Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk is correct and accurate. WELCOME It’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to what to buy our loved ones for Christmas. There’s nothing better than taking time to browse the many shops in the Vale to find the perfect gift but, with time at a premium for most of us, we’ve taken the hassle out of this task and done the leg work for you. When we were young, my sister and I would spend hours playing ‘bagseye’ over a couple of catalogues (before you ask, we did have a television!). This issue reminds me of those times as it’s packed with gift ideas for every member of your family, loved ones, friends and colleagues. There’ll be something to suit every pocket, so out with the lists and away you go. There’s lots of ideas on where to eat and what to eat these coming months too and where to book your Christmas party. It’s the time to get your home prepared for winter too - whether it’s decorating a spare room for guests or giving your home a whole new look. Inside our beautiful, locallyprinted pages there’s lots of ideas on what to buy and, if you need a little inspiration, why not call on the expertise of an interior designer? With their talents, they’ll have your home looking like the pages of an interiors magazine in next to no time.
Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@valelife.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed around, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

My favourite place in the Vale is Cosmeston Lakes. It’s my place for all seasons; sunny summer barbecues, leaf strewn autumn walks, dodging April showers and when it’s transformed into a snowy winter wonderland. I go there on my own for a bit of peace and reflection, I go there with my husband for a romantic stroll and chat and I go there with my friends for fun and games. It really is my special place for all seasons. Jo Foxall

There’s really nothing better than a personal recommendation for a salon than that of a genuine customer. We met Linda Miller of Bonvilston, a longstanding customer of Beauty Advance to find out why she is such an ardent fan of the clinic.
TRIED & TESTED “It’s always been a good experience. The treatment rooms are comfortable and the staff are always friendly and put you at your ease.” Beauty Advance Ltd in Whitchurch now has the latest Harmony XLI Laser Platform which offers a whole new range of treatments. They are proud to be the only clinic in Wales to offer QUICK, EFFECTIVE, & PAIN FREE Laser treatments.
Daniela Evans, owner of Beauty Advance
How did you hear about the clinic? I met Daniela several years ago, at a Christmas village event. She told me about her clinic and invited me to an Open Evening, where I saw demonstrations on several treatments. I’ve been visiting ever since. What treatments do you have? My priority is keeping my skin as youthful as possible. I’ve had several of the key packages including Microderm Abrasion followed by a skin peel and I’m currently midway through a course of Laser 360. This a range of laser treatments specifically targeted to my facial needs. I also treat myself to the GELeration manicure which gives me perfect nails for up to three weeks! Who carries out the treatments? I’ve had treatments with Daniela and Suzanne, both of whom are experts and explain everything that’s going to happen and what to expect before they start a treatment.
Can you describe the experience? It’s always been a good experience. The treatment rooms are comfortable and the staff are always friendly and put you at your ease. Sometimes there has been some mild discomfort, but as I have always been pre warned as to what to expect, it’s never been a problem. Has it been effective? I’m definitely seeing the benefits of the facial treatments. My lines are finer, my skin tone more even. Do you think it’s good value? It is good value for money when you see the results. They have packages where you receive a discount on several treatments, booked in advance, so that reduces the cost. Would you recommend the salon? Yes, I would definitely recommend Beauty Advance because of their professionalism and their relaxed atmosphere during the treatments.

VALE FOOD & DRINK EACH ISSUE WE BRING YOU THE VERY BEST IN THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN
BA RRY
We’ve fallen for a stylish Italian It’s always a lovely surprise when you discover a new restaurant and our recent to the recently madeover Giulianos in Barry’s West End is no exception. Giulianos has been on our radar for many years but, for one reason or another, we had never got around to paying it a visit. As Julia Roberts says in Pretty Woman, “Big mistake, huge!” News of the makeover (and numerous people telling us that we really must try it) gave us the mental nudge to book a table. We liked Giulianos the minute we walked through the door. The new interior has a none-too-shabby chic about it. The design is restful and inviting. I loved the reclaimed boxes used as shelves, the beautifully designed bar stools and the overall colour and, even though they’ve decorated it for Christmas, I loved that too - tastefully understated. The food was just perfect: starters of Whitebait (the garlic dip was just divine) and Goat’s Cheese were perfectly executed. Our mains of Halibut Steak and Rump Steak were delivered without fault accompanied by sides of vegetables and twice-fried chips which were spot on. Starter and main portions were perfect so, being fabulously full, we shared what turned out to be one of the creamiest, silky smooth Tiramisu we’ve ever tasted. Italian restaurants can be clichéd at best, but Giulianos doesn’t fall into that trap - it’s a sweet, clean and stylish, comforting home from home that creates the perfect ambience for a family meal or courting couples. You could fall in love at Giulianos. Barry has kept this little secret to itself for far too long. Great food, great service and it’s reasonably priced. Do yourself a favour, book a table and experience one of the Vale’s hidden gems.

There’s a saying that goes something along the lines of, “In times of austerity, follow the old money.” I think the premise is that the older the investor, the wiser they must be.
LET’S DO LUNCH When it comes to eating out, or ‘dining out’ as the old(er) guard might describe it, the principle is much the same. The simple truth is you don’t get quality for cheap these days so you can imagine my surprise when I saw Le Monde offering two lunchtime courses for £12. Sacre bleu! I thought, how can they do this (it came out in more of an ‘Allo ‘Allo voice but you get the picture). Joking aside, my immediate thought is to doubt the quality of the offering given Le Monde’s impeccable reputation for quality and service (surely corners are being cut I thought) so I decided to see for myself. If you’ve not been to Le Monde before, you’re in for a treat. Le Monde is old school and I don’t mean that in the dusty or dated sense. It’s impressive it has a reassuring steadiness, an ambience and charm you don’t get at a chain restaurant.
“Le Monde is old school. It has a reassuring steadiness, an ambience and charm.”
The interior hasn’t changed in over twenty years (or some of the staff for that matter) so if it was off-trend at some point, it’s come full circle and is now reassuringly retro. I love the moody décor out of which the glass display cabinets full of the freshest produce glow like monumental jewels. I digress...
Lunch for two begins (as all lunches should) with a good glass of wine - in this case a great one - a superb Don Jacobo Rioja Crianza 2007. Our first course consists of a superb slightly roughly textured chicken and ham hock terrine and chef’s piccalilli with crusty toast for me. It’s excellent, but my wife’s mature cheddar and apple tartlet with rocket and balsamic garnish and home-made pickle is a meal in itself - the balance of flavours is perfect. If you dropped in for lunch and had just that with a glass of wine you couldn’t be living a better life. Main for me was a perfectly cooked breast of chicken which had been marinated in Rosemary and served with baby new potatoes and garlic aioli but, again, my better half had pipped me on the flavour front with beautifully cooked (rare) medallions of beef fillet with French mustard, creamy peppercorn sauce and scrumptious home-cut chips. This dish alone warranted a return visit - steak perfection. ❧ 14 ❧
We hadn’t intended to take dessert but our taste buds had been teased so I succumbed to a fabulous bread and butter pudding and my good lady chose a beautifully creamy cheesecake. Right through lunch her choices outflavoured mine and that’s no reflection on Le Monde. Truthfully, if mine were a perfectly respectable 9/10, hers were a perfect 10. I can honestly say that I enjoyed our lunch at Le Monde immensely. It was like seeing an old friend after many years apart - time may have passed us both by but it was very clear that we’d missed each other. There seemed to be quite a few old friends enjoying Le Monde on this particular day. Old money? Perhaps, but there were also some new faces there too for whom, just maybe, the endless rows of chain restaurants simply don’t cut the mustard and, if that’s the case, as they say in France, “Vive la différence.” Le Monde 61 St Mary Street Cardiff CF10 1FE 029 2038 7376 lemonde@le-monde.co.uk www.le-monde.co.uk

