THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN’S PREMIER LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

VALE L IFE Editor Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts jennifer@valelife.co.uk Creative Director Mark Roberts mark@valelife.co.uk Vale Life Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW www.valelifemag.co.uk 0845 130 6452 Passionate about the Vale of Glamorgan We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelifemag.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors.

W ELCOME I consider myself very lucky to be doing what I do. I get to travel all around the Vale, chatting to people from all walks of life and the many small business owners. In this bumper autumn issue we’ve brought you some of the very best from across the Vale. We are very blessed in the Vale Of Glamorgan. We have beautiful countryside, a stunning coastline and vibrant towns and villages that, altogether, combine to create a great quality of life.

Vale Life continues to grow too. We’ve taken on new members of staff to help make the magazine, and its sister titles, City Life Cardiff, Valleys Life and InBusiness even bigger and better.

Sometimes when I watch the news and see what other people are going through in the world, I realise how lucky we are.

We hope you enjoy our latest offering. If there’s anything specifically you would like to see in Vale Life, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We would love to hear about it.

These last few months have been busy and thoroughly enjoyable, seeing familiar and new faces and learning about what the many business owners in the Vale have in store for us over the coming months.

With autumn now well and truly here, it’s all about skin and hair preparation for the months ahead. Who better to turn to for advice than Hairs ‘n’ Graces, Talbot Green. Managing Director Linda Haggett shares with us some ideas on looking and feeling your best.

HAIRS ‘N’ GRACES How do you stay ahead of your competitors? We don’t like to compare ourselves to others; we simply focus on constantly improving our services and our customer care. We have recently refurbished our treatment rooms, making them even more glamorous and comfortable. Our stylists and therapists also regularly go on courses with our suppliers to make sure at are at the top of their game and know exactly what trends we should all be following. I am extremely proud of our team and the positive comments we receive from our clients. We also offer a Loyalty Scheme, this is for all treatments, 5 of the same treatment, the 6th is half price. This is offered as a token of gratitude to all our clients for their loyalty and custom.

What are the most popular treatments for the autumn Linda? FOR THE SKIN It’s definitely all about adding moisture. Our treatments using Dermalogica are very popular at this time of the year. It’s no surprise that celebrities such as Britney Spears, Victoria and David Beckham, Oprah, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kelly Brook use Dermalogica products. In fact, Victoria has been quoted as saying “I love face packs (masques) too and try to do them twice a week using Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque, which I call my little ambulance in a tube”. FOR THE HAIR We need to concentrate on adding moisture where central heating, wind and styling appliances take their toll. We swear by Joico’s Body Luxe range – perfect for conditioning and adding fullness and volume.

What else is proving popular? Our Semi Permanent lashes using MarvelLash are definitely creating a buzz. They look so natural, are comfortable to wear, weightless, water resistant and makes lashes look fuller and long set, a full set is just £40! Also, the new autumn colours have arrived for our popular Gelish Manicures and Pedicures. With colours such as Hello Merlot, Berry Buttoned Up and Whose Cider Are You On?, how can you not love them! They last for up to three weeks with no chipping or fading. Hairs ‘n’ Graces 69 Talbot Road, Talbot Green Pontyclun CF72 8AE 01443 231000

Our Christmas packs include both shampoo and conditioner, they start from only £19.95. 11

enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.

Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Our Creative Director has over 30 years of experience working at some of the world’s best design and advertising agencies. We know what we’re doing. We’re no mugs.

be a lot more work involved when developing an eCommerce website but the companies who we have worked with so far have had fresh ideas about how to market their products and that’s really satisfying. Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.

Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.

What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.

Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to

Are you busy? What kinds of businesses are you working with? Cog started properly at the beginning of this year and we’re getting busier. We’re always looking to take on exciting new projects and really 13

Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

They say style never stands still so you won’t be surprised that Russell Scott-Lawson of Hawkes has brought two more beautiful new brands into the Hawkes fold: Meyer and Circle Of Gentlemen.

BRANDS NEW If you’re looking for the very best menswear brands in South Wales, chances are they’re at Hawkes. Owner Russell Scott-Lawson is passionate about quality so you can bet that brands he stocks are thoroughly vetted for quality before they see the light of Hawkes rails. Recent additions are Meyer and Circle Of Gentlemen which Russell says are ‘completely in-tune with Hawkes ethos and brand values’.

Meyer “High quality materials, stylish designs and functional details all combine to create the perfect fit, and that’s what makes Meyer trousers so special,” says Russell. ‘50 years of quality, down to the smallest detail, that is our signature’ Meyer proudly announces. And who are we to argue. Over the last five decades Meyer has grown and distributed its trouser brand to 4,000 selected retailers in 35 countries. “The things I like about Meyer are not only their commitment to quality and attention to detail, but they take their social, ecological and environmental responsibilities extremely seriously. This is confirmed by their award of the fair trade seal.” Russell adds, “Fair manufacturing conditions and ecological standards in their manufacturing, as well as the best quality down to the smallest detail that´s the promise Meyer make their trade partners and end customers. Exactly the kind of manufacturer Hawkes likes to work with.”

Circle Of Gentlemen For Winter 2014, Circle of Gentlemen introduces a collection that evokes the enduring and classic style of the Film Noir genre. Celebrating the glory days of the 1930s and 40s, the collection mixes contemporary designs, including Herringbone, hounds-tooth, pinstripes and Prince of Wales checks, reinventing them by the use of fabrics and colours. “Noir is now the new black,” says Russell.

The Circle of Gentlemen’s Noir colour way includes new shades of dove grey and burgundy for the Dressed Collection and deep petrol, red brick and midnight blue for the Men collection. An added bonus is that these colours enhance depth throughout the whole collection. Most importantly, Italian blue is the key in the whole colour range. This colour gives the collection the perfect mix between the dandy look and the contemporary way of thinking and dressing. Russell adds, “The strong combination of perfect fit, Italian denim and unique design in detailing makes this jeans collection totally unique.” 18

Chris Macnamara, owner of The Brogue Trader in Cardiff’s beautiful Morgan Arcade has added another great British brand to his range - the 180 year old Tricker’s brand from Northampton. We caught up with Chris to find out why he’s so passionate about Tricker’s shoes.

Joeseph Baltrop

HEART & SOLE It is true to say, whatever the shoe, Tricker’s have never deviated from the high standards of craftsmanship laid down at the outset by the company’s founder. Yet quietly and perhaps rather unassumingly, they have kept in step with modern techniques. Now five generations and 180 years later, it is still apparent that the great spirit of that age and the core principles of quality, innovation, durability, skill, adventure and success are stitched into every pair of shoes that leaves the company’s premises. Chris says, “When you wear a pair of Tricker’s, you’re wearing a piece of history. You’re wearing five generations of expertise.

Chris Macnamara

The year was 1829 when Joseph Barltrop founded Tricker’s. That same year saw Robert Peel establish London’s first uniformed police force, whilst in America, Abraham Lincoln gave his first political speech. Louis Braille invented his system of finger-reading for the blind and Queen Victoria’s ascent to the throne was still eight years away. Tricker’s saw the birth of the modern world, a time for great enlightenment, learning and social reforms. This was the world in which the first retail orders for Tricker’s shoes were secured.

