Gower Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Wales for the people of Swansea, Mumbles and Gower. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. WELCOME
Welcome to the latest issue of Gower Life. Whether you’re fortunate enough to live here or just passing through, you’ll find some great features inside and, hopefully, discover some of the areas hidden gems. As you’ve probably realised by now, we love independent businesses so we champion them whenever possible. We’d love your feedback too. Where do you eat? Do you have a favourite café? Which boutiques are you shopping in? It’s all about supporting local. Talking about food, we’ve got some fabulous eateries in this issue plus a great feature on Riverford so you too can ‘Live Life On The Veg’ as they eloquently put it. Organic is certainly the way to go and we are, ultimately, what we eat. I’ve featured a few of my favourite things on page 18, but if you have some too, we’d love to hear about them. We’d also love to hear from you if you’d like to contribute. We’re always looking for great stories or perhaps you are a photographer that would like your work showcased; please drop us a line.
Job opportunities We’re currently expanding our sales team across south east Wales, so if you have media sales experience (perhaps radio or advertising), please get in touch. Call us on 0845 130 6452. We hope you have a great summer. See you again soon. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk 07766 106 701

Getting married is probably the one of most important days of a woman’s life. One which she will remember for the rest of her life. Along with choosing the perfect wedding dress, the perfect venue is high on the agenda. Amy and Danny Hole chose Fairyhill for their wedding day. They say every picture tells a story. We will let the pictures do their bit while Amy’s words do the rest.
A FAIRY TALE WEDDING When did you get married? We got married on Saturday 21st July.
How and where did he propose? He proposed during a trip to New York back December 2016, it was such a shock and beyond romantic. I mean you can’t get a better location than Central Park on a magical winter’s day in New York City! Why did you choose Fairyhill? The venue is actually very close to our hearts, Danny and I met when I started working for the Oldwalls Collection as an event coordinator back in 2014. He was bar manager at the time but, what’s more, his dad is one of the owners of the company! We always said we wouldn’t get married at Oldwalls as that’s where we fell in love and we’d want somewhere different, so when the company bought Fairyhill is was the perfect choice. A stunning venue injected with the Oldwalls magic! Family links aside, Fairyhill only reopened in March following a major transformation into a fully-fledged wedding venue, the K Room especially designed to host wedding receptions is one of the most magnificent rooms I’ve ever seen, think of a glass sphere surrounded by stunning woodland, you really do feel like you’re up in the trees!
Did you use their wedding planner? Fairyhill provide their own in-house team of expert wedding coordinators so we didn’t need to. The team were amazing, their attention to details is second to none.
Did you use their caterers? Yes. Oldwalls venues are renowned for offering first class food and it didn’t disappoint. On the day our guests feasted on a lavish five course meal with most guests saying it was the best food they’d ever had at a wedding. Where did you get your dress? From Allison Jayne bridal, the team there were great and helped me pick a stunning dress by PRONOVIAS. Where did the groom/groomsmen get their outfits from? Dyfed Menswear. How was the day? It was incredible; even better than we could have ever imagined. It was a glorious sunny day meaning the guests could take full advantage of the terrace, we feel very privileged to have had all our friends and family celebrate with us in one of the most magical locations in Wales. It was also a really proud moment for Danny’s dad to be able to host his son’s wedding in his own place. 6
Where did you go on honeymoon? Well, we’ve just had a baby boy so don’t want to go too far, so we’re off on a family holiday to Gran Canaria this September. How would you sum up the whole experience? The best day of our lives! About Fairyhill The iconic grade two listed Georgian property reopened as an exclusive wedding and special events venue in March following a major refurbishment project which included the build of its magnificent function space, The K Room. The venue is fast becoming renowned as one of the best in Wales thanks to its 24acre Gower Garden and stunning interiors. Fairyhill is operated by award winning specialists, The Oldwalls Collection. When some restaurants declare their food as ‘locally sourced’ they can often mean that it comes from within a hundred mile radius; whereas Quay Three’s locally sourced food originates much closer to home as this delicious restaurant overlooks the very waters the Swansea Fisherman collect their catch from.
