Arbuthnot Opticians Eyes on the prize Barry opticians Arbuthnot recently held a Beautiful Eyes competition in their newsletter, Insight. They were inundated with so many pictures of children with the most beautiful eyes, that they found it hard to choose the winners, so they called on the creative team at Vale Life to take on the task. Needless to say, the decision wasn’t easy for us either but eventually, after much deliberation, the winning eyes were chosen. Congratulations to Thomas Johnson who won an iPod for his stunning eyes. Second place to Ellie-Mae Rose who, along with her party, will enjoy an Ultimate Party at Barry Island’s Quasar and third prize went to Keeley Jones who won a £25 WH Smith voucher.
“It was a tough decision but the striking long eyelashes and cute freckles of Thomas made him a winner in our eyes.”

Ty Hapus offers support to families Alzheimers disease is gruelling and terrifying and it takes a terrible toll on the carers, as Justine Pickering knows only too well. Her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers at 55. It was why she, along with help, is setting up Ty Hapus, which will offer support to families dealing with dementia. “Alzheimers is not a natural part of the ageing process, but a severe and debilitating brain disease like many others,” said Justine. “Ty Hapus will be a model for the rest of the UK, and will show how to look after younger people with Alzheimers Disease in an elegant and age appropriate manner.” The team at Leekes of Llantrisant, and Hamptons in Penarth have helped design Ty Hapus. The front part of the building offers daily respite to those with Alzheimers and, just as importantly, to the loved ones who look after them at home. The rear of Ty Hapus will house a drop in cafe, on a New England theme designed by Andy at Hamptons, and will offer support to families dealing with dementia.
Photograph courtesy of Barry & District News www.barryanddistrictnews.co.uk
We’ve had a state-of-the-art coffee machine donated, so it’s lovely that everything is top notch and that the carers can really relax and enjoy some time out while their loved ones are cared for next door. There is also a therapy and counselling room, a cosy hair salon, and offices for the support workers and manager. The front of Ty Hapus houses a drawing room, dining and activity room and its own gorgeous little kitchen. The main respite area has been entirely designed by Leekes with an elegant country house hotel feel by Dawn and Sian at Leekes, and it will look amazing. Leekes have been unbelievably generous through the whole project.”

Brain Tumour Trust makes a difference In the UK more children and people under the age of 40 die of a brain tumour than any other cancer. There are more than 120 different types of brain tumour which makes diagnosis very difficult. Vale Life spoke to Nia Jones about her experience. “Two years ago I was involved in a road traffic accident and taken to hospital for further investigation of my injuries. During an MRI Scan they discovered that I had a benign growth in the brain stem, and due to its location the risk of a conducting a biopsy or undergoing surgery to remove the growth was considered too high risk. I was referred to the Neurosurgery department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where I have received excellent care.” Brain tumours are indiscriminate in the people they affect: young or old, male or female, with no regard to race. The prognosis is dependent on the type of tumour and its location in the brain; even a benign brain tumour can be life threatening. What’s more a benign tumour may become cancerous over time. Radiation therapy and some drugs can prolong life, but there is no cure. Investment into basic laboratory research could start to change this. If you would like to make a donation to the Brain Tumour Trust please contact www.braintumourresearch.org.

Unearthing the Vale’s archaeological mysteries The Neolithic sites of Tinkinswood and St Lythan’s in the Vale of Glamorgan have long been landmarks associated with an era shrouded in the mists of time. An innovative Cadw funded Community Archaeology project, in partnership with Archaeology Wales, hopes to shed new light on these iconic sites. The project, which includes scientific excavations around Tinkinswood and at St Lythan’s for the very first time, will have the community at its heart. A local group led by the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers will take part in vegetation clearance, followed by a team of community volunteers assisting with the excavations, in a bid to enhance understanding and interpretation of these monuments and enthuse a younger generation in archaeology.
Passionate about the Vale We are independent. We live in the Vale. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Use it or lose it Business is the very lifeblood of any community. Without business, villages have no heart, towns have no centre and cities have no soul. Please support the businesses who advertise in Vale Life - without them there’d be no Vale Life magazine. ❧ 10 ❧
Excavation at the impressive Neolithic remains of Tinkinswood burial chamber originally took place in 1914. The remains of 50 people were originally found inside the chamber: men, women and children. The monument is aligned length-ways towards the rising sun to the east and the curve of the forecourt may suggest that it was built to catch and hold the rays of the morning sun. St Lythan’s burial chamber, like Tinkinswood, is known as a CotswoldSevern style tomb. It dates back some 6000 years to a time when farming was introduced and when people learned how to grow and produce, rather than hunt and gather their food. This period is regarded as one of the biggest changes in human history. But, perhaps most significantly, these communities began to build tombs like the one at St Lythan’s. The excavations are open to members of the public for site tours at weekends during November and December. Full details can be found at: http://tinkinswoodarchaeology.wordpress.com

To reward the animals that did come, Buddha named a year after each of them in the order that they arrived, starting with the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The coming year will be the year of the Dragon and once again there will be a flamboyant performance from the Kung Foo team.
The date of Chinese New Year changes every year with the lunar cycle and the Chinese calendar follows a twelve year pattern with each year named after an animal. The story goes that Buddha (or the Jade Emperor) invited all of the animals to join him for a New Year celebration, but only twelve animals turned up.

Plotting in The Potted Pig The Potted Pig is one of those restaurants that is truly a rare find. The food’s great, the decor is stylish and considered without being ‘over designed’ and the staff are attentive and friendly. Michelin stars aside (everyone seems overly obsessed with them these days), The Potted Pig ticks all the boxes. Brought to you by the same team that runs the North Star, The Potted Pig is tucked away in a spacious basement beneath Zizzi on Cardiff’s bustling High Street - you’d probably walk past the discreet signage. On arrival, they offer a wide selection of gins (and other drinks) as an aperitif but I chose to finish my meal with a White Russian instead. The Potted Pig has a more than competent selection of wines and cocktails so you’re sure to find something you’ll like.
“From the moment we entered The Potted Pig, it had something special.”
Our starters were excellent - my wife enjoyed a very fine globe artichoke with garlic butter which was perfectly cooked and a ham hock with salad leaves set my taste buds up beautifully for what was to come. With starters from £5 and mains from £8.50, a meal for two isn’t going to break the bank and, although we dined in the evening, I can see The Potted Pig being popular with business people at lunchtimes. On to the main course. My wife loves fish and her mullet couldn’t have been cooked better - moist and rustic. My roast chicken with duck fat potatoes and spring greens was utterly divine. I pray at the altar of roast chicken regularly but if I’d stumbled on the best country kitchen in northern France, I suspect I wouldn’t have tasted better.
“The Potted Pig is truly a rare find... the kind of space that inspires.” Our desserts rounded off an excellent evening. Eaton Mess for my good lady while I enjoyed a creamy and light panacotta complemented by the sharpness of fresh gooseberries. As I mentioned earlier, in the end I had to succumb to a White Russian which was equally creamy and morish. Of course it isn’t perfect, what restaurant is? Okay, I thought the gents’ toilet was a bit small, but a nagging voice in my head keeps saying. “Tell them how cool it is. Tell them how ‘French’ the food is. Tell them how much you enjoyed it. Tell them the staff are superb.” Truthfully, The Potted Pig is hard to fault overall. To sum up, I like The Potted Pig a lot. From the moment we entered it had something special. Business people will love it here. For a couple of hours we left the recession behind and it felt like anything was possible. The kind of space that inspires - the kind of place where the next big idea could be created, where dreams become reality, where revolutions begin. Believe me, we left feeling much better for the experience.

