Penarth’s first fashion week took place in October to raise money for the RNLI. What was originally planned twelve months earlier as a single event evolved into something much bigger with the passion from the RNLI fundraising team, local businesses, the crew and more importantly, the community.

PENARTH FASHION WEEK After months of planning, Penarth was treated to a mixture of events which encapsulated fashion, beauty, food and most importantly prosecco and gin!

The events sponsored Beverly Davies Penny and Valco Scaffolding took place in church halls, shops, bars, cafés and Penarth Lifeboat station itself. Gingers kicked off Fashion Week in tremendous style with a fashion show at St Augustine’s church hall, followed by an event at The Queen B Boutique, with an after party at Etc. Brush with Beauty had Delilah make up demonstrations and this was followed by an evening at Ener-chi with ESPA (very relaxing!). There was an open evening at Refresh Clinic, gin tasting at Crepe Escape and an event at Blu Hair Design with Dawn Clinic showing the latest in hair and aesthetics, followed by an after party at Willmore’s. We then saw the opening of Nathan Palmer’s showroom, a lovely addition to Penarth. The weekend was soon upon us and it was time to transform the RNLI station – in 48 hours it had to be an operational station, catwalk and restaurant – nothing like a challenge!

Thank you to Jason Hall of C3i who provided all of the staging, lighting and sound for the fashion show and dinner at the station along with his tremendous team managed by Jen Payne (crew member). The final dressing of the station was down to Events @ Room 11.

An extremely busy week that brought the Penarth community together raising money to help keep our local RNLI heroes kitted out with the best clothing, training and equipment – this week of fashion, fun and friendship raised over £11,000 which will go a long way to help save lives at sea.

Saturday saw The Queen B Boutique and Nathan Palmer put on a spectacular fashion show, compered by Wenda James-Rowe where the RNLI designed dress and jacket were on show, along with the latest trends for the winter months. This was followed by an after party at Penarth Yacht Club where more fun was had! With sore heads on the Sunday the station was reformed to a fine dining restaurant, ready for the three-course meal prepared by James Sommerin Penarth’s Michelin Star chef. Along the way, Vale Life and City Life Cardiff, our chosen sole media sponsors, had showcased the events beautifully and their videographer Ben and photographer Jamie worked their socks off to capture every moment on film. 8

We are now working on ideas for 2018. If anyone would like to get in touch, please contact Caroline Eva. 07899 717386 caroline.eva@hotmail.co.uk @CarolineEva10

It’s often said that as summer comes to an end, Gower gets quiet. For local business owners though, the work doesn’t stop.

LLANRHIDIAN HOLIDAY PARK

This is certainly the case for Andrew and Gaynor Richards - owners of Llanrhidian Holiday Park for 25 years. Initial work is in process to introduce a dog grooming parlour, a larger hair, nails and beauty salon and a small gym. Plus, an imminent delivery of an array of brand new, luxury caravans... Andrew Richards - still feels the excitement every year when the new caravan models arrive: “There’s a real buzz about the place when the first couple of caravans get to Llanrhidian. After all these years I still can’t wait for them to get here, and all the staff are the same! We take real pride in the quality of the vans and genuinely love showing them off to prospective new holiday home owners.” By the looks of things, staff at Llanrhidian Holiday Park have good reason to show off their 2018 fleet.

Gone are the days when a caravan holiday meant cramming into a singular space resulting in a lack of privacy and a cramped, less-than-relaxing environment. Instead, 21st century holiday homes are a thing of beauty, with many affording all the luxuries of a flat or apartment. “My favourite is the ABI Beaumont,” says Mitzi Richards, daughter of Andrew and Gaynor. “I love the colour scheme. It’s also big and spacey, it feels like a proper home. I would have no problems having my German shepherd in there you couldn’t do that in the old-school vans!” Speaking of homliness - all the latest models are fitted with double-glazing and come with central heating as standard, meaning that you can cocoon yourself in the cosiness of your caravan when the weather is less than desirable outside: perfect for all-year-round escapes to Llanrhidian. 16

“We only close the site for three weeks in January, meaning that you’re able to get value for money and a holiday whenever you want. Holiday home owners seem to be spending more time than ever before at the park in autumn and winter including Christmas and New Year, so we’ve adapted our approach and the services we offer accordingly.” One such service is The Purple Badger - a quirky bar and restaurant set on Llanrhidian Holiday Park itself. The Purple Badger is open throughout the season offering not only outstanding food and drink, but also a whole host of events: Christmas tribute nights every weekend in December (including a cracking Neil Diamond!)

“21st century holiday homes are a thing of beauty.”

Cowbridge is renowned for its quality eating establishments. For those seeking home-cooked food, expertly served, in a building bursting with rustic charm, twinkly lights and a roaring fire, one name is often on everyone’s taste buds…

THE PENNY FARTHING

Walk through the double doors and you’re greeted with a dessert cabinet that never ceases to elicit rapturous oohs and aahs. We caught up with dessert chef Abi Condon to find out more. How long have you worked at The Penny Farthing? Three years. I started front of house as a waitress/barista. I enjoyed the creative element of making drinks with various motifs but I really wanted to become the house pastry chef. I worked alongside the previous pastry chef Alex, who had eight years’ experience and spent time learning and refining my skills with a previous employee who had been there twenty-five years.

“There’s a history of baking in the family.”

Where did your love of baking come from? There’s a history of baking in the family - my mum made cakes for special occasions such as weddings and anniversaries, and it was helping her that ignited my passion. I still use my grandmother’s recipe for Victoria sponge which was award-winning. I always felt I had the makings of a talented pastry chef, so I relished the opportunity to develop my skills. My aunt had a business based at home that catered for parties and my grandmother entered her creations into local competitions. Describe your day at The Penny Farthing… My day starts at 5.30am, which is just as well as I am a morning person! I come in at this hour to ensure I have sole use of the kitchen and to make 18

sure that all the desserts are freshly prepared and ready for when the doors open at 8.30am. Due to their popularity, preparing meringues for the pavlovas is usually my first job. We offer three different varieties - the demand for them is high. I make sure the cake counter is fully stocked and presented well. I then set about the preparation for our sponges, quiches and Glamorgan sausages. We also get afternoon tea bookings, which I need to factor into my day’s preparation, as well as making sure any off-site sales are catered for. What are the most popular desserts? Salted caramel cheese cake and raspberry and hazelnut pavlova are by far our most popular. Salted caramel is a very en-vogue flavour now and the pavlova has traditionally been our top seller, probably due to its very generous proportions!

The Afternoon Teas are very popular, what is included? Afternoon tea includes a selection of home-made desserts such as our very popular carrot cake, almond slice, scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, macaroons and vegan chocolate brownie cake. All accompanied by hand-cut bloomer sandwich selection, tea or coffee with prosecco as an optional extra - all for a very reasonable £12.95. What makes the Penny Farthing Afternoon Tea stand out from the crowd? I think the fact that we use the highest quality ingredients and, whenever possible, they are locally sourced. They are home-made and freshly prepared on a daily basis, with no need to book, available Monday to Friday from 2.30pm, and Saturday from 3pm.

We always try to cater for customers with special dietary requirements, such as the gluten free desserts and the vegan chocolate brownie cake. We have an extensive range of desserts on offer so there is always something to satisfy the most discerning of tastes. Our 100% Fairtrade and organic certified coffee is also a firm favourite. Are you working on any new recipes for the winter? I am currently developing a new recipe for mulled cherry pie for the festive season and a new twist on an orange and apple fragipan. I am also toying with a mince pie with a meringue topping.