What do you do when you open a business and it’s extremely successful? Open another! And that’s exactly what the owners of The Little Blue Deli on Thomson Street in Barry have done this time, on Barry’s vibrant High Street.
TWICE AS NICE Vale Life readers may recall that we first announced the opening of The little Blue Deli on Thomson Street back in last years’ Autumn issue. Hard to believe that just over a year later, the second incarnation of this popular café/delicatessen has opened its doors at 86 High Street, Barry (formerly Vanilla Delicatessen). Regular customers at Thomson Street will know just how popular this great little eatery has become. Great coffee and good food combined with great service has been order of the day and, as I witnessed the High Street Little Blue Deli fill up on its second day of opening (to the point where you couldn’t get a seat), you have to give the owners a pat on the back for hitting the right chord with customers.
So what makes it so good? Is it the great coffee? Well, actually, yes. I happen to be a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to lattes and I can tell you that the Little Blue Deli makes one of the best in the Vale. Is it the food? If you count good, honest, home-made style cooking at sensible prices as being important then, again, Little Blue Deli will tick the box nicely. How about great service? They’re friendly and nothing seems too much trouble - it’s exactly how you’d hope service should be (and it’s with a smile). One of the things that many people tell me is that they like the cool, retro, relaxed interior of Thomson Street and they certainly won’t be disappointed at High Street. The transformation from what was the old Vanilla Coffee Shop is quite inspiring.
The high ornate ceiling creates a spacious almost reverential atmosphere and the clever use of curved room dividers topped by quirky lamps means that even when there’s a large queue (and there probably will be), seated customers shouldn’t be disturbed. There’s even some nice cwtches for customers who want to hide away. The design cues are eclectic and playful. Ornate wallpaper tips its hat to Van Gogh and William Morris in the painted panels and there’s an almost Moorish feel to some of the lighting features. Cool Farrow & Ball style colours keep the whole concept anchored in good taste - it works, beautifully. If Thomson Street, is cool and retro, High Street is its slightly more grown-up and refined big sister. And being slightly more grown up, where Thomson Street closes at 7pm the High Street Little Blue Deli intends to stay open later in the evening. I can’t deny I’m a fan. I like the offering and, it looks like I’m not alone, because as we go to press, there’s already a buzz about this great little business and quite rightly so.

When you think of the perfect fairytale wedding, there’s usually a castle involved! Vale Life spoke to Mrs Alexandra Williams on why she and her husband Ray chose romantic Fonmon Castle, just 35 minutes from Cardiff.
FAIRYTALE CASTLE They arranged for beautiful flowers from around the house and garden that fitted in with our theme to be placed in strategic places. They were like on-theday wedding planners. They organised the Vintage Ice cream Tricycle to come inside when it was raining to ensure that guests had their ice cream and helped him move outside when the weather dried up. They set everything up for us and packed it all up ready for us to go and get the next day. WED D IN G SUP P LIER S

How did you both meet? We met through a site called LoopyLove online, within three days of joining. Ray and I first talked online, we first talked on the phone three days later, we met in person six days later and we have been together ever since. Where and how Ray propose? Christmas Eve 2008, outside Exeter Cathedral. Ray went down on one knee with the sound of a choir singing Christmas music floating through the air from the Cathedral. It was an unforgettable moment, which I will cherish forever.
Why choose Fonmon Castle? I was very specific about the type of wedding venue that I wanted. It was really important to me that it wasn’t a ‘carbon cut out wedding’, I also wanted to be the only bride at our venue and exclusivity was really important. I wanted all our guests to feel like they were at home and feel like it was safe enough to let their children go off and explore without worrying about who else would be around.
Engagement ring John Trueman, St Martin’s Lane, Exeter. Bride’s dress (limited edition Maggie Sottero dress called Amber). Flower girls dresses Prudence Gowns, Plymouth. Bridesmaid dresses Suzanne James, Cardiff (since ceased trading). Groom and ushers attire Dyfed Menswear. Photographers Oliver and Ruth Jones. Catering The Really Fresh Food Company. Cars Champagne Wedding Cars. Flowers Alison Bentley.
We had a very warm welcome from the team at Fonmon on our first meeting who made us feel like anything we wanted was possible and made us feel special. They had a very can-do attitude compared to some of the other venues that we visited. It also was very flexible with having the option of the marquee, so it could accommodate our numbers in a beautiful blank canvas, and the guests were also able to enjoy the rich history and beautiful architecture and gardens that Fonmon has to offer. It was the perfect venue for us. How did they make the day special? We didn’t have to worry about a thing. Everything ran smoothly. They made sure that my husband and I took at least five minutes out alone so that we could stand back and enjoy the day. We gave them a list of all our suppliers and they worked with them to ensure that everything was in the right place and everyone knew what they were doing. ❧ 19 ❧

Your fencing is looking shabby and is giving no protection to your home. Do you go to one of the well known DIY stores and buy off-the-peg wooden fencing or do you get in touch with Colourfence for fencing which has a 25 year guarantee? We speak to Chris Howell, MD of Colourfence to find out more.
COLOURFENCE What is Colourfence? It’s a new breed of boundary fencing which has landed in the UK from Australia. It’s made of high tensile steel making it extremely strong but very lightweight too. It is a very practical alternative to traditional wooden fencing as it will not warp, corrode or peel and can stand up in winds of up to 130 miles per hour. As Colourfence is made of steel and has a tough painted finish, it lasts many times longer than wood and is completely recyclable, unlike wooden chemically treated fencing. Colourfence also comes with a 25 year guarantee and is virtually maintenance free except for the occasional wash down with the garden hose. So it’s durable then? The Colourfence fencing solution is manufactured from Zincalume high tensile steel and is fully engineered to be light weight yet extremely strong and durable. Our fence panels are guaranteed not to rot, warp or peel for 25 years and can withstand wind gusts up to 130mph giving you real peace of mind whatever the weather may throw at us.
“Low maintenance means it never needs treating or painting.” How does it look? Aesthetically it’s quite stunning. Available in a range of colours to compliment any garden environment, both sides are identical making Colourfence the most attractive fencing solution for you and your neighbour. Colourfence’s low maintenance characteristics means it never needs treating or painting, just the occasional hose down is all is required to keep your fence looking as good as new. How about privacy and security? Colourfence is available in heights of up to 2.1m and keeps your world inside and the outside world outside. Infills are securely locked into the post and rails as a deterrent to intruders, and a full range of lockable gates is available. There are no footholds to aid climbing, no sharp edges, no splinters, and no need for chemical treatments meaning a safer fence for you, your children and your pets.
Is it versatile? Colourfence fencing can be cut to any size on site, and can be stepped or raked according to your preference to accommodate sloping ground and allow your garden fence to follow the natural contours of your land. It can also be installed with or without decorative trellis which can be in the same or a contrasting colour depending on your preference. As the countdown to Christmas festivities begins, the shopping season is in full swing and there are plenty of good reasons to shop locally in Bridgend’s bustling town centre.
BRIDGEND Bridgend has an exciting and varied range of independent stores and boutiques that not only offer you excellent quality and customer service, but also knowledgeable and friendly staff to ensure you find that unique gift for your loved ones!
Another reason to visit Bridgend, is the regeneration of Bridgend’s town centre, transforming it into a vibrant town for visitors and residents alike.
Six key locations are set to benefit from a series of improvements which are being carried out in phases up to December 2014, as part of the effort to boost commercial confidence and encourage more private sector investment in the town centre by making it more attractive and accessible.
At Cheapside, sculptor David Annand was commissioned to produce and install unique artworks in order to create a distinctive environment at this key gateway into the town centre. The second phase of works is currently underway at Court Road & Derwen Road, with future phases scheduled to be carried out at Nolton Street South and Elder Yard.
Works are well underway in Bridgend town centre as part of the current three year, £8m regeneration programme which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Welsh Government and Bridgend County Borough Council.
The first phase of the programme has recently been completed and delivered high quality paving, lighting and landscaping improvements at Cheapside & Merthyr Mawr Road North. Merthyr Mawr Road North is a designated Conservation Area; the improvements at this location have therefore also helped to enhance the historic character of the town.

