Spring might be the season for the most dramatic weather changes but I think Autumn is where everything changes.

It’s not just the darker nights and bare trees but we change as humans too. We get our nests ready for the cold, we cook soups and pies and we tend to our homes, cosifying and shoaring up against the winds. Christmas might be knocking on our door, but for now, it’s all about comfy, cwtchy layers, cackling fires and family time. Have I just described hibernation? I suppose I have.

The Queen B, Penarth provided the gorgeous clothes, models Jodie Tanner (owner of The Queen B), Erian, Charlotte and Gabby made the clothes look amazing. Blu Hair Design, also of Penarth, and local make-up artist Victoria Valentine created the look we were aiming for with style. All that was needed was a photographer to capture the many looks and moments and Paul Cornish of CWC Imagery certainly did that.

Hamptons customers are pure gold Hamptons, Penarth are overwhelmed, yet again, at the Olympic sized generosity of their customers. Over £180 was raised as a result of their recent Olympic Art Competition and Olympic Torch photo-shoot which benefited the Teenage Cancer Trust, a registered charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.

The talented winners; Niamh Bannister and Siân Blackburn were photographed with 400m Olympic medallist Jamie Baulch, Grammy award winning soprano Rebecca Evans and Olympic torchbearer Lara Cowpe with her Olympic torch. Winner of the pre-school category, Carys Evans, was on holiday for the photo call but luckily her grandparents, Mr & Mrs Edwards, were on hand to accept Carys’ prize on her behalf.

Peter Knowles of Hamptons commented, “Lara was thrilled with the total and we’ve had great feedback from the people who had their photos taken. We also thank Rebecca Evans, Jamie Baulch and Lara Cowpe, as their personal commitment undoubtedly made this event the success it was. Their assistance, and our customers generosity, means so much to us but even more to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Thank you from all of us.”

Members of the public then also had the opportunity to have their photographs taken with the Olympic torch in return for a donation to The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Many anglers caught good fish with some carp caught between 20 and 30lb. Local knowledge prevailed though, and saw the Welsh team through to a comfortable win over the English at 316.4lb to 180.11lb.

Money is still coming in from the event but it looks like the anglers will reach their £2000 target, maybe even more. Donations can still be made through the events JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/The-Carp-Nations

As Chris Robinson commented from the winning team, “What a great weekend and well done the Welsh boys. However, I can’t fault the effort all the the boys have made fundraising, and to be honest that was the real meaning of the event.”

Make A Wish Foundation UK is a charity with a single purpose - to grant magical wishes to children and young people aged 3-17 fighting life-threatening conditions.

Lamby Lake helps make wishes from fishes Lamby Lake has been fundraising again, this time for the Make A Wish Foundation. The event was inspired by the passing of a young friend of fisheries manager, Richard Bennewith. The event was called the Carp Nations in which ten Welsh Anglers would fish in a team event against ten English anglers to battle it out for the most fish caught. Richard said, “He was an inspiration to us all and raised a lot of money for the Make A Wish Foundation whilst he was very ill. Make A Wish helped inspire him to live some of his dreams by creating his own wish list. It was a very sad loss and I just wanted to do something to help.” Twenty anglers fished during the 48 hour charity match at Lamby Lake in Cardiff to try and raise over £2,000 for the charity on the 7th September 2012. Ten Welsh anglers and ten English anglers participated, many of whom wore fancy dress. The sun shone and everyone enjoyed a great weekend at the fishery.

This is the second fundraising event at Lamby Lake, as twenty anglers raised well over £3000 for local childrens’ cancer charity LATCH in 2009. ❧ 4 ❧

Shades Hairdressers of Cardiff When the autumn weather hits, that’s when all sorts of damage can happen to your hair. From split ends to dry frizz, hat hair and static electricity, the weather can leave your hair susceptible to a whole host of unwanted environmental influences. Owner of Shades of Whitchurch, Sarah Wilbrahim says, “The environment can play havoc with our hair, both in summer and winter, but in winter it’s often worse because people tend not to take as many precautions to protect their hair.

A blustery wind (which can tangle hair) as well as rain, icy cold (which makes hair brittle and dry) and even the snow can take their toll. To combat the cold, we turn up the dial on the central heating, which we all know can be likened to spending an afternoon under a hairdryer.” The good news is that you can take both protective and replenishing steps by using the correct productsShades of Whitchurch use only the best products available. Label.m is the designers’ and session stylists’ hair care of choice and is used backstage at London Fashion Week’s 70+ shows. The formulas contain naturally sourced active ingredients and essential oils and are free from harmful chemicals which can damage the hair. The staff at Shades of Whitchurch are fully trained at identifying which products perfectly suit the condition of each client’s hair. Especially important at the moment is a rich, thick, moisturising conditions with a few key ingredients which combat the effects of the weather and leave client’s hair in peak condition, looking thick, lustrous and healthy. The products are available to buy at the salon to ensure that the quality and condition of the hair can be maintained. ❧ 7 ❧

Fashion Week Wales comes to Cardiff Fashion Week Wales will be official launched on Saturday October 13th with a prestigious, invite only, red carpet gala at the museum. The evening will showcase some of the confirmed designers but will also be a celebration of welsh success with influential people from the world of fashion, sport, music, film and television. The champagne reception and three course dinner, presided over by chef Shawn Hill, will be a taster of what is to follow in March. March 1st-3rd will see three days of fashion shows within the grounds of Cardiff Castle. Designers will range from graduates from UWCN, Glamorgan and Coleg Sir Gar (some of whom have shown at Londons Graduate Fashion Week) to more established designers and even a few famous names. It is intended to be an egalitarian platform for all designers to show equally irrelevant of status.

