We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. W ELCOME

As I write this from my home in Rhoose, I’m thinking about what I love about spring. It’s easy for me as it’s one of my favourite seasons (autumn comes a very close second). I close my eyes and the spirited chirping of the birds in the garden reminds me that it’s arrived. I especially love the blossom on the trees in Penarth and, as I drive through the Vale, the daffodils and tulips in the verges and lambs in the fields near Cowbridge and Llantwit Major and, while I love the crashing waves around Porthcawl and Ogmore, it’s lovely to see a sense of calm return to our beautiful Heritage Coast. As the sun warms up our little corner of the planet, we get to enjoy leaving our windows open, sitting and eating outside and having to wear a few less layers. I love seeing the new spring fashions arrive at our indy boutiques, and our favourite restaurants have had their menu changes - it’s spring and we love ringing the changes. And, if you’re in the mood for change inside as well as outside, our independent interiors shops are bursting with ideas and colours for us to redecorate and spruce up our homes.

We’ve loved catching up with our existing and new advertisers, and hearing what you, our readers, love about our gorgeous county by the sea. We hope you have a lovely spring and, if you see us out and about, please give us a wave and say hello.

On a business front, this season is a prime time for new businesses to ‘spring’ up (sorry that was a little cringey).

Our fantasy cover We loved this image our fab photographer www.sian-owen.co.uk took at Porthcawl hair salon Ustu that we had to put it on our front cover.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

Vale Laser Clinic With summer just around the corner, we’re all thinking about beauty treatments. The Vale Laser Clinic offers permanent hair removal and tattoo removal plus much more. Emma Griffiths explains. What makes Vale Laser Clinic so special? We are a laser specific clinic, with stateof-the-art, British Made Lynton Lasers giving our clients the best, safest results possible. our professionally qualified laser technicians are continuously extending their knowledge with the latest applications and technologies. We offer a warm welcome, taking time to discuss your concerns and tailor make a treatment plan for you.

“ Our prices are competitive.”

What treatments are popular in the spring? We have lots of brides (as well as mother of the brides and bridesmaids) wanting their skin to be radiant for their forthcoming wedding who love our Environ Skin Rejuvenation treatments. They target pigmentation, blemishes, broken capillaries, while stimulating your own natural collagen and elastin to plump and firm the skin. Our clients love the regular Environ Skin Analysis events we hold where you can really see the deference their homecare regime and clinic treatments are improving their skin when they are re-analysed in a few months. Hair removal treatments are also very popular, especially in the run up to summer. On average it takes around 5/6 treatments to complete the process. Are your treatments painful? Treatments such as tattoo removal can be uncomfortable but the process is very quick and we have a cool air machine which cools the skin and takes the edge off the treatment. Hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatment is much more comfortable, the sensation is often described as having an elastic band flicked against your skin. 12

Are your prices competitive? Our prices are competitive as we don’t have high street overheads, which means we are able to pass these savings on to our clients. We offer 20% discount to all forces and have agreed discount schemes with local employers such as Lloyds Bank and Business Women Cowbridge. Create the perfect lawn Here at David Evans Agricultural Ltd (DEAL) we love a well maintained lawn, so here are some of our top tips for spring lawn maintenance. 1. Tidy up your garden - Clean up any debris, leaves and sticks on your lawn. Our STIHL petrol vacuum shredder SH 86 CE would be your perfect for the job. 2. Cut your grass - If you didn’t cut your grass during the winter, give it its first spring mow when it is approximately 2-3 inches high. Keep the blade level high on your lawn mower until late April May and then gradually start lowering it throughout summer. Try our Viking mower to achieve the best results. 3. Trim the edges of your lawn Trimming the edges of your lawn is a clear sign you take pride in the upkeep of your lawn. Our STHIL edge trimmer FCS-KM can create those sharp edges. 4. Scarify your lawn - Scarifying your lawn helps improve water filtration through to the soil preventing puddling and helping prevent diseases. Our Viking LB 540 scarifier would be ideal.

Spring Fair Ad 125x91.indd 5. Aerate e4559 yourPetersens lawn - RWAS Aerating your soil just means perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to get to the grass roots which will help create a healthy lawn.

1

6. Tidy up the lawn surface - Either use a good quality top soil or you can use the little plugs of soil from the aeration across the surface of the grass. 7. Water the grass if needed - There will probably be enough rainfall to keep your grass watered, but should we get a sudden spring heatwave, always water early in the morning or evening to reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation. TOP TIP: If you want to create a stripedeffect lawn, choose a mower with a rear roller. Our Viking MB545vr is ideal for creating this effect on your lawn. Divorce proceedings can be very daunting for many clients. Not knowing how the divorce process works can make an individual feel extremely anxious about starting the process, despite being certain that their marriage is over. Vale Life magazine finds out more from experienced family law solicitor Melanie Lazarus.

BREAKING UP NOT SO HARD TO DO Melanie Lazarus, Director of Melanie Lazarus & Co Solicitors Ltd is considered as one of the best Divorce and Family Solicitors in South Wales. The firm specialises in family law matters only.

Melanie is renowned for her pragmatism and fervent desire to achieve the best possible result for each and every one of her clients. Melanie and her team understand that clients are going through one of the most stressful times of their lives so it is extremely important that each client is dealt with in an empathetic way. Here, Melanie answers some of the most common questions relating to divorce. Do I need a Solicitor to get divorced? Many couples who separate are able to negotiate their divorce and financial settlement amicably between themselves. In some cases, it might seem that involving solicitors is unnecessary. However, it is a good idea to have at least one meeting with a legal professional to ensure you are fully aware of your rights and that your interests are properly protected.

It can often be more difficult for couples whose relationships and communications have broken down completely. If this is the case, this is likely to make the divorce process more difficult. It is at this point that involving legal professionals is required in order for negotiations to run more smoothly. How does the Divorce Process work? The Divorce Process is split into three stages; the filing of a Divorce Petition, obtaining Decree Nisi which is the middle stage of the divorce and obtaining Decree Absolute which is the finalisation of the divorce. The timescale for divorce varies depending on how amicably a couple can negotiate their divorce. I always advise my clients not to apply for the Decree Absolute which is the final stage of the divorce until financial matters have been resolved in full. In some cases, it may be more difficult and lengthen the process if one party does not agree to divorce. 20

What grounds are needed to initiate divorce proceedings? Before a court will grant a divorce, it must be proven to the court that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. There are different options when filing for divorce, the most common being based on one party’s ‘Unreasonable Behaviour’. Adultery can be used when it can be proven that one party has been unfaithful. If you have been living apart for over two years you are able to divorce on this fact provided that both parties confirm the separation has been for this length of time and both parties agree. Did you know that a couple is able to divorce if they have lived apart for five years and only one party is needed to agree to this? Finally, you can obtain a divorce on the basis that your spouse has deserted you for at least two years immediately before the petition is issued. We delve a little deeper with Melanie Lazarus of Melanie Lazarus and Company Solicitors.

“ Melanie is renowned for her pragmatism and fervent desire to achieve the best possible result for each and every one of her clients.”

Are there any reasons for not being able to divorce? A couple cannot divorce until they have been married for at least a year and must have a permanent home in Wales or England. You will also need to prove to the court that the marriage has irretrievably broken down by citing one of the facts mentioned earlier. Will I have to attend court in order to get a divorce? In most cases you will be able to obtain a divorce without appearing in court. If both parties agree to the divorce and are in agreement about who should pay for it, the Judge is likely to pronounce decree nisi and decree absolute in the absence of both parties. A Judge can request the attendance of both parties if the divorce is contested. How much does a divorce cost? Generally speaking, the divorce process can cost £1,000 - £1,500 including VAT, provided the divorce proceeds on an uncontested basis.

It is very difficult to predict legal costs in relation to a financial settlement as much will depend on whether both parties negotiate and reach an early settlement or whether an application has to be made for a financial order which could result in the legal bill running into thousands of pounds if the case were to proceed to a final contested hearing. I always provide clients with an estimate of costs once I have gathered information in relation to their case during the initial appointment. How can I protect my interests prior to divorce? The first thing I would advise my client who is separating is to stay in the matrimonial home. To leave the property puts the other party in the driving seat. It is important to collate your own financial disclosure to include any pension funds, savings and any debts prior to a divorce. 21

Once the nature of a client’s relationship has changed, the other party’s financial documentation is classed as confidential and as solicitors we cannot look at documentation supplied by a client which has not been legitimately gained. If you are considering divorce proceedings and require advice, please contact our offices where a highly experienced member of our team will be able to assist you.

In a little over three months, Cobbles Kitchen has grown into one of the most popular places to go for breakfast and lunch in the Vale! Currently ranked No.15 on TripAdvisor out of nearly 500 restaurants, and with glowing reviews, Cobbles should definitely be in your SatNav!

COBBLES K ITCHEN & DELI

With its quirky charm and character, Cobbles is an unforgettable visit, not only for its hearty homemade local food, but its enviable location on the stunning coastal path of the spectacular Heritage Coast. A stop here before, or after, a walk along the beautiful coastline of Ogmore and Southerndown would be time well spent. With daily deals to tantalise the tastebuds, including kids under five eating for free on Monday, free tea or coffee with any meal on Tuesday, cream tea for two for just £5 on Wednesday, and daily deals if you arrive by bicycle (an amazing 10% off the whole menu!). If you ever needed an excuse to get on your bike, this is it. One Saturday evening a month, the kitchen is invaded at Cobbles, in their aptly named ‘Kitchen Invasions’ with the first two months tickets selling out in just two days.

These events are highly anticipated, with the cafe transforming itself into a pop up restaurant with differing cuisines cooked up by different chefs each month. February saw the kitchen being invaded by Formula 1 Williams Team Chef, Jon Francis, which was a huge success! There’s also the opportunity to rent the newly refurbished hayloft which is ideal for baby showers and other events with catering packages available too! Owner Chloe Francis says she’s been overwhelmed by how amazingly supportive everybody has been with the new venture and is very excited about the planned expansion on the horizon which will enable her to accommodate more customers in the adjoining barns, as well as the launch of the Deli this summer, there’s quite a buzz. Pop in, or call to book a table at this gorgeous Barn in the heart of the Vale! 22

What do you do when you’re Russell ScottLawson and own one of Wales’ best gentlemen’s outfitters which is home to a superb selection of award-winning brands? Find even more...

AWARD-WINNING STYLE

Owner Russell Scott-Lawson boasts an enviable clientele; including sporting stars and TV personalities, who appreciate only the best brands and impeccable service. But don’t worry, anyone who steps over the threshold at Hawkes get treated like a star. We asked Russell why clients come to him in droves? “Our clients are busy people. They don’t have time to trawl the high street pulling outfits together. They want a one-stop-shop where they can find all of their favourite brands under one roof. They also need the services of a qualified tailor who can make any necessary adjustments to any garment so that it fits like a glove. They also know that if they have an event coming up and need something in a hurry, we can make it happen.”

