GO NUTS FOR BETTER BRAIN FUNCTION
HFCS & U
Obesity continues to be a growing problem in the U.S.—a problem that can lead to a host of health issues, including an enhanced risk of developing colorectal cancer. One factor propelling the rise in obesity rates is the use of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). New findings show that a specific enzyme in tumors (ketohexokinase) converts HFCS into fructose-1-phosphate, a compound that works to modify tumor cell metabolism and increases tumor growth. Scientists suggest that continual consumption of modest amounts of HFCS can promote tumor growth, even in those who aren’t obese. This may explain why an increased intake of HFCS over the past few decades has corresponded with elevated rates of colorectal cancer in the U.S. Goncalves MD. High-fructose corn syrup enhances intestinal tumor growth in mice. Science. 22 Mar 2019: Vol. 363, Issue 6433, pp. 1345-1349. DOI: 10.1126/science.aat8515.
Going nuts for nuts could be the answer for better cognitive health in older people. According to a new study from the University of South Australia, eating 10 grams (about a hefty handful) of nuts each day was positively correlated with enhanced mental capacity, including improved thinking, reasoning, and memory. The research published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging suggests that older adults could elevate their cognitive function by up to 60 percent, compared to those not eating nuts—a welcome sign for those prone to diseases like Alzheimer’s. Not only can nuts boost brain performance, they are also packed with healthy fats, protein, and fiber, making them the perfect snack to keep you healthy and satiated. Ming L. ♥ MAGNESIUM
Most Americans aren’t getting enough magnesium—and that’s a problem since individuals with intakes below the recommended daily allowance are 40 percent more likely to have elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels than people getting enough of this vital mineral. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina have found that CRP can trigger acute inflammation, which is a significant risk factor for heart disease. The good news is that this research also shows it doesn’t seem to matter if your magnesium comes from natural food sources like spinach, tuna, nuts, and seeds, or from supplements. If you do supplement, look for the glycinate form of the mineral to maximize absorption and minimize gastrointestinal issues. King DE. Dietary magnesium and C-reactive protein levels. HEALTHY AGING
While exercise and a balanced diet are vital for healthy aging, owning a pet can be just as important to good health later in life. According to new data from the National Poll on Healthy Aging, more than three-quarters of pet owners aged 50 to 80 said their animals reduce stress and two-thirds said their pets help them be physically active. Even more impressive was that for individuals who described their health as fair or poor, owning a pet seemed to provide greater benefits. Over 70 percent of these older adults claimed that their pet helps them manage physical or emotional symptoms—and 46 percent said their pets help take their mind off of pain. Janevic M. IT’S BACKTO-SCHOOL
bug on seas
How to dodge the sniffles, sneezes, coughs, and colds by Michele Cagan Back to school often means a trip back to the doctor for kids and their parents. Your little germ magnets get exposed to coughs, colds, sore throats, and sniffles. They trade viruses faster than Pokémon cards, so ailments spread swiftly through the young crowd. Kids rarely make the hand washing all-star team, they stick toys in their mouths, and they often share food. In that spirit of sharing, they bring infections home for the whole family. What’s more, since there are hundreds of different cold viruses, it’s impossible to 10
build up complete immunity. That’s why kids suffer an average of six colds every school year. If you’re lucky, you might be able to avoid one or two. But chances are, whatever your child brings home will land on you as well. And even if you don’t catch it, if your child is too ill to go to school, you’ll probably have to take a sick day too. The season’s circulating viruses bring on the three most common back-toschool complaints: colds, sore throat, and earaches. In the best-case scenario, your child won’t get sick at all or the illness will only knock them out for a day or two. You can make those the most likely outcomes by taking a preventive approach. To do that, you need to know exactly what you’re up against.
BUGS TO BEAT Colds— officially called rhinoviruses—rank among the most contagious ailments on Earth, especially in the classroom. Marked by runny noses, soggy sneezes, and copious coughing, colds spread easily and quickly. Symptoms usually appear within two days after infection. Most of the time, colds disappear after a week or so with no trip to the pediatrician necessary. Sometimes, though, they can evolve into more serious infections (like bronchitis, for example), calling for a doctor visit. Sore throat comes from a variety of sources, from common colds to postnasal drip to the super dry air in heated rooms. Sometimes though, streptococcal pharyngitis—the dreaded “strep throat”—makes the rounds. How can you tell the difference? Strep throat often comes with a high fever, painful
Good Health TM
swallowing, and nausea. The strep bug may call for a round of antibiotics. Earaches often grow out of colds, but sometimes they just crop up out of nowhere. Otitis media (the official moniker for an earache) can be shockingly painful and may come with a fever. And while antibiotics used to be the go-to treatment, that’s no longer the standard except for the most severe cases. With all of these illnesses working against you, it can be a challenge to keep your family healthy once school starts up.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED Arm yourself with a natural “antiviral first aid kit” so you and your kids can sidestep most of the viruses floating around. And if you do succumb, you’ll have milder symptoms and get better faster. For complete protection against back-to-school germs, stock your kit with these three thoroughly researched and Dr. Mom-approved remedies.
andrographis:
You may have never heard of andrographis, but you’ll fall in love with it during cold and flu season. Several clinical studies have clearly demonstrated its cold-fighting powers. Andrographis can prevent the common cold from taking hold—even in kids who are constantly exposed. When cold symptoms do show up, andrographis helps banish them in no time flat. Studies show that it reduces symptom intensity (especially runny noses and sore throats) in just two days, and dramatically decreases even the worst symptoms (like earaches and coughing) by day three.
LIFESTYLES
For best results, look for a standardized andrographis supplement that contains at least 80 mg of andrographolides, the key virus-killing compound. For preventing colds and other infections, take 400 to 1,200 mg of standardized andrographis every day, starting about three weeks before the kids are back in school.
propolis that’s standardized, purified, and clear of beeswax.
probiotics:
Believe it or not, your digestive tract holds nearly 70 percent of your immune system. That’s why a healthy gut is your number one ally in the fight against back-to-school germs. Good bacteria
propolis:
“Bee glue” may sound weird, but it’s one of the most protective substances in the world. Propolis— a.k.a. bee glue—coats, seals, and strengthens beehives. More important, it protects the bees inside against every invader imaginable, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Propolis also offers a broad-spectrum shield against a wide variety of infectious microbes in humans. That includes the bacteria that cause strep throat, flu viruses, and cold viruses. It can even kill off drug-resistant superbugs! Studies show that propolis (especially when combined with zinc) can reduce the frequency of ear infections, fight the flu, ward off colds, and shorten their duration. Packed with protective bioflavonoids, antioxidants, and nutrients, propolis contains everything you need to thwart whatever germs the classroom sends your way. To maximize these benefits, most experts recommend a daily dose of 100 to 200 mg. Use care in choosing a propolis extract, though. The best extracts come from “controlled” environments, where hives are placed strategically near the most beneficial plants. Look for
(probiotics) strengthen and support your immune system, but things go awry when bad bacteria take over. Many things can contribute to an imbalance including antibiotics, poor diet, and stress. The good news: You can restore good bacteria with a probiotic supplement. The bad news: Most probiotics sold on store shelves won’t deliver the beneficial bacteria you need. To get the best result, you’ll need at least 20 billion live, active probiotic bacteria in every dose. For full immune system support—and the ability to fight infections before they strike—look for proven probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum.