“...an egalitarian platform for all designers.”

Fashion Week Wales has sought the advice of some of the most influential people on the fashion industry from Julien MacDonald to Hilary Alexander and Colin Mcdowell and it hopes to bridge the gap between Wales and Welsh design and the rest of the world. Says Robyn Coles, the director of Fashion Week Wales, “there is such a great pool of creative talent here in Wales it is time for it to be showcased on a global stage.” But it doesn’t stop there; “In the future we would also like to bring production and manufacturing of fashion clothing back to Wales, its time we stopped looking elsewhere for things we can do and make ourselves.” The event is being heavily endorsed and supported by everyone from welsh government to celebrity figures like Alex Jones who says, “I’m excited to see new fashion design talent in my home country - its about time Wales had our own fashion week!” Applications for designer submissions are open and tickets for the shows will be on sale in the new year. Hawkes Essentials style, comfort, quality We’ve all been there. We’ve trudged through the city looking for a suit for the big day and all that the High Street stores can offer are illfitting, bland and boring numbers made of synthetic material which, when worn are often itchy and uncomfortable, only to come home minus said suit, feeling deflated and dreading the thought of having to go back into town for another go. Well, gentlemen, the solution is Hawkes Essentials. Owner Russell ScottLawson and his trusted team can build or hire you a suit which will fit the bill perfectly and elicit favourable comments from friends, family and many other wedding guests Don’t just take our word - here’s what one very satisfied customer had to say: “Just wanted to write and thank you for all your help and advice and for dressing me and my ‘men of honour’ so finely and smart on my wedding day. As you know, Ruth loved the suit, and everyone commented on how amazing all the lads looked.

The wedding of Dani and Marc Photography by Marcusbellphoto.com

The colour and style fitted our wedding perfectly and went so well with the bridesmaids outfits. I’ll be returning again and again to Hawkes – you are very lovely, friendly and helpful people with a genuine love for what you do and clearly years of experience in knowing style and quality. I have since used my suit at another wedding where, again, I received many compliments. My dad, ever one to extol excellence, raved about the suits and wants to get something similar for the band! Thanks again for all your help, the bag was also amazing on my honeymoon travels! See you all soon.” Tim Snell ❧ 8 ❧

When stories reached us of a Penarth woman who claims she has a gift for healing people of serious illnesses, we felt we had to pay her a visit. We put our scepticism aside and met with Anne Rodgers to find out more.

BORN TO HEAL When did you first know you had a gift? I was forty two - on the night of 21st September 1995. Two nights prior to this date, I had looked up at my bedroom ceiling and it had completely disappeared. I now know this to be a sign. There were lots of bright colours and, inside, I just knew that something had changed.

Around that time, my daughter was having terrible ongoing problems with her feet. The skin was peeling away and she was in a lot of pain. I asked her to take the bandages off and my hands were automatically drawn to them. My hands became icy cold and I hovered them over her burning feet. After this, the blisters healed up. At the time, I owned a hair salon and it was shortly after this incident that people randomly starting turning up hoping to be healed. I had never met these people before or knew them in any way. How do you do it? I have ‘my boys’ next to me that guide me in the healing process. It is my belief that they were doctors or surgeons in previous lives and they heal through me. We all have energy lines which make up a life force. I tap into those energy lines and re-balance any inconsistencies, removing any negative energy. What illnesses have you healed? All sorts. Lots of different kinds of cancer, endometriosis, gall stones, kidney stones, alopecia, ovarian cysts - you name it. I love a challenge. My favourites are infections because these give quick results. I have worked with men, women and children of all ages. Why do you think you were chosen? I’m no academic, but I am a caring, giving person. Perhaps that’s why. Why did you decide to write your book ‘The God Conclusion’? I feel that I have been blessed with this gift. It is written from the heart and I hope it will reach people and open their minds to possibilities.

“I first visited Anne nearly ten years ago, because following my breast cancer, I had endured four years of intermittently debilitating back problems. My father dropped me off and I walked into Anne’s flat hunched over. When I came out, I was standing upright!” “I pushed my wife out of hospital in a wheelchair and after a few healing sessions with Anne she walked back in to her next appointment. Now we are dancing three to four times a week. And this year my wife is eighty.” Names and addresses supplied

The Meating Place raises the steaks Our party of three, mum, dad and a fussy-eating thirteen year old son made our way to The Meating Place in a busy St Mary Street on a Saturday afternoon in September. We were welcomed by Charlene Field, the General Manager. Right away, we liked her. She has a bubbly, easygoing personality that puts you at ease. Charlene showed us to our table, took our orders for drinks and presented us with menus. Starters consisted of lamb ribs with spiced quinoa for me and pressed duck terrine with quince jelly, pickled walnuts and sour dough for dad and nothing for Mr Fussy. He’d said that nothing tickled his fancy but then proceeded to wolf down the lamb ribs, leaving mum with a just a plate of quinoa. All quiet from dad so the terrine was definitely a hit. Mains were Lamb Cawl ‘our way’- leg, shoulder and rib with pearl barley and broth for hubby, A 10oz Rib eye steak and chips with pepper sauce for moi, and a mixed meat skewer (chicken, lamb and beef) respectively for the aforementioned fussy one. A good sign that food is being enjoyed is when all mobiles or Nintendo DS are forgotten and conversation is minimal.

