WELCOME
Summer breeze makes me feel fine... Goodbye Spring and hello Summer. Hello to summer blooms, walks in the park, BBQs on the beach and shedding those layers. The housing market may still not be improving so if you can’t move, then why not improve? In this issue we look at all things home-improvement related, from kitchens and conservatories, fenestration to blinds.
If you are in a position to move, then check out one of the luxurious new apartments at Hensol Castle Park. Phase three has just been released and is well worth a look.
We live in a beautiful part of Wales. Let’s go explore!
We take a closer look at thriving businesses in Stanwell Road in Penarth and a major development in Llantwit Major. We really love taking the dog for a walk on the beach there and enjoy the occasional ice cream from The Beach Café. What is particularly exciting for Llantwit and the Vale is the major regeneration that is underway in this beautiful and historic Heritage Coast town. There are plenty of interior and style features in this issue, so you’ll find lots of ideas for home-improvements. If you’re thinking of changing your mobile phone, check out The Last Word on page 50. I hope you enjoy this issue and we’ll see you again in the Autumn! Arbuthnot have the perfect package We all know the advantages to wearing quality sunglasses. ■ To protect our eyes from harmful UV rays ■ To reduce glare ■ Protection from wind, dust and debris ■ To reduce headaches and eye strain ■ To improve vision But buying a pair of sunglasses can be a costly experience, especially if you need prescription lenses. Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry have made things a little easier on the pocket by offering its customers their new sunglass package. Single vision prescription sunglasses can now be bought for a more affordable £149 with bifocal/varifocal or single vision Polarised prescription sunglasses from £199. CARDIFF
White collar boxers put on a show Not everyone comes to the sport of boxing in their childhood or teenage years so what do you do if you’re a complete carboholic and wake up one morning in your thirties, forties or fifties (yes, it probably is a mid-life crisis but what the heck), and decide that you really fancy getting in the ring and having a go. Well, White Collar Boxing may be for you.
The designer frames that are included in this fantastic offer from Arbuthnot Opticians are Vogue, Ralph Lauren and Inface. Mrs Kelly of Barry recently became the proud owner of a fine pair of Vogue sunglasses as pictured above. Ask any boxer, amateur or professional, novice or champion, how exhilarating and exciting it is to spar or box and they’ll tell you there’s no feeling like it. With White Collar there’s no age limit but if you’re between ten and twenty years old, you could have a future in amateur boxing. Just get in touch with your local boxing club. Don’t think for a minute that you can just put on a pair of gloves and jump in a ring. It’s not quite as simple as that. You’ll need to be reasonably fit, and well (you’ll be assessed by a doctor before being allowed to fight). If you’re interested in taking part in one of their sessions, whether for weight loss or to learn the art of boxing, you can arrange to go along to one of their taster sessions at the Fight Academy Wales in LLantrisant. Sessions are Wednesday 8.30 pm, Friday 8pm and Sunday 8pm where Jamie will be happy to take you through the session. ❧ 6 ❧

Boxing training is not for the faint hearted but if you’re looking for a programme that is a little different from the norm then this sort of training is definitely for you! The average participant tends to lose in the region of 16 - 18 lbs after six weeks of training by sticking to Jamie’s diet and training regime so the benefits are huge. Not every participant has to step into the ring, but after building your confidence and skill level this seems like an obvious next step that most of the gents seem to follow. If you’re interested in going along just contact Jamie on 07896 878336. www.jkafitness.com

A St John’s pupil equals a happy child
Each child is known to all the teachers and there is no concern that a child will not get enough attention either in or out of the classroom.
“The happiness and well-being of every child in our care is our priority,” says the Head of St John’s School, Mrs Carol Clint. Vale Life spoke further with Mrs Clint about the benefits that St John’s School provides its pupils.
What about children with special needs? St John’s acts as an outpost for Dyslexia Action. Teachers are trained to maintain ‘dyslexia friendly’ classrooms and we regularly achieve good results for all pupils, including dyslexic children.
Describe a day at St John’s A full day package is offered which includes our own daily transport, preschool and after-school care, extracurricular activities and a holiday club. Within the school day the curriculum is broad and is enhanced by many different activities and a variety of sporting and cultural experiences. Every school has a mission statement. What is St John’s? Our mission is to provide an environment that is secure, friendly and supportive where pupils are motivated to take advantage of every opportunity to learn and develop. What does the curriculum offer? The curriculum on offer is broad-based and balanced, incorporating academic subjects, art, music, games and PE.
Small classes permit a high level of individual attention and support which, combined with close monitoring of progress, often provide pupils with outstanding GCSE results. Pupils are encouraged to take part in many aspects of school life and everyone gets the opportunity to compete in sport representing the school, and to perform in language, musical and dramatic events. Other opportunities include academic challenges and competitions, team-building workshops, the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and organising and taking part in fund-raising activities. What makes the children happy? Parents often comment on how good it is to see older pupils talking to and encouraging the younger ones and the ‘St John’s family’ is an important part of how the school operates. ❧ 7 ❧

St. Clare’s School Pass with flying colours If you’d like to give your son or daughter the best start in life then it’s certainly worth considering St. Clare’s School, positioned in the beautiful coastal village of Newton, Porthcawl. St. Clare’s is preparing for big celebrations this year, as GCSE and A Level results are released at the end of August. Last year, 93% of their GCSE students achieved grades A* to C whilst the Welsh and Bridgend averages were just 66%. 48% achieved A* and A grades. Compare this to the Vale average of 23.8% and it becomes obvious that St. Clare’s do something a little differently. Likewise at A Level, St. Clare’s achieved 60% A* and A grades compared to just 24.4% across Wales and 35% across the Vale. As a non-selective school, this is a fantastic achievement.

