WELCOME Ah how quickly autumn comes around. Soon the nights will be drawing in and we’ll all be thinking of what this season means to us – warmer clothing, getting the garden prepared for the spring, perhaps changing our interior furnishings to richer autumnal colours and getting out that crockpot in readiness for those warming stews and casseroles.

If you haven’t changed your wardrobe from summer to winter yet, then our fashion features will give you the inspiration you should need. Pen and paper at the ready and that goes for all you male Vale Life readers as well as you ladies! Now is also a good time to spruce up your home or give it a whole new look altogether. What better way to do this than a new kitchen? We chat to a couple of Vale Life readers who did just that and it changed their lives. If you’re happy with where you are but need extra space, then what about adding another room by way of an orangery? A real change from a conservatory, these rooms can bring the garden in and take the living space out. Hands up who hates having their photograph taken but would like natural shots of either yourself, your family or even your animals? Let Maryanne Hawes of Light and Day Photography bring out the best in you and yours. Find out more on page 32. We’ve also got a bumper feature on the market town of Cowbridge. This is definitely a destination town where you can shop until you drop and find something that’s not on the High Street. I hope you enjoy this autumn issue and hope you get one before they all go! See you in the winter. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor jennifer@valelife.co.uk

“Ann and her staff work on building lasting relationships with all new customers.”

❧ 6 ❧

Why is it that we never seem to appreciate what’s on our own doorstep? Often, we find that visitors and tourists from further afield know more about our area than we do, because they take the time to learn about it. It might go some way to explain why Ann Bryl, owner of Bryl’s Boutique in Barry, continues to see an increasing stream of customers walk through her doors.

HIGH STREET CHIC

Take, for instance, the High Street – home to Bryl’s Boutique. It is a small street in a residential area that enjoys a reputation for independent and niche shops. You can shop at leisure and in a calmer frame of mind.

Someone else might be wearing it! She’s thought of that, which is why they stock only a limited number of pieces in each size so the chance of you seeing someone else in something bought at Bryl’s is unlikely.

Let’s be honest, women are busy people and at times things can get a little stressful; so Ann has provided the perfect antidote for busy women, who love going to the shops instead of shopping online. She’s listened to the problems women face when choosing clothes and then gone a long way to provide a solution. Let’s take a look.

I get confused with all the choice! Think how many times you walk in and out of stores, few of which are not suited to your style and then you walk away with something you don’t like after walking around for hours. This is frustrating for many women, which is why Bryl’s has been very discerning about stocking quality mid-range designer labels such as Ted Baker, French Connection, Great Plains, UGG Australia, Nougat, Sandwich, Traffic People, Darling, BiBi, the phenomenally popular FitFlop boots and Suzy Smith bags.

In the big city, I’m just a number! In other shops maybe, but not here; regular customers are known by name and Ann and her staff work on building lasting relationships with customers.

There is enough choice but without being overwhelming. Stylish shoppers look for the details and cuts that are synonymous with certain designers and choose them for their style and wearability. What’s more, two of the team are talented style consultants which makes for an altogether easier and special trip. Help - I work all day! Out of hours appointments are available for those who can’t shop during office hours. All you need to do is give Ann a call to arrange a time to visit. ❧ 7 ❧

Will I be able to get all I need for my autumn wardrobe? All good wardrobes start with quality basic pieces, peppered with colour and accessories. Bryl’s stocks a varied range of stylish pieces to make up some fabulous outfits and add to your existing wardrobe. Ann has been in the retail and fashion industry for over twenty five years and someone with her experience can offer objective advice on how to interpret the key looks for the season. When she gets to know what suits you better, she will be able to let you know when new seasonal pieces arrive in the shop. When someone has taken this much trouble to provide the local community with stylish clothing, service that is second to none and a lovely shop, it would be rude to go elsewhere!

Visitors returning this autumn have discovered that it is worth travelling a little bit further for good service and stylish clothing. That and the fact that Barry has undergone a multi-million pound regeneration programme to take it well into the future. In fact some parts of the town are, now, quite trendy.

Boutiques are expensive and pushy! Small boutiques can appear intimidating because there are fewer people to hide behind and women feel an obligation to buy. At Bryl’s, however, the staff do everything they can to welcome customers and no one should walk away with something they are not sure about – if in doubt Ann would prefer you to say that and return once you are sure. Bryl’s has put some serious research into the needs of women and the brands they stock. It has been brought together in a beautiful space and at prices cheaper than big department stores.

Ann likes to know where her customers come from and why. They explain that they have it on good recommendation and they prefer an unhurried pace of shopping and the personal touch.

DINAS POWYS

Dinas Powys displays real soul I happened to be passing through the lovely vilage of Dinas Powys recently, on a rather wet August day, when I came across a group of people tending the flower beds and cleaning the pathways. I was popping into the Post Office and then on to the rather excellent Wild Blackberry deli for a spot of lunch but, before doing so, I thought I’d enquire why this seemingly mad bunch of people were out working in the rain. They enthusiastically explained that they were part of a community group called Soul In Dinas and got together to improve the village and generally do good works. So, if you’re interested in joining in to make Dinas a better place, get in touch with us here at Vale Life and we’ll pass on your details. Congratulations to the Soul in Dinas team for doing such a wonderful job! P O R T H C AW L

St. John’s School makes the grade All we can hope is to give our children the best start in life. We give them what we can, when we can and based on the information we have at that time. Yet we can never guarantee how outside influences will affect them. St. John’s Independent School in Porthcawl offers an educational environment in which its pupils can thrive. Recently they announced that 42% of their GCSE results were at Grades A* or A, compared to the national average of 22%. They have demonstrated that not only do able pupils achieve high grades but also children who have worked extra hard to overcome difficulties have succeeded due to the supportive learning environment of the school.

I was fortunate enough to be educated privately and studied with pupils from all over the world, all walks of life and financial backgrounds. We were encouraged and empowered to nurture our talents and to play to our strengths. The longer in the tooth I get, the more I thank my parents for the chances and choices they gave me. I learned to stand on my own two feet, to communicate with people at all levels, in many circumstances, and to make informed decisions. Similarly, St. John’s recognises each pupil’s ability and allows their creative spirit to come to the fore, so that one day they will shine as adults. Some may pursue academic or creative subjects leading them to university or a chosen career path, while others excel in sports. ❧ 8 ❧

Whatever the outcome, a child who is schooled privately, will take away more than a string of qualifications. Attributes such as confidence or gaining a broad perspective on life are immeasurable and less tangible but no less important. One thing is for sure, parents don’t have all the answers and a child’s total experience of the world will be based on the support of other people. At St. John’s the teachers and staff aim to fill the gaps. What more can you ask? Poster designs are real eye-catchers! Barry opticians, Arbuthnot, set a challenge to local school children aged from nine to eleven to come up with a poster to celebrate Eye Care Week. The entries came flooding in and the winner was chosen. Tiegan Avaient received a goody bag consisting of a science museum optical illusion box set, ruler, cap, sticky bugs, stickers and a Timberland rucksack and a cheque for £100 for her school St Athan Primary. Runners up Thomas Bowen of Ysgol San Curig and Tasmin Gaiger of Barry Island Primary school also received goodie bags. The runner up schools (Barry Island and Sant Curig) each received £50.

Clean energy is money in your pocket Richard and Vanessa Adams had a 14-panel solar electricity system installed by Elltec Solar Electricity on their Morrocan-style family home in Peterston-super-Ely. When our old boiler needed replacing we decided to consider newer technologies, and felt that solar panels were the best option. As a family, we feel strongly about environmental issues and with dwindling supplies of traditional fuels we felt that making our own electricity would be a wise financial move too. Under the Clean Energy Cashback Scheme we get paid for every unit of electricity we produce. This is fixed at 41p for the first two years and index linked for 25 years. The electricity we use is free and any we don’t need is sold to an energy supplier for an extra 3p per unit. With the money we make from this, the system should pay for itself within ten years.

“The electricity we are using has little impact on the environment.”

The return can be as much as 8% higher than any savings account we have found. We added the cost of installation to our mortgage. Our existing deal was finishing and our lender was very happy to increase the amount we borrowed to pay for the solar panels. Having made the initial outlay, we should start to see our outgoings reduce. The system should produce more electricity than our five-person home uses in a year. We sourced several quotes and Elltec Solar Electricity stood out as being very knowledgeable and professional. Our house is a listed building with a flat roof so there were a few planning concerns which Elltec handled very efficiently. During installation they were exceptionally thoughtful, tidy, hard working and pleasant to have around the house. They filled out the required forms to help us receive an installation grant and advised us on the process for claiming the Clean Energy Cashback. We would highly recommend them. It feels really great to know that the electricity we are using has little impact on the environment. ❧ 9 ❧

THE WHITE MOVE The Ski Lodge has moved from its original location in Barry to a new purpose designed retail space in Cardiff Bay. Vale Life talks with Jason Jeffery about the move and the exciting new season ahead. Why the move from Barry? We’re all caffeine addicts and just had to move next door to Starbucks! In all seriousness, we’ve taken the business to an incredible new location which is a lot closer to the hub of sport and leisure in the local area Cardiff Bay. For an active sport orientated store like ours The Bay is such a perfect place to be situated. We are just around the corner from the ice rink, national pool and the new white water rafting centre. Just take a look at our new building... it's such a fantastic site that we simply had to move in and bring The Ski Lodge to the capital city. This means that the store is a lot more accessible now to a wider customer base. We have extremely loyal customers who shop with us year in year out so we didn't want to move too far from our original home in Barry, but the real benefit to all of our customers both new and existing is that we can now offer a full twelve month a year business. We are still the Ski Lodge, but now open throughout both the winter and summer months.

What can we expect from the new store? The roots of The Ski Lodge have always been in providing the very best ski and snowboard product and first class customer service. This will remain the core thread throughout the new store. It will be the Ski Lodge that has been known and loved in Barry for 25 years, but with a little capital city twist. The biggest difference is clearly a store that remains open all year. Not only will we continue to offer everything you need for a trip to the snow but we're pretty excited at the prospect of bringing you, in addition, a bigger range of lightweight technical and lifestyle wear including many products that will crossover sports.