“ On arriving at the store I was greeted and treated like a million dollars and fitted for an amazing suit.”

So what fabulous brands can we expect to see on the rails at Hawkes this spring and summer? Mayer Trousers, Eton shirts, Remix, 7 For All Mankind, Without Prejudice, Circle of Gentlemen, Holland Esq, Jeffery West Shoes, RM Williams boots, Trapper Leathers, Roy Robson to name but a few. We mentioned in our introduction that quite a few of Hawkes’ brands are award-winning and there’s no greater award in the fashion business than that afforded by Drapers which is the most admired and coveted awards in the fashion retail industry. Without Prejudice, Remix and Barbour can all boast one of these awards. Without Prejudice Without Prejudice has a clear mission statement: to champion product over brand, promote individuality over mass appeal and to never be influenced by a label alone. Without Prejudice’s unique tailoring comprises of the finest Italian fabrics; with every lining, button and thread hand selected in London. 24

“We are Without Prejudice, are you?” “Russell and the team at Hawkes have always bought WP in its purest form. By selecting the more unique and quirky pieces they offer their customers something different to the high-street and in certain cases totally individual to the store.” Alex Foley, Head of Sales Barbour This season welcomes Barbour International’s first Spring Summer collaboration with Triumph Motorcycles - one of the oldest names in motorcycling. A global success story, Triumph has long produced modern motorcycle classics alongside scramblers, urban sport and adventure bikes revered all around the world. Inspired by the company’s motorcycle heritage since 1936, Barbour International created the iconic motorcycling suit worn by racing teams across the globe in the 50s, 60s and 70s. For a true, biker inspired wardrobe, look no further than these two iconic names in the world of motorcycling.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

Richard Rees Was recommended by one of my clients who like me struggles to fit in off the peg clothes. On arriving at the store I was greeted and treated like a million dollars and fitted for an amazing suit. No messing around, 5 star service and lots of help and guidance. You’ve got a new best customer. 5 S TA R S

Stephen Quinn I went into the Cardiff shop to replace a shirt I had a problem with. I phoned them up and they said bring it in and we’ll exchange it. They couldn’t apologise enough and were ultrahelpful. Sadly what used to be good service, as Hawkes provide as standard, has all but disappeared in most other shops. I have purchased there before and have always experienced top quality and service. I love the styling, designs, materials and cuts and will be returning soon. Excellent! 5 S TA R S 25

A dream for many women, when Felicity Ladbrooke was just five years old she asked her mum to buy her a shop! Some years later Felicity’s dream was realised in 1981 when she opened her first shop selling shoes and handbags and soon came to the conclusion there was a growing market for fashion accessories.

GUIDING LIGHT

A member of the National Association of Goldsmiths, and a trained diamond appraiser, Felicity had the opportunity to open a jewellery shop in 1995 selling new and pre-loved jewellery. The two businesses became one in 2006 and Felicity hasn’t looked back since. Vale Life popped in to her popular Bridgend shop to learn a little more.

We repair and re-size jewellery and we have a lot of call for our jewellery remodelling service, especially for sentimental family pieces. We also have a watch repair service and we part exchange items, helping our clients to upgrade their jewellery. And, we offer a pearl restringing business; in fact our stringer restrung the Queen Mother’s pearls for the Queen.

Felicity, I must admit to being distracted by all your gorgeous jewellery, bags and shoes. While I steel myself to concentrate, can you tell us a more about what you offer? Well as you can see we sell everything from gorgeous gifts, that you may wish to keep for yourself (buy two to be on the safe side), to fashion accessories and clothes. Our jewellery is very popular and we sell across the board from costume jewellery right up to engagement rings and diamond pieces, both new and pre-loved.

The two businesses complement each other very well, and we’re very fortunate in having a lovely, loyal customer base. We have a fabulous dedicated team of eight; and we sell both here in the shop and online. Business has changed for everyone and it’s a challenge to find something new for our customers every season, but it’s a challenge we all enjoy very much.

A little bird tells us you’re involved in Girl Guiding? I‘ve been involved in Girl Guiding all my life and I’ve always been passionate about it. Guiding gave me great opportunities when I was young, and it’s a much needed safe space for girls to enjoy being themselves as we help them to reach their potential. I firmly believe that Guiding has helped me to become the person I am today. I’ve been the Chief Commissioner for Guiding in Wales for the last five years. During that time I’ve continued to make brilliant friends, and I’ve met so many people throughout Wales. For the Brownie Centenary we had a sleepover for 1,600 members at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff - an event I’m very proud of.

“ We repair and re-size jewellery and we have a lot of call for our jewellery remodelling service family pieces.” 26

And you’re the Deputy Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan? Yes, I’m very privileged to have been appointed to that position in 2010. I also sit on the Women in Wales committee, and have done so for nearly twenty years. The committee organises an annual lunch in Cardiff to celebrate the achievements of women from all over Wales whilst raising funds for Save the Children, to support their Welsh projects. The event this year is in the Swalec Stadium on 22nd April. We’ll be celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, and the guest speaker is Sir Malcolm Ross OBE who was previously responsible for the royal household. He’ll be giving us a very interesting insight into Royal life. The event usually raises in the region of £50,000 and is a wonderful day - we’ll be entertained by the fabulous Vernon Sisters; and we’ll enjoy a fashion show, a live auction and a silent auction as well as some wonderful raffle prizes.

“ We also have a watch repair service and we part exchange items, helping our clients to upgrade their jewellery.” The event sounds fantastic. Are tickets still available for this? Yes, tickets cost £60 and you can contact Tracy Marsh on 01443 230722 to book. However I’d advise doing this soon as tickets are limited. Making the Felicity experience a ‘WOW!’ is definitely the priority here and it’s easy to spot that great customer service is paramount. Excuse me now while I fully take advantage of some lovely retail therapy before booking my ticket to the Women in Wales lunch. See you there… 27

After leaving University Kelly Thomas enjoyed a career in retail but, after having her two boys, Kelly felt she needed to find something new and exciting to get her teeth into - then along came...

COOK! Why Cook? Having shopped in Cook on Wellfield Road, Cardiff, for several years I fell in love with the food. So when I heard the shop was for sale it felt like an ideal opportunity to get involved with something I truly believed in. What does Cook offer? Quite simply we offer quality meals which look and taste delicious, but which transfer from your freezer straight into the microwave or oven. What do you bring to Cook? Our team are proud to offer a service which aims to be above and beyond what you might expect. We like to get to know our customers and can offer help with deliveries, recommend new dishes and often offer samples of some of the food we sell. Who are Cook’s customers? Cook offer meals suitable for everyone, vegetarians, gluten free, children’s meals and baby food. We provide meals in one, two and four portions so you can mix and match if you happen to be feeding more than four people. Some of our best sellers in Cardiff are Moroccan Lamb Tagine, Fisherman’s Pie, Indonesian Vegetable Curry, Chicken Dijon and many more. We can cater for special nights in with Confit of Duck with a Juniper Berry Sauce, Beef Wellingtons and Sea Bass with Asparagus Tips with Linguine in a Lobster and Saffron Bisque. We also provide food suitable for parties and barbeques. We also have a wonderful array of desserts such as Chocolate and Truffle Torte, White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake, Passion Fruit Tart. We also have a range of cakes and puddings such as Carrot Cake, Victoria Sponge, Chocolate Cake and a variety of tray bakes bread butter pudding.

What do you think sets you apart? We find as soon as customers taste the food they want to try more as they realise how good the meals taste. I have a wonderful team, who make customers feel valued and there is always a happy atmosphere in the shop. We try to go out of our way to help our customers so, for example, we are happy to defrost puddings before collection, if requested. Do you deliver? Yes, you can either go on-line at www.cookfood.net or phone the shop. Spend over £30 and your delivery will be free if you live in Roath, Penylan, LLanedeyrn and Cyncoed. We also deliver outside these areas, but orders then have to be over £50 in value for delivery to be free.

“ Our team are proud to offer a service which aims to be above and beyond what you might expect.” 28

Actor and writer Boyd Clack is a big fan of Cook. “I live locally and having Cook nearby is convenient and the choice is excellent,” says Boyd.

If you ask most parents why they chose to send their child to a private school, the answer is because they believe their child will a) receive a better standard of education, b) have better opportunities for future careers, c) be more disciplined, and d) benefit from smaller pupil-teacher ratios.

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

All are good reasons. Vale Life chats to the Head of St Clare’s School, Simon Antwis, to find out more, particularly about the Nursery. Who does the school cater for? We are a non-selective school for both boys and girls aged 2½ up to 18. We have many pupils leave our Sixth Form at the end of Year 13 who have been with us since their Nursery days! What is so special about St Clare’s Nursery? Small class sizes, experienced staff, individual learning journeys and a high degree of interaction with parents, combine to ensure that each child receives individual attention in a safe, enjoyable, caring and creative environment.

Not all nurseries have nursery staff who are qualified teachers, and our pupils are very privileged to receive the care that they do. We always knew the provision to be excellent and were delighted that Estyn agreed in 2014 and graded the Nursery as “Excellent”; that’s the highest grade that can be given. Why do you call the early years the crucial years? From a child’s very first day at our school we lay the foundation for a love of learning that will remain with them throughout the course of their school life. The early years of a child’s education are ones of excitement, exploration and discovery. It is a time when they are introduced to a world beyond the secure and familiar confines of home life, when they begin to make friends, experience new play opportunities and interact with adults beyond those of their immediate family.

“ Teaching is Excellent.” Estyn 2014 30

We believe that our youngest pupils thrive on the quality learning experiences that are planned and implemented by our team of highly dedicated staff. From Nursery onwards we introduce structured learning and challenge our pupils in English and Mathematics through theme related activities, with a strong focus on developing early literacy and numeracy skills. Is the Nursery part of the Prep School? The Nursery is a self-contained, purposebuilt unit, and offers outstanding levels of care and individual attention through a theme-based Learning Programme which includes a variety of academic, music, dance and art activities. Our large, secure outdoor play area provides an environment to help children develop physical skills, whilst we extend and enhance their cognitive and social skills. Our wide curriculum encompasses not only early literacy and numeracy skills but specialist subjects such as music, art, PE, ballet and the Welsh language. Children have access to mini iPads.

“Teachers and staff share high expectations of themselves and of the children.” Estyn 2014 Nursery Teachers also go beyond the Foundation Phase and introduce more structured and formal teaching to prepare the children for the more traditional methods of teaching and learning throughout the school. The children also benefit from the facilities available across the school such as the dining hall, large open grass spaces and main halls.

“ The Nursery provides parents with very good information about their child’s progress through the year.” Estyn 2014

Isn’t a private school Nursery more expensive? The Nursery at St Clare’s offers wraparound care between 8am and 6pm at a surprisingly affordable and competitive price. Early Years Education funding is available and Childcare Vouchers are also accepted.

