It’s been another incredible year for Alexander James of Swansea. As the company’s reputation has been growing, primarily, from its many happy customers. Mr and Mrs Lewis of Cowbridge are one of these and are now fully ensconced in their stunning new home. “Our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape.” “Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation.”

Spring in Cardiff is wonderful - with trees full of blossom and daffodils in the parks, there’s nothing quite like this time of year for appreciating Cardiff at its blooming best. Now that the snow is hopefully behind us, we’re looking forward to a little warmth in our bones. Talking about warmth, you can’t get a warmer welcome from the Suzanne Lazim and her talented team at Laserwise, our cover star for this issuu. Laserwise are amazing and you can read all about them on page 8 & 9. Popular restaurateur Giovanni Malacrino graces our pages - the family are celebrating thirty-five years of excellence and have hosted the great and the good over the years.
I’ve posted a few of my favourite things on page 50 - if you’d like to share yours, we’d love to hear from you; your favourite boutique, restaurant, walk - whatever it is, please get in touch. You can join us on Facebook and on twitter. Just visit www.citylifecardiff.co.uk, the links are on there.
If you’re a vegetarian then Crumbs should be on your sat nav. You’ll find this fabulous food haven on page 14. Crumbs is approaching its 50th year so there’s much to celebrate.
Hope you have a lovely spring. We’ll see you again in the summer.
The Gwaelod Inn is on page 24 and we can personally vouch for the quality of food, especially Sunday Lunch. The staff are excellent and it has the feel of a proper country pub. Tell Barbara we sent you.

LaserWise have plenty of accolades to boast about. They are a multi-award winning, independent clinic that has been open since 2015. The clinic has continued to grow over these 3 years and have helped hundreds of people to look and feel good about themselves. City Life spoke to LaserWise’s leading lady, owner and level four trained technician, Suzanne Lazim. Tell us about LaserWise… We are a high-end, aesthetic laser clinic situated on Whitchurch road in Cardiff, which offers a huge range of treatments using our state-of- the-art lasers and equipment. The element of LaserWise that I love is the fact that we are a local, independent business which allows us the freedom, as a company, to give high standards of customer service, as we have complete control over our clients treatment and timescale, therefore, no one will ever feel rushed or pressured. This is something we hear about quite often with larger chains, therefore
we are determined to give our clients the best possible experience. I believe more of us should support our local businesses as this is where we usually receive the best quality and customer satisfaction. This is important to me, and I will support them as much as I can. What makes LaserWise different to other clinics? We pride ourselves on giving the best customer service, as I previously mentioned, but also first class treatments that deliver brilliant results that you will notice. We are proud to have won two prestigious awards - ‘Business of the Year Award 2016’ and ‘Beauty Industry Award Cardiff 2016’. We have invested a lot into our high quality lasers and equipment to give the best results we can possibly achieve. All of our clients are worth it and seeing the change on their face and to their confidence when they leave, makes the work we do so rewarding and worthwhile! 8
We are also registered with the Healthcare Inspectorate of Wales (HIW) who are an independent inspectorate and regulator that ensure the clinic is carrying out every policy and procedure as it should, ensuring client safety. A word of advice - always make sure the laser clinic you decide to go to are registered with them. What makes LaserWise special? We believe the work we do changes lives. Our goal is to help people with any issues they have with their skin, face and body, whether it’s a simple make-over or treating severe sun damaged/aged skin, we want to help. We have seen first-hand the difference our treatments make. The feeling of giving a client the confidence that they deserve is incomparable, it’s what motivates us every day! I also believe people are what makes a company special. Our staff are all fully qualified and highly trained in each service that they provide. We always strive for perfection to alleviate our client’s problems, even if it is

something we cannot offer ourselves, we will always point them in the right direction. Our staff are friendly, sociable and most importantly, caring. It takes a lot for a person to open up about their insecurities to a stranger, and I believe only certain people, specifically with these characteristics, should do this job. We want people to know that we genuinely care and want to help them look and feel their best. What treatments do you offer? We specialise in laser treatments, including hair removal, tattoo removal, pigmentation removal, general skin rejuvenation, vein removal, nail fungus treatment and acne treatment. We also have a wide range of skin treatments such as our Signature Steam Facials, DermaPen (a form of Micro-Needling, Skin Peels, Microdermabrasion with L.E.D Light Therapy, Electrolysis and the hugely popular, celebrity treatment, CACI Non-Surgical Face and Neck Lifting. When Stephanie (Steph) Fitzpatrick and Jonathan (Jon) Fitzpatrick decided to get married in Italy, the dress and the suits had to had to be especially beautiful - the Welsh equivalent of Italian style.
BELLISSIMA! Where do you currently live? We live in Pontcanna. We really love it here.
Jon ushered me around the site trying to get away from the smell and unbeknown to me, to find a more romantic spot. As we were taking some photos, he took out the ring and asked me to marry him. It was amazing as a harpist that was nearby started playing the theme tune from Titanic! He admits he didn’t plan that, it was complete serendipity, but it made it even more memorable and so romantic. Needless to say, I accepted!
How and where did you both meet? We met at work. We were colleagues in a law firm in Cardiff. We were just friends for a few years as we were both in relationships at the time - but once they both ended, we soon realised that what we felt for each other was much more than friendship, and we have been together ever since!
Where did your engagement ring come from? We bought it from David Edwards, Royal Arcade in Cardiff. I spotted it in the window as I was looking for a vintage style ring and it had a gorgeous baguette cut diamond. We went in and, to my surprise, it fitted perfectly and we walked out with it that day.
How did Jon propose? He proposed in Paris in the springtime! It was a complete surprise. He booked the trip to Paris for my birthday in April 2016, and I didn’t know where we were going until we arrived at Cardiff Airport. The following day he suggested visiting the Sacre Coeur in the morning. When we arrived, there were lots of tourists and a very strange smell of manure!
Where and when did you marry? We were married in San Galgano Abbey, Chuisdino (near Siena) in Tuscany on 17th June 2016. We had visited the Abbey and had stayed in the nearby hotel, Borgo Santo Pietro, previously. We had looked at a few hotels in the area where we could host the wedding party, but we fell in love with the Borgo as it is the most magical and romantic hotel imaginable.
