If it’s been challenging for Cardiff City, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster year so far for Cardiff independent businesses - let’s not pretend it isn’t tough out there. What can you do? Support the good ones, simple as that. For us, despite the economic difficulties, it has been an exciting time. City Life is flourishing and, as we go to print, our little publishing company now publishes three other titles: Vale Life, Valleys Life and our new baby, West Life. All are in the style of City Life and all printed on good quality paper right here in South Wales. We are Cardiff’s only home grown Life style magazine. We’re committed to using local businesses whenever possible and we’re proud that every single issue of our magazines has been designed and printed in South Wales. We do our best to source everything we need from local suppliers even when we’ve had to pay a little more. It’s our commitment to investing locally that we’d like to think sets us apart. Every word in our magazines appears online and our websites are visited by many thousands of people from over one hundred and twenty countries. We also produce digital editions of our publications and they enjoy their own readership. As we go to print the digital editions alone are enjoying close to half a million page views so we’re doing our bit to promote our region way beyond South Wales. It doesn’t take much to make a difference to the local economy. Step away from the supermarket once in a while. Buy your meat from a local butcher, your veg from a greengrocer, visit your local market. That thing you were going to buy online, see if you can source it locally. Apparently, “We Loves The Diff!” Well, the diff, as they say, is you. We can give our local economy a lift by making very small changes in our shopping habits. Be the change, you’ll feel better for it.

Cadwalder’s is still an amazing ice cream emporium but now it’s also a café bar serving meals, snacks and drinks.
Also, at the height of summer, in July, there’ll be two new restaurants opening – luxury French Entrecote and Italian ristorante Zizzi.
All four bedrooms have their own private balconies, accessible through full height, sliding glass doors.
A dedicated entertainment room is situated in a separate section of the structure, which can be reached by a bridge off the main terrace. Inside there is a pool table, games consoles and a plasma TV with Ambient Lighting Technology, which reacts to whatever is showing on the TV.

St Davids Polo Great fun was had by all at this year’s polo event between Wales and South America. Mocka tent was the place to be and was even graced by a few sporting faces throughout the day. Raspberry Mojito’s were the drink of the day along with the odd shot of patrone! Well done Geoff, great day as always!
Kapu The anticipated arrival of Kapu came with an explosion of fire eaters, bongo players and cocktails! My guests and I went along to my good friends Gian Luca and Jay’s fantastic new venue for a taste of Tiki and weren’t disappointed. We were led to the VIP Bamboo Palace which had been reserved for us and given the drinks menu’s which was definitely designed with naughtiness in mind! I absolutely love the venue, it’s so unique and fabulous and a very welcomed addition to the already jumping Mill Lane.
The restaurant/bar offers an innovative menu of grilled dishes during the day with a full coeliac and vegetarian choice and even has a giant 32oz TBone Steak and sharing platters with snacks available late into the night. Celebrities, Joe Calzaghy and Nathan Cleverly called in to sample the wonders of Kapu, including my personal favourite, the ultimate champagne cocktail ‘The Treasure Chest.’ Not something for the faint hearted, it’s an array of top shelf premium spirits, mixed with fresh fruit and juices and topped with a bottle of Moet Chandon served in a huge treasure chest. ❧ 8 ❧
Sir Terry on the Terrace I was very excited when the invite to Celtic Manor’s ‘revamped’ restaurant launch landed on my desk. Myself and my gorgeous friend Kelly Vanner popped along to take a look. The previously named Crown at Celtic has been relaunched as ‘Terry M’ named after the famous pioneer of Welsh business and founder of Celtic Manor Sir Terry Matthews. We gorged on delicious canapés, pink fizz and some great conversation with staff and guests. My highlight of the night had to be Sir Terry’s speech which was so uplifting and inspiring we were completely blown away.

Attic@Soda Soda’s latest addition to the already awesome venue. The girls and I had the best time. The sun was shining on the terrace where we enjoyed some delicious canapés and cocktails. The night took an unexpected celeb-filled turn with the arrival of the fabulous Branning Brothers from Eastenders. I watched from a distance as the guests became very excited - they created a real buzz! I have to say I’m a fan. Beautiful layout, crazy glass dance floor, and gorgeous oversized leather sofas, the Attic boasts a VIP experience like no other and I’m looking forward to my next visit. Awesome night, awesome venue!
Maldron first birthday My lovely friend Shakira Obaid of Seren7 put on an awesome event for the Maldron Hotel’s birthday. The food was absolutely amazing and I hung out on the ‘hidden terrace’ with Cardiff’s beautiful people and soaked up the glorious sunshine. My highlight of the evening had to be the flash mob choir that was filtered amongst the guests and a total surprise. Well done Shakira, such a great night!

Entrecote Café De Paris
Moksh new menu
Too excited for the opening of Babak’s newest addition to the ever growing list at BA Brandings. Boasted as ‘Cardiff’s first and only independent restaurant to offer state of the art conference facilities’ the restaurant is simple yet elegant and delightfully inviting.
I’m definitely a lucky girl and this was one of those events that proved it! Jay (Page-Kapu/Ladybird) and I went along to Moksh in Cardiff Bay for the launch of their new menu.
Entrecote promises an incredibly rewarding selection of French Cuisine using seasonal and fresh market produce, with signature dishes and classics such as ‘Moules’ and of course the namesake cut of beef ‘Entrecote’. Chef and Patron Stephen Gomes is taking Indian food to a new level with the implementation of Molecular Gastronomy and Spherification, which you and I would know as ‘a bit Heston Blumenthal like’! We sampled some absolutely outstanding dishes such as Chocolate & Orange Chicken tikka and Hyderabadi Cup Cake’s and Ratnagiri Mango Lamb which includes jellied mango pieces. My personal favourite was ‘coloured Caviar’ and one of my dishes having a side of ‘candy floss’! Jay and I were completely blown away by the whole experience and to say I highly recommend Moksh would be a huge understatement!