In London alone the number of claims per year doubled between 2006 and 2011 and that appears to be indicative of a broader trend across the whole of the country.
In response to the increase in such matters and in light of increasing instructions, Hugh James solicitors have recently expanded their existing Contested Wills, Trusts and Estates Department by recruiting another specialist solicitor, Roman Kubiak.

Wills and estates disputes on the rise
In recent years there have also been a number of high profile cases regarding contested wills that have made national news. These include the successful challenge of a will under the terms of which the RSPCA were beneficiaries and several claims relating to multimillion pound farming assets brought on the basis of broken promises made to family members.
Why not treat yourself and book a table now? And, if you book using Pier 64’s Facebook app, you will receive a free glass of Prosecco on arrival – a great way to start an unforgettable evening.

“Anne helped Diane avoid an operation and claims she is now completely pain free.” Anne Rodgers
❧ 30 ❧
If you’re suffering from a medical condition and you feel that conventional medicine isn’t working for you, then you might wish to consider a different approach.
Diane Follon
TRIED & TESTED Anne Rodgers from Penarth describes herself simply as a healer and she appears to be having amazing results. Vale Life speaks to one of her clients, Diane Follon aged 68 from Dinas Powys, who tells us how Anne helped her avoid an operation and claims she is now completely pain free. How did you hear about Anne? I’ve known Anne from when she was a hairdresser seventeen years ago. What made you go to Anne? I was having horrific pain in my stomach and my side. It was so bad that I had to get the doctor out – quite unusual for me. The doctor said that, from my symptoms, he thought I could have a gallstone. A scan in Llandough Hospital showed that I had a large stone the size of a conker. I was also suffering from heartburn and reflux as a result and in a lot of pain. I was at the hairdressers one day and mentioned it to Anne. She said, “Come to me and I’ll sort it out.” I thought I had nothing to lose so I went. Describe the experience you felt while Anne worked on you... Anne explained what would happen. She said I would probably feel worse after the initial treatment but then feel better. I remember waking up feeling quite well and went to work (I worked in a local chemist at the time). As the day went on, I started to feel really unwell. I telephoned Anne and explained my predicament and she said, “I’m not surprised. You should be resting as you’ve effectively had an operation!”
“She’s been given a gift and, to be honest, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.” Whilst having treatment with Anne, I went to see my consultant who said that I had been put on the waiting list for an operation to remove the stone. The waiting list was a year long. I was feeling a lot better seeing Anne so I didn’t mind. After six or seven treatments, Anne said, “It’s nearly gone.” I felt a lot better and went back to my doctor who couldn’t believe how well I looked. She insisted that I had another scan. I had the scan and it showed a tiny stone, so small you could hardly see it. I told Anne she’d missed a bit. I went to see Anne again and over a couple of sessions she got rid of the rest of it. Did you always go alone? One time I took my sister with me. It was a memory I’ll keep with me forever. While Anne was working on me, my sister suddenly said, “I can see a big hole in my sister’s stomach.” Anne knew what she was talking about. It was where she was working on me with her guides’ assistance. Anne had a picture up on her wall that she had painted of her guides and on looking at this my sister then said, “I can see an extra person in the picture.” Anne smiled and said that this was the guide that was helping me heal my gallstone. (Anne says that she has certain guides that help her with each individual’s needs).
How did you feel? I gave up all medication and was pain free from then on. That was seventeen years ago. Have you seen Anne since? Yes. A few years ago I suffered from a frozen shoulder. It was Christmas time at the chemist and I had to wrap Christmas gifts. My frozen shoulder hurt so much that I couldn’t do it and had to call in help. I called Anne and she told me to come visit her and she would ‘sort me out’. I did and within a couple of visits my shoulder was fine. Have you recommended Anne to friends? Yes I have. Most of Anne’s clients are by word-of-mouth. Anne’s work is a bit of a secret in Penarth but the more people I talk to, the more people seem to know of others that she’s helped. I think she’s been given a gift and, to be honest, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. Anne Rodgers has asked us to stress that she treats each case individually and that if she feels she cannot help someone, she will tell them at the outset. Anne has written a book about her journey, which includes testimonials of the people she’s helped. The book is available from Windsor Book Shop, Penarth or Wellfield Book Shop, Wellfield Road, Cardiff, and costs £11. If you’ve made the decision to have cosmetic surgery, you’ll need to choose the right surgeon to carry out the procedure. But which one do you choose? We’ve done all of the hard work for you as we chat with Miles Berry of the highly respected Welbeck Hospital.
A SPRING IN YOUR STEP Vale Life chats to Miles Berry of Cosmetic Surgery Partners about his job, working with eminent cosmetic surgeon Dai Davies. What qualifications do you hold? BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, MB BS, MS (Master of Surgery), FRCS, FRCS (Plast). How long have you been with Cosmetic Surgery Partners? I began working with them in 2007. What has it been like working with Mr. Dai Davies? Interesting, instructive, challenging. Working with Dai has been an excellent entrée to the world of aesthetic surgery. What are your specialities? I specialise in aesthetic surgery in general, but I super-specialise in breasts, eyes and face and labiaplasty. Why have you chosen to work specifically in those areas? It’s a combination of professional exposure and experience. In addition, the ability to achieve consistent and high quality results, along with personal satisfaction. Do you ever say no to patients when you think they may not need surgery or if you think that what their expecting is unachievable? Yes, absolutely. Our field of surgery is ‘want’ not ‘need’, so both parties must be entirely satisfied that expectations are not only realistic, but achievable biologically.
“When I see people a few weeks after surgery with a big smile on their face and a spring in their step, I know what we’ve achieved goes a lot deeper. We’ve helped them at an emotional level.”
When do you think is the best time for a woman to consider a facelift and why? There’s no set time age-wise and studies show that greatest patient satisfaction occurs slightly younger (45-55 years) than much older. Whilst rare, there are potential complications that are visible, so risk-benefit balance is important. As with any procedure, in my experience, the unhappiest are those doing it not for themselves, but for others. Which facelift surgeries do you favour and why? The best one for each individual case. There is a lot of ‘puff’ about certain types, but the SMAS (superficial musculo aponeurotic system) should be involved (skin-only lifts do not last) and the length of the scar is determined not by the surgeon’s skill or age, but simply by the amount of redundant skin. Can you tell us, what do you see as the emerging trends in cosmetic surgery? We have departed from the ‘Jordan, look at me’ result, and find the happiest patients, in general, to be those in whom the surgery is imperceptible to family and friends.

