On a recent trip to Central Australia, I came across an Aboriginal word called Bookarrarra. The word comes from the Nyikina and Barkinji people and it means ‘the past, present and future fused at this moment in time’. To me, this is one of the most profound descriptions of what design is and why it is so important that we continue to recognise, reward and celebrate it through our annual Good Design Awards. Australia’s Good Design Awards is the country’s oldest international design awards and proudly, one of the oldest in the world with its roots going right back to the Industrial Design Council of Australia in 1958. Last year we celebrated 60 Years of Good Design with a stunning ceremony at the Sydney Opera House. Bookarrarra is an important word to reflect on as we step into the next 60 years of good design and transition to a world that is set to experience exponential advancements in science and technology while on the other hand, one that continues to grapple with big issues such as climate change and inequality, to name a few. As an Industrial Designer, I’ve been trained to see the world around me as an object of design. From the design of products we use each and every day, the services we interact with and the places and spaces we occupy, to the design of the processes and systems that underpin business, industries and economies. Design impacts every part of our society and our natural and built environment. A design mindset allows us to learn and build from the past to create an improved present and work towards a better future in the most sensitive, efficient and practical manner possible. The projects represented in this year’s Good Design Awards do just that. They give us a glimpse of the future through our NextGen Category Winners and inspire us to reach further, to keep creating and innovating for the betterment of society and our environment reflected in our Good Design Award Category Winners. One of the things the Nyikina people say is that we live in a world of we, not me – another important lesson we can learn from the longest living designers on earth. This will be another valuable insight as we aim to harness the power of good design for the collective wellbeing of Australia and indeed, the global community. It is in this age-old wisdom that we truly honour the past to create a better future and why I am particularly proud of our Indigenous Designer Award which recognises and celebrates the important contribution that Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers make. On behalf of Good Design Australia, I am deeply honoured to present this year’s Good Design Awards as a showcase of design excellence. Congratulations to all the inspiring designers, engineers, architects and changemakers represented in this Yearbook, may you continue to design a better future for us all.

The Engineering Design Category is proudly founded and presented by Aurecon.
To make the world a better place we need engineering design that has humanity at its heart. At Aurecon, we engineer for life, serving society to create a positive legacy. We know the work we do today makes a difference in the lives of current and future generations. We want to help our clients make the world a better place through design excellence and creativity. Sharing a mission with Good Design Australia for design to play a critical role in creating a better, safer and more prosperous world, Aurecon established the Engineering Design Category in 2018 to reflect the fundamental impact of engineering design in the public realm and the importance of embracing and fostering design-led approaches for shaping the future. As the world becomes increasingly complex, ambiguous and volatile, creative and innovative design must underpin the way we frame and solve the problems facing humanity and our environment. Engineers are ideally placed to influence the design of many complex facets of the world in which we live and we encourage everyone in our industry to showcase their design-led innovations and the growing importance of design across business and industry.
At Aurecon, we strive to work and think like designers in framing our client’s complex problems. This enables us to effectively navigate uncertainty and complexity to deliver new value for our clients and ultimately, our client’s customers. We take the time to stop, think and interrogate our client’s challenge from every angle. We know that the macro-solution we eventually create is a result of answering the multiple micro-questions we unearth throughout this purposeful process. Using creativity and expertise in engineering design we put people at the centre of the solution. This year, we are proud to once again celebrate our finalists and winners for challenging the status quo and pushing the limits of design, to shape a brighter future for humanity. On behalf of Aurecon, I congratulate all designers, engineers, architects and innovators who created the inspirational designs featured in this year’s Good Design Awards. I hope their ingenious work inspires others to design a better future for us all.

The Social Impact Category is presented by Donkey Wheel Foundation and Benefit Capital.
Good people spend extraordinary energy, and apply hard won expertise trying to make the world better. Governments and other funders spend billions on social services and projects designed to create a fairer and more just world. Yet, entrenched disadvantage not only continues for many Australians, it’s getting worse. Access to opportunities and benefits our society offers remain out of reach for millions through no fault of their own. We need a better system. Unfortunately, the way we have tackled social challenges has become as entrenched as the disadvantage experienced by the intended beneficiaries. If we keep doing things in the way we have always done them we will keep getting the same results.
Fortunately, there are shining examples of well-designed social impact initiatives being implemented around the country. The donkey wheel Foundation and Benefit Capital are jointly committed to shining a light on these and congratulate Good Design Australia for including the Social Impact Category to provide a platform to celebrate this work. It is our hope that as the profile of the Social Impact Category increases, not only will those in the for-purpose sector get to see outstanding examples of well-designed social impact projects, but designers will be increasingly attracted to applying their talents to products and services with better outcomes for marginalised people at the core of their reason for being.
15
—
16
The time is ripe for designers to get more involved. As a starting point, we should be putting the users of social services and products at the centre of the designs that seek to “help” or serve them. Government social technocrats or entrepreneurs will continue to have a critical role to play, but the shape of our community response to inequality should not be left solely to them. Other sectors, most notably technology, have enjoyed a well understood process for innovation for many years but this has not been the case for social impact. We need to develop systems and processes in social innovation that allow the agile prototyping and evidence based, place sensitive scaling of initiatives. Developing such systems and processes matters at lot. It matters most for those millions of Australians experiencing disadvantage. And it also matters for the rest of us who want to live in and contribute to a more just society.

