At present, if you live in Wales or the South West and have a child that acquires a brain injury by: ■ Being run over in a car crash ■ Falling off their bike or ■ Playground equipment brain haemorrhage ■ Suffocation ■ Heart of blood disorder ■ Stroke ■ Violence by others to name a few, then they will not get the care and rehabilitation that they deserve.
Kyle’s Goal - paediatric rehabilitation in Wales Kyle Beere was a typically fit, healthy, intelligent and active twelve year old boy. On 14th November 2009 he asked to be taken to the accident and emergency unit at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, due to a severe headache and quickly slipped into unconsciousness. What was unknown at the time was that he was suffering a massive brain haemorrhage caused by a rare condition called Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM). Over the following few weeks Kyle remained on life support in a coma and had undergone two major and two minor brain surgeries to remove the AVM and associated blood clots, along with a tracheostomy to stop him from suffocating. Just as it was suggested by the specialists that the time had come to switch off the machines keeping Kyle alive, he defied all the odds and his eyes started reacting to the tests being undertaken.
After this miracle, Kyle continued to progress every day but still could not talk or move his head and limbs. Everything that we take for granted like walking, talking, eating etc. has been taken away from Kyle by this cruel twist of fate. Kyle’s family then thought that his rehabilitation would take place at either the UHW (which is the specialist neuro centre for Wales) or at the long established rehabilitation centre at nearby Rookwood Hospital. To their astonishment they were told that the new Children’s hospital at UHW has not included nuerorehab in their facility and Rookwood hospital only accepts patients of 16 years or older. Furthermore, they were told that the NHS does not cater for the rehab of brain-injured children anywhere within Wales and the South West. Kyle’s family were told that the nearest suitable facility was at the Childrens Trust in Tadworth, Surrey (www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk), but this specialist facility is limited to 49 spaces. It is also 160 miles (three hours) away from Kyle’s friends and family.
This has to change. Until the Welsh Assembly Government set up a paediatric rehabilitation service in Wales, the cost implications for families required (and lucky enough to get a place) are very high and frequently prohibitive. It is for this reason that Kyle and others like him need your help. H O W YO U C A N H E L P

The Village Kitchen & Bar enhances the mood On its website, The Village Kitchen & Bar describes itself as a restaurant and bar serving excellent food and drink at reasonable prices. They go on to state, “At VKB our aim is simple. Get together with friends and family to enjoy great food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere with a friendly buzz.” And, after spending an evening there I’d have to say The Village, as the now overquoted advertising slogan goes, does exactly what it says on the tin. The decor is tasteful and refreshingly understated. Stylish deep grey and restful cream paintwork complements the warm wood of the floor, tables and chairs. The soft furnishings are a mixture of patterns and stripes in very pleasant and appropriately autumnal colours. The lighting varies over the two floors. The ground floor is a little brighter so if romance is in the air, head upstairs. The staff are very good too - polite, friendly and engaging. All of which contributes to the promised ‘relaxed atmosphere’.
After making our choices from the stylish wood veneer menus, we chose a crisp New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to accompany our meal and, I have to say, I was very impressed with it. I wouldn’t claim to be a wine expert so I found the wine wheel on the back of the menu very useful. It helps you narrow your choice depending on what you’re eating. Our starters arrived. My wife’s ‘Warm Peppered Goats Cheese Salad with a refreshing Mango salsa’ was rich, but not overpowering, and the sweet and savoury flavours played a little taste game on the tongue that was most enjoyable. My ‘Homemade Cod & Salmon Fishcakes with Sweet Chilli Sauce’ was good but a little light on fish for my liking. That said, the chilli dipping sauce packed a pleasant, perfectly weighted punch so this certainly wasn’t a deal-breaker. Waiting for our mains, we soaked up ‘the relaxed atmosphere and friendly buzz’. The Village really does have a nice buzz about it. There wasn’t an empty table at 8.30pm on Saturday evening so they must be doing something right - there are so many restaurants that aren’t enjoying a full house in these trying times.
As if to reinforce our good thoughts about The Village, our mains arrived with perfect timing. My wife’s ‘Pan Fried Lemon Sole’ was perfectly cooked, its French lemon butter sauce bringing a creamy counterpoint to the superbly cooked white fish. My ‘specials board’ roast chicken was truly excellent - moist and packed with flavour and, as we polished them off, our conversation paused. We took a rain check on the excellent presentation of desserts - there was simply no room. Instead we ordered a couple of delicious Irish coffees and continued our conversation. Earlier, I mentioned the statement on the website because so many eateries a) fail to deliver on their promises and b) most haven’t the faintest idea what they are or what their offering is. Not so at The Village. It’s refreshing to dine at an establishment that knows what it is, knows what its offering, promises an experience and delivers. If you visit The Village Kitchen & Bar with someone you’re in love with, chances are, you’ll leave even more in love. It really is that kind of place. Ty Mawr - big pub with a warm heart On its website Ty Mawr describes itself as ‘an informal rural pub, perfect for customers to meet, eat, drink and chat in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.’ Talk about under-selling yourself! The experience is more, much more. I first came upon the pub after a recommendation while having a lunchtime sandwich and coffee at Thornhill Farm Shop (also well worth a visit) and as Ty Mawr is a short drive away I decided to take a look. It was a gorgeous blue-sky day in October and the views of Cardiff and the Severn Estuary beyond, across the well-tended grounds, were simply stunning. The gardens also include a fabulous pond and a wonderful kitchen garden allotment which provides the freshest fruits and vegetables possible for Ty Mawr’s kitchen. So, after a good look around and being suitably impressed, I decided to treat my wife and son to a meal in the evening. Inside, Ty Mawr is gorgeous. A recent refurbishment by Brains has created the perfect pub feel and with several log fires on the go, the welcoming and warming mood they create is exactly what you want from a country pub in autumn and winter. Ty Mawr’s staff are friendly, polite and unobtrusive - there’s nothing I hate more than being fussed over but at Ty Mawr they strike that happy balance. The interior is extremely spacious but, because of the clever design, manages to create lots of separate areas and cwtches which create an intimate atmosphere.
“Ty Mawr has the perfect pub feel with several log fires on the go.”
I’m not going to provide a morsel by morsel account of our meal - it would be completely inappropriate. This isn’t fine dining but good, honest pub food and it’s done very well. Notable stars of the show were the starter platter which was wonderful to look at and equally enjoyable to eat. Both our mains were very good indeed but the real surprise of the evening were our desserts, especially my crumble. I don’t usually choose fruit crumble and custard, but this was out of this world and I would definitely order it again. I think it’s also important to mention that our portions were very healthy - none of your meagre mouthfuls here. I liked Ty Mawr very much: for its food (which is excellent and sensibly priced), for its interior which is almost country pub perfect, for its location (which is simply stunning), and for its kitchen garden home-grown ethos. If I had to mark it down, it would be because it doesn’t have accommodation (yet!) and I would have dearly loved to have woken up to those stunning views over Cardiff and a great Ty Mawr Welsh breakfast. I’m sensing a planning application in the pipeline. ❧ 11 ❧

