WELCOME

Hello. Welcome to the super spring edition of your truly local City Life magazine. As you can see, our cover stars for this issue are Gary and Lisa of the Dutch Garden Centre. If you’re remotely interested in gardening, you’ll love this place. It’s a proper gardener’s garden centre. You can read all about it on pages 6 and 7. We visited Rhiwbina this issue and, hopefully, it’ll be a regular visit for us and you. Rhiwbina is known as “the garden of Cardiff” and we’d certainly agree with that. It’s very pretty and we’ve included a few gems that we think you’ll like. Check out the feature on pages 16 and 17. I’ve put together a selection of My Favourite Things on pages 22 and 23. So you should find a few great ideas for gifts or, perhaps a few treats for yourself. Mark has also been busy putting together his selection for Man Cave - so there are a few great ideas there for the man in your life. There are a few familiar faces and features too so plenty to read while enjoying your favourite cuppa. See you in the summer. We hope you have a lovely spring.

One thing we really enjoy doing at City Life is introducing readers to Cardiff ’s hidden gems. The Dutch Garden Centre may be well known to many of you but this brilliant, family owned garden centre for some is still not on your radar.

GOING DUTCH First, let’s dispel a few myths. While it was established by a Dutchman, it doesn’t just sell tulips. No, the Dutch Garden Centre is a proper garden centre - a purists’ garden centre. No chain outlets, no gift shops, no café (there is a coffee machine), no, this is the real deal - a garden centre run by gardeners. Owners Lisa and Gary Jones have taken over the centre after Lisa's father, Jaap Deen (yes, he’s Dutch) retired a year ago. Jaap established the centre over forty years ago and his grandson Sam is the third generation of the family to be involved. Gary, who has 36 years’ experience as a landscape gardener is clearly passionate. “We want the garden centre to be known for its purity as a garden centre. We love giving advice and helping visitors. I think what sets us apart is the personal service we offer.

We’re reasonably priced and, because we’re gardeners ourselves, we’re in tune with what’s in season and popular.” Their enthusiasm, as a couple, is infectious. As we chat away about plants, pots and hanging baskets, you can tell they live, eat and breath horticulture - their knowledge is breath-taking. “Spring is so busy for us,” says Lisa. “We have customers who have been buying hanging baskets from us for over thirty years. Every spring they pop back in they really are like old friends.” Need help with your hedging plants? How about tutoring on tulips? The Dutch Garden Centre believes it is South Wales' largest stockist of trees, shrubs, conifers and hedging and bedding plants as well as being a specialist importer of Dutch and Italian flowering shrubs and bulbs, and locally sourced plants and trees from the UK. 6

The couple add, “We select only the best plants for our customers and have seasonal offers running all year round to ensure you get the best value come rain or shine.” And hundreds of happy, satisfied customers can’t be wrong. Gary is also happy to visit your home or business to recommend what to plant advice, personal service, price, quantities and qualities. “We sell a lot of semi mature trees, hedging, hanging baskets, window boxes, pots, topsoil and turf to the trade and public. There’s not much we don’t do if it’s garden related.” From decorative stones to landscaping sundries and plants this green-fingered couple clearly love what they do. “You know,” says Lisa, “we still get excited about coming to work after all these years. We don’t regret a day.”

“We’re in tune with what’s in season and popular.”

Searching for the right insurance can sometimes be quite overwhelming, time consuming and stressful. Which cover? What price? The variables are quite literally endless!

IWHY NSURANCE USE A BROKER?

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably enticed by the empowering sales messages of comparison or buy-direct websites. I certainly have been for many years. However, a little trip up recently while claiming made me realise that, with my home and car insurance, I’m playing Russian roulette. In this case, it cost me hundreds of pounds, but it could have so easily been thousands. I realised I was having to make decisions I really wasn’t qualified, or knowledgeable enough, to make and getting little help from the person on the other end of the phone (or screen). Products are being sold on a non-advised basis, and what do I know about insurance? So, having “enjoyed” a negative experience, prior to renewal I decided to approach a broker - in this case Watkin Davies based in Whitchurch. I spoke to Gina Dixon, Managing Director, to find out more.