Charity concert for the Love Elliot Trust at Bethel Baptist Church Whilst the plight of those in countries suffering from flooding and disease is constantly on the news and pulls at the heartstrings of us all, I’m also a firm believer in the idea that charity begins at home. When I heard of the fight that a very special little boy, Elliott Bailey, from Groesfaen, is still enduring, and the undying devotion of Elliott’s mother Stephanie and his father Mark, it made me realise that there are families suffering right on our doorstep who could also do with some support. Elliott has celebral palsy, the result of a Vitamin K deficiency during the first five weeks of his life. After lifesaving brain surgery, the family waited to see how his life would unfold. As Elliott develops, the lasting effects of this tragedy continue to present themselves. For Elliott to thrive, he needs continual support including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, speech, language and communication therapy, occupation therapy, portage play therapy and rebound therapy. He has been grateful for support received from two charities in providing such help, Bobath and Scope.

“It made me realise that there are families suffering right on our doorstep who could also do with some support.” As well as looking after Elliott, which is a full-time job in itself, Stephanie also has a very busy life. She regularly helps out both The Llantrisant and Pontyclun Ladies choirs as an accompanist, as well as organising and running her own childrens’ choir. On Saturday, 30th October, a concert combining the talents of the female and male choirs will take place at the Bethel Baptist Church in Pontyclun. The Llantrisant Choir have been established for more than 100 years, and the Pontyclun Ladies Choir for more than 30, and yet they have never combined in concert before. All of the proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Love Elliott Trust which helps provide medical care for Elliott. Stephanie will be accompanying the Llantrisant Choir at the concert. The internationally renowned percussionist, Simone Rebello, has agreed to be the guest artist. With tickets set at just £5, it goes without saying that the more tickets sold, the more funds would be available to help Elliott. I must say at this juncture, Stephanie doesn’t know that Vale Life has agreed to promote the event. All we can hope is that the concert is well supported and that the monies raised on ticket sales will help Elliott’s progress. For tickets to the event, please contact Julia Goodwin on 07815 300487 or David Thomas on 01443 223385

RATIONAL THINKING

When owners Steve and Claire Bloom welcome customers into their showroom at Spacefittingfurniture on Colchester Avenue in Cardiff, they’ll usually talk about designing and installing a beautiful, contemporary Rational kitchen. However, word is getting around that this stunning furniture has other uses elsewhere in the home. Vale Life talks to Steve about using Rational throughout the home. Rational is normally associated with kitchens. What drove you to install the units in other areas of the home? I see myself as a designer of kitchens first and foremost. It’s something I really enjoy designing. From the initial customer brief of what is required for their kitchen to really work for them to hearing the feedback after the work is completed, I like to feel a part of the whole process and to know that each customer’s kitchen ticks all of their needs and more. It was when Claire and I were discussing changing the design elements in our own home that I began to think about using the Rational units in other rooms.

We like the contemporary, minimalist look and the thought of following this look throughout the house. You know how these things work – we may have friends over for dinner or for coffee and they see the work that’s been done and the next thing, we’re being asked to do something similar in their home. It’s grown from this - it’s not a concept that we’ve actively sold in the showroom.

“We like the contemporary, minimalist look and the thought of following this look throughout the house.” ❧ 14 ❧

Where can the units be used? Most rooms you can think of really the office, bedroom, bathroom, lounge, dining room. I could go on. Even Rational’s own designers are amazed at some of the things I have done with their products. What makes Rational so good? Being a German brand, the quality is superb. It’s also very flexible. I can order almost anything - not just a hinged cupboard but one that lifts up, or slides open and even a bi-fold. I can also order any size panel in a range of different thicknesses. The versatility holds no bounds! It’s also very durable, so the units will look good for longer.

“The quality is superb. It’s also very flexible and very durable, so the units will look good for longer. The versatility holds no bounds.”

Taste of the East - the best in Asian cuisine Recently reviewed by Vale Life, Taste of the East in Pontyclun has gained a reputation for excellent food and is attracting a new and regular following from customers wanting delicious Chinese food. Owner Benny Wong works tirelessly to bring you the very best in South-east Asian cuisine, with Chinese, Thai and Malaysian dishes being the main focus of their menu. The choice is varied and caters for customers who prefer mild dishes, and as our reviewer was quick to point out, something a little punchier for spice-addicts! To this end, each sauce is made individually, with ingredients chosen carefully to provide the authentic flavour you would expect from a restaurant worth its salt. Food is freshly cooked and the á la carte and set menus provide fantastic choice. Their trademark Endless Banquet Oriental buffet is popular, offering value for money for a family or those who like variety. What’s more, this is no ordinary buffet as it is cooked to order and is served at your table without the need for you to leave your seat - how is that for service?

Benny has found that the buffet option is proving to be a hit with groups of people celebrating birthdays or special events; it will be ideal for Christmas celebrations and bookings are advisable to avoid disappointment.

There is ample parking outside and the mainline train station connecting Cardiff to Swansea is a two minute walk which provides a stress-free solution for customers wanting to sample the wine on offer. Day trippers will find plenty to do locally with retail parks and Leekes out-of-town store only five minutes away. After so much shopping, customers will want to take advantage of the discounted early bird buffet option between 4.30 – 7.30pm on Monday to Thursdays. A Takeaway and local delivery service is provided and the restaurant has the added bonus of being licensed to sell wine out.

New moon ushers in a new menu at La Luna Regular diners at Brookes in Pontyclun might be disappointed that their beloved purple building together with its equally imposing purple canopy has been replaced with something altogether more reserved. Fear not, the owners remain but the offering has changed and so has the name. Lunch anywhere in the Vale can be a hit and miss affair at the best of times but, to be fair to Brookes, the times I have lunched there over the years the food has been pretty good. I used to work in Llantrisant so Talbot Green was convenient for lunchtime meetings. However, I must confess to being put off by the purple building – I can’t explain why but I just was (and I wasn’t alone). Fast forward to a break in the clouds one Friday in very late August. We’re out as a family and, after doing the shopping rounds of Pontyclun and Llantrisant, we find ourselves in Talbot Green. As we passed, the change of frontage (and name) piqued my curiosity and five minutes later we’re seated. Why? Because I like the updated interior. It’s little things like the funky silver radiator near the door and the style of handwriting on the specials board. It’s changed and I like the change. We placed our orders and sat in the bay window sipping our wine and watching the world go by thinking how very nice it was.

At this point, I usually begin my analysis of our starters, followed by a competent deconstruction of our main course and then, to finish, a few choice words on why the desserts worked or didn’t. Well I’m not going to do that. I think the photographs speak volumes I’m a great believer in ‘looks good, chances are it’s going to taste good’. And, in the case of this particular meal at La Luna, it’s true. This is flavoursome char-grilled modern Mediterranean at its best and is very easy on the palate. We had a Tuna Nicoise which was perfectly cooked and honestly just melted in the mouth. Superb. And a special mention for the bread and butter pudding with home-made ice cream which, I can honestly say, was one of the best I’ve tasted in a long time. The simple truth is Talbot Green and the Vale needs La Luna. The food is great; it’s great to look at and it’s good to eat. You can tell the owners care and so should you. Restaurants like this deserve customers - it needs regulars, deserves regulars. Would I go again? Absolutely - and it’ll be soon.

“The Vale needs La Luna. The food is great, it’s great to look at and it’s good to eat.”

B RY N S A D L E R

Sunday lunch is safe in The Ivor Arms Sunday lunch is always a treat if you choose the right pub (although more and more restaurants are in on the act these days). Having not partaken of the tradition for quite a while, we decided to take the family off to The Ivor Arms in Pontyclun after hearing some good reports on the pub lunch grapevine.

I particularly liked the potatoes prepared three ways – a pleasant surprise (roast, rosti and boiled) and, thankfully, whoever had prepared the menu had resisted the urge to describe them as such.

I must confess, the reason we’d stopped doing Sunday Lunch was because it had become, all to often, a very hit or miss affair. After several disappointments where poor service and sub-standard food had been the order of the day, I was not expecting great things.

My wife had odered Leg of Duck which was so flavoursome. Perfectly crisp skin and beautifully moist meat. Our son was tucking in to the lamb and his cousin was munching his way enthusiastically through a slice of pork – both agreed the food was excellent. We had ordered child portions for them and, although they’re both twelve, the portions were more than adequate.

Our first impression of The Ivor, as it’s affectionately known locally, was a pleasant one. Tasteful paintwork and signage greet you and the car park was reasonably busy but not overly so (and free of litter – always a good sign). We entered, passing the lounge bar where some locals were enjoying their Sunday pint while reading and chatting and were shown to our seats and offered some drinks and menus. Looking around, almost two thirds of the tables were booked and every so often a new party would arrive giving the place a nice buzz but without being noisy.

This is probably a good point to mention their wine list. My wife likes a nice sauvignon and there are several on the list along with an intelligent selection of other whites and a good selection of reds. If you’re feeling in a celebratory mood, there are some sparkling wines and a Pol Roger champagne if you want to push the boat out. To be perfectly honest, at this point I was checking the prices on the blackboard. Usually ingredients of this quality, combined with cooking of this calibre, would carry a much higher price tag.

Our order duly arrived and I have to say, the presentation was excellent – the meals certainly looked good enough to eat. We all tucked in. My lamb was unbelievably tender. Melt in the mouth would describe it perfectly. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and when I say cooked I don’t mean al dente which is, more often than not, chef speak for undercooked. Beautiful carrots, green beans, peas and cauliflower. No, this was perfect. Indeed, I was half way through my meal before I realised I hadn’t reached for the condiments – this meal was perfectly seasoned straight out of the kitchen.

We finished our mains wondering what the very subtle background heat was in the gravy, but despite several requests to the waitress, chef was not giving up his secret. The gravy really was superb and might have accounted for the reason we didn’t have to season our food.

“This is pub food at its very best and I would heartily recommend it without hesitation.”

