WELCOME Autumn is one of our most favourite times of the year. We’ve recently rediscovered walking and, while we love the summer, the autumn colours just seem to encourage us to step out even more. The valleys have some beautiful spaces so there’s never been a better time to get out there. Walking is good for your health and good for the soul. So get your walking shoes on and go for it! In this issue we interview Owain Mealing who lives in Ynyshir. Owain is passionate about eye care and he is a Director of Davies & Jones Optometrists and practice in several locations across the valleys. Our Hiraeth - A Photographic Legacy feature is a small selection of the thousands of images yet to be exposed. We’re so grateful to Jon Pountney for letting us, and our readers, a small glimpse inside the box. We also feature Acorns Nurseries. This brilliant business was born, as most good enterprises are, out of necessity. Twenty-five years ago Sue and Martyn Hogg were looking for a nursery and, after being disappointed by what they found, decided to start their own. We chat to Acorns Nurseries about their success.
We interview boxer Nathan Cleverly. This interview was conducted before Nathan’s last bout so it’s an interesting insight into his mind prior to his World Title defence. Nathan’s a very bright lad so, whatever he chooses to do next, you can sure his decision will be the smart one. And, in case we might need a good dentist after that, we meet top dentist Gareth Jones and long time patient, businessman and entrepreneur, Paul Bailey. We hope you enjoy autumn as much as we do. See you again soon. Jenifer Hobbs-Roberts Editor 07766 106 701 jennifer@valleyslife.co.uk uk.linkedin.com/in/jenniferhobbsroberts

LLANTRISANT
Local artist reaches for the stars We meet incredibly talented people on our travels around the valleys which has more than its fair share of creative types. Richard Bennewith is not only a talented web designer but when he’s not clicking away at his computer, he’s a pretty dab hand with a pencil. Richard says, “I studied Fine Art at Plymouth University where the actual process of teaching fine art stopped me from drawing as they push abstraction so much.
I haven’t drawn for fifteen years but got back into it recently. Most of the work has been commissions; dogs, children, portraits. I’m a keen carp fisherman so I’ve done some fishy ones too. People can also contact me at Model House where I also teach drawing.”
Richard’s Anthony Hopkins portrait has been accepted at the Open Art Exhibition this summer at The Rhondda Heritage Park. Richard Bennewith Portrait & Fine Artist www.facebook.com/RichardBennewithArtist

Popped in there recently. What a great gallery they have with some excellent artists on show. Well worth a visit.
If you’ve ever had to (and who hasn’t?) arrange for a car to go in for a service or MOT, you’ll know what a complete pain that is. Arranging time off work and being without the car, there has to be better way.
They have a healthy diary of drama, dance, music, comedy, exhibitions, opera, theatre, workshops and classes. And there’s a bar. Cheers! www.pontardaweartscentre.com

On one occasion, they collected our car from the house and dropped it back same day. For our second vehicle, they came to our office in the morning and then dropped it back in the afternoon. Booking was easy and the costs were no more than we’d experienced the conventional way (in one case more competitive). The CollectMyWheels.com staff are really friendly and helpful too so you’ll be in safe hands (at least from our experience) and they have plenty of great testimonials on their website. CARDIFF CIT Y HALL
Sue and Martyn Hogg
Acorns sing their way to success On Saturday19th October Acorns Nurseries celebrated their 25th anniversary in style, by hosting a party at Cardiff City Hall. It was attended by all staff from their nurseries in Nantgarw, Cardiff, Newport and Bristol. Cherie Wilson, Director, and the team of managers, assistant managers and teachers have been meeting up to twice a week to create the Acorns choir especially for the 25th anniversary event. It was a huge surprise to staff and fellow Co-Directors Sue and Martyn Hogg who founded the chain of Day Nurseries in October 1988.