Bailey Design Consultancy Paula Bailey has been renovating property for over ten years and, having seen the business flourish in the last year, decided to take on projects not only for herself but for other clients too. Paula offers a complete service from design, planning and building to electrics, plumbing, green energy, and interior design all of which are fully project managed to the very highest specification.
So, why do St. Clare’s students do so well? ■ Small class sizes mean that St. Clare’s can give your son or daughter more attention in the classroom. There’s no hiding at the back! Each teacher knows each and every pupil as an individual and works closely with them to help them fulfil their potential.
■ A family environment means that
everyone knows one another. St. Clare’s provides a friendly, protected atmosphere where children flourish. ■ With a wide range of extra-curricular
opportunities available to them, St. Clare’s pupils leave at the age of 18 as happy, well-rounded individuals who work hard, play hard and have a real love for life and all it offers.
■ Close relationships between pupils
and teachers, and also with parents. Is your son or daughter shy? Boisterous? Struggling or excelling academically? At St. Clare’s they work closely with you to ensure that everything they do helps your child to grow in every way.

A recent project Paula was involved in was the renovation of a traditional Pembrokeshire house in the National Parks. The first phase concentrated on modernising all of the electrics, plumbing and adding internet availability into most of the rooms. The company’s interior designer then designed each room sympathetically to the style of the house, renewing the old cast iron corner bath for a copper free standing bath. The front was exposed as natural stone and re-pointed, using the traditional lime mortar. Phase two of the project was slightly more elaborate with the design of a large two storey extension. The aim of this was for it to become an open-plan kitchen and diner incorporating under-floor heating that was to run under the limestone flooring. Large French doors were to be installed leading out to the garden which overlooked the sea. An ash staircase lead from the kitchen to a large vaulted bedroom and en-suite. Paula says, “The client was looking for a relaxed family home that would incorporate the old original house and the new extension without looking out of place and the one was to seamlessly flow into the other giving the new extension a contemporary open feel.” ❧ 12 ❧
“The client was looking for a relaxed family home that would incorporate the old original house and the new extension.” A very happy client, Sarah Linard said: “It has been a pleasure working with Paula and we simply could not have embarked on the project without her.” Bailey Design Consultancy 07794 431890 or 07821 026646 info@bailey-design.co.uk www.bailey-design.co.uk

If you haven’t been to the Vale Resort in Hensol recently, then you’re in for a treat. A £250,000 expansion and refurbishment means that the resort now offers a bigger, completely restyled spa, with unique features and treatments. Prepare to be...
SPA STRUCK Vale Life spoke to Spa Manager Claire Caddick about the recent development.
What’s your role at the Vale Spa? As Spa Manager my role encompasses all day-to-day operations, recruitment, and training. Recently, my focus has been on the development of the new spa which is focused in a new direction as a result of talking with our discerning guests about what they really want - it isn’t all about slimming, carrot juice and heat treatments any more! Many guests come on their own for the tranquility, and some like to chill out with friends. How long have you worked here? Over four years now and in that time there have been huge improvements and dramatic changes. What new treatments will there be? We have taken on a number of bespoke treatments from the Sundari range, which are exclusively available at the Vale Spa. They are traditional Indian Ayrvedic treatments which means they are created for the individual depending on their dosha (personality type).
And when you want to relax? The new look spa has three unique relaxation zones, each with a bespoke design to help you find your idea of perfect peace. If your idea of heaven is a comfy leather sofa and a handful of the latest glossy magazines then the stylish‘chill-out’ zone will be perfect for you. For something more relaxing, surround yourself with the soothing sounds of the ‘water’ zone with its comforting water beds and stunning water features - truly a haven of total calm where you can simply float away. If you want to shut off completely then the Indian-inspired ‘sleep’ zone where shimmering lanterns and sumptuous quilts will provide the ideal environment to doze.
What other products are available for your customers? Clarins is renowned worldwide for its innovative and results-driven product range, from face and body care to cosmetics. It has a loyal following and has been at the forefront of the industry for many years. This in itself is a major reason that it is our product of choice. We have a great relationship with them, and we are the only spa that they have agreed to work with directly to launch our own range of treatments created by myself in tandem with their treatment development manager. Tell us about your customers We do not have a ‘typical customer’. The percentage of men who visit us continues to slowly but steadily grow. We have many local people who call in for regular treatments and we have an increasing number of customers staying on a residential spa break package. We continue to welcome many day spa guests, on their own or in groups, from here in the Vale of Glamorgan and also from further afield. The new larger spa is also in the enviable position of being able to cater for groups of up to 50. So whether you are celebrating a birthday, ❧ 14 ❧
about to get married or simply friends getting together for some quality time, the spa can offer a range of tailored packages to suit you all and is perfect for a relaxing, yet fun packed group experience.
Where do you find inspiration? I researched a number of spas, but it’s more a case of developing your own ideas. We’ve worked really hard to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience for our guests. This ranges from a simple aura cleanse before entering the spa, through to individual fragrance rooms, and also offering areas that can be reserved for private groups and parties. Each customer wants something different from the spa and we wanted to be able to cater for all tastes and I believe we’ve achieved that. Bridgend-based Solar Sunshades is determined to see its future as a bright one. We donned sunglasses for a tour of the factory.
MADE IN THE SHADE
“The company’s success is down to keen pricing, an excellent workforce and a passion for getting it right,” says Solar’s Managing Director, Huw Davies. “Solar has been around for over thirty years because we offer customers excellent product and, I believe, unrivalled service.”
“We’re a real manufacturer,” says Huw proudly. “We’re not agents just sending orders off to big factories outside Wales. We employ over thirty people in Bridgend and that’s so important to the local economy. If you buy from Solar you know your money is being spent locally.”
Does that longevity matter I ask? “Well yes it does. If you buy off a company that’s gone out of business in six months’ time and there’s a problem, you’ll be left holding a pretty useless cord,” says Huw. “As Wales’ premier blind company we pride ourselves on offering a quality range of products at a fair price.”
Solar make an amazing range of products: from roller blinds right through to conservatory blinds and, with their Perfect Fit system, no drilling or screwing is required to fix the blinds to windows. “Our plantation shutters and motorised blinds are also becoming extremely popular with customers wanting a dramatic change of style and ease of use,” says Huw.
Solar might not be the cheapest blinds on the market, but it’s clear that they take quality, customer service and safety very seriously and it’s probably why customers seem to recommend them so highly.
Back in March, Solar launched its new ‘Inspirations’ range which, the company claims, contains their best collection of fabrics ever - with brand new designs, textures and a colour palette that couldn’t be more on trend ❧ 16 ❧
if it tried - simply stunning. “We’re not expensive,” says Huw. “Solar is affordable and, more importantly, if there ever is a problem, we’ll always be here to sort it out.” Commercial customers aren’t left out either. With Solar’s superb range of awnings and blinds, there’s no excuse for any business to be put in the shade by the competition. “Commercial customers are our most demanding,” says Huw. “If our quality is good enough for them, that speaks volumes.”