BLOOD FLOW BASICS Ways to improve circulation naturally!
U in your fingers or toes—or nless you have numbness
wounds that seem to take forever to heal —you probably don’t give your circulatory system a lot of thought. Yet the blood that flows through the highways and byways of your circulatory system provides the billions of cells throughout your body with the oxygen and the nutrients they need to function. Poor circulation can rob your muscles and organs of these critical nutrients. Of more concern, poor circulation can be a precursor to a heart attack, stroke, or even amputation. How do you know if you’ve got sluggish circulation? Some of the obvious signs include pain and swelling in the hips or legs, tiredness, numbness, cold hands and feet, or cramping or tingling in the fingers and toes. The cause can be something as simple as your lifestyle choices or the number of birthdays you’ve celebrated. But, while there are some risk
12
factors like age that you can’t control, there are a number of things you can do to get your blood flowing again!
BE ARTERY SMART
If you’ve got a clogged pipe in your kitchen or bathroom, any plumber will tell you that it can eventually affect every room in the house. The same is true for your circulatory system—that complex network of arteries, veins, and capillaries that transport oxygen-rich blood throughout your entire body. Anything that impedes the free flow of blood can eventually impact other bodily systems. Certain medical conditions can damage your arteries and reduce blood flow. Oxidized LDL (“bad”) cholesterol can contribute to the buildup of arterial plaque. High blood pressure can injure the lining of your arteries, technically known as the endothelium. This too can leave you vulnerable
for the accumulation of plaque that can slow the flow of blood. Another factor that can injure the endothelium is diabetes. Uncontrolled blood sugar not only encourages inflammation, it increases triglycerides and decreases “good” HDL cholesterol—all factors that can impact circulation. Your habits and lifestyle choices matter. Cigarette smoking contributes to poor circulation by constricting blood vessels. Over time, this injures the smooth endothelial lining and can lead to reduced blood flow. A sedentary lifestyle promotes sluggish blood flow. If you spend your

days sitting behind a desk or in a car, it’s important to move your body periodically and adopt a regular exercise routine. What you eat is also key. A diet filled with unhealthy fats and refined foods can lead to impaired circulation. Even one unhealthy meal can slow the flow of blood through your arteries, say Canadian researchers at the University of Calgary. Their research, which was presented at the 2012 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, proved that just one highfat, fast food meal can reduce blood flow by as much as 20 percent—a reduction that can take up to 24 hours to normalize. Instead, focus on whole foods, including fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like olive oil or nuts and seeds, and lean protein.