“When they make a shoe they put their hearts and souls into it.”

Throughout the 180 years of the company’s history Tricker’s has remained a family business. The Barltrop family has been at the helm for more than 150 years. Five generations forward and Don Barltrop is now the Chairman and his son Nicholas is Managing Director.

When they make a shoe they put their hearts and souls into it. It’s the quality of the materials and attention to detail which separates and elevates Tricker’s above many other welted manufacturers. I’m very proud to be able to offer the Tricker’s brand to my customers.”

I asked Chris what he likes about the brand. “Tricker’s makes a great variety of footwear. They are particularly renowned for their heavy brogue shoes and boots, and these have been adapted for both country walking and town use. They’re a beautiful brand with a Royal Warrant from His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales. Tricker’s has been a supplier to his Royal Highness for over twenty years and the company supplied his Royal Highness for five years before being given his Royal Warrant. Mr. Nicholas Barltrop, current Managing Director, is the current grantee of the Warrant and Tricker’s still continues to provide footwear to his Royal Highness as well as to the Royal Household.” He adds, “ That alone would, of course, be reason enough for anyone to want to stock the brand but I love their style, the brand exudes quality and that’s what The Brogue Trader’s customers demand.” 22

For some women as they age, they lose their hair; it becomes thin and loses its volume. This has been the case for Fiona Beer, 50, a schoolteacher from Ely. Luckily, Sami Roddy specialises, amongst other things, in hair extensions to solve this problem. Here, Fiona talks to us about her hair dilemma and her new extensions.

SAMI WEAVES HER MAGIC

Tell us about your hair? I’ve never had a thick head of hair but especially now that I’m 50, I’ve noticed that it’s becoming more of an issue. I tend to shed a lot of hair when I blow dry it and I’m quite self-conscious about it. This has meant that I don’t look forward to a visit to the hair salon. In fact, my son wants to be a hairdresser but I won’t even let him blow dry my hair for fear of losing even more strands. How did you hear about Sami? Sami has looked after my hair for quite some time when she worked in a salon in Cowbridge. Sami cuts, colours and now gives me a fuller head of hair, thanks for the new system of hair extensions at Blu.

“ She looks at your hair, understands the problems, listens to what you want and comes up with a solution.”

Tell us about these extensions? Well, I used to go to a very high end salon in London to have extensions but I found them very big, heavy and unsuitable. They dragged my hair down. The ones that Sami uses are tiny and very light and once in, I can hardly feel them but they manage to create volume and thickness. How do you get on with Sami? She’s a lovely girl. Very capable, talented and experienced. She looks at your hair, understands the problems, listens to what you want and comes up with a solution. She’s very in tune with what the client needs. She knows I’m not keen on having my hair done so she’s also extremely quick at what she does. Having hair extensions can sometimes be very time consuming, but Sami is so adept at inserting them, she’s super quick. She’s also very flexible. If my hair only needs filling in in places, then that’s what she’ll do. She doesn’t push me into having a full head of extensions. 31

I couldn’t recommend her highly enough. I still don’t enjoy going to the hair salon but Sami makes it more bearable for me and I have the head of hair that I like.

Research has proven that people living in rural areas are much happier than those in cities because they have greater access to the countryside and they enjoy a greater sense of community. Anyone buying this property can expect a very happy life indeed.

FELIN DAWEL MICHAELSTON-LE-PIT

A wonderfully unique four bedroom property, reconstructed in 1969 from the stone of the original mill located on the site since the 18th century, and set in very private grounds of around one and a half acres. Felin Dawel is a unique, modern and versatile family home with excellent living space on both floors, comprising two spacious reception rooms, a kitchen with excellent dining space, four double bedrooms and two bathrooms. This property offers the best of both worlds being nestled in the idyllic setting of Michaelston-le-Pit with Dinas Powys on the doorstep and the centre of Cardiff just four miles away.

There are definite health benefits from living by the sea. The sound of waves alters wave patterns in the brain lulling you into a deeply relaxed state, rejuvenating the mind and body. We’re not promising that by buying this house, you’ll live longer but every little helps!

MARINE PARADE A special and very spacious second floor apartment in this converted Victorian property, with extremely good views of the Bristol Channel from the large lounge and master bedroom.

PENARTH

This property is ideal for couples looking to downsize, and well suited to those looking at alternatives to a small house, comes equipped with three bedrooms, spacious bathroom and a kitchen with dining space that provides excellent space but with the potential for further improvement as a fantastic kitchen/diner. Well proportioned rooms and high ceilings mean this apartment can take big items of furniture, and the three bedrooms give you plenty of additional versatility for an office, extra storage or more of a snug TV lounge. The impressive views must be seen to be believed, and stretch as far as the eye can see up and down the Channel over the tree lined Marine Parade. Outside there is a small storage shed and an off road parking space. The property provides ideal accommodation with a touch of luxury, the views and a very convenient location for the town centre on one of Wales’ most famous and sought after streets. With so many carpet businesses and showrooms available, how do you know which one to choose? A good sign is business longevity, growth and word of mouth. Quality Carpets Direct can tick all of these boxes. We chat to both brothers Jamie and Richard to find out what makes Quality Carpets stand out from the crowd.

WALK THIS WAY

We hear that you’re a company that likes to give back, how do you achieve this? We are very heavily involved in local charities both in our Cardiff and Penarth stores. We have been indirectly involved with the Waterloo Gardens fete in support of Holme Towers and the High Street Rejuvenation project. We are keen to support local organisations, charities and events. How important is the Shop Local policy to you? Very. We believe in supporting local suppliers wherever possible. So much so, that achieved our Canmol Marketing Award 2013 for our Partner Store Scheme set up to counter the dominance of the large out of town stores and direct new customers to recommended independent carpet retailers.

How long has Quality Carpets Direct been established? We started the business seven years ago via the internet. We set it up from south Wales, supplying and fitting carpets from London to Aberdeen. When did you open your first store? We opened in Cardiff a year ago and have been delighted with its success. So much so, that we’ve recently opened our second store in Penarth. Why did you choose Penarth? We feel that Penarth is the perfect location for us. Notwithstanding it having over 20,000 people living here, it also has a good number of quality, independent businesses and eateries such as James Sommerin, The Pheasantry, Bar 44 and, if we are to believe what we hear, the national chain, Prezzo. It has everything, an iconic Pier, parks, shops, eateries, great schools; it was the obvious destination choice for us.

“ Top class service, fitting and aftercare and very affordable pricing.”

What brings customers to Quality Carpets Direct? We base our business practice on top class service, fitting and aftercare and very affordable pricing. Since the unfortunately demise of Maskreys, we are finding that customers come to us because they are looking for a company that offers a high level of service but with low internet prices.

How has business been so far? Better than we could have anticipated. We are currently offering a free upgrade to our deluxe underlay range, which is normally £7m2 to all of our Penarth branch customers.