The team started with a flash mob performance of Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen, followed by a powerful and confident performance of songs which included Raise your Glass by Pink and Rule the World by Take That. Acorns worked with Sing and Inspire a local company who completely understood the ethos and culture of the company. The choir have been inspired by singing coach Steff Evans who is so energetic, enthusiastic and uplifting.
5
Cherie said, “I feel it has added real value to the workplace and has been an excellent team building experience as we all contributed to the three part harmonies. We knew it would be a massive challenge but one we were all passionate to take part in. Singing with the children is such a big part of nursery life therefore we felt there would be no better way to celebrate our 25th Birthday.” See feature on page 8
Davies & Jones Optometrists invest in cutting-edge technology to ensure patients receive the highest standards of care.
Owain Mealing lives in Ynyshir in, as he puts it, “a small house with a big view.” His passion is eye care and he is a Director of Davies & Jones Optometrists.
The
Owain, 29, joined Davies & Jones Optometrists in 2005 following three years training at City University London, graduating with the Cantor & Nissel Prize for best undergraduate clinical work. Owain is passionate about eye care and has a special interest in glaucoma - he works one day a week at Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s glaucoma clinic and glaucoma triage unit. What’s your role at Davies & Jones? Since I started as a director in 2008, I have overseen the introduction of new technology to the business. Davies & Jones have always had cutting edge equipment; they introduced the first digital retinal camera in Wales in 1994. I can remember being imaged on this as a patient. Many of the local consultants came to visit and cast their eyes over this wonderful piece of kit - they were all impressed. Since then we have continued to invest in the latest technology to improve our detection and diagnostic abilities.
“ We never stop learning - there’s always a new challenge, a new patient - it’s this that makes life interesting and, ultimately, most rewarding.” 6
Visionary What are your aspirations for Davies & Jones? Davies and Jones will continue to provide cutting edge eye care to all our patients, whether NHS or private. We’ve developed a holistic approach to eye care that has served us and patients well. I think the way we get to know clients sets us apart. We’re on first name terms with many - it really is a cradle to grave service as my family and I have experienced over the last thirty years. I think my core objective is to ensure that this close contact with patients isn’t compromised in any way and that we develop and improve our services.
We also have links with secondary care providers, and are lucky to have local consultants holding private clinics in Talbot Green and in Porth. Many private hospitals are under equipped for diagnosis and can be almost inaccessible to patients living in the valleys. Being able to provide private ophthalmology means patients can get their cataracts and other eye conditions sorted out quickly. It’s a great privilege to be able to offer this kind of comprehensive service.
What’s the most rewarding part of your work? Detecting eye disease that would result in blindness and getting a patient treated in a timely fashion is just hugely rewarding. Using skills that I continue to hone day in day out to enhance a patient’s care is what makes my job most enjoyable. The fact is, we never stop learning - there’s always a new challenge, a new patient - it’s this that makes life interesting and, ultimately, most rewarding. For the last three years we have been offering orthokeratology (or Orthok, it’s easier to say!). It is a completely reversible non-invasive treatment for short-sightedness that involves sleeping in specially designed contact lenses that, when removed in the morning, mean a patient does not have to wear contacts or spectacles for clear vision during the course of the day. It has really taken off and is no more expensive, or risky, than wearing daily, disposable contact lenses. This means that patients can enjoy safe, clear and comfortable vision all through the day. 7
What’s your vision for the future? We never stop learning. That’s one of the things I love about Davies & Jones. There’s a real thirst for knowledge all our optometrists undergo more than the basic optometry qualifications and each develops special interests in addition to the day to day eye examination.

In 1988 Sue Hogg was looking at nurseries with a friend, and couldn’t find what she was looking for. So, along with husband Martyn, decided to start their own and Acorns was born. 25 years later they now have 12 nurseries throughout Cardiff, Newport and Bristol and have looked after thousands of children.
