What’s not to love about the Spring? Crocuses and daffodils swaying in a gentle breeze, drinking coffee outside in the Spring sunshine, new season fashions hanging beguilingly in boutiques, cheeks bearing a rosy glow and a definite spring in our step. Ah, life is good…
Here at Vale Life, life is very good. We’ve met some lovely people doing great business and we’d like to share them with you. A firm favourite of ours, owner and chef extraordinaire Kami Soroush of The New Red Lion in Pendoylan will be bringing you his Cooking With Kami series and in this issue, he starts this regular feature with one of his favourites, Roasted Cajun Sea Bass with Mango and Avocado Salsa on page 22. Spring is always a good time to spruce up your home and, with our interior design feature, we feature the best of the best interior designers in Cardiff and the Vale on page 46. Who wants to cook Sunday lunch when you can have it cooked for you. Check out our Sunday Best feature on page 18 and you can choose where next to spend your Sunday afternoon and Spring wouldn’t be Spring without a spot of gardening. Our resident gardening expert Bob Priddle offers advice for our green fingered friends.
Also this issue, Vale Life is delighted to welcome Hawkes Eye, which delivers a seasonal fashion fix for men across the Vale and beyond. Russell Scott-Lawson is the owner of the hugely successful gentleman’s outfitters Hawkes Essentials in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade. What Russell doesn’t know about what constitutes an impeccably dressed man frankly isn’t worth knowing about. Russell will also be contributing to our online blog at www.valelife.co.uk.
We’re expanding our online blog and we’re sure that Russell’s contribution along with other wrtiers will soon become very popular. If you haven’t checked it out head over to the website. Enjoy this issue and, most of all, enjoy the Spring! Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor jennifer@valelife.co.uk
CYMRAEG
Who’s using the Welsh language? There are many businesses across the Vale where a Welsh language service is available. To highlight those particular businesses, we’re introducing a new feature into the magazine. Where you see the orange Cymraeg symbol, it indicates that a person within the business is happy to speak with you in Welsh.
THINK GLOBAL BUY LOCAL We all know that there are benefits to buying over the internet, but do we really think about the negatives of ignoring our independents. Here are some good reasons to buy local. Money stays in the same area Local products are manufactured by people of the same country. Purchasing such a product keeps the money of the buyer in the same area. Reduction in the product cost Transportation of products from one place to the other requires special processing and packaging of the product. This along with transportation adds to the overall cost of the product. Manufactured products, if purchased locally, reduce the overall cost of production and thus reduces price of the goods.
Beneficial to local employees By buying local products buyers support local businesses. This leads to more profit for local businesses and better jobs and wages for the employees. Taxes Increased profits for the business and higher wages and salaries for the employees’ increases the amount of money deposited as tax by businesses and employees. Development of country The owners of local businesses usually invest in their own area. They support the development of schools and other essential services and help to improve the quality of life. Promotes savings Shopping locally saves time and money. A shopping trip outside the area will cost you for every mile you drive. ❧ 3 ❧
Reduces pollution As the product remains where it is produced it reduces the pollution which is created by transportation. Reduces damage of the products Transportation of products from one place to other is accompanied with wear and tear and damage. Local consumption of products keeps away the risk of product damage. Use it or lose it Business is the very life blood of any community. Without business, villages have no heart, towns have no centre and cities have no soul. Please support the many local businesses who are featured in Vale Life - without them there’d be no Vale Life magazine.

This is ambitious and almost progressive in places with shifting time signatures and layered guitars. However, it is at all times accessible, tight and hugely invigorating. Stand out track ‘Them That Do Nothing’ is a song that Ray Davies would be proud of.
This is a band bursting with energy, enthusiasm and ideas and when it works well, such as the future indie classic ‘Cake’ it is uplifting and full of energy. On this form Race Horses seem to be odds on favourites to succeed the Super Furry Animals as the next great Welsh band.

Origin:Orphan
Short, sweet, joyous pop songs from this New Zealander heavily influenced by the Beatles. This hovers a bit close to the edge of pastiche at times, but is saved by the sheer quality of the songs and musicianship. If he can begin to assert more of his own personality and style he could be a star.
Much darker than previous albums but this takes them to a whole new level. Many of the tracks are slower and definitely a ‘darker shade of pale’. Orchestral hook lines and aching vocals draw you in. If you hear a more sombre and heartbreaking song than the title track this year I’ll be surprised.

An obsession with 60s folk rock bands such as Pentangle and the Incredible String Band has certainly had an impact on this recording. This is carefully crafted with exquisite arrangements and sounds superb. There is a slight lack of variety, but this is a minor grumble. Classy.
Less frantic and more thoughtful than previous releases, showing a distinct and developing style. The band are now veterans of producing indie pop hits with apparent ease. However, there is also a maturity and willingness to experiment. Overall this album is a huge leap forward.
This band have been heavily hyped which can be a drawback. However, it does show promise with some finely crafted indie dance tracks, not a million miles from Friendly Fires territory. The potential is there, but it needs a few years and a few more albums yet to reach its full potential.

A great new talent from Wales – well Hereford to be precise. Classy electro pop songs with a folk sensibility. Following Little Boots, Florence etc this is further proof that the ladies are taking over and leading the way. Come on guys pull your fingers out!
Hendrix spent much of 1968/9 in the studio and here’s yet another collection of outtakes from that period. It’s worth getting for the unreleased title track and ‘Ships that pass’ but is probably for completists only. Newcomers should head straight for Electric Ladyland.
Triple album containing some of the most memorable and majestic music you will hear this year. Huge variety and depth helps to demonstrate why she is being talked about as this generation’s Joni Mitchell. Simply stunning!

Story of the Priddles journey to south Wales This book is far more than just one person’s family history. It looks at the social conditions that existed and huge changes that were taking place in Britain during the nineteenth Century. It’s not the quaint Victorian England chocolate box story, but the harsh reality of life for farm workers in Somerset during this period. Myths, legends and tradition are interwoven with one family’s struggle to survive during these times of enormous change. The Meeting of Dragons also looks at how a range of circumstance and industrial developments brought about
mass migration from Somerset to south Wales that has affected the social make up of these lands to the present day. Bob Priddle is a college lecturer and has had numerous articles connected with horticulture. He has also written the biography of the landscape architect Ralph Hancock for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. As well as writing, Bob is a popular public speaker, speaking on subjects as varied as gardening, goal setting and the history of the American west. Bob is also Vale Life’s resident garden expert (see page 15 in this issue). If you would like copies of this book please contact Bob Priddle. Arbuthnots Eye Know Eye Care At the beginning of the year Suzanne Cox from Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry’s Broad Street visited High Street Primary School to present a very informative session to two classes of young children about the importance of healthy eye sight. The children were given a lot of information about how eyes can be affected by different conditions and tried on glasses designed to show the type of sight problems people can encounter. The children were also given a lot of good guidance about how to maintain good healthy eyes with suggestions about the best types of food to eat. Most of the children thought that carrots were best for their eyes and not green vegetable foods like broccoli! Once they were back in class the children researched where the expression ‘carrots are good for your eyes’ came from and found that the expression originated from World War Two – this linked nicely to their history topic.
Suzanne of Arbuthnots said “It is important to teach children about looking after their sight, as it is the one sense we take for granted. Good eye sight is crucial for a child’s development and is important so that they learn at school and interact with other people. The Eye Know Eye Care Scheme which we’re hoping to roll out through all schools in the Vale of Glamorgan, teaches children the importance of communicating sight difficulties with parents and teachers, the importance of ❧ 10 ❧
taking breaks from activities which require concentration, the importance of a healthy diet for sight development and regular check-ups. Every child under the age of 16 is entitled to a free NHS sight test every year. If this is done annually, it is more likely that the child will continue visiting their optician in their adult life which is essential to pick up early signs of eye disease and possibly other health problems as well.” If your school would like a visit from Suzanne, then please call Arbuthnots on 01446 735551.

A bright investment with Elltec Solar With energy regulators warning of a 20% hike in electricity prices by 2020, there has never been a better time to turn to solar power. Richard Ellis of Pontyclun-based Elltec Solar, accredited installers of solar photovoltaic micro-generation power to homes and businesses across the UK, says the benefits of using solar panels for electricity can be significant, both in terms of reducing energy bills and your carbon footprint. “Elltec have been working with solar power for more than five years with clients as diverse in size and style as Bangor University, St David’s Art Gallery and Skomer Island. We know first-hand the benefits to be gained,” he says. “It doesn’t matter whether you have a small house, a stable, a school or a stately home, you will still see your bills reduce by around one third.”
“Solar power is a very good investment. With an average yearly return of around 16%, the system will pay for itself within eight to ten years. It generates power as soon as dawn rises and, the more intense the light, the more is generated. South and west Wales have the second highest sun irradiance levels in the UK (especially around the coastline), second only to Cornwall and the south west. Panel or side bar/box It will increase the value of your property, too. And, as well as offering clean, green energy, solar panelling is silent and unobtrusive, whatever the design of your building. Prince Charles is considering it for Clarence House, a Grade II-listed building,” says Richard. What’s more, the Government’s Feed in Tariff (FIT Scheme), available from April, offers incentives for those who instal solar PVs on their homes. These include cashback on the electricity they generate - even if they use some of that energy themselves - and a guaranteed payment for any surplus electricity exported to the grid.”

