WELCOME

It’s not very often we get chance to sit back and reflect about what we love about any particular season so, with a hot cup of Nescafe (other brands are available), I pondered on what I love about autumn, my favourite season. Things may seem dark after 94 days of summer, but there’s always something to look forward at this golden time of year. When it’s about fashion, it’s a no-brainer; thick opaque tights, warm, cosy layers, the new season coats and boots (oh how I love boots!). If I’m thinking about food, then it has to be slow-cooked soups and stews and hot fruit pies with custard. And then there’s that nip in the air, the leaves turning red, the darker nights (not everyone loves them but I do), the onesies, the candlelit baths (with a glass of Baileys! - oh is that just me?) and the countdown to Christmas.

Whatever you enjoy about autumn, we hope it’s a good one and we’ll see you in winter. Jennifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

The summer has been a busy one. On a personal level, we’ve moved house which was a bit chaotic but we’re settled now. Porthcawl is a fab place to live. We love it in the summer, eating ice-cream along the promenade, but this gorgeous seaside town really comes into its own in the autumn. There’s nothing better than sipping a hot chocolate in a café on the prom watching the choppy grey sea. It’s been really enjoyable seeing the new season’s products fill the rails and shelves in the businesses across the Vale. I feel privileged to get to see it all first. I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone over the next couple of months.

If you see me on my travels, give me a wave and say hi. Alan Lloyd Client Liaison Manager 07860 930 399 alan@goodlifepublishing.co.uk

“Will you marry me?” - “Yes!” - “I love you so much and I promise I’ll make you the happiest person in the world!” - “Just one thing sweetheart, before we tie the knot, would you mind signing a legal contract saying that if we get a divorce, you won’t try to claim any of my money?”

TO PRENUP OR

NOT TO PRENUP What considerations will a Court take into account? The Court would always consider every case on its individual facts. However, the Court will consider various factors to include whether the parties had obtained independent legal advice, whether there was full financial disclosure by both parties, whether the parties understood the implications of what they were signing, if there was any element of duress or cohersion and whether there would be an injustice to one of the parties if the Pre-Nuptial Agreement were upheld by the Court. What practical steps should be taken? It is important that a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is drafted and signed by the parties as early as possible and not on the eve of the wedding. Ideally, both parties should take independent legal advice and each party should give full and frank disclosure of his/her financial position before entering into the agreement. More and more couples are asking about Pre Nuptual Agreements these days. We chat with Melanie Lazarus of Melanie Lazarus Solicitors, Bridgend to find out why. What is a Pre-Nuptial Agreement? A Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a document in which a couple, before marrying, set out their rights to any assets, debts and income which they may have acquired together or purchased individually and outlines how a couple wish to divide their money and property should the marriage end in divorce.

How does the Court approach Pre-Nuptial Agreements? The Court is guided by what is known as Section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act and is not obliged to give effect to Pre-Nuptial Agreements, but they are still used by Judges and Courts when deciding what type of financial settlement or order to make upon divorce.

“ The Court would always consider every case on its individual facts. .”

The agreement should address issues of pre-marital assets and inheritance for example. The aim should be to achieve a realistic and fair agreement which would not in due course appear unfair to a Court. Will a Pre-Nuptial Agreement deal with change of circumstances? An agreement should address life events such as provisions should the parties decide to have children and other changes such as an employment, illness etc. and what would happen in those circumstances. The Bhagotra family have owned Court Colman Manor since 1999. Vijay Bhagotra and his wife, Isabelle, managed the hotel until Vijay passed away in 2009. That’s when Sanjeev stepped in to continue his father’s vision.

COURT COLMAN M ANOR

What is the background of the Manor? Parts of Court Colman Manor date back to 1766, making 2016 her 250th Birthday! She has been the home for a succession of people who have guarded their privacy well but its history, to the best of our knowledge, is available in the history section of our website. Who is the current owner? I am the owner and Managing Director. I’m from Penarth but now live in Troes. I am involved in all aspects of the hotel, the face behind much of the interior design of the Manor and the instigator of the improvements recently completed. How many weddings do you cater for per year? We are very lucky to host more and more weddings year on year. In 2015, we had 85 weddings and we currently have 95 weddings booked for 2016, with more bookings still coming in. With packages available throughout the year, we are seeing more and more winter weddings, but we still have a strong demand for summer weddings.

Do you have a wedding co-ordinator and, if so, what is her name? Hannah Perry is the Wedding Co-ordinator at Court Colman Manor, working full-time on weddings and events. Do your couples have exclusive use of the Manor? Couples have exclusive use of the Manor on their big day. We feel that it is right to host one wedding at a time and understand that it is also what our brides and grooms expect from their wedding venue. Do you offer catering services? We do. We provide a range of menus for the wedding breakfast and a variety of buffets including hog roast, fish and chip cones, hot fork buffets and rustic buffets. We are proud to say that we use seasonal fruits and vegetables and local meats and dairy products throughout the hotel and our on-site, award-winning Indian restaurant, Bokhara Brasserie. Can you recommend suppliers? We can recommend all sorts of services and suppliers to our brides and grooms; from venue dressers to photographers, cake makers, bridal shops, musicians, wedding cars, florists… just ask. 12

What refurbishment work has taken place and to which areas? We are always looking to improve the Manor but the recent works have really excited both the customers and the staff. The Garden Room was looking a little tired and in need of some love. This function room is named the ‘Garden Room’ and features original floor-toceiling windows along its two exterior walls, which look out over the six acres of landscaped grounds here at the Manor. We wanted to embrace the strong tie the room has to the natural beauty outdoors, while still offering a bright and airy, functional space for brides and grooms to use during their wedding day. We had a suspended ceiling installed with beautiful new lighting to create a lovely ambience, featuring bird cage lighting, spotlights and the focal points, which are three large, modern chandeliers, nestled amongst foliage. The floor was replaced and the walls painted, with one wall featuring a ‘wall of leaves’. The new bar is the real focal point of the room, and is at its best when serving drinks by night - lit up in all its glory.

“ Court Colman Manor is perfect for making your dreams a reality.”

The room can hold 80 guests comfortably for a wedding breakfast, and is also licenced for wedding ceremonies. The Honeymoon Suite is another new delight for Court Colman brides and grooms. The room features a fabulous double jacuzzi bath set in the bedroom, in front a window that looks across miles and miles of countryside views. We are very lucky to be situated in such an idyllic location, with far reaching views from all the 30 rooms here at the Manor, but we wanted the Honeymoon Suite to really take advantage of our location. The idea is that after months of stressful seating plans and dress fittings, the bride and groom can unwind with a bottle of bubbly in the jacuzzi taking in the beauty that surrounds their wedding venue. The rest of the bedroom is opulently decorated, with one-off, custom-made furniture and a gloriously comfortable bed. The adjoining en-suite shower room is a treat in itself, with double showers and his and hers sinks.

How much money has been spent on the refurbishment? The total cost of refurbishment of the Garden Room and Honeymoon Suite is around £100,000 which we, and our guests, believe is money well spent. What makes Court Colman special as a wedding venue? Court Colman Manor is perfect for making your dreams a reality. With six acres of landscaped gardens, which feature a natural waterfall, rose walk and fish pond, guests can make the most of the tranquil, countryside location with drinks and canapés on the terrace (with exclusive use). The Manor herself is a Georgian Grade II-listed beacon with her bright-white facade glowing against the surrounding greenery. She boasts four different rooms that are licenced for wedding ceremonies of different sizes from four to 120 persons. Our fabulous wedding breakfast menus ensure no guest goes hungry, and menus and buffets can be tweaked to ensure every dietary requirement is catered for.

“ Parts of Court Colman Manor date back to 1766, making 2016 her 250th Birthday!” 13

Our passionate and dedicated wedding co-ordinator, Hannah, is on hand from your first viewing of the Manor to the last round of drinks at the end of the night. Once it comes to coats and carriages at the end of the party, guests who’d prefer to stay a little longer can rest assured that they will have a great night’s sleep in our range of bedroom types, which total 30 bedrooms in all. Six of the bedrooms have themes and are inspired by faraway lands, each of which offers a jacuzzi bath for ultimate relaxation. We are delighted to welcome guests to experience the delights that Court Colman Manor has to offer. Your brand says a lot about your business. Is yours delivering the right message? Vale Life chats to Katrina Dallimore, owner of boutique marketing company Cariad Creative, about local brands, social media and the key to successful marketing.

CARIAD CREATIVE

Hi Katrina, tell us a bit about Cariad Creative. Hello! Cariad Creative is a local marketing and design company based in the Business Centre in Barry. I set up the business in 2014, because as much as I loved working for large corporate companies, my passion is local brands and working with them to create new and exciting ideas. So what is it that you do? I see myself as an extension to my clients’ business for all those creative tasks that they just don’t have the resources or time for. From website design, social media management and blog writing, to consultancy work offering support with one off projects or a full marketing plans to help boost your brands presence online or offline. What would you say is the best marketing tool for small businesses today? Every business is different, so what works for one business may not work for another.

However, I always advise my clients to have a presence on social media. Whether you’re a large multi-national company or a one-man band, social media has a huge impact on a business’s marketing efforts for a relatively low cost. Social media can help businesses focus on expanding brand awareness, increasing website traffic, and build a community of loyal followers; all of which contribute to increased sales. What is the key to successful marketing? Consistency. Be consistent in everything you do - from branding across your stationery, daily updates on social media, to regular blog posts if you have one. Many small businesses try to compete with the marketing of large companies with huge budgets, and attempt too many tactics and can’t keep on top of it all. Review your marketing look at what’s working, what’s not and focus on a couple of areas and do them well. Not only will it make you look professional but also trustworthy. 14

For more information about any of the services provided by Cariad Creative, please feel free to get in touch - we’d love to hear from you!

“I’m not crazy,” laughs Neil Ballard of Lewis Ballard Accountants. Yet when he cycled into Jasper in the central Canadian Rockies, on 10th September, he will have cycled 405 km, over five gruelling days, crossing one of the world’s most beautiful but challenging mountain ranges. This route is in the ‘Tough’ challenge category.

A ROCKIE ROAD TO CHANGE

So why does a 52 year old accountant think swapping his comfy armchair for a torturous saddle ride is a good idea? I rode from Boston to New York with my wife Jan in 2014 so have an idea what’s ahead, although this ride is much, much, harder. I don’t know what’s more terrifying - cycling up some of the world’s tallest mountains or trying to control your bike as you come back down. My son Chris and I are riding with fifty fantastic Velindre Hospital fundraisers and the camaraderie really helps. When Jan reached exhaustion point on day four last time, this support got her through. Everyone has weak moments, even the cycling enthusiasts and professional sports people taking part.