Hilton Cardiff is a real hit as the sky lights up We don’t usually make a big fuss of bonfire night in the Hobbs-Roberts household. I’m not keen on the cold and my son and I don’t suffer loud noises well. This year we decided to make an exception and go the whole hog - book a hotel for the night and take in a bonfire event (even if it was indoors!) In Cardiff we’re lucky enough to be blessed with ‘Sparks in the Park’, the biggest fireworks display in the whole of Wales! Organised by the Cardiff Round Table, this extravaganza has the added spectacle of Cardiff Castle as a backdrop. It takes place in Coopers Field in Bute Park, behind the castle. After a little investigation, I found that Hilton Cardiff is situated opposite Bute Park and a call to the hotel confirmed that if we booked one of the executive suites, we could watch the display from the executive lounge on the same floor. Result! To make our stay a little bit more special, I booked a special treat of afternoon tea, a tradition that’s become very popular of late. On arrival we booked in and our car was whisked away and valet parked. We were very impressed with our executive suite and the complimentary chocolates and bottle of wine were a much welcome bonus. Our twelve year-old was delighted to have his own ‘quarters’ with fold down sofa bed and his own ‘massive’ TV (apostrophes denote son’s wording). I’m happy to admit to being a cleanliness freak and was delighted that the bathroom was spotless, with a pleasant aroma of cleaning products.
We made our way to the bar for a leisurely Welsh afternoon tea which consisted of a selection of finger sandwiches, warm fruit scones with vanilla cream and strawberry jam, Welsh cakes, Bara brith, chocolate éclair, raspberry tart, Merlyn layer cake, lemon tart and a selection of various teas. Delicious! A couple of hours later we headed to the executive lounge to take our seats, stock up on drinks and snacks in readiness for the firework display and, I must say, the Cardiff Round Table surpassed themselves. We all had a good night’s sleep. There was some noise from the streets below but then that’s to be expected from a city hotel and certainly not enough to keep us from sleeping well, probably further aided by a super comfy bed. On the Sunday morning we enjoyed breakfast in the conservatory restaurant on the ground floor which overlooks the castle. There was plenty of choice and the cooked items were piping hot.
“We were very impressed with our executive suite and the complimentary chocolates were a much welcome bonus.” The conservatory was excellent for early morning people watching. What struck us most about Hilton Cardiff was the staff. I personally don’t think this country is blessed with quality staff in the tourism industry (I expect I’ll get lots of emails admonishing me for this statement) but when you experience exceptionally good service, as we did here, it’s something to be flagged up. All in all, I’m glad we made the effort this bonfire night. If we plan another event in Cardiff, then at least I know I can count on this hotel as money very well spent.

COWBRIDGE
Arboreal offers something different Cowbridge already has a good reputation for its eateries so does it really need another? Honestly? No. I wouldn’t say you’re spoilt for choice in Cowbridge but it has more than its fair share and, like most towns in the Vale, they range from sort of okay to excellent. So when it was announced that a new restaurant, Arboreal, was opening in place of the old Gallery (coffee shop) I can’t say I was reaching for the trumpet with any real enthusiasm. Even if a restaurant opens with a fanfare these days, sooner or later they manage to fail at one or more of the key ingredients for success, and it’s usually lack of consistency that lets them down. So, as I’m walking towards Arboreal, I’m thinking please, please, please be different - please bring something new to the table. The food is excellent - good sized portions packed with flavour and sensibly priced. I don’t really want to say any more than that because I think the images will do more to encourage you to eat there more than anything I can say here. If I had to find fault, it would be that my lemon tart wasn’t positioned centrally on the plate and the gap between that and the cream was a touch too wide (those expert food critics among you will recognise this for the massive faux pas it is) but, hey ho, perfection is almost unattainable these days.
I’m jesting of course, I truly loved the food. It’s rustic and perfectly matched to its surroundings - clearly the interior designer and the head chef met long before the opening night and, if it were a theatrical production, everyone can take a bow and enjoy the applause. I’d certainly call for an encore. The truth is Arboreal surprised me. I wasn’t expecting it and was genuinely caught off guard by its charm, its quality and its quiet confidence. Is Arboreal a great restaurant? Yes. Is Cowbridge the better for it? Absolutely.
We stepped inside Arboreal and the first thing that met us was a genuinely warm welcome. The next thing that struck me was what a great job they’ve done with the interior. It’s eclectic and effortlessly stylish. The colour scheme is so very now and the organic textures of stone, wood, wallpaper and painted surfaces work extremely well together. It’s my kind of place and, even before I’ve raised a fork, I’m already feeling very comfortable in my surroundings. We were seated to the rear of the restaurant which offers access to a terraced garden. The room has an intimate view of the open-plan kitchen. This is an excellent concept and demonstrates the confidence the restaurant’s brigade have in their abilities. At the heart of the kitchen sits a beautiful white conical wood burning oven which provides an added sense of theatre to the room. The service isn’t too slick or stuffy - you’re made to feel relaxed and I liked that. In fact, I would defy anyone to enjoy a meal at Arboreal and not feel relaxed!

There’s no better feeling for a woman than a great shopping trip. By great, I mean an armful or two of shopping bags. I know I’m not on my own, as a recent study claims that many women will spend more than eight years of their lives shopping.
B HAPPY Investing in designer brands is all well and good if you have the bank balance of Coleen Rooney, but we all need that injection of happy, and you can make your money go further if you spend more wisely.
That was boutique owner Jodie Tanner’s thinking when she opened The Queen B boutique last year. “There’s no-one who loves their clothes and accessories more than me - that’s probably why I went into this business! But there’s nothing worse than spending a small fortune on the latest fashion items when they won’t be in next year. Our philosophy in The Queen B is that you can buy good quality clothing and accessories at affordable prices and look amazing,” says Jodie. “We’ve done our research and found brands that aren’t available on the High Street so you’re less likely to find your friends and colleagues in the same outfit.” The Queen B is best known for stocking the Uttam Boutique and Yumi brands which are inspired by Eastern culture. The designs embrace the traditions and beauty of Nepal, India, and Japan, using techniques such as patchwork, tie-dye, applique, hand-stitched beading and embroidery, combined with printed knitwear, chiffons, and silks.
These brands are both ‘fast fashion’ labels, which mean they provide the most on-trend styles, colours, and fabrics. Other brands available are Uttam Boutique, Yumi, Indulgence, Closet, 101 Idees, Lulu Paris, Pink Berry Paris, Glamorous, Juju & Christine, Emporium, Happy Love, KDK and Neslay.

After their engagement most couples spend considerable time planning the perfect wedding. Not so for Jill James and Ewart Needham of Southerndown. They gave themselves ten weeks! Vale Life spoke to the happy couple about the preparations for their big day and the event itself.
PERFECT DAY How long did you plan the wedding? Ten weeks! I do love a challenge. I thought what better way to celebrate Ewarts 70th than by getting married, one big celebration all rolled into one. It was certainly a lesson on how to spend a fortune in a short space of time, but what fun! The Venue Well it always helps I suppose to have your own venue! I could not think of a better place to have a wedding than West Farm - the views and sunsets are stunning. I wanted to return to Wales and, as soon as I saw West Farm in 2003, I was hooked I just had to buy it. It has taken me seven years to totally renovate the property, a much bigger project than I anticipated, but well worth it. We are inundated with requests for weddings and we now have a wedding licence, but I wanted us to be the first.