From Little Acorns How long has Acorn Nurseries been established? Acorns was established in 1988 by Sue and Martyn Hogg, our first nursery opened on the ground floor of our home on Oakfield Steet and was registered for 16 children. Today we have twelve nurseries in Cardiff, Newport and Bristol and are registered for 764 children each day. We are delighted to be celebrating our 25th Anniversary in October this year, and very proud of the fact that many of our staff have been with us since the early days of Acorns, in fact some of the children we cared for have now come back to join our team as Nursery Nurses and we even care for their children! When and why was Acorn Nurseries opened in Parc Nantgarw? Acorns Parc Nantgarw was opened in September 2012, to provide childcare for those parents making the journey into Cardiff from the Valleys and surrounding areas.
Registered for 60 children each day we work in partnership with Coleg y Cymoedd and a percentage of spaces are allocated for students and staff at the college. A state of the art nursery with purpose-made equipment and light spacious playrooms, Acorns Parc Nantgarw is our first eco-friendly nursery building, even our rainwater is recycled! We will be celebrating our first birthday on 24th September with a party for the children and lots of surprises and special guests!
What do you believe sets you apart from other nurseries? Our philosophy has always been that we provide the same standards of care and dedication that we would want for our own children. Our nurseries offer a home from home environment with plenty of natural light and soft background music, All equipment and resources are of the finest quality and are chosen for their play and learning potential. 8
Our spacious gardens have covered and open play areas, meaning that outdoor play is always fun whatever the weather! The ethos and culture we work hard to create is that Acorns is a place of fun, escape and imagination where children are nurtured and encouraged to learn through discovery and invention. Why do you think parents choose Acorn Nurseries? Many of our parents come to us via recommendation from family, friends and work colleagues. Parents need to be able to leave their child knowing they are safe, secure, content, nurtured and cared for in a happy, relaxed environment.
We have an open door policy meaning that parents can visit us at any time, and prior to starting we offer settling in sessions to meet the individual needs of every child, so that parents and children are happy and content before they even start with us.
“ We have an open door policy meaning that parents can visit us at any time.”
We work in partnership with parents and have regular Stay and Play days, Parents Evenings, and Sports Days. We hold Graduation and Christmas concerts, celebrate Grandparents Day, as well as celebrating many different cultures and festivals. Our recent Father’s afternoon was a huge success and the children love the opportunity to show their parents the fun they have each day and watch their Dads taking part in Cooking and Arts and Crafts! What age groups do you accommodate? Our Nurseries are registered to care for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years, although longer maternity leave means that many babies don’t start with us until the age of 7 months these days. Our Early Years Teachers ensure the transition from Acorns to “Big School” is smooth by following the Framework for Children’s Learning Curriculum used in schools throughout Wales.
“ Acorns is a place of fun, escape and imagination.”
Tell us about your team at Parc Nantgarw… We have a strong, well established team at Parc Nantgarw headed by Sarah Eagle, Nursery Manager, who has been employed by Acorns for over 20 years. Daniella her Assistant is on hand each day and they work closely with the Directors on a daily basis. Their team of Nursery Nurses, Housekeepers, and Cook assist with the smooth running of the nursery and ensure that each child receives the very best care at all times.

“Not many hotels can boast such beautiful surroundings as Llangoed Hall as it nestles confidently in the beautiful Wye Valley.”
Prints Charming Sometimes we all want a little luxury. Somewhere to relax and escape from the day-to-day grind, so when my wife suggested we take a weekend break at Llangoed Hall half an hour north of the heads of the valleys my initial thoughts weren’t particularly positive.