Ed Evans Foundation Walk the Vale 2010
Ever wanted to publish your own book?
This is the third year that the Ed Evans Foundation have organised a walk in conjunction with Brain Tumour UK, to raise money for research and to increase awareness of the tragedy of Brain Tumours.
Well now you can! Vale Life magazine can help you get your book into print. You might like to write and publish your own biography - perhaps you have some tales to tell.
It is one of the many walks that take place every year as part of Walk the World for Brain Tumours. Those taking part last year contributed a total of 2500 miles to this cause. Starting from Nash Point carpark, Marcross there is a choice of walks either a 6 or 12 mile (approx) route with the walk taking you along the Heritage Coast and returning back to Nash Point. Entry fee £5 per person and all ages are encouraged to participate.
You may be a budding poet but just haven’t plucked up the courage to publish your own work. You might be a local group or historical society that would like to immortalise your community in print. Perhaps you have some interesting local history that you would like to record for posterity. Easter Monday – April 5th 2010 All walkers will need to register either before the event or on the day. Registration and sponsorship forms are available from the website: www.edevansfoundation.co.uk Alternatively you can set up a sponsorship page on: www.justgiving.com/edevansfoundation

Arbuthnots see kids’ life through the lens A question that’s often asked of Arbuthnots is, ‘When is it ok for my child to start wearing contact lenses?’ The answer, quite simply, is contact lens wear is not a matter of age - many infants and toddlers wear them. There are many benefits to children wearing contact lenses. They are worn right on the eye for more natural vision, the entire field of view is in focus (which is important for sports), there are no annoying obstructions or reflections, there is no weight resulting in discomfort and they don’t fog up.
Then there are the reasons that matter to children that affect their self esteem and confidence. Contacts match everything you wear - not every family can afford fashionable glasses (this can sometimes lead to teasing and bullying). It can even be something as simple as glasses are annoying to wear in the rain or snow.
Whatever your reason, whether it’s a biography, a journal about a favourite interest or even some musings on your local area we can help with design and layout, writing and editing, proof reading, photography and illustration, printing and marketing. For more information contact: mark@valelife.co.uk or phone 0845 130 6452
If you feel your child would benefit from wearing contact lenses instead of glasses, then contact Arbuthnots for an appointment.
Very often many opticians simply don’t like fitting children with lenses, especially if the child has a difficult prescription. This is not the case at Arbuthnots. Sharron Hopkins, practice partner said, “We see many children who, for whatever reason, find difficulty in wearing eyeglasses, whether it’s because they find lenses more comfortable or that they find wearing glasses affects their self esteem. Prior to fitting, we explain the appropriate care procedures with the child and the parents (contact lenses are particularly fast and easy to clean). End result? A happy and confident child.”

Vale Life resident garden expert Bob Priddle advises on all things horticultural
VALE GARDENS I’ve always loved spring. Sitting on a hot beach in summer is my idea of purgatory. Even now, on a cold spring day you can see the buds of trees and shrubs beginning to swell, ready to start growing again. Lambs are taking their first breaths and birds are busy preparing for the arrival of their young.
It’s all about optimism and that’s something all good gardeners need in abundance. It’s been a tough winter and some shrubs are showing signs of not being as hardy as I’d previously thought. There will be a lot of work to do repairing and replanting. So here are ten tips to get you through the next few months.
■ Grow something different. Gardeners
■ Give your lawn a good rake before
are conservative creatures. Not perhaps in the political sense but in what they grow. Many grow the same species year after year, and by doing so, miss out on so much. Investigate companies like Chiltern Seeds, which while not having hundreds of glossy pictures, have some great varieties that are not commonly found in garden centres. ■ September is rightly regarded as
being the best time to plant spring flowering bulbs. But many garden centres now sell them in pots. Take home some pots of daffs and plunge plant them, pot and all, into the gaps in your borders. There’s nothing quite like spring flowering bulbs to brighten up overcast days.
you start mowing. It’s been a tough winter for lots of plants, grass included. Lawns will have a layer of dead grass, twigs and other debris on the surface. This layer of thatch can become an ideal starting point for moss or broad leaved weeds. ■ When you’re sowing seeds, always
check how many seeds are in the packet. There really is no need to sow the entire packet in one or even two goes. Some seed packets will contain up to 250 seeds and unless you’ve got a huge garden you’ll be struggling to thin out the seedlings and be throwing many of them away. Sow half or even a third of the packet and save the seeds in a cool, dry, dark tin until next year or swop them with someone else and broaden your range.
■ Sow some sweet peas. They’re not
difficult to grow from seed and make excellent cut flowers and if you choose the right variety, they can have a fabulous scent to go with it. Grow them in and among your runner beans to help improve pollination or in a border to give it height. They don’t grow well in pots, but you can do it if you pick a really big pot and keep the roots cool.
■ Start some first early potatoes. The
traditional day for planting spuds was Good Friday but it’s as well to remember that Easter is a moveable feast and this year it’s early. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a garden or not, you can always turn a large compost bag inside out, so the black covering is on the outside. Snip off the two bottom corners with scissors to improve drainage and you’ve got an ideal potato bag. Four tubers in a large bag produce great tasting spuds. ■ Replan and replant your perennials.
If they’ve been in for a few years, perennial plants will benefit from being lifted, divided and replanted. If they’ve grown too big, discard the older pieces, or better still, swap them with someone for some you haven’t got. Mix in some good garden compost or other organic matter and replant. You’ll be surprised how they benefit from being divided.
“Grow something different. Gardeners are conservative creatures. Many grow the same species year after year, and by doing so, miss out on so much.” ■ There are many subjects that benefit
from spring pruning. So take your courage in one hand and your secateurs in the other and go to it. It’s one of those tasks that a lot of people are frightened of but there are some quick guidelines. Always start with the three Ds, Dead, Diseased and Damaged. Any plant material that comes into these categories needs to come out. Roses, small flowered clematis, like the montanas and summer flowering shrubs such as buddleia all benefit from pruning now. ■ Watch the weather. Easter is always a
traditionally busy time for garden centres. All too often a few fine days begin to appear and people will rush out and buy bedding plants that have not yet been hardened off. A late frost, and they’re not that unusual, and too much optimism may cost you dear. Be prepared to cover tender subjects with fleece or bring them inside if late frosts threaten. ■ Towards the end of March give your
lawn its first cut. This should not be too low so you may need to raise the blades a little. Cutting it too short, too quickly will weaken the grass. The best advice is to reduce it by a third of its current height.

DESIRABLE DELI’S
This issue we bring you three of the best deli’s from across the Vale and find out what they have in store for us this spring.
If the colourful shopfronts don’t entice you in, then the cooking aromas certainly will. Springtime means hot cross buns, Welsh cakes and pasties and I simply can’t walk by a deli, after catching a waft of delicious baking.
“I can see it now freshly filled baguettes, cheeses, patés, pickles, pastries and cakes.” B A R RY
Food for Thought Everything you need If you’re a resident or a business owner in Barry then you’re in a very lucky position indeed, as you have a very fine deli right on your doorstep. What makes Food for Thought deli on Barry’s High Street, so special is that this family run business of some 24 years does what a deli does best and that’s offering the finest, freshest, tastiest goodies all in one shop.
Why not pop to your deli and stock up on fresh produce for a picnic basket? I can see it now - freshly filled baguettes, cheeses, patés, pickles, pastries and cakes. Just thinking about this is sending my tastebuds into a frenzy and, at the time of writing this, it’s only half past ten in the morning! Whether you’re spending time in Barry, Cowbridge or Porthcawl, be sure to check out the following deli’s for a real treat. Remember, if we don’t use them then we’ll lose them, so please support your local independent shops.
After a little spell of shopping in the many boutiques and gift shops, lunchtime is on the horizon and a quick trip back to Food for Thought is in order. The deli counter is heaving with an array of cheeses, meats, coleslaw and olives, that a baguette is called for. You must try the tandoori chicken pieces – to die for. There’s always soup of the day at £1 or with a roll £1.20 – very filling and nourishing. There’s absolutely everything you need here to stock your cupboards from daily essentials to speciality biscuits, nuts, oils and confectionary – the list is endless.
From the moment the deli opens its doors at 7am, there’s a waft of gorgeous cooking smells that hit your senses as soon as you enter the High Street and you just have to step inside. The now famous pasties (both small and large) sit temptingly alongside the daily bread and pastries, while also vying for your attention are the mouth watering Welshcakes, and other delicious cakes and pastries. A firm favourite would have to be the individual cheesecakes – so deep and topped with an assortment of fruits and naughty chocolate. ❧ 16 ❧
We look forward to hot cross buns, and the ones they sell at Food for Thought are said to be the best around. I’d buy in bulk if I were you. There’s always the freezer! Look out too for gluten-free bread. A first for Food for Thought but, after listening to their customers, it’s been added. That’s the thing about your local deli, they welcome customer requests and can, more often than not, get what you need, and it’s done with a smile. This isn’t just any deli – it’s the Food for Thought deli! Food for Thought 12 High Street, Barry 01446 735711