Steph is currently studying for her Masters Degree in Management and Leadership, and Jon is a retired solicitor who is currently a co-owner (together with his son Alex and his friend Stuart) of a successful craft beer and bottle shop called Ghost Whale, based in Brixton, London.
10
It was the perfect venue to celebrate our wedding day with all our loved ones. The Abbey itself, where the actual ceremony took place, is a roofless 13th Century Gothic building similar to our own Tintern Abbey but a lot hotter! We had the exclusive use of the hotel for the weekend, and our party of thirty-four consisted of family and friends. We wish we could have invited more guests, but we filled the hotel as it was - although those that couldn’t be with us in Italy did join the celebrations at a wonderful party held at St David’s hotel in Cardiff Bay a week later.
I had two Maids of Honour - my sisterin-law (Michelle) and Jon’s daughter (Caitie). Jon had three Best Men(!) - his son (Alex), his brother (Jim) and one of his best mates (Charlie Stephanakis). Caitie’s boyfriend (Jordan) was the Usher. I was given away by her father (Neil) and her brother (Jamie). What made you choose Hawkes? Jon has been a customer of Hawkes for so long that he can’t remember when he first went to the shop! He feels more of a friend of Russ and the team rather than just a customer.
He gets virtually all his clothes there, as he really appreciates the unique style and quality of the range of clothes and footwear on offer, as well as the awesome professionalism and service of Russell and his colleagues. They will never sell you something just to get a sale, but will ensure that anything that you do buy will make you look and feel your best - and will tailor anything off-the-peg to ensure just that. It’s amazing the confidence boost you can get from wearing the right clothes for the right occasion. Hawkes know that implicitly and take great pride in working with their customers (many of whom have become friends) to achieve that outcome. Hawkes is the beacon of style, often with a witty twist, in Cardiff as far as menswear is concerned. What did Hawkes provide for you? Because of the longstanding nature of our relationship, as customer and friend, Russell made the incredibly generous gesture of supplying Jon with a bespoke tailored suit as a wedding gift. Russell’s gesture was totally unexpected but very typical of him, and very gratefully received. The suit was a beautiful, lightweight blue affair - perfect for Tuscany in June. Hawkes also provided the rest of Jon’s outfit from top to tail.
Hawkes also supplied suits, shirts, ties, belts, socks and shoes for the three Best Men, Usher, Father of the Bride, and brother of the Bride. The groomsmen’ suits were a slightly darker shade of blue compared to Jon’s suit, but they complemented it perfectly. The only item of clothes that we had to supply was our underpants! Even if we say so ourselves, they looked pretty awesome! Even though we were getting married in Italy, the home of fashion, we made a statement - Welshmen do it in style!
“ He proposed in Paris in the springtime!” Who designed your dress? My dress was designed by Laure de Sagazan, Paris. I wanted a relaxed fit as it can be so hot in Italy in June and the setting deserved something simple but beautiful. The dress was a silk crepe empire line gown with a French Lace bodice and was bought from The Mews Bridal Shop in Clifton. My shoes were Charlotte Olympia which I bought from theOutnet.com and my headpiece was a beautiful pearl and copper vine from Modiste Accessories. Caitie wore a beautiful blush tulle dress from Debenhams and Michelle a lace top and blush tulle skirt from BHLDN. 11
Was the process of working with Russell at Hawkes a pleasurable one? It always is! It was a real collaborative affair - Jon and I working together with Russell to design Jon’s suit. We decided on the style, cut and weight of the suit, colour of the cloth, linings, buttons, pockets - everything. We then went on to consider the best shirt (Eton cutaway collar), tie and shoes to complement the outfit. Jon loves the Jeffrey West shoe brand that Hawkes supplies, so it had to be a pair of Jeffrey’s for the day. We then proceeded to choose the groomsmen’ suits and accessories with Russell, aided and abetted by Ross and Huw and the team. The boys were all shod in Jeffrey West shoes too! Did you think of going anywhere else for your suits? Absolutely not! It never crossed Jon’s mind to go anywhere but Hawkes for such a special day. How long did the process take? Given that Jon’s suit was bespoke, the process took seven weeks from the initial consultation to the final fitting. All the groomsmen had to visit the shop to have their suits tailored too and to be kitted out. However, it was an enjoyable process from first to last.
Describe your wedding day. Our wedding day was everything we had hoped it would be - romantic, magical and intimate; a day for everyone we love to share memories and joy. We had booked the exclusive use of the hotel for the weekend, so all our guests arrived by the Friday. The Lions were playing on the Saturday morning of the wedding, so our wedding planner had arranged for a large screen to be put up in the hotel bar for us - and both sets of family and friends gathered round the screen to watch the game to kick off the big day. After that our guests were able to relax around the pool or at the spa as the ceremony took place at 3.30pm at the nearby Abbey. Guests were transported to the Abbey, where we had an open air civil ceremony hosted by the local Mayor, I was serenaded by two classical guitarists down the aisle in the abbey. My dad and my brother walked me down the aisle to meet Jon, with Michelle and Caitie walking in front of us. After the ceremony, we went back to the Borgo for cocktails in the water gardens and then onto the wedding breakfast on the lawn. Everyone sat at one long communal table, Italian style, with the nearby trees strung with fairy lights. It was such a beautiful setting.
The five-course menu was designed in collaboration with Chef Andrea Mattea, a Michelin starred chef based at the hotel, and it was absolutely delicious. We drank local wines and after Jon and the three Best Men had given their speeches (aka abused Jon royally!), and Steph’s dad had performed a surprise serenade of “Stephanie” on his ukulele during his speech; Jon and I led the guests to the hotel lake as dusk fell. There we cut the cake and gave a toast. Then the sky exploded as the guests were treated to stunning and unexpected fireworks display. After that the dancing started. We had an open-air dancefloor covered in fairy lights set up in the bistro area of the hotel, near the pool, where we danced and partied until the early hours. It was a wonderful day in a truly wonderful setting. Where did you go for your honeymoon? We did arrive at the Borgo Santo Pietro on the Monday before the Saturday wedding, and were joined by our close family a couple of days later; so, we had a bit of a communal pre-honeymoon break with our nearest and dearest in Tuscany before we wed. 12
As we were away for our wedding day, we wanted to be able to share our happy day with those of our extended family and friends who’d been unable to join us in Italy, so we held a party at St David’s Hotel back in Cardiff the following Saturday evening. We had a slideshow playing in the party suite with our photographs of the day in Italy. We cut another cake and had our first dance in front of over 150 friends and family. We left for Southern Ireland later that week and hired a secluded, coastal cottage in Ballydehob in West Cork, where we could spend time relaxing, walking and enjoying the beautiful southern Irish countryside. A few days after returning we left again for a five-day break in Wissant, near Calais, France with my mum and dad and my brother and his family (as they live in Los Angeles) to celebrate my parents’ 70th birthdays. In1971 Crumbs, in Cardiff ’s beautiful Morgan Arcade, opened for business. It was the first vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Cardiff and, as it approaches its 50th year is still ‘top of the veggie pops’ in 2018.
