Tomlin named GCPS Teacher of the Year By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Those who work alongside Byrd Elementary School teacher Michael Tomlin already know how much he brings to his role each and every day. This year, however, they wanted to make sure everyone knew it. Tomlin, a third-grade teacher at

Byrd, was named the Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) Teacher of the Year at the division’s Celebration of Excellence on May 4. To Byrd Elementary principal James Hopkins, the honor was welldeserved. “He works hard to encourage and support students academically, socially and emotionally,” Hopkins said. “He

is always professional in his interactions with students, families and peers; his students love him because of his sense of humor, and they know that he genuinely cares about them.” Teachers of the Year are nominated by their peers, and Tomlin’s fellow teachers noted during the nominasee Tomlin > 3

After a nine-month search, the Goochland County Board of Supervisors announced on May 3 that Victor J. “Vic” Carpenter has been hired to serve as Goochland’s new county administrator. Carpenter, who is currently serving as the county administrator for South Carolina’s Kershaw County, will assume his new role effective June 20, 2022. He will succeed Manuel “Manny” Alvarez Jr. who has served as interim county administrator since August 2021. Alvarez was appointed to the position following the departure of Kenny Young, who resigned last July less than a year after being hired. CARPENTER “Vic’s leadership and expertise will be a tremendous asset as Goochland moves forward implementing the Village Plans, constructing a new courthouse and fire stations, and dealing with growth challenges,” said board of supervisors chair Neil Spoonhower. Carpenter continued from >1 mous. Carpenter brings more than 25 years of local government experience and has served as president of the South Carolina Managers, Administrators and Supervisors Association. He has also been actively involved in his community through Rotary International, Kiwanis and as president of the Boys and Girls Club. Reached by phone on Monday, Carpenter said he is excited to begin his tenure in Goochland and looks forward to working with county leaders. “I’m very excited to get started, and I appreciate that the board saw fit to put their faith in me,” said Carpenter, who began his career with the Boy Scouts of America orga-

nization before transitioning to local government. Carpenter’s accomplishments in his current role include leading his county to receive the All-America City Award, overseeing the construction of numerous buildings and managing record fund balances. Throughout the course of his career, which has taken him from urban counties along the I-85 corridor to small rural counties, Carpenter has earned endorsements from groups such as the NAACP and the American Legion, and his legacy of community improvements range from new Humane Society animal shelters to new Ffrmers markets. He has also overseen construction of library buildings, upgrades to county courthouses, educational facilities, recreational complexes and public works facilities.

Have you heard we have a Benny? The Benny is a very unique, very special collector’s item. He may or may not be a Mountain Cur. He is house trained, walks well on leash, and does good with bigger people and cats. The Benny is renowned for his skills in receiving belly rubs, playing fetch, and chasing squirrels. The Benny is also a world class snuggler. A few key notes to remember if you plan on someday adopting The Benny. He dislikes vacuum cleaners, car rides are not his favorite, and he is protective of his family. The Benny will place best in a home with adults, older kids or a dog savvy person/family. A fenced yard would be ideal for The Benny. The Benny comes complete with his stuffed Lambchop toy, a neuter, a microchip, and all his vetting. The Benny is about 1-2 years old and about 30 pounds. Going for broke: Life of an artist is often challenging announcement from a criticallyacclaimed group that will be performing at Goochland’s Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery on Friday, June 10, is a charming reminder of the latter. Ask me if I tend to be drawn to artists and I will tell you that this is true, and in fact has always been true for as long as I can remember. But ask me to define what an artist is, and I might have a little more trouble with that one. I suppose, at the end of the day, I would say that an artist is a person who does what they do not because it is necessary to live but because it is the only way they can imagine living. Please do not misunderstand me: I have nothing against becoming a chemical engineer or a corporate tax accountant, and I am certain that many people in those fields enjoy their work. But I would be willing to wager that a far higher

