to t e ood ife welcome
For me, the good life often centres on food. I like to grow it, shop for it (sourcing fresh local ingredients when I can), cook it, share it, talk about it and, of course, eat it. I’ve decided to channel this passion into a regular feature in GoodLife magazine I’m calling In Season. I’ll take one ingredient, share my own favourite ways to prepare it and talk to local experts for their ideas, too. This issue, it’s all about corn. With corn season in Ontario stretching into October, there is still lots of time to pick up a dozen ears at your local farmers market or farm stand. Eat it fresh and hot, dripping with flavoured butter and freeze the leftovers to use in a soup or casserole when the weather starts to cool. And for those of you hosting Thanksgiving or any other harvest type celebration this year, we “set the table for fall” in our regular We Like It feature. We’re also marking the start of what we envision as another regular feature. Titled Destination, it will introduce you to some unique local spaces and places—and hopefully inspire you to explore York Region. For our first installment, writer Jonathan Hiltz visits Cyber City Comix and discovers a bit about the social aspect to buying and reading comics. If you have a favourite York destination you think we should profile, send me an email (goodlifeeditor@yrmg.com). For more things to do and places to visit across the region this fall, check out York Region Art Council president Nancy Bodi’s 10 reasons to fall in love with fall. This issue also includes articles to help you navigate the busy fall season. First, professional organizer Linda Vanderkolk offers tips for conquering the clutter in two family “hot zones”—the entryway and the kitchen. Second, we look to two local mindfulness practitioners and teachers for advice on how this approach to being in and aware of the present can improve health and wellness. We hope you enjoy this issue.

When you think of modern interiors, it’s not likely the word cosy comes to mind. But that’s exactly how Zahra Kanji and Imran Arain describe their north Markham home. With its six-metre (20-foot) ceilings and open concept, the 225-square-metre (2,400-squarefoot) space is the perfect backdrop to house the couple’s elegant furnishings, which range from high-end custom to pre-loved pieces. The result is a seamless mix that is eclectic and stylish yet still appropriate for a family with young children. Take their front room, for instance. Originally intended by the builder as the dining room, the couple first reinvented the space when their two children were babies. “We’re really relaxed about entertaining and we didn’t think it would be necessary to have a dining table. So we turned the space into a sort of family room,” Ms Kanji says. “It was a space for the kids to crawl around, their toys were there.” To keep the clutter under control, the couple had a banquette with built-in storage custom made. With their two girls now five and nine and a newly renovated basement to store toys, the room has once again been reinvented.

Home Decor | Custom Drapery | Wallpaper In-Home Colour Consultation | Decorating Services This time it’s more of a quiet hangout. It’s an area of the house Ms Kanji longs to spend more time in. “I always tell myself I’m going to come down and read there at night,” she laughs. The space holds just a few key pieces including her favourite, a mid-century credenza the couple scored from Goodwill. “It was an oak colour so we painted it and changed the handles,” she says. Currently the piece is just a bit darker than the wall colour, but that may soon change. “I’m thinking of painting it bright yellow to add a pop of colour,” says Ms Kanji, a home stager and owner of Cocoon Home Staging and Design. “I’m always trying to change the space.” The family’s great room has also evolved since they moved in back in 2006. “There are several design elements that I like about our home, but my favourite by far is the stone brick fireplace,” says Mr. Arain, the director of Arain Jewellers, which operates two stores in the GTA. The couple replaced the original simple gas fireplace and mantel with white quartzite stone wall tiles, installed floor to ceiling, and a large built-in flat screen television. “It’s the main focal point of the home,” he says. Though the fireplace may be the room’s show-stopper, when it comes to décor, Ms Kanji says, it all started with the sofa.

Fall 2013
They opted for a custom piece to address their specific requirements, which included a wood frame around the base rather than legs. But form and function had to go hand in hand. “We wanted a modern couch that was more than 90 inches (2-1/4 metres) long so that we could lie down on it without having our feet hit the arm rest,” she explains. “And I had to have it deep enough for me to sit with my feet up.” They paired the couch with a glass and chrome coffee table that echoes the look of the nearby mid-century dinette table. For extra seating, the couple has added two vintage blue chairs purchased off Kijiji. As with the furnishings, wall art is minimal. A large circular shelf was an ideal choice for one wall but they were stumped when it came to finding the right piece for the larger wall in the space. “Zahra ended up painting a piece to bring it all together,” Mr. Arain says. “I couldn’t find anything in the colours I wanted, in the size we needed and in the price I wanted to pay,” she explains. The master bedroom—a room only recently completed—is another place where you’ll find her art work. The piece hanging over the bed is made from a newspaper printed on the day one of their daughters was born. The final result is both beautiful and meaningful. Originally painted in a neutral “greige”, the bedroom how bears a bold steel shade. It’s a big departure for the couple but rather than oppressive, the look is cosy—thanks in part to white accents and pops of purple. At the end of the bed, they introduced a low midcentury bench. “It’s not comfortable,” Ms Kanji admits. “But it looks great!” The style and look of their home has evolved over the years and both Ms Kanji and Mr. Arain say it’s a work in progress. “We are always thinking of things to do to enhance the appearance of the home,” Mr. Arain says. “It never ends—from painting the walls a different colour, to changing the area rugs, to adding newer, more modernlooking furniture.” What remains constant is the desire to create a space that feels welcoming. “Our space is modern but it’s homey,” Ms Kanji says. Mr. Arain echoes the sentiment adding it isn’t just what you put into it but the actual process to create a space you love that creates the feeling of home: “There’s that sense of accomplishment once you know the job is done and you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour with your family.”

F owe s for the fall table BY
lEE ANN WATErMAN
Fresh flowers, says Shay Morley of Hillcrest Florist in Richmond Hill, evoke emotion. When your dinner guests arrive to a table graced with flowers, it can bring feelings of warmth, welcome and anticipation of time gathered to share a meal and one another’s company. The trend in flower arrangements, says Ms Morley, is monochromatic: flowers in shades of one or two colours, with different textures. All white flowers accented with grasses and green

hypericum berries create one popular look. For a fall arrangement, Ms Morley chose a palette of white, yellow and green: white hydrangea, sunflowers, yellow celosia, kale, variegated pittosporum and pale green orchids. “Orchids, she says, “take it up another level. People think they are too expensive but adding a couple of blooms is not going to blow the budget. Curled wire is an inexpensive and modern touch. Available in gold, silver and a range of other
colours to match your arrangement, the wire is textured so that it sparkles when light—such as candlelight—hits it. If you’re buying or DIYing an arrangement for your next dinner party, consider height and size, Ms Morley says. At a table set for eight or 10 people, a 15-centimetre (sixinch) square or round container will provide a suitable arrangement. For a buffet table, pick something long and low, 30 by 5 to 7 centimetres (12 by 2 or 3 inches). Keep the water clean and your arrangement should last up to 10 days. Fall 2013

Fall favourites Shay Morley of Hillcrest Florist gives us her top three picks for fall flowers.
Calla lilies: classic, elegant and it only takes a few to make a statement; white is most common, but Ms Morley’s favourite is a deep red-orange Celosia
Celosia: these woolly flowers add amazing texture to an arrangement; available in a variety of colours ranging from pale green and peach to bright yellow, orange and red Kale: ornamental kale in shades of green and purple is classic for fall planters; smaller varieties provide an interesting foliage in arrangements too

