There are lots of lovely places I have visited in Wales and hold fond memories of and for different reasons, but the most memorable for me are the days out as a child (some 40 years ago) to Porthcawl with my grandparents who were a huge part of my life and I really treasure these lovely memories.
onto a grid and pushed other coins along. My favourites were the lovely donkeys who worked hard giving all us children those trots along the beach. As we all became older, my grandfather stopped driving, but by then I had my driving licence so I would take them for days out instead. I enjoyed those days out as much as I know they did.
We would take Sunday School trips there and sometimes my grandfather would take us in his Morris 1000 and, no matter how we travelled, it would take us what seemed like ages to get there even though it is really only about 40 or so miles. We would visit Rest Bay and walk a long way from there along the water front into the main beach/attraction area. We would always spend some time on the beach and in the fairground, and my grandmother had a particular fondness of what she called ‘the diddlers’ - the penny slot machines where coins slid
Sadly both have since died, my grandmother being the last to go, but even when in her nineties I would still take her to Rest Bay as this was her favourite and she would walk the whole distance from Rest Bay along the waterfront and still play on ‘the diddlers’. She always had such a fantastic outlook on life and enjoyed every second of the days out that we had. These trips are always in my special memories, even now.
The views, atmosphere and weather conditions are never the same twice, they are constantly changing and never fail to invigorate and uplift me. At one end of the course, views of the Brecon Beacons can be seen, with Pen-y-Fan standing proud, and I feel as though I am miles away from civilisation and can be alone with my thoughts, whilst at the opposite end views over the town and down the valley are to be had and I am reminded that this beautiful and very special place is just minutes away from my home and the town I grew up in. How lucky am I?

Ynysangharad Park
Penyfan Pond
Llanwonno Church
My favourite place to visit is Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd.
My favourite place to visit is Penyfan Pond near Oakdale, Blackwood.
Living nearby for twenty years I have many memories of time spent there. Tweny years ago sitting with my Uni friends having a picnic in the summer, revising for my exams sat on the cricket pitch. Over the years taking my foster dog and my parents’ dogs for a run and playing ball on the cricket field.
A twenty minute walk around the pond is a treat all year round. In springtime, the wild flowers start blooming and the trees come into bud. The lambs in the nearby fields are born. Children can be seen at the water’s edge collecting tadpoles in jam jars.
One of my favourite places to visit is Llanwonno Church which sits in a lovely setting above Rhondda Fach and Ynysybwl, Mountain Ash in the Cynon Valley.
My husband trying to teach me how to play football after work in summer. Listening to rock bands on a Sunday afternoon. Visiting the many events that take place there - The Big Bite, seeing Tom Jones, vintage-car rallys and many more. And when I needed to think and get fit, running around this beautiful and calming park. It’s my happy place to escape to. Suzanne B Pontypridd
Summertime brings out the ducks with their ducklings in a line behind them crossing the pond. People paddle in the shallow end, have picnics and bbq’s. Walkers can be seen throughout the year and fishermen cast their lines in the fishing season, catching many a fine trout. A walk around the pond sets me up for the day. It’s a little corner of Wales that I am particularly fond of. Gill Thomas Blackwood
It has a picturesque churchyard which conveys a sense of peace and tranquility. Wonderful views of mountains and villages in the Rhondda Valleys and on a clear day, you can see the Channel coast. The forestry provides colourful scenery, green in spring and glowing in autumn colours. Heather on the hills, interesting walks – a favourite of mine is a river walk along the Cwm to view Pistyll Golau Waterfall. Llanwonno is a hidden gem that tempts you out of the car to enjoy the fresh air and the scenery. Mrs Pat Davies Abercynon

Passing of a local publishing legend Cardifff-born Stewart Williams, who died on 13 January 2011, was most prominently known as the editor and publisher of the popular Cardiff Yesterday series. His roots were in Ely, of which he was immensely proud. He maintained strong links with this area throughout his life, retaining membership of the Cardiff West End Social Club. He spent his early years working for Cardiff City Council in the engineers department, during which time he met his wife, Betty, who died in April 2009, a loss from which he never truly recovered. Stewart’s publishing career began at a young age with the production of bootleg programmes for Cardiff City of which he was a lifelong supporter. He moved from Cardiff City Council to join the Western Welsh Bus Company as publicity officer. During this period, his part-time publishing career really took off. His Vale Series (1959-62) comprised four volumes dedicated to telling the history of Glamorgan through short, lively contributions from a range of authors led, in no small way, by Professor Glyn Daniel.