“June Star was formed in 1998 by singer/songwriter Andrew Grimm. Since then, they have put out 16 records, toured a good bit of the U.S., and have gone into debt.” Having worked in journalism for the better part of 20 years, I’ve had the great fortune to interview quite a few artists of just about every stripe. Among them have been musicians, writers, painters, sculptors and even a few who specialized in creating works of art from whatever scrap pieces of material happened to been lying around. Some of them had found a way to make a nice living from their work, but many have chosen to forgo certain material comforts in order to pursue their passion. The excerpt above, taken from a press

percentage of stained-glass artists, poets and banjo-pickers do what they do because they cannot imagine not doing it. Simply put, it is in them—it is literally who they are. I will tell you that just about every creative person I have ever interviewed has been unfailingly humble and kind, and I’ve wondered over the years if that gentle way of moving through the world has almost everything to do with the fact that an artistic gift is often seen as just that—a gift. Becoming a good painter, songwriter or actor, after all, takes a tremendous amount of hard work and determination. But being a gifted one? Well that wouldn’t seem to be possible without a little divine intervention. Finally, it has been my experience that so many artists are in their chosen field because they decidedto follow their hearts even when it wasn’t the safest, or most finan-

cially prudent, decision. That makes them a commendably brave lot, and a wonderful example of believing in one’s own ability. No path to artistic success will ever be without missteps and heartbreaks—and the financial rewards are certainly not guaranteed—yet they push on anyway. For all of the hardworking, creative people of all ages out there this week working into the small hours of the morning on a new piece of music, hunched over a sewing machine, chipping away slowly at a piece of rock or engaged in any other endeavor that requires you to believe that your efforts could eventually yield magic, I applaud your efforts and remain inspired by your passion. What you produce may not be necessary to live, but it makes the lives we all lead profoundly more rich.

The particulars of those occasions are lost in the sunsets of our lives, but one of our escapades managed to withstand the rigors of passing years. The reason it stands out is that my quiet unassuming proper sister and I sort of caused a scene in a department store.

It began when we walked into a display of hats. Years ago, hats were more popular and plentiful than now, and the stylish accessories, poised in artful form on stands, begged our attention. There see Hats > 13

Afternoon spent in search of ‘pink lady’ pays off By Laura McFarland Managing Editor

As treasure hunts go, this was one of the more unusual ones in which I have ever participated. In general, I like a good treasure hunt, though we are not talking about the kind One-Eyed Willy was protecting. Whether it is finding good books at a library book sale, stumbling across a beautiful piece of artwork in a garage sale, or discovering a beautiful piece of clothing in a thrift store with the original tags still on, a huge part of the fun is the thrill of the hunt. Sure you want the treasure, but if you are having a good time along the way, sometimes walking away empty-handed isn’t a horrible outcome. That was certainly true of the search for lady slipper orchids that occurred last week in some local woods. It started with a name. For those of you who don’t know, I participate every year in the James River Batteau Festival, an eight-day boat festival that sees colonial-style flat-bottom boats floating from Lynchburg to Powhatan with stops along the way. The name of the boat on which I am a crew member is the Lady’s Slipper, which was inspired by lady slipper orchids. The boat even has a sail with the flower painted on it that we unfurl when we want to move a little faster down the James River. So when a friend mentioned a section of woods that is known for having great specimens of pink lady, I was intrigued. That is how I found myself one see Lady Slipper > page 12

Funkhouser, Bulldogs record first win By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

It has not been an easy year for the Goochland girls soccer team. Facing a daunting new Jefferson District schedule, dealing with multiple injuries to key players and battling through a nine-game losing streak could break just about any group. This team; however, is different. Despite consistently beating opponents with relative ease in previous seasons, first-year head coach Jason Funkhouser and his team consisting of six seniors and 13 underclassmen have used every loss as a learning experience, with all that accumulating in the team’s first win of the season in their 10th game against Caroline County on April 29. “We’re just trying to tell them to do the little things right, and find the things that matter because the little details matter,” Funkhouser said. Focusing on the smaller details to the game proved

vital in that first win. Coming into the game, the team had struggled finding success on the attack against a rogues’ gallery of Jefferson foes, but against