“We have all our own Installation teams and they’re all Window-Wise trained,” Mr. Ebner says. “We only do it once and prefer to do it right the first time.” The Window Wise quality assurance program www.windowwise.com , operated by SAWDAC (Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada), is designed to ensure efficient window installation supported by a five-year industry guarantee. This commitment to product quality and workmanship results in significant energy savings because properly-installed windows reduce both heat transmission and air leakage. This, in turn, makes a home feel warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. There are currently over 2,000 window companies in Canada, however only a small percentage of these are certified by Window Wise. “You can have the best window, but if it’s not installed properly, then what good is it? It won’t perform properly, that’s why our Installers make all the difference” notes Mr. Ebner, who has seen a growing trend toward more efficient windows that help

homeowners increase their energy savings. “A lot of people are switching to tripleglass these days as they are looking for more quieter and comfortable windows. We currently install more triple than double glazed windows.” he explains, Offering triple glass gives Northern Comfort a competitive advantage in the marketplace. “With the triple pane, it also makes more sense to have a window that’s insulated. We carry windows with the frames totally insulated for maximum comfort , where some companies have frames that are totally hollow.” A new country-wide focus on sustainability and energy efficiency has had a definite impact on Northern Comfort’s business. Ask about their “Energy Star Most Efficient Windows 2013” now available. They are the best windows on the market today, the crème dela creme. “In the old days, when builders installed a window, they would just use couple of nails to hold it in place, and that’s why there were all these problems down the road with the windows being drafty and no good,” Mr. Ebner explains. “It has to be done right.”

organize
Conquer your clutter
by
Lee ann waterMan
An extra hour, every single day. That’s what a well-organized home can give you, says professional organizer Linda Vanderkolk, who runs her own Stouffville-based business called ClutterBGone. The two “hot zones” for most families—spots where clutter quickly leads to chaos—are the entryway they use daily and the kitchen, she says. And September, with its busier days and deluge of paperwork and backpacks, can bring out the worst in both these rooms. 30

Parents need to find ways to manage the clutter that work for their family. “You want to be happy to be home, happy and relaxed,” she says. Organization can help get you there. Containment. It’s a word Ms Vanderkolk uses often. Stuff is not clutter if it’s a reasonable amount stored in a basket or bin, drawer or dish with like items in the room where you use it, she explains.
Product picks Professional organizer Linda Vanderkolk’s top organizing products for home and school.

Here are a few strategies to try at home. Entryway Children, she says, need three things to keep this area tidy: a small bulletin board where parents can post reminders (Don’t forget your lunch. I’ll pick you up at 11 a.m. for your dentist appointment.); a double hook to hang a jacket and backpack; and a basket for hats, mitts and scarves. Label each kid’s space with their name or initial.
The set-up can include elaborate built-ins or a simple row of hooks and a bench with baskets underneath. Adults, she says, may need more room, but the same principle applies: adequate designated space for the necessary items. Ms Vanderkolk suggests going vertical in the hall closet by adding shelves up top for rows of shoes. The entry should also include a “drop zone”—a table, chest of drawers or shelf with a dish where every member of the family drops their keys when they get in the door and a tray for the mail. It could also include a charging station for phones (which, with a small hole drilled through the back for the cord, could also be tucked in a drawer). The kitchen The kitchen is the hub of most family homes and it can become a dumping ground for everything from permission forms and art and craft projects to mail and library books to sunglasses and sports equipment. For harmony in the kitchen, Ms Vanderkolk suggests finding room for three things: a basket or bin for each child; an in
LEXUS OF RICHMOND HILL
box for parents; and a family calendar The baskets should hold whatever children need to do homework—pens, pencils, markers, etc.—and give them a spot to stash any artwork and other projects that come home from school or other activities. (Ms Vanderkolk suggests having kids pick one such item a week to keep, which is then moved to a bin in their bedroom. Once a month, they can pick one item from the weekly choices— leaving 10 or so souvenirs from each school year.) If kids are mid-homework when dinner is ready, supplies can be quickly scooped off the kitchen table and into their baskets for later. The in box, which can be a tray on the counter or wall-mounted bin, is for all the “to-dos” of family paperwork: receipts to be filed, bills to be paid, invitations to be answered and tests to be signed. The family calendar, Ms Vanderkolk, can be a large whiteboard hung on the wall or a more discreet paper version hung inside a cupboard. (You can purchase thin cork designed for mounting on the back of a cupboard door.) The key—as it is with any organization strategy—is that your family uses it.

corn taste summer through the fall by Lee
ann waterMan
My community may rank pretty low on the walkability scale as judged by Walk Score (a company that rates all neighbourhoods in North America based on proximity to homes of amenities such as stores, schools, parks and community). But in late summer and early fall, I can (and do) walk to more than one roadside corn stand. Corn-on-the-cob, as any farmer will tell you, is best fresh. The tried-and-true cooking method more than one has shared with me goes like 34

this: Get a big pot of salted water boiling on the stove. Run out to the field and pick what you need for dinner. Peel the husks and drop the cobs in the water. Lisa Cooper of Cooper’s CSA, Farm and Maze in Zephyr warns against overcooking. “The longer you cook it, the more sugar you’re cooking out of it,” she says. For a big pot of corn, Mrs. Cooper rotates the cobs from top to bottom of the pot

to ensure even cooking. The maximum time cobs spend in hot water is about five minutes. If you’re only cooking a couple pieces, that time will be less. Our approach varies slightly. We visit the corn stand on the day we plan to eat our corn—meaning it’s likely been picked that morning. And we cook it on our charcoal grill. Whether we’re two or 10 for dinner, I always buy corn by the dozen (or two).

Financing makes it easy, ask me!
With leftovers, I cut the kernels from the cobs (stand them up on a rimmed baking sheet and run a sharp knife down the cob), place them in a single layer on a baking sheet in the freezer (this prevents clumping) and transfer to a freezer bag after a day or so. Mrs. Cooper’s approach is even simpler: fresh, raw kernels go straight into the freezer. Either way makes it easy to eat local corn year round.

screen TVs play the hot game of the day and the fabulous food is the best part of the whole experience. Jason Goodis is general manager of this hip establishment, which opened in May, and the main cheerleader for its young and enthusiastic crew, whose members are all under 30. He explains Smash’s menu is rooted in the “comfort cuisine” of America’s south. “By offering simple food done well, it has brought our guests back to what food is all
about: good, simple, hearty,” Mr. Goodis says. The signature “Smash burger” is created by taking a ball of premium ground meat and smashing it on a flat-top griddle. Cooking it this way, crystallizes the bottom and locks all the juices in to make a delicious and unique version to one of the world’s most favourite entrées. On the menu, you’ll also find standards such as fried chicken, ribs and pizza baked in a coal-fired oven—modernized by executive chef Isaac Co.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Mr. Co began his restaurant career as a dishwasher and quickly worked his way up to becoming a chef at just 24 years old. “He has proven day in and day out that he is the wave of the future for young chefs,” Mr. Goodis says, crediting Mr. Co with the “most eclectic tastes for Southern cuisine with a twist.” When we had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant, Mr. Co made Smash Kitchen’s grilled salmon with curried chickpeas.
Grill salmon on both sides for 3 minutes. In a pan, sauté chickpeas with pico de gallo for 3 minutes. Add curry powder and garlic butter, cook on low heat for 2 minutes. Add arugula and season to taste with salt and pepper. In the meantime, blanch your vegetables and toss in a pan with olive oil, salt and pepper. To serve, use chickpeas as your base, followed by vegetables and salmon on top. Garnish with watercress. NoTE:
Pico de gallo is a fresh salsa, generally including chopped tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, lime juice and cilantro. It is simple to make and there are many recipes available online. Fall 2013