“Salted caramel cheese cake and raspberry and hazelnut pavlova are by far our most popular.” 19

Cowbridge welcomed a brand new pub in September. 1 Town Hall Square underwent an amazing transformation into a real ale and craft beer free house - it’s going down well.

1 TOWN H ALL SQUARE Vale Life popped over for a chat to find out a little more about what’s been happening over at Cowbridge’s trendiest free house. How’s life at the newest pub in Cowbridge? Things have been busy and really wonderful. We change beers after almost every barrel, so life’s like a constant beer festival. We’ve already served over eighty different draught beers from forty-one different brewers since opening; from local brews to Welsh favourites. What’s on the menu? No food, just a sprinkling of bar snacks to compliment our main focus of serving great beer. We have sixteen draught beer lines, not to mention a great range of ciders, whisky, spirits, wine and bubbles. Who needs food when you have a good drink in your hand? That said, we’ve got menus from loads of our great local eateries here in Cowbridge and encourage people to support them by ordering takeaways to be delivered here.

We’re also planning a regular Street Food Pop-Up outside in our courtyard.

A lunchtime pint is sometimes essential; can we pop over to you for one? Absolutely, we’re open all day from 11:30am. Our goal is to blend the charm of a traditional British pub with the contemporary style of the recent craft beer boom. So, like a good old fashioned boozer, we’re open seven days a week, all day, just like our sister pub in Bridgend. Please tell us about your sister pub… Her name is The Coach and she’s in Bridgend. We’re the same in terms of making good beer the foundation for good times.

Wow! That’s great. So what are your plans over the next few months? Well, we’ve already had our first Tap Takeover & Meet The Brewer, we’ll be announcing the next one very soon as well as our Street Food plans for the 6 Nations. We’ve also launched loyalty cards for our ‘Cask Clwb’ in collaboration with The Coach. Once you’ve filled up your card with nine stamps, your tenth cask ale is on us (at either pub). We’ve got a few Christmas surprises up our sleeves too, including another ‘Duck Hunt’ when, should you find one of our ducks in Cowbridge, you can return it for a free beer! A very Merry Christmas to all readers, we hope to see you soon.

The Coach has been built around a wonderful reputation for great real ale and craft beer since 2010, so we’re really lucky to have them as a big sister - with their experience and advice on hand whenever we need it. Mind you, we’ve a long way to go to reach their beer tally though, they’ve gone past the 2,500 mark! 1 Town Hall Square Cowbridge CF71 7DD www.1townhallsquare.com hello@1townhallsquare.com Like and follow on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram @1TownHallSquare 21

Just a short drive from Swansea, the Gower Peninsula is more than just a pretty face. It was designated as the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in 1956 and, we’re glad to say, it hasn’t changed much since!

INTRODUCING GOWER THE UK’S FIRST AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY

Visit the Gower Peninsula for a rich and varied environment which is breath-taking! From wild moors and limestone cliffs to golden, sandy beaches. Gower is a geological goldmine with inspiring landscapes – just look at Dylan Thomas’ work. And the Beach Goes On Stay on dry land, and you will be missing out! It gets some of the most awesome waves in Britain, and sandy Llangennith has been popular amongst surfers for decades. Rhossili Bay has also been enjoying some limelight on the world stage too. It has been voted Wales’ Best Beach 2017 and one of the UK’s Top 10 Beaches for five years running in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards AND was the first beach to be awarded Britain’s Best Beach for two years in succession!

True adrenaline junkies can try a spot of coasteering - climb the cliffs and leap into the waves below, not for the faint hearted! Make sure you’re always accompanied by a professional though. Coast & Countryside The 19 mile-long Peninsula starts at Mumbles and extends westwards. It’s famous for its beautiful coastline and beaches (from vast Rhossili Bay to tiny, secluded Pwll Du), and is a favourite destination for walkers and surfers. Inland you’ll find sheltered woodland and rolling grasslands; country pubs and fine food. It’s no surprise that walking in Gower is so popular, its home to some of the most beautiful sections of the Wales Coast Path. Grab your boots and be prepared for a spectacular waterfront walk. 22

It’s not all about sea and sand either you’ll encounter lush woodlands and stunning countryside views along the way. Sample some of the local delicacies, such as Penclawdd Cockles from the Loughor estuary, succulent Salt Marsh Lamb and the famous Laverbread (its seaweed!). Outstanding Natural Beauty Gower was awarded its AONB status for its classic coastline (much of it is Heritage Coast) and its outstanding natural environment (33% is National Nature Reserve or a Site of Special Scientific Interest). The Peninsula’s richly varied natural environment is renowned for its heathland, limestone grassland, freshand salt-water marshes, dunes and oak woodlands.

Its mixed geology has given rise to a wide variety of scenery in a relatively small landscape area. Dramatic limestone cliffs, interspersed with sandy beaches and rocky shores, dominate its southern coast. In the north, the coast is low-lying with extensive salt marshes and dune systems. Travel Back in Time There are at least 1200 archaeological sites in the AONB of different periods and types. These include caves, Iron Age forts, medieval castles, churches, a lighthouse and 19th Century parks. 73 of these are of national importance, with 124 listed buildings. Gower is a true place of legends – don’t miss Arthur’s Stone, a neolithic burial chamber located at the top of Cefn Bryn.

The western part of the AONB is included in the Register of Landscapes of Outstanding Historic Interest in Wales, for the rich evidence of a long sequence of land use and occupation from the prehistoric to industrial periods. This includes Iron Age forts and a surviving medieval open field system (known as the Vile, near Rhossili). Rest Up & Recharge If this article has whet your appetite, there is a wide range of accommodation in Gower; hotels, guest-houses, self-catering apartments, caravans and campsites. From the sumptuous to the simplistic, there is something to suit all tastes and budgets. To check out where to stay and what to see and do on Gower go to www.visitswanseabay.com 23

A few of the manufacturing processes at the Valley Mill factory

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

VALLEY

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

Their journey began with director and creator Kevin Thomas in 2007, after purchasing a laser engraving machine and utilising two bedrooms at home as a workshop. The one-man band started attending markets and shows on the weekend; selling handmade laser engraved Welsh slate products, whilst still working as a full time manufacturing engineer. After committing to the business full time in 2009 the next step was to build two sheds in his garden to house the business.

In 2012, due to a surge in business brought on by supplying retail stores throughout the UK, Valley Mill moved into a commercial property in Crynant. This gave them the room and opportunity to expand their manufacturing processes, resulting in the creation of their range of Soy wax candles & handmade natural soaps.

Due to the success of supplying other stores, the natural progression was for them to open their own high street store in Neath. Two years later the momentum continued, and with the help of local investment funding, were able to purchase better machinery and take over the unit next door in Crynant. This has expanded their workshop to an impressive 300 square metres in total, which houses 3 high powered laser engraving machines, a 7Kw sandblast engraver and a 2 meter bridge cutter. In 2016 they made the brave decision to move their high street store from Neath, to a much larger store in the heart of Swansea. Valley Mill now hand make a wide range of Welsh slate products; from coasters and placemats, to clocks and memo boards - all of which can be personalised in-store whilst you wait. With the help of one of their friendly sales assistants, you can also design your own house signs, memorials, trophies and awards; all of which are handcrafted to order in the Crynant workshop.

MILL

As well as their Swansea store and online, you can find Valley Mill’s products in over 140 stores throughout the UK.

Alongside their large range of Welsh slate home and giftware, you can find a variety of products from other likeminded Welsh companies; such as Melin Tregwynt, Tweedmill, Welsh Lavender and many more. All of these products, which are also handmade in Wales, include Welsh woollen blankets, scarves & cushions, handmade ceramics, natural beauty products, jewellery and much more. All products are hand picked to compliment Valley Mill’s own ranges. Valley Mill is proud to support other independent Welsh businesses, and stock some of the best products that Wales has to offer. Having supplied products to some of the most demanding and influential people in the world, such as Barack Obama, David Cameron and even the Queen, Valley Mill has the confidence and drive to keep putting Wales on the map.