vitamin C and vitamin E or betacarotene. In an eight-week study of healthy postmenopausal women, grape seed extract effectively enhanced blood flow. Another study found that the OPCs in grape seed extract reduced leg swelling and edema (both signs of poor circulation) by an impressive 40 percent among young women after six hours of sitting. Yet, most grape seed extracts have a high molecular weight and contain tannins that can interfere with absorption. Look for a tannin-free supplement that contains VX1 French grape seed extract to ensure a low molecular weight for optimal absorption.
Omega-3s
CIRCULATORY SUPPLEMENTS
While adopting a healthy diet and exercise program can foster better circulation, adding the following nutrients to your daily regimen can help protect your circulatory system even as you age. This is especially important if you’re already at an increased risk of heart disease.
French Grape Seed Extract
The secret to grape seed’s blood flow benefits comes from oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), powerful antioxidants that also boast anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that the OPCs in French grape seed extract are better free radical fighters than a combination of either 14
Mesoglycan
This compound is naturally found in the lining of blood vessels. When taken in supplemental form, it provides glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)—vital and necessary components of the endothelial cells that line healthy blood vessels and keep them flexible. As a result, blood vessels are stronger, which helps maintain healthy blood flow. In an Italian clinical study of patients with heart disease, mesoglycan showed healthy anti-clotting activity after just one dose. A similar clinical trial of patients with atherosclerosis published in the journal Current Therapeutic Research showed improved blood flow in just 30 days. In another Italian placebo-controlled study of 64 diabetic patients with peripheral artery disease, those taking mesoglycan experienced an improvement in pain-free walking and improved endothelial function, suggesting significantly better blood flow to the legs.
Found in cold-water, fatty fish like salmon, omega-3s are especially beneficial for healthy circulation. The key omega-3 fatty acids in fish— DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)—improve blood lipid profiles, reduce inflammatory markers, and help build strong, flexible arteries and blood vessels, all factors that improve circulation. One Dutch study found that omega3s enhance circulation in the brain while also providing other brain-boosting benefits. An earlier study conducted at the University of California, Davis, reported that supplementing with omega-3s significantly enhanced brachial artery dilation and blood flow compared to a placebo. Fortunately, you don’t need to take massive doses or oil-filled capsules to reap these circulatory benefits. For a more convenient choice, look for an omega-3 supplement created from salmon that is bound to phospholipids so you only need to take one tablet or capsule daily.

Manly MENopause? The truth about andropause by Kim Erickson
H
ave you been feeling a little hot under the collar lately, but seldom under the sheets? Is your midsection getting softer by the day? Are your mood swings and night sweats enough to drive your partner to the couch? I know what you’re thinking: It must be menopause. But wait a minute, you’re a man! Could you also be in for a “change of life?” ANDRO WHAT? Although male menopause has historically been brushed aside as myth, recent studies are giving the condition credibility. Here’s what you need to know: Scientists have long known that a man’s testosterone level begins a slow downhill slide as early as age 30, dropping about one percent a year after the age of 50. Add that to the fact that other sex hormones and brain chemicals also begin to fluctuate, and middle-aged men can quite possibly look forward to an array of andropause symptoms, including a loss of muscle mass, fatigue, depression, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction (ED), and
16
LIFESTYLES
even hot flashes. But not having enough testosterone can also increase your risk of some life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. THE T FACTOR Testosterone is made in the testes and it’s the most important reproductive hormone in men. In fact, it’s the hormone responsible for that deep voice, those burly muscles, and your cool hipster beard. This super-hormone also supports healthy bones, muscle mass, and red blood cell production. It even dictates where body fat is stored. If you suspect your levels are low, get checked. Initially, your doctor will measure your total testosterone using a simple blood test. Normal levels fall between 300-1,000 ng/dl. A reading below 250 indicates low testosterone levels. Other tests may also be conducted to measure the amount of free testosterone and another hormone called dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)—a hormone produced by the adrenals that serves as a precursor to testosterone. UNDER THE HOOD One of the most frustrating side effects of low testosterone levels can often be found in the bedroom. Testosterone is central to a man’s sexual response, including the mechanics of triggering an erection. In fact, testosterone modulates nearly every step involved in gaining and maintaining an erection, from the nerves in the pelvis to the smooth muscle and endothelial cells of the corpora cavernosa. This he-man hormone also regulates sexual desire and the timing
Good Health TM
of the erectile process. Low testosterone levels can undermine performance and interfere with intimacy. But that’s not all. Erectile dysfunction can actually be one of the first indicators that you may have cardiovascular disease. Researchers at the University of Sheffield, U.K. have linked low testosterone to an uptick in atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart failure, and heart attack. This is because low testosterone levels are connected to insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes. Each of these factors boosts the risk of cardiovascular disease. SMARTER CHOICES For men hitting midlife, it’s often time for a diet and exercise tune-up. Whole unprocessed foods are the way to go when planning your diet. Focus on low-sugar fruits and non-starchy vegetables, as well as lean meats, fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, and healthy

fats like avocados or extra virgin olive oil. Steer clear of, or at least minimize, added sugars and carbohydrates. And since andropause can trigger weight gain, watch your portion size and try to refrain from snacking. Exercise matters too. Since there is a direct relationship between muscle mass and testosterone, you can raise your testosterone levels by getting into a weight-lifting program. Studies show that as few as two sessions of strength training per week can increase muscle strength by more than 30 percent while also boosting bone density, speeding up metabolism, and pushing up production of testosterone and other sex hormones. Exercises that target several large muscle groups (like squats or bench presses) boost testosterone levels more than those that train isolated muscles (like curls). Just don’t overdo it, especially if you are on a weight-loss diet. Over-training and

under-eating can also wreak havoc on testosterone production. SUPPLEMENT THIS! Maca is a Peruvian herb said to boost endurance, stamina, and sexual virility. It’s used by both men and women to stimulate both libido and pelvic blood flow. But does it work? A 12-week doubleblind, placebocontrolled study found that healthy men who took the herb did indeed have an increase in desire. Earlier animal studies have found that maca also increases stamina and semen quality. The key to maca’s effectiveness are glucosinolates, natural plant compounds that help balance hormone levels, particularly testosterone. According to clinical trials, this compound not only aids men suffering

