Passionate about the Vale We are independent. We live in the Vale. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk is correct and accurate. WE’RE FIVE! Five years ago we published the first ever issue of Vale Life. At the time the economy was riding high and all was good with the world. Since that time, much has changed. What was a merrygo-round has turned into something of a rollercoaster ride and, the ride, it would appear, hasn’t finished yet. For us, despite the economic difficulties, it has been an exciting time. The magazine has flourished and, as we go to print, our little Vale Of Glamorgan publishing company now publishes three other titles: City Life, Valleys Life and West Life. All are in the style of Vale Life and printed on good quality paper right here in South Wales. We’ve met some wonderful people over the last five years. Some are suppliers, some are advertisers and many are readers who tell us how much they like the magazine. Many have become good friends.
Every word in our magazines appears online and our websites are visited by thousands of people from over one hundred and twenty countries. We also produce digital editions of our publications and they enjoy their own readership. These alone are enjoying close to half a million page views so we’re doing our bit to promote the Vale of Glamorgan beyond South Wales. We’d like to throw a big party to celebrate but, like most businesses, we have more pressing things to invest in. We will have a glass of champagne to celebrate – after all we’re five years old and we’re very proud of that.

Ty Hafan set to be an Olympic ‘Knockout’ After being inspired by the journey of the Olympic torch through Wales, families, friends and work colleagues have an opportunity to take part in a pre-Olympic themed event of their own at the South Wales Police ground, at Waterton Park, Bridgend on Saturday 21 July.
Participants and spectators will even be able to have their photograph taken holding a genuine Olympic torch which was carried in the official relay by longtime Ty^ Hafan volunteer Lynn Hull from Cardiff.
Those old enough to remember will know that ‘It’s a Knockout’ began back in the 70’s and has long gone from our television screens which is probably why the Ty^ Hafan event has become so popular in recent years.
Ty^ Hafan, the family hospice for young lives is staging its third ‘It’s a Knock Out’ with a definite Olympic flavour as teams get to choose which of the 147 countries they would like to represent and they can add to the fun by dressing up accordingly; as long as they are still able to complete the challenges in their country’s costumes. Prizes for various achievements throughout the day will include ‘Best Costume’.
Entry is £100 per team to register for the event with each member being asked to raise a realistic minimum of £55 in sponsorship.
Although the competition is likely to be just as fierce as in the big event, everyone taking part is guaranteed to get wet and wild on challenges such as the Wedge and the Squeezies.
All money raised on the day will contribute to ensuring that Ty^ Hafan can continue providing care and support to the increasing number of children, young people and their families, from across Wales, who are being referred to its range of services.
This is a great spectator event too and a real fun day out for the whole family.
The fun will start at 11am on Saturday 21 July at Waterton Park so now is the time to get your team of 10 together from amongst your friends and workmates and register at www.tyhafan.org/knockout or contact 029 2067 2060.
Cadwalder’s is still an amazing ice cream emporium but now it’s also a café bar serving meals, snacks and drinks.
Also, at the height of summer, in July, there’ll be two new restaurants opening – luxury French Entrecote and Italian ristorante Zizzi.

PENARTH
A tribute to ‘Wonder Girls’ of yesteryear
BARRY
Olympic torch bearer in Barry Olympic Torch bearer, Gary Mickelsen, called in to The Little Blue Deli on Thompson Street, Barry with his family after completing his part in the Olympic Torches’ journey around Britain.
Women in Wolsey bathing suits, the towns of Penarth and Barry, and the daring of the first person to swim the treacherous Bristol Channel were the inspiration for a new novel set in South Wales. In 1927, Kathleen Thomas, of Penarth, was the first ever to swim from her home town to Weston-super-Mare, succeeding where many men had failed. Two years later, a 16-year-old schoolgirl, Edith Parnell, became the ‘It Girl’ of her day when she completed the crossing in 10 hours, 17 minutes and 10 seconds.
Gary was chosen as he and his wife Penny have been involved in charity fund-raising for diabetes charity JDRF after one of their children developed the condition at just three years old. The Little Blue Deli www.facebook.com/LittleBlueDeli Olympics website www.london2012.com JDRF Diabetes Charity www.jdrf.org.uk
Catherine Jones, author of Wonder Girls, said, “I couldn’t believe the daring and stamina of these swimmers at a time when women were called harlots for baring their knees! Though fiction, I hope the novel pays tribute to their strength and daring as well as capturing the charm and atmosphere of seaside towns in the Vale. With its streets of Blue Lias Victorian houses, Penarth was a definite inspiration for the setting though Barry’s old lido puts in an appearance in the opening chapters.” Wonder Girls is described as ‘an enchanting and uplifting tale of love, friendship and the wondrousness of women,’ published by Simon & Schuster on June 7, £12.99.

LeRaj. No run-of-themill Indian restaurant I’m a Chinese kind of guy. Some people like Indian food, some prefer Chinese - it’s certainly that way in our house. My wife absolutely adores Indian and I am in heaven if there’s a plate of special fried rice in front of me so, when my wife wants an Indian, it feels a little like a duty meal. After my first visit to LeRaj, I can, with all honestly, say those days are over. The first impression of LeRaj’s interior is it’s quirky and eclectic - something I liked very much. I loved the ornamental touches and the ambience. It felt good to be there and that, combined with an effortless and unforced friendly welcome from the staff, meant we were off to a good start. The food is simply excellent and, even though it probably wasn’t going to help reduce my waistline any time soon, it certainly looked and tasted as if it would - beautifully fresh and wonderfully balanced flavours. Yes, I said that word, flavours - LeRaj offers bundles of them. So many Indian restaurants think heat and spice means flavour - it doesn’t.
“Over three courses, our taste buds were treated to a feast of flavours and tasty, textured treats.”
Good coffees rounded off an excellent evening and LeRaj managed to change this particular Chinese fan’s opinion of Indian cooking. Would I return? Yes. Would I recommend LeRaj? Absolutely. This is a great, family run restaurant that definitely deserves your custom.
Over three courses, our taste buds were treated to a feast of flavours and tasty, textured treats. Onion Bhaji and Chef’s Spicy Chicken Bites were followed by mains of Chicken Karahi, Lamb Pasanda and a magnificent Tandoori Mixed Platter with a selection of rices; Peshwani, Pillau and LeRaj Special Fried Rice (well I had to try it!). The irony in all this is that LeRaj’s special fried rice is truly special. I know I’m tipping my hat to Chinese again but, honestly, it is wonderful and probably one of the best I’ve ever eaten. If anyone ever asks Chinese or Indian, it’s no longer so clear cut! Despite feeling pleasantly full (the portions really are excellent value), we decided to share a couple of desserts. They were the perfect accompaniment after the richness of the mains and a welcome departure from the preprepared ones you get at most Indian restaurants. ❧ 11 ❧