Miles has written two books and many articles on Breast Cosmetic Surgery and Scientific topics. Specialist areas ■ Breast Augmentation ■ Facial Rejuvenation including facelift,
blepharoplasty and rhinoplasty ■ Liposuction ■ Labiaplasty.
At what age did you know that you wanted to be a surgeon? I know it might sound strange but as a young boy. I just knew it was the thing I wanted to do. Where do you see yourself in the future? Still alive! And with luck, in the position Dai is now. In this profession, we never stop learning. It really is a wonderful job and the results are very satisfying. Many people think surgery is a physical thing, which of course it is, but when I see people a few weeks after surgery with a big smile on their face and a spring in their step, I know what we’ve achieved goes a lot deeper. We’ve helped them at an emotional level and that’s very satisfying. ❧ 34 ❧

You can judge a society by how it treats its most vulnerable and a recent visit to Beechwood College in Sully reassured me that some people feel the same. Here, a team of truly wonderful people are working to help some of our most vulnerable members of society realise their potential in a caring and nurturing environment.
A SPECIAL LIFE
Claire needs one-to-one help and the staff really are amazing - so patient. What’s nice is they take the students on outings to supermarkets and to other public places to help develop social skills. Claire has never liked loud noises or places that are busy but, with the help of Beechwood College, she’s really come a long way. The College helps Claire fulfil her potential. How long has Claire been at Beechwood College? She is in her third year now. Don’t the placements only last three years? Yes. Her time there will be up next July. We are hoping that she can go on to the College’s moving-on option, where she can live in a modern supported living environment which is part of the College.
Beechwood College is Wales’ first Further Education College dedicated to supporting young people and adults (aged 16+) with autistic spectrum conditions or Asperger’s Syndrome. The College provides clinical, physical, learning, sensory, social and emotional needs to its students. Vale Life talks with Delma Mullins whose daughter Claire, 21, is a student at Beechwood College. What difficulties does Claire experience? Claire was born with a lot of complex issues. She was born with a cleft palate and has always had problems feeding herself. Her birth mother was remedial and could not look after her and, as a consequence, Claire was put into care. My husband and I took Claire into our home and have dedicated our lives to looking after her. Claire also has brain damage, ADHD, hearing and sight problems and facial deformities. She didn’t walk until she was eight and was still in nappies at age twelve. Despite her difficulties, she is a lovely girl and is very capable of affection.
Did Claire attend a special needs school? Yes, we fought hard to get her into Ashgrove School in Sully. How did you hear about Beechwood College? It was whilst Claire was at Ashgrove School that I met with her careers officer who told me about the College. How much time does Claire spend there? She’s there from Monday to Friday on a residential basis. We pick her up on a Friday night and take her back Monday morning. She’s home for holidays. How do you think Claire benefits from being at Beechwood College? I don’t know where we’d be without Beechwood College. I’ve seen a dramatic difference in Claire. They help her with her independence, personal care and social interaction skills. Claire is a very shy girl but since being at the College, she’s a lot more outgoing and is more able to communicate with others. ❧ 36 ❧
Are you hopeful of this? We are hopeful both for ourselves and Claire. My husband and I are in our early sixties and we are concerned about what will happen to Claire if she doesn’t get the ongoing help she needs. How is this funded? Families can get help through the Welsh Government or the Local Authority. We will have to reapply for funding again and just hope that the application is granted.
Would you recommend Beechwood College to other families in your position? Absolutely. It gives my husband and I great peace of mind knowing that Claire is being looked after. I know that if Claire could make her own decisions, she would want to be at Beechwood College. I think she feels at home there. All families get financial assistance from either the Welsh Government or Local Authority. The deadline for application submissions for September 2013 intake is the end of January 2013. To celebrate the life and work of Iolo Morgannwg, an architect of the Welsh nation, a new 6.5 mile walking trail was launched at this year’s National Eisteddfod.
Since 2004, Creative Rural Communities has helped to improve the quality of life in rural areas through funding a variety of projects including tourism activities, the conservation and upgrading of the rural heritage, and the creation of micro-enterprises.
The consultations aim to encourage residents to express their thoughts on what they particularly like or wish to see introduced and improved in their communities. Feedback from the discussions is later used to help identify and develop future projects with support from Creative Rural Communities.
Iolo Morgannwg (1747-1846) was a romantic poet, antiquary, literary and historical forger, and one of the most extraordinary characters to have lived in the Vale of Glamorgan.
“2012 has seen the introduction and development of both new and existing projects which help to improve the quality of life in the rural Vale.”
Past attendance at these events has been great and residents’ participation highlights the strength of community spirit across the rural Vale. As a result of these consultations, several projects focusing on new play areas, benches, mobile cinemas and community libraries are underway in villages across the Vale. All the consultation results are available to read at: www.creativeruralcommunities.co.uk

Starting at the Old Hall in Cowbridge, the walking route encompasses twelve sites around the Vale of Glamorgan and a number of Iolo’s old haunts including The Bear Hotel which Iolo frequented during his youth. The new walking trail gives visitors the opportunity to explore the history behind some of the Vale’s most beautiful sites. Booklets are free to pick up at Costa and The Bear Hotel on Cowbridge High Street, The Bush Inn in St Hilary, The Blue Anchor in East Aberthaw and St Illtyd’s Church in Llantwit Major or can be downloaded at: www.visitthevale.com

While the Vale of Glamorgan is home to an array of quality accommodation providers, there has been an increasing demand for more sites that cater for campers and travellers on a budget.
Since 2009, the Rural Events Network has been giving event organisers in the rural Vale the opportunity to share ideas and experiences in addition to hiring event equipment free of charge.
At the end of 2011, Creative Rural Communities launched the Coastal Camping pilot scheme, offering local landowners assistance with planning, funding, licensing and practical advice needed to set up trial campsites. With the recent launch of the Wales Coast Path and the Vale of Glamorgan playing host to the 2012 National Eisteddfod, this summer was the ideal time to encourage visitors to pitch up their tents and see what the area has to offer.
Five local landowners took part in the trial, with each new campsite welcoming campers for up to 28 days. Over 600 campers pitched up at one of the five new campsites over the summer, making the most of all the local amenities and exploring the Vale’s unique heritage during their stay. The Heritage Coast Campsite in Monknash has since been granted planning consent to operate as a permanent site from 2013. www.perfectpitchcamping.co.uk
Membership has gone from strength to strength and the Rural Events Network has now risen to over 100 members. This summer, the network has invested in a wide range of new equipment including 20 gazebos, a new PA system, an array of children’s games and a huge spider dome, which at 8m wide certainly attracts attention! The new equipment made its debut at the Cowbridge Book Festival earlier this year and has since been used at a variety of large and small scale events across the rural Vale. In order to join the network, members need to organise a non-profit making event in the rural Vale that is open to everyone. www.ruraleventsnetwork.co.uk