The first thing I did was take a look at the website and, I’ll be perfectly honest, my initial impression was that it looked a little stuffy - chintzy even. Anyway, she seemed keen on the idea and I was more than willing to embrace the occasion as we both needed a well deserved bit of rest and relaxation. We took our time driving to Llangoed on this particularly gorgeous sunny day in July. Partly because it was so gorgeous, as we eased our way over the Beacons but also, if I’m honest, because I still wasn’t convinced this was a great idea. There’s a long drive down towards the hotel but it’s only once you make the final turn to arrive head on that its sheer magnificence becomes apparent. It really is quite stunning. Not many hotels can boast such beautiful surroundings either as it nestles confidently in the beautiful Wye Valley. 10
As we headed inside, any thoughts of stuffiness disappeared very quickly. This is an exceptional hotel. Everything about it exudes quality. If you love art, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven - it’s everywhere, and it’s of exceptional quality. Whistler, Herman Dudley Murphy and James Cowie adorn the walls - it’s on par with a national museum. It’s only a little later that, after chatting with staff, I realise it was once the home of Sir Bernard Ashley, husband of Laura Ashley and their influence becomes obvious. The interiors are truly gorgeous with rich fabrics and prints, and glistening chandeliers. Our bedroom, apparently, used to be Sir Bernard’s and enjoyed commanding views down the valley to Llyswen and its church in the distance.
“The interiors are truly gorgeous with rich fabrics and prints, and glistening chandeliers.” In the afternoon we took a short drive down to Hay-On-Wye. I hadn’t been to Hay for thirty years and I can tell you it has lost none of its charm - it really is a must visit. Back to Llangoed and a fantastic shower in our beautiful bathroom and we’re ready for dinner - and what a dinner. The food here is simply fantastic. My wife loved Llangoed Hall. For me, it was simply one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had in ten years. The staff are superb. I’ve not felt so ‘at home’ at a hotel for many years. They really do take good care of you and nothing seems too much trouble. Llangoed Hall is no ordinary hotel. It’s really something quite special and to think I thought it was going to be stuffy. How wrong could I be? Llangoed is officially one of my most favourite hotels in the world. 11

The South Wales Valleys has produced some great fighters over the years. They’re household names, but not many have also been world champions while studying for a degree at university. Valleys Life talks to Nathan Cleverly.
The Clever One When did you first start boxing? How old were you? I started boxing when I was eleven. I just had an instinct really, to fight. I was very competitive as a kid - got involved in a few street fights and I had an inclination to go to a boxing gym to start fighting. When I stepped into the boxing ring I could smell the leather and it gripped me straight away. That ‘Rocky’ feeling was awesome. What inspired you? It was just my background really. I was just a kid and wanted to do something with my life. There were no facilities in the area at the time - there’s not much more there now either, but I knew that I just wanted to achieve something because I was a sports fanatic and I had a talent for fighting. That’s what inspired me really.
What has been your most challenging opponent to date and why? Hardest opponent, umm… Mohameddi was the trickiest because I went in to the ring probably unfit. I had a bad training camp and that was a tricky night’s work - very awkward. Toughest fight? There’s a few, but Tony Oakey for the Commonwealth title would be up there. I was 21, my first twelve round fight. He chucked everything at me - he was a strong man and I could feel his strength. He made me work very, very hard. That was a tough night’s work.
“I started boxing when I was eleven. I just had an instinct really, to fight. I was very competitive.”
How did your parents feel about you getting into boxing? My Mam wouldn’t let me go to the gym for a few years. I was asking from a young age and eventually my Dad took me. That’s how it all began. Who was your boxing hero growing up? It would have to be Joe Calzaghe. Joe was world champion when I first went to the gym. He’s from similar surroundings in the Valleys - he was a big inspiration. I’ve always liked Oscar De La Hoya too, the American fighter. I remember seeing him when I was young and thinking ‘I love his style’, so he was another favourite. 14
What attributes do you think a world class boxer should have? The ability to take a punch - to take a good shot - to be resilient. In boxing you’re going to get hit and how you respond to getting hit can make or break you. Some people crumble, some leave the sport, some get knocked out. If you can’t take punishment then it’s not a sport to hang around in you know? How important to you are your supporters, particularly those from your home country? It’s great and they give me a big boost. It makes me believe what I’m doing is very worthwhile. When you get the back-up from your fans, it inspires you and keeps you pushing because you don’t want to let them down, you want to keep proving them right, it’s definitely a big help.