Dine out in style at Oscars of Cardiff
Hamptons - the gift of Sunday Lunch
River View Chinese Restaurant
Watch the world go by as you dine in or out at this popular eatery in Pontcanna’s busy Romilly Crescent.
Fans of Hamptons, especially The Blue Pelican Café (and I include myself in this enlightened group) will already know how good it is but have you tried it on Sunday?
If you’ve a penchant for superb Chinese food – and I mean the real deal, then make your way to the River View Chinese Restaurant on Penny Lane.
I’m used to great food from The Blue Pelican Café Monday to Saturday but Sunday roast? At Hamptons? Really? Yes folks, it’s official, Hamptons serves up a rather decent Sunday lunch. Roasties, perfect veg (ever so slightly al dente) and great gravy. I went for the chicken with Prosciutto and mushroom duxelle and my wife chose her staple favourite, Beef. Both were beautifully cooked.
You can enjoy your meal, either on the ground floor, beneath parasols if the sun it too hot or bright, or at one of the tables on the first floor which overlooks the river Thaw. The clue really is in the title here. Dining at River View enables you to watch the wonderful wildlife, including the ducks and, if you look closely, you can also see one of the many river trout as you enjoy your lunch prepared using the freshest of ingredients and cooked to order by chef Shui Guang. Why not try one of chef’s south east Asian dishes? They’re proving very popular.
The emphasis here is on the freshness of the ingredients used and the friendliness of the service. Their brigade, led by Executive Head Chef John Cook, offer a superb international menu and aren’t afraid to experiment, bringing you the mouth-watering Classic Oscars Burger with cheese and cured bacon, tomato relish. You must try the Diamond rump steak with roast carrot and feta salad, toasted almonds, chilli raisin jam, Maris Piper chips or why not try a purple potato salad with chopped egg, string beans and roast garlic mayo? It would be rude not to top off your meal with an Oscars strawberry mess. Priding themselves on their quality wines Oscars can suggest an appropriate tipple to suit each course on their menus. This family friendly restaurant offers a dedicated children’s menu for the under 12’s which is available from noon to 7pm.
There are a couple of things I really liked about Hamptons. First, we didn’t get that slightly irritating question, ‘Is everything alright?’ I know it’s polite but, trust me, I’ll let you know if it isn’t. Second, although the meals came with gravy, we were given an extra jug. I love gravy and to have some ‘extra’ made me feel all warm and lovely inside (it’s a man thing). Starters and desserts were excellent. Eton Mess and Bread & Butter Pudding were passed back and forth between us with enthusiasm and they were very, very good indeed.
Whether you’re dining as a couple or as a family, the River View Chinese Restaurant shouldn’t be saved for a special occasion, especially as it’s reasonably priced and excellent value for money.
So, does Hamptons cut it for Sunday lunch? Yes. There’s just one slight drawback - you have to run the gift gauntlet and that might add a few pounds to a very reasonable bill.

NEWPORT
Terry M is Celtic Manor’s crowning glory Fine dining is not just about the food but the overall experience, so when I was given the chance to review the recent reincarnation of the Celtic Manor’s fine dining restaurant to say I was excited would be a major understatement. Formerly The Crown at Celtic Manor, the restaurant has taken on a new persona, that of its founder and creator Terry Matthews. Anyone that is familiar with Sir Terry will know his reputation and as an inspiration and true pioneer of Welsh business. It’s his energy and commitment to excellence that is felt through every aspect of the Celtic Manor experience.
We start with an Amuse Bouche of Hand Dived Scallop, Shellfish Oil, Potato & Leek Veloute. Ronan explains that the scallop is hand-picked by the diver as opposed to being trawled as they are much cleaner and free of sea debris. I find this really interesting and wonder if the difference will show in the taste and wow, it’s absolutely perfect and possibly the tastiest scallop I have ever had.
The restaurant is tucked away in the left corner of the hotel behind the hustle and bustle of the lobby. Once through the glass doors you are transported - the décor is elegant, minimalist and very chic. The colours are a sympathetic mix of creams with beautiful diamond drop chandeliers and high-backed cream leather chairs. My immediate feelings are those of opulence and luxury but surprisingly relaxing and comfortable.
Our starters are brought out by our waitress who describes each dish as she sets it down. I had chosen the Asparagus, Quails Egg, Soused Mushrooms & Parmesan. The asparagus is tender, the mushrooms are cute, and the quail’s egg is cooked to perfection - the mix of flavours work perfectly together, and topped with the strong taste of the crisp parmesan, is absolutely delicious.
My guest and I are immediately greeted by Ronan Hunter the restaurant manager who is extremely well presented, polite and accommodating. As it’s such a beautiful day, we are offered the choice of drinks on the adjoining terrace prior to taking our seats at our table. We are given menus with each dish being explained in detail by Ronan. The menu is well defined and varied, and provides a great choice for even the pickiest of palates.
My guest opted for the Red Mullet, this came with wild garlic, puy lentils and a poached egg (poached at 64 degrees centigrade!). This dish was cooked beautifully, the skin of the fish was crisp, the flavours intense but delicate and, all together, a lovely combination. Our dishes were cleared and we both agreed so far we were very impressed. The portion sizes were just right and we were both very excited about the next course. Our main courses arrived next with just the right amount of time between. I had decided on the filet of Pollack, kohlrabi, saffron potatoes with a chardonnay sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked and literally fell apart as my knife touched it. The vegetables worked well together and the sweetness of the chardonnay sauce really finished it beautifully. My guest also decided on a fish dish John Dory with squid, berlotti beans and a herb pistou. The fish was perfectly cooked and the combination of flavours a delight but the tastiest part of the dish was the almost smokey tasting squid that was thinly sliced ‘steak like’ and laid over the top of the fish. It was absolutely mouth watering and combined with the beans gave a perfect added kick. ❧ 13 ❧
Close to bursting point and with our taste buds absolutely tantalised we contemplated our dessert. With so much choice we did the only thing any self respecting couple would do and ordered two we both liked the look of to share. I chose the Bitter Chocolate Mousse, Basil Sorbet & Orange and my guest the Mango & Passion fruit Kulfi, Tropical Fruits and Coconut Espuma. The chocolate mousse was presented in a crisp chocolate shell with the sorbet sat on top. The flavour of the basil was a surprisingly great accompaniment to the bitterness of the chocolate, and the orange gave a much needed added sweetness. The kulfi was beautifully presented with the espuma in delicate cream puffs around the bowl. The flavours combined well with the coconut espuma taking away the sharpness of the fruit. Both dishes were delicious. To finish our dining experience we both chose a double espresso which was brought out with a selection of petit fours presented on a piece of Welsh slate. They were absolutely gorgeous and even more so because of their presentation. We absolutely loved Terry M. The restaurant is chic, the staff a delight, and the food is sublime. I would say for quality such as this you’d expect to pay quite a price but with the two course lunch menu at £14.95 a head it’s an experience affordable for all to enjoy! I’ve already booked for Sunday lunch.