CRUMBS!
The flared jeans and Afghans may have faded with time but this vegetarian icon just gets better with age. I have to make a confession here – I generally hate veggie food but Crumbs won me over many years ago (I just love their cheese and potato pie). These days, if I’m in the city centre, I’ll arrange to meet a friend there for breakfast. The Crumbs breakfast is served up to 11.30am, given the customer plenty of time to enjoy a healthy and wholesome fuel stop before hitting the shops. But what to choose? It all looks so good. I could go for a cereal bowl of either brans or mueslis (gluten free option available) served with fresh fruit and yoghurt, but I fancy something a bit more substantial so I could either choose the vegan porridge with mixed fruit and a drizzle of local honey, eggs Florentine, scrambled eggs on toast with spinach or the homemade American-style hash browns topped with fried eggs.
There’s an excellent selection of teas, coffees, soft drinks and choice of freshly squeezed carrot, apple and orange juice to choose from but it was the orange juice served in a cute jam jar that won the day. Crumbs has always been a firm favourite for lunch due to its plentiful, super healthy salad bowls, Mediterranean Falafels, sweet potato pakoras, seeds and olives, homemade quiches, lasagnes and pies (remember my favourite, the cheese and potato). Not forgetting the gluten free and vegan soups, vegetarian curry and chilli. For those just wanting a coffee there’s a to-die-for selection of vegan, gluten free and organic cakes to tempt should your resolve weaken. After the wallets and purses have been sufficiently depleted it’s back to Crumbs for an afternoon tea of home-made scones with clotted cream and jam and a cup of tea, traditional or speciality.
“ Crumbs has always been a firm favourite for lunch... Mediterranean falafels, sweet potato pakoras, seeds and olives, homemade quiches, lasagnes and pies.” 14
Why does the food taste so good at Crumbs? The produce is fresh and locally sourced, so all of the food is full of flavour and goodness. Also no meat is stored on the premises, which, for vegetarians or vegans, is of paramount importance. The restaurant is bigger than it looks from outside too. So if it looks busy inside, take the stairs at the rear to the first floor where you’ll find even more seating space which has a slightly different vibe to downstairs. Don’t just take my word for how good Crumbs is. A quick visit to TripAdvisor will reassure you that this shrine to veggie is a must visit. So maybe I’ll see you at Crumbs on your next shopping trip to Cardiff. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
TESTIMONIALS
What you like and love about Crumbs... “Amazing for vegans!” So maybe I’ll see you at Crumbs on your next shopping trip to Cardiff. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
My sister and I went to Crumbs for lunch after hearing good things about it. We are both vegans and were really impressed with the range of vegan options. We had the spiced chickpea and spinach pie with salad and hummus - it was amazing! There was also a large selection of vegan cakes, brownies and shortbreads. We had one piece of chocolate cake and one piece of carrot cake - both were delicious. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming. I’ll definitely be going back!
“Great for veggies, vegans and other humans too!” Had a lovely breakfast here yesterday followed by the best vegan cake I’ve ever had - Morello cherry and vanilla! Breakfast section is small but great quality. Lunch looked lovely with vegan and gluten free falafels and a very tasty looking chickpea pie also vegan and GF - also great selection of salads. Make sure you leave room for cake though all vegan and lots of choice!
“Superb curries!” I adore the Farrow & Ball interior. Taste is what sets Crumbs apart. Their curries are so packed full of flavour. I’m not vegetarian but they’re so good, I don’t notice the missing meat. Their soups are to die for too. If I’m shopping in town, Crumbs is my go-to for lunch.

I woke up in a cold sweat. My heart was pounding, my thoughts were racing, and my head was spinning. I had a nightmare, I dreamt that Madame Wax did not exist.
I HAD A BAD DREAM I felt scared, still in that in-between world between sleep and dreaming. I didn’t know what was true and there was only one way to find out for sure. So I rubbed my eyes and braced myself. Hopeful for a dream and scared how I’d cope if it were indeed a reality. A silent countdown began in my mind – there was no turning back. 3 – 2 – 1 GO! Quickly, I lifted the covers, peered under the duvet, and dared myself to look.
Deep down I knew Madame Wax wouldn’t abandon me. It never does.
OMG, the relief was almost too much! I hadn’t transformed into jungle Jess overnight! There was no unsightly overgrowth. No stubble or ingrowing hairs. No untamed bushes. Just the gorgeous, super soft, hair-free skin I’d gone to bed with - It had just been a bad dream, Madame Wax did exist and my continued softness was thanks to them, my favourite team of waxologists. With a deep exhale I released the tension I didn’t know I’d been holding. Then I scolded myself for having doubts in the first place.
The girls are always there – even when I have an emergency.
[When is my next appointment!] PS. Start your story with Madame Wax and book in your first appointment with one of our expert waxologists. Book online through our website or download our very own app.
They understand me. They know why I want to feel good in my skin. They get the body confidence that comes from that just waxed ooh la la. It’s why I’ll never step foot inside a generic beauty salon for my waxing. No way! Only highly trained, specialist, waxologists for me. And with that thought I jumped out of bed, glanced in the mirror, knowing I was ready to take on the world!

Translated as ‘foot of the mountain’ (Gwaelod-y-Garth for keen Welsh speakers), the Gwaelod Inn is well positioned on the Taff-Ely Ridgeway Path. The Inn has attracted people from far and wide, and their doors are open to ramblers, cyclists, four-legged friends, families and, of course, their much appreciated regulars.