The variety of bathroom fittings is mind boggling, so why not speak to the people who have the widest possible product knowledge, who can guide you through the entire process and open up the world of bathrooms for you.
BE INSPIRED! You’ve decided that your bathroom needs updating, but what to do next? You may have a small bathroom but remember, there’s always room for improvement. If it’s a large room, how do you use the space to its full potential? The answer is simple - visit the team at Cardiff Bathroom Centre. The key features to look for in a bathroom showroom are knowledgeable, friendly showroom staff, an extensive range of displays to help you choose your fittings and, of course a highly experienced design team who will listen to you and work with you to achieve the best possible result. Your first visit to the showroom could be a bit overwhelming. You may have an idea of the sort of style you like, but with so many questions, so many possibilities, so many options, ultimately it comes down to, “What will fit into my bathroom?” So your next step takes you to the design team.
Once a clear idea of what you would like is reached, plans will be produced. This might take a couple of days so that all the possibilities can be explored. When you come back to the showroom your designer will take you around the displays to show you the fittings shown in your plans. At this stage the plans can be amended, and alternative fittings can be shown. You will be guided towards fittings appropriate to the size and shape of your room and which are suitable for your plumbing system. If you would like advice on the colour scheme, then your designer will be happy to help you.
“A new bathroom is an investment, so choose good quality fittings and have them professionally installed.”
Helping them to help you. This is probably the most important phase of your project. Getting the layout right simplifies the process of choosing the fittings. The designer will discuss all your requirements with you. A good designer is a good listener, after all, it is your bathroom! Provide as much information about the room as you can – length, width and height, positions of windows and doors, etc. What sort of water system does your home have – combi boiler, gravity fed system etc. This is important information for the designer as it will help to determine the appropriate fittings for your home. The more information, the better. With an experienced designer’s knowledge of plumbing systems they may be able to re arrange the bathroom in ways you may not have thought possible. ❧ 40 ❧
Installation Another important consideration is installation. Good installation is as important as the fittings which go into the bathroom. Poor installation can ruin a project and end up costing more to put things right. A new bathroom is an investment, so choose good quality fittings and have them professionally installed. Look for a bathroom installer who can offer a complete installation service and remember, not all plumbers are bathroom installers!

Who would have thought that set in the beautiful Vale countryside, just off the A48, would be a little gem of a furniture store? Home Comforts Furniture Warehouse is far from the cavernous, soul-less buildings that perhaps you’re accustomed to.
A POLISHED PERFORMANCE We talk to owners Gareth and Nicola Punter about their passion for providing quality furniture and why they believe visitors to Home Comforts Furniture Warehouse deserve an exceptional shopping experience. Walk through its doors and you’ll be rewarded with tastefully laid out and accessorised, quality oak and pine furniture. When was the business established? We opened our doors in February 2012. How many staff do you employ? We have three members of staff. Richard Lang our full time Manager has been with us since the start. He’s brilliant, totally flexible, turning his hand to anything and helping out whenever he can. We also have two part time staff. John is our delivery driver and Lisa helps out at weekends. What’s on offer at Home Comforts? We offer high quality, solid, fully assembled pine and oak furniture, as well as top quality Parlane and other accessories. All of our pine is British made and hand-finished by British craftsmen. Our oak is also of the highest quality. It’s the very stable American White Oak - solid throughout and comes totally assembled.
“Each piece of furniture is manufactured to the highest degree.” What are your most popular lines? We have five ranges of pine and eight ranges of oak, all with their very own characteristics. The oaks I would say are the most popular, especially our Priory and Cathedral collections, although all hold their own when it comes to sales. Pine is also very well received, especially in the painted choices that we provide.
Do you offer free delivery? Yes, within 25 miles of our Llangan (near Cowbridge) warehouse. We not only deliver to the room of the customer’s choosing, we also remove all packaging and only leave when the customer is completely satisfied. What’s new for this season? We have some brilliant new collections and some lovely new colours and finishes. The dining season at Home Comforts has really kicked off to a flying start. We have some fantastic oak table and chair sets with some really tempting introductory offers.
Why do customers come to you? We know that the oak and pine that we provide is some of the best available in the British market place today, something that we are very proud of. Every customer is greeted on arrival and given the space and time to browse the collections. We also offer free hot beverages and there’s free parking.
What accessories do you offer? We have a large amount of both Hills and Parlane quality accessories: fantastic hand-made lamps, prints, door stops, sculptures, photo frames, and Indian runner ducks - not forgetting hand-carved hardwood kids’ animal stools which are really popular. It’s a comprehensive selection
What do you think sets you apart? We source only quality furniture. In the case of pine furniture, all of it is manufactured in the UK by British craftsmen. Each piece of furniture has dovetail joints to the drawer boxes and is manufactured to the highest degree.

The Designer Kitchen and Bathroom Awards is the industry’s most talked about design event. Only the best of the best are shortlisted for review in the final selection process and, this year, Thomas Gardiner are putting forward their bathroom design with high hopes of winning. We chat to designer Gian Mantelli about the project and what it means to be shortlisted.
DESIGNED FOR LIFE What do you think is special about this particular project? The bathroom’s new layout made it unrecognisable from its original state and I feel no matter what size budget you are working with it is crucial to start with a blank canvas and create something unique. The combination of opulent textures in this concept creates a real sense of luxury, from the Welsh glass, Indonesian stone and faux mink blind to dress the window area. What did you enjoy most about this project? The end result would not have been possible without the client having complete confidence in my design abilities and it was that working relationship and trust in my decision making that made this whole project so enjoyable and rewarding.
How did you hear about the Design Awards? The KBB national design awards are the pinnacle of the kitchen and bathroom industry and take place every year. Have you entered this competition before? I have been previously involved with these awards but not as an independent entry. I was involved with the refurbishment of a new showroom and subsequently our company presentation reached the finals. What made you enter this time? It has been a very exciting year in terms of product launches and the type of projects I have been designing. Our budgets have been slightly larger which obviously helps to push the boundaries but most importantly our clients are extremely design savvy which inspires me to create some wonderful interiors.
What was your brief? It was my task to design a master bathroom, sympathetic to a traditional cottage set in the Vale of Glamorgan with its irregular walls and curved ceilings, but at the same time I had to create a contemporary interior that would that would accommodate a digital shower system. What were the challenges? Before even considering the product choices a lot of preparation work went into re-structuring the room. I needed to soften quite a harsh space by curving a chimney breast and airing cupboard. By layering the floor level I not only created a visual feature but a much needed void to conceal a multitude of pipework and structural supports. Being an old property we had to take a very different approach to what materials we used, for example the walls were limed not plastered. ❧ 46 ❧
When will the judging be held? The award ceremony will be held in Spring 2013 so it is a waiting game to hear if I have made the finals.