COOK is run by Liz Smart and Karen Purchase. They were both teachers but discovered COOK food and were so impressed by the food that they decided they just had to introduce it to people in Cardiff! City Life talks to Liz and Karen.
COOK! For all our good intentions, few of us have the time to cook a meal worthy of Masterchef every evening. And while we all love the idea of friends coming over for dinner, the preparation and cooking of a meal can escalate into a time-consuming and expensive stress-fest.
COOK was first established 15 years ago. Its founding principle was to make food using exactly the same techniques and ingredients that a good domestic cook would use at home, so everything looks and tastes homemade. Today, nothing has changed and COOK continues to make its meals by hand at its kitchen in Kent. As proof of the food’s hand-prepared nature, the name of the individual chef who cooked each dish is printed on the packaging. The COOK shop on Wellfield Road has been open since June 2011. What does COOK offer? As well as providing top quality food at the best price that looks and tastes homemade, remarkably, all the meals are frozen and go straight from your freezer into your oven or microwave. We also pride ourselves on offering good service, so as well as a friendly smile and being offered a sample of the food when you enter the shop, we will also pack your bags, offer to carry your bags back to your car and try to help customers in any way we can.
We can cater for special nights in with Confit of Duck with a Juniper Berry Sauce, Beef Wellingtons , Monkfish Wellingtons and Sea Bass with Asparagus Tips with Linguine in a Lobster and Saffron Bisque. We also provide food suitable for parties and barbeques. We also have a wonderful array of desserts such as Chocolate and Truffle Torte, White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake, Passion Fruit Pavlova, and Pear and Almond Tart. We also have a range of cakes such as Carrot Cake, Victoria Sponge, Chocolate Cake and a variety of tray bakes.
Who are your customers? COOK offer meals that are suitable for everyone; families, busy professionals, vegetarians, and people with special dietary needs, e.g gluten free, children’s meals and baby food. We provide meals in one, two and four portions so you can mix and match if you happen to be feeding more than four people. Some of our best sellers in Cardiff are Moroccan Lamb Tagine, Fisherman’s Pie, Indonesian Vegetable Curry, Chicken Dijon and many more.
What do you think sets you apart? We find as soon as customers taste the food they want to try more as they realise how good the meals taste. We have wonderful staff, who make customers feel valued and there is always a happy atmosphere in the shop. We try to go out of our way to help our customers so, for example, we are happy to defrost puddings before collection, if requested, or even drop food off on our way home for our regulars! ❧ 14 ❧
Do you deliver? Yes, you can either go on-line at www.cookfood.net or phone the shop. Spend over £30 and your delivery will be free if you live in Roath, Penylan, LLanedeyrn and Cyncoed but you would have to phone the shop to place your order. We also deliver to Llandaff, Whitchurch, Penarth, Cowbridge, Dinas Powys, Radyr and Barry (over £50 for free delivery).

The Mulberry Street A little taste of Llandaff Llandaff is a little bit special. It boasts a cathedral so that sets it apart from any of Cardiff’s other ‘inner villages’, but there’s also an air of, well, the civilised about Llandaff. I don’t mean posh, just that it has a certain something and that ‘certain something’ comes as a very pleasant surprise. You can spend an enjoyable morning or afternoon in Llandaff. It has a mix of independent shops that aren’t found on the High Street. Once you’ve satisfied your shopping needs, you’ll be in need of sustenance, either lunch or dinner, and there really is only one option for me, The Mulberry Street Restaurant. You’d be forgiven for thinking The Mulberry Street Restaurant got its name from Llandaff’s association with the Mulberry trees and Llandaff Cathedral which is a minute walk up the road but, alas no, the name was chosen by the previous owner after a visit to the famous Mulberry Street in New York (synchronicity?) The Mulberry Street offers an excellent lunchtime and a la carte dinner menu. I can vouch for both after eating there several times. On this occasion, I was joining friends for lunch and fancied The Mulberry Street’s tapas or ‘Little Dishes’ menu as I enjoy the informality.
The food really is quite wonderful and acts as the lubricant to the gears of our conversation. I particularly like The Mulberry Street’s laid back approach. Nothing is too much trouble and, whatever the nothing is, it’s delivered with effortless ease by staff who are practically invisible unless you need them. I wonder sometimes whether they’ve been on a shapeshifting course. Food is simple and unpretentious and the ‘Little Dishes’ deliver flavour-filled plates of perfectly prepared food - just what you want when you’re out with friends. It was sort of a business meeting but the food soon kicked that notion in to touch and just turned it into a really nice catch-up and we all left saying, “Yes, I’ll call/email/text you etc.” None of us could remember what we were going to discuss.
“Simple and unpretentious the ‘Little Dishes’ deliver flavour-filled plates of perfectly prepared food just what you want when you’re out with friends.”
All our dishes were superb but I have to heap special praise on the desserts which were completely scrumptious and made me want to order more to take home. I like Llandaff a lot, but The Mulberry Street makes me love it.

MILL LANE
Indian indulgence at Juboraj Lunch for £6.95 in the centre of Cardiff! Really? Hard to believe, but true. Juboraj on Mill Lane’s affordable lunch menu will make you rethink lunchtimes in our fair city - especially if you love curry. If, like me, you’ve grown weary of the ‘chain gang’ and a curry is something you order from a takeaway now again, the Juboraj is well worth looking into. So, what do you get for your £6.95? Perfectly adequate portions for a start (for those of you thinking you’re going to get short-changed somewhere) and, to be honest, they were plentiful. I didn’t even consider a dessert even though a good selection is available. We ordered our starters and decided to share them. I chose Garlic Mushrooms and my wife went with the Chicken Chat, diced pieces of chicken tikka in Juboraj special chat Massala sauce. The mushrooms were lightly seasoned, very mild, tasty and complemented the spicy heat of the Chicken Chat. To accompany our meal I ordered a coke and my wife plumped for a small glass of house rosé which she made no comment on - an excellent sign as usually a sip of house wine generates ‘the face’. In this case, it wasn’t even mentioned so we can safely say the Juboraj house rosé met with her approval. Mains arrived with a big, beaming smile from Jamal (our waiter) - Chicken Kholapuri for my good lady, and a Chicken Korma for me. I’m not a fan of really hot food so my deliciously creamy Korma was a perfect choice. At first I thought it came with a little too much sauce but once I started mixing it with the fragrantly spiced Pilau Rice, the portion size was just about perfect. My wife’s Chicken Kholapuri was a little too hot for my liking but she enjoys the heat so the succulent pieces of chicken with the spicy sauce prepared with turmeric, cumin, green chillies and fresh coriander really hit the spot. All in all, Juboraj delivers a good lunchtime experience at an exceptionally reasonable price. The service is warm and genuinely friendly and a refreshing change from the automatons you meet elsewhere. If you like a curry it should be on your radar anyway but if the idea of lunch for two with drinks for under twenty pounds doesn’t ring your bell, what will?
JUBORAJ HOOKAH BAR
We didn’t indulge on our visit but if a smooth smoke is your thing, then Juboraj offers a single or double hose hookah or hubble-bubble as it’s known.