THE MILLIONAIRE’S DAUGHTER Big savings and a fun shopping environment are helping to fuel the success of a furniture consignment business newly launched in Aurora. The Millionaire’s Daughter offers quality, gently used items collected weekly from a wide range of sources including private residences, model home suites and warehouses. “We go through about seven homes of furniture per location each week. That’s seven truckloads of new merchandise each week,” says store owner and founder Maureen Barnes, whose business philosophy is to carry a wide variety of furniture and home décor items at various price points designed to meet the needs of any buyer. A growing number of devoted consignment customers are finding that the price is definitely right at The Millionaire’s Daughter. “The rule of thumb (in consignment) is one third of what someone would pay for
retail,” Ms Barnes explains. “So a $3,000 piece of furniture would sell for $1,000.” Her new 7,500-square-foot store at 40 Englehard Dr., Aurora follows the success of two locations opened in recent years in Hamilton and Oakville. Ms Barnes says she and her Millionaire’s Daughter team are excited to bring their unique shopping concept to the Aurora-Newmarket area. “It has just been so much fun that we keep getting asked to open more locations,” says Ms Barnes, who has family connections locally. And while there are no plans to franchise the stores, she’s confident the concept will continue its rapid expansion throughout the GTA. For those wondering about the name, decades ago Ms Barnes’ parents owned and operated a chain of 11 Millionaire’s Drive-in restaurants in Hamilton and Burlington. When opening her own business in 2009, she thought it fitting to keep the

family tradition alive and The Millionaire’s Daughter was born. For the uninitiated, the act of consigning involves placing material in the hands of another, but retaining ownership until the goods are sold. People consign for different reasons. Some are downsizing or moving, while others are selling possessions they may have inherited from a loved one. Ms Barnes says her clients may be changing their decorating style or colours or their living situations may require larger or smaller furniture. Buyers can find just about anything they need to furnish or decorate their living spaces. It may be that signature piece to finish a room; a dresser or sideboard to paint for a baby’s room; a seasonal piece; or china or glassware for an everyday table or special occasion. And with society’s growing commitment to recycling and reusing our possessions,

“It has just been so much fun that we keep getting asked to open more locations.” consignment certainly makes good sense. At The Millionaire’s Daughter, items are displayed in attractive vignettes to allow customers to visualize them in a room or decorative setting. Displays are changed regularly due to the unique inventory and volume of sales, allowing for a continuous flow of new merchandise on the showroom floor. The store’s website offers current information on items available. Ms Barnes says another key to success is customer service and a staff-wide commitment to taking the time to build and nurture client relationships. A majority of customers are female, so ensuring trust and security is essential. “One of the beauties of consignment is that it’s a really safe situation for the consignors,” Ms Barnes explains. Employees making pick-ups and deliveries are fully screened to ensure the highest level of reliable, professional service. Consignment also allows sellers to avoid the stress of having unknown potential buyers walking through their home to view merchandise. The Millionaire’s Daughter sells furniture and accessories on behalf of the owner, who receives 50 per cent of the sale price. Store staff previews all items and, when possible, suggests a retail price point. All consignors agree to place items in the store for four months. The prices of new items are automatically reduced by 15 per cent if they don’t sell within the first 60 days of consignment. Monthly price reductions continue until an item is sold. “The goal is always just to move the furniture as fast as possible,” Ms Barnes says. If a piece doesn’t go within the allotted time, the consignor can reclaim the goods or allow them to be donated by the store to charity.

Fall 2013
If you’re one of those people who think comic books, collectibles and superheroes are solely the stuff of children, your cape might be on a little too tight. With the incredible rise of blockbuster superhero films such as Man of Steel, The Avengers and the profoundly popular Chris Nolan Batman series, comics are seemingly enjoyed by a wider variety of people than ever. For more than a decade, Darryl Spiers has been giving comic book and all around pop culture lovers their fix. York Regioners and Torontonians alike can run for the border on Steeles Avenue just west of Bathurst Street, to visit him at Cyber City Comix. Inside, you will be treated to an ocean of bankers boxes and stocked shelves filled with new and old comic books and graphic novels. Gallery-worthy statues of legendary super heroes stand motionless in glass cases, action figures hang from the walls and unusual toys stare blankly, just waiting to be purchased. Cyber City’s typical customer is a man aged 18 to 40. He may bring his children who, due to exposure through movies and television, are interested in comics. Anime (Japanese comics) is popular with girls, Mr. Spiers says. Customers walk the aisles looking for gems they can add to their collections and
a constant but friendly pop culture debate makes its way around the store. The store, Mr. Spiers explains, adds a social element to comics. “You develop a relationship with the guy running the store,” he says. “You are around people who have similar interests.” Mr. Spiers became interested in comic books and related toys as a child and later read and collected many superhero titles. He got a job at a flea market comic book store and, after two years, he took over the business and went full-time with it at a different location. “Some people don’t understand how to read comics, how the art tells the story along with the dialogue, but they should try as there are some really great stories out there worth reading,” he said in an interview while standing behind the cash register. “People like to lose themselves in movies or books. I find comics give you the same thing, except they also give you the added bonus of the appreciation of art. And while it’s not for everyone, there is a distinct way to tell a story via comic book. I find I don’t like the same comics I used to when I was
younger, but I still have the same reasons to like them.” For people interested in getting back into comics or newbies just getting their feet wet, Mr. Spiers offers this advice: “Every character has a good ‘jump on point’ and every major series gets released in a softcover book containing five to seven issues. One of these containing an origin story is a good starting off book.” Publishers such as Marvel and DC usually have a major story line where multiple characters from different comic titles all cross over into each other. “If you’re a fan of comic books,” Mr. Spiers notes, “you already know Marvel this year has ‘Infinity’, which deals with Thanos [the bad guy at the end of The Avengers movie] and DC has Trinity War, which is a story of the different Justice League teams feuding.” Art and literature are two unique aspects of humanity deeply enjoyed by just about everyone. Comics offer both together—and, because people young and old are enjoying them, you won’t need a secret identity to explore them for yourself. For more information, visit cybercitycomix.com. Fa in in ove with fall by
nanCy Bodi
Are you having an affair with the fall? if you’re like me, you are infatuated with this time of year and sneak off to have a romance with the fall whenever you get a chance. of course, there is also the possibility that like a few of my friends, you only flirt with the fall and selectively choose when and where to pursue your passion. so what is the immense attraction with the fall? why the lust? i can only speak for myself—you might have your own ideas. however i hope my short list of fall love notes will lure you over to finding new crushes.
1. get into bed with nature. The fall, in my view, is the best time to venture into the forest and hike the trails. To me, fall hiking is a relaxing yet invigorating multi-sensory experience due to the beauty, air and sounds of the forest. My favourite trails are located around Mary Lake and near Eaton Hall at Seneca College and the 16th Sideroad in King City. The Nokiidaa Trail system in Newmarket and East Gwillimbury is excellent as are the trails to be found at the Kortright Centre for Conservation in 54

Vaughan, Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area in Stouffville and McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. If you require a quick resource to trails in York Region, visit yorkscene.com and search the interactive York Region Trail Map. You will find the region has an expansive trail system and many interesting places to hike.
2. swing into the fall harvest. The fall harvest is much to celebrate and enjoy. You can delight in the Saturday farmers markets in Newmarket, Aurora, Sharon,
King City, Woodbridge and Markham, which are active to the end of the growing season. The fall is also apple-picking time. Pine Farms Orchards on the 16th Sideroad in King City features a café, tours, gift shop and a large orchard. The Holland Marsh celebrates locally grown produce with the annual Holland Marsh Soupfest at Ansnorveldt Park in King Township. Soupfest includes artisan displays, live entertainment and a sampling of piping hot soups created by community groups, local restaurants and caterers.