With a combined career of over fifty years, it’s no wonder that UsTu salon in Porthcawl is leading the way in offering high quality service at affordable pricing. We ask owners Paul and Wayne about their philosophy and why they believe they’re the leaders in their field.
Who is involved in the business? It’s us two - Paul Barry and Wayne Keene.
IT’S USTU
When was UsTu established? Our business began in July 1995 in a very small premises on the corner of John Street, then Paul spotted our new premises, and in 2007 we moved. Why the move? We had outgrown our first premises in the early years, but had to bide our time until just the right property came along which would enable us to do everything we had hoped to, with room for further expansion as required. What is your business philosophy? We wanted an environment that would be open, airy, light and relaxing - yet timeless. We had the furniture handmade and custom-fit, while the chairs were imported from Italy. Our clients deserve the best and we aim to provide it for them. We wanted an environment where we and our staff would look forward to and enjoy working in and we are proud to say we have achieved that. Is this reflected in your pricing? Not at all. We have made every effort to produce the highest standards of hairdressing at reasonable cost. Too many salons these days have over inflated prices. We believe that the finest quality hairdressing should be accessible to everyone , and we do so without cutting any corners, using only the highest grade products available Joico, GHD, Kebelo, and Fudge.
“It’s not a job to us. This is our craft.” Where do your clients come from? Our clients are of all ages and all denominations from across the Vale, Cardiff and as far afield as Scotland and England. We don’t target a particular demographic as mostly everybody needs a haircut. Our clients enjoy consistent, quality craftsmanship in stylish, welcoming and relaxing surroundings, in the company of a friendly, creative and skillful team.
How many staff do you employ? Our team is ten strong and we regularly attend advanced courses, bringing our knowledge back to our staff, thus improving our skill-set and keeping abreast of the latest developments. It’s not a job to us. This is our craft.

St. Clare’s, a co-educational non-selective independent day school for children aged from two and a half to 18 years of age, has both improved its facilities and broadened its curriculum this autumn.
A PROUD HISTORY A BOLD FUTURE A home of learning since 1938, the school is set in private, green grounds in the picturesque village of Newton, near Porthcawl. In 2013, St Clare’s will celebrate their 75th anniversary of providing educational excellence in Newton with a series of events for current and past parents and students. Academic achievement is strong with this year’s A-level students having a 98% overall pass rate, 55% of all results in the Grades A*-B range with over a third of pupils achieving A* or A. 100% of pupils gained six or more GCSE pass grades at A* - C with 50% of the overall grades at A* / A. Close to the M4 and A48 and less than half an hour from the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, the school has regular school bus services to transport children safely and securely from home to classroom. The school has a strong sense of community and each and every pupil is part of the St. Clare’s family. A first class education is offered from Early Years to Sixth Form and each child’s talents are nurtured by a team of dedicated staff led by headmaster John Aguilar, enabling them to reach their full potential.
With an investment from Cognita Schools of over £1.2 million, the school has seen a wealth of improvements including a brand new dining hall, improved nursery accommodation offering extended hours of care, a new multi-use sports surface and enhancements to Science, Art and Food Technology teaching spaces. Significant investment in our catering provision has involved the construction of a new wooden-clad hall with state of the art kitchen, which fits sympathetically into the historic surroundings of the school.
A new catering company, Thomas Franks, has been appointed and has developed an imaginative programme of menus to encourage a positive attitude towards a healthy diet for pupils and staff. The nutritious menus will vary from week to week, and include traditional wholesome fare alongside light and refreshing alternatives. During this academic year, the nursery opening hours will be extended to 8am6pm, Monday to Friday, for 47 weeks of the year. Housed in a self-contained, purpose-built unit, our facility offers outstanding levels of care in a safe, stimulating and creative environment. Children are cared for by a dedicated and well-qualified team of experienced Early Years professionals. Our last Estyn report (2008) listed St Clare’s Nursery as Grades 1 and 2: Good to Outstanding.

Although you won’t find a vast selection of colour bells and whistles, what you will find is new stock and classical morningwear (in 100% wool). Hawkes Essentials will also tailor everything to fit, making sure that your outfit looks great on your wedding day. “The reason we have taken on this new avenue of service is because a friend of mine got married last year. He went to three major wedding hire businesses in Cardiff, none of which could help him at short notice, so he came to me and said ‘Russ, you have to start hiring wedding suits,’” said Russell Scott-Lawson, owner of Hawkes Essentials. “The rest is history. We don't want to do anything other than the classic outfit of tailcoat, grey waistcoat and striped trouser. After all, that’s what Hugh Grant wore in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral!” So, if you want the ultimate in class and refinement, visit Hawkes Essentials for a fitting for your wedding day.

photography*jnr - for creative little minds When Natasha Jenkins’s son Finlay began taking an interest in taking pictures, his mum, a professional photographer, began searching on the internet for a photography club for him. Nothing was forthcoming, so she came up with the idea of photography*jnr, a club for under 16’s (and their mums and dads) to get together, make new friends and take lots of great photographs. We chatted to Natasha to find out more. What are the benefits of joining? Basically, it’s to bring friends together and meet many new ones along the way. It’s a great way to get mums, dads and kids out of the house into the fresh air, and do something together. It’s all about spending some good old fashioned quality time with each other. When does this happen? We get together after school or at weekends. Rain or shine, we all go for a walk out and about, or maybe into the city to taking some photo’s of our trip and what we see. If the weather is bad we’ll go somewhere inside and use our flashes! CA RD IF F BAY

Russell Scott-Lawson will tell you that Hawkes Essentials has been over twenty years in the making. We always thought it was rather good as it was but, after a five figure basement refurbishment, this very fine gentleman’s outfitters has just got that little bit finer.
LIVING THE DREAM What inspired the design of the basement? The fit is based on classic style with little touches of modern to accent. It gives a calm welcoming feeling and the stock is displayed in a manner that’s very easy on the eye. By displaying an outfit rather than an item, we’re helping the customer make considered choices. Men are not generally great shoppers - we try to find something we like without having to hunt endlessly through rails - hence the lack of them in Hawkes. How have customers reacted to the makeover? We’ve had such an overwhelmingly positive response and trade has taken a nice upturn. I love what I do. I know it’s work, but I enjoy this business so much. I suppose you could say I’m living the dream. Vale Life caught up with Russell as he puts the finishing touches to ‘downstairs’. Russell is beaming, proudly. It’s lovely to see actually when there’s so much doom and gloom out there, to see someone genuinely passionate about their business, and enjoying it, really lifts the soul. Russell, are you happy? At last! After years of planning, and months and months of long days and late nights sawing, banging, painting and staining, our beautiful basement is finally finished.
So you really are happy with it... Absolutely! It has surpassed all of my expectations (and ours we have to say) and complements our offering perfectly. Honestly, I’ve dreamed about this day for a long time.
“We’re striving for excellence here. We don’t do second best!”
Hawkes Essentials was none too shabby before. Why did you feel that you needed to raise the bar even further? We can’t stand still. We have to keep on raising the bar. I always wanted to have a quality business that offers customers superior levels of service, hand-picked clothing and the very finest tailoring. I actually feel that we’re nearly there. When you say nearly... I know, I know but seriously folks, we’re striving for excellence here. We don’t do second best! So what can customers expect from the new gorgeously made-over Hawkes Essentials? We’re really excited about our new labels: Holland Esquire, Eton shirts, and 1 Like No Other - seriously stylish clothing. Combine this with an already quality-driven buying policy and we believe that customers old and new really are in for a treat. ❧ 64 ❧