Valleys Life magazine. Committed to quality.
This was followed by 12 volumes of Glamorgan Historian and an advisory role in the publication of the Glamorgan County History. Although these titles attracted a widespread readership, Stewart’s biggest legacy must be the legendary Cardiff series 36 volumes containing some 7,500 old photographs of Cardiff - recording the life of the city and its people. The success of this project enabled Stewart to leave the Western Welsh and make publishing his sole career. Operating from his home in Barry, it was a family affair, which meant Betty and their two children, Robert and Diane, turned their hands to all aspects from proofreading, to delivering copies of books, to individual subscribers.
Passionate about the valleys We are independent. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home-grown. Valleys Life magazine is written, designed and printed in the South Wales valleys. Our income is re-invested in the area. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking. “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Use it or lose it Business is the very lifeblood of any community. Without business, villages have no heart, towns have no centre, and cities have no soul. Please support the businesses who advertise in Valleys Life - without them there’d be no Valleys Life magazine. ❧ 8 ❧
Stewart’s other great love was jazz and he liked nothing more than to visit Ronnie Scott’s or jam with Victor Parker in Bute Street’s long gone Quebec pub. Stewart’s publishing activities spread beyond Cardiff and his pioneering books of places in old photographs included the Rhondda, Caerphilly, Ebbw Vale and Barry. Other projects included Grandmother Extraordinary, the life of Mary de la Beche Nicoll, and Vintage Buses & Trams in South Wales. Stewart published over 100 books - a pretty remarkable legacy for a one-man band - and has left a unique and lasting record for anyone with an interest in the history of Cardiff and South Wales.

Chef Matt Powell’s Oxtail recipe Slow braised Ty-Talgarth Organics’ oxtail, potato puree and oxtail juices (dandelion, bittercress and melting bone marrow salad) is a mouth-watering dish to try at home. Slow braised beef oxtail is great at this time of year. The salad included is optional but could also be served on its own as a starter. For the simple beef stock I have put a recipe up on my website at www.chefmattpowell.co.uk for anyone wishing to try it. You can make up batches and keep it in the freezer for use in other recipes. The potato puree can also be prepared the day before. I buy my beef main cuts and offal cuts locally from Ty-Talgarth Organics in Nantymoel - please see my website for a link to the main farm shop. They also have a new butcher’s shop in Bridgend on Nolton Street. INGREDIENTS (FOR 4 PEOPLE) 5kg organic oxtail/shin of beef Seasoned flour for dredging 100g plain flour Plenty of sea salt Fresh cracked black pepper T O F RY O F F T H E OX TA I L Rapeseed oil FOR THE MARINADE 1 bottle of good red wine 2 capfuls of red wine vinegar (I add this as the strong tannins help to break down the collagen in red meat and adds a nice sharpness to cut through the rich meat) 4 medium sized carrots 3 large leeks The inner part of 1 celery 12 medium sized shallots - all cut to the same size BOUQUET GARNI 4 bay leaves 4 sprigs of fresh thyme Peppercorns Tie this up in a piece of muslin cloth TO FINISH Reduced beef stock (see my website) Juices from the oxtail marinade
