all ages.

Nelson-Lyda will be the first to tell you that she didn’t move this mountain alone. In fact, providing the opportunity for all of Goochland to come and enjoy the festivities requires a small army of people, including many, many volunteers. It requires all of those people to commit many hours in support of the mission, knowing that something—and sometimes quite a few things—will go wrong along the way. Mostly, though, it takes a group of people who are willing to make the leap from “Wouldn’t it be nice?” to “We are going to make this happen.”

The mighty James River, more than 340 miles long, cuts through the heart of the state of Virginia and into the Chesapeake. If I was going to go all James Michener, I’d talk about the shifting of tectonic plates, rock formations, glaciers, floods and basically a dash course in earth science. Who hasn’t emerged from one of his voluminous tomes with a sense of satisfaction as if we’d actually created something? Well, fortunately, God is the master of such wonders as The James. Many great minds have been captured by this giant watery resource. George Washington was instrumental in creating a turning basin in the canal, steamboat engineers and makers of dams have used The James for purposes of transport, hydroelectricity and commerce. Towns and cities were built along its curves. Railroad companies such as CSX built along The James. Additionally, man has enjoyed The James for recreation. The Upper James is distinguished from the Lower James, which starts below the fall line. Many species of fish inhabit this river, including smallmouth bass, spotted and large mouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, along with sunfish species (redbreast, bluegill, and rock bass). Virginians and tourists enthusiastically partake in fishing, birdwatching, and all sorts of water sports from canoe-

James continued from >6 ing, sailing, tubing, pontoon boating, water skiing and motor- and speed boating each year. This story, which I had to get permission to tell, is about a couple we’ll call Bill and Louise, who attempted to celebrate a milestone in their marriage with a day of recreation on The James. Instead they learned a scary lesson about trying to tame it without proper preparation and knowledge of its nature, along with the bravery and common sense shown by some of the Virginians with proper respect for The James. On a particular Memorial Day about 24 years ago, Louise and Bill took their two children on the maiden voyage of their brand new Olde Town canoe, their 20th wedding anniversary present to each other. They put in at Pony Pastures in Richmond. If you’d been there that day, you would have seen the four of them in their bright, clean orange life vests— super small size for 3-year-old Andy, youth size for 12-year-old Amanda, and then the two adult-sized. Yes, they were wearing them. Loaded into the middle of the canoe was their large new red and white pristine cooler, filled with sandwiches, along with Fanta orange and grape drink cans. Their new dry bag held wallet and keys. What they hadn’t prepared for was the height of the water and the strong current on The James. Were there cautions published against swimming and boating on the river that day? Alas, their excitement about “doing this” overrode all their usual cautionary habits when trying something new. I am sure anyone watching them paddle out from the banks were concerned as they saw buxom Louise sitting on top of the cooler, while the current took the canoe out quickly away from the rocks of the shore. Minutes later, spectators had cause to act on their concern. Louise’s tall perch on the cooler added to the imbalance of the canoe as it started rocking. Amanda and her dad fought a doomed battle to gain control with their oars. Very quickly, the canoe capsized into the cold, swiftly moving water. The shock of being thrust into the low temperature of the river momentarily dulled Louise’s senses. Blinking, she counted her family—two life vested people bobbing in the white caps. But where was little Andy? With quick reflexes, Amanda dove under the bulky upturned green canoe, emerging with her baby brother. The teenage daughter’s common sense and decisive action may have saved his life. A shakened Louise

