WELCOME

What a strange time this has been. Whilst we may have not been touched personally by the loss of a loved one (thankfully), our hearts go out to anyone who has. The pandemic has certainly left some scars that hopefully will heal in time. We have all been so grateful to all essential workers and to those keeping their doors open (where possible), bus and taxi drivers, shop workers and shelf stackers and all those putting themselves and their loved ones at risk to keep the country ticking along. What would we have done without our delivery people? Now that the country has opened up (more or less), we can now go shopping again, have our hair cut, our nails and beauty treatments done and even eat out again. But what have we learned through all of this? Hopefully, we will all be a little kinder to each other and remember what is really important.

always know what’s going on in their lives, so if you do have a few pounds spare to spend, please spend them locally. On a personal note, Mark and I have missed meeting our readers and catching up with advertisers. Not just because we need the income, but we’ve missed the personal contact and, whilst we haven’t missed the deadlines and the stress, it is great to be back doing what we love. We hope you enjoy this summer issue. Keep well and stay safe. Big hugs xx

Will we ever be able to shake hands or enjoy a hug or two? Who knows? What we can do is be kind. Pick up the phone to loved ones and tell them how much we love them, and don’t take anyone or anything for granted. This virus has shown us just how fragile we are, and that life is sometimes far too short. Now more than ever your local businesses need your support. They’ve been through so much loss and stress. They may have a smile on their faces but we don’t

Interior Designer and television personality Laurence LlewelynBowen has joined forces with Connect to Purpose, a charity providing retreats for disadvantaged families, to restore one of Wales’ oldest homes.

One of the finest and most complete early gentry houses in the Vale of Glamorgan, Plas Llanmihangel is currently on the market for £1.3 million. Rather than see it go into private occupancy, Connect to Purpose aims to purchase and restore the Grade I listed fortified manor house, and turn it into a safe and tranquil retreat for disadvantaged young people and their families from across South Wales.

The charity also intends to share the unique historic home with the wider community, by offering bed and breakfast, and holiday rental accommodation for public use; delivering wellbeing retreats and open days, and holding an annual medieval festival of arts.

Help and support offered to families will include personal development coaching, health and wellbeing therapies, education and creative arts (including film-making, art, music and photography), as well as opportunities to commune with nature in the surrounding countryside and play their part in the conservation of the manor.

Staycations, glamping, Airbnb, retail space, treatment rooms, classrooms, luxury garden retreat - the possibilities are endless.

SHEPHERD’S HUTS These superb structures are handcrafted in workshops belonging to UK Hydroslides Ltd based in Llantwit Major, who specialise in research and development of new concepts and products. The company was formed in 1991 and accredited to ISO 9001 so you can be assured of a structure made to last. Gareth and Angela who run this family run manufacturing company, offer these huts sized at 8m x 2.4m, on a towable all terrain chassis, spacious enough for longer term stays for up to four people. With a practical design and fully insulated for all year use. The huts can be purchased fitted out ready to use straight away or bought as watertight shell to furnish and fit to your own personal design, there is also a smaller version at 6m x 2.4m available. The family also run a small farm in South Wales and have recently been granted planning permission for 8 shepherd’s huts and are looking forward to having their own site of Secluded Shepherd’s huts up and running in the near future. If you would like to be the proud owner of one of these classic shepherd’s huts, then please get in touch with ether Gareth on 07715 161772 or Angela on 07734 292744.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, said: “I was lucky enough to fall in love with Plas Llanmihangel over a decade ago, filming its fairytale gothic glory for the BBC series ’Hidden Houses of Wales’. What struck me then, and gives me so much pleasure now, is the fact that this building is such a powerful time capsule, with the ability to take visitors back to so many different, extremely important, moments that defined the history of Wales and indeed the history of the UK.

Trustee of Connect to Purpose, Georgina Saralis, said: “Our aim is to save and sympathetically restore this spectacular property and create a comfortable family home to be shared with the local community and visitors alike. Through a programme of education, therapy, creative arts and coaching, we will offer disadvantaged young people and their families the support, time and space needed to find a way through their difficulties.”

You can help… To help purchase Plas Llanmihangel, the charity has launched a crowdfunding page. Here’s the link: www.bit.ly/3ixjdrj

With this in mind I am compelled to support this extraordinarily exciting initiative to revivify one of my favourite Welsh buildings and use it to help young people learn the skills they need to create the kind of life for themselves that they desire.”

Vale Life Photo Corner Have you seen the Vale Life Photo Corner Facebook Group? Do you love photography? More importantly, do you love the Vale? If the answer to both questions is yes, then we’d love to have you aboard. All we ask is that if you do live outside the Vale of Glamorgan, your images are of the Vale. If recent events have shown us anything, if you’re fortunate enough to have a garden or a spare bit of space around your home, you can plant a few plant pots with flowers, plants and shrubs that will certainly lift your spirit.

CROSS FARM NURSERY Owner Charlotte England with Dave Phillips

It’s certainly true for us. We’ve been learning how to grow our own veg, and our window boxes, tubs and hanging baskets have never looked prettier. When it comes to buying plants, we’re always searching for new places to browse so when we came upon Cross Farm Nursery, nestled away off the A48 near Pentre Meyrick, we were understandably excited. Refreshingly, it’s not too big. If you’re looking for a coffee shop, and twenty outlet businesses, this isn’t it. It’s a gardener-friendly, compact and bijou nursery which sells just about everything you need to bring a sad garden back to life. Cross Farm sell a lot of baby veg plants and an excellent selection of plants and flowers. From annuals and bedding to perennials and shrubs, you’ll find plenty to choose from. There is a good selection of succulents and fruit trees too, plus a good range of manures. We love browsing their poly-tunnels and we always find something special. There’s an excellent array of pots and plenty of advice should you need it.

Owner, Charlotte England says: “We’re a family business and, moreover, we’re keen gardeners. We love gardening as much as our customers.” While we were there we asked several ladies why they visit this particular nursery and they universally agreed it was “the quality of the plants”. Indeed, as we find on every visit, the plants are well watered and well fed so you’re virtually guaranteed to get them in the best possible condition, and this is especially important in summer. So if you’re looking for a gardenerfriendly nursery that’s open all year ’round at the heart of the Vale, pop into Cross Farm, we think you’ll like it.

OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND

James Sommerin built a great reputation in Penarth, with customers from all over the country enjoying fine dining at its best. Then Covid came along and, like so many hospitality businessess, James had to rethink the future.

WELCOME HOME James recently opened The Shed at The Goodsheds which is receiving rave reviews but, after a short sabbatical, he’s now opened up again in the town in which he and his family live. Here we chat to James about his new venture, Home.

Who is involved in Home? It’s a totally family affair. Myself, my wife Louise and our eldest, Georgia, have joined together to open Home. Louise handles the daily management of the business and also services the restaurant. As a mum of three, she also has to be mum, so she’s got a lot on her plate. Our middle daughter Angharad is one of our front of house staff. Our youngest daughter Elin is only ten so too young to take part - yet!

What’s the offering at Home? Home is all about theatre dining. We only have nine tables as we want our diners to have a true chef’s table experience. It’s an honest kitchen with everything on show. The kitchen is the centrepiece of the dining area. We also serve food at tableside as we like to interact with our diners. We offer an eight-course tasting menu at £90 per head.

Working with local suppliers is important to you. Why’s that? We use local suppliers as much as possible. It’s not just another box to tick. We’re being true to our ethos. Our beef comes from Old Cogan, our fruit and veg is from Bishops of Barry. We work with a small number of local growers. We even use our own honey from a plot of land in Dinas Powys.

There’s also a wine flight which we offer to complement the menu. The list is really accessible to everyone. It will be fairly extensive but not mind blowing price-wise. It will include a number of favourites. With only nine tables, the offering will be about the food, the experience and the attention to detail.

What’s the situation with your Michelin star? Do you still have it? Unfortunately no, because of the move, but it’s on our agenda to win it back. In the fourteen years of my career, I’ve never lost it. My cooking hasn’t changed so I’ve every confidence that we will attain it again. Even though The Shed was only opened for seven days, we were inspected by the Guide, and we were delighted to be listed in the Guide for 2022.

Why the name Home? We wanted the name to reflect our ethos. It’s like you’re coming to our home. We ran Sommerin’s at Home throughout lockdown, so the new restaurant is the next phase in our journey. Does it feel good to be back in Penarth? The name says it all - Home! I was approached by a number of businesspeople in Cardiff who wanted to support me by opening up in Cardiff, but we’ve built up a reputation in Penarth and we live in the town. It’s all about work life balance. It’s great that we have just a ten-minute walk to the restaurant. 10

What has inspired the décor? Seduction! Seriously, I wanted diners to be seduced by everything; the food, the ambience and the décor. I’ve wanted to work with Dorian of Project One for a while. We met at his home, and he had wood panelling there which I immediately fell in love with and said I wanted that at Home. There’s a lot of wood, greys, blacks, greys with pewter, stainless steel. The tables were hand-made. The chairs are a plush green velvet but are comfortable. The undertones are forest green. An overall sense of chic but without glitz!

I love attention to detail, so I’ve painstakingly chosen the steel knives from Sheffield, the crockery from Holland, even the music has been hand-picked. It all needs to be perfect. It definitely has the WOW! factor.

What are your opening hours? Wednesday to Saturday, dinner only available on Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm to 9pm (last orders at 9pm). Friday and Saturday lunch and dinner from 12pm to 2pm (last orders at 2pm).

What are your hopes and dreams for Home? I’d love to achieve two Michelin stars. That’s the dream but we’re not breadheads. We don’t need flash cars and a massive house. What we want is to build up the business so that we can pass it on to the kids. We’re delighted that Georgia has taken to the trade. She’s so creative and ambitious. We were so proud that she did so well in the Great British Menu 2020 at such a young age. She was the youngest ever contestant. She trained with me and was the sous chef at the seafront restaurant and, even though she’s my daughter, she doesn’t get any special treatment. She will have an input into the menu at Home.

How can we book? Our website will soon be available but currently there’s a holding page which does include a link to our reservation system.

Opticians can detect a number of eye health and body health problems from looking at your eyes alone. This makes it all the more important to see an optician even if you feel your vision hasn’t changed. Eye tests can help find conditions like glaucoma, diabetes, and myopia.

MANAGING CHILDHOOD MYOPIA In children, it’s even more important to get diagnosed with any conditions that might impair good sight as early as possible. Davies and Jones Opticians, Talbot Green, explains this common childhood eye condition. What is Myopia? Myopia is another word for shortsightedness. It affects one in three people in the UK. It usually occurs when the curve of the eye grows slightly elongated, meaning instead of focusing on the back of the eye, light rays will focus just in front of the retina, making objects seemed blurred.

EyeDream A form of orthokeratology (ortho-k), corrects your vision while you sleep. These lenses gently reshape the curvature of the eye overnight, creating a slightly flatter cornea, helping light rays to focus properly on the retina. Upon waking, the slight change in the cornea curvature is enough to create clear sharp vision for the duration of the day.

If you are myopic you may struggle to see anything at a distance. This can be easily remedied with glasses or contact lenses. At Davies and Jones, they also offer a range of innovative myopia management solutions that can actually slow the development of myopia. They include: Ortho-K Dream Lenses Imagine a vision correction that works while you sleep. Imagine waking up to clear, comfortable vision in the morning, without the need to wear specs or contact lenses during the day at all. Well, imagine no more.

SPECS APPEAL DAVIES & JONES SUMMER SELECTION There’s plenty to get excited about style-wise at Davies & Jones Talbot Green and Dinas Powys this summer. A superb selection of frames with infinite permutations of coatings and customisation. Whatever your image, the Davies & Jones team of optometrists and sight care specialists have the knowledge and experience to find a frame to suit. And with their world class eye testing and digital scanning expertise, you can relax knowing you’re in safe hands. 14

EyeDream is perfect for children who suffer from mild to moderate shortsightedness and want to enjoy clear, natural vision all day, without the use of contact lenses or specs. Without the limitations that come with soft lenses, it is also ideal for the active lifestyle your child may lead.

But what if your child is too young or can’t tolerate contact lenses? There are solutions to help which include:

MYOPIA MANAGEMENT

MiYOSMART Lenses A revolutionary new spectacle lens. Using a technology called Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS), these lenses change the focus of light rays on the retina in a way that has been found to not only give the wearer clearer vision, but to manage the growth of their eyes and reduce the rate of myopia progression. All whilst looking no different from a normal pair of specs!

Myopia has become more prevalent during the recent COVID 19 pandemic.

Mandy Davies, owner of Vale Laser started in the busy town of Talbot Green. So successful is the clinic and, in particular laser hair removal and HIFU (HighIntensity Focused Ultrasound), that she has now opened another clinic with her business partner Julie Volpi, and increasing her team to cope with demand. Mandy made time to tell us more.