Method Bring the marinade to boil and flame the wine to burn off the alcohol then leave to cool right down. Pour this marinade onto the meat in a suitable container and leave to marinade for 12 hours. Pass the juices into a clean pan through a fine sieve and separate the meat from the vegetables and the herbs. Dry the meat with a piece of kitchen paper. Dredge lightly in the seasoned flour and shake off any excess. Heat a pan with a little oil and caramelise the pieces gently in the pan until you have a nice even colour all over. Take the pieces out of the pan and place them onto another piece of clean paper towel to remove excess oil. Lightly season the meat again. Again, clean out the pan and now caramelise the vegetables gently in a little more oil. Gently bring the wine marinade to the boil, skimming the top of any unwanted bits, then pass through muslin or a fine sieve. In a large casserole dish or tray, place the meat and then the vegetables and bouquet garni on top, followed by the marinade and the reduced beef stock. Season each layer gently as you go, with salt and fresh cracked pepper. Place the covered dish in the oven at gas mark 4/175˚C for about 5 hours or until the meat is falling apart. When the meat is ready, pass everything through a fine sieve to separate the meat from the vegetables and juices and then pass the braising juices through muslin again. Skim all the fat off the top and put these juices on to boil to reduce down to a glaze. Leave the oxtail to cool slightly and you will now have to take the meat off the oxtails and place in a separate bowl and mix with the still hot vegetables. Now pass the juices onto the meat and vegetables and gently heat them. Serve with the potato puree, and optional salad on the side.
“I buy my beef main cuts and offal cuts locally from Ty-Talgarth Organics in Nantymoel - they also have a new butcher’s shop in Bridgend on Nolton Street.” ❧ 10 ❧
FOR THE SALAD 40 nice leaves of dandelion 40 nice sprigs of wild bittercress 4 large pieces and 5 additional small pieces of beef marrow fat (I use only from organic reared animals)
Method Set grill to high. Gently reduce the beef reduction down by another half. Take off the heat and add the balsamic vinegar. Whisk the rapeseed oil in just to break up the liquids.
FOR THE DRESSING (OPTIONAL) 50ml beef reduction 10ml aged balsamic vinegar (I use a 50 year old vinegar) 30ml rapeseed oil Pinch of sea salt Fresh cracked black pepper
Just as you are ready to serve the dish quickly flash the pieces of marrowfat to heat and soften the fat. Season the dressing to taste with the sea salt and black pepper and dot around the leaves and marrowfat. P O TAT O P U R E E
For more information about Matt Powell and his recipes visit his excellent website at chefmattpowell.co.uk
If you wish, you can pass the potato onto a double layer of cling film and when it’s cooled you can roll it up and put it into the fridge the morning before or even the day before you are going to serve the oxtail. You can then finish with the cream, milk and butter closer to the time you are serving the whole dish.
❧ 11 ❧
INGREDIENTS 4 large Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes 100ml double cream 50ml full fat milk 100g un-salted butter Sea salt Ground white pepper
Method Set the oven to gas mark 5/190˚C. Bake the potatoes on a tray slowly until they are soft in the middle. Take them out of the oven and leave to cool a little. Take off the skins and quickly push the potato through a fine sieve. While you are getting on with pushing the potato through the sieve, gently heat the double cream, full fat milk and un-salted butter. Season to taste with the salt and pepper.
As celebrity endorsements go, it doesn’t get much better than one from Richard Jones, Cwmaman resident and bass player with the Stereophonics, and his lovely wife Gail.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES
“We wanted a kitchen with modern materials and classic tones.”
When we met Gail and Richard in the Welsh Valleys, it was only the second weekend they’d spent in their newly built home. As the house has impressive large ceilings and is finished in white, the couple wanted furniture that would complement the space. We asked Richard and Gail why they chose Spacefittingfurniture to design and install their new kitchen. Why did you decide to use Spacefittingfurniture? We’d visited some other showrooms and got the feeling that they didn’t offer that personal touch which we feel is pretty important. We felt that after visiting Steve and Claire’s showroom, the combination of their great ideas and perfect products could turn our vision into reality.