When you’re a portly pen pusher like me it’s even more challenging. After ten hours cycling on day one, the last thing you want is to get up and go again the next day-never mind the next four! It’s really tough, but nothing compares to what people fighting cancer go through every day. When people ask ‘why do it again?’ I tell them it’s really changed my life. It all began with our first charity dinner in March 2010, which is now an amazing annual event, raising nearly £100,000 for Velindre so far. As a result, we proudly became Velindre Ambassadors and before long, somehow, we’d joined the Boston challenge. It’s like magic! Both 50, overweight, unfit, running our own business took all our time. We weren’t looking after ourselves. 16

Exhausting all the usual routes; gyms, diets, even personal trainers - nothing helped, because work always came first. We were jaded, stressed, miserable, but once we committed to the challenge we had to find training time and that’s when the magic really happened.

“My son Chris and I are riding with fifty fantastic Velindre Hospital fundraisers.” Work became more efficient, we prioritised more, and the changes to our health and wellbeing were astounding. The ride also tested us mentally and our self-belief and confidence grew. Now we no longer stress about things, as we know we can meet any challenge.

It’s not like a bungee jump, which is all over in seconds… We totted up over 1,000 miles before even getting to Boston. This time I’ve trained since January and already ridden 110 miles from Cardiff to Tenby and 60 miles from Brecon to Cardiff for charity, in preparation. Every mile (even when it’s raining) makes a positive change, for the charity and for me.

Lives on hold… At Lewis Ballard we see many business owners with no time for family, holidays or hobbies. Lives on hold, waiting for more time, when in reality there’s less with each passing day. We help them implement systems to build business value and add balance to their lives. Changing is difficult, yet, I’ve learnt that committing to something extraordinary can change every area of your life. Do it for charity or something more personal. The key is stepping right out of your comfort zone and seeing what it brings you.’ If you would like to sponsor Neil go to https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/NeilandChris

It’s a tough choice deciding where to book for Christmas and New Year. What’s the best venue? Who’s serving the best food? Where’s the best service and the best entertainment? Holm House in Penarth comes into its own at Christmas and New Year so we popped in to find out more.

HOLM FOR CHRISTMAS

What will Holm House be offering for Christmas and New Year? In December the hotel will be offering a delicious set lunch and party menu, served in The Welsh Room, from the 1st to the 24th. The head chef has put together a menu which is full of dishes that are perfect to eat in the lead up to the big day. An example of the menu could be rabbit and leek terrine to start, roast sea bass with leeks and samphire to follow and Holm House Christmas Pudding to finish. Two courses cost £23 per person or 3 courses for £26. A two course dinner option costs £26 per person and £29 for three courses. Anyone who regularly visits Holm House for one of their amazing Afternoon Teas will be in for a treat as in the lead up to the big day, the hotel is offering Afternoon Teas with a Festive twist.

There’s no better place to party? If you have been charged with booking the office party, then your colleagues will thank you for booking at Holm House. The hotel’s Christmas Dinner and Dances will be held on Friday 9th, Saturday 10th and Friday 16th December and will include a fizz reception with canapes and a stunning four course meal and dancing to a DJ until midnight. The feedback from previous years’ events has meant that these evenings are already filling up fast, so early booking is recommended.

And Boxing Day? Not many people can face turkey again on Boxing Day so our chefs have prepared a tasty alternative. A sample could be cured salmon and crayfish salad with Wasabi mayonnaise and baby leaves to start, followed by pan fried Cod loin with clam, pancetta and herb broth and to finish a zingy Lemon Tart with Italian meringue and chocolate sorbet. Vale Resort’s restaurant undergoes an £80,000 refurbishment The Vale Resort’s restaurant and bar area has been refurbished following an £80,000 investment, which has seen the size of its restaurant increase by almost 50 per cent. The facelift of the Vale Bar and Grill at the four-star resort in Hensol, south Wales, has included the expansion of the restaurant to create a new glass fronted conservatory style area, which has enabled covers in the restaurant to increase from 70 to 113. The new conservatory area can also offer private dining for groups of up to 20 people, and is being used by the restaurant to serve afternoon tea, as it offers guests panoramic views of the Lake Golf Course. When weather permits, guests can also take advantage of the terrace and dine al fresco.

“ The new conservatory area can also offer private dining for groups of up to 20 people.”

A complete re-design of the interior now welcomes guests with a contrasting lime and grey colour scheme, with modern copper lighting and accessories throughout.

So you’ve found the house you’ve been looking for. Whether it’s a first time home, an investment opportunity or you’re downsizing, whatever the reason, it’s important to understand the legal process.

HOPKINS L AW

Simple Guide to buying a house Helping you move forward Liane Farthing is head of Property and Private Client and as a Director runs a team of dedicated, approachable, knowledgeable and professional individuals, with years of collective experience and where we aim to offer a specialist service tailored to meet the individual needs of our clients. Working with Liane in our conveyancing department is Lisa Lake. Lisa has worked in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan for the past 25 years. Since joining Hopkins Law at our Cowbridge office, Lisa has brought a very personal, professional and efficient service which is borne out by the positive feedback received from our satisfied clients. Clients return to Lisa time after time and she is recommended by local estate agents with whom she has built an exceptional working relationship.

Here Lisa looks at some of your most frequently asked questions. What is the Conveyancing Quality Scheme? Hopkins Law is registered with the Conveyancing Quality Scheme. This is a recognised quality standard quality for conveyancing practices run by the Law Society. The aim is to create a trusted community of lawyers who have been assessed and are acknowledged experts in the field of conveyancing. Increasingly mortgage lenders insist on solicitors having CQS accreditation to deal with the mortgage aspect. When should I instruct my solicitor? If you are selling we recommend you speak to your solicitor before or as soon as you put your house on the market. Working with your Solicitor will ensure you have all the correct paperwork ready to be included with the contract documentation when a buyer is found. 22

If you are buying, again make contact before making an offer to ensure you are fully aware of the costs and disbursements involved. The Estate Agents will also request your solicitor’s details once your offer is accepted. Why have I been asked to provide proof of identification? This is because all solicitors have to comply with regulatory requirements which oblige them to verify the identity of their clients and source of funds. What’s the difference between joint tenants and tenants in common? When purchasing a property in more than one name these are the two different methods of co-ownership. This confirms what happens to the property if one of the owners dies.

“ A very personal, professional and efficient service.”

“ If you are selling we recommend you speak to your solicitor before or as soon as you put your house on the market.”

What is a Conveyancing “chain”? To avoid the risk and cost of owning two houses people usually elect to buy and sell simultaneously. A number of linked transactions therefore arise, each dependent on the other and exchange of contracts must take place simultaneously in all transactions, meaning that the speed of progress is dictated by the slowest link in the chain. What is the difference between “exchange” and “completion”? Exchange of contracts is the point at which the seller and buyer agree to commit themselves unconditionally to the transaction. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that all aspects of the transaction are satisfied before exchange. Only then will the Contract become a legally binding agreement on both parties. Until that point either party may withdraw from the transaction.

Completion is the date on which you move into your new property and vacate the old one - moving day.

Lisa Lake

Stamp duty land tax The Law has changed recently regarding stamp duty land tax and it’s important to fully understand the consequences of these changes particularly in the investment market, where you may be subject to the second home surcharge. Do I have any comeback on my seller once I have moved in? Generally no unless in limited circumstances there has been some form of mis-representation or a breach of the contact. It is very important for this reason that you check that all appliances, central heating and other systems are in good working order before you commit to exchange of contracts. 23

Glebe Street, Penarth is home to an array of independently run businesses. New to the street, above the blinds and shutters shop Abode, is Y Cwtsh, a fabulous interior design and fireplace company with a difference, owned by Deborah Edwards. Vale Life met with Deborah to find out more.

Y C WTSH LUXURY BY DESIGN What do you think makes Y Cwtsh special? Every client is different, every home is different. Clients can come in with a look they have seen in a magazine or even a single item and I can then create a whole story and implement it. I have a mantra for Y Cwtsh which is “The key to creative design is capturing the spirit of the client and the soul of the space”. Client Testimonials We have recently redecorated our drawing room in our Georgian manor house - the task I faced was very difficult until Deborah Edwards of Y Cwtsh came to call. She arrived with samples of wallpaper, sourced carpet and fabric to suit the era of the house and not only that, she listened to what and how I wanted the room to feel like. We are delighted with the project and will definitely ask for her help again and would highly recommend Y Cwtsh. Joy Evans, Fishguard What is your background? I have been in the industry for seven years. I am highly creative and am a huge fan of colourful, exuberant fabrics and colours. I have exceptionally high standards. Attention to detail is my forte as is my reputation for outstanding customer care. Why did you choose to open your business in Penarth? I have collaborated with Ian from Abode on a number of projects, so when he mentioned that the studio above Abode was available, it made perfect sense. Glebe Street is attracting more and more high quality independent businesses, like Anne Morgan Jewellery and Fauvette delicatessen, with more to follow.

Why did you choose to open above Abode? I wanted to offer my clients an intimate, quiet and calm space, where they would receive my undivided attention. Also, not having a shop front means that I don’t have to pass on overheads to my clients. What services do you offer your clients? I can offer either a metre of fabric or a full design service for the whole home. I only work with the finest fabric houses and favour the creativeness of Tricia Guild of Designers Guild, the explosion of colour from Manuel Canovas, the effortless elegance of Zoffany, the traditionalism of Colefax and Fowler and the understated Ralph Lauren. I also offer a bespoke fireplace service for the discerning client who wants to create a wow factor. 26

Deborah provided design inspiration, direction and support during what can be a mind boggling process- so many options - I am delighted with my scheme. K Smele, Cardiff Wedding dress made from Tricia Guild fabric

When Amy Westlake and her family moved to Penarth earlier in 2016, they immediately fell in love with the town and knew that this was where A Brush with Beauty should be. We chat with Amy to find out more.