There’s a buzz around Barry after a new café and deli opened on Thomson Street. With a dedicated fan base on Facebook and twitter chatter to match, The Little Blue Deli is the talk of the town.
INTO THE BLUE Vale Life caught up with busy owner, Jonathan, over a skinny, double-hit, decaffeinated latte with a shot of vanilla. Congratulations on opening. How’s business? Honestly, it’s been quite overwhelming really. I hoped that we’d just tick over in the early months and word would get round but business has grown fast. How would you describe The Little Blue Deli? I suppose it’s part deli, part café, part take-away. I think it’s different things to different people. Breakfast time is popular and we have groups of ladies that lunch here regularly. Lots of locals and office workers use us for takeaway - sandwiches, baguettes, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Young mums pop in with babies and older mums drop by after they’ve dropped the children off at school. It’s a real mixed bag but all of our customers really appreciate the ambience - things like our freshly cut flowers, the smell of baking and the relaxed, stylish interior.
You mentioned cakes. You’re getting quite a reputation for them. Yes... again, something that just seemed to take off. I think people really like home-made cakes – ours have certainly become popular. We make giant cup cakes as well as the standard size. The giant ones are really popular as gifts and the children really love them. They say we eat with our eyes so creating something that looks delicious to customers makes perfect sense. We make celebration cakes too. We’ve catered for quite a few children’s parties and we’re also becoming quite popular with companies wanting sandwiches and buffets for meetings and conferences - I hadn’t expected that. We’re even catering for a wedding next year! Who designed the interior? I had a vision... but honestly, it just sort of came together. It’s a mix between 1970’s retro and Cath Kidston with a shot of Swedish chic. It seems to work. People like the cool blues and warm oranges and reds. It’s vibrant and restful all at the same time but our customers like it so that’s all that matters. Why do you think people have really taken to The Little Blue Deli? We treat people with respect. We’re friendly and welcoming... isn’t that what people want? That’s what I want whenever I go somewhere. We’re also open seven days a week so people can come in early for breakfast or later for an evening meal. We pride ourselves on presentation, cleanliness and good service. It’s what matters to us and our customers. What are your plans for the future? It’s evolving all the time. We were open six days but now we’re open on a Sunday too. We’d like to expand upstairs - we’ll see how it goes.

Dr Manny Srivastava, founder and clinical director of Nucleus Healthcare, explains how the latest exciting development in medical technology is helping people lose up to five stones in weight over the course of a year.
A NEW YOU “Weight loss has always been a challenge for me. I have tried it all.”
“You know what I’m talking about – diet, exercise and pills. It either doesn’t work or it doesn’t last.” “Even if I follow a diet carefully – it was so difficult, and eventually I failed, miserably. I knew that I needed help in controlling my appetite – but diet pills don’t work so well.” When you hear people talking about losing weight, it is clear that many people struggle with a succession of yo-yo diets and plans that simply do not work for them. Sound familiar? The importance of good diet and exercise are well known but obesity is a growing problem across the UK, increasing the risk of serious and life threatening medical conditions. For a significant number of people, sticking to a healthy lifestyle proves too hard. Whether it’s a lack of willpower or motivation, people struggle with managing their weight and often need extra help.
Over the last 25 years the intragastric balloon has been the most effective non-surgical method of treating obesity, with more than 100,000 patients achieving an average weight loss of more than 15kg during the first six months of treatment. Nucleus Healthcare, the private gastroenterology hospital in Newport, has been using these intragastric balloons with great results. This year sees the arrival of a new adjustable gastric balloon – the Spatz. This is the next generation of balloon and is a non-surgical, non-drug therapy which does not involve a general anaesthetic. The main limitation with the traditional gastric balloon has been that it is impossible to adjust the volume in the balloon during the six month treatment. After years of research, the new Spatz adjustable gastric balloon has overcome that issue to offer a safer, more effective treatment lasting up to 12 months. The adjustable gastric balloon is filled with saline and sits in the stomach, drastically reducing the patient’s appetite by making the stomach feel full for up to a year. The resulting average weight loss using the new balloon is between four and five stones.
“Whether it’s a lack of willpower or motivation, people struggle with managing their weight.” The procedure is suitable for patients aged over 18 with a body mass index of 27 or more. A deflated balloon is inserted into the stomach using an endoscope under local anaesthetic. The balloon is then filled with saline to partially fill the stomach. The ability to vary the volume in the Spatz balloon over the course of 12 months improves success and reduces side effects. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and the patient can go home with a relative or friend after about two hours. Regular follow-up appointments with a dietician and specialist nurse provide guidance and monitor progress, so that when the balloon is removed the patient is better able to manage diet, appetite and exercise as part of their everyday lifestyle. Aftercare with individual counselling and group seminars continues for as long as the patient feels necessary.
“The resulting average weight loss is between four and five stones.” For more information about the adjustable gastric balloon and how to fund treatment with 0% APR finance over up to 36 months, contact Nucleus Healthcare on 01633 815 900 or visit the website www.nucleushealthcare.co.uk Next day consultation appointments are available on request. (Patients must be aged over 18 with a Body Mass Index score of 27 or more. Interest free finance is subject to application. Terms and conditions apply.)

After their engagement most couples spend considerable time planning the perfect wedding. Not so for Jill James and Ewart Needham of Southerndown. They gave themselves ten weeks! Vale Life spoke to the happy couple about the preparations for their big day and the event itself.
PERFECT DAY How long did you plan the wedding? Ten weeks! I do love a challenge. I thought what better way to celebrate Ewarts 70th than by getting married, one big celebration all rolled into one. It was certainly a lesson on how to spend a fortune in a short space of time, but what fun! The Venue Well it always helps I suppose to have your own venue! I could not think of a better place to have a wedding than West Farm - the views and sunsets are stunning. I wanted to return to Wales and, as soon as I saw West Farm in 2003, I was hooked I just had to buy it. It has taken me seven years to totally renovate the property, a much bigger project than I anticipated, but well worth it. We are inundated with requests for weddings and we now have a wedding licence, but I wanted us to be the first.

Jill and Ewart’s wedding suppliers Why did you chose Clive Ranger? I just loved their selection of rings. I told them what I was looking for and when I went in a tray arrived with exactly what I had requested, but also a brand new selection of Canadian Diamonds which blew me away. Not only did I have a wedding ring but chose an engagement ring at the same time. The Dress I had a vision of doing the style of Scarlet O’Hara from Gone With The Wind in a rich burgundy and that is what I set out to find. A lot of places thought I was mad, a dress in seven weeks, never, you need six months! However I went into High Society just to look although they had no burgundy. The first dress I tried on was what I bought, but in fact I actually had two pieces as I bought the lace coat as well. High Society could not have been more helpful. They rang Alan Hannah, the designer, to see if they could make the dress in such a short time, which they agreed to, and Arwen got their lady Rhiannon to sort out the beautiful lace coat. I felt like a million dollars on the day and I cannot recommend everyone at High Society enough.
We’ve gathered together some of the very best wedding suppliers in South Wales in this supplement to help make your choice that much easier.
WIN!
The lead up to the day. We had over 200 guests on the day and as our function room wasn’t completed at that point, Alpine Marquees supplied the wonderful marquee. Happy all was in place, I sent the men off to the hotel the night before to enjoy themselves and Ewart could celebrate his birthday.
Tell us about the proposal. Which One? Ewart first proposed in January 1989 and he has been asking yearly ever since! So when he asked on St. David’s day this year he nearly fell of the chair when I said yes. I just knew it was now or never, the time was right.

