lot has changed in the nearly five decades since Dr. Rene Rodriguez began practicing medicine. A native of Guatemala, Dr. Rodriguez has called Corpus Christi home for most of his adult life, working as a primary care physician who specializes in senior care.
One thing that didn’t change much during his career was the way the healthcare system promoted an acute, emergent model of care. Patients were more likely to be seen when they were sick or in an emergency, rather than working with their healthcare team on a plan to stay well or manage chronic disease. For Dr. Rodriguez, that all changed a few years ago when he joined WellMed and helped launch the senior healthcare company’s expansion in the Coastal Bend, first as an associate medical director and now as lead physi2 | www.goodlife-mag.com

The winds of change are blowing. And although Fall officially began on September 22nd, we all know that in South Texas it doesn’t feel like Fall until much later. But just when we think we can’t take another day of the stifling heat, there it is. Our first cold front. There is something refreshing and renewing about that first cold front. That’s what this magazine has been for me; both refreshing and renewing. And the timing couldn’t have been better.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the premiere issue of GoodLife Magazine.

To help you as you strive to create a “good life” for yourselves and your families. I am excited to share this journey with you and hope that you will find some valuable tips, inspiration and resources each month. LIVE. LIFE. WELL. D’Lyn Suggs

HealthyHolidays! Written By Tara Bomar
L
et’s face it, holidays are fun, but overindulgences can leave us tired, bloated, and nutritionally starved. Studies have shown weight gain to increase over the holidays, and half that weight will stay around until summer. Yikes! Here are some strategies to help you feel great while still enjoying all the holiday festivities you love:
1. EAT A HEALTHY MEAL BEFORE THE PARTY. Lots of water and a high protein meal is a good choice. This will keep you full and allow you to have better control over your choices. Don’t follow the ‘I am saving my calories’ mistake, it WILL backfire! If you show up famished, your blood sugar will be low, and you can guarantee you will binge on the buffet. If you happen to arrive hungry, drink at least 2 cups of water before chowing down.
always focus on it. We struggle with an internal battle of making good choices and not allowing ANY food restrictions. Food restrictions tend to have a negative affect, and the next thing we know we are eating everything we shouldn’t. Instead, survey the table and decide which treats you would like and come up with a plan (save your calories for foods you love). This may take the form of a small piece of cake or a few unhealthy appetizers.
2. ALLOW SMALL INDULGENCES. Unfortunately, during the holidays we are overly exposed to unhealthy foods which causes our minds to
3. PORTION CONTROL. Use a plate instead of continuously picking at the buffet. This will help you see just how much food you are
12 | www.goodlife-mag.com
4. BE MINDFUL. Pay attention to what you are consuming. This sounds a little obvious, but many times we get busy socializing and start mindlessly eating. We don’t realize how much food or alcohol we have indulged in. Also, be aware of how your food choices make you feel. At the end of each day, evaluate the decisions you made and how your body reacted. Ask yourself the tough questions, Does this food taste better than how you currently feel? Are you proud of your food choices? Are your choices helping you towards your health goals? 5. STAY ACTIVE. Spend each morning doing at least 20 minutes of physical activity. Make it part of your morning routine to help burn calories and set your day
with positive momentum. Working out will also eliminate some of the holiday stress which usually leads to overindulgence. 6. DRINK WATER. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. This will give you an energy boost, alleviate stress, and help refrain from overeating. It is the easiest way to help our bodies mentally and physically, yet we forget to make it a priority.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
eating. Focus on nutritional food first so you have less space to load on empty calories. First, try loading half of your plate with greens, then add the protein (aim for skinless pieces if you can find them), finish up with the seasonal favs.
The most important thing is to be patient with yourself. If you didn’t make the best choices, make tomorrow better. Remember, there is more to holidays than food, so focus on soaking up the ones you love. Practice moderation, be mindful, and enjoy yourself. Does that spot on your foot
NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION? By Cynthia Hemesath, DPM
How can you tell if that spot on your foot needs to be seen by a Podiatrist? There are a few simple questions you need to ask yourself. Does it itch? Does the spot have scalloped or irregular borders? Does the color of the spot appear lighter or darker in the middle compared to the border? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should call your Podiatrist for evaluation of the lesion. Living in the South Texas Coastal area, you may notice more people wear flip flops or go barefoot to stay cool. Even though the sun provides us with great Vitamin D (which helps with muscle aches and fatigue), too much sun can cause skin burns which in turn can promote cancerous cells. The feet are prime targets for melanoma. Anytime you notice a lesion between the toes or on the underside of your feet (where the sun does not shine), precautions should be taken to ensure melanoma is not the underlying cause. Generally when a patient notices a “new” mole on their feet, I measure, take a picture for their files and have the patient come back in six months to compare for any color or size changes. Many times there are no differences and we continue to watch for 20 | www.goodlife-mag.com
changes. If changes have occurred or if the patient has any discharge or skin irritation from the area I will obtain a biopsy to identify or diagnose the skin lesion. Most times the lesion is not cancerous. Finally, let’s discuss skin cancers on the feet and toe nails. Color, size and shapes are prime red flags as discussed earlier. But were you aware that melanoma can affect the toenails? Many people are not aware that a discoloration of the nail bed may actually be a life-threatening melanoma. If you notice a discoloration that begins at the matrix (bottom) of the nail just under the cuticle area that extends up the nail to the end of the toe, and you have not injured the toe, you need to have it seen by a Podiatrist. Remember early treatment can save lives. Many people forget to include their feet and toes when applying sunscreen. Melanoma can affect all parts of the body. So if you have unexplained discoloration of your toe nails, make an appointment with your podiatrist for your medical safety.
Cynthia Hemesath, D.P.M. earned her Medical Degree from the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in North Chicago, Illinois. She went to complete here Residency at New Mexico VA Healthcare System, where she also completed a Surgical Residency and served as Chief Resident for two years. She is an international speaker with the Foot and Ankle Foundation. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