When only bespoke quality will do, Rathkey’s craftsmanship and service may be just the right choice for you.
ONLY BESPOKE Vale Life spoke with owner Paul Rathkey to find out why customers choose him and what it is that makes Rathkey’s kitchens so special. Paul, what’s your role in Rathkey’s? I manage and organise a team of staff and ensure the safe and creative crafting of bespoke furniture to the client’s requirement. I meet clients at their homes or premises and discuss in detail what their options are and put forward ideas. Where did you train? Rycotewood College, where I gained a diploma in Furniture & Design. I was then head hunted by David Linley Furniture, the owner, of which is Viscount Linley, the Queen’s nephew, and I worked there for the next ten years making fine bespoke furniture for some very rich and famous people. ❧ 66 ❧
“I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products.”
WILL DO Describe your typical day From the moment I arrive in work, at 8am most days, I begin by answering phonecalls and meet with the team to ensure they all have enough work to keep themselves busy through the day. I also have to make sure that all orders for materials are placed in plenty of time so that we have the correct stock and materials to complete the jobs we have. In between all of this I visit clients to discuss projects and, back on site, answer any enquiries and liaise with the team regarding any technical issues that may arise. Do you see any trends developing? Recently, the call for contemporary furniture as opposed to traditional furniture has been in higher demand, working with more oak and walnut furniture. A large proportion of our work is for bespoke kitchens in natural timber or hand-painted finishes.
“I was head hunted by David Linley.” Do you enjoy your job? I am passionate about wood and making bespoke furniture. I get a sense of immense satisfaction when we create beautiful products. I love the feel of the timber when the furniture is completed and enjoy seeing the faces of satisfied customers, many of whom have become firm friends. How do you get most of your work? We are pleased to say that we have had regular work and are very lucky that clients have highly recommended us to new potential customers, even allowing us to show clients their houses and the quality of work we produce. What are your future plans? To continue to give an excellent service to our clients. ❧ 67 ❧

Pavilion launch new Barbour collection The new Barbour Steve McQueen™ collection is launched at Pavilion. This year’s collection is themed around Steve & friends. Downtime for McQueen was spent among working men and speed freaks, far from the Hollywood crowd.
“The Rexton faithfully recreates the jacket that Steve McQueen™ wore in the 1964 International Six Day Trials (ISDT) in East Germany.” During this time he lived and raced in his Barbour, most notably when he represented the United States team in the 1964 International Six Day Trials (ISDT) in East Germany. The ISDT is one of the most challenging racing events in the world with each rider covering 200 miles a day over various terrains. Recognising the jacket as the best defence against the European weather, the US team stopped off in London to buy their Barbour Internationals. The uncomplicated way the jacket design coped with rain and mud made it the perfect choice, while the ergonomic design of the cargo pockets was ideal for storage. Stand out pieces from this seasons collection include the Rexton and Crown jackets, both with US stars and stripes linings and the US flags on the left chest. The Rexton faithfully recreates the jacket that Steve wore in the1964 ISDT in East Germany. Already a best seller, the Rexton comes in distressed olive 8oz wax cotton and the Crown is available in black 6oz sylkoil wax cotton.

18ct white gold tanzanite and diamond ring
The holidays are a time to show the one you love just how much you care - and because you have found the love of your life, you want to show her the ultimate declaration of your love by proposing (yes, trust me, you do!).
A FINE ROMANCE
Christmas is a magical season for marriage proposals, since the perfect engagement ring is the ultimate gift for that special lady in your life. But what if you’re not sure how to take advantage of this special season, not to worry - Jay Ellen Jewellery has a range of beautiful rings to help raise your chances that she’ll say yes!
The ring is an unbroken symbol of unity and nothing is as powerful in conveying this message to the one you love. If you’re not quite ready for that level of commitment (you may already be married), but still want to show your loved one how much you care, then a beautiful dress ring could be the perfect gift. Stylish, bold jewellery is back with an eclectic vengeance this winter; and not the cheerful ‘mix and match with every outfit’ type, but rocks, gems and classic timeless pieces.
Faking it till you make it is fine, to a limit, but nothing feels as good as wearing the real thing - it’s like adorning yourself with cashmere - you never want to take it off!
If you crave something with a sense of history then ask to see some of the beautiful pieces on offer. Then decide on a budget and your style preference perhaps the classic solitaire? Or a three stone diamond ring could be in order? Why not be daring and go for something a touch more unique? Whatever your desire, Jay Ellen will be happy to talk through your options and help find a stunning signature piece to suit you.

A Timely Investment A new watch, like most luxury items, may depreciate in value by up to 30%. Pre-owned classic watches, however, can not only hold their value but register significant increases. If you’re fortunate enough to have a little set aside to invest, and you like the finer things in life, then there could probably be no better investment than classic, pre-loved timepieces. Timeless brands such as Tissot, Longines and Jaeger Le Coultre will not only hold their value but will, in most cases, increase significantly over time - even more than the original purchase cost! With good care and regular maintenance, a quality watch will last you a lifetime. All watches are serviced, refurbished and guaranteed.

We chat to leading dental practitioners Dr Kevin Gracias and Dr Amir Koochek of Cathays Dental in Cardiff about the benefits of dental implants.
CA RD IF F
Dental implants at Cathays Dental Clinic Whilst we all know that there have been marked improvements in dental care over the years, as well as the increasingly sophisticated tools available to dentists, public awareness of the importance of good dental hygiene has become more widespread. Despite this, millions of people still suffer from the loss of teeth due to decay, gum disease or injury. Missing teeth have traditionally been countered with bridges and dentures, but dental implants are a modern alternative to dentures that are becoming more sought after. What are dental implants? Implants are used to replace tooth roots, providing a foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth. The fact they can be made to match your own teeth is an added bonus. What are the advantages? Aesthetics and function. Because implants are designed to take on the appearance of your natural teeth, they are completely unnoticeable to anyone else. They fuse with your bone structure, meaning they are a permanent fixture.
One aspect of dentures that consistently grates with wearers is the matter of discomfort. Poorly-fitting dentures can slip, leading to embarrassment, especially when this affects speech. C O M FO R T
Implants make it far easier to chew food compared to dentures. Because implants fuse with your bone, you are able to eat all of your favourite foods, no matter how chewy or crunchy, without suffering any adverse issues or pain. LO N G E V I T Y
With sufficient care, there is no reason why you would ever need implants replaced at all. The reliability of implants is what puts them head and shoulders over dentures. They are a permanent solution with no need to ever remove them or to use adhesives to keep them in place. O R A L H E ALTH
Unlike a tooth-supported bridge, inserting implants doesn’t require other teeth to be reduced. This ensures more of your own teeth remain intact, with benefits to your long-term dental health. Implants allow far greater access to your teeth when it comes to brushing and flossing. ❧ 74 ❧
“Because implants are designed to take on the appearance of your natural teeth, they are completely unnoticeable to anyone else. Are dental implants suitable for all? As long as you’re in general good health with regard to routine dental surgery, you will be suitable for dental implants. You need to have good, healthy gums and enough bone to form the foundation for the procedure. Good oral hygiene and a regime of regular dental visits are also recommended. If you fall into higher risk categories – if you suffer from diabetes or heart disease, or are a heavy smoker – you will need to be assessed individually. There are other medical conditions which might interfere with your suitability. We would be able to advise each patient on the best course of action for them. With so many venues to choose from, we had to ask one of the founder members of a funky new networking club Fiftyone3, Caroline Holmes, why they chose The Attic exclusive members bar situated above Soda Bar on the popular Mill Lane for their monthly networking events.
TRIED & TESTED What is Fiftyone3 Caroline? Fiftyone3 is a networking club for young professionals. We’re not rigid about the age limit but the general membership base around 35 and under. We meet every other month to network informally on a Friday evening with a drink or two. Fiftyone3 was born out of informal discussion between the founders, Cennydd Thomas and Neil Creswell from UHY Peacheys, Mike Jordan from Bluegg and myself.
The space inside is quirky too and we find people come along because they are interested in seeing the venue as well as what Fiftyone3 has to offer. People often stay around for drinks after the event formally finishes at 7pm which must mean they like the place!
The idea behind the club is that it is very different to stuffy, suited, business card-swapping events; it’s more about helping those in the first few years of their careers to build a solid base of contacts. I think between the four of us who set the club up, we can probably name everyone that attends the events. Current membership is up to more than 200 people and we attract around 100 people to each event.
Do you think it’s good value for money? The Attic gave us a good rate for our events which means we are able to offer our members food and drinks included in the entry price.
Why did you decide to use The Attic to hold your events? It’s difficult to find new and interesting venues in Cardiff city centre that will give us exclusive use of a space on a Friday afternoon. The roof terrace in the Attic attracted us first as we thought it would be perfect for our Summer BBQ events.
How often have your events? Our events are every other month and we’ve been using The Attic venue since July this year.
It’s really easy to book - we deal directly with Emma who arranges everything for us. They have put on a delicious BBQ on the roof terrace for us at our last two events which was great value.
TRIED & TRUSTED For more information on Fiftyone3, please contact Caroline Holmes on 029 2064 6840 or 07786 642 881 caroline.holmes@workingword.co.uk