After an incredibly romantic proposal, where else could Jenny Walton and Ian Huckstep get married but the equally romantic Fonmon Castle? Jenny tells us about their perfect wedding day.
FAIRYTALE WEDDING How did Ian propose and where? Ian and I went up to the Lake District in the Spring of 2009 and spent a few magical days tramping round lakes and up and down fells. On 1 March (St David’s Day just a coincidence!) we went for a big walk from Borrowdale Valley towards Great Gable and Scafell Pike. The mist was quite low on the fells and, when we reached the pointof-no-return ‘crossroads’ and stopped for lunch (in a small hail storm!), I suggested it would be mad to attempt any of the big peaks. What was the point? We wouldn’t be able to see anything when we got there anyway. Ian seemed pretty disappointed but I just put it down to his throw-caution-tothe-wind sense of adventure, because there was no way I was going to attempt a potentially lethal mountain with only three hours of daylight left!
So, we took a lower loop round, up to the snow line and, after a mini-snowball fight, stopped for rest before heading back down the valley. I was sitting there waxing lyrical about how some coffee and a little bit of chocolate can make all the difference, all the while thinking, “If you’re going to do it, this would be the perfect moment.”
Then Ian said, “Shall we head down then?” (“Drat,” I thought. “I’m just going to have a stroppy stomp all the way down the valley, and be mildly annoyed all evening, and I won’t be able to say it’s because you didn’t propose to me on the most perfect opportunity there has ever been!”)
Ian continued, “But before we do...” and then he got down on one knee, produced this tiny little leather box, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Once I’d managed to pull myself together I of course said a resounding “Yes!” Why did you choose Fonmon Castle? For a number of reasons. Annie, the wedding planner, was so welcoming (and was no end of help and support, all seemingly effortless!). The house and grounds are so beautiful. The Library, where the wedding ceremony and later the wedding breakfast, was held, has a lovely intimate atmosphere. But, most importantly, it felt like a home, rather than a corporate conveyor belt. We were allowed to put all our own touches to it – family antique tablecloths for the reception tables, croquet on the lawn etc.
Did you look at other venues? Yes, we did quite a lot of research online and then visited a shortlist. How was the day? It was wonderful. The weather was glorious. It was a perfect Spring day, as I’d hoped, and was sunny and warm enough to have the reception on the lawn - it only just started to rain as we got into the car at the end of the night. The food was fantastic, and the ceilidh was great fun with everyone joining in. At one point in the evening, I looked up and people were sitting all the way up the stairs watching the dancing in the hall - it was just like a grand house party, a real family wedding. Where did you honeymoon? A “Grand Tour” of Italy – from Venice to Florence to Amalfi to Rome, then Sardinia for a week and then a week at home.

Chantele, a journalist, and Jonathan, a bar manager, both 24 from Neath, are childhood sweethearts who married on 8th May 2010 after being together for five years. They had a black and white wedding with an art deco theme. To save money and add a personal touch, they decided to DIY as much of the wedding as they could. Here’s their story.
I DO (IT YOURSELF) The Proposal Having known each other through comprehensive school at Dwr-Y-Felin, Chantele and Jonathan finally started dating when they were 17 and studying at Neath Port Talbot College. “I think we knew we were meant to be together very early on in our relationship, so getting engaged after only ten months together wasn’t a big surprise,” says Chantele. Jon proposed whilst the pair were in Kentucky, USA, for a family wedding. “It happened in the National Park in Florence, Cincinnati, in the snow, in front of a giant stone turtle!” laughs Chantele. “It was a surprise when it happened, even though I knew Jon intended to propose whilst we were in America as we had both discussed it with my parents before we left.” The couple used Chantele’s grandmother’s engagement ring, as Chantele had inherited it and had always wanted it to be her own engagement ring one day.
“I had always wanted a black and white wedding with a vintage feel and the art deco era lent itself very well to that.”
The Planning “We both wanted to wait until we had finished university before planning our wedding,” says Jon. “If I’m honest, I didn’t really plan much of our wedding, Chantele and her mum Julie organised 99% of it themselves with my occasional nod of approval.” Chantele, like most women, knew what she wanted her wedding day to be like. “I’m a little different, so my wedding day had to be a little bit different too, and I was very specific with what I wanted. Once mum and I started planning, we realised we could make a lot of things ourselves, and that way I could get exactly what I wanted while adding my own personal touch.”
I had always wanted a black and white wedding with a vintage feel and the art deco era lent itself very well to that. Luckily mum and I are both quite creative so we were able to make all the stationery, table centres and the bridesmaids’ jewellery and hair pieces using materials bought on eBay. I also designed all the dresses with the help of Julie Mayers, and mum and I designed the wedding cake which was made by Janet Saith.” Jon says the hardest thing to choose was the photographer. “We must have looked through 200 websites of local photographers before we finally made the decision to book Mark Button, and we are so glad that we did because the photos turned out really well. Just what we wanted.”
The Wedding They both say the day went perfectly. “Not one hitch really,” said Chantele. “I was told I was the calmest bride the photographer or vicar had ever seen. But I am generally a very laid-back person. Jon was a little nervous during the ceremony and before his speech but that was more to do with having to talk in front of everyone.”
Mid-day entertainment was provided by singer songwriter Rob Cross, while the evening guests were entertained by The Mojo’s soul and blues band. “We decided upon Tom Jones’ ‘We Got Love’ as our first dance,” explains Chantele. “The song didn’t have any significant meaning itself but I love his music and Jon likes a bit of Tom too, and we finally picked this song as the lyrics were perfect. It was a totally perfect day. Everyone we loved was there and it was exactly how I dreamed it would be.” The Honeymoon “We don’t really like the heat too much, or beaches, or clubbing, so that cancelled out a lot of places, and we really wanted to go somewhere different,” says Jon. “We wanted to experience a totally new culture and go somewhere you aren’t likely to go on a normal holiday so I suggested China,” says Chantele. “Luckily Jon agreed and we started looking for the best deal.” They eventually booked a tour with Wendy Wu Tours, www.wendywutours.co.uk and spent a month travelling central and northern China. “We waited until November to go away, as the weather would be cooler and it was out of peak season so we would avoid any crowds and queues,” says Jon. “Although we were on a group tour, we still got to spend plenty of time alone, and we had the most amazing trip. It has given us a bit of the travel bug and we already have a list of places in mind.”

The wedding is impending, and everywhere you’ve looked looks tired and full of polyester. Well, look no further, Hawkes Essentials in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade have decided to join the world of hire.
A HIRE LOVE
Although you won’t find a vast selection of colour bells and whistles, what you will find is new stock and classical morningwear (in 100% wool).
Hawkes Essentials will also tailor everything to fit, making sure that your outfit looks great on your wedding day. “The reason we have taken on this new avenue of service is because a friend of mine got married last year. He went to three major wedding hire businesses in Cardiff, none of which could help him at short notice, so he came to me and said ‘Russ, you have to start hiring wedding suits,’” said Russell Scott-Lawson, owner of Hawkes Essentials.
“The rest is history. We don’t want to do anything other than the classic outfit of tailcoat, grey waistcoat and striped trouser. After all, that’s what Hugh Grant wore in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral!”