on McCowan Road. You will experience agricultural competitions, midway rides, livestock shows and live entertainment as well as a horse pull, demolition derby and tractor pull. Woodbridge fair: This spectacular fair, produced by the Woodbridge Agricultural Society, has been held annually on Thanksgiving weekend since it early origins in 1918. At the Woodbridge Fair, you will experience a petting zoo, sheep-shearing and cow-milking contests, demolition derby, live entertainment, midway rides, pioneer building, children’s village and more. The Woodbridge Fairgrounds are located off of Kipling Avenue in Woodbridge.
4. Meet Jake charles and discover georgina island and first nation traditions. For a truly special outing, book a First Nation Cultural Tour at Georgina Island with Jake Charles Nanockashee Hummingbird, Chippewas of Georgina Island band member. Mr. Charles will captivate you with his rich knowledge of Georgina Island First Nation and Ojibwa traditions and teachings. During the three-hour tour, you will visit the purification lodge, wigwam, sugar shack and maple syrup site, sample traditional foods as well as a hike on First Nation Cultural Tour property. Catch the ferry from Virginia Beach in Georgina and enjoy the boat trip to and from the island. For more information, contact Jake Charles at medicinewolf.jc@gmail.com.
3. have a fall fair affair. Summer is over, the kids are back to school and work is ramping up. Yet the festival season is still going strong with plenty of outdoor fairs and festivities you can enjoy on weekends with your family. I recommend you check out these two hot fairs: Markham fair: Now in its 169th year, the Markham Fair is Canada’s largest four-day agricultural fair. The fair takes place annually on the weekend before Thanksgiving and attracts 60,000 people to the fairgrounds

Longevity in versatility by
Chris Shanahan
PHOTOGRAPHY By
JIM CRAIGMYLE
People often ask Joseph Capicotto how he makes ends meet as a full-time professional artist. His answer, in a word, is versatility. The Vaughan painter speaks of how being flexible and adaptable in terms of both style, technique and subject matter has helped him carve out a rewarding art career spanning more than three decades. “Staying versatile is probably one of the most important things,” Mr. Capicotto says of how he avoids the starving artist syndrome. “I’m changing my styles and subject matter all the time…. And it’s the new work that I do that ends up taking off.” At any given point, the artist’s studio houses more than 10 varied works-inprogress, ranging from landscapes and 56

figurative pieces to abstracts. “It keeps me busy and helps to keep my income steady,” he says. The 48-year-old artist has embraced change throughout his career. He started off doing easy-to-interpret work such as landscapes and basic figures, but has seen his self-taught technique evolve and develop significantly over the years. He sees similarities in the growth of his own work to the progression of music icons such as The Beatles. The band began with simple pop hits like She Loves You and Twist and Shout, however gradually matured and advanced into much more complex musical compositions. Similarly, Mr. Capicotto’s acrylics are now
aimed at a more sophisticated eye, requiring the viewer to interpret and find their own meaning within. “The images that are in the paintings are not as obvious anymore,” Mr. Capicotto says. “You have to really look at them to fully understand.
“The texture, colours and tones combine to give that final big picture,” explains Mr. Capicotto, a natural storyteller who also attaches short original poems to the back of each original work. “This is so each viewer can connect with it in their own way.” While versatility of style and subject is key to success, Mr. Capicotto stresses each individual image must be of a high quality. With buyers typically spending several thousand dollars on an original, it’s essential for the artist’s passion and talent to show through. Buyers can tell if you didn’t put your heart and soul into a piece, he says. His advice to beginning artists is to network and become as socially interactive as possible. For Mr. Capicotto, this includes donating as many as 10 original paintings annually to various local and international charities and fundraising initiatives. “It’s great exposure and they remember me,” he says, noting such charitable endeavours get his name and work out there among corporate heads, actors and sports personalities—people who buy art. The Woodbridge resident and father of three began his art career by painting portraits and creating fresco murals throughout Vaughan. In the past 10 years, he has worked on canvas and has sold into an impressive list of private and public collections. Capicotto originals
are available in galleries throughout North America and have been added to an elite roster of international artists at the Hazelton Gallery in Toronto’s trendy Yorkville shopping district. Mr. Capicotto favours putty knives, sponges and other artist instruments over traditional
paintbrushes. His creative inspiration comes from many sources including the beauty in life, nature and living.

Painting with glass by
Chris Shanahan
PHOTOGRAPHY By
JIM CRAIGMYLE
Laureen Lucas views herself as an artist who just happens to paint with glass instead of oils or watercolours. The Stouffville resident takes on the creative persona of a painter when making original stained glass works ranging from door panels and windows to lamps and sun catchers. “To me it’s like painting with glass because there’s such a variety in colour, texture and design. When you combine them all, it brings it all together… and there are limitless possibilities to create,” Ms Lucas says. “Stained glass is an art form dependent on your creative ability. And it’s very important to me that the creativity is reflected in the end work.” As a former creative director in an inhouse art department, Ms Lucas decided to turn a long-time glass hobby into a business when she relocated from Unionville to Stouffville in 2006. She has always enjoyed working with her hands on projects from woodworking to home renovations, so making the move to full-time stained glass artist was a natural extension of her deeprooted creative instincts. “The appeal to me in working with stained glass is the ability to be creative,” she says, noting she very much enjoys the artistic process. “I love to be able to create a work of art that someone can be very pleased and proud of…. I just like the challenge of being creative and creating new projects.” Her own abilities and expertise have increased significantly since she started working with glass full-time. For the past six years, Ms Lucas has used her Second St. Studio as a home base to run a multi-faceted arts business. An in-house studio allows her to create commissioned stained glass pieces for local homes and businesses and also to host regular teaching classes. When creating a custom design for a window panel or door insert, Ms Lucas first visits her clients at their home or business to get a visual sense and feel for the job. Design choices run from traditional to contemporary and careful attention to 58

detail ensures a glass piece will enhance the client’s existing décor. “I love what I’m doing. I take a lot of pride in my work,” she says, calling stained glass “an artwork investment” that adds longterm value to any home or office.
Ms Lucas is a fixture at many local arts events including the annual WhitchurchStouffville Studio Tour & Sale, held in October. Past tour visitors have been impressed by the artist’s work, posting online comments
such as: “The minute we walked into your studio we saw some of your work and talent and knew we were in the right place. You knew right away what we had in mind and came up with a stunning design....The finished piece now hangs in our home and
is much admired by all.” For more information, contact Laureen Lucas at 905-640-6034 or email llucas@sympatico.ca. To view original artwork by Ms Lucas and other local artists, visit stouffville studiotour.com.