The Product Design Furniture and Lighting Category is proudly presented by Stressless.
Our company Stressless® is located in a small town in western Norway. A beautiful place in a fjord surrounded by majestic mountains. This scenery is where we find the inspiration for our unique designs. Stressless® furniture is designed with your body in mind. That’s why we make the most comfortable chairs, sofas and dining chairs in the world. Our furniture helps you to sit down and relax in the most comfortable way possible. We’ve built on our experience since 1934. Our heritage in furniture making combined with innovative production methods ensures a high level of quality, comfort and design. Being one of the world’s largest premium furniture manufacturers comes with responsibilities however. All our leather is manufactured in keeping with current laws and guidelines for animal welfare, health, safety and the environment. Here, we work alongside recognised international institutions to ensure that we are always up-to-date. It is however under the surface of supple leather that true engineering genius lies. From multifaceted sets of springs to foam that contours to your body, every aspect contained within Stressless® furniture is deliberately engineered, designed and assembled to bring you an unparalleled seating experience. To explain why we at Stressless® sponsor the Good Design Awards, I reflect on my own personal experience attending high school more than 20 years ago. At that time, it didn’t seem so significant, however there we were, 7 eager year ten students wishing to select wood technics as a HSC subject for the coming 2 years. Whilst our enthusiasm was unwavering, the school decided we did not meet the student quota to justify it being a HSC subject for the coming terms. Humans are blessed with all sorts of talents, some natural and some learnt. Yet, we never quite know the true potential of these talents unless they are nurtured. Design plays such an important role in our lives and throughout history, that a continual focus and commitment to it within our education system is essential to encourage and nurture those who have a true passion for design. Good Design Australia plays a fundamental part in elevating this focus, by recognising all those who are committed to designing and building a better future for generations to come.
Over the last decade, we have seen significant advancements in design within the furniture industry, based largely on consumers demand for increased comfort, function and integration. Whilst the aesthetic value of any piece of furniture is always strongly considered, the broader seating market has seen a large shift towards motion and motorisation, to enhance comfort and personalise the users experience. An increased focus on the sustainable and ethical sourcing of materials has also had a positive influence on furniture design, playing a emerging role in purchase consideration. At Stressless® we believe in a balanced life, one where you can have an active lifestyle, whilst making room for relaxation and calmness. A life where you from time to time can just sit down, recharge and gather the energy you need to face whatever life throws at you. We have a long history in challenging the conventional way of making furniture. Understanding the science of comfort and movement fuelled our innovative spirit and desire to design the most comfortable, unique furniture in the world. The result is a perfect combination of functionality and design with instant comfort. We are proud to support Good Design Australia along with Dr Brandon Gien and all members and entrants of the Good Design Awards, who keep the design flame burning brightly in this country.

The Indigenous Designer Award is proudly presented by RMIT.
RMIT University is proud to sponsor the Indigenous Designer Award as part of the Good Design Australia Awards program. As a University of Design, Technology and Enterprise, design in its many disciplinary manifestations is core to what we do in terms of education, research and community and industry engagement. From Vocational Education to Higher Education degrees, Masters programs, Doctoral Education and Executive Education in design, we offer design education across our campuses and research institutions in Australia, Vietnam, Singapore and Barcelona. At the same time the University is deeply committed to reconciliation and recognition that we undertake all that we do in Australia on the unceded lands of the indigenous owners, and that we are building on 70,000 plus years of knowledge practices of the traditional owners of Australia. This recognition extends to the traditional owners of all the lands that we undertake our work and study at internationally.
This really isn’t just a design issue, it is needed across all discipline domains, and to date Indigenous knowledge contributions have not been recognised and respected in the manner that they should and could. I must emphasise that this award is not about design aesthetics or the way that things look, it is about the knowledge practices that underpin how indigenous designers work, their relationship to country, to tradition and the relationship between people and place. Non-indigenous Australian designers have much to learn through being in relationship with our indigenous colleagues. This award is a small step in what we hope is a greater transformation in Australian Design practice into the future.