VALE LASER

16

How long have you been registered? We’ve been registered since 2014 and last year opened a second clinic in Canton where we offer an additional service of tattoo removal. What treatments does Vale Laser offer its clients? We offer laser hair removal, laser thread vein removal, skin tags/blood spot removal, pigmentation, skin tightening, resurfacing, skin rejuvenation, tattoo removal and electrolysis. Which treatments are proving the most popular at the moment? HIFU is extremely popular for us. It is a high-intensity focused ultrasound, nonsurgical facelift which tightens and lifts the skin and stimulates new collagen production. There is no downtime, it’s pain free, and anti-aging. One treatment takes around two hours and it’s recommended once every twelve to eighteen months to replenish collagen levels. We also have a new resurfacing laser which works amazingly well for skin resurfacing, acne scarring and stretchmarks, so together with the HIFU it’s a great combination treatment for skin rejuvenation. We also have a medical grade vascular laser which offers laser thread vein removal as an alternative to needles or Intense Pulsed Light. Often, thread veins are removed in just one session. We truly believe we have the most effective treatment for thread vein removal. Our business is based on alternative solutions to injectable treatments and predominantly energy based treatments. Hair removal is a big issue for both males and females. Tell us about your hair removal procedure. We use very high powered pieces of equipment which uses exceptionally powerful cooling giving comfortable, quick and effective results. Six sessions are recommended, once every four to six weeks, to capture all the hair growth cycles and clients will notice hair reduction from the first session. Is it a good idea to start young when it comes to treatments? With HIFU, we would suggest clients start treatment from age 30+ as collagen levels start to deplete from this age. With laser hair removal, we are covered from 14 with parental consent on an individual needs’ basis but the large majority of clients are 18+ as hair growth can be stimulated by many different things including medication, menopause, childbirth, anything that can potentially fluctuate in your hormones. Where will your third clinic be based? We are delighted to be opening our

third clinic soon in the Porthcawl area. Keep checking our Facebook page for exciting announcements! Do you offer free consultations? Yes, all consultations are free. Do you offer payment plans? Discounts are given for block bookings; however, we offer monthly payment plans depending on individual circumstances. We also offer reduced ongoing fees for clients suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) as hair growth is an ongoing problem. What do you love about what you do? Seeing the difference in confidence levels in my clients after a treatment plan is so rewarding. I love that I can make a real difference to someone’s life for the better. It doesn’t feel like work to me, it’s very true that if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life! What do you think makes Vale Laser special? I think the practitioners make us special. We offer treatments that we know work and are treatments we love ourselves. We have a friendly and relaxed clinic which makes clients feel safe and welcome. It feels like you’re seeing friends all day as you get to chat about all sorts of topics and the time flies by! We also have flexible pricing policies, which was always in my business plan right from the start, to make laser treatments accessible to all, so we strive to make sure that everyone gets the help they need. TESTIMONIALS

What customers say… I opted for the HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) facelift after it come highly recommended by many friends and I’m so thrilled I did. The results after only a week are so noticeable. I can’t wait to see further improvements as the weeks progress. Mandy was amazing! So knowledgeable! Pontyclun is a rising star. The high street has its fair share of excellent independent businesses and there are exciting developments in the pipeline. Ask anyone on the street “why is it so good?” and you’ll get a pretty consistent answer. There’s a real sense of community spirit, and people here pride themselves on shopping local.

It boasts its own railway station, good bus links and plenty of parking (although you can always have more), good schools and a decent rugby club. It’s sisters (Talbot Green and Llantrisant) are a stone’s throw away so the community benefit from this too.

The business community is equally positive. “We all try to support each other!” says Louise De-Vyliers. You do get a sense of real camaraderie here. Beth Giles, owner of Giles Gallery regularly runs courses and workshops where people get together not just to ’be creative’ but also to socialise. “It’s a lovely vibe!”

Louise DeVyliers opened Miss DeVyliers in Pontyclun offering casual/smart clothing and accessories over three years ago and has built up a client list to rival many boutiques in the Vale.

MISS DEVYLIERS

& BOUTIQUE BOX AT MDV

What has been the response to the new addition? We’ve been stunned at the positive response. Clients say that they love the one-to-one service and the fact that they may have had a vision of what they wanted before they walked in and then, with gentle guidance, tried our suggestions on, loved them and left with something completely different! They also say that they love the girly atmosphere, non-pushy sales technique, and personal service. As more and more women were asking for special occasion wear, Louise decided that she would expand the business and offer occasion wear, prom dresses and accessories and she hasn’t looked back. We chatted to Louise to find out more. So, it was your customers who made the decision for you to offer occasion wear and promwear? Yes, we were busy enough with the casual wear but with so many customers asking for this service, I couldn’t refuse! How did you create Boutique Box at Miss DeVyliers? I knew Helen Pick of Elegance in Treorchy and Sally Evans of Boutique Box well, and when they told me they were both selling their businesses and already had a mix of amazing brands and an equally amazing clientele, it made so much sense to me to buy both their businesses and include them within Miss DeVyliers.

What do both elements of the business offer? We aim to offer our customers stylish clothing that’s a little bit different – offering great value for money. The range goes from casual to classy, day wear and evening wear. When I started, my aim was to help women more of a mature age and all sizes, who could have lost their way in fashion and give them some helpful, personal attention. But now I find my customers are any age from twenty upwards. We also offer a gorgeous range of bags, shoes, and costume jewellery. We are also proud to be stockists for the extremely popular Clogau gold jewellery. Boutique Box at MDV offers stunning mother of the bride and groom, and guests stunning outfits to make them stand out on the big day. We also offer a range of hats which can be dyed to match the outfit. Also on offer are a fab range of prom dresses, evening wear and cruise wear. 22

Do clients need to book an appointment? No, everyone is welcome to walk in and have a look around. If, however, they would prefer a more one-toone experience, then they can give me a call and we can arrange for a no-obligation experience where they would get my full, undivided attention.

There’s a new boutique shopping experience that’s the talk of the town and that’s Venetia Steele. This gorgeous boutique set in the beautiful garden of owner Nicola’s home is full to the brim of clothing and accessories. Intrigued? Let us introduce you to…

VENETIA STEELE

What’s your background Nicola? I was an Area Manager for Monet Jewellery for 20 years and Store Manager for Karen Millen and Armani Exchange. I have always had a passion for fashion and have also always wanted my own boutique. During Covid I turned my dream into a reality by building a structure at the bottom of my garden which now houses Venetia Steele boutique. I love working with women over 40 who have lost faith in the high street, have lost a little of their confidence and are no longer sure of what suits their everchanging body shape but still enjoys clothes and want to look great. With my many years’ experience in styling women, I encourage them to try things that show off their assets and hide the bits that they don’t like. What does Venetia Steele offer? I offer a range of beautiful clothing to suit all ages in sizes 8 to 22. You can also find scarves and silver costume jewellery to complement each outfit. The style is smart casual, but you can also wear a few of the outfits to a social event and you would certainly stand out from the crowd. Also, because I don’t stock items that you can find on the High Street and only hold a few items in the same size, there’s little chance that you will be wearing the same outfit as someone else. My stock changes constantly, so there’s always something new to see.

You’re very active on social media? Yes, my Facebook page is constantly being updated with videos of me wearing new items. In my opinion, ladies like to see the items physically, on a body, so that they can see how it might look on themselves. Do you have a website? Yes, it’s in the info box below and it’s also regularly updated with videos of new products. Ladies like to come to the boutique to see what’s new but if they can’t get here for some reason, then they have the website as a backup. What makes Venetia Steele special? There’s an open door policy on a Saturday but, during the week, ladies can book a private visit which they love. They say that they also love the one-to-one personal experience that I offer. It is like having a boutique all to yourself! I also suggest items that they might not consider and they generally love them! I genuinely love what I do, and I love it when a lady comes in not quite sure what she wants and then leaves with pieces that she not only looks good in, but feels a million dollars too! It makes what I do worthwhile. 25

I do like Cowbridge. It punches above its weight and, as well as the beguiling boutiques and lovely eateries, it has a few incredibly special places. One of my favourites any day of the week is the Physic Garden and it’s somewhere I must go every time I visit Cowbridge; but, on Thursdays, that’s when you see the real magic happen.

THE HEALING GARDEN

The roots of the Cowbridge Physic Garden were established in the mid eighteenth century when the Edmondes family acquired Old Hall. They improved the house and developed the gardens. After the family’s departure in the 1920s the site became, successively, a kitchen garden for Cowbridge Grammar School and a tree nursery for the local authority. By the end of the twentieth century, it was an overgrown wilderness.

It’s transformation into the “oasis of calm” you see today was started by the Cowbridge Physic Garden Trust in 2005, and in June 2008 the Physic Garden was officially opened by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall who is patron of the garden. It is nestled within historic walls, adjacent to the old Cowbridge Grammar School. Although small, just half an acre, it is packed with fascination, and many horticultural gems. All the planting carefully reflects species that have at least a twohundred-year heritage. The beds are arranged formally, as they would have been in physic gardens of centuries ago. Many of the plants grown have traditional healing properties, either relating to certain parts of the body, or particular conditions, such as childbirth; and then there are beds for culinary use or dyeing fabrics. 26

It should be noted that this is all ’historic’; none of the plants now grown should be ’consumed’ in an attempt to rectify an ailment or condition! But, overall, it is the sense of peace and calm for which the garden is rightly renowned. There are plenty of spaces to sit, be still, and enjoy the birds and the plants and flowers themselves. Yet all this is just a short walk away from the ever-popular Cowbridge High Street.

The one thing you soon realise; it’s not just the plants that have healing properties here, it’s the people too. Yes, Cowbridge is a truly special place at the heart of the Vale, but it’s made a little more magical because of the Physic Garden and those who tend it. Pop in next time you’re in town, I can assure you it’s very good for the soul.

I mentioned Thursday as being a particularly special day at the Physic Garden. It is on Thursdays you realise that creating this beautiful vision relies on the hard work and dedication of a truly special group of ladies. Each Thursday, the garden is lovingly tended by this loyal and knowledgeable group of volunteers, with spades, forks and watering cans; they are always happy to chat with visitors, dispense gardening advice and, occasionally, sell plants. As well as providing exceptional and valuable gardening expertise, the volunteers themselves derive great benefit from their activities. Gardening, as I’ve found myself, can be an exceptional stress reliever. It’s no surprise then that their comments remind us of the healing properties of the ’PG’ as it is affectionately known.

COWBRIDGE PHYSIC GARDEN

Their positive comments include “I find the garden such a relaxing place to be”, “being a part of the gardening team brings me great satisfaction and peace”, and “I am also learning a great deal from the other more experienced gardeners”.

“I like working in the PG because the enthusiasm is infectious, and the knowledge base is second to none.”

What volunteers say… “It’s a uniquely lovely garden in which to enjoy the privilege of being a volunteer.”

“Within its walls lies a haven of quietness and calm, away from a busy world.”

Cowbridge Physic Garden The garden is open every day of the year (apart from Christmas Day) and entry is free. www.cowbridgephysicgarden.org CowbridgePhysic CowbridgePhysicGarden Next to the Physic Garden are the equally pretty and enthralling Old Hall Gardens - well worth a wander.

We must admit we weren’t sure what the new business was that sprung up in Broad Street so, being nosey, I couldn’t resist a look around to find out more about BFS.

BOOMERANG FURNITURE STORE

Luckily, there was a lovely chap on hand who explained there’s more to this store than meets the eye. Yes, it’s a furniture store but it’s also a charity… When was Boomerang established? Boomerang was established in October 2016 but gained recognised charitable status on 5th May 2017. Who is the owner of the business? Paul Gwilym is the founder of the charity, Boomerang Cardiff (1172898). Why did he decide to open this business? What’s his background? Where do we start! Best place would be the following link: bit.ly/35i9xKU What’s the ethos of the business? We set up specifically to help the working folk who fall on hard times, and the homeless demographic. Under the umbrella of Boomerang Cardiff, there are four sections to the project: n Homelessness/Prevention of Homelessness n Poverty, In work poverty/Critical Living Conditions n Community Engagement/Education n Social Isolation/Loneliness Our charity moto/strapline is: No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

What products would we expect to find at Boomerang? In short, you will find furniture at Boomerang. In the Boomerang Furniture Store shop Barry, all band new items of furniture with all proceeds of sales going in to help sustaining boomerang Cardiff’s charitable work. How does it work with regards giving back to the community? Who benefits? Our service users in Cardiff are ultimately the ones who benefit. When a homeless family or individual are given the keys to a property that is unfurnished, we have a robust service level agreement with The Housing Options Centre of Cardiff Council to provide them with a basic essential home starter pack which is free to the service user and heavily subsidised to Cardiff Council.

Contained within this pack could be: n A bed for each bedroom n Wardrobe or chest of drawers for each bedroom n Bedside cabinet for each bed n A sofa n Coffee table n TV unit n Dining table and chairs n Washing Machine n Cooker n Fridge freezer n Microwave n Boomerang Starter Pack (plates, cups, glasses, dishes, crockery, utensils, pots and pans) The shop in Barry also offers space to small independent/craft business. How does this work? Which businesses are already in place? The idea behind it was to give small startup businesses, a shot at success where they may not have had the opportunity before, due to financial constraints.

We have six small business that operate out of Boomerang Furniture Store. This is a unique opportunity because we have tailored each contract to each small business. We are not charging them rent or utilities for the space, but we have a pre-agreed percentage of their monthly turnover, which essentially is a no risk opportunity! The business inside are:

You mentioned that you had other projects in the pipeline, could you tell us about those? We are just finalising a National Lottery Bid to purchase the land and units that we currently occupy in East moors Road to essential create a 1-stop poverty park so regardless of what type of poverty you are faced with, whether that be food, fuel, financial or material, you will be able to receive help

We are also currently constructing an indoor sports facility (mainly football, but other sports) to be used by children’s teams only. Teams find it very hard to train through the winter months, with the daylight not lasting too long and the British weather not being too kind either. There is no affordable indoor training for children’s teams with spaces that are available, often costing over £100 per hour to rent. We know this can be at a fraction of the cost, and because we are a not for profit, we can pass on the savings to the local community. We also have an idea called The Penthouse Project, but this is way further down the line, and nothing is really finalised and set in stone with this yet but stay tuned to our social media to find out!

It’s been a while since we visited Hilary & Iain’s Kitchen By The Sea in Ogmore, so we were champing at the bit. So on a glorious summer day in June we were back at one of our favourite Sunday lunch venues.

SUNDAY BEST

HILARY & IAIN’S

NOT JUST SUNDAY LUNCH Hilary had often told us that the vibe there was completely different during the evening and she was right. It’s amazing how lighting and different music can make such a difference in atmosphere. Had our son not been with us, it could have been romantic (yes, even after 26 years together!). The food was, as always, amazing. Jack went for the homemade “Mega Burger” topped with BBQ sauce, bacon, cheese melt, mushrooms, and gourmet chunky chips (£11.95).