A BRUSH WITH BEAUTY

Katie & Amy

Why Penarth? There is a huge emphasis on ‘support local’ in the town, which we fully support, so we started looking around for premises for chez ABWB and it took … a day! I knew as soon as I saw this beautiful shop we would serve each other well. What services do you offer? Since ABWB was established in 2004, I have styled 100’s (if not more) beautiful brides, both make-up and hair, for their wedding day. I adore my work and it has taken me to some of the most beautiful, and prestigious venues across the UK and oversees. Since this time, by meeting all kinds of different women and listening to their needs I have gained an insight to women’s attitudes towards make-up, both in usage and purchase. I have heard so many women tell me they’re often put off by the loud glitzy counters at the department stores as they feel intimidated. Now we have the studio at Royal Buildings, we have a beautiful and serene space where women of all ages can come to learn about make-up artistry by means of a menu of different make-up lessons available with myself and our small team.

“We can create ‘made to measure’ make-up palettes of all sizes.”

I also offer semi-permanent make-up procedures; namely microblading for brows. I’ve always been known for being a perfectionist (to the extreme!) I completed training as a medical tattooist and most recently I have added microblading to my repertoire. We love it here and by the looks of it so do the ladies of Penarth as our books are filling up through to Christmas! Who are your clientele? The majority of my clients are mainly women aged 30 and above. Tell us about your make-up ranges? Well for the past few years, whilst having our boys (as you do!) I have been working on our own range of professional cosmetics – ‘ABWB’. I collaborated with designers based in Canada and have created our first collection to launch with the opening of the new studio. The concept of ABWB is simply ‘bespoke palettes’. We can create ‘made to measure’ make-up palettes of all sizes that can accommodate everything from foundation and powder, to bronzer and blusher, to eye shadows and lipsticks … think pick n mix for make-up! We do not partake in animal testing whatsoever within our cosmetic range. We are also stockists of Lily Lolo, an organic mineral UK based company and Lord and Berry, a high fashion Italian brand. 27

What are their price points? £5.99 - £29.00 for single items and bespoke palettes range £21-£132.00. What do you think is special about ABWB? We like to be different; we love the concept of bespoke, we love giving amazing service and providing a ‘made to measure’ approach, all with a promise of no hard sell! What do you love about what you do? I simply love the power of makeup. How it can make us feel; how it can make an incredible difference to a woman’s confidence … whether traditional make-up or semi permanent make-up, it doesn’t take much to make a real positive impact. And yes playing with products all day too is pretty cool!

As every high street looks increasingly similar, it’s no surprise that our local independent boutiques are becoming more popular. That’s definitely true of Gingers, Penarth. Here you will get personal service, a warm welcome and experience from an owner who has honed her skills in choosing the perfect clothes and accessories for her loyal customers.

GINGER’S

Vale Life and Cathy set off to the gorgeously glamorous Etc in Penarth -the perfect backdrop to showcase Ginger’s autumn and winter offering. What excites you about this season Cathy? Definitely the colours and the fabrics. Sometimes when we reach a certain age, we can be afraid of colour and of trying something new. Customers trust us - when we suggest they step out of their comfort zone and experiment with colour, they love the results. Some will try just a shot of colour with an accessory - and that’s fine too.

How would you describe Ginger’s? Ginger’s isn’t quite the boutique you would expect. I like to think it’s more of a mini floor of a department store because it has a bit of everything. From daywear to evening wear, bags and hats – we have it all. Our full wall of jewellery from Dante, Rodney Holman and Lotus Feet and a wide variety of scarves means that we can dress you from head to toe. Our customers tend to be 35 and over and come from near and far.

Customers seem to love your brands. Ginger’s has been here for eight years and, in that time, I’ve learned to know what my customers want. They want quality first and foremost. They want classic and quirky and affordability. They like layering different pieces together in an unstructured look and that’s why Sahara, Zele, Capri, Adini, Flax, Pomodoro and Intown are my go-to brands.

“ I hope this feature illustrates the diversity of the shop. Ginger’s, along with other independents, is an important part of the community which is most important to me.” 28

“ I have clients who are looking for something a bit special and, if it’s not on the shop floor, then I can usually find it in stock.” I have clients who are looking for something a bit special and, if it’s not on the shop floor, then I can do my best to get it from our suppliers. I also have clients who don’t have time to browse so they’ll leave it to me to choose pieces for them. It’s all part of the Ginger’s service.

giving my all and seeing them happy is what brings me immense pleasure and satisfaction.

What do you think sets you apart? Going the extra mile is what keeps Ginger’s on the high street. Even with loyal customers, I never rest on my laurels. We live in a very competitive world with online and click and collect so it’s important to keep evolving. I want my customers to enjoy shopping here and, without sounding cliché,

It’s not difficult to see why Hawkes, the most stylish clothing emporium in Cardiff, is the first choice for well-dressed men from near and far. Russell and the team treat everyone who walks through the door with equal enthusiasm. If you do shop at Hawkes, you’ll be in the company of many high profile celebrities including Olympians, sports presenters and TV stars.

FROM MCCRORY TO RIO

Why Hawkes? That’s easy. We provide a genuine, old school service without being pushy and we won’t sell you anything that looks unsuitable. Also, we believe in offering customers the highest quality - it’s what our reputation has been built on over the years. Who shops at Hawkes? We welcome anyone from all walks of life. When you step over the threshold of Hawkes, you will get the same level of service and enthusiasm that any A-lister would receive. I’m not one to brag but I’m very happy to work with top Olympians, sports presenters and TV presenters. Rugby legend, Jonathan Davies, radio and tv presenter, Jason Mohammad, professional boxer, Glenn McCrory and Simon Weston CBE shop here.

We have customers who live right here in Cardiff, and from all over Wales and London. Londoners realise that they can get great quality suiting and labels for half the price that they would pay if they shopped in London. If it’s a day at Cheltenham Races, a wedding or special event, TV appearances or a suit for work - we can cover everything at Hawkes. What’s the importance of really good tailoring? Most people don’t need a made-tomeasure suit. Spectacular results can be achieved with a suit that’s off-the-peg if it’s properly altered. At Hawkes, we carry six different shapes of suit and can generally get a fit spot on.

However, if you do feel like treating yourself to a bespoke suit, it will look fantastic and you’ll get exactly what you require s, such as slim lapels or pink button holes. Everything is possible. How long does a bespoke suit take to make? On average it takes about an hour to measure you. We discuss your choice of cloth, linings, style and the event it’s required for. The next six weeks will be spent cutting the cloth by hand for a perfect and lasting fit. Any style or size can be accommodated and we fit customers from 36 short to 50 long. The result is a perfect fitting and highly individual garment.

“ Superb quality clothing, shoes and boots and accessories, which take you from day to evening.” 30

“ I just love my job, working with people who appreciate the quality I supply them and thanking you for making their occasion a special one is a great feeling.” Russell

What can we expect for autumn/winter? Superb quality clothing, shoes and boots and accessories, which take you from day to evening, from our awardwinning brands Mayer trousers, Eton shirts, Remix, 7 for All Mankind, Remus, Without Prejudice, Circle of Gentlemen, Holland Esq, Jeffery West shoes, RM Williams boots, Trapper Leathers, Roy Robson, Without Prejudice and Barbour. A few words from Gary Lockett, Ex World title challenger and boxing TV pundit... I met Russell a while ago when he offered to ‘get me in a nice suit’! I’ve been a pundit on Boxnation, which is a boxing channel on Satellite tv, for about three years now and for the last year Russell has looked after me with some lovely suites and attire.

I’ve been complimented on the way I used to look and the way that I shape up in a suit these days. When I bump into boxing fans they always praise my attire and that is testament to the class and know how that Russ possesses. If I were to need a suit I’d always visit Hawkes as Russell is very good at what he does, he leaves no stone unturned when it comes to dressing an individual up.

“ We believe in offering customers the highest quality - it’s what our reputation has been built on over the years.” 31

Lorraine Thomas is delighted to be back in the heart of John Street where she first started out in fashion 34 years ago - and thrilled to welcome her son Paul to the business, which is now a joint venture.

A FLAIR FOR FASHION

Lorraine came from a teaching and social work background, and the original ‘Flair’ was opened in 1982 on a whim. She had to learn fast, but with a keen interest in fashion, and also in people, she soon built up a loyal local clientele. Over the years this clientele has expanded to include customers from much further afield. We asked Lorraine the reason for her move back to John Street from her premises in Lias Road. “The new shop was opened in August this year, as we wanted larger premises in a more central location.

In the new store we are stocking White Stuff and Great Plains for the first time, because with the space to offer new ranges we decided to include more quality labels which appeal to a wide age range.” That sounds great, and what other ranges will you be carrying we asked? “For this autumn season we also have beautiful ranges from Marble, Adini, Capri, Casamia, Lebek and Junge. White Stuff is already flying out of the store, because it is so popular, and customers are delighted to find it in Porthcawl. 34

Our fabulous continental coats are also selling well, because customers know them for their quality and style.” Looking around this Aladdin’s cave of gorgeous clothes, pretty costume jewellery by Dante and Gaby, the new season’s handbags, and colourful scarves that would brighten up any outfit, we’re in retail heaven. And what’s more, Lorraine tells us that due in shortly are their beautiful faux fur hats and scarves. All of these would make perfect Christmas presents - and the store also sell gift vouchers, a perfect gift idea for those you just don’t know what to buy for.

The byword for ‘Flair’ has always been ‘Distinctive Ladies Fashion’, and Lorraine and Paul’s aim is to offer beautiful, stylish clothes at affordable prices. However your turn has arrived fellas - Paul has introduced some fantastic men’s clothing ranges here since joining his mother in their new store. Locals to Porthcawl will know Paul from his other businesses, including - on John Street: The Beach Locker Shop which sells men’s and ladies casual wear, and Wales In Union, a leading supplier of Official Welsh Rugby Union products as well as Welsh gifts and souvenirs.

The comment often made by customers at Flair is ‘You have such lovely things here.’ They aim to provide excellent customer service; many of their customers have become good friends and it’s easy to see why. Lorraine and Paul are excited to be in the heart of John Street, welcoming customers old and new, and we’re delighted they’re here too.

Based in Ewenny, independent boutique Samantha B is a haven of well sourced smart casual and co-ordinated separates, and enjoys a well-deserved reputation for outstanding customer service. Vale Life chats with owner Sam as she was putting the final touches to one of her many popular fashion shows…

SAMANTHA B

Sam, we must say we’re surprised by the size of your store - and of the ranges of clothes you carry. You’re not the first to say that. New customers are always taken aback at first, in a pleasant way obviously. I think people expect us to be a tiny out of town store - it’s lovely to see their delighted expressions when they first walk through our door; plus they all appreciate the free parking right outside our store! We love the colours we can see in here right now; can you tell us what’s new for A/W16? Thank you; the pops of lime are great as an accent colour for the usual autumn/ winter navy, black and greys - and berry shades are perfect too for highlighting the season’s neutrals.