We all agreed that, so far, the food had been excellent and decided to see if the desserts were just as good. We needn’t have had any doubts. Our son played it safe with some plain vanilla ice cream and his cousin tucked in to a gorgeous sticky toffee pudding – both were devoured leaving no trace. My wife chose the Pavlova which was, in her own words, “very naughty.” I went for the Strawberry Cheesecake with cream which was really quite delicious. We rounded the meal off with a couple of lattes while the boys quietly honed their Gameboy skills. A very enjoyable lunch all round. All too often these days, Sunday Lunch just doesn’t cut the mustard. Conveyor belt, ping cuisine seems to be the norm but, thankfully, at The Ivor Arms this certainly isn’t the case. The food is, quite honestly, superb and just one mouthful tells you corners aren’t being cut. This is pub food at its very best and I would heartily recommend it without hesitation.

Divine Jewellery is heaven sent Last Christmas Divine Jewellery was the reason for many successful gift choices for my friends and family. So much so, in fact, my friend went online immediately to order more. Owners Marie Jones and Michelle Smith opened Divine, based in Cardiff Bay’s Mermaid Quay following the phenomenal success of its sister shop in Porthcawl. It seems that women have cottoned on to the constantly updated ranges of costume jewellery, which are reasonably priced, stylish and in an array of colours and textures. Marie and Michelle source their jewellery, bags, scarves and accessories from all over the world.

They recognise that some women are nervous about wearing colour, yet are prepared to experiment with accessories in every hue and shade to update an outfit. Some pieces are dramatic while others are dainty, which appeals to a cross-section of customers looking to buy gifts for friends or for themselves.

And if that’s not all, seek out the Diva bags which have been colour coded to other goodies of the same colour, making them an ideal Christmas gift. For sore tootsies after a night of partying, Butterfly Twists fold-up shoes are what every girl needs in their handbag.

For the colder months, you’ll find a choice of stunning scarves, as well as a range of Goose Island clothing. New this season is a selection of silver coloured jewellery which will add shine and drama to the winter uniform of black and grey clothes. In the event of you not having enough time to pop to the shop, the team offer jewellery events in your home, with the hostess receiving 10% of the sales on the night in goods – a perfect opportunity for a night in with your friends over a drink and nibbles. If last winter and Christmas is anything to go by, they will be inundated with bookings, so they advise you to book your date well in advance.

If individuality is your style and you refuse to follow the pack, then Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry is the place to go to celebrate your uniqueness, with its bespoke couture range of Tom Davies eyewear. Vale Life talks to Suzanne Cox, practice manager.

DESIGNER SPEC I first heard about Tom Davies from a style and image associate of mine, who, while batting her eyelashes from a pair of funky purple frames, extolled the virtues of Tom’s exclusive eyewear designs. Her specs suited her edgy style and vivacious personality perfectly.

Green with envy I contemplated having a pair made for myself with plain glass, just for the thrill of sporting a one-off creation. Be careful what you wish for though, as, three years on, I find myself in need of prescription lenses. It’s bad enough bumping into someone wearing the same outfit as you – these days you’re more likely to find someone wearing identical glasses. So, for the uninitiated, let’s explain how Arbuthnot Opticians can help you to blaze a trail and create a statement with your very own pair of bespoke specs. How did you get involved in offering the bespoke range? The Tom Davies philosophy is to supply his couture and ready-to-wear collection in conjunction with optometry specialists, through a worldwide network of quality and boutique opticians. We fitted the bill.

So, what does it involve? Customers have a consultation with us, which many have said is an experience in itself. They are guided through the consultation, during which they choose a style of frame from the Tom Davies ready-to-wear collection. We then take measurements around the eyes, face and head and these are sent to Tom’s design team who will prepare your made-to-measure frame in the workshop. We take into consideration everything about the customer, including the size of frame in proportion to their face, the way it sits on their face, right down to the materials, details and trim. Also, in order to create the right impact, we can help the customer choose the most flattering colour of frame based on their skin tone and hair colour. Wow, it sounds like a complete style session It is really. These days customers want something different, and apart from the practical reasons of having to see clearly, they want their eyewear to be more than just an accessory. They need to know that their glasses will be noticed for the right reasons and complement their look and the clothes they wear. They are making an investment into the health of their eyes and also want to look good. Describe the look The frames are fashion-led pieces for men and women, which is why they have such worldwide reputation and celebrity appeal. It’s their uniqueness and exclusivity that makes them so covetable. Some of the designs are quite classic and others more innovative and zany. Whatever a customer chooses, the main objective is to make sure they reflect their facial features and characteristics, as no two faces are the same. The frames are available in materials such as titanium, horn and bloc acetate and each piece is hand crafted for a comfortable fit, without compromising on the style element. ❧ 24 ❧

How long does it take before getting the finished product? Between three to four weeks. We guess it has a hefty price tag? Bespoke frames start at a surprisingly reasonable £260. We want to offer our customers the best we can in optometry services and a variety of designs, styles and prices. Very few places in South Wales offer the Tom Davies collection, which is why we brought it to Barry for our local customers. What’s more, customers travel from further afield because they want unique service from us.

If bespoke is a step too far, fear not, as Arbuthnot stocks the less pricey Tom Davies ready-to-wear collection. Arbuthnot’s highly skilled staff and state of the art technology provide a total eye care service. Nowadays, there is so much choice, but they have narrowed down your search by offering designer frames and sunglasses from Prada, Versace, Diro, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Ray Ban and Oakley, to name a few. Autumn is a perfect time to ring the changes, so if you fancy a new style or, like me, just want to look sassy and intelligent, a trip to Arbuthnot is a must.

ESSENTIALLY HAWKES There are certain rules and traditional norms when it comes to dressing men and no one knows this more than Russell Scott Lawson, owner of Hawkes Essentials in Cardiff. Located in the city’s Morgan Arcade, Hawkes is the epitome of the independent gentlemen’s outfitters at the cutting edge of fashion.

He explains that Hawkes Essentials offers unrivalled service and attention to detail. “We understand that stylish men look for a cut and finish in clothing that sets them apart,” says Russell. “Within a few seconds it is easy to assess the quality of a suit just by the way it falls and drapes and there are tell-tale signs that anyone with a discerning eye will spot”. Russell and his staff are there to help anyone who feels sartorially challenged and Russell believes that men are never more than a few basic items away from being stylish and well-dressed. What may these be, we wonder? Well, for the man who needs to be suited and booted, look no further than good tailoring. You can be assured of good quality off-the-peg suiting at Hawkes that can be altered to give a great fit. Any man who wants to stand out from the crowd will probably want to go for bespoke tailoring which allows for more of a free reign when it comes to detailing like lapels, colour of lining, stitching and button holes.

“Gresham Blake specialises in contemporary styling with a more relaxed fit...”

Right now, Russell and the Hawkes Essentials team are excited about the recent introduction of designer suits by the innovative and creative designer Gresham Blake – one of the hottest names in tailoring for men and women. Blake specialises in contemporary styling with a more relaxed fit and finish than typical of a traditional Saville Row tailor. Russell still maintains that nothing beats classic British tailoring, but today’s man wants to ring the changes with suits that reflect their individuality, personality and ever changing lifestyles. Hawkes Essentials offers the full Gresham Blake bespoke and made-tomeasure service which has a growing ‘A list’ celebrity following and is set to be big this autumn. Of course, Russell recognises that the biggest problem fashionable men face, is knowing how to fulfil the ‘smart casual’ dress code. As Russell explains, “It’s a real black hole in styling terms and is the trickiest feat to pull off as it involves a bit more creativity. In addition, men want to look different when they leave the office and often, ultimately fall short on the casual and leisure wear.” This is where Hawkes Essentials satisfy the needs of any man wanting to ring the changes or those wishing to maintain a sense of timeless casual style, yet with that modern, urban edge. They champion a gentleman’s right to express his individuality by stocking an enviable selection of quality labels such as Matinique, Sand, Grenson, Milena, Gibson, Boateng, Camel Active and Remus Uomo to name a few. ❧ 29 ❧

Whether men are looking for a formal or more relaxed look, Russell emphasises that it is essential they accessorise with good quality belts, shoes and socks, “It’s the smallest details that appeal to our customers to ensure an effortless yet groomed look”. If all this sounds a bit too fanciful, rest assured there is nothing intimidating about Hawkes Essentials or the brands they sell. Russell is quick to point out that they are there to help anyone who prefers unhurried and individual service that is all too lacking in high street stores. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here; instead you’ll find a team willing to spend time with you, ensuring that you invest in something that will look good for a long time. Plus, anyone who is worried that setting foot in an independent men’s boutique will render you a slave to fashion, then fear not; Hawkes Essentials literally sells ‘the essentials’ – outstanding quality tailoring and clothing at a range of prices, shirts, ties, shoes and accessories. Russell likes to keep things simple wearable clothes that can be worn with a little individuality and labels that separate you from the crowd without you becoming a designer clothes horse. And his final top tip – a good quality coat – you won’t regret it. Hawkes Essentials 37-39 Morgan Arcade Cardiff CF10 1AF 029 2037 3780 www.hawkesessentials.com

Actually, Russell describes Hawkes more as a high end boutique for the modern man, offering elegant, timeless classic clothing and contemporary stylish brands. So, how has Russell managed to be one of the last standing in an era that has seen so many outfitters disappear from our city centres?

When local Vale couple Peter and Mary Murray were planning their extension, they sought the design and build expertise of Cowbridge based kitchen and interiors company Room For Living to create their dream kitchen.

DESIGNED FOR LIFE We asked Mary what led her to choose Room for Living I had visited one other kitchen company in Cardiff (who didn’t even get back to me) and it was whilst visiting Cowbridge one day, I popped into the Room for Living showroom where I was introduced to Jo Buckerfield, one of the company’s designers. I was very impressed and so, the next day, I took my husband Pete along to meet them.

What was it about Jo that you liked? Her manner and customer approach was outstanding and she seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the project. Did you have an idea of how you wanted your kitchen to look? After much thought, Pete and I decided on a modern kitchen rather than a traditional country kitchen, as we both wanted a very clean look with ultra modern appliances. We had a rough idea as to the look and layout we wanted and together came up with a basic brief and then left it all to Jo. She came up with a couple of plans and we chose the one we liked. There was no fuss and Jo helped us to choose the worktop and floor tiles. Are you pleased with the end result? Our kitchen looks even better than the computer images Jo produced and the whole family is delighted with the outcome.

“We now spend the whole time in the kitchen and the cinema room which leads directly off from it.”