He swam toward one of the oars until he realized it was quickly being carried away too far from the canoe for him to fight his way upstream back to it. Louise watched the red cooler she had previously sat upon bounce along atop the rapidly moving current. By this time the people on the shore were waving their arms and shouting at the family in distress. With all the exertion and fight or flight adrenaline kicking in, Louise could feel herself getting tired of trying to hold onto the canoe. It was dragging them faster and further along. When they came to a shallow sand bar strewn with dead trees and branches, Bill made a decision. “Let go and grab onto a tree!” Louise let go of the canoe, and it was a relief—for a few minutes. Amanda and Bill grabbed the same tree. The canoe moved on, but was stalled by a huge uprooted tree ball not far away. The current began pulling forcefully at any foothold Louise felt, but she tried to burrow a foothold into the rocky sand and clutched Andy closer. Amanda, a strong swimmer, managed to hold on to her tree branch, but Louse could see she was shaking from the cold. Bill was talking them through, trying to keep them calm. All at once LouiseI felt every bit of strength ebb away. “I just want to let go and float,” she said, imagining pulling Andy on top of her and attempting a dead man’s float. “Don’t,” her husband said. “Someone’s coming,” he yelled, so she scanned the river and held on. She saw a man in a kayak paddling his way near them. “My name’s Steve,” he said. “Do you want help?” Bill spoke in a clear voice: “Yes!” Louise watched Steve and her husband exchange some words she couldn’t hear, but Bill relayed them to her. “He’s going to take the children to shore, then come back for us.” Relief flooded through Louise. Carefully Steve pulled petite but strong Amanda to him and she hoisted herself onto the front of the kayak as he deftly kept it from rolling over. Louise had recovered enough to help lift Andy up so his sister could hold onto him. Louise watched, saying a prayer of thanks to God for this rescuer named Steve. Someone on shore had called the fire department, who arrived and checked out the children for hypothermia. A woman who saw what happened and lived nearby had gone home for blankets. She returned, warmed up

her car and the children waited with her until the adults came ashore. Steve returned for Bill, leading him through the water to the now stationary canoe. They tied a rope to it, and slowly, Steve paddled and Bill kicked. They came close enough so Louise could join in the kicking, holding onto the fiberglass lip at the end of the canoe. Louise didn’t know how Steve maneuvered it, but they were no longer paddling upstream. When they got to shore, former spectators jumped into action. The fire department cautioned the couple about checking into conditions before launching again. Louise and Bill heeded their advice. Bill signed up for and completed water safety courses and obtained maps of the river for our future canoe trips. He learned to tie every kind of knot and gained all kinds of experience, which he broadened as he and Andy worked their way to Eagle Scout over the next 15 years. For several seasons after this first experience, the family put in near Cartersville, where the water was relatively shallow. Those trips were much less exciting but infinitely more pleasant. They could actually see the bottom of the river, it was so clear. As far as Steve, he would not accept any type of recognition. Louise made brownies and delivered them to his home. She wrote a letter to his place of employment, but he asked her not to send it. Steve exhibited all the characteristics of a hero—calm, capable, and unassuming. Whenever Louise recounts the story of that memorable day, she expresses thanks to God for Steve, the unsung hero of The James.

Tell Me a Story

Wild ride leads to memorable farm life tale Editor’s note: The following contribution is part of the Gazette’s continuing series “Tell Me a Story,” in which we ask our readers to share tales from their own lives or the lives of family members. By Jack Agnew Contributing Writer

This is another true account about Floyd Dodson Sr. He lived at the farm in a two-story tenant house that included a basement. He worked with my granddad on the dairy, and Floyd had asked if he could borrow Granddad’s racehorse “Dixie” to go get the cattle up from the low grounds when it was time to milk. He agreed, so they put a western saddle on her and Floyd rode Dixie about a half-mile down to where the cattle were grazing. Dixie wasn’t a real racehorse, just local races, but she could fly. Nobody realized this, but the children had just about ruined her. After going down to the low grounds with her, they would ride her back to the barn at full speed. It was great sport for them, and she had gotten used to the game. She also had a colt at the time, who followed her around. Floyd (who was 6’4”, 325 lbs.) got the cattle headed up to the barn and turned Dixie up toward the lane. She took off like a bolt of lightning, with Floyd hollering and holding on to the saddle horn with both hands. Floyd had a booming voice; the family joke was that whenever he milked and somebody told him a joke, the cows would lose 10% production because his laughter set their nerves on edge. He was shouting at the top of his lungs with both hands on the saddle horn, riding up the half-mile lane. Dixie was flying, with the colt running along beside her! There were three or four giant white oak trees in the middle of the 40-foot-wide lane. They were each about 4 or 5 feet in diameter; they were ancient. When the limbs of a white oak get that big and heavy, they tilt down toward the ground. The children had been running under them on the horse’s back with no problem, but Floyd was so big that when Dixie ran under the first tree, the fork of one of the sagging limbs