We have some to-die-for tailored jackets, and our fantastic jeans from Marble and Olsen are flying out of the door. Also our new range of waterproof jackets is proving to be very popular. What brands are your most popular? Our best sellers are definitely Olsen, Marble, Bianca, Adini, Emreco, Pomodoro and our newest range from Pont Neuf. We’re the only stockists of Olsen and Bianca in South Wales so we do have customers popping in from far afield to pick up their increasingly popular pieces. Do you have a typical customer? Not at all; our wide ranges suit all tastes, and change frequently. So if you’re looking for a new top, dress, skirt, or even accessories, it’s likely we’ll have something that’s just right for you. 38

Ah you mentioned one of our favourite words ‘accessories’. Us too; you can totally change the look of an outfit with carefully chosen accessories. We carry a great range of scarves and necklaces (perfect for Christmas gifts) and we provide a much-loved service for bespoke hats and fascinators which can be made to match any outfit bought here. We also offer a first-class clothing alterations service - very popular for turning up a skirt or pair of trousers.

We understand you’re putting the finishing touches to a fashion show that’s raising much needed funds for local charities right now? Yes, and the next one, and then the next one; in fact we’re involved with one fashion show a week at the moment - right up until the end of November. We donate 10% of all sales at each event to charity - it’s our way of giving something back to the local community.

“Our wide ranges suit all tastes, and change frequently.”

We recommend a trip to Samantha B - and soon - you’ll be amazed at the fabulous clothes and accessories you’ll find there, some of which are perfect as Christmas gifts (you can thank us later) Oh and you can also pick up gift vouchers here too - for the person who’s impossible to buy for!

One of the amazing things about shopping at Bryl’s Boutique on Barry’s High Street is that Ann and Lousha seem to stock everything I absolutely must have to complete my wardrobe. I know this is more judgement than luck, as they both know what their customers want and cherry pick the best pieces from their designers to hang on their rails. This season is no exception.

BRYL’S BOUTIQUE

“ Whatever the occasion, age, or your budget, there is something for everyone.” What’s the point of driving into Cardiff, queuing and paying for parking and trudging through the shops when I can pop to Bryl’s and take my pick from brands such as Ted Baker, French Connection, YAYA, Darling, Masai, Sandwich, Great Plains, Joules, FeeG, Helen Moore, Rieker and Ugg.

Premium Fur Pom Pom hats are flying out no sooner than they’re being re-stocked. Loved by stars of TV, film, music and Vale women alike!

Whether it’s for casual or evening wear, shoes, accessories or even jewellery, Bryl’s has it covered. It really is a one stop shop that houses a great mix of brands so that whatever the occasion, the age or your budget- there is something for everyone. They’ve also introduced a couple of new brands which add to the fab mix. Joules for example provides a great casual, “easy to wear” offering and I’m not surprised to hear that their Poppy of London

Let’s not forget shoes and boots. Combining style and comfort, the ever popular Ugg and Rieker brands are sure fire winners. There’s also a great range of jewellery to complete any outfit.

Sticking with the faux fur theme, the Helen Moore collars, cuffs and wraps are to die for! Try one on and you’ll know what I mean.

As Christmas is just around the corner, wouldn’t a Gift Voucher from Bryl’s Boutique be gratefully received? I think so! That’s my autumn/winter wardrobe sorted - what about you? 43

As anyone in business will know, it was a big leap of faith for Alicia and Lesley to take on another project but, once they had seen the property and visualised its potential, the entrepreneurial spirit in them kicked in. Here, they tell us more.

THE GRIND HOUSE

Chef, Matthew Beck

As anyone in business will know, it was a big leap of faith for Alicia and Lesley to take on another project but, once they had seen the property and visualised its potential, the entrepreneurial spirit in them kicked in. Here, they tell us more.

What have you done to the property to open? To get the property to where we wanted it to be, it needed major redecoration, the installation of a much needed extraction system, and an injection of shabby chic.

What attracted you to the new project? If we are honest, initially we thought it was a mad idea but, when the previous owner suggested a take-over, after much deliberation, we thought it was too good an opportunity to pass up on. The High Street is a thriving, busy shopping street with lots of quality, independent businesses who we thought deserved a quality offering of good food, good coffee, and our style of décor and great service - The Grind House was born.

Tell us about your chef… We are so lucky that Matthew Beck presented himself to us. He is wellknown in Barry and lives just up the road. He has a fine pedigree, having worked in a variety of venues. His brother is a chef and gave him his start in Dyffryn Gardens. He cut his teeth as a pastry chef at the Michelin Starred Lords of the Manor in the Cotswolds. He has also worked as Head Pastry Chef at St David’s Hotel and as Sous Chef at The Celtic Manor. 46

What’s on offer at The Grind House? We are open from 9am until 5pm on Monday until Thursdays, and from 9pm until 11pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. Our cooked breakfasts are proving very popular (you must try the “Grind House Grinder”) as are our lunch dishes which include panini’s, jackets, salads, open sandwiches and baguettes, all freshly made. Matt’s style of cooking is classic gastro pub and he has created a fabulous evening menu, with each dish priced at £10 or under, and includes dishes such as meat or vegetarian platters, slow roasted pork belly with carrot mash and sticky jus, pan fried sea bass with crushed potato and seafood veloute or chicken ballotine with gnocchi and spinach cream.

‘The Grinder’

Alicia & Lesley

Desserts are priced at under £5 and include home-made (white chocolate and raspberry) brioche bread and butter pudding, lemon posset or warm chocolate brownie. Given Matt’s experience, he only uses the best quality produce. We also offer a fantastic range of cocktails which are proving really popular. What’s the ambience like? There are restaurants in Barry that are more formal and that’s great but we wanted to offer something a bit more chilled and relaxed - efficient but not obtrusive. What’s the feedback so far? We’re delighted. One diner’s comment sums it all up we think with these words, “Friday girls night out here was

fab... delicious food, great service and lovely atmosphere. A great new addition to High Street!” Thank you Delor Brown for your kind words. Do you offer private bookings? We have already had a number of private parties book the venue. If the party is large enough, we can offer exclusivity too. What do you think is special about The Grind House? The food, the service and the relaxed, chilled atmosphere. We occasionally have live entertainment and are planning to have monthly gourmet evenings and themed nights. We are also thinking about opening for Sunday lunches but we will have to see what the take up is on that. 47

With Christmas and New Year around the corner, what are your plans? We will be offering a two course lunch for £12.95 during the month of December and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will be priced at £18.95 per head. Some people enjoy spending Christmas at large hotels but others prefer the more relaxed, chilled vibe that we can offer. We are already taking bookings. We are really looking forward to our first Christmas at The Grind House! The Grind House 86 High Street, Barry CF62 7DX 01446 679768 Like on Facebook

As our fantasy collection comes to a close, so does the summer. Its fiery horizons have now petered out into the smouldering embers that glisten and flare with rich warmth of autumn’s palette.

USTU The forest surrenders its leaves to the breeze and allows shards of light to pass, illuminating its offerings like a kaleidoscope of tumbling confetti, as if to rejoice in its glory one last time before winter has us in its grasp.

This time the task fell upon Lauren Salamon (hair) and Jodie Donovan (beauty) to interprate it as they wished. I am fortunate enough to share my days in the company of artisans; a team of passionate individuals who love what they do whilst doing what they love!

Who might you see as you stare into depths of the forests? Is she bold? Is she fierce, gentle and fair?

How could I not love my work when all I see is beauty in so many forms and passion from so many creative souls?

A sister to nature, warrior, queen, and caretaker perhaps? Who knows? But what is certain is that our creatives at USTU have captured the essence of autumn and presented her to you in this final piece of art. A fitting piece to close the circle of the seasons.

You really should call us.We would be proud to share it with you. “We Are USTU and you, will always be welcome.” Wayne, Paul and the Team x 48

Having gained a tremendous reputation as a trainer who gets excellent results with one-to-one personal training, Marvyn Bailey has developed a strong team around him that caters for all areas of fitness. With thoughts of trimming down before a round of Christmas parties we popped by to chat with Marvyn and check out Omnium’s fantastic facilities…

M ARVYN BAILEY

PERSONAL TRAINING

“Omnium has over 80,000sq feet of leisure space.” Marvyn, what’s your background, and what led you to setting up your two training facilities? When I was younger I was very overweight and decided something needed to drastically change. I became passionate about training and was always reading and researching fitness and nutrition - as I was getting fitter I started playing more Rugby, over my playing career I was lucky enough to play rugby in a few different countries; New Zealand, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. With the luxury of plenty of free time around my rugby training I trained as a personal trainer and nutritionist. I started training clients and fellow players around my rugby training days and thoroughly enjoyed helping others achieve their goals and seeing their characters and confidence grow, it was a huge feel good factor for me.

Due to persistent injuries and being diagnosed with CFS/ME illness I was forced to retire from rugby, which gave me the opportunity to go full time with the Personal Training. What facilities are available here at Omnium? Omnium has over 80,000sq feet of leisure space; our extensive gym is packed with state of the art facilities including Life fitness and Hammer strength equipment, our fantastic range of adults and children’s classes include the popular Rikashake, plus we have an indoor football area, functional fitness area, healthy eating café & coffee shop, crèche, physiotherapy treatment rooms, hair salon, beauty salon, supplement store, brand new changing rooms, conference/function rooms and our new sports bar. Our aim is to be the number 1 leisure facility in the UK. 50

That’s impressive. Why do your clients come to you to train? Our results speak for themselves. We’re not about the latest fads and trends but tried and tested methods founded on the latest industry thinking, with our clients at the heart. Our expert team represent the best in the industry. Their depth of technical and scientific knowledge is evident in our style and approach, both from a diet and fitness perspective. Unlike others, we do not judge or critique but work with each person to find a solution that is unique to them. Following an initial consultation (focusing on diet, fitness and lifestyle) our programmes are underpinned by fundamental philosophies which provide the stimulus for our clients to achieve great results.

From a cardiovascular perspective, we use the most efficient styles of training to best achieve the physiological adaptions required. Our ability to use the science behind the training in a fun and dynamic format means sessions are both enjoyable and effective.

With two great facilities to train from; Omnium Lifestyle Village in Bridgend and One to One Gym in Treforest, plus the knowledge that it’s the quality of your training rather than the quantity what are you waiting for?