QUAY THREE
First opened in 2014 and situated in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter, Quay Three sets itself apart from any and all contenders thanks to its rustic aesthetic, quality service, and breathtaking dishes. Their extremely fresh fish, netted from the very waters it overlooks, has garnered a lot of praise from customers, both returning and first timers, who have been simply blown away by the outstanding quality of the food available on their menu. Speaking of menus, the minds behind this restaurant have gone above and beyond with their mouth-watering selection of dishes; in addition to offering everything from sea bass to scallops, Quay Three has recently released a brand new Summer Lunch and Weekday Menu.
With the option of enjoying one or two courses, the new menu is stuffed to the gills with exquisite dining options. For Starters you can choose from delicious teasers such as salt and peppered calamari, mussels, or confit Asian duck salad; swiftly followed by a list of main meals including 10oz ribeye steak, 8oz hand pressed beef burger, prawns in a saffron and chive risotto, or a whole plaice baked in garlic butter.
“Their extremely fresh fish, netted from the very waters it overlooks.” If that wasn’t enough Quay Three also offer a Sunday lunch between 12pm and 4pm that offers all of your favourite meats alongside duck fat roasted potatoes, honey roasted parsnips, roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese, a Yorkshire pudding, and some rich Quay Three gravy. 12
Not satisfied with this wonderful new list of delicious food, Quay Three are also preparing for this year’s Beaujolais Day with a unique selection of food for only £24.95 for two courses, with the added option of bottomless Prosecco for only £15 a head for full tables. With confit leg of duck and pan fried hake headlining the menu of the day’s wine-based celebrations, Quay Three continue to prove how much dedication that have to making sure that every dish served leaves the customer beaming with satisfied joy. If you want veg that’s full of flavour, organic and ethically produced, then Riverford Organic Farmers could be the company for you. Let Liam and Adriana McNally tell you why they chose to…
LIVE LIFE ON THE VEG What made you want to work with Riverford Organic Farmers? We believe in the ethos and core values that are the foundation of everything that happens at Riverford. We were both working in jobs where we were fundamentally unfulfilled and working with Riverford to promote organic farming and ethical business was exactly the change that we were both looking for. Oh, and we love the wonderful taste of the grown-forflavour veg! Why should customers choose you and Riverford over buying “organic” produce from supermarkets? We choose the varieties of veg that we grow for flavour and not cosmetic perfection. We can tell you exactly where it comes from and you can even come and see it growing. Our veg comes straight from the farm to you, not via packers and distribution centres. Because your veg comes in one of our reusable and recyclable boxes we are able to cut down on packaging, using only what is necessary to preserve the quality of the produce while we deliver it to your home for free.
By working with our growers over the long term, we are able to offer them a level of security that they would rarely get from the supermarkets. Looking after farmers, staff, animals, customers and the environment has been at the heart of what we do since day one, and will continue to be. Tell us about the range of products that you offer? We are great believers in sticking to our onions and doing what we do well - growing great-tasting fruit and veg. However, if we are trying to save trips to the supermarket and get the most out of our delivery vans, it makes sense to deliver more per trip. We offer a whole range of fruit and veg to top up your box and you can also get meat (often reared on the same farm where the veg is grown), eggs, milk, cream and yoghurt from the Riverford dairy, organic wine, beer, spirits, cheese, bread, and quite a lot more. All organic, much of it from the Riverford Farm Shop and mostly from local suppliers. Are your products certified organic by the Soil Association? All our vegetables are grown under Soil Association certification, meaning that they are grown to exacting standards and stringently inspected. 22
The letter of organic law means avoiding pesticides and chemicals, but we see organic as going beyond this and being about working with nature rather than against it, ensuring the way we grow and operate is sustainable in every way. What are your most popular products at this time of year? Summer is a wonderful time for our own farm and our UK growers. In July we have superb broad beans, radishes and new potatoes. August welcomes golden corn, for the best corn on the cob, with great broccoli and carrots. September will bring wonderful chard, courgettes, fennel (a personal favourite!) and peppers. Our customers delight in the changing seasons and the variety they bring to our boxes. Eating with the seasons is a joy that we work hard to promote and our wide product range helps to make this achievable. What do you believe are the real health benefits of eating organic produce? Essentially, organic food offers us more of the good stuff, and less of the bad. Organic produce has been shown to have much higher nutritional quality.