THE GWAELOD INN
Barbara and Richie Angell took over the popular pub over a decade ago, and it’s been a much-loved family run, independent business ever since. Awards wise, The Gwaelod has cleaned up with plenty of awards to its name (CAMRA winners in 2011 and 2013, runners-up in 2016 - as well as being selected as having the second best pub views in the country by the Guardian Magazine). Barbara tells us it’s not all about the accolades but more about their customers; be they drinkers, foodies, cyclists, walkers, dog walkers, sports people - all are welcome.
Friendly family service is crucial to a great pub, something the Gwaelod has in abundance, the pub’s ethos is all about getting together and socialising. You may be familiar with the Garth Mountain if you’ve seen the film ‘The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain’ starring Hugh Grant - this was based on the Garth. The pub boasts spectacular views; it’s hard to believe it is only a little eleven-minute train journey from the centre of Cardiff. They have a cosy downstairs bar with a pool table, and this area is family and dog-friendly. 24
The Inn has a great reputation for serving home-cooked pub food. The upstairs restaurant seats sixty and, additionally, can also seat twenty for private dining. The Gwaelod’s team of expert chefs cook with the finest quality fresh produce, delivered daily from local suppliers. They’re open for lunch, dinner and, of course, the ever-popular Sunday roast. The Gwaelod Inn have a five-star food hygiene rating and four-stars from Visit Wales for their B&B accommodation, perfect for business professionals and holidaymakers, walkers, cyclists and, of course, if you’re watching the rugby.
If you’re not already impressed, they also have an on-site brewery called the Violet Cottage Brewery also known as ‘The Brew With A View’, where they brew a selection of beers which are served exclusively in their own bar. Locals tell us the waft of the beer being brewed on a Sunday morning is something to behold. What could be better than popping out for a Sunday stroll, nostrils full of hops and barley, and then popping into the Gwaelod for a tasty Sunday roast, washed down with a local brew? That sounds like bliss to us!
If our picture of the Gwaleod Inn hasn’t already got you on the phone to book a table, then maybe a browse through their TripAdvisor reviews will have you reaching for your phone. They’ve recently been awarded a Certificate Of Excellence, and quite rightly so.

There’s great news for Barry’s High Street! Miss Holmes is moving to larger premises and taken over the old Post Office building. Not only that but she’s devoting the whole of the upstairs to house a full range of gorgeous Cath Kidston products. We caught up with owner Nicola Petersen to find out more.
MISS HOLMES
Congratulation on the move! What will the new shop be offering? Miss Holmes is a boutique gift shop offering a selection of unique jewellery, branded gifts and self- indulgent lifestyle pieces. We’ve been on the High Street since 2009. For those of you who remember 2009, we were in the grip of a recession. Then we hit a double dip the following year, but we are still here and growing strong nine years on! What brands do you stock? We’ve got something here for everyone and to suit every budget. We are lucky enough to be stocking award-winning jewellery Annie Haak (which features in You & Your Wedding and Hello Magazine). We also stock Qudo, an interchangeable and stacking affordable jewellery brand, bursting with colour, made with Swarovski crystals. These items are selected for their individuality and personal combinations and can be bought from as little as £20.
Joma Jewellery truly makes a great gift from just £15. We house a large selection of rhodium plated bracelets to suit all occasions, including wedding, birthday, baby shower, anniversary and more. Also, Joma has introduced A Little Joma girls range - just like mums. They start from age three and are beautifully gift boxed. Katie Loxton Is also another lifestyle brand sourced for their gifting and fashion pieces. The latest clutches, handbags, scarves and candles all come beautifully gift wrapped, ready to gift. As well as a good selection of home fragrances from Ashleigh & Burwood and Woodwick, we also offer beautiful cards and sentiment gifts. How many people make up Miss Holmes? We are now a team of five. Myself, Joanne, or better known as Tinkerbell(!), 26
has been with us for many years and is responsible for visual merchandising. Andrea who has been with us for over a twelve month now, Andrea is front of house and manages all of our customer orders and requests. We have just recruited another two ladies in readiness for our move. Wendy, is on hand to advise and assist most Saturdays and Mica is our in-house ‘Social Media Platform Executive’, Keeping our customers up-to-date on the latest trends, deliveries and promotions. We all work closely assisting one another and run a well-oiled ship. We’re a great team. Tell us about your exciting news. We are beyond excited! Last spring, I received an email from a well-known brand asking if we would collaborate with them. If I’m honest, I thought it was a wind up as it’s not normally the way these things work!
After doing my research, I found this to be correct. An invitation to collaborate with Cath Kidston! After careful consideration, we purchased bigger premises to accommodate the growth of the business and accepted the invitation offered. We are now in the process of renovation and hope to launch in our new premises after the Easter holidays - sometime in April 2018. There’ll be updates on our Facebook page about the exact opening date.
“ We also offer beautiful cards and sentiment gifts.” What do you think will be your top sellers this spring? We expect our brand new panatone colour inspired Qudo gem toppers to be our “must have” fashion accessory they are good enough to eat!
Our new collection of Katie Loxton has exceeded our expectation with new additions for wedding and bridal purchases, baby showers and holiday essentials coming out on top. Not forgetting the collaboration with Cath Kidston; the home of modern vintage which has now widened its market, incorporating additional prints that would appeal to all. What do you think brings customers to Miss Holmes time and time again? Our customers tell us that we offer superb customer service, personal shopping advice and, of course, our gift-wrapping service. Every customer gets five-star service if they’re spending £5 or just browsing. Our stock changes regularly and, of course, our wrapping service. I am fanatical about packaging and presentation and believe it’s a huge part of giving and receiving! 27
“ We are now in the process of renovation and hope to launch in our new premises after the Easter holidays - sometime in April 2018.” And wo betide if we forget to spray your purchase with our signature fragrance! Customers love it! Going the extra mile has always been our USP from day one. Miss Holmes 18 High Street Barry 01446 732456 www.missholmes.co.uk
THE SAUSAGE REVOLUTION
A revolution has arrived - and it’s sausage shaped! The brains behind Hot Diggidy Dog, Simon Llewellyn, has opened a brand-new sausage restaurant and takeaway, offering quality, Welshgrown hotdogs at fast food prices and speed.