How does the new kitchen fit into the extension? We have had a courtyard amalgamated into the house. Using this and our old kitchen area gives us a whole new space. The architect was Sion Williams from Kotzmuth and Williams. We wanted the kitchen to be the hub of the household and for our other rooms to flow from there.

How do you use your new kitchen? We now spend the whole time there and in the cinema room which leads directly off from it. The kitchen is great to cook in as it flows so well. Room for Living recommended Miele appliances and even offered us the chance to attend a course to learn how to use the oven and steam oven to their full capabilities, which was really useful! How long did the extension process take? The builders were on site for nine months and they have been incredible. We used Michael Coxe from Northrise and would thoroughly recommend him. You seem to be lucky with your choice of companies working on the project? Yes, we have, especially when you hear nightmare stories of projects taking much longer than they should and things going wrong. The whole job has gone smoothly and the team from Room for Living have been superb. Their customer care has been truly outstanding. LIGHT AND DAY Sometimes, others do not see who we are and who we want to be. Maryanne Hawes does! As the owner of Light and Day Photography, she sees what is imperceptible to the human eye, yet captures it perfectly through the eye of a lens. Here, she tells us about her reason for being.

What makes you different to other portrait photographers? I specialise in natural light, as it’s the best way to bring out authenticity and emotion in anyone. I prefer locations where clients can completely relax; often outside. We walk, talk, drink coffee, run or dance until we get the variety of shots we want. The client’s experience is as important as the end result. I try not to put a time limit on portrait shoots; it takes as long as it takes to make the connection and evoke a response that will then come out as pure, real emotion in the image. No one is asked to fake it. No cheese!

Who do you like photographing most? I love the way families interact with each other and in my ‘Day in the Life’ sessions, I really get to know the family and record their day in images. Teen photography is another passion. As a mother of two, I know how vulnerable, yet full of potential these young adults are. I try to capture that fleeting moment of a child as he or she crosses the threshold into adulthood; it’s a beautiful, challenging age of self discovery.

“I want to show that location portraiture in natural light is an affordable, enjoyable experience in so many ways.”

The ‘Beloved’ sessions are for people of all ages, at any stage in a relationship. It’s about capturing the love between two people. Oh, and I love photographing pets, especially dogs. Who chooses you? Anyone who is prepared to connect with me to capture valuable memories and feelings. Where is your client base? I’ll go anywhere if I feel my client really wants what I’m offering, but most of my work is in Cardiff and South Wales, Bristol and the West Country. What do you love most about your work? The constant creative challenges and energy needed to make each shoot special and original. Why did you choose photography? My mum was a successful monochrome landscape photographer and we grew up with a darkroom in the airing cupboard! I always had a creative urge and it took me a while to accept that, so eighteen months ago I took the plunge to set up in business.

“The client’s experience is as important as the end result. I try not to put a time limit on portrait shoots; it takes as long as it takes to make the connection.” ❧ 32 ❧

You don’t use a studio? Not normally. However, this autumn sees me moving into a natural light studio built in our garden, where I can continue natural light portraits throughout the long dark days. It’s not a studio in the usual sense of the word though; it will be naturally bright and comfortable for my clients and a step away from the great outdoors. Everyone wants to look perfect what is your take on ‘airbrushing’? Digital post-processing is part of my job. I need to spend time enhancing any emotions that I’m trying to convey in someone’s image. Sometimes I need to remove clutter, both literally and metaphorically. That is acceptable to me – body reshaping is not.

What makes you happiest? Finding flow is my happiest state and the focused energy that my work gives me. My family, husband, children and travel. Oh, and chocolate. Funniest moment in your job? I can’t divulge the funniest moment; but it involved a too tight pair of trousers! Most challenging piece of work? Recently, I spent 5 hours photographing a dozen dogs. Every shoot is fun and challenging. I had a ‘Beloved’ shoot in a Force 9 Gale. Who would you most like to photograph, living or dead? Hugh Laurie and Gandhi would have been an interesting one.

Any exciting plans for the future? Plenty. Enhance the sessions I already provide. Also to create a more human and honest approach for business people who want portraits to capture the essence of their personality and their professional values. I want to show that location portraiture in natural light is an affordable, enjoyable experience in so many ways.

“I love the way families interact with each other and in my ‘Day in the Life’ sessions, I really get to know the family.” ❧ 33 ❧

For some people, the biggest decision when buying spectacles is which frames to choose. However, there are also huge variations in lenses, and SEIKO has been at the forefront of lens technology for almost fifty years. From anti-reflective coatings to sophisticated varifocals, SEIKO has consistently led the way in delivering future lens technology helping you to...

SEE TOMORROW’S TECHNOLOGY TODAY SEIKO’s expertise in the field of vision extends back to the 1964 Olympic Games, when they designed the official timing equipment. They introduced optical lenses to recognise when light beams were broken, and once the Olympics were over, it was an obvious progression to apply these scientific principles to spectacle lenses as well. From that point onwards, SEIKO lenses became synonymous with cutting-edge technology, giving crystal-clear vision to people around the world. SEIKO’s optical and chronology divisions are dedicated to perfection. The company’s watches are designed and engineered to run with absolute precision, and their lenses are crafted to equally exacting standards. As a result, SEIKO Optical products can improve your vision in many ways.

Thin, light and clear lenses The slimmer your lenses, the wider your choice of suitable frames. Additionally, lighter lenses make spectacles more comfortable to wear, and greater clarity reduces eyestrain and discomfort. SEIKO combine all these elements together into one groundbreaking product, which can be almost 50% thinner and lighter than conventional lenses.

SuperClean Coat SEIKO has developed an anti-reflection coating for its lenses that almost totally eliminates reflections, for a better appearance and far less visual interference – especially useful for driving at night. A fine coating on each lens helps to prevent anything sticking to it - SuperClean Coat repels water with ease, while grease and dirt can be removed at a stroke.

Varifocals As our eyes age, their ability to focus over different distances diminishes, but SEIKO varifocal lenses can compensate for this, with advanced designs helping to prevent blurring and distortion.

Transitions lenses SEIKO Transitions lenses eliminate the need to switch between spectacles and sunglasses. These ingenious lenses have an adaptive tint that reacts to ultraviolet light by darkening, to block out harmful UV rays. When you return indoors, the lenses become clear again, for sharp vision in all lighting conditions.

A single pair of spectacles can deliver clear vision at all distances, with a much wider field of view than some other varifocal lenses - helping you to see the bigger picture.

Titanium frames Inspired by the expertise of its watch making division, SEIKO offers a range of titanium spectacle frames. Quality lenses still require an attractive frame to house them, and these feather-light products have the added benefit of being incredibly strong. SEIKO titanium frames are acclaimed as some of the world’s finest, bringing true style to spectacles. When you choose SEIKO products, you are benefiting from decades of manufacturing excellence and continual development, whether you need single vision spectacles or varifocals. Ask your optician about SEIKO lenses and see the difference for yourself. VA L E L I F E C O M P E T I T I O N

With regards to winter tips, I’m noticing more tweed teamed with brighter knitwear - country gent meets the city slicker look. Many of our new jackets are featuring small flashes of colour setting them apart from the norm.

Winter is fast approaching, a monsoon is upon us, the nights are slowly getting colder and it’s time to think about our winter wardrobe. I’m always excited about autumn. Warmer colours, cosy jackets and knitwear are flooding into the shop and another season is upon us.

Suzanne Jaya Style and substance How confident do you feel in your clothes and do you really know what suits you? If you’re not sure then it’s time to review and revamp your wardrobe and give it a good old workout. Autumn/winter is the biggest fashion season of the year, so we caught up with Suzanne Jaya, Personal Stylist and Image Coach to get some advice on what to do this season.

How does someone get it right? Assess whether last winter’s clothes tick this season’s boxes. It goes without saying that you might have an eye on a new pair of boots, the latest aviatorstyle jacket or something terribly unsuitable. The key thing is to get the foundations right because if you miss the opportunity to buy the seasonal basics by mid October, then you’ll be into the party season. If last year’s clothes have been unworn, ask yourself why. Maybe you felt uncomfortable, older or the colour drained you and the money wasted may have been better spent on a style professional? Do clients find it easy to part with unsuitable clothes? Yes, usually they can’t wait as they have made a conscious decision to see me and they are prepared to make changes to get the results they want.

“These days there is so much choice... the key thing is to get the foundations right because if you miss the opportunity to buy the seasonal basics by mid October, then you’ll be into the party season.”

Photographs courtesy of Maryanne Hawes www.lightanddayphoto.com

What’s your take on this season’s trends? To be honest, most trends are revisited each year and tweaked slightly. Different words are used to describe them, but basically they are the same. Generally it’s the little details such as fabric, fit and embellishments that give clues about how up-to-date the look is. Trends will always come and go, so really, it’s about how someone interprets the look that is important.

How do they benefit from your Wardrobe Workouts? I give them permission to do what they’ve wanted to do for ages. They get advice on how to dress for their shape and learn which colours and styles suit them best. Most women dabble in lots of bits and pieces, buying clothes randomly and in a hurry. It’s no wonder that they’re confused and need help. These days there is so much choice, that I am able to take a bird’s eye view of what’s out there and choose pieces for them that make them look and feel great. That really counts for a lot. How else do you help? So many ways on a one-to-one basis, but also in my group workshops and details of those are on my website. Turn to page 34 for a chance to win a Wardrobe Workout with Suzanne.

PENARTH

Before visiting the shop, you may prefer to take a peek at their website and the new stock arriving each week. As an aside, how often do you see fabulous umbrellas when you need them; and would you know where to get one? Thought not! Add it to your Queen B list for a truly pulled together look this autumn.

Complete your outfit at The Queen B The Queen B in Penarth has got the pick of this season’s shoes and accessories; and as every stylish woman knows, what you wear on your feet can make or break your outfit. Bag £49.99

On first impressions The Queen B is a boutique-style shoe retailer, yet on closer inspection it becomes readily apparent that there really is a whole lot more on offer in store. Gorgeous handbags by designer Charlotte Reid and costume jewellery weave their way among the footwear, offering what seems to be a one-stop shop for all your accessories.