Home & Colonial Full of Spring delights! When was the last time you can recall going into a shop and having a genuinely fun and friendly shopping experience? For me the breath of fresh air came when I called into to Home & Colonial Fine Foods in John Street, Porthcawl. It was nice to be greeted by smiling faces, where nothing was too much trouble. Responding back in kind I also got to taste some of the delectable cheeses and salamis that I wasn’t familiar with, before I bought them, I didn’t even have to ask; the staff were already preparing to tease my taste buds. The most noticeable temptation about Home & Colonial however, is not just the glorious and heaving displays, but the powerful aromas that waft out and around the shop. Hot Welsh cakes are cooking on a griddle in front of you; roast pork and beef joints are visible in the oven (there is a great selection of cold meats ready to slice for tea) and the home made faggots are brought out hot from the oven in front of your eyes. COWBRIDGE
Farthings at Home Time to tuck in Who are the new owners of Farthings at Home? Knife and Fork Food Ltd acquired the Farthings Deli in October 2009. The company, formerly known as Choice Produce, also owns Woods Brasserie (Cardiff Bay) The Old Swan Inn (Llantwit Major), The New Conway (Pontcanna), Farthings Wine Bar and Restaurant and Farthings Outside Catering (both Cowbridge). Whilst all sites are unique in character, all serve great food with great service from professional staff. As much as possible our produce is sourced locally and cooked on the premises and changes according to the seasons.
It is no wonder then that the faggots have just been entered into the UK Great Taste Awards. Matthew Harvey the shop Manager has also just completed the ‘Discover the Origin Campaign’, where selected food specialists in all EU Member Countries are trained to enhanced levels of product knowledge in wines, parma ham and parmigiano-reggiano cheese. For the first time since Home & Colonial opened I also realised that they offer a Celebration Cake Service. I have often salivated at the sight of the fresh cream cakes and patisseries, but I had no idea such elaborate cakes could be ordered – in conjunction with the award winning company; La Crème in Neath, Home & Colonial can supply you with your own mountain of Malteasers (yes a real cake with hundreds of real Malteasers adorning the outside), or a cake in the shape of a giant cup cake. Amazing! This spring Home & Colonial have made sure that even the chastest of customers have something to look forward to by supplying a new range of healthy readymade meals. Roast vegetables, pasta and crème fresh to go!
“A new range of healthy readymade meals.” Looking for a spot of lunch or a quick snack? We offer ‘Take Out’ lunches, sandwiches to order, jacket potatoes, paninis, and fresh coffee. If we haven’t got what you’re looking for, we will try our hardest to source it for you. Our ‘At home’ catering service is also housed within the deli, catering for small functions in the home or office. We can also put together delicious hampers for any occasion, picnics, polo, concerts etc. Are you offering anything special for the spring period? During spring, in addition to our usual produce, we will be introducing an ‘Order Today, Collect Tomorrow’ fish service from arguably the UK’s best fishmonger. We are also hoping that as the weather gets better, more of our customers will take the opportunity to try one of our fantastic picnic hampers!
What does Farthings at Home have on offer? Just some of the gems the deli has on offer include charcuterie, cheeses, freezer meals, salads, olives, quiches, pies, breads, cakes and desserts. Apart from some pastries made by an exemployee pastry chef, all of the above are made on site. We also stock chocolates, pantry items, olive oils, ‘Farthings’ famous French dressing, and wines and beers including Welsh ones. ❧ 17 ❧
For the summer I have been told that even more new olives and anti pasta will be available along with Summer picnic hampers. The hampers will be full of red gingham checked treats for the beach or the countryside, like pork and pickle, or turkey, ham and cranberry cutting pies. So, my advice to all of you who’ve been watching the calories since Christmas and have found your cupboards lacking in cheer and appetite – go spring clean your kitchen, purge out all that is boring and dull. Fill them back up with spring delights and mouth-watering options of real food from Home & Colonial; remember good food doesn’t have to be bad for you! Home & Colonial 64, John Street, Porthcawl CF36 3BD 01656 773793 www.homencolonial.com
What do you think is special about Farthings at Home? As we are not part of a delicatessen chain, we can offer a ‘bespoke’ catering service. We are happy to provide just a few canapés, a romantic picnic hamper for two or cook for a dinner party for twenty in your own home. But, being part of a restaurant group we can sell popular dishes from the company in the deli. So, if you have tried a dish in one of our restaurants and would like to take it home for tea, ask in the deli and we will do our best to provide it. Finally, our staff have been working in the deli for many years and offer a very friendly and professional service. Farthings at Home 31 High Street, Cowbridge O1446 773545

SUNDAY
BEST BONVILSTON
Oaklands Organics If you really fancy a family gathering and cooking at home, then choosing your Sunday roast joint must be right at the top of your list of priorities. We can all be easily swayed by cheap meats from the supermarket but nothing tastes as good as free range organic meat (and veg). Oaklands Organics offer four award-winning organic meats which are available to purchase individually from farmers markets or delivered in good value meat boxes across the Vale and Cardiff twice a month. Their grass-fed Welsh Black beef is dry-aged for three weeks and is simply delicious. The Balwen lamb has a mild and sweet flavour and their pork is fantastic, as the pigs spend their day rooting in the woodland. Their poultry bears little or no resemblance to supermarket offerings, with the firm texture and taste of chicken that has lived a longer and happier life.
Winner of four True Taste Gold Awards, two Great Taste Gold Awards and highly commended five times with True Taste Awards, once you’ve tasted what’s on offer at Oaklands Organics you’ll never settle for less. Bon appetit!

Do you have a signature dish? That’s an easy one. It would have to be the Oscars burger. We’re often told it’s the best burger that customers have ever tasted. Many have asked but chef will not give away his secret recipe. Who are your Sunday diners? Oscars truly appeals to everyone. We have couples, grandparents, teenagers whose parents have dropped them off with us for an hour and local. We very often have local and international celebrities sitting at one of the tables.
Bar 44’s owners have been very busy indeed with a few new introductions to its repertoire. The first being a new Jack Daniel’s Lounge, a contemporary function room, in association with Jack Daniels. Situated on the floor above the bar, this space offers a very different kind of function room for the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond. Perfect for small dinner parties, drinks or cocktail parties for up to 50 people, canapé or tapas parties, business meetings (both day and night), product launches or hiring for the afternoon to watch the rugby whilst being waited on. Local businessman Huw John recently enjoyed his birthday party in the Jack Daniels lounge. Please see page 63 to see the pictures! Another addition is the membership scheme for Bar 44, named the JD44 Club. For anyone who enjoys good food and drink throughout the year, this membership is for you. For only £30 (12 month period) you will receive, a monthly membership card, a monthly special offer in Bar 44, a bottle of Prosecco on your birthday, one free hire per year of the Jack Daniels lounge and regular opportunities to attend food and drink tastings in the Jack Daniels lounge. The Huntsman Traditional and homely Why do you think Sunday is so special at The Huntsman? We have a homely, unhurried and relaxed atmosphere serving traditional and freshly prepared dishes. The Huntsman is perfect for special occasions. It has capacity for twenty eight covers.
Are they mainly local? I would say that they’re mainly from the Vale and Cardiff, but a surprising number of diners come from much further afield, often staying with friends or family living locally. Describe your wine list? We have a balanced selection of approximately fifty wines from a good quality house wine with a broad appeal at £13.95 per bottle, to more varied and interesting New World wines.
What’s on the menu? The menu changes weekly, but always includes a traditional roast. There are usually four starters and five main courses to choose from. There is a sample menu on the website, but the exact menu is usually decided the day before.
We also offer more classic Burgundy, Bordeaux and fine Champagne. The additional Bin End board adds the odd bottle to tempt the more adventurous. For example, at the moment, we have a Spanish Albarino £24.95, New Zealand Cloudy Bay on at £27.50, and a 2006 Beaune at £39.50.
Do you have a signature dish? Our succulent roast sirloin of Welsh beef and Yorkshire puddings has a big following and is available most weeks.
What are the prices for adults and children? Adults £17.50 for 3 courses, £14.50 for 2 courses. Children’s prices vary depending on what they choose, but generally half price or less.
Who are your typical Sunday diners? They tend to be couples, families with older children, friends meeting up from away and students home from college in need of a treat and a good feed.
What are your serving times? 12.30pm with last orders at 2pm Sundays from October through to March. We are closed Sundays through the summer months of July, August and September. Is it necessary to book? Booking is recommended, but not essential. As we only have eight or nine tables we don’t like to disappoint if we are full. The tables are not used twice in a lunch time as we like our customers to have a leisurely time and linger over their coffee.
We don’t have a set menu, so don’t expect fish fingers or chicken nuggets, but we are happy to serve any of the dishes we have in smaller portions, and plainly cooked if required.

La Cucina – a taste of the Mediterranean Sunday lunches are always a popular choice at La Cucina. Maybe it’s because of the AA rosette Mediterranean style restaurant, or because as one would expect from a four star hotel, they only use the freshest of local produce, freshly prepared and cooked to perfection. Diners are a mix of residents, members of the golf and leisure club and local residents, all enjoying a relaxed, informal dining experience, ideal for singles, couples or family gatherings. The style of offering is a traditional Sunday carvery with a choice of succulent roast meats, fresh local vegetables and a host of desserts. The Welsh black roast beef is a very popular choice and their vegetarian options also tick all of the boxes in terms of taste and presentation.