The evidence from two recent UK studies show clearly that organic food is high in antioxidants and low in toxic metals and pesticides. GM (genetically modified) is banned and switching to organic food is the best way to avoid exposure to pesticides. In terms of the health of our environment, organic farmers are helping to look after our wildlife by managing and maintaining habitats, which is a vital part of a successful organic farm. On average, plant, insect and bird life is 50% more abundant on organic farms. Organic farms are also home to 30% more species on average.
Is eating organic affordable? The obvious answer when thinking about price, is that organic is more expensive than non-organic. However, what it really comes down to is how our decisions impact on our own health and wellbeing, how they affect the environment, and what kind of relationship we want with the people who grow our food. The truth is that the much of real cost of non-organic farming is hidden, not understood or ignored. Given all the evidence demonstrating the individual, environmental and social benefits, it seems we can’t afford not to support organic farming.
But, most importantly, carrots taste like carrots again! Our food has flavour and, even after delivering hundreds of boxes every week, we’re still excited to come home to our box. What do you love most about what you do? We believe passionately in the values and ethos that we all work hard to promote, and this keeps us going through the early-mornings and the long days. More important than this though, are our customers. Meeting old and new customers whether at the front door when we deliver or at shows, festivals and events really does keep us smiling and we love helping them to Live Life on the Veg!
“We are great believers in sticking to our onions.” What geographical areas do you cover? We are lucky to live and work in the most beautiful part of the UK! We cover the whole of the Western half of South Wales. We deliver right across the Vale, from Peterstone and Barry in the East, to Southerndown and Ogmore in the West and everywhere between. We also cover Swansea and Gower, and all of our beautiful valleys, from the Swansea valley in the West, to Rhondda in the East and everything in between.
What difference has eating organic made to your lives? We’ve always enjoyed good food and cooking but since switching to organic fruit and veg about seven years ago, we have paid increasing attention to our diet and how what we eat affects our daily life, energy levels and wellbeing. As well as these more direct benefits, taking control of your nutrition and eating habits helps to build confidence to improve other aspects of your life. 23

Have you been trying the same approach, on several occasions and the result remain the same? Are you tired of feeling how you’re feeling and want to make the change? Do you want to identify the cause of your symptoms? Then Angharad Evans, Natural Therapy treatment may be the answer you’ve been looking for.
A NGHAR AD E VANS AIDING YOU BACK TO HEALTH WITH NATURAL THERAPIES
Who are you and what do you do? I am a fully qualified allergy and nutritional therapist for over two years. My goal is to provide personalised allergy and nutritional therapies to aid the body back to health. How do you achieve this? This involves non-invasive assessment and an evaluation of environmental contaminators that may cause/ exacerbate a physical illness. I then provide comprehensive treatment to enable my patients to lead a healthy life, without needing to rely or reduce the need for traditional medication. Where are you based? My surgery is based in the heart of Penarth where I offer treatment in a professional, friendly and private environment. What conditions do you treat? I have experience of treating a variety of physical conditions through noninvasive investigations and pragmatic allergy and nutritional therapies. The list of conditions are included on my ‘Conditions’ webpage, however, this is not a comprehensive list and I welcome any potential patients with concerns to contact me to discuss their condition further.