What do you feel you offer which sets you apart? We are a family run, local business with experienced in-house, customer oriented fitters. We offer free underlay on many ranges. Ours is a new forward thinking way of buying carpets. As we possess big buying power, we can offer a vast array of carpets at low prices, even those found on the internet. We also offer free underlay on many carpet styles. How many staff do you employ? We employ ten staff across our two stores. We invest heavily in staff training and customer care and this is reflected in the feedback we receive. 34

ADAPTIVE VEHICLE SOLUTIONS Adaptive Vehicle Solutions are a family run vehicle sourcing company based in Llanishen, Cardiff. We primarily supply company directors, CEO’s of companies and time starved individuals. Our main forte, the prestigious market, with such marques as Range Rover, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Mercedes, Audi to name a few. Further to the previous, we can also supply fleet and commercial vehicles including Ford, Citroen, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen. Full dealership facilities are available with competitive finance packages for all clients. Part exchange underwriting is available alongside local and nationwide delivery options too. Richard Blakeney, the Company Director, captured a niche audience and client base, who didn’t have the time or inclination to find a vehicle for themselves. Wasting countless hours in showrooms, needlessly trawling the Internet and making zero headway. Since February 2005, Richard and AVS have experienced the high and low points of the economy with significant growth and overcoming the economic downturn in 2008.

Priding ourselves on being able to adapt to your vehicle requirements, no matter the desire. We offer a friendly, more efficient and personal service than your local dealership, without the hassle of spending a whole day in a showroom. Although obtaining stock items for immediate delivery, sometimes it just isn’t enough, the wrong colour, too old, too new. If you simply just do not have the time to be visiting every dealer under the sun or waiting 16 weeks for a factory order, we can help. Benefiting from extensive contacts within the motor-trade 35

and the combined knowledge of over 40 years, we can “find the right gear for you”. “Sebastian & St James have operated from the serviced office facilities at The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd for over 6 years with the location being perfectly situated 15 minutes from the M4 and 10 minutes from Cardiff Airport. Due to the nature of our business this is vital to what we do.

“After starting my business and working from home for nearly 5 years, it was a big decision to move to an office. Knowing more what I didn’t want (unknown overheads and a commitment to a long term lease), than what I did want, I was pleasantly surprised when I found The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd.

The professional service and environment has helped the business grow over the years with call answering, IT and telephony support all provided as part of the support package. If you also include the use of catered conference facilities, an on-site café area and plenty of free parking, we believe everything has been provided under one roof that Sebastian & St James need in order to concentrate on what’s really important to us, our business. The Business Centre (Cardiff) Ltd have given us the opportunity to solely concentrate on growing our business by taking away all the headaches that can arise when leasing business premises.”

It has ticked all the boxes for me. A quantified, affordable overhead, flexible terms and a professional environment. In addition, it has an extremely friendly atmosphere and is very clean and well managed. With plenty of parking, an on-site café area, meeting rooms etc, it really does have everything I need to conduct my business. All my clients have been impressed and I feel my business is growing faster since having my office.” Helen Adams, Owner, HRA Accounting Ltd

With six practices to its name, supported by some thirty four employees who work extremely hard to provide the sort of care and attention they would expect to be given themselves, it no wonder that Davies and Jones Optometrists have survived in the industry for so long. We spoke to Simon Jones of the Dinas Powys branch to find out what makes this company stand out from the crowd.

VISIONARIES

How long has the business been established? Davies and Jones Optometrists are an Independent company and have been providing quality evidence based eye care to the Rhondda and surrounding areas for around fifty years. We are currently located in, Ferndale, Porth, Talbot Green, Treorchy, Treherbert and Dinas Powys which has been established for over twenty five years. Our patients are mainly from the Vale of Glamorgan area, however if patients and families move out of the area, a lot return purely for the excellent patients centered care that we provide. Who runs the practice? The practice is managed by me, Simon Jones, and I work in tandem with Danielle as optometrists, and we both are graduates from Cardiff University, both Members of the Royal College of Optometrists, WECS and Low Vision accredited. We are ably assisted by our knowledgeable, long serving receptionists Margaret and Avril.

What services do you offer? We strive to provide the best possible patient care. We have invested heavily in our practices with the most up-to-date clinical equipment including Test Chart 2000, Ocular Coherence Tomographs, Optomap Retinal Scanning, Fundus Photography, Humphrey and Henson Visual Field Analysers. What brands of glasses do you offer? Our qualified clinical staff will help you select a frame from our hand-selected collection of UK and internationally designed frames, styled for different looks and priced for every budget. These include rimless, half-rim and full-rim styles made using a range of materials from the latest plastics to tough and light titanium. Our expert knowledge of fashion trends and your prescription will make sure that you find a frame that is stylish, practical and matches your budget. Because we’re independent, we are constantly updating our product ranges and are 44

not tied to specific manufactures. We can provide something individual and bespoke that’s not available elsewhere locally. What do you think makes Davies and Jones stand out from other practitioners? As an independent practice, we deal with all the market leaders as well as smaller specialist firms who produce custom-made and hand-painted lenses. With this range of choice, we are able to find contact lenses to suit almost any lifestyle. We are able to see patients who have challenging and complex prescriptions or medical eye conditions. For example Keratoconus and others with irregular corneas, which require unique custom made contact lenses, allowing them to enjoy clear comfortable vision. We are Eye Health Examination Wales accredited, where anyone can self-refer or be referred by their General Practice whenever they have a sudden eye

problem for example a red eye, sudden floaters, painful eye or a shadow in their vision. If even with the help of glasses your vision is still at a level where it interferes with your quality of life, you may benefit from a low vision assessment funded by the Welsh Assembly Government to provided aids. Do you work closely with the medical profession? Yes. Ophthalmology services can be accessed both on an NHS basis through timely referral by your Optometrist to local hospitals or through private consultation. Some people prefer to access private healthcare and, as such, we are proud to be able to offer private consultations in our Talbot Green and Porth practices. This presents a significant opportunity for patients who would like peace of mind through a rapid access to a consultant.

What about employers who offer healthcare benefits? If your employer has issued you with eye care vouchers, we can help you to choose spectacles that not only improve your vision but also make you look good, perhaps with one of our designer frames. Do you offer any other services? Yes we provide hearing test every two weeks. This is a great help to our customers as we can provide a one-stop-shop for these two health areas. What customers say... “After attending a large high street chain opticians for a few years, and feeling thoroughly fed up being treated like cattle, the time and professionalism of Davies and Jones was a real breath of fresh air. You are treated as an individual, not rushed and the aftercare is also excellent. Paul Stokes Talbot Green 45

The town has seen its population swell over the recent decade. It’s also sometimes referred to as Little Cowbridge and while it doesn’t have market town status of Cowbridge, in many other respects it matches its affluent neighbour very well. It has a vibrant high street, with many independent businesses and, thankfully, house prices are yet to reach the dizzy heights of Cowbridge, meaning those moving here enjoy more bang for their buck. It’s northerly border is close to Talbot Green and, to the south, it enjoys the rolling Vale countryside that lies to the north of Cowbridge.