VEHICLE CARE TIPS OIL PRESSURE You’ll get a more accurate dipstick reading by waiting a few minutes after turning off the engine, giving the oil time to drain from the crankcase into the oil pan. And make sure the vehicle is on level ground! In severe weather temperatures, you may have to change the grade of your engine oil. Check your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for the viscosity grade recommended for your vehicle’s engine. BATTERIES Cold weather affects battery efficiency. Check to make sure battery cables are corrosion-free. Build up on the battery cables can drain your battery. Most cold-weather breakdowns occur because batteries aren’t delivering full cranking power. TIRE PRESSURE Maximize your tires’ performance and durability by monitoring and maintaining correct air pressure. Air is a gas, expanding when heated and contracting when cooled. For most of North America, fall and early winter are especially important times for checking tire pressure - as the ambient temperature falls, tire pressure goes down.
22 | www.goodlife-mag.com
Under-inflated tires can cause: • Premature of irregular wear • Poor handling • Reduced fuel economy
SHOPPING
A good rule of thumb is that every 10 degrees Fahrenheit temperature change, tire pressure changes about 1 psi - higher as temperature rise, lower as they fall. Also, check your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for recommended tire pressure.
Over-inflated tires can cause: • Unusual wear • Poor handling • Reduced fuel economy Checking Air Pressure Check your vehicle’s tires at least once a month, when the tires are cold (let the vehicle sit for at least 3 hours). Look in your owner’s manual for the recommended tire inflation for your vehicle. Use a quality gauge. Don’t “eyeball” tires - radial tires can look fine even when they’re under-inflated. Be sure to look for objects that have become wedged in the tread they can work themselves further into the tire and cause air loss. And don’t forget to check the spare!

I
recently had a chance to hear Erik Weihenmayer speak at a health and wellness conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. His topic, ”Breaking down barriers and overcoming challenges”. All I knew, at that point, was that he had climbed the highest summit in the world, Mount Everest. Climbing Mount Everest and facing the elements, sounded like quite a challenge to me. But I didn’t realize until Erik walked on stage that he faced a much greater challenge than simply climbing Mount Everest. He was more than just some guy that climbed the highest mountain in the world. Erik was the only blind man to ever climb Mount Everest. Now, he had my attention.
As we watched video of the climb and heard Erik’s account of this seemingly unsurmountable feat, the barriers I have faced in my life seemed to pale by comparison. Not only had Erik reached the summit of Mount Everest but he had climbed to the highest summits in each of the seven continents and had kayaked all 277 miles of the Grand Canyon, as well. I sat in amazement and was brought to tears as he shared how he had he found the strength to move past the challenges in his life. When retinoschisis began to rob Erik of his sight at the age of 13, he began to embrace what he calls a ”no barriers mindset” and set out to change the way people face challenges in their lives. Little did he know that would be the 26 | www.goodlife-mag.com