What would you say to our readers who would say they don’t have the time to train? We can show you how to train efficiently and make the most of your time exercising, there’s no need to be spending hours in the gym on mundane cardio equipment, the quality of your training far outweighs the quantity. Our training sessions last 40-45 minutes which is all you need.

Malmo Hearing is a family-run business devoted to offering the best solutions for all your hearing needs, and is Voice’s Business of the Month.

M ALMO HEARING

Malmo takes its name from its founders, Mal and Mo Johnston, who first opened the doors to their flagship store in Bridgend during the winter of 2007. Mal is a qualified audiologist who has many years’ experience working within the field and Mo is the company’s secretary, and is also a hearing aid wearer. The Johnston’s know how hearing loss can affect the whole family, not just the individual, as Mal and Mo’s children and grandchildren have suffered with hearing difficulties at some point in their lives.

Additionally, this family-run business knows first-hand how frustrating it can be waiting to solve a problem with your hearing, especially with long waiting lists and limited hearing aid options from the NHS - at their practices, people can be seen to quickly and efficiently, solving most hearing problems instantly. Leanne Andrews, who is the hearing aid audiologist for the new Newport branch, and also Mal and Mo’s daughter told us, The response since opening our new store has been incredible. I don’t think we were expecting such a high demand for our services. Not only that, we’ve already had many referrals from the people of Newport, due to the great customer service that we give to each and every one of our customers. We recently won the Customer Service Award at the South Wales Business awards 2016 for our hard work and commitment to our customers. “We’re open six days a week, during which our core services are hearing assessments, hearing aid demonstrations, repair and servicing of hearing aids and micro suction ear wax removal. 54

We supply advice and products to protect your hearing such as if you are a musician or work in construction where there is a lot of noise - we also provide hearing protection for shooting, radio communication, swimming and snoring. Our dedicated Ear Wax Micro Suction removal service is quite popular too - this is where we remove wax from the ear if there has been a build-up of wax or an underlying infection. We also carry out assessments by appointment for noise induced hearing loss claims and medical negligence on behalf of legal practices’ clients. “Tinnitus is a common hearing ailment, but we have many solutions for this as each case is different. We stock a great range from Starkey to combat tinnitus, which can deliver personalised relief that customers can control.

“Hearing aids have come on leaps and bounds in the past 10 years.”

Hearing aids have come on leaps and bounds in the past 10 years, and we stock a fantastic range that can be synced to your smart phone and television, and can be controlled by a remote or app on your phone - it’s truly amazing, your telephone conversation or favourite TV programme can be streamed straight into your ear through the hearing aid. “To make the right decision when choosing a hearing aid, you have to consider more than just the cost.

Local hearing care for local people this is the philosophy of the business and what sets us apart from the competition. We sell better hearing, not hearing aids. Also, we’re not tied to any particular manufacturer so this allows us to independently provide an unbiased choice for our clients’ needs. So, if you’re having difficulty with your hearing or know someone who is, why not pop along to this friendly, familyrun business, who will do their very best to help you.

The level of hearing loss a potential client may have and their lifestyle must be considered along with what level of technology would be needed. “Many factors need to be addressed so that the client gets the best advice and a good choice, and solution, to their particular needs. “This is where our years of experience and customer service is key. We offer a 60-day money back guarantee on all our hearing aids. We support our clients by providing warranties, scheduling regular free of charge checkups and providing assistance as and when they need it - so a truly all round local service.

Cardiff Beauty Clinic officially opened in March this year on Newport Road, Rumney. Word has it that celebs have already been spotted there, taking advantage of the clinic’s non-surgical facial and body rejuvenation treatments. City Life chats with owner Charlotte McNeill.

CARDIFF BEAUTY CLINIC

Charlotte, what led you to opening your own salon? I’ve worked in the beauty industry for over eighteen years and decided I wanted to open my own clinic. I thought I could bring fabulous tried and tested treatments to Cardiff that would make our clients look and feel better, without breaking the bank. I’m passionate about the superb results our excellent value treatments offer, and my team and I strive to do the best we possibly can at all times to make our clients feel at ease. What treatments do you specialise in here? We provide fat freezing, HIFU noninvasive facelifts, cavitation (which is for weight loss and cellulite removal), radio frequency (tightens the skin beautifully, perfect for a baby belly), derma roller, derma pen, facial peels and Brazilian bum lifts.

What are your most popular treatments to date? That would be our Cryolipolysis Fat Freezing. CoolSculpting is the only FDA cleared, non-invasive fat freezing treatment that eliminates fat cells with no downtime. On average we see up to 40% fat reduction in the area treated after a single treatment and, best of all, it’s permanent. Also, our HIFU facelift is extremely popular. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) lifts and tightens skin for a non-surgical face lift and neck lift – we see spectacular results with this – in fact it’s become one of the most sought after non-invasive lifting treatments for the face and neck. And the results last for up to two years – it’s perfect for banishing lines and tightening up jowls and double chins.

56

Do you have any plans for the future? Yes, big plans. In November we’ll be offering IPL (permanent hair removal), Microblading and Semi-Permanent Make Up. Then, in the new year, we’ll also be offering tattoo and semi-permanent make up removal; plus we’re also looking to open clinics in Bristol and Swansea. So, if you’d like to look your best for the endless rounds of Christmas parties coming up, why not giving Cardiff Beauty Clinic a call, and please mention City Life. There are even a couple of extra special offers to tempt you.

“ A professional friendly consultation followed by a life changing treatment programme has now made my baby belly beach ready.”

If so, I encourage you to resist the temptation to shave. Shaving barely lasts a few days and leaves you tackling bristles constantly. What’s more, shaving makes hair grow back thicker and coarser. Yuck! In comparison, waxing removes hair from the roots, reduces hair growth over time, and lasts for up to three weeks. Imagine that! In addition, DON’T alternate between waxing and shaving – you’ll only get frustrated. That’s because you’ll need at least 1cm of hair growth before you can get a good wax. When you shave, hairs will regrow at different rates – so you have to wait for them all to break through the surface. Otherwise your wax won’t as long. reasonable. Their prices are last exceptionally Waxing leaves you feeling delicious. Friends have had treatments in other

establishments and 16have paid £100s more. I couldn’t recommend the practice enough and have done so to several of my friends. Tynycoed Surgery 20 Merfield Close, Bryncethin Bridgend CF32 9SW 01656 726959 www.tynycoedsurgery.com

“So far, I have had Botox to my forehead and have been really happy with the results.” 59

So don’t be seasonal… keep up your good habits. And if you’re a wax newbie, you don’t need to wait for the summer to pop your waxing cherry. Instead use the colder weather as an excuse to cover up and let it grow without anyone knowing your secret! Then when you’re ready to be hair free, pop into your award-winning waxing salon right here in the centre of Cardiff. We’re a specialist salon with handpicked, highly skilled waxologists who’ve all trained in advanced techniques. So rest assured you’re in good hands. And if you’re worried it might hurt, don’t be. Our clients are always surprised how relatively pain-free their treatments are. So whether you want to de-fuzz your pins, tame your lady garden, or clear up your underarm jungle, you can trust us to give you all the ‘ooh’ without the ‘ouch’. Starting nursery can be exciting, and a little daunting, for both child and parents, and both can be nervous about this new adventure. Four year old Amalie James was ready to begin her learning journey and, after trying a few taster days at St Clare’s School in Newton, Porthcawl, she couldn’t wait to start. Vale Life joined Amalie for the day…

A DAY IN THE LIFE

ST CLARE’S PORTHCAWL

Amalie arrives at 8:15am

She says hello to her friends and hangs her coat up all by herself whilst her teacher chats to grandma, Bev Howe, an ex-pupil herself. Amalie’s mother, Hannah James, was also at St Clare’s right through to the Sixth Form. Amalie looks around the Nursery eager to begin the day’s activities. This month’s theme is insects and Amalie spots one of her favourite books on the table, The Hungry Caterpillar. At St Clare’s, pupils are introduced to structured learning and challenged through theme related activities, with a strong focus on developing early literacy and numeracy skills. Amalie looks at the wormery and checks the butterfly farm to see if the caterpillars have changed into chrysalides yet.

Amalie can’t wait to get started! She loves playing maths games on the computer or mini iPads. It’s Thursday so Amalie has ballet first. Her favourite thing is when they all pretend to be little fairies skipping around and putting a spell on the sleeping giant (Miss Brown).

10am

Amalie washes her hands and gets ready for snack time. St Clare’s has a healthy eating policy - yummy fruit with milk or water. Today Amalie’s mum has packed strawberries - her favourite! Bev Howe, Amalie’s grandmother says, “It is a pleasure to bring my grand-daughter into the nursery each day - she is a joy to watch; skipping across the yard full of enthusiasm to learn and play with her friends. Her confidence continues to grow, as do her skills. She loves to bring her reading books home and 62

do her homework! It makes such a difference having two qualified teachers and a good support team teaching the little ones. Well done. Thank you for all your hard work.” Amalie’s mum, Hannah James, is delighted with St Clare’s, “Amalie has settled in at the nursery better than we could have ever hoped - she’s in a lovely little class and she honestly enjoys every single day. The teachers are so attentive and supportive and although she will be sad to leave nursery she’s equally excited about moving up to reception class. I’m constantly recommending St Clare’s to other parents, not just because of the level of education but because of the lovely community feel the school has for the children and the parents.”

“ Teaching is Excellent.” Estyn 2014

Head, Simon Antwis

It’s a beautiful day and Amalie’s teachers’ really believe in outdoor learning. The large secure outdoor play provides the perfect environment to help children develop physical skills, whilst extending and enhancing their cognitive and social skills.

11.30am

Amalie gets ready to walk over for lunch in the modern dining hall. Nursery fees include a healthy home-cooked lunch. Amalie loves being able to have vegetables no matter what she’s having but she especially loves the roast potatoes!

3pm

It’s home time for some and the friendly staff chat to parents but, today, she is in After School Club which is available until 6pm. Amalie and her friends enjoy a light tea in the dining hall and games and crafts until grandma collects her at 4:30pm.

On her way home, Amalie chatters away about everything she’s done today. “She likes the work, playing outside and her friends. She also really enjoys reading her reading book with her teacher,” says Amalie’s mum, Hannah. Hannah told the school that Amalie had settled into nursery very quickly. The few taster days really helped, and Amalie couldn’t wait to start. “The teachers, staff and pupils made her feel very welcome. I think because it’s a lovely small class she got to know everyone very quickly. I found her days to be a lot more structured with a very good balance between learning and play,” she adds.