Caroline, the Bulldogs found the back of the net four times with three different players getting on the scoresheet while the defense held Caroline in check

for their first clean sheet of the season. The goals came from Erla Thorkelsdottir, Allie Joyner and Ella Kamencik, all three of

whom are senior leaders that have helped guide the younger players through this season. Fellow senior Bridget Dinora says the win proved to be an energizing experience for all involved. “It was very uplifting,” Dinora said. “We were all so happy to get a win because it’s been very hard since this is such a new team. Winning this game I think brought a lot of positive energy to our team and a lot of hope for more games to come.” Even before the win, this group of seniors have stressed the importance of coming away from their losses with something positive to the rest of the roster, ensuring the group stayed motivated even as losses began piling up. “Once you turn on each other that really has a bad effect on the field, so just staying as a team and working together was mainly what we were trying to focus on,” Dinora said. Though Funkhouser’s been around the program for six years — first as a volunteer assistant coach and eventually the junior varsity head coach — he’s faced new challenges in his

own right with the new varsity coaching position. Beyond the new competition has been multiple injuries to key players, oftentimes forcing him to work with either a limited bench or a bench filled with junior varsity up-andcomers still figuring out the speed of the game. Entering the final stretch of three regular season games, the Bulldogs currently have six players from the original roster out with some form of ailment. Through it all though, Funkhouser and his team seem ready to handle any modicum of adversity thrown their way. “You grow from it, you learn from it and you get better,” he said. As the season nears its close, the general focus for the senior class is centered on enjoying every moment on the field together while also setting a strong example for the rising upperclassmen that will form the foundation for next year’s team and beyond. “We’re all just trying to enjoy the experience because we’ve been playing together for so long,” Dinora said.

Collegiate softball pulls away late against St. Catherine’s By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

Down 5-1 heading into the fifth, the Collegiate Cougars offense began to find its stride. With three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth, the Cougars stole the lead from St. Catherine’s School as they pulled out a dramatic 9-5 win. Both teams had pitchers go the distance during the game, with Brennan Harbour leading Collegiate on the mound and

Oakley Cotropia leading St. Catherine’s. In the first inning, St. Catherine’s got off to a strong start with a 2-0 lead thanks to Brianna Henry scoring on a passed ball and Dresden Mattingly reaching home off a fly ball error. They then added two more in the next inning to make it 4-0 off of a Henry fly ball triple and a Mattingly RBI single. The Cougars finally got on the board in the third to cut the deficit down to three thanks to

an impressive sequence from Harper Murphy, who hit a ground ball single then proceeded to steal both second and third before reaching home on an error. St. Catherine’s added one more run to make it 5-1, which led directly to the big Collegiate comeback. Runs from Mary Ann Zyglocke off a walk and Lily Hartley off a Murphy RBI single made it 5-4 at the bottom of the fifth, and then the Cougars added five runs on five at-bats at the bottom of the

sixth to cement the lead. Starting off the five-run sixth was a run from junior Annabel Eastep off a fly out after she tagged up and ran for home. Then, junior Jordan Gross scored in off a RBI single from Maria Bonwell before a Hartley sacrifice bunt got Grace Hugo to home base. Hester leads Collegiate lacrosse past Douglas Freeman By Zach Joachim Richmond Times-Dispatch

Collegiate girls lacrosse senior attacker Reynolds Hester possessed the ball below the goal on the right side during the first half of the Cougars’ matchup with Douglas Freeman on Wednesday night. Junior attacker Claiborne Dillard set an off-ball pick to free up senior midfielder Amani Kimball-McKavish. Hester fed KimballMcKavish, who did a high fake and ducked below the keeper to score and put her Cougars up 6-2 in the waning moments of the first half. Visiting Collegiate was at that point in control of what turned out to be an 11-4 victory for the LIS champs and VISAA runners-up over the reigning Class 5 champions in a marquee local girls lacrosse showdown. Cougars coach Christina Dobson said her team has been working on foundational defense, and that renewed commitment showed against one of the area’s strongest attacking sides. “They have some very strong attackers, so just doing

foundational good defense, quick slides, sending doubles early and taking care of the ball was a theme for us,” Dobson said. Hester scored a game-high four goals and dished out two assists. Kimball-McKavish scored twice, and Freeman junior midfielder Ella Davis netted a pair of goals to pace the Mavericks. Dobson said Hester and Kimball-McKavish have “stepped up in terms of leadership.” Both seniors said sticking to their defensive game plan was vital facing Freeman’s talented attackers. “Our game plan was just make contact early, send the second slide, make sure we held them and forced them out,” Kimball-McKavish said. The physicality of the match didn’t deter the Cougars defensively, Hester added. “We had a lot of yellow cards, and I think we did a good job of staying in it a man down despite the yellow cards,” Hester said. “So I was really proud of everyone.” Both Kimball-McKavish and Hester lauded the play of junior keeper Avery Greenberg,