“I believe in these uncertain times it is important to support Welsh companies, which is why the whole ethos of Valley Mill is to only sell products that are actually made in Wales.” Check out everything Valley Mill have to offer by visiting the website or for a more immersive experience pop to the store…

2017 has seen a massive surge in the popularity of craft beers and ales. The demand has grown so large that there is plenty to choose from. At Vale Life we like to keep things local and support Welsh businesses, this is something we share with the owner of This Is Beer, Richard Morris.

THIS IS BEER

Richard, please tell us a little about the business? We started wholesaling Welsh bottled beer back in 2015 and the business has really grown from there. We launched our online shop a year ago and, in June this year, we opened This is Beer in Porthcawl. The shop is the newest addition. Our aim was really to create something a bit different and offer something people won’t find in the supermarkets - what we’ve ended up with is a bottle shop and mini bar with a few taps, selling real ales and craft beers from all over Wales and around the world, as well as a selection of ciders, spirits and unique wines. People can buy straight off the shelf and enjoy in-house or stock up. Through our wholesale business Tayst sell craft beers, real ales, ciders and spirits from a range of breweries across Wales, England, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

We’ve also just opened a small shop in our warehouse in Bridgend, where you can purchase our entire range. What’s the feedback been like since you’ve opened? We’ve had a great response from locals and tourists alike. Welsh beer is gaining more recognition and we’ve certainly seen lots of interest in craft beers and real ales, and the other products we stock like ciders, spirits, and wine. We’re not purely a bar, so we’re not open late (8pm on weeknights and 5pm on Sundays) and I think that helps to create a nice atmosphere for shoppers, and those popping in for a quick drink. Closer to Christmas we’ll be opening a bit later though.

“Even if you’re not normally a beer drinker there’s bound to be something for you.” 26

Why do you think craft beer and real ales are so popular right now? I think, essentially, beer has become interesting again. When you look back at the binge drinking culture of the nineties and noughties where people drank to get drunk, there wasn’t a huge variety on offer. We’ve really started to move on. It’s not just about drinking to get drunk anymore, it’s about allowing people to have conversations about good quality beer. We know that not everybody likes beer, but what we’d encourage everyone to do is to step out of their comfort zone just for a bit and try something new. There are now so many different styles and varieties to try, that even if you’re not normallly a beer drinker there’s bound to be something for you. That’s why we’ve started to run tasting evenings and a beer club.

You’ve given us your top picks in the shop right now, but what do you look for in a beer? I’m a bit of a craft beer cliché because I really love the fruity, hoppy beers but at the moment I’m enjoying sour beers as well. Really, I just enjoy finding beers that are a bit different! You’re obviously very passionate about what you do, what’s the inspiration behind this? Getting into beer just sort of happened really - I started off selling sauces in the Welsh food markets and became friendly with lots of independent brewers. I began wholesaling Welsh food and a few beers and gradually noticed the beer was selling well so that ended up being my focus, things have just grown from there. I also did my fair share of drinking while playing in bands when I was younger so the opportunity to sell beer for a living seemed like a bit of a dream for me!

You also have an online shop and distribute beer all-over tell us more... We launched the online shop last year and sell direct to customers across the UK, mainland Europe, and North America. There is a huge appetite for craft beer and real ale, which some people don’t have access to, so it’s great to be able to help people access smaller independent breweries. There also seems to be a big Welsh ex-pat population out there! We also sell to trade customers all across south and west Wales and the west of England, through the wholesale business Tayst. We’re always looking to get more people into the beer scene so you can contact us directly for wholesale enquiries.

TaylorMade by Stanton specialises in individually designed bespoke interiors - from kitchens and utilities to libraries, studies & bedrooms, including all interior joinery. From design to fitting they provide a truly tailor made service. Wye Life chats with business partners Tom Taylor and Jeremy Stanton.

TAYLORMADE BY We love your gorgeous showroom; do you need to make an appointment? Thank you. Our showroom is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm with only Saturdays requiring an appointment. What led to you setting up TaylorMade by Stanton? I (Tom Taylor) purchased Woodlands Estate in 1998 and the premises were leased to a third party. In January 2000 the tenants ceased trading so I invited my son-in-law Jeremy Stanton to have a look around the premises with the idea of starting a family bespoke furniture company as there had been joinery businesses on this site for decades. For the previous twelve years Jeremy had been working with a colleague in the Stroud area designing and manufacturing high quality bespoke joinery for clients mainly in the London area.

By May 2000 a family partnership, to be known as TaylorMade by Stanton was formed with myself and Sandy Taylor & Jeremy and Lorraine Stanton.

Do you make your kitchens on site? All of our cabinetry is built from scratch in our workshops by skilled craftsmen. As we design and build to suit any given space or shape with non-standard carcases, it is essential for it to be built in the workshop and laid out as it would be in a client’s room. This gives a client an opportunity to pop in at any stage of the build and view its progress. What sets you apart from other Kitchen companies? We are not mass producers and are personally responsible for each project from start to finish. We are great believers in quality before quantity. We are totally committed to every project; this ensures that our clients receive continuous quality advice. 28

This commitment covers all the trades that are necessary to ensure the end result will stand the test of time.

What advice can you give to our readers who may be considering changing/updating their kitchen? Take your time, don’t be rushed into making bad decisions and if you have just purchased a property try and live in it for a few months, at least until you have a feel for what you might want in your new home. Do you have any plans for the future? To continue to build on our reputation for quality and service and to be the “go to” company for interior bespoke cabinetry and joinery solutions in the area. And to continue to produce high quality furniture and probably take on a further apprentice to be trained in the skills necessary to produce the high quality products that we are renowned for.

STANTON TaylorMade by Stanton also supply the finest and most sought after appliances and worktops available; they have the largest selection of Sub-Zero and Wolf products built into their showroom kitchens anywhere in the region. Also on display are the La Cornue hand built ranges along with Mercury, Falcon and Aga Total Control. Plus they have many worktop options on show including Dupont Corian, Cosentino Silestone, Dekton and Granite. If you’re looking for attention to detail, and service second to none, we highly recommend a visit - and if you want to see the showroom on a Saturday do remember to book an appointment: 01452 831 538.

Technology is changing fast in the medical world, especially in the MRI scanning sector.

EUROPEAN

The European Scanning Centre looks more like a boutique hotel than a medical centre. We met with manager Melanie to find out more.

He has a large clinical practice which has given him considerable insight into the needs of referring clinicians ensuring the ESC delivers a first class imaging service.

Please tell us about the facility... The facility in Cardiff comprises of a new Open and Upright MRI Scanner, the only one of its type in Wales. n The scanner is completely open above and to the front and rear, thereby avoiding claustrophobia. n Patients can be scanned in their position of pain whether it is sitting, standing, bending or lying down. n Extra wide space ensures larger patients feel comfortable and relaxed during the scan.

Please tell us about the ESC team... Melanie is Centre Manager along with two Radiographers (Carol-Ann and Ria). The Reception staff are Lisa and Nicola.