River View Chinese Restaurant
Caffi Nia - good food, good coffee
Hamptons - the gift of Sunday Lunch
If you’ve a penchant for superb Chinese food – and I mean the real deal, then make your way to the River View Chinese Restaurant on Penny Lane.
Nothing beats ice cream on a warm summer’s day - as long as the ice cream is good that is! There’s no denying the taste of the famous north Walian ice cream that is Cadwaladers.
Fans of Hamptons, especially The Blue Pelican Café (and I include myself in this enlightened group) will already know how good it is but have you tried it on Sunday?
You can enjoy your meal, either on the ground floor, beneath parasols if the sun it too hot or bright, or at one of the tables on the first floor which overlooks the river Thaw. The clue really is in the title here. Dining at River View enables you to watch the wonderful wildlife, including the ducks and, if you look closely, you can also see one of the many river trout as you enjoy your lunch prepared using the freshest of ingredients and cooked to order by chef Shui Guang. Why not try one of chef’s south east Asian dishes? They’re proving very popular. Whether you’re dining as a couple or as a family, the River View Chinese Restaurant shouldn’t be saved for a special occasion, especially as it’s reasonably priced and excellent value for money.
You can find this here as well as paninis, quiches and a great choice of locally sourced cakes including bara brith, tea cakes, carrot cake and Welsh cakes to name but a few. Nia also prides herself on serving the finest quality coffee, which has been the trademark of the previous owners of this popular cafe. Open from 8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm on Saturday and 10am to 1pm on Sundays, Caffi Nia extends a warm welcome to all for breakfast, lunch or tea either inside this quirky circular eatery or, if the sun is shining, at one of the tables on the bridge overlooking the pretty river. “R’wyn edrych ymlaen is weld pawb,” says Nia.
I’m used to great food from The Blue Pelican Café Monday to Saturday but Sunday roast? At Hamptons? Really? Yes folks, it’s official, Hamptons serves up a rather decent Sunday lunch. Roasties, perfect veg (ever so slightly al dente) and great gravy. I went for the chicken with Prosciutto and mushroom duxelle and my wife chose her staple favourite, Beef. Both were beautifully cooked. There are a couple of things I really liked about Hamptons. First, we didn’t get that slightly irritating question, ‘Is everything alright?’ I know it’s polite but, trust me, I’ll let you know if it isn’t. Second, although the meals came with gravy, we were given an extra jug. I love gravy and to have some ‘extra’ made me feel all warm and lovely inside (it’s a man thing). Starters and desserts were excellent. Eton Mess and Bread & Butter Pudding were passed back and forth between us with enthusiasm and they were very, very good indeed. So, does Hamptons cut it for Sunday lunch? Yes. There’s just one slight drawback - you have to run the gift gauntlet and that might add a few pounds to a very reasonable bill.

“Later this Summer, we’ll be taking food orders right up until 9pm.”
It’s been a very busy few months for everyone at The Little Blue Deli on Thompson Street in Barry - busy looking after their customers but also extremely busy behind the scenes.
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS The Little Blue Deli’s menu has also had a summer makeover - with fresh fruit smoothies, strawberries and cream, and beautiful seasonal salads. We asked the team what people were eating most in the sunny weather.
“Customers are eating like they’re on holiday”, was the answer. Foods that remind customers of a nice holiday or a peaceful weekend at home. Paella, Greek salad (no downturn here), tomato, mozzarella and basil salad, and the widest range of paninis we’ve ever seen. Seems like there is always something new happening at The little Blue Deli. Late night opening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a whole new evening menu is another development that will, no doubt, prove popular with customers. “Later this Summer, we’ll be taking food orders right up until 9pm which gives customers much more time to relax and enjoy themselves,” said Jonathan. “Our evening menu will feature a modern food mix that includes steaks, pasta, paella, salads, huge burgers and chicken. All home-made and fresh, nothing processed or pre-packed.” There will be a whole new dessert menu too along with a range of stunning home-made cakes and if you’re already a customer, you’ll know that the word cake and the Little Blue Deli are almost inseperable.
So what’s next for The Little Blue Deli? Through pure demand it’s open seven days a week and now and with late night opening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we’re wondering what the successful LBD team can come up with next.
Scan the QR code to visit Little Blue Deli’s Facebook page.
Jonathan is keen to stress how customer focussed his team is. “We’re always communicating with customers - we try to give them what they want and, in return, they keep coming back. Our menus change regularly so that we can provide them with seasonal variety and respond to their changing tastes.”

“There are some great new materials and products available and, here at Future, we’re making the most of them.”
Welcome to a world of outside living. It’s a bright future and even if it isn’t orange, it might be orangery, and for all you conservatory owners, life certainly doesn’t have to be so conservative.
FUTURE LIVING I’ve always been creative. Growing up, I loved looking at art in books and soon an interest in design blossomed. Over time the boundaries between the two blurred and, as I entered my teenage years, I became interested in sci-fi. Eagle books led to Marvel comics and so on - you get the picture. It was around this time that I picked up a book by Syd Mead an American illustrator and futurist.
“What’s a futurist?” I hear you ask (I certainly did at the time). Quite simply, Syd was paid an awful lot of money by big corporate companies to imagine what life would be like twenty, fifty or a hundred years into the future. That way the companies could gear they’re thinking, and their products, towards what they think people would like. What’s this got to do with conservatories and orangeries? Well, it’s lifestyle. We live in Wales which, even if it isn’t, feels like it’s the wettest place on earth 90% of the time so you’d wonder why more of us don’t embrace indoor/outdoor living by having a conservatory or orangery.
Scan the QR code for more information
Could it be the perceived expense? In the past, yes, but orangery and conservatory costs vary greatly depending on the design, size and materials used. We talk to Craig and Dina Harewood of Barry based Future Window Solutions and the word that keeps coming up is ‘affordable’.
“It’s all a matter of taste and what sits well with your property... We can help with the design and choosing interior finishes.”
Is an orangery affordable? DINA Oh yes. People will have you think that putting up an orangery requires a certain specialist skill-set but the truth is they’re really no more complicated than a conservatory or small extension. The design is relatively simple. What influences cost is the kind of materials used and, obviously, it ultimately comes down to size. What about conservatories? CRAIG We design and build a large number of conservatories. It’s all a matter of taste really and what sits well with your property. We’re doing a lot more conversions from conservatories to orangeries. After ten to fifteen years, most conservatories are looking a little tired but there are lots of ways we can refurbish them which includes converting them into an orangery. Honestly, I could show you images and you’d think we’d knocked a conservatory down and built an orangery in its place but it’s just had a cosmetic makeover. ❧ 17 ❧
What’s the best way to approach a new build or refurbishment? DINA Talk to us. We can sit down with customers and discuss the options and work through what is possible with the budget available. We can help with the design and choosing interior finishes. CRAIG These days you can even have a tile effect roof on your conservatory and a kitchen in your orangery. Anything is possible. There are some great new materials and products available and, here at Future, we’re making the most of them. They say the only way is up but, for the Ashton family, owning the house of their dreams became something of a sideways move. Vale Life takes a closer look.
GLASS
HOUSE We first came across this stunning home when it was featured on the cover of the September 2010 issue of Self Build & Design magazine so upon reading the article, I was surprised and intrigued to see the property was in South Wales. As someone who would ultimately like to self build, I couldn’t help but admire the design and creativity that had gone into its creation. Mike and Pam Ashton had hoped to extend their existing home sideways when the 1930’s bungalow next door came onto the market in 2005. With much deliberation, they came to the conclusion that completely replacing the bungalow with a brand new home was a far more practical solution. After exploring various ideas, including building an oak framed property, the couple chose to build in rendered block-work with a natural slate roof.
The creative design includes a basement garage, workshop and den. Bedrooms are on the ground floor with a gorgeous open plan living, dining and kitchen area on the first floor which opens on to front and rear balconies framed with nautical themed stainless steel balustrades.
Mark Nayler, Managing Director of Vellacine said, “This was a wonderful project to be associated with. The tower and high level windows are glazed with Pilkington Activ Blue - a stunning blue glass that combines self cleaning properties with solar control for a cooler interior.”
One of the most striking features of the build is the glass. There seems to be acres of it. Blue aluminium-framed doors and windows from Cardiff-based Vellacine, the window and conservatory centre, ensure the light floods in, and their views over the Bristol Channel to the North Devon coast beyond are uninterrupted. Owners Mike and Pam declared, “We chose Ocean Blue coloured aluminium frames, which complement the glass, and the self cleaning coating means we don’t have to worry about reaching the higher windows.”
Mark added, “We manufacture all our frames right here at our facility in Cardiff. We work with many different types of client from schools, architects and builders and some of our contracts are very large. However, projects on the scale of Mike and Pam’s are particularly enjoyable as they’re a little outside the norm and demonstrate that frames don’t have to be simply white or black. It gives us enormous satisfaction when we see features like the one in the magazine as you see the effect it has on the end user. Vellacine is delighted to have been associated with this project.” You can’t help being impressed with Mike and Pam’s house. The stylish combination of contemporary design and natural materials; slate, glass, wood and stainless steel, has created a beautiful contemporary home and one that will be an inspiration to other self build enthusiasts. PICTURE PERFECT Paul Cornish and Jac Williams are photographers with a passion for beautiful imagery. Whether it’s people, places or products, it’s all fuel for their creative fire. In this issue we focus on their beautiful wedding photography. How long have you been trading as wedding photographers? It’s been five fabulous years with our business building year on year. We are almost at wedding saturation point with limited availability for this year but it’s definitely worth giving us a call! What’s your style of photography? There are loads of influences in what we do, but essentially, we capture what our clients ask us to based on what they want at the end? If our couples want a very classical styled album then it makes sense to shoot more classical shots, if they want an avant garde style, we will shoot for that, modern, paparazzi, fashion... It simply depends on them.
Why should a couple book you? Trying to be modest here but, we are really good at what we do. We give an awesome package for a reasonable price tag. We train constantly to improve our skills and thus our offering to our clients. Our unique selling point is that even at our very high level, we don’t charge based on time but on the end result, we don’t have a complicated time based pricing system. What advice would you give to a bride looking for a photographer? Other than come straight to us first, look for someone who understands light. If you see images with bright noses and dark eyes, don’t book them and if you see people with horizons going through their heads or if you feel unsure about the person you are talking to, don’t book them.
How do you discover what style will suit them? By talking to them, discovering who they are, we probably spend around 4 hours with our couples chatting prior to their day. Every wedding is unique, we ensure our quality and standards are high then use our expertise and knowledge to interpret what our couples want.
Other than that, it’s wise to consider a professional photographer with insurance and backup kit who can show you complete albums of good quality work. They’ll probably do a good job for you. You should still book us if we are available though!