ProfilE: 404 VETERINARY EMERGENCY AND REFERRAL HOSPITAL
404 VETERINARY EMERGENCY AND REFERRAL HOSPITAL Newmarket’s 404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital operates very much like a human health care facility. The only real difference is that the patients are pets and not people. According to hospital co-owners and husband-and-wife veterinary team Dr. Joanne Fagnou and Dr. Kevin Isakow, many local residents remain unaware that they have access to a specialty care and emergency practice right in their own York Region backyard. This modern, 10,000-square-foot facility offers services ranging from complex orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries to che-
motherapy and hydrotherapy, she says. The 404 hospital recently relocated to 510 Harry Walker Parkway South and now offers 24-7 emergency care. A well-established surgical referral practice is at the heart of the hospital and features two board-certified surgery specialists, hospital co-owner Dr. Kevin Isakow, and staff surgeon Dr. Agatha Kisiel. Among three operating rooms is one suite designed specifically for soft tissue procedures. Staff surgeon Dr. Agatha Kisiel has a special interest in minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopy, a technique that eliminates the need to make a large

incision and instead uses a smaller “port hole”. A second suite is used for orthopedics, (by far the busiest department in the hospital) while the third is designed for neurosurgery. In addition to the surgery unit, the hospital has separate departments featuring veterinary specialists in internal medicine, cardiology and dermatology and has one of the most well equipped rehabilitation departments in the country. The 404’s impressive arsenal of diagnostic equipment features a 64-slice CT unit, allowing for fast and detailed imaging—so fast pets can often be imaged with only

light sedation, without the need for general anesthesia. It’s the first of its kind in Canada being used for veterinary purposes and is available for use around the clock. The experienced husband-and-wife veterinary team realizes animal emergencies don’t always happen on weekends or after supper on a weeknight. While a primary care veterinarian is always a pet owner’s first point of contact when an emergency arises, the 404 is always available as the only 24\7 emergency facility in the region. The 404 is also the only hospital in York Region to have surgery specialists available 24/7 to perform emergency surgeries, putting the most skilled hands in the operating room for instances where pets often need them the most. “Our emergency services take no holidays,” says Dr. Fagnou, noting her hospital staff includes 12 vets and about 40 support personnel. Having all their emergency, referral and specialty services under one roof avoids fragmentation and allows everyone to work together on a common mission: to help the people and pets of York Region. “Our emergency vets have ready access to the expertise of board-certified specialists in surgery, internal medicine, cardiology and dermatology” she explains. “And also all of the great diagnostic equipment
that comes with them, such as ultrasound, digital radiology (x-rays), endoscopy and computed tomography (CT), just to name a few. “Our digital radiography and CT images can be sent for interpretation by boardcertified veterinary radiologists 24/7/365, with STAT interpretation available within 30 minutes.” The 404 clinic began in 2004 with Drs. Fagnou and Isakow operating out of a small facility in Aurora. As the hospital grew and evolved over the years, it became clear to the operators that a new practice model was necessary to provide optimal, on-going patient care and client service. The move to new high-tech premises in Newmarket was necessary to allow for 24-hour emergency care that now complements their existing specialty services. The hospital’s website, 404vet.com, features many touching testimonials and case studies documenting the remarkable recovery and rehabilitation of a variety of pets and other animals. One involves Bailey, owned by Drs. Fagnou and Isakow. Bailey sustained an injury to her Achilles tendon requiring surgical repair at the age of 7. Seeking to educate herself on the techniques and science behind repair and strengthening damaged tendon, Dr.
Fagnou enrolled in the University of Tennessee’s certification course in canine rehabilitation, becoming fully certified in 2006. The hospital now houses Bailey’s Place, a one-of-a-kind hydrotherapy centre for use in fitness, wellness and rehabilitation programs tailored by Dr. Fagnou and other vets certified in canine rehab. As a community service, hospital doctors also treat injured wildlife at no charge.

With a chart-topping gold certified single to its credit and the honour of touring with two of the biggest pop bands of this generation, Neverest has tasted its fair share of success since its 2010 debut EP. With plans to release a full length album in 2014 the Canadian pop-rock band is hungry for even greater success—and will be counting on support from their loyal fans from York Region and beyond. The band’s journey began in 2007 when former Aurora resident, Spyros “Spee” Chalkiotis, signed 62

on as part of a development deal to put together a band. After a relentless search, the right combination of talent was assembled in 2010 and the group known as Neverest was formed. “At the beginning, we rehearsed a lot and spent a lot of time together so we could gel as a unit and also musically,” says Mr. Chalkiotis, a former Cardinal Carter student. “We practised 12 hours a days for six months prior to going on tour together.”
“We’re so blessed because we get to do something that we’ve dreamed of since we were little kids.” He still recalls their excitement when they first heard their single, About Us, on the radio while on a promotional tour in Red Deer, Alberta. “Hearing that song for the very first time gave us an overwhelming amount of joy and accomplishment,” says Mr. Chalkiotis about the debut single, which reached Number 1 on the MuchMusic Countdown and later became gold certified. “As a group, we were all very proud of each other.” A key person involved in the group’s success has been their manager and renowned Backstreet Boy member, Howie Dorough. “Before we released our first single, the Backstreet Boys were in Toronto and we had the chance to play for him acoustically and he loved it,” Paul Loduca, a long-time Aurora resident who joined the band in 2010, explains. “That solidified his partnership with us.” The partnership with Mr. Dorough gave Neverest the opportunity to open up for the New Kids On The Block and the Backstreet Boys when they teamed up for their Canadian tour. “We got to play some of our favourite arenas, like the Air Canada Centre,” Mr. Chalkiotis says. “Places we always dreamed of growing up.” Mr. Loduca recalls realizing another dream when their band was asked to perform the Canadian national anthem at the 2011 NBA All-Star game in Orlando, Fla. “While we were singing, we could see Drake, who was like the only other musician from Toronto and he was standing on his chair and pretending to conduct us,” Mr. Loduca recounts with a chuckle. “Afterwards, we got to meet him and Lil Wayne, which was incredible.” While Neverest band members are proud to represent Canada internationally, they are also proud of their strong ties to Aurora. “A lot of times the guys would come over, and we would rehearse acoustically in my house,” Mr. Loduca says “We might even make a lot of noise, but instead of calling the police, some of my neighbours would come over just to let us know how much they like our music,” says the Neverest bassist with a laugh. “In all sincerity, the support that we’ve received from the community has been incredible.”

The barbering biz runs in Dino Caracciolo’s blood. A licensed barber in Kleinburg and owner of Crown Shaving Co. natural line of men’s grooming products, Mr. Caracciolo grew up in his family’s salons watching his father and uncles do shaves and cuts. When he’s not giving expert shaves to the men of Vaughan, he’s working on expanding Crown Shaving Co.’s availability across Canada and the United States.
What brought your attention from haircutting and barbering to developing products? I had been working in the family business since graduating from beauty school at 18 and suddenly I developed allergic reactions to products I used every day. Having to step away made me realize the need to create products that would not irritate, so I worked on formulating a natural line packaged to appeal to the modern man. Crown Shaving Co. supreme grooming products was born. I’m proud to say it’s local and made right here in Vaughan. We’re available online at crownshavingco.com and 23 stores across North America.
Tell us about your shop in Kleinburg. This is where we do Crown Shaving Co. research and development and work with the product on our clients. We opened three years ago with the vision to establish a community barbershop where men could drop in with their sons on a Saturday and get a shave and a cut as they chat with their neighbours and have a coffee. Kleinburg is a fantastic community and has a special connection to our history.
What’s the biggest grooming mistake men make? They rush! I remember watching my grandfather spend 20 minutes in front of the mirror shaving with a smoke in his mouth. It was an enjoyable ritual. Many men say they don’t like shaving, but if they took an extra 10 minutes to prep and enjoy the ritual, they would see the results. Even if in a rush, get in the shower with hot water and then go to the sink and lather up and you’ll get the best shave of your life. It’s all about the preparation.
What should guys tell their barber? Take time to explain what you want and show a photograph. A good barber will be able to tell if the style will work with your hair, so trust their opinion. And don’t be late for your appointment.
is there a grooming detail men constantly overlook? Moisturizing is a big one. Skin takes a beating and a good aftershave lotion will help take care of your face. Also, don’t wait for your next appointment to groom nose hairs and eyebrows. You can do it at home with facial scissors and a comb to keep things tidy and presentable.
Who’s an example of a well-groomed man? George Clooney. He’s one of those guys that if he’s wearing a beard, it’s neatly groomed and his hair is always perfectly cropped. Men should pick up a GQ or Sharp magazine to stay on trend with what’s new in grooming and the latest hairstyles.
What’s one product to have in the bathroom cabinet? A quality lubricating shaving cream goes a long way. If you’re using the crappy stuff you’re not giving your skin the protection it needs and risk nicks and rashes. Fall 2013