How long has the European Scanning Centre been in operation? Since 2003. The ESC has developed a reputation for providing a high quality and professional imaging service. Dr Paul Jenkins MA MD FRCP is the Medical Director of European Scanning Centre and also a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist. He graduated from Cambridge University and The Royal London Hospital before undertaking specialist training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

The Radiographers have many years experience of working in MRI scanners across South Wales - both in the NHS and private sector. Melanie previously worked in the Open MRI scanner, which was in the same premises as European Scanning Centre, for over fifteen years. Tell us about the ambience and interior décor of the centre... The Centre has been carefully designed with patient comfort at the forefront with a warm and welcoming reception area and staff who have been specially chosen for their ability to put patients at ease. We have invested in a five star environment where the emphasis is on patient comfort & relaxation. Whilst being scanned, patients are able to watch television, listen to the radio or are welcome to bring in their music of choice. 30

Two way audio facilities allow our radiographers to communicate and reassure patients during their scan and the viewing window ensures that both the patient and the radiographer are always in the line of vision.

How does the scanner work? The scanner is a large super conducting magnet - it is the only superconductive MRI scanner that enables fully open and upright imaging of the spine and joints, allowing patients to be scanned in a non claustrophobic and full weight bearing position. Imaging in the sitting or standing position can provide a more accurate diagnosis thus improving overall patient outcome. It is a more patient friendly scanner than the usual tunnel scanners - so more suited to patients who are anxious, claustrophobic or are unable to lie down. How much does the scanner cost? The refurbishment of the centre and new scanner has cost almost £2m. It’s a considerable investment but worth every penny as the benefits to patients’ wellbeing are well worth it.

SCANNING CENTRE Why do patients choose the scanner? The scanner is U shaped so is open above the patient unlike closed MRI scanners thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.

How long does the scan take? Each part we scan takes approx thirty minutes but we allow more time for the appointment so that patients can get comfortable in the scan room.

Do I need a doctor’s referral? Ideally it is better to be referred for a scan by your GP, a consultant, physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath. However we do accept self referrals for certain scans.

Where do your patients come from? The majority of our patients come from all over Wales and the West Country as there are very few of these scanners in operation. But we have also scanned patients from overseas including Ireland and the Middle East.

How quickly are results generated? We aim to get the results back to the referrer within forty-eight hours. How many patients can you see? It depends on the part of the body and how many areas we need to examine. We tailor appointments to suit the needs of the patient as some patients have specific mobility issues or other needs that need extra time. We don’t want to rush our patients as many need more time for the examination than the standard closed MRI scanner due to claustrophobia or mobility issues.

How do your fees compare? The ESC is recognised by all the major insurers. We aim to be as competitive as possible in our pricing and do not seek to charge a premium for the specialist services we offer. The self pay cost depends on the number of areas being scanned - however our prices are competitive to other open MRI scanners. We don’t profess to be a provider of “conveyor belt scanning” as we tailor our service to provide the extra time and support for patients to be able complete their scan.

“The scanner is U shaped so is open above... thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.” 31

Wye Life meets talented furniture designer and craftsman, Matthew Smith.

DRAGONFLY WOODWORK How did you become a master carpenter? Please tell us about your training. I grew up in the heart of south Wales. My dad was active in teaching me how to build and create from a young age. At ten years old I made a picket fence for my grandparents’ garden. Then, through making many go-carts and an eccentric bird house, I discovered a love for working with wood. In 1997 I completed a four-year apprenticeship in traditional carpentry and joinery (which also included all aspects of the building trade). A few years later, after working for the firm in which I learnt my trade, I moved to the island of Jersey. There I worked for an established company before setting up a business on my own. I worked on and oversaw many projects, covering pretty much all aspects in and around houses, farms,

barns and commercial buildings. I was fortunate to work for many customers who appreciated fine detail and highly skilled, traditional craftsmanship. After fiften years of living and working in Jersey, my heart brought me back to south Wales, where I have set up a workshop in the Brecon Beacons. I am now working on furniture, by commission, where I like to use an array of timbers, from the perfectly straight to the most unusual. I have the ability and machinery to fell and plank trees, so furniture can be made using wood from a clients’ estate. The uniqueness of each piece I make sometimes involves combining wood with other material like steel or glass. When did you establish Dragonfly Woodwork? Two years ago. 32

What was your first commission? A sweet chestnut dining room table and two long benches. What type of wood do you prefer to work with and why? I like working with hard woods, rather than soft woods. Hard woods are more durable and long lasting. Which allows me to create pieces that will last for generations. What type of work do you take on? Mainly commissions on interior and exterior furniture. What has been your favourite commission to date? There has been no particular favourite as I thoroughly enjoy everything I do, finding pleasure and love in the uniqueness of each creation.

How far would you travel for a commission? I am fortunate to have my own workshop to work on the commissions, which means nowhere is too far to reach. If someone sees and wants the integrity and craftsmanship of what I can offer, it’s a pleasure to travel to meet them. I am currently working on two projects a fair distance away, with one client being in Holland and the other in the south of France.

You live in a beautiful part of Wales. How does the landscape inspire you? The whole of life inspires me. Wood taught me from a very young age that it needs to be heard; it has a voice in its own silence, guiding the direction of each new creation. Which makes it an honour to work with.

It’s been another incredible year for Alexander James of Swansea. As the company’s reputation has been growing, primarily, from its many happy customers. Mr and Mrs Lewis of Cowbridge are one of these and are now fully ensconced in their stunning new home. “Our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape.” “Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation.”

One of the real pleasures of publishing is meeting new people. A chance encounter in the Vale introduced us to Rob Higgins who owns a modest smallholding in Peterston, and is a Director of a brand new(ish) gin distillery hidden in the depths of the valleys. We had to visit, we just had to.

ECCENTRIC CRAFT GINS ECCENTRIC CRAFT GINS

The fabulous four… Eccentric Gin currently produces four quite distinct gins (we have to admit, after tasting them, we’re fans). Here’s how Eccentric describes its range… MADAM GENEVA London dry: 42% abv. A London dry as it should be. Simple, dry and juniper forward with citrus and a hint of liquorice and some subtle floral and sweet characters added by the sacred duo ‘meadowsweet and wild sunflower’. LIMBECK A new Western style gin: 45% abv. A gorgeously heady mix of blue ginger and citrus with tarragon, Seville orange and Orris. Rested in recycled burgundy French oak casks to develop a smooth texture. The oak casks leave a subtle peach colour, which will vary subtly with each batch (that’s craft!). Hidden in a secret location, Eccentric Gin, is a craft gin distillery producing a superb range of very unique and innovative gins. Now most new gin distilleries would give themselves a pat on the back for launching one good gin in their first year. Eccentric produced four. And not only that, these particular four gins have been going down a storm with connoisseurs and gin lovers right across the UK. Using a combination of traditional methods fused with established innovative botanicals (even barrel ageing some gins - very clever stuff), the result is a range of smooth gins with flavours that appeal to all ages and palates. Eccentric originally operated in Llantrisant in 2015 but recently moved to larger premises. Eccentric’s innovative gins are distilled by a mix of brewers, mixologists and even a freeman of Llantrisant. Indeed it was William Price, a true eccentric, with radical, innovative ideas that served as the inspiration for the Eccentric brand.

Described as one of the most unique men in Victorian Britain, William Price (1800 - 1893) was a physician and freeman of Llantrisant. “He was quite the eccentric!” says Rob, “He was a believer in free love, democracy, and the emancipation of women, druidism and legalised cremation. He really sums up the Eccentric ethos!”

YOUNG TOM Fresh juniper malt gin: 46% abv. Fermented from ipa wash and refined to a clean aromatic distillate. Naturally sweetened and vapour infused then rested. A sweet and floral style of gin with fennel, wild sunflower root and star anise seeds. Rested for 6 weeks to develop its flavours…

London Dry Gin, Dublin Dry Gin, Edinburgh Dry Gin, and even Plymouth have had a Gin named after them for many years. Eccentric Gin produce an innovative craft gin called Cardiff Dry finally putting Cardiff the capital of Wales on the gin map at long last.