STYLE PHOTOGRAPHY SIAN OWEN

The Queen B has been open five years now. How are things going? Really well - We opened at the start of the recession and everyone thought I was mad (including myself) We seemed to have proved them wrong as we have gone from strength to strength year on year! Why do you think The Queen B is so successful? Stocking the right products at the right price. We have weekly deliveries of new stock so week on week you’ll always find something different. We vary our brands from season to season so there is always a fresh look. Our service is attentive but not overbearing. If you want to be served, we’ll serve you, if you want to be left alone, we’ll leave you alone. We are not pushy and like clients to come in just for a chat, underpinning this with a lot of passion and hard work! How do you balance your working life as a boutique owner with being a wife and mum? Well you can only do your best. I make what I think are the right decisions at the time and just try to do my best. I am constantly feeling guilty about being a good mum, but the bottom line is that Ben and Lily come first. How do you relax? With wine! Do you watch what you eat? Not really, but if I start to feel ‘too uncomfortable’ in my clothes I start the ‘no wine in the week and no bread diet’. It works for me. What do you love about your age? I don’t love my age but I guess age brings confidence. It’s a funny thing, your body has more imperfections as you get older, but I see a lot of women who are more comfortable in their own skin as they get older. Everyone has an opinion but I’ve learned not to care too much about what people think. 60

QUEEN Would you have any cosmetic work? I haven’t yet but that’s not because I am against it in moderation - I don’t think the plastic face look is attractive - never say never though. Do you think any woman at any age can look good? Yes, but like anything in life you have to work at it to succeed and, as you get older, you just have to work a little harder. Good hair and make-up are critical. I don’t believe that women should wear a typical style just because they are a certain age. I believe it’s about individual style, shape and personality. Do you enjoy running one of the Vale’s most popular boutiques? Without a shadow of doubt it’s the best job I’ve ever had. What are your most important business values? Customer service - it’s paramount. Everyone who walks through the door will be treated the same, whether they are buying a £10 scarf or spending £500 on a mother of the bride outfit. We will always tell you the truth. If something doesn’t look good, we will tell you. We would prefer our clients walk away with nothing and comeback; than go with something that wasn’t right and never return. Who do you turn to in times of need? My husband and mother are my best sounding boards - they both know me so well and are not afraid to tell me the truth. They’ll never tell me what they think I want to hear. What’s next for you? Now would that be telling. There’s some exciting developments. You’ll just have to watch this space.

“At The Queen B style has never been so affordable.”

It’s been around for fifty years, but, rest assured The Place for Homes hasn’t stood still. This vast and unique showroom is in Llandow, nestled in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, just minutes from the fashionable market town, Cowbridge.

THE PLACE FOR YOU

The Place for Homes has a remarkable history not only in the fact that it is located in a WWII aircraft hangar (although this is easily forgotten when you step inside the fabulous refurbished 50,000sq ft showroom), but also in the celebrity involvement over the years. From Honor Blackman, Lionel Blair, Leslie Phillips CBE and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Place For Homes has always had a loyal following, with Leslie Phillips CBE remaining the stores President. The first thing that strikes you when you enter “The Place for Homes” is the stark contrast between outside and in and the truly astonishing choice of sofas, dining, bedroom, beds, flooring and accessories that are on offer. Everything on display has been carefully considered with styles, sizes and prices to match every individual customer need.

The sales team is headed up by Rhys Nelson, (who has recently taken on the role of Sales Director) whose extensive product knowledge and passion for all things furniture immediately shines through. “It’s all about helping you, our customer to find what you’re looking for and we’ll always go the extra mile to help you achieve that. We listen to you and make changes based on what you want”. It’s this attitude that has led to The Place For Homes to invest in products that enable a next day delivery service so that for those of us leading such busy lives there’s no need to wait. As you wander through the store, there always seems to be something new or unusual to catch your eye. With an impressive Natuzzi Editions gallery dominating as you enter the showroom – be prepared to be inspired.

“ Quality products at the best prices, with the best possible service ” 62

Chatting to Rhian Francis, MD, it’s clear that the whole ethos of The Place for Homes is the customer. “We work on very simple principles that some may consider old fashioned; we provide quality products at the best prices and with the best possible service. As a family business we aim to provide the same service and attention to detail to all aspects of our business as we would want to receive ourselves. These values have always been instilled in us by our now Chairman Mr Graham Nelson and remain at the heart of the business.” The things that immediately stand out are the passion and enthusiasm for what the company offers, with the constant focus being on you, the customer. Both Rhian and Rhys were keen to attribute this to their fantastic team of staff who ensure this ethos is continued through every aspect of your dealings with The Place for Homes. “Sue Gunston heads up our customer service team,

whilst Richard Izzard leads our excellent delivery teams and spends hours ensuring the showroom looks at its very best for you. John Franklin is our carpet, flooring and curtain expert and will visit your home to measure and advise you on all your flooring needs. Janet Jones and Ann Mayson make up our administrative department with Janet being the longest serving staff member joining over 45 years ago! Ceri Powell is our furniture sales advisor with extensive experience in furniture and beds with particular expertise in advising customers in our mobility gallery. Tom Parker our newest member of the team is now dedicated to developing and improving our website so you can shop from the comfort of your home safe in the knowledge that you’re going to achieve that same great service.”

The enormous showroom is the home to galleries from a superb selection of leading brands, such as Natuzzi Editions, Wade, Alstons, Sherborne and La-Z-Boy in the upholstery department. In the bedroom department you can view the largest selection of Rauch sliding and assembled bedrooms in South Wales, touch and feel the luxury of Willis and Gambier or select from the affordable solid oak and high gloss bedroom displays. You can see the attention to detail as you amble through the bed department, with the huge range of beds giving you a choice whatever type or budget you are looking for. Relax on a Tempur mattress or take the Hippo and duck challenge in the Silentnight Gallery .The theme is continued in the dining department; select from modern, contemporary or traditional dining ranges and treat yourself to a new dining set in time for Christmas; brands include Nathan, Old Charm and Willis and Gambier to name a few with many solid oak dining ranges available from stock. 63

One thing that’s clear is that this is a business that is growing and moving forward with the focus being on you, the customer. It really is a challenge to describe all that’s on offer at The Place for Homes. Make a visit and enjoy a complimentary cappuccino in the new coffee bar or visit www.theplaceforhomesltd.co.uk

A city set on a hill cannot be hid. This saying sums up Llantrisant’s commanding position overlooking its neighbour, Talbot Green. Llantrisant is packed with history. It has an enchanting, mystical quality which is why so many visitors visit again and again.

LLANTRISANT LLANTRISANT

Christmas Tree Festival The Llantrisant Parish Church will open on Friday, 5th December with a concert by The (Richard Williams) Gentlemen Songsters.

The church will then be open on Saturday, 6th December 9.30 am to 6 pm and on Sunday, 7th December 12 pm to 5pm with an Advent Songs of Praise at 7.30 pm. Parish warden, Rob Jenkins tells us “One of the most successful parts of the festival is to see so many people visiting the church and the sense of true community spirit created by the event. The atmosphere created in the church is quite magical, with local choirs singing and some very innovative displays. Many of the visitors to the festival comment how it is so refreshing

PINK ZEBRA

Hard to Miss Pink Zebra is a wonderful shop found in the lovely hill top vista of Llantrisant. The bright pink shop is hard to miss and now you know that it is filled to the brim with fabulous gifts and wonderful accessories, it really is worth adding a visit to your diary.

to experience the true meaning of Christmas.” A group or individual set up a decorated, lit tree in church. This usually depicts something meaningful to them or conveys the true meaning of Christmas. There are over fifty trees on display. There is a wonderful Santa’s grotto based on a Victorian toy shop where children come to see Father Christmas and are given a gift. There are also stalls set up in the newly refurbished Parish Hall, selling craftwork, cards, homemade cakes and refreshments.