If you would like me to show you what makes our Nursery the best in the area, please arrange a tour of the school by contacting Holly Fowlkes, in Admissions on (01656) 789966.

“The teachers at the nursery are fantastic and always take the time to discuss our daughter’s development with us. We would recom mend the school to absolutely everyone.” Parent

Carousel has just had a makeover, with brand new signage out front. Caesars is following quickly behind, receiving its refurbishment in readiness for the spring season. To complete the fresh new image, there are also some brand new machines making their debut appearances, including the very popular Minions pusher machine!

Jamie and Lewis say they specialise in ticket payout machines offering some of the best prizes on the island. The more tickets collected, the better the prizes won. Also available is the over 18’s section that contains the latest, most modern gaming machines that have a jackpot of up to £500! This section also provides sandwiches, snacks, hot and cold drinks, all free of charge to the customers. The family are keen to help return Barry Island to the jewel in crown of South Wales’ fun holiday and day-trip destinations and, with a little luck, Carousel and Caesars Palace will be known as the best amusement arcades around.

“ There are also some brand new machines making their debut appearances.” 35

Knights is one of the longest established estate agents in Barry with over 150 years combined experience in their team. As a progressive and responsive agent, Knights have embraced the latest trends of the 21st Century with a new website and social media marketing strategy to match their great service. Carey Jones, MD tells us more.

K NIGHTS What was the reasoning behind the website re-design? Increasingly people start looking for a property online before visiting the local High Street. We wanted to create a significantly better ‘local’ online experience than they might found elsewhere on the internet.

What are the main features of the new website? We needed to create a friendly, easy to navigate search function that would showcase all of our property portfolio. It needed to be mobile friendly so visitors could examine properties on their phones, tablets and computers. We have great hints and helpful tips that may enhance your property sale; as well as information and advice that will help you decide on a suitable property and location for individuals, families and investors or developers.

Carey Jones MANAGING DIRECTOR A Chartered Surveyor who opened an Agency in High Street 34 years ago. Confident to support the professional and experienced team at Knights.

Have you joined social media? Yes! As part of our digital revamp we are now on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This allows us to promote our property portfolio, keep clients updated with new and important information, as well as sharing the latest news and updates about Knights, Barry and the Vale. Social media is providing another platform for customer service which we feel is extremely important. Will the new online features be of benefit to clients? Definitely. People can now use our website with ease, making property searches simpler and easier! We have focused on uploading every new property on to our website the moment it becomes available in our office. Every new property instruction will feature on the home page in our latest property section, prior to uploading onto the national platforms of Rightmove,

Angela Fulgoni COMMERCIAL MANAGER Dealing with the commercial and residential stock for over 30 years, Angela has an abundance of patience and has built up an excellent rapport within the community catering to the needs of all.

36

Homes on View etc. Every new property will be promoted across our social media platforms, ensuring an even greater coverage for our clients with the prospect of a quicker sale. Why should anyone check out the Knights website first? We upload all our new properties to our website first before sending to other portals. So if you’re looking for what is really fresh to market, it will be on our website first.

“ So if you’re looking for what is really fresh to market, it will be on our website first.”

Unprecidented Change In Regulation For Welsh Landlords On the 23rd November 2015 the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 came into force. The Act is intended to improve standards of letting and management practice in the private rented sector. Landlords who undertake letting or property management activities in Wales must become licensed. In order to obtain a license, a landlord must be adequately trained and also declare themselves “fit and proper”. If a landlord instructs a licensed firm of lettings agents such as Knights Lettings Limited, then the landlord merely needs his or her name and address to be registered with Rent Smart Wales.

Karen Snelson LETTINGS MANAGER Joined Knights in 1994. Advises landlords on all aspects of letting and regulation compliance. Karen is happy to provide free valuations and advice to landlords.

Knights aim to take the burden of licensing from landlords and ensure that their residential property is properly looked after in accordance with all Rent Smart Wales requirements. “At Knights we understand the new regulations and are dedicated to improving standards of letting and management practice in the private rented sector,” says Bernadette Jones. If you require any clarification or advice regarding the Act then please do not hesitate to contact Knights. You have until November 2016 to become registered with Rent Smart Wales and also to be licensed if you intend to manage residential property yourself.

Lisa Butler FINANCE & MAINTENANCE CO-ORDINATOR Joined Knights in 2002. Ensures the smooth management and running of tenanted property, ensuring repairs are effected swiftly.

Nina Chivers, of Nina’s Estate Agents, Barry is setting the estate agency world alight. Vale Life surveys the situation to find out why it is one of the leading agencies of choice.

NINA ESTATE AGENTS

Nina, please remind us when Nina’s Estate Agents was established? We set up Nina’s Estate Agents back in 2005. How has business been for you? Incredible! We celebrated eleven years this January and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. We have survived a massive recession where, unfortunately, other businesses have fallen by the wayside and emerged stronger than ever. Tell us about your team I am the Director of the company and a qualified valuer. I have a team of six on the sales side including Rob, Pauline, Diane, Kirsty, Jac and Rhian. On the lettings side there’s Rob (Parker), Katherine, Jacqui and Adam our inhouse financial adviser. Stop a moment, did you say lettings? Yes, we opened a lettings side of the business back in 2007. This is in a separate building just a few doors up.

This is a fully managed/tenant find service for landlords, offering free valuations, marketing of their property on our website and all major portals, accompanied viewings, vetting of tenants, preparation of tenancy agreement and property management. We are up-to-date with all of the latest legislations and are an Accredited Agency and Members of the TDS Bond Dispute Scheme. What makes Nina’s Estate Agency special? Undoubtedly it’s my 26 years’ experience and our highly trained staff who are bursting with energy and enthusiasm. Our clients tell us that our friendly, family-oriented approach keeps them coming back time after time. As we’ve worked together for so long, we have helped each other through life’s ups and downs.

We appreciate that buying a house can be very daunting. We have clients who have never moved, are moving because of divorce or other personal circumstances and some who’ve moved six times! Ours is a very personal one-toone service. We take our clients through every step of the process. We are also sought out by investors looking to buy properties in the Vale of Glamorgan area. Knowing that we’re offering great service to our customers is what keeps us developing the business and continually improving what we do. How do you see the next five years? We have been asked to reach out into different areas from people living in, or wanting to live in Penarth, Dinas Powys and Sully. We would love to do this and would welcome any interest from sellers, buyers and landlords.

“Our clients tell us that our friendly, family-oriented approach keeps them coming back time after time.” 42

On a personal level, do you live locally? Yes, we do. We also like to support local businesses and eat out and shop locally too. Do you support any local charities? We get involved with local charities and fundraising and are proud to be a sponsor of World Featherweight Champion, Lee Selby, and have done so from his unknown fights to his rise to the top. We also sponsor Ysgol St Curig girls football team.

Room Designs has been established for seven years carrying out contract work, but mother and daughter team, Meryl and Jodie, after many requests by customers, have opened a showroom in Park Crescent, Barry. Opened last October, this creative couple have been overwhelmed by the positive response. We chat to Jodie to find out more.

ROOM DESIGNS Why did you choose Barry to open Room Designs? We felt that there was nothing similar to what we are offering in the area and, since we’ve opened, and the feedback we’ve had, we realise that there has obviously been a need for a showroom like ours for a long time.

What roles does each of you play in running Room Designs? My role is to run the showroom, call out to customers homes to give them inspiration and a quotation, to maintain the website and overlook everything. Sarah is our showroom assistant and she helps maintain the showroom along with customers’ orders. My mother concentrates more on the contract side, along with Theodore our French designer. They deal with big refurbishments for hotels, hospitals, nursing homes and outdoor centres. They have been very successful. What services do you offer? We offer a free call out service where we will go to a customer’s home to measure up, give them some inspiration and ideas. They are also welcome to come to our showroom to look at our large range of fabrics and then send them a free no-obligation quotation. Who are your customers? We cater for everyone. No day is the same. A customer may just want to buy a candle or some bedding, or they may want us to design their whole home. We sell bedding, wallpaper, beds, headboards, lighting, carpet, flooring, curtains, cushions, all types of blinds (roller blinds, roman blinds, vertical blinds), mirrors, lamps, rugs, pictures, plaques, furniture, candles. We have also started stocking a new children’s range that includes some bedroom furniture, mini sofas and chair, toys, cot and bed covers and accessories, and organic 100% cotton clothing.

You can find these items and much more on our website or in store. What areas do you cover? We cover the whole of the Vale of Glamorgan area and also travel further afield, depending on what the customer needs. We also offer a service where we could skype or facetime customers who don’t live locally. What experience do you both have in the industry? My mother has 20 years experience in the industry and I have eight. Our French designer Theo has six years’ experience in the interior designs industry and has a degree in Interior Design. What brands of curtains and carpets do you offer? We are proud of our brand and are constantly searching to find new and exciting brands to add to our repertoire. We currently offer Prestigious, Kai, Ashley Wilde, Robert Allen, iLiv, Kylie Minogue bedding, Lily Flame fragrances. We have recently started stocking the Harrogate candle company aromatherapy candles. 44

What do you believe makes Room Designs different from other interior design companies? We’re not greedy. We pride ourselves on our competitive prices. We also like to give back to our customers, so we often run competitions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, giving away candles, plaques and other items. We also run a Recommend A Friend scheme - should a customer recommend a friend who makes a purchase of curtains, blinds, wallpaper or carpets/flooring; we will send them out a gift voucher to use in shop. We also offer payment plans (subject to terms) customers can put a deposit down on bedding and selected items in store and pay over one month. We also offer a free call out service, which not a lot of other interior design companies do.

“ We offer a free call out service where we will go to a customer’s home to measure up.”

We like to get to know our customers and their preferences and, visiting them at their home, means we can give them our professional advice and get a feel for their tastes. We are also getting known for the unique and unusual items we stock. We like to be different and we feel we have different items to other businesses in our area.

“ My mother has 20 years experience in the industry and I have eight.”

You’re running a competition, please tell us about that? We are running a competition for a child who would love a bedroom makeover but is struggling in some sort of way. We are asking people to write to us at 42 Park Crescent, Barry, CF62 6HE, or email us at sales.roomdesigns@gmail.com to enter a child into our competition explaining why they think this child should win the bedroom makeover. We’ll give the selected entries to our independent judging panel who will decide the winner.