Fall 2013
1. Get prepped
4. Battle of the blade
Wet your face with warm water to soften beard hair and open pores. Mr. Caracciolo suggests shaving right after a shower or applying a moistened warm towel to the face for a few minutes before you begin.
Lightly rub a pre-shave oil on your face and neck prior to shaving cream to protect skin and allow the razor to glide gently, reducing the chance of nicks, cuts and razor burn.
There is nothing worse than dragging a cold piece of dull steel across your face, so always use a sharp blade. Mr. Caracciolo suggests shaving in the direction of beard growth (with the grain), to avoid irritation and ingrown hairs. Rinse the blade under hot water before you begin and after every couple of strokes. If you dare to get as smooth as possible, go for a second pass, against the grain this time, using light pressure and short strokes. Finish with a cold rinse of water and gently pat skin dry.
3. lather up
5. Protect
With a brush or fingers, gently massage a lubricating shave cream onto your face and neck to help the beard hair stand up away from the skin for a closer and more comfortable shave.
Nourish and protect freshly shaven skin with a light, non-greasy aftershave lotion.
2. Pre-shave

Fall 2013
If you’ve ever driven your car
through an intersection and then wondered if the light was red, you know how easy it is to get lost in your thoughts. With the mad rush to get to work, get home from work, put dinner on the table, chauffeur children around and complete a multitude of other daily tasks, you might be excused for sometimes failing to live in the present moment. But that lack of awareness could catch up with you one day. That was the case for East Gwillimbury resident Darlene Nicholson. A registered nurse, Ms Nicholson says she spent many years of her life trying to control everyone and everything. At 45, she was running a successful foot-care business and working up to 60 hours a week. “I was angry, judgmental and domineering in my home life,” she says. “To the outside world I appeared confident and successful, but deep down I was depressed, insecure, lost and very alone.” Ms Nicholson says the stress caused her to burn out and become sick. “My life as I knew it fell apart,” she says. “It was only through years of counselling, personal growth workshops and the practices of yoga and meditation that I began to create a more satisfying and joyful life.” Ms Nicholson discovered Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The program incorporates meditation and gentle yoga to reduce stress and promote healing. In a society that often focuses on material wealth, Ms Nicholson says mindful meditation can help you pay more attention to your inner voice rather than being driven by “wants.” She is now a certified kripalu and yin yoga teacher and has completed professional training with Dr. Kabat-Zinn. She acknowledges many people, women in particular, find it difficult to carve out time for meditation each day. “Twenty minutes of time in this crazy, busy world is almost impossible, and that’s sad,” she says. “There are so many demands on us and we often put ourselves last. To create a life that has meaning, we need to put ourselves first.” While meditation and yoga are key to MBSR, proponents say mindfulness extends beyond these scheduled opportunities.
Darlene Nicholson (left) says mindful meditation has helped here to create a more joyful life. Cheryl Crosby (above), a nutritionist and yoga and meditation teacher, says mindfulness promotes better life choices—including what she eats.
“Mindfulness means paying attention in the present moment with compassionate awareness and acceptance,” Ms Nicholson explains. “For me, as I often find myself rushing through life, mindfulness is a reminder to slow down, be more aware of where I am going, who I am with and what I am doing.” Cheryl Crosby, a Richmond Hill yoga and meditation teacher, says mindfulness has become a way of life for her.
“From the moment I wake up, I try to be more aware of my current circumstances— how I feel, my surroundings and the thoughts that bombard me. From there on, it is making an effort to ‘wake up’ to each moment of my life as it is presented to me, without resistance.” Ms Crosby left the world of marketing in 1983 to focus on sharing healing practices with others. She too participated in training with Dr. Kabat-Zinn. Fall 2013

“Mindfulness means paying attention in the present moment with compassionate awareness and acceptance.”
“I am now more aware of my thoughts so that I can step back from them and make more careful choices about which thoughts I choose to believe,” she notes. “This provides much more freedom, because my thoughts don’t have as much control over me.” As a nutritionist, Ms Crosby says mindfulness can have a profound impact on our food choices as well. “Through being more mindful, I have become more aware of foods that my body doesn’t respond well to. I am also aware of what thoughts bring me to that place of standing in front of the refrigerator with the door open when I am not hungry,” she says. Students of mindful meditation report benefits such as coping more effectively with stress, experiencing greater energy and enthusiasm for life, lasting improvements in psychological and physical well-being and a deeper appreciation for self and others. A 2010 Harvard Medical School study suggests MBSR is associated with increases in grey matter concentration in brain regions involved in learning and memory processes, emotion regulation, self-referential processing and perspective taking. The University of Calgary’s Dr. Linda Carlson has been studying the effects of mindfulness on psychological and biological functioning in cancer patients since 1997. One of her recent studies shows practising mindfulness may help breast cancer patients better cope with their diagnoses. Study participants who completed an MBSR program experienced less mood disturbance and fewer self-reported health symptoms related to stress. Ms Nicholson says while she still experiences moments of stress in her life, she is now better able to cope. “I am more comfortable in my own skin and I feel more content and accepting of life as it is. By practising mindfulness meditation, I have learned to be more present as well as less judgmental, more patient, more open and curious and able to see things from a new perspective.” Ms Nicholson cautions that mindfulness is not a quick fix—it takes practice and perseverance. But the payoff is worth it, she says. “Through mindfulness, we can move from a place of just existing to really living.” 72

for beginners
While the idea of meditation can be intimidating for many, mindful meditation teacher Darlene Nicholson says you’re not expected to “quiet” your mind, only to acknowledge your thoughts and not be disturbed by them. “There’s always going to be stress and fluctuating emotions,” she says. “The goal in mindfulness is to watch, to witness, rather than getting lost in our thoughts.” Instructor Cheryl Crosby suggests these easy steps for beginners: • As soon as you wake and before you go to sleep, close your eyes and become aware of your breath for a few moments. • Notice what thoughts, sensations, emotions and sounds show up in your awareness. If you get lost in any of those, come back to being aware of the breath. • Even just two minutes in the morning and before you go to sleep can make a difference in your life. schedule self care by
JenniFer ettinger
The crisp feeling of fall is in the air. It is a season that calls for change and an honest review of our habits. A post on social media, advising us to “stop the glorification of busy” caught my eye recently. Fall is second only to the holiday season when it comes to “to dos”. How about thinking of fall as an opportunity to schedule time for self care? Why is it we fill our calendars and smartphones with endless activities but no time for nurturing, supporting and comforting ourselves? We know we need to embrace self care, but truly do we do it? And why not? We are always in a crisis, coming out of a crisis or know someone in a crisis. Understanding this, if we put our health and self care at the top of the list, we can deal with life’s issues and the “busyness” in a much more effective manner. Taking time for some form of exercise will offer you the benefits of stronger cardiovascular health, improved weight management and increased circulation. Simply taking a walk on the trails or around your neighbourhood on a consistent basis can give you these benefits Stress release techniques, such as conscious breathing, slows us down, releases toxin and positively impacts our mental health. Water is a topic I speak about often. Why? What happens when you don’t water a plant? Its cells are not nourished and it dies. 74