When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.
What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.
“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”
Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance. What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift. GARDEN OF CARDIFF The Vale Marketing Group was established seven years ago by a small group of business owners who recognised the need for an association to represent businesses that are fully or partially reliant on visitors and tourism in the county. This includes B&Bs, self catering, camping sites, hotels, pubs, restaurants, attractions, activity providers, retailers and services such as taxis and tour guides. The group then created the website www.gardenofcardiff.com and all members’ businesses are featured on the site. This has proven to be a very effective marketing tool. The group ethos is, ‘Let them know we are here, invite them in and then give them a great time.’
Partnership, Wales Association of SelfCatering Operators, Tourism Wales and partnerships working with other Regional Tourism Associations
The VMG works closely with all the associations within the Welsh tourism industry and the current chair represents tourism in the Vale both regionally and across Wales with the goal of promoting the VMG members and the Vale to a wider audience.
Members have regular opportunities to network, exchange ideas and develop joint marketing strategies. The group also has representation on The South East Wales Tourism Forum, Small Service Sector Forum, Creative Rural Communities, Capital Regional Tourism, Wales Tourism Alliance, Visit Wales, Southern Wales Attraction

Formerly known as ‘Farthings’, the restaurant was sold in 2009 but was bought back exactly a year later by long-standing owner Natalie and her husband Justin after the interim business failed. The restaurant was resurrected with a new name and an emphasis on providing the traditional, home-made food for which it was famed. That, along with the relaxed, cosy environment has once again proved a winning formula as the restaurant is busier than ever, particularly on a Sunday.

VALE STYLE Designer style for autumn and winter CARDIFF
Modern interpretations of Barbour classics, Heritage Originals are fun, authentic pieces with use of bright colours across the collection and co-ordinated knitwear and shirts. Heritage Fashion takes its inspiration from the best of the Barbour’s archives in biker, military and equestrian themes.
Barbour ladies collection comes to Pavilion Ladies are in for a treat this autumn/winter as Pavilion are stocking a range of jackets from Barbour, the brand which oozes elegance and sophistication.
The celebration of the 75th anniversary continues with new bright and bold colours adding an injection of colour to chic biker jackets and mercury shine quilts. The show-stopper is the ladies National Trials jacket in a black wax cotton with bold gold studs. The Mercury Bomber jacket will ensure that you stand out in the crowd. Cropped style wax and quilts pay homage to Barbour’s equestrian roots. At the heart of Barbour is the Lifestyle collection blending tradition with modernity.

Taking inspiration from all aspects of Barbour’s heritage – biker, military, equestrian and country, the range exudes countrified femininity with a modern interpretation on traditional country styles. Muted tones and colour palettes compliment the subtle country influences on waxes, quilts and traditional tartans. Rugged wear is contrasted with more refined fits and fabrications offering a choice of casual, relaxed country clothing and smarter longer length commuter outerwear designed for today’s modern traveller. What’s going on with this season? Here we are, full of winter stock and people are cruising around in shorts and flipflops (this was written in our unseasonal mini heatwave!). I have consequently been doing my rain dance every morning and finally the weather has changed. On to winter wear, and what a fine selection we have for you. After the great success of the tweed jacket last year, we have designed a few more for you, with bright checks and linings. These jackets really are an absolute must with a pair of jeans and chunky brogues. Chessham Blake has also been up to his bizzare creativeness, supplying us with frock coats, brighter than the sun. You can see Chris Evans wearing the shirts on the One Show. Sand and Without Prejudice have outdone themselves again. Jeans, shirts, trousers and jackets are quite simply unchallenged on the marketplace for style and quality. Local stylist, Sarah Jane Perez recently bought outfits for Tim Rhys Evans (Only Men Aloud), Jonathan Davies (World Cup) and Rhydian Roberts, currently all on our TV’s. ❧ 42 ❧

A carpenter by trade, Martyn Evans loves the building business. His company, Cardiff Orangeries, has an excellent reputation for designing and building some of the most stunning orangeries in South Wales. Vale Life meets the man with the…
SUNNY DISPOSITION Martyn’s enthusiasm for the building industry is quite infectious. Vale Life asked him about his business and why he loves his trade so much. How did you get into the business? I’ve always been very good with my hands so it made sense to get into a trade such as building and I love meeting people. I think that’s one of the best things about what I do. I meet some fabulous people through my work and I enjoy building things for them that change their lives for the better. Orangeries are hot property at the moment. How long have you provided this service? We’ve been established since 1990 as Whitchurch Windows and orangeries have been a core part of our business for the last five years. I felt that the design of modern extensions needed the benefit of glass to give light, but a built structure would be an advantage because of the benefits to insulation, ease of maintenance in the long term and the look and character could be sympathetic to the original property.
What services do you offer? Design, build and installation. The design process is establishes what the customer needs and to identify the right material for the work based on budget and purpose. Each job is different so might require uPVC, aluminium or wood.
What about aluminium? Aluminium is very much the material of the moment with its slim-line good looks. It’s light and it’s strong. It proves its quality by being the most commonly used product within the commercial industry and there is a multitude of colour options available.
Is uPVC the most popular? uPVC is a great product with plenty of choice of finishes - from coloured frames to a large selection of wood grain products. Yes, we use it a lot. It’s a good material and offers high levels of security and insulation. PVC is a great entry level when considering cost and speed of manufacture.
What’s your particular favourite material? I like wood. Timber is making quite a comeback. Its by far the best material in my opinion. All of our exterior products come pre-finished with the choice of colour that the customer has requested.
“The work carried out is ‘par excellence’. The quality of the materials is first class, and the installation extremely professional.” Mr & Mrs Bray
The reason for this is to cut down on the chance of surfaces not being weather proofed and that ensures the timber product will have the same life expectancy as uPVC and aluminium. Engineered timbers are also becoming more popular, this means the timber will be more stable, stronger and knot free. It’s also more eco-friendly. What’s the best way for a customer to begin the process if they’d like an orangery? If a customer contacts us and would like to discuss the ideas that they have regarding the project we’ll let them know very quickly if it’s at all possible. We will then develop a design that complements the customer’s lifestyle and that fits their budget. We’ll discuss the best sort of materials to be used so that the design fits in with the characteristics of the house and to ensure the finished orangery enhances the property. We’ll talk about lighting, discuss heating options and finishes. It’s better to have a clear vision before any building takes place.
❧ 48 ❧
Why do customers come to you? I’ve been in the business for twenty years and my reputation is everything so I always ensure that a client is clear about what they are getting and is completely happy with it. When designing an orangery it is important to get a feel for the whole house and the lifestyle of the customer, so the new building can enhance their life and create that special wow factor.
“The space created by the orangery transformed the existing room. The end result is so much more than we planned.” Mr & Mrs Davies Cardiff Orangeries (Whitchurch Windows) The Coach House, Whitchurch Common Cardiff CF14 1DW 029 2052 1675 www.cardifforangeries.co.uk

