A round The CiTY PONTCANNA

Dine out in style at Oscars of Cardiff Watch the world go by as you dine in or out at this popular eatery in Pontcanna’s buzzing Romilly Crescent. The emphasis is definitely on the freshness of the ingredients and that, combined with the friendliness of the service, means you’re in for a real treat. Oscars offer a superb international menu and they certainly aren’t afraid to experiment, bringing you the mouthwatering Classic Oscars Burger with cheese and cured bacon, tomato relish - scrumptious! You must try the King Scallops with butter crushed peas and bacon and a pickled apple salad or, our personal favourite right now, Baked Chicken (Butterflied chicken breast roasted in Tahini hummus, cucumber, cottage cheese and smoked bacon). Oscars does a very good veggie selection too better than most.

They have an excellent wine list, and the dessert selection never fails to tempt. This family friendly restaurant offers a dedicated children’s menu for the under 12s which is available from noon to 7pm. Oscars is one of our favourite restaurants for lunch or dinner and is especially good al fresco when the sun is shining.

Celebrating Bay Tree Wine Company’s move Guests enjoyed a glass (or two) of Prosecco and tasty canapés to celebrate the company’s move to The Maltings, East Tyndall Street. Guests also enjoyed looking around the magnificent converted Grade II listed malthouse. Introbiz, one of south Wales’ biggest business networks is happy to announce that its Introbiz Business Show 2013 is sold out and is set for success.

Introbiz Business Show Stands are now completely sold out for the return of the Introbiz Business Show to Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday 26th September 2013.

Entrepreneur Kevin Green with Introbiz’s Tracey Jenkins and Paul Smolinski

The Introbiz Business Show is free to attend, and will be followed by a private event for business VIPs to mingle with the show’s celebrity speakers. Dragon’s Den star Hilary Devey has been announced as the key note speaker at this year’s Introbiz Business Show. Ms Devey said, “I am a keen supporter of British entrepreneurs and I am looking forward to having the opportunity to stand in front of Welsh business people and sharing my own experiences with them.” The Introbiz Business Show will also feature an address from Welsh entrepreneur and self-made millionaire Kevin Green, and a speech from best-selling author and entrepreneur Daniel Priestley. As an ambassador for Entrepreneurship Academy Wales, Kevin hopes to encourage young people to shine in the workplace and take more interest in business. Daniel may well inspire more young people to start their own businesses, given that his entrepreneurial attitude made him a millionaire before the age of twenty five.

Introbiz Director Paul Smolinski said, “Ms Devey is an outstanding example of the sort of business success that can be achieved in this country and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Introbiz Business Show.

I’m also extremely pleased to announce that Kevin Green and Daniel Priestley will be speaking to our members and guests, given that 19 to 24 year old entrepreneurs are one of the fastest growing business markets in South Wales.” This is the second business show for Introbiz and, with stands sold out three months in advance, looks set to be even more successful than last year’s event. Paul said, “We were overwhelmed with the success of the Introbiz Business Show 2012 and have sold out our exhibition stands for this year’s event.” Introbiz was founded in 2009 by Tracey Smolinski and with more than 175 members is now one of South Wales’ biggest business networks. Lydia Seymour

The Cardiff Pointe development has to be one of the most exciting developments in South Wales for a decade. With plans for over 600 residential properties bordering the Cardiff Sports Village and views across the bay and Penarth Marina, Cardiff Pointe will no doubt be one of the city’s most sought after locations.

To the Pointe City Life met with Lydia Seymour at the marketing suite to find out more about this exciting project.

What type of housing is being built? There is a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and four and five bedroom houses being built within this first phase. All are contemporary new designs from Cardiff-based architects Scott Brownrigg. Who do you think the properties will appeal to? There is a diverse range of homes so there is something for everyone. Prices range from £175,000 for the two bedroom Caravel apartment right through to £750,000 for the impressive five/six bedroom spacious water-fronted Brigantine executive family home. Will there be any social housing involved in the project? The development will bring many social benefits to the area including the provision of significant off-site affordable and split-tenure property. Who will be marketing the properties? The launch of Cardiff Pointe and initial sales are being handled by a select team that includes agents Allen & Harris (part of the Sequence Group nationwide). The on-site Marketing Suite is open Thursday to Monday, 10am until 5pm. The developer has invested in higher specification fixtures and fittings, can you tell us more about this? To quote from the brochure, “Great care and attention to detail has been taken in ensuring the new homes at Cardiff Pointe are finished to the highest possible standards of specification and designed exclusively by Figurehead Homes and Scott Brownrigg.”