The prize will be a bedroom makeover worth £1,000, which will include wallpaper, carpet, blinds/curtains, bedding and accessories. Our competition will start in March and the winner will be chosen in June. We will then arrange a date for the makeover to be completed by August 2016. We want to help someone who really deserves it and would really make their life a little bit happier. We all genuinely love what we do here and if we can make a difference to someone’s life in our small way, then that’s very rewarding. A conservatory is a wonderful way to enhance your home. It gives the homeowner an extra room, connecting the inside with the outside and allows you to enjoy your garden to the maximum. But what generally happens is that you can’t sit in them during the hot summer months because it’s too hot and, in the winter months, it can be too cold. Future Ideal Homes offers a solution with their tile effect replacement roof system. Vale Life lifts the lid…

FUTURE IDEAL HOMES Work in progress

Future Ideal Homes Ltd has over 30 years’ experience in the installation and building of conservatories, orangeries, windows, doors and conservatory replacement roofs systems. This family run business is owned by husband and wife Craig and Dina Harewood. Jeff Barcello joined the team six months ago as Technical Advisor. Being based in the Vale of Glamorgan, they have experience working on properties that have heritage values and specific requirements set by the local authority for all types of conservation buildings, ensuring that the traditional style and appearance is not lost but maintained whilst delivering high thermal performance. Please tell us about Future Ideal Homes? We only deliver the highest standard of workmanship and products, and to ensure we maintain this level of workmanship, all staff are fully trained and qualified in their own area of expertise and have met the minimum technical competency required by Building Standards Regulations.

This is all supported by a 10 year insurance backed guarantee and, as we are members of Network Veka and also Trustmark Registered, all work is guaranteed through a government backed scheme. All products supplied come with a European CE Mark and Energy Rating Certificate compulsory for many products. Tell us about your conservatories and replacement tiled roof system? A traditional conservatory roof whether it is Polycarbonate or Glass can mean the beautiful new addition to your home is too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. We are told that extremes of weather are likely to become more frequent, so it’s more important than ever to make sure any addition to your home can withstand the most severe conditions. At Future Ideal Homes Ltd we have been supplying and installing tile effect roof systems for several years to both new conservatories and replacing the roof of existing conservatories. By choosing a tile effect roof, you will get all the benefits of the extra space a conservatory offers with none of the downsides. 46

What’s more, because it has all the looks of a traditional extension, it will be a seamless addition to your home. It’s also the ideal way to transform tired, old conservatory roofs. Plastered or tongue and groove ceiling options allow you to create the ideal living space for your home. You can even incorporate down lighters and roof windows. Whatever you want out of your living space our Tile Effect Roof Systems help create your own personal sanctuary. The Tile effect roof can be easily fitted to any model and provides exceptional energy efficiency - saving money on heating bills thanks to U-values as low as 0.15. No weather noise or glare from the roof space just fantastic looks both inside and out. Our roof offers the choice of both tile and fascia colours along with the option of roof lights for those who require added light and ventilation. We offer a 10 year insurance backed guarantee for peace of mind and the tiles also carry a BBA certification and a guarantee for up to 50 years.

“We only deliver the highest standard of workmanship.”

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

Why choose Future Ideal Homes? Mr. and Mrs John and Deena Barton of Barry tell us why they chose Future Ideal Homes to transform their conservatory. How did you hear about FIH? Our son-in-law, who lives eight doors away knew Craig and when he needed a new front door, he chose to work with his company so suggested Craig take a look at our conservatory. Why did you work with FIH? We have lived in our property for 19 years this July. The conservatory wasn’t being used to its best. John used it to watch his beloved football but it was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. We weren’t making the best of it. What did FIH do? They removed the roof, plaster-boarded it, put in insulation, marine ply, roofing felt and tiled it. As we have a log burner, they had to make sure that this was incorporated.

How long did it take? We had it done in December so the weather wasn’t great. We were concerned as the roof was exposed and, as the conservatory and the kitchen were open plan, we were worried about security and safety. Craig and Jeff assured us that all the main work would be done in a day and they were right. They were prompt, clean and tidy. What we most liked about using a local company is that we built up a close friendship with them. If we had a query, they were there for us. Nothing was too much trouble. How has it changed the way you live? John still uses it to watch the football but we can now enjoy it together with a coffee (or a glass of wine!). Our dog Dylan loves it too. It was an investment but we feel it was well worth it. Would you recommend FIH to friends? We already have! A few of our friends have come to the house to look at it and were very impressed. We have been so impressed with the work that we’ve now worked with them to replace our upstairs windows as well. 47

Choosing the right solicitor and deciding which one to use can be a daunting experience, especially when there are so many to choose. We chat to one of the Directors at Hopkins Law, Cowbridge, Liane Farthing to find out more.

HOPKINS L AW

Please tell us about your role at Hopkins Law? I have been practising law for almost thirty years - working for large organisations such as Principality Building Society and Eversheds and, latterly other firms in Cardiff, always acting in Property matters. I have been at Hopkins Law since 2007 when I was appointed a Partner to establish a property arm for the practice. Up until then it had been, predominantly, a family law practice. Over four years ago my fellow Director Kerry Mordey and myself had the opportunity to take over the practice. Since then, I have managed Hopkins Law. I also still have my own property case load and supervise other members of the property and private client team. This may sound like a challenge and, at times, it is but I find my role very rewarding. How long has Hopkins Law been established? The Practice was established in Cowbridge in 2006 and has grown to three offices, in Cowbridge, Cardiff and London since then.

There have been many changes over the past ten years including mergers, a buyout, move of offices and the expansion of services we offer our clients. We are planning to expand along the M4 corridor - we don’t stand still. How many other team members are there and what roles do they play? My fellow Director, and joint owner, Kerry Mordey, heads the family side of the practice which deals with divorce, separation, finance, children, child care and pre-nuptial agreements to name a few! I manage the remainder which covers property, both residential and commercial and the private client department. We have seven solicitors and two senior conveyancers in the property and private client department which enables us to offer an extensive range of expertise and experience. In addition to our property lawyers we have recently appointed Mrs Lynn Wheeldon in our private client department. Lynn joined us from Hugh James Solicitors having previously been a partner and latterly a consultant with them. Lynn has extensive experience in private client matters; from Wills and Probate and Powers of Attorney to complex Trusts. 48

Our property team in Cowbridge comprise Lisa Lake, Kelly Lewis, Nigel Perris, Norman Saye, Keri Jones and myself. In addition, we have a team of property and private client solicitors at our Cardiff office. We are very proud that Hopkins Law is enjoying its third year of accreditation with the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme; a quality standard for solicitors who achieve consistently high levels of service and advice in residential conveyancing work. Additionally, we are the only firm of solicitors in Wales, acting for borrowers, who are members of the Equity Release Council. I have years of experience in this specialised area of law, having acted for one of the country’s leading equity release lenders for many years and, latterly, acting for borrowers often referred from local and national Independent Financial Advisers.

“Our aim is to obtain a genuine understand- ing of our clients’ requirements.”

“We operate on both a local, regional, national and international level. We look after clients from all over England and Wales and have several clients who are resident abroad.”

What services does Hopkins Law offer? Our aim is to obtain a genuine understanding of our clients’ requirements and to provide an integrated and personal approach to clients in relation to their individual and business needs. We specialise in property - both commercial and residential, equity release, family law and private client which includes wills, probate and powers of attorney. In addition, Norman Saye, at our Cowbridge office, is also able to provide his breadth of experience in those areas together with contested wills and probate, landlord and tenant, land and property disputes, Inheritance Act claims by dependents, and County Court litigation generally involving a wide range of disputes. What geographical areas do you cover? We operate on both a local, regional, national and international level. We look after clients from all over England and Wales and have several clients who are resident abroad.

What makes Hopkins Law different? We strive to recruit the best talent and, as a result, we have a team of resourceful, determined and likeminded professionals and support staff at each of our offices who are committed to providing exemplary, caring and professional legal services to all of our clients. Those values held by all of us at Hopkins Law are amply demonstrated by the feedback and glowing testimonials from our clients. W H A T C L I E N T S S AY “I wanted to thank you personally for helping with this matter, it helped to know someone I trust was dealing with this during a particularly stressful time for me.”

“I would like to say a big thank you for your service and making it very stressfree! I would have no hesitation in recommending yourself and Hopkins Law and will be back to your firm in the future.” “Thank you very much - you have been great throughout. I have very much appreciated your efficiency, attention to detail and pleasant and understanding manner.” 49

For those of you lucky enough to be clients of Ustu, Porthcawl, you will no doubt have chosen the salon for the team’s exceptional cutting, colouring and styling. This spring co-owner Wayne Keene wanted to showcase the talents of senior stylist Tara, who has been with the salon for fourteen years and the make-up artistry of in-house beauty therapist Jodie Donovan.

USTU’S SPRINGTIME FANTASY The theme Wayne tasked the team with was Springtime Fantasy. Tara and Jodie even made all of the flowers and butterflies. I think you would agree that they captured his vision perfectly. Obviously this is a photoshoot for Vale Life but it does show the talent that the Ustu team possess. Owners Wayne and Paul are already working on their theme for the summer issue. Whose turn will it be next we wonder?

Every day we are constantly bombarded with adverts for quick fixes to our health concerns; whether they are tablets that have been ‘clinically proven’, shakes with an entire day’s worth of nutrients in them, or intense diets that ensure you starve yourself.

These rarely work, despite our best efforts - but what if there was a place that could actually give you an instant result? That could help you in a positive way towards your health goals? Now that would definitely be a place that you might wish to check out. Instant Result Clinic is not just another weight loss centre that promises the world but leaves you with nothing. By shifting the focus away from the ‘miracle cures’ found in such places IRC helps you towards your goal by achieving a positive lifestyle change through diet plans and food monitoring.

This family run business takes extra care of its clientele, making you feel a part of the family rather than just a singular cycle of an in and out business model. IRC say, “Specialising in the reduction of the three main health and aesthetic worries - cellulite, stretch marks and localised fat stores (love handles, tummy rolls etc.), we have been seeing really positive results with many clients, even after a person’s first session. With a few other treatments available - botox and fillers, and the addition of tattoo removal coming soon, Instant Result Clinic helps you reach your goal the correct way.”

Any business can only be great with good staff. Blu Hair Design in Penarth has rightly earned its fantastic reputation thanks to the quality of staff working there. Stephanie Henley has been with the salon for 5 years. As well as being sought after for her cutting and colouring skills, did you know she also has a passion for competitions, fashion shows and photoshoots. Vale Life delves deeper… Our colour experts in Balayage are Leanne, Stephanie and Molly. They have a huge following on Instagram, bringing custom from all over Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, which indirectly benefits local businesses in Penarth.

BLU HAIR DESIGN Why are you so passionate about this side of the business? I have always been interested in the creative side of hairdressing; the competitions, fashion shows and photoshoots. It is an unique side to hairdressing where anything goes. Your creative side comes out as you are creating magic on the hair. I started competing about four years ago to gain experience - then, through the competitions, I got to know and meet different and creative stylists in the industry. It opened the door to many things I could only dream of. I started doing my first hair show with the NHF Welsh Artistic Team. I’ve been working with them for two years now and we present our work in the Welsh Hairdressing Awards. The buzz of just working backstage is awesome! Then I thought to myself this isn’t enough, so I started contacting other creative people and pulled together a photoshoot for my portfolio which was called “The Queen of Hearts”. I then got asked to do a photoshoot with a designer in London to showcase her collection, which was an inspired princess shoot.