Summer Tasting menu June 2011
My great grandmother Violet grew roses as I do in our garden now. My great grandfather would always have a rose waiting for my mother on our visits during the summer.
Matt will be running his increasingly popular dining events throughout the Summer and Autumn. Please visit www.chefmattpowell.co.uk for more information.
My food reflects a sense of place, but also a sense of meaning and a definite sense of feeling and nostalgia. The following is a dessert that always reminds of her.
Prices start from £65 for food and £80 with a glass of wine for each course.
I steep, clean, fresh roses in cream overnight to impart its perfume and I use preserved elderflowers in sugar syrup with the addition of wild strawberries. The rest is just a simple parfait recipe.

When Vicky Williams was hit by another driver whilst in her car her insurance company informed her that she had to use their nominated repair shop. Vicky questioned this and discovered she had much more choice.
BODY TALK Tell us about your accident I was waiting to enter a roundabout when I was hit by another driver. As a result there was quite a lot of damage to the rear of my vehicle. I was quite shaken up. After I exchanged insurance details with the other driver, and after I’d been to the doctor, I contacted my insurance company to let them know what had happened, and to give them the other driver’s details.
What did your insurance company recommend you do? The insurance company recommended that I took my car to a garage on Ipswich Road. When I mentioned that I wanted to choose the garage myself, this was greatly discouraged. I was told this would delay the whole process of getting my car fixed by up to two weeks. I was also discouraged from accepting a courtesy car from Davies Motor Company, as I was told I should have a rental car from Enterprise.
“I wasn’t aware that I had complete right of choice.” Was the quote from Davies Motor Company competitive? They liaised with the insurance company directly on my behalf, and the insurance company accepted it, so it really must have been competitive. Would you recommend them? Without any shadow of a doubt.
Why did you choose Davies Motor Company to work on your car? I have taken my car there before, so I know that their work is affordable and of a consistently high standard.
“Their work is affordable and of a consistently high standard.”
Did you ever think that you could contact somebody other than who the insurance company suggested? I wasn’t aware that I had complete right of choice. I was quite surprised that my insurance company only offered me one repair shop and this was based on my postcode, which didn’t make any sense to me given the number of garages in the area. I do feel the insurance company tried to put me off choosing my own garage. ❧ 20 ❧