They say the only way is up but, for the Ashton family, owning the house of their dreams became something of a sideways move. City Life takes a closer look.
GLASS
HOUSE We first came across this stunning home when it was featured on the cover of the September 2010 issue of Self Build & Design magazine so upon reading the article, I was surprised and intrigued to see the property was in South Wales. As someone who would ultimately like to self build, I couldn’t help but admire the design and creativity that had gone into its creation. Mike and Pam Ashton had hoped to extend their existing home sideways when the 1930’s bungalow next door came onto the market in 2005. With much deliberation, they came to the conclusion that completely replacing the bungalow with a brand new home was a far more practical solution. After exploring various ideas, including building an oak framed property, the couple chose to build in rendered block-work with a natural slate roof.
The creative design includes a basement garage, workshop and den. Bedrooms are on the ground floor with a gorgeous open plan living, dining and kitchen area on the first floor which opens on to front and rear balconies framed with nautical themed stainless steel balustrades.
Mark Nayler, Managing Director of Vellacine said, “This was a wonderful project to be associated with. The tower and high level windows are glazed with Pilkington Activ Blue - a stunning blue glass that combines self cleaning properties with solar control for a cooler interior.”
One of the most striking features of the build is the glass. There seems to be acres of it. Blue aluminium-framed doors and windows from Cardiff-based Vellacine, the window and conservatory centre, ensure the light floods in, and their views over the Bristol Channel to the North Devon coast beyond are uninterrupted. Owners Mike and Pam declared, “We chose Ocean Blue coloured aluminium frames, which complement the glass, and the self cleaning coating means we don’t have to worry about reaching the higher windows.”
Mark added, “We manufacture all our frames right here at our facility in Cardiff. We work with many different types of client from schools, architects and builders and some of our contracts are very large. However, projects on the scale of Mike and Pam’s are particularly enjoyable as they’re a little outside the norm and demonstrate that frames don’t have to be simply white or black. It gives us enormous satisfaction when we see features like the one in the magazine as you see the effect it has on the end user. Vellacine is delighted to have been associated with this project.” You can’t help being impressed with Mike and Pam’s house. The stylish combination of contemporary design and natural materials; slate, glass, wood and stainless steel, has created a beautiful contemporary home and one that will be an inspiration to other self build enthusiasts. PICTURE PERFECT Paul Cornish and Jac Williams are photographers with a passion for beautiful imagery. Whether it’s people, places or products, it’s all fuel for their creative fire. In this issue we focus on their beautiful wedding photography. How long have you been trading as wedding photographers? It’s been five fabulous years with our business building year on year. We are almost at wedding saturation point with limited availability for this year but it’s definitely worth giving us a call! What’s your style of photography? There are loads of influences in what we do, but essentially, we capture what our clients ask us to based on what they want at the end? If our couples want a very classical styled album then it makes sense to shoot more classical shots, if they want an avant garde style, we will shoot for that, modern, paparazzi, fashion... It simply depends on them.
Why should a couple book you? Trying to be modest here but, we are really good at what we do. We give an awesome package for a reasonable price tag. We train constantly to improve our skills and thus our offering to our clients. Our unique selling point is that even at our very high level, we don’t charge based on time but on the end result, we don’t have a complicated time based pricing system. What advice would you give to a bride looking for a photographer? Other than come straight to us first, look for someone who understands light. If you see images with bright noses and dark eyes, don’t book them and if you see people with horizons going through their heads or if you feel unsure about the person you are talking to, don’t book them.
How do you discover what style will suit them? By talking to them, discovering who they are, we probably spend around 4 hours with our couples chatting prior to their day. Every wedding is unique, we ensure our quality and standards are high then use our expertise and knowledge to interpret what our couples want.
Other than that, it’s wise to consider a professional photographer with insurance and backup kit who can show you complete albums of good quality work. They’ll probably do a good job for you. You should still book us if we are available though!

LIFE’S A BEACH
LENITA-XTG.COM, £52.50 Great bold pattern unlike anything else I have seen on the highstreet. You’ll really stand out from the crowd in this bikini!
The summer has finally arrived and with it has come the sun! Hurray! So some of you will be taking holidays soon and others will be planning trips to the beach or just sunbathing in the garden. The one thing you’ll all be needing is a swimsuit - that goes for the gentlemen too! So, for this fashion feature we’ve chosen some of the best beach wear from the high street and some independent online suppliers. The big theme with swimwear for the ladies this season is vintage styled suits. Keep an eye out for these as they are very flattering on all sizes. Or if vintage isn’t you, go for something bold and floral. That’s very much on trend this summer. For men, bright and bold patterned trunks are everywhere, so be brave and show off your fun side in a pair of these. Obviously you can’t just wear a bathing suit all the time so we’ve also found a selection of summer accessories to wear too. Try donning a trilby or straw hat (that goes for men too!), a pair of comfy espadrilles or flip flops, an ethnic kaftan or comfy loose tshirt, some aviator shades or catseye sunnies, and don’t forget the big beach bag to pack it all in! But, most of all, wear stuff you’re comfortable with, enjoy yourself and, of course, don’t forget to put the lotion in the basket!

Years ago when someone mentioned going to a festival, the image that came to mind was of grungey hippies or hardcore rockers but, ever since Kate Moss made festivalgoing popular, everyone wants to be at one and, more importantly, be seen there. Festival sites aren’t as bad as they used to be either. These days you can expect a bit more luxury – think glamping with yurts and boudoir bed and breakfasts. But what to wear? We don’t all have Kate Moss’s body or her money, so what does one wear to a festival these days? Hopefully we’ve given you a few ideas. What we can’t guarantee is the sun, so you might end up covered in mud anyway. Isn’t that part of the fun though? Here’s hoping there’ll be some sunshine and you won’t get mud in your sandwiches!

When Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Fostering and Adoption teams say you really can change the course of a young person’s life – they mean it! Rebecca, 30, tells us how she thrived with her adopted family.
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS ■ There are 49 children aged from 0 to
eight waiting to be adopted in Rhondda Cynon Taf. ■ Twenty of them are aged two and
under and nine of them have a brother or sister who should be adopted alongside them.
What adoptive parents say “Following years of trying to conceive, we decided to become adoptive parents and began work with our social worker, who has since become a strong contact in our lives.”
■ Each of them has been removed their
biological families, through no fault of their own, and many are affected by the issues that led to them being taken into care in the first place. Rebecca, 30, tells us how she thrived with her adopted family. Every person who is adopted has a different story about how they came to be removed from their birth parents. There are just so many reasons why the family unit can break down. But it is never the fault of the babies and children who are removed from their birth parents. For me, my mother could not care for me and I was hospitalised due to malnutrition and went on to spend many of my first years in hospital due to ill health caused by neglect. My life was pretty grim. I was placed in care aged six months and fostered by the family who went on to adopt me. They treated me as their own and gave me the care, support and confidence I needed. They were always very open with me, they never kept secrets and I have always understood everything about my family situation. My adoptive parents told me I was special and they’d chosen me and that was how I always felt. They had chosen to be my mum and dad, and also had three biological children of their own and been foster carers for many years before I arrived in their care. In fact, the incredible work they did was passed down a generation as their daughter, my adoptive sister, was unable to have children herself, so, eight years ago, adopted three siblings.
But each of them is also a child, with boundless energy and limitless imaginations. They have birthdays and dream of a cake topped with candles, the chance to twirl in their princess party dress or thunder down the road on their new bike. They have energy - lots of it - and a penchant for Peppa Pig. They want to run and jump, sing and shout, cuddle up and read a story or tear around the football pitch until their legs can take no more. They want a family and the chance for an upbringing that gives them the best start in life. Some people adopt because they choose to, others because they cannot have biological children, whatever their reason, the decision to adopt is never an easy one. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is realistic and knows adoption is not for everyone. But it is also certain there are many people out there who, if they took the first step and found out more, would thrive as adoptive parents. There are huge amounts of information and support available at every step of the way, from information evenings and chats with those who have already adopted before you make a decision, to ongoing support, training and family days. ❧ 42 ❧
“We will be honest and say the process was personal and took some time, which was daunting, but that was forgotten when we were told we had been approved and our daughter was placed with us.” “Months of anticipation became years of joy and we cannot begin to explain how wonderful the last three years of our lives have been and how our days have flown by with laughter and excitement.” “Of course it has not been easy and our daughter has presented challenges, but then, life is not easy and all children present challenges. “Our advice would be to really consider adoption, don’t give up and take strength and advice from the professionals who help you every step of the way – the support we were given was second to none, enabling us to become confident. “We have since adopted our little girl’s biological brother, bringing the siblings back together and making our family complete.”

To those unfamiliar with the Valleys, they can still evoke images of scarred hillsides dominated by spoil heaps and waste tips. Nowadays, as residents know, the hills are largely green again, rivers full of fish run clean, such that visitors are often taken aback by the beautiful countryside that envelopes the towns and villages of The Valleys. And places to see and explore nature are close at hand…
TAKE A WALK ON
THE WILD SIDE The Valleys will have a new National Nature Reserve this summer. Aberbargoed Grasslands in the Rhymney Valley is already designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) of national and European importance. Its Purple Moor grass and rush pasture habitat is increasingly rare with more than 90% of it lost across Britain over the last 100 years. It supports a huge variety of wildlife including a colony of rare Marsh Fritillary butterflies. Subject to the approval of the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), the reserve is likely to be launched during Wales Biodiversity Week, commencing on June 11, with a series of community events, including a butterfly parade involving local schools. A new education centre is being created at the site and specially developed apps for iPhones and Android phones will help visitors understand and enjoy the reserve and the wildlife.
Before the official launch, Caerphilly CBC countryside rangers are hosting a party of nearly 50 ‘Ecogardes’ from northern France and volunteer rangers from Belgium at the grasslands to undertake activities as part of the trans-European WECAN project in which the Valleys Regional Park initiative is a partner.
Marsh Fritillary Butterfly Primarily a wetland species as its name suggests, these beautiful butterflies have been declining in numbers in recent years as their natural habitats have become increasingly scarce. However, in areas of the valleys, they are more than holding their own. Adults emerge in the middle of May, reaching a peak in early June. Image courtesy of © Cumbria Butterfly Conservation
Essential Nature
Just a few miles to the north of the grasslands and the town of Bargoed, Parc Cwm Darran, one of the Valleys’ wonderful Country Parks, is a great example of how former industrial sites have been reclaimed for nature and recreational purposes. The location of the former Ogilvie Colliery is now a tranquil haven where two lakes have been created, surrounded by thousands of trees. The park’s wonderful walking and cycling trails allow visitors to reconnect with nature and wildlife, especially at Cwmllywdrew Meadows, a Local Nature Reserve within the park, where Barn Owls hunt and Pied Flycatchers nest.

Tucked out of sight just off the ‘Heads of the Valleys’ Road to the east of Brynmawr is the Cwm Clydach National Nature Reserve, which recently featured as one of the ‘Top 50 Valleys Essentials’ by ‘Rough Guide to Wales’ author Mike Parker. The reserve is managed by CCW as part of the wider Cwm Clydach Woodlands SAC. Beech trees cling to the side of the deep limestone gorge cut by the Afon Clydach, which resonates in the summer to a symphony of songs from birds including the Nuthatch, Green and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. A new cycleway, which links to the Sustrans’ Valleys Cycle Network, passes through the reserve along the route of the old railway line.

Just off the Ebbw Fawr valley is Cwm Merddog, home to the Silent Valley reserve. Within the woodlands at Silent Valley, the remnants of the old dramline that transported coal from the drift mines on the hillsides can still be seen. Gwent Wildlife Trust and its partners have done a sterling job in managing the reserve for both conservation purposes and the enjoyment of visitors. The Trust runs the newly-built Environment Resource Centre nearby on the site of the former steel works at Ebbw Vale and is certainly well worth a visit as well. In addition to its magnificent variety of ferns, wild orchids and helleborines, Silent Valley claims the highest-altitude beech woodlands in mainland Britain. The adventurous may wish to check if they are higher than those perched on the punchbowl above Cwm Tyleri, just north of the local nature reserve at Cwmtillery Lakes, one of three such reserves along with Beaufort Woodlands and Parc Nant-y-Waun on the new Ebbw Fach Trail, a 16 km trail that links fourteen community-run greenspaces. The endlessly-fascinating contrast and relationship between man’s activities and nature often enhances the appeal of The Valleys’ wildlife sites. One of the many regeneration projects and
initiatives that are helping to transform the valleys is that at Cyfarthfa Park and Castle restoring the old Tramway and the historic Leat, which supplied water to the famous Cyfarthfa ironworks. Here a new walkway will form part of a heritage trail between Cyfarthfa and the Taf Fechan Nature Reserve. The reserve is part of the Cwm Taf Fechan Woodland SSSI where the fast-flowing Taf Fechan river cuts through close to limestone cliffs. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales has leased the site since 1975 from Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, with whom they jointly run and manage it, and recently they have appointed its first ever full-time warden to look after it. Just north of Swansea, close to the village of Craig Cefn Parc, the RSPB runs a nature reserve, also named Cwm Clydach. This has two special nature trails: a short one, which is suitable for pushchairs, and a longer one with steep, rocky sections. You might see spotted flycatchers and redstarts. Dippers and Grey Wagtails frequent the waters of the Clydach River whilst majestic Red Kites, with their iconic forked tails, can often be seen gliding overhead in their distinctive graceful fashion. If you fancy a walk on the wild side near you this summer, you know where to go. ❧ 47 ❧
The magnificent crags of Pen Pych at the top of the Rhondda Fawr, one of only a few flat-topped spur mountains in Europe, where buzzards and peregrines often soar on the thermals. Just to the south of Pen Pych is the fantastic SSSI woodland at Cwm Saerbren. Notable for its wonderful geological features, the site is accessible from Treherbert railway station.
The WECAN project is a European Interreg IVB Project with partners from Valleys Regional Park, Regionaal Landschap Kempen en Maasland in Belgium, Parcs Naturels Regionaux Scarpe Escaut and L’Avesnois in France. More details at: www.thevalleys.org.uk