In The Garden

Want to show your support for Ukraine? Grow its national flower By Virginia McCown Contributing Writer

A

ncestors from the regions of Ukraine and South Russia brought both their culture as well as their memories to the United States during The Great Depression. Many memories were not good: “We used to call the seeds ‘Stalin chocolates,’ said Peter Janzen of Winnipeg, recalling how Mennonites in the Soviet Union in the early 1930s substituted the seeds for candy. “Some ate pressed cakes of sunflower seeds, processed by oil seed plants for livestock, when they didn’t have bread in the house.” Excerpt from Mennonite Foods & Folkways from South Russia by Norma Jost Voth

What can I do? Give financially but exercise caution in where you send your dollars! For instance, UNICEF and The International Committee of the Red Cross are two reputable organizations.

Grow sunflowers!

When we think of sunflowers, most of us think of the annual sunflower or Helianthus annuus, a native to North America. Annual sunflowers are some of the easiest plants to grow. Italian and Asian growers have introduced countless varieties, many used by florists such as Italian White, Autumn Beauty, Moulin Rouge, Teddy Bear, Cherry Rose and Hard times then...and hard times 90 years Lemon Éclair. The Sunbeam and Moonbright varieties send later. up a single stalk reaching about 6 feet in height.

The green-center and yellow petals of Sunbeam form heads about five inches in diameter. They make a cheery addition to blue larkspur or delphinium in arrangem e n t s . Moonbright has pale yellow petals and a brown center. It blends well with red and orange zinnias. Branching varieties include Lemon Queen with a height of about 7 feet. For a unique summer dish, the smaller green buds of branching varieties can be sautéed and served with a buttery sauce. Yet if you’re looking to grow the large heads loaded with edible seeds, the varieties to grow are the Russian-types such as Black Russian, Mammoth Russian, Giant Gray Stripe, Skyscraper, or the dwarf Sunspot. As a preschooler, I remember being given my very own share of a booming enterprise, the family’s suburban vegetable garden. I planted sunflowers. It was my first harvest…. and it was a bumper crop. Gardening had me—and so did sunflowers.

Cultivating annual sunflowers Sunflower seeds can be sowed directly into well-drained soil in areas of full sun after the last frost. They do best in a slightly acidic soil with a pH from 6.0 to 6.8. For both tall (7 to 10 feet tall) and smaller varieties (2-5 feet tall) plant seeds one inch deep and space a minimum of six inches apart. Next? Wait, watch and water. The Mammoth Russian variety will grow 8 to 12 feet tall and bear flowers 10 to 12 inches in diameter! The plants will bloom from mid-summer until frost. Mennonite farmers new to the U.S. usually planted a patch of sunflowers, according to Voth. When the seed heads had matured, the heads

were cut off and placed in the sun or on a roof top to dry. It was the children’s job to beat out the seeds. Then the seeds were placed in sacks and hung in the attic for storage. They were roasted as needed throughout the winter. “In the Ukraine the seeds were taken to a press where they were shelled, ground, heated and pressed for oil which later went to market,” wrote Voth.

How to toast sunflower seeds Sunflower heads are ready to harvest when the back of the head turns brown. When the seed heads are dry and the seeds are loose and ready to fall out, rub the heads over a basin or tub for seed collection. Recipe Cover the unshelled seeds with salted water, using ¼ cup of salt per two quarts of water. Soak the seeds in the solution overnight. Next morning, drain the water and pat the seeds dry to remove excess moisture. (You can roast the seeds unsalted: simply skip the overnight soaking) Spread the drained, patted dried seeds on a baking sheet and bake in a 275 to 300 F oven for one hour until golden brown. Stir occasionally. Test for doneness. The toasted seeds should open easily. After allowing the toasted seeds to cool, store in an airtight container. Suggested alternative: Leave the seed heads for the wild birds! Goldfinches are passionate for sunflower seeds.