My most recent photoshoot was also in London for a photographer for his Asian travel shoot which was captured on the tube. The whole adrenalin of the day was insane. I would travel anywhere just to be involved in a photoshoot or runway show just to be part of it. I love the rush and the passion. Please tell us more about Blu… Salon owners Alexis and Hayley continue to research and offer the best products, treatments and services on offer and bring them to Blu. A popular one is Couture Colour, which is an exclusive personal service to each individual client. Alexis and Hayley say, “Our Couture Colour Service is so elite with the consultation being the key to the Balayage success in our salon. For those of you who haven’t heard of Balayage it gives hair depth, natural colour and current condition; it’s a perfect bespoke hair colour; it accentuates features and compliments skin tone - showing personality and it’s a freehand treatment using colour ID which offers very natural looking colour with less noticeable regrowth and is easy to follow-up.” 52

Are there any other services you’d like to share with readers? What’s popular at the moment? Another service new to the salon, and to Penarth I believe, is Olaplex; which is added to colour to prevent hair damage. Hair bonds are broken during thermal, mechanical and chemical services but Olaplex reconnects broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair, making hair stronger, healthier and the colour will last longer. Olaplex enables you to lighten hair that would normally risk damage. It has been tested on virtually every hair type and it works: Asian, Caucasian, and African American - even previously chemically processed and virgin (never before coloured) all respond to Olaplex. There is no build up so it doesn’t make hair difficult to colour or lighten after several uses. Hair just simply keeps getting better. Tested by top celebrity colourists who have everything to lose, Olaplex has been tried on thousands of clients, multiple times for over a year. Not one single report of anything negative. Olaplex is a favourite with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow. Show your hair some love and give Blu Hair Design a call today.

Scott Wroe Hearing Centre is a truly independent, family run business. This year they are celebrating fifteen years in Penarth with the opening of their new hearing centre. We caught up with Scott Wroe to find out more.

HEAR HEAR

Why the move to Royal Buildings? It has always been our aim to improve the facilities for our clients in the Penarth practice. For the last four months we have had our specialist shop fitters building the new hearing centre.

We also have a dedicated testing room with a full 55 inch wall-mounted display screen enabling us to explain hearing loss in more detail, and show how the new technology could benefit our clients.

What does the new practice offer? The new practice has the very latest testing and fitting equipment by world leading audiological equipment specialists Interacoustics. The new equipment will allow us to provide a more in depth hearing test and will now include QuickSin testing which allows us to find out our client’s particular ability to hear speech in noise, helping us to make specific treatment recommendations.

To go alongside the new testing and fitting suite we have our dedicated Micro Suction ear wax removal room with ENT chair and binaural microscope. Micro Suction wax removal is the preferred method by medical practitioners for safe and pain free ear wax removal, with the added benefit that olive oil softening is only needed 48 hours prior to the appointment and, in some cases, ear wax can be removed on the same day.

“ The new practice has the very latest testing and fitting equipment by world leading audiological equipment specialists Interacoustics.”

“ We are proud to be a 5 Star Centre for Phonak.” What is the importance of being independent? Unlike many practices, being wholly independent means that we can offer advice on all leading makes and models, not just the ones that financially support the practice. We are proud to be a 5 Star Centre for Phonak, a Widex Centre of Excellence and a Gold Centre for Oticon - the leading brand names in hearing aids. Being independent also means that we can be more in touch with our clients and can offer the highest levels of service and aftercare.

Established since 1999, Timba Hair has expanded and moved to larger premises next door to their original salon. We stopped by for a lovely chat with Salon Manager Julie Williams, described by owners Richard and Rhiannon as the ‘heartbeat of the business’…

TIMBA H AIR & BEAUTY

Just a few of the team who take care of you at Timba

Julie, we love your new premises please tell us what you’ve been up to since we last saw you? Well, as you’ve mentioned we’ve recently moved our salon next door! Our original premises served us well but we felt restricted in the opportunities to develop the salon in the ways we wanted. We’ve now been able to create three separate cutting and colour zones and managed to make this larger space feel comfortable, relaxing and personal without losing the friendly atmosphere our clients love. The ‘White’ room can be used as a VIP area and is perfect for bridal parties looking for a special experience – you even get to choose your own personal music playlist to listen to while we make your big day begin perfectly. We have also expanded our beauty area and services, so we can now look after you from head to toe. From professional make-up to HD Brows, LVL lashes, nails and luxury spray tans in our purpose built tanning room.

What product range do you use here at your salon? We use Goldwell and KMS professional products, as we believe our clients deserve the very best in salon and at home. We have a KMS ambassador working in salon so we can advise on the most suitable products for each individual client, making sure we look after their hair when we can’t be there with them. We’re stockists of the new premium Kerasilk treatment range, which we promise will make you fall in love with your hair! Our team are trained to give a bespoke, tension-busting head massage which enhances the effect of the experience. The treatment itself will leave your hair feeling beautifully conditioned for up to ten washes - all of our team have had it done and can’t believe the difference. And we understand that you’re renowned for your hair colouring... We love colour, it’s what really inspires us. We have team members who’ve 56

gained the prestigious Goldwell Colour Expert qualification making them leaders in colour knowledge. This is an intensive six week course which gives our team incredible colour knowledge and sets us apart from the rest. To encourage their creativity and skills, we decided we needed a special area in the salon to highlight the importance of colour. Richard was inspired by his wife Rhiannon (who is a scientist in Cancer research) to create the UK’s very first Colour Lab within the salon where customers can look in and watch the magic happen. We are very proud of the colour work we carry out and love to show it off. The positive feedback we’ve received about our fantastic team and new salon has been extremely satisfying and makes us very proud to be a part of Timba Hair & Beauty.

So, with the addition of the colour Lab, two beauty rooms, nail bar and designated spray tan room, Timba’s expert colour and style team are ticking all the boxes when it comes to being a 5 star salon – without you having to pay city centre prices. And if you’re driving to your appointment – they have free parking right outside the salon.

The Spa at Penarth’s five star boutique hotel Holm House is unique. Visitors love its personal, homely and friendly atmosphere. Vale Life takes time out for a relaxing chat with Jodie Souto, Spa and Leisure Manager.

What is your role at Holm House? I am the Spa and Leisure Manager at Holm House. I have recently taken on the role of Assistant General Manager of the Hotel which I am thoroughly enjoying.

FIVE STAR SPA

When did you join the Team? I joined Holm House in October 2014, just before the hotel opened. I am delighted to be part of the original team that set up this beautiful hotel and spa It was a very exciting project and it has been so rewarding to see how the business has grown over its first year. How many staff are employed at the Spa? I employed two fantastic and talented spa therapists, Abigail Beynon and Kate Matthews, when the hotel first opened both are still with us. Their enthusiasm and professionalism has helped to make the spa such a special and unique place. Over the last year the spa has become so popular that we now have another three experienced and talented spa therapists with us. I’m delighted to say they are all very proud to be part of the Holm House family. What does the Spa offer? I take it it’s not just typical spa treatments? Considering we are a small spa in a boutique hotel, we offer quite a wide range of services; from luxury individual treatments, packages and beauty treatments. We also have a small hydro-swimming pool, a steam room; a relaxation room with terrace, and a gym. We offer a membership at Holm House which includes full use of all our facilities. Daily, weekly and monthly guest passes are also available. As a trained Sports Therapist (BSc) and Personal Trainer, I have already built an extended client base at Holm House Spa, where I provide diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation; including gym and water-based exercises.

“ We always have wonderful seasonal spa packages and special calendar events.”

I also provide sports massage, nutrition and personal training. Sports Massage has been very popular with the locals and I’m now known for having ‘magic healing hands’! The gym is a perfect place for one-to-one sessions with clients, it’s a very personal space and the clients who have been training with me have achieved excellent results. Why do you think clients come to Holm House Spa? We’re the complete opposite to a large health club and I believe that’s why guests enjoy coming here. It’s homely, personal and always has a friendly atmosphere. We have a very bespoke product range (La Sultane de Saba), Holm House Spa is, in fact, the first spa in Wales to use this exclusive brand and is one of the reasons why our menu is so appealing and enticing to guests. The setting is also stunning. It is a one-stop place where you can enjoy anything from the spa menu, a nail 58

appointment with our nail technician, a quick wax, or a dip in the pool, followed by a glass of champagne and lazy afternoon in the relaxation room. Are customers mainly local? Holm House Spa is very popular with the lovely local people of Penarth. Hotel guests that live abroad or a distance away are always pleasantly surprised to find our spa facilities and services on arrival. They can’t wait to spend their stay being pampered and relaxing. Our Cardiff and Vale guests really enjoy a spa day, and the seasonal packages we offer. They come to ‘The Garden by the Sea’ (Penarth) to escape from everyday life and to take in the breathtaking views of the Bristol Channel and Somerset beyond from the relaxation area. Many guests have said that on a sunny day with the view from the terrace ‘you could be anywhere in the world’.

As the spa/gym is based in a five star hotel, does that make it expensive? I think that many people may have the perception that a boutique hotel and spa will be expensive. However, at Holm House, we are actually very competitive in every area of the business, and our services and packages offer fantastic quality and value for money. Our hotel overnight stay and spa packages are very reasonable and extremely popular; it gives guests the opportunity to sample all areas of the hotel even if they are staying for just one night. We always have wonderful seasonal spa packages and special calendar events organised - Valentine’s Day weekend was a great success; the overnight stay and spa and spa day packages were fully booked weeks in advance - lots of guests commented that the packages were excellent and the service they received made their weekend very special.

What do you enjoy about your role? I enjoy how no day is ever the same at Holm House, especially as I work across the spa and the hotel itself. I take great pride in my role as I am so passionate about Holm House - I have believed in the hotels ethos since the day I saw Holm House, when it was empty and boarded up in August 2014. From carrying out spa treatments to sports massage, rehabilitation to personal training - which are all very ‘hands-on’ - then to being a manager, overseeing the spa facility and staff; to day-to-day activities and running of the hotel and bedrooms - the staff always make a joke, I change my outfits about four times a day to suit my different roles! I think one of the reasons why I love my role is because I am able to get to know our guests. It gives me great pleasure to see our guests enjoying themselves when spending 59

their time at Holm House, especially when I see them leaving with a spring in their step, having been completely revitalised!

The Bhagotra family have owned Court Colman Manor since 1999. Vijay Bhagotra and his wife, Isabelle, managed the hotel until Vijay passed away in 2009. That’s when Sanjeev stepped in to continue his father’s vision.