LA BELLA VITA With countless satisfied customers living the good life in beautifully designed kitchens and living spaces courtesy of SpaceFittingFurniture, you wouldn’t be surprised if owners Steve and Claire Bloom had designs on bedrooms.
❧ 51 ❧
When you talk to Steve and Claire, the one thing that comes across is their passion for design. Vale Life caught up with the couple at their design studio in Cardiff. Your reputation is for creating kitchens and living spaces. Why the move into bedrooms? STEVE We’ve been meaning to for a while. We have designed bedroom furniture for clients but it’s been based around our German kitchen furniture. We’ve been looking for the right bedroom furniture product for a while and have found an Italian company that manufactures the most beautiful bedroom furniture.
“Ultimately, it has to look beautiful and this new Italian range is gorgeous. Bellissima!”
What’s so special about this particular product? CLAIRE As a woman, I probably have a different perspective, but I think the devil is in the details. The finish, the look, when you touch the material you can feel the love that’s gone into the manufacturing. Italians are passionate about design. Their whole philosophy and ethos is driven by design and style. Look at Lamborghini and Ferrari, they’re much more than cars, they’re art. We want people to feel good when they walk into a bedroom that we’ve created we want it to lift their soul. Beautiful things have that effect. STEVE Claire’s absolutely right and, as a designer, I want the relationship between form and function to be seamless and this range is just so beautiful to work with. It’s versatile in every way. Whatever and however the customer wants to store or present their clothes, this product allows you the flexibility and practicality to design free of constraint. It’s an absolute joy to work with. What’s the next hot thing in bedroom design? CLAIRE I think people have cluttered lives so simplicity will be the order of the day. Women want everything out of sight but accessible. Men have different priorities I think. STEVE Absolutely, I think that applies to kitchens and living spaces too. This is the iPad age and I believe the integration of technology is going to be important. The skill is making sure that this is considered at the start of the design process. We take great care to discuss clients’ lifestyles with them; what they want from the end product, and will it meet their needs? CLAIRE Ultimately, it has to look beautiful and this new Italian range is gorgeous. Bellissima! ❧ 52 ❧

When only bespoke quality will do, Rathkey’s crafstmanship and service may be the right choice for you.
ONLY BESPOKE Vale Life spoke to owner Paul Rathkey to find out why customers choose him and what it is that makes Rathkey’s service so special.
Paul, what’s your role in Rathkey’s? I manage and organise a team of staff and ensure the safe and creative crafting of bespoke furniture to the client’s requirement. I meet clients at their homes or premises and discuss in detail what their options are and put forward ideas. Where did you train? Rycotewood College, where I gained a diploma in Furniture & Design.
“I was head hunted by David Linley Furniture.” The owner, of course, is Viscount Linley, the Queen’s nephew, and I worked there for the next ten years making fine bespoke furniture for some very rich and famous people. The furniture manufactured was fine inlay work and precise cabinet making! ❧ 54 ❧
Describe your typical day From the moment I arrive in work, at 8am most days, I begin by answering phonecalls and meet with the team to ensure they all have enough work to keep themselves busy through the day. I also have to make sure that all orders for materials are placed in plenty of time so that we have the correct stock and materials to complete the jobs we have. In between all of this I visit clients to discuss projects and, back on site, answer any enquiries and liaise with the team regarding any technical issues that may arise. Do you see any trends developing? Recently, the call for contemporary furniture as opposed to traditional furniture has been in higher demand, working with more oak and walnut furniture. A large proportion of our work is for bespoke kitchens in natural timber or hand-painted finishes.
“I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products.”
WILL DO Do you enjoy your job? I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products. I love the feel of the timber when the furniture is completed and enjoy seeing the faces of satisfied customers, many of whom have become firm friends. Who inspires you? My wife – she is my driving passion and supports me the most. What was your proudest moment? After the birth of my two beautiful children, Oliver and Lucy, it was making furniture for David Linley as the level of workmanship that had to be achieved was absolute perfection.
How do you get most of your work? We are pleased to say that we have had regular work and are very lucky that clients have highly recommended us to new potential customers, even allowing us to show clients their houses and the quality of work we produce. What do you do when you’re not creating beautiful furniture? We enjoy eating out and if we’re shopping on a Saturday afternoon in Cowbridge we’ll often pop into Bar 44 to relax with a refreshing drink and tapas food. I like to keep fit and enjoy running, swimming and cycling. What are your future plans? To continue to give an excellent service to our clients.
“I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products here at Rathkey’s.” ❧ 55 ❧

There’s no better feeling for a woman than a great shopping trip. By great, I mean an armful or two of shopping bags. I know I’m not on my own, as a recent study claims that many women will spend more than eight years of their lives shopping.
B HAPPY Investing in designer brands is all well and good if you have the bank balance of Coleen Rooney, but we all need that injection of happy, and you can make your money go further if you spend more wisely.
That was boutique owner Jodie Tanner’s thinking when she opened The Queen B boutique last year. “There’s no-one who loves their clothes and accessories more than me - that’s probably why I went into this business! But there’s nothing worse than spending a small fortune on the latest fashion items when they won’t be in next year. Our philosophy in The Queen B is that you can buy good quality clothing and accessories at affordable prices and look amazing,” says Jodie. “We’ve done our research and found brands that aren’t available on the High Street so you’re less likely to find your friends and colleagues in the same outfit.” The Queen B is best known for stocking the Uttam Boutique and Yumi brands which are inspired by Eastern culture. The designs embrace the traditions and beauty of Nepal, India, and Japan, using techniques such as patchwork, tie-dye, applique, hand-stitched beading and embroidery, combined with printed knitwear, chiffons, and silks.
These brands are both ‘fast fashion’ labels, which mean they provide the most on-trend styles, colours, and fabrics. Other brands available are Uttam Boutique, Yumi, Indulgence, Closet, 101 Idees, Lulu Paris, Pink Berry Paris, Glamorous, Juju & Christine, Emporium, Happy Love, KDK and Neslay.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Take good care of yourself with Vale Life’s guide to healthcare in the Vale HENSOL
Vale Resort Spa A new spa, a new you Following the recent complete transformation at the Vale Spa at the luxurious Vale Resort, we spoke to regular spa-goer Hannah Williams on what she thought of the new spa and her Sundari treatment. Who are you and what is your profession? Hannah Williams and I’m Partner at Hugh James Solicitors in Cardiff. Was this your first visit to the spa or do you visit regularly? No, I have been here quite a few times before but I haven’t been since the spa has had its amazing refurbishment – and the Sundari treatments are a recent addition to the spa too so it was a new experience for me. Do you visit alone or with friends? If I’ve had a particularly busy or stressful week at work then, perhaps, I’ll decide to treat myself to a bit of pampering and visit on my own but generally I tend to go with friends. For the last few years my close girlfriends and I have all chipped in to buy each other a spa voucher for the Vale for each others’ birthdays. Then we all book in for a treatment and spend a pampering day here – we all love it, it’s just such a nice way to spend time together.
What treatments do you generally have? I love having facials and last time I had the Clarins Luxury Elixir Facial which is one that’s exclusive to the Vale Spa. It’s absolutely the best facial I’ve ever had. They concentrate on your back and scalp as well as your face so it’s much more than just a straightforward facial and it really is fabulous! What treatment did you have for the review? I had a treatment called Odati – it’s one of the new Sundari treatments. Who was your therapist? Natalie. Talk me through the treatment? When I arrived I actually had a ‘dosha’ consultation with Natalie where she got me to fill in a form about aspects of my personality. It is something that they do specifically with Sundari treatments and helps the therapists to determine exactly the right treatment for you. Then, before the Odati even started, Natalie treated me to a wonderful foot scrub which she told me was traditional for any ‘honoured’ guest in ancient Eastern traditions! She then gave me a full back massage, three different back cleanses and a deep exfoliation, before she applied a neem and green tea back mask. Whilst the back mask was on she did a massage on my legs which was lovely. The treatment finished with a fantastically relaxing face and scalp massage.
Did she put you at your ease? Yes, she was absolutely lovely. We had a little chat before we started and she gave me a good overview of what she was going to do which was good as the Sundari concept is new to me. However once she started she just let me lie back, relax, and enjoy the treatment which was perfect. Were you happy with the results? Yes, it was fabulous! I was honestly so relaxed I was in a bit of a trance for a couple of hours. Luckily I was able to go straight from the treatment room into the relaxation zone where I just chilled out for a bit longer. They have changed the whole area since I was here last and they now have a ‘water’ zone where you can lie on waterbeds which were amazing, I want one for my house now! How much did the treatment cost and do you think it was value for money? It was £70 which I think was very reasonable considering it was a 70 minute treatment. Would you go again? Absolutely! Would you recommend the spa to your colleagues, family etc. Yes – in fact I’ve already booked a date in with the girls for our next spa day!