Native sunflower varieties These are the perennial varieties and are not grown for edible seeds. Maximilian’s Sunflower Helianthus maximiliani, a native to Virginia, can grow three to 10 feet in height. It has two to four inch flower heads with yellow flowers. The stems are hairy and the leaves are grayish green and rough to the touch. A similar species, the Sawtooth Sunflower, Helianthus grosseserratus, has smooth-stems but has serrated leaves. Then there is Helianthus tuberosa. Thomas Jefferson listed the Jerusalem Artichoke as one of the edible plants in his Notes on the State of Virginia. He recorded planting them at Monticello in 1809. With a flower similar to Maximilian’s Sunflower, the Jerusalem artichoke became cultivated for its edible tuberous roots. “Sunchokes” are sometimes substituted for potatoes. In Chinese-style cooking, I’ve used them as a substitute for water chestnuts or bamboo shoots. Bulldogs win first games of the season By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

After an 0-6 start to the season, the Goochland boys soccer team has finally found itself in the win column. The Bulldogs played three games in four days last week, and played their best soccer of the season, dominating the Louisa County Lions and the Caroline County Cavaliers with 5-0 and 7-0 victories on April 25 and 29. Sandwiched between the two home wins was an 8-0 loss to the 8-0-2 Western Albemarle Warriors on April 28. “I was just so proud of the guys,” head coach Marshall Lindner said after the team’s win over the Lions. “They’ve been working hard and not coming away with the results, but it all came together.” A week prior to their first win of the season against Louisa County, Lindner credits a strong performance against the Orange County Hornets as a solid starting point to the team’s scoring momentum that they found in their two wins. that matchup 5-2 to the 5-2-1 Hornets that are fourth in the Jefferson District standings, goals by sophomore Duncan Pillion and junior Gintautas Putinas propelled the Bulldogs to even greater goal-scoring

heights. In their first win of the season against Louisa County, the Bulldogs were led by a brilliant hat trick performance from sophomore Yoshi DaSilva, who also added in another goal in the

Caroline victory to cap off an impressive week for him in front of the net. Joining DaSilva in the scoring column was team captain Drew Meiller and sophomore Anthony Esposito. Goalie

Braedon McKeown also finished with eight saves, including a few critical denials early in the first half that set the tone and allowed the Bulldogs to score first. McKeown’s rock solid goalkeeping was also aided in part by

a terrific defensive performance by the team, with Lindner crediting every player rotated in on the defensive end for a nearperfect performance. “Everybody, eight or nine guys with substitutes, played great games in front of our goalie Braedon,” he said. In the win against Caroline, McKeown recorded just four saves, as he was given far less to do with the defense stepping up even more to help him record his second clean sheet of the week. On the offensive end, the Bulldogs were as balanced as ever, with all seven goals coming from different players, including DaSilva and Meiller. Putinas also came off his Orange County finish with yet another goal to add to the offensive fireworks. Rounding out the goal scoring for the Bulldogs were goals from seniors Tristan Hyman and Luke Michaels, freshman Joe Hopler and junior Conner Doersch. The Bulldogs play again on Thursday, May 5, when they take on the 5-1-2 Charlottesville Black Knights.