Jill and Ewart’s wedding suppliers Why did you chose Clive Ranger? I just loved their selection of rings. I told them what I was looking for and when I went in a tray arrived with exactly what I had requested, but also a brand new selection of Canadian Diamonds which blew me away. Not only did I have a wedding ring but chose an engagement ring at the same time. The Dress I had a vision of doing the style of Scarlet O’Hara from Gone With The Wind in a rich burgundy and that is what I set out to find. A lot of places thought I was mad, a dress in seven weeks, never, you need six months! However I went into High Society just to look although they had no burgundy. The first dress I tried on was what I bought, but in fact I actually had two pieces as I bought the lace coat as well. High Society could not have been more helpful. They rang Alan Hannah, the designer, to see if they could make the dress in such a short time, which they agreed to, and Arwen got their lady Rhiannon to sort out the beautiful lace coat. I felt like a million dollars on the day and I cannot recommend everyone at High Society enough.
We’ve gathered together some of the very best wedding suppliers in South Wales in this supplement to help make your choice that much easier.
WIN!
The lead up to the day. We had over 200 guests on the day and as our function room wasn’t completed at that point, Alpine Marquees supplied the wonderful marquee. Happy all was in place, I sent the men off to the hotel the night before to enjoy themselves and Ewart could celebrate his birthday.
Tell us about the proposal. Which One? Ewart first proposed in January 1989 and he has been asking yearly ever since! So when he asked on St. David’s day this year he nearly fell of the chair when I said yes. I just knew it was now or never, the time was right.

After an incredibly romantic proposal, where else could Jenny Walton and Ian Huckstep get married but the equally romantic Fonmon Castle? Jenny tells us about their perfect wedding day.
FAIRYTALE WEDDING How did Ian propose and where? Ian and I went up to the Lake District in the Spring of 2009 and spent a few magical days tramping round lakes and up and down fells. On 1 March (St David’s Day just a coincidence!) we went for a big walk from Borrowdale Valley towards Great Gable and Scafell Pike. The mist was quite low on the fells and, when we reached the pointof-no-return ‘crossroads’ and stopped for lunch (in a small hail storm!), I suggested it would be mad to attempt any of the big peaks. What was the point? We wouldn’t be able to see anything when we got there anyway. Ian seemed pretty disappointed but I just put it down to his throw-caution-tothe-wind sense of adventure, because there was no way I was going to attempt a potentially lethal mountain with only three hours of daylight left!
So, we took a lower loop round, up to the snow line and, after a mini-snowball fight, stopped for rest before heading back down the valley. I was sitting there waxing lyrical about how some coffee and a little bit of chocolate can make all the difference, all the while thinking, “If you’re going to do it, this would be the perfect moment.”
Then Ian said, “Shall we head down then?” (“Drat,” I thought. “I’m just going to have a stroppy stomp all the way down the valley, and be mildly annoyed all evening, and I won’t be able to say it’s because you didn’t propose to me on the most perfect opportunity there has ever been!”)
Ian continued, “But before we do...” and then he got down on one knee, produced this tiny little leather box, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Once I’d managed to pull myself together I of course said a resounding “Yes!” Why did you choose Fonmon Castle? For a number of reasons. Annie, the wedding planner, was so welcoming (and was no end of help and support, all seemingly effortless!). The house and grounds are so beautiful. The Library, where the wedding ceremony and later the wedding breakfast, was held, has a lovely intimate atmosphere. But, most importantly, it felt like a home, rather than a corporate conveyor belt. We were allowed to put all our own touches to it – family antique tablecloths for the reception tables, croquet on the lawn etc.
Did you look at other venues? Yes, we did quite a lot of research online and then visited a shortlist. How was the day? It was wonderful. The weather was glorious. It was a perfect Spring day, as I’d hoped, and was sunny and warm enough to have the reception on the lawn - it only just started to rain as we got into the car at the end of the night. The food was fantastic, and the ceilidh was great fun with everyone joining in. At one point in the evening, I looked up and people were sitting all the way up the stairs watching the dancing in the hall - it was just like a grand house party, a real family wedding. Where did you honeymoon? A “Grand Tour” of Italy – from Venice to Florence to Amalfi to Rome, then Sardinia for a week and then a week at home.

Chantele, a journalist, and Jonathan, a bar manager, both 24 from Neath, are childhood sweethearts who married on 8th May 2010 after being together for five years. They had a black and white wedding with an art deco theme. To save money and add a personal touch, they decided to DIY as much of the wedding as they could. Here’s their story.
I DO (IT YOURSELF) The Proposal Having known each other through comprehensive school at Dwr-Y-Felin, Chantele and Jonathan finally started dating when they were 17 and studying at Neath Port Talbot College. “I think we knew we were meant to be together very early on in our relationship, so getting engaged after only ten months together wasn’t a big surprise,” says Chantele. Jon proposed whilst the pair were in Kentucky, USA, for a family wedding. “It happened in the National Park in Florence, Cincinnati, in the snow, in front of a giant stone turtle!” laughs Chantele. “It was a surprise when it happened, even though I knew Jon intended to propose whilst we were in America as we had both discussed it with my parents before we left.” The couple used Chantele’s grandmother’s engagement ring, as Chantele had inherited it and had always wanted it to be her own engagement ring one day.
“I had always wanted a black and white wedding with a vintage feel and the art deco era lent itself very well to that.”
The Planning “We both wanted to wait until we had finished university before planning our wedding,” says Jon. “If I’m honest, I didn’t really plan much of our wedding, Chantele and her mum Julie organised 99% of it themselves with my occasional nod of approval.” Chantele, like most women, knew what she wanted her wedding day to be like. “I’m a little different, so my wedding day had to be a little bit different too, and I was very specific with what I wanted. Once mum and I started planning, we realised we could make a lot of things ourselves, and that way I could get exactly what I wanted while adding my own personal touch.”
I had always wanted a black and white wedding with a vintage feel and the art deco era lent itself very well to that. Luckily mum and I are both quite creative so we were able to make all the stationery, table centres and the bridesmaids’ jewellery and hair pieces using materials bought on eBay. I also designed all the dresses with the help of Julie Mayers, and mum and I designed the wedding cake which was made by Janet Saith.” Jon says the hardest thing to choose was the photographer. “We must have looked through 200 websites of local photographers before we finally made the decision to book Mark Button, and we are so glad that we did because the photos turned out really well. Just what we wanted.”
The Wedding They both say the day went perfectly. “Not one hitch really,” said Chantele. “I was told I was the calmest bride the photographer or vicar had ever seen. But I am generally a very laid-back person. Jon was a little nervous during the ceremony and before his speech but that was more to do with having to talk in front of everyone.”
Mid-day entertainment was provided by singer songwriter Rob Cross, while the evening guests were entertained by The Mojo’s soul and blues band. “We decided upon Tom Jones’ ‘We Got Love’ as our first dance,” explains Chantele. “The song didn’t have any significant meaning itself but I love his music and Jon likes a bit of Tom too, and we finally picked this song as the lyrics were perfect. It was a totally perfect day. Everyone we loved was there and it was exactly how I dreamed it would be.” The Honeymoon “We don’t really like the heat too much, or beaches, or clubbing, so that cancelled out a lot of places, and we really wanted to go somewhere different,” says Jon. “We wanted to experience a totally new culture and go somewhere you aren’t likely to go on a normal holiday so I suggested China,” says Chantele. “Luckily Jon agreed and we started looking for the best deal.” They eventually booked a tour with Wendy Wu Tours, www.wendywutours.co.uk and spent a month travelling central and northern China. “We waited until November to go away, as the weather would be cooler and it was out of peak season so we would avoid any crowds and queues,” says Jon. “Although we were on a group tour, we still got to spend plenty of time alone, and we had the most amazing trip. It has given us a bit of the travel bug and we already have a list of places in mind.”