“ Teachers and staff share high expectations of them- selves and of the children” Estyn 2014 63

St Clare’s in a non-selective independent day school for boys and girls aged 2½ to 18 years and parents and children benefit from: n Small class sizes n Full-time qualified teachers in the nursery n Wrap around care 8am to 6pm n Surprisingly competitive fees St Clare’s are also keen to point out that: n Childcare Vouchers accepted n An Early Years Grant is available Early registration is recommended.

It’s not every day that a chef with ties to one of the most famous cruise liners in the world decides to leave the ocean waves and open a brand new restaurant specifically for us land lovers. But that is exactly what has happened with Southcott’s.

SOUTHCOTT’S

Opened in February of 2016, Southcott’s is the brainchild of owners Huw and Lisa Southcott. Lisa is a former primary school teacher, and Huw previously worked as a chef aboard the world renowned, luxury liner Royal Queen Elizabeth II in addition to several other cruise companies, independent hotels, and restaurants. Returning to land and settling in Porthcawl to be closer to family, the Southcott’s quickly became a part of the local community by opening their new restaurant that, despite being open for less than a year, has already garnered a loyal following of regulars. This eighty seater fish and chip restaurant currently offers a sit in and take away service for its delicious main meals, as well as its cool selection of ice creams and sundaes, plus offers a range of coffees and cakes, with gluten free and diary free options available.

Huw and Lisa are also more than happy to host any celebration event you may need a venue for. Located where the Sidoli’s restaurant used to reside, Southcotts is one of the largest cafe/ restaurants in Porthcawl. Huw and Lisa are keen to let readers know they are very family friendly and have good disabled access for those in need. Lisa said, “We have plans to extend our opening hours into the evening, Huw and I are hoping to possibly develop a bistro style service, giving the local area an alternative eatery with a range of grilled meat, fish, and vegetarian options alongside their current menu of classics.” This will begin on a trial basis at first with the possibility of it becoming a permanent feature if customers approve. In the meantime, they are implementing a baby changing facility into the restaurant to make popping out for a family meal as convenient and (hopefully) as stress free as possible. 64

Huw, Lisa, and their team at Southcott’s work tirelessly to ensure that all customers leave the restaurant happy. Huw says, “We offer customers freshly cooked food, generous portions, value for money. It’s important we’re competitively priced and there’s always a friendly atmosphere.” Southcott’s is a wonderful, family friendly restaurant that goes out of its way to make sure you enjoy yourselves. Try it for yourselves next time you’re in Porthcawl.

Recognised the world over as food for sharing, we do love tapas. Vale Life chats with Dan Apsee, owner of La Cocina tapas restaurant and bar in Bridgend, as the popular diner approaches its first anniversary…

TIP TOP

TAPAS

Hi Dan, congratulations on your first anniversary, how would you say your first year has gone? Thank you; I can’t believe how quickly it’s flown by. It seems like just yesterday that we were refurbishing the building and building up our list of suppliers. The first year has been great for us and we’ve settled in really well; it’s a huge testament to our whole team who’ve pulled it all together. Our hard work has been so worthwhile; we’ve achieved what we set out to do in providing an authentic Spanish experience in the heart of the town.

“ The food is amazing and definitely plenty of it with so much flavour.”

We’ve had some fantastic comments; our customers are enjoying what we have to offer and many people say our restaurant and bar is a massive step in the right direction for the town. Many regulars have commented that what we’re offering is exactly what the town needed, and that people will now invest in coming back into the town. That’s great news. And what can we look forward to at La Cocina over the festive season? We’ve already started taking Christmas bookings and we’re filling up fast. Our Christmas menu is now available and includes dishes such seared wood pigeon breast with pancetta, peas, baby gem lettuce & a blueberry purée, and roasted pork belly with a sage and onion crust, pickled fennel & parsnip crisps. 66

Desserts will include sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, and cinnamon and Cointreau raisin rice pudding, brûléed on top. It’s a menu we’re confident our customers will enjoy very much. We also have our gift vouchers available again this year - they’re the perfect stocking fillers for family and friends. Do you have any plans for the future? We’re constantly striving to provide the best possible experience for our customers, and we’ll be showcasing a selection of new dishes in the coming months in preparation for a fresh menu in the New Year. Also, two of our bartenders have reached the final of the Southern Comfort ‘Southern Showdown’ in Bristol - competing against the best of the South West region.

This will be the first time a venue in Bridgend has had representatives in a cocktail final, so as you can imagine we’re over the moon about that. Unhurried, a great choice of appetising dishes and an enviable drinks list which includes a range of delicious cocktails; what’s not to love! Set amongst the natural beauty of the Afan Valley, The Brit pub is a proper country establishment with cosy log fires, great ales, delicious food, and all the character and charm of a ‘ye olde’ traditional pub. All of these ingredients combine to makes this the perfect location to visit during the colder months of the autumn and winter. The Brit is not just a pub, it is a destination.

TRUE BRIT

The people behind The Brit Pub have taken great care to retain the character and charm of the wonderful building during its recent renovation, with classic log burning fireplaces and flagstone floors being some of their customers’ favourite features, whilst also adding a little twist to help The Brit stand out from the ‘Inn’ crowd. We really like the fact that most of the furniture has been upcycled to give it a new lease of life and transform the potentially ‘rubbish’ objects into everyday usable items. Even their beautiful bar has been fashioned from the old floorboards and doors that were senselessly and sadly covering up some of the classic features before the renovation. At this cool pub’s core is a desire to create a proper pub atmosphere where friends and family can meet for a drink, enjoy the old fashioned art of chat and conversation, with no televisions, fruit machines, or loud music of any kind.

The recipe certainly seems to work and this, combined with a good choice of Real Ales, Guinness, lager, and cider on tap, as well as a great selection of fine wines from around the globe ensures that, drinks wise, you’re taken care of admirably. Add good, homecooked fayre and the type of friendly service you would normally only expect from close family and friends and you have, what the owners believe to be, a real pub experience. Their seasonal menu is all made in-house, with all dishes expertly prepared by their skilled and creative chefs. Everything is made from scratch, including all of the sauces, and the chefs are constantly creating delicious meals individually prepared for each customer. The menus boast a range of food to suit different tastes and appetites from light bites and pub classics, to a selection of game, poultry, fresh seafood, and seasonal vegetables. The Brit also offers an afternoon high tea with all the desserts and scones being home-made. 70

“ At the pub’s core is a desire to create a proper pub atmosphere.”

The cosy and intimate restaurant can seat up to twenty eight people and is the perfect setting for occasion dining whether it be as a couple, or with a group of friends. Food can also be eaten in the snug, as a secondary dining area and the garden when the weather permits. There are also three rustic bunk rooms available with four large wooden homemade bunks. Comfortable and cosy, and perfect for cyclists and walkers enjoying the stunning scenery of the beautiful Afan Valley. With separate shower facilities, a shared drying room and lockable indoor storage to keep bikes safe overnight.

Cobbles Kitchen & Deli is housed in a gorgeous 17th Century, Grade II listed barn on the fringe of the spectacular heritage coast in the heart of The Vale of Glamorgan. Vale Life catches up with owner Chloe Francis as she prepares for her inaugural Autumn Garden Festival of Food and Drink…

COBBLES K ITCHEN & DELI

Chloe, what led to you setting up your Autumn Garden Festival of Food and Drink? I was approached by Creative Rural Communities who were working with Dunraven Estates on a pop up pilot on the Estate and I thought it would be the perfect venue for people to come and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings and eat some delicious food produced by some of the many excellent suppliers our area has to offer. I’m working with Narelle from the Roaming Caravan Co on this who was awarded the same bursary as I was to help start Cobbles Tell us a bit about the event? We’ve got loads planned! We’re going for a lovely autumnal theme and incorporating Halloween celebrations into it too.

“We’re working on a spooky Halloween themed menu for half term for the kids.”

We will use all four gardens so we’ll have different areas including a kids area - there will be loads to keep the kids entertained including a scary haunted house bouncy castle, facepaints, fancy dress competition, a spooky trail, a hay bale maze and lots of crafty bits and bobs too. There’s lots of entertainment also, with live acts from a drumming group called Womp, Zumba, and of course live music from our headline act: upcoming indie band Fire Fences. All this plus amazing food and drink - it’ll be a fantastic day. You were just opening your deli last time we spoke, how’s that doing? Great thanks, the deli’s been booming since opening and our deli lunch deals have been going down a treat since we launched this offer a few weeks back. Basically, you can call the deli or just turn up and for £5 you can have a freshly baked filled baguette, a packet of Welsh crisps, a drink and a homemade cake or Welsh-cake. It’s a bargain! 72

We’re also loving how many people are popping in for their hassle free tea from us too. There’s always loads on offer to feed the family; our homemade pies and lasagnes are always a huge hit. And how are you getting on with your planning application to use the rest of your barns? We’re pretty much there with the planning application now. We’ve had a few stallers along the way, namely the resident bats that have been found but we’re on the finishing straight now and work should be starting towards the end of October. What’s new on the menu at Cobbles Kitchen this autumn? We’re working on a spooky Halloween themed menu for half term for the kids. I’m planning on transforming the big barn into a haunted house for the week, and any children that arrive in fancy dress will eat for free!

And we know your first anniversary’s looming - what have you got planned for that? Definitely a big party!! It’s great because it’s on the 5th December so everybody will be in full on festive mode so we’ll have lots of amazing things happening at Cobbles to celebrate our birthday and getting everyone involved. Anything else planned for the future? We’ve taken on some big outside catering parties recently including catering for the Ladies Day at Corntown Cricket Club, so this is a side of the business we’re looking to expand.

The autumn and winter months can be a bit miserable. The weather is wet and cold, and it has started to get darker in the afternoon making you wish that is was summer again. However, don’t let silly things like that ruin a beautiful season. Put on some layers, grab your big coat, and head to a place that will have you feeling happy again in no time. I am of course talking about…

THE FOUNTAIN INN

This traditional and beautifully rustic restaurant, found in Aberkenfig, is the very epitome of a traditional Inn, and the exposed beams are just the start. The atmosphere you’ll find is within is electric. Walking in, the staff will make you feel like a regular, even if it is your first time visiting. They go out of their way to make sure that your time with them is the best it can possibly be, making sure to offer the very best food and drink, along with some traditional favourites too. Speaking of the food, what they have on offer is simply mouth-watering. From a twice weekly carvery to classic pub favourites, and even afternoon tea. What’s more, The Fountain Inn is now also introducing a brand new burger menu alongside the already amazing menu they currently have on offer. Just some of the items available on this new menu include:

The Famous Fountain Burger Pork and chorizo burger topped with bbq pulled pork, streaky bacon and collier’s cheddar cheese. Cwm Risca Mountain Burger Welsh lamb and mint burger served with beef, tomato, spinach, cracked black pepper and crème fraiche.