Everyone is welcomed, with people coming from far and wide to experience this delightful event.

The money raised goes to a local charity or good cause. Since the beginning of the festival in 2001, over £45,000 has been donated to various causes such as Velindre Hospital; MacMillan Nurses and Parkinson’s Disease research. This year, the nominated cause is charities supporting dementia.

Concert £6.00. Entry to the festival £2.50 (adults). Children free. Grotto £2.50. Songs of Praise – free entry.

The stock including handbags, scarves jewellery and clothing changes regularly, which is great for our weekly customers as well as exciting for new visitors. We also only buy in small quantities so you are less likely to bump into anyone else wearing the same as you. We are a major stockist of Yankee Candles with a huge range of fragrances plus accessories, limited editions,

To be successful in anything in life you have to be passionate about it. After Welsh International rugby player Paul Young’s career was cut short by injury, he strove for excellence with a new passion - interior design and so, in 2011, So Exclusive Interiors was born.

FIELD OF DREAMS 28

Paul Young and Rebecca Fox

What is your background? As a qualified builder, I’ve always had a keen interest in property. Throughout my time as a professional rugby player, I knew it was important to develop and sustain a business outside rugby. I was fortunate enough to build up a portfolio of properties whilst playing and this, in turn, allowed me to hone my project management, renovation and interior design skills for future projects. With a keen interest in property development, and an eye for interiors, it was a natural progression for me at a time when homeowners were choosing to refurbish their properties rather than moving house. Are you still involved with rugby? Absolutely, I love rugby. I’m still involved with coaching, as Head/ Forwards Coach to Bridgend Ravens, who play in the Principality Premiership. I started out playing for Llanelli RFC, moved to Cardiff and then on to Newport. Newport RFC then became Newport Gwent Dragons and I received my Welsh cap whilst playing for them in August 2003. Unfortunately retirement came due to injury in 2005 and I moved to Galway, Ireland to coach Galwegians RFC. I returned to the UK in 2009 to be Director of Rugby at Coleg Gwent, Crosskeys and Wales U16s Assistant Coach. How did you come to go into this new line of business? While playing and coaching I realised that there were many attributes I could take from both roles and put them to good use starting up my business.

My work ethic, communication, drive, organisation and self-discipline have helped me succeed in setting up a unique interiors company that I am very passionate about. What services do you offer? Made-to-measure curtains, blinds and accessories using designer fabrics and textiles and designer wallcoverings. We design and create bespoke upholstery and furniture and offer a complete interior design service from consultancy right through to project management. We provide these services for residential and commercial clients. What areas do you cover? South Wales mainly, covering Monmouth and Chepstow through Newport, Cardiff, The Vale of Glamorgan, Barry, Porthcawl and Bridgend. Why would someone use you? We love what we do and want to leave our clients loving their surroundings. Over the years we have built up strong relationships with some fantastically unique suppliers. With a vast selection of products and the exciting news that Rebecca Fox has joined our team, we are more than confident of providing bespoke and exclusive interiors for any space. Rebecca joins us with a wealth of interior design experience and has worked for a number of high-profile interior design companies in Wales and London. We are delighted to offer her expertise to our clients as she never disappoints. It’s exclusive relationships that set us apart. We can advise and source unique products for interiors; from restaurants to hotels, coffee shops to offices or from one room to a whole house! 69

What type of projects do you enjoy working on? I love being handed carte blanche on a project and enjoy working with themes and interiors that are unique and slightly unusual albeit for the home or a corporate space. How would you like people to see the So Exclusive brand? I’d like to think we’d be incomparable for interiors. I know we’re innovative, I believe we can inspire clients, but we’re friendly and approachable too and I think that is so important. I know we’re in a tough market but we have the talent and creativity to deliver beautiful solutions for our clients. Ultimately, I’d like clients to have the same respect for us as a brand as I enjoyed when I played professional rugby - to be the very best.

If you haven’t visited Topstak in Cowbridge for a while, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. This is a family business that has bucked the trend in recent years and grown considerably. Vale Life chatted with founders Christian and Lynda Pedersen.

HOT STUFF

When we last visited Topstak, we were impressed by the range of stoves and chimneys on offer but what impressed us most was their passion for the business and their almost obsessive approach to delivering exceptional customer service.

One of the big changes has been the addition of The Topstak Café on the first floor. Beautifully spacious, tastefully designed and flanked by a colourful gallery of local artworks and really, really cool products. We particularly loved the Joseph Joseph range of kitchenware. The coffee is great too.

Since our last visit, the first thing we notice is that the showroom has increased in size dramatically. The stove selection has expanded greatly too: from the mild - beautiful, traditional stoves in a huge range of sizes, to the wild - gorgeously sleek and stylish creations, some of which almost seem to defy gravity. When Topstak claim to have a stove to suit every taste and budget, you couldn’t possibly argue, and they’re all clearly priced and beautifully presented.

I asked Christian what he thinks is the key to Topstak’s success. “This year will be my 40th anniversary in the stove and chimney business, so I’ve been able to bring that experience and wealth of knowledge to the business. We’ve always believed that to be successful you have to invest not only in the business but also our staff and our customers. We build relationships with people and they keep coming back.” He adds, “We’ve never believed in hard sell tactics. 70

“We always aim to to give customers the best possible service and real value for money. Judging by the customer testimonials on our website we are known for giving great service and value”. Topstak’s continued investment in the family business means lower overheads, which Christian and Lynda believe means customers’ pay less - not only for the considerable stove and chimney range, but also for the many other products and services Topstak including: Chesney Fireplaces, Big Green Egg, Rayburn and Esse cookers, a beautiful range of Neptune kitchens and its expertise in renewable energy, a growing part of Topstak’s business.

“Customer testimonials show that we are known for giving great service and value.”

Lynda adds, “We have a great range of products on display in various settings to give ideas on what can provide” With the addition of the cafe we have become something of a destination.

The new cafe means customers can have a good look around, enjoy a coffee and a cake and get a feel for what Topstak can offer them. They great thing about Topstak is it’s always cosy here, even in autumn and winter.” Having experienced Topstak for ourselves, we can certainly vouch for that. Talbot Green-based housebuilder, Llanmoor Homes has recently opened the doors of its latest show home in Coity, Bridgend. We chatted to Tracey Grey, Show Home Designer for Llanmoor about the opening, and her role at the family-run business.