COURT COLMAN M ANOR

What is the background of the Manor? Parts of Court Colman Manor date back to 1766, making 2016 her 250th Birthday! She has been the home for a succession of people who have guarded their privacy well but its history, to the best of our knowledge, is available in the history section of our website. Who is the current owner? I am the owner and Managing Director. I’m from Penarth but now live in Troes. I am involved in all aspects of the hotel, the face behind much of the interior design of the Manor and the instigator of the improvements recently completed. How many weddings do you cater for per year? We are very lucky to host more and more weddings year on year. In 2015, we had 85 weddings and we currently have 95 weddings booked for 2016, with more bookings still coming in. With packages available throughout the year, we are seeing more and more winter weddings, but we still have a strong demand for summer weddings.

Do you have a wedding co-ordinator and, if so, what is her name? Hannah Perry is the Wedding Co-ordinator at Court Colman Manor, working full-time on weddings and events. Do your couples have exclusive use of the Manor? Couples have exclusive use of the Manor on their big day. We feel that it is right to host one wedding at a time and understand that it is also what our brides and grooms expect from their wedding venue. Do you offer catering services? We do. We provide a range of menus for the wedding breakfast and a variety of buffets including hog roast, fish and chip cones, hot fork buffets and rustic buffets. We are proud to say that we use seasonal fruits and vegetables and local meats and dairy products throughout the hotel and our on-site, award-winning Indian restaurant, Bokhara Brasserie. Can you recommend suppliers? We can recommend all sorts of services and suppliers to our brides and grooms; from venue dressers to photographers, cake makers, bridal shops, musicians, wedding cars, florists… just ask. 62

What refurbishment work has taken place and to which areas? We are always looking to improve the Manor but the recent works have really excited both the customers and the staff. The Garden Room was looking a little tired and in need of some love. This function room is named the ‘Garden Room’ and features original floor-toceiling windows along its two exterior walls, which look out over the six acres of landscaped grounds here at the Manor. We wanted to embrace the strong tie the room has to the natural beauty outdoors, while still offering a bright and airy, functional space for brides and grooms to use during their wedding day. We had a suspended ceiling installed with beautiful new lighting to create a lovely ambience, featuring bird cage lighting, spotlights and the focal points, which are three large, modern chandeliers, nestled amongst foliage. The floor was replaced and the walls painted, with one wall featuring a ‘wall of leaves’. The new bar is the real focal point of the room, and is at its best when serving drinks by night - lit up in all its glory.

“ Court Colman Manor is perfect for making your dreams a reality.”

The room can hold 80 guests comfortably for a wedding breakfast, and is also licenced for wedding ceremonies. The Honeymoon Suite is another new delight for Court Colman brides and grooms. The room features a fabulous double jacuzzi bath set in the bedroom, in front a window that looks across miles and miles of countryside views. We are very lucky to be situated in such an idyllic location, with far reaching views from all the 30 rooms here at the Manor, but we wanted the Honeymoon Suite to really take advantage of our location. The idea is that after months of stressful seating plans and dress fittings, the bride and groom can unwind with a bottle of bubbly in the jacuzzi taking in the beauty that surrounds their wedding venue. The rest of the bedroom is opulently decorated, with one-off, custom-made furniture and a gloriously comfortable bed. The adjoining en-suite shower room is a treat in itself, with double showers and his and hers sinks.

How much money has been spent on the refurbishment? The total cost of refurbishment of the Garden Room and Honeymoon Suite is around £100,000 which we, and our guests, believe is money well spent. What makes Court Colman special as a wedding venue? Court Colman Manor is perfect for making your dreams a reality. With six acres of landscaped gardens, which feature a natural waterfall, rose walk and fish pond, guests can make the most of the tranquil, countryside location with drinks and canapés on the terrace (with exclusive use). The Manor herself is a Georgian Grade II-listed beacon with her bright-white facade glowing against the surrounding greenery. She boasts four different rooms that are licenced for wedding ceremonies of different sizes from four to 120 persons. Our fabulous wedding breakfast menus ensure no guest goes hungry, and menus and buffets can be tweaked to ensure every dietary requirement is catered for.

“ Parts of Court Colman Manor date back to 1766, making 2016 her 250th Birthday!” 63

Our passionate and dedicated wedding co-ordinator, Hannah, is on hand from your first viewing of the Manor to the last round of drinks at the end of the night. Once it comes to coats and carriages at the end of the party, guests who’d prefer to stay a little longer can rest assured that they will have a great night’s sleep in our range of bedroom types, which total 30 bedrooms in all. Six of the bedrooms have themes and are inspired by faraway lands, each of which offers a jacuzzi bath for ultimate relaxation. We are delighted to welcome guests to experience the delights that Court Colman Manor has to offer. TESTIMONIAL

Caroline Hodges of Cardiff shares her experience Until I was invited to review the brand new, tailor-made DECLÉOR Aromatherapy Escape Face Back and Scalp Treatment at The St David’s Hotel & Spa, my experience of spas was fairly limited to saunas and steam rooms. At age 23, I’d never had a ‘proper’ spa treatment so, of course, I jumped at the opportunity to experience one of the new treatments. It wasn’t just the chance to have a facial at a five star hotel that attracted me. Although a spa treatment novice, as a skin care fanatic I’d heard fantastic things about DECLÉOR and their unique, pioneering aromatherapy treatments.

As soon as I arrived I was greeted by my therapist, who asked me some questions about my skin to determine which of the balms and treatments my skin type needed. The treatment began with a shoulder to foot massage, with a concentration on my back to help relieve stress. Of the three available balms, Slim, Sculpt and Relax, I chose the Relax balm, which had a sweet vanilla scent. My therapist began the facial by cleansing my face of make-up and impurities. She then worked through the facial routine, which has been designed exclusively for The St David’s Hotel, which included exfoliation, Neroli aromessence balm and aroma pressures massage to help push the products into the dermis. 65

She then applied a hydrating mask to help replenish my skin while she continued the treatment with a relaxing scalp massage. To finish the treatment, she applied a moisturiser and eye cream. After the treatment, my therapist talked me through the various products she had used and why, and recommended other products that she felt my skin needed. All in all, top marks for relaxation, I will definitely be working DECLÉOR into my skincare routine. We’ve come along to The Fountain in Aberkenfig to wish owner Justin Rees a happy 1st anniversary - and not just because we’ve heard he’s installed a brand new Fracino coffee machine, and a new menu, honest…

THE FOUNTAIN

Justin, your first anniversary since taking over The Fountain is approaching - congratulations on that. We’ve also heard that you have a new Chef who’s recently joined your team; can you tell us a bit more about him? Yes, Liam Turner trained at Bridgend College and passed with flying colours. He’s a young, very talented, up and coming chef who’s building a great reputation here. Liam works with me in our restaurants and also our outside catering events - and, like me, Liam shares the same vision and enthusiasm to take the business forward over the coming years. Can we also mention that if there are any pastry chefs reading this, give us a shout as we’ll be looking to recruit a pastry chef in the very near future.

“ Our traditional style carvery is served every Wednesday and Sunday.”

That sounds good, and how are your special events and themed evenings going? We recently held our first Spanish evening serving Paella, Tapas and Sangria. This was very well attended and we’ve already had requests for another similar event. Upcoming events… We will have an Easter Weekend Extravaganza - where we’ll be cooking a whole Spring Lamb covered in herbs and spices - it’ll be spit roast along with fresh fish and a BBQ. We have a New Zealand Maori Night planned for April, plus plenty more to follow so watch this space as they say. Our afternoon teas are now served every afternoon except Sundays. The cakes for these are made to order and freshly prepared onsite (We can vouch that they’re delicious! Vale Life). 66

Plus, as we speak, we’re putting the finishing touches to our mobile kitchen which will be situated in The Fountain car park and serving breakfast rolls, pulled pork, chilli dogs etc. This will be up and running from the first week in April. Can you tell us about your Care in the Community programme? We offer free delivery on Carvery dinners on Sundays and Wednesdays this service is aimed at those in the local community who are unable to travel to the restaurant due to not having transport - they may be elderly or disabled. In fact, we delivered over 200 Christmas Dinners direct to customers’ homes on Christmas Eve. Also, once a month we transform the local Cefn Cribwr Athletic Club into a restaurant serving a traditional Sunday Carvery to the local residents - this is also very popular.

Customers need to book in advance for this to avoid disappointment they can book direct with the club on 01656 740029. And do you serve your own carvery here at The Fountain? Yes, our traditional style carvery is served every Wednesday and Sunday 12pm until 8pm. Again, this is very popular and we do recommend that customers in advance - this can be done via phone, our Facebook page or via our website.

We believe it’s the combination of good cooking, great service and affordable pricing that makes the food at The Fountain so popular, along with the secret ingredients of special herbs and spices that Justin imports from his mother who lives in Spain. So, if your mouth’s watering right now we suggest you book soon, and remember to tell them we sent you!

Wow, it seems your feet haven’t touched the ground over the last year Justin. How is your outside catering business, Just Hoglicious, doing? It’s brilliant thanks, going from strength to strength. We now have three hog roasting units and our diary is filling up nicely with weddings, private parties, and functions for 2016 and beyond.

Over the last decade the classic tea room has had a tough time, bashed aside by corporate, chain coffee shops. But there are beautiful little gems that continue to keep the wonderful tradition of the tea room alive. Vale Life found a great example in Bridgend.

HOLLY DOLLY’S

Don’t people miss sitting down in a comfortable atmosphere with a delicious range of drinks and treats? Don’t they miss not having to rush their drink because there is a queue of grumpy office workers behind them? With each passing day, more and more people are realising that they don’t have to partake in, what has now sadly become, the ‘standard’ way of caffeinating oneself. The ‘enlightened’ are avoiding the high street chains and seeking out a perhaps more civilised offering.

Serving traditional afternoon teas, a delicious range of healthy eating options and, naturally, some truly mouth-watering cakes. Full of pleasant surprises, Dolly’s Tea Room has a stylishly decorated second floor that is available to hire - perfect for birthdays, showers, and children’s parties, this vintage styled area is bound to make your event or party extra special.

Since Dolly’s opened a year ago, this quaint tea room has continued to cause quite a stir amongst the local community. With engaging staff that are incredibly passionate, Dolly’s Tea Room is the perfect reminder of how coffee houses and tea rooms should be and just goes to show what we many of us have been missing.

Beyond The Border, one of the Worlds leading storytelling festivals returns to St. Donats Castle, near Llantwit Major, from 1-3 July this year, offering not only storytelling but poetry, music singing, theatre, circus, puppets, a kidzone, films and much more.

A BOVE & BEYOND

Beyond the Border is a wonderful and vibrant three-day festival of stories and music from Wales, and across the world, that will take place this year from 1-3 July. What better place to share tales of myths and legends from across the world than the magical, fairy tale setting of St Donats Castle, overlooking the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast. This setting is inspiring with vast, picturesque grounds and stunning sea views. This summer Beyond The Border will deliver a feast of stories and entertainment to audiences from across the globe in and around brightly coloured tents in the grounds of this glorious medieval castle. Beyond The Border, the leading international festival of storytelling in the UK, was founded at St Donats Arts Centre in 1993.