saying she was key in limiting Freeman’s offense. Greenberg recovered from a concussion earlier in the season to return to play. “Avery stepped up huge,” Dobson said. “It’s been great to see her get back into it and gain confidence.” Dobson highlighted the play

of senior defender Ellie Smith, and Hester said the Cougars “have a lot of freshmen that have really stepped up this season,” including Celie Shield and Betsy Clarke, both of whom scored Wednesday. “They’ve gotten a lot of minutes and have made their mark on the team with a lot of confi-

dence,” Hester said. “I feel like we have a good future.” The game preceded a boys matchup between the same schools, part of the sixth annual memorial lacrosse games to benefit The Frankie Woolwine Story, an initiative honoring a Freeman student and lacrosse player who was killed in a single

car accident in August of 2016 at 16 years old. The Frankie Challenge, according to its website, “exists to urge students to stop and think about the grave consequences of driving under the influence.” Mavericks coach Christina D’Angelo praised Davis and East Carolina recruit Grace Moore, a junior midfielder who had five draw controls. Senior midfielder and captain Lucy Larkin had a standout goal on a long run from midfield and controlled five ground balls. And junior keeper Zara Issak had 10 saves. D’Angelo and Dobson are friends, and the former said their programs look forward to playing the matchup every year to support the cause in honor of Woolwine. “It’s a cool time in the season to have a VISAA team play a VHSL team. We look at it like it’s in honor of a cause bigger than ourselves,” D’Angelo said. “So many of the girls are friends in the community. It just feels like a great time to take a breath in May and think about a bigger picture here and play for something that’s important.”

Collegiate girls soccer wins in rainy battle versus Cape Henry By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

While it was difficult to enjoy their senior night thanks to the nonstop rainy conditions, the Collegiate Cougars girls soccer team got through most of the game before the weather forced an early finish, pulling away with a 2-1 victory over Cape Henry. The Cougars (10-4-1) won their third game in four

days with the win over the Dolphins as they get set to head into the LIS playoffs. Seniors Amanda Tan, Kate Riopelle, Keaton Rahman, Stella Smigelski and Cassie Buxbaum were the celebrated 12th-grade athletes for the Cougars at their field at Robins Campus. Despite the harsh weather and resulting field conditions, the Cougars still found ways to get the ball into the back

of the net, with sophomore Claire Curtis opening up the scoring for the team in the first half, though the Dolphins were able to head into the break with a goal from senior Lauren Kenison to make it a 1-1 game. In the second half, defender Rahman capped off an impressive senior campaign by putting the Cougars ahead with her fifth goal of the season as the team hung onto

the lead before the game was called off early. With a bye week for the LIS quarterfinals, the Cougars will hope to use the extra day of rest to get to the LIS championship game on Thursday, May 12. The VISAA quarterfinals will then start on Tuesday, May 17. Signing Day: Goochland football players pick their schools By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

On May 4, Goochland took the time to celebrate two of their top senior football athletes in De’Andre Robinson and Omarion Quarles, who signed their letters of intent as they move onto to the next steps in their football careers. Robinson, a defensive lineman and tight end for the Bulldogs, will be attending Virginia Military Institute while his teammate Quarles will be attending Christopher Newport University. Quarles played running back and defensive back for the Bulldogs. Joined by their family and friends, the two multisport athletes that played both football and basketball together for the Bulldogs donned their new schools’ colors in an afternoon ceremony held at the school. The two seniors were vital to the team’s success throughout the season, with Goochland finishing with a 6-6 record and a regional playoff appearance that ended Contributed photos with a 40-21 loss to Meridian High School on Nov. 19, Left, De’Andre Robinson (left) and Omarion Quarles pose together after their signing day. Woodson, Daughtry named to All-Metro First Teams Staff Report

After a successful VISAA season for both the Saint Gertrude Gators and the Benedictine Cadets, a handful of their star players are still bringing in accolades. Announced on May 7-8, the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s 2022 All-Metro basketball teams featured two Gators and Cadets out of 34 athletes, with Saint Gertrude junior Erin Woodson and Benedictine senior Jaden Daughtry being named to the first team. Cadets guard Davin Cosby and Gators forward Kate Samson were featured on the All-Metro third team as well. This is Daughtry’s second appearance on the All-Metro team after making it last year when he was with the L.C. Bird Skyhawks, where he was named the Region 5B player of the year.