LLANMOOR HOMES The company was founded by Brian Grey in 1966 and is now run by his three sons Simon, Tim (my husband) and Matthew Grey. This means Llanmoor is a very friendly company to work both with and for, with all employees sharing our core values and family ethos. What’s special about buying a Llanmoor home? We pride ourselves on a number of things, but mostly it is quality of construction; building homes of the highest quality in soughtafter locations. We have won both Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend Council’s Local Authority Building Control Awards for our continued high standards of construction, and this year, our site manager in Tondu won the LABC Wales ‘Site Agent of the Year’ Award. We’re also proud to offer our customers a very high level of customer service and personable approach, guiding them through every stage of the home buying process. Tell us about your latest project at Llanmoor Homes. I’ve recently finished the interior design and furnishing of the 4 bedroom show home at Gerddi Pentref, our latest development of homes in Coity, Bridgend. Show homes are the shop windows for house builders to showcase the quality and charm of our properties to potential buyers. It is very important that a show home is inviting and inspiring, to help customers to imagine themselves living in their own Llanmoor home. We’ve noticed butterflies are a theme of this home. Butterflies are a really hot trend for 2014 and as our logo is a butterfly it seemed like the perfect theme to design the home around. It’s a vibrant and fun theme and gave me the opportunity to use some fantastic highimpact colours in the home.

Where do you get your inspiration? I spend a lot of time looking around home and furniture stores and also take inspiration from magazines, websites and design blogs. One of my favourite places to buy furniture for show homes is Benjamin’s Interiors in Cardiff as I love the modern and unusual designs. As a company, we are very keen to support other Welsh businesses so I always try and source from local, independent stores.

Where does Llanmoor Homes build? We’re currently building on six different developments in South Wales. As well as Gerddi Pentref Bridgend, we also have developments in nearby Tondu, Llanharan, Llanharry and Tonyrefail. We’ve also just launched our first development in the Newport area at Bethesda Field, Rogerstone, which is an exciting venture for us.

How long have you worked for Llanmoor? I have worked on show homes and interior design for Llanmoor for nineteen great years. It’s my dream job! You’re not the only member of your family involved. Tell us more... That’s right. Llanmoor Homes is still very much a family business, making it quite unique in the industry, and one of the only remaining privately owned house builders in Wales. 72

Close your eyes, and imagine Edna Mode, the avant-garde fashion designer and super suits seamstress in Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles saying, “Patio doors are so last season darling!” And she’d be right, because the only doors any self-respecting conservatory or orangery designer is going to be using these days are bi-folds. “What’s so great about bi-folds?” I hear you ask, and, if you have to ask, please leave the room now, you clearly have no taste. Quite simply a set of bi-fold doors can change your life. How do I know this? Because I have been converted. The first thing I love about bi-folds is the increase in light. Closed or open they increase light into a room significantly. In summer, the effect created by opening the doors completely is truly stunning. If you’re lucky enough to have a decent garden, it will be like having a twenty foot plasma television and watching the world’s best nature programme. The relationship created between the outside and inside is life changing (and I’m really not exaggerating). In winter, the significant increase in light is most welcome. I do suffer a little with SAD Syndrome in winter months, and the increase in ambient light has had a noticeably positive effect on my mood. The next thing to consider is material. If you’re even thinking about mentioning uPVC, don’t. The material of choice here is aluminium which has two excellent properties: it’s light and it’s strong (remember you’re going to have to slide those lovely doors open and you don’t want to be breaking in to an unattractive sweat while showing off.) The other great thing about aluminium is that it can be coloured. If you’re Katie Price, you might choose pink but, by far, the most popular colours are white, charcoal and black.

The next question is who do you entrust with the project? There are plenty of companies out there in South Wales but you’ll want to speak to someone who actually manufactures bi-fold doors. Alexander James, a family owned Welsh company, have been designing, manufacturing and installing bi-fold doors for over ten years. The company has many satisfied customers across south Wales and along the M4 corridor (they also do a lot of work in London). Andy Farmer lives in Barry and is Sales Director at Alexander James. He prides himself on being an expert on bi-folds. “We manufacture all our bi-fold frames and doors in-house. We only use higrade aluminium and all our frames and doors come with a guarantee,” he says, “The technology has moved forward in recent years. Doors are stronger, lighter and the colour palette available is almost unlimited. You can have tinted glass and even blinds set within the double glazing. It’s a revolutionary product.” Cost is always a factor in any home improvement but Andy is confident that Alexander James are extremely competitive. “Yes price is important,” Andy says, “but you have to ensure that corners aren’t cut when it comes to security and safety. We’re confident our bi-fold doors are competitively priced but we won’t compromise on quality of materials or any part of the manufacturing process. We value our reputation more.” So if your patio doors are a little tired and you’d like to let a little more light into your life, perhaps reading this will be an eye-opener. I can, with all honesty, say that installing bi-fold doors has changed my life. And, as Edna from The Incredibles might say, “It will be bold. Dramatic! Heroic!”

“ In summer, the effect created by opening the doors completely is truly stunning.” 78

LIGHT FANTASTIC

October and Autumn closes in on the garden, but it does so in a blaze of glory especially after the summer that we have had and the driest and warmest September since records began. Leaves are colouring up, bright berries are illuminating dark corners and the garden is waiting for the first frosts so it can start to slow down.

BLAZE OF GLORY

Reds and golds typify autumn and, until the weather turns, the bees and insects are working hard to make the most of this super abundant late summer. It’s this time of year that we harvest the fruits of our hard work, whether its veg on your allotment or grapes growing on a sunny wall in your own garden. Within a few weeks the garden will provide us with more work than we can normally cope with. Lawns need to have the leaves cleared, the mower height raised, scarified to remove thatch and moss and an autumn fertilizer applied to set up the lawn ready for the following spring. Another job to do at this time of year is to make an effort to visit other well known gardens or well stocked parks, these can give you inspiration and ideas so you can apply them to your garden for next year’s autumn. For a few weeks colour can dominate your garden if planned correctly.

Plants that really stand out at this time of year and get everybody talking about them are the acers with their outstanding colours, pyracantha’s with their red and yellow berries and the biggest show offs of them all are the virginia creepers, even their Latin names seem to impress Parthenosisis quinquefolia and Parthenosisis tricuspidata being the Virginia Creeper and the Boston Ivy. In less than a month’s time it will be all change again, frosts will be coming and going, the days will be shorter and the rain will be more frequent and more persistent but none of this will deter a keen gardener from making the most of their most precious possession, their garden.

“It’s this time of year that we harvest the fruits of our hard work.” 80

I often wonder why is it that someone opens a shop? Is it a passion for sales? Is it a love of the brand or brands that they are selling? Or is it that they love the buzz of being in business. For Alan Rose and his wife Ellena, it’s all three. The couple are really enjoying their outdoor and travel clothing business in Cowbridge. We chat to Alan to find out more.

ROHAN

Why did you choose Cowbridge? We live locally in Talygarn, just down the road. We wanted to introduce Cowbridge and surrounding residents to a brand that we know they will love as much as we do. We’re lucky to have ample car parking too. Who shops at Rohan? The word has spread that the brand is in Cowbridge and we are seeing Rohan customers both old and new every day. The brand suits both men and women who want their clothes to last and are happy to pay for quality. Rohan isn’t just for walkers and those who enjoy outdoor pursuits, many customers buy them to wear for everyday use because of their comfort and style.

Men’s & Women’s Microgrid Stowaway Zip

Why did you choose to buy into the franchise Rohan? I’ve worn the brand myself for as long as I can remember. My wife Ellena and I came across it when we were visiting Covent Garden and I’ve worn it ever since. I remember buying and wearing a linen suit on a trip to Australia. After 24 hours, it still looked just as good. What do you like about the brand? I like a brand with a bit of history and Rohan has that. It was founded back in 1972 by Paul and Sarah Howcroft who were frustrated by the bulk, weight and discomfort of traditional outdoor clothing.