Cathays Dental Clinic State-of-the-art treatment With so many dental practices available, how do you know what sets one apart from another. We’ve done the legwork for you by meeting two of the dentists behind one of Cardiff’s leading dental practices, Cathays Dental, Dr Kevin Gracias and Dr Amir Koochek. Please tell us a little about your background. We met in Cardiff, even though we are both from London originally. We started studying dentistry in 1993. Where did you train? DR KOOCHEK I qualified as a dental surgeon from Cardiff Dental School in 1999. As well as my BDS dental degree, I was awarded a BSc (Honours) degree in Dental Sciences. Following this, I trained at Guy’s Hospital in London and obtained my membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2001. I am also an honorary member of the American Dental Association and have a special interest in cosmetic dentistry, implants and orthodontics for which I have been the author of publications in dental journals in the UK and USA. DR GRACIAS I also qualified as a dental surgeon in 1998 from Cardiff Dental School. I would like to believe that I have built up a reputation for clinical excellence in aesthetic dentistry and I am an associate member of the British
Academy of Cosmetic Dentists as well as an associate member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I also have a Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies and have completed a Certificate in Dental Implant Surgery.
important - they are integrity and honesty. We believe that is why the practice has done as well as it has. No-one is ever sold anything here. The patients are merely given a wide range of treatment options and then the choice is theirs.
How long has the practice been established? The practice is one of the oldest practices in Cardiff, established some 70 years ago. It was relocated from the city centre to its present location in the 1980’s. We have been the owners and operators since 2001.
Is the first consultation free? We offer a free consultation for all cosmetic procedures that we undertake at the practice, so that our patients are fully informed about all treatment options available to them.
What are your roles in the practice? Primarily clinical dentistry, but as owners we need to manage the business side, too! What are your special interests? We offer a wide range of the latest and state-of-the-art treatment options to our patients. These include Invisalign, Veneers, Lumineers, Cerec 3d, Crown and Bridgework, Dental Implants, Laser Tooth Whitening, Botox and Fillers. How far do people travel to visit you? The majority of our regular patients live in and around the Cardiff area. However, for specific cosmetic treatments, we treat patients from as far afield as London, Birmingham and Mid Wales. What do you think sets you apart from other dental practices? The practice is based on two key points that we regard as being the most ❧ 54 ❧
Are your patients private or a mix of private and NHS? We have a mix of NHS and private patients. Some of our private patients are Denplan insurance patients. Is it only dental that you offer? We have also undertaken extensive training in facial aesthetics, and offer our patients a variety of anti-wrinkle treatments including Botox and fillers. What are your plans for the future? We are looking to expand our business in the near future by bringing on board other healthcare professionals so that we may offer our patients an even wider range of treatment options. People say that kitchen trends follow fashion trends and, whilst this may be true, are we all slaves to fashion? We ask Steve Bloom, Director and designer at Spacefittingfurniture.
FORM & FUNCTION
“Yes and no,” says Steve. “What it’s really about is that people’s lifestyles have changed. Not only do we all want a beautifully designed kitchen, but it needs to be about ‘convenience meets multifunctionality’.
“Yes, it needs to look good.” Steve smiles. I think I’ve touched a design nerve. But no, he’s away again. “When you’re looking at your kitchen all of the time, that’s important of course. But…”
We all tend to hang on to things we don’t actually need. Rational’s philosophy is to help life in the kitchen become less cluttered. It’s all about efficiency. It’s about making your life, as the user, much easier.”
The finished design needs to take into account how much time is spent in it and who will be spending time in it. If it’s a family with kids, how old are they? Does the family have big dogs? Will it be used for family meals and entertaining? Will the family want to watch television or listen to music in it? All of these things come into play.”
I sense I’m in for a form versus function fight and I’m about to lose horribly.
Steve pulls out one of the deep drawers to demonstrate his point. He’s got a point actually. Everything about the Rational Kitchens sings style but there’s also a usability about these kitchens that says someone very clever and creative has sat down and spent time thinking through every detail.
“Isn’t it all about superficial design these days?” I ask. I’m thinking minimalistic super white handle-less creations that no-one’s allowed to touch unless they’ve been sterilised.
“I always use this analogy; when you’re buying a car, you don’t set out to look at a green car, you look for the car first and then pick the colour. It needs to be functional. That’s why we sell Rational Kitchens. Not only do they look good but the company has really thought things through. Storage units that can house all of your pots, pans and essentials that pull out so that you can actually reach them all of them, all of the time. ❧ 56 ❧
“They’ve also thought a lot about the materials they use such as new woods ceramics and slate” says Steve, “Which makes my job more fulfilling as I have a much greater palette of resources to refer to when I’m designing.”
“Change the mood and style of your kitchen.” It’s strange isn’t it, you start having a conversation with someone about kitchen style trends and the next thing you’re completely hooked by what you’re seeing and hearing. And that’s the great thing about Steve Bloom. Yes, you’re sat in a beautiful kitchen showroom surrounded by gorgeous kitchens but, listening to Steve, you sense he has a real passion for design. “Look at this!” He smiles again. “People like something a bit different; we’ve introduced wall-mounted base units that look like they’re suspended in the air, adding a contemporary sense of free-flowing space and those, combined with the virtually ceilinghigh wall units, genius - they just look gorgeous. And they can easily be integrated into dining areas and living spaces too.”
“It’s all about efficiency. It’s about making your life much easier.” I’m hooked, I have to say, to the point where I’m practically reaching for my cheque book to write out a deposit! “So what about colour?” I hear myself asking. “Colour plays a huge part in the kitchen,” Steve enthuses. “Remember, extreme colours are very tying but adding a splash of colour to neutrals and woods with art or fabrics, you can change the mood and style of your new kitchen not only to current trends but also to your own taste and even with the seasons. Your kitchen should never date!” ❧ 57 ❧

F IT FOR L IFE You’ve only got to turn on the TV or, even easier, look around you to see that as a nation we really need to shape up. According to the professionals, for general health, we need at least thirty minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on five or more days of the week.
“For general health we need at least thirty minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on five or more days of the week.”
Using his own software program which gives a near perfect analytical output for his clients, Kam Al-Mazrui can help with weight loss and toning, functional training, boxercise, circuits, band and tube training, SAQ, kettle bells, boot camps and nutrition and supplementation advice.
Dig a little bit deeper on the stats and you’ll find that it is likely that, for many people, 45-60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a day will be needed to prevent obesity. With only 10 per cent of us exercising more than five times a week, it’s hardly surprising that, over half the population (51 per cent) are unhappy with their weight, while the most recent government statistics show that more than a fifth of adults in England and Wales are obese.