LIFE’S A BEACH
LENITA-XTG.COM, £52.50 Great bold pattern unlike anything else I have seen on the highstreet. You’ll really stand out from the crowd in this bikini!
The summer has finally arrived and with it has come the sun! Hurray! So some of you will be taking holidays soon and others will be planning trips to the beach or just sunbathing in the garden. The one thing you’ll all be needing is a swimsuit - that goes for the gentlemen too! So, for this fashion feature we’ve chosen some of the best beach wear from the high street and some independent online suppliers. The big theme with swimwear for the ladies this season is vintage styled suits. Keep an eye out for these as they are very flattering on all sizes. Or if vintage isn’t you, go for something bold and floral. That’s very much on trend this summer. For men, bright and bold patterned trunks are everywhere, so be brave and show off your fun side in a pair of these. Obviously you can’t just wear a bathing suit all the time so we’ve also found a selection of summer accessories to wear too. Try donning a trilby or straw hat (that goes for men too!), a pair of comfy espadrilles or flip flops, an ethnic kaftan or comfy loose tshirt, some aviator shades or catseye sunnies, and don’t forget the big beach bag to pack it all in! But, most of all, wear stuff you’re comfortable with, enjoy yourself and, of course, don’t forget to put the lotion in the basket!

Years ago when someone mentioned going to a festival, the image that came to mind was of grungey hippies or hardcore rockers but, ever since Kate Moss made festivalgoing popular, everyone wants to be at one and, more importantly, be seen there. Festival sites aren’t as bad as they used to be either. These days you can expect a bit more luxury – think glamping with yurts and boudoir bed and breakfasts. But what to wear? We don’t all have Kate Moss’s body or her money, so what does one wear to a festival these days? Hopefully we’ve given you a few ideas. What we can’t guarantee is the sun, so you might end up covered in mud anyway. Isn’t that part of the fun though? Here’s hoping there’ll be some sunshine and you won’t get mud in your sandwiches!

When Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Fostering and Adoption teams say you really can change the course of a young person’s life – they mean it! Rebecca, 30, tells us how she thrived with her adopted family.
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS ■ There are 49 children aged from 0 to
eight waiting to be adopted in Rhondda Cynon Taf. ■ Twenty of them are aged two and
under and nine of them have a brother or sister who should be adopted alongside them.
What adoptive parents say “Following years of trying to conceive, we decided to become adoptive parents and began work with our social worker, who has since become a strong contact in our lives.”
■ Each of them has been removed their
biological families, through no fault of their own, and many are affected by the issues that led to them being taken into care in the first place. Rebecca, 30, tells us how she thrived with her adopted family. Every person who is adopted has a different story about how they came to be removed from their birth parents. There are just so many reasons why the family unit can break down. But it is never the fault of the babies and children who are removed from their birth parents. For me, my mother could not care for me and I was hospitalised due to malnutrition and went on to spend many of my first years in hospital due to ill health caused by neglect. My life was pretty grim. I was placed in care aged six months and fostered by the family who went on to adopt me. They treated me as their own and gave me the care, support and confidence I needed. They were always very open with me, they never kept secrets and I have always understood everything about my family situation. My adoptive parents told me I was special and they’d chosen me and that was how I always felt. They had chosen to be my mum and dad, and also had three biological children of their own and been foster carers for many years before I arrived in their care. In fact, the incredible work they did was passed down a generation as their daughter, my adoptive sister, was unable to have children herself, so, eight years ago, adopted three siblings.
But each of them is also a child, with boundless energy and limitless imaginations. They have birthdays and dream of a cake topped with candles, the chance to twirl in their princess party dress or thunder down the road on their new bike. They have energy - lots of it - and a penchant for Peppa Pig. They want to run and jump, sing and shout, cuddle up and read a story or tear around the football pitch until their legs can take no more. They want a family and the chance for an upbringing that gives them the best start in life. Some people adopt because they choose to, others because they cannot have biological children, whatever their reason, the decision to adopt is never an easy one. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is realistic and knows adoption is not for everyone. But it is also certain there are many people out there who, if they took the first step and found out more, would thrive as adoptive parents. There are huge amounts of information and support available at every step of the way, from information evenings and chats with those who have already adopted before you make a decision, to ongoing support, training and family days. ❧ 42 ❧
“We will be honest and say the process was personal and took some time, which was daunting, but that was forgotten when we were told we had been approved and our daughter was placed with us.” “Months of anticipation became years of joy and we cannot begin to explain how wonderful the last three years of our lives have been and how our days have flown by with laughter and excitement.” “Of course it has not been easy and our daughter has presented challenges, but then, life is not easy and all children present challenges. “Our advice would be to really consider adoption, don’t give up and take strength and advice from the professionals who help you every step of the way – the support we were given was second to none, enabling us to become confident. “We have since adopted our little girl’s biological brother, bringing the siblings back together and making our family complete.”
If you are interested in being part of a child’s memories please contact the Adoption Team, or visit the website for further information.