Clogs £45

That’s not to say it’s contrived or too ‘mix and matchy’ – perish the thought! On the contrary, Jodie Tanner has selected her stock well to complement you and your clothes, rather than screaming out “Guess which shop I went to!” Classic flats sit alongside beautiful bridal footwear and fashionable killer heels and you’ll be hard pressed not to find a style to suit you. In fact, you may be tempted to buy two pairs. Now, this is where the purists among you may switch off; some shoes and bags, whilst looking like real leather are, in fact, not. This explains their affordability, which isn’t a bad thing when you consider the fickle fashion trends. Also, for anyone with ethical reasons for not wearing leather, this is the point where you might want to spread the good word.

COWBRIDGE

Wise women are trading the madness of the City Centre with its overwhelming array of shops, for the personal touch offered by a new breed of small town boutiques.

On appraising Sue’s success it’s easy to see that it’s down to a recipe of key ingredients: ■ Friendly, knowledgeable staff ■ Quality garments that are timeless yet fashionable ■ An understanding of real women, their shape and style choices ■ A high level of service for both regular and new customers Add to that the promise of a lovely day out in the Vale of Glamorgan, where you can explore the landscape, shops and eateries.

Boots £59

Reputable designs by, Olsen, Gold by Michael H, Fred Sabatier, Suzy Smith bags and jewellery by Gabby, sit nicely alongside other labels unique to Lois such as Zele and Frank Lyman, with the added bonus of the individual attention and service that you deserve. There’s no contest really. With free parking, cafés, restaurants, a stress-free High Street, and plenty of new things to discover, a day in Cowbridge beckons.

A word to the wise – Lois of Cowbridge

One person to be causing some interest in Cowbridge, is Sue Marshall, owner of Lois Boutique. She knows exactly how to make a style conscious woman very happy. And she should know – she’s seen the business grow in strength, so much so, that the demand for a second boutique was only a matter of time.

The Queen B 8 Washington Buildings Stanwell Road, Penarth CF64 2AD 029 2071 1100 www.thequeenb.co.uk Visit The Queen B on October 2nd from 9.30am to celebrate their first birthday with a glass of bubbles. See you there!

Lois 27 & 29 High Street, Cowbridge CF71 7AE 01446 774101 and 01446 772471

Lois boutique now occupies two adjacent premises in the High Street in Cowbridge, each of the spaces having a different ambience and offering. The original shop at Number 27 has been transformed into a quality shoe shop with brands such as Reiker, Vandal and Cappalini. Also a range of new season’s bags, umbrellas and rainwear offer top-to-toe styling for style-conscious women. As the emphasis is on style and contemporary fashion rather than following short-term trends, next door stocks smart and casual daywear, occasion to cruisewear and a range for larger ladies. ❧ 40 ❧

PENARTH

Partner up with Gingers and Belle The leaves are starting to fall and the nights are beginning to draw in, so you’ll be relieved to know that colour and vibrancy are two of the things that stand out when you walk into Gingers or sister boutique Belle on Penarth’s Stanwell Road. It’s certainly the perfect antidote to the drabness of a cloudy, dark autumn day and you can take solace in this season’s strong hot colours of magenta, purple and jade.

Both shops are awash with fabrics, prints and a range of new looks for women wanting to layer up with the latest winter styles. The extensive range of accessories and eye-catching jewellery complements this season’s hotbed of colours and provides that extra detail for women wanting to instantly transform any outfit. The layering theme continues again this year and the Sahara range is an effortless way of achieving a tonal and individual look. For anyone who loves to be noticed, then add a dramatic twist to your wardrobe with clashing bold colours, layered over leggings and worn with the latest pure wool swing coat by Adini. Regular customers return to Gingers and Belle for the easy-to-wear pieces by Adini and ethical British brand Sahara. New in, is the Fairtrade and eco-conscious Polish brand Zele, who focus on texture and design details to create beautiful garments from natural materials for confident women. The range looks super on the larger lady and compliments the Sahara range perfectly. Any boutique that relies on just clothing to attract customers won’t survive today’s cut and thrust economy.

PENARTH

Julie T – great style never goes unnoticed Visit Penarth and you’re certain to notice the clock tower roundabout; a well known landmark used as a reference point when giving directions. It is Penarth’s answer to Piccadilly Circus and anyone would be forgiven for driving around it with little regard to anything other than the traffic and road ahead. It’s surprising then to find that one of Penarth’s most popular boutiques, Julie T, is located on the corner of the roundabout. It is not the most likely site for a clothes shop, and might easily go unnoticed when circumnavigating busy traffic. So, it’s just as well that owner Julie Turner has put paid to that, with window displays of eye-catching clothes that will have you driving around for a second look. The next step is to park up and pop in it’s worth it. Julie T boutique will delight you with its unusual, vibrant garments and accessories at reasonable prices. Truthfully, it is not designer-led in the trend-setting sense, but it is a boutique worthy of being in your little black book.

Julie’s mission is to source beautiful casual wear and smart day and evening wear for women who want to stand out from the crowd. Whether your style is classic or dramatic, you’re certain to love the way each piece flatters and creates shape and form to the figure. If you’re shopping for a wedding, party or special event, or even topping up your autumn/winter wardrobe, you’re sure to find something here. New season’s pieces from European brands such as Gina Bacconi, Lonkell, Jus d’Orange, Peppercorn, Fransa, Official and Bulluda are in stock now. To narrow down your choices Julie can help as she knows instinctively what best suits her customers. What more can you ask from a boutique bold enough to take on an iconic landmark and canny enough to understand real women? Julie T 1 Windsor Terrace, Penarth CF64 1AA 029 2070 8784

Community spirit is what makes the experience more pleasurable and that is why Gingers continues to attract old and new customers alike. The success of both shops relies on friendly service and staff who have an objective eye for what suits a customer or not. They go also that extra mile by offering garment alterations, which is a relief to anyone who finds themselves in between sizes. We are a nation of hoarders. Whether it’s clothes, CD’s or nik-naks from our travels, they all need storage. Often we cram our homes with mass produced ‘storage solutions’ when we could opt for beautiful bespoke designed furniture instead. We featured Bianchi Fine Furniture in our pages almost two years ago. Vale Life recently caught up with owner Giancarlo Bianchi to find out why he’s so passionate about his work.

HEART AND CRAFT How’s business? It’s definitely moved on a pace! We still thrive on designing and hand crafting free standing hardwood furniture for both private and corporate clients. However, in response to an increasing demand from our clients for bespoke fitted furniture and high-end interior joinery, we have significantly expanded our workload. Where is your work best suited? Our work is particularly suited to period properties where awkward and irregular spaces require accurate design and workmanship. It’s rewarding getting involved in a client’s house renovation or new-build project from the early stages. We recently installed a white fitted bedroom wardrobe and a walk-in wardrobe which were part of an extensive renovation project of a period building and are in the process of making and fitting a substantial kitchen.

We also dealt with the full internal renovation of a period property, where we designed, built and fitted oak staircases, internal and external doors, free-standing (small display cabinets, bed-side cabinets, four-poster bed) and fitted (wardrobe, radiator cabinets) furniture. How many of you are there? We’ve always taken pride in having a small but highly skilled and capable workforce of four to five people. The most significant addition to the workforce is our head craftsman and workshop manager Kerry Beer who has over 35 years experience in designing, making and fitting furniture from private homes to restaurants and hotels here in the UK and around the world. His wealth of knowledge has been crucial in the expansion of the services we can now provide.

What type of customer do you attract? I’m always pleased to see returning customers as well as new ones! In the commercial world we still continue our strong relationships with clients such as the Penderyn distillery which we supply with an increasing volume of products. Private clients we served in the past have recently come back with more work, especially fitted furniture. We also attract new private clients who, for instance, are renovating or extending their home and that heard of us by word of mouth. So, the common thread that runs through our customer base is that they all appreciate the design, quality, attention to detail and exceptional customer service that we offer at Bianchi Fine Furniture. Please describe some of your recent projects I recently designed and crafted a substantial lounge coffee table made from solid American black walnut with two glass surfaces. This was a really satisfying project as it involved many hours of hand planing the profile of the four sinuous legs. Other recent projects included the white painted fitted wardrobe I mentioned above, which included some elaborate fitting because of the uneven walls and unusual angles involved, and the making of an eleven foot long, wall to wall lounge unit in American white oak.

“Bianchi Fine Furniture... design, quality, attention to detail and exceptional customer service.” ❧ 42 ❧

“Our work is particularly suited to period properties where awkward and irregular spaces always require accurate design and workmanship.”

What is your dream commission? The most important thing is that the client’s brief is always respected and the end product is at least as good as the client expected it to be. So, with that in mind, I treat all commissions with the same seriousness and utmost respect. If I were to choose a specific project, I must admit to having a weakness for those where I’m given a fairly loose brief. With these the design process is more natural and enjoyable. The coffee table I mentioned earlier is a good example of this. What are your plans for 2011? To move Bianchi Fine Furniture to new premises between Porthcawl and Cardiff where we would be better placed to serve our core customer base which increasingly comes from this area. Typically what is the process from order to completion? This really depends on the type of project. For example, I am about to confirm an order for a television cabinet in American white oak with a client in Porthcawl. Assuming we can finalise the design, that type of commission would take two to three weeks to be delivered.

“I treat all commissions with the same level of seriousness and the utmost respect.”

However, when we do get involved with the full renovation of a property, as I mentioned before, we tend to progress at the same pace as the project does, depending on how much work is involved.

With summer come and gone, our attention turns from gardens and outdoor activities, to cocooning and the home interior. So now is a great time to put into action plans for the revamp and refurbishment of that tired living room, or freshening up the bedroom with new furnishings, throws, and cushions.

CUSHIONING THE FALL Design Inspiration is packed with wonderful fabrics, wall coverings, and ideas to get the creative juices flowing!

The talented design team also provide free professional consultations instore, or can arrange a home visit, to offer some of the best design advice around. Coupled with the design service, the business owners Wendy and Rose, offer a comprehensive making service for fabrics. We met up with them at the twostorey showroom to discuss some of their latest projects.

How has the summer been for Design Inspiration? ROSE We have had a really busy summer. Not only did we have two showhomes to furnish, but lots of our regular customers called to have the next room on their list furnished! WENDY Yes, the showhomes that we worked on were great fun - they were like a blank canvas, and we were just allowed to get on with doing what we do best - every designer’s ideal project and completed within budget!