Break a sweat.
Exercise naturally increases testosterone levels. Strive to get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Doing what you enjoy, whether it’s walking, weightlifting, playing sports, or riding a bike, can help you stick with it. As a bonus, exercise effectively lowers stress levels and improves mood.

from erectile dysfunction, it can also help healthy people who simply want to increase their libido. Research in the journal Urolog y shows that glucosinolates help to decrease the amount of time it takes to achieve and maintain an erection. For best results, seek out a supplement that provides a 4:1 extract of the maca root. French Grape Seed Extract is rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs) that provide powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. OPCs also inhibit an enzyme called aromatase that converts testosterone to estrogen. But grape seed extract works on numerous fronts to support good health in the midst of andropause. Studies show that the OPCs in grape seed extract increase adiponectin, a protein that regulates blood sugar, insulin, cholesterol, and inflammation, by an impressive 61 percent. One study by Dutch researchers also reports that grape seed extract can reduce the amount of calories you consume. And Spanish scientists note that, in addition to reducing food intake, the OPCs in grape seed extract specifically target belly fat—a boon for any guy looking to lose weight. Grape seed extract OPCs have also been found to protect against agerelated cognitive decline, and enhance memory and focus. It does this by preventing oxidative damage and inflammation that can cause structural changes to the brain as you age. But not all grape seed extracts deliver these results. Look for a tannin-free grape seed extract that provides low molecular weight OPCs to ensure that the molecules in the supplement are small enough to be absorbed and utilized by the body. Omega-3s protect blood vessels thanks to two fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Numerous 18

studies show that these two omega-3s help reduce high blood pressure and triglyceride levels. They modulate many of the mechanisms of atherosclerosis, including inflammation, blood clotting, and platelet aggregation (stickiness). But you needn’t take fish oil long-term before experiencing benefits. Omega-3s can bring immediate aid to your arteries. According to a 2010 trial at the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign, when 20 volunteers were fed a high-fat meal designed to dampen endothelial function and boost arterial stiffness, those who took 1,000 mg of fish oil after eating appeared to be protected against the dietaryinduced damage. Of course, this doesn’t give you an excuse to dive into a greasy burger and fries. It’s simply an example of the protective properties fish oil has on your circulatory system.
IF performance is top of mind when it comes to andropause, red ginseng may help reignite your passion and improve your capabilities.
But the benefits of omega-3s don’t stop there. These healthy fats also increase free testosterone by decreasing levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), improving testicular function, and may even enhance sperm quality. To truly reap all of the healthy advantages omega-3 fatty acids have to offer, it’s smart to add an EPA/DHA supplement sourced from salmon to your routine every day.
Red Ginseng If performance is top of mind when it comes to andropause, a unique, highly concentrated, hydroponically grown red ginseng known as HRG80 may help reignite your passion and improve your capabilities. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 45 men with ED, 60 percent of those who took red ginseng for eight weeks reported improvement in their symptoms compared to those taking a placebo. In a review of 28 studies of the herb’s efficacy that appeared in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacolog y, researchers concluded that red ginseng has hormonal effects similar to testosterone and may relax the smooth muscles of the corpus cavernosa. Red ginseng has also been found to support a healthy cardiovascular system. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in the journal Cardiovascular Therapies found that red ginseng significantly improved flow-mediated vasodilation, which expands arteries in response to blood flow. This, in turn, improves how well the inner lining (the endothelium) of arteries functions. Another trial that appeared in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine reported a significant improvement in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number), the stress hormone cortisol, and mitochondrial function. Bonus: The researchers also noted a boost in total testosterone!

dding up the numbers can stop you in your tracks. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 6.1 million children between the ages of 2 and 17 are diagnosed with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Marked by an inability to focus or pay attention, and a pattern of acting impulsively, 6 out of 10 (62 percent) of them take medication for the disorder. That represents 1 out of 20 kids in the US! In up to 60 percent of these cases, this neurobehavioral disorder continues into adulthood and it’s often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. To further complicate the diagnosis, not all ADHD is the same.