To those unfamiliar with the Valleys, they can still evoke images of scarred hillsides dominated by spoil heaps and waste tips. Nowadays, as residents know, the hills are largely green again, rivers full of fish run clean, such that visitors are often taken aback by the beautiful countryside that envelopes the towns and villages of The Valleys. And places to see and explore nature are close at hand…
TAKE A WALK ON
THE WILD SIDE The Valleys will have a new National Nature Reserve this summer. Aberbargoed Grasslands in the Rhymney Valley is already designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) of national and European importance. Its Purple Moor grass and rush pasture habitat is increasingly rare with more than 90% of it lost across Britain over the last 100 years. It supports a huge variety of wildlife including a colony of rare Marsh Fritillary butterflies. Subject to the approval of the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), the reserve is likely to be launched during Wales Biodiversity Week, commencing on June 11, with a series of community events, including a butterfly parade involving local schools. A new education centre is being created at the site and specially developed apps for iPhones and Android phones will help visitors understand and enjoy the reserve and the wildlife.
Before the official launch, Caerphilly CBC countryside rangers are hosting a party of nearly 50 ‘Ecogardes’ from northern France and volunteer rangers from Belgium at the grasslands to undertake activities as part of the trans-European WECAN project in which the Valleys Regional Park initiative is a partner.
Marsh Fritillary Butterfly Primarily a wetland species as its name suggests, these beautiful butterflies have been declining in numbers in recent years as their natural habitats have become increasingly scarce. However, in areas of the valleys, they are more than holding their own. Adults emerge in the middle of May, reaching a peak in early June. Image courtesy of © Cumbria Butterfly Conservation
Essential Nature
Just a few miles to the north of the grasslands and the town of Bargoed, Parc Cwm Darran, one of the Valleys’ wonderful Country Parks, is a great example of how former industrial sites have been reclaimed for nature and recreational purposes. The location of the former Ogilvie Colliery is now a tranquil haven where two lakes have been created, surrounded by thousands of trees. The park’s wonderful walking and cycling trails allow visitors to reconnect with nature and wildlife, especially at Cwmllywdrew Meadows, a Local Nature Reserve within the park, where Barn Owls hunt and Pied Flycatchers nest.

Tucked out of sight just off the ‘Heads of the Valleys’ Road to the east of Brynmawr is the Cwm Clydach National Nature Reserve, which recently featured as one of the ‘Top 50 Valleys Essentials’ by ‘Rough Guide to Wales’ author Mike Parker. The reserve is managed by CCW as part of the wider Cwm Clydach Woodlands SAC. Beech trees cling to the side of the deep limestone gorge cut by the Afon Clydach, which resonates in the summer to a symphony of songs from birds including the Nuthatch, Green and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. A new cycleway, which links to the Sustrans’ Valleys Cycle Network, passes through the reserve along the route of the old railway line.

Just off the Ebbw Fawr valley is Cwm Merddog, home to the Silent Valley reserve. Within the woodlands at Silent Valley, the remnants of the old dramline that transported coal from the drift mines on the hillsides can still be seen. Gwent Wildlife Trust and its partners have done a sterling job in managing the reserve for both conservation purposes and the enjoyment of visitors. The Trust runs the newly-built Environment Resource Centre nearby on the site of the former steel works at Ebbw Vale and is certainly well worth a visit as well. In addition to its magnificent variety of ferns, wild orchids and helleborines, Silent Valley claims the highest-altitude beech woodlands in mainland Britain. The adventurous may wish to check if they are higher than those perched on the punchbowl above Cwm Tyleri, just north of the local nature reserve at Cwmtillery Lakes, one of three such reserves along with Beaufort Woodlands and Parc Nant-y-Waun on the new Ebbw Fach Trail, a 16 km trail that links fourteen community-run greenspaces. The endlessly-fascinating contrast and relationship between man’s activities and nature often enhances the appeal of The Valleys’ wildlife sites. One of the many regeneration projects and
initiatives that are helping to transform the valleys is that at Cyfarthfa Park and Castle restoring the old Tramway and the historic Leat, which supplied water to the famous Cyfarthfa ironworks. Here a new walkway will form part of a heritage trail between Cyfarthfa and the Taf Fechan Nature Reserve. The reserve is part of the Cwm Taf Fechan Woodland SSSI where the fast-flowing Taf Fechan river cuts through close to limestone cliffs. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales has leased the site since 1975 from Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, with whom they jointly run and manage it, and recently they have appointed its first ever full-time warden to look after it. Just north of Swansea, close to the village of Craig Cefn Parc, the RSPB runs a nature reserve, also named Cwm Clydach. This has two special nature trails: a short one, which is suitable for pushchairs, and a longer one with steep, rocky sections. You might see spotted flycatchers and redstarts. Dippers and Grey Wagtails frequent the waters of the Clydach River whilst majestic Red Kites, with their iconic forked tails, can often be seen gliding overhead in their distinctive graceful fashion. If you fancy a walk on the wild side near you this summer, you know where to go. ❧ 47 ❧
The magnificent crags of Pen Pych at the top of the Rhondda Fawr, one of only a few flat-topped spur mountains in Europe, where buzzards and peregrines often soar on the thermals. Just to the south of Pen Pych is the fantastic SSSI woodland at Cwm Saerbren. Notable for its wonderful geological features, the site is accessible from Treherbert railway station.

Natasha Jenkins Photography There aren’t many people in work who can say that they love what they do and that they have turned their life-long passion into their dream job. This is the case for Natasha Jenkins who turned her love of photography into the thriving business it is today. How long have you been established? Two years, although I have been taking photographs for as long as I can remember. How far will you travel? I cover all of South Wales, but I am happy to travel as far as is needed. Why do people come to you? I find that being a female photographer helps in many situations, especially in weddings, maternity and baby shoots. Being a woman, I find that clients tend to be more at ease, especially in more personal bridal and maternity shoots. As a mum of two young children, I know the importance of patience and have gained a natural affinity with children and babies which really helps with family portraits. ❧ 52 ❧
Many people don’t like their photograph being taken. How do you make clients feel at ease? I take the time to get to know my clients and ask them lots of questions about the style of photography they want from me. To get the quality of photography that’s required needs a warm and personal service. I have gained an excellent reputation from my clients, all of whom have said that I have given them amazing photographs to treasure. We’ve all enjoyed the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and are looking forward to donning red, white and blue for the Olympics. When someone mentions nautical style, it’s usually defined using the words classic, timeless, or iconic. Picture seaside vacations and leisurely weekends. Maybe that’s why nautical style seems to keep popping up, year after year. You may not be a veteran sailor with a year round tan but if you stick to the basic rules, you can work the nautical look this summer.