Charlene has a good knowledge of the wines available and recommended a Chardonnay. A creature of habit (my habit being Sauvignon), I was reluctant to try it but Charlene assured me that I would be pleasantly surprised, which I most certainly was. Even hubby commented on how good it was. We rounded off a very pleasant meal with roast pineapple with coconut sorbet and pan juices and summer fruit trifle and doughnuts - totally delicious. Head Chef Eric Field made an appearance as it was end of service and we beckoned him over for a chat. We noticed a South African twang, which explained his love for meat and his admirable ability to cook it (meat is big in South Africa don’t you know!).

“The Meating Place was good but it’s just got even better! We also spotted that he had the same surname as Charlene, the General Manager and, yes, they are man and wife and they are loving every minute of working together. This marriage of cooking and front of house is obviously working well not just for them but for the restaurant and its diners. The Meating Place has a happy kitchen - you can feel it in the ambience and taste it in the food. Bottom line, The Meating Place was good but it’s just got even better! The couple have great plans for the restaurant and have now started serving breakfast from 10am until 12pm and Sunday lunches. I think we’ll try one of these on our next visit.

World of Wine Dinners The best of both worlds It’s hard to imagine finding two better independent businesses situated next door to each other than Houghton Wine Company and Snails Deli & Cafe. And the passions of both come together on the first Friday of every month for their World of Wine Dinners. These evenings focus on a particular wine region, with the wines supplied by Houghton Wine Company, and the food of the region lovingly prepared by Snails Deli.

The price of £40 includes four courses vegetarian options available - matched with four different wines (generously poured by the knowledgeable owners of Houghton). In August, Southern France (Languedoc) was the region explored on the taste buds and as each course delivered new flavours to discuss and enjoy a great atmosphere was created. The unusual Vermentino grape proved to be a refreshing way to kick the night off, and make a perfect accompaniment to the ham hock terrine with celeriac and apple ramoulade. The vegetarians were challenged to a chilled potato and leek soup.

The second course of grilled mackerel with cucumber (v: egg mayonnaise with green salad) was accompanied by the fabulous Picpoul de Pinet - a Houghton gem. The diners were by now clearly having a good time and the main course of Confit of duck with petit cassoulet and green salad (V: vegetable cassoulet) was served with the nights star wine attraction, Terrasses du Larzac Rouge 2008. This dark, delicious and intense wine is one of Houghton’s best. The evening finished with the superb nougat glace with hazelnut and fruit coulis and the uplifting lemon overtones of a Muscat de St. Jean de Minervois. It proved to be a wonderfully refreshing finale to another great World of Wine Dinner. Review by Alan Golding

No need to travel for Authentic Chinese We probably chose one of the best evenings of the year to sample the hospitality at .cn Authentic Chinese Restaurant on Cardiff’s restaurant mile. We’re welcomed enthusiastically over the heads of half a dozen of the cutest little Chinese girls and boys who happen to be playing at the entrance. The place is full, and of mostly Chinese families - that has to be a good sign. Our host Nathan (no Nathan isn’t Chinese but his business partner is) shows us to our table and explains that tonight is a Moon Festival celebration and there’ll be a lion dance. We’re intrigued. Our drinks arrive. Jennifer is on a lady detox so it’s bottled water for a week or two. My Tsingtao beer hits the spot and our lad settles for a Sprite. As we look around, we notice that many of the families have a large pot in the centre of the table into which all manner of fresh ingredients are being dropped and cooked. Nathan suggests we have the same. We like the theatre of cooking our own food (it’s certainly a conversation starter) so we go for it, although our thirteen year old insists on a side order of egg fried rice.

Our son loves prawns so he delighted in dropping big, fat, tasty prawns into the pot which literally took minutes to cook and then fishing them out. We spent the next hour chatting away until we could eat no more.

The pot is divided into two - one half has a spicy stock and the other side a vegetable broth. You have a wide selection of meats, vegetable and seafood and you basically get on with it. Nathan explained that Chinese families like to take a couple of hours over this kind of meal, dipping in and out as they get peckish.

Our evening was made all the more entertaining by the arrival of lion dance group who put on an excellent display and had us all clapping and cheering with appreciation. Have to say, one of the best night’s out in a long time. Would I return? Definitely, this is one Cardiff restaurant that delivers a superb experience.

I can honestly say I haven’t enjoyed a meal as much in ages. The restaurant offers an excellent range of the usual Chinese favourites and, from what I could see, does them very well, but the theatre of cooking at the table is one I urge everyone to try - huge fun.

A kaleidoscope of colourful cuisine Haveli’s name is derived from the Persian word hawli, meaning ‘an enclosed place’, and usually one with historical and architectural significance. This colourful City Road restaurant is the inspiration of owner Shaz Haris. “Our name describes an Indian Mansion which provides security and comfort in elegant seclusion from the outside world. Our ethos is to create great cuisine using spices to seduce and excite your senses in surroundings rich with beautiful design and this is what attracts people to Haveli,” he says proudly. Haveli is certainly colourful. There’s an immediate air of creativity when you step inside and the rich Eastern influences don’t stop at the interior. The food is beautiful and, thankfully, not in that over-fussy wannabe Michelin kind of way. However, while I’m a great believer in the ‘we eat with our eyes’ philosophy, I let my taste buds do the research on this occasion and the Haveli brigade didn’t disappoint.