Dragons Den contestant Simon came up with the idea for The Sausage Revolution after realising that the high street was crowded with chicken, burgers and pizzas - but no sausages! Customers start by choosing their preferred sausage style - from plain through to Italian, to then selecting their meat type - chicken, beef or lamb, before picking a side dish. Children will also be catered for with chuggets - small chicken sausages, which are essentially Simon’s sausage version of chicken nuggets.
submarine as an engineer, cooking jacket potatoes for his colleagues on HMS Sovereign and HMS Victorious. After discovering that he was soon to become a father, the Cardiff born chef-tobe dedicated himself to self-learning how to cook. Although his pitch to the Den was rejected nine years ago, ironically, he now supplies Peter Jones with his meat infusion sauces. So, what are Simon’s plans for the future? They include evening openings with a bar, a drive-through service in Barry and a restaurant opening in Cardiff before taking over the rest of the UK.
Vegetarians and gluten intolerant diners are also well catered for with several tasty options on offer. Prices range from £2.99 to £3.99 for a hot dog, and visitors can choose whether to sit in or take their food away. There’s even a breakfast hot dog for early birds? In 1983, a small Italian restaurant opened in the centre of Cardiff. It brought a unique slice of Italy to the city centre, with its authentic cuisine and friendly atmosphere.
GIOVANNI’S R ESTAURANTS
35 YEARS OF MAGICAL MOMENTS 35 years later, Giovanni’s Restaurant on the Hayes has gone from Cardiff ’s youngest eatery to Wales’ longest running Italian restaurant. The familyrun establishment is still making dreams come true with every visit. The restaurant’s conception came about following the founder, Giovanni Malacrino’s return from America, where he opened a restaurant in Colts Neck, New Jersey with his good friends Ron and Linda Bird. Despite the success we see today, Giovanni’s on The Hayes’ opening night was a slow one, as Giovanni recalls: “We had one group of customers, the Hurley family. Apart from that, we were pretty empty. The Hurley’s stayed until the restaurant began filling up. Mamma Cynthia was coaxing people to come into the restaurant. They were wonderfully caring. To this day, I am extremely grateful for them. They are still great friends of ours and I have the photo of their family on the restaurant’s wall.” Following its opening night, the restaurant flourished. Giovanni’s on The Hayes became synonymous with fresh, authentic food. The vegetables and herbs were often picked from Giovanni’s father Domenico’s garden. People adored the charming atmosphere, which could lift even the lowest of moods. It soon became the ultimate destination for A-list celebrities visiting Cardiff. It welcomed the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras, as well as the Welsh treasures, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey and Sir Anthony Hopkins. After years of hosting to big names, Giovanni’s on the Hayes was subject to a new kind of celebrity visit. The hit BBC drama, Sherlock, sought out the restaurant as a filming location. The actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Lars Mikkelsen performed a major scene in the restaurant. Thousands of Cardiff residents flocked to Giovanni’s on the Hayes catch a glimpse of the filming.
As well as establishing and running a popular restaurant, Giovanni pioneered the first ever purpose-built Cafe Quarter in the UK. The al fresco dining area on Mill Lane was designed and spearheaded by Giovanni 25 years ago. “We hit tough times when they redeveloped the Hayes but thank god we got through it. It was all thanks to the support of so many people including Colin Murfit and Martyn Ward.” After owning a string of nightclubs including the infamous no.10, Giovanni opened a new restaurant, on Park Place in 2013. The plush new restaurant mirrored the authenticity of the Hayes, whilst establishing itself as a haven of sophistication. Giovanni’s in Park Place’s ability to cater for large parties and weddings ensures guests’ magical memories are not compromised. Giovanni’s in Park Place is also the first autistic friendly restaurant in the UK. 30
Giovanni’s Restaurant Group has always made it its mission to give back to the community. For years, it has been the official restaurant of feeding the Cardiff Street Pastors, as Giovanni said: “Each night the Pastors are on shift, my staff will prepare and serve hot meals to the hardworking volunteers. It’s important to help the people who help others.” Giovanni has also taken his experiences as a successful serial entrepreneur and used them to guide others. His life coaching career has seen him work with celebrities, famous sports stars and fellow entrepreneurs. His favourite saying is: “I don’t know how but I know I will.” The last year has been a major one for Giovanni’s Restaurant Group, who have won many prestigious awards. The team came first in the Best Multiple Operator category at the Welsh Italian Awards 2017 beating major restaurant chains.
The restaurant group was also named as one of the top 100 most influential small companies in the UK. This achievement saw Giovanni invited to 10 Downing Street, where he received special recognition for his passion towards local companies. Giovanni has been the man behind the magic, building a much-loved establishment. Currently, the entrepreneur is taking on a whole new, wild adventure. Giovanni, along with his good friend Stefano, built and runs a small petting zoo in his garden and is currently looking for a farm or pub with land to expand it. The facility was purpose built for young people with learning difficulties to enjoy and explore with their loved ones. He has gone from running nightclubs to an animal sanctuary. As Giovanni looks to the future, he says: “If you think the last 35 years have been exciting, you have seen nothing yet. We are working on so many exciting projects.
I have a book coming out with Stephen Truelove called The Therapy of Cooking. I’m also working on my own TV shows, first on YouTube and then… watch out. Giovanni and his much-loved sister, Francesca, who has always been his backbone and often known as the Mamma, will be appearing on hit TV shows Come Dine With Me, Bargain Hunt and many more. Giovanni goes on to say: “We are also looking to open a new restaurant soon, so watch this space.” Besides his family, staff and customers, Giovanni owes his success to one thing: Gratitude.

The award winning Real Ale Trail is coming to the Vale of Glamorgan!
THE R EAL A LE TRAIL On the 21st of April 2018 the bus based Real Ale Trail is making its way through Cardiff and the surrounding areas. After proving to be a huge hit in North Wales, the trail has made its way South to help you unearth some very interesting pubs with more than 30 delectable ales for you to try and enjoy. Did you know that here in The Vale of Glamorgan, we have a wealth of businesses that are still family-run to this day? Family-run businesses are so important to our local community, which is why we were really interested in the story behind the Masons Group - a Vale of Glamorgan family that have been trading across the Vale, throughout the UK and overseas with Masons Moving Group, since 1905.