Vale Life bids a warm welcome to Cooking with Kami. Kami Soroush, owner of The New Red Lion in Pendoylan will, over future issues, be introducing us to some exciting and delicious easy to cook recipes.
COOKING WITH KAMI With Vale Life’s new Cooking with Kami series, you don’t have to be a professional to cook fantastic recipes.
Whatever your level of competency, hopefully these pages will inspire you to learn new skills and try new recipes which you’ll then be able to put on your own dining table and amaze your family and friends. For those of you not familiar with this culinary genius, Kami was the first chef to cook live on British television back in the 1980’s. Kami has been a chef for over twenty five years and his previous restaurant was the highest ranked Michelin Guide entry in Wales at the time.
Kami and his lovely wife Azi run The New Red Lion, Pendoylan, which is in a delightful setting to match the excellent cuisine. The couple bought the original pub as they wanted to create a destination restaurant in the Vale countryside. With friendly staff that provide a relaxed and efficient service, their aim of creating a friendly place to eat and socialise has certainly been achieved. The emphasis for Kami is on creating simple dishes with, often, a Persian twist using the freshest ingredients and beautifully presented. Over the course of the year, Kami will conjure up dishes of meat, fish and vegetables, that are packed with flavour suitable for lunch, dinner and supper. They will be easy to follow, as Kami will guide you through what ingredients you’ll need to buy, give clear instructions on how to cook the dish and even how to present it. All that’s left is for you and your family or dining guests to enjoy it. This is all about having a go and, with that in mind, we’d love you to send in photographs of you preparing Kami’s recipes and we’ll put the best on our website. Who knows? At the end of the year, there might even be a prize for the best.

Georgina Curtis and Mike Loveland recently opened their fabulous gallery on Eastgate in Cowbridge. Vale Life spent a lovely early Spring morning talking art.
IN THE FRAME What’s are your backgrounds? MIKE I was in the forces as a young man but I was injured, so I left and went back to college studying pneumatics and hydraulics and then went to work for a Japanese company as a robotics technician. If you recall those clever robots on the Renault Picasso advert, I was one of the guys that kept them happy. They do throw a wobbly now and again.
What art do you show? GINA It’s a pretty broad spectrum. We like to think we have something for every taste however we are conscious that art is very subjective. I think the one common thread that runs through the work we exhibit would be that it is quality led rather than price although like most things in life, you get what you pay for.
MIKE We also offer a framing service in-house and we sell great coffee and pastries and cakes within the chapel area of the gallery.
Meirion Jones
So how did you both get into art? MIKE All through that time I was passionate about photography which led me into framing my own work. We moved from Worcestershire, reestablishing ourselves in Cardigan and bought the framing business. As I was interested in framing my own work, when the opportunity to buy the framing business presented itself we snapped it up.
Who is selling well right now? MIKE The Jones’ (laughs), we have about seven Jones’ who are all selling really well. I was going to say they’re not related but two of them are. Meirion Jones and his father Aneurin. Meirion is a West Wales artist who was endorsed by Sir Kyffin Williams. GINA Meirion’s a young man with a really amazing talent and is fast becoming very collectable. He worked as a teacher for ten years but had to give that up due to the strength of his sales. His dad, Aneurin is an RCA artist and is one of our big names. He also has a particularly strong following and sells very, very well.
Aneurin Jones
MIKE Martyn Jones is an abstract artist who is about to exhibit at The Robert Steele Gallery in New York. We also have some beautiful pieces from Corrie Chiswell, a Cardiff artist who produces stunning, thought provoking pieces. Her work is often intimate and claustrophobic but beautiful to look at. Corrie’s work is a reflection of personal experience with a strong leaning towards surrealism and symbolism. What’s new for for Spring? GINA We have a Welsh/American artist by the name of Jane Grant-Abban. She lives in Minnesota at the moment but has family in Wales. Jane is a figurative artist and sells well in America. We’re so excited about this work because it has classic overtones. There is nothing quite like this in south Wales and we believe she’s a hot prospect.

GINA We developed the business, increased turnover dramatically and, of course, during this period, we came across a lot of stunning artwork and made a lot of great contacts with artists. So why the leap for the both of you from a framing business in Cardigan to a gallery in Cowbridge? GINA I was working in the private health sector and as we had a second home in Cardiff we thought we’d try to establish something in the area. We spent time considering where to place the gallery. We thought Cardiff was a little over-subscribed and we kept being drawn back to Cowbridge. Has the gallery been open long? MIKE We opened at the end of November after an extensive six month refurbishment of the building. ❧ 24 ❧

HEALTH & WELLBEING Take good care of yourself with Vale Life’s guide to healthcare in the Vale CARDIFF
Bravissimo in drive to support Wales With research showing that 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra, Bravissimo, the lingerie retailer for women with bigger boobs is stepping up its efforts in Wales to empower women with an understanding of how a bra looks and feels when it fits well. One of the most common problems identified by staff at the Cardiff Bravissimo store during bra fittings is customers wearing a bra that is too big in the back and too small in the cup. Wearing the wrong size bra can cause neck, shoulder and back ache due to the weight of the boobs pulling the bra up at the back, wearing an unsupportive bra means that your muscles have to do all of the work. Cardiff store manager, Claire Wilcox, said, “Discovering your true bra size can be life changing. It’s so easy to underestimate how much your figure, and the way you feel about yourself can be transformed by the right bra. Our customers often comment that their friends thought they had lost weight after a bra fitting, because they looked so different.” As part of Bravissimo’s efforts to support Wales, the Cardiff store in Queen’s Arcade was visited last week by the Wales Women’s Rugby team for a bra fitting. Rugby team Captain Mellissa Berry said, “Visiting the Cardiff Bravissimo has been an interesting experience for the squad, and we were surprised to learn that a lot of us were not the bra size we thought we were. The girls found the bra-fitting worthwhile, and thanks to Bravissimo will be more conscious of getting properly fitted in future.”
Claire continues, “We are delighted that the Wales Women’s Rugby team is helping us get the message across to women in Wales and further afield about the benefits wearing the right size bra. With eight out of ten women regularly wearing the wrong size, the implications long-term can range from general discomfort to back and shoulder problems. We also want to show women that having bigger boobs, needn’t be a barrier to positive self-esteem or to looking great.” Bravissimo, which was set up in 1995 by founder and chief executive Sarah Tremellen prides itself on being inclusive and friendly, so there is an open invitation to call into the Cardiff store in Queen’s Arcade, or any of the other 19 outlets throughout the UK and speak to a team of professional bra fitters who are on hand to spend as much time as you like helping you to find the perfect bra for you.

ESSENTIALLY HAWKES When a man wants to look effortlessly stylish, desires exclusive labels, insists on a bespoke tailoring service and requires private viewings and fittings, where does he choose to shop?
Hawkes Essentials in Cardiff’s beautifully restored Morgan Arcade has been dressing gentlemen for success since 1994. Vale Life talks to owner Russell Scott Lawson about why he believes Hawkes Essentials is truly the best dressed address in Cardiff. How long has Hawkes Essentials been established? We’ve been in the Morgan Arcade, one of the oldest and most beautifully preserved arcades in the Cardiff city centre, since 1994.
What brands do you stock? Hawkes Essentials stocks both bespoke tailoring and casual wear in sizes from 38 short to 50 long from brands such as R M Williams, Sand, Camel Active, Roy Robson, Eton Shirts, Gibson, Van Kollem, Remus, Jeffery West, Bernhardt (made to measure), Without Prejudice, Grenson and Milena. What about accessories? Our range of shoes are mainly from British sources, including quality brands such as Jeffery West, R M Williams and Grenson, all of which are handmade in this country.
“Hawkes offers bespoke tailoring and casual wear.”
“Our clothing will make you look at things differently. The inspiration for our choices emanate from a belief that quality matters most.” Which is your most popular brand? Gibson is among one of the best sellers in the store. As a fashion house their last few collections have adopted a modernised style whilst still keeping the classic feel. The brand is renowned for its traditional fine tailoring yet its attention to detail is delivered in an understated manner. ❧ 30 ❧
What do you think is special about Hawkes Essentials? Our clothing will make you look at things differently. The inspiration for our choices emanate from a belief that quality matters most. Our tailored lines and Saville Row shaped suits will help you to create the right impression. What are the three staple items every man needs to update his spring/summer wardrobe? A lightweight denim jean, either a white or black linen shirt and a linen lightweight blazer for a cool summer. Room for Living in Cowbridge have a reputation for providing high quality German and British kitchens but with their new range of Italian lifestyle furniture, their offering is complete.
THE SMART SET According to statistics, sleeping comprises about one third of the average persons life and, considering everything else that’s done in the bedroom, that’s a lot of time. Shouldn’t it then be a stylish and comfortable place to be?
Comfort and style should also come into play when furnishing your living areas. Luckily Room for Living now offer beautiful Italian designed bedroom and living furniture for your home. We spoke to owner Mike McNabb on why RFL are now offering bedroom and living furniture. Tell us more about this new offering Mike? Well, when our designer Jo Buckerfield came to work with us, her previous background was working with a family run business who designed and manufactured bespoke furniture and, as although our business name is Room For Living Kitchens and Interiors, we’d never really found the right products that we felt we could sell with any integrity. However, this new range meets our high standards perfectly.
What has impressed you about the furniture RFL are offering? We all know that the Italians have a real flair for design and when we came across this brand, we knew there would be a big demand for it because striking contemporary design and because of its functionality. The materials that are used and the level of technological functions mean that not only does it look beautiful, but it’s built to last.
So, you have furniture that can be used for bedrooms and living spaces then? Yes, from wood, leather and fabric finishes, we can offer furniture for both living spaces. As with kitchens, it is important that a room must combine functionality with beauty and with today’s technology and with this furniture, this is easily achieved. There’s no point loading televisions and clothing into furniture whose cabinet hinges crumble after just twelve months, so this furniture ticks all of the boxes. To whom will this furniture appeal? We can supply different styles and finishes to suit individual tastes and I can see it appealing to the same type of customers who buy our kitchens. For example, young professionals, mature couples, families and the single person with a sense of style. And you offer the same design and fitting service as with kitchens? Absolutely, we’re here to help customers create the rooms of their dreams. We have a great team here who can design and fit the furniture. They pride themselves on making a real difference to the overall look of the room and how it’s used. However long you and your family spend in each room, they can all look stunning.
“We can supply different styles and finishes to suit individual taste... we’re here to help customers create the rooms of their dreams.” ❧ 32 ❧