It is the same for our bodies. Water nourishes, cleanses and detoxes the body and improves the skin. You may find you don’t reach for food as often when your body is properly hydrated. hoMe How is your personal space looking these days? If your car, house, purse or office space (including email) is in need of a clean up, now is the time to tackle it. When we have a healthy and orderly work place, free of physical clutter, we can be more effective in our work and in our decision-making. We tend to overeat, reach for sugar-laden foods or caffeine when surrounded by an overload of clutter and demands. In the kitchen, get rid of expired foods and those that don’t serve the body, such as white sugar and flour. Why not recruit a friend and have a “detox” day. Pick an area of your house that needs attention, such as a seasonal closet or kitchen pantry. You can work on editing and purging while having some bonding time with your friend; then return the favour. BeaUty Your beauty routine needs to be modified as well. It is time to put your favourite summer products away (check the dates and dispose of them if needed). Don’t forgo your SPF but seek out a heavier moisturizer and foundation to match the cooler and drier air. Replace your mascara to prevent any bacteria concerns from old products. FaMiLy With the juggling of extracurricular activities, many families face emergencies over, “What should we have for dinner?” Put together an action plan so the drive-thru does not become your only source for family food choices. Fall is the perfect time to buy local apples, artichokes, arugula, beets and squash. Bring out your slow cooker and prep in the morning so that you will have a meal ready by dinner time. Why not view the season as an opportunity to welcome change, like a child who is preparing for the first day of school, excited to have new tools and anticipating the year to come. Embrace the season and take advantage of the suggestions to become a healthier and happier you. Jennifer Ettinger is a fitness and style expert. For more information, visit fityourstyle.com.

CONSUMER FEATURE: ERTHCOVERINGS STONE VENEERS
Ivan Rapa, President of ErthCOVERINGS (pictured with Silver Fox Strips).
ERTH COVERINGS Stone veneers have a history almost as long as humanity’s - the pyramids in Giza once sparkled a bright white thanks to polished Tura limestone veneers, and the Colosseum in Rome was decked out in decadent marble. The look has always denoted a feeling of luxurious indulgence - and has carried on through the centuries as a favourite material of designers and architects. However, adding geologic glamour to a home has long been a challenge. The high price of having heavy raw materials delivered, combined with the extra fees of having skilled labourers cut and install it safely, once made the aesthetic a

cost-prohibitive one to achieve. Some companies tried to take advantage of the market gap by offering DIY-friendly faux stone veneers, but they have never been able to replicate the look and feel of real stone. Enter ErthCOVERINGS, a distributor of thinly-sliced real stone veneers - and the first company of its kind in Canada. ErthCOVERINGS was established in 2002 by Ivan Rapa. A building renovator by trade, Rapa lived most of his life in Australia, and made Canada his new home in 1998. On a return visit to Australia in 2002, Rapa was impressed by a new light weight stone covering product. Upon returning home, he discovered that the product was unavailable in Canada, and in late 2002 he succeeded in bringing the first container of product to the country. Since 2002, the company
has evolved into a North American leader in the distribution of high quality, natural stone veneers. ErthCOVERINGS distributes an unmatched variety and range of stone lines in designerfriendly shades and shapes. The panels and tiles are adaptable for interior and exterior uses on walls, hardscape features or as flooring, and are diverse enough to fit into any decor scheme - rustic or contemporary, classic or modern. “We originally started out with more of a rustic stone feel, which more people are attracted to for cottages. With our newer lines, we’re developing products to fit the modern decor needs of today’s homes,” says Marketing Manager and Purchasing Agent Sonia Der-Boghossian. ErthCOVERINGS’ most popular series are their 3D and Ledgestone panels, and their exclusive strip series - another innovation first brought to Canada by Rapa and his team. “The 3D panels are a very good fit and create a uniform look on the wall. It’s one of the original panels the company started with, and still one of our best selling,” says DerBoghossian. “They can be adapted to any colour scheme, blend well, and are seamless, so it gives the look of a full stone wall, even though the veneer is only about two inches thick. It’s one of the styles most people gravitate towards. “ She suggests that those with modern homes should consider the popular strip series in marble or sandstone - an easy way to add a sleek, contemporary feel to your space. “The strips are very clean, very streamlined, and are available in five versatile colours. The strips come in individual pieces, all straight cut and straight faced, so they provide more of a polished tile finish. It’s like a 3D rectangle as opposed to a rugged mountainous look,” says Der-Boghossian.“We find they’re used a lot for feature walls or fireplaces that have electrical or gas inserts. We’ve also used it on commercial lobbies and elevator surrounds because it’s very clean looking. We see it a lot on commercial installations. It’s all natural stone, it will stand up forever - all of our products have lifetime warranties.”

Those with a flair for the dramatic, or those looking to add a unique feature or focal point to their home would be hard pressed to find anything more standout than Giovanni Barbieri’s collection - distributed in Canada exclusively by ErthCOVERINGS. Giovanni Barbieri is a world renowned, award-winning Italian natural stone and glass artisan. He specializes in crafting exceptionally stunning, one of a kind natural stone tiles and veneers. ErthCOVERINGS also offers a wide range of hand-made glass tile in seven colours. “It’s very cool, and something we haven’t seen in the Canadian market,” says Der-Boghossian. “The glass is hand-poured, and then a colour is swirled into it. Each piece has a unique design, and when it’s put together it looks really striking. We often see it as a backsplash or bathroom accent, or used as a feature wall.”
In January 2014, ErthCOVERINGS will be launching a new porcelain line, and will continue to expand their range of products within the new year. ErthCOVERINGS is unique in the fact that their materials are created from the rough-cut marble or limestone that remains after countertops and other geometric surfaces are shaved off. “We go out of our way to find suppliers who have off-cut material. The leftover materials are reporposed, and we take the smaller pieces and put them into panels,” says Der-Boghossian. “It’s environmentally friendly and sustainable. If we don’t use it, it would be wasted material.” The method also precludes harvesting new stone from the earth, a process that is not only expensive, but has long-term costs on the environment as well. And when it comes to the environment, all
ErthCOVERINGS products are tested for weather, absorption rates, and sun exposure, from negative temperatures up to 30 degrees. Everything – mortor, cement, everything - is tested, and it doesn’t fade. It’s made for weather in Canada. An added bonus: the panels and strips are easy to install, and often don’t require professionals. “We compare the installation to installing a tile backsplash, just on a larger scale,” says DerBoghossian. “If you’ve ever installed tile in a bathroom, you can install our panels.” A fireplace or a 60sq. ft. wall can be installed within hours, and – factoring in drying time afterwards – most projects can be done in a day. Why delay turning your home into a showpiece your friends and neighbours will envy? ErthCOVERINGS products are available at select retailers across Canada. For more information, visit their website to locate a dealer.