Saint Gertrude softball beats Collegiate for second time By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

In their second matchup of the season, the Saint Gertrude Gators traveled to Collegiate’s home turf. After winning the first meeting 14-5 at home, the Gators came away victorious once again versus the Cougars, this time leaving with an 11-1 win. The Cougars defense did well in keeping it a low-scoring game in the early innings with the Gators leading 3-1 enter-

ing the top of the fourth, but the Gators exploded at-bat from then on, running off five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to close the game out early in five innings Saint Gertrude pitcher Sophia Covington threw for all five innings for the Gators, allowing just five hits and striking out four batters. The Cougars, meanwhile, saw appearances from Samantha Rao and Brennan Harbour on the mound, with Rao leading the charge with

three innings pitched. Both struck out two batters on the day. Leading the Gators at-bat was Leah Robinson, who had a team-high two hits on three atbats along with four RBIs. One of Robinson’s best plays of the day came at the top of the fifth inning, when she smashed a line drive to right field for a triple that scored in Smith and teammates Libby and Audrey Munro. The Gators also had threerun performances from Libby

Munro and Ann Marie Smith to round out a true all-around performance. Collegiate’s Ella Mcdaniel led the Cougars with two hits on two at-bats and the team’s lone run. Saint Gertrude plays again on Thursday, May 5, when they host Saint John Paul the Great at their Outdoor Athletic Center. Collegiate will also play on May 5 when they host St. Contributed Photo Catherine’s School at their The Saint Gertrude Gators huddle around their coaching staff Robins Campus for their senior after beating Collegiate in an 11-1 road victory on April 28. Collegiate girls soccer a little ahead of schedule By Tim Pearrell Richmond Times-Dispatch

With three freshmen starting this season, Collegiate girls soccer coach Rob Ukrop thought his team might be a year or two away. The Cougars, though, are 7-3-1, with victories over defending VISAA Division I state champ St. Catherine’s (4-0) and Trinity Episcopal (4-0, 1-0). While Collegiate has had the upper hand so far, Ukrop expects close battles in the LIS among Collegiate, St. Catherine’s and Trinity. “There’s a lot of parity,” he said. St. Catherine’s went unbeaten last season and beat Collegiate four times, includ-

ing 1-0 in the state final. St. Catherine’s has goalkeeper Talley Applewhite, the VISAA state player of the year. “Their goalkeeper is the best goalkeeper in the state, hands down,” Ukrop said. “She’s an incredible player. Our team created great chances, and Talley made three or four outstanding saves. We were happy to score. … Last year in two games we couldn’t score on them. It was a great team effort.” Freshman center forward Ryan Lewis scored all four goals against St. Catherine’s and had been piling up goals before suffering a season-ending knee injury last week against Trinity, Ukrop said. Collegiate lost 2-0 to Douglas Freeman (7-1-1)

on Wednesday, but Ukrop said Collegiate has been getting good play from senior defenders Keaton Rahman and Cassie Buxbaum, and freshmen attacking midfielders Gabriela Linkonis and Kate Smigelski. Ukrop moved Lewis from center midfield to center forward during a scrimmage to try to get some scoring help with a young club. Within a minute she scored. In eight games, Lewis had 15 goals and three assists. “She was scoring at an incredible clip,” Ukrop said. “It’s the old coach’s mantra: We don’t need anybody to be Ryan; we just need everybody to raise Shaban Athuman/Times-Dispatch their game 2%, 3%, see if they can make us a little stronger in Collegiate forward Presley Garst (6) celebrates her team’s goal against St. Catherine’s during a high school girls soccer game on Monday, April 18, 2022 at City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. that way.”

Goochland native wins Bass Nation of Virginia Youth Tourney By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

Goochland native and bass fisherman Ryan Lachniet has once again left the water a winner. On April 9, Lachniet won the top honor at the Bass Nation of Virginia Youth Tournament, pulling in 14.85 pounds and a big fish of 6.9 pounds on the Chickahominy River. Lachniet competed in a field of 53 boats during the tournament, and with his performance, added yet another victory to his prospering young fishing career. Lachniet, who is finishing up his dual enrollment with Liberty University this spring and will graduate with an Associate’s Degree in business, has committed to attending Campbellsville University in Kentucky on a fishing

scholarship this fall. He plans on majoring in the field of accounting. Lachniet has been a top fisher in Virginia for some time, recently being named a Virginia finalist in the Bassmaster All-American team of 12, while also participating in the 2022 Bass Nation of Virginia High School Championship from April 30-May 1 on Kerr Lake. “It’s been pretty awesome,” Lachniet told the Goochland Gazette last August. “It’s been a lot of work…I couldn’t even count the amount of days I’ve spent out there on the water, just trying to learn things. But it’s been worth it, 100 percent.” Lachniet was also recently announced as one of 53 anglers to be named to the Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team, being honored alongside Virginia anglers Shelby