Was it easy to stay within budget? ROSE We always ask our clients if they have a budget, but we have a vast array of pattern books and suppliers to choose from, so we can cater for most budgets and tastes. If a client had an existing sofa or carpet, how easy was it to coordinate new furnishings to blend into the scheme? WENDY It’s obviously a bit more of a challenge, but I suppose as we’ve been doing interior design for over thirty nine years, it becomes second nature to know what works and what doesn’t. ROSE Clients like our honesty and are amazed when we pull out one of the hundreds of pattern books and show them a fabric or wallpaper that is just perfect for their project. ❧ 44 ❧

So, apart from fabrics and wall coverings, what other services can you provide? ROSE Obviously we can make the fabrics into curtains, blinds, cushions or any other soft furnishings, as well as providing a fitting service for the tracks, poles or upholstered pelmets. But we can also supply a wide variety of flooring, rugs, lighting, and home accessories. WENDY With clients investing in their homes rather than moving, our upholstery range and reupholstery service has also been very popular.

“It becomes second nature to know what works and what doesn’t.”

“We have a vast array of pattern books and suppliers to choose from.”

So, what’s next for the team? ROSE With the schools back and Christmas around the corner, our order books normally fill up by early October!

What other projects have you been working on? ROSE One of our regular clients recently came in and wanted an African themed bedroom. I used lots of warm natural tones and textures teamed with earthy shades and added a quirky stool upholstered in faux giraffe!

WENDY The new season’s collection of fabrics and wall coverings will arrive this month along with the latest range of gifts and jewellery, so there’s never a dull moment at Design Inspiration!

WENDY I have just completed another home within the Manor House at Tal-y-Garn near Pontyclun. It’s a really beautiful location. The windows and rooms there have such grand proportions and look simply stunning when they are completed. Our client was really excited about the soft furnishings arriving and it is so rewarding to see the expression on people’s faces, when they get to see the scheme you have designed transformed into reality.

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to fine jewellery, I’m a bit of a novice. I’ve always found fine jewellery a little bit too serious which is why I’ve received most of it as a gift rather than buying it myself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely, but I know what I like – shiny precious metals, big gems and bold fine pieces that demand attention.

A CUT ABOVE

Jack Cohen

At David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff’s beautiful and historic Royal Arcade, Jack Cohen and Deborah Rawle are there to explain, inform and educate those of you who may be uncertain about choosing precious metals or gems. Their comprehensive knowledge is borne out of their combined fifty years’ experience and the solid reputation on which David Edwards Jewellers have always successfully traded.

Visitors to the Royal Arcade will appreciate that its Victorian architecture lends itself to the traditional shop interior of David Edwards. Once inside, you’re assured of friendly, unstuffy service and will feel at ease the minute you walk through the door. It’s reassuring to know they have remained steadfast in their own style, in spite of the more contemporary class of jewellers. Don’t be fooled though, as you can be sure of truly exquisite pieces that combine contemporary designs with traditional craftsmanship.

Fashion trends of late, have seen women shy away from gold in preference of colourful, readily available costume jewellery. This has been, in part, due to TV style programmes and of course the economic downturn which has changed the mindset towards investment jewellery. However, any style conscious person will know that trends come and go, so it was only a matter of time before jewellery, in the true sense of the word made a huge comeback. That time is now!

Jewellery is back with a vengeance this Autumn; and not the cheerful ‘mix and match with every outfit’ type, but rocks, gems and classic timeless pieces. Faking it til you make it, is fine to a limit, but nothing feels as good as wearing the real thing – it’s like adorning yourself with cashmere - you never want to take it off. Is David Edwards Jewellers the type of place you can browse without feeling awkward or obliged to buy? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Jack and Deborah realise that some people are nervous about buying gems and gold, either due to a lack of knowledge or because of a heftier price tag than fashion jewellery. Cautious readers take note; you may want to find out whether any old or unworn pieces of jewellery lurking in your drawers can be sold or remodelled. This way you could invest in something new or have an existing piece redesigned to make it look more contemporary. If you hanker after something with a sense of history then ask to see some of the beautiful second hand and vintage pieces on offer there. Then decide on a budget and your style preference. Perhaps classic, dainty bracelets and diamond stud earrings are the mainstay of your jewellery collection; or maybe bold rocks and stones are a passion of yours.

❧ 46 ❧

“The shop and private offices are traditional in the way you might expect of a jeweller in a Victorian arcade; wood panelling, regency style chairs, mahogany desks.”

For anyone in doubt that diamonds really are a girl’s best friend – Jack and Deborah trawl the globe to seek out unique designs and diamonds of the highest quality and grading to add to their large collection of precious gems and pearls. Whether you are looking for bracelets, a necklace, earrings or rings, there is something there to suit all tastes and budgets. The trick is to buy something that suits you, your personality and of course your pocket; then wear it and love it.

“If you hanker after something with a sense of history then have a look at some of the beautiful second hand and vintage pieces on offer there.” Whatever your style, the team at David Edwards will be happy to talk through your options and help you find some stunning signature pieces. Preaching to the converted is fruitless, as they will already appreciate the importance of skilled craftsmen, valuations and quality graded gems and precious metals. They make wise choices and recognise the significance and sentiment of passing heirloom pieces through the family.

“Invest in a new piece or have an existing piece redesigned to make it look more contemporary.” Gold and silver is in resurgence, in both fashion and investment terms. Beautifully jewellery always stands the test of time and, if like me, you think that fine jewellery is all a bit too serious, think again. Today’s trend is for striking, fun pieces that make it more accessible and appealing than ever before. ❧ 47 ❧

When thinking of adding a room to their home, most people consider a traditional conservatory build, but if you want to bring outside living in and inside living out, then an orangery is the perfect option. Vale Life spoke to Mrs Nicola Williams of Sully on why...

THE FUTURE’S ORANGERY

“It was perfect! I really couldn’t be more pleased.”

Did you visit other showrooms before choosing Creative Window & Build Solutions of Barry? Yes, I got five other quotes. Creative had previously fitted the double glazing throughout our house and we’d built up a good rapport. I was very happy with the windows but I wanted to get quotes from other companies to see what they could offer in terms of creativity. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and wanted to ensure that the company I ultimately chose for the design and construction of the orangery were right for me. I needn’t have worried as I made the right choice with Creative. What did you like about Creative? I wanted a local company that shared my vision. After much consideration, I felt that only Dean from Creative and I were on the same wavelength. Dean is a very creative person anyway and he understood exactly what I wanted to achieve and how to make the project happen.

How long did the process take? From January until the end of March.

Was the process a smooth one? Yes, the builder working with Creative was very good. He made sure he cleaned up every day so that there was as little disruption as possible. Why did you choose an orangery over a conservatory? We have a lovely garden and I wanted to expand our enjoyment of it. An orangery is the perfect way to do this as the doors ‘concertina’ back so the full expanse of the garden can be enjoyed.

“We have a lovely garden and I wanted to expand our enjoyment of it. An orangery is the perfect way to do this.”

How do you use your orangery? As well as enjoying the garden more, we tend to use the orangery as much, if not more, than any other room in the house. In fact, at the time of the World Cup, the weather was fine and we were able to sit on the patio and watch the games on our TV in the orangery. It was fantastic! We entertain family and friends quite a lot and there’s a good flow from the kitchen and dining room into the orangery and out to the garden. While I’m in the kitchen, I can still feel part of the action! Would you recommend Creative Window & Build Solutions? Absolutely! Dean is also a very good artist and when he saw the colour of my leather sofa, he mentioned that he could design and paint a canvas triptych for me to hang above it. When all the work was done, Dean called with the artwork and I was delighted. It was perfect! I really couldn’t be more pleased.

There are few examples where technology and tradition work so well hand in hand that they’re a match made in heaven. Matthew Mullooly, owner of Northern Star Jewellers in Penarth is a fine example of this creative synergy. Vale Life gets...

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Our fast world is in danger of losing age-old skills and craftsmanship in favour of technological advancement. It’s scary stuff, yet when the two are in harmony, truly amazing and beautiful things can be created. In celebration of its first anniversary, we caught up with the wise man behind Northern Star Jewellers to find out how he has managed to unite his creative talents with the mechanical arts. Matthew is no rookie when it comes to craftsmanship and computers, so here’s what he had to say.

Matthew, you are a year on – how does it feel? I can’t believe how time has flown! It was pretty nerve-racking opening my jewellery workshop, although word quickly spread and I’ve been inundated with commissions from Wales and all over the UK and I really can’t ask better than that. What’s your secret? I’m pretty down to earth, which is what’s needed when working closely with clients who are excited, yet nervous about creating a bespoke piece of jewellery. In their head they have an idea of what they want, yet some find it hard to describe. I help turn those ideas into a reality to create something that is stunning and completely unique to them. My previous background in animation helps me to bring a concept literally to life.

How does that happen? Clients may come in with a picture from a magazine or have sketched an outline design on paper, particularly in the case of engagement rings. I ask about their personal style, their lifestyle, the occasions where the jewellery might be worn and also help to match the size and scale of the piece to their frame and build. That way, we can create jewellery to suit every aspect of the client, right down to their personality. I may evolve those initial design thoughts onto paper first, before moving onto the technology bit. Yes, tell us about that In days gone by – a true craftsman would have made sketches on paper and then turned that into a piece of jewellery on the bench, using their tools and traditional skills of gem setting and gold or silver smithing. We still do the same, but the process in between uses computer aided design (CAD). This means that the client gets to see 3D design images of their jewellery and adjustments can be made to the design before the piece is finally cast into metal. It’s perfect for people who normally just purchase jewellery off the shelf because they are not very good at visualising a design concept. ❧ 50 ❧

This sounds quite expensive Anyone who wants an engagement or wedding ring for example, knows that a certain investment of funds will have to be made. The decision they need to make, is whether to buy something tangible they have seen in a shop window or to be totally involved in the design of their own individual piece. We cater for all budgets to help clients create something really outstanding. You sound so passionate I am. I love bringing together all my experience, training and skills to create a piece of jewellery that marries together gemstones with the perfect setting – and for someone who will treasure it forever.