V ALE STYLE H Welcome to my seasonal view on male style. With each season I’ll be bringing you tips on what to wear and how to find what you’re looking for. Over the last few years, Cardiff has been transforming itself and the number of shops has increased significantly. The new St David Centre is here to stay and the independents must now learn how to compete and survive in what I think is now a very saturated market. Hawkes Essentials in Morgan Arcade has long served as a unique mens outfitters but now we’re having to adapt to a vast change in business. P O R T H C AW L
Whites Letterpress impresses In our travels across the Vale we’ve found a fantastic little printing company who produces gorgeous stationery. Here we talk to cofounder Sue Stride about the company’s unique offering. Can you tell us, who is involved in Whites Letterpress? The co-founders are myself and Helena Reimann. The vintage 1960’s letterpress we use is part of a print workshop owned by Helena’s sister Hana, so we are lucky to have a truly skilled craftsman operating the press for us. When were you established? August 2006. We started out designing and making wedding invitations and it has grown from there.

AWKES EYE
My strategy has been to source more unusual pieces and hunt down a few new labels that I believe have a positive future. I’ve started this season with a big increase in the amount of Sand and Without Prejudice that I buy. These are two labels that deliver quality, style and longevity and rarely make it to the sale rail. You will also find a much wilder selection of Jeffery West shoes after the shocking success of our pink Cuban healed crock prints. I’ve also just bought winter 2010 and that’s also very exciting, featuring a classical yet refined country look built for the city. Lots of waistcoats, three piece suits and checked fabrics will be available. Much of what we all buy is made outside the EU for little production cost to achieve maximum profit from wholesale to supplier. I will often buy products from designer labels to test the life span and I’m rarely impressed. The best method is to stick to labels that you trust and shops that you know.
On to what to buy, I think bright colours will be on the agenda and linen will be strong. As the baggy fit shirt is no longer in fashion, look for clean lines and flattering shapes (the clothes that are most often on our backs are the ones that fit us well). The trend continues for skinny jeans but I can’t think of anything worse in the heat. My advice would be to try and find garments that will breathe, leaving you feeling and looking cooler. Look out for Vale Life’s summer issue when I’ll be giving tips on wedding outfits - do’s and don’t’s. Until then keep spending! What services do you offer? Personalised letterpress printed stationery including:
Wedding Stationery - save the dates, invitations, orders of service and then all of the reception stationery too menus, table names, seating plans right down to place settings. Social stationery - party invitations, christening and baby announcement cards, correspondence cards and writing sets are becoming very popular at the moment. Increasingly we are asked to print business cards and corporate stationery and sometimes one off pieces like printing a poem for customers to frame. Who are your customers? Our customers love elegant design and appreciate quality. They are looking for something special (usually for their wedding), something that can’t be bought off the shelf. Most of our customers enjoy the fact that their stationery is made using traditional printing techniques and that it takes time to make. They expect a truly personal service with attention to detail and that’s exactly what they receive from us. ❧ 34 ❧
How long does the process take from initial enquiry to completion? On average the process will take around three to four weeks. Bespoke orders can take a little longer. We work with the customer to make sure they are 100% happy with the design and layout and then once the proof is signed off, we make the printing plates, cut and emboss the paper and then finally go to print. After the printing process, each order is hand finished, packaged and dispatched! The future’s bright, you gotta wear shades There are so many reasons to love the transition from winter to spring/summer. One thing I particularly look forward to is the new season’s range of fabulous sunglasses.
“Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry offer a range of sunglasses from high fashion to sports.”
Let’s face it, no spring or summer outfit would be complete without a pair of awesome shades. Sunglasses can finish an outfit and, of course, it’s not about having just one pair. Any self respecting, fashion conscious woman or man needs a few pairs to accommodate different outfits. Luckily, Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry offer a range of sunglasses from high fashion to sports. Their collection includes Versace, Vogue, Rayban, Polo, Ralph Lauren for high fashion and Adidas and Oakley for sportswear. This is by no means an exhaustive list! If you spot a pair of sunglasses that takes your fancy, then give Arbuthnots a call and they can usually source them.
Using modern technology Arbuthnots can also fit prescription lenses into many fashion and sports sunglasses, so feel free to bring in your prescription to have a browse and a chat. Headaches and glare can be a thing of the past!

Seren A star is born! I’m glad that St David’s 2 has come to Cardiff, I really am, but as I don’t want to look like a Stepford wife, I’ll always head for the small independent boutiques for my clothes and accessories. Seren, in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade, is a particular favourite of mine and many women like me who prefer the individualism and one-to-one service you get from an independent boutique. It just so happens that Seren’s owner, Linda, has a particularly good eye for spotting talented designers and quality brands, so a visit to her boutique will guarantee me a one-off piece that’s unlikely to be seen on anyone else while on my travels. Now that event season is near (I’m thinking Polo, Ascot or garden parties) I’ll need a couple of glamorous gowns to look gorgeous in. I’ve no doubt Nadia, Arrogant Cat or Vercia will oblige there. As for unique daywear to evening items, Gia, Darling, Lamis Khamis, Kaki, Boutique, Misumi and Lucy Sunshine, Goldie, Feud, Laura Lees and, again, Arrogant Cat will fit the bill nicely.
With a selection of shoes sourced from France, Italy and Brazil, and quirky bags by Lie Down I think I Love You, I’ll really be spoilt for choice. I’m also a magpie when it comes to individual pieces of jewellery and Linda’s eye for the individual comes into play again here as her jewellery from Mawi and Susuki Hai will definitely catch the eye. Seren, here I come!

Scallywags
The Celtic Knot
Carousel
If you’re looking for a shop that sells more branded children’s wear than you can shake a stick at, then Scallywags is the shop for you.
You can’t get a better selection of true Celtic products than in The Celtic Knot. It has such a great selection of Welsh tartans, throws, slate, coals, Welsh pottery and rugby paraphernalia. The Celtic Knot is a treasure trove for all things Welsh.
Diz Miles, owner of Carousel, has something very special to offer. Ladies come from near and far to see what previously owned garments, bags, hats, belts, gloves and pre owned and new jewellery is on offer in her dress agency.
With popular brands as Catimini, Pampolina, Timberland, Jean Bourget, Kenzo, Noa Noa, Cakewalk, O’Neill, Bench and Oilily for boys and girls from birth to fourteen years, you need not look anywhere else. Owner Yanna Willey has run the shop for 21 years and delights in offering childrenswear and accessories that you’re unlikely to find on the high street. If mums like to look good, it’s only fair that children can too!
Owners Theda Williams and Olwen Anderson have run this popular shop for seven years and you’ll find that you’re spoiled for choice. Regular customer Mrs Dorothy Davies says that she often visits the shop as it has an excellent choice and the service is second to none.
Diz, quite rightly, is very choosy on the items that she offers for sale. Shoecare
The Linen Cupboard
Fruit and veg shop Strawberry Fields has been serving the local community for the past six years and it does it extremely well.
This fantastic little shop opened just before Christmas and offers all of the things you would expect from a Shoecare shop, and more.
Father and son Paul and Joel Preece opened the business six years ago and its thrived ever since. It stocks what you would expect but it also does a roaring trade on cut flowers and plants. It also sells bird food and has been known to stock exotic fruits when in season, such as passion and dragon fruit. Made to order fruit baskets are popular and the shop supplies fruit and veg to local restaurants and businesses.
They repair shoes, cut keys, sell trophies and engrave a large range of goods. In addition they also sell a wonderful selection of bags, purses, umbrellas and Zippo lighters. We met Craig Lamont - Shop Manager, who trained in their Bridgend branch and is a very affable young man who is a true credit to the company. Obviously customer care is high on the agenda for this shop and is sure to do well.
We’ve been a huge fan of The Linen Cupboard since Vale Life first hit the presses. Owner Melanie James makes you feel so welcome as soon as you walk in, as does Stella, the Linen Cupboard’s mascot.