Getting a proper diagnosis of the type of ADHD, as well as understanding all the options for treatment, can save children and adults from low self-esteem, social problems, and an inferior quality of life. For those who think that synthetic drugs are the only solution, there is good news. Effective nutritional solutions for ADHD can help both children and adults with ADHD.
NOURISHMENT MATTERS
Since ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder, it makes sense to rely on brain-healthy foods for better focus and stamina. It’s well documented that sugary substances lead to cravings for more sugar and a “sugar high” that leads to greater impulsivity even in someone not challenged with the disorder. A high-protein, low-sugar diet free from food additives like artificial colors and flavors can help manage symptoms. Beans, lean organic meat, organic eggs, and nuts are all good protein sources. Skip or try to limit any sugar-based foods including those with hidden sugars from things like corn syrup. Another hidden trigger is food additives, many of which are banned in Europe. A partial list of artificial colors linked to ADHD includes Blue #1 and #2 food coloring, as well as Green #3, Orange B, Red #3 and #40, and Yellow #5 and #6. Pay close attention to food labels and avoid these additives—a task that is easier to do if you stick to whole and fresh foods. Also, eliminate “white” foods, as in white flour and white rice—stick to whole grains instead.
GO FISH!
Since omega-3 fatty acids are essential for someone dealing with ADHD, the answer for this nutritional component may seem simple: Eat fish. Yet most people don’t eat enough fish, or enough of the right types of fish, to get results. Research shows that the health benefits from fish come from two specific omega-3 fatty acids—
LIFESTYLES
eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Since fish often doesn’t make a regular appearance on the dinner table, many people turn to fish and krill oil supplements to get these two vital fats. The problem is, most fish oils are processed using heat and chemical solvents which make the fatty acids less absorbable and bioavailable to cells. What has been shown to be superior is DHA from the head of Atlantic salmon and obtained using a unique enzyme and cold-water extraction. This type of processing provides natural DHA and EPA in a form the body can use. It also gives the bonus of health-promoting phospholipids and peptides in addition to the omega-3s. This approach to obtaining omega-3s allows someone with ADHD to reap the benefits of the omega fatty acids without the worries of heavy metals, rancidity, and even fishy burps that often accompany other types of fish and krill oil supplements. How well do omega-3s work for kids with ADHD? One Dutch study found that higher blood levels of DHA correlated with better spelling and reading scores. Another clinical study involving 8- to 10-year-old boys showed that DHA supplementation improved attention span and may have helped play a role in rewriting cortical attention networks in the brain in just eight weeks. And 7- to 9-year-olds showed improved reading scores after DHA supplementation. Parents also noted better overall behavior. With these impressive findings, it makes sense to introduce omega-3s into a child’s regimen as early as possible.
MORE SUPPLEMENTS THAT SHINE
There are a multitude of botanicals that deliver when it comes to ADHD. Consider adding one or more of the following to your child’s daily routine:
Saffron and Curcumin The first is saffron, a spice that many people know because of the unique flavor it adds to food. In a six-week randomized, doubleblind study, children between the ages of 6 and 17 were given either a synthetic drug most often prescribed for ADHD or 20 to 30 milligrams of a saffron supplement. The treatments worked equally well as rated by the Teacher and Parent ADHD Rating Scale. Children taking the saffron received the same benefit and skipped the side effects associated with the drug. Adding a highly absorbable form of curcumin such as BCM95 (Curcugreen) enhances saffron’s antidepressant and neuroprotective benefits in those with ADHD.
Echinacea While most people equate echinacea with immunity, this herb also contains a unique compound that influences brain chemistry and can reduce the anxiety common in those with ADHD. This novel form of echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia) utilizes a specialized extract of the plant that contains phytonutrients shown to support brain receptors associated with feelings of
21
Good Health TM
relaxation. Taking this herb in a tablet form, which contains the clinically studied, unique extract of Echinacea angustifolia called EP107, can spare the drowsiness and common side effects that go with anti-anxiety medications. One study showed that when it was given to participants experiencing anxiety, there was a decrease in their measurable anxiety levels. These benefits not only lasted during the remainder of the seven-day trial, they persisted for the following two weeks—and none of the children experienced side effects. Adaptogens Rhodiola and Ashwagandha Rhodiola has been clinically shown to boost focus and concentration, promote resilience, and reduce fatigue under a variety of circumstances. Who has a more hectic schedule than physicians on the night shift? A well-known clinical study showed that even under these circumstances, rhodiola improved total mental performance. From test-taking to help in reducing feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, rhodiola appears to have a direct, positive action on brain chemistry and the way it affects focus and mood. Another adaptogen that has a positive effect on brain chemistry is ashwagandha. Extensive research has proven its ability to help stabilize the body’s response to stress, improve focus, and reduce anxiety without side effects. Combining rhodiola and ashwagandha in a synergistic formula helps support the stresses caused by ADHD. French Grape Seed and Pine Bark Focus and concentration can be a real problem for people with ADHD. An absorbable French grape seed extract that contains small molecular weight oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) has been scientifically shown to provide results. With anti-inflammatory and