At what point in your career did you think you could become a world class fighter? Before I put on a set of boxing gloves, I said I’d be world boxing champ believe it or not. I’d never chucked a pair of boxing gloves on in my life and I said I’m going to be world champion. I had that strong inner-belief from such a very young age.
“My favourite former Welsh fighter has to be Joe Calzaghe.” Who would you like to fight in the future? It would have to be Bernard Hopkins before he retires. With this next fight, we’ll make that fight happen before he gets out of the sport.
If you could change one thing about the sport, what would that be? Bring back an extra three rounds to make it fifteen.
What’s your best punch? I would say my right uppercut, I love that. That’s definitely one of my best shots, I feel comfortable throwing it and I’ve got a good success rate with that.
If you weren’t a professional boxer, what would you love to do? A professional football player was always a possibility, that was my second favourite sport. I’m really passionate about football, I enjoyed football when I was young, I suppose my heart was set on a career in sport.
Do you have a favourite Welsh boxer? My favourite former Welsh fighter has to be Joe. Current? Myself. How do you feel about the next fight? I feel good - mentally I feel well. Physically? I feel great. I’m ready to go. Training has all gone to plan. I’m ready for the biggest fight of my life.
What was your favourite fight? Probably, Brancalion for the European. I went in to the fight feeling ill - I was really tired but I had to go for it. I went for it and it turned out to be the best night of my life. I performed excellently and stopped him in five rounds to win the European title. At that point I was Commonwealth, British and European champion - that was special. What’s been your favourite fight to watch of all time? I would say myself versus Danny MacIntosh. When I watch that back on TV the atmosphere in York Hall was magical. It’s such a small arena and it’s just loud, a great atmosphere. There were a few words said before the fight and I went in there and smashed him to bits to become British champion while studying in university. I loved that fight. 15
Sum yourself up in three words... Intelligent. Relaxed. And I’ll go for… hard working... Oh, that’s four words! Three tips for up-and-coming boxers... Enjoy the sport, that’s very important. Fitness, make sure you’re fit. Stick to the basics. Nathan Cleverly Professional boxer Light-heavyweight - 12st 7lbs, 175lbs Titles gained British, Commonwealth, European and WBO World Champion www.nathancleverly.com
While Jon Pountney was working on a photography project in the Rhondda, he didn’t realise that a chance discovery would have such a huge impact in his life.
H iraeth A PHOTOGR APHIC LEGACY Harold Wilson in Ebbw Vale
After a conversation working in Cwmparc, Jon was introduced to a local photographers work that has inspired him to preserve and promote a huge collection of images of Valleys life. Jon tells us more… How did you come to be in possession of the photographs? I’ve been a professional photographer for thirteen years. I’m also a multi-discipline artist - I use video, painting, photography and sculpture to create my work. I was working on a personal photography project on the Valleys in my favourite locations Cwmparc and Treorchy. I got chatting to someone about photography and was told about a local photographer, David Thickins, who had worked in the area for many years. After a little detective work, I was very surprised to be united with his work in Treorchy Library.
David sadly passed away a couple of years ago. I’m still not sure whether he was an amateur or pro, as the quality of the work is so good. He lived in Cwmparc, but covered all of the Valleys. I’m still finding out information about him so if anyone has anything they’d like to share, I’d love to hear more. What time period do they cover? I reckon we are looking at 1963 to 1976. Interestingly the images start in medium format film, and then move into 35mm. The quality of the medium format negatives is particularly impressive. How many images are there? I think we could be looking at more than 15,000!
“I’m keen for as many people as possible to see these pictures”
Why has this collection inspired you? The forensic detail and coverage of the area is extremely interesting. The work ethic behind such a large body of work is very inspiring, especially when you consider that David was working in film. Digital is so much easier these days. What are your aspirations for the collection? I’m keen for as many people as possible to see these pictures, in the way that the Vivian Maier archive has brought film photography to life for so many people. It’s a unique journal on a time of huge change in south Wales, as well as containing some spine-tinglingly good single pictures. Of all the images you have looked at so far, which is your favourite? The lady holding a drawing of a UFO is exceptional I think. Are there any images that you find particularly moving? I have found a number of pictures of Aberfan that, so far, I haven’t had the heart to look at. Will there be an exhibition in the future? I hope to create a traveling show that will visit towns across the Valleys.