German Rational kitchens designed by Cardiff based Spacefittingfurniture, contemporary bathrooms designed by Porcelanosa, energy-efficient windows plus hi-tech security mean that buyers will enjoy a level of finish and design to match the stunning location.

How many homes and being built and what type? Phases one and two feature 98 homes Plots 1 to 99 (there’s no number 13!). There is a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and four and five bedroom houses being built within this first phase. All are beautiful new designs from Scott Brownrigg architects. What facilities will be on site and when are these planned? There is already a range of incredible facilities on site, including the worldclass Cardiff International White Water Rafting Centre, the international pool with its fantastic fitness suite, Cardiff Ice Arena, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club plus food and retail shopping, restaurants and pubs right on the doorstep. In future, these facilities will be complemented by two Olympicstandard ice pads, the snow dome, retail, restaurants and leisure facilities and a six-star hotel. Have any been sold so far? Interest in the properties has been excellent - a stunning waterfront Barque five bedroom home was reserved within an hour of launching Cardiff Pointe. We’ve had considerable interest in the full range of available properties already. What impact do you think this development mean to Cardiff and specifically Cardiff Bay? What benefits will it bring? Cardiff Pointe is helping to create a new destination in Cardiff - one that underlines Cardiff ’s status as a worldclass city and reinforces the importance of Cardiff Bay as an integral part of that. 12

“ Cardiff Pointe is helping to create a new destination in Cardiff - one that underlines Cardiff ’s status as a world-class city.”

The on-site Marketing Suite is open from Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. For more information please contact Allen & Harris on 0845 340 3927 www.cardiffpointe.co.uk 13

Twenty five years on and Richard Green has developed from a one man operation to a highly successful glass and glazing company in the Vale of Glamorgan. His passion for quality and his commitment to the Industry remains as strong today as ever. We chatted to Richard to find out more.

Abbey Glass A Clear Choice

How many staff do you employ? We are very lucky to have a great group of individuals working at Abbey Glass. We have five fitting teams, four office staff and shop floor personnel. All in all our staff total twenty one people. Is it a family run business? No, although we do consider ourselves as family as we are such a small team of people, many of which have been here from anywhere between three and eighteen years What services do you offer? We cover a wide range of services to all sectors including leisure, hotel, restaurant, schools & hospitals. Our range of services include bespoke staircases, balustrade, glass/mirror work, fire glass stockist, acoustic glazing, supply and install of aluminium, wood and UPVC framework - anything that has a glass requirement we can provide.

Who are your customers? Our customer base is mainly commercial, however we also supply a domestic service. Our main customers are Whitbread whose brands include Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre, Costa Coffee and Beefeater. In 2010 we were asked by Whitbread to assist in reducing the need for secondary glazing in their new build hotels. We started testing at Salford University and designed a toolkit of glazing products which satisfies the need of every new build acoustically with our own patented product, Premierfon, which achieves an acoustic performance of your average brick wall. JD Wetherspoon are another major client which we service throughout the UK on new projects, one of our most recent and largest projects for them included design and build of a bespoke glass staircase and glass walkway at The Mount Stuart, Cardiff Bay.

We have been involved with Whitbread over the past year in developing the exciting new generation of ‘hub’ rooms by Premier Inn. These include state of the art glass bathroom cubicles, with glass shower enclosures, glass walls and our acoustic aluminium window frame. These inner city projects will roll out throughout 2014 and see us again at the forefront of the innovation in assisting with making these reality. What makes Abbey Glass special? We feel that we provide a unique service to the construction industry through working with the architects from the start of each project and delivering solutions to their problems or assisting them to achieve their goals. We pride ourselves as a team, dedicated to our clients in getting it right, first time every time. The people here have grown along with the company and are passionate about going that extra mile to give the service and quality that we truly believe can be a struggle to find in our Industry. Do you support any local charities? I believe it’s important to give something back into the community and that’s why Abbey Glass are happy to support The Tom Maynard Trust. The Trust helps the development of aspiring disadvantaged cricketers and other sportspeople who require support with different aspects of their career development, including bursaries; help with training and education, financial support for overseas placements and assistance with kit and equipment.