He’s a bit of a plain eater so left out the sauce and mushrooms, but he couldn’t get over the size of the meat burger and even struggled to eat many of the chips as a result. It was a gigantic hit. We chose the griddled rump of Welsh lamb accompanied by a rich minted red currant wine gravy, served with fresh vegetables and potatoes (£13.95) Mark had this option and, as Hilary and Iain know of my food intolerance issues, they gave me Iain’s special 30

gluten free Yorkshire puddings and gluten free gravy and lots of cabbage for me. As always, the lamb was tasty and tender and we both polished off the lot. If we’d have had any room in our bellies, we could have had a dessert. Hilary’s selection of mouth-watering home-made cakes were calling to us from the counter-top but neither Mark nor Jack could manage one. This is home cooking at its very best. From Iain’s hand cut steaks, a selection

Booking is important here because Hilary & Iain’s covers have more than than halved - space inside is limited. If it was quirky, compact and bijou before, it’s even more so now. One caveat, if you’re looking for a slick, cad-designed bistro, this isn’t it. My way of summing it up for friends is ’imagine you’re abroad and you want to know the good places, where the locals eat, this would be one of them’.

I have to add at this point that portion size is plentiful. Even the biggest rugby player’s appetite would be satiated. We rarely rate anyone’s food 10/10 but, on this occasion, Hilary & Iain’s definitely hit the mark. You get plenty of meat, lots of perfectly cooked veg and a generous gravy boat (don’t get me started again on the gravy - it’s gorgeous). Iain’s roasties are unbelievably good too, as are the parsnips, and the cauliflower cheese is to die for.

This cool little bistro is, refreshingly, substance over style. Their cooking is like the best home-cooked meal you’ve ever had and, more importantly, it’s consistent. Something that many restaurants across Cardiff and the Vale simply cannot deliver. We must have enjoyed Sunday lunch here over a dozen times in a year and every time we leave saying the same thing: “That was excellent!”

It’s quirky, and with the new screens in place even more so, and we still love it. It has always been one of our favourite places to eat in the Vale but, after months and months away, is the food still as good?

Don’t forget to book. But, if you do, tell them Vale Life sent you (or Cabbage Girl, as Jen is affectionately known - she always asks for extra cabbage).

Fret not. Nothing has changed. In fact, it was all the better for the enforced abstinence. Iain and Hilary were their usual cheery selves but, you could tell, the pressure of conforming to so many rules and regulations had weighed heavily.

A few words to close… The hospitality and food industry has been hit incredibly hard by Covid. Even now, small business owners like Hilary and Iain are under tremendous pressure so cut them some slack. They’re all doing their best and, if our experience is anything to go by, their best is pretty good indeed.

Nevertheless, they delivered a faultless Sunday lunch. Lamb, excellent. Vegetables, perfect. Roasties, superb. Gravy… oh my God, the gravy is off the chart (and there’s a gluten free option).

We’ve all clapped for the NHS over the last several months - we’d argue the hospitality industry needs a round of applause too. Clap away, we are.

of the freshest fish dishes and their famous lasagne are just a few examples on the menu. Hilary’s homemade desserts and cakes are now legendary so leave room for one! Hilary and Iain by the Sea 87 Main Road Ogmore-by-Sea CF32 0PW 01656 880661

Takeaway… Takeaways are available and by far the most popular is the Cod and Chips. Always check on their Facebook page or give them a call to ensure they haven’t sold out.

The Turks have a saying for every occasion. They are, as someone once described, “bookends to each conversation”. Many are known as ’ata sözü’, which literally translates to ’words of our ancestors’. They are often full of wisdom and kindness. When it comes to food, the Turks are arguably the most welcoming and hospitable, and Mehmet Yadiz, owner of Keyif in Penarth, is no exception.

K ATCHING UP WITH

KEYIF We’ve dined many times at Keyif in Penarth. Each time the food has been excellent - it almost goes without saying. What makes this brilliant little Turkish restaurant so special is the warm welcome everyone receives when they visit. Mehmet, owner and host, is a delight - a true gentleman. He always makes us feel at home and I think that’s what makes Keyif so special.

There’s definitely a cultural thing going on here. Turkey is renowned for its hospitality. Socialising is big in Turkey and the Turks love to serve. Family is everything and big family meals with lots of plates are the order of the day. Keyif is no exception. Whether you’re having a family get together (check out the shots of diners on the walls) or dropping in for a quiet drink with friends, or perhaps a lunchtime bite with a business associate, Keyif delivers.

32

Owner, Mehmet Yidiz

“We’re so lucky to have this wonderful little foodie jewel in the Vale.” Talking about delivering, Keyif doesn’t provide home deliveries, although you can call and collect (Keyif Kollect). Mehmet and his team stayed open right through the pandemic. A tall order but he was adamant that he wanted to be there for the people of Penarth when they have been so supportive since he opened.

I have to agree. Every time I have visited Keyif, I have left feeling good with the world. It has that vibe - a rare thing. So many restaurants nowadays feel contrived, fake even. I suppose this is the world we inhabit these days. Thankfully Keyif is an oasis of calm and authenticity, and we’re so lucky to have this wonderful little foodie jewel in the Vale.

If you do a quick search on Google, ’keyif’ translates as ’pleasure’. I asked Mehmet what his philosophy is, what does Keyif mean to him? “It’s a very personal thing,” he says. “It is that quiet moment when you’re enjoying a coffee, relaxing outside a café and a cat strolls by. It’s when you’re out with friends enjoying a glass of roki. It’s great food and good conversation. It’s fun! It’s when your mind is free. It’s when you are at one with yourself and the world. This is Keyif.”

The Turks have a saying: “Etekleri zil çalıyor” which loosely translates as “The bells on their hems are ringing”. This lovely phrase basically describes someone who’s very excited. It’s how we feel whenever we visit Keyif.

TURKISH SAYINGS YOUR ARRIVAL IS LOVELY

“Hos geldiniz” Said as a greeting to visitors to make them feel at home. MAY YOU LIVE LONG

“Çok yasa” Turkish for “bless you,” çok yasa is said after someone sneezes. The sneezer then replies “sende gör” (may you also see my life) or hep beraber (may we all have many more years to live). HEALTH TO YOUR HAND

“Ellerine saglık” Usually said to someone who has created something beautiful with their hands, particularly to a cook or a Turkish mum after she’s cooked up a feast for her family. 33

“With cooked aubergines mixed with peppers, tomatoes, olive oil and various seasonings, our “baba ganoush” is a perfect example of how our dishes are made freshly everyday!” says Mehmet, owner of Keyif Turkish restaurant in Penarth.

RECIPE: BABA GANOUSH The word combination of “baba” and “ganoush” are often interpreted as “father of coquetry” from Arabic. Baba ganoush is a delicious, smoky aubergine dip made by cooking whole aubergines until blackened on the outside and softly steamy on the inside. Try it with a middle eastern flatbread such as Maneesh.

In a pestle and mortar, crush the garlic with the lemon juice, tahini, olive oil and pepper. When cool enough to handle, cut the aubergines in half and scoop out the flesh. Mix the soft flesh with the remaining ingredients. Place in a serving dish and finish with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle the parsley over the top.

Ingredients 3 aubergines 3 garlic cloves, crushed with a teaspoon of salt 1 lemon, juice only 2 tbsp tahini 3 tbsp olive oil Black pepper, to taste 1 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley

Try it first at Keyif! You can enjoy Baba Ganoush as an accompaniment to the many delicious dishes available at Keyif Turkish Mediterannean Cuisine, Penarth.

Keyif 21 Glebe Street, Penarth CF64 1EE 029 2070 2429 info@keyif.co.uk www.keyif.co.uk

Method Prick the aubergines with a fork. Grill the aubergines until the skin is charred and blacked and the flesh feels soft when you press it (this will take approximately 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through cooking).

Love pizza, but want to keep it healthy? Make this low-carb cauliflower pizza crust. Only six ingredients and so easy!

RECIPE: CAULIFLOWER PIZZA CRUST Cauliflower pizza crust is arguably the most fun way to eat cauliflower! It’s obviously not the same texture or flavour as a traditional doughy pizza crust, but it’s so delicious! It’s crunchy around the edges, has a hint of roasted cauliflower flavour and tastes just like pizza. Ingredients Riced cauliflower Garlic Part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese/ goat’s cheese Egg Dried basil Dried oregano Method To make cauliflower rice. Remove the stems and leaves from your cauliflower and chop florets into chunks. Add to a food processor or blender and pulse until the texture is similar to rice. If you don’t have a food processor or blender, you can grate the cauliflower with a cheese grater or chop it or buy pre-riced cauliflower.

Sauté cauliflower rice. In a non-stick pan. over medium heat, cook the riced cauliflower until translucent – about 6-8 minutes. This step is key and really helps to dry out the cauliflower. Combine crust ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the cooked cauliflower with the garlic clove, shredded cheese, egg, dried basil and dried oregano. The cheese may melt a bit during this process, but that’s okay. Make crust. Line a baking sheet or pizza stone with parchment paper and grease with olive oil. Spread the dough out evenly on the baking sheet and form into a circle. You’ll want it to be about 1/4 inch thick. Bake crust. Bake at 400ºF for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden, crispy on the edges and cooked through the middle. Add toppings. Remove the crust from the oven and set the oven temperature to grill. Top the crust with pizza sauce, cheese and any other toppings you’d like. 34

Grill the pizza for 5 minutes or until the toppings are hot and the cheese has melted. Allow the pizza to cool for 2-3 minutes before cutting and serving. Can pizza be healthy? Yes! 100%. If you cut this crust into 8 slices, each piece of crust (without toppings) has only 75 calories, 5 carbs and 5 grams of protein! There’s no need to feel guilty about eating a few slices… several times a week. Enjoy!

During lockdown we’ve all either sent out for deliveries or have been cooking up a storm in our kitchens. This is a simple but totally delicious tray-bake recipe that Ben Griffith of Butty Bach, Barry has shared with us.

RECIPE: SPICED CHICKEN SUPREME

It’s one of the recipes Ben offers as part of his Date Night Packages. He loves making this during the warmer months so that he can enjoy it, sat in the garden in the evening with a cold glass of wine. He likes to serve this with a crisp salad dressed in the minty dressing. A nice healthy dish that tastes a bit naughty! This dish serves four people.

Ingredients 4 Chicken Supremes 800g 2cm diced potatoes 1tbsp curry paste 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp mustard seeds Handful curry leaves Thumb size piece of ginger, peeled and chopped into matchsticks 2 tsp turmeric 4 cloves of garlic, finely sliced 1 aubergine 2cm, diced 1 red pepper 2cm, diced 1 orange pepper 2cm, diced 1 large onion 2cm, diced 2 chillies finely, sliced 4 tomatoes, quartered

Method Place the chicken in a bowl a stir in the curry paste to cover the supremes, leave to marinate for one hour.

Dressing Bunch of mint 150ml plain yoghurt ½ green chilli Small piece of ginger, peeled Juice of half lemon

Spread the veg evenly on the tray and pace the marinated chicken on top, place tray into the oven for 45 minutes.

Boil the diced potato for 10 mins in salted water then drain. Pre heat oven to 190. Place a roasting tray onto the hob on a medium heat, pour in the olive oil. Tip in the mustard seeds/curry leaves/ turmeric and ginger. Fry for a couple of minutes. Add the potatoes/garlic/ aubergine/peppers/onion/chillies and tomatoes, stir through for around five minutes on the hob.

For the dressing, place all ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth. To serve, spoon the veg evenly across four plates then place the chicken on top. Drizzle with some of the dressing then use the rest to dress your crispy salad. Check out the Butty Bach feature on pages 74 and 75.

The last eighteen months has been a wild ride for many businesses. It’s certainly been a little stop-start for Davies Motors. Owner Sean Davies is ready to go.

START YOUR ENGINES

You had a great 2019, and 2020 looked hugely promising. Things were really going well and then Covid. How did that affect the business? Yes, we’d had a really good couple of years prior to the pandemic. We’d been constantly improving and streamlining our business and those refinements and tweaks, combined with our growing reputation, meant we were much more on the radar, especially with the owners of the supercars and hyper-cars.

How are things now? Really good. Everyone is back out on the roads and some appear to have forgotten how to drive, so the workshop is flat out with repairs and customisation. Also, many people have been building up cash in their bank accounts because they haven’t been spending, so we’re finding people investing in little treats for their vehicles like colour-coding and customisation.

We closed briefly during the lockdown but pretty soon we were open again and busy - there were plenty of essential workers on the roads and they needed repairs as usual. Touch wood, we ticked over nicely and have managed to weather the storm.

Why do you think owners are coming to you to repair and renovate their vehicles? We’ve earned an excellent reputation for exceptional quality and finish. Brands like Bentley and Aston Martin are incredibly choosy when it comes to who does their bodywork repairs. They have exceptionally high standards and there is absolutely no cutting corners ever. Since things opened up we’ve seen some truly gorgeous cars in the workshop. South Wales never fails to surprise me and the owners are as passionate as we are. 36

I have a fantastic team of really talented people. They love working on these cars and producing beautiful work. Nothing gives us more pleasure than seeing cars leave the building in perfect condition and the owners’ huge smiles. What kind of customisation are people choosing? We do a lot of colour matching. A customer might want the wing mirrors in the same body colour or a stripe, or a complete respray! Dechroming is big. Clients want all the chrome blacked or colour coded. We also do lots of brake calipers; Italian flags are popular on the Italian marques - Union Jacks on the Astons. It’s fun! And really sets the car off. What are your plans for the remainder of 2021? Maintain the quality - keep improving. It’s brilliant being out in front when it comes to quality and service, but I suppose it’s a little like gaining a Michelin star if you’re a restaurant, you have to maintain it. So if we end 2021 producing the same or better standards of work, that’ll be another win for us.

“Many people don’t realise that they don’t have to use their insurer’s nominated repairer.”