Open any woman’s magazine and you can’t fail to notice adverts for cosmetic dentistry... they’re crammed with them! The obligatory before and after pictures remind us that however bad our teeth, the Hollywood smile is attainable. One company stands out as the absolute leader in this field and that is The Parade Specialist Dental Care.
Centre oF Excellence What do you believe makes The Parade stand out from the crowd? Without doubt, it has to be the quality of dentistry we can offer. We are the only fully private; multi-specialist practice in Wales, where we have four GDC registered accredited Specialists in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics and Orthodontics.
We continually invest in technology and our staff. We have up-to-date digital x-rays, a CT scanner which allows us to have highly detailed 3D images of bone and supporting tissues for perfect diagnosis and careful surgical planning and an endodontic microscope. Our hygienist services are second to none thanks to latest Periowave technology. Does all of this expertise and technology mean high prices? We are mindful of the current economic climate and do our best to offer competitive prices.
We spoke to Gareth Jenkins, Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics Implant Surgeon on why he believes that the practice can boast this impressive title. What are your qualifications Gareth? BDS (Wales); MScD (Wales); FDS, RCS (ED). I am a specialist in Restorative Dentistry and a Prosthodontics Implant Surgeon. After qualifying in 1970 at Cardiff Dental School and obtaining a Fellowship in Dental surgery in Edinburgh, I opened The Parade Specialist Dental Centre in 1975, while continuing to teach on a part-time basis at The Dental School, where I obtained my Master of Dental Science. I have over thirty five years experience in advanced restorative treatments, such as implants and precision attachments and, during my career, have placed over 6,000 dental implants.
I am a past President of The British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and of the Association of Dental Implantology as well as being a Fellow and Diplomat of The International Congress of Implantology. I am also a past Chairman of the south Wales and south west of England Private Practitioners Group. I’ve written many published articles and a book on Advanced Restorative Dentistry. I lecture both nationally and internationally, and I was honoured in Washington DC at an international conference for my contribution to aesthetic dentistry.

Ever since we were kids, the Sunday drive has been a tradition. Sometimes to the beach, sometimes to the country, and usually, for Sunday lunch.
Sumptuous Sunday Lunch Growing up, Sunday lunch was usually the flip of a coin between our nan’s house in Mountain Ash or a country pub. It’s a tradition that we’ve happily carried on as adults. If, like me, Sunday lunch is your thing, then you’ll probably enjoy discovering new places. The valleys has plenty of good eateries (and plenty of personal favourites) for ‘Sunday best’ but this time we’re travelling a little further afield - to Cowbridge, a mere half an hour drive from Caerphilly. Cowbridge is one of those places that people perceive to be further from the valleys than it actually is. It has several really good restaurants and they’re all very different - it’s true to say that Cowbridge is very popular with us valleys folk. Arboreal is delight on the eyes. It’s a mix of contempory design using lots of quirky accessories and recycled materials, it’s a welcome relief from the pseudo country pub interiors that are usually forced on us.
Arboreal is a quality offering. I’m a great believer in that you get what you pay for which, in this case, was superbly cooked food, beautifully presented. My wife’s rib-eye steak was beautifully cooked but the star of the show was my slow-cooked pork shoulder – apparently it had been cooked very slowly overnight and literally melted in my mouth. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by the way it cooks its vegetables and ours were perfect, especially the beautifully tender carrots and onions. Our lad enjoys a beef dinner but, on this occasion, he went for a perfectly cooked Margherita pizza. This was cooked in Arboreal’s famous open oven. Our desserts were simply superb. My wife’s chocolate brownie stack was rich and very chocolatey and, she informed me, “quite indulgent.” I chose the French classic - apple tarte tatin, and I’m very glad I did. This has to be one of the best I’ve had. The pastry just melted in the mouth and the home-made ice cream was creamy and silky.