“It’s clear that the same creativity, influence and care that went into the branding and interior didn’t halt at the kitchen door.”

It’s clear that the same creativity, influence and care that went into the branding and interior didn’t halt at the kitchen door. The food was wonderful. Each dish was cooked perfectly and the balance of spices and seasoning was quite surprising. I’m not sure why I was surprised - I suppose it’s because so often these days many restaurants are literally ‘created’ by teams of interior designers and branding experts and, all too often, the actual food fails to live up to the vision. Not so at Haveli. This is Indian cuisine as it should be; and, if the number of customers popping in to collect takeaways was anything to go by, even if you can’t get a table, you can always enjoy Haveli At Home. Trust me, whether it’s a romantic dinner for two or a corporate evening out, Haveli has all the ingredients to make it a memorable one.

RHIWBINA Explore a remarkable and historic village where you will find hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Rhiwbina boasts a thriving community of independent retail shops, professional services, along with wonderful places to eat and drink. The businesses are wide and varied, where you will always find a warm welcome, expert advice and excellent customer service.

Rhiwbina is probably one of the best examples of a ‘Garden Village’ in Wales. Over a century ago land was purchased to build houses as a healthy alternative to overcrowded inner city living. In 1976 this became a conservation area with many houses listed by CADW. With so many interesting and varied businesses, you can easily spend a morning or afternoon there and if you’ve got time to spare, take a stroll through the lanes and discover the picturesque homes, interesting landmarks, beautiful gardens and parks... there’s even a babbling brook. And, with Christmas just around the corner, you can tick off all of those Christmas gifts in Rhiwbina.

From Haus to home form and function When looking to redesign one room or the whole house, hands up who first thought of Maskreys to do the job? That’s no surprise, the iconic store had the lion’s share of this business for many, many years. Lucky for us then that two former employees Vivian Llewellyn and Gail Jones set up their own interior design business in the bustling village of Rhiwbina over a year ago. Haus specialises in made-to-measure curtains and blinds, curtain tracks and poles, wallpaper and home accessories. They’ve kept in touch with former employees of Maskreys who have since started their own businesses and work with them to offer additional services such as carpets and flooring, an upholsterer and a French polisher. Whilst they may not be as big as Maskreys once was, they can offer the same services. Maskreys was renowned for sourcing unique contemporary brands and products and, luckily, they have managed to do the same with brands from Sweden, Germany, Belgium and France.

They can also offer the more traditional, classic look if that’s what the customer requires and feels more comfortable with. We asked Gail and Vivian why they specifically chose Rhiwbina to set up their business. “We really wanted to be in a vibrant, busy and lively environment and, after an extensive search, found the perfect village and premises on the high street. There is a great mix of small independent businesses here and there’s a good feel to the place. It’s a joy to be here and shop here.” ❧ 19 ❧

RHIWBINA

Home is where the heart is My favourite place in Wales is my home village of Rhiwbina, one of the most northern villages in the suburbs of Cardiff. I was born and raised then until I flew the nest when I was 18 and now reside here in foggy San Francisco, California. I like to return to Rhiwbina whenever I get the chance though, to see my family and be reminded of the good old days. Rhiwbina is an extremely attractive place and in many respects is quite the quintessential Welsh village. The little village is the true heart of suburbia and offers traditional shops such as a good butchers and small shops offering good solid Welsh fare, with a small church at the very centre. The village has undergone many changes in recent years - the lovely little bakers (Janets Pantry) closed, no longer is there a post office and the corner store is no more, where I used to buy wine gums as a child. Nonetheless, Rhiwbina still feels like a charming old village with the impressive rolling hills of the Wenallt looking down on it all. ❧ 22 ❧

The annual village fete is still the highlight of community life here and still happens every single year. How I remember playing the trumpet in the fete when I was a boy. I haven’t been to it for over a decade now, but I see photos posted online. Despite the changes that have happened, it still looks exactly the same to me, and this is how I will always remember Rhiwbina. There is something so comforting to know that this little piece of home will always be there, even when I am so far away. You can take someone out of Wales, but you really can never take Wales out of them. Christopher D. Lewis If you would like to follow Christopher, he’s @ twitter.com/newharpsichord

When you talk to Steve and Claire, the one thing that comes across is their passion for design. City Life caught up with the couple at their design studio in Cardiff. Your reputation is for creating kitchens and living spaces. Why the move into bedrooms? STEVE We have designed bedroom furniture for clients but it’s been based around our German kitchen furniture. We’ve been looking for the right bedroom furniture product for a while and have found an Italian company that manufactures the most beautiful bedroom furniture.

What’s special about this product? CLAIRE As a woman, I probably have a different perspective, but I think the devil is in the details. The finish, the look, when you touch the material you can feel the love that’s gone into the manufacturing. Italians are passionate about design. Their whole philosophy and ethos is driven by design and style. Look at Lamborghini and Ferrari, they’re much more than cars, they’re art. We want people to feel good when they walk into a bedroom that we’ve created we want it to lift their soul. Beautiful things have that effect.

STEVE Claire’s right. As a designer, I want the relationship between form and function to be seamless and this range is just so beautiful to work with. It’s versatile in every way. Whatever and however the customer wants to store or present their clothes, this product allows you the flexibility and practicality to design free of constraint. It’s an absolute joy to work with. What’s hot in bedroom design? CLAIRE I think people have cluttered lives so simplicity will be the order of the day. Women want everything out of sight but accessible. Men have different priorities I think.