Vellacine is one of South Wales’ manufacturers that’s still enjoying growth despite foreign competition and a sluggish market. Vale Life spoke to Managing Director Mark Nayler to find out more.
LIGHT
HOUSE When you walk through Vellacine’s offices, one of the first things that strikes you is a real sense of professionalism. Perhaps not what you’d expect from a ‘double glazing’ industry that is awash with one-man bands, but the sense of ‘expertise’ here is palpable.
The recent work for developer Charles Church in Llanelli is an example of Vellacine at its absolute best: working with the client to ensure all aspects of the project were delivered on time and all their requirements met. “Developers and construction companies know they can rely on us,” Mark says proudly.
Mark shows us through the offices to a gallery window overlooking Vellacine’s workshops. Down below, the Vellacine team are busying themselves on several of the company’s recent contract wins. Mark is clearly proud of what Vellacine stands for. “We manufacture all our products right here in Hadfield Road. Besides our many private customers, we work with numerous demanding clients in the commercial sector, from schools and local councils to architects and developers.”
Mark is keen to stress Vellacine’s abilities: “We manufacture a wide range of products: windows, doors, conservatories, bi-fold doors in different materials - aluminium, uPVC - and in a wide range of colours. You name it, we can manufacture it.” The tour fills us with confidence. We are shown to a second large workroom where a large set of bi-fold doors is being manufactured.
“Customers can be sure that when they order from us, they’ll get the very best standards.” “These are becoming increasingly popular,” says Mark. “We’ve completed three sets this week! Patio and French doors are still popular but these are the in-thing.” There’s a real sense with Vellacine that they’re doing well, and doing so because, first and foremost, they’re very good at what they do and, second, they haven’t forgotten the customer is king. “We’re only as good as our last job,” Mark says with a confident but serious smile. “Customers can be sure that when they order from us, they’ll get the very best standards of manufacture and uncompromising customer service. Lots of companies talk the talk but we really do deliver.” Perhaps it’s that complete understanding of what their customers want that sets Vellacine apart. It certainly isn’t luck. You don’t build a business like this just on luck. It takes determination, but, more than that, it takes clarity of vision. “Composite aluminium/timber hybrid system. Vellacine at its absolute best.
Easily accessible by road and rail, the town of Llantwit Major sits neatly at the southern tip of Wales in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan.
LLANTWIT MAJOR What strikes the visitor to this charming town on the Heritage Coast is the friendliness of the local people and the surprising amount of history and activities available in and around the area. Llantwit Major boasts the historic church of St. Illtud, which is widely accepted as being on the site of the earliest seat of Christian learning in Wales. Much of the present church dates back to between 950 and 1400 AD.
The town itself can be loosely divided in two halves. The area around the church and town hall, referred to as the ‘Old Part’, has many historic buildings; these are marked with blue plaques which give a brief history of each. A twenty-minute walk around the blue-plaque trail is well worth the effort and for younger children a stop at the West End Pool is a must to see the fish. There are several pubs in this area for those in need of refreshment or a meal. A visit to the town hall to obtain further information is recommended. The newer part of the town contains the shopping area, which is also currently in the process of a regeneration project. Several nice cafĂŠs can be found in this area for those in need of non-alcoholic refreshment.
“There are great things happening in Llantwit Major - a lot we can be really proud of. The redevelopment is good for the local economy. I asked a lot of people across the Vale what they thought of Llantwit Major in preparation for this piece. The general consensus seemed to be the same... “Great beach!
For keen walkers, heading west takes you on to St. Donats Castle and further on to the lighthouses at Marcross. Whichever direction you leave takes you out into the beautiful countryside of the Vale of Glamorgan or along the coastline with views across the Bristol Channel. This might also be part of the reason for the decision to hold the National Eisteddfod of Wales near the town in the summer of 2012. Tony Bennett, Llantwit Major Town Hall
MAJOR
The brand new railway station has ensured the town is perfectly placed for commuters heading west to Bridgend and east to Cardiff and London, and sits squarely above the town centre which is now home to much redevelopment.
But when I pressed them about Llantwit Major itself, I’d get blank expressions. It seems that those of you who head for the beach don’t stop in the town and, if that’s the case, you really are missing out on one of the Vale’s most historic places. Llantwit has blue plaques aplenty and is steeped in history.
The other big draw for visitors is the beach, located a short drive away or within walking distance for those with more time. The beach is famous amongst the surfing community and from it you can walk along the cliff-top paths, which provide spectacular views across the Bristol Channel and back out across the Vale of Glamorgan.
And, if you’re thinking of buying a home in the Vale, you really should be considering Llantwit Major. It’s been voted one of the top three places to live in the country. There’s The Coalyard, a £5m development of twenty-four houses by Waterstone which will refocus the area to the east of the town.
There’s also been a £300,000 regeneration of Boverton Road which is revitalising frontage and creating a boulevard-type feel along with other aesthetic improvements. The other major project is the redevelopment of Filco, with a £1m makeover and a £500,000 retail extension which will include repaving, rescheming and signage. There are also further plans to build a cafÊ area which will provide a place for al fresco dining.

DEVELOPMENTS... Filco is in its 65th year of trading and employs three generations of the family. Ian Hunt, Filco’s Managing Director, is rightfully proud of the redevelopment. “This is a huge investment for us but we’re confident that Llantwit Major will be the better for it. We have a loyal customer base who have been patient and understanding while we make the improvements. Our store and the other businesses around us are
frequented by customers who want convenience, competitive pricing and, more importantly, to chat with staff and friends. Llantwit Major is a very close-knit and sociable community.” Ian is clearly excited about what he sees as a new dawn for the town. “We’re redesigning the rear and all the frontage right down to Lloyds Bank and the chemist. There will be new pop-up shops for starter businesses ❧ 25 ❧
with short lets to allow entrepreneurs to get their retail businesses. We want Llantwit Major to be a place where businesses can thrive. This phase should be complete by autumn and combined with events such as the Victorian Fair, Llantwit Major in Bloom and the Christmas illuminations, will ensure that the town continues to develop as one of the Vale of Glamorgan’s best places to live and also as one of our most important tourist attractions.”