So, we took a lower loop round, up to the snow line and, after a mini snowball fight, stopped for rest before heading back down the valley.
The Library, where the wedding ceremony, and later the wedding breakfast, was held, has a lovely intimate atmosphere.

When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.
THE LIGHT
FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories. Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.
What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.
“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”
Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance. What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift. When only bespoke quality will do, Rathkey’s craftsmanship and service may be the right choice for you.
ONLY BESPOKE City Life spoke to owner Paul Rathkey to find out why customers choose him and what it is that makes Rathkey’s service so special.
Paul, what’s your role in Rathkey’s? I manage and organise a team of staff and ensure the safe and creative crafting of bespoke furniture to the client’s requirement. I meet clients at their homes or premises and discuss in detail what their options are and put forward ideas. Where did you train? Rycotewood College, where I gained a diploma in Furniture & Design.
“I was head hunted by David Linley Furniture.” The owner, of course, is Viscount Linley, the Queen’s nephew, and I worked there for the next ten years making fine bespoke furniture for some very rich and famous people. The furniture manufactured was fine inlay work and precise cabinet making! ❧ 36 ❧
Describe your typical day From the moment I arrive in work, at 8am most days, I begin by answering phonecalls and meet with the team to ensure they all have enough work to keep themselves busy through the day. I also have to make sure that all orders for materials are placed in plenty of time so that we have the correct stock and materials to complete the jobs we have. In between all of this I visit clients to discuss projects and, back on site, answer any enquiries and liaise with the team regarding any technical issues that may arise. Do you see any trends developing? Recently, the call for contemporary furniture as opposed to traditional furniture has been in higher demand, working with more oak and walnut furniture. A large proportion of our work is for bespoke kitchens in natural timber or hand-painted finishes.
“I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products.”
WILL DO Do you enjoy your job? I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products. I love the feel of the timber when the furniture is completed and enjoy seeing the faces of satisfied customers, many of whom have become firm friends. Who inspires you? My wife – she is my driving passion and supports me the most. What was your proudest moment? After the birth of my two beautiful children, Oliver and Lucy, it was making furniture for David Linley as the level of workmanship that had to be achieved was absolute perfection.
How do you get most of your work? We are pleased to say that we have had regular work and are very lucky that clients have highly recommended us to new potential customers, even allowing us to show clients their houses and the quality of work we produce. What do you do when you’re not creating beautiful furniture? We enjoy eating out and if we’re shopping on a Saturday afternoon in Cowbridge we’ll often pop into Bar 44 to relax with a refreshing drink and tapas food. I like to keep fit and enjoy running, swimming and cycling. What are your future plans? To continue to give an excellent service to our clients.

CITY STYLE Treat yourself and your loved ones this festive season PENARTH
Blu Hair Design sets the trends With over 27 hair salons in Penarth, how do you know which one to choose? Pick one that’s ever evolving and keeps up with trends. We talk to the owners of Blu Hair Design, Alexis and Hayley to find out what attracts clients to their salon and what’s new this season. What is it that attracts clients to Blu Hair Design? It’s all about listening to what the client wants for their cut and colour. That’s why we get to know the clients to determine their lifestyle and their ability to manage their hair once they've left the salon. In fact, all new clients undergo an in-depth consultation to determine the facts, even down to face shape and overall build which can determine the haircut that best suits them.
Basically, we listen and in response to all that listening, the salon has gone from strength to strength since it started out four years ago. What age ranges are your clients? They range from the very young to the young at heart! You’ve recently had a salon makeover. Can you tell us more? We wanted a sexier, ‘boudoir feel’ to the salon with chandeliers, ornate wall coverings and mirrors and a spacious and improved reception area to provide our clients with a five-star experience. It also makes for a nicer working environment for our staff. What’s new this season? We recently purchased a barber’s chair as Sophie, one of our Senior Designers, is a gents specialist. We can now offer hot towel shaves, which are proving very popular. Sophie is up to date with current trends such as low fades, wedged cuts and texturing.
We’re also part of the S.I.P. Shop in Penarth, a Loyalty Card Scheme for businesses in Penarth. There are lots of shops and cafés in Penarth that give discounts if you have the S.I.P. card. We offer a 10% discount on all services over £30 or for a gent’s haircut. Cards can be bought for just £1. What about Christmas? Leading up to the Christmas period, Blu will be extending its opening hours on certain Saturdays. They are 3rd and 10th December 8.30 - 4.30 pm. We have many clients asking for vouchers for family members or friends so we’re offering gift vouchers this season which can be used for a fabulous new hair colour or hairstyle.

I’d visited Lanzarote many years ago and thought I’d ‘done the Canaries’, so when friends offered us their apartment for two weeks, I thought it would be lovely but wasn’t prepared for how much I’d enjoy rediscovering the Canaries.
TEIDE LIKE Assuming all the islands of the Canaries are the same is my first mistake. Yes they’re volcanic but that’s really where it ends. As I mentioned, I’d been to Lanzarote and my wife had previously visited Tenerife staying in Las Americas but each island has its own personality.
This time we were staying in a sweet little apartment at the top of Los Cristianos with great views of the town and harbour. Whatever accommodation you’re looking for, from our travels, I’m confident Tenerife will have something for you. Los Cristianos proved extremely convenient for us as, within five minutes, we could be on Tenerife’s superb motorway, TF1, which hugs the coast of virtually three quarters of the island. The super-smooth TF1 made exploration very easy. There are three ‘must-do’ attractions on Tenerife. The first, and the one I was most looking forward to, is Teide National Park which includes an enormous crater, thirty miles in circumference, out of which rises Mount Teide at a jaw-dropping 12,200 feet (the highest peak in Spain. Yes, the Canaries are part of Spain). While it sounds inaccessible, the excellent roads lead through unexpected alpine-like scenery through the cloud line until the landscape dramatically changes to what I can only describe as ‘Mars like’.
I have to say that I was completely blown away. There’s a good visitor centre and the peak of Teide can be reached by cable car - a must if you want the full breathtaking Mount Teide experience. Siam Park, less than ten minutes away up the west coast, is Tenerife’s showcase water park. I have to say I was expecting a horribly commercial experience but can honestly say this is the best water park we’ve ever visited. It was a brilliant day, great fun and we’d recommend it without hesitation. The rides are excellent, there were no long queues and the staff are superb.
Loro Parque in Puerto de La Cruz on the north side of the island is simply fabulous. I’m not usually a fan of zoos but the whole experience left me reassessing my views. The animals are clearly well cared for. We were wowed by the sea lions, dolphins and killer whale shows and I must confess to being quite touched by the obvious emotional connection the staff have with these extraordinary creatures. Our twelve year old son thoroughly enjoyed the day and actually asked if we could return later in the holiday. It’s appropriate to mention the quality of food at Siam Park and Loro Parque. There was an excellent range of freshly prepared food in the restaurants and they were a pleasure to eat at.