Capello was created by Franco Calliva in 1994 as a unisex salon. After twenty years of busy trading, Franco’s son took over the business and created what it is today - Capello Barbers.

CAPELLO EXPERIENCE A TRULY BESPOKE HAIRCUT Alessandro has created a unique barbering brand that still holds his father’s legacy very strongly. These family-run, independent and eclectic barbershops are a blend of the modern and traditional, serving up some of the best haircuts in the world. We caught up with Alessandro to find out more about his new shop in Penarth. When did you open the doors in Penarth? We opened our doors in Penarth on Monday 15th March, 2021. Why did you choose to open in Penarth? I have always loved the vibe in Penarth - we feel our brand definitely ties in with the premium feel of Penarth. We also thought the demographic of Penarth would resonate with our brand - similar to that of one of our other branches in Pontcanna. We also can see Penarth becoming slowly gentrified, and we wanted to be part of that for the future.

What services do you offer your clients? We offer bespoke haircuts, beard trims and wet shaves to our customers as well as a range of premium hair products. We offer these services for all ages - from toddlers to seniors! How have you been received by your fellow shop owners in the arcade? Wonderfully - everyone has been so welcoming and helpful throughout the process of us opening up! Big shoutout to the guys in Windsor Fruits. How have you been received by your clients? Amazingly! People really love the shop which is great to hear after all the hard work we put in designing it. We’ve met some awesome people local to the area and also attracted some existing customers who live near this new shop. 38

Where do your clients come from geographically? Surprisingly all over, but the majority come from Penarth, Dinas, Cardiff Bay and Wenvoe. What do clients say they like most about your offering? They like the atmosphere and the attention to detail we offer - our USP is a truly bespoke haircut, we pride ourselves on actually listening to the customer.

What do you think makes the Capello offering special? All of the above - it’s our mission to create a really accepting and welcoming atmosphere to everyone and anyone who walks through our doors. We no longer want a visit to the ’barbershop’ or getting your haircut to be an errand but rather a welcoming and comfortable experience - leaving with a haircut you actually want.

Do you offer hair care products? Yes, we have created a range of products based on the foundations of our brand background, values and ethos. Designed with easeof-use in mind, our products can combine with one another to create extremely effective results whilst maintaining your hair health.

Gents of Brooklyn, Penarth, is a traditional barber with a difference. Owner Lois Raymond Welsh created his first barber shop in Cardiff five years ago and has since re-created his second (with a few tweaks) at Windsor Road, Penarth. Lois tells us more.

GENTS OF BROOKLYN

What can clients expect from you? What we offer is no ordinary barber experience. What you get is understated luxury and relaxation at affordable prices. Our cuts start from £15 and the most expensive is £25. In both barbers, clients can enjoy male grooming which can include facials, hot shaves, eyebrow grooming and nails whereas in Penarth there are additional treatments found in high end spas including massages and waxing.

Who are your customers? Gents ranging from sixteen years old to fifty wanting an experience like no other. Penarth has a new look. Tell us more. Yes, it’s had a total refurb, from floor to ceiling. Each barbers have the same quality theme and style. We’ve learned a lot from our first venture and have made upgrades in Penarth. As it is bigger, we’ve been able to push the boat out and make it even more luxurious. 42

Do you sell your own products? Yes, our Rouget standard and premium collections are amazing. They consist of shampoos and conditioners plus grooming products. What standard of barbering do you offer? We prefer to train our barbers inhouse. I’m a perfectionist and won’t employ a barber who can’t do a better job than me. Our barbers’ can create any look from buzz cuts, crew cuts, Ivy league, businessman/peaked, Caesar

cut, fades, undercuts, asymmetrical, faux hawks, blocked and tapered necklines and many more. Do you offer discounts for OAPs and students? Yes, we offer a healthy 20%. What makes Gents of Brooklyn special? Definitely our service. From the moment a client walks through the door, we take it all in. We give free consultations to assess their lifestyle, the way they like to dress, their

personality. All these factors have a bearing on the style of cut we suggest. We’ve had clients say they want a mohawk for example and then, after we make our suggestions, they end up with something completely different and more in keeping with their lifestyle. We want our clients to be able to kick back and relax so we provide coffee (hot and iced), soft drinks, and mocktails, all enjoyed while watching TV. We are in the process of applying for our alcohol license, so watch this space! 43

Situated in the centre of Barry, “The Goodsheds is the first new, sustainable, urban high street in the UK where people can work, eat, live, and play.” The Goodsheds is a mixture of the best independent food and drink, boutique retail and lifestyle cleverly combined with spaces to do business. There’s even an independent coffee drive through, thanks to Junction by Academy.

THE GOODSHEDS The Goodsheds, one unique setting, in one unique town, is split into three unique locations, true to the original dock setting, and each with their own personality and offering. Food The Shipyard at Goodsheds is home to the absolute best in independent food venues, set on the fringes of Barry’s working docklands where you can book a table, or stop by and grab a take-out. At the Shipyard there’s everything from deep fried ice-cream waffles to Greek souvlaki; to authentic Indian street food to Craft Beer and Gin, and a Michelin quality restaurant at the original Sidings building! Shopping Complementing Barry High Street, it showcases independent retail, with the best in boutique fashion, homeware, and lifestyle. It also boasts one of the most unique retail settings in the UK, with the tracks and makers - sitting on original railway tracks, two Gatwick Express railway carriages have been transformed into four new spaces forming the opening of the urban high street. With a combination of an exclusive cinema/ event space, delicatessen, greengrocer and independent florist, The Tracks redefines shopping. Simon Baston, Developer of The Goodsheds, is delighted with how the project is being received by the residents of Barry. “The Goodsheds to date, even during this stop-start process, has become everything we hoped it would be in terms of its collaboration with the

local community and its environment. The scheme itself has brought together a fantastic and eclectic mixture of businesses, all independent, all with a local supply chain and with a great affinity towards Barry. The Goodsheds Team hopes to move the site from strength to strength.” The Events Company which specialises in weddings, birthdays, company days out etc. will also be available within the next year with twenty starter units inside an innovative tech area to the east of the site. Also, The Goodsheds will be providing five carriages that will be converted into one-bedroom apartments with their own gardens, which will effectively act as a short term stay for tourism, family, friends, business etc., but will add to the experience of coming to The Goodsheds and hopefully see the site as a microcosm of where Barry is going in general. “Finally, within the next nine months, we would like to bring a permanent farmers market, Friday to Sunday, on the site, which will be available to everyone to book on a monthly basis, weekly or even by the day, to give everybody an opportunity to get involved in this highly sustainable, low carbon footprint environment.”

I met entrepreneur Simon Baston a few years ago when the original concept of The Goodsheds in Barry was being discussed. I thought then what an amazing concept that was. An area dedicated where people could work, eat, live and play. His concept has now come to fruition and I couldn’t wait until lockdown had eased a bit more so that I could enjoy it to its full capacity. Having been born and bred in Barry, concepts like this really warm the cockles of my heart as seeing excellent quality businesses being conceived and built in my hometown shows that Barry is definitely on the up.

The Shed is a modern and contemporary eating restaurant owned by husband and wife teams, James and Louise Sommerin and Liam Murphy and Sarah Weaver.

THE SHED The ethos behind The Shed is to provide really good, unusual food at a price point that everyone can enjoy on a regular basis. All things Welsh are important to this quartet, and they are proud to have used local craftsmen who have constructed the entire restaurant to be as sympathetic to its setting and heritage. They have used locally sourced and reclaimed materials to show the important connection between the Shed’s industrial past and present and the role this plays in creating a sense of community and integration. The wood for the tables tops came from original timber reclaimed from the Barry Docks area and the slate for the bar and pass came from old snooker tables! Promoting local Welsh produce is also at the heart of The Shed. James works with dedicated local suppliers who share his commitment to delivering excellence and sustainability. He even has his own chickens and bees!

Porthcawl is enjoying a decent summer. Porthcawl (a Fair-Trade town), comes alive when the sun is shining. Its numerous cafes, bustling high street and expansive esplanade make it a real magnet for tourists. Combine this with Coney Beach, the beautiful Sandy Bay Beach, some of the best chippies in South Wales, a few decent golf courses and a bustling high street (not forgetting New Road) plus the Pavilion, and some pretty smart eateries and yes, life is pretty good in Porthcawl.

And in the winter its storms are legendary. So, all year round Porthcawl has something to offer residents and tourists alike. As Elvis once said: “You only pass through this life once, you don’t come back for an encore.” Debateable, but people sure keep returning to Porthcawl. Uhuh! Thank-you-very-much.

PORTHCAWL The Wig Shop in Well Street Porthcawl has been in business for three years, but owner Michila Harris’ journey started over 25 years ago on Kensington High Street, London. We chatted to Michila to find out more.

THE WIG SHOP

What’s your background? When l first moved to London, the look at the time was the iconic red, long, Cher wig and Madonna in the black pixie crop. I remember having my hair cut just before I left for London and being devastated learning everyone had long locks and I felt so boyish! My best friend Kyle, who is still a huge inspiration and international wig stylist, tried a long back hair piece in blonde on me and, from there, I was hooked and have worn hair since.

Who are your customers? There are many different reasons why someone may need a wig, and this is key to identifying the reason at the beginning of any consultation. I cater for women, men, teenagers, children, and any gender. Covering issues like hair loss due to treatments like chemotherapy, alopecia - hair thinning due to medications and Menopause. Today women are wearing wigs simply for ‘FASHION’ to change their look, colour or simply to enhance their natural hair.

I have been lucky to have travelled to Italy and Spain during my wig career specialising in weave hair extensions too.

I also sell hairpieces which are great to add body and length, hair extensions and all wig accessories.

Our customers were young fashionistas looking for a new look experimenting with colour and style. We designed wig ranges, showed at hair exhibitions, and styled for magazines with the odd celebrity. Moving back Wales has allowed me to work with a diverse range of people for their own specific needs.

Like any great product, wigs have evolved in many ways which makes them look extremely natural in synthetic and human hair. I now stock blended colours for depth, lace fronts and monofilament scalps which gives a lightweight finish. I stock all the best wig brands including Raquel Welch, Gabor, Kyle Kaine, Hairdo, Natural Image, Toni Brattin and many more. What makes The Wig Shop special? The customer experience for me is most important - to boost a person’s confidence is such a delight; this drives my passion and inspires me daily. 56

The Fruit Bowl, Porthcawl is a quality wholesale and retail business in the heart of the town centre. This family-run business prides itself on their outstanding customer service.

THE FRUIT BOWL, PORTHCAWL Customers to this outstanding fruit and veg shop know the benefits of shopping with an independent retailer. The Fruit Bowl offers produce at the peak of ripeness; plants’ natural sugars increase the taste and provide better nutrition. There is no doubting the difference in flavour and texture between supermarket quality and locally grown food. Vegetables in supermarkets are often several days, weeks or even months old before they even reach supermarket shelves, usually because of longdistance shipping or storage. The majority of the fruits and vegetables at The Fruit Bowl are fresh from the suppliers without refrigeration or gassing to stimulate ripening process. Fruits and vegetables sourced locally are grown without using pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and genetic modification. By shopping here, you can buy organic produce grown using sustainable techniques - good value in comparison to expensive “organic” fruits and vegetables on supermarket shelves.

The Fruit Bowl is doing its best to offer more and more produce with less plastic packaging therefore doing its bit for the environment which is important to us now and for the future. The Fruit Bowl also offers local free delivery. Pop in and be served by a friendly face or give the shop a call to arrange your order and delivery. TESTIMONIALS What a little gem of a place. Service they provide is exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. Beautiful fresh produce. Extremely friendly staff. Claire Stone

Messaged my order last night and arrived this morning, fantastic service. Highly recommended. Eunice Eynon Had our first delivery from the fruit bowl today, it was fantastic value for money, the produce is excellent quality and the service was so friendly and a pleasant stress-free process. Porthcawl is a popular beach resort, so you’re really spoilt for choice where to buy your fish and chips. But in Mansel’s fans minds there really is only one place and, according to customers of this particular chippy, that’s…

M ANSEL’S CHIPPY

“CONEY’S FINEST FISH & CHIPS” Porthcawl and fish and chips go hand-in-hand as one of the classic combinations of a day out in Wales in the summer. You can’t beat sitting overlooking the beach in the sunshine with a serving of piping hot, freshly cooked cod and perfectly cooked chips watching the world go by. Mansel’s is a traditional fish and chip shop which has been serving residents and visitors to the seaside town for the last eleven years. You’ll find all your traditional favourites, including fish and chips, faggots and peas, and curry, plus all your usual chip shop gems. At a loose end on a Wednesday and want a treat?

Then head on over to Mansel’s for the Wednesday deal: two fish and chips for £11 (which includes a free tea or coffee with your meal). Now that’s an offer not to be missed!

“We come all the way from Ystrad Mynach to go here. The gravy is to die for, lovely food.” Debra Osborne

Gluten free options served daily. Mansel’s also has an outdoor seating area - perfect for soaking up the Porthcawl summer sunshine. “This is a hidden gem and really is lovely with a great service also lovely staff.” Gavin Murphy “My parents and I love coming to for our fish and chips and cups of tea, you’re the best place in Porthcawl.” Rebecca Jones

Who doesn’t love a good old school café at old school prices? Well, that’s just what you get at Mansel’s Village Farm Café in Pyle.

M ANSEL’S VILLAGE FARM CAFÉ The business had been trading for twenty years before Mansel took it over several months ago and, with his reputation of serving possibly the best fish and chips and more at his chippy in Porthcawl, it’s no wonder that this great café is on many a stop off for workmen, bikers, couples, and families alike. What can you expect to find at Mansel’s Café? Yes, there is the usual fish and chip shop fayre - perfectly cooked chips with fish, sausages, fishcakes, pies, and the like. But you’ll also find baked potatoes, small, medium, and large cooked breakfasts, breakfast rolls, and curry and rice.