MOVE & STORE We were delighted to have the chance to sit down with James Mason, a fourth generation Mason to join the business, about what the future holds for Masons!
Hi James, we understand that there have been some interesting and innovative changes at Masons, please tell us more… It is such an exciting time at the Masons Group in general. After ten years working at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd, which we opened in 2008, when the concept of serviced office space was still relatively unique in the Vale, I have moved across to the Masons Self Storage team to manage a massive refurbishment project. Summer 2016 saw the re-launch of Masons Self Storage’s brand new 24/7, state-of-the-art facility, and the demand for this type of quality, flexible storage has been so great that we have had to expand! That all sounds really exciting, so what’s involved in your expansion project? We’re always aiming to be at the top of our field, which is why we’re thrilled that the Masons Group were able to invest £1.2 million into Masons Self Storage! We chose to undertake the expansion project as a response to huge customer demand. This means that we will have an additional 215 units, in a greater range of sizes, plus we will be expanding our Mobile Self Storage services and introducing a new Business Zone, with complimentary WIFI. So there will be a dedicated area for customers to work and relax with access to WiFi? Absolutely! Our new Business Zone offers our customers a fantastic new space, with an even wider range of facilities than ever before including charging stations, a refreshments area
as well as space to work and relax and WiFi is free for all customers to use; a new and unique space to ‘Work, Rest and Store’ at the heart of the Vale. Mobile Storage sounds pretty cool, tell us more about this. Mobile Storage is a unique service that brings a storage vault directly to your door, saving you the hassle and cost of hiring a van or man with a van. 10% of the newly expanded facility will be specifically dedicated to our Mobile Storage offer. I forgot to mention that we also have a packaging supplies shop at the Storage Centre for all packing requirements such as moving boxes, bubble wrap and more. A delivery option is also available. What is the split between domestic and business customers? Actually, half and half, people need 34
self storage for so many different reasons; from home renovation to more personal matters such as break up of relationships. We have also seen a huge growth in business customers with demand from start ups, online traders and professional services. Our new Business Zone will make life much easier for these customers. Where do your customers usually come from? Due to our central location at the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, only 5 miles from Penarth and easily reached from the Wenvoe link road, the Storage Centre attracts customers from all over the Vale, and as far as the West of Cardiff due to it’s ease of access and free parking. Do you have sizes to suit different budgets and requirements? Yes, here at Masons Self Storage, our service is entirely tailor-made and flexible according to our customers needs.

Paul Ingram - Rhoose Business storage customer So glad I chose Masons Storage to help with my de-cluttering. The staff are really helpful - 24hr access is great for the hours I work. We have a number of storage solutions to suit different budgets and situations, for example, our Mobile Self Storage options or for those looking for a more traditional self storage option, we currently have a range of storage units ranging in size from 12 sq ft up to 1,000 sq ft! When will the project be complete? It’s well underway and we are on track to complete in April 2018 and with several new customers already booking units. You obviously have your hands full over the coming months, so who will be taking care of the other businesses? John Walsh, the Self Storage Centre Manager, who has been working with us for three years, will continue to ensure that the Storage Centre runs smoothly as well as taking care of all of our customers.
Emma Mason will be stepping up to the challenging, but endlessly rewarding role of Centre Manager at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd in my place! The three main Directors Gordon, Brett and Richard Mason are still at the helm of the three businesses, and myself and Emma, with Warren and Daniel (both at Masons Moving Group), making up the fourth generations of Masons to join our family enterprise. And recently, the Directors’ sister, Sarah, has been onboard helping us with marketing and looking after the websites. It’s great to have so many different skills in one family.

… the story so far Humble beginnings…
The start of the group
Expansion begins…
The KD Group Head Office is a sight to behold. What would initially seem as an impressive house on a semi-busy road, transforms into an Aladdin’s cave for any property enthusiast once you enter.
You see, the KD Group Started with just one company, KD Designs, when Creative Director, Karen, started the company from her kitchen, after her 3 children were old enough to look after themselves.
The immaculately designed house, serves a dual purpose of both show home and habitat. As you walk through the living spaces, the creative juices start flowing and the group’s passion for property hits home.
Karen had recently graduated from design college and wanted to combine her passion for interior design and her aptitude for business – thus KD Designs was born.
10 years in to KD Design’s journey, Jeff Davies sold his previous businesses in the plant hire and construction industry to expand the operations of his wife’s already successful company. The vision was to begin a Property Development arm of the group where properties were bought, renovated and then sold with Jeff project managing and funding the operation, and Karen employing her 10 years’ experience in the interior design business.
You’re led up the stairs to an extension of the original house where fabrics, furniture and light fittings (amongst other Knick Knacks) are combined with a large design studio to serve all the KD Groups operations. This is where husband and wife duo, Jeff and Karen Davies, ply their trade and create all manner of property solutions, be it from Interior Design for both commercial and residential customers, to managing their own property empire.
KD Designs have always had one mission – to deliver a comprehensive interior design service; identifying the specific needs of the customer whilst creating space that is memorable yet functional. That mission still rings true today and after 16 years of service, the company boasts clients from hotels to client homes and everything in between. KD Designs manages the design of a property, the supply and fitting of all goods and services pertinent to the job, as well as project managing the whole effort. They work on the basis that you can give them the keys, leave them to work their magic and come back when all is completed.
KD Developments began trading in 2010 with the purchase of a rundown terrace house in the Group’s home town in South Wales. A 6-month project began of complete renovation, including structural and aesthetic re-design, calling upon the tradesmen that Karen had built relationships with over the past 10 years. Once completed, the property sold within days due to the unique look that had become synonymous with the Group’s take on architectural and interior design. A portfolio of properties followed and more than 20 developments have now been completed.