This year, Daughtry was one of Benedictine’s leading scorers next to Cosby, averaging 23.2 points en route to 1,000 career points. In just a single season, Daughtry left a mark on Benedictine with multiple bigtime performances in the score column, including five games with 30 points or more at the VISAA Division I level. Due to his efforts, Daughtry was named a first-team all-state selection as well. Standing at 6 feet tall, Woodson’s junior season was one for the books, with the standout guard doing a little bit of everything for the Gators. As one of the focal points on both sides of the floor, Woodson finished her season with averages of 21.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.7 steals. She improved across the board from her sophomore season, where she averaged 17.3 points,

6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.4 steals. She also shot an efficient 45% from the floor this year and 51% on two-point attempts in a season that saw Saint Gertrude finish with a 22-7 record. Like Daughtry, she also eclipsed

over 1,000 career points and was a VISAA Division I all-state selection. Woodson has committed to Purdue Fort Wayne. Samson, a four-year varsity standout, also had an excellent year, averaging 12.8 points,

8.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 3 blocks. She will be attending the United States Naval Academy next year. Cosby led the Cadets in scoring this season alongside Daughtry, averaging 23.6 points

per game and scoring 613 points over the course of the season. He is currently ranked as the eighth-best shooting guard in the state of Virginia for the 2023 graduating class, according to 247Sports.

Lady Slipper continued from >6 day last week after school taking a walk with my neighbor Katrina on a hunt for lady slippers. She is training to be a Master Gardener and acted as the tour guide for the search. The trip was not wasted. Sprinkled in ones, twos and whole groups, the bright pink of the lady slippers stood out distinctly in the browns and greens of the surrounding forest. Even having seen them on numerous occasions, the puffy pink labellum (slipper-shaped

part) combined with the dorsal septal stretching up and out still makes the flower look like a beautiful alien with attitude. Above I mentioned walking away empty-handed from this excursion, which is technically true. Katrina said it can be a problem sometimes when people come across the flowers and pick them, and I had no desire to add to that problem. But while it was never an option that any of the flowers we found would be coming home with us, let’s just say it’s a good thing digital photos don’t weigh anything, because my phone was decidedly more

weighed down than at the start of the trip. The afternoon sunlight peeking through the trees and illuminating the flowers warranted photos, as did the discovery of single flowers, cute pairs growing side by side, large clusters, side views and closeups. I have never aspired to be a paparazzo, but the way we were acting between the excessive amount of photos and the gushing each time we came across particularly beautiful specimens, you would think a celebrity had come to town. The residual giddiness from the excursion – it sounds

what kind of blooms to expect with these various flowers, I have a beautiful growing season ahead. And each time I see it, it brings a smile to my face as I think of my friend, who is gone but definitely not forgotten. Thinking back at how the joy in the new spring blooms combined with the emotional attachments connecting the flowers to people and things that are important to me, I can say again, I definitely didn’t walk away empty handed. We were back in treasurer hunt mode, peeking around the already large blooms to find the little surprises underneath, like dill and clover. Based on the photos of

Students mark Arbor Day with Project Plant It! event Contributed report

Third-grade students from all three Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) gathered at Byrd Elementary to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 29. The 175 students were enrolled in Dominion Energy’s environmental education program, Project Plant It!, which gives each participating student a free tree seedling and a free packet of wildflower seeds to attract bees and other pollinators.

Hats continued from >6 were big fluffy hats, little dainty hats, hats with oversized bows and colorful plumes, hats you might consider wearing and some you never would, some clownish and comedic. Neither of us needed a hat and had no intentions of buying one, but we could not resist the urge. One of us, I don’t know who, picked up a hat and tried it on. The other one giggled and that is when silliness took off like a jet plane headed for Disney World. An innocent gesture soon turned into a competition of searching for the most ridiculous hat and modeling it, to see which one of us could look more ridiculous. Chuckles soon turned into cackles as we took turns posing then breaking into tear-filled laughter. Our funny bones had clearly been tickled. Swapping hats back and forth, we laughed out loud, doubled over, and for a few minutes, forgot the traumas of our childhoods and the worries of tomorrow, as well as our surroundings. If other shoppers happened to be in close proximity, we were unaware but having the time of our