Speaking of curry and rice, call in on a Thursday or Friday and there’ll be Indian chicken curry, half and half, and a poppadum on the menu - all for £6.95! From Monday to Sunday there’s an excellent cooked lunch available, served plated to your table. An adult’s serving is £5.50, and a children’s portion is half price (excellent value for money). Sunday lunches are proving most popular, and this is served to the table with vegetables served in tureens. Sunday lunches are £8.20, again with children’s portions at half price. There’s an ample sized car park to the side of the property. Assisted dogs only are welcome. Just five minutes from the M4, Mansel’s Village Farm Café makes the perfect stop off for some honest, home cooking at its best. 58

Robert Charles Owen James was born on 21st January 1951. He was a much-loved husband to Christine Ann James and father to Penny, Sophie, Gemma, Joanna and David.

A LIFE CELEBRATED

ROBERT “ROB” JAMES

Rob owned Robshop, a hairdressers in Porthcawl, and was an admired and well respected member of the Porthcawl’s business community. We were in Porthcawl on the day of Rob’s funeral and the large turnout for him demonstrated the community’s love for him. Vale Life spoke to Rob’s family to find out a little more about his life. Please describe Rob’s background… Rob grew up in Porthcawl and educated at the local Nottage Primary School. He then progressed to Porthcawl Secondary Modern where he discovered his love of art. Rob was then accepted at Cardiff Art College in 1966. On leaving Art College, Rob pursued a career in hair fashion by taking up a position with Lance Hair Salon in John Street, Porthcawl. Rob dreamed of having his own salon and before not too long he opened ’Robshop’ in Suffolk Place where he continued to thrive until his retirement in 2017.

What were his hobbies? What did he love to do? His love of art and music was paramount, and old, vintage cars which he loved, followed closely by Levi Jeans. Astronomy and antique collecting were also keen interests. How do you think Rob will be remembered by his peers and his family? He’ll be remembered for his care and kindness towards all his family and friends, and loyal clients. And, most of all, being the most perfect father and grandfather (known as Bumpa) to all his grandchildren. What do you think is Rob’s legacy? He will live forever in our hearts and memories for his wonderful kind and caring ways and the strong and meaningful advice he gave to us all. Family was everything to him. Rob’s wife Christine had a large part to play in Robshop by introducing beauty and hat hire called ’Hats the One’. They worked alongside each other happily for twenty years and were together for thirty years. 61

Blu Hair Design have always been a salon that is one step ahead of the trends. As more and more of us want to enjoy the benefits of beautiful hair but also care about how our hair products are made.

BLU GOES GREEN PENARTH SALON INTRODUCES VEGAN PRODUCTS BRAND

That’s why Blu Hair Design work with the Wella Professionals brand. They have recently launched a vegan brand which is being very well received by customers. We chat to owners Hayley, Alexis and Abi to find out more.

Not only are the bottles recyclable but the ingredients are cruelty free International approved, Vegan Society Certified, contain no sulfates or silicone, the ingredients used are of natural origin, dermatologically tested, are professional performance approved and fight ocean plastic.

Why do you and your customers love the Wella Professionals products? Wella is a brand that specialises in hair care, styling and colouring products and are leaders in the marketplace. They have now launched we/Do Professional, a fully vegan range and we were very keen to be able to offer these products to our clients.

What are the hero products in the range? Customers love the No Plastic Shampoo Bar, the Sulphite free shampoos and conditioners and the range of hair masks for fine, normal or damaged or coarse or very damaged hair.

What does we/Do Professional offer? Not only are the products fantastic but they also help to fight the increasing problem of ocean plastic ruining our environment. For instance, for every product bought, eight plastic bottles are removed from the environment. The bottles used are 100% recyclable. As a salon, we’re conscious of how we can help the environment through sustainability and living greener.

What has been the response of clients? Fantastic! I think we can all agree that small changes can make a big difference and weDo/ is encouraging us all to make more environmentally conscious decisions when making hair and beauty purchases; by looking at the product ingredients, packaging and certifications which have a minimum impact on our world. During the month of September we will be introducing a refill station so that any vegan products purchased can be refilled at Blu! 62

Rhiannon Aimee Cooksey, owner of Blush Beauty in Llantwit Major has been very busy during lockdown. She has refurbished and redecorated the salon to what you see today – inviting, glamorous and utterly gorgeous.

BLUSH BEAUTY

Blush Beauty Salon & Training Academy offer a huge range of beauty treatments including gel manicures, eyelash extensions, luxury pedicures, eyebrow lamination and much more. In 2022 they will be offering a number of beauty training courses to those who want to step into the beauty industry, looking for a career change or just to refresh and update your skills. Vale life popped into for a catch up. Hi Rhiannon, how has business been since you have reopened? Business has been fantastic since re-opening. I can’t thank my clients enough for supporting me. The past 12 months has been very testing times for a lot of businesses during the pandemic and I feel very lucky to be back open doing what I love again. What treatments have you found have been most popular since you have reopened? The most popular treatment since I have been back is most definitely brows and lashes - I joke with my clients that since we have had to wear masks good brows and lashes are essential. I also find now going into the summer months our pedicures will become increasingly popular, and now thanks to our incredible new pedicure station that our clients are absolutely loving, I will be spending most of this summer giving clients the perfect pedicures.

What do you think makes Blush the go-to salon? It’s definitely the affordability of our treatments along with the personal touch. Since reopening I have gained a lot of new clientele, which is absolutely lovely to be meeting new people regularly. I’ve also had a lot of compliments regarding the look of the new salon which has been very uplifting after all the hard work that has gone into creating a new environment for myself, staff, and clients.

We currently have space in our salon for self-employed make-up artists, nail technicians and hair extensionists to join us here at Blush - if you would like any further information, please contact Rhiannon Bell at rhiannonaimeebell@gmail.com.

How can you book an appointment at Blush? We now have a new online booking system which has been fantastic! Our clients love it! All availability and bookings can be done over at www. blushbeautysalonandacademy.co.uk or by calling us on 01446 677007.

“Skin is our thing,” says owner and Lead Skin Therapist, Emma, when asked about her services. Emma and her team believe it is possible for everyone to improve their skin health and appearance. Whether you want to get rid of unwanted hair or tattoos, or you are seeking a more youthful radiant complexion.

V ALE LASER CLINIC EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS CAN HELP

Vale Laser Clinic offers treatments to deal with rosacea, acne, pigmentation, red veins, lines, wrinkles and more. Emma’s dedicated skin therapists are results driven and will proactively treat your skin concerns to return your skin to its natural health in the shortest time possible. You will see realistic, tangible results and you will be confident and proud of your skin. Here, Emma shares her top five skincare tips… 1. SPF. Always SPF… Not just on sunny days and don’t rely on the SPF in your make up, it’s just not enough. Sun damage is responsible for 80% of premature aging and exacerbates all skin concerns such as pigmentation, acne / rosacea. Find a face specific one that fits in with your lifestyle, under make up, tinted coverage, etc. Then apply Every. Single. Day. As UVB light is present 365 days a year, penetrates cloud and glass and ages your skin, you need daily protection, reapplied more often on sunny days. 2. Face cloths, ewww… Face cloths are like your underwear – used once and washed. When left damp after use, they are a breeding ground for bacteria. Buy a bundle, you can put them in with any load of washing and always have clean ones available.

3. A radiant dawn begins at dusk… Evening skincare doesn’t have to wait until bedtime. Mind blowing but it’s true. Do it when you are home for the evening, putting the kids to bed or getting into your comfies. There’s a smugness to settling down with a book or box set knowing your skin is clean and the active serums are working on making your skin healthy earlier than bedtime. 4. Sleep like Cinderella… There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep. Getting enough sleep makes everything better. We make better food choices, move more, have better digestion, less stress, and have more productive, clearer thought processes. These all link to our skin health, support it to be healthy and glowing. While you’re sleeping, your skin is recharging, repairing damage and re-energising for the next day. 5. Keep it simple, but effective… The foundation of your skincare routine is simplicity. Your skincare needs to work for you, we want you to be consistent with your routine to really reap the benefits of healthy skin. This can be as little as three products or as many as you like. My morning routine takes two minutes, I’ve put it on our Instagram page for you to see. Emma says: “Trust your skin to Vale Laser Clinic. It’s an investment for the rest of your life.” Give them a call today. Your skin will thank you for it!

You might know 27 High Street as your local Specsavers opticians, but did you know the Grade II listed building actually dates back to the 17th Century?

SPECSAVERS COWBRIDGE SIGHT OF SPECIAL INTEREST

Records from the Cowbridge Historical Society found the building was first used as far back as 1691. Since then, it has been a number of inns, a bakery, greengrocers, cake shop and a retail outlet for women’s clothing.

The ten-strong team has also taken part in a number of events and supported local groups, including sponsorship of the Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival and donations to a local scout group. The store has also sponsored Cowbridge Cricket Club for two years running.

But the latest twist in the path for this historic building came three years ago when local opticians Adam Thomas and Hannah Davies opened Specsavers, with third owner Andrew Moss joining the team months later. “Cowbridge is a truly unique town with a strong sense of community,” says Andrew. “As a result, we know how important it is for us - as a locally-owned business - to engage with residents and go beyond just providing a service.”

Andrew adds: “We’re proud to have grown our business and helped out with local projects and events, and I look forward to see what the next three years will bring - and beyond.” Specsavers stores throughout Wales remain open for all eye care and hearing needs in accordance with government guidelines. Customers are also asked to request an appointment in advance by phone or online through the Specsavers website to help manage social distancing and minimise time spent in store.

The store, opened with a £300,000 investment in April 2018, has two test rooms and state-of-the-art equipment, including an optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine. The OCT machine is a hospital-grade device that develops a 3D scan of a patient’s eye and can detect certain common conditions such as glaucoma up to four years sooner than usually spotted.

Summer is here and with restrictions lifting, it’s now time to introduce some changes to enjoy life post-lockdown! Angharad Brown offers some sound advice.

CHANGE IT’S AS GOOD AS A REST

DETOXIFICATION

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT

Unfortunately, we live in a polluted world, which is exacerbated even further by our intake of processed foods which are full of chemicals, using chemical laden skin products and even when we think we are being healthy by eating fruit and vegetables, these are often sprayed with toxic insecticides.

As they always say, ‘you are what you eat’, and what we put into our body, has a direct impact on how our body functions, which ultimately impacts on how we feel.

Here are some tips on how to reduce your own toxic load and give your body the support it needs: n Drink filtered water n Avoid your allergens and intolerances n Avoid refined sugar n Clean your fruit and vegetables thoroughly before peeling n Choose organic, grass fed meats and free-range as often as you possibly can n Check the ingredient list of your personal products (especially hand sanitisers)

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Daily we are bombarded with negative news stories, which can create feelings of panic and fear. These emotional reactions elicit a stress response, which is directly linked with our immunity. However, by making some small changes, you can take control. Make time for yourself: mediation has been shown to combat stress, grab a book and light some Clary Sage essential oils.

“Social media detox: it’s time to free yourself from the streams of endless memes and selfies!”

Vitamin C This vitamin is important to help your immune system deal with viruses, especially cold and flu viruses. Vitamin C is found to be more effective when taken at several times during the day. Glutathione is the superhero antioxidant, the best strategy to ensure that it is being produced by your body is through N Acetyl Cysteine supplements.

OTHER SUPPLEMENTS

You should also consider introducing these supplements to your diet, your body will thank you as these have been found to fight off viruses! n Vitamin D3 n Magnesium n Zinc n Selenium These simple changes can be introduced today and may be the best resolutions for our post pandemic world. If you are looking for a more tailored approach which focuses on detoxification as well as nutritional and emotional support to regain/improve your health, contact Angharad today. 67

Having been born and raised in a street off Holton Road and a regular shopper of Holton Road, I have seen many businesses come and go over the decades. It used to be the street upon which to be seen in Barry. Since the department store Dan Evans closed its doors in January 2006, Holton Road has looked a bit sad but, thankfully, it’s looking far healthier and vibrant now thanks to several new indie businesses. The focus of Holton Road has always been the impressive King Square. This was originally known as the Town Hall Square after the Town Hall was opened in 1908 and then renamed King Square.

The buildings on the square are impressive and underwent much renovation in the early 2000s. Barrians will remember that there used to be a fountain structure in the centre of the square, but this was removed after constant ’foaming’ by a few enthusiastic pranksters! At Christmas time, the Council erect a massive Christmas Tree with fabulous lights, but the square is equally popular during the summertime with many residents taking the weight off their

HOLTON ROAD

feet and enjoying a coffee or bite to eat or simply watching the world go by. The businesses run the whole length of Holton Road and continue through to a few of the side streets. There are the inevitable larger chain stores and charity shops but, thankfully, more and more small, independent businesses are popping up. Perhaps the Council and landlords are recognising that some income is better than none and an empty shop! If that is the case, long may it continue!

MUCH LOVED EATERY

Fountains Tea Rooms Fountains Tea Rooms has been a tradition in Barry for 50 years and it’s easy to see why. For the last 17 years it has been owned by Kath Marzano. Kath has recently redecorated, and it now boasts a fantastic Alice in Wonderland theme. What makes Fountains Tea rooms so popular? Undoubtedly, it’s the scrumptious all-day breakfasts: Sylvester Stallone (large), Mel Gibson (medium) and Danny De Vito (small), the delicious home-made meals and snacks and speciality coffees, all served with a friendly smile.

When it comes to family, security is everything. Home security especially. Fortunately, we live in a part of the Vale that doesn’t have huge crime issues. We’re also members of a couple of local social media groups that, for the most part, do a fair job when it comes to letting everyone know if there are undesirables about or any ’incidents’ in the area. That being said, it’s better to be safer, than sorry.

GET SECURE

GO GREENPOINT! Vale Life chatted with Director Kris Price, owner of Greenpoint Security & IT, at his shop on Holton Road in Barry about their services and how they can help businesses and the public protect their premises and homes.