With so many letting agents available, how would anyone know which one to use? We chatted to Dr Graham Givens about why he chose Keylet to manage his property portfolio.

Keylet

Peter and Emma Vidler, Directors of Keylet Executive

What services do they provide? In addition to the basic management services, I have worked with the Keylet team to ensure that our new properties are amongst the most energy efficient in Cathays, which will ensure that they are cheaper to run/ heat/ light than all others - at least that’ll be one of the ever increasing costs of student accommodation that hopefully will not increase. What features have you incorporated in your accommodation? Double insulated lofts/cavity wall insulation and the most efficient new combi boilers. All appliances have to have a minimum A+ rating. LED lights throughout, as well as large solar PV electricity panels, providing free electricity to the tenants, all of which should ensure the properties are 60-70% more efficient than what is usually found in Cathays.

How many properties do you have in your portfolio? I enjoy dentistry but my main passion is property and development, to then keep and rent out, I don’t sell them, just purchase four to five new houses per year. Why did you feel the need to use a letting agent? As I am very busy working part time in my practices as well as managing them and a large number of staff, I need an agent that’s hard working, well organised and also has the prestige and good name as Keylet, to deal with the day to day running and management of all my properties. This saves me a lot of work and allows me to concentrate any spare time on purchasing more property and then renovating them to a higher standard than most property in Cathays and the Heath.

Why did you choose Keylet? They have a good reputation for dealing with the better quality accommodation, especially in Cathays where standards are generally poor, but with the new licensing improving. Most agents that I have dealt with promote a great service but rarely perform as well. Keylet are sharp, well organised and tend to rent 90% of all my new properties within seven days of getting the details. I’d like to think I help this by the quality of property I develop although I am aware that they are also selective to maintain their good name and will market properties only if they are off a consistently high standard.

“ I would and do definitely recommend them to others.” 19

How many properties do Keylet manage on your behalf? They now manage over 35 of my properties, and this is growing by four to five a year, from new purchases and from transfers from other local, but poorly performing agents. Would you recommend Keylet to friends and colleagues? I would, and do, definitely recommend them to others. I have to over ten fellow friends/colleagues who now use Keylet.

The champagne’s chilled, it’s a beautiful summer’s evening in Cardiff ’s beautiful Morgan Arcade and Russell Scott Lawson and his team at Hawkes Essentials wait patiently and, perhaps, a little pensively for their first guests to arrive.

Smart Thinking OnRoute shirts will join iconic British brand Crombie at Hawkes Essentials this autumn and Russell has a few more irons in the fire and, as we made our way to Lab 22 for cocktails, I thought the whole evening summed up Hawkes Essentials and Russell’s attitude to pretty much everything he does give it 110% and never compromise.

Russell says Hawkes Essentials has been twenty years in the making. The completion of phase two, the ground floor, after the major works undertaken to completely revamp downstairs over nine months ago has been a long time coming. The fact that Hawkes Essentials is an independent retailer makes the achievement even more impressive. Big chains throw money quite effortlessly at refits every five years but, for independents, it takes a serious investment in not only cash but of time and energy, both physical and emotional. Bottom line, it’s a risk. But Russell’s uncompromising standards and unwavering belief and desire to make Hawkes Essentials better, even when it already stands head and shoulders above many high street smart brands, is something to be admired - there’s no such thing as ‘that’ll do’ at Hawkes Essentials.

Nigel Hall and Crombie will be the latest additions to the Hawkes armoury this autumn and, coupled with the uncompromising service you’ll receive at Hawkes from all the staff, they’ll be well worth a visit. As we sipped ice cold champagne and nibbled canapés, we chatted with many of Russell’s customers and friends. We got a sense of what it is that makes Hawkes Essentials such a great shop and why it inspires such loyalty from customers. Everyone talked about the quality of service - how nothing is too much trouble, how they go the extra mile. They love the brands. ‘Russell has an eye for detail’ they said but, more than that, he understands his customers. Many said that he just has an uncanny knack of putting pieces together - a great shirt, a smart jacket, a stunning pair of shoes. They talked about fit but mostly they talked about quality. Continuing our Exposure series, this issue we chat to Sian Owen who tells us a little about her life and passion for photography.