ADHD?
Diagnosis is a process as there is no single test to determine ADHD. Children or adults receive an ADHD diagnosis when they show six or more symptoms in at least two settings over six months. If you suspect you or your child suffers from ADHD, work with a qualified health professional. Examples of ADHD symptoms include: • Constantly in motion • Squirms and fidgets • Doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to directly • Difficulty finishing tasks • Often interrupts or intrudes on others • Easily distracted • Excessive talking • Avoids tasks that require sustained mental effort
antioxidant actions that preserve glutathione and other natural compounds in the brain and nervous system, grape seed extract is a winning answer for ADHD. In a placebo-controlled, doubleblind study published in the European Child & Adolescent Psycholog y, OPCs boosted attention span and caused a noticeable reduction in hyperactivity after just one month. But with known adulteration of cheap ingredients like peanut skins in some grape seed supplements, and large OPC molecules that can’t be absorbed by the body, it’s imperative to choose a tannin-free, low molecular weight supplement like French grape seed VX1. Next, consider adding a pine bark extract. In a placebocontrolled, doubleblind study, children were evaluated using a series of rating scales and basic psychiatric examinations. After one month, the researchers found that the children assigned the pine bark extract showed improved attention and a 20 percent decrease in hyperactivity while those assigned the placebo showed no improvement in behavior.

Here’s an opportunity for you and your dog to get on the same page with healthy eating choices. Colorful vegetables and fruits contain phytochemicals—nutrients that help protect your dog on a cellular level. Good choices include broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, turnips, bok choy, rutabagas, and cabbage. Raspberries and blueberries are also excellent because of their antioxidant-rich properties. Eggs, sardines, and cod are more good choices because they provide vitamin D for a strong immune system. Unlike humans, dogs don’t absorb vital amounts of vitamin D from the sun and need to get it mostly through their food. Also of note when feeding your dog—watch out for synthetic food dyes, including red and yellow dyes. These artificial colors are often used in the production of dog bones and treats 24

CURCUMIN. You’ve
probably heard the buzz around turmeric and curcumin for people, but it’s also a cancer prevention tool in canines—if you pay attention to certain elements of the curcumin. Curcumin comes from the root, or rhizome, of turmeric and is an excellent way to reduce inflammation. But because curcumin is not easily absorbed in people or dogs, look for a highly absorbable curcumin supplement that contains a bioavailable form of the compound like the ingredient listed on labels under the brand name BCM-95 curcumin (Curcugreen). This type of curcumin is combined with turmeric essential oil containing ar-turmerone. Research
OMEGA-3s. Studies
show that omega-3s reduce systemic inflammation and triglycerides while increasing “good” HDL cholesterol. That’s a boost for both heart health and cancer prevention. Don’t settle for less than superior omega-3s derived exclusively from heads of Atlantic salmon and extracted using natural enzymes instead of chemicals. This method keeps the molecular structure intact and provides a clean, concentrated, and beneficial combination of eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA). Look for the words phospholipids and peptides in your omega-3 choice—critical cell-building nutrients that get the job done. All these steps go back to one point— we love our dogs and want them to live a long, vibrant life. Incorporating these four preventative steps can help safeguard the well-being of your best friend and keep them healthy for a lifetime.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, and technically the name for a full set of components called tocopherols.
WHAT IT IS:
WHERE IT COMES FROM:
Tuna, liver, oysters, and clams are excellent food sources of selenium, but Brazil nuts top the scales with up to 700 percent of daily value in just one serving!
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
Supplemental selenium is best used by the body when it is chelated to the amino acid glycine.
Selenium is an essential mineral for the thyroid, immune system, and overall vitality. MAIN USE:
Selenium helps convert thyroid hormone T4 to active T3, protects cells throughout the body from oxidative damage, and can help balance immune responses, making it especially useful for anyone with autoimmune disorders. Scientific research shows that selenium may help prevent tumor growth— low levels of the mineral could be a risk factor for prostate cancer.
MAIN USE:
Vitamin E prevents the oxidation and buildup of “sticky” LDL cholesterol in the blood vessels, and is often part of a heart-friendly regimen. In fact, natural levels of vitamin E can be boosted with CoQ10 supplementation. It is also an important antioxidant active in the outer layers of the skin and hair, where it protects those cells from oxidative damage. In addition, vitamin E keeps nerve cell signaling strong, fortifies the immune system, and helps DNA replicate properly.

is found naturally in sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, broccoli, and hazelnuts. WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
The best form of vitamin E is when it contains a full family of mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols, an under-recognized component of the nutrient. While much vitamin E research has focused on tocopherols, study of tocotrienols has found that while they protect brain cells, stop oxidative damage, prevent tumor formation, and lower cholesterol levels, they do so along different pathways than tocopherols. Additionally, tocotrienols may have anti-inflammatory capabilities that tocopherols lack. These naturally occurring components work synergistically, and this is how the vitamin is found in foods. Many supplements, however, only provide the d-alpha tocopherol form of vitamin E, which is far from the complete form, and can’t provide its full potential. At minimum, look for a supplement that contains all four tocopherols—d-alpha, beta, gamma, and delta.