CARDIFF DRY A unique dry gin: 37.5%abv. A new style of gin chosen by the people of south wales. Rich herbal notes of rosemary, fennel, sorrel and liquorice, together with citrus notes from the lemongrass and verbena. Perhaps the new aperitif gin of the world?

I ask Rob what are Eccentric’s plans for the future? “More gins! But we’re also planning on growing and harvesting Juniper in the Vale of Glamorgan to produce our own gins making it a truly local and Welsh product. We have also been helping clubs and societies with their fundraising by conducting gin tasting sessions and ‘master classes’ time. Which are obviously great fun.” We’ll drink to that. 38

If you’re a retailer, hotel, bar, pub or restaurant that would like an Eccentric behind your bar, please get in touch. You can buy single bottles online at www.eccentricgin.com or on Saturdays from our outlet in Petertston super Ely or at Caerphilly. Call 029 20 397554. www.eccentricgin.com rob@eccentricgin.com

INTERNATIONAL FOR The International Centre for Birds of Prey celebrates its 50th anniversary this year - it’s the oldest dedicated birds of prey centre in the world. Wye Life chats with the Centre’s Director, Jemima Parry-Jones MBE.

Jemima, what led to the centre being set up? We opened the centre in May 1967. My father had worked for an actor called James Robertson Justice as his professional falconer and, when he finished that job, people would frequently come to see the few birds we had and ask his advice. So my parents thought it would be a good idea to move and start up a place where people could come and see birds of prey and learn how to look after them and partake in falconry. How has the centre evolved during the last fifty years? Over the years it has changed its focus. My father was a serious falconer, and although we have never forgotten our falconry beginnings the focus has quite rightly changed to look at the conservation of all birds of prey world-wide. The centre takes in injured wild birds of prey and where possible rehabilitates them back to the wild.

We take in up to 100 birds a year and have a very nice hospital area for them. We are open to the public and fly birds daily for each and every visitor. This is really important to us, because unless people appreciate the world around them, and want to see it preserved for themselves and their children, the conservation work we do will not succeed. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a falcon stoop or an owl float by, a group of kites diving on tiny bits of thrown meat, or an eagle soaring. All of this can be seen on a daily basis for our visitors throughout the year; we fly three times a day.

We’ve heard that the centre leads the world in captive breeding birds of prey? That’s correct. To date we’ve bred 67 species. The important thing about this is we share that knowledge. Right now our most important work is with vultures because they are now one of the most endangered groups in the world. So we work in India, Nepal, Bulgaria and South Africa teaching people how to conserve vultures. We also run courses and experience days. And, in the UK, we’re running a nest box scheme for Little Owls and Kestrels in apple orchards in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. The local apple growers have been amazingly helpful. Can you tell us about the events that you hold here? Our Owl Evenings are held in the winter, they’re great fun to come to. It’s very special to see the owls at night, especially flying outside in the dark with underground lighting.

CENTRE BIRDS OF PREY

“We also run Experience Days where you can learn to handle and fly various birds.”

We also run experience days where you can learn to handle and fly various birds. We have one big falconry event a year where we have lots of stands around the field with falconry equipment, wonderful artists, food and a bar. We have other people come in and fly birds as well as our normal demonstrations - it’s a great weekend. All the information about our events can be found on our website. How can our readers get involved with your work? Oh, that is a wonderful question! If you live locally, you can come and volunteer. You can volunteer on the bird side, the office, the shop, the café, as someone who can give guided tours (we will teach you) or even be a transporter for us to collect injured wild birds - again we will teach you. You can join as a member which means you can visit as often as you like in a year and most of our members become friends and get roped in for all sorts of things.

You could make donations to the work that we do, leave us legacy in your will, sponsor a bird, the options are myriad! Do you have any plans for your anniversary year? I was fortunate to be given an MBE for services to bird conservation by Her Majesty The Queen, and we are hoping for a Royal Visit this year from HRH The Princess Royal for our 50th anniversary which will be wonderful. We plan a major fundraising campaign as I have a ton of very exciting plans that will benefit not only the wonderful birds that live here, but also the visitors, giving them a better experience, and an appreciation of the conservation work that we do outside the centre as well.

We highly recommend a trip to the centre which is open daily from February 1st - November 30th 10.30am - 5.30pm or dusk (if earlier). Their café opens at 10.30am and closes at the beginning of the last flying demonstration of the day which is 4.15pm in the summer and 3.30pm in the winter.

The trees are bare, the nights are drawing in and a nip of frost spikes the air. The glow of Summer has faded fast and the golden leaves of autumn have all but disappeared.

LEWIS BALLARD It’s winter - the time for pulling on cosy jumpers and snuggling up in front of a glowing fire to write your Christmas list. In the exciting frenzy of choosing party outfits, scouting gifts and planning the holiday season with family and friends, it’s tempting to forget about everything else and leave more serious matters until the new year. Yet, Neil Ballard from Lewis Ballard Accountants reminds us that for the self-employed and landlords, hot on the heels of St Nick comes a far less friendly and more Grinch like figure. It’s the taxman and he wants your tax return filed and your tax paid. He’s making a list and he won’t be checking it twice. Miss the 31st January deadline and you’ll be straight on his naughty list. Wait until the new year to look for tax advice and you may find yourself out of luck. Last year almost half of 11.26 million tax returns filed were submitted in January and this year it’s likely to be even more. So hard pressed accountants may very well resemble Charles Dicken’s mild mannered, but over worked clerk, Bob Cratchit or worse still, may be as welcoming to your late requests as old Ebenezer Scrooge himself. You could do it yourself of course, but with no expert advice, if you run into difficulties, you can easily miss out on allowances and end up paying extra tax.

Or you could wait until February for help and face late filing penalties and fines instead. You may even file it on time, but owe more tax than you expected, just when your Christmas credit card bills are due to be paid. Suddenly that wonderful new year is looking anything but. Yet as Neil states ‘It doesn’t have to be that way. Getting your tax affairs sorted now means you can budget for your tax bill and enjoy the season of good will, stress free (over excited children and family rows excluded, of course).’ At Lewis Ballard we’ll ensure you enjoy the festive season, without worrying about unclear tax bills and looming deadlines. After-all, when New Year’s Eve is over, and your hangover is clearing, you’ll want to enjoy a happy and prosperous new year not a frantic scramble to meet submission and payment deadlines.

As Xero platinum members and recent finalists at the Xero National Awards Lewis Ballard have all the expertise you’ll need to become ready for the digital age. So, whether it’s the longterm digital challenge or a short-term tax return issue, just give us a jingle on the phone and we’ll make sure your future stays merry and bright.

“ Neil also recommends that when you’re listing your new year’s resolutions, put ‘keeping my records digitally’ at the top.”

Neil also recommends that when you’re listing your new year’s resolutions, put ‘keeping my records digitally’ at the top. Making tax digital for Personal Tax may have been put on hold until 2020, but the need to submit VAT and Corporation Tax digitally is coming much sooner and these changes can’t be ignored. Quarterly submissions will soon be reality and all businesses will need to embrace this digital challenge and leave the hand-written ledgers to Ebenezer and Bob. 42

Monmouthshire Conservatory Company are proud of their fabulous site at Pengethley Garden Centre in Ross-on-Wye and rightly so. We took our time to browse all the products and services this independent family-run business provides, before stopping to catch up with owner Chris Atwell. From the beautiful pine log cabins and superb bespoke greenhouses, to stylish furnished conservatories and skyrooms, the company’s showcase gives you a great feel for what might be possible in your own home and garden.