What services do you offer? We offer IT and security services. The business was established in 2007 and back then we offered repairs and spares for laptop and PCs. Since then we have expanded with the industry repairing almost all IT related gadgets. Tell us about the security side… While setting up networks and helping with IT support we were constantly being asked about security systems. With this in mind, we decided to create Greenpoint Security. This has been one of the most exciting decisions I’ve made in business as I’ve always had an interest in security from a young age, I’ve found that a lot of the technology requires lots of principles I’ve learned in IT so the overlap has helped me grow the business quickly.

“I enjoy making our customers feel more safe and secure in their own home or business.”

Is Greenpoint an environmentally friendly company? Our security systems are state-of-theart technology. They are all designed to be energy efficient given the tasks they have to do. With new energy and technological developments, I’m sure in the future they could be energy neutral if powered by solar etc. It’s not that far away - probably in the next decade. On the IT side, our ethos is very much recycle and reuse. We are constantly repairing phones, PCs, laptops etc. We live in a throwaway world so if we can fix something economically that has to be a good thing. If we can’t reuse or repair a component, PC or laptop, we have a recycling company that collects from us every couple of weeks and they make best use of the materials and components – they are specialists. What geographical areas do you cover? Right across the Vale, Cardiff and as far east as Newport. Because we’re based in Barry, we find we can be more competitive than Cardiff based companies. Gareth Slattery opened The Butterfly Collector back in August 2018 aiming to be the first ever micropub for The Vale of Glamorgan.

THE BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR Since then, this cool little venue has been nominated for multiple awards: The Sun newspaper’s Pub of the Year and SME National Business Awards Pub of the Year 2019. Vale Life dug out its magnifying glass for a closer look… So, what is The Butterfly Collector? As well as being a micropub selling a wide selection of real ale, ciders, craft beers and a wide range of gins and much more. There is also live music every weekend as well as quiz nights, comedy nights and free cheese board on a Sunday evening. Who goes there? This warm and friendly business offers table service and as soon as you enter, you are rewarded by knowledgeable staff who can talk you through the tasting notes on the ales available or also provide tasters for ales and ciders. You’ll find poets, artists and folk who like to gather here, but it’s the artisan ales which bring in the customers.

How does it work? Some might think it unusual but at The Butterfly Collector, they offer a tab system which is a good way of instilling trust in its clientele. What do customers say? They say that they have an amazing evening full of music, banter and great conversation. Here are just a few: “Awesome decor, great host and most importantly fantastic beers and ciders!” “Regular love music and vast selection of alcoholic drinks.” “Nice place, shared tables, good ales, G&T only £5 for a double, great service.” 73

Ben Griffith has always had a passion for cooking. From cooking at home for his family, to running street food outlets and, more recently, opening his own café, Butty Bach in Barry.

BUTTY BACH

Vale Life caught up with Ben to find out more… You’ve always loved cooking then Ben? Yes, I’ve always cooked for my family. Proper home-cooked meals cooked from scratch with good, fresh ingredients. They enjoy my bacon pancakes dipped in maple syrup, bubble and squeak patties, and they love my brownies! You didn’t always work in the food industry… No, I had a managerial job in a local supermarket, but my heart always drew me back to cooking. The job was really stressful, so I decided to leave that and follow my heart. I’m not saying that what I do now isn’t stressful but it’s a good stress! You opened a food trailer during lockdown… Yes, I noticed that there was a building site in my village, Rhoose, and being resourceful, I set up my trailer in my property and sold my street food from there to the workers. Word soon got around how good the food was that the local residents came to buy from me.

I then came up with new offerings like Date Night Boxes every Friday night which proved really popular. The boxes had food for the kids which they could eat early and then food for the parents which they could eat later. They cost £16 per couple. I collaborated with Sarah’s Fruit and Veg who supplied veg for the boxes. I’m still offering these now in Butty Bach as they are so popular! And here we are at Butty Bach! Yes, the opportunity presented itself for me to open up a café in Holton Road and I took the plunge. Then came lockdown! Now we’re in full swing again and it’s great! What’s the offering? We offer quality food at reasonable prices. We start the day with our breakfast deliveries from our brunch menu and a choice of coffee delivered to your door. The Farmer’s Breakfast is our biggest draw at £7.50 (veggie option £8). There are also our breakfast, bacon or sausage bagels at £6 and £4.50 respectively. 74

Our burgers are now legendary. We use only the best beef with our own special in-house blend of seventeen herbs and spices. They have to be seen and tasted to be believed. We go from a classic (£5) to Cowboy (£6.50), to the Stack-em-Up version (£6.50), all served in a brioche bun. We also offer our chicken burgers from our Classic Clucker (£5), to Smokey Clucker (£6.50), and our Spicy Clucker (£6). We also sell a variety of chicken wings. There’s also a range of sides from fries (£2.50), onion rings (£2.50), and Rissole and Glamorgan Bites (£3.50 each). Not forgetting the little ones, there’s a kids menu of burger, sausage or fish fingers and chips, served with a Fruit Shoot, ketchup and a little treat. All for £3.50. Our Butty Bach Date Night menu is also going down a storm with Spiced Chicken Supreme with all of the accompaniments and an Indulgent Chocolate Orange Brownie for £14 per couple (excluding £2 - £5 delivery charge). What about desserts? Not just for the kids, there’s our stunning House Milkshakes and, of course, our awesome brownies. I started with just a few flavours and now we’ve expanded those to include 35 flavours! We sell them in boxes of different flavours chosen by the customer. Popular varieties are Jammie Dodger Blondie, Turkish Delight, Triple Chocolate and Malteser to name a few. Customers also love our Mars Bar and Snickers Cookies - they are delicious! You like to collaborate with local suppliers… Yes, I like to support local wherever possible. We get our meat from Barratts Fine Meats in Rhoose, our eggs from Mother Hen Eggs, our bread from Windy Wick Bakery, Wick. Our coffee from Durstons in Bridgend, fruit and veg from Sarah’s in Barry, our cheddar cheese and butter are also Welsh and our jam and honey are from New Farm, Barry.

What makes Butty Bach special? We don’t like to blow our own trumpets but we’re happy to let our customers do it for us. Here are a couple of comments we’ve had recently.

We hear you like to help the youngsters in the community? I like to give back to the community and our staff are all local. My niece works with us in the kitchen. She’s learning how to make our brownies and cakes. She’s really talented. I also like to take on youngsters on the Government schemes and train them up to become confident, skilled young people.

Have heard a lot about these burgers so thought we would give them a try ... not disappointed at all ... the BEST burgers we have had in a long time. Thankyou Butty Bach. Amazing food ... generous portions. Delivered on time. Will definitely be back for more. Wyn MacPherson

How many covers do you have? We have twenty-six covers inside and twelve outside. Do you have an alcohol license? Yes, alcohol is available. Again, with as many Welsh products as possible.

We had the sizzler burger and cowboy burger! Best burgers we’ve ever tasted! Highly recommend! Delivered piping hot! Thanks again Ben & Vanessa! Kathryn Bowen

Tonight, was our first experience with Butty Bach - excellent service, food arrived within the delivery time arranged, food turned up and smelt delicious and tasted even better definitely worth treating yourself to some food here you won’t be disappointed! Donna Bale Martin 75

In the Vale of Glamorgan’s burger battles, there’s a new kid on the block. A few kids actually, and they’re led by the burger king (in waiting) Jon Venners, otherwise known as The Bapman.

THE BAPMAN!

A SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Okay, we’ll cut the drama, there aren’t any burger wars raging in the Vale, and Jon isn’t a kid anymore. Far from it. Jon is a retired police officer who worked for the Met, South Wales Police and National Law Enforcement for thirty-one years.

Things don’t happen, they occur). The club were approached by a third party to provide catering, so Jon thought he’d have a go - purchased a van from Glastonbury (where most burger vans begin their lives) and spent a few thousand pounds making it Bapman ready.

Jon, a proud born and bred Barry boy, returned home after working in London for ten years and ended up working across the UK for sixteen years, where his expertise and appreciation of ’fast food’ grew. “We were always on the go,” says Jon. We’d grab a burger whenever we could and soon worked out what was a good burger and what wasn’t. We were connoisseurs!”

Then an opportunity came along to place the van at LBS (it took him two years to get the pitch). There, in the early mornings, he perfected the Bapman Special. Actually, he had quite a lot of help from Ben Griffith of Butty Bach. “He taught me how to cook a great burger using his special seasoning,” he says. “I am deeply indebted to Ben, without him none of this would have been possible.”

Although the ’force was strong’, Jon retired from policing nine years ago and, being relatively young, got a job with Dow Silicones to keep active. Jon is one of three Directors of Barry Rugby Club and that’s when the ’lightbulb moment’ occurred (remember, we’re in Barry.

Jon is a huge supporter of Mind, especially the “It Takes Balls to Talk” campaign - he saw a lot during his time in the force (two of his mates committed suicide). “I wanted to do my bit,” says Jon. “I want to help get disadvantaged kids into work. During my years I’ve watched

youngsters with emotional and physical issues get overlooked. Most of the time, these kids just need a break.” Jon would just like to thank the lovely people who have supported him including Nino Spiteri, Len Hughes, Ben Griffiths of ’Butty Bach’, Gareth of LBS, Barry Athletic Ltd and Andy Farmer who have helped to make the Bapman possible. You can follow the Bapman on Facebook. Jon and Andy are regular posters and, thankfully, their burgers are better than their videos - just saying.

One of the many lessons that the pandemic has taught us is that working doesn’t have to be rigid. People are flexible, so why can’t our jobs be? Perhaps it’s time join the Work From Home revolution, from our gardens!

ESCAPE TO THE GARDEN

With the Welsh Government’s ambition for 30% of Welsh workers to be working from home or near home, even after the threat of Covid-19 lessens, our working culture is expected to change.

As the lines between home and the office have blurred, for many the garden has offered a break away. However, the boundaries have also started to blur between home and garden which has resulted in the garden acting more as an extension of the home.

For many, the thrust into home working has allowed for much more flexibility to manage their work-life balance. From avoiding morning traffic jams to embracing more time with the family, there have been many practical elements to working from home that have boosted productivity and motivation.

The working from home revolution Home and garden renovations have increased significantly since the start of the pandemic, with the flexibility of home working causing a shift in lifestyle choices and priorities for many. This change in priorities has seen a huge focus on improving our home environment to make the time we spend there more enjoyable. As we see the increased likelihood of home working as a long-term reality, it is important to consider what will benefit us most to help balance homelife and work. Garden office luxury Having a bespoke office in your garden can have numerous advantages, offering a space to regain focus in to help increase productivity levels.

However, it is no understatement to say that many home workers have struggled with separating home and work life. From those attempting to transform their dining table into a desk, to those struggling to get the quiet space they need, there are a number of reasons that ‘working from home’ (WFH) has been trying for many. As a beloved popular BBC daytime TV programme has shown us over the years, there are many benefits to ‘escaping’ our usual environment to somewhere more tranquil.

The options available for garden buildings have increased hugely over the past few years, as well as the level of comfort and luxury that they offer. If you are looking for a bespoke design, there are options available to create your own unique building to suits your needs and lifestyle. Whether you’re looking to strike a pose in your own yoga studio or enjoy a peaceful, stylish workspace, a luxury garden building can help you to enjoy your garden all year round. 79

Llantrisant Guildhall Heritage and Visitors’ Centre received a royal seal of approval with the visit of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

LLANTRISANT

GUILDHALL A ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL

The royal couple spent almost an hour at the 14th century building which has undergone a £1.4million refurbishment thanks to the fundraising efforts of a handful of volunteers. They were met by Guildhall Manager Dean Powell and Guildhall Trust Chairman Martin Hooker and walked to the ruins of the nearby Norman Castle which has royal connections.

The royal couple heard how its founder, Richard de Clare, saw his daughter Margaret born at the castle in 1252 and she went on to become the Duchess of Cornwall, while in 1326 Edward II spent a night at the fortification - although under duress! Their Royal Highnesses enjoyed performances by the children of Llantrisant Community Primary School and Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llantrisant before being introduced to Bob Bannister, an experienced longbowman and Chair of the Lions and Lillies Re-enactment Society. 80

Bob regaled Their Royal Highnesses with stories of the Llantrisant longbowmen who fought at the Battle of Crecy for Edward, The Black Prince, who took the three ostrich feathers from the enemy king as a treasure of battle - to become the Prince of Wales feathers.

When the Prince asked Bob to fire the longbow he replied, “As this is a weapon it can only be fired under royal command my liege.” With Prince Charles’ authority, Bob fired one of the longbows at the overgrowth surrounding ruins of the Castle. “He’ll never find that arrow,” the Prince quipped. A performance was also given by the young dancers of Afon Community Dance Group under its leader Louise Prosser. 81

The royal couple were introduced to local business owners including Bronwen Thomas and Gill Stanridge of Model House Craft & Design Centre, David Ritchens and Kevin Morris of Bull Ring Stores and Colin and Ceilo Edrop of The Bear Inn who have supported the Guildhall project. During the visit they met Llantrisant Town Trust and also the team of twenty-two volunteers who run the Guildhall as a tourist attraction, spending time talking to each and every one of them.

On meeting 78-year-old Freeman David Powell, a former Welsh Guardsman who stood guard for Princess Margaret, the Prince said, “We must look after these old Welsh Guardsmen of ours. What a remarkable man!”

Their Royal Highnesses unveiled an impressive slate plaque to commemorate the visit before a final performance of “Cwm Rhondda” by the massed voices of Llantrisant Male Choir, Llantrisant Ladies Choir and Cor y Bryn.

Once inside the building they viewed both floors and learned of the history of Llantrisant’s Mace, dated 1633 and older than the one used in the House of Commons. The Prince held the treasure and reminisced of his time spent with the late Sir Cennydd Traherne, a former Lord Lieutenant and Freeman of Llantrisant. Accompanying the visit was the Lord Lieutenant of Glamorgan Peter Vaughan, who is also a Freeman of Llantrisant one of 1,200 around the world.