There’s been a lot of press about sunbeds recently. Most of it around their over use by younger people but, as sensible users will testify, a sunbed can have a very positive effect on your life.
GOLDEN BROWN The sunbeds look very hi-tech and impressive! We’re no ordinary tanning studio. Looking around, I think you’ll agree that we’re a bit special. We’ve invested heavily in the very latest technology and our Ergoline Esprit sunbeds offer a deeper, darker tan safely. If you’re in a hurry our VersaSpa spray tan, applied by our fully qualified stylists, offers a choice of three golden tans in minutes. Or, if you’d prefer not to undress in front of a stylist, we have the fully automated VersaSpa Curve Tan System.
With the UK’s changeable weather, the opportunity to top up a holiday tan or just gain a little colour is, at best, hit and miss. So, if you’re going to choose a tanning studio, it had better be a good one. We talk to owner of The Tanning Studio, Denis Evans, about what makes a good tanning studio great. What do you think sets The Tan Studio apart from other establishments? I always say we’re serious about what we do and what we offer. We take our legal and regulatory obligations extremely seriously the service and safety of our customers is incredibly important to us. Customers can rest assured they’re in good hands.
We’re a one-stop shop for sunbed, spray tan and ancillary treatments. Some people like spray tans, some like sunbeds, so we offer both. We also stock the excellent Herbal Life weight management programme and the complete Gelish Nails range plus the innovative, new Beauty Angel treatment. The mix of products and services is designed to make you look and feel good. Can you tell us more about the Beauty Angel treatment? It’s an amazing new red light (non UV) technology. The light is absorbed by the skin’s cells and stimulates collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production. The benefits are the reduction of fine lines and the skin is tautened and looks visibly smoother. This natural light lift means no needles and is side-effect free. The treatment is supported by a comprehensive range of cosmetics that deliver stunning results which help create a more youthful look. We’re excited to offer this amazing treatment here. It’s proving very popular as word gets around! The Tan Studio 6-8 Queen Street Bridgend CF31 1HX 01656 750633 www.thetanstudio.co.uk

Blu Hair Design Style and substance When staff are well trained and enjoy where they work, this comes through in the way stylists work with their customers and the atmosphere in the salon. This can certainly be said for Blu Hair Design in Penarth. We spoke to owners Alexis and Hayley about one of their stylists, Leanne Elliston’s recent achievements. Tell us about Leanne. Leanne has been with us for over two years and she is a great ambassador for our salon. She has recently achieved NVQ level 2 standard and has been promoted to the creative cutting team here at Blu. She came to us on a part time basis while she was in college and decided to stay with us when she passed her exams. What position does she hold at the salon? We have a competitive tier system here with artistic directors, senior designers and stylists. Leanne is one of our stylists. She has built up her own clientele and quite a few clients are requesting that she work with them. You have a happy team here. Yes, this is a friendly salon. Customer care is vitally important to us and if our staff are happy, then they are able to offer better client customer care. We believe we offer the highest standards of hairdressing and we’re all proud of Leanne’s achievements.

How long has the practice been established? The practice is one of the oldest practices in Cardiff, established some 70 years ago. It was relocated from the city centre to its present location in the 1980’s. We have been the owners and operators since 2001.

For Design Director at Leekes, Terry Jones, choosing his new home was easy. With a unique history, beautiful surroundings and spacious living proportions, he tells Vale Life why apartment living really does stack up.
PARK LIFE What makes your home so special? Hensol Castle itself was built in the 1700's on the strength of the industrial revolution which instantly means the area is steeped in history which adds to the magical feeling of the beautiful surroundings. The apartment I live in used to be part of the old concert hall. Why were you drawn to the apartments? Hensol grounds are unique and a one off - there are also specimen plants from all over the world which encourages visitors as some of the trees are over 200 years old, brought over from Canada and Egypt by the landscape architects of the day. Having always lived in towns and cities with walled gardens I never had any time to garden due to family life and my career. Now living at Hensol means I can appreciate the parks and experience having an outdoor space as well as enjoying alfresco living.
What does apartment living offer you that living in a house doesn't? ‘I love living on one floor – it’s so easy. And the conversion is modern and energy saving with good heating and insulation systems. Aside from modern conveniences, the apartments are next to two golf courses - the Vale Lake course and the Wales National course – which is perfect as I’m a keen golfer, as well as having been part of the design team that created the courses!
What are the key elements of apartment living you love the most? Apartment living really does offer an easy lifestyle, but moving from a big house to an apartment can be an issue as you adjust to less space – I had lived in a four bedroom Victorian house for 28 years, but you simply have to utilise your space effectively and be very disciplined – the rules are no clutter! But this is how we should all live: simply and well.
How have you personalised your space? As a big lover of open plan spaces I opted for this type of layout; I don’t like separate rooms and wanted to really embrace modern apartment living. I chose wooden floor in some rooms and ceramic tiled floors in others along with underfloor heating which is the most efficient and green way of heating the room. Here it draws heat out of the grounds of Hensol by a heat pump which supports the heating system. Having high ceilings, big spaces, open rooms and no carpets makes the apartment a healthier space as air flows easily.

People say that kitchen trends follow fashion trends and, whilst this may be true, are we all slaves to fashion? We ask Steve Bloom, Director and designer at Spacefittingfurniture.
FORM & FUNCTION
“Yes and no,” says Steve. “What it’s really about is that people’s lifestyles have changed. Not only do we all want a beautifully designed kitchen, but it needs to be about ‘convenience meets multifunctionality’.
“Yes, it needs to look good.” Steve smiles. I think I’ve touched a design nerve. But no, he’s away again. “When you’re looking at your kitchen all of the time, that’s important of course. But…”
We all tend to hang on to things we don’t actually need. Rational’s philosophy is to help life in the kitchen become less cluttered. It’s all about efficiency. It’s about making your life, as the user, much easier.”
The finished design needs to take into account how much time is spent in it and who will be spending time in it. If it’s a family with kids, how old are they? Does the family have big dogs? Will it be used for family meals and entertaining? Will the family want to watch television or listen to music in it? All of these things come into play.”
I sense I’m in for a form versus function fight and I’m about to lose horribly.
Steve pulls out one of the deep drawers to demonstrate his point. He’s got a point actually. Everything about the Rational Kitchens sings style but there’s also a usability about these kitchens that says someone very clever and creative has sat down and spent time thinking through every detail.
“Isn’t it all about superficial design these days?” I ask. I’m thinking minimalistic super white handle-less creations that no-one’s allowed to touch unless they’ve been sterilised.
“I always use this analogy; when you’re buying a car, you don’t set out to look at a green car, you look for the car first and then pick the colour. It needs to be functional. That’s why we sell Rational Kitchens. Not only do they look good but the company has really thought things through. Storage units that can house all of your pots, pans and essentials that pull out so that you can actually reach them all of them, all of the time. ❧ 62 ❧
“They’ve also thought a lot about the materials they use such as new woods ceramics and slate” says Steve, “Which makes my job more fulfilling as I have a much greater palette of resources to refer to when I’m designing.”
“Change the mood and style of your kitchen.” It’s strange isn’t it, you start having a conversation with someone about kitchen style trends and the next thing you’re completely hooked by what you’re seeing and hearing. And that’s the great thing about Steve Bloom. Yes, you’re sat in a beautiful kitchen showroom surrounded by gorgeous kitchens but, listening to Steve, you sense he has a real passion for design. “Look at this!” He smiles again. “People like something a bit different; we’ve introduced wall-mounted base units that look like they’re suspended in the air, adding a contemporary sense of free-flowing space and those, combined with the virtually ceilinghigh wall units, genius - they just look gorgeous. And they can easily be integrated into dining areas and living spaces too.”
“It’s all about efficiency. It’s about making your life much easier.” I’m hooked, I have to say, to the point where I’m practically reaching for my cheque book to write out a deposit! “So what about colour?” I hear myself asking. “Colour plays a huge part in the kitchen,” Steve enthuses. “Remember, extreme colours are very tying but adding a splash of colour to neutrals and woods with art or fabrics, you can change the mood and style of your new kitchen not only to current trends but also to your own taste and even with the seasons. Your kitchen should never date!” ❧ 63 ❧