“We want people to feel good when they walk into a bedroom that we’ve created - we want it to lift their soul. Beautiful things have that effect.” ❧ 26 ❧

STEVE Absolutely. I believe that applies to kitchens and living spaces too. This is the iPad age and I believe the integration of technology and aesthetics is becoming more important to people. For me, as a designer, the art is making sure that all of these elements are considered at the beginning of the design process. We take great care to discuss clients’ lifestyles with them; what they want from the end product, and will it meet their needs? CLAIRE Ultimately, we want everything that we create to look beautiful and this new Italian range is functional as well as being simply gorgeous!

“Feel the love that’s gone into the manufacturing.” ❧ 27 ❧

It was a mammoth task, but in order to build on the customer focussed ideals this family-run business adopted all those years ago, it was essential in securing a long-term future. Being a local independent retailer, competing against large multi-nationals, a new website has been created. This is not a typical online shop, however, as it has never been in the company’s plans to utilise this type of price-led, off-theshelf approach. Whilst they compete with any company on price, it is the design aspect that is really at the heart of what they are about. Keith Ryall, Managing Director commented‚ “We felt that in order to compete with the big national suppliers, it was vital to get across our own unique selling points so that customers could make an informed choice.”

We are also able to help the customer decide that what looks great in the showroom, will also look great in their home through our 3D visuals, this really makes sure the customer gets exactly what they want, at a price they can afford.”

This attitude has always been at the heart of what Cardiff Bathroom Centre believes in. Their own in-house designers replace conventional salespeople and this design-led approach ensures customers get the bathroom of their dreams. Anthony Ryall said, “We take the time and effort to really get to know the customer and this ensures they get the advice and ideas needed to create a bathroom that is both stunning and functional.

Beauty Angel at the Tan Studio, Bridgend is an amazing new light technology treatment which promises to reduce fine lines. Here, Michelle Harris of the popular hair salon, Mint in Porthcawl, shares with us her experience of the treatment.

TRIED & TESTED

First, the science bit... The Beauty Angel Red Light Collagen Treatment utilises amazing new light technology to reduce fine lines and make skin visibly more taut and smoother.

What immediate difference did the Beauty Angel make? I noticed after the first few treatments that my skin felt and looked refreshed and a lot healthier. My pores were also a lot finer. Overall, I’m very impressed.

There are no nasty ultra- violet rays involved here as the special light is absorbed by the skin’s cells and stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. With no harmful side effects, the Beauty Angel is truly heaven sent.

Are the effects of the treatment ongoing? What’s the condition of your skin like now? Since having to stop the treatments, I’ve noticed that, whilst my skin looks better than it was, my combination skin has started to return. Now that my move is nearly over, I’ve already booked my next course and I can’t wait to get that refreshed look back again.

Michelle, what condition was your skin in before the treatment? I’ve always had combination skin, parts of it are oily and parts are dry. In total, how many treatments did you have? Right now, I’m half way through my treatments. Moving house has meant that I had to take a break in between.

Would you recommend the Beauty Angel treatment to your friends and colleagues? A few of my friends and customers have noticed the difference already so, yes, I have already passed it on and I’m sure they’ll be just as impressed! ❧ 30 ❧

CARDIFF

Upgrade your smile with Invisalign From teeth whitening to gum reshaping, the new advances in cosmetic dentistry mean we can all get an A-list look for less. We speak to leading dental practitioners Dr Kevin Gracias and Dr Amir Koochek of Cathays Dental in Cardiff about achieving one treatment that can help us get that celebrity smile. Invisalign, one of the new straightening techniques available can be used on teenagers and adults. It offers those who are self-conscious of their teeth a way to straighten them, without the obvious aesthetics of the brace. In fact Invisalign is barely visible and can be used on a variety of problematic teeth.

“If you’re self conscious about your smile, then the best way to deal with this is by straightening your teeth. Not only can this correct the crookedness, it can also help your teeth become healthier.”

Who does Invisalign work best for? Not everyone is lucky enough to be born with perfect teeth. Some of us have a crooked smile. Some people might think this adds character to the face but, if you’re self conscious about your smile, then the best way to deal with this is by straightening your teeth. Not only can this correct the crookedness, it can also help your teeth become healthier. A problem that we commonly see is that of overcrowding, where there is a lack of room in your jaw for all of your teeth. This can lead to an increased likelihood of you developing gum disease as teeth that are too close together are not as easy to clean, making it more likely that you’ll develop plaque and tartar in the hard to reach areas, which can lead to gingivitis and gum disease. Another common issue is widely spaced teeth, where there is too much room in your jaw. Whilst this problem is slightly better than an overcrowded mouth, it can be harmful as it can lead tilting and drifting of teeth, which can affect your bite and can lead to gum problems. Other problems we see include overbite, where the top teeth are too far over the bottom and overjet where the top teeth are too far forward over the bottom. This is mainly due to genetics but can easily be solved with aligners or braces. If left untreated, this can cause tooth wear, irritable gums and increased risk of damage to the upper teeth. ❧ 32 ❧

Then there is the reverse overjet, where the lower teeth stick out past the front teeth, often causing pain and discomfort as it stops the front teeth from completing their job. Lastly, there’s the cross bite, which occurs when the top and bottom jaws are askew. This can cause facial asymmetry and jaw ache, especially in the jaw joints and can make eating and chewing difficult. What’s the solution to these problems? Invisalign. Just like braces, Invisalign can help solve all of these problems, without being visible to the outside world. Would I be a suitable candidate? To find out if you are suitable for Invisalign, please call for a no obligation assessment. Once we have established if you are a suitable candidate, we can discuss your treatment options. Do you offer payment plans? Cathays Dental offers payment plans to help with the costs of your dental treatment.