Paleo Diet
Ever wonder what Mr. and Mrs. Wool E. Mammoth ate sitting around the cave? Eating the paleo way is based on the foods likely consumed during the Paleolithic era. Sometimes called the Caveman or Stone Age Diet, this includes wild-caught fish, ethically raised meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds—all things consumed before the agricultural era. What’s out? Refined sugar, grains, beans and legumes, dairy, potatoes, and processed foods. Sorry Flintstones, but Fruity Pebbles don’t make the paleo cut.
c i p o T
What’s buzzy in the world of natural health Yes, diet is a four-letter word, but then so is food. So, what’s hot right now and what’s working? Here’s a brief overview of the top-tier diets.
Ketogenic Diet
Here’s a way of eating that has gained so much popularity, it’s known among its followers as simply “keto.” Here are the basic tenants: • Eat mostly healthy fats— up to 75 percent of your calories. • Consume high-quality protein in moderation. • Restrict carbohydrates to no more than 10 percent.
Much newer on the scene, Whole30 is a strict elimination diet that adds a time element to help support a breakup with unhealthy eating habits. For 30 days straight, you will eliminate all grains, dairy, soy, beans and legumes, seed oils, alcohol, added sugars (even healthy ones), and anything made with carrageenan, MSG, and sulfites. Absolutely no variations are allowed. At the end of 30 days, previously restricted foods are slowly added back during a reintroduction phase to see if the body reacts negatively. The combination of feeling good and finding out what foods you’re reactive to encourages a long-term change in your food choices.
Keto allows the body to burn fat without hunger, weakness, or fatigue while inducing a metabolic state called nutritional ketosis. The body no longer relies on glucose as its primary energy source, but instead converts dietary fat into ketones in the liver. These ketones are then burned for energy. Favorite keto foods include avocados, grass-fed butter, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, non-starchy leafy vegetables, and lean protein like grass-fed meats, pasture-raised poultry, cage-free eggs, and wild-caught fish.

Whole30 Diet
The Ultimate Diet
With the multitude of choices for weight loss and healthy eating, it pays to be a student of any new diet path you pursue to make sure it dovetails with your health goals. That’s why most plans advise you to check with your health care practitioner before making a change. Ultimately, the best healthy-eating plan is one that you can stick with over time and delivers the results you seek.
Vegan Diet
Promoted as a way to improve health, becoming a vegan can also be a statement toward environmental or ethical choices (think animal welfare). Not to be confused with vegetarians who don’t eat animals, but do eat animal products such as dairy or eggs, a vegan’s primary source of nutrition includes fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and meat alternatives like tofu and tempeh. Multiple variations within the vegan lifestyle can exclude or include how vegan food is eaten, as in raw versus cooked. To avoid any nutrient deficiencies, vegans are encouraged to use supplements to make up for nutrients they may be missing. For example, vitamin B-12—a nutrient found in animal products—is necessary for healthy blood and nerve cells making it an excellent addition to a vegan regimen. A vast array of vegan primers exist to guide a newbie to the lifestyle.

NATURE’S BREAST CANCER DEFENDERS
Taking proper steps to prevent breast cancer is important for everyone, not just people who are aware of it because it “runs in the family.” In fact, while many people are still under the assumption that breast cancer is largely a genetic disease, research suggests that this is hardly the case. Statistics show that approximately 85 percent of all people with breast cancer don’t have a single, first-degree relative with the disease. Instead, science tells us that many cancer cases occur due to genetic changes that happen as the result of the normal aging process. This year alone, it’s estimated that 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States, in addition to 62,930 new cases of non-invasive breast cancers. The good news is that nature provides a number of nutrients and botanicals that can help prevent breast cancer—and scientific research is proving just how effective these natural solutions can be. 32
LIFESTYLES
Curcumin:
It’s no secret that persistent, low-level inflammation in the body can contribute to many diseases, including cancer. Curcumin is a potent, natural anti-inflammatory that may play a role in preventing breast cancer by shutting off the blood supply to tumors and triggering apoptosis among cancer cells. Some controlled studies have found that curcumin has an effect on highly invasive and aggressive forms of the disease, like antiestrogen-resistant and triple-negative breast cancers. Researchers have also studied the effects of curcumin
Pomegranate Seed Oil: High on the list of cancer-fighting foods, pomegranates are a delicious, ruby-red fruit with seeds that contain a powerful combination of antioxidants, including anthocyanins and polyphenols. The oil from pomegranate seeds also delivers a disease-fighting dose of omega-5 fatty acids. This unique fatty acid has been shown to inhibit both estrogensensitive and estrogen-insensitive breast cancer cells. In a cellular study, omega-5s stopped the proliferation of two types of cancer cells by 92 percent and 96 percent, respectively. In the same study, omega-5 fatty acids also supported apoptosis (cancer cell death) in two types of breast cancer cells by 86 percent and 91 percent. A separate study found that pomegranate seed oil showed a 90 percent inhibition of MCF-7 breast cancer cells, as well. Omega-5 fatty acids also have some of the same abilities of the anticancer drug tamoxifen, but without the drug’s dangerous side effects. If you have an elevated risk for breast cancer, consider supplementing with pomegranate seed oil. Researchers note that pomegranate seed oil has excellent chemo-preventive potential—either on its own or in addition to conventional therapy. A beneficial dose of pomegranate seed oil is 6001,200 mg daily.