Exposure What qualifications do you hold? I was fortunate that my secondary school offered photography for GCSE and A level. This is where I was taught the technical side of photography. I used a Canon AE1, shot black and white film and processed and printed my own films and prints in the dark room. After studying, I had a deferred place at Caerleon University to study photographic art. During this year I worked with a well established Cardiff photographer where I photographed weddings with a Hassleblad medium format camera, This taught me to be so disciplined as I only had twelve shots per roll of film, so it had to be technically correct! I then went on to work for a contemporary portrait studio and decided to not go to university. I was there for over six years creating beautiful images for my clients. I gained the company’s diploma and the position of style director. What made you get into photography? From an early age I had a camera, just a Pentax compact 35mm. I photographed almost everything! I loved how I could capture a moment and look back at it time and time again. I found photograph albums fascinating, I would sit in my gran’s living room for hours looking through old pictures of our family. My first real buzz was when we were on a family holiday in France. I was only eight and took some photographs of the sunset at the beach. I was so excited when the prints came back. My parents have it enlarged on the wall in their house now.

What subject do you prefer to photograph the most? This is a difficult one. To be invited to photograph a couple’s special day is such an honour. As weddings are booked far in advance, I get to meet with my couples whilst they are at the early planning stage. We build a great relationship along the way, really getting to know each other, which means I can offer a personal approach. Every wedding day is different and has a unique story to tell.

My favourite part of the day is the bridal prep in the morning. I love photographing the shoes, flowers and capturing all the fine details. The house is full of excitement and nerves. The mother of the bride is sometimes in a panic that everything is not going to schedule. The bridesmaids are happily applying their make-up. The father of the bride is enjoying a bacon roll, and the bride is usually the most relaxed! Photographing children is a joy. From newborn to toddlers and teens. Our lives are so busy, time passes us by and we don’t realise how much our little ones are growing and changing, so having those moments frozen as beautiful images is precious and priceless.

What subject matter (or person) would you like to photograph? I was very fortunate to be flown to the beautiful Lake Bled in Slovenia to photograph a wedding. I would like to photograph more weddings in Europe; the beautiful quaint villages of France, Austria and Italy offer so many photographic opportunities. Can you give us a brief breakdown of equipment you use? I’m a dedicated Nikon user. I have a range of lenses to cover all variations of focal lengths, 24-70mm, 70-300mm, 12-24mm. One of my favourites is the Nikon 50mm prime lens. It’s fantastic for portraits and detailed images throwing out the background creating stunning bokeh. What Sian’s customers say “Your amazing photographs left us speechless. Our album is truly amazing and is far and beyond what we had hoped for! Everyone we have shown it to has been so impressed with the quality and creativity of the photos. The photos bring back all the emotions of the day, our laughter, tears and joy. We couldn’t have asked for better! Thank you so so much!” Hannah & Mark Davies

What do you think you bring to a shoot that others do not? My passion for what I do — definitely. Taking photographs is not just a job, but a huge part of my life and makes me the person that I am.

MUMMEBABY

Photograph by www.siantrenberth.co.uk

Tatiana Mela BA, RM, IBCLC talks to us about the care and support she provides.

Is it just about the mothers? It’s also about the partners who are vital and whose participation is invaluable. Who better to provide relief and give care and support throughout pregnancy and childbirth than a loving partner? It is a family event and all of my workshops and care packages are designed to include the partner, father or member of the family and empower them with knowledge and techniques for this unique role. I can design a programme so that your individual needs and expectations are met.

Each year thousands of babies are safely born in the hands of midwives and doctors within the NHS but still many women have fears and anxieties around their expectations of giving birth and are looking for alternatives. Having a baby is such an important event in any woman’s life, what’s needed is peace of mind, support and understanding during pregnancy, birth and the period immediately after. Mummebaby aims to complement the existing care provision for women and help the smooth transition from being a couple to becoming the beautiful family you always wanted.