Work hard, think hard and have fun! On a recent trip to St Illtyd Primary School, I must admit to being hit with a sense of calm and happiness from the boys and girls whose ages ranged from 3 to 11. The school’s head, Alan Smith, has created a team, and a curriculum, that reflects his vision of what a truly creative education should be about. As well as the usual subjects, the children also enjoy a variety of clubs within school hours including gardening, science and art. After-school clubs include netball, football and gymnastics.
But it’s Wednesday afternoon’s enrichment club that interested me the most. The younger and older children all work together on activities including golf, cookery, the Mabinogion, Junior Apprentice and Where The Wild Things Are. The older children wear green polo shirts so that the younger children, who wear red, can seek them out for help. Trips are also organised throughout the year. Meals are hot, nutritious and tasty - even the teachers eat them! They also have a resource base for children who need extra teaching support.
The school accepts children from Llantwit Major, and the RAF camp and feeds into both Llantwit Major and Cowbridge Comprehensives. Any parent in the locality would be thankful for a school like this on their doorstep. Wyndham House A centre for excellence Do you have one or more teeth missing? Are you worried about your smile? Do you want a permanent replacement you can trust? With a Diploma in Implantology from the Royal College of Surgeons, the UK’s gold standard qualification in dental implants and an advanced certificate in hard tissue augmentation, Simon Hill, principal dentist, should be your first port of call. A recent customer, Ian Mills, a dentist and implant surgeon in North Devon and an Academic Clinic Fellow spoke to Vale Life of his recent dental treatment at the practice. How did you hear about Simon? Simon and I met while we were both studying at the Royal College of Surgeons for our Implant Diploma. We often worked together as partners and subsequently became good friends. I saw at first-hand how good his clinical skills were and was very impressed with his knowledge and attention to detail in treatment planning implant cases. When I subsequently required implant treatment, I obviously wanted to have it done by one of the best implant surgeons in the UK and therefore asked Simon to undertake the work. What prompted the call? I had my front tooth knocked out when I was fifteen years old and had worn a denture ever since. Because of the time lapse since the injury, I had lost a lot of bone in the gap and my teeth had moved, which made implant treatment extremely complex. I required orthodontic treatment to straighten the teeth and a bone graft to build up the missing bone. Simon grafted a piece of bone from my chin and the procedure was a complete success. An implant was placed six months later with a crown attached shortly afterwards.
Ian Mills, left and Simon Hill Are you happy with the result? Absolutely delighted! I now have a new front tooth which looks completely natural rather than having to wear a denture. The treatment was significantly more complex than normal, but it was carried out by Simon and his team expertly with no problems at any stage. Many dentists offer implants, but few have the training, experience and attention to detail which Simon has, and I therefore have no hesitation in recommending Wyndham Dental Practice as a centre of excellence for implant treatment.

From gorgeous classic designs to highly styled, hard-edged contemporary, Cowbridge-based Room For Living’s team of talented designers have always been aficionados of the straight edge. That is until now...
CURVACEOUS CREATIONS...
❧ 30 ❧
“The curving flow of the units and morphing, almost organic shapes are very pleasing to the eye and appear to have an almost organic feel about them. We’re all very excited about the new collection.” Room For Living’s new kitchen range pays homage to the curve. It’s not a dipping of the toe or a mere dalliance with curvature. No, this is Room For Living doing what it does best: embracing a trend and absolutely going with the flow. Room For Living’s Managing Director Mike MacNabb is especially excited by the new collection. “The truth is, we’ve been looking for something like this for a long time,” he says. “Curvy kitchens have been around the corner, or should I say around the bend, for quite some time. The hard-edged, linear designs that we’ve been used to are as popular as ever, but because of new technological developments these beautiful and dynamic shapes are now achievable.” Room For Living’s new range has received high praise across the industry, already winning several awards, and has been lauded in the trade press. “This is a contemporary kitchen collection built around eight spectacular signature looks,” enthuses Mike. And with names like Contour Curve, Wave Curve and Crescent Curve, the range simply can’t fail to inspire a designer’s imagination. ❧ 31 ❧
The curving flow of the units and morphing, almost organic shapes are very pleasing to the eye and appear to have an almost organic feel about them. “I think the images speak for themselves,” says Mike. “Many of our clients will still want the traditional and many will want the sharp, contemporary look but, for some, the curve will be just what they’ve been looking for. We’re all very excited about creating customers’ kitchens using the new collection.”

If you need something for a wedding, there’s no reason it can’t also service you for work afterwards. A silvery-grey suit, white shirt and black tie is a great look, along with a black suit, white shirt and silver tie. Pink always goes down well at a wedding but just do the tie, not the shirt.