Some things in life just go together... peace and love, ribbons and bows, yin and yang. When it comes to engagement and wedding rings, thought should also be given on how they fit together. Matt Mullooly, owner of Northern Star in Penarth tells us what makes...
A PERFECT FIT
How’s business since we last met? Business is great! Since we last met I’ve had a significant number of new commissions which I’m currently working on.
Last time we spoke, you were working on commissions for Christmas presents. As we come into spring, what are your customers looking for? Christmas is always a really busy time for me and this year was no exception. I had great reactions to the pieces I made. With spring now on its way, the focus seems to be on engagement and wedding rings. Although a lot of customers are looking to have something unique made, something which they may have had on their mind for a while but never really knew how to go about having it made. That’s the great thing about what I do... I turn people’s dreams into reality.
What do you offer those customers looking for something a little different for their engagement and wedding jewellery? When you buy an engagement ring, it’s important to think forward to the wedding band and how the two rings will sit alongside one another. Whilst incorporating the customer’s ideas, I design engagement rings that enable the two rings to fit flush together regardless of their style. This is where my CAD program comes into its own. It allows the customer to view a computer generated photo quality image of what their rings will look like together. As a further aid, I’m able to create a scale wax replica model of the ring they’re having made.
Are there any significant trends this coming season? Although I’m always visiting shows and exhibitions to ensure I keep up-to-date with current trends, I am a bespoke jeweller and so tend to tailor my designs to suit my customer’s individual style, rather than sticking to any set formula. How long does it take to create and produce a ring from idea to finished product? As a guide, I’d say it takes a month to produce a piece once a design has been agreed, though I really don’t like to put a timescale on the design process, as I prefer to focus on creating the right look for the customer. Most customers understand this creative process and are happy with it.
Do you have any exciting plans for 2010? I’m always planning and developing ways to improve my services - I think it’s unwise not to. At the moment, I’m working on my own Northern Star range. Frustratingly it’s taking a little longer than anticipated due to the amount of commissions I am currently working on, but then it is hard not to see that as positive!
Do you offer an incentive if a couple buy the engagement ring and then the wedding bands? Yes I do. My partner and I are getting married soon and know how expensive it can be. I’m always happy to offer discounts to couples buying the set.

“With spring now on its way, the focus seems to be on engagement and wedding rings.”
About a year ago I was introduced to a young man who was a bespoke jeweller, he came highly recommended, so I commissioned a ring, not really knowing what to expect. The result was absolutely stunning! Since then I have had several items made and each piece is beautifully crafted and unique for me. I don’t think I would ever go into a regular jewellers, knowing that I can have something made especially for me. Josephine Goode Cardiff
My partner and I had matching wedding bands made at Northern Star. We wanted bands that were made for us rather than something that had been mass-produced.
A friend of mine recommended Northern Star to me having had a beautiful emerald ring made. I had some diamonds in various pieces of old jewellery I no longer wore.
The nice thing about dealing with Matthew was there was no hard sell which we had experienced on the high street. He was more interested in creating the look we wanted.
Matt removed the stones and reset them in a gorgeous circular pendant he designed for me. I liked them that much he’s currently making me matching earrings!

As an avid fan of Bryl’s Boutique on Barry’s High Street, I just couldn’t wait to see what the new season had to offer. I know this could be said for any boutique but I speak from the heart, and my purse, when I say that I’m never disappointed when I walk through the door.
SERIOUSLY STYLISH For my casual days, I can count on wardrobe staples that brands like Sandwich and Great Plains do so well and for smart casual or something a bit floaty and girly, I’d be tempted by Darling, Chilli Pepper and Traffic People to hit the right note.
When a special occasion such as a wedding, Ascot or the Polo is looming, then a trip to Bryl’s is a must as I can always count on French Connection, Nougat and Ted Baker to offer a beautifully tailored or statement piece which will make me look and feel a million dollars. Accessorising any outfit is a dream with gorgeous bags from Suzy Smith and fabulous jewellery by Melinda Mulcahy and BiBi. Bryl’s is known for its range of musthave footwear by Ugg Australia and this season is no exception as Ann is stocking some amazing summer sandals and flip flops by the brand. Speaking of amazing footwear, Bryl’s is now stocking the legendary Fit Flop which promises to tone and tighten your leg muscles while you walk in them. With such a hectic working schedule, it’s not always easy for me to find the time to shop, but with late night opening until 7pm on Thursday nights, shopping for my new wardrobe couldn’t be easier.
“Ann has such a good eye that I know there’ll be something, if not lots of lovely things, that will end up coming home with me.” ❧ 42 ❧

I think what makes Bryl’s Boutique really special to me is the great service. Ann really gets to know her customers, what they like and what suits their body shape and can put forward suggestions on what would work for them. I’ve made some serious errors in the past with other boutiques who, in hindsight, only appear to be interested in shifting stock, but I can count on Ann and her team to find the right clothes for me that suit my shape and personality.
With such competitive prices, a fantastic range of brands and honest and attentive service, why would I go anywhere else? And anyway, to coin a now well worn phrase, I’m worth it!

THE COLOUR PURPLE Cowbridge based Room for Living’s reputation for high quality kitchen design holds no bounds. They can even design the kitchen to fit in with your chosen colour scheme. We visit Mr and Mrs James at their beautiful Colwinston home to see the workmanship and to find out how they were living with their new purple kitchen. What made you consider Room For Living as your kitchen designers? Our house was built in 1975 and we still had the same kitchen cupboards in 2009. When we returned in 1999 from working in Bermuda, I would randomly go into various kitchen shops and ask if I could have a purple kitchen. Last year, I went into Room For Living and asked Steve whether I could have a purple kitchen and he said yes. Did you look at other kitchen companies before choosing them? We visited almost every other kitchen company in South Wales to make sure that we had the best. With whom did you liaise? Steve Moulton. What was it about Room For Living that made you choose them? On our second visit to the showroom, Steve produced a cupboard which had been professionally painted purple. This showed initiative and really impressed me. Tell us about your love of purple Purple has always been my favourite colour. I was a Latin teacher and the Romans were keen on purple, which during some periods of the Empire could be worn only by the Emperor and his family. Since I was always interested in the Romans, this probably influenced me.
Tell us about how they matched your chosen shade of purple? I looked through the various RAL colour charts and liked a few of the purple shades. Since I was unsure which would look the best in the kitchen, Steve advised us to paint the old cupboards different shades, matt and gloss, and live with them until I was certain. After a few months, I was convinced that the deep purple NCS S3555-R60B was right for me. Did they meet your expectations? Yes, Steve was absolutely brilliant. I informed him at the beginning of the project that I was a perfectionist and as I am already sixty, this was my one and only chance to have the kitchen I had always wanted. Throughout my life, I had made do with the kitchens in the houses where we had lived. However, Steve and the team at Room For Living surpassed my wildest dreams! I explained what I wanted and Steve was constantly coming up with great suggestions, which my husband and I had not considered. I visited Room For Living several times a week for months, agonising over every detail and Steve was so patient and informative – a lesser man would have buckled under my continual demands! I wanted everything balanced and Steve even ordered two of the same grilles so that the one for the fridge and the one for the plinth heater would be the same. Were they clean and tidy? Yes. Before they left each evening, they cleaned and tidied. Are you pleased with the end result? We are delighted with the end result; I now have the kitchen of my dreams. Before they began, I was worried that the Silestone counters, cupboards and floor tiles would not look good together but Steve’s suggestions and advice were right on the mark. The kitchen looks fantastic, so much larger than it did with the old green cupboards. ❧ 44 ❧
Would you recommend the Room For Living team to your friends and family? When we mentioned to friends and family that we were going to have a purple kitchen, the response was usually, “You ARE brave!” Now that it is completed, everyone has said that it looks fabulous and you can tell from their expressions that they mean it. If any friend or relative wanted a new kitchen, I would definitely recommend Steve Moulton and Room For Living.
“If any friend or relative wanted a new kitchen, I would definitely recommend Room For Living.”
Are you happy in your new kitchen? I feel extremely happy. Before we had this kitchen, I could easily go to bed, leaving the kitchen in a dreadful mess. Now it is always immaculate! Room For Living Willow Walk,Cowbridge CF71 7EE 01446 771 234 info@rflkitchens.com www.roomforlivingcowbridge.com

