Dover Baptist Church in Crozier burns down. In response, Goochland County Fire and Rescue decides to hold a fundraiser in order to purchase a new fire truck. The fundraiser is said to be the earliest “Goochland Day.”
Despite becoming a cherished local tradition, Goochland Day is held for the last time in the 20th century. Lack of volunteers and complaints about road closures and littering are said to be among the reasons the event is put on hold indefinitely.
After hearing from many residents that they wanted Goochland Day to return, Goochland High School PTSA officers Janet Neterer, Ledra Allen, Gina Saunders and Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda plan two festivals (May 5, 2018, and May 11, 2019) at Goochland High School.
The group forms the nonprofit Goochland Day Foundation in order to help further the mission of bringing a fullscale Goochland Day back to the county.
After being delayed a year due to COVID-19, the first Goochland Day and Parade in over two decades is held in the county on Sept. 25, 2021. The event is a resounding success, leading to plans for this year’s celebration as well as a goal to host a united celebration for Goochland’s Tricentennial Birthday in 2027.
School paving project begins By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Changes are afoot at the Goochland Middle School/ High School complex, as crews begin work to improve parking lots and bus lanes on the property. Phase I of the four-phase project will begin with grading the grassy area in the front of the property and relocating utilities. “We’re on a very tight timeline, and we needed to get started with site preparation before the end of this school year,” said Todd Steeley, director of maintenance and facilities for Goochland County Public Schools. “We must have this phase of the project completed by August 2022 to ensure that buses can use the redesigned bus loops at the beginning of the new school year.” The division will work closely with local contractor Crozier Construction Company LLC to limit the impact of starting the project while school is in session. see Paving > page 2