With a thriving, successful business in Penarth, Jodie Tanner, owner of The Queen B was finding ironing more and more difficult to fit into her schedule. She turned to the services of The Laundry Rooms, a professional washing, drying and ironing company based in Barry to help solve her dilemma.
TRIED & TESTED How did you hear about The Laundry Rooms? I have used The Laundry Rooms for a number of years now from when it was previously Anne’s Ironing Service. It was recommended to me by a friend and I don’t think there is any better form of advert than ‘word of mouth’. What services do they provide for you? I use the ironing service on a regular basis - they iron my bedding. I love that ‘just out of the packet’ feel that I couldn’t achieve myself. They also steam iron any ‘special’ items and all of my husband’s shirts, which are returned individually hung and covered. On an ad hoc basis, I also have my dry cleaning done with them. Also, on occasions when I have returned from holiday, I have given them four cases of washing, drying and ironing, which is done and put away in days instead of it hanging around for weeks! What difference has using The Laundry Rooms made to your life? I am a busy businesswoman and I find the service that they provide invaluable. In particular, I don’t even need to go out of my way to go to them. They pick up from my house and drop off two days later. It is a small price to pay to remove some of the ‘stress’ from my very busy schedule.
Would you recommend them? Absolutely. Customer service is a real passion of mine and you get bags of it at The Laundry Rooms. They have taken the time to understand my personal needs and are always willing to accommodate them. This interview cannot go without a mention of ‘the boys’. They are a credit to the business, always polite and totally professional.
Jodie owns The Queen B boutique on Stanwell Road in Penarth. ‘The boys’ Jodie mentions are the young men who work at The Laundry Rooms. Part of their job is to pick up and drop off the laundry.

As soon as the clocks go back and the days become shorter, time becomes a valuable asset for Rob Hodge that there just isn’t enough of.
TEMPUS FUGIT From the beginning of Autumn to the end of Spring is the period where our prior planning and preparation gets put into practice and it’s amazing how fast that time will go by.
I try to give myself a break in October to charge the batteries and get myself ready for a winter of gardening through short days and the wet weather. Obviously, the weather will dictate where and what we do in the garden, but if you want the dividends that winter gardening pays off then you have to make the most of it and put the effort in. The first period takes us up to Christmas where we hope our gardening Christmas present wish list comes to fruition. Don’t forget that Christmas floral decorations look fantastic inside and outside the house. Christmas wreaths on the front door (homemade of course) show our visitors how important our gardens and gardening skills are especially when we show off by using the plant names and varieties. The gardening work in this period is all down to clearing and cleaning. Herbaceous borders should be cut back with all of the old top growth composted, our bulbs are planted and our lawns are spiked and scarified.
After the Christmas break it’s time to work off all that excess eating and drinking and prepare the garden for the coming spring. This period in the garden is where plants are dormant and we are given some respite from the never-ending battle against weeds. All our major pruning of trees and shrubs can be done now and it’s a case of head down and look forward to the first signs of spring where snowdrops and crocus show us that spring is arriving. In hindsight we’ve all kept notebooks and taken photos and listed all the alterations that we need to make to achieve that perfect oasis that becomes the envy of all our friends and family.
“The perfect oasis that becomes the envy of all our friends and family.”
In reality we may only get to alter one item on our wish list, move that shed, repair that crazy paving, clean the glass house etc, etc. For me it’s more like reshaping borders, reducing hedges, redesigning more imaginative planting schemes, reseeding or returfing lawns or sometimes uncovering another part of a lost garden that’s been hidden for fifty years. The plan is, work out how much time you have, what jobs are achievable in that time and just make the most of it. For me, it’s all of that but multiplied by twenty gardens. If you don’t achieve it all don’t worry there is no specific cut off date when spring arrives and the winter work ends, you will know soon enough when the grass starts growing and everything starts moving forward, and there is nothing stopping you in employing somebody to get it done for you!

“There is always a new challenge that presents itself with serviced offices and I look forward to the fact that everyday is different from the last.
THE LAST WORD This issue, Vale Life talks with James Mason, Manager of The Business Centre. James talks about his life and gives us an insight into his role running one of the Vale’s busiest serviced office facilities. Please tell us about where you work? I work at The Business Centre in the Vale of Glamorgan where we provide flexible serviced office space, virtual offices and conference/meeting room hire with a five star service. Describe your role there... I'm the Centre Manager, therefore my days vary and new challenges arise daily! My main role is to ensure that a high quality of service is being provided to all clients and future clients that are part of The Business Centre. I would overlook everything that is going on on a daily basis ranging from reception work, conferencing, accounts, marketing and sales, whilst still running the business side of things. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy working with the staff we currently have working at The Business Centre and the clients who choose to pay for services with us. There is always a new challenge that presents itself with serviced offices and I look forward to the fact that everyday is different from the last.
What’s your favourite place in the Vale? The Business Centre of course! What did you learn from your parents? I’ve learnt a lot from my parents; honesty, always work hard to achieve what you want and to treat others how you would like to be treated. I would say the main point would be to be happy - happiness is key! Who inspires you? People like Alan Sugar and Richard Branson from a business perspective, in the way that they have that drive and determination to still do well and run a successful business even though they’ve done it many times before, succeeded and could easily decide to call it a day now! I would also say my parents, both in different ways but the guidance and upbringing they have given me has set me on the right path! Three things you’d change about the world if you could... Recession, recession, recession!
Sum yourself up in three words... Hardworking, ambitious and honest. You may not know this but... I’m actually very good at long distance running! I used to run for the county when I was 16 but never really had the determination to go further with it! I was proud to complete the Cardiff Half Marathon this year though, for a great cause - Barnardos Children’s Charity! In a nutshell my philosophy is.... The harder you work, the more you will achieve. We all receive setbacks but its how we deal and come back from them that counts.