PENARTH
Hamptons 10 Ludlow Lane, Penarth CF64 1EA 029 2070 5391
With the gloom of the winter well and truly behind us, many of us will be thinking about a fresh new look for our homes. The problem is, where do we find that fabulous lamp featured in all of the style mags and is flocked wallpaper here to stay or just this season’s fad? There is one course of action that will solve all of these taxing problems and that’s to employ the services of an interior designer. We asked Andy Bradshaw, the resident designer at the Hamptons store in Penarth what the benefits of engaging an interior designer might be.
“Design ability and experience are vital as well as building a relationship with the client.” The most obvious advantage of employing a designer is that you immediately gain access to their sourcebook. This is the designer’s Bible that has been developed over many years and is packed with contacts, suppliers, visuals and those impossible to find telephone numbers. Of course design ability and experience are also vital as well as building a relationship with the client to ensure that you completely understand their project and can interpret it in a way that they could never achieve alone. But isn’t interior design all about carpets and curtains? Far from it. We frequently work with architects from the outset of a project and are actively involved from the start of the build to completion. If you are thinking of employing an interior designer then make sure that he or she has this experience. Carpets and curtains are really only a small part of the designers work.
How do you work with your clients? Unlike many of the makeover programmes the process doesn’t happen in 60 seconds. We first discuss the nature of the project which can range from a single room to a complete house. Based on this information we agree the best way forward. Some clients have begun the work themselves and simply lost their way, needing only a few hours to put them back on track. Others however have weightier projects that require a complete design package. What does that involve? After our initial meeting we work out the costs for producing finished designs. Once the client approves the quote we arrange a further meeting to discuss the project in greater detail. In the simplest terms this is their wish list. Before we start designing we produce a detailed design brief for the client which describes the existing house, problems and issues that need to be addressed and an overview of the proposed look, style and feel of the new home. This document is vital and ensures that we fully agree on the way forward and that all opportunities have been properly explored. Following this we undertake background research to support the development of the project and commence work on the designs which will give the client everything they need to complete the scheme. This includes hand drawn visuals and scaled room layouts, all of the paint colours, references for lighting, furniture, accessories and yes, flooring and window treatments. And does your involvement end there? Generally speaking, no. Most of our clients ask us to help them implement the design and this can range from suggesting suitable contractors, overseeing elements of the work on their behalf to taking them shopping. That sounds like a great day out. It can be but it also saves the client time and money. Having done my homework, I take clients to a shortlist of stores and suppliers, perhaps to see only one item in each place. Clients say that it’s a great way of focussing on the job in hand without getting sidetracked, apart that is from lunch! Often we can arrange to borrow samples of products to try out at home where clients can see how they work in their space and under different lighting. ❧ 48 ❧
“Having our design studio in the store also enables customers to tap into our design experience.” Hamptons has such unique products. How do you find them? It’s our best kept secret… but seriously, we work extremely hard to find well designed and unique products. We are passionate about showcasing new collections to our customers that they would never get to see in some of the mainstream interiors stores which often cater to a safer market. Having our design studio in the store also enables customers to tap into our design experience and we are happy to offer free advice on any of our products.
What are your new products for the spring and summer? The Content by Conran collection of contemporary furniture, designed by Sir Terence Conran has been very well received by our customers and this year we are showcasing some of our existing pieces in brand new fabrics.
We have new throws arriving from a woollen mill in the west of Ireland and from Dreamweavers who design our fabulous pebble rug and cushions we have some beautiful new products and colourways on order.
We also have some new pieces of upholstery and cabinet arriving in the spring. All of their upholstery is now made in the UK which we believe is really important. We are also looking at several other new UK upholstery companies to increase out range of sofas and occasional chairs.
New mirrors from Belgium also arrive in spring together with lighting in some gorgeous metallic colours such as copper. Silk cushions and lampshades from an up and coming British designer, Jen Rowlands will complement our current collections and wall and mantle clocks from a Birmingham based company will be in stock very soon. ❧ 49 ❧
It all sounds very exciting and we can’t wait to see all of the new products. If any of our readers haven’t yet visited Hamptons you really must head over to Penarth. The store is a haven of wonderful products for the home and you can also have coffee or lunch in the Blue Pelican Café upstairs. Vale Life meets Steve and Claire Bloom, owners of Spacefittingfurniture in Cardiff’s Design Quarter to discover the innovative and unique contemporary kitchen concepts on offer at this highly creative showroom.
SPACEFITTINGFURNITURE How long has Spacefitting been established? CLAIRE Business started in 1972, when Steve’s dad opened a kitchen showroom. There were generations of furniture makers in the family and Steve started straight from school and learnt all aspects of fitting and designing. We have been selling Rational Kitchens for more than 30 years. How long have you been here? STEVE We moved to these premises in June 2006. We needed a more contemporary, spacious showroom, where we could show the products in a way that complemented them and showed what we and the furniture are capable of. It’s so much nicer here. We have parking which makes life a lot easier for our customers. We also have more passing trade, so peoples’ awareness of us has increased. What do you think sets you apart? CLAIRE Obviously it’s my baking! We are passionate about design and function. We want our clients to love their kitchens! After all, it is usually the hub of a home. We listen to our clients and their lifestyles, so our designs are adapted to suit their needs. Steve is a very talented designer and takes pride in that fact. He is very knowledgeable and knows what makes a kitchen work successfully.
The Prexury, an amethyst semi-precious stone backboard
What are your respective roles in the business? CLAIRE For me, the showroom is an extension of our home. We spend more time here than at home, so want people to feel comfortable and welcome. I cook with the appliances for practical reasons and also because it helps and enables me to understand a product much better, so that I can give informed advice to clients. We work together as a team and have a lot in common when it comes to design ideas and forward thinking. I have always loved interior design, so for me it’s just great fun. STEVE Our roles cross over. We both deal with clients and Claire has been known to unload a delivery in her five inch heels! I create the designs on the computer but, if Claire thinks I’m going in the wrong direction, she will tell me. Claire handles the accounts and purchasing and is often online for hours looking for stools and tables for clients. What type of customer is drawn to Spacefitting? CLAIRE Our customers tend to be design aware, into contemporary ideas and open to suggestion. We are happy to provide traditional kitchens, but that’s not our passion. We want our clients to be drawn into our showroom and be excited about what’s on offer.
The new display has the latest technology and newest concepts. For example, The Prexury, an amethyst semi-precious stone backboard is backlit to show its translucency, giving an exceptionally glamorous and unique look. This is the only display of Prexury in the UK. We have combined the latest kitchen technology with a home automation system supplied by Smarta. This controls automatic doors, TV sound and lighting, with the possibility of controlling the whole house. What are your future plans? CLAIRE Our five year strategy at Spacefitting is to keep moving forward and to keep looking out for new and exciting products to introduce our customers to whilst keeping our designs fresh and innovative but with a friendly, relaxed approach. Recently, we have been nominated by the Kitchen Bedroom Bathroom review for Customer Service Awards for Kitchens. We are one of four nominated for the UK of which we are very proud, so it would be fantastic to win a few awards for our work over the coming years.
Any exciting developments on the horizon? STEVE We’ve just installed a new display with some really great innovative concepts. There have been some amazing developments technologically which is changing the way we interact with our modern kitchens and appliances. It’s really quite exciting. We are always trying to up our game and stay ahead of competitors. We want to lead south Wales in design and prove that we are as forward thinking as any London showroom. We show the latest products and are always looking for new concepts and ideas to further objectives for design. ❧ 52 ❧

Lesley Taylor BIDA, Design Director of the award winning interior design company, Taylor’s Etc talks to Vale Life about why she is so passionate about great design.
TAYLOR MADE How long has Taylors Etc been established? We opened the store just over four years ago. It was designed to show the full range of products and services we supply in the best way possible. Since opening, the showroom has won a number of awards including, ‘Excellence in Retailing’ and even though bathroom design is just one of our services, the store has been honoured with the UK ‘Bathroom Showroom of the Year’ award on two separate occasions.
How many designers do you have working with you? There are six of us plus an all important support team. Many of our designers are qualified architectural interior designers and this level of expertise ensures the service we offer is of a very high standard. I am proud of our team, they’re a great bunch to work with and are as passionate about design as I am. Their enthusiasm is contagious - it’s great to see them taking the customers’ hopes for the project and offering a unique, creative solution.
❧ 54 ❧
What services do you provide? Customers can call into the showroom and just buy a single roll of wallpaper, some tiles for their kitchen, they can commission us to design a bathroom or even the entire interior of their home. We are here to help in which ever way the customer finds most useful. What products do you display? Our interiors department offers wall coverings and fabrics from design houses such as Designers Guild, Zoffany and Andrew Martin.
“We genuinely care. It’s important that the products we offer are of a very high standard, the service we offer the customer is very design focused and technically sound.” We have tiles from some of the world’s most exciting manufacturers and quarries and, as we buy direct, we are very competitive. Our bathroom ranges are wonderful, they enable us to create anything from a simple en-suite clad in stone, to wet rooms and/or steam rooms that add a spa-like quality to a home. We are just taking delivery of a wonderful range of garden furniture ensuring our customers can extend the design focus of their homes into the garden.
Who do you design for? Our customer base includes architects, property developers, hoteliers and the general public. What are you working on at the moment? We have a number of domestic projects, one being a beautiful old farm house in Brecon, another, a new commission to design the bathrooms of a beautiful gothic style home in Cardiff. We are also working on the interiors scheme for a new restaurant chain, a small boutique Hotel in Pembrokeshire and we are delighted to be working with some inspiring architectural practices producing specifications for tiles on projects such as university buildings and large scale housing developments. What budgets do you cater for? That is the exciting thing about design, it shouldn’t have to be about how much money you have to spend, it’s the way to use your budget that counts. I genuinely believe that you get better value for money when you purchase at Taylor’s Etc, as we focus on the design as a whole, helping create an inspiring interior rather than just selling product. Who would you like to work for? We like working for a diverse range of customers , it ensures our ideas are fresh and inivative. An ideal customer is someone who is looking for something a little different and who appreciates the impact an interior designer can have on their interior scheme. Some of our most rewarding projects have been those where the customer was happy to let us push the boundaries a little when we created a design based on thier personality and lifestyle.
“We are here to help in which ever way the customer finds most useful.” ❧ 55 ❧
What would you say is special about Taylors? We genuinely care. It’s important that the products we offer are of a very high standard, the service we offer the customer is very design focused and technically sound and we want the customer’s whole shopping experience to be enjoyable. This is why our research shows that over 70% of our customers have either bought from us before or they have been recommended by others who have.