LIGHT AS A FEATHER Pauline Quirke, star of Emmerdale and the 90s hit show Birds of a Feather, has lost weight on LighterLife after being told by her doctor one of her hips had worn away due to her weight. Pauline has battled with her weight for several years and after the doctor said she needed a hip replacement in 2009 she decided it was time to lose weight and keep it off. She had previously lost weight two years ago but when she came off the diet the weight went back on again. Pauline says her weight gain has been gradual over 51 years, “There hasn’t been a year when I’ve binged, my weight just slowly crept up. I’ve never really thought of myself as the fat girl and my weight has never affected my career but I knew it was time to change.” The well known actress is feeling and looking fantastic and has been splashed over national newspapers and magazines recently showing off her new slim figure. She has featured in the Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Best, Woman, Good Housekeeping and Take it Easy. Local Weight-Management Counsellor Mike Hawkins in Barry is excited about Pauline’s weight loss and said, “It’s great to have Pauline on board as an ambassador for LighterLife. She has lost such a substantial amount of weight and is telling everyone how good she feels. LighterLife is a great way of losing weight and keeping it off, and if you have one or more stone to lose there is a programme to suit you. The Foodpacks are nutritionally balanced and have 100% of the recommended daily allowance for key vitamins and minerals.” Emma Barraclough
Claire Lamputt, LighterLife WeightManagement Counsellor in Bridgend, has a client who has halved her weight called Emma Barraclough who says, “Pauline has been a great inspiration to me while on LighterLife, she looks absolutely fantastic! I’ve seen her in magazines and also on This Morning talking about how great she feels - I feel exactly the same. Since losing weight with LighterLife my life has completely changed for the better. My reason and motivation for wanting to lose weight was simple – my son. I came to realise after having him that I could not continue being the way I was. If I did I would not have lived to see my son grow up. I was eating myself in to an early grave! Since losing my weight I have completed my university course and have decided on a totally new and different career path. I would not have made this decision without the balance that LighterLife has helped to give me and my life. I am now more active and can actually catch up with my son. I have had people not recognising me since the weight loss, including family members. I feel fantastic and that’s all thanks to the support of my group and my Counsellor, Claire.” If you have one stone or more to lose why not contact Claire Lamputt (Bridgend) on 01656 720717 or Mike Hawkins (Barry) on 01446 738846 or visit www.lighterlife.com Emma with her son

THE EYES HAVE IT Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry has a clientele that is growing by the day. Their philosophy is to invest in the delivery of excellent service to their clients. Vale Life talks to just a few of those clients to see why this particular opticians is their practice of choice.
I have been registered with the practice for over fifty years - long before Ted Arbuthnot acquired the business. With your sight being of the utmost importance, you have to have full trust and confidence in your optician. I certainly have this with Ted, who has monitored my eyes since taking over the practice.
I was having problems with my eye after an accident with a nail. I had been going back and forth to another high street opticians as I felt that my sight was getting worse. They kept saying that there was no problem. Arbuthnot’s were recommended to me by a cousin who went there and saw James.
It’s all about relationships, and mine is excellent with all the staff, especially Ted and Sharron, who have become more like friends over the years. In May of this year, my wife (who is also a patient of Arbuthnot’s) and I, moved to Macclesfield in Cheshire However it is still our intention to remain with Arbuthnots, travelling back when necessary.
James had noticed a tumour behind his eye that had gone undiagnosed elsewhere. As I wasn’t happy with the treatment I had been receiving, I made an appointment with James. He noticed the damage to my eye and suggested that I wear contact lenses to protect the eye while it healed. The contact lens now protects the eye and is also very comfortable.

I have been a patient of Arbuthnot Optometrists for the past forty years and, having worked in television production for HTV, S4C, and other companies all my working life, it was essential that I regularly kept a check on my eyesight, because of the risk of congenital myopia. Owing to Ted Arbuthnot’s expertise and use of the very latest scanning equipment, I have been referred to the Opthamology Clinic at University College Hospital on more than one occasion, which I know, has saved my sight.
I too made an appointment and straight away James picked up the fact that I had cataracts. I’ve since had those treated. I have total confidence in Arbuthnot’s and would recommend them highly.
My daughter has also chosen to bring her eight year-old and also her four year-old twin daughters to be checked at Arbuthnot’s, because she knows they will have the same excellent care that I have enjoyed over the years. Mr. Arbuthnot, I can’t thank you enough.

When we’re looking a bit tired, we nip off to a beauty salon or spa for a few treatments so why shouldn’t we do it for our cars?
I bought my wife this beautiful blue Mini Cooper eight years ago for Christmas - bit extravagant I know but it was well deserved, trust me, and the only brand new car she’s ever owned.
MINI
Over the years I’ve asked if she’d like to change it but on the two occasions we seriously went looking for a replacement, we came right back to the Mini Cooper and, quite honestly, there didn’t seem much point selling a perfectly good, low mileage Mini only to replace it with another on finance. However, since 2003, the Mini had picked up several scrapes and little dings. Someone had reversed into the rear bumper at some point (and not owned up) and while not serious damage, it was noticeable. The paintwork was generally a little tired all over and the black parts on the car had faded to a rather dull grey. All in all, this once stunning little number was sadly past its best.
“To say this eight year old Mini looks as new would be an understatement. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the number plate, you couldn’t tell it from new. It’s gorgeous again and my wife is delighted.” ❧ 66 ❧
Chatting to a friend, he suggested getting a cost for sprucing it up at Davies Motor Company. They were Bentley and Aston Martin approved and said that this was the place companies take their second-hand vehicles to have them prepared for resale. Great idea, I thought, and immediately made an appointment (not telling my wife, thinking this was another opportunity to give her a nice suprise). I was given a quotation and agreed to drop the Mini off - the work would take a week. I fabricated a plausible story about the Mini needing some mechanical repairs.
MAKEOVER A week later, we picked up our ‘brand new’ Mini from Davies Motor Company. I say brand new because that’s what it is essentially. The car has been completely transformed. The rear bumper was repaired and resprayed and the rest of the car machine-polished and all the little dents, scratches and scrapes miraculously removed.
The alloy wheels which were covered in scratches and scrapes from too many brushes with kerbs are now like new. All the dull black mirror bases and wiper arms have been sprayed and are like new. Add in a new set of number plates, wiper blades and wheel centres and you’re looking at a car that looks as good as when it came off the production line. To say this eight-year-old Mini looks as new would be an understatement. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the number plate, you couldn’t tell it from new. It’s gorgeous again and my wife is delighted!
“Why not go for a makeover? In aesthetic terms, it’s superb and in financial terms it makes perfect sense.”
In aesthetic terms, the makeover is superb and in financial terms it makes perfect sense. These are austere times so if you have a car that you love that is essentially good for its age, but looks a little tired, why not go for a makeover rather than a full replacement. Our Mini has more or less stopped depreciating so we’re enjoying free motoring now bar ongoing wear and tear. The whole exercise cost less than £1,000 and has almost certainly added that in value and there’s no reason we couldn’t go back to Davies Motor Company in a few years for another quick makeover just to keep on top of things. It’s certainly in our diary. ❧ 67 ❧