This November 5th the Fountain Inn will be hosting a Bonfire Night display whilst serving a hog roast, paella, and hot dogs, whilst throughout December, the Inn is available to host private parties and get-togethers to celebrate the holiday season. But make sure to book soon, as spaces go quicker than Santa on December 24th.

Cefn Rider Prime Welsh beef burger with collier’s cheddar cheese, crispy streaky bacon and mushrooms. Sliders A trio of mini minted lamb, beef, pork and chorizo burgers. If that wasn’t amazing enough they also have a brand new range of Welsh Ciders to help accompany your meal including the crisp Gwent y Ddraig. Along with the Autumn and Winter months come plenty of reasons to celebrate and have a good time, the most important of which are Bonfire Night, Christmas, and New Years. 74

With so many companies in Wales offering bi-fold doors and windows, it can be difficult to choose the right company. The best endorsement for any company is a testimonial from a happy customer. Rob and Valerie Gooding (and son Jules) allow us into their beautiful home in Dinas Powys to share their bifold story.

POLISHED PERFORMANCE

Who are you and what do you do for a living? My name is Rob Gooding and I am the Managing Director of Fiddes Group. We manufacture a range of wood finishing products, having done so for over four generations. We also acquired a sports line marking business in 2005, Bowcom Ltd, and this now forms part of the Fiddes Group. We manufacture and supply the line marking paints and applicators for various amenity sectors, including schools and Councils through to the Premier League and RFU/WRU major stadiums and training facilities. How long have you lived in Dinas Powys? I have lived in the property for seventeen years, with my wife Valerie who is French and Head of MFL in Secondary School and Jules who is in year 9.

Did you contact other companies for quotes? Yes, one well-respected Cardiff company visited and quoted, however never followed up on their quotation, and then another, who again quoted. We contacted them again to enquire about their quotation - they promised to respond but, again, failed to follow up. Alexander James on the other hand were prompt with their quotation which gave us even more confidence in using them.

What work did they carry out? They supplied and fitted three sets of bifold doors. One set leading off from our kitchen/diner into the garden, the other from our lounge, into the garden and the other from Jules’s room, which again leads off into the garden. How long did the process take? We were surprised at how little time it took. All in all, only three days.

How did you hear about Alexander James? Through Andrew Farmer. I knew Andrew from secondary school.

Were they prompt, clean and tidy? Yes. We didn’t even know they were there, they were so professional. They cleaned and tidied up after each day. They arrived on time on the days they promised that they would be there.

What made you decide to work with Alexander James Bifolds? Namely Andrew. He is very professional and attentive. Although our connection wasn’t the main reason we went with Alexander James, it does help to know and have faith in who you are dealing with.

What difference have the bi-fold doors made to the way you use your property? They advised on what system would be the most effective in allowing more light into our property, whilst remaining sympathetic to the originality of our home generally.

Our house is circa 1915, so low ceilings and quite dark, these windows have lightened the rooms considerably, are easy to maintain and made a significant difference to the overall ambience of the areas in which they have been installed. Our kitchen area was perhaps the most challenging, as there was a large breakfront, with oak doors and pillars which limited the design options. Andrew created a design that maximised the amount of light available, whilst reducing the number of frame and panel breaks to a minimum. We want to install a log burning stove in the kitchen area and they even gave us advice on how best we might do this as they were familiar with all of the Fire and Building Regulations needed. We regularly have friends and their children over and the new space has made a huge difference.

We now make more use of the garden and the patio area and feel like the garden is now more a part of the home. Were they competitive in their pricing? Yes, competitive. Did you find them value for money? Yes, and the follow-up has been very good.

Would you be happy to recommend Alexander James to others? Yes, most definitely. Alexander James Unit 3A, Ashmount Business Park Upper Forest Way, Swansea SA6 8QR 01792 794549 sales@alexanderjamesbifold.co.uk www.alexanderjamesbifold.co.uk

When Tracey Smith and her family moved into her property on Rhoose Point, she loved it straight away. She wasn’t as much in love with her lounge/dining room however, so sought the services of local interior design company Room Designs, Barry. Vale Life met with Tracey to find out more.

CREATING MEMORIES

How long have you lived in your property? We have lived here for nine months. We moved here from Sully. We absolutely love it here. It’s so peaceful and within a minute’s walk, we can be walking around the lakes on the point and are two minutes from a secluded beach. The lake area is like a mini wildlife park with swans, ducks, dragonflies and rabbits. It’s idyllic. Who lives there with you? I live here with my husband and our two twenty-four-year-old (children!). How did you hear about Room Designs? I drove past the shop and immediately liked the look of it so popped in to see more. I met with the owners Meryl and Jodie and immediately connected with them. They were so lovely and enthusiastic.

“I now feel that my house feels like a home.”

Did you get other quotations? Yes, I did get quotes from Next and Laura Ashley and they both came in with quotations which were in line with Room Designs but after meeting with Meryl and Jodie, I felt comfortable and confident to give the work to them.

I loved it immediately and it now hangs on my wall.

What services did they provide for you? We wanted to put our own stamp on our living room/dining room. It had a carpet on the floor which needed replacing but we weren’t quite sure what to replace it with. Meryl came for a home visit with no charge to discuss ideas. Inevitably, in conversation, we talked about personal matters. I told her of my dad’s passing and his love of animals, especially elephants. She saw the silver elephant ornament that my friend had bought me. Meryl obviously took all of this on board because when she came for her second visit to discuss colours and showed me samples of fabrics, colour schemes and paint swatches, she also showed me the beautiful elephant print.

Meryl added gorgeous cushions to the sofas and several ornaments which added the final touches. Room Design even put up my curtain poles and curtains for free which I thought was a lovely added touch.

84

Meryl suggested a wood effect flooring in grey, which I wasn’t absolutely sure about, but as soon as it was fitted, it was the perfect choice.

Did you have your own ideas or did they do all of the creative design? I had my own ideas plus the input from Meryl.

How long did the project take? From start to finish, it took about eight weeks. Did you find Room Designs competitive? Yes, very competitive, plus they went the extra mile for me, which in my opinion sets them apart from other companies. They also provide a much more personal service which is difficult to find elsewhere. What difference has their work made to the way you love your home now? I now feel that my house feels like a home. It has a very welcoming, cosy feel and, for once all of the colours match and each room tells a story. The floor is amazing, easy to keep clean and very on trend. I’m delighted with how it all looks. Would you recommend to friends and colleagues? Absolutely. They say that the best advertisement is a satisfied customer and that’s why I was more than happy to offer my testimonial to Vale Life. 85

Choosing bespoke furniture is the best way to ensure that each piece reflects your lifestyle and blends in effortlessly with its surroundings. Once previously seen as an expensive option this has never been less true as we found out by chatting with two customers of family run Designers Sofas Direct.

DESIGNER SOFAS DIRECT Amy Morris

Amy what made you choose Designer Sofas Direct? Being a part of a local family business I know the importance of shopping and supporting local businesses. Plus they’ve been trading for over thirty years which gave me great confidence in them. What furniture did you choose, and how did you find the whole process? I had a custom-made, crushed velvet, corner piece for my living room. I will be honest; I wasn’t an easy customer as my measurements were very big and I knew, in my head, exactly how I wanted it to look. However, from start to finish the whole service I received was outstanding. Lynne kept me informed during the whole build and I was able to view it half way through production. What do you love most about your new furniture? I love everything about it, every little detail was finished to perfection I couldn’t be happier, everyone loves my sofa. Would you recommend Designer Sofas Direct? Yes, I would definitely recommend them to anyone - in fact after posting a photo of my new sofa on a social media account I’ve had so many texts from family members and friends asking where it was from. People really should try this great, skilled, local company who can make fantastic quality pieces. I will admit at first I was worried it would cost way more than previous pieces because it was being custommade but it wasn’t! It actually came in cheaper than others I had previously seen. I will be back as I already have plans for another single piece to match my corner sofa.

Derek Campbell Derek, how did you hear about Designer Sofas Direct? I drove past their showroom; our new house is just behind the Designer Sofas Direct factory.

Amy Morris

What furniture have you chosen? Sofas; a matching pair of a two seater and a three seater sofa, and we also commissioned a large corner unit for our planned extension. We also had two existing chairs that Designer Sofas Direct have re-upholstered for us, so we have a contrasting suite in another room. And what made you decide to commission bespoke furniture? We looked at other furniture stores but they didn’t have the choice of both shape and fabric that my wife and I were looking for. We found that with professional guidance from Lynne and her team, having our furniture made for us gave us much greater choice and enabled us to create spaces that are uniquely ours. Having said that, the two storey showroom at Designer Sofas Direct does have a great range of ready-made furniture to choose from, including over 200 sofas. 88

How was the process from start to finish, and would you recommend Designer Sofas Direct? Absolutely; I couldn’t fault the service - from our first contact to final delivery Lynne helped us a great deal; explaining what they could do for us and how we could basically mix and match whatever we wanted. Communication was great throughout the extended period as we ordered everything together but of course delivery of our final corner unit had to wait for our extension to be completed.

WOODEN TOPS FURNITURE A PAINTERS TRUE PARADISE

What led you to setting up Wooden Tops Furniture? I used to work for South Wales Police working a 24 hour shift pattern and although this used to be my dream job, since having my daughter, who is now 3, my priorities have changed and I wanted a more stable work life balance. We found ourselves trying to juggle home life and living like ships passing in the night, along with the stress of arranging child care, and having no family time or routine for our daughter. I’d been thinking of a business idea for a while and I came up with selling second hand quality furniture and the idea quickly evolved from there. I came up with the name of Wooden Tops Furniture and my vision for the shop began.

“Highly recommend Wooden Tops for service, selection and advice.”