Los Gigantes is a stunning coastal town at the base of the most enormous cliffs. We headed down to the harbour and had some great meals in a little restaurant on the harbour’s edge superb fish dishes and a great spaghetti Bolognese. Los Abrigos has a great harbour and we spent many afternoons diving here. There’s a stunning fish restaurant (Restaurant Los Abrigos) run by a family that have their own fishing boat. There’s also a great Italian restaurant called La Scarpetta which served up some beautifully rustic dishes. Lamb, beef, fish, you name it, La Scarpetta does it exceptionally well and is a must visit in our opinion. La Caleta. We discovered this pretty coastal village and loved diving off the rocks and enjoying chilled lunches in the little café/restaurant ten feet away. Two huge pieces of hake each, fries and fantastically fresh salad for just over ten Euros a head! It was on days like this that the obligatory ‘wouldn’t it be great to move to Tenerife?’ thoughts entered my completely relaxed brain. La Laguna is a university town next to the capital, Santa Cruz. Packed with culture, it has more than its fair share of great boutiques, bars and stylish cafes filled with great characters and the fashionably stylish but they’re encouragingly incognito. While Santa Cruz has fantastic shopping, not visiting La Laguna would be like going to St David’s 2 and not visiting Cardiff’s four Victorian arcades - you would have completely missed the point. We visited Tenerife with few preconceptions other than that it would be hot and dry. While we were there we discovered a vibrant island with a lot to offer, especially if you’re looking for a family holiday. I suppose the test is would we return? And the answer is we’ve already booked. For more information www.webtenerife.com

If selling your property is not an option but you need an extra room, naturally most people think of a conservatory or an extension. “Think orangery,” says Dean Edmonds who owns and runs Vale Orangeries with wife Leanne.
A BRIGHTER OUTLOOK
“An orangery can fit in exactly with your lifestyle.”
“With a glass lantern roof and fully insulated roof, walls and floor, it’s just like another room: not too hot in summer nor too cold in winter and lovely to be in during the day and evenings.
What if I have my own ideas on how it looks? Each orangery is bespoke, designed exclusively for you – you can choose to match the style of your home or contrast it – our design packages include recessed roof lighting, under floor heating, concealed wiring for a home theatre system, plus an interior design service for those all important finishing touches. The design possibilities are endless. Bifold doors which open up completely into the garden are a beautiful addition. It’s really a lifestyle choice. An orangery can change the way you live in your house – some of our customers tell us they now spend most of their time there, all year round!
It’s just so versatile. An orangery can fit in exactly with your family and lifestyle and will undoubtedly enhance your enjoyment of your home,” says Dean.
Can I try before I buy? We have several orangery show homes across the Vale of Glamorgan, which allows clients the opportunity to see our work and speak to our customers.
What’s the difference between an orangery and a conservatory or extension? An orangery represents the ideal combination of the benefits and looks of a conservatory and a more conventional extension. They are wonderfully light and airy spaces due to the glazed roofs as well as being cosy and inviting throughout the year. They provide unique multi-purpose living spaces.
What are you working on at the moment? Recent commissions include a large project in St Fagan’s. “Planning permission was a breeze!” says Leanne. “This build is finished in bricks matching the house and we have opened up the back of the house, allowing full interaction with the new orangery. The project includes a fully fitted modern kitchen in white high gloss units, with black granite worktops and a breakfast/diner bar built into the kitchen, linking it to the orangery with full underfloor heating throughout and bifold doors out to the garden.”
With so many rogue builders about, what assurances do you offer? Vale Orangeries provides a completely individual service and will project manage the build process from start to finish. “We work closely with you to try to incorporate all your requirements and keep within your budget. We have excellent testimonials from our clients and there is always the opportunity to view our work and speak to clients at our showhomes,” says Dean. What do I do next? Visit the website to see examples of their work or call Dean or Leanne to discuss how an orangery can work for the way you live.

BEAUTY ADVANCE Excessive or unwanted hair can be an embarrassing problem. If you have unwanted hair and you’ve thought about laser hair removal, but don’t know who to trust, then Daniela Evans of Beauty Advance Laser Clinic of Whitchurch can answer some of the questions you may have about laser hair removal. How does laser hair removal work? Highly controlled flashes of light energy are selectively absorbed by hair-filled follicles. The melanin absorbs the light and heats the hair shaft, destroying hair regrowth but not the surrounding skin. How many treatments will I need? The growth cycle will be influenced by age, hormones and gender. We recommend a minimum of 3, and on average, 5-6 treatments. Can all hair colours be treated? Lasers and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) work best on dark hair because the pigment melanin absorbs the laser light. Fair hair can respond well, but white hair, grey hair, very blond hair and some types of red hair respond poorly to lasers and IPL’s unless stained using a special melanin encapsulating solution. Can all parts of the body be treated? Using the latest laser technology we are able to treat all areas of the body quickly, safely and effectively. Is the treatment permanent? No single laser system destroys all hair follicles. Some follicles are destroyed, others are miniaturised and some enter a prolonged resting phase. It is possible that with a sufficient number of treatments, true permanent hair removal can be achieved. Is the treatment painful? No. However, there is a slight discomfort usually described by patients as a warm tingling sensation. No local anaesthetic is required as the treatment is tolerable. The treatments are so effective that patients can return immediately to work or their daily routine and hence there is no lost time.
Are there any after effects? Redness, and some discomfort of the area (like sunburn) may be present for the first few days following treatment. Blistering may occur in a small minority of patients, and this settles without treatment in a few days. How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis hair removal? Laser hair removal is much faster. Electrolysis hair removal requires more time because it’s a process that treats only one hair at a time, whereas laser hair removal treats many hairs per every laser pulse. For example, an area like the underarms, laser hair removal treatment can take only 20 minutes. Is it safe? We are registered by the Health Inspectorate of Wales (HIW) which ensures that we adhere to protocol at all times for your peace of mind. What’s the minimum age for laser hair removal? There really is no age limit, but we never treat toddlers. Young people that are not finished growing will develop new hair as they grow, and will require touch ups to maintain the results. We currently do not treat children under the age of thirteen. What’s the best advice you could give for someone considering this or any other beauty treatment? Always pop in for a free of charge consultation to find out more about the clinic, and the practitioner treating you. After all, people buy from people and there needs to be a trust and confidence built between the client and practitioner. The best practitioner will be honest about what can be achieved. Ask to see client testimonials.
“After years of electrolysis, Beauty Advance has been a revelation. I wish I had known about it years ago!” ❧ 46 ❧