If you’re fortunate enough to have a little set aside to invest, and you like the finer things in life, then there could probably be no better investment than classic, pre-loved timepieces. Timeless brands such as Cartier, Frank Muller, Jaeger, Patek Philippe and Chopard will not only hold their value but will, in most cases, increase in worth over time.
A TIMELY INVESTMENT A new watch, like almost all luxury items, depreciates in value by up to 30% after you first wear it. Pre-owned classic watches, however, will hold their value. Over time they can be worth even more than the original purchase cost. With due care and regular maintenance, a quality watch will last you a lifetime. David Edwards Jewellers in Cardiff’s Royal Arcade has many more watches to choose from. They also purchase watches and welcome part exchange. Whether you’re a seller or a buyer of classic, pre-owned watches, there’s no reason to go anywhere else. Whether it’s a venue for the wedding of your dreams, a superb location to watch the Rugby Internationals, enjoy an afternoon tea, an evening of jazz, dinner, or as an arts venue, Park House, overlooking the gardens of the National Museum of Wales, is a stylish and elegant setting.
OPEN HOUSE There have been many changes at Park House in recent months. Owners Adam and Claire Pledger have a passion for good food, good wine and good service and, being able to offer all of this, and much more in this beautiful Grade 1 listed, four storey, gothic residential building designed by William Burges, is a real pleasure for them. Once a private members club, Park House is now open for all to enjoy. Burges Restaurant At the heart of Park House is the traditional Burges Restaurant, overlooking the gardens of the National Museum Wales through its glorious multi panelled gothic windows. Named after the building’s famous architect, William Burges who was a leading exponent of Gothic Revival, the quirky, gothic–inspired features, oak panelling and ornamental detail of Burges’ work have been combined with contemporary tones to create an ambience of sophisticated luxury.
Adam and Claire have spared no expense in developing a superb brigade. To complement their team led by the immensely talented Head Chef, Jonathan Edwards, the couple have brought in Michelin-starred Welsh chef, Roger Jones, to mentor the team and it’s clear from this decision that they have their eye on the great prize for The Park House. “We want to redefine the standard of gourmet food in Cardiff,” says Adam. Roger Jones has cooked for the Royal family and currently owns the highlyacclaimed Restaurant Of The Year, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn in Wiltshire and brings a wealth of talent and experience as part of his ambition to raise culinary standards in the Welsh capital. Roger is clearly enthusiastic about his role. “The aim is to bring the highestquality Michelin-starred cuisine to Cardiff,” he says. “Something that, sadly, has been missing from Cardiff for far too long,”
It seems that the ambition and the brigade’s efforts are paying off with tables already selling out. Roger adds, “The Park House has always been my preferred choice when I’m home watching rugby internationals. We have big ambitions to put Cardiff on the international culinary map and I’m really looking forward to working with Jonathan and his talented team at The Park House.” Roger has always sourced Welsh products while at The Harrow and it will clearly be easier to do that in Cardiff. “I use lobsters from Little Haven, Pembrokeshire, lamb from Cardiganshire, ducks from Carmarthenshire, Welsh Black beef from Ceredigion and spider crabs from West Wales,” he says proudly. Jones spent his early years working for the British Government as well as the Royal Family and was the youngest chef to run State Banquets at the tender age of 21. He’s cooked for Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street and was awarded his first Michelin star in 2006 which he’s retained every year since. Co-owner, Claire Pledger, said, “We’re delighted to have such an incredible team on board. Roger’s influence combined with the creative talents of Jonathan and his team are giving us something to shout about. We’re so proud of what we have all achieved.”
❧ 74 ❧
“The menus are seasonal and feature a gourmet tasting menu...”
Roger Jones (left) and Jonathan Edwards
Adam added, “Roger will redesign the menus to feature some of his signature dishes, including a luxury fish finger made with lobster and also assist in building a world-class wine collection at The Park House.” The Park House menu is seasonal and features a gourmet tasting menu showcasing their signature dishes. An excellent value set lunch menu coupled with lunch and dinner à la carte menus leave the diner spoiled for choice. Vanilla Rooms Vanilla Rooms at Park House is a place to relax and unwind in chic and opulent surroundings. The Vanilla Rooms is a hip and cool cocktail bar situated in the basement of this stunning building. It is beautifully appointed and the decor is chic, comfortable and sophisticated, providing an exclusive retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Located on the lower ground floor of the Club, it’s the perfect place to spend an evening enjoying fabulous cocktails especially prepared by Christos Kyriakidis, the renowned mixologist.
The Terrace The outside terrace area has had a makeover with additional seating for 40 people, parasols, wind sails and a dedicated terrace food and drink menu, along with table service on Fridays and Saturdays, dependant on the weather. There’s an expression, ‘Like a kid in a sweetshop’ and it perfectly describes the feeling you get when you step into The Crazy Humbug in Barry.
SWEET DREAMS
If you live in Barry, you may already be a fan of The Crazy Humbug on Holton Road. Owner, Ashley Pryczka has created a haven of confectionary for anyone with a sweet tooth. Shelves upon shelves of jars jam-packed with mouthwatering chocolates, humbugs and suckable sweets sold by the quarter ounce just like they used to be. Ashley has recreated the spirit of sweetshop nostalgia with over 830 different sweets like sherbet pips, toffees, chocolate raisins and has certainly found his niche. Unsurprisingly, most of Ashley’s customers are adults wanting to relive their school days.
“Good old-fashioned service and tons and tons of sweets, just like the good old days.” After all, who can forget the classic sherbet lemon - the boiled sweet with a tangy, fizzy sherbet centre, coconut teacakes, sherbet pips, toffee bonbons and butterscotch or liquorice gums? Fast becoming a thing of the past, it’s such a treat to find this retro-style candy store offering sweets galore all under one roof, including a large Pick & Mix section, seasonal novelties, tins of biscuits, tray toffees, Belgian chocolates and three flavours of the popular Welsh humbugs Lossin Dant. When Chameleon’s owners say that they’ve tried to break the mould of what customers expect and receive when they visit one of their venues, they clearly mean it and the end result is impressive.
SIX OF THE BEST When you consider the two older venues, The North Star and The Vulcan used to be traditional ‘spit and sawdust’ establishments, Chameleon’s re-invention is nothing short of miraculous.
The Potted Pig has become one of Cardiff’s ‘must eat at’ restaurants with a waiting list to prove it and if meat is your thing, then The Meating Place you’ll be in heaven.
with Crystal, we have created an exceptional venue that rewards customers with a unique experience.”
These pubs are now thriving with a mix of locals, students and families looking for good food and drinks at reasonable prices. The beautifully converted North Star, a boutique styled Victorian pub out on North Road completes the trio. The Mocka Club and Café on Cardiff’s popular Mill Lane, in the Café Quarter, is a completely different offering. Perfect for breakfast or lunch and, as evening arrives, dinner or cocktails. Stylish and sensual, Mocka’s personality changes as the sun goes down.
If you’re looking for a nightclub to rival those in London, then Chameleon’s Crystal Boutique Nightclub will surely satisfy your needs. Chameleon’s management team are keen to stress that providing a stylish establishment with great music, drink and all the ingredients that make up a great nightclub are nothing without ensuring that guests are relaxed and enjoy a safe environment. Jahan Abedi, Managing Director, says, “We want all our customers to enjoy a hassle-free environment. Customer safety is paramount to us and we believe that,
With these six very venues, all types of events and occasions can be catered for; corporate events and presentations, product launches, birthdays, private parties, after show parties, business lunches - full AV facilities are available. Jahan adds, “We can tailor packages for a group or company, such as dinner at The Potted Pig or The Meating Place followed by cocktails at The Mocka Lounge, finishing your night at our beautiful boutique nightclub, Crystal. We’re passionate about customer service. We enjoy working with our corporate customers as much as we enjoy seeing all of our private customers. ”