Holiday Lettings With both KD Developments and KD Designs performing well, another subsidiary emerged. Jeff and Karen have strong links to Saundersfoot in West Wales - they first met in 1975 in The Cambrian Hotel and Bar, and have holidayed in the area every year since. Their knowledge of the area, led them to starting KD Holiday Properties, a holiday rental business that now
owns and manages four premium properties in Saundersfoot. The luxurious and elegant properties are all graded 5 stars to the same exacting standards by Visit Wales and the company is part of their Quality Accredited Agency Scheme. Amber Cottage, Oak Tree Lodge, The Hawthorns and Highwood House are luxury self-catering holiday cottages in Saundersfoot located just a 5-minute walk from Saundersfoot’s
Their client testimonials speak for themselves with rave reviews coming back from almost all guests: “A gorgeous house in a stunning setting. Made very good use of the hot tub. Very peaceful and the perfect setting for a holiday with friends.” Burgess Family - Cardiff
“Thank you for a fab stay at Amber Cottage, we will definitely be coming back. Beautiful property and a great location.” Harris, Morris and Jones Family – Maesteg
“Yet again we’ve had a lovely stay here at Amber Cottage. This is the fourth time we’ve stayed and we’ve had such beautiful weather and enjoyed outside on loungers taking in the beautiful views. Can’t wait to return.” The Howells Family - Bridgend
award winning beach and picturesque harbour, from where boat trips around the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast depart daily during the summer months. The Group partnered with Puffin Cottages, (www.puffincottageholidays.co.uk) who manage the booking process for these properties.
With an appetite to grow the Group further, Karen and Jeff are constantly looking for new business and new ventures. If you’re interested in any of the services the KD Group provides – you can find all the information on the website at: www.karendaviesinteriors.com or www.kdholidayproperties.co.uk.
A lover of fashion, 21-year-old Oxford Brookes university student and designer, Gabrielle Harding, from Sully, wanted to put together a sportsline that can be worn to the gym, for a coffee and to university. Karlski is a brand that offers a different take on sportswear. It’s on-trend, and is so comfy and easy to wear.
T
he brand offers a range of items including ones that are custom fit. There’s also a swimwear range offering pieces to fit every shape and size. To match each type of bikini, there are also a range of kimonos making Karlski a one-stopshop for gymwear and beachwear. The name Karlski came from a very personal experience. Gabby had an older brother, Karl, who was a professional water skier and, whilst training for the world championship on Lake Mead in Las Vegas, he had an accident and passed away. The brand name is to commemorate Karl.
There’s nothing worse than going somewhere and seeing the same item on as someone else,” she adds.
But there’s so much more to Karlski than just a sports and swimwear brand. “The sportswear is about being fashionable and fit. I don’t always wear my gymwear to the gym. I often wear it out because it’s not your typical sporty look. It’s a fashionable look and I love that, and I think a lot of other people do too,” says Gabby.
Gabby has ensured that the quality of all pieces is of a high standard - especially the leggings. In fact, Gabby wears everything in her range as she loves the quality and fit. When it came to the bikinis, Gabby went for a range of styles from swimsuits to little bikinis, so that every woman has an option to buy Karlski - whatever their size or shape.
“The jumpers and bombers are exclusives, so you’re not going to see other people walking down the street with the same item on as you.
“ The quality of all pieces is of a high standard.” Gabby’s favourite pieces from her collection? The bomber jacket, because there’s nothing out there like it. She loves the lining, the hood and just the way it sits. She also wears the plain black leggings all the time because they’re so comfy and such good quality. Oh and a cap for those non-washed hair days. Gabby will soon be appearing on our screens in a BBC documentary which will showcase her popular fashion blog.
Filming began in May and then throughout the summer. The show will also focus on the launch party which took place in July at Gabby’s parents’ gorgeous home in Sully. The show aired on BBC Wales at the end of February and on the 2nd, 9th and 16th March. Gabby recently met a few new suppliers, has also been working on her swimwear collection and has designed all of the new kimonos ready for summer. She’s also currently sourcing new bikinis for the new season and looking to add more pieces to the collection. If you want to stand out from the crowd in your gymwear or just want to look bang on trend, then Karlski needs to be in your favourites.

April 2018 sees the launch of Spiritual Spa in the coastal town of Llantwit Major and a warm welcome extended to new, and existing clients from 54-year-old founder, Helen Wingstedt.
SPIRITUAL SPA What is your background? I’ve studied the physical and non-physical aspects and attributes of people since I was a child; motivated by a need to understand my intuitive abilities, make the most of myself and a love of seeing others do well. In 2006, conventional study and qualification formed the bedrock for twelve years training in native American wellness practice; an opportunity few are offered and even fewer complete. Providing fresh perspective on common problems it’s an approach that makes a massive difference in terms of results, permanency and the speed at which results are achieved. What services do you offer? Spiritual Spa services restore confidence because confidence is the key to health, happiness and success. Helping people understand when and why confidence has been lost triggers a mental, emotional, psychological and perceptual ‘rebooting’ process that moves them closer to who they really are. As a result of this non-physical i.e. ‘spiritual’ shift, many issues of health and difficulty fade away, behaviour alters and performance improves.
Because changes are the result of a reboot they last indefinitely. What type of clients do you work with? I work with people and organisations who are serious about recovery, improvement and achievement be it for personal, professional or corporate reasons. It’s not an approach that modern people are aware of or used to but once they become aware of it and see what’s possible they never go back. Do you get results? Clients normally enjoy far more positive change than anticipated because native American practice is solution focused. Modern people expect short term relief, sticking plaster therapies and ‘gap’ based interventions such as coaching because they’re unaware that a long-term solution to their difficulties exists. I have a 100% improvement track record and I aim to keep it that way!
“ Although Spiritual Spa services are new to most people, in native American culture they are routinely practised and widely recognised as the fastest and most effective way of achieving long lasting change.” Helen Wingstedt Wellness Specialist SPIRITUAL SPA 6 Church Street, Llantwit Major CF61 1SB 0345 450 4481 07766 444512

Jakub Wiatr, Hearing Health Specialist at Malmo Hearing, along with Patrycja Szczesniak, Office Manager, recently attended the bi-annual Hearing Expo 2018, hosted by Starkey Technologies, in Las Vegas. We caught up with Jakub to find out more.