Allan Blair Beaton talks about Google+ Here we go again! Another social media tool that is supposed to be the next ‘big thing’. Google+ is the latest social media innovation for staying more connected and having more control of your information. It makes your life easier by adding some new ways of filtering the information you receive as well as the information you share. Do you use Google, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Earth etc? Well, maybe you might want to have a look. This is what I have found so far. What is Google+? Google+ is actually a series of tools to help you stay connected with the people you care about and it includes a suite of comprehensive social tools to make your life easier and they’re called Circles, Hangouts, Huddle, and Sparks. Google+ represents some of the latest ways that Google is going social. But it’s not just about adding another “Me Too” kind of social network. They are truly innovating the way it all works and making our lives easier. To me it
represents many of the reasons Google owns the internet world. They deliver what people want and they make it easy to do. If everyone is trying to rank as high on page one of Google as possible, would it not be a good idea to engage here too? More in the next issue as we see how Vale Life gets on with Google+. These are challenging times for businesses and the clever ones are doing everything they can to reduce overheads. The success of The Business Centre in Barry shows that quite a few are making…
THE SMART MOVE
The Business Centre in Barry understands that businesses are currently operating in the toughest economic climate of the modern age and that all companies are looking to make cutbacks without losing that five star service.
This has made the industry even more competitive than it was a couple of years ago. With luxurious office suites in the centre of Cardiff and a number of office facilities becoming available in all areas of Wales, how important is it to operate your business from the city centre?
The Sun Newspaper printed the following article on Tuesday 8th of March 2011, confirming that travelling time to the workplace has increased since 2006, how would you and your employees feel about reducing your commute to the workplace everyday?
The Business Centre provides modern, flexible serviced office space with excellent customer service and support facilities, allowing you more time to concentrate on what’s really important running your business.
There are a number of reasons to consider this option with Cardiff being the capital of Wales and ease of public transport access. Basically, the fact that you can say you operate your business from Cardiff can be seen as beneficial. But, the city centre also has its negative aspects especially in today’s tough economic climate when businesses are trying to operate within a tight budget. Some of the negatives to working in the city centre are: ■ Traffic congestion ■ Travelling time to and from work ■ Inflated office prices ■ Public transport delays and breakdowns ■ Expensive car-parking fees
City congestion rises 14% Rush-hour city drivers spend nearly half their journeys in traffic jams, a study says. An average hour-long trip will see them stuck for 25 minutes 39secs – an increase of 14 per cent since 2006.
One monthly transparent invoice with no hidden charges gives clients the security of knowing their monthly capital outlay, minimum license agreements of three months with a one month notice period to leave and office suites ranging from two to twelve people. The Business Centre provides the flexibility to clients looking for that perfect office suite in this difficult climate. Numerous office space/facilities are available in South Wales and also across the whole of the UK due to empty buildings and storage space being converted to office suites as a result of the recession.
Morning and evening rush-hour traffic was monitored in London, Manchester, Norwich, Birmingham and Cardiff. London drivers suffered most, averaging 36 mins 28 secs – up from 19mins 20secs five years ago. Manchester leapt from a 21-minute wait in 2006 to 28 mins 39 secs in the study for Citroen. A spokesman said: “Congestion is not getting better for traffic-weary drivers.”
“The Business Centre take care of you while you take care of your business, providing the flexibility to clients looking for that perfect office suite in this difficult climate. ”
Dugdale Taylor have joined The Business Centre from the city centre over the past twelve months. They have expressed their views on why they chose to move out of the city centre and operate their companies from The Business Centre.
looking for along with competitive serviced office prices. The facilities at the centre are second to none with efficient IT and telecoms infrastructure, free parking, on-site gym, catering and storage facilities and staff willing to go that extra mile.
“The Business Centre provided D T & Co Wealth Management with the perfect solution to operate our business from a professional address within a tight budget. After operating our business from the city centre of Cardiff up until six months ago, as a company we were looking to reduce over-heads but without losing that five star service being provided to our clients. The Business Centre have been excellent in providing D T & Co Wealth Management and our clients with the high quality service we are
We looked long and hard to find suitable premises that provided all these benefits within one location. The centre is easy to access, situated five minutes from Culverhouse Cross with minimal traffic compared to commuting to the city centre. We would not hesitate in recommending The Business Centre to any clients who are looking for competitively priced office accommodation with customer service that is second to none.” Andrew Brinn, Dugdale Taylor

The Business Centre, in Barry, are now proud to offer the new concept of shared office space in the Vale of Glamorgan where clients can operate their businesses from a shared office environment at a reduced monthly rental but with all the benefits of flexible serviced office facilities. The shared office environment includes four workstations with state-of-the-art IT and telecoms infrastructure, fully furnished office space and sectioned workspace for privacy. They can have your business up and running within 24 hours with minimal disruption to your working hours - they take care of you while you take care of your business. James Mason, Centre Manager at The Business Centre highlights the most commonly asked questions for the shared office facility. 5 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR SHARED OFFICE FACILITIES
What is the shortest license agreement you provide for the shared office facility? The Business Centre Shared Office Facility is provided on a monthly rolling agreement with a month’s notice to cancel the facility and leave the premises. It’s entirely up to the client as we can also provide agreements of three, six and twelve months. The flexibility we provide ensures clients at The Business Centre feel comfortable with the length of agreement for their business. What’s included in the monthly rental? The Shared Office Facility monthly rental of £165 plus vat per month will include all furniture (one unit),
telephone line rental, internet connection, 24 hour access with swipe card and office key, free parking, call answering facilities, use of the business address, use of the free in-house gym, all utility bills and business rates, cleaning services, use of break-out areas and the coffee zone. The only pay-as-you-go services that a client would be charged as extra will be for any services that you use such as postage, meeting room hire, telephone call charges etc. Basically, at The Business Centre, the monthly invoice you receive includes everything you need to operate your business from a set base with a professional and prestigious business address. What type of business or personnel is it targeting? The Shared Office Facility is mainly targeting any businesses that are looking to operate from an office suite that provides them with a credible image to their business. If you are a start-up company who is operating on their own; freelancer or works as a satellite office then the shared office facility would be the ideal option. Our current clients include graphic designers, financial consultants and many other professions where the one workstation would be a benefit to their companies. How many other companies will be sharing the office suite? The Shared Office Facility has four workstations within the office suite so at maximum it will be with three other professionals. Each area is sectioned with screen dividers and lockable pedestals, giving clients that extra privacy when operating their businesses. ❧ 71 ❧
What’s the difference between the shared office facility and a dedicated serviced office suite? The shared office facility includes the monthly rental and broadband connection and telephone line rental, making it the ideal option for start-up enterprises and sole traders to operate their business from a credible business centre and address. The shared office facility includes all the benefits and services of the serviced office suites. The dedicated serviced office suite includes a breakdown of the three, where you will be paying the office rental separately to the IT connection and telephone line rental. Once you have acquired the shared office space and if, in the future, you are looking to grow your business, flexibility at The Business Centre ensures that we can provide you with an upgrade to the office suites themselves with no movement charges.