Of all the countries in the world, there is only one that is, without a doubt, on everyone’s bucket list.
wanting more PHOTOGRAPHY BY
BY Bart Card soUth aUstraLian toUrisM CoMMission AND Bart Card
Those lucky enough to visit this vast and beautiful country return home with a sense of wonder, awe and culture. Everyone has seen the tourism ads featuring beautiful friendly people, blue skies, vast open spaces and a unique abundance of flora and fauna— usually accompanied by a theme song featuring at least one didgeridoo. Most people would think these ads look just a little too good to be true. When it comes to Australia, I can honestly say, they are completely true. Known for its uniqueness, a number of tag lines usually accompany conversation about this dry and vast country. Those tag lines go something like this: All of the world’s most poisonous snakes are Australian. It is the only country that is also a continent. It is the least populous nation (per square kilometre) in the world. There are more than 150 million sheep in Australia and only some 20 million people. And, last but not least, Australia is the fourth largest exporter of wine in the world. As a young man I lived in Australia for four years, helping to build the railroad that now connects Sydney to Perth. Since that time I have been lucky enough to visit many times. Despite all of the time I have spent in this magical country, I have still not had my fill and have certainly not seen all there is to see. Unless you are a backpacker with months to spare, Australia is much too vast to tackle in one trip. On my most recent adventure I had the pleasure of visiting South Australia, exploring the Great Ocean Road, Melbourne and the wineries that are speckled in between. Planning a trip to Australia can be overwhelming. Most people dream of exploring this fantastic destination, but are scared off by the flight or the sheer size of the country. The first decision that must be made is where to go. Then the question becomes how do I get there? There are several ways to get to Australia. On this particular trip, I took American Airlines from Toronto to New York then Qantas to Los Angeles. From there it is a direct flight to Sydney then on to Melbourne. Although getting there can be relatively harrowing, in the end it is always worth the trip. Fall 2013

I arrived in Melbourne and checked in to Sofitel Melbourne. After such a long trip, I took the rest of the day to catch up on some much needed sleep. The next morning I made my way to Federation Square for a walking tour of Melbourne. Known as one of the world’s most livable cities, Melbourne has a unique culture of fashion, food, sport and entertainment. With a deep history and heritage, the city celebrates the arts are through a plethora of museums and galleries. If walking isn’t your thing, Real Melbourne Bike Tours offers guided cycling in and around the city. In a few hours you can see more than most see in days. From a bike you can soak up the atmosphere and explore the bohemian backstreets, lively markets cafes, hidden arcades, bike paths and bluestone laneways. After a few days in Melbourne, we were off to start the second leg of our tour. Melbourne is the gateway to regional Victoria, which offers a myriad of opportunities in a very compact and accessible area. Deserts, alpine ski resorts, mighty rivers, great lakes, wildlife and the unparalleled spectacle and beauty of the world renowned Great Ocean Road, Victoria is all about quality experiences. Many of the state’s regional attractions, including valleys of vineyards and international surf beaches, are less than a two-hour drive from Melbourne. But with more time to spare, the entire state offers a variety of scenic routes ideal for self-drive and personalized tours. In the morning, we packed our gear and headed to Mornington Peninsula for a horseback winery tour. It was spectacular. We rode through the beautiful vineyard region of Red Hill, stopping only to taste some of Australia’s finest wines and enjoy a gourmet barbecue by the lake. The day was complete when we arrived at Peninsula Hot Springs for a well-deserved soak. Our next stop was a walking tour of the Twelve Apostles. One of Australia’s most recognizable natural features, the Twelve Apostles were formed by harsh weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually eroding the soft limestone below and forming caves in the cliffs. Eventually these caves became arches that in turn collapsed, leaving rock stacks that measure up to 45 metres in height. The site was known as the Sow and Piglets until 1922 and was renamed the Twelve Apostles for tourism purposes, even though there have only ever been nine stacks. 80

From the Twelve Apostles, we boarded a helicopter for a tour over the Great Ocean Road. Listed as an Australian National Heritage Site, the 243-kilometre stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia connects the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool. The road was built by soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and is the world’s largest war memorial dedicated to casualties of the First World War. It is an important tourist attraction in the region and winds through varying terrain alongside the coast and provides access to several prominent landmarks. The aweinspiring flight over some of Australia’s most beautiful scenery really provides a unique perspective and is highly recommended for anyone hoping to truly experience this vast landscape. After a few wonderful days of walking, biking, riding and flying, I was certainly ready for the next portion of the trip—wineries in the Adelaide Hills. Driving from Melbourne to Adelaide, we stopped for lunch at the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld and I was not disappointed. The Royal Mail Hotel is a unique rural destination set among native gardens and fruit orchards with stunning views of the Southern Gramians Ranges.

Fall 2013
Accommodations, an award-winning restaurant and wine cellar, café, public bar, conference facilities and the historic Mount Sturgeon Estate and homestead are all available to explore and enjoy. That night we checked into the Boroka Downs, in Halls Gap, located approximately halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide. The Boroka Downs offers truly five-star selfcontained accommodations. There are just five architecturally designed luxurious and exclusive residences with sweeping views of the surrounding nature. In the morning I opened the curtains and was greeted by a troop of kangaroos. You can’t get much more Australian than that. After a few more days in the Adelaide Hills, we made our way into the city. After checking in to the Adelaide Hilton, I spent the afternoon exploring the Adelaide Central Market. Buzzing with sounds, colours and wondrous smells, the market is truly a destination for food lovers. It is no secret that I love outdoor markets and have visited some of the world’s best. Adelaide did not disappoint. In addition to fresh fruit and vegetables, the market offers a great variety of meat and fish along with gourmet specialties. Our stay in Adelaide was short-lived; the next day we were back on the road headed for Kingsford Homestead, a stunning 1856 two-storey sandstone Georgian homestead that has been superbly renovated and is now home to seven luxury suites. We woke early and headed to the Barossa Valley. With quality food and wine, an abundance of wildlife and spectacular postcard scenery around every bend, the Barossa is the heart of Australia’s wine industry, the home to gourmet delights and an area blessed with a rich cultural heritage.

The Barossa thrives on a living heritage, food markets, quality wines, old preserved buildings and a wealth of culinary pleasures. There is a strong sense of cultural identity and community spirit that adds to the appeal of the region. While working in the Outback as a young man, I drank a lot of wine. I vividly remember the mornings when we would wake up in the heat and regret all the cheap wine we had consumed the night before. I did not have the chance, in my younger days, to visit the Barossa or the wineries it is now famous for; luckily that all changed on this trip. Once in the Barossa, we were accompanied by John Baldwin, a wine specialist tour guide and owner of Barossa Daimler Tours. Mr. Baldwin’s extensive local knowledge, uncanny ability to recognize individual tastes and restored 1957 Bentley made for a fantastic experience I will not soon forget. We spent the morning visiting Yalumba Wines for a tour and wine tasting. Samuel Smith founded Yalumba in 1849 after purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land. Six generations and more than 150 years later, Yalumba, Australia’s oldest familyowned winery, remains one of the most popular wineries with tourists because of its beautiful landscaped gardens and clock tower (circa 1906).
The Barossa Valley wine region is home to more than 150 wineries.

In the afternoon we made our way to Penfolds for a make-your-own-blend experience. Acting as winemakers for an hour, we tried our hands at making wine. were off again, this time to Kangaroo Island. We were met by a representative from Exceptional Kangaroo Island Tours who accompanied us on a full day of touring. The island is one of Australia’s great natural wonders, as well as one of its best and most surprising tourism destinations. It’s a wildlife sanctuary without fences, where visitors
can see Australian animals in their natural habitat. Around 30 per cent of the island is protected as parks and its 541-kilometre coastline offers excellent swimming and surfing beaches, a spot where visitors can walk among sea lions, spectacular cliffs and amazing rock formations such as Remarkable Rocks.

The island also has a growing reputation as a food and wine region, renowned especially for its honey, eucalyptus oil and sheep dairy farms. While on Kangaroo Island, we stayed at the Southern Ocean Lodge. Designed to float amongst the dramatic coastal beauty of the island’s southwest coast, the world-class lodge offers unrivalled luxury in a uniquely Australian setting. Organic-luxe suites feature lavish sleeping areas, sunken lounge, glass walled ensuite and breathtaking ocean vistas. Planning a trip to Australia can at first be overwhelming and somewhat ominous. The travel time and sheer size of this great nation is often all it takes to dissuade perspective visitors. If I have any advice, it is to identify what you want to do, research where to do it and then focus on one region or location. This will allow you to fully experience the people, culture and feel of a place, without ever being overwhelmed or stressed. It is impossible to experience the whole country in one trip, but if you plan properly, there will always be a reason to return.