Gina, why do so many of us turn to the internet? Firstly, you can do it in the comfort of your own home at any time of the day. In this day and age, with demands on our time, it is very enticing, and you don’t have to speak to anyone. You are then driven by a sales pitch always price driven. At no time do they mention advice, because mostly they are non-advised sales. Ultimately, what does the customer really know about insurance? You are gambling with your most valuable assets. The purpose of the broker is to ensure the product is suitable for your needs, giving you confidence and comfort that your assets are covered. Usually you have only one of two options: Either, go on-line and deal direct with an insurer where you will be promised the “best price” or speak to a broker to source the most suitable product. The online companies are very enticing – their messages are, for the most part, driven by the idea that you’re going to save money. 10

Is saving money the priority here though? Yes, receiving a competitive price is most important, but we believe getting the right advice is even more important. On-line aggregators are price comparison sites, not driven by advice but by sales, they will regularly push their cheapest quote to the top of their recommended products for you to buy. This may not always be the best option for you. At Watkin Davies, we will always look at ways of reducing the price but not compromising cover and ensure the client fully understands the cover they have purchased. We also commit to reviewing the clients cover each year, this is to ensure the cover is up to date and price is still competitive. What can customers do if they aren’t confident buying insurance online? Enlist a broker. A broker will act with your best interests at heart, acting as a personal advisor for you, ensuring you receive comprehensive cover for a competitive price.

W A T K I N D AV I E S

What customers say… For over 35 years we have enjoyed an excellent business relationship with Watkin Davies, like ourselves they pride themselves on delivering a first class service to their customers. Their ability to react quickly to our business needs, at very competitive prices, has helped us to grasp opportunities quickly and has helped the long term growth and profitability of our company. We view Watkin Davies as a partner to our business not just a supplier. Ron Skinner & Sons Watkin Davies understands our business' needs and has created an insurance programme that reflects this. It allows us to know that in our specialist areas of work, we have the right cover in place, which allows us to focus on our contracts. We feel confident, that if our needs or activity change, Watkin Davies will be able to manage our risk and advise us effectively. LME (UK) Ltd & Atlantic Pacific Marine Ltd Always a great experience- our preferred broker, always very good at getting us the best cover for a competitive price! K. Bell What type of clients do you look after at Watkin Davies? We advise business and private clients with many different needs. Our Private clients require advice and cover ranging from standard residential buildings and contents to high valued home with private collections. This may include second or holiday homes and unoccupied properties.

Are there any other benefits to working directly with you? Advice is crucial in ensuring the client is fully protected, this is not available via an online aggregator.

How does it work? Do I need to visit your office or can it be handled over the phone? Both - if you live local to us you can pop in or just give us a call. A dedicated advisor at Watkin Davies will be able to guide you through the process so that you avoid the risk of underinsurance or no insurance, they will source you the right cover and product to meet your needs. You may need a home visit, clients with art collections or high valued items may need further advice on security, safes etc.

We ensure clients are placed in the hands of a financially secure company. And don’t let’s forget claims, we are there to hold the client’s hand through the process. We often have clients returning to us having had a poor experience with a claim. They know we will assist them and support them if there are any difficult issues.

“Never compromising on cover.”

When dealing with online offers, does the client always know who they are insured with. Often not, they remember the aggregators name.

After my recent experience buying direct, I’d suggest anyone considering insurance talk to a broker. Yes it’s good to look at comparison sites but you don’t want to end up shooting yourself in the foot. 11

Cowbridge is not only known for its fantastic eateries, but it also has an unenviable reputation for great boutiques. One such boutique is Tallia. We caught up with owner Sue Jones to find out why she’s loving the new seasons drop.

TALLIA

Your reputation is certainly building Sue? I’m so grateful that my customers are liking what I’m offering. I’m particularly excited about our spring/summer collections after a busy buying few months. Tell us why? As well as our existing, much-loved brands of Javier Simorra, James Lakeland, Tivoli and Femme; everyday basics of Kaffe, Liverpool jeans, Luella knitwear and Jorli knitwear and, for special occasions, Tia and Apanage. I really look forward to stocking the shelves this time of year. There is such a variety of fabrics from cool cottons to soft silks in beautiful vibrant colours. There are styles for everyone from tailored to comfortable loose-fitting garments to suit any occasion.

“My customers say that we are friendly and helpful.”

There will also be some lovely new brands which I’m really excited to showcase. What about accessories? Our accessories, such as jewellery from Isles & Stars and Zelly and handbags from Zohara and Punch are very popular and really make any outfit complete. Who are your customers? I cater for ages 25 upwards with sizes ranging from 8 to 22. What do you think makes Tallia special? My customers say that we are friendly and helpful and not at all pushy there’s nothing worse! I always try and offer something a little bit different and don’t order too many of the same item - again nothing worse than seeing your outfit on another woman! Most of all, I think it’s our honest feedback that women appreciate. 13

With so many wedding venues to choose from, how would you choose the one that’s unique to you? We asked newlyweds Robert and Kelly Walsh what made them choose the stunning Pencoed House in Cardiff. Robert tells us more.