When I joined, what astounded me was the variety of training techniques, which made getting fit an enjoyable experience, rather than a tedious one. I was so impressed, I moved the Cardiff Devils Professional Ice Hockey Squad to be trained by Mike Parsons the conditioning coach and owner at The Fitness Factory Cardiff, and last season we saw the best season at Cardiff Devils for 15 years. If, like me, your expectations and demands of a night out are extremely high then look no further than Crystal Boutique Lounge & Club on Cardiff’s buzzing St Mary St.
A SPRINKLE OF ‘STARDUST’
ON CRYSTAL Those expectations and demands are simple, no rowdy drunk men, no queuing at the bar for eternity, no tacky décor and absolutely NO party tracks!
You approach the door and the first thing that strikes is well presented, friendly staff. Yes there’s the obligatory clipboard and manager of clientele but here he’s friendly, chatty and instantly recognises a regular face. The club runs a membership system that eases entrance into the club which we like – a lot! Membership is on an invite only basis but is easy to obtain if you meet the clubs requirements. There are three types of card, Grey, Black and Platinum. They all allow queue jump and free entry but the Platinum members are entitled to invite guests free of charge too which is perfect for entertaining those all important clients. The club itself is luxury and opulence personified. When you see the club for the first time time, its breathtaking. The lounge area is swanky, the bar is chic and the ‘chained VIP’ area is very, very cool. The design is absolutely stunning!
When asked for a description of the music I am told its ‘double dipped funky disco with a twist of the old school’! I have absolutely no idea what this means but it’s definitely funky, deliciously girlie and makes me want to dance all night! The bar is stocked with every conceivable drink a discerning socialite would expect and the waitressing staff are attentive and well informed. Table service is available if preferred and can be reserved in advance as can the VIP area for an extra special evening. Crystal promises as good a night as any you would have in London but the added bonus being, its full of friendly, chatty, fun Welsh people! This is, as expected, met with a lot of reservation and negative feeling and he’s all too aware of. I caught up with Alex during the video shoot for his new single, Stardust in none other than our very own boutique club, Crystal. CITY GIRL Alex, what made you take this new direction into music? ALEX I love to entertain; I’m a natural performer, since I was a little kid. I love the glitz and the glamour. Even though I’m known as a cage fighter, I still see it as putting on a show, it’s all about entertaining. I’m under no illusion of being the next Michael Jackson, I’m just having fun. CITY GIRL So, tell me about the song. ALEX It’s written in conjunction with Mark and Rob of Shelter, who are both accomplished music producers. We came up with the idea when I was away from home. I told the boys how I felt, my love for Chantelle and the fact I was away from her a lot and the lyrics have a lot of meaning. CITY GIRL Why did you choose Crystal for the video? ALEX To be honest I left the decision to Mark and Rob. They only live up the road and they absolutely love it here. It’s a great place, really great. It’s unfortunate I have to go otherwise I would have had a chance to check it out properly. Next time I’ll be here. Download now at iTunes Shelter (feat Alex Reid) Stardust. Liberty Marketing turns up the juice Liberty Marketing, one of Wales’ largest online marketing agencies and one of the fastest growing in the UK, was host to Google last month. Members of the Google team, responsible for running the recent Getting British Business Online campaign in and around Wales, set-up a Juice Bar in the Liberty meeting room for a day.
The one-off event was designed to advise small businesses on the various Google products, and how they can be used to promote a website. Business owners and marketing managers that had questions about search engine marketing were invited along to chat with the guys from Google and Liberty. At the Juice Bar, attendees learned how to target local businesses with Google Places, how to use Google Analytics to understand the traffic on a website, and how Google AdWords and Pay Per Click advertising works.
“...attendees learned how to target local businesses with Google Places.” Gareth Morgan, Managing Director of Liberty, commented, “It is great to be one of the few agencies that has been invited to put an event like this together with Google. As one of the first Google Engage agencies in the UK, we have long worked with the search engine to keep ourselves fully trained and able to best advise clients.” Liberty also celebrated its fourth birthday in May. When you consider that the two older venues, The North Star and The Vulcan used to be traditional ‘spit and sawdust’ establishments, Chameleon’s re-invention is nothing short of miraculous. These pubs are now thriving with a mix of locals, students and families looking for good food and drinks at reasonable prices. The beautifully converted North Star, a boutique styled Victorian pub out on North Road completes the trio. The Mocka Club and Café on Cardiff’s popular Mill Lane, in the Café Quarter, is a completely different offering. Perfect for breakfast or lunch and, as evening arrives, dinner or cocktails. Stylish and sensual, Mocka’s personality changes as the sun goes down.
The Potted Pig has become one of Cardiff’s ‘must eat at’ restaurants with a waiting list to prove it, and if meat is your thing, then visit The Meating Place and you’ll be in heaven. Whether it’s a venue for the wedding of your dreams, a superb location to watch the Rugby Internationals, enjoy an afternoon tea, an evening of jazz, dinner, or as an arts venue, Park House, overlooking the gardens of the National Museum of Wales, is a stylish and elegant setting.
OPEN HOUSE There have been many changes at Park House in recent months. Owners Adam and Claire Pledger have a passion for good food, good wine and good service and, being able to offer all of this, and much more in this beautiful Grade 1 listed, four storey, gothic residential building designed by William Burges, is a real pleasure for them. Once a private members club, Park House is now open for all to enjoy. Burges Restaurant At the heart of Park House is the traditional Burges Restaurant, overlooking the gardens of the National Museum Wales through its glorious multi panelled gothic windows. Named after the building’s famous architect, William Burges who was a leading exponent of Gothic Revival, the quirky, gothic–inspired features, oak panelling and ornamental detail of Burges’ work have been combined with contemporary tones to create an ambience of sophisticated luxury.
Adam and Claire have spared no expense in developing a superb brigade. To complement their team led by the immensely talented Head Chef, Jonathan Edwards, the couple have brought in Michelin-starred Welsh chef, Roger Jones, to mentor the team and it’s clear from this decision that they have their eye on the great prize for The Park House. “We want to redefine the standard of gourmet food in Cardiff,” says Adam. Roger Jones has cooked for the Royal family and currently owns the highlyacclaimed Restaurant Of The Year, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn in Wiltshire and brings a wealth of talent and experience as part of his ambition to raise culinary standards in the Welsh capital. Roger is clearly enthusiastic about his role. “The aim is to bring the highestquality Michelin-starred cuisine to Cardiff,” he says. “Something that, sadly, has been missing from Cardiff for far too long,”
It seems that the ambition and the brigade’s efforts are paying off with tables already selling out. Roger adds, “The Park House has always been my preferred choice when I’m home watching rugby internationals. We have big ambitions to put Cardiff on the international culinary map and I’m really looking forward to working with Jonathan and his talented team at The Park House.” Roger has always sourced Welsh products while at The Harrow and it will clearly be easier to do that in Cardiff. “I use lobsters from Little Haven, Pembrokeshire, lamb from Cardiganshire, ducks from Carmarthenshire, Welsh Black beef from Ceredigion and spider crabs from West Wales,” he says proudly. Jones spent his early years working for the British Government as well as the Royal Family and was the youngest chef to run State Banquets at the tender age of 21. He’s cooked for Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street and was awarded his first Michelin star in 2006 which he’s retained every year since. Co-owner, Claire Pledger, said, “We’re delighted to have such an incredible team on board. Roger’s influence combined with the creative talents of Jonathan and his team are giving us something to shout about. We’re so proud of what we have all achieved.