There is no obligation to make a booking by contacting me, I would encourage any potential patients to discuss their needs with me and we can agree next steps. If I feel my treatment would not be suitable for your condition I can recommend alternatives. What does the treatment entail? The treatment will involve an initial two hour consultation which is held in my private surgery. This consultation will entail a non-invasive physical assessment, a discussion about your symptoms and an evaluation of the personal and household products that you use. This will enable me to accurately diagnose your condition and formulate a treatment plan that is tailored towards your needs and takes into account environmental factors. The medical profession focuses on symptoms, this typically ignores the cause of a condition which can be exacerbated or caused by toxins from our life style and habits. I believe in adopting a holistic approach to healing - by assessing my patients and identifying the toxins which are affecting them. 24
I offer a natural solution to their condition to promote long term health. What are your qualifications? I studied Allergy Therapy at Prestberries Holistic Centre, Ledbury, Gloucestershire where I achieved an Allergy Therapy Diploma (distinction). I also have a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy with Alternative Training in Stroud. Is the treatment suitable for children and babies? Yes, my patients have included babies, toddlers, children and teenagers and I have successfully treated their conditions. Like adults, many physical conditions can be attributed to toxins, especially as minors are more susceptible to the negative effect of these factors. With over 20 years as a classroom teacher, I can engage with children of all ages to diagnose and develop an effective treatment schedule. Please see my review page for testimonials.
“I am committed to providing a personalised, holistic treatment.”
How does the process work? My personalised treatment involves active collaboration between me and my patients. I will provide you with clear and straightforward instructions, but you will need to show commitment and determination. I will support you throughout your treatment, but you need to be dedicated to changing your habits (diet, lifestyle, behaviour) in order to restore your body back to health.
However, this treatment entails patients taking responsibility for their health by making changes to their habits, you cannot simply take a passive approach. For allergy and nutritional therapy to work, patients need to show commitment and determination. My patients need to take on my advice and encouragement and commit to the changes if they are to see positive results.
How do I make an appointment or discuss my needs? If my treatments are of interest to you or if you would like additional information, simply contact me by e-mail evansangharad@icloud.com or call me 07739 210291
Whilst we may live in an era of immediate results, our body does not work like this. My treatment will take time and effort. If you’re prepared to make changes, then this therapy is right for you. If you’re not prepared and want to take a pill and carry on doing what you’re doing, then no this therapy is not for you.
If you’re willing to take action, I am here to coach and guide you through to health.
n Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), bloating & digestive issues n Gall Stones n Arthritis, Gout & Raynauds Syndrome n Thyroid issues n Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) & Fibromyalgia n Endometriosis & Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) n Eczema n Wheat intolerance n Lactose intolerance n Anxiety n Diabetes n Generally unwell
My treatment is a lifestyle change that will restore you back to health, not a quick fix that will not address the cause of your symptoms. Does allergy and nutritional therapy actually work? Put simply, yes it does! There is extensive research that has shown the effectiveness of allergy and nutritional therapies in treating an array of common physical symptoms.
How much will the treatment cost? In order for me to make an accurate diagnosis and create a tailored package of treatment I recommend my patients make 3 initial appointments, with a fortnight between each session in order for my patients to allow my treatment to take effect. Further treatment costs will be discussed on a case by case basis. I am committed to providing a personalised, holistic treatment for my patients to recover in the quickest time possible. Fancy creating this mouth-watering dish using the fresh, seasonal and always organic produce, delivered free to your home from Riverford Organic Farmers? Here’s how...