Daniela has been in the beauty and laser treatment industry since 1988. Her clinic, Beauty Advance Laser Clinic and Beauty Salon, is a multi-operational clinic with an extremely high reputation and excellent client portfolio. Working alongside qualified plastic surgeons, doctors, nurses, practitioners and therapists - whether holistic or beauty - the feedback that is repeatedly given of Daniela is that she is totally professional, trustworthy, warm and caring.
“Every patient is treated like a human being, not just a line in the appointment book.”
What made you specialise in hair removal? As more and more clients were coming to us with this problem, we realised that there was a real need for it. What makes Beauty Advance different from other clinics? We are always on top of our game given the resources we have at our fingertips. We offer one-to-one service with every client, making sure they see the same therapist/practitioner or doctor at every appointment. This is important in order to build trust. Why not give the clinic a call for a consultation with Daniela? That unwanted hair could soon be a thing of the past. If you’ve been asking people to repeat things of late, if you can’t hear people properly when in a noisy room and you’re of a certain age, then you might be in need of a hearing test. Thankfully, Penarth’s first dedicated hearing centre, The Scott Wroe Hearing Centre, can help. City Life talks to owner Scott Wroe.
HEAR HEAR Why did you open in Penarth? For several years, we had a presence in Osmond Drake Optometrists in Glebe Street and built up a client base. This was growing so a clinic in Penarth was the logical next step. Tell me more about the centre. The business was originally set up by my father more than 35 years ago. We’re proud to be a totally independent business. Are you a member of any associations? Yes, I’m a fellowship member of the British Society of Audiology. What can customers expect from the centre? We’re a fully equipped, purpose-built hearing centre which provides advice, information, hearing tests, digital hearing aids and assistive listening devices. The Centre stocks all makes and models from the leading manufacturers of the latest hearing aids and accessories, including modern, discreet in-ear hearing aids.
I’ve heard Live Speech Mapping being mentioned. Please tell me more about this. We have a dedicated room to enable myself and my team to carry out the latest demonstrations of this service. It allows you to see first-hand how effective your hearing aids are in assisting your hearing loss, using real time speech. You will also gain a further understanding of your condition by seeing how speech is reaching your eardrum after being processed via wallmounted displays.
As an independent, we are lucky to be able to offer the most recent technologies, including integrated approaches that allow you to connect your hearing aid with televisions, mobile phones and other audio devices. This aims to give you normality and change your perception of impaired hearing by allowing you to hear as much as possible. What if I can’t get to the Centre? No problem. We are happy to arrange home visits.
Can you repair existing devices? Yes, if they can be fixed, then we can fix them. Why would customers come to you as opposed to opting for the NHS? The NHS does an amazing job given its resources, but what we can offer here is the personal approach. Myself and my team can match your individual needs in the utmost of confidences using the latest technology. Hearing aids have moved on so much from the unattractive devices of old. Nowadays they can be hardly visible which gives the wearer much more confidence. We can also provide a range of colours! We also follow the customer’s journey as they test the device, using our 30 day trial period, at home, in the workplace, with family and friends to ensure its suitability. Aftercare is of the utmost importance and is what brings customers back. If you do find yourself struggling with your hearing, then make an appointment for a consultation and hearing test.
“We’re a fully equipped, purpose-built hearing centre.”

TESTIMONIALS
“After over twenty years tolerating substantial hearing loss, relieved gratefully by NHS hearing aids, I was assured by them that due to the extent of my hearing loss no advantage would be gained by going private. Imagine my delight after finding out about Scott Wroe Hearing, a locally based independent family owned audiology service who, after a very patient, friendly, professional examination of my hearing loss using the latest state-of-the-art equipment, were able to prescribe and supply me with two ‘Phonak’ hearing aids. These have made a significant improvement to my quality of life, including many things I used to take for granted, especially communication with my grandchildren.
“Scott Wroe Hearing’s dedication to my need and care is a wonderful example to the profession, where sadly this is not always the case. I have recommended them to my friends and colleagues and I know that they all think the same.”

These are challenging times for businesses and the clever ones are doing everything they can to reduce overheads. The success of The Business Centre in Barry shows that quite a few are making…
THE SMART MOVE
The Business Centre in Barry understands that businesses are currently operating in the toughest economic climate of the modern age and that all companies are looking to make cutbacks without losing that five star service.
This has made the industry even more competitive than it was a couple of years ago. With luxurious office suites in the centre of Cardiff and a number of office facilities becoming available in all areas of Wales, how important is it to operate your business from the city centre?
The Sun Newspaper printed the following article on Tuesday 8th of March 2011, confirming that travelling time to the workplace has increased since 2006. How would you and your employees feel about reducing your commute to the workplace every day?
The Business Centre provides modern, flexible serviced office space with excellent customer service and support facilities, allowing you more time to concentrate on what’s really important running your business.
There are a number of reasons to consider this option with Cardiff being the capital of Wales and ease of public transport access. Basically, the fact that you can say you operate your business from Cardiff can be seen as beneficial. But, the city centre also has its negative aspects especially in today’s tough economic climate when businesses are trying to operate within a tight budget. Some of the negatives to working in the city centre are: ■ Traffic congestion ■ Travelling time to and from work ■ Inflated office prices ■ Public transport delays and breakdowns ■ Expensive car-parking fees
City congestion rises 14% Rush-hour city drivers spend nearly half their journeys in traffic jams, a study says. An average hour-long trip will see them stuck for 25 minutes 39secs – an increase of 14 per cent since 2006.
One monthly transparent invoice with no hidden charges gives clients the security of knowing their monthly capital outlay, minimum licence agreements of three months with a one month notice period to leave and office suites ranging from two to twelve people. The Business Centre provides the flexibility to clients looking for that perfect office suite in this difficult climate. Numerous office space/facilities are available in South Wales and also across the whole of the UK due to empty buildings and storage space being converted to office suites as a result of the recession.
Morning and evening rush-hour traffic was monitored in London, Manchester, Norwich, Birmingham and Cardiff. London drivers suffered most, averaging 36 mins 28 secs – up from 19mins 20secs five years ago. Manchester leapt from a 21-minute wait in 2006 to 28 mins 39 secs in the study for Citroen. A spokesman said: “Congestion is not getting better for traffic-weary drivers.”
“The Business Centre take care of you while you take care of your business, providing the flexibility to clients looking for that perfect office suite in this difficult climate.”
Dugdale Taylor have joined The Business Centre from the city centre over the past twelve months. They have expressed their views on why they chose to move out of the city centre and operate their companies from The Business Centre.
looking for along with competitive serviced office prices. The facilities at the centre are second to none with efficient IT and telecoms infrastructure, free parking, on-site gym, catering and storage facilities and staff willing to go that extra mile.
“The Business Centre provided D T & Co Wealth Management with the perfect solution to operate our business from a professional address within a tight budget. After operating our business from the city centre of Cardiff up until six months ago, as a company we were looking to reduce over-heads but without losing that five star service being provided to our clients. The Business Centre have been excellent in providing D T & Co Wealth Management and our clients with the high quality service we are
We looked long and hard to find suitable premises that provided all these benefits within one location. The centre is easy to access, situated five minutes from Culverhouse Cross with minimal traffic compared to commuting to the city centre. We would not hesitate in recommending The Business Centre to any clients who are looking for competitively priced office accommodation with customer service that is second to none.” Andrew Brinn, Dugdale Taylor