“The menus are seasonal and feature a gourmet tasting menu...”
Roger Jones (left) and Jonathan Edwards
Adam added, “Roger will redesign the menus to feature some of his signature dishes, including a luxury fish finger made with lobster and also assist in building a world-class wine collection at The Park House.” The Park House menu is seasonal and features a gourmet tasting menu showcasing their signature dishes. An excellent value set lunch menu coupled with lunch and dinner à la carte menus leave the diner spoiled for choice. Vanilla Rooms Vanilla Rooms at Park House is a place to relax and unwind in chic and opulent surroundings. The Vanilla Rooms is a hip and cool cocktail bar situated in the basement of this stunning building. It is beautifully appointed and the decor is chic, comfortable and sophisticated, providing an exclusive retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Located on the lower ground floor of the Club, it’s the perfect place to spend an evening enjoying fabulous cocktails especially prepared by Christos Kyriakidis, the renowned mixologist.
The Terrace The outside terrace area has had a makeover with additional seating for 40 people, parasols, wind sails and a dedicated terrace food and drink menu, along with table service on Fridays and Saturdays, dependant on the weather. Park House Jazz Club Park House Jazz Club is a monthly event that aims to bring the finest jazz acts to Wales for an evening of food, wine and world class music. The jazz evenings will all start at 7pm, when food will be served before the bands start playing at approximately 8.30pm. Spire celebrates three decades in style Spire Cardiff Hospital celebrated its 30th anniversary in style by hosting a black tie evening at the Wales Millennium Centre. Opened in June 1982 the hospital is now one of 38 hospitals in the Spire Healthcare group. The event formally acknowledged the contribution that consultants and staff have made over that time, whilst also presenting long service awards to those individuals who have worked at the hospital for the full 30 years. Guests were entertained by the newly formed Spire Choir and special guest Max Boyce. A huge success, the evening saw guests wowed by a great venue, good food and fantastic entertainment.

Have you ever wondered what makes people in business tick? Me too. In a new series of features, City Life focuses on Cardiff’s business community. In this issue we catch up with Tim Corrigan, Operations Manager at The Chameleon Group and Managing Partner of the North Star.
A DAY IN THE LIFE... Can you tell us what your role is in the Chameleon Group? I’m Operations Manager and Managing Partner of The North Star in Cardiff.
What’s for breakfast? Scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast with chilli flakes and a cappuccino or water. Oh and a Berocca.
How do you manage the work/life balance? It is just that, a balance. I have a life and work is an integral part of it but I just try and make sure that work doesn’t affect my life in a negative way if it’s really busy or stressful. It’s important not to let it become a counterproductive element.
How stressful is your life? It’s really stressful! As well as trying to make sure the Chameleon Group as a whole progresses and does well. I also have to make sure a business I am a partner in (North Star) does well. My partner Vicki is pregnant too so I do have a lot to think about on a daily basis.
Where do you go to socialise and to unwind? I love independents so try and use them as often as I can. Sadly the economy is making it harder for the independents to survive so all and any custom helps. They try and do everything with a little more personality than the corporates in the city. I support The College House on North Road for great Coffee, Brava in Pontcanna for breakfasts, The Meating Place for a great steak and for a drink and to unwind, Crystal.
What three gadgets could you not live without? My partner answered one of these for me... my phone! I couldn't live without it, but she could quite happily live without it!? My iPod and that’s about it. I don’t really use any others. How do you motivate yourself? I always try to concentrate on the solution and not the problem. This seems to work for me and keeps me motivated whenever something challenging happens. I also just want to see things get the recognition they deserve because of all the hard work the staff and managers put in to make sure their customers get the best service or experience they possibly can. Describe your day Varied, due to the types of businesses in the group and the North Star but it mainly involves ensuring the smooth running of all aspects of the businesses as well as making sure we are keeping our standards up and trying to offer our customers a better experience than what’s generally on offer. The recession has made everyone up their game which is great for the customer but makes being different a little bit harder for the operators. If, like 90% of UK adults, you have ever had chickenpox, there is a 1 in 4 chance you will develop shingles at some point in your lifetime.
S
hingles (also known as herpes zoster) is a condition that is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. Once you’ve had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in your body until it is reactivated, causing shingles. It is not fully known what causes the virus to reactivate, but anyone who has had chickenpox could develop shingles in later life, often many years after the original chickenpox infection. It tends to occur more frequently in people aged 50 years or older. It usually causes a rash on one side of the body. The symptoms of shingles are usually mild but can be very unpleasant for some. Shingles usually starts with a headache, fever, and tiredness, and you are likely to feel unwell. It’s very common to feel a burning pain somewhere on the body, which may become extreme. Within a few days to three weeks this area of pain will start to develop a red rash, which will turn into fluid-filled blisters. When these painful blisters burst they will then turn into sores that will eventually crust over and heal. Most people recover but some people continue to feel extreme pain in the area of the rash that can remain for many months, or in extreme cases even years. This is known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN can prevent
sufferers from living a normal life, and for some even a slight breeze against the skin can be painful and distressing. Shingles varies from person to person and some people will require treatment. See your GP as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours of the rash occurring. Most people do not have any long-term effects, but for some shingles can cause complications. If shingles develops in the eye it can lead to decreased vision or even permanent blindness in the affected eye. It is possible to prevent shingles. See your GP who can give you more information. Other sources of information include www.shinglesaware.co.uk or the Shingles Support Society, 41 North Road, London N7 9DP who have a helpline (0845 123 2305) and a website (www.shinglessupport.org)