There’s always something happening in the historic market town of Cowbridge. What is truly lovely is the energy and warmth of community spirit that makes this somewhere you want to spend time.

COWBRIDGE Whether it’s the traditional values of good, honest customer service, the charm and appeal of the period architecture or the twice monthly Farmers’ Market, one thing is sure, Cowbridge has a rare quality that is sadly lacking in big cities. Some people believe that Cowbridge is aspirational, but really it has something for everyone and embraces visitors and locals alike.

“Cowbridge has a rare quality... it really has something for everyone and embraces visitors and locals alike.”

Shopping and eating is a big focus, but a little known point of interest is the tranquil and stunning Physic Garden which provides sanctuary to weary shoppers, garden lovers and workers.

People with insufficient time in the week can take heart, as shops will open every Sunday from 19th September – an additional service that is welcomed and supported by anyone wanting to get out of the city madness. The autumn and winter months see Cowbridge at its best and the town is already buzzing in anticipation of forthcoming events. First off is a classical music event from 15th October, followed by the popular Cowbridge Fashion Week, with main fashion events running from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd October.

Culinary experts will be on hand for the weekend 29th to 31st October for the now famous Food and Drink Festival which provides food lovers with a host of produce and delicious goodies to sample. The town comes alive on the last Sunday of November for the magical Reindeer and Santa event, with families and children getting into the Christmas spirit. This is closely followed by a late night shopping extravaganza on 2nd December when retailers will be offering discounts, drinks and nibbles by candlelight, all to the sound of a choir. Excited? PENNY LANE

River View Chinese Restaurant I fell in love with my husband over dinner at a Chinese Restaurant and, as a result, I have developed a real romantic soft spot for a good Chinese meal. Nothing makes me want to glam up and go out quite like the thought of being wooed over prawn toast and crispy seaweed! So I jumped at the chance at a night out at the River View Chinese Restaurant in Cowbridge, which is beautifully perched over the river Thaw. Yes it was a damp Friday night, but I was unstoppable. It was for this reason I booked the table for 8.30pm. Purposely delaying my pleasure; so I wouldn’t find myself dining in a quiet and empty restaurant with little or no atmosphere and just whooshing down the food so I could move on which proved not to be the case in this instance as you’ll discover when you read on. The main restaurant is on the second floor, as the first floor is mainly bar and takeaway waiting area so, as we opened the glass door just off the decked outdoor seating area, I was a bit confused as to where to go. I was saved however by the wonderfully warm owner, Neng, who greeted us with a hearty smile and a nod to come upstairs. As we followed Neng, my husband was completely taken with some of the traditional art work on the stairwell. Clearly the service was exceptional as the evening allowed us to be well attended to, and it wasn’t long before we were settled with our menus (and my glass of house white, dry).

I always try the house wine in a new restaurant; I must have read somewhere that it gives you the measure of the attention to detail the owner truly has. I wasn’t disappointed. I was served a very crisp and apple filled Sauvignon Blanc, which was to cut through the meal and hold its own well, not so harsh that it would burn, but rounded enough to make me want more. I must point out here that my husband and I have rather healthy appetites and eyes that are always bigger than our bellies (especially in a Chinese restaurant). So when I tell you what we ordered, please think less ill of us! To start, we decided to share a little each of the classical Lettuce Wrap and a tasty Squid with Chilli and Peppers. The presentation was truly beautiful and I spent the first minute trying to dissect the rather intricate cucumber carving that adorned my squid; which was packed with flavour. Coated in a light but salty batter, the squid was still wonderfully tender and the hand chopped peppers and chilli made my mouth water even more. This was a mere trifle however when compared to the most amazing Lettuce Wrap I have ever had. We have all had variations of the classic Chinese starter of minced pork, spices and vermicelli in an iceberg cup, I am sure. But this was truly something else. You could clearly tell this had been chopped by hand rather than blended for the sake of convenience. I could distinctly taste each element of the wrap and, while the depth of flavour was a real winner, it was the crunch of the fresh lettuce followed by the exciting interior that really got me chomping. The main course of Rice, Singapore Noodles, Beef with Black Bean sauce and Ginger, Salt Chilli Prawns followed and I had to try the intriguingly named Three Times Stuffed Delicacy. ❧ 56 ❧

Anything that said delicacy in here must really mean it! All the dishes were full of spice and flavour, each cooked to perfection and a picture to look at. In fact, it was a nice, safe combination of mushrooms and peppers stuffed with minced pork and tofu, so perhaps a lesson on my part on over-indulgence. Although we ate all that we could, in our defence the portions are incredibly generous, even when we asked for a small portion of rice and noodles, it was still enough to feed three. As with all Chinese restaurants these days, the dessert menu offered only ice cream and moulded desserts, and a night cap (nothing wrong with that). I however, abstained. The meal overall was outstanding and I will definitely go back to sample the rest of the menu. I am a fussy customer but River View has won me over. I’m going to have to change my occupation as a result of my visit to River View, to that of Town Crier. “People of Cowbridge get out of your chairs, fill up the streets, the restaurants and bars. Stop watching your tellies and fill up your bellies!” There’s something very enchanting about River View Chinese Restaurant at Christmas time. This year, along with their popular a la carte menu, the restaurant is introducing a pick and mix style of cuisine, offering a mouth watering array of tasty dishes. Following the success of their Chinese New Year festivities, bookings are already being taken for what promises to be an evening of fabulous food and even more fabulous entertainment. If it’s a new pair of jeans to take you through the autumn and winter season, then there’s plenty to choose from. Jeans should be sexy, flattering and comfortable – it’s a tall order, but with a selection such as True Religion, classic and comfortable fit from J Brand, or the progressive style of Rock and Republic, one thing is for sure – you won’t want to take them off. Eye-catching and iconic leisurewear label e.vil is great for snuggling into this season and Aussie sheepskin boots from Love From Australia are perfect for cosy nights in or out. Conversely, Jovani is the celebrity label to look for if you need a jaw-dropping dress for the festive season. Mellissa Williams of RMA Williams Jewellers who spent two years studying the distance learning course, is now recognised by the Association as a professional jeweller and may use the letters PJ Dip after their name.

“I am thrilled to have passed the course. I have worked so hard, as well as work full time, but I am already putting my new knowledge to use and it’s the customers who get the benefit. I can now really help them get the perfect piece of jewellery,” said Mellissa, who owns the company with her husband Marcus Williams. S O U T H WA L E S

Gauci Organic Candles launches Cardiff range Gauci Organic Candles based in Cardiff have created a new range of their soya based organic candles. The selection, imaginitively entitled The Cardiff Range has been inspired by much-loved places in and around the city. Spiro Gauci, owner and master candle maker at Gauci organic Candles said, “I wanted to create a range that would remind people of home. Trial sniffs have already proved very popular and we’re confident that the range will take off – especially as gifts.”

The Diploma, which is split into two parts Jewellery Education Training (JET) 1 & 2 is a nationally recognised professional qualification for jewellers aimed at enhancing customer service, increasing consumer confidence and providing essential product knowledge. Michael Hoare, chief executive of the National Association of Goldsmiths said, “I applaud Mellissa on her achievement and for her commitment to excellent customer service. Customers don’t always know who to trust when buying jewellery, but by asking if the person serving has the Professional Jeweller’s Diploma, they know that they will get the right advice, information and support.”

Gauci’s holistic approach to candlemaking seems to be striking a chord with some quite high-profile fans waxing lyrical about the products. Angela Benfield of ITV says, “I love Gauci Organic Candles. “To reap, first we must sow.”

Most people at one point in their lives have dreamed of having their own business. You’d think, in a recession, that people would go off the idea. The reality, surprisingly, is that more people than ever want to own their own business. So, given these uncertain times, how can you ensure your fledgling enterprise doesn’t falter in the first year?

START-UP SUCCESS The absolute and possibly unsettling truth is you can’t! Many businesses fail in the first year for a variety of reasons and, depending on who you talk to, that figure varies from a reasonably optimistic 50% to a worryingly pessimistic 75% and don’t even think about opening a bar – the failure rate is in excess of 85%. So what, if anything, can you do to minimise the risk? First, don’t consider starting a business without doing your research. Know your business, know your market and know who your competitors are. I was in Cowbridge recently and was walking into one of my regular haunts for a coffee and noticed a chap I know who owns a few businesses in Cardiff. He was still there an hour later when I came out, so I went over and asked him how he was and what had brought him to Cowbridge. He explained that he was considering opening a business in Cowbridge and was watching footfall. He said this was the third day he’d been in town and he’d probably come back a further three or four times to get the information he wanted. This is a guy who’s very successful but he knew that rather than just guess, he’d find out first hand. When I asked him had his exercise been useful thus far, he said it had been a real eye-opener and he’d go away and consider what he’d learned.

The number of businesses I’ve coached and talked to over the years who’ve undertaken this level of research is less than a third – staggering really when you consider that the knowledge gained can make or break a business.

James Mason, The Business Centre Manager, (pictured right) says that he’s even had enquiries from a number of companies wanting to open retail units there – anything is possible in this flexible business environment.

Let’s assume for a moment that you have established that there is a market for your product or service. The next major considerations are start-up costs and overheads. How much is it going to cost to start-up? Will there be legal fees? Accountancy fees? What’s the rent going to cost? How much will heating and lighting cost? How much are the rates? Are there water rates? How much will it cost for a phone or a phone system? Where will I sit? What will I sit on? Computer? Business stationery? I was going to write will you need a website? Stupid question – no-one does business without a website these days (although many do business with awful ones – we’ll discuss that in a future issue). Anyway, you get the picture.

So what’s so good about this kind of serviced set-up. Firstly, there are minimum set-up costs. You can move into a private space complete with desk, seating and phone system with no capital outlay. You pay a monthly fee for your space which includes rent, rates, water, heat and light and seperately for your calls and any other services you use.

There’s a lot to consider and the best way to start a new business is... to start with as little cost as possible and this is why The Business Centre is certainly worth considering. The Business Centre is basically a serviced facility. I’m reluctant to say serviced office because many types of business work out of there. In fact, as we go to press, there are currently 75, ranging from sole traders to limited companies. And the range of businesses is interesting too – there’s a beauty salon, a print buyer, a logistics company, charities and a vehicle leasing company.