Over the years the company has successfully focused on creating, encouraging and promoting traditional storytelling for contemporary audiences. In 2016, its 22nd year, Beyond The Border explores a variety of themes; audiences can discover epic storytelling from India, blacksmith stories from around the world, Celtic myth from Wales and Ireland, tales of transformation for adults, fairy tales for children and tales of wonder for all. Storytelling and music takes place from dawn until dusk across nine different stages with over a hundred performances. This year also offers a rich programme of activities for young people and their families and a flexible timetable allowing audiences the opportunity to see the shows they want. This year, Beyond The Border will offer more stories, more experiences and more fun than ever before - maintaining its famously chilled and joyous atmosphere. 70

As well as performances in venues, audiences will be entertained around the festival site with street theatre, story walks and Blacksmith demonstrations. There are plenty of opportunities for audiences to take part in a variety of workshops for all ages and perform on our open mic stage. New for 2016 is Kidzone - a dedicated area for performances and activities for young people and their families. The bustling marketplace of arts and crafts stalls, world food stalls and real ale bar are also an essential and much-loved part of the festival experience. A visit to Beyond the Border 2016 is a fantastic way to take in the glorious coastline of the Vale whilst enjoying new, rich cultural experiences by performers from around the globe.

THE ‘CREPE ESCAPE’ It offers French style Crêpes with a variety of savoury and sweet fillings, together with fresh coffee blended and roasted by Peter James of Ross on Wye, and Award winning artisan Italian gelato ice-cream, in a variety of mouthwatering flavours.

All the ingredients are locally sourced and will be freshly made. And the name? “Well says Alison, we chose it because of the famous movie and because we hope customers will drop in, have a coffee and a Crêpe and escape from the world.”

Why a Crêperie we asked Alison. “My grandmother was a French teacher and my mother not only taught French but runs a business bringing French people to UK to live with local families and learn English. We regularly travelled to France as a family and that’s when I grew to love the French culture” She says. If you’re a savoury person, then you could try the smoked salmon, cream cheese with chives or spinach, walnuts, apple and goats cheese or chicken pesto and

When choosing the right flooring for your home, how do you know which company to choose? We’ve made your life easier by introducing you to a carpet and flooring company which has been covering the floors of many a Vale home since 1979. We met with Victoria Stedman of Leeway Carpets and Flooring Co to find out more.

LEEWAY CARPETS

A ND FLOORING

Who are the owners of the business Victoria? The directors of the company are John G W Davies, Lynne Davies and Luke Stoneman. Leeway Carpets was formed in 1979 and incorporated in 1999. What does Leeway offer? We offer a comprehensive service of all aspects of flooring in the commercial and home owner sector. This includes carpets, luxury vinyl tiles, commercial vinyl flooring and wood floors. We also specialise in bespoke products which are unusual in colour and design; to make a special floor for someone who is looking for something unique and individual.

What type of customers does Leeway attract? We see customers who are mostly looking for great personal service, and peace of mind that the work will be carried out on time and with the least disruption. We also offer a service for rental home owners and landlord clients who are working to a budget. Please describe your product range… On the domestic side, we carry s amples from patterned traditional Axminsters and Wiltons through to twist pile, loop pile, stripes and variations of tufted carpets. 78

From solid wood floors to engineered wood floors, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) in wood effect and ceramic tile effect. Bespoke rugs and anti-skid rug underlay. There’s almost nothing we can’t source or supply. What trends to you see emerging? We’re getting lots of requests for luxury vinyl tiles and, by way of carpets, we’re seeing lots of stripes, plains and plaids. The retro trend is strong too, so we’re seeing some 60s and 70s designs making a comeback.

“ There’s almost nothing we can’t source or supply.”

“We offer a comprehen- sive service of all aspects of flooring in the commercial and home owner sector.”

How do you keep on track with styles and trends? The carpet and tile industry is a lot like the fashion industry. We’re always looking to offer something that little bit different from the rest and keep abreast of industry fashion and trend news. What kind of contract work to you do? There is a strong market for contract work and we’re lucky to be working with Asda Superstores, Brains Pubs, Punch Taverns, catering for all aspects of their demands.

DESIGNER SOFAS DIRECT

When Designer Sofas Direct first opened their factory doors to the public they decided that they must provide three essential things to every single one of their customers. Firstly, the chance to choose quality hand-crafted furniture with the option to ‘mix and match’ between a vast range of styles, colours and fittings. general Manager, Boyd Jones, says, “We believe we offer a choice rarely found at other furniture outlets. We want to give the customer as much flexibility as possible when choosing designs.” Secondly, the chance to make significant savings on the normal retail price because customers are buying directly from Designer Sofas Direct, effectively cutting out the middlemen.

“We offer a choice rarely found at other furniture outlets.”

And, finally, their own bespoke range of furniture made under the Brynwood Designs banner, where you can have your furniture made to measure with a choice of over 1,000 fabrics and leather covers to choose from. Showroom team, Andrew and Lynne Thomas say, “Now you really can have furniture that fits your room perfectly all manufactured right here in Wales.” Add to this their personal attention and super friendly service and you can see why Designer Sofas Direct has become a name synonymous with quality, professionalism and after-sales peace of mind. Visit the showroom when looking to design your perfect suite. One of the joys of working on Vale Life is meeting new and interesting people with a story to tell. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Penarth welcome us into their beautiful home in Penarth.

OPEN HOUSE

We were shown around their home but the stand-out room for us was the gorgeous kitchen, incorporating a beautiful super-wide set of aluminium bi/fold doors by Alexander James Bi-fold. How did you hear about Alexander James Bi-folds? I heard about AAI through a fitter that my brother and I were using on another project we are currently working on. Having gone to great lengths to source two sets of bi-folds for that particular project, I was fairly confident that I was already getting the best deal and service around. However, one telephone conversation followed by an emailed quotation from Andrew proved me wrong.

“We are absolutely delighted with the completed extension, the design is flawless.

AAI were then contracted by me to supply a five metre set of aluminium bi-folding doors in charcoal grey which would ultimately become the predominant feature of a full-width single-storey extension to the rear of my own property in Penarth. What made you want to work with AAI? As partners who have rather fallen into building and property development, my brother and I pride ourselves on the high standard of the tradesmen, subcontractors and suppliers that we have built up over the last ten or so years. Quality, and reliability are essential, that and a very tightly controlled budget.

How did the project go? This being my own property, and what with a young family in residence throughout the build, scheduling was also of paramount importance, [especially given the fact that the project spanned the winter months!]. For this reason, and in conjunction with AAI, we elected to install the doors prior to knocking the original back wall of the house down. The compromise was that great care had to be taken to protect them throughout the job. This was easily offset by the benefit of the natural light it afforded, the insulation and also the facility to fold away the opening in order to disperse vast quantities of dust!

Generally speaking any project which includes a set of bi-folds implies a finish of a highly considered nature. The design is absolutely key. For this we are extremely fortunate to have the expert services of my sister-in-law Abigail Grummitt, whose website speaks for itself.

Were you pleased with the overall effect? We are absolutely delighted with the completed extension, the design is flawless. It is a dream open-plan space which also includes a separate utility room in which to shut away

82

boots, shoes, coats and all the other paraphernalia of modern day life, as well as providing an all-important second back door. What difference have the doors made to the way you live? Having exposed the chimney breast and installed a multi-fuel stove, this winter has been the cosiest on record; you cannot beat a real fire! Come the summer we are looking forward to entertaining on the patio our new doors neatly folded away. Furthermore, my wife has developed considerable flair when it comes to interior design, even though she will hate me for writing it! Would you be happy to recommend them to friends and colleagues? Moving forward Andrew and his team at AAI have become a much appreciated asset to our extensive team and future collaborations both on our own work and that of private clients is certain.

Despite officially opening on April Fools Day, Stores 4 Floors is definitely no joke. Run by rugby players Ross Johnston (formally of Bristol) and Rhys Gill (who recently signed for Cardiff Blues), Stores 4 Floors has just opened its second shop this March in Whitchurch. Welsh International, Sam Warburton, had the honour of cutting the ribbon.

SERIOUS FLOORING

Ross and Rhys are not joking when they tell you the products and services that they can provide. Vale Life caught up with them at their new Whitchurch shop. Please tell us about your flooring… We have laminate flooring available for the whole home. Our laminate floor not only works great in bedrooms, with its easier cleaning and wipe proof technology (perfect if the kids spill anything whilst playing computer games), but in all the living areas in your home too. Our experienced staff will help guide you on the right shades to match the rest of the home and work with a budget to get you the best deal. We also offer a price match guarantee on all of our flooring (including laminate). Seriously! Find a product of flooring cheaper elsewhere locally and we will happily match or even beat it in some cases. We believe we really are the cheapest supplier of quality laminate flooring in South Wales. So you can work to a budget? Whatever your flooring needs we are happy to discuss what you are looking for; to advise you on the best possible

solution and to match your budget whether that’s carpet, vinyl, wood, artificial grass or rugs. We have supplied artificial grass to clients around South Wales from commercial premises including nightclubs and small front gardens, so whatever the size of your flooring project we know what product will make the perfect fit.” What about measuring and fitting? Measuring up your room or garden can be a bit daunting if you’ve never purchased flooring before and, with it being something that should last several years, you want it to be just right. With that in mind, if you would like us to measure up your intended area we are more than happy to do so. If you live in the South Wales area and want some of the best prices on artificial grass, wooden floor, carpets and vinyl, perfectly measured and fitted by us at Stores 4 Floors in Pontyclun and Whitchurch, then give us a call. Can I fit it myself? You’re more than welcome to fit your own flooring but you can rest assured we 84

go beyond just selling you great flooring and offer a full fitting service on all our flooring we sell, including any underlay needed and landscaping to install your artificial grass. Are your fitters experienced? Our fitters have a wealth of experience, and the end product speaks for itself. So take a look at the exceptional standard our company works to with our previous work on fitting artificial grass, wooden flooring, laminate and hardwood to our South Wales customers. Comprising of three generations of master craftsmen, Brynmenyn based Teulu specialise in the design and production of hardwood furniture and kitchens of the very highest quality - all produced in-house.

TEULU: M ADE WITH LOVE

At the time of writing their new showroom is nearing completion and, as you read this, should be finished. The owners are keen to emphasise that it is very much a work in progress as new items will be added on completion. There are three ranges on display in the new showroom currently, and a fourth will be added shortly. Their beautifully hand-crafted ranges are named after Welsh Castles; Pembroke, Harlech, and Denbigh - with Chepstow to be added in the near future. Bespoke kitchens have become incredibly popular in recent years, not least for their individuality and functionality. The benefits multiply when you can find a reliable workshop of professionals who will design, produce and fit your dream kitchen; cutting out the middle man in the supply line, inevitably alleviating the hike in costs.