MONMOUTHSHIRE CONSERVATORY COMPANY Chris, your new Aluminium Skyroom Orangery is looking fantastic. Thank you. This build is a real showstopper; the Aluminium roof system, doors and windows are powder coated in a striking red finish and the outside painted in a subtle dovetail grey. The interior is complemented by a fully fitted contemporary kitchen, complete with granite worktops and central island. Here at Monmouthshire Conservatory Company, all of our show conservatories and orangeries are fully furnished. We hope to inspire our customers and allow them to visualise these builds as fully functioning spaces, designed to be utilised all year round. For our readers who haven’t benefited from seeing one, what exactly is a Skyroom? A Skyroom is a specific roof-system design.

This design incorporates aluminium frames married with large expanses of high-performance glass. It allows an abundance of natural light, similar to that of a conservatory; however, the finish emulates a classic orangery style. These results offer a contemporary, slimline and elegant build, bound to complement any home. Can you talk us through your showroom? Our show-site offers four fantastic builds for you to peruse and enjoy. Along with our new red Aluminium Skyroom, we also have a cream foil-coated UPVC conservatory. Next to this we have a black powder-coated Aluminium conservatory and last but not least, our impressive UPVc Livinroom orangery. Within these builds, we also have Bifold, sliding, French and composite doors as well as several window styles. 44

Any plans for the future? Our only plan for the future is to enjoy a year as positive and inspiring as 2016! We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy new year. We would also like to thank our fantastic team of trusted trades-people; without your skills, knowledge and commitment, we would not be the business we are today. Here’s to 2017 and hopefully, many more successful years to come. We’ll certainly second that - and a very happy and successful new year to you too Chris. Monmouthshire Conservatory Company’s show site is open from 9.15am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 10.30am - 4pm on Saturdays - remember to tell them Wye Life sent you.

enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.

Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.

Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.

What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.

Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to

Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

Butterfill’s has built and maintained a strong reputation for their superior flooring solutions and expert fitting service, as well as their diverse range of premium quality beds and mattresses, stylish solid wood furniture and contemporary home furnishings. Wye Life chats with Matthew and Sarah Butterfill in their beautiful showroom in the heart of Llandrindod Wells, Powys…

BUTTERFILL’S BEDS, FLOORING & FURNITURE

When was Butterfill’s launched? We first started trading in 2002, as an expert carpet and floor fitting service. We didn’t have a store back then, just a van, and Matthew did all the fittings and customer care himself. We established a solid reputation, becoming a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, and the business quickly grew through word-of-mouth. We opened our first floor fitting showroom in Builth Wells, but through conversations with customers, we were often asked if we did furniture as well, or if we could recommend somewhere locally that “did good beds”! We explored the best UK manufacturers, and soon became an approved Silentnight and Rest Assured retailer.

This is a fabulous showroom, we understand you moved here last year. Thank you. Yes. Over the years, thanks to amazing customer support and interest, our business and product ranges have grown significantly. It’s important for us to create an open and welcoming customer experience, but we were running out of space at our Builth showroom, with no possibility to expand. We saw an exciting opportunity to acquire a character building in Llandrindod Wells that would give us more open space to develop ‘departments’, offer a more diverse range of products, and therefore create a better spacial experience for our customers.

“We always look for UK-made products.” 48

What can our readers expect to find at your showroom? We offer one of the largest displays of flooring solutions in the area, including Cormar, Karndean, and The Alternative Flooring Co. We have a diverse range of beautifully crafted solid oak and pine furniture lines for the dining room, bedroom and lounge, plus leather and bespoke fabric sofas and chairs. Quilts and pillows from The Fine Bedding Company and Silentnight, plus a complementary selection of home furnishings, accessories, mirrors and lighting. How do you choose what products to retail? We visit the big furniture and design trade fairs, and meet directly with the manufacturers and suppliers. We always look for UK-made products, produced ethically using sustainable materials.

We’re not simply driven by design trends, but by the quality, craftsmanship, durability and long term appeal of every item based on our understanding of our customers, so we carefully and thoughtfully hand pick every item based on these values. Do you offer a delivery service? Absolutely, as well as a free quote and measurement service on our flooring. Plus we install and position furniture items where the customers want them, and remove old items and packaging. We pride ourselves on the highest levels of tailored customer care and service.

managed the floor refurbishment at Llangoed Hall Hotel near Boughrood. What sets you apart from other furniture stores? We believe it’s our attitude to delivering a personal service throughout every aspect of our business. It’s vital that each customer feels important, valued, and satisfied. Our brand motto is, “when only the best will do”, and we work hard to live by this every day.

Opening times Monday - Saturday: 9am - 5pm (4.30pm on Saturday) Butterfill’s Victoria Arcade, Middleton Street Llandrindod Wells, Powys LD1 5DG

Welsh Overland Safari is an independent tour company offering unique overland guided tours of some of the most beautiful, unspoilt landscapes in Europe, as well as rare natural habitats for wildlife. One of Wales’s best kept secrets, the region has a rich and diverse history dating back to well before Roman times. Wye Life chats with Richard Davies about exploring the rugged mountains, lakes, waterfalls and forests of the area.

WELSH OVERLAND Richard what led to you set up the Welsh Overland Safari? My wife and I have been running a successful self-catering and B&B (Pwllgwilym Holiday Cottages), for the past ten years. Having lived and breathed Mid Wales all of my life, coupled with my passion and knowledge of the area, it was a natural progression to set up a tour guide business after a number of requests from guests.

Can you explain what your tours entail? Pre-tour we will discuss what people are looking to get out of their trip; be it sightseeing, walking or a mixture. Once we have tailored a tour specific to the individuals or group we will arrange a pick up point and go from there. You can expect to see a variety of sights, learn about myths and legends along the way and dine at one of our handpicked local eateries, what more would you want?!

How long are your tours? Our set tours range from a full day, approximately eight hours, or a half day, four hours. This may sound a lot but there is a lot to pack in and you’ll be surprised how time flies. As mentioned, we are very flexible to a group’s needs; we have arranged longer tours over a couple of days that include photography courses, bushcraft and falconry experiences - best thing to do is pick up the phone, have a chat and we’ll do our very best to help. What hidden gems are there to be found in Mid Wales? In all honesty too many to mention. To give you a flavour, I’d pick Henrhyd waterfall - it’s the tallest waterfall in the Brecon Beacons with a ninety foot drop, and a little known fact - it was featured as the Batcave in the Dark Knight Rises movie, you can walk behind it and is very easy to access unlike some of the others in the area. 50

The remotest chapel in Wales, Soar-YMynydd, is always very popular and Llanthony Priory where you will find Cwmyoy Church - our very own leaning tower of Pisa right here in Wales.

Congratulations on being finalists at the 2016 Brecon Beacons Tourism Awards recently - do you have any other awards? Thank you - and yes we have. Our B&B, Pwllgwilym Holiday Cottages were recently voted the best B&B in Wales and third best in the UK by Trivago, a worldwide accommodation specialist, for 2017. The award was based on reviews across a number of booking websites and we are over the moon that all our hard work is being recognised, but even more than that we’re humbled that we must be doing something right.

“We aim always to keep our standards high across both businesses.”

SAFARI Apart from more awards, do you have any plans for the future? We aim always to keep our standards high across both businesses and deliver excellent customer service. We have upgraded our website which is very exciting, and I have recently become a Brecon Beacons National Park Dark Skies ambassador, so a dark skies tour would be something we’ve been asked about and would love to develop over time. Richard, you had us at Batcave we love the idea of these fantastic guided tours, in fact we’re checking our diaries to see when we can fit in a tour (or two).