Rigney of Axton and Logan Buttolph of Doswell. He also placed fourth in the Mossy Oak Bassmaster High School National Championship among 306 boats in a three-day tournament, and he won first place in the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Solo Tournament among 115 boats. Lachniet has also won multiple team-based competitions. Working with his partner Marshall Johnson, Lachniet also won the CATT Tournament, and he won the Pamunkey Mini Series on the Chickahominy River with his dad Philip Lachniet. He also won the Virginia High School North JSQ at Kerr Lake with his dad against 42 other boats. Goochland Day continued from >6 This is, of course, how all great things get done. Someone has to be able to look at a patch of overgrown weeds and see a skyscraper. Someone has to be able to see a cure when all anyone else sees is a disease. And someone has to be able to see a path to “yes” when all anyone else sees is a thousand obstacles in the way. This Saturday, as residents enjoy the much-anticipated Goochland Day parade through the courthouse, dance to a fantastic band playing

on the festival’s main stage or enjoy a treat from one of the many Goochland Day vendors, I doubt they will be thinking of the countless hours that went into planning the event or how much of themselves each and every volunteer put into making it a success. What I am sure of, however, is that the county is fortunate to have people who commit themselves to fostering a sense of community and celebrating all the things that make Goochland such a special place. Because they rolled up their sleeves, we all get to share in the fun.

Ride continued from >7 caught him in the neck. He was so strong and powerful, and had such a death grip on the saddle horn, that he broke the girth and the belly strap of the saddle as Dixie ran out from under him. With Floyd’s weight hitting it and the shock of the blow, the limb broke and he hit the ground still in the saddle, feet still in the stirrups, still roaring at the top of his lungs. He never stopped yelling, even with the limb wrapped around his neck, and he was

still holding on to the saddle horn. The barn crew had heard him hollering, so they had gone to the back door of the barn and saw the whole thing. They ran down to Floyd thinking that he was going to die, but he was still shouting, and he was fine. It would have killed a normal man, but Floyd never even went to the doctor. I can’t imagine anyone on the planet being able to break a western saddle’s girth. It’s basically impossible, but Floyd did it. One cute part of the story

Since 1955

was that in the commotion of the limb breaking and the noise and everything, the colt running beside Dixie kicked his feet up in the air and had a large explosion of wind. The barn crew took great advantage of this once they found out that Floyd was okay. For the rest of his life, they would tease him about it, saying, “It wasn’t the colt that made that noise, it was you when you hit that limb!” Do you have a story you’d like to share with Goochland Gazette readers? Send it to rryan@goochlandgazette. com, or call (804) 339-7956.