Did you have specific ideas on how you wanted the kitchen to look? We had a fair idea and with Steve’s help and knowledge, we got a really great design together. Steve was very good at turning our ideas into reality. Were you both happy with the finished product? We wanted our new kitchen to be a mix of modern materials with classic tones. We’ve only spent a limited time using the kitchen over the last couple of weeks, but we’ve found that its practicality and spacious storage is something that we have fallen for. Will it be a family kitchen or one used for entertaining? We will be using it as a functioning family kitchen which also doubles as an extension of our entertaining area.
Would you recommend Spacefittingfurniture? Definitely. We were really impressed with the service we received and would certainly use them again.

If you’re after the perfect wedding venue, The Celtic Manor has all the ingredients to make sure your wedding day is memorable (and you and your guests can enjoy a round of golf too). On page 20, we feature the beautiful Miskin Manor. Set in twenty-two acres of stunning countryside, this gorgeous country house hotel has a reputation for creating fairytale weddings. We speak to one happy couple who, for perfect day, made it their own. On page 23 we have Julie T, a must visit boutique for the ladies and Hawkes Essentials for the gentlemen. Martin Phillips from Porthcawl is an extremely talented portrait and wedding photographer and takes credit for the beautiful images on this page. Miskin Manor, a country house hotel with 43 individually designed bedrooms and 22 acres of glorious gardens, is, quite simply, a stunning venue in a beautiful and picturesque setting. It’s little wonder then that it’s one of the most popular venue choices in South Wales.
PERFECT DAY We spoke to happy couple Tom and Beccy Roberts who made Miskin Manor their own for a day.
Why did you choose Miskin Manor as your wedding venue? It’s such a stunning venue and we knew we wanted a summer wedding, so the beautiful gardens were a real attraction for both of us. We were particularly drawn to its intimacy and the fact that we could have both the ceremony and reception there as well as having plenty of rooms for guests to stay in. We had our ceremony in the Minstrel Gallery which feels very much like a little chapel, and afterwards our wedding breakfast and evening reception were in the Terrace Suite, which was perfect. Did you look at other venues? Yes, we looked at a number of venues in Cardiff and around South East Wales, but fell in love with the beautiful setting of Miskin Manor. Did you enjoy working with Miskin’s wedding co-ordinator? Lauren was absolutely fantastic. She couldn’t do enough to help us and we both agreed that she was influential in ensuring that everything went smoothly on the day. She is very calm and professional which is reassuring and was also very helpful with any planning headaches that arose and last-minute panics! Just before I walked into the ceremony room, I suddenly thought to myself ‘when do I walk in?’. I looked at Lauren and she must have seen a bit of panic in my face and she reassured me.
Did you stay at the Manor? We stayed at Miskin on the night of our wedding along with approximately 50 of our guests (including families with small children), mostly family and a few friends. We had a beautiful room with champagne waiting for us when we arrived and lots of people commented on how lovely their rooms were. How did the day go? The day was perfect! It really went without a hitch. We both put a lot of effort into the preparations in the run up, but on the day itself, we had to hand over the responsibility to Lauren and the team at Miskin to make sure that everything ran smoothly. We were really happy with the food and the service at the wedding breakfast. We had all of our photos outside and there were plenty of places for photos inside if it had rained. It’s funny actually, you seem to spend so much time thinking about the weather in the run up to the ‘big day’ but on the day itself I don’t think I even noticed what the weather was like. The transitions from ceremony to drinks reception, to wedding breakfast and finally to the evening reception were seamless.
to kick off the evening’s entertainment with the Pluck and Squeeze band, who were brilliant. We were a bit unsure about how this would be received but everyone got really involved and thoroughly enjoyed it. Where did you honeymoon? We went to Malaysia and had the time of our lives. The first couple of nights were spent at the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur before we moved on to Borneo. We saw orang-utans in the rainforest which was an amazing experience, and has always been a dream of ours! How’s married life? Absolutely amazing! We had been together for ten years before getting engaged, so we wondered whether married life would change anything. However, it definitely has made things a lot more special. We have been celebrating our anniversary every month so far and hope we can keep that up for years to come!