PENCOED HOUSE ESTATE

Where did you meet? We met Boxing Day 2011 in the Golden Lion pub in Penarth. How long have you been together? We’ve been together for seven years. How and where did Robert propose? I took Kelly on a surprise Christmas market cruise over to Bruges Belgium and proposed on board the ship over evening dinner. It was the weekend of my birthday in December 2015. Why did you choose Pencoed House for your wedding venue? We looked at a few venues and Pencoed House was our favourite. Also our friends got married there and had already decided it was the venue for us. Did you work with a wedding planner there? No, we organised the whole wedding ourselves (with the help of Jamie and Jo). Describe the day? Incredible! From start to finish, it was everything we could have hoped for. The weather was superb. The whole event ran like clockwork, and Jamie was amazing as MC!

How special were you made to feel by the staff at Pencoed House? Very! We cannot say enough about how fantastic they all were.

Would you recommend Pencoed House to anyone thinking of getting married? Absolutely! The place is perfect.

What were the “best bits”? It’s hard to put a finger on it, but if we were to say one thing, it was just how relaxed the whole day went. The evening party and accommodation and morning breakfast were just fab! The food was amazing too!

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Where did you get your dress Kelly? Wed2Be, Llantrisant.

Did you stay at Pencoed House and, if so, what was that like? Yes, we did. We rented the entire place for family and friends (all 26 of them) and all we can say is WOW! Just amazing! Everything was spotlessly clean, modern, and it was fantastic to wake up in such beautiful surroundings with all our family there. Did you use the venue’s caterers, or did you hire your own? Who were they? Out of the three caterers that Pencoed House work with, we chose to go with Cresta Caterers and the food was fab. Did you go on honeymoon? If so, where did you go? We went to Budapest. 14

Where did you get your and your groomsmen’s outfits Robert? I had a custom suit made at Moss Bros in Cardiff I hired suits for the groomsmen there as well. And the rings? Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery in Penarth. What about the cake? Kelly’s cousin made it. Did you have entertainment? If so, what was that? We had a disco and live Motown band.

“Incredible! From start to finish, it was everything we could have hoped for.”

With Mother’s Day in our hearts, we’re celebrating the strong women of the Vale of Glamorgan and the inspiring mothers that we have in our local community; juggling work and family lives, running successful businesses and, all while making time for family. Here we focus on Esme Mason: mother, business owner, pioneer.

GIRL POWER!

The Masons Group are a family run business who have been operating in the Vale for over 100 years. We were very sad to hear about the passing of Esme Mason, Doyenne of the Welsh removals industry and the centre of the Masons Group, just before Christmas. In tribute to her inspiring life, we spoke to the team at Masons to find out more about Esme. It all began with Eric Mason, a RAF veteran, and a second-hand Luton Army Truck in 1905. Today, the group is run by a fourth generation of Masons and spans three different industries: removals and storage, Masons Self Storage and The Business Centre’s serviced and virtual offices. Esme had been working on the busses when she met Eric in the late 1950s and it wasn’t before long that they were married in 1959 in Cardiff! Esme joined Eric working for the family business almost by accident. She was asked by Eric to cover for his secretary in the office one afternoon and she never looked back!

She continued to support Eric and the business whilst raising the children. However, when Eric sadly passed away in 1983, leaving Esme with four children: Gordon, Brett, Sarah and Richard, as well as a business to run, Esme had to take the reins. Her eldest son, Gordon, remembers that when Eric died in 1983, they were faced with a choice: “We either had to shut up shop and walk away, or take it on and make it happen.” They made it happen and Masons Moving Group became Esme’s fifth child! An inspirational woman, Esme was working in a largely male-dominated field at a time when women were expected to be at home looking after the children. Esme retired 53 years later, having helped build Eric’s small business into one of the UK’s leading removals and storage companies.

“Operating in the Vale for over 100 years.” 24

In the 1990s, whilst Esme and by now her three sons were at the height of the Welsh Removals and Storage industry, they saw other business opportunities arise in the Vale and opened the very first self-storage facility which was later rebranded and expanded as Masons Self Storage, a 24/7 state-of-the-art storage facility based on the edge of Barry, just five miles from Penarth. Never standing still, just over ten years ago, Esme and her sons also saw a new trend emerge within the serviced office, meeting space and virtual office market and, in response, built the now highly successful Business Centre just next to the impressive Masons Self Storage Centre. Esme was a pioneer, even though it pained her to lose her husband after twenty-five years of marriage, she was so unbelievably resilient. She discovered a wealth of strengths and skills that had been hidden within her come to the surface and she thrived, becoming the cornerstone of the Masons Moving Group.