PUBLIC NOTICE FEMA-4644-DR-VA

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hereby gives notice to the public of its intent to reimburse eligible applicants for eligible costs to repair and/or replace facilities damaged by a severe winter storm (FEMA-4644-DR-VA) occurring from January 2 to January 3, 2022. This notice applies to the Public Assistance (PA) and Hazard Mitigation Grant (HMGP) programs implemented under the authority of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 5121-5206. Under a major disaster declaration (FEMA-4644-DR-VA) signed by the President on March 11, 2022, the following areas of the Commonwealth of Virginia are eligible for PA only: Albemarle, Amelia, Appomattox, Bedford, Buckingham, Caroline, Charlotte, Culpeper, Cumberland, Essex, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Hanover, King George, King William, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Rappahannock, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland Counties and the independent City of Fredericksburg. Additional areas may be designated at a later date. All areas in the Commonwealth of Virginia are eligible for HMGP. This public notice concerns activities that may affect historic properties, activities that are located in or affect wetland areas or the 100-year floodplain, and critical actions within the 500-year floodplain. Such activities may adversely affect the historic property, floodplain or wetland, or may result in continuing vulnerability to flood damage. Presidential Executive Orders 11988 and 11990 require that all federal actions in or affecting the floodplain or wetlands be reviewed for opportunities to relocate, and evaluated for social, economic, historical, environmental, legal and safety considerations. Where there is no opportunity to relocate, FEMA is required to undertake a detailed review to determine what measures can be taken to minimize future damages. The public is invited to participate in the process of identifying alternatives and analyzing their impacts. FEMA has determined that for certain types of facilities there are normally no alternatives to restoration in the floodplain/wetland. These are facilities that meet all of the following criteria: 1) FEMA’s estimate of the cost of repairs is less than 50% of the cost to replace the entire facility, and is less than $100,000; 2) the facility is not located in a floodway; 3) the facility has not sustained major structural damage in a previous Presidentially declared flooding disaster or emergency; and 4) the facility is not critical (e.g., the facility is not a hospital, generating plant, emergency operations center, or a facility that contains dangerous materials). FEMA intends to provide assistance for the restoration of these facilities to their pre-disaster condition, except that certain measures to mitigate the effects of future flooding or other hazards may be included in the work. For example, a bridge or culvert restoration may include a larger waterway opening to decrease the risk of future washouts. For routine activities, this will be the only public notice provided. Other activities and those involving facilities that do not meet the four criteria are required to undergo more detailed review, including study of alternate locations. Subsequent public notices regarding such projects will be published if necessary, as more specific information becomes available. In many cases, an applicant may have started facility restoration before federal involvement. Even if the facility must undergo detailed review and analysis of alternate locations, FEMA will fund eligible restoration at the original location if the facility is functionally dependent on its floodplain location (e.g., bridges and flood control facilities), or the project facilitates an open space use, or the facility is an integral part of a larger network that is impractical or uneconomical to relocate, such as a road. In such cases, FEMA must also examine the possible effects of not restoring the facility, minimize floodplain/wetland impacts, and determine both that an overriding public need for the facility clearly outweighs the Executive Order requirements to avoid the floodplain/wetland, and that the site is the only practicable alternative. Commonwealth of Virginia and local officials will confirm to FEMA that proposed actions comply with all applicable State and local floodplain management and wetland protection requirements. Presidential Executive Order 12898, Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Populations, directs each federal agency to avoid disproportionate and high adverse human health or environmental effects to low-income and minority populations. FEMA aims to identify low income and minority communities at the onset of a declared event to gain better understanding of how response and recovery efforts, including mitigation may impact such groups and communities. Additionally, once low income and minority communities have been identified, FEMA aims to minimize any potential adverse impacts to those communities through encouraging alternative selection of response and recovery actions including HMGP projects. FEMA also intends to provide HMGP funding to the Commonwealth of Virginia to mitigate future disaster damages. These projects may include construction of new facilities, modification of existing, undamaged facilities, relocation of facilities out of floodplains, demolition of structures, or other types of projects to mitigate future disaster damages. In the course of developing project proposals, subsequent public notices will be published if necessary, as more specific information becomes available.

The National Historic Preservation Act requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of their undertakings on historic properties. Those actions or activities affecting buildings, structures, districts or objects 50 years or older or that affect archaeological sites or undisturbed ground will require further review to determine if the property is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (Register). If the property is determined to be eligible for the Register, and FEMA’s undertaking will adversely affect it, FEMA will provide additional public notices. For historic properties not adversely affected by FEMA’s undertaking, this will be the only public notice. As noted, this may be the only public notice regarding the above-described actions under the PA and HMGP programs. Interested persons may obtain information about these actions or a specific project by writing to the Federal Emergency Management Agency via email: FEMA-R3-EHP-PublicComment@fema.dhs.gov. Comments should be addressed in writing to Gerard Stolar, Federal Coordinating Officer, at the above email address within 15 days of the date of this notice.