Would you recommend Lauren and Miskin Manor to friends? Most definitely, and we have already done so!
In addition to Lauren’s fantastic organisation, I have to say a special thank you to our amazing photographers Andy and Sacha Stoyle (ALS Photography) who recommended a number of our other suppliers (hairdressers, make up and florist) and who produced a beautiful album of our wedding day. Did you have entertainment? The String Quartet Company played during our ceremony and the drinks reception. We then had a disco in the evening (SG Disco’s). They also provided background music during the wedding breakfast. We also had a Twmpath for about an hour and a half ❧ 20 ❧

Matthew Mullooly of Northern Star in Penarth specialises in designing and creating bespoke jewellery using precious metals and gemstones. It’s the place to go if you’re looking for an individual and much admired engagement or wedding ring.
You’ll be involved in creating a unique piece of jewellery that you’ll love to wear. The use of a computer aided design programme (CAD) enables the wedding band to be precisely custom fitted to your engagement ring, and for you to see 3D images and make minor adjustments before it is finally cast.
DESIGNED FOR LIFE
I had been looking on the high street for an engagement ring for Claire for quite some time. I new that I wanted a pear shaped Diamond around 1ct in weight but wasn’t really confident enough to just make a decision. Matthew helped me to decide what options would be better for the design. He sourced a few diamonds within my budget and I then picked the one I preferred. My proposal was a complete surprise to Claire and she was delighted. I really hadn’t been brave enough to commit to any one particular ring before I had Matthew’s help. We are currently now having our wedding bands made by Matt.
I wanted my wedding band to consist of the diamonds from my grandmother’s eternity ring and of course wanted it to match with my engagement ring. Matthew Mullooly of Northern Star directed and advised on the style and shape and produced exactly the design that I had envisioned. The service was first class and Matthew was friendly, confident and couldn’t do enough to make the process of creating the perfect wedding band as easy as possible. Exactly what you want as a bride to be.
Matthew listened to my thoughts for the design of the ring I really wanted and then helped create exactly what I had in mind. Matthew was genuinely understanding, professional, and patient and provided a first-class service. I was over the moon with the final product which provided me with a new, unique and very sentimental engagement ring. I have received many admiring comments for the ring and it is really special being able to describe the story including the sentiments that go with it. Thank you once again Matthew for helping create my perfect dream ring.

Martin Phillips Martin Phillips Weddings make your special day theirs too! Just as important as finding ‘the’ dress is choosing the right photographer, to capture the magical moments that tell the story of your wedding day. After all, when the last champagne cork has been popped and the honeymoon is over, viewing your wedding photographs brings back the joy and emotion of your big event, forever! Martin’s wife Julie says, “There is something lovely about being asked to share in the intimate and emotional moments of a couple’s most memorable day. Everyone looks fabulous, people are happy and feeling the love. Even the good old British weather can’t dampen the excitement everyone shares on a wedding day. It’s all about the chemistry! If you feel relaxed together then getting great pictures on the day is going to be so much easier and more enjoyable. By building up a good relationship and learning more about you beforehand, we can be more creative and produce pictures that reflect your individual style and personalities. We have so much fun when we take our couples out for their pre-wedding shoot. We think it is so essential to spend a few hours together before the date of the actual wedding that we include a pre-shoot in all our wedding packages. Over the last ten years, Room For Living of Cowbridge has established itself at the forefront of high-end kitchen design across South Wales and beyond. How? By offering cutting-edge design, creative solutions and having an almost obsessive quest for creating the perfect kitchen for its many satisfied customers.