Fashion blogs are the new fashion magazines so we thought we would jump on board and start our very own stylish blog.
A selection of locally crafted baby gifts, pre-walker booties, pumps and wellies are available and there is an area where children can play to their heart’s content with books and crayons. It’s amazing what’s been done in such a small space – you’ll love it.
Events are starting to mount up for the summer, and be it a wedding, the polo or just a party. Do we wear those solitary boring items that we’ve worn before, or do we treat ourselves to something new? Being a retailer, of course, I’d have to advise the latter!
Russell set up his popular men’s outfitters Hawkes Essentials in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade some fourteen years ago and has extensive experience in the world of men’s clothing.

As for the polo and the no jeans rule, try and contrast the colours you wear. Don’t put pastel with pastel: have one strong colour and one weak one. The good old blazer is usually a winner as long as it's not double breasted with gold buttons. Make it single please, two button preferably. We are now stocking Guide shirts for some added flare: perfect for a little peacocking! As for parties, we have had some great sales on. Flowery shirts worn with jeans look great. Shoes are also a great accessory. Our pink snakeskins and TVR purple crocks are fantastic and somewhat of a talking point. Jeffery West are the best! ❧ 32 ❧

There’s a quiet revolution going on at SpaceFittingFurniture. No big announcements, no fanfare of trumpets but, quite frankly, there should be.
DESIGN REVOLUTION The fact is Steve and Claire Bloom have been designing furniture for other living spaces and it’s becoming very popular with their kitchen clients. Looking at the quality and range of units and finishes, it’s not difficult to see why the leap could be made. “It’s not something that we’ve ever really promoted,” says Claire. “It all started with our own home. Steve thought because Rational (the company’s kitchen units) is a modular system, we could quite easily adapt it to other rooms in our home, so we started with the lounge and went from there.” “When you think about it, it makes perfect sense,” says Steve. “The units have to be extremely hard wearing for use in a kitchen environment. They’ll never get that kind of use in a living room so will last a long time, and the range of finishes and surfaces means we have a great palette to work with.” They liked the results in their living room so much that their bedroom has also been transformed along with other rooms. “The great thing is that they don’t look like kitchen units in a lounge or bedroom,” says Claire. “Each room is modern and contemporary. Initially friends thought we had bought furniture specially and were really surprised when we told them it was Rational.” Talking to Steve you realise that there really are no limits. The stunning curved space recently created in the showroom reinforces this. “There’s literally nothing we can’t do,” enthuses Steve. And he’s right: the beautiful curved room with its cleverly designed storage wall and stunning flat screen television and media centre proves that the solutions aren’t all based on right angles.
“We’re getting more and more enquiries from our kitchen customers to create furniture for other rooms in their homes so we thought we’d actually start promoting it,” says Steve. You can’t blame them. From what I’ve seen, the build quality is superb and the finished product is supremely stylish. “We design kitchens for purpose, so why not take the same practical design approach to our living, storage and sleeping spaces? It just makes perfect sense,” says Steve.

If you’ve not stepped foot into Arbuthnot Opticians in Barry recently, you’ll be in for a big surprise, as the practice has undergone a transformation. Vale Life talked to Optometrist and Partner James Davies on the changes.
A NEW LOOK Are you introducing new frames? We’re constantly sourcing and adding new frames and are committed to offering our customers something different. We stock a large number of designer frames which you won’t see in the high street chains. We’re a boutique shop and the refurbishment now means we can display even more, such as the bespoke Tom Davies range; frames that are truly unique to each individual.
Why the refurb? Quite simply to give our customers a great experience when they visit us. The service we offer and the technology and equipment we use is first-class . The frames and lenses we offer are stylish, unique and bang up-todate so we wanted our shop to reflect this and to give our customers an enjoyable shopping experience. What changes have been made? Arbuthnots stands out from the other opticians on the high-street. Bespoke hand-made units now display our products, so customers can easily browse and try on our frames, with enhanced lighting and lots of room. We want people to feel comfortable trying on frames and for it to be a pleasurable experience. There are also new consulting rooms for eye examinations and hearing tests on the ground floor. We know some people can find going for an eye test daunting, so we’ve tried to make Arbuthnots a welcoming and enjoyable practice to visit. Our new computer system means all of our customers’ records are stored safely and securely and at a touch of a button we can bring up a customer’s history. We also have a dedicated room for our optical coherence tomographer, fundus camera and digital photographic slit lamp, which allow us to photograph and take 3D scans of your eyes. Anyone on our EyeCare Plan gets this as part of their eye test. The only thing we haven’t changed is our team of experts. Customers can expect the same level of professional and reliable service they have benefited from over the last 35 years.
Sunglasses are now more fashionable than ever thanks to Ray-Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim and many other brands. We’ll also be using our new increased modernised display area to offer a wider range of these. Many sunglasses can also be made up to a customer’s prescription. We know it’s important for customers to look and feel good in their sunglasses, no matter what strength glasses they use. We also stock a range of sunglasses with tints made specifically for certain sports such as golf and cycling. Can you tell us about the décor? We’ve gone for a modern, light and airy feel which we hope is welcoming and different from any other opticians on the high street. The specially designed display furniture has a high-gloss ebony finish, and is complemented by calming décor which combines soft curves with natural tones and textures. The style reflects our commitment to customers, which is to provide a unique, enjoyable and professional service delivered by a team of optometry experts. To celebrate our refurbishment we’re offering three months of free contact lenses when customers sign up to our eyecare plan*. The Arbuthnot EyeCare Plan allows our patients and customers to make the most of our value, choice and care. The key benefits are all eyecare covered (including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography), examinations as often as you like, 33% off all glasses, peace of mind cover with the Arbuthnot Accidental Damage Scheme and reduced contact lens prices. See instore for more details. *Conditions apply.