Esme spent fifty years perfecting her customer service, many of her staff learned well from listening to her on the telephone as she spoke with both customers and suppliers. Esme has left behind a legacy; the Masons Group are as strong as ever with a fourth generation of Mason currently working their way up the ranks. Along with a strong sense of family, Masons are dedicated to getting involved with the local community, supporting wherever they can. From sponsoring local events like the Billboard Ensemble Christmas Panto 2018 to the sponsorship of Barry Athletic Bowls Club, the Masons Group provide support wherever possible. In particular, one cause that is close to their hearts is Woody’s Lodge. An Armed Forces charity who provide support to veterans and leavers of the Emergency Services, and their families. Masons have been with Woody’s Lodge since their beginnings in 2017.

Sarah, Esme’s daughter, who has recently also joined the Group, discussed the family pride at working with Woody’s Lodge as it commemorates the memory of their father Eric, who served as a pilot in RAF Bomber Command throughout the Second World War. In addition, they have a long history of moving members of the Armed Forces and their families across the UK and Europe. Masons have grown from a small family business into a business at the forefront of their industries with Esme Mason central to its success. With Masons Moving Group, Masons Self Storage and The Business Centre, the Masons Group are able to offer a range of storage and removals services at great value prices on flexible contracts as well as modern serviced offices offering businesses in the Vale a great business community to be part of. You could certainly say that Esme left behind her a legacy to be proud of.

“Esme was a pioneer.” 25

For those who are local to Porthcawl, most will be familiar with Atlantic Hotel on the seafront. For years the staff have been welcoming locals and visitors with hospitality, food and accommodation. During January of this year, the Atlantic Hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment, which brings a fresh, classic and contemporary look to the venue.

GROUP EXECUTIVE CHEF

Alongside the refurbishment, there is a new restaurant, bar and terrace menu with a keen kitchen team to execute tasty dishes. The Atlantic brigade are now headed up by Booth Group Executive Chef, Craig Rigby. Craig oversees and is responsible for the group's menus and the kitchens at other venues, Cae Court Hotel Bridgend and Harbour Bar & Kitchen Porthcawl with new openings in 2019. We had the opportunity to chat with Craig about the various venues and his busy new role. When did you join the company Craig? I joined the company in September 2017 at one of the company’s restaurants, Harbour Bar and Kitchen. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and, with a lot of hard work from all of the team, it is going really well. We have a beautiful restaurant with amazing views, so it makes it a lot easier to enjoy work.

What attracted you to the role? After living in Porthcawl and not having many options at that time to eat out, I felt that it was a fantastic opportunity to bring a totally new bar and food offering to Porthcawl. What is your background? I joined the army at sixteen as an Apprentice Chef and served fourteen years. After leaving the army, I went to work at a local hotel where we were awarded two AA Rosettes. I then moved down to Wales and lived in Penarth. I worked in a couple of different places to try out new things before settling down at my previous job at DeCourceys Manor where I spent six great years. A family run business where everything is made in-house and what I would call proper cooking. I then decided to move to the Harbour for a fresh challenge. I was delighted to be able to bring all of my previous experience and knowledge with me. 28

Congratulations on your new role as Group Executive Chef. How does that make you feel? I am delighted and grateful to Phil and Kate for giving me this opportunity. They have been great - allowing us to try out different ideas and enabling us to do our jobs without too many restrictions. It’s great to have that level of trust. It’s due to their expansion of the Group that I have been able to take on this new role. I must make a special mention to my wife Annie, who puts up with my long hours and evening work. What skills do you think you bring to this new role? I am a good communicator who is willing to listen to what the customer wants. I have no ego. I enjoy teaching people - to enable them to flourish. I am also someone who isn’t afraid to make a decision, even if people don’t always like it.