The Business Centre, in Barry, are now proud to offer the new concept of shared office space in the Vale of Glamorgan where clients can operate their businesses from a shared office environment at a reduced monthly rental but with all the benefits of flexible serviced office facilities. The shared office environment includes four workstations with state-of-the-art IT and telecoms infrastructure, fully furnished office space and sectioned workspace for privacy. They can have your business up and running within 24 hours with minimal disruption to your working hours - they take care of you while you take care of your business. James Mason, Centre Manager at The Business Centre, highlights the most commonly asked questions for the shared office facility. 5 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR SHARED OFFICE FACILITIES
What is the shortest licence agreement you provide for the shared office facility? The Business Centre Shared Office Facility is provided on a monthly rolling agreement with a month’s notice to cancel the facility and leave the premises. It’s entirely up to the client as we can also provide agreements of three, six and twelve months. The flexibility we provide ensures clients at The Business Centre feel comfortable with the length of agreement for their business. What’s included in the monthly rental? The Shared Office Facility monthly rental of £165 plus vat per month will include all furniture (one unit),
telephone line rental, internet connection, 24 hour access with swipe card and office key, free parking, call answering facilities, use of the business address, use of the free in-house gym, all utility bills and business rates, cleaning services, use of break-out areas and the coffee zone. The only pay-as-you-go services that a client would be charged as extra will be for any services that you use such as postage, meeting room hire, telephone call charges etc. Basically, at The Business Centre, the monthly invoice you receive includes everything you need to operate your business from a set base with a professional and prestigious business address. What type of business or personnel is it targeting? The Shared Office Facility is mainly targeting any businesses that are looking to operate from an office suite that provides them with a credible image to their business. If you are a start-up company who is operating on their own, a freelancer or work as a satellite office then the shared office facility would be the ideal option. Our current clients include graphic designers, financial consultants and many other professions where the one workstation would be a benefit to their companies. How many other companies will be sharing the office suite? The Shared Office Facility has four workstations within the office suite so at maximum it will be with three other professionals. Each area is sectioned with screen dividers and lockable pedestals, giving clients that extra privacy when operating their businesses. ❧ 53 ❧
What’s the difference between the shared office facility and a dedicated serviced office suite? The shared office facility includes the monthly rental and broadband connection and telephone line rental, making it the ideal option for start-up enterprises and sole traders to operate their business from a credible business centre and address. The shared office facility includes all the benefits and services of the serviced office suites. The dedicated serviced office suite includes a breakdown of the three, where you will be paying the office rental separately to the IT connection and telephone line rental. Once you have acquired the shared office space and if, in the future, you are looking to grow your business, flexibility at The Business Centre ensures that we can provide you with an upgrade to the office suites themselves with no movement charges.

Describe what you do in ten words or less I run 10 Domino’s franchises across South Wales. How did I get this far? I think I have great people skills. I wasn’t afraid to take risks and change my career path. I think hard work, long hours and dedication to my company have got me to where I am today. What drives me? My two children as everything I am doing I am doing for them. For just one day I'd like to walk in the shoes of... Jesus, although I’m not Christian. On the day of his crucifixion he begged God not to hurt the people who were torturing him and killing him, and he forgave them. I think it is utterly incredible. I’d like to understand what was going through his head and how he could think that way. My last supper would be... A Domino’s pizza or a really good Argentinian steak with English mustard. Album that changed my life Abba and Wham albums as I find them very nostalgic, they bring back a lot of memories.
Books that influenced me the most A Study in the Society of Iraq by Dr Ali Al Wardi an Iraqi historian and psychologist. He is both my father’s and my favourite author. He helped me understand my people and how culture worked in different regions and religions; it enabled me to have a deeper understanding of my people. Early bird or night owl? Early bird. Most significant travel moment Cuba, the best holiday ever. Places I love Lebanon. South of Spain. Cardiff.
“Hard work, long hours and dedication to my company have got me to where I am today.” Life-changing moment Meeting my beautiful wife. The cynic in me says... I have a very positive and upbeat outlook, but I do believe people only deserve one chance. Once someone has broken my trust I cannot rebuild it. My bugbears are... Dishonesty, ignorance and bad manners.
My mentors I have a great business advisor and accountant. When I’m not working I love... Spending time with my wife and children and watching football. Five things to do before I die... ■ For my children to be well educated ■ Make sure my children see the house where I was born ■ I would like to see that every child on this earth is fed properly ■ Love to do a tour of South America ■ I’d like to build a refuge centre in the province of Mesan in the South of Iraq where my father was born, then roll it out to all other provinces.

PROFILE SARA JONES
Describe what you do in ten words or less Head of Grayling Wales - Wales’ longest established public affairs consultancy. How long have you been in business? I have been working in the public affairs industry for almost ten years. Who or what inspires you? My team inspires me. I work with great people and have the benefit of learning from them as well as offering support and guidance. I love working with such young, vibrant people who are creative and measured. What is your greatest achievement? Working for one of the UK’s leading public affairs / public relations agencies, growing the team in Wales and building on our client base, to deliver the highest standards consistently and gain the best results for all of our clients. What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them? As a team we need to be able to adapt and react to an ever changing political environment. Working for clients from all sectors of Welsh life means that we need to be responsive and have a vast knowledge across all policy areas.
This certainly provides a challenge which we overcome through a team approach, regular communications and each doing our bit to keep up to date. What do you do to relax? Socialising, meeting up with friends and driving tractors! I’m a farmer’s daughter and I live with my partner on his farm in Usk, so Wales’ beautiful countryside has always been a big part of my life and provides the perfect environment for relaxing. I am also an avid race goer and enjoy any opportunity to combine my love of horse racing, champagne and socialising! To what extent are you motivated by money? It is nice to be rewarded for working hard and growing a thriving office in Wales. However, as long as I can live comfortably and fulfil my ambitions then money, ultimately, is not the main driving force in my life. How do you balance work with your family life? In our particular line of work attending evening and weekend events is a key part of the role and you need to be able to respond rapidly to external developments which means it can sometimes be a little difficult to switch off and relax. It helps being part of a wider network of offices where we can draw upon a wider resource during busy periods.