Since 2005 Elltec Solar have engineered on many photovoltaic installations throughout the UK and Europe.
Owner Richard Ellis hails from a background of electronics and electrical services. With over twenty years of experience, and three years within the PV installation and manufacturing field, he became an independent engineer in June 2008. Richard says, “Although there are many sceptics of solar photovoltaic cells as a source of renewable energy, I, along with many others, have embraced this technology. As soon as night becomes day the electrons awake and the cells start to generate! There are no moving parts to wear out. It’s clean, silent and non-obtrusive. The efficiency, output and performance of photovoltaic cells are becoming greater year on year. It’s the favoured source of renewable energy in Germany with our climate and weather patterns being much the same in the UK.”
Rebranding could be the key to success One of the things many successful businesses do when times are tough is to get themselves talked about. One of the best ways to create a buzz about your business is to change the way it looks. Mark Roberts, from Rhoose, has over thirty years experience in branding and logo design.
Elltec Solar Electricity supply and install PV Microgeneration Systems for: ■ Domestic homes ■ Housing developers ■ Commercial businesses ■ Local authorities ■ Churches ■ Schools ■ Social housing ■ Nature reserves ■ Farmers and land owners ■ Garden centres ■ GP’s surgeries ■ Holiday lets and static caravans ■ Stables and small holdings
Mark says, “This is the perfect climate for rebranding. Many businesses are apathetic at the moment, so the ones that are rebranding can often gain a big advantage. You really notice the new or updated shop fronts in a recession.

IN THE ZONE
Dawn (right) and daughter Paige are managing The Coffee Zone
“Everyone is welcome at The Coffee Zone. The café is already drawing in members of the public and other businesses.”
How’s business? Actually it’s very encouraging at the moment. We’re enjoying a very high occupancy rate.
Any new tenants? Yes, we have attracted some national companies such as Bam Nuttal, the Arthritis Research Campaign organisation and UK Car Group that operate one of their very successful branches of ‘We Buy Any Car’ from The Business Centre. What do you think is bringing them to The Business Centre? Clients tell us that serviced offices are ideal for this volatile economic climate as it means they can downsize or increase their office space in an instant depending on how their company is doing. They also save on staff costs as the receptionists at The Business Centre answer their phones for them saving them National Insurance contributions and they don’t have the worry of cover for sickness or holidays.
Any exciting new developments? The Business Centre is constantly looking for ways to improve support and services to our clients and with this in mind we are delighted to announce the opening of our in-house café, The Coffee Zone.
What is on offer? Excellent Segafredo coffee, beautiful freshly made baguettes, paninis and cakes, as well as popular fresh specials such as our now famous chicken curry, pizza, spaghetti bolognaise, hearty soups and stews.
What do you think such a significant capital investment will bring to The Business Centre? We made this new investment to provide an additional much needed service for not only our clients at The Business Centre but also for their clients who visit them regularly.
What are the opening times? Coffee Zone is open from 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday at The Business Centre.
So you don’t have to be a tenant to use The Coffee Zone? No, not at all, everyone is welcome. The café is already drawing in members of the public and other businesses from the Ty Verlon Estate who are delighted to have somewhere providing good food and hot drinks in the locality. Who manages The Coffee Zone? The Coffee Zone is being run by Dawn Lee and her daughter Paige. Dawn has had over twenty years’ experience in the catering trade and is very excited to be involved in this new service at The Business Centre.

When a man reaches his mid forties, chances are he’s got all the clothes, cd’s, gadgets and gizmos he’s ever likely to need. With the big day looming, I must admit I was struggling to think of the perfect gift when I had a bit of a light bulb moment...
I’ve known Mr Roberts for over fifteen years and have come to learn that, for him to relax, he needs to be taken away from his usual surroundings - the phone, computer, household chores (ha! private joke) to switch off and recharge his batteries. Having thoroughly enjoyed a weekend at one of the Von Essen hotels a while back, at The Royal Crescent in Bath, I searched online at www.vonessen.com and saw that they had several hotels under their ownership. Quite a few of them took my fancy but I didn’t really want to stray too far from home so Thornbury Castle in Gloucestershire, seemed to fit the bill perfectly. The castle stands in fifteen acres, has its own vineyard and boasts the oldest Tudor garden in England and, the only castle in England to open as a hotel. It is steeped in history, as you can imagine, and history has it that Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn once walked the rooms and grounds. It celebrated 500 years in 2009 when it came under the ownership of the Von Essen collection of private hotels. Its current accolades include 3 Red Stars and 32 AA Rosettes from the AA. The Castle is perfectly situated to explore the surrounding Cotwolds.
AND We arrived fairly late into the evening and just happened to be greeted by Brian Jarvis, the super friendly general manager of sixteen years standing. Brian led us to our room, one of 27 in the Castle, the Mary I suite which had a very impressive four poster bed chamber, (one of four in the Castle). As with most of the rooms it also featured beautiful tapestries and ornate ceilings. It had the most beautiful oriel windows which gave us very impressive views of the church opposite. I was a little concerned initially at being so close to a church.
Would early morning bells deafen us in our slumber? I needn’t have worried. The bells were more chime-like and we had to strain to hear them. Perfect. Perhaps the Castle’s most requested room is The Tower Bedroom, with commanding views of the River Severn and the rolling hills of South Gloucestershire and Wales beyond, and features, what is reputed to be, the widest bed in England, at over ten feet wide. There’s also a beautiful Victorian Gatehouse with two lovely bedrooms and its own private garden.
“The castle stands in fifteen acres, has its own vineyard and boasts the oldest Tudor garden in England and, the only castle in England to open as a hotel.” ❧ 60 ❧
SO TO BED... We dined at the Castle’s Tower dining room where the menu was extremely tempting. We chose well, starting with scallops, main course of venison and, to finish, chocolate pudding, all of which were cooked to perfection. Next morning, after a hearty full English, we spent our Saturday exploring Bath and then spent a couple
of hours with Denzel Washington in his latest movie The Book of Eli which I can thoroughly recommend. Our last night at the Castle went just as pleasantly and it was a shame that we had to leave but we wanted to pay a visit to Cheltenham on our return journey. We were glad we did. This beautiful spa town boasts gorgeous independent boutiques, gift shops and the most beautifully appointed barbers. The reality of work and home-life dawned on us and, as we couldn’t figure out a way to stay longer, we made our way home with a promise to return. Maybe on our next visit, we’ll see if we can lose ourselves and find each other again in the 10ft wide bed! Many happy returns Mr Roberts! ❧ 61 ❧

THE LAST WORD Mark Roberts is an artist, entrepreneur, drummer, designer and publisher but when he’s not doing that, you’ll find him on one of the Vale’s beautiful beaches. What do you do? I do lots of things. I am a designer, photographer, writer, illustrator and artist but I’m first and foremost a husband and a father and I do them all with varying degrees of competence. I suppose the thing that sums me up the most is that I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve had a reasonably succesful career but this year, aside from the work I do that pays the bills, I’m returning to my first love which is art, so I’m currently talking to a few galleries about putting on some exhibitions and also developing the work that I’m doing into different areas, for example, three dimensional pieces and digital installations. What do you like about the Vale? I love the Heritage Coast. I live five minutes from the sea so whenever I want to walk on the beach I can. In the Summer, we take a portable barbecue, build a fire and spend a few pleasant hours chilling. My son Jack loves this time with us and we take our dog Lucy, and she loves it too! Outside of that, I like Cowbridge on market day, Penarth because of the Esplanade and Pier, Llantwit Major for its history and beach and Barry for its beaches in the winter months. What is your favourite meal? Home cooked chicken dinner, made by my wife. She makes great granny gravy! Favourite place in the Vale? Apart from home which is my sanctuary, anywhere with friends. I’ve met a lot of new friends recently and there’s nothing nicer than going out for a meal and putting the world to rights. Also, I train at Penarth Amateur Boxing Club and I’m never happier than when I’m training or sparring with Neil Munn. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I’d train there every day.
“There’s nothing nicer than going out for a meal and putting the world to rights.”
Best event in the Vale? Half Life 2 Deathmatch (online gaming) on a Friday night with my eleven year old. Other than that, I really like the Vale of Glamorgan Show. It’s the one event of the year that I think showcases what the Vale is all about. Also Cowbridge Food Festival and the St David’s Polo at Fonmon. One is dominated by food, the other appears to be dominated by alcohol but they’re both enjoyable days out. What’s missing from the Vale? Sadly, manners. I can’t stand rude people and I think if we are to attract tourists into the area, we need to do more to make them feel welcome and it wouldn’t be a bad thing if we treated each other a little nicer here as well. What do you do to relax? I’ve always played the drums so I have an electronic kit which drives my wife insane. However, it keeps me sane. Do you have a pet hate? Bad manners and dog poo. Favourite music? I honestly love anything and everything from classical to pop. If it’s good, I’ll listen to it. I was in Seren Boutique, Cardiff with my wife recently and owner Linda had a French female singer playing, which was really chilled, so I couldn’t wait to get back home and look her up on Spotify. ❧ 66 ❧
Favourite holiday destination? I love Mallorca and Portugal. The people are really friendly and I love the Mediterranean food and lifestyle. In this country, Cornwall, west Wales and we occasionally blow the bank and spend a long weekend in London. Sum yourself up in three words... Off the wall. I’m very good at… Motorcycling. I like road riding and off road riding. At twenty years of age, I was the youngest advanced motorcycle instructor in the UK which I’m very proud of. My dad was a police motorcyclist, so I think his influence rubbed off a little. I’m very bad at… The domestic stuff. I’m a bloke. I know it’s there, but I just don’t see it or there’re a 100 things that distract me. In a nutshell, my philosophy is … Assume we’re only here once, and that way you won’t waste any of it.