The qualities I bring are a wealth of experience and knowledge in both fine dining and high volume catering. I really enjoy teaching and mentoring people to be the best they can be; enabling us as a Group to reach the standards we are looking for. What do you hope to achieve in your new role? I am looking forward to us all improving the standards in all the establishments, beginning with the newly refurbished Atlantic Hotel which, in the kitchen, we are taking back to British Classics with a modern twist. The Harbour Kitchen and Bar will have two new Head Chefs, Suzy and Johnny, who will both take on their new roles under my supervision. Cae Court, Bridgend, Phil and Kate’s newest venture, will be fronted by Head Chef Matt who has recently taken up

the position. We are looking to include a Fine Dining Menu there, with a couple of old classics as well. C IT Y L IF E FIN D S O UT MO R E

Quick Fire Questions How old are you? I’m 54. Where do you live? Porthcawl. Relationship status? Married to Annie with three daughters and one beautiful granddaughter. What are your hobbies? My granddaughter Millie takes up most of my spare time and, also, I love my golf at Pyle and Kenfig where I am a member. Describe yourself in three words… Honest, reliable, hard-working. 29

“We love giving back. Whether it’s with clients or with charity, we love sharing success. Yet, every now and then, it’s nice to get something back. Something that shows we’re making a difference, and we have! In front of 3,500 delegates, Lewis Ballard Accountants won the national ‘100% Xero Award’ at Xerocon 2018 in the Excel London.” Janet Ballard

100% X ERO AWARD It was unbelievable to be recognised as national Xero’s champions, out of so many innovative UK firms!

Bigger firms are using Xero, the world’s greatest cloud accounting software, but we’re using it to its fullest. We use it for all our client accounts and to run our practice work flow. We even had a Christmas Tree with Xero decorations on it! Xero is a dominant gene in the DNA of Lewis Ballard. Why is Xero cloud accounting so important? We live in both a digital age and an age of convenience. Xero is arguably the most innovative platform for businesses and individuals to keep on top of their finances. No wonder we love it so much. It makes your life easier and your business stronger. Big claims we know, but it’s true!

“Thrive in the face of digital change.” 38

With our streamlined process, using Xero and its partner apps, you can access your records on the go, anywhere, and on any device. You have real-time, up-to-date information at your fingertips, so we can help you make timely decisions. You’ll find yourself pouncing on opportunities and dodging disasters that your competitors are blissfully unaware of. We’re Building Brilliant Businesses that prosper whatever challenges arise. Neil Ballard says, in relation to the award and the industry as a whole, “Old school, paper-based accountancy firms are just going to disappear.

This award shows we’re not that kind of firm - we’re the firm moving ahead of rapid changes within the industry. Firms that drag their heels, that only make change when forced to, will find that it’s already too late.

Meanwhile, we’re already operating at a digital friendly capacity and our clients won’t struggle as Making Tax Digital happens. We have provided them with the tools to not only survive, but thrive in the face of digital change.”

But, before this, on 23rd March at 7.30pm at Holland House, we’re holding our 10th Annual Charity Dinner for Velindre Cancer Hospital and really hoping to boost the £125,107.90 we’ve already raised for this amazing charity.

However, with the champagne bottles barely dusty, Lewis Ballard are still looking to the future. Ever keen to help businesses succeed, we recognise that up-to-date is only the starting point. We’re currently launching our forecasting tool 4sight as part of our standard service. Your own digital crystal ball, it seamlessly integrates with your figures in Xero. Not only predicting the future, it shows how to change it too.

A very busy few months ahead! Worried about Making Tax Digital? Want help building a future proof business? Need a better payroll solution? Ring 029 2073 5502 or visit www.lewisballard.co.uk now. We’re waiting to help you. Lewis Ballard Celtic House, Caxton Place Pentwyn, Cardiff CF23 8HA

And, as if that’s not enough, in April we’re also launching a streamlined and truly digital Payroll and Auto-Enrolment Service to eliminate the stress for employers and give employees their information right in the palm of their hand.

What geographical area does the business cover? The UK. I have travelled to Blackburn, Edinburgh, Ruthin, and Taunton in the last month, training comms teams for large corporate organisations. I also teach workshops in South Wales for individuals and small businesses. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime? I like watching YouTube documentaries, running along the beautiful coastline and going to comedy clubs and the theatre. Where do you like to eat out? I love the Captains Wife in Sully and Mo’s Indian in Penarth and Toby Carvery in Rhoose. What three words describe you? Courageous, Confident, Creative.

We really love learning about people who live in Cardiff and the Vale. Anna Brees shares her story.