SUMMER RECIPE NEW POTATO & CHORIZO HASH WITH ASPARAGUS & EGG
You can either fry or poach your eggs for this recipe. Use the freshest eggs for making poached eggs, so the white seals around the yolks (adding the vinegar helps with this too). INGREDIENTS n 600g new potatoes, scrubbed & cut in half, or in quarters if larger n sunflower or vegetable oil, for frying & roasting n 250g asparagus, trimmed n Splash of sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar n ½ tsp smoked paprika n 1 red onion, finely diced n 2 cooking chorizo sausages (200–250g), skinned & meat crumbled n Handful of finely chopped parsley n Splash of white wine vinegar or cider vinegar, if poaching your eggs n 2 eggs n Salt and black pepper METHOD 1. Heat the oven to 210˚C/Gas 7 or heat a cast-iron griddle pan over a high heat.
2. Put the potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to a boil and cook for 12–15 minutes, until tender. Drain and lightly crush with a potato masher or fork. While the potatoes are cooking, if you want to poach your eggs, put another pan of water on to heat to a bare simmer (no bubbles). 3. Toss the asparagus in 1 tablespoon of oil in a baking dish. Add a splash of sherry or red wine vinegar, the smoked paprika and season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for 8–12 minutes (depending on the thickness), until tender.
6. If poaching your eggs, add a good splash of vinegar to the simmering pan of water. Crack the eggs into individual ramekins or small bowls. Use a spoon to swirl the water so it looks like a whirlpool. Gently drop the eggs into the water, one at a time, and poach for 3 minutes. Alternatively, fry the eggs in a little oil to your liking. Sprinkle the eggs with a little extra salt before serving on the potatoes and asparagus. Find out more about Riverford on pages 40 and 41. www.riverford.co.uk/recipes
4. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and cook slowly for 10 minutes to soften without colouring. If it starts to catch, add a splash of water and reduce the heat. Add the chorizo, increase the heat slightly and fry for 4–5 minutes, to cook the chorizo through. 5. Stir in the potatoes and warm through. Stir in the parsley and season to taste. 26

Kaely Backland of Usk welcomed us into her beautiful home and told us why she chose to work with Alexander James Bifold. How did you hear about Alexander James? I wanted some beautiful bifold doors. I researched online and found the Alexander James Bifolds website. I liked the look of it. It looked very professional and gave me the confidence to give the company a call. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? They came across very professional, both on the phone and when their representative, Andrew, initially came out to talk about their products and service before and after installation. What work did Alexander James carry out for you? They installed a set of bi-folding doors with four doors which open on to the garden. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? I already had PVC bi folding doors which were a substandard product and not fit for purpose. After talking with Andrew from Alexander James, and going with his advice to choose their aluminium product, I couldn’t be happier. The doors are not only a better quality product but, aesthetically, they are more pleasing - especially since I could almost choose any colour I wanted and, finally, the big plus - they actually work! Before I hardly bothered opening the PVC doors but now I use them all the time. I was so pleased with the work from this company that I have been back to fit all new windows throughout the property as well!

Boasting one of the largest showrooms in South Wales, Enterprise2000 is an independent outlet specialising in kitchens, appliances and most recently, fitted bedrooms. With the company having gone from strength to strength over the last few years, we recently met up with their on-hand Kitchen Designer, Emma Reed to find out more.
ENTERPRISE 2000 LOCAL, PREMIUM & INDEPENDENT
Award winning - Emma Reed
Linear handleless units
Established over 20 years ago, Enterprise2000 was bought out by the current three partners who have been running the business for 14 years; they were the ones who saw an opportunity to invest in a fitted kitchen department to run alongside the kitchen appliance side of the business. Although discussing business, when talking to Emma, you can feel her passion for what she does and why she does it. The mantra on which they run the company is quality at affordable prices to give people the kitchen of their dreams, and this goal is almost palpable in everything that we talked about. Why choose Enterprise2000? When asked what makes them unique, Emma lit up with enthusiasm. Her answer was three-fold: premium quality products at affordable prices, a dedicated team of knowledgeable experts, and their firstclass customer service and after sales care.
“ Quality at affordable prices.”