If you’ve made the decision to have cosmetic surgery, you’ll need to choose the right surgeon to carry out the procedure. But which one do you choose? Perhaps a surgeon in London, involving lots of travelling? Not necessarily...

What qualifications do you hold? BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, MB BS, MS (Master of Surgery), FRCS, FRCS (Plast). How long have you been with Cosmetic Surgery Partners? I began working with them in 2007. What has it been like working with Mr. Dai Davies? Interesting, instructive, challenging. Working with Dai has been an excellent entrée to the world of aesthetic surgery. What are your specialities? I specialise in aesthetic surgery in general, but I super-specialise in breasts, eyes and face and labiaplasty. Why have you chosen to work specifically in those areas? It’s a combination of professional exposure and experience. In addition, the ability to achieve consistent and high quality results, along with personal satisfaction. Do you ever say no to patients when you think they may not need surgery or if you think that what their expecting is unachievable? Yes, absolutely. Our field of surgery is ‘want’ not ‘need’, so both parties must be entirely satisfied that expectations are not only realistic, but achievable biologically. When is the best time for a woman to consider a facelift and why? There’s no set time age-wise and studies show that greatest patient satisfaction occurs slightly younger (45-55 years) than much older. Whilst rare, there are potential complications that are visible, so risk-benefit balance is important. As with any procedure, in my experience, the unhappiest are those doing it not for themselves, but for others. Which facelift surgeries do you favour and why? The best one for each individual case. There is a lot of ‘puff’ about certain

What do you see as the emerging trends in cosmetic surgery? We have departed from the ‘Jordan, look at me’ result, and find the happiest patients, in general, to be those in whom the surgery is imperceptible to family and friends. I understand that you are going to be working at Celtic Springs in Newport. How did that come about? It’s a slightly long story, but Dai is the connection. I’m delighted to be bringing our skills to Wales. At what age did you know that you wanted to be a surgeon? I know it might sound strange but as a young boy. I just knew it was the thing I wanted to do. Where do you see yourself in the future? Still alive! And with luck, in the position Dai is now. In this profession, we never stop learning. It’s a wonderful job and the results are very satisfying.

The Men’s International range expands from Barbour’s motor cycling heritage, updating and innovating resilient designs while the Heritage collections are inspired by the company’s history in warming and weatherproof clothing.

New styles mingle with favourite pieces in the winter Lifestyle collection. Fits are feminine and flattering, while details are practical and ingenious, inspired by motorcycling, military or country pursuits. So there we all were, fantastic clothes, bags and shoes, beautiful models, gorgeous venue - then it was lights, camera, action! Over to Paul Cornish of CWC Imagery for his take on the day.

LIFE COVER Shot on location at Pier 64, Penarth. A big thank you to Joanne and Francis for the use of their gorgeous restaurant. All clothings, bags and shoes by The Queen B, Penarth A big thanks to Phillipa Moss-Vernon, stylist at The Queen B, Alexis, Hayley, Stephanie of Blu Hair Design, Lawrence of Glo Hair Design, Victoria Valentine, Make-Up Artist, and our models Jodie, Gabby, Erian and Charlotte.

When Jen and Mark, the principals behind the Life magazines, asked me to be involved in their cover shoot, I was honoured. The shoot was in conjunction with Blu Hair Design (hair), Victoria Valentine (make-up) The Queen B provided the outfits and the location was Pier 64 on Penarth Marina. I introduced a couple of models into the mix, having worked with Charlotte and Eirian before, I knew they would produce their very best for me, creating the professional look that defines the Life magazines.

When I arrived, all the models, Eirian, Charlotte, new face 15 year old Gabby, and Jodie, owner of The Queen B, had already been through make-up and hair. Phillipa Moss-Vernon, a stylist from The Queen B was on hand to get the girls clothed and having worked on shoots before understood the need for a fast turn around and was brilliant helping with the shoot itself. Pier 64 is a really great location and the weather was kind to us, which meant that we could shoot inside and out. We get to shoot all sorts of things as commercial photographers from lifestyle shoots like this to enhance brand image through to product shots of everything from delectable pies through to pairs of shoes. Our working days are varied and interesting. To stay at the top of this type of photography, we have even designed our own lighting system to give us the edge over our competitors. Whenever my wardrobe needs an injection of the latest season’s clothes, you would think that my first thought would be to head off into the city to the larger stores but you would be wrong.

BRYL’S BOUTIQUE You see, I’ve learnt over the years that I’m much better off shopping locally at an independent boutique.

Why? Well for many reasons. (1) local boutique owners don’t buy a lot of the same stock so you don’t run the fashion gauntlet of bumping into someone wearing the same item as you (2) a local boutique owner knows me, my lifestyle and my personality so is much more equipped to give me the best advice on what suits me and (3) with less overheads to pay for, chances are the prices are more affordable. Bryl’s Boutique in Barry ticks all three boxes. Owner Ann Bryl makes it her business to get to know her customers and their needs so that as soon as you walk in through the door, her mind immediately selects items that will suit you and your lifestyle. She has great fashion sense, buys stock that is on trend and knows will appeal to her clients. Her staff include family members which keeps the overheads down and which is reflected on the prices on the tickets.