“The pastry just melted in the mouth and the home-made ice cream was creamy and silky.” 25
Verdict? Fabulous food - good portion sizes. The wine was very good - service was excellent and top it off, all the herbs used are grown in Arboreal’s very own allotment. Arboreal delivered a great Sunday lunch experience, but not only is Arboreal a superb restaurant, it is also accustomed to hosting private parties and is an ideal music venue. We’ll certainly visit again in the near future.

Since taking on their first property in January 2013, Holiday Cottages now have a fantastic collection of properties across Wales. We recently caught up with Managing Director, James Morris, to hear more about their expanding portfolio.
Cottage Industry We also developed websites in both French and German for our overseas customers, to make finding the perfect cottage even easier! We have in-house marketing, design and web development teams working tirelessly to bring our customers and owners the very best experience, whether they are booking a holiday or letting a property. Last year we were awarded Best Accommodation Website by Travolution - our award-winning website received more than four million visitors last year, and our properties have a presence on many other websites which maximises exposure. Even though our portfolio and team has grown over the years, we still strive to maintain the family values that are at the heart of Holiday Cottages. What do you love most about Wales? I love the beautiful bays, the majestic mountains and, of course, the sweeping valleys. You have to love your work and I think it helps if we love the areas of the country we let in. Tell us a little bit about Holiday Cottages? We are a family run business and have been successfully letting properties across Wales and the South West’s popular holiday destinations for more than 35 years. Recently, we have expanded our portfolio across the rest of the UK, and currently have an expanding collection of over 1,500 holiday cottages. How are you expanding your Welsh portfolio? We have a dedicated Regional Manager for Wales, Emily, who travels all across Wales meeting with potential owners and works to build long-term relationships with our property owners. We invest a lot in promoting our properties and use a sophisticated, proven formula to promote them.
What can holidaymakers expect from a Welsh cottage holiday? Expect a warm welcome. You’ll soon fall in love with the local food and drink and ancient traditions just as much as the stunning landscape. Secondly, you will be guaranteed some spectacular sights. From the stunning beaches of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, to the emerald beauty of Wales’ three National Parks, and up in the white capped mountains of Snowdon, you’ll be blown away by the magnificent views. I always pack my sturdy walking boots so that I can get out and explore as much of this beautiful country at every opportunity. What sets you apart from other holiday cottage companies? We move with the times; technology is advancing at pace, and understanding the ways holidaymakers search for their cottage breaks has changed. Browsing with tablets and mobile phones is a much more user-friendly experience these days, and with this in mind, at the end of last year and early this year we launched our apps for both iPhone and Android.
“You’ll soon fall in love with the local food and drink and ancient traditions just as much as the stunning landscape.” 29
All of our properties are still personally inspected by a dedicated team of managers and we work hard to develop and nurture continuing relationships between the company and our property owners.

Just think what your child could achieve. Meddyliwch beth all eich plentyn ei gyflawni. Anna Ryder Richardson Adopted at 6 weeks old Cafodd ei mabwysiadu pan oedd yn 6 wythnos oed
Many children are unable to live with their birth family. These children will have come to the attention of the Local Authority because their families struggled to care for them. Whilst adoption has had its share of bad press, when a child is placed with adoptive parents, not only will he or she find the love and care that they deserve but also the environment in which to thrive and achieve. This certainly can be said for Jamie Baulch British, sprint athlete and television presenter.
REACH FOR THE STARS How old were you when you were adopted? I was three months old.