Affordable Quality Working with other local companies, Enterprise2000 is able to obtain highquality products for their kitchen and bedroom ranges, as opposed to multi-nationals who are limited to what they can purchase. We stock and supply top brand appliances which are competitively priced and matched with online companies including AO.com, John Lewis and Currys. This allows Emma to get the best products and bargains for her customers. A Knowledgeable Team Made up of a dedicated team of experts, Enterprise2000 is regularly complimented on their knowledgeable and friendly staff. In fact, it is one of the reasons that the company gets referred so much and attracts customers in their droves. Emma says, “we believe the strength of any business is with its staff and we are so lucky with ours! Not only are they local and have been with us for years, but they also attend regular training with suppliers so they know everything about the appliances and they keep up with current trends. We couldn’t ask for more!” 32
Superb Customer Care Most multi-national companies have an online call centre with customer service teams, but with Enterprise2000, you will deal with one of the key team members directly to get your potential issue resolved. Emma prides herself on her customer care, stating that they offer above and beyond service from the initial conversation right up to after sales care. In fact, she said that customers always comment on how easy it is to work with Enterprise and how much they love that they can order appliances at home online and have it turn up when expected without being damaged or faulty. Enterprise2000: The Kitchens With one of the largest showrooms in South Wales, it’s hard to imagine that Emma was teaching herself kitchen design just eight years ago. It’s true, however, and with her partners, she has since built the business into the success it is today where the majority of her work comes from referrals. As humbling as she finds this, the sheer amount of referrals reflect just how unique and first-hand the service at Enterprise is.

Testimonials “Great Ideas” Re-designed our kitchen with the best expertise and ideas from the wonderful and patience of Emma. Great ideas with types of appliances and first-class prices. Follow up assistance and support always readily available. Roy
“ We believe the strength of any business is with its staff and we are lucky with ours.”
“First Class Service” Amazing kitchen bought by my in-laws. First class service from start to finish. No hesitation in recommending Emma and her team. Thank you. Lisa Cranbrook Platinum
While it is common in the kitchen industry for staff to work on a commission basis, pushing their kitchens at higher prices to earn a higher commission, Emma’s philosophy is completely different: “I work with whatever the client’s budget allows, offering a better quality kitchen than most other suppliers in our area to help their dream become a reality.” Offering a full range of premium quality kitchens and high-end appliances, Enterprise2000 works directly with other independent companies, such as Symphony Kitchens, the UK’s leading manufacturer, and the Cosentino Group, the design leaders in surfaces with its brands, Silestone, Dekton and Sensa. This means that they can offer the best for their clients, with each kitchen being built new using premium products and new premium-quality quartz work surfaces are available up to six months before any other showroom. Enterprise2000: The Bedrooms Emma was incredibly proud and excited about Enterprise’s recent launch of newly fitted bedroom displays in their
showroom; customers can now see the modern Symphony Urbano Range in all its glory alongside the elegant and stunning Laura Ashley Collection. As you can imagine, the news of the new Laura Ashley bedroom ranges are spreading and they are already extremely popular just a few months into their launch. Obviously, this excitement is due to the exceptional products themselves, but it may also be due to the massive social media giveaway where someone won a dressing table worth up to £1,500! Again, Enterprise works alongside other well-esteemed local companies such as The Rocking Chair that supply the beds for the displays and designer Elizabeth Styles for the fabrics. Emma prides herself on this, stating that “we love working with other independent retailers to offer the whole package to suit our clients’ needs and requirements.” From our discussion with Emma, we could see that Enterprise2000 is much more than a local company that offers high-quality kitchens, appliances and 33
bedrooms at great prices. Made up of a dedicated team of experts, Enterprise aims to work with their clients on their design journey from dream to reality, helping them to make the right decisions for them. Meeting Emma herself and talking about her exceptional customer service and intimate partnerships with other local companies, it is no surprise at all that she won Business Woman of the Year recently for growth expansion. We couldn’t think of someone who deserves it more and it is a testament to her incredible work ethic.