THE L AST WORD How long have you lived here? I have lived here for 8 years. I have lived in the Channel Islands (and Guernsey) Gloucestershire, Birmingham, Oxford, and the New Forest and I have to say this area is my favourite. For the beaches, coastline, shopping, events – comedy clubs, theatre, concerts, parks, and the affordable cost of living. This area on balance has it all! And only two hours on the train to London. What do you do for a living? I had a successful career as broadcast journalist for the BBC and ITV for 11 years, then I moved to South Wales (had children) and recently launched my company Brees Media, passing on professional broadcasting skills to others as we are all now producing and publishing video online. An opportunity arose for me to return to the BBC, but I felt my calling was to empower citizen and community journalists who are already doing sterling work on social along with corporate communications and marketing teams.

What services do the company offer? I teach people how to film, edit and present using their mobile phones – but more importantly how to find the best video vehicle for your message. For example, square and portrait works better on the newsfeed, landscape on YouTube and Vimeo. I also talk about the power of geomarketing using Facebook advertising.

What do you enjoy about what you do? The look on people’s faces following a workshop, it feels like I have just taught them how to write, or speak or sing! It is incredibly rewarding. It is a skill that I feel duty bound to share as a truth seeking journalist, empowering all voices and opinions and I love doing it.

“All I am doing is upskilling those who want to get their message out in a more professional and engaging way via video.” 42

What drives you? It is an exceptionally exciting and transitional time in the media at the moment. All you have to do is follow the money – and in advertising you get more bang for your buck on social. It is taking over from the established media (print and terrestrial TV). All I am doing is upskilling those who want to get their message out in a more professional and engaging way via video. Be a broadcaster and a publisher is my message to everyone. What makes you laugh? I love Vic and Bob, the original Big Night Out and the new one recently launched on BBC 4. I can’t fault Peep Show and Alan Partridge too. I could watch them all day long. What motivates you? My Father. Every single second of the day. He was and still is the most selfless man I ever met and was never motivated by power or money, just compassion and that is what drives me. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Still in this area and helping everyone upskill and adapt to this new and very exciting media environment. Also helping communication and marketing professionals as well as traditional media outlets create channels that compete with terrestrial TV. Anna Brees offers a two day mobile video workshop from her training venue in Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, for more details please email hello@breesmedia.co.uk

Increasingly, the media and government are becoming concerned about our excessive consumption of sugar. Is this something which affects you?

THE WHITE STUFF

Do you need something sweet to kick into action most mornings? Are you reaching for a sugary snack late afternoon? Is a lack of energy affecting your life? - Is your weight becoming an increasing concern? The impact sugar can have on our health is extensive, so how can we avoid falling into the trap of sugar treats? I have devised 7 steps that you can adopt today to balance your blood sugar levels. 1 Aim to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks per day – which consist of mainly complex carbohydrates e.g. beans, lentils, beans, wholegrain, vegetables, nuts, seeds. 2 Drink plenty of filtered water! 3 It’s not always time for tea – replace caffeinated drinks mainly with water and the odd herbal tea. 4 Stop snacking – once you have cut out the caffeine, stick with 3 meals a day, this will sustain you and keep your body balanced.

5 Stop being so simple – avoid refined carbohydrates such as white sugar and refined cereals. Remember, refined foods are simple, simple for our body to convert to fat! 6 Be more green – supermarkets now sell a raft of leafy vegetables which are bursting with vitamins and minerals, which is ideal to aid your health.

Looking for a more tailored plan? As a trained allergy and nutritional therapist, Angharad Evans can offer you a bespoke plan to aid you in adopting a healthier diet. To discuss this further please get in touch: www. angharadevans.cymru, 07739210291 or evansangharad@icloud.com

7 Bring me the protein – to reduce your hunger, increase your intake of protein which can come from sources other than meat, such as eggs, quinoa, beans and salmon, trout, hummus/chickpeas, baked beans. In addition, eat plenty of butternut squash, carrots, swedes, beetroot, sweet potatoes, asparagus, aubergines, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, celery, courgettes, cucumber, fennel, garlic, kale, lettuce, mangetouts, mushrooms, onions.

“Drink plenty of filtered water!” 43

Gauci Organic Candles is a small business with an equally small advertising budget. We have to make every pound count and that’s what we get with Vale Life, City Life and Valleys Life. It’s refreshing to find a magazine that really understands my business. They are never short of ideas. I recommend them whenever I can.” Spiro Gauci, Owner, Gauci Organic Candles, Cardiff www.gaucicandles.co.uk “These are beautiful publications. We love working with people who are passionate about what they do.” Spiro Borg, Spiros Caterers, www.spiros.co.uk We’d love the opportunity to show you what a truly effective campaign in our publications can achieve.