We pride ourselves on selling only quality pieces of furniture; everything from Welsh Dressers to Wardrobes. Although we specialise in Vintage, Antique, Mid Century, and Chesterfields, all at affordable prices, we also stock a lot of solid wooden quality furniture such as pine - giving reliability and value in an otherwise throw away world. The furniture will range from pieces that clearly need some attention and upcycling to the more antique. The idea of the shop is that there is something for everyone whether you want to keep it as it is, paint it, or commission the piece for painting. The shop was recently described by a customer who paints a lot of furniture as a ‘Painters Paradise’ as every week we have new stock! We understand your mum, Julie, is your business partner? That’s right, we really are a family business; we have nicknamed my mums role as the ‘Creative Director’ - she’s responsible for all the commission work that comes in and the paint workshops; she is very much the artistic influence. 90

My role is the day to day running of the shop; sourcing the furniture to stock the shop, admin and managing our social media accounts, website and eBay shop.

“ A gem of a place, so glad we found you.” Can you tell us about the paints you use here? We’re official stockists of Frenchic Chalk & Mineral Paint which is a water based, odourless, toxic free paint with zero VOC’s making it the healthier choice for your family & pets. Between their Original & Lazy range there are 45 beautiful colours to choose from - along with waxes, sheens, brushes & stencils. In the New Year we’ll also be stocking the new Frenchic Outside range which will be 5 gorgeous paints for exterior use. We have also began to stock the extra bits you need to paint such as water based wax finish varnishes and the various ancillaries you need for painting such as rollers and sandpaper.

We understand you run courses here too - what do these involve? Yes, we hold both full and half day beginners Frenchic furniture painting workshops every month and in the New Year we’ll be looking to include skilled technique classes such as decoupage, crackle glazing, patina finishes etc. Workshop details are added to our FB page and can be booked in store or over the phone with a 50% deposit to secure a place. We are also able to offer group/corporate sessions or one to one classes on specific dates upon request. We will have special gift hampers for painting, decoupaging and stencilling on the run up to Christmas plus Gift Vouchers for everything from classes, paints and furniture.

What does our resident gardening expert Rob Hodge advise us to do in our gardens this autumn? Read on to find out more.

GARDEN SURVIVAL TIME Don’t be fooled by thinking that the garden is all over and done with by the end of September! Autumn is the season to prepare the garden for the upcoming, and colder months of the winter period. Sometimes summer slips softly into autumn and other times we are thrown into it without any warning. To prevent any unfortunate casualties here are 8 simple jobs for the season ahead. 1. Pruning trees and shrubs. As their leaves drop you can see the framework of the plants so keep the pruning natural. 2. Don’t strip everything away, leave something for the birds to nest in, it’s their garden too!

3. Plant for next year. The best time to plant roses and shrubs is October to April, so make the most of that time.

8. Cut down and divide perennials ready for the borders to be mulched with last year’s compost.

4. Plant bulbs for next spring’s colour choosing a selection from Snowdrops and Crocus to Daffodils and Tulips.

Make the most of these quieter Autumn months, before you know it you’ll be battling the weeds with every spare second!

5. Wash and tidy pots and containers with a mild solution of Jays Fluid to get them ready for next Spring’s seed sowing. 6. Save your leaves to make wonderful leaf mould and compost to use on your borders in twelve months’ time. 7. Lawn maintenance - make sure the leaves are removed to let light through, cut the grass until the frosts start and start to work on removing moss and weeds by hand ready for the start of next season.

A conservatory is a wonderful way to enhance your home. It gives the homeowner an extra room, connecting the inside with the outside and allows you to enjoy your garden to the maximum. But what generally happens is that you can’t sit in them during the hot summer months, because it’s too hot, and, in the winter months, it can be too cold. Future Ideal Homes offer a solution with their tile effect replacement roof system.

R AISING THE ROOF

Mr. Stuart Matthews of Pontypridd and his partner Karen had a conservatory which they couldn’t use. Even with blow heaters, the room was too cold to sit in and when it rained it was far too noisy due to its polycarbonate roof. After seeing a feature for Future Ideal Homes in an issue of Vale Life, Stuart gave the company a call. Stuart tells us more. Did you contact any other companies for quotes? Yes, just a few. Being in the heating and building industry for most of my working life, I have a good knowledge of how the building industry works so when I spoke with Geoff from Future, I felt confident that we were speaking the same language. Also Karen went to the same school as Geoff, so there was some history there. I believe it’s always better working with someone you know.

I also researched online to find out exactly what type of roof we wanted and decided to go for an apex roof for the extra height. What work did Future Ideal Homes do for you? They took off the existing roof, replaced it with a new light alloy system with 100ml of insulation and replaced all of the gutters and downpipes. Were they clean and tidy? Yes. They were very professional and cleaned up every day. How long did the job take to complete? Following a visit from Geoff to discuss the job and measure up, he then gave me a call six weeks later to say that the materials were in stock. A date was arranged and the work was completed in only three days. 94

What difference has it made in the way you now use your home? We used to have patio doors dividing the kitchen and the old conservatory. Those have now been removed and there’s a much better flow to the house. We used to live in the lounge but now we’re always in the kitchen and conservatory. We’ve had quite a few parties here actually. We can’t hear any noise now when it’s raining - and we’ve had some heavy downpours recently. The heat distribution throughout the house is now a lot better too. We haven’t needed to put the heating on. Do you think the new roof has been worth the money? It is fairly pricey but the difference it has made to how we live has meant that it’s definitely been worth it. I couldn’t recommend the company and the system they use more highly.

“Selecting the right accountant is one of the best decisions a business owner can make for the success of their business. Specialists in dental practice accounting, Freemans Accountancy offers their many clients the opportunity to save precious time and money, and arrange their business in order to plan an enviable work life balance. Sounds good to us”.

F REEMANS FREEMANS City Life chats with Director/Owner Craig Freeman about his business, and also the inaugural Welsh Dentistry Awards which he set up…

Congratulations on setting up the Welsh Dentistry Awards, it’s great to celebrate the industry by recognising the talents of practices, labs and dental care professionals across Wales. Can you tell us what led you to set up the event? I attended the British Dental Awards 2 years ago as a guest of a client. There were hardly any Welsh dentists attending due to the location (Leicester on a Friday evening). I did my research and found there were also Scottish and Irish Dental Awards but no Welsh Awards. As a result I decided to set up the Welsh Awards, and it’s taken a year of planning to organise everything. As you’d expect, the Welsh theme will run throughout with the event being held in the Principality Stadium with ex Welsh rugby player Tom Shanklin as our guest speaker, and the awards are made out of Welsh slate & steel. Hopefully the event will be a huge success and we’ll be able to hold it for years to come.

We understand that any profits from this event will benefit Cancer Research Wales? That’s correct; also, as a practice we donate a percentage of our fees directly to Cancer Research Wales.

What led you down the path of accountancy services for dental practices, and what makes you stand out from other accountancy firms? I have a wealth of experience of dental practices from dealing with them in my previous employment. I fully understand the workings of a dental practice, providing a high quality, personal service to our 200+ dental practice clients. In the majority of cases clients will initially meet the partner of the accountancy practice but then a junior member of staff deals with them going forward – however, I manage my own clients which is fairly unique in this profession. We work closely with our clients to prepare accounts, assist with incorporations, value dental practices for buying and selling, providing a payroll service, assisting with joint practice activities and so much more. 98

Working in the accountancy field for almost 30 years, and specialising in dentists for almost 20 years, means that we not only have a wealth of knowledge relating to tax, accounting and business management, but also it means we have been able to develop fantastic partnerships with various businesses in the legal and financial world, this is an invaluable resource that means that if our clients want a loan, a mortgage, a pension, some legal advice or any other financial and legal related requirements then we will certainly know the best people to help. Over the years I’ve built up an enviable network of contacts, and as a result I’m often approached when someone wants to buy or sell a dental practice.

We understand you wrote a book on running a dental business last year. Yes, over the years I’ve seen many practice owners who see themselves only as dentists and forget they are business owners. In my book I provide clear, simple explanations of how to run a dental practice as the successful business it should be. Copies are available via our website.

Do you have any plans for the future of your business? Yes, we aim to work with more practices, including a wider geographical area. Our current dental clients cover from West Wales along the M4 to Cheltenham and London, and down the M5 to Truro.

Do you offer accountancy services for other professions/businesses? Yes, we provide our high quality accountancy services to a wide range of other business types, from retail and the leisure industry to clients in the television and film industry. What questions would you advise a business owner to ask when choosing an accountancy firm? How much experience does the prospective firm have in dealing with the industry they are in, but the main one for me is the first impression. The aim is to build a long relationship together, so ideally you’ll be working with someone you can get on with someone you feel you can approach.

“An utterly idyllic landscape! Superbly equipped and beautifully finished made this a home from home. It is with heavy hearts that we leave ‘The Laundry’ however it is only a matter of time before we’re back and hopefully for longer. It has been complete luxury and the memories will last a lifetime.”

TYˆ M AWR COLLECTION

Peter & Alexandra Davies’ have tastefully converted the five outbuildings in their extensive grounds into five luxurious selfcatering cottages called The Ty Mawr Collection, comprising five unique self-catering cottages. Ideal for a family break or that special romantic hide-away, all are graded five star by the Welsh Tourist Board and offer the very best in luxury living. Originally from Brecon, Peter met Alexandra in London where he was living at the time, and both resolved to invest in a property that they could develop together. They began their pursuit for the ideal investment property and came across the beautiful Cadw Grade II* Georgian mansion through an online property search. They could see the huge potential Ty Mawr had to offer and both fell in love with its location in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. They spent a year extensively renovating

the derelict outbuildings, converting them into four unique one bedroom cottages and one two bedroomed cottage, opening for business in September 2013. The names of the cottages reflect their former use and each has its own distinct interior design with private patios and stunning garden areas (perfect for dog lovers). The cottages are set in a huge 15 acre enclosed parkland with its own stream, perfect for guests to roam and walk their dogs. There is a private entrance and a guest car park at the rear of the cottages. OF LIFE CARDIFF

City Life magazine Reflecting Cardiff life City Life is the City Of Cardiff’s premier lifestyle magazine.

City Life is distributed right across Wales’ capital city covering Rhiwbina, Whitchurch, Canton, Roath, Llandaff, Radyr, Llanishen, Cyncoed, Pentwyn, Llanederyn, Fairwater, St Mellons, Grangetown, and Cardiff Bay.

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader

Friends and family celebrate Maria Farmer’s birthday

What a fantastic night was had by all at the celebration of Maria Farmer’s surprise 50th birthday party at La Cucina, Holton Road in Barry. The tapas kept coming, the band played all night (even husband Andy and friend Bryan Taylor gave a few songs!). Andrew and Maria would like to thank all of their family and friends for making Maria’s birthday night so special. He’s raised the bar for the next one!