Then and now, the clothing protected you in comfort from the world’s wildest places. The clothing is light but durable, highly packable and fast drying, which means you pack less, travel lighter and get more done. It’s made to last. The subtle styles and bomb-proof build mean that it has an enviable reputation for longevity. We’ve had customers who have come in having bought items 27 years ago and they are still going strong!

“ We are seeing Rohan customers both old and new every day.” 84

What are your top product recommendations this autumn? Our Countrywide Jacket combines good looks with outstanding performance and we expect it to do well. It’s totally waterproof, highly breathable and has the appearance of waxed cotton without any of the faff, heaviness or smell. And amazingly you can machine wash it! The Microgrid Stowaway jacket is a best seller too, it’s the most versatile, packable fleece with a great warmth-to-weight ratio.

Pick your own Christmas tree When Charlotte and Andrew Lord acquired a 16 acre field behind their home, they had no idea that they would end up with a Christmas Tree Farm. The first 200 Christmas Trees were planted as a solution to their own problem. They used to spend hours each Christmas driving around the Vale and beyond, searching for a Christmas Tree that had not been cut weeks earlier and transported for miles. Andrew suggested planting a few Christmas Trees in a corner of the field, so they planted enough for themselves, their friends and family. With the rest of the field needing to earn its keep, they

decided to plant more and after a few years they had thousands of trees and a new business which opened its gates for the first time in 2011. Ty Cerrig Christmas Tree Farm is open from the beginning of December daily from 10am to 4pm. Customers are invited to go to the Farm, put on their wellies and get out in the fresh air to choose their tree. All trees are left growing until someone chooses it. Some customers come early in December, put a label on their tree and come back later in the month to collect it. It stays growing until they come back. Or you can have it cut straight away by one of the friendly team. Choose from Nordmann Fir (the non-drop one), Norway Spruce (the traditional one), Blue Spruce, Fraser 97

WEDDING SUPPLEMENT

Our Proposal We have been asked so many times to include a Wedding Supplement within Vale Life that we couldn’t ignore the requests any longer.

If you’re a photographer, venue, florist, make-up artist, wedding cake supplier, bridal boutique (and any other wedding supplier I may have missed out) and you would like to be included in a future Wedding Supplement, then please get in touch.

We will be keeping it local, so you won’t be among lots of other businesses offering the same service. Less is more in our opinion. Please contact Jennifer on 07766 106701 or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk if you would like to be included.

Makeup should last all day and all night, from crying to kissing, and eating through to dancing. You’ll need your lashes completely waterproof, lips to be kiss resistant, and your flawless face makeup to be photo-perfect. The 24th of May 2014 is an important date for Penarth Pier Pavilion as it was the day that Kristy Mellin married her fiancé of two years, Lee Williams and the Pavilion’s first ever wedding. We chatted to Kristy to find out how the happy day went.

MR & MRS

Where did your husband propose to you? In our kitchen. The last of the great romantics! What made you decide on the Penarth Pier Pavilion as your wedding venue? We moved to Penarth in 2011, and we absolutely love living there, so we definitely wanted to get married in Penarth. We think the Pavilion is the most beautiful and iconic building in Penarth. It was the obvious choice for us. Who was the wedding coordinator there? Nardine Simons. She was a joy to work with.

Did the day go without a hitch? Not quite. My Jimmy Choo heel got stuck between the planks of wood on the pier when we were having our photos taken, and broke! Describe how you felt on the day? It was raining, which you would think might have spoilt it, but we all had a laugh about the good old Welsh weather. It also made for some really good atmospheric photos on the pier. The venue was beautifully decorated, and the food was wonderful. The band (I-Rock) were fantastic. They had everyone up dancing all night. Everyone had a really good day, and lots of fun. In place of wedding favours, we made a donation to Macmillan Cancer Care and Friends of the Dogs Wales. Some of the volunteers from Friends of the Dogs Wales came to see us on our wedding day, and brought two of the dogs from Cardiff Dogs Home with them, which was lovely. Thankfully both dogs have since been rehomed. 104

How was the best man speech? Our best man was very nervous, so we let him off making a speech. We didn’t really want lots of long speeches anyway. Where did you get your rings? We went to The Diamond Centre of Wales for both our engagement and wedding rings. Where did you buy your dress? My dress was called Splendour by Suzanne Neville at High Society in Cowbridge.

“ The venue was beautifully decorated, and the food was wonderful.”

“ We think the Pavilion is the most beautiful and iconic building in Penarth. It was the obvious choice for us.

Who did the catering? Fivestarchef. Who was your photographer? Sian Owen Photography. Who supplied the stationery? Abigail Trotman who works at the Pavilion designed our stationary.

Penarth Pier Pavilion The Esplanade Penarth CF64 3AU

Who were your bridesmaids? Sixteen of my best friends. They all dressed in pink dresses of their own choice. My Pink Ladies!

029 20 712100 info@penarthpierpavilion.co.uk www.penarthpavilion.co.uk

Would you recommend the Penarth Pier Pavilion to anyone thinking of hiring it as a venue? Absolutely! We had the best day ever!

Holton Road is also home to Barry’s library which overlooks King’s Square. The library has to be one of Barry’s most beautiful buildings. The square was originally known as Town Hall Square after the Town Hall was opened in 1908. In June 1910 a proposal was made to rename it King Edward Square after Edward VII, but as the proclamation ceremony of George V’s ascent to the throne had been held there the previous month, it was renamed simply King’s Square. Today Holton Road is a vibrant retail centre which continues to serve Barry’s growing population.

Autumn is here and it’s becoming darker earlier in the evenings. Your property is more vulnerable to thieves and intruders because it is surrounded by darkness for longer and there are fewer neighbours out in the gardens and streets to spot suspicious activity. Perhaps it’s time to beef up your security.

SAFE AS HOUSES

So how can you keep your home safe? Here’s Andrew’s top tips…

Just how secure is your home or business? Most of us tend not to think about it until something actually happens but being proactive can give you a real edge against those who covet your property. According to police, your home is ten times more likely to be burgled if you don’t have basic security measures - so now is the time to protect it. There are lots of things you can do to help deter opportunist thieves and keep your home secure’ most of which only cost a relatively small amount of money. “A little of time spent looking over your home with a ‘crime prevention’ mind set and a small investment in a few pieces of equipment could give you peace of mind,” says Andrew Nash of VOG Fire and Security in Barry.