STANWELL PENARTH
Take it to the max with Julie T!
Ok, so Julie T isn’t in Stanwell Road but it’s only just up the road, so I’m using a bit of artistic licence here! The maxi dress has been a staple in many a woman’s wardrobe over the last few years (certainly mine!) and it looks like it’s here to stay.
Ginger’s Ginger’s attracts and inspires generations of fashion-lovers. With so much on offer, it could be regarded as a mini department store.
If you’re stocking up on wardrobe staples this summer, then make sure the maxi is on your list. This style of dress is oh so flattering, the light material will keep you cool and stylish and, with so many prints, colours and styles to choose from, you can wear one to any event.
“I particularly like the brands that they have like Sahara and Adini. Linen and cotton are my favourite materials and both these designs suit me during the summer months. There are always plenty of garments to choose from,” says Ginger’s faithful Josephine Shan Jarman.
Whether it’s a casual lunch with friends, a day at the polo or a special summer wedding, Julie T has a maxi to suit you. If you’re still not convinced, then Julie T has a range of eclectic pieces for both daytime and evening for the modern woman (whatever your age) who wants to look fabulous. 1 Windsor Terrace, Penarth CF64 1AA 029 2070 8784

ROAD
Pharmacists do a lot more than count pills and fill bottles. Their roles increasingly are evolving to deal more with doctors and patients to determine the most appropriate drug regimen. This certainly can be said for this independent, long-established local pharmacy in the hub of this community. Over and above the general in-store dispensing service, there are the added benefits of prescription delivery and pick-ups. A variety of other essential services such as blood-pressure testing, Medicines Use Reviews (MUR), and holiday and travel advice are available to make self-care even easier; and a private consultation room provides customers with friendly, confidential advice from owner Jane Soltys, a qualified pharmacist, and her professionally trained team about overthe-counter treatments, emergency contraception and minor ailments such as coughs, colds, hay fever and skin complaints. There’s even a weekly weigh-in to help with weight management and advice with Celebrity Slim. A comprehensive range of toiletries, make-up and personal hygiene staples are stocked for the whole family.

Snell’s
Going on holiday, thinking about having a colour on your hair? Hayley, co-owner of this popular salon in Penarth says, “Whether you’re having a dramatic colour transformation or maybe a few sun kissed highlights, it's important to protect your hair from the sun, sea and even the chlorine in the swimming pool.”
I’ve been buying my newspapers from Snell’s for a number of years, as well as birthday cards and the odd chocolate bar, but little did I know that this family run business, celebrating 50 years this year, also stocks an extensive range of stationery, magazines, office supplies and computer consumables.
The up-to-date care products available today not only condition they also protect and prolong your colour. Why not call in at Blu for a free consultation and if you bring this advertisement along, it will entitle you to 20% off your colour.
Owner Richard is proud (and quite rightly so) of his contract for supplying a local prestigious charity with all its office supplies. So, if it’s a just pencil you need or are in business and require a complete office re-fit, give Richard a call.

To get ahead... TYPE BUSINESS One of the best ways to get more business is to utilise social media; blogging, Facebook and Twitter. The key tool here is a blog but where do you start? Jason, owner of Type Business says, “You need to think bigger than just a website if you want to increase online business. Your blog can display recent social media activity, keeping your pages co-ordinated and up to date, it’s about telling your clients or customers that you are the expert and making your content accessible. Understanding social media is the challenge, there is no point doing something if you don’t have a clear objective. We can help your business by combining a website,
blog and social media bundle into one integrated solution that is easy to use and effective. We can explain social media etiquette, provide training and help you make the most of the web to create an achievable strategy for your business.”