Approved by Aston Martin, Bentley and Nissan, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the cream of automotive brands is all you’ll see passing through the body shop and spray booth at Davies Motor Company.

CAR ORIENT With winter on the horizon, owner Sean Davies says this is the time when the classics and customs start to arrive in the workshop. We take a look at one of Davies Motors’ latest projects; a 1976 Toyota Celica GT2000. What’s the story behind this particular car Sean? It’s a 1976 Toyota Celica GT2000 RA28. It’s the first generation of the modern Celica you see driving around today. There were several models similar in style and two liftback coupe models like this the ST2000 had a single overhead cam 2 litre engine but this is the very rare GT which had a twin cam 2 litre plus some other upgrades. No ABS, no driver-assist - It’s really fun to drive. It looks a lot like an old Bullitt style Mustang... Yes, it’s affectionately called the poor man’s Mustang. In the early years, Toyota’s styling was ‘influenced’ a lot by the American market. This model is very similar in style to the Mustang driven in the film Bullitt by Steve McQueen. You do see them in Bullitt Highland green occasionally.

Fans of the RA28 GT will spot the subtle treatment around the front grill. The owner wanted the sidelights removed and replaced with new metal to give a cleaner line from the bonnet into the front bumper. He also wanted a competition style petrol cap so we’ve replaced the standard flip cover with a motorcycle locking fuel cap from a Honda Fireblade motorcycle. We also polished and repainted the wheels and colourcoded the bumpers and calipers.

Not quite the same colour... No, this is a little less subtle. The base colour is the same as when it came in although it has had a full respray. The owner bought it in that colour and, although he has plans to change the colour completely in the future, he wanted one more season in the existing colour. This was very much a restyle and re-spray exercise with some subtle changes to make the car unique.

Tell us about the paintwork... It’s very retro, very seventies and I’m delighted with the end result. I think the customer is already talking to various national and international magazines about having it featured. He has talked about selling it to get into a new project but I think he’s having second thoughts now.

What’s been done exactly? Well, all the wheels and doors came off and the glass was removed. We wanted to make sure it was completely rust-free going forward. We had to be careful as windscreens and rear windows are particularly hard to come by for classic Celicas. The Celica was in great shape but there were some issues with corrosion around the bottom of the front windscreen and the bottom of the tailgate, a known problem area on this particular model, so we’ve completely renewed a section of the tailgate and incorporated a keyless lock which can be opened from the inside by the driver.

Photography by Paul Cornish

What other projects are you working on? By the time your readers will see this, we will have completed a full restoration on an MGB and a classic Jaguar XJ will have had the Davies Motors magic but we work on all sorts - from family saloons to top of the line Aston Martins and Bentleys. Honestly, a good sixty percent of our work is standard stuff; Peugeots, Fords, Citroens, Alfas, Audis, Hondas, BMWs - we fix them all. The very poor weather this summer has kept us busy – lots of rain equals lots of business. We get a lot of the usual bumps and shunts to deal with but we treat every car as if it’s a Porsche, Bentley or Mercedes. Every customer’s car gets the five star treatment - it’s the only way we know how to work. When only bespoke quality will do, Rathkey’s crafstmanship and service may be just the right choice for you.

ONLY BESPOKE City Life spoke with owner Paul Rathkey to find out why customers choose him and what it is that makes Rathkey’s kitchens so special. Paul, what’s your role in Rathkey’s? I manage and organise a team of staff and ensure the safe and creative crafting of bespoke furniture to the client’s requirement. I meet clients at their homes or premises and discuss in detail what their options are and put forward ideas. Where did you train? Rycotewood College, where I gained a diploma in Furniture & Design. I was then head hunted by David Linley Furniture, the owner, of which is Viscount Linley, the Queen’s nephew, and I worked there for the next ten years making fine bespoke furniture for some very rich and famous people.

Describe your typical day From the moment I arrive in work, at 8am most days, I begin by answering phonecalls and meet with the team to ensure they all have enough work to keep themselves busy through the day. I also have to make sure that all orders for materials are placed in plenty of time so that we have the correct stock and materials to complete the jobs we have. In between all of this I visit clients to discuss projects and, back on site, answer any enquiries and liaise with the team regarding any technical issues that may arise. Do you see any trends developing? Recently, the call for contemporary furniture as opposed to traditional furniture has been in higher demand, working with more oak and walnut furniture. A large proportion of our work is for bespoke kitchens in natural timber or hand-painted finishes. ❧ 48 ❧

Do you enjoy your job? I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products. I love the feel of the timber when the furniture is completed and enjoy seeing the faces of satisfied customers, many of whom have become firm friends. How do you get most of your work? We are pleased to say that we have had regular work and are very lucky that clients have highly recommended us to new potential customers, even allowing us to show clients their houses and the quality of work we produce. What are your future plans? To continue to give an excellent service to our clients.

“I was head hunted by David Linley.”