M ALMO HEARING
Jakub and Patrycja with the owner of Starkey Hearing technologies William Austin
Who are Starkey Technologies? They are the world’s only independent hearing aid manufacturers. Formed by owner and president, Mr Bill Austin, they never stop working on new and innovative ways to improve the quality of lives for hearing impaired people. How was the event? We travelled to the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Las Vegas, in January, as two of over 4000 delegates at the Starkey Hearing Expo 2018. The exhibition was mainly to educate and inspire delegates to help them improve their service and products to help more hearing- impaired people, providing them with more choice and solutions to assist customers worldwide. The two new products are the rechargeable Muse IQ and the Custom Invisible Soundlens iQ. What else has Malmo got planned in 2018? We have just entered into a partnership with Sonja Jones, owner of Cardiff Hearing Ltd, based in Llandaff and Cathedral Road, Cardiff. Sonja will work with Malmo under license at our branches in Bridgend and Newport.
Patrycja with the new iQ rechargeable hearing systems
The partnership also means that Malmo, through Sonja, can offer existing and new clients a clinic option in Cardiff. Sonja will also bring her expertise, in particular, solutions for those suffering from tinnitus issues, as we aim to develop a tinnitus service we can offer to all our clients from April 2018. Starkey Hearing Foundation In our last issue, we highlighted Jakub’s work in Armenia with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, where Jakub attended a week-long event in Yerevan, Armenia, to help fit hearing aids on behalf of the foundation to over 2,000 people.
“ We aim to develop a tinnitus service we can offer to all our clients from April 2018.” Jakub has been invited back to follow up this mission from 2017. Jakub will be travelling out again in May. We will update all on this event in the summer edition of Vale Life and City Life, but you can find out more at www.starkeyhearingfoundation.org 45

Reflect before you take legal action says leading Cardiff family law firm, Robertsons Solicitors.
TIME TO R EFLECT
ROBERTSONS SOLICITORS
The first quarter of the year usually sees a spike in the desire to begin separation and divorce proceedings. Chris Barber from Robertsons Solicitors tells us why we should stop and take a breath before we begin legal proceedings. Obtaining a divorce can be an expensive process. January 8th was branded ‘national divorce day’ by the legal profession as it was the day that the highest number of separation and divorce applications were expected to be filed for. Many legal firms would rub their hands in glee at this prospect, but Cardiff family law firm Robertsons Solicitors, believes that before proceedings begin, each party should stop, take stock, and reflect before any action is taken. “Often, when proceedings start early in the new year, it’s because December can be something of an emotional pressure cooker,” said Litigation Lawyer Chris Barber.
“There are many cases where divorce is the right course of action. However, we often have cases in which the commencement of divorce proceedings is directly as a result of the extraordinary circumstances of the festive season. Often just a few days reflection can ease the situation and allow rational thinking to come back into play.” One of Robertsons’ core business values is service and this is a classic situation that brings it into play. “We never turn cases away, but we do always work with our clients and encourage them to reflect on their situation before any fees are incurred. EVERY MOMENT M ATTERS Talented photographer and videographer Ben Armstrong is quickly making a name for himself in the industry. Capturing the emotion of events, businesses and people, Ben believes that video is a marketing tool that every business can’t afford to ignore. Gower Life chatted to Ben to find out more about his passion for the moving image. How long have you been interested in photography and videography? I have been interested in film and photography most of my life. As a youngster, I use to watch a lot of films and wish I could one day make something that people could watch that would either make them laugh or smile. It’s all about the emotion. What do you enjoy most about your work? I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile or refresh their memory from a time in their life. That’s where my passion lies - being able to meet lots of new people on my journey is an added bonus. What do you think makes your work stand out above others? When I’m working with businesses, I aim to put them at ease so the essence of the business shines through. I think when you watch one of my videos there is a certain style or energy to my work.
It means a lot to me to capture a venue or event correctly so that it ends up either being a wonderful memory for someone, or a superb marketing tool. I like to work closely with the customer to capture their hard work in a fun and energetic way. What does a video cost? The budget starts with time taken filming - then I put the clips together. This is called the editing process. From there I add the music that sometimes needs to be licensed depending on what the client wants. Event coverage with music ranges from £395.00 - £1,500 depending on the length of the shoot, music and editing time. What about weddings? Weddings are usually a full day of filming, with lots of footage to go through. Sometimes I’ll have two people filming (one with the girls and one with the boys). Given the nature of this ‘once in a lifetime’ occasion, we tend to spend more time capturing as many precious moments as possible, so this is reflected in the price. 52
Prices start at £1,500 depending on length of film. I’ve also been asked to travel abroad to cover weddings which I’m happy to do. What type of clients do you work for? I have been very lucky in my career as a videographer to be asked to work for magazines, holiday companies, charities and corporate events such as The Brogue Trader and Maserati. I recently covered Penarth Fashion Week and really enjoyed working with the RNLI on the project.

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.
STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.
VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W
One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.
The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.
THE LIGHT
FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.
Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.
What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.
“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”
Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.
What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.

With our local partners, we currently publish a range of high quality quarterly titles across Wales. You can advertise your business from as little as £35 per season in this magazine. Pick-up-ability! Our magazines aren’t like other magazines. They have real pick-up appeal - in fact, they really do go like hot cakes. Quality comes first... along with the environment. We’re passionate about quality. The magazines are beautifully written and designed, and printed locally in South Wales on high quality paper (and no nasty varnishes or lamination we’re as green as green can be). Quality distribution to an affluent, aspirational audience... We distribute our magazines to over 1,000 carefully selected outlets across South Wales. We’d love to have your business on board. If you’d like to promote your business or service in our magazines, please get in touch, we’d love the opportunity to work with you.
OUR TITLES We proudly publish four Life-style magazines and one business to business title. Vale Life (our first magazine). This covers the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan - the most southerly county in Wales and deemed to be the most affluent. Vale Life was the first magazine we published. City Life The premier lifestyle magazine for Cardiff, Wales’ capital city. The magazine is delivered to all areas of Cardiff. Valleys Life At the heart of the South Wales Valleys. From the Neath Valley in the West to Blaenau Gwent and Pontypool in the East. West Life Covering Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and coastal Ceredigion, West Life is in touch with the relaxed lifestyle of this very special part of Wales. In Business Wales’ premier magazine for people in business. This is the kind of publication people in business want to read; interesting, inspirational and aspirational.