on MCF-7 cells that become resistant to antiestrogen drugs like tamoxifen. One preliminary cell study found that curcumin helped to induce apoptosis of breast cancer cells. In a separate study of triple-negative breast cancer cells, curcumin prevented angiogenesis, which is the growth of new blood vessels that feed cancer tumors. The most effective forms of curcumin are enhanced with turmeric essential oil including arturmerone, which boosts absorption by the body. Look for an extract called BCM-95 (also listed on supplement labels as Curcugreen), a form that is backed by over 50 published studies.
Iodine:
Iodine provides a number of health benefits, including the protection against breast cancer. Scientific tests using estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells exposed to iodine have shown that they are less likely to grow and metastasize. The reason that iodine is so beneficial to breast health is because it makes breast cells less sensitive to estrogen and detoxifies certain toxins like bromide, fluoride, and chloride. Iodine has also been

Grape Seed Extract: Once cancer cells have taken hold in the body, they’ll fight with a fury to survive. Thankfully, various studies have shown that grape seed extract can be beneficial in preventing breast, prostate, and colon cancer. Research also shows that grape seed extract has an impact on cancer stem cells. However, grape seed extract is the most adulterated botanical in the world, which means you have to be extremely careful about the supplement you choose. One unique form of French grape seed extract called VX1 is unadulterated and has shown tremendous promise in reducing cancer risk. VX1 contains small, easily absorbed oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). Studies have shown that VX1 has the ability to inhibit the growth of tumors, stop the cycle of cancer cell signaling, and induce apoptosis. More importantly, preliminary research suggests that VX1 can kill cancer stem cells. These stealthy stem cells are why some cancers reoccur, primarily because they aren’t completely eliminated during chemotherapy. While this lab study was done on colon cancer cells, it shows promise for similar types of cancer stem cells, as well. Additional cell studies investigated grape seed extract’s impact on breast cancer cells, either alone or when used as part of conventional cancer treatment. Both strategies proved to be effective, but grape seed extract by itself was also able to inhibit the proliferation of breast cancer cells.
found to be beneficial for treating fibrocystic breast disease. In clinical research, approximately 70 percent of patients experienced pain relief and a reduction in abnormal tissue with iodine supplementation. In patients with mastalgia (breast pain), at least 50 percent of the women studied reported significant reductions in breast pain after taking 6 mg of iodine each day. In a separate study, 98 percent of women receiving iodine treatment
were pain free by the study’s end, and 72 percent showed improvements in breast tissue. For optimal health, an iodine supplement should deliver three different forms of iodine, including molecular iodine, sodium iodide, and potassium iodide. The right dosage depends on the unique needs of each individual, so it’s important to consult with your doctor about how much iodine is right for you. 33

Stress-Related Depression Meets its Match – Rhodiola
THE STUDY ABSTRACT:
Rhodiola rosea L. as a putative botanical antidepressant. BACKGROUND: Rhodiola rosea (R. rosea) is a botanical adaptogen with putative anti-stress and antidepressant properties. Evidence-based data supporting the effectiveness of R. rosea for depression in adults is limited, and therefore a comprehensive review of available animal and human studies suggesting a putative antidepressant action is warranted. PURPOSE: A review of the literature was undertaken to ascertain studies of possible antidepressant mechanisms of action and studies of the safety and effectiveness of R. rosea extracts in animals and adult humans. METHODS: A search of MEDLINE and the Russian state library database was conducted (up to October 2015) on R. rosea. RESULTS: MECHANISM OF ACTION: R. rosea extracts and its purified constituent, salidroside, has been shown to produce a variety of mediator interactions with several molecular networks of neuroendocrineimmune and neurotransmitter receptor systems likely to be involved in the pathophysiology of depression. A wide variety of preclinical in vivo and ex vivo studies with laboratory animals suggests the presence of several biochemical and pharmacological antidepressant-like actions. EFFECTIVENESS: Clinical assessment of R. rosea L. rhizome extracts in humans with various 34
depressive syndromes is based upon results from two randomized, doubleblind, placebo-controlled trials of 146 subjects with major depressive disorder and seven open-label studies totaling 714 individuals with stress-induced mild depression (diagnosed as asthenic syndrome or psychoneurosis). Overall, results of these studies suggests a possible antidepressant action for R. rosea extract in adult humans. SAFETY: In contrast to most conventional antidepressants, R. rosea extract appears to be well-tolerated in short-term studies with a favorable safety profile. CONCLUSIONS: R. rosea demonstrates multi-target effects on various levels of the regulation of cell response to stress, affecting various components of the neuroendocrine, neurotransmitter receptor and molecular networks associated with possible beneficial effects on mood. WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU:
Rhodiola is well-known as an adaptogen for reducing stress, boosting energy levels, and enhancing physical performance, but this study shows that it may also be an herbal powerhouse for milder forms of depression as well. Rhodiola regulates hormonal and neural responses to stress that could otherwise lead to cyclical negative mood and possibly persistent depressive disorder, formerly known as dysthymic disorder. This long-term condition has less severe symptoms than depression, but with low energy and low mood as an almost constant state for at least two years. As an adaptogen—a botanical known for helping bring physical and mental states into healthy balance—it is not surprising that rhodiola would show promise in this area. While additional clinical work is necessary and diagnosis by a medical professional is imperative, rhodiola standardized for salidroside, one of its active compounds, could help return people to a happier life without side effects.