My favourites are Espresso, Strawberry, Lemon Grass and Sage. Worth every penny!” Spiro says, “At Gauci, we don’t want to be the biggest candle business in the world, just the best. Inspiring the Vale Bursaries Launched in the Summer of 2009, the ‘Inspiring the Vale Bursaries’ project has assisted in the setup of over twenty new businesses in the rural Vale of Glamorgan. The aim of the project, run by Creative Rural Communities, was to give the young people of the rural Vale the opportunity to develop innovative business ideas, retain skills in the local area and encourage entrepreneurship. With 23 new businesses formed by 27 young people from the local area, it’s safe to say the project has been an overwhelming success. In order to be eligible, the applicants had to live in the rural Vale, be aged 30 or under and new to the experience of setting up their own business. The application process included writing a business plan and presenting to a panel of judges. Successful applicants were given up to £3,000 or 75% towards the costs of setting up their own business.
The range of businesses is diverse, with applicants drawing on personal experience and circumstance to set up a business of their choice. Lickle Pickle was started by a couple of working mums who were looking for a greater work/life balance; MAB Gardening was the brainchild of an A-level student who was looking to develop a personal interest in gardening into a career. From photographers and dancers to personal fitness trainers, surf academies and top-secret renewable energy inventions, the range of businesses receiving financial support from the ‘Inspiring the Vale Bursaries’ is varied. Nia Hollins of Creative Rural Communities said, “Working with the people behind these businesses has been inspiring. Though the ‘Inspiring the Vale Bursaries’ have given them the support to start their own businesses, it is the applicants themselves who are responsible for making their businesses grow and develop. I wish each and every one well in the future and hope their ventures continue to grow into successful, profitable businesses.”
“The range of businesses receiving financial support from the ‘Inspiring the Vale Bursaries’ is varied.
In addition to the grant scheme, the project also helped the two local comprehensives, Cowbridge and Llantwit Major, with their Enterprise Week activities. At Llantwit over 800 pupils were involved in enterprise activity in their school, whilst at Cowbridge over 200 pupils worked with representatives from the local community, local businesses and volunteer organisations. Though the project has now come to an end, the investment that the new businesses have received will provide a sound starting point from which they can develop in the future. The ‘Inspiring the Vale Bursaries’ project was funded through the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the Rural Development Plan for Wales through the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. TO BOLDLY GO... The Business Centre, situated on the outskirts of Barry provides flexible serviced office space, virtual office services and conference and meeting room hire. It is owned and operated by the owners of long established moving and storage company Masons Moving Group Ltd. Masons have over 105 years of business experience so they really understand what businesses need to function professionally. James Mason, The Business Centre’s Manager says, “The Business Centre is the only fully serviced office accommodation in the Vale of Glamorgan and since opening in January 2007 we have revitalised the modern, competitive office accommodation industry within the area. The Business Centre is independent and has a reputation for providing a personal service of the highest standard in a professional but convivial environment. “We currently operate businesses in the hardest economic downturn of modern times and, along with all businesses, we look to make savings wherever possible. It’s not always easy when the service we provide has to be of the highest standard but the more efficient we are, means less unwelcome increases in overheads for clients. The Business Centre provides: ■ Flexible serviced office suites for one to twelve people ■ One monthly transparent invoice (no hidden charges) ■ No long term leases (3 month minimum agreement) ■ One month notice period to cancel* ■ Top of the range IT and telecoms ■ FREE parking ■ FREE on-site gym ■ In-house café - The Coffee Zone. THE LAST WORD Chris Reynolds owns and manages Fonehouse in Penarth and when he isn’t setting up customers’ email and mobile broadband or downloading apps, you’ll find him cycling around the Vale (but he’ll still be thinking about mobile phones). Please tell us about Fonehouse. We’re on Glebe Street in Penarth. We sell mobile phones, accessories and data solutions (internet on phone, mobile laptop) for private and business customers. I breathe, eat and sleep mobile phones - it’s what I do. How long has Fonehouse been in Penarth? Two years. I really like it here. What brands do you offer? All the top brands: HTC, Samsung, Nokia, Apple iPhone, Blackberry plus a large range of accessories, chargers, incar chargers, cases, memory cards and sticks and a large range of Bluetooth from dongles to car kits. Is there anything you don’t know about phones? I’d like to think I’m on top of the game. Come in and put us to the test. What phone do you use? It’s an HTC Desire. It’s an awesome piece of kit. It does everything. Simple to use. It has excellent internet access and uses the Android operating system which, personally, I think is the most user friendly. And it works as both a personal and business phone. It’s brilliant – thousands of free games and applications (apps). What do you like about Penarth? People are friendly and it’s by the sea. What do you do when you’re not at Fonehouse? I love swimming with my son and I’m just getting into cycling.
“Chris offers a free tariff review and will guarantee to find you the right phone at the right price and with the right tariff.”
How’s business? Business is okay - we’re expanding into new areas. For example, we’re doing more with business (b2b) and commercial customers. We’ve developed a great selection of tarrifs for business users. With this and the great deals we provide for personal customers, we think this is a very exciting time - lots of opportunities.
“We find that a lot of new customers are on too high a tariff because they have just never had a tariff review.”
Why should people come to you and not directly to the larger mobile phone chains? I believe we offer a much more personal service. We have the time to ensure customers have an excellent level of service that they expect and to find the right phone and package that suits them. All too often with the bigger chains, they’re so busy that they just can’t give you the quality of service mobile customers deserve. Also, we’re completely impartial so we’re not tied to a particular network.
What networks do you offer? All the major mobile networks: Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 – they’re really our main ones. Quality of signal varies widely in the Vale. It’s a rural reception so signal strength can literally vary from street to street.
Additionally, we provide a number of services such as setting up phones and email for our customers. It’s that extra level of service that you just don’t get from the big boys.
Are you offering any incentives or promotions at present? We always have great deals on but at the moment, anyone who comes in and signs up or takes out a new contract or upgrade before the 31st July will be entered into a free prize draw to win a 40inch LED HD TV with Freeview.
Where do you see Fonehouse in a few years? Hopefully with more shops across the Vale - across South Wales even providing the same standard of service we offer our customers in Penarth. Where do your customers come from? Right across the Vale and Cardiff. We also get quite a bit of business from tourists and visitors to the area. What’s your most popular seller at this moment? HTC are extremely popular and are outselling every other phone here at Fonehouse - they’re probably our biggest sellers. We’re also seeing BlackBerry and Samsung selling quite well too. ❧ 50 ❧