THE NO BARRIERS LIFE ELEMENTS • VISION – Define a purpose that inspires you to give your best back to the world. • REACH – Move beyond your comfort zone to grow and reach your goals. • PIONEER – Persevere through challenges to innovate. • ROPE TEAM – Collaborate and connect with others to build strong communities. • ALCHEMY – Harness life experiences into optimism. • SUMMITS – Find the gifts earned through the struggle. • ELEVATE – Impact the world as a leader who serves.

THE NO BARRIERS PLEDGE Obstacles are all around us. They want to knock us flat on our backs and keep us from being our best selves. But inside all of us is a light that when ignited propels us through seemingly insurmountable obstacles. I pledge to live a No Barriers Life. In doing so, I am promising to harness adversity, break through my personal barriers and create a life of purpose and impact. I will always remember that regardless of our abilities, we all have some type of barrier in our lives and that no matter what barriers I face, what’s within me is stronger than what’s in my way. Remember, do not give up hope. For where there is hope, there is faith. And where there is faith, miracles happen.

Erik’s goal is to help people to see that the greatest discoveries in life are those inside you and that you can use your greatest challenges as a catalyst for something better in your life rather than allowing it to crush you. No matter what challenges you are facing, you can reframe the way you see those challenges and refuse to allow them to hold you captive. You can live a “No Barriers” life. Are you ready to take the “No Barriers” pledge? To take those challenges that you have allowed to hold you back and use them as a catalyst to move you forward to the life you deserve? I am.

he Family Counseling program at STCH Ministries was birthed by a compelling need, activated by faith, even in the midst of skepticism and doubts. In 1996, STCH Ministries was a well-established organization with a forty-year track record of caring for children in need, but professional counseling services were uncharted territory.
“Why is a children’s home beginning a counseling ministry?” the skeptics asked. “Can counseling really be Christian? Aren’t words like psychology, therapy, and intervention incompatible with Biblical truth?” Integrational Counseling was the answer – clinically excellent and distinctively Christian, administered by professionally trained therapists using the everlasting truths of Holy Scripture. STCH Ministries Family Counseling 34 | www.goodlife-mag.com
is now celebrating twenty years of ministry to children, individuals, and families, building up and bringing healing and hope through Christian counseling. Beginning with only one part-time therapist in the Corpus Christi office, the staff has grown to twenty-five therapists, including four directors, a vice president, and several administrative assistants. Today there are thirteen counseling offices in eleven cities, in addition to counseling on the campuses of Homes for Children and Homes for Families, two

When behaviors escalated to violence, she reluctantly divorced and began rebuilding her life. Counseling helped her to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, to set boundaries, and to say no and mean it. She also came to realize that trust must be earned and forgiveness is different from reconciliation. Today she is married with three beautiful children and she often shares her experience as an encouragement to others. One of her favorite verses is Proverbs 15:22: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Twenty years of experience and thousands of reports from clients like these provide confirmation that STCH Ministries was called to minister to the injured and help the weak become strong through Christian counseling. other branches of STCH Ministries. STCH Ministries offers the counseling services on a donation basis, trusting God and grateful people to provide the funding needed. Naysayers believe, “If people don’t pay, they won’t value it.” However, as a ministry, STCH Ministries wanted to reflect the grace of God: costly, but without charge to “whosoever will.” The results validate these decisions. One counseling client recalls, “I was habitually reacting in the heat of the moment. Through the combination of counseling and the Word of God, eventually I heard God telling me in my heart, ‘Stop!’ This time I listened and obeyed.” Enmeshed family issues trapped one woman in behaviors that only made things worse. The therapist helped her to create a genogram, tracing family history through several generations. That day she experienced, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free,” and freedom from old habits began. Another woman was married to a drug addict.