The Prince of Wales said, “What you have done here is absolutely remarkable. It’s a marvellous achievement!” Llantrisant Guildhall celebrates the history of the town while also providing an activity centre for school groups, concerts, guest speaker evenings, ghost walks, medieval fayres and community events. It is also available for private hire and is a splendid wedding venue. 82

View2Rent was established in 2007 to provide professional and reliable management services to both landlords and tenants in Porthcawl and the surrounding areas and became recognised within the industry as award winners for customer service excellence in 2018.

VIEW2R ENT THE RENTAL AGENCY FOR PORTHCAWL

Deere and Son Limited trading as Elwood Deere Estate Agents & Property Management recognised the success and achievements of View2Rent and were subsequently delighted to complete the acquisition in September 2020. Vale Life chatted to Craig Baldwin ANAEA, Managing Director and Partner of Deere & Son Ltd, to find out more.

Any good business reputation relies on great staff. Did you retain the excellent View2Rent team? Yes we were delighted that Alison Durham and Karen Wallis both wanted to work for us led by Jemma Baldwin Rental Manager. Our clients love them and they were, and are, such an asset to the company.

Congratulations on acquiring View2Rent. What will View2Rent bring to the table? View2Rent already had a fantastic reputation in Porthcawl and surrounding areas but we intend to build on that reputation by moving the business forward and embarking on a fresh approach by completely rebranding the business.

TESTIMONIALS

What does that approach look like? A brand new website, integrated software systems and a full office refit to name just a few of the changes made to relocate the business into the rear of 44 John Street Porthcawl CF36 3BB.

Friendly and professional all along. This is the second time I’ve used Elwood Deere and on both occasions they have been faultless. I would highly recommend them. Antonio Panicola

Lockdown for all small, independent Welsh businesses has been hard, especially as they haven’t received the same level of funding as other nations. When the first lockdown eased, they had to spend thousands getting their salons Covid ready, only to be shut again when the R number increased again. It’s been, excuse the pun, anything but sublime.

SUBLIME HAIR

Now that the situation is easing and more and more businesses can open again, hair salons across the Vale are once open again for business, albeit with strict guidelines in place. We chat to owner Vanessa of popular hair salon, Sublime, Rhoose to find out more.

How supportive have your clients been? We have built up a fantastic clientele over the years and many have sent personal messages of support, which has been lovely. They’ve all commented that it’s been quite upsetting going without a haircut and colour and are so glad that we’re back.

How has lockdown been for you? In the words of Nessa of Gavin & Stacey “I’m not going to lie” it’s been tough, financially and emotionally. We would get excited at the prospect of opening, get started and then be told we had to shut again. That’s been the worst thing. We had to spend thousands getting PPE, screening, and sanitiser stations with no guarantee that we could open. Incredibly stressful.

Are you still having to stick to guidelines? Yes, all the guidelines are being adhered to. All clients and staff wear masks and hands are gelled as they come in. Appointments are staggered so that social distancing is ensured. Staff then sanitise all stations after each client. It all takes more time obviously, but we will do all we can to make our clients feel safe when they visit us.

The worst thing though is not being able to provide the services we offer to our clients.

How does it feel to be open again? Amazing! As you can imaging, our clients have been desperate to get back. We’ve already seen some interesting styles as clients have had to resort to family members cutting and colouring their hair, which is never a good thing. We’re delighted that Tyler is now back from maternity leave and will be working in the salon again in August.

We were closed for over 200 days in a year and when we could open, were expected to book hundreds of clients in in three days, which wasn’t easy, but we did it!

Thankfully our appointments diary is full again and we’re working all the hours to get our clients in to get their hair back to their pre-lockdown cuts and colour. The atmosphere has been amazing. We’ve received Christmas gifts, wine and chocolates. It’s been just like Christmas week. We’ve loved seeing all our clients again and, from their reaction, they’ve missed us too! 86

Suzanne Dickenson, owner of Trade Price Sofas, runs a couple of warehouses in south Wales selling a variety of high-quality sofas and interiors to suit every budget and every home. We chat to Suzanne to find out more.

SOFA, SO GOOD What do you offer your customers? Trade Price Sofas has two warehouses which supply sofas across the UK. We attract celebrity customers such as former footballer Rio Ferdinand, Katie Price, as well as Holly Hagan and Charlotte Crosby from the hit reality TV show Geordie Shore but, at Trade Price Sofas, every customer is made to feel special. What’s your background? I’ve been in the furnishing industry for nearly thirty years. We sell sofas and furnishings to discerning customers across the UK. I also sell matching curtains, pelmets, beds, pillows, and dining chairs. I can even build a TV into the back of your sofa or bed if the client wishes. Anything is possible. All I need is a gem of an idea, and my imagination gets to work.

What do you think makes Trade Price Sofas so special? Literally anything you see in a glossy magazine can be recreated by our amazing designers and upholsterers at realistic prices. We work with the best fabric suppliers so, whether it’s a traditional leather Chesterfield or something more contemporary or flamboyant, we can help. Myself and my staff are not pushy, we encourage our customers to take the time to get exactly what they want.

We offer bespoke sofas which are all made-to-measure. Customers can ask for a sofa that’s 5’ or 25’ long and we can make it. There’s also a fast turnaround, with sofas being made and delivered within 7 to 14 days. 88

Are you affordable? We like to think that we are. As we have large industrial units, no high street shop and buy in large numbers, we can offer our products at extremely competitive prices.

Do you offer finance agreements? Yes we do, please ring for more details. Where are you based? Can customers visit you? Yes, we have warehouses in Llantrisant and Merthyr Tydfil. However, we can deliver throughout the UK. Are you on Instagram? Sian Owen is probably more well known for her wedding photography. but she has many more strings to her bow. Here she tells us about those other skills.

SIAN OWEN PHOTOGRAPHY You’re known for your fabulous wedding photography but what other services do you offer? Ah thank you. Yes, as well as weddings I also offer business branding, family portraits and event photography. I love the fact that I cover such a variety of work. It keeps it really diverse and exciting working with all sorts of people with different requirements.

How could businesses best use your images? It is important for businesses to have strong, engaging photography that makes their brand stand out and put the right message across to new and current customers/clients. Most consumers will search for products and services online mainly using social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and websites.

What type of clients would benefit from your photography? Anyone who runs a business be it small or large can benefit from having a unique set of strong images that makes them stand out visually.

I work with my clients to get to know them and understand their business brand values and direction. Following an initial meeting, I put together a photography plan with ideas for locations/colours and styling for detailed shoot.

Anyone who is holding an event (this could be a family party or big corporate event) and of course anyone who is recently engaged and planning their special day!

The shoots are customised to reflect each persona and business requirements. The outcome is a unique set of images that can be used for social media, marketing, and advertising. 90

How far do you travel for your work? What geographical areas do you cover? I travel all over the UK and abroad for work. I am fortunate to photograph weddings in Europe most summers. Italy is quite a popular destination for British couples to get married, it’s amazing to have the opportunity to photograph in such beautiful places. You’ve made Barry your home, what do you love about the Vale? Do you have any favourite places? Yes, we moved to Barry almost three years ago. I feel so fortunate to be living in such a wonderful area of South Wales. We are so lucky to be so close to the coast and yet so close to Cardiff, it’s a perfect location for us. I love the shops on High Street Barry, and the new Goodsheds by the Waterfront have so many wonderful businesses and places to eat. As a family, we love Porthkerry Park (so lovely for walking the dog), The Knap and Southerndown Beach. My children’s favourite park is The Clifftops park in Penarth, it’s quite sweet as I always really enjoyed playing in that park as a child too.

Now that lockdown is coming to a close and, hopefully, we’ll see more wedding and outdoor events happening, are you seeing an increase in bookings? It’s growing positively and steadily over the last few months and I’m so happy to be back behind the lens again. It feels great. TESTIMONIALS

What clients say… Where do I start?! I would recommend her in the blink of an eye to anyone who needs a photographer for their event, she has captured our special day perfectly. Thank you! Olivia Davies Sian has recently taken some photographs for me as part of a photoshoot. She has been amazing, and the images are outstanding. I can’t wait to work with you again. Thanks Sian. Nicola, NGJ make-up and hair. Sian is a fantastic photographer and exactly the kind of person you want around on your wedding day. Alexandra Shaw 91

They say a change is as good as a rest and after months and months of lockdown even more so. So we decided to take ourselves away for a few days. Our walks around the Vale have kept us sane but as much as we’ve enjoyed it, we’ve yearned to explore - to get lost shall we say.

WEST LIFE

We didn’t want to venture too far (abroad is certainly off the list at this point), so we thought West Wales could be an option. We were a little concerned that most places would be booked up but perhaps a midweek excursion would offer more choice and we were right.

WEDNESDAY... We left at 9am, intending to check in around 3pm. There’s plenty to see so we headed for the market town of Narberth. The equivalent town in the Vale of Glamorgan would be Cowbridge (sadly it lost its market quite recently – a sign of the times).

Now we’ve never tried AirBnB. No particular reason - just creatures of habit. Again, we thought let’s roll the search dice and see what the app presents. It wasn’t long before we found Llwyn Yr Ynn, near Talley, owned by Robert and Kate, nestled in the countryside just outside Llandeilo.

Our mood was slightly dampened by the drizzle on arrival, but we had a good look around and ended up having lunch in The Ivy Bush Inn. The staff were extremely friendly, and we were confidently informed that this was the best pub in Narberth and, if we wished to eat, we wouldn’t be disappointed. We weren’t. The Ivy Bush Inn’s kitchen produced a very competent lamb shank, mash, vegetables, and gravy - really good gravy actually.

Llandeilo had been a popular destination when we were courting (dating, if you’re American reading this), back around twentyfive (ish) years ago it had a particularly impressive high street and Jennifer loved a little boutique there called Cherubs. Cherubs has long gone and the town has ridden the commerce rollercoaster ever since. Thankfully it seems to be on the rise again with some good independent shops, eateries and a hotel at its centre. We booked a Wednesday and Thursday night at Llwyn Yr Ynn and were excited at the prospect. The weather had been good and the forecast looked promising. Booking is easy I have to say, and the app works very well, even for novices like us.

After lunch we headed for Tenby and after a brief wander around headed back to check in at Llwyn Yr Ynn. If we had any concerns about finding our destination, they evaporated quickly. Robert’s directions were excellent, and we arrived as planned.

Robert hadn’t arrived home, but Kate was there to greet us and give us a brief scoot around, just so we knew where everything was. We had booked two luxury king-sized bedrooms and they met our expectations. Tastefully decorated and, most importantly, spotless. There is a beautiful fully equipped shared kitchen, dining area, lounge with premium recliners and a wood burning stove. The lounge was spacious and featured a 60” OLED tv with Netflix, Amazon Prime complemented by site-wide WiFi - a home from home. At this point, we were in explore mode so headed back out with the promise that we’d meet Robert later and he could give us the grand tour. With the weather improving rapidly, we headed for Llandovery and a little mooch around the antique shops before heading to Llandeilo for a walk around. The main retail areas were closed at this point, so we headed back to base. By this time Robert was home and we were keen for him to show us around.

This really is a rural idyll. The traffic is noticeable by its absence. This cool, home-from-home sits in expansive secure grounds which include an orchard, a wildflower meadow and a picnic area with firepit. To say we were impressed would be an understatement. If you were on the run, this is the place to hide. Kate also runs several craft businesses from the site and has her own studio where she works and teaches. Robert is running guided tours in the area for motorcyclists so the plentiful, secure parking and storage for sports and leisure equipment is perfect to accommodate visitors’ vehicles and their kit. The location is handy for the Brecon Beacons, Brechfa and the coast. This is, as this lovely couple are keen to stress (and this is the only stress you’ll experience here), a proper rural getaway. You won’t be bothered with neighbours or the usual hustle and bustle of city living. There are some excellent pubs and restaurants a short drive away, but there are no forms of local transport so your car, bike or feet are your only options to get around. We definitely liked that. Guided tour over, we still had itchy feet and hungry tums so decided to head for Carmarthen for a curry. Cinnamon Indian Cuisine on Mansel Street came highly recommended and around twenty minutes later we were sat enjoying a very good curry. If The Raj at home in Rhoose is a 10/10, Cinnamon was a solid 8.5. We can certainly endorse it and the service, along with the food, was excellent. As we tootled back to Llwyn Yr Ynn, the only thought on our minds was could we get a good night’s sleep.

THURSDAY...

The answer was yes. The beds are very comfortable and after a sound sleep, the following morning we awoke to a beautiful dawn and enjoyed a cup of tea strolling around the beautiful, wild, buttercup meadow in the company of Kate and Robert’s cheeky Schnauzers Rhubarb (Ruby) and Dill. They are particularly affectionate, and we loved their playful and inquisitive nature great company. We were keen to make the most of a beautiful day so headed to New Quay, Cardigan, for breakfast. We have visited New Quay many times over the years. My most memorable time there was two weeks as a child in the heat-wave summer of 1976. And on this glorious June Thursday, with the sun beating down, the memories came flooding back.

After a quick glance at the map we took ourselves off to Cenarth to view the falls and we were not disappointed in the least. The Teifi was flowing, and we enjoyed a lovely circular walk along the river and up and around the hill overlooking the valley. Our effort was rewarded back in Cenarth with good coffee and an unbelievably moist piece of locally made Bara Brith* which was, honestly, one of the best I have ever tasted.

Thankfully, unlike many popular coastal towns across Wales and the South West of England, New Quay hasn’t yet been yuppified and, in my humble opinion, ruined by the second-home crowd of London and the South East. New Quay still looks remarkably similar to the New Quay I fell in love with as a fourteen-year-old boy. A tasty Welsh breakfast set us up for a lovely walk across the harbour wall and then a stroll up the hill and through the town. A little moan at this point. The machines in the car park are appallingly bad – difficult to fathom - everyone was complaining. The local council clearly had decided that simplicity shouldn’t be the order of the day. I ended up being fleeced for 24 hours parking when I was trying to purchase two. The car park toilets were not up to par either. Not impressed. If you need the loo, use one of the local businesses.