What are your earliest memories of your adoption? I don’t really remember my parents ever telling me. How do you think adoption has affected your life? I’ve had the best life ever! My parents are just the greatest people you can meet. They have always been supportive and amazing. I’m very lucky. Why do you feel adoption is so important? Adoption is very important as it gives children the chance to be part of a forever family. Currently there is a shortage of adopters in South Wales. The Adopt Wales Cymru campaign aims to change this. Why did you want to get involved? I feel very privileged that I’m in a position to use my profile as an adopted child to such a great cause. Adopting a child is such an amazing thing to do. Without these organisations, I don’t know where I would be and perhaps I wouldn’t have been placed in such a loving, nurturing environment.
“My parents are just the greatest people you can meet. They have always been supportive and amazing. I’m very lucky.”
You’ve been incredibly successful in your career. Do you think having a loving family helped? My family have had a major part in my successful career. Without them I don’t think I would have made it. It just shows how important a good upbringing is. What message would you give to anyone thinking about adoption? Do it! You are so needed! People like me need people like you. My parents have had a great time raising me and I’m sure they are proud with the result. That could be your story too! For more information please visit www.Adopt-Wales.co.uk 32

“My husband had a hip replacement operation last week at The Vale Hospital. He seems to me to be recovering at a remarkable rate and is now at home and walking around and climbing stairs and showering. I think it is amazing! I am writing to thank you for the lovely care we received. I say we because I was asked to stay the night and I think I received just as much care as I would have as a patient. I am most grateful and enjoyed my short stay in hospital! Mrs ST, Cardiff

The L ast Word People generally go into businesses that they feel passionate about. This can certainly be said for Ruth Benjamin Green, owner of Benjamin’s Interiors, on Penarth Road, Cardiff. We managed a quick chat with Ruth to find out more.
Where do your customers come from? Far and wide - we have many loyal local customers, the M4 corridor, west Wales and Swansea. We also sell online and these orders come from all over the uk. Where do you shop in the Vale? I love The Queen B in Penarth and also trust Ben at Nolton Shoes for our Hunter wellies! What makes you happy? Knowing that my family are happy and safe. I am also very lucky to have found my soul mate in Andrew - he’s my rock and my best friend and of course my business is my life’s blood. Seeing it go from strength to strength just makes me feel so proud. When you love what you do with passion it’s a pleasure to come to work. I have a wonderful team around me who help make Benjamin’s Interiors the best furniture shop around. What is Benjamin’s Interiors? We are an unusual and quirky interior shop offering a diverse range of furniture and interior products. You can find something here to suit all tastes, whether that’s country, shabby chic, ultra modern high gloss, venetian, pine or oak. There’s also a huge range of lighting, mirrors and accessories. We also offer a bespoke furniture service which includes free standing kitchens, lounge and dining furniture all of which can be painted in your favourite Farrow & Ball paint finishes. Benjamin’s Interiors has everything to make your house a home. Who is at home? Myself, my husband Andrew and my daughter Naomi, although she is away a lot as she is studying at Birmingham university. Two German Shepherds, a cat, horses, chickens, ducks... oh and don’t forget the parrot Coco! We live in a converted coach house on a farm. Describe your home? I love a home that is glamorous and chic and our home reflects that. Our home is furnished with items mostly bought from Benjamin’s, of course!
What makes Benjamin’s different to other furniture showrooms? Maybe it’s the great selection we have here. We source our items from Sweden, China, India and Thailand.
Sum yourself up in three words... Driven, passionate, loyal. You may not know this but... We are open seven days a week and offer free interior design advice, but shhh don’t tell everyone!
We’re also proud that we source many of our products locally - our bespoke carpenters live locally and some of our sofas are from a family business in the UK. Or maybe it’s that customers feel happy to spend all morning or afternoon here browsing, given that it’s a very informal and relaxed environment. We even offer tea and biscuits! You were based at the Pumping Station - why the move? Yes, we were there for about twenty years and we had some really good times there but we basically outgrew it. We couldn’t find the right spot to relocate but then this unit came up and we went for it. It was a big gamble though, given that we increased our square footage by 400% but, if the demand is there, you have to supply it. 34