PERFECT TEN “Kitchens are great mirrors of technological and style development.”
❧ 28 ❧
“We have clearly weathered the recession as customers return to quality refurbishment projects rather than move,” exclaims Mike MacNabb, Room For Living’s owner. “Ours is a highly personalised service. Whether it’s simply fitting a kitchen or a complete redesign and fit.” So how is this compact and bijou kitchen company managing to buck the current trend? “Discerning buyers are there and they are seeking out good products at value for money at every level.” says Mike. “Fortunately, not many companies can operate at this level. Customers are far more demanding; and quite rightly so, they’re paying more. The quality of the product, of design, of everything is in a different league. Our kitchens are designed and built to last.”
With a small team of designers and installers, Mike runs a tight ship and takes great pride in the products the team offers and is especially excited about developments in their Schüller range. Mike continues, “There are several new sub-ranges coming on line with really clever design features that are exclusive to the manufacturer. We create traditional and contemporary here at Room For Living but I’d say orders are up for contemporary with clean uncomplicated lines at the moment – it’s just the ebb and flow of what’s in fashion.” Room For Living are also bringing in a new range of Italian inspired kitchens in late Spring. “They’re going to be stunning,” says Mike. “It’s going to open up a whole new way of designing kitchens for us. Curvy and creative; the ergonomics and design possibilities are really exciting our team of designers and some of our customers, who’ve already had a sneak preview, are already talking about placing orders. We’ll be introducing revised traditional kitchens in timber and paint effect to cater for the more conservative tastes but with a modern twist.” ❧ 29 ❧
I ask Mike if it’s that passion for design that keeps it interesting after ten years? “Absolutely, kitchens are great mirrors of technological and style development. The manufacturers are always looking to improve - especially at this level. They can’t stand still because their competitors aren’t. It’s what makes it interesting and, at Room For Living, we’re enjoying being at the forefront.”

Once upon a time, the boast for any fashionable home was a garden view through a wall of glass with an equally impressive set of patio doors. Not anymore. It’s time to...
OPEN WIDE Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of the patio door (or French doors). I like them a lot. In fact, I have a set myself. However, once you’ve seen a set of Visofold slide folding doors glide effortlessly open you’ll instantly want your own.
When opened, any barrier between you and the outside is gone - the two become one; it is quite breathtaking! I experienced this at a friend’s home recently and, even though it was pouring with rain, the panoramic effect was truly mesmerising - imagine what it would be like on a summer’s day!
This is no gimmick, no fad, but a beautiful piece of design innovation that makes you wonder why someone clever didn’t skip the whole patio-door thing in the first place. I could get into the technical stuff here but why? The benefits are clear - excuse the pun.
Visofold slide folding doors can be used in your living room, bedroom, kitchen or conservatory and they’re equally impressive when closed, creating a striking glass facade. Visofold Slide Folding Doors are available from Vellacine.

“Weight loss has always been a challenge for me. I have tried it all. You know what I'm talking about - diet, exercise and pills. It either doesn’t work or it doesn’t last. Even if I followed a diet carefully, it was so difficult, and eventually I failed, miserably. I knew that I needed help in controlling my appetite - but diet pills don't work so well.”
A LIGHTER LIFE Does this sound familiar? We all know the importance of diet and exercise to look good and feel good but, for some people, sticking to this healthy lifestyle is just too hard. Whether it’s a lack of willpower or motivation that’s the problem, it doesn’t make them bad people, it just means they need a little extra help. Over the last twenty five years the intragastric balloon has proved to be the most effective non-surgical method of treating obesity. More than 100,000 patients have achieved an average weight loss of more than 15kg during the first six months of treatment. Newport-based Nucleus Healthcare, Wales’ private centre of excellence for gastroenterology, has been fitting patients with intragastric balloons with great results and, from 2011, the hospital is delighted to announce that it will be offering a new adjustable gastric balloon, the Spatz. The adjustable gastric balloon is the next generation of balloon and is a non-surgical, non-drug therapy which does not involve a general anaesthetic. We spoke with Dr Manny Srivastava, founder of Nucleus Healthcare and Consultant Gastroenterologist to find out more about this new adjustable balloon.