Images courtesy of www.fotolia.com

What can you provide for the expectant mother? Mummebaby can provide a range of support throughout pregnancy, birth and during the postnatal period. Running a range of workshops and care packages, such as Hypnobirthing, Pregnancy Massage, Partners Sharing Pregnancy, Infant Feeding, Tongue Tie assessment, treatment and follow up; Baby Massage, Antenatal and Postnatal exercise and relaxation classes. What is Hypnobirthing and why do more and more women opt for this? Hypnobirthing is an enjoyable and informative childbirth education programme that teaches deep relaxation, visualisation and selfhypnosis.Being physically and psychologically prepared promotes a calmer pregnancy and a safer, easier and more comfortable birth. The benefits include shorter birthing without fear, more comfort and control over your body and your birth, reduced chances for medical interventions, highly energized mums following birth, stronger bonding with your baby and a valued birthing companion. Hypnobirthing babies are getting higher APGAR scores; they do not cry but smile straight from birth and have better sleeping and feeding behaviours. 25

What are your qualifications? I am a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and BA Physical Culture and Sports. I provide comprehensive midwifery care alongside that of my NHS work to women in Cardiff and the surrounding areas. I am a private Lactation Consultant in Infant Feeding and Tongue tie Specialist in Wales and South West England and can offer professional advice and support to new mothers and these practices are covered by the Medical Deference Union (MDU). The care received from me is truly personalised, supportive and informative. All your needs and desires will be discussed and respected. What advice would you give to future parents? Love and communicate with your unborn baby right from the day you know you are pregnant. Be positive about the way you look and your body changes as pregnancy advances. You conceive in love, you can give birth in love! Make healthy choices - it is the best investment in your life and the future generation! We’ve always loved the Algarve but have never ventured too far west - so when the opportunity arose to take a well earned break in Sagres, we jumped at the chance.

Point Break Our destination was the very swish five-star Martinhal Hotel and Resort and, after particularly smooth flight courtesy of the easyJet crew, we touched down in Faro.

As we were flying late evening, we had arranged a transfer with Martinhal in advance so, being quite tired, were very relieved to be driven the 90 minute journey to the resort. Arriving at night, it was impossible to appreciate our surroundings until the next morning. Wow! We awoke to a stunning panoramic view of the beach and Sagres harbour beyond. We had booked room and breakfast for the seven days and what a breakfast - fresh fruit, Cava, coffee, cooked breakfast and pastries aplenty. We were certainly spoiled for choice. Good food is something Martinhal does particularly well. There are three restaurants offering something to suit most tastes and all are child-friendly. That’s the other thing Martinhal excels at – it’s baby/ toddler/child-friendly resort with minding service and superb facilities – there’s even a room that caters for teenagers where they can ‘hang out’ and play computer

games, surf the internet safely or watch movies and if they want to get out, the beach is fantastic. The village of Sagres is a fifteen minute walk along the beach and has a good selection of restaurants but, really, Martinhal has pretty much everything you need. We did venture into Lagos (a 30 minute drive east) one day. It’s a bigger, busier town and has much to offer (check out the online Travel Life feature for more information). We chose Martinhal because we wanted a week of chillaxing. We didn’t particularly want to explore too much and, because

“ We chose Martinhal because we wanted a week of chillaxing.” of Martinhal’s almost self-contained nature, it was the perfect resort for this (they have a great pool with a bar!). Had we wanted to be more active, we could have been. There’s a surf school on the beach where you can hire a surfboard or windsurfer and even a kayak. In Sagres, there’s a dive school on the harbour and there are regular fishing and dolphin/whale watching trips. Watch out for the breeze, it’s very cooling and can catch out unwary sunbathers (it caught us out on day one). We loved our time at Martinhal and, if you love the Algarve, this is one area you should definitely visit.

When Mandy and John Davies first laid eyes on Crossways House, they knew it was where they wanted to live with their family. We chat to Mandy about why they have now decided it’s time to move on to another phase in their lives.