Brendon’s Solicitors
If you happen to have small or large feet that are ‘outside of the norm’ then you’re in luck, as Little Big Shoes has now opened in Barry.
When buying or selling your home or renting a property, it can save a lot of time if you use a local solicitor with a sound knowledge of local laws and leases.
You can now buy stylish footwear that is age appropriate in sizes 1 to 11. If it’s stylish flats, teenage schoolwear, the latest style of boots or elegant shoes for special events, then this shop will be your haven. Think you have to pay over the odds for this service? Not so, all shoes and boots are offered at reasonable prices. So reasonable in fact, you might want to stock up. The shop also offers a range of attractive accessories.
It also helps to get the process moving as quickly as possible, so hiring a firm that is within close proximity to where you live or work means that you can visit them in person and save time by avoiding documents going to and fro in the post, as often happens. Since opening on the High Street, Brendon’s Solicitors have quickly outgrown their offices and have now moved to premises on Broad Street.

Food For Thought Everything you need If you’re a resident or a business owner in Barry then you’re in a very lucky position indeed, as you have a very fine deli right on your doorstep. What makes Food for Thought deli on Barry’s High Street so special is that this family run business of some 24 years does what a deli does best and that’s offering the finest, freshest, tastiest goodies all in one shop. ‘Dave the Deli’ as he’s affectionately known here at Vale Life may have retired but son Nathan is now at the helm and doing a fine job. From the moment the deli opens its doors at 7am (six days a week), there’s a waft of gorgeous cooking smells that hit your senses as soon as you enter the High Street and you just have to step inside. The now famous pasties (both small and large) sit temptingly alongside the daily bread and pastries, while also vying for your attention are the mouth watering Welshcakes, and other delicious cakes and pastries.
A firm favourite with the customers would have to be the individual cheesecakes - so deep and topped with an assortment of fruits and naughty chocolate. After a little spell of shopping in the many boutiques and gift shops, lunchtime is on the horizon and a quick trip back to Food for Thought is in order. The deli counter is heaving with an array of cheeses, meats, coleslaw and olives, that a baguette is called for. You must try the tandoori chicken pieces to die for. There’s always soup of the day at £1 or with a roll £1.20 - very filling and nourishing.
There’s absolutely everything you need here from daily essentials to speciality biscuits, nuts, oils and confectionary the list is endless. New to the deli are a range of delicious ice creams made by Cowpot in West Wales and scrumptious pate’s including pork and chicken liver and salmon and dill. And don’t forget their large selection of Christmas novelties and gift vouchers. That's the thing about your local deli, they welcome customer requests and can, more often than not, get what you need, and it's done with a smile. This isn’t just any deli - it’s Food for Thought. 12 High Street, Barry 01446 735711

Sometimes I don’t want to share. Sometimes, I want to keep a special place to myself. However with the festive season approaching I’ll get into the Christmas spirit.
LLANTRISANT IT’S MAGICAL! The reason I’m reluctant to share one of my favourite places is because, inevitably, if I tell people about it, they’ll go there
There are some great places to eat here too. A restaurant that serves up exotic meats on its menu and a good selection of real ale pubs but my most favourite place to chill is The Butchers Arms Gallery & Coffee Shop. Downstairs The Butchers is a treasure trove of gifts, books, stylish ceramic ware and beautiful Stirling Silver jewellery.
❆
The dairy is full of bling and costume jewellery for all occasions - tiaras for proms and weddings, jewellery for a night out, fabulous gifts and scarves. Upstairs is girl heaven in pink with fairy dresses and accessories - wings, wands and shoes! No self-respecting girl or woman should be without a crystal bracelet or ring and there are plenty here to choose from to suit all budgets - a great pick me up! Christmas will be a very bling occasion this year with the trend for sparkle still around - vintage chic with a big bling brooch!
“Don’t be so mean!” I hear you say. “You should let people know. It’s your job!” Well, I can’t unless it’s through gritted teeth. I could tell you that Llantrisant is relaxingly quiet and quaint. I could tell you about the great selection of boutiques - beautiful shops like The Dairy with its beautiful Swarovski Crystal covered evening bags and jewellery to match. Or the striking Pink Zebra - packed to the rafters with the girliest gifts you can imagine. I could wax lyrical about Model House with its gallery and superb shop full of gorgeous artisan jewellery, ceramics, prints, cards and gifts and if I did that, I’d have to mention the Traditional Toys shop across the cobbled square (yes cobbled!) with its huge range of traditional wooden toys.

I love the quality, and the care that owners Gill and Noel bestow on everything they sell. Upstairs, The Butchers has derailed many a diet (including a few of mine). With sensational sandwiches, great coffee and a mouth-watering array of homemade cakes it holds a special affection in the hearts of the Vale’s professional ladies who lunch. And if Llantrisant plays its trump card, history, then it beats most other towns and villages in Wales hands down (it even has its own castle!). I could tell you that cremation was invented here by the charismatic Dr William Price – you’ll see his statue in the town square. I could tell everyone that Christmas in Llantrisant is traditional, charming and, above all, magical, but I’d rather keep it to myself. Call me mean! Bah, humbug.

THE LAST WORD Daniela Evans owns a very successful laser clinic, Beauty Advance Laser Clinic in Whitchurch, Cardiff but her heart and her home is here, in the Vale of Glamorgan. Where do you live? In a gorgeous house between Bonvilston and St. Hilary with my husband, two children and a big soppy Doberman. My husband, Martyn, is a carpenter full of ideas and was able to accomplish some those ideas in our beautiful home which looks over open fields. On a clear day, we can see the Bristol Channel. What’s your background? Both my parents are Italian and most of my family live in Italy. I was born here in Wales and I’m proud to be Welsh. What do you do for a living? I am a beauty/laser practitioner and own and run a successful clinic in Whitchurch, Cardiff. I love what I do and have a great team. What qualifications do you possess? I have been in this profession since 1981 and started my own business in 1988. My qualifications are with the IHBC, BABTAC, CIBTEC, BMLA approved. Having said that, I believe experience really counts in this industry. I’ve treated thousands of people over the years so there’s not much I haven’t seen. I know we can help most people at the clinic. Who are your clients? My clients/patients are both male and female and ages range from as young as sixteen to ninety. Our ninety year old client is an inspiration to us all, she’s wonderful to be around. Some of my clients are local to the clinic and others travel from far and wide to see us. Why do clients come to you? A lot have been coming to me for years. In our line of business, there needs to be a high level of trust and confidentiality. Living with unwanted excess hair for example can be very embarrassing, so my clients need someone that they can trust to help them with this problem. What gives me great satisfaction is knowing that I make a significant difference to peoples’ lives - giving them confidence to face the world instead of feeling that they have to hide away.
What are your five beauty essentials? They would have to be: ■ Dermaquest Daily Enzyme / Glyco Cleanser ■ Dermaquest Advanced B5 Serum ■ Dermaquest KQ10 ■ SPF50 by Heliocare ■ Youngblood mineral cosmetics. And yes, they are available from our clinic. What do you do in your downtime? I belong to a running club, go to spin and Zumba classes and I also enjoy gardening. It’s good to be active but it’s so important to relax - I try to maintain a healthy balance but it’s not always easy. ❧ 82 ❧
Where do you like to eat? Obviously, given my family heritage, you’d assume I love Italian food and I do but if I were to choose a restaurant in the Vale of Glamorgan, I’d probably go for the Mughal Emperor near Cowbridge on the A48. It’s a five minute drive away and the food is truly excellent. Beauty Advance Laser Clinic The Coach House Whitchurch Common Cardiff CF14 1DW 029 2052 9552 www.beautyadvance.com