What makes this gastric balloon different to the old one? Despite achieving great results over the years, certain weaknesses and limitations in the traditional intragastric balloon have been detected – nothing that those with the old-style balloon should be concerned about but as with most things, there’s always room for improvement. The main reason was that it was impossible to modify the volume throughout the treatment and the useful life of the device was limited to six months. After years of exhaustive research, the Spatz adjustable gastric balloon has been designed to overcome this issue and offers a more effective treatment for twelve months. How does it work? The adjustable gastric balloon is filled with saline and sits in the stomach for twelve months resulting in an average weight loss of four to five stones at twelve months. It drastically reduces the sensation of appetite due to the volume it occupies in the stomach. It slows stomach emptying, keeping blood sugar levels stable, thereby reducing the sensation of hunger. It eliminates the vicious cycle of ‘hunger, anxiety, hunger’ and provides control from the very beginning.
What does the procedure involve? A deflated balloon is inserted into the stomach through an endoscope. The balloon is then filled with saline to produce a feeling of fullness. The ability to vary the volume in the balloon over twelve months allows greater weight loss. It also reduces side effects as you can tailor the volume in the balloon to suit the patient. The balloon is inserted under local anaesthetic and takes about twenty minutes. The patient stays in the hospital for around two hours.
“It eliminates the vicious cycle of ‘hunger, anxiety, hunger’ and provides control from the very beginning.”
❧ 32 ❧
“Over the last twenty five years the intragastric balloon has proved to be the most effective non-surgical method of treating obesity... Patients have regular follow-up appointments with a dietician and specialist nurse to learn about healthy nutrition and exercise.”
What about aftercare? Patients have regular follow-up appointments with a dietician and specialist nurse to learn about healthy nutrition and exercise. After twelve months, the balloon is removed. Nucleus staff continue to provide aftercare beyond twelve months with individual counselling and group seminars for as long as the patient feels they are necessary.
What are the benefits? Obesity is a huge social and medical problem in Wales with enormous implications for the people involved. This style of treatment has a proven track record and, I believe, has a much greater success rate. It is very much an aid to dieting and helps modify their eating habits. Once the balloon is in place, people don't feel as hungry, and eat smaller portions.
Who is the balloon suitable for? It is suitable for patients over eighteen with a body mass index of 27 or more. There are two main groups of patients who opt for a gastric balloon - those worried about long-term health problems associated with being overweight or obese and those that want to lose weight for cosmetic reasons. Can you tell us about any new developments at Nucleus? This is a really exciting time for us and we are delighted to announce that we have just opened a brand new, state-ofthe-art laparoscopic unit and that we now carry out gastric banding.

With a stunning new range of roller blinds, plantation shutters and awnings, the sun is certainly shining for Solar Sunshades. Valleys Life takes a quick tour with Solar’s busy Managing Director, Huw Davies.
Solar has been around for over thirty years or more, so there’s not a lot it hasn’t seen or been resilient and robust enough to survive, and that matters. Why? Well, if you buy off a company that’s gone in six months’ time and your blinds fail, you’ll be left holding a rather useless cord. Huw says, “As Wales’ No.1 Blind company we aim to offer a quality product at a fair price. Solar will never be the cheapest blinds in the market, but we take quality, customer service and safety very seriously. It’s why customers return again and again.” Tragically, in the UK, there have been five child fatalities due to strangulation in blind cords and Solar are very active in the ‘make it safe’ campaign.