Gauci Candles’ new range is a capital idea Cardiff’s very own organic candle maker is developing its extremely popular Cardiff range. Inspired by the people and places in Wales’ capital city, the new names are already proving popular with Gauci Candle fans. With names like Fairwater Fresh Linen, Grangetown Grapes, Lemongrass Of Lakeside and Sandalwood of Splott, owner and

candle maker Mr G hopes the company’s new creations will be embraced by organic candle lovers around Cardiff. “We use only the best grade organic soy wax in our handmade candles and we ensure every stage of the process is 100% ecofriendly.” So if you fancy Rosemary Of Rhiwbina, Penarth Sea Breeze or my personal favourite – St Fagans Fresh bread, just give Mr G (Gauci’s candle guru) a call. Pallet Truck Solutions gives Cardiff a lift New Welsh company, Pallet Truck Solutions, is aiming to make a big impression in the manual handling market across the UK. The company has launched its new website which features hundreds of products; from pallet trucks to Lift Tables and Tow Tractors to storage solutions. “We’ve been in the engineering industry for many years and understand what kind of equipment businesses need to ensure the safe movement and handling of heavy and awkward items,” said Director, Rhys Evans.

Pallet Truck Solutions will be expanding their range of products over the next twelve months and also offer a pallet truck repair service in the CF postcode area. “Over recent years, there have been a lot of cheap and, quite frankly, badly engineered products flooding into the UK. These inferior products are poorly engineered and cheaply manufactured and, at best, fail after a few months but, more worryingly, can fail around workers when they are carrying significant weight,” added Rhys. “At Pallet Truck Solutions we choose our products carefully and offer our customers a one year replacement guarantee.” ❧ 51 ❧

THE BENEFITS ■ Releases and increases office space ■ Supports disaster recovery plans ■ Convenient retrieval 100 yards from your office suite ■ Records stored off-site ■ Flexible terms ■ Easy in-out access

Are you finding space for staff increasingly hard to come by? Are you fed up of being surrounded by stored paperwork or archive records?

OFFICE SOLUTIONS Businesses everywhere are trying to reduce their overheads so it makes no sense at all paying for space that is simply a warm home for archive files or documents your business is either legally obliged to keep or you need to refer to occasionally. James Mason, Centre Manager at The Business Centre in Barry, talks to us about a new service that will help businesses to save more money and free up space.

How far is the document storage away from the office suites and how flexible is the access? The storage space at Space Centre is a mere three minute walk from The Business Centre where all our flexible serviced office suites are situated. In terms of access, The Business Centre can provide 24 hour access to all office suite clients with 5 days a week (8am to 5.30pm) access for archive storage at Space Centre.

Why did you launch this service? We understand the need to utilise every inch of office space to generate profit. Businesses need space for employees more than they do for records and archives. It’s actually nothing new, we’ve been offering the service to tenants since day one, we just haven’t been shouting about it. How does the service work? The Business Centre can provide flexible serviced office space with established archive and document storage at another of our companies, Space Centre, which is just opposite us on the estate. We can provide archive storage solutions that provide clients with an efficient and safe way of storing and retrieving data or records quickly and accurately with flexible terms.

“Businesses need space for employees more than they do for records and archives.” ❧ 52 ❧

Will my documents and files be totally secure and confidential? Archive and document storage at Space Centre is totally secure within single, lockable rooms which include rack space. We ensure that all documents are kept completely confidential within your designated space. What is the shortest agreement you provide for the archive storage and office suites and will cancellation notice need to be given? The archive storage and office suites are provided on a minimum three month agreement and just one month notice is needed to end the agreement. We believe that in the challenging economic climate, flexibility is the key for businesses to operate successfully without long term commitments. How important is your location? We are conveniently located on the eastern outskirts of Barry; ideal for companies who operate in the Vale or want easy access to Cardiff without the hassle and inconvenience of a daily commute and costly parking.

For businesses starting up who want to fix their costs and to maximise the profitability of their business space, we offer a range of very affordable and convenient solutions. To find out more about the facilities available, please contact Centre Manager James Mason on 01446 739911 or e-mail enquiries@thebusinesscentreonline.co.uk

THE LAST WORD As you’ll see from reading this page, serial entrepreneur Jahan Abedi doesn’t get much free time, so we were lucky to grab five minutes with the man to hear about a day in the life of this dynamic Cardiff businessman. What is your role in the Chameleon Group? I am the owner and the managing director. How do you manage the work/life balance? Not as well as I would like! I work long hours and, with a new baby, it’s difficult to balance my time. I try to take time out in the mornings to spend with my son. I’m lucky to have an understanding wife who puts up with these long hours as we try to improve Cardiff’s dynamics. How stressful is your life? Very. The Potted Pig and Mocka have now become quite well established in Cardiff’s entertainment patterns and the Meating Place and North Star are creating a well deserved place in the heart of the city. I’m also very pleased to say that Crystal has created a well deserved reputation as the boutique bar/club of the city.

All of this needs a polished and dedicated team to give the best service and value that our clients expect. I’m lucky to have partners and managers who are hard working and committed and I enjoy my work because of the team that I am surrounded by. We are in the process of opening more venues and this takes a lot of planning and effort. Given the industry you are in, where do you go to socialise and unwind? Any free time I have I like to spend with my family. My favourite day is Sunday, when I can unwind with my family. My wife is expecting our second child in November so we don’t tend to go out much. What three gadgets could you not live without? My iPhone, Nespresso machine and TV in the mornings for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, which my son loves.

How do you motivate yourself? To try to believe we are making improvements to the dynamics of Cardiff as a city. What’s for breakfast? Tea and quality time with my son! Describe your day I’m very busy at the moment, so I usually start my day in the office sorting through emails and paperwork and then go from meeting to meeting in the afternoon. I also have a building team working on various projects, so I often have to make on-site visits. I try to get home for an evening meal with my wife and son before we put him to bed.