This was the 14th consecutive year that GCPS has enrolled all third-grade students into Project Plant It! During the two-hour event, the students rotated around five learning centers designed to teach them about the benefits of trees and pollinators to the ecosystem. Dominion Energy established Project Plant It! in 2007, making Spring 2022 the 16th implementation of this award-winning program. lives — until. In the middle of one of our heartiest bursts of laughter, I saw in my peripheral vision a matronly woman marching soldier-like and briskly toward us. She approached, stopped on a dime, and spewed out a stern reprimand for our misuse of the millinery. We were stunned by her remark but like obedient school girls responded kindly. The woman then pivoted and darted back to her post, satisfied that she had put an end to our spontaneous fit of gaiety. With residual grins on our faces, we put the hats back in place and moved on. Reprimand aside, we, too, walked away in satisfaction, for like a favorite song transports its listener to the peacefulness of heaven, we had been carried by laughter to one of the happiest places we had ever been. The cantankerous warden at the department store might have thrown cold water on our fun, but she did not dampen our spirits. Our laughter, way back then as well as now in reminiscence, is much louder than the woman’s rebuke could ever be. Do you have a story you would like to share? Every gardener knows that the success of their garden begins at the roots. Plant roots need to be drawing the right mix of nutrients and moisture from the soil to fuel successful plant growth. While understanding the specific chemical makeup of healthy soil may be a more recent discovery, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both knew enough to write to their farm managers instructing them to feed their farm’s soil with “well-rotted manure.” Two hundred years later, many soil scientists may give similar advice with a few adjustments based on modern research. So what makes up healthy soil? Basic soil biology dictates that healthy soil has a living “soil food web.” This is a term coined by Dr. Elaine Ingham to refer to the relationships among the wide range of organisms living all or part of their time in the soil. It turns out that soil is a complex ecosystem of many types of organisms that interact. The types of interactions are pretty diverse, but ultimately add up to a soil lifecycle. Some of the steps in the cycle include: Plants convert carbon dioxide from the air into carbohydrates via photosynthesis. The carbohydrates are broken down by plants and soil organisms for energy. Residues from these organisms (dead cells, excrement, etc.) add organic matter to the soil. Other soil organisms break down the organic matter to create new compounds that are used for energy and

nutrients. The decomposition process continues until the nutrients are used up and what remains is a relatively inert material called humus that helps aggregate soil particles which in turn improves soil aeration, water holding capacity, and drainage. Clearly, these tiny microorganisms in the soil are critical to soil health. Therefore, the gardeners’ goal should be to help create an environment where these organisms thrive. In order to put out the welcome mat for these microscopic soil super heroes, keep in mind three simple principles. First, disturb the soil as little as possible. Use no-till or low till methods if at all possible. And, if the soil is very compacted or devoid of organic matter, till only once and then return to no till methods in future years. The goal is to avoid disrupting the community of soil organisms. Tilling also introduces excess oxygen into the soil, which speeds up the decomposition of organic matter and leads to nutrient depletion. When soil is tilled, it actually reduces the fertility of the soil and no gardener wants that to happen. Second, avoid soil compaction. When a soil is compacted is contains less oxygen and that makes it harder for the soil organisms to survive. Compaction also damages soil structure which means that water holding capacity can be reduced. And perhaps most disastrous of all is the reduction of root development as the roots of most plants have trouble penetrating compacted soil.

Simple actions like using pathways rather than stepping in beds and avoiding working the soil when it’s wet will help avoid compaction issues. Treat your soil like you would a cake you had just baked and ensure that no heavy items are placed on top of it. Third, use organic amendments. Recent research has shown that using synthetic fertilizers can create a “death spiral” in your soil. When synthetic fertilizers are added they render the living soil organisms obsolete and these organisms either die off or move elsewhere. This loss of organisms means that natural replenishment of fertility is eliminated and even more synthetic fertilizers have to be added to allow plants to grow. Of course, the best gardening advice is to start with a soil test (visit soiltest.vt.edu to learn more) to know what, if any, amendments are needed. And, when amendments are called for, select organic options like compost and well-rotted manure, which can work with those powerful microscopic soil organisms rather than against them. So after 200 years of learning about soil health, the research has circled back to Jefferson and Washington’s long ago advice on how to feed the soil. Sometimes history can be a great teacher.