ROLL UP ROLL UP Huw says, “Child safety is of paramount importance to Solar and all our products are fitted with a child safety device.” Solar has a factory and showroom at Bridgend, a showroom in Barry as well as concessions at Leekes stores in Llantrisant, Cross Hands and Melksham plus a further concession at George Street Furnishers in Newport. If you own a conservatory then you may also be in the market for some Solar service, with their Perfect Fit system; a fantastic product where no drilling or screwing is required to fix the blinds to windows. Plantation shutters and motorised blinds are also becoming very popular with customers wanting a dramatic change of style and ease of use.
On March 1st Solar launched its new ‘Inspirations’ range, which contains their best collection of fabrics ever, with brand new designs, textures and a colour palette that’s bang on trend. This collection means you can gain the look at an affordable price.

THE LAST WORD Andrew McGee spends his leisure time cycling and playing golf. When he’s not, you’ll find him at the family business, R McGee Insurance Brokers on Maesteg’s Commercial Street. How long has your business been in Maesteg? My father, Robert McGee, started the business here in Maesteg over forty years ago. We’ve been in this location for twenty-six years. How’s business? Business is good. We have a lot of customers who just prefer dealing with these matters face to face. I think people are shopping around more so we’re finding customers who used to buy online returning to local brokers, and the truth is we can be competitive and we can give the customer the right advice they need. There’s no better service than face to face. Where do customers come from? Bridgend, Port Talbot and Maesteg mainly but at least 40% of our customers are from outside the area including the Valleys and the Vale of Glamorgan. Do you live locally? Maesteg, born and bred. I live in Cwrt Coed Parc in Maesteg. What do you do when you’re not working? I play golf at Maesteg Golf Club and I love cycling - at least twice a week. They’re both good ways to get away from the business and clear the head. I’m also a season ticket holder at Cardiff City Football Club. I support the Welsh football team too and get along to matches when I can. Where’s your favourite place to eat? Nowhere in particular. I like Italian and curry too. There are some good pubs around the area for Sunday lunch but I’m pretty easy-going.
Favourite place in the Valleys? Afan Argoed is fantastic. The scenery we have around us is stunning. I think we take it for granted. I love cycling around Afan Argoed and also The Darren here in Maesteg. Porthcawl is lovely too. My wife and I enjoy long walks there along the coastal path. We also like Skaer beach - it’s very special. What types of insurance products do you offer? Home insurance, motor insurance, travel insurance – we’re competitive on those certainly. We also have a healthy commercial client base. We can provide public liability insurance, fleet policies, shops and commercial combined. We’re doing more with landlords these days too – because properties can be empty for a while, landlords need to know they have the right cover. I think we’re successful in this sector because of the quality of advice and we can genuinely save customers money; we have forty years’ experience after all. What benefits do you offer? When you buy an insurance policy you only see a piece of paper. It’s only when you claim you realise what you’ve actually bought. That’s the problem with online. It’s not really tailored to your needs. If you buy off the web, you have to deal with the claim – buy through us and we deal with the insurer on your behalf. We’re also a member of Countrywide Network, which means we have access to preferential rates with certain insurers. This makes us extremely competitive, and our hands-on approach means a lot less stress for customers choosing a policy and especially if they have to claim.
“With home insurance, motor insurance and travel insurance, if you buy off the web you have to deal with the claim. Buy through us and we deal with the insurer on your behalf - a lot less stress.” ❧ 42 ❧
Local postman Colin Schofield is a long time customer and says he uses Andrew and his team at R McGee because it’s convenient and he prefers face to face rather than over the phone.
Are you active in the community? Yes, we sponsor a local school rugby team and a Sunday League football team. We do what we can. I think if you’re in business, you have a duty to support the community and, as a local business, it’s good if the community supports us. What are your hopes for the future? We have investment from large retailers coming into the area but the character, the charm that Maesteg has, comes from the independent retailers - so I’d like to see more support from the people of the area towards those. We have a beautiful town - it has a lot going for it; lots of free parking and there’s still that sense of community here.