Hedgehogs Nursery has an excellent reputation for providing a caring, safe and fun-filled environment for babies and children aged three months to four years old. As part of the Dean Close Foundation it belongs to a group of four nurseries/preschools: Teddies, Robins, Squirrels and Hedgehogs. They share the excellent resources and expertise of leading co-educational day and boarding schools: Dean Close in Cheltenham, and St John’s on-the-Hill in Chepstow. Wye Life chats with Manager Nicole Ricketts.

HEDGEHOGS NURSERY Nicole can you tell us a bit about your background and what attracted you to Hedgehogs? Having completed a Law Degree, I started training to be a solicitor but decided that career wasn’t for me. I then completed my Primary and Early Years Teaching Qualification followed by a Masters in Early Education. I am now delighted to be the manager of Hedgehogs. I was attracted to Hedgehogs Nursery because the team shared my passion for early childhood education. We appreciate the unique needs of every child and offer a flexible learning environment that celebrates the many stages of children’s development. What advice would you offer our readers who may be embarking on choosing a nursery? I always ask parents about whether they have visited other childcare providers.

It is important for parents to get a feel for the different settings. Some will be more play based, others academic, some will be smaller, bigger etc. Until you get an idea about what’s available, it is hard to establish what is important to you. As parents go round the different settings, similarities and differences will be visible; it’s about focusing on what is important for you and for your child. What would you tell parents about Hedgehogs on their first visit here? I always tell parents about how our highly qualified staff provide the best care, learning experiences and stimulating environment for young children. Our homely babies suite caters for ages 3 to 18 months, our open-plan toddler room is perfect for children aged 12 to 36 months, and preschool from 36 months to school age. 54

As a nursery we are always developing, through staff attending specialist training and investment in resources and facilities. We recently completed a refurb of our toddler room, giving it a fresh new look and some exciting new equipment, including an indoor gym. What’s a typical daily routine at Hedgehogs? We open at 7.30am, at which point our children have a hearty “buffet” style breakfast which gets them ready for their day. After breakfast they dive straight into play - whether that is indoors or outdoors. Adults will enhance children’s play, challenging them and extending their learning. Some activities are adult led, which may focus on specific areas of development, but adults are guided by our children’s interests.

What makes Hedgehogs stand out? Our parents appreciate the extracurricular clubs that we offer. Our pre-schoolers have weekly swimming lessons, music club, dance club, French lessons and rugby club as well as opportunities to go on regular trips and outings using our school minibuses. Our toddlers get to join in the fun too; they also have a weekly dance class, multisensory French sessions and a music club. We are very fortunate to be based on the St John’s school site so have lots of outdoor space for exploring, a sports hall for soft play and PE sessions, and a professional stage for concerts and ceremonies. The opportunity to access teachers who can bring a wealth of knowledge in subjects such as science, music, art and PE is invaluable.

When Steve Lewis and Tracey Lewis were building their stunning new home, they needed a reputable, passionate and creative company to supply them with windows and bi-fold doors. Here, Mr Lewis tells us more.

A TOUCH OF GLASS

Who are you and what do you do? We have recently moved back to Wales after twenty years of living overseas in Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai. We have a consultancy business providing specialist contract advice to construction companies in the Middle East, Asia and UK. I split my time between Wales and Dubai at the moment, serving our client base in both UK and GCC regions. Tracey is based in Wales and takes care of the administrative side of the business as well as managing the home and our three children. Tell us about your home? Before moving back to Wales we spent the best part of a year finding the right plot. Our criteria was to find a property that needed modernising, within walking distance of Cowbridge and on an elevated site. We eventually found a house for sale which was built in the 1970s and met our criteria.

After further research of the VAT rules and, based on the condition survey results, we decided to demolish the entire house and build a new dwelling rather than going down the refurb route. From that point forward our criteria was to only engage package contractors and suppliers that were passionate about their trade and or products. We also made a conscious effort to source local tradesmen and suppliers to put something back into the community. This worked well and we employed a Cowbridge based architect (Don Mitchell Associates) and even a steel fabricator living in the same street. How did you hear about Alexander James? Alexander James were introduced to us by the quantity surveyor who was responsible for sourcing trade contractors that fitted with our criteria. 56

Did you get quotations from other companies? Yes, the quantity surveyor and architect introduced us to three or four other windows and bi-fold door suppliers who we also interviewed and received quotes from. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? The passion of its management team and the insightful technical questions asked by Alexander James at tender interview made it clear they were thinking seriously about the challenges of the job (both logistical and operational). This gave us and the architect the comfort that Alexander James were capable of delivering a quality installation. Were their quotes competitive? Yes, in addition to the passion and technical competence, Alexander James’s price was competitive.

In fact, they came in just under budget, so we were able to add on additional features such as in glass blinds and enhanced finished to the windows and door frames. What work did they carry out for you? Alexander James supplied and installed over seventeen windows all of various shapes and sizes, some of them being complex triangular sections. Alexander James also installed three bi-folding doors, each of them over 3m wide. How did you find the process of working with Alexander James? We found them a pleasure to work with. The work was to a great standard and completed on time. Their on-site team are very professional and friendly. Their after sales service is also efficient and responsive to the usual snagging issues that arise as the building settles. In fact, we required some additional work in the form of a dog flap to the glass back door.

Everyone told us it could not be done in a full glass panel due to the risk of breaking, but Alexander James said they would welcome the challenge and came up with a solution by using thicker glass. This vindicates our reasoning for seeking out companies passionate about what they do, since Alexander James’s competitors who are solely focused on maximising profits, may not have invested the time in giving us the desired solution. Are you enjoying your new home? Yes, it’s fantastic and has turned out better than we expected. Again this is down to tradesmen taking pride in their work and making sure they not only deliver what is contracted, but going the extra mile when they see an opportunity to enhance features. With regards to Alexander James’s work scope, our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. 57

When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape. Would you be happy to recommend Alexander James to family, friends and colleagues? Yes. Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation. CHRISTMAS IS DELICIOUS AT COBBLES Situated in a gorgeous 17th Century barn on the cusp of The Vale of Glamorgan, you’ll find the little gem that is Cobbles. We spoke to owner Chloe Francis to find out more.

The Kitchen & Deli serves tastetempting Breakfast and Lunches, with specials to surprise you on the daily. All the ingredients are locally sourced so you know exactly where each mouthful is from! They’ve recently been undergoing some renovations that mean you can now dine under the blanket of darkness as they are open evenings, all possible with the help of a grant from the Welsh Government. That’s not the only exciting news as they prepare for a busy calendar in the run up to Christmas.

“You’re guaranteed a delicious meal in stunning surroundings looked after by great staff.”

Tell us about the idea behind Cobbles? I grew up around food, both my grandparents ran tearooms and my aunt and uncle owned a restaurant so it’s been a constant feature throughout my life, I always dreamed of doing it myself one day. I’ve always had a passion for cooking even whilst growing up. I wanted to infuse that passion into Cobbles. What makes you so popular? I think it’s a combination of location, the building, staff and of course the food. We’re really lucky and proud to call our home Ty Maen Farm Buildings. The farm itself dates back to 1535 and the barns are all Grade II listed so full of character and charm! Our chefs were born to be chefs; they’re doing what they wanted to do when they were kids - it’s their calling. 58

We’ve got a beautiful balance of elements and we all enjoy being at Cobbles and I think it shows. What can diners expect? We’re open from breakfast till bedtime; so whether you are stopping by after a stroll across the beach to enjoy our Brecwast Fawr, or coming to enjoy an evening of songs and supper, you can expect a seasonal menu of exceptional dishes accompanied by a live acoustic performance from the mezzanine above the dining area. Whatever the reason for your visit you’re guaranteed a delicious meal in stunning surroundings looked after by great staff. Talk to us about the Deli? I opened the Deli in one of the smaller barns in June last year, the café has been up and running for just 6 months.