The North Star
Centrally located on Cardiff’s High Street within 100m of both Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium The Potted Pig is one of Cardiff’s must-visit restaurants.
Crystal Boutique Lounge & Bar was created as a hideaway and designed to be a haven for the more discerning clientele; a place to enjoy the simple pleasures - great music, sublime drinks and interesting company.
A beautiful converted Victorian pub on North Road is the home of Chamelon Group’s boutique styled North Star.
Opened in 2011, The Potted Pig has settled comfortably into its home in a former bank vault serving a varied and constantly changing menu of modern British food with a few French and New-York grill inspired influences thrown in for good measure. The owners commitment to a truly seasonal menu means using as many locally sourced products from independent and local suppliers as possible. The drinks menu is carefully selected to match and they carry an excellent range of independently sourced wines as well as a fantastic array of bottled lagers, ales, ciders and spirits including an unrivalled selection of bespoke gins. 27 High Street (underneath Zizzi) Cardiff CF10 1PU 029 2022 4817 info@thepottedpig.com www.thepottedpig.com
Its intimate layout is sumptuously decorated thanks to a remodel in January of 2012. Crystal Prides itself on its personal touch - one-to-one service that the owners suggest you just won’t find anywhere else in the city. On arrival, you’re greeted by a door host who will arrange entry for you and your guests and, if you have tables reserved, waitresses escort you, take your orders and get you settled in.
Complete with open heated courtyard with a barbecue pit for private summer events, a large open function room that can hold 38 diners in one sitting, as well as a separate restaurant area for 60 guests. Regular live music complements an open kitchen serving modern British, Welsh and European dishes sourced from local suppliers and growers.
All of Crystal’s tables are waitress serviced throughout the night, allowing you a hassle-free night in extravagant surroundings.
The North Star is perfect for evenings out with friends as it can accommodate larger bookings without affecting the more intimate areas for those that want somewhere a little quieter. There is also a private bar for functions of up to 60 people tucked up and out of the way for guests who want to enjoy their event away from hustle and bustle of a busy Pub and Restaurant.

The Vulcan Lounge
Mocka Club & Café
This shrine to the carnivore on St. Mary’s Street is a meat lover’s paradise but don’t be fooled, The Meating Place also preserves relationships by offering an excellent range of vegetarian meals.
The Vulcan Lounge used to be known as The End, which was more of a spit and sawdust student place. The revamped Vulcan really is quite lovely.
Want to escape the hustle and bustle of the office, or step away from a long day shopping for a realxing coffee or a light bite? Step into Mocka.
The decor is very smart and the staff friendly and helpful. It has a good mix of students and locals and a good beer garden which is especially welcome in summer. It’s good if it’s cold outside as it has plenty of halogen lamps to help you keep warm. The Vulcan have regular live music nights, and the food is excellent and they have a good selection of beers and regulars will be delighted that the pool tables are back.
Daytime, Mocka’s relaxed atmosphere is perfect for a catch up with friends or just some ‘you time’ and delivers a tantalising blend of speciality coffees, light bites and classy cocktails. As night draws in, its more seductive side reveals itself combining smooth sounds, indulgent cocktails and unrivalled service. Mocka is available for private parties and special occasions and is perfectly located in Cardiff’s Café Quarter.
This popular restaurant has an excellent repututation for its skewers menu and, trust me, if you’ve not tried them, you really must. Smokey, luxurious, meaty this is the place if lamb, chicken or beef are your thing. An excellent selection of fish and vegetarian dishes are also on the menu and The Meating Place prides itself on using many local and South Wales suppliers to source its ingredients wherever possible. If, like many businesses, yours is struggling with the downturn perhaps now would be a good time to re-consider your overheads. The Business Centre may have the solution with affordable office space.
JUST THE BUSINESS With financial markets affected by the Eurozone crisis and growing acceptance that 2012 will be tough for all sectors, some businesses in the Vale are taking precautions to ensure they can minimise exposure to risk where they possibly can.
Taking out traditional ten, fifteen or twenty year leases does not allow you much flexibility which is why so many companies are looking to a more flexible and risk adverse route. In addition, as of April 2008, companies have had the added motivation to avoid having unused office space on their books as they now have to pay full business rates on office space left empty for more than three months. One way they can avoid this is to operate their business from The Business Centre as they can expand and contract to reflect their income.
Other benefits for clients to enjoy at The Business Centre are, access to business storage and support services such as conference and meeting room hire, secretarial and admin assistance without the need for employing extra staff. These services are also available to companies who are not resident at The Business Centre. For further information please contact James Mason on 0800 6349920 and discover how being at The Business Centre during a recession is the best place to be. James says, “Not only can we promise to save your business money on your running costs but we can also introduce you to other likeminded business people who may want to do business with you.”
One company that did just that are Vita Financial. Director, Barry Pappin said, “We recently decided to expand and recruit new staff but understood that we would need the extra office space to accommodate our expansion. The Business Centre provided the option to expand within a 48 hour period with next to no downtime from our working day. The option to upgrade and downsize has provided us with the flexibility that every company needs, with the team at the centre taking away all the headaches of any office move.” For those businesses still wanting to start up in a recession or for existing businesses that want to reduce and fix their operating costs, then taking office space in The Business Centre is an ideal option. Low move-in costs, short lead times and access to up to date IT and telecoms equipment and services, which can be rented by the week with no capital outlay are some of the benefits.

ESSENTIALLY HAWKES There’s no denying that the reason why Hawkes Essentials stays ahead of the game is that owner Russell Scott-Lawson is always on the lookout for the best brands on the market to offer his clients.
Among his latest acquisitions are Eton shirts. With a heritage which dates back to 1928, the fine shirts, which have an emphasis on genuine craftsmanship, combined with cutting edge weaving technology and a unique finishing process, are second to none. Exclusive to Wales, Russell knows that once a customer has worn one of these shirts, they’ll be back for more. For those not familiar with Eton shirts, let us tell you about what makes them stand out from the crowd. For business shirts, which form the centrepiece of Eton’s shirt collections, it’s the wide variety of exciting patterns and colours, the three body shapes with a number of cuffs and collars which ensures an impeccable fit and the special spinning, weaving and finishing process and the fact that they only use the highest quality cotton which guarantees that the shirts look good all day.
The summer shirts are less formal but no less sharp, are impossibly comfortable and will take you seamlessly from a perfect day of relaxation to a glittering night of fun. The patterns vary from plains to classic stripes and multi stripes and from small checks to medium checks. Eton’s signature attention to detail features piping inside the front placket, coloured button thread and imaginatively colour coordinated buttons. Main collars are the classic button down and a moderate cutaway with detachable collar bones. The colour schemes are carefully chosen to provide a feeling of leisure. It will come as no surprise that a proud Eton wearer among millions of people all over the world is the impeccably dressed, Bond superstar, Roger Moore. These shirts work just as well for the more mature gentleman with style as the more youthful male model as pictured here. ❧ 86 ❧