Crossways House We still rent out apartments for holiday lets, which is a trouble-free and pleasant way of creating a reliable income source, utilising the space that Crossways House provides and even making new friends and contacts along the way. Does the house have a history? It dates back to the seventeenth century. There have been many restorations in its long life so we are not exactly sure of what happened when. What we do know is that it has been in private hands most of its existence, except between the 1930s and 60s when it was a children’s orthopaedic hospital and that a major restoration took place lasting four years and completed in 1921. How long have you lived at the property? We bought Crossways House fourteen years ago when, having lived in the southeast and overseas for many years, we returned home to South Wales with our sons. What attracted you to it? It was a sunny day and this fascinating, historic house was crying out for attention. We had not been looking for a property of this size, but we fell in love with it on sight. We had restored and renovated houses before and were excited at the prospect of bringing this lovely building back to life.

When did you start up your business? Almost immediately, the house needed money spending on it; windows, roof work, bathrooms... a long, long list so an added income was going to be very helpful for a while. Within two weeks we were hosting our first guests. What does Crossways House offer? This is a beautiful and tranquil spot and the house has fantastic features and a rich history. Anyone buying Crossways House has masses of options, whether they just want a large, private and elegant family home or wish to run a business here.

32

What have you enjoyed most about living at Crossways House? Its beauty, its sense of calm and its fantastic location close to Cowbridge (we are just 1 mile from the High Street) and just 12 miles from Cardiff. The Vale is a stunning area. Where else could you have a rural, peaceful environment, near to a spectacular coastline, within a short trip of the mountains of the Brecon National Park whilst enjoying the facility of a vibrant and modern capital city right on your doorstep? Perfect. The house and grounds are extensive, we have over six acres of private grounds, which makes it a very peaceful place to be.

“ This is a beautiful and tranquil spot and the house has fantastic features and a rich history.” Why have you decided to sell? We have been living here for over fourteen years - the longest we have spent anywhere, and we need to look at other opportunities and experiences whilst we can. We can’t imagine living anywhere else and will sorely miss this lovely place, but life moves on. What are your plans for the future? Travel and maybe some other restoration projects in time. What is the asking price? It’s on the market for £1,550,000 Who are the agents? Watts and Morgan of Cowbridge. To find out more contact Rhys Gould on 01446 776944. To arrange a view or for more information, please contact Watts and Morgan 55 High St, Cowbridge CF71 7EA 01446 773 500 or 01446 775 757 cowbridge@wattsandmorgan.co.uk www.wattsandmorgan.co.uk 33

With so many gyms and personal trainers available promising weight loss and body transformations, how does one know which one to choose? We chat to Danielle Beck, a happy and satisfied customer of Jake Downes, Optimum U Personal Training, Cardiff on why she thinks she made the right choice.

Tried & Tested

How did you hear about Optimum U Personal Training? I was referred to Jake by a friend who told me some basic details about his ethos and attitude to training and it really struck a chord with me so I arranged to meet Jake to discuss what I was looking to achieve from my training.

Is it hard work? Yes it’s hard, but I haven’t had a moment when I wished I wasn’t doing it. Jake makes my training programme enjoyable, yet tough enough to know I am making that difference I need to.

Why did you feel the need to go? I knew I needed a change of lifestyle. I thought it may have been a detox for a while but I am now hooked.

Is Jake a good personal trainer in your opinion? Jake is first class in every way. My training programme is always challenging, fun and stimulating. He monitors my progress and makes sure my technique is the best it can be. He is always on hand for advice on nutrition and offers me the support and motivation I have needed. Training with Jake has turned my whole perspective around. Not only have I seen physical benefits from training with him but also I am a stronger more confident person. He made me realise that anything is possible and applying that through my life has changed my perspective forever.

How many times a week do you go? Three to four.

Do you think it’s value for money? Absolutely.

Why did you choose Optimum for your training needs? I was looking for a whole change of lifestyle. I didn’t want training to be a fad. I wanted it to become part of my day-to-day life. When I met Jake there was no question that he had the knowledge, expertise and passion that I was looking for in a personal trainer.

35

Have you seen results? Yes, like I never thought possible. I have trained for a significant part of my life but never seen any changes in my body. Now though I have really noticed the changes in how I look and feel. This is not something I will ever give up now. Would you recommend Optimum U Personal Training to friends and colleagues? Without a doubt.