Our leisurely drive back to Llwyn Yr Ynn was unbelievably relaxing. We managed to get onto a road marked ’unknown’ by Google and were treated to some of the most magnificent views of the region. We thought the Vale was beautiful, but this was like the Vale on steroids. An endless vista of trees, fields and lush greenery that seemed to stretch to the horizon. Robert and Kate had talked about what had attracted them to the area several years earlier and we could understand the magnetism this region had, not only for them but everyone who visits. Yes, we were seeing it at its very best (everywhere looks better when the sun is shining) but this was special, magical even. Dusk fell and as we watched the sun set, we couldn’t help but feel good about our little excursion into paradise. We love to travel, to explore - it keeps us alive. It certainly recharges the batteries and ours were full to bursting, but ready for another great night’s sleep in those super comfy king-size beds.

After a further stroll around Cenarth, we headed back to the coast. This time we had Aberporth in our sights and the opportunity for a coastal walk to Tresaith. Aberporth is lovely and, quite frankly, these gorgeous Welsh coastal hamlets come alive in the sun. Tresaith is further up the coast and has a small beach and a few cafés and eateries. We stopped at The Ship Inn for a drink but were so impressed by the burgers coming out we had to try one so sat, in the sun, overlooking the beach, staring at the beautiful blue sea, both of us thinking it was like we were back in Spain enjoying lunch on the Med. It was absolutely breath-taking. We walked the couple of miles back to Aberporth and, as the day was still young, thought we’d pop up to Llangrannog, Llandysul. Parking just above the town (free car park - take note New Quay), we walked down to the beautiful beach and again sat enjoying a coffee before taking a stroll on the beach and up around the headland. By this time, we were selling everything and moving to West Wales, it was that intoxicating. 94

“Aberporth is lovely and, quite frankly, these gorgeous Welsh coastal hamlets come alive in the sun.”

FRIDAY...

Time to leave. Time to part company with the cheeky Shnauzers and say goodbye to this really special place. We had said our goodbyes to Robert the evening before. He was up and away early - his job still tears him away from his ultimate dream of semi-retirement heaven. Kate was on hand to wish us well and leaving was just that little harder because we’d felt we’d met some souls we liked kindred spirits if you will.

for breakfast. Yes, another blast from the past, Pendine Sands. Again, a family holiday destination from long before the 1976 trip to New Quay. My dad had driven us down on to the beach early one morning and I had taken the wheel of our Ford Cortina - and in that moment, as an eight year old boy, I was John Parry-Thomas and that old Cortina was the beautiful, gleaming and streamlined Babs, out to beat Sir Malcolm Campbell in his Bluebird

the joy Jennifer and I experienced on this little road trip was just enough to recharge the batteries and get us ready for another few laps of the rat race. Sometimes, a short break can make all the difference in life. West Wales is full of wonder, and you don’t always have to book a hotel. Jump online, look up Llwyn Yr Ynn and book a few days away. Who knows something quite magical might happen? Ladies and gentleman start your engines…

Llwyn Yr Ynn Talley, Llandeilo, SA19 7DD 07866 442324 (Robert) Llwyn Yr Ynn

We waved goodbye, vowing to return at some point and headed for Pendine

We never quite broke the land speed record that day but we had fun, and

A few lucky people have been working on an allotment for years. I say lucky because getting an allotment these days can sometimes come with a hefty price tag and an exceptionally long waiting list. The benefits are worth the wait.

ALLOTMENT LIFE Therese, Porthcawl

Firstly, what is an allotment? A patch of land, generally owned by the local council or private landowner, that’s split up into ‘plots’. On each plot locals grow their own fruit, flowers or vegetables. There is a long tradition of allotments in Britain and they were the backbone of food production in the war years when rations were in place.

It’s good for the environment If you’re working an allotment, you’re probably doing more than your fair share for the environment; creating essential habitats for bees and other wildlife. In urban areas this is especially important. Rob, Dinas Powys

The health benefits… Being out in the open air - working with the land and exercising is certainly good for your mental and physical health, according to the National Allotment Society. You’ll be burning calories and growing the best food you can eat. It’s win, win!

Grow expensive fruit and veg yourself… Forget scouring the supermarket for pricey veg, why not grow your own? Just a few popular, but hard to get, are Cavolo Nero (black kale), Pink Fir apple potatoes, Chinese artichokes and unusual squashes - the list is endless, and owners will always swap plants and seeds.

It’s very sociable… Feeling lonely? Forget it, you’ll never be lonely on an allotment. And if your idea of owners is grumbling old men, think again, owners these days are young and old and as diverse as you can imagine in their gender, backgrounds and interests. You’ll find a real community spirit on an allotment and you’ll make lasting friendships (occasionally a little green eye creeps in but generally owners are supportive and helpful).

It’s incredibly rewarding… The satisfaction of eating what you’ve grown is priceless. And it tastes divine. You can be creative… Your allotment can be beautiful as well as plentiful. You can plant flowers alongside veg (which helps keep the pests down and aids pollination). Some owners keep chickens - some paint their sheds cool colours. Your plot can be as individual as you are.

Keith, Laure (allotment holders) and friends Juliette and David, Dinas Powys

It’s educational… If you’re grown up, learning about fruit and veg and how to grow them is a great skill to have but it’s even more benefit to children who have become detached from food production over decades. Children need to understand where food comes from and appreciate how hard it can be to produce sometimes allotments are very good places to learn about failure and how to deal with it.

You’ll save money… Forget gym memberships and Peloton subscriptions, get digging and watch the pounds fall off. And you’ll be eating the best food possible - organic is what your body needs, and it tastes amazing.

How to apply for an allotment Contact your local council to apply to an allotment near you. They will either allocate you a plot or, in many cases, add your name to a waiting list. Can’t get an allotment? Panic not, you can grow vegetables in a window box or tub. You’ll be amazed at what you can produce in your own small space. And you can always visit an allotment for tips and ideas. In my experience, allotment owners are some of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

Steve, Dinas Powys

Play the long game… If there’s a two year wait, put your name down. It’ll come around soon enough. Patience is another thing you’ll learn growing fruit and veg. 97

“I was on the waiting list

for three years for my allotment and finally took possession of it last January. I took it up to keep fit and to supply my family with fresh veg, which we eat a lot of!” Therese, Porthcawl Bottom line. Don’t delay… Search on Facebook for an allotment near you or just pop in when you’re passing one. You never know, your luck may be in.

Back in winter 2019 Russell Scott-Lawson was celebrating Hawkes’ 25th Anniversary and one of his best years ever at the beautifully attired Morgan Arcade shop. Then Covid-19 arrived…

HAWKES BEHIND THE MASK

Hawkes Bespoke Outfitters opened in Cardiff in 1994 and quickly made its mark on the capital supplying mainly quality leather jackets and suits. Russell purchased the shop from the previous owner in 2000. Ever since, Russell has worked tirelessly to build an enviable reputation for great customer service and boasts the great and the good of Wales’s elite sports people and business professionals as his customers.

“I’m really lucky,” says Russell. “I’ve built a brilliant and loyal clientele who, fortunately, have been back in shopping as soon as restrictions were lifted, and I’m extremely grateful. You can have the best shop in the world but if no-one buys, we’re out of a job.” Hawkes, as it is known now, offers a superb selection of high-quality brands and labels and, in recent years, Russell has added bespoke ’made-to-measure’ and wedding hire to complete the Hawkes offering.

“Things were going so well!” he says with a wry smile. The irony isn’t lost on us. For so many, especially in retail and hospitality, the events over the last eighteen months have been challenging to say the least.

Along with fitted suits, Russell also offers a personally selected collection of gentlemen’s shoes to complement the clothing along with other accessories belts, ties etc.

Russell says, “It’s good to see weddings happening again. Above all we pride ourselves on the service we deliver, and we believe that Hawkes is unparalleled in this respect. You will always find a smile and helpful, sincere advice. We consider our customers our shareholders, and, above all other considerations, we want to ensure they are happy.”

99

Russell has huge knowledge gained from decades of experience with regards to all aspects of bespoke suits and tailoring which, he believes, is unrivalled in Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan. “Don’t get me wrong,” he says, “this pandemic has really pushed all of us to the limit. It’s been devastating to many, and the financial pressures have meant I’ve had to dig deep into the resources we’ve built up since 2000. Had this business not had the reputation it has, or been established for so long, I’m not sure it could have survived.”

The shop did have a makeover during lockdown. “There was an upside,” he adds. “We used the time wisely, gave the shop a mini-makeover. Redid all the floors. It looks better for it - closing the shop any other time would have been impossible, and it kept me busy.” I ask Russell how he has managed to stay positive over the past year, many haven’t. “I work out a lot, that’s really helped. Healthy body, healthy mind,” he says. I also know that he has, like so many, either taken up hobbies 100

during lockdown or returned to ones that have, perhaps, been put aside while following their careers.

For Russell it was calligraphy and drawing.

One day I saw the beginnings of a beautiful drawing of a trout underwater pop up on his Facebook page (Russell is a keen angler). The drawing was completed over the next few weeks and several more appeared; he’s clearly creative, and obviously talented. Russell doing what he does relies on creativity, understanding colour, contrast, form and function. It all makes sense. He is a professional tailor and a total perfectionist, and I doubt he’ll ever change. Everything he does has to be to the highest possible standard. What the lockdown has taught all of

us is life is too short and, if you’re not doing something you’re passionate about, perhaps it’s time for a rethink. Russell’s content. He found his vocation a long time ago and loves what he does. Hawkes is a must visit… Hawkes has an excellent reputation in Cardiff for gentlemen’s tailoring, and if you haven’t yet visited this beautiful shop in the equally beautiful Morgan Arcade, perhaps now is the time. The style clock never stops ticking. 101

Arthur, the office Labrador at Vale Solicitors, is delighted to see Vale Life magazine back in print. He can once again keep his paws on the pulse of life in the Vale.

LAB REPORT

Vale Solicitors have been as busy as ever during the past year. Client contact has been mainly by Zoom and phone, or home and garden visits. Arthur has missed his clients and is glad to welcome them back into the office once again. Clients at Vale Solicitors all get personal attention and there is always time to talk, to explain and to understand. Arthur is a good listener and loves to hear about clients’ lives. Recently, a retired miner told us about the summer holidays for pit ponies. They were brought up from the mines for just two weeks and set loose in fields with the sun on their backs they never wanted to be caught and taken back to work. Arthur has a lot of pony friends and is glad they don’t have to work in the mines anymore. For happier memories, Arthur was also pleased to meet Wyn Calvin, Wales’ Prince of Laughter, soon to celebrate his 96th Birthday. Wyn has a treasury of stories - from the 1960s driving around sunny Barry Island in an open top car full of Show Girls to meeting Bob Hope when he came to Barry to visit his mother’s birthplace.

Arthur’s advice to everyone is to take time to listen and remember stories from your family and friends. History is best learned from those who witnessed it. Away from the office there are so many simple activities that we can now enjoy again; sitting and watching the world go by outside the pub, clambering over the rocks to the sea, exploring all that Vale has to offer. Sadly, we will still miss the great events like the Vale Show, but we look forward to seeing our community spaces gradually coming back to life. Arthur and his family are looking forward to the return of open air theatre. Everyman Theatre will be touring to Tredegar House and Insole Court, and Red Herring Theatre to Carew Castle. Hopefully, Red Herring will return to Penarth Pier Pavilion later in the year with their production of Clue On Stage (postponed by the first lockdown), featuring Vale Solicitors’ Michael Morgan as Colonel Mustard. Arthur is looking forward to new developments in Vale Solicitors during the rest of the year. New staff will be joining the firm including his nephew Paddington. Arthur will be promoted to Uncle Arthur and thinks that will be rather lovely. 106

The kitchen table or desk crammed in next to the bed in the spare room were fine when working in pyjamas was a novelty, but now we need solutions for the long haul, in terms of boosting both productivity and the way we feel about our homes. Oakley Garden Rooms may be the solution.

They can be built quickly, cheaply and construction is far less disruptive than an extension to your property. This is where the founders of Oakley Garden rooms saw a part of the market that was a perfect extension (pardon the pun) of their family construction company which has been trading since 1954.

Each garden room is fabricated in south Wales at their headquarters. They use highly skilled tradesman and state-ofthe-art machinery and equipment in a controlled environment. Once the main shell is ready, the garden room is delivered and finished on site with cladding, windows, doors and internal finishes.

Summer 2020 was fortunately a balmy affair, and we took to our gardens and extending our living spaces. With record breaking sales of hot tubs and bbqs, garden furniture was an essential, and we used what we could to stay in to ’stay safe’.

Reassuringly, their construction expertise spans over three generations and they have been involved in delivering high quality projects in construction and refurbishment for many happy clients over the decades.

As well as the options for the external finishes of the build itself, they provide multiple options internally for aspects such as electrical requirements and connectivity to fitted joinery cabinets, tables, desks to your specification.

Thus, the commute to the garden has become a reality. As we claim back our homes and search for the sanctuary we want to create; the garden room has come into its own.

Their buildings are designed to fall within permitted development, this means you don’t need to obtain planning permission, however as the rooms are bespoke, they can also accommodate larger designs and builds if that’s requested, subject to obtaining local planning permission. The garden rooms are built with the highest quality and durability in mind. The materials used for their construction are of high specification and performance and are derived directly from the timber frame construction industry.

With an ever-increasing demand for additional living and working space at home, the opportunity to design and build a quality and cost-effective solution in the shape of a bespoke garden room is, for many, the way to go – a versatile and stylish space that provide comfort and function right at home in your garden.