I’d noticed a definite trend in customers that are concerned and interested in the provenance of their food. I also noticed a lack of local independent retail outlets that you could pick up Welsh produce, so I decided to open the Deli. We offer a platform to local farmers and producers as well as offering the customers a place to pick up their bread, eggs, milk, and beer and not forgetting our famous homemade pies and cakes too.

Cobbles Kitchen & Deli Ty Maen Farm Buildings Ogmore by Sea Vale of Glamorgan CF32 0QP

What drives you to do what you do each day? I absolutely love doing what I do. I think it’s this passion that drives me day in day out. I don’t get bored as we’re constantly evolving and growing. Being independent means we can make changes, we can mix it up and keep things fresh and exciting… I love it!

Established for over thirty years, Acer Tree Services are experienced and professional tree surgeons offering a complete range of services to both local businesses and private clients. Operating to the highest standards, they are independently audited and approved by the Arboriculture Association.

ACER TREE SERVICES

Independently owned and managed by Joe Brandt, the highly experienced and qualified team at Acer Tree Services have been providing a complete range of professional tree services to their customers across Herefordshire and the surrounding counties for over thirty years. From essential tree maintenance through to tree felling and stump removal, they are committed to delivering a prompt, high quality and reliable service every time. “For each job we carry out an initial, no obligation site visit” explains Joe, “which allows us to assess the specific job requirements

and any potential health and safety or environmental issues. Only then will we take the customer through our recommendation and agree a course of action”. The team at Acer also have the experience to advise customers on dealing with Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and any requirements of the local planning process. In addition, they offer a 24 hour call out service for emergencies. As you would expect, Acer Tree Services are covered by £5m public liability insurance alongside £5m employers liability insurance. “Having insurance is obviously important for customer peace of mind, but the critical 62

thing is not having to call on it,” says Joe. “That is why staff training and attention to detail is a priority in all that we do”. They manage their work to the latest British Standards, with staff trained to the highest levels in not only all aspects of tree surgery and the operation of associated machinery, but also in important areas such as first aid, aerial rescue, and traffic management. “When dealing with potentially dangerous machines like chainsaws, sometimes in extreme conditions, health and safety has to be at the forefront of our minds”. It is this ‘belt and braces’ professional approach that has not only made the

PORK & T WO VEG Award-winning rare breed, free range pork sausages. Before climbing up and down trees for a living, Joe Brandt of Acer Trees enjoyed working on the family farm, a passion that never left him. So in 2010 he started raising rare breed pigs on the five acre small holding that surrounds his Woolhope home, and Pork & Two Veg was born. The free range pigs are raised in a sustainable way, maturing slowly for the best possible flavour. The resulting sausages, bacon and pork joints proved so popular with local customers and businesses alike, that a handful of pigs soon became fifty or sixty. The Pork & Two Veg Farm Shop opened three years ago, selling not only pork but also a selection of goods from other small local Herefordshire producers. This was followed by the sight of Joe and his wife Sally in their catering trailer appearing at local food fairs, fetes and village events cooking up the Full Porky! In 2014 they received national recognition when their Herefordshire inspired Pork & Elderflower sausage won a Golden Banger award in British Sausage week. As part of that service, and knowing that not all jobs need professional tree surgeons to carry them out, Acer Tree Services have recently started a one day workshop to provide people with the basic knowledge and skills to maintain and operate a chainsaw safely.

“Many people own or hire chainsaws for small jobs such as cutting up logs. We want to make sure that they do it safely and know how to look after their saw. If people are interested, all details can be found on our website.” With different challenges every day, Joe and his team are ready and equipped to take them on.

Gary & Karen Homewood are delighted to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter Amy to Mr Sam Nicholls. Their wedding will, of course, be held at the gorgeous Glewstone Court Country House where they work full time in the family business; Amy in the role of Events & Marketing Manager and Sam as Hotel Manager.

GLEWSTONE COURT Sam and Amy met at The George in Stamford where they both worked in hospitality, and Glewstone Court has given them the opportunity to put their training and skills into practice at an entirely different level. The guest feedback and awards are testimony to their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to delivering a unique customer experience. So, in December 2018 it will be their turn to experience some of the magic of a dream wedding at Glewstone Court Country House. Congratulations Amy on your recent engagement to Sam. We’ve heard that Sam proposed to you on the banks of the Thames on your birthday (see photo). That sounds like one of the most romantic proposals. Now your feet are back on the ground, what else is new since we last saw you? Thank you! It was very romantic, the perfect day. 2016 was a very good year for us - we continued our programme of

refurbishment with a complete overhaul of The Shelley and Farquaad rooms, and also carried out further essential restoration work to maintain the integrity and beauty of the magnificent Grade II listed Manor House, all of which we are sure will enhance the guest experience and enjoyment of Glewstone Court Country House. And you promised us news of exciting events planned for 2017! Can you reveal those plans now? We’ve increased our Wine Tasting Dinners from six to nine this year by popular demand, so make sure you look out for these each month - especially those presented by wine growers. Our next one will be on Saturday 1st April. We will be holding another Murder Mystery event this Summer in May as the humour and innuendos in this extremely well received cabaret act was the perfect accompaniment to our delicious three course dinner. We will also be holding our annual Jazz Night again this year in August; we’re hoping for lots of sunshine so cocktails can be served in our fabulous courtyard.

We know that local, seasonal produce is of the very highest importance for you. Yes, wherever possible our Head Chef sources the ingredients for our menus from local suppliers. This not only ensures the freshness and best quality possible, but supports local growers and businesses. Our menus use Welsh Lamb and Herefordshire Beef, locally produced fruit, vegetables, and cheeses. This includes our six course Taster Menu introduced in the last quarter of 2016 which has proved very popular with our food enthusiasts and for those special occasions and celebrations. You can also find a wine produced from locally grown grapes on the wine list!

What are you planning for Mother’s Day? We have a special Sunday lunch menu available on Mother’s Day with delicious hand-crafted desserts so we can help you to really spoil mum! What are your hopes and plans for the future? We have lots of plans, but not all of them can be revealed yet! We absolutely love planning and hosting events, especially weddings, and had many wonderful couples tie the knot here in 2015 and 2016.

We’re working with Debbie Hutchinson this year hosting various small events to help support Breast Cancer Haven, starting with the Big Tea Cosy which took place on February 1st. Glewstone Court is also being used increasingly by local businesses both as a conference and meeting venue and for company and client dinners. Keep up to date with our events and news by following us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We look forward to seeing you all this year.

With weddings already planned and booked as far as 2020 we want to extend our options further to give couples the opportunity to say their vows in the garden beneath our fabulous Cedar of Lebanon tree with stunning views across Herefordshire. Therefore we are looking at outdoor ceremony structures and pergolas with floral arches for a truly romantic countryside wedding ceremony.

COWBRIDGE

Colours of Cowbridge celebrates 30 years! In a world of generic high street fashions it is wonderful to see when a small independant business celebrates a landmark occasion, which is why Colours of Cowbridge’s 30th year celebration is such a massive achievement. This wonderful shop is still going strong and decided to celebrate in style. Starting the party at 9am Colours of Cowbridge invited their loyal regulars - along with anyone excited by new fashions - to come and join the fun. With baloons, chocolates, and (of course) a few glasses of bubbly, the celebrations lasted all day, finally coming to a happy end at 10pm! With faces old and new toasting to their success, we wish all the best to Colours of Cowbridge, here is to another 30 years! 66 Eastgate, Cowbridge CF71 7AB 01446 774620 New website coming soon www.coloursofcowbridge.co.uk