“The Business Centre... you just take on what you need when you need it.” ❧ 60 ❧

If business goes well you can consider moving to a larger space. If you do and business slows down, you can contract. If the business doesn’t work out, you can walk away (assuming you’ve paid your bills). The worse thing for anyone failing in business is paying back business debts on top of the sadness and misery of a shattered dream. There are other benefits too. There’s plenty of free parking. That’s good for you and your visitors. It’s conveniently located – junction 32 of the M4 is around fifteen minutes away as is Cardiff Bay. There are meeting and conference rooms with IT facilities you can hire by the hour. Again, no capital outlay – just pay as you use. You’ll also have a reception facility included in your monthly fee which will ensure you’ll appear and sound professional. There’s even a café on site where you can have a coffee or a light lunch. There are other breakout areas too with comfortable contemporary sofas where you can relax or hold informal meetings. The Business Centre also has links to separate storage facilities so, if buying and selling is your business, you don’t have to lease a warehouse or unit, you just take on what you need when you need it.

The ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ is once again upon us. Comforting images come to mind of hearty autumnal food, wood smoke and sumptuous armchairs in which to sit and mull over a glass of port. It’s nostalgia at its very best and a season in which the delightful Miskin Manor comes into its own.

THE CHEF’S TABLE There is an air of excited creativity going on in the kitchens and restaurant at Miskin Manor. Mark Beck, Executive Head Chef, and his team are busy planning their new autumn menu for the hotel’s Meisgyn Restaurant. Vale Life talked to him to find out more.

Is it beneficial to eat seasonal food? Food grown locally and eaten in the right season will always be at its most flavoursome, whether that is meat, fruits or vegetables. It will be full of the right nutrients and will provide us with optimum levels of energy needed for the colder months.

What’s do you like about autumn? The opportunity to start working with the abundance of ingredients that are available only at this time of year. Each season is exciting, but I love the depth of flavour that you get from vegetables in the autumn, such as pumpkin and butternut squash.

People tend to move away from salads at this time and crave warm, comforting, delicious food. We aim to be as creative as possible with our ingredients to make sure that we deliver on flavour, presentation and seasonal variety.

Do you grow your own vegetables for the kitchen? We do have a small kitchen garden where we can harvest seasonal herbs and the remainder we source from local suppliers to ensure the best quality and freshest produce for our dishes.

Sounds tempting. Is that how you got your two AA award Rosettes? We’re really proud of our achievement. It’s a culinary accolade awarded by AA inspectors who expect us to demonstrate consistently high standards of cuisine and service along with commitment and attention to the selection of quality ingredients. Who helps you? My right-hand man is Assistant Executive Head Chef, Lee Thomas. He was classically trained as a pastry chef and has worked with some of the best. It is still a passion of his, but now he loves creating new flavours and dishes, and overseeing and mentoring the junior chefs - we have the support of a great team.

How important is it to use local suppliers? Extremely - we want to ensure that local producers are supported and also it enables us to work more closely with suppliers to build a solid relationship in order to offer the very best to our diners. It means that we can respond quickly to the availability of seasonal produce and create dishes to include these ingredients.

What do you think people love about dining at the Meisgyn Restaurant? The fact that they can come here and relax completely. The hotel is nestled in the countryside, yet near enough to the M4 to make us accessible. Non-residents enjoy coming here for a stress-free dining experience or to celebrate something special. Their every need is attended to. The restaurant ambience is welcoming and well appointed, as you would expect in a country hotel of this standard and it sets the scene for their meal. ❧ 62 ❧

I’ve heard people say that they love the fact they can retire to the lounge after their food with a coffee and liquor and sink into a sofa in front of the log fire before going home. What’s more, in addition to the restaurant we have three private dining rooms which offer something more intimate for family or group celebrations. What else can food lovers expect in the coming months? It seems ages away, but we have already planned our special four-course seasonal lunch menu for December. At a reasonable £20 we will offer dishes such as Lemongrass, Chilli and Limemarinated Salmon and Tiger Prawns; Pork and Prune Terrine laced with Brandy with Plum Chutney & Melba Toast; Pan-fried Ribeye Steak, Sweet Potato & Garlic Puree, Wild Mushrooms, Thyme & Madeira Jus; Spinach, Girolle and Pine Nut Ravioli, Shallot Puree & Pesto Cream. This time of year is great for meat lovers and our dinner menu will feature seasonal game and fowl such as venison, partridge and turkey. And, for party revellers, bookings are already being taken for our popular Christmas and New Year events.

Avid gardeners will know that dwindling light and the promise of cooler days ahead does not spell the end of the gardening season. In fact, according to the experts at Stylegardens garden village in Wenvoe, this is the very time that you should be planning ahead and preparing for a showy display of spring flowers.

SEASONAL STYLE “There’s a lovely atmosphere in Stylegardens...”

A lovely cuppa is always a good place to start when making plans, which is why Stylegardens has recently extended its coffee shop. From there you can appreciate the early autumn sunshine and great views while pondering the array of plants and shrubs for next year. We caught up this season with Carl Hitchings, one of the Stylegarden owners for the low down on autumn garden care and to find out why there has been an increase in the number of visitors to the centre and coffee shop.

What’s been happening since our last chat? Well, we’re very pleased with what has been, for us, one of the best seasons for a long time. The beautiful weather we enjoyed earlier in the summer certainly brought out garden lovers. There’s a lovely atmosphere in Stylegardens, here in Wenvoe, with people really making the most of the warm weather. Keen gardeners have been stocking up on bedding plants and many people have come along to enjoy a coffee and snack at the coffee shop or to visit the delicatessen.

“Keen gardeners have been stocking up on bedding plants and many people have come along to enjoy a coffee and snack at the coffee shop or to visit the delicatessen.”

So has the new coffee shop proved to be a success? We have found that increasing numbers of customers are appreciating the seasonal link between gardening and food. They visit the centre and then spend time choosing plants and buying some local produce from the delicatessen. The coffee shop was extended to create an outdoor seating area, from where our customers can fully appreciate a relaxing garden environment. There are some lovely views and the odd visit from the local wildlife in the nature area that we’ve created. Children particularly love visiting with their families and get excited when they spot the birds and the butterflies. Tell us more about the delicatessen We stock a range of items such as cheese, butter and meats; also locally sourced jams, chutneys, honey and cakes and biscuits. There is a frozen food section offering seasonal fruits which are ideal for making summer puddings, pies and crumbles and seasonal and roasted vegetables.

❧ 64 ❧

“Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted now so that they have time to settle in the ground.”

“There are some lovely views and the odd visit from the local wildlife in the nature area that we’ve created. Children particularly love visiting with their families and get excited when they spot the birds and the butterflies.” The frozen patisserie is really popular and customers stock up on croissants for their breakfast. Obviously the stock will change as we head into autumn and customers can expect seasonal treats nearer Christmas. You have other businesses on the site too – please tell us about them Everything here is connected to the garden, be it landscape and buildings or pets, fish and equine products. The Landscape Centre supply sheds, summer houses, log cabins, greenhouses and fencing. Their customers come from Cardiff and the Vale. Countrywide has been here for five years supplying equine and pet products, clothing and garden machinery. Maidenhead Aquatics offer pond and tropical fish, equipment, feed and electrics. They find that our proximity to Cardiff airport brings customers from other areas, including Ireland because of their range of products and because they are so reasonably priced. They also offer 10% discount to landscape gardeners.

Looking ahead, what should we be doing in the garden now? With Autumn fast approaching, now is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs. With the soil temperature still warm from the summer, the roots will have a chance to establish themselves before the winter sets in.

Any tips for a splash of colour during the winter? Winter pansies, cyclamen, ivy and winter heathers will brighten up any patio pots or hanging baskets once the summer bedding has finished, adding colour to your garden on a dull day.

It’s also an ideal time to add some autumn colour to your garden. At Stylegardens we pride ourselves on our choice of plants. There is always a wide selection available, from the vibrant Acers (Japanese Acers), to the colourful stems of the Cornus (Dogwood), or why not try the ever popular Japanese Anemone with its abundance of late summer flowers. Now is the time to buy your spring flowering bulbs. They should be planted now so that they have time to settle in the ground and produce strong root systems. Autumn is also a good time to give hedges and shrubs a final tidy up and prune before the winter arrives. Also, give your lawn a final cut, and add some autumn lawn food. ❧ 65 ❧

THE LAST WORD Vale Life talks to Martyn Burnett, partner at Burnett Davies Lettings of High Street, Barry about the current state of play with the lettings market. Burnett Davies Lettings are a specialist residential lettings and property management company dedicated to the lettings and management of houses, flats and apartments across the Vale and throughout South Wales. Martyn, what is your role at Burnett Davies? I am one of three Partners at Burnett Davies which is a multi disciplined property partnership established over 25 years ago. I specialise in direct residential property investment and management. What do you like about being on High Street, Barry? The attraction to High Street is that it is a very small but vibrant retail environment which has high footfall with many committed retailers. How is the lettings market for you in the current economic climate? Following the frenetic pace in 2007/2008, the lettings market has settled but demand for property still remains strong with a good tenant uptake but an increasing shortage of properties coming to the market. Are you optimistic about the next eighteen months? I certainly do not see the tenant demand lessening, whereas it is evident the biggest drawback may be the supply of available properties. However, this should have an affect of strengthening rentals. What happens with bank lending, of course, will have the greatest impact.

“The attraction to High Street is that it is a very small but vibrant retail environment which has high footfall with many committed retailers.”

What do you like about the Vale? As an area it offers a fantastic variety of scenery from the countryside to the coast but whilst retaining excellent communication links. Where is your favourite place to stay in Wales? Plas Bodegroes Hotel on the wild Lly^ n Peninsula in north west Wales.

“Burnett Davies Lettings are a specialist residential lettings and property management company.”

What do you do to relax? Gardening, shooting and sport. Do you have a pet hate? Red tape. Favourite music? I am very open minded about music with a wide range of tastes. What are your future plans for Burnett Davies Lettings Due to our direct investment in property and our expertise in managing larger portfolios we are constantly being asked to act for more and more clients who require that particular area of expertise. Sum Burnett Davies up in three words? Professional, Dynamic, Established. ❧ 66 ❧