Plus, unusual room sizes, or quirky areas, can be put to their best use as Teulu’s master craftsmen can make furniture and units to any size, to completely fit and adapt to your space without the need for filler panels. Also, you can always add to your kitchen and home with matching pieces of furniture when time and resources allow. The options are endless, and you won’t have to suffer the infuriating line: “that range isn’t available anymore”. If you’re in the position of upgrading your house, a kitchen is one of the key areas to invest your money in as it will enhance your home and your living space.

Seen by many as the hub of their home, having a purpose made kitchen is an investment for future years. The care and attention Teulu put into making each piece, using only the best quality fittings and materials means that your kitchen will last for as long as you require. The kitchen can even be repainted when required to give a new lease of life, or a completely different look. With the luxury of having a building firm (A One Construction, Bridgend) as its sister company, the team at Teulu can put your mind at ease by taking care of any building work that’s required. If you’d like more open plan living, which has been on trend for quite a while, Teulu can assist by removing internal walls and converting two rooms into one. This creates a more social, workable family space within your home where everyone congregates. Quite often a part of design scheme will include an island or peninsula;

somewhere informal where you can perch on bar stools to socialise, chat while cooking, or enjoy a tea break. The cook is never far away from the action then, and more included in any social gatherings. We think this is a boon in the seemingly, never-ending hustle and bustle of day-to-day family life. To sum up: the beauty of a bespoke kitchen made by Teulu is that you get a solution designed for you and tailored to your lifestyle. Have fun making your dream kitchen come true, and when you’re browsing the beautiful hand-crafted kitchens at Teulu’s brandspanking-new showroom, you know you’ll be in good hands. This is one family that loves what it does and you can see it in everything they make.

Emma Cull, lives in North Cornelly near the beautiful Kenfig Hill Nature Reserve and, in our opinion, has a real talent for interior design, so when she wanted some new furniture, only bespoke would do, and that meant a call to Jack & Rose.

INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED A ND LOVINGLY CREATED

How did you hear about Jack and Rose? I was introduced to Dave from Jack & Rose through Julie Hughes of Interiors, Bridgend who has supplied our handmade curtains.

Jack and Rose made me exactly what I required, and to the size I required, to fit into my home. The wide choice of fabrics was also a massive positive; the only hard bit was to actually choose as there is so much choice.

What made you want to work with them? What I loved about the service Jack and Rose provided was to have the bespoke touch of the furniture, which I just couldn’t get in any of the other furniture shops. Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service. If I was unsure of something, Dave would bring the piece of furniture to our home allowing us to see how it would look before he went to the next stage of upholstering, which always gave us great reassurance.

What work did Jack and Rose carry out for you? My first purchase from Jack & Rose was a two seater settee to fit in our kitchen living area. From seeing the high quality of that piece of furniture, we ordered two Chesterfield style settees as part of a scheme that I was working on with Julie from interiors, who works closely with Dave. Then I bought a French bed for my little girl’s bedroom which needed some work so Jack and rose stripped, painted and re upholstered it it’s beautiful. 90

They also supplied the wallpaper to match the bed for our little girl’s bedroom. We then extended our kitchen so needed a bigger settee, so asked Dave to come and advise us on what we could have. From there we purchased two armchairs and another settee, which is very comfortable, with great child proof fabric and also looks good. We have also purchased a super king size bed, dining chairs, and had more furniture re-upholstered. Did you have your own ideas or did you work with an interior designer? Yes, I did have my own ideas of what I wanted and how I wanted the furniture to look like, but I did also get some ideas from the internet and Jack and Rose’s show room was a big help.

“Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service.”

Owner, David Waters talks a little about the history of Jack and Rose... How long has Jack and Rose been established? Jack and Rose was started by the Rowe company in 1995, supplying House of Fraser, the Rowe company had been manufacturing carpets since 1934. Jack and Rose was set up to complement this side of the business. Who are the owners of the business? We have been making the Jack and Rose furniture for the Rowe Company since 2011 and, in 2014, I acquired the brand and specialised in bespoke furniture, supplying interior designers and private clients. I am third generation in the upholstery business.

Where you happy with the end product? Definitely! We’ve been very happy with every purchase from Jack & Rose; the furniture standards are set very high and have been everything I imagined and more.

furniture from Jack and Rose after seeing and sitting on the furniture they have made for us. Dave is friendly, professional and very helpful - Jack and Rose have met all our expectations.

How long did the process take? I do take a long time to make my mind up, but as soon as I decided on what I wanted, the furniture making was around six to eight weeks.

What services do you offer? We offer a fully tailored service for both individual private clients and interior designers; any size, any shape, any material; if it involves upholstery, we can create it. For sofas, chairs and beds, we can take a drawing or a photo and create almost anything. Who would you like to work for? We would love to expand our commercial profile. We enjoy collaborating with designers when they are creating a hotel scheme or working with individual boutique hotels in creating a one-off statement piece to set a style.

Jack & Rose Banthorpe House, Crosby Yard Bridgend CF31 1JZ 01656 768844

Would you be happy to recommend Jack and Rose to friends and colleagues? Yes we’d highly recommend Jack and Rose to friends, and anyone else looking for that something special. My sister and brother have since purchased

Whether you are curious about buying antiques or are a seasoned antique lover, you’ll love what Lyons Den has to offer.

LYONS DEN

Owner Wendy Tuck opened Lyons Den on 1st March 2014 and, since then, word has spread about this shabby chic antiques shop. So popular, in fact, that Wendy and her trusted team are seeing new faces every day, both locally and as far away as London, the Isle of Wight and West Wales. What brings customers in? It’s not just that the shop, which is on two floors, and is full to the rafters with furniture, ornaments and curiosities perfect for any room in the house and garden, but because it’s known for being a really fun experience. Wendy has a keen eye for design and can offer great advice on all things antiques related.

If you find a piece that you love but needs a bit of attention, then the Lyons Den can restore this for you using their range of chalk paints. Sanding, recovering and reupholstering can also be added to Wendy’s list of skills. Words can’t describe the experience you get from walking into the Lyons Den. It really is something you need to discover for yourselves. Enjoy!

2015 was a big year for Shed Centre Wales. Based in Cefn Cribwr, near Bridgend, the business expanded massively, introducing an extended product catalogue and incorporating more businesses, including Griffiths flooring into the Shed Centre family. With all that happened in 2015, imagine what 2016 will bring!

SHEDTASTIC!

Now with over twenty-five display buildings for you to look at - ranging from sheds, potting sheds, summer houses and even double glazed log cabins, Shed Centre Wales has become one of the largest display sites in the area. In addition to a new, stylish shed, no garden is complete without some fab fencing, which, luckily, is also available in both standard and Tanalised ranges. And don’t forget some matching garden furniture, most of which is hand-made by local independent businesses, as Shed Centre Wales believes that working together and supporting the local economy is a must. With our busy day-to-day schedules you may be worried about when you will have time to put your new purchase together. Worry not, Shed Centre Wales have this covered.

Their hard working team work seven days a week not only delivering your purchases directly to you, but also putting them together. This option is so popular and well received that around 80% of their customers choose it. New for 2016, Shed Centre Wales will soon be providing hot tubs for hire (and for sale) and also welcomes Griffiths Flooring, who are now based on the site. This is only the very start of the new and exciting events occurring over the next twelve months at Shed Centre Wales looks like 2016 is going to be shedtastic!

Spring in the garden is all about reconnecting with the earth - the garden is waking up and sometimes it happens too early, as it did this year with the mild weather in December. As our favourite season begins, it’s our time to re-engage with what is around us. Use the change of weather to inspire yourself and get out into your garden. Vale Life’s resident award-winning gardening guru, Rob Hodge, tells us more.

NEW SEASON - NEW START

Spring is also the busiest time in the garden, so try to get a head start before the weeds start growing. At this time of year the list of jobs are endless, most of our pruning can be done now especially with roses, the borders need to be weeded and mulched with compost or manure and we can lift and divide herbaceous perennials.

“ The earlier we start planning, the better the finished product will be.”

From mid spring, if the weather is kind enough to us, we can start mowing the lawn regularly and apply lawn weed and feed. It is also a good time for replanting new roses, trees, shrubs and perennials with most of the good garden centres giving you lots of choice with new ideas. The earlier we start thinking and planning, the better the finished product will be.

“ Use the change of weather to inspire yourself to get out into that garden.”

Work out your priorities and decide where you want to be with your garden in three months’ time. Gardening is proven to be therapeutic and its benefits are second to none; fresh air, exercise and both physical and mental stimulation. With the longer days you will have more opportunities to enjoy the outdoor life and when the weather interferes with your spare time you can use it wisely to inform and educate yourself on plants and techniques that you can use in your garden. Also make the time to visit other gardens for inspiration so that you can make the most of your outdoor space. Even if the weather isn’t perfect, a BBQ in the garden, providing you dress accordingly, is better than eating a meal sat in front of the TV! 105

Champagne and Cartier

The luxury watchmaker, Cartier, selected Cardiff to launch its new Drive de Cartier collection; only the second time a collection has been previewed outside of London in the brand’s history. To celebrate, guests from across south Wales were treated to a champagne reception at luxury jewellers, Parkhouse, St.Davids, 27 The Hayes, Cardiff. They enjoyed an exclusive preview of Cartier’s new timepieces, which were unveiled earlier this year at the annual luxury watch fair, SIHH, in Switzerland. Drive de Cartier is a masculine watch designed for the men who drive their own lives. Prices start from £4,550 and will be available to purchase from Parkhouse from May this year. On the night, female guests were also given the rare opportunity to wear a stunning £175,000 diamond necklet, which was designed and produced by Parkhouse’s parent jewellers from Edinburgh, Laing, to mark its 175th anniversary last year. The spectacular one-off necklace boasts 447 dazzling diamonds, is set in 18ct white gold, and features a dramatic double diamond drop. The work of art took nine months to create, and although many of the guests loved trying on the 175 necklet, none were tempted to make a purchase, which means it’s still for sale. www.parkhousethejeweller.com

The view from the top Lewis Ballard Accountants pride themselves on seeing the big picture for their clients so, after winning the UK’s Most Inspiring Accountants award, the directors couldn’t think of a more fitting place to celebrate with their whole team than the dizzy heights at the top of the Shard in London.

Then when we were shown into our own private glass dining room things became really magical.” Neil Ballard added, “We had an unbelievable night and it was a real privilege to share such a wonderful experience together and show our team how much we appreciate them. It is something I personally will never ever forget.” www.lewisballard.co.uk

“It really was an amazing way to spend our prize money,” said Director Janet Ballard. “The whole team were so excited to be staying overnight in London, and getting dressed up for a swanky meal, so we knew it would be great fun. But nothing prepared us for the reaction as everyone stepped out onto the glass steps and gazed out at a truly dazzling London night sky.