What sets Nucleus Healthcare apart from other providers is the ongoing support from their team of weight loss treatment experts and the care and support given by their fully trained nurses from initial consultation until well after any procedure.
PATIENT CARE Being overweight, particularly if you fall under the ‘obese’ category, has many health risks associated with it. For many people, carrying extra weight is not just an aesthetic issue - it doesn’t only affect a person’s physical appearance, but can have long-lasting negative effects on a person’s health as well. People who are obese have an increased likelihood of getting other, sometimes fatal diseases, including heart disease, sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and certain cancers. Research shows that obesity reduces life expectancy and contributes greatly to depression and anxiety. We all know that we should eat well and take regular exercise to stay a healthy weight but, for some, this is just too difficult and they need extra help. This is where Nucleus Healthcare can help. They offer an adjustable gastric balloon, which is non-surgical and is recommended for a maximum of twelve months.
“All of our patients are offered a unique care package...”
A N U R S E ’S P ER SP EC TIVE
We spoke to nurse, Jessica Evans about the care and support that is offered by Nucleus to each patient undertaking the procedure. What do you think that Nucleus Healthcare offers its patients that other providers do not? In 2010 we set up a patient support group for gastric balloon patients in order to motivate and inspire each individual throughout their weight loss journey. The Nucleus programme is comprehensive and covers all aspects of weight loss leading to a healthier lifestyle and happier future.
“If a patient has the slightest concern or query, there’s a friendly, supportive and knowledgeable person at the end of the phone.”
Is this type of support programme unique to Nucleus? All of our patients are offered a unique care package by dedicated members of the multidisciplinary team at Nucleus. We find this greatly increases the success of the procedure.
After the procedure, patients are given a follow-up with the dietician and consultant. They are contacted by a nurse initially every day, who gives advice and reassurance until the patient is settled post procedure. There is also a point of contact for patients requiring further information and advice so, if a patient has the slightest concern or query, there’s a friendly, supportive and knowledgeable person at the end of the phone.
Please describe the process On initial consultation, patients are greeted by a nurse and given the opportunity to ask questions regarding their weight loss programme. We strive to provide continuity of care which builds a nurse-patient relationship and helps to reduce any patient anxieties.
How soon do patients see results? Each patient is different but they are encouraged to weigh every two weeks and to attend the patient support group monthly and given the opportunity to attend cognitive behavioural therapy. The actual procedure is a catalyst for change. For most patients, the change is not only physical but a mental one and is certainly emotional too. As part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team at Nucleus Healthcare we provide an outstanding level of care to each and every patient. Tell us about the aftercare? After removal of the gastric balloon, patients are encouraged to continue using our services here at Nucleus Healthcare, such as our weight clinic and support group in order to maintain weight loss. The twelve month programme meets individual needs, provides on-going support and encouragement required to lose weight and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

WHAT PATIEN T S SAY...
A Nucleus patient shares her experience I had a gastric balloon fitted in July 2011. I had tried to get a balloon or band with NHS but was told no money was available in Wales. My health was not good, I couldn’t walk far and I was breathless but since having the procedure things have improved greatly and I have lost 7st 6lb so far. From day one Nucleus has been there for me in every way. After having the balloon fitted, they phoned me every day - sometimes two or three times to check that I was fine. They have been really supportive all the way. I attend the support group monthly. About ten people come along each month and it has been a great help. We laugh, cry and help each other. After the balloon is taken out I will still be able to get support for another year. It is very hard to put into words how I feel. Some people seem to think I should be excited all the time but I have had a year to work through it. It’s the simple things that take my breath away - we call them plusses. For example now I can cross my legs for the first time in ages, I can turn over in bed without the bed groaning, I have worn trousers today for the first time in my life and I can buy clothes from shops instead of catalogues. My health is still not perfect and some of the things will never go away but I feel so much better. The one thing I used to want to be was invisible. I didn’t want to have people looking at me and making rude and hurtful comments. I still watch people when I’m out and about, and for the first time in my life people are no longer staring at me and I am so thankful for that. This has not been easy or a quick fix. It’s been hard at times, but with the help of my family and all the staff from Nucleus and all the friends I have made there, it has all been worth it. THE LAST WORD When she’s not jumping out of planes or chilling with a nice glass of wine with friends, Gaynor Openshaw-Smith is Sales and Marketing Manager at the stunning 400 acre Cottrell Park Golf Resort near St. Nicholas in the Vale of Glamorgan. We caught up with Gaynor to find out what new developments are taking place at the resort. Tell us about where you work Cottrell Park is privately owned and has been a Golf complex since June 1996. The facility provides two 18 hole championship courses, idyllic clubhouse and most recently the launch of a new luxury marquee; all nestled in over 400 acres of stunning parkland with historic value. Other facilities include a 10km nature trail, fishing lake, snooker and pool room and meeting rooms. The complex offers ‘More than Golf’ with a host of exciting activities available on-site; some of which include Segway Adventure, Archery and Raft Building. We pride ourselves on our excellent standards, service and friendly ethos. What is your role there? I was appointed in August 2004 as Sales and Marketing Manager and as you can guess from the title, my main responsibilities include generating sales, management of the sales team and marketing the resort within set budgets. My role can be varied; one minute I can be conducting a corporate show round and the next, clearing tables! It’s all good fun though with a great supporting team at hand. What do you enjoy about your work at Cottrell Park? Hospitality is hard work but extremely rewarding and, having been in the industry since the age of sixteen years, I wouldn’t change my career for anything. I’ve had various roles within this industry ranging from silver service waitress through to golf events manager. You meet a lot of people and my job is making their job easier when it comes to organising events and the greatest reward is seeing how an initial idea can be made into something really special and seeing the results first hand.
Can you tell us about the exciting developments at Cottrell Park? A lot has changed since my appointment in August 2004 with on and off course investments. Most recently the launch of our new marquee adjacent to the clubhouse building is 45 metres long x 12 metres wide and large enough to accommodate 450 guests. This new facility can be hired for all occasions including weddings, celebration parties, corporate hospitality, fundraisers, gala dinners and golf events. The marquee will be available during spring/summer and the first part of autumn and probably dismantled for the winter, where it can be maintained and cleaned ready for the following season. Its arrival has already allowed the resort to host a charity fundraiser evening for 350 people in aid of Marie Curie Holme Towers Hospice in Penarth, raising near to £10,000. This was followed by a wedding fayre the following day with over 120 brides through the doors and a Diamond Jubilee Party on 4th June for members and visitors to enjoy a fun filled afternoon. The next big event will be Olympic themed! We believe the marquee will provide something new and unique in the area and prove to be a valuable addition to the company. ❧ 98 ❧
What is your favourite food and where do you go to eat? I love Thai and Chinese food although my husband is not a fan so I rarely get the opportunity. As we both work long hours and live on-site we tend to eat in the clubhouse a lot which is a good promotion in itself on the quality and choice of food on offer. If we do escape then we like to go to nearby village restaurants and pubs where we can relax and unwind. Sum yourself up in three words Motivated, enthused and organised. You may not know this but… I am a Chartered Marketer. I am studying for a Diploma in Digital Marketing. I own a cat. I jumped out of a plane at 20,000 feet doing a tandem skydive in Australia! In a nutshell, my philosophy is... Work hard, play hard and never give up!