Outside n Keep all entrance gates closed and put up outside security lights that come on when someone walks near them. The light need to be out of each, so make sure they are at least 2m high. n Use gravel on paths or driveways as it makes a lot of noise when walked on. n Secure sheds and outbuildings with strong bolts and padlocks. n Grow shrubs and bushes around your garden fence so it’s harder for someone to climb over - thorns are excellent. n Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place, like under the doormat or flowerpot - thieves know to look there first. n Keep your tools and ladders securely locked away – they could be used by a chief to get into your house. Doors n Only use solid frames for external doors - they should be at least 4.4cm thick, and all external doors should have a deadlock (British Standard BS3621), ideally the five-lever type. n Consider fitting security bolts to external doors as well n Fit doors with the strongest screws possible, not necessarily the ones that are supplied. n Have a security chain on your front door and keep it on. Also consider having a peephole so you can see who is outside your door. 117

Windows n All windows that are in easy reach should be fitted with window locks. n Make sure they meet PAS24 2012 (previously British Standard BS7950) and keep them locked at all times. Alarm and CCTV monitoring n There are many excellent systems available at a reasonable price but it’s important to have them installed and regularly maintained by experts. n Ensure your alarm system is monitored and regularly serviced. Many insurance policies have clause that void the policy if a system isn’t checked annually. That means, in the event of an incident, you won’t be paid out. Andrew says, “VOG Fire and Security specialises in the design and installation of systems. With the night’s drawing in, we can install SMART INFRA-RED cameras that provide not only excellent daytime video monitoring but excellent state-of-the-art night vision also. With a clever night vision system, even in low light or after dark, intruders or opportunists can be seen and identified. This is a growing part of our industry alongside our core business - alarms, access control, CCTV, gates and barriers and dummy security systems.” Andrew Nash of VOG Fire and Security, below right is rapidly becoming one of the Cardiff and the Vale’s go to experts on home and business security and is confident that they won’t be beaten on price.

Llanharan thrived during the industrial revolution, with several tin and coal mines in the location providing employment to the town’s residents. With the decline of heavy industry in the South Wales coalfield, Llanharan has become more of a commuter town.

It’s a charming village with a beautiful church at its heart - St Julius and Aaron. There’s a real sense of community spirit in Llanharan and rugby has always been part of that. Llanharan Rugby Football Club formed in 1891 and was awarded membership to the WRU in 1919. Their nickname, the ‘Black and Blues’, is taken from their colours - black shirts and shorts with three light blue horizontal hoops across the chest. Their home ground is named The Dairyfield.

We’re being bombarded with adverts for procedures for younger looking skin but who do you trust to carry out this work? You’ll only ever have one face and the advice we’re always given is do your homework. Luckily we’ve done part of this for you by introducing you to Dr. Ros Jabar. A fully qualified pharmacist and doctor, Ros is more than qualified to help you turn back the hands of time.

DR.ROS What homework should men and women do before they choose a practitioner? Important factors to consider are experience confidence and skill with detailed anatomical and pharmacological knowledge. Obviously I’m biased as I feel doctors and surgeons have a deeper understanding of one’s anatomy, because we actually see it on a constant basis. What treatments do you offer? I offer the full range of anti-ageing treatments including muscle relaxants, dermal fillers and skin treatments using genuine Dermaroller® for acne scars, sun damaged and ageing skin, facial and décolleté lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and severe scarring. You have some exciting news about a new treatment, tell us more? I am very excited to be able to offer the thread facial lift. This is known as the Silhouette LiftTM, only offered by doctors trained via a rigorous training programme. I have been invited to a world wide experts meetings in Barcelona to consolidate and share my skills. This represents a fantastic opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills providing a superb level of unrivalled aesthetic treatment. What is the Silhouette Lift? The Silhouette Lift™ gives you the opportunity to turn back the signs of ageing, without a general anesthesia, without hospitalisation and without a long recovery time. This non-invasive procedure is used to lift and reposition sagging mid face tissue. This procedure can last two to five years but claims to make you look at least ten years younger.

Who are your clients? I try to make my services accessible to everyone. My overheads are low; therefore I’m not hiking my costs to cover these. My clients are varied: stayat-home mums, dinner ladies, coffee shop employees – they come from all walks of life. I realise that money is hard to come by for most people, so this is reflected in my charges. Does low cost mean lower grade products? Absolutely not. Being a pharmacist, I understand more than most the composition of products. I only offer the best. Where is your clinic? I currently work from my office base in Severn Grove, Pontcanna but I am currently renovating a new, purposebuilt clinic in Kings Road, Canton. This will be a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly environment, as all things eco-friendly are another passion of mine. Do you treat both men and women? There’s no discrimination here! Men and women both age and we all want to look the best we can. What sets you apart from other practitioners in your industry? When you go into the medical profession it’s because you want to make a difference to people’s lives. This is achieved in many ways. But in aesthetics, I feel that my background in pharmacy, my medical profession and as a woman who knows the impact that aesthetics has on the confidence and wellbeing for men and women alike I know that what I offer is unique and unrivalled in its simplicity. ‘I won’t change your life but I will make a difference.’ I believe in exceeding expectations when it come to client care. This is reflected in my clients feedback and overall satisfaction. 127

THE LAST WORD Ever wondered what drives portrait, wedding, corporate and event photographer, Sian Owen? We find out.

Do your clients have their own ideas or do they leave it to you? Clients commission me because they’ve been recommended, they’ve seen my work and like my style of photography. We talk before the wedding/portrait/ commercial session to plan a brief that is unique to their way of life, their hobbies and interests so I can create a set of images that tell their story. I love to hear my clients’ ideas too. But I’m happy to work either way; some people would rather have no involvement with the creative ideas and leave it to me, which is great. Tell us a bit about what you do I’m a creative photographer that loves to capture moments in time and create long lasting memories. I photograph weddings, portraits and commercial photography. Portrait sessions take place on location at beaches or parks giving my clients a choice of beautiful backdrops for their family portraits. Where do you live? I live in the Docks area of Barry with my six year old daughter. Describe your home The best thing about our home is the view of the Bristol Channel from the living room. We can see Flat Holm and Steep Holm and, on a clear day, right across to Weston. Seeing the sunrise across the channel is beautiful, even the rainiest of storms are wonderful to watch from the living room window.

What makes Sian Owen Photography special? There are many reasons why what I do stands out from other photographers. I build a relationship with my client whether it is for their business or wedding or family portrait. Getting to know people and how they work means I can offer a personal service. I am always pushing myself creatively, learning new techniques and expanding my technical knowledge. I aim to produce one off images that are unique to each client. What is your background? I had a passion for taking photographs from a very early age; my parents bought me a camera for my 10th birthday as I was always using theirs. Twelve years ago I left school with a GCSE and A level in photography and immediately started work with a local well established wedding photographer in Cardiff. I photographed my first wedding with a Hassleblad medium format camera with only twelve shots per film; things have changed a lot since then!

What do you think a female brings to what is predominately a male profession? Gone are the days of photographers mainly being old men in suits. Good quality professional photography is created by understanding people, knowing your subject, and of course your camera. And believe it or not your personality, being approachable as a photographer makes the client feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera, resulting in images that my clients love. Where do you shop? I love to support local businesses so shop in Barry and Penarth as much as possible. What makes you happy? Quality time spent with my daughter and partner. Family and friends are so precious to me. It’s important to get that work/life balance right. Sum yourself up in three words Happy, creative, determined.

I then went on to work for a lifestyle portrait studio where I’d photograph new born babies, toddlers to teens creating unique stylish memories for their home. I was there for eight years, then set up my business two years ago. Where do your clients come from? My clients are mainly in the South Wales area. I occasionally travel to Bristol to photograph weddings and have had the pleasure of photographing a wedding in Europe. I also have corporate clients in the west of England. 129