What are the most important lessons you will pass on to your offspring? ‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ will open doors. Don’t just act polite, be polite. Always pursue what interests you rather than what interests other people. Where do you see yourself or your business in five years? Hopefully Grayling will continue to grow and prosper in Wales, and we will expand our client base through our contacts across Wales, the rest of the UK and globally. What have you learned? That building a strong team, whether that be in a working environment or outside of work, is key to success and general wellbeing. I try and surround myself with people that I know I can learn from and who I can rely on 100%. If you had three wishes, what would they be? ■ To have a long and successful career which continues to be diverse and multi-faceted ■ That my friends and family have success and happiness ■ Continue to have as much fun in the next 30 years as I’ve had in the last! PROFILE KERRY JONES
Describe what you do in ten words or less We provide a domestic cleaning service of the highest standard. How long have you been in business? Three months. Who or what inspires you? I’m inspired to be all I can be when I see the influence it has on my son. He is happy to work for his pocket money, he likes to give to others and is a frequent supporter of Water Aid. What is your greatest achievement? Raising a well balanced, kind and courteous young man who I’m proud to say is my son and establishing my business without any financial loans or borrowing. What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them? The biggest challenge is to get our name out there without spending the earth. We have hired a media group and using their methods will save us a lot in the long run. What do you do to relax? I love spa days, sitting in the garden on a sunny day, driving in the rain and reading a good book.
How do you balance work with your family life? I live and breathe by my diary so there is a certain allotment of time given each week for family time; whether that be our evening meal together at the table or walking our dogs we make sure we connect regularly. No matter how busy I am I always know exactly where my son is and what he’s doing. To what extent are you motivated by money? Nobody wants to live in poverty. I am motivated by money to the degree that it provides not only a good standard of living for myself and my family but it also opens up the possibilities of new experiences. What are the most important lessons you will pass on to your children? Trust your instincts. Pursue your dreams. Don’t let time pass you by and treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.
What have you learned? ■ That there is no sentiment in business and you learn very quickly who you can trust and who you cannot ■ Risk assessment is absolutely crucial to a business and failing to plan is planning to fail ■ Always revisit your original business plan and update along the way ■ No path to success is ever a straight running road so it helps to record and plot each step you take for future learning ■ Image is important. How you present yourself and your business to your audience is something that should be at the forefront of your mind around the clock ■ You may leave your business premises at 5pm but at all times you represent your business and everyone that you may encounter is a potential customer even if you are just having a few drinks on a Friday night.
Where do you see yourself or your business in five years? Our goal is to become a leading UK service provider and a domestic brand, with the potential to become a franchise.
If you had three wishes, what would they be? ■ I wish to live a long, meaningful and purposeful life ■ A cure for all pain and suffering ■ That there were more opportunities and funding for enterprise for our youth of today.
As for myself I would like to have established myself as a key business player in South Wales and hopefully inspire our youth to look to enterprise as the path to their future success.

PROFILE ROB HODGE
Tell us a little about your background I spent nineteen years as Head Gardener at Tredegar House, a seventeenth century mansion in Newport. During this period I was involved in the restoration of all the major gardens across this 90 acre estate, and saw the work nationally recognised in 1998 by winning the award for the Best Kept Parks and Gardens in Britain. Following this, I spent five years assessing and training NVQ students, which led to me starting my own business in 2003. I specialise in soft landscaping - creating and maintaining gardens with plants in mind. Are you a member of any gardening clubs or societies? Yes, I’m a member of the Royal Horticultural Society. What do your services include? Period garden restoration and maintenance, garden improvements, design and planting including cottage and herb gardens, lawn management, fruit tree training and pruning, planting water features, supplying ready planted baskets and containers and NVQ training and assessing. My passion is for country gardens that need that extra special attention to bring them back to where they should be.
What areas do you cover? Newport, Cardiff, Bridgend, South Wales Valleys, Vale of Glamorgan, Cwmbran, Usk Valley, Pontypool, Abergavenny, Chepstow, Caldicot and Bristol.
“My passion is for country gardens that need that extra special attention.”
What do you do when you’re not working? Well, I have just become a granddad so the dynamics around our lives have changed somewhat, with a grandson born in the spring and another granddaughter due to arrive any day soon, my spare time is already filled. When I do get the chance, I am a keen Landrover enthusiast and its great to drive out into the countryside with my wife Lyn. I’m also an adult instructor with the army Cadet Force so you could say my spare time is pretty full. Sum yourself up in three words. Happy, contented, lucky. In a nutshell, my philosophy is … I wish everybody would apply this to their work ‘know your subject, keep the standards high and never become complacent’. What are your top five gardening jobs this autumn? ■ Plant any remaining bulbs ■ Cut down spent perennials ■ Start manuring vegetable beds and herbaceous borders ■ Plant new hedges ■ Think about protecting tender plants from severe frosts and snow. I suppose I’m doing myself out of work here aren’t I! Perhaps I should be saying ‘you could always give me a call and I’ll give you a quote for doing the work for you.’ Rob Hodge Horticulture 01633 744075 www.robhodgehorticulture.co.uk

The event, held in memory of Richard Jenkins, who at just 37, passed away from coronary heart disease was organised by his brotherin-law Michael Bishop of Seven Financial Group. THE LAST WORD Chris Reynolds owns and manages Fonehouse in Penarth and when he isn’t setting up customers’ email and mobile broadband or downloading apps, you’ll find him cycling around Cardiff (but he’ll still be thinking about mobile phones). Please tell us about Fonehouse. We’re on Glebe Street in Penarth. We sell mobile phones, accessories and data solutions (internet on phone, mobile laptop) for private and business customers. I breathe, eat and sleep mobile phones - it’s what I do. How long has Fonehouse been in Penarth? Two years. I really like it here. What brands do you offer? All the top brands: HTC, Samsung, Nokia, Apple iPhone, BlackBerry plus a large range of accessories, chargers, incar chargers, cases, memory cards and sticks and a large range of Bluetooth from dongles to car kits. Is there anything you don’t know about phones? I’d like to think I’m on top of the game. Come in and put us to the test. What phone do you use? It’s an HTC Desire. It’s an awesome piece of kit. It does everything. Simple to use. It has excellent internet access and uses the Android operating system which, personally, I think is the most user friendly. And it works as both a personal and business phone. It’s brilliant – thousands of free games and applications (apps). What do you like about Penarth? People are friendly and it’s by the sea. What do you do when you’re not at Fonehouse? I love swimming with my son and I’m just getting into cycling.
“Chris offers a free tariff review and will guarantee to find you the right phone at the right price and with the right tariff.”
How’s business? Business is okay - we’re expanding into new areas. For example, we’re doing more with business (b2b) and commercial customers. We’ve developed a great selection of tariffs for business users. With this and the great deals we provide for personal customers, we think this is a very exciting time - lots of opportunities.
“We find that a lot of new customers are on too high a tariff because they have just never had a tariff review.”
Why should people come to you and not directly to the larger mobile phone chains? I believe we offer a much more personal service. We have the time to ensure customers have an excellent level of service that they expect and to find the right phone and package that suits them. All too often with the bigger chains, they’re so busy that they just can’t give you the quality of service mobile customers deserve. Also, we’re completely impartial so we’re not tied to a particular network.
What networks do you offer? All the major mobile networks: Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 – they’re really our main ones. Quality of signal varies widely in the Vale. It’s a rural reception so signal strength can literally vary from street to street. Are you offering any incentives or promotions at present? We always have great deals instore, and anyone who comes in and signs up or takes out a new contract or upgrade will be entered into a free prize draw.
Additionally, we provide a number of services such as setting up phones and email for our customers. It’s that extra level of service that you just don’t get from the big boys. Where do you see Fonehouse in a few years? Hopefully with more shops across the Vale - across South Wales even providing the same standard of service we offer our customers in Penarth. Where do your customers come from? Right across the Vale and Cardiff. We also get quite a bit of business from tourists and visitors to the area. What’s your most popular seller at this moment? HTC are extremely popular and are outselling every other phone here at Fonehouse - they’re probably our biggest sellers. We’re also seeing BlackBerry and Samsung selling quite well too. ❧ 67 ❧