It is the combination of design in its many forms, and the knowledge practices of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that underpins the Indigenous Designer Award. Through this award our intention is to support and evidence the ways that Australian design can mature through learning from, and working with, indigenous designers and their rich knowledge and creative traditions. We want to celebrate, recognise and support the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island designers bring to Australian design across the nation.

Fostering young talent is something I’m very passionate about, and something I strive to do personally, professionally and philanthropically. I really believe it is the most important category in the Awards. Yes, these people are the future of innovative design, but they are also the now – more and more I am seeing talented and tenacious young designers developing ideas that break rules and push boundaries, often for the betterment of the world. This is something I have pursued in my professional career and something I am determined to continue to support.

The Inventia Rastrum 3D Bioprinter is a revolutionary 3D bioprinting platform driven by the needs of biomedical researchers and tissue engineers. With applications in cell-based research and regenerative medicine, Rastrum has the potential to revolutionise biomedical research.
Inventia Rastrum 3D Bioprinter is a revolutionary 3D bioprinting platform
Challenge Culturing cells in 2D has been the bedrock of biomedical research for decades — it is simple and efficient. But there’s a problem with this approach — cells in the body don’t grow in 2D. 3D cell models better represent human tissues and more accurately replicate biological processes and drug responses. The process of creating 3D cell models is currently a time consuming and expensive manual process. The challenge was to develop a user-friendly device that would allow researchers to create realistic 3D cell models accurately and quickly, in a repeatable and scalable way, accelerating discovery and helping to generate high-impact research.
Solution Rastrum is a bench-top device that prints 3D cell models, using living human cells, quickly and efficiently within a safe, self-contained environment. Rastrum makes the creation of 3D cell models easy, efficient and reproducible. A bespoke Vial Tray provides bio-inks and support materials for each print and houses living cells ready for printing. A sophisticated system of compressed-air lines and miniature solenoid valves builds living cells and support materials into detailed 3D structures on a microplate. A laminar airflow system means Rastrum doesn‘t need to be inside a bio-safety cabinet — enclosed air runs through HEPA filters, protecting cells from contamination.
Impact
47
—
48
Using Rastrum, researchers are able to produce in hours what may have previously taken days or weeks. The speed of delivering 3D cell models means researchers can conduct significantly more experiments, screening thousands of treatment drugs and effectively turbo-charging their research into cancer treatment. Because 3D cell models better represent human tissues, they also more accurately replicate biological processes and drug responses, helping to generate high-impact research. 3D technologies such as Rastrum will transform the working environments of drug research laboratories, bringing higher levels of realism, efficacy and the potential to print tissues, skin and organs in the future.

RangerBot is the world’s first vision-based underwater robotic system designed specifically for coral reef environments. Its unique design and intuitive user interface provides end-users (coral reef mangers, researchers, and community groups) with a targeted, affordable and reconfigurable solution for upscaling monitoring and management of reef ecosystems worldwide.
RangerBot is the world’s first vision-based underwater robotic system designed specifically for coral reef environments.
Challenge RangerBot solves the specific challenge of empowering reef managers, researchers and community groups with intuitive, customisable and affordable robotic tools to upscale underwater monitoring of the Great Barrier Reef, control marine pests and facilitate coral restoration activities.
The objectives: Built around world-leading image processing algorithms giving diver like capabilities, the design brief required; 1 Day-night visual navigation and science data collection capabilities, 2 Six degree-of-freedom manoeuvrability, 3 Ability to attach multiple science and manipulation payloads, 4 Transportation on commercial flights (without batteries), 5 An intuitive interface to engage a range of stakeholders, and 6 A build price range of AUD$5k – 20k
Solution RangerBot was co-developed around a world-leading autonomous vision system and a unique and functional physical form over a 12-month development phase. This demanded a multi-disciplinary design team of AI specialists, engineers, industrial and interactive designers. The design was guided by end-user functional requirements and 10 years of operational experience in marine robotics. Monthly prototype trials in pools and on the Great Barrier Reef provided critical design, usability and performance feedback allowing iteration to validate the product at each stage. This ensured that on every performance metric (robotic capability, usability, hydrodynamics, controllability and transportability) the final product exceeded the brief.
— 53
RangerBot continues to achieve positive impact and international commercial interest. RangerBot’s have demonstrated the ability to control pests like the Crown-Of-Thorns Starfish on the Great Barrier Reef, and monitor and map reef health indicators such as coral bleaching and water quality. RangerBot’s ability to revolutionise the way our oceans and coral reefs are managed is continually being assessed by Australia’s primary research and management agencies with commercial orders already taken. In November 2018, a world’s first demonstration used RangerBot’s to spread coral larvae over reefs damaged by bleaching and cyclones. This is now being translated to other locations worldwide.
