West Life magazine is written, designed and produced in West Wales for the people of West Wales and Cardigan Bay. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. We make a visit to Carew Airfield in Pembrokeshire to find out about their family run market that has been thriving for over 35 years, and what else they have going on at the Airfield, page 22. Also inside, we visit a historic school in Carmarthenshire, we talk fairies with Jason Banbury and we get creative with jewellery designer Emily Green. And Spring wouldn’t be Spring without a spot of gardening, and bees of course. We share our pick of garden related businesses on page 15, and we talk to the Doctors in association with the International Bee Research Association who tell us all about the importance behind their research, on page 12.

Theatr Mwldan screens Pompeii Live
Tresaith waterfall makes creativity flow
This year the British Museum welcomes more than 450 objects from the ancient Italian cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum to the major exhibition Life and death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, the first exhibition on Pompeii in London for almost 40 years.
We received this rather beautiful picture from Aeron John of the waterfall at Tresaith Beach, north of Cardigan (Aberporth).
Together with this, the British Museum will stage Pompeii Live - the first live cinema event produced by the British Museum from a major exhibition. This event will screen at Theatr Mwldan on 19th June at 8.30pm (captured as live on 18th June).
See the wonders of the Life and death in Pompeii and Herculaneum exhibition from the comfort of the cinema, introduced live by British Museum Director Neil MacGregor. Mary Beard, Rachel de Thame, Giorgio Locatelli and Exhibition Curator Paul Roberts will also be on hand to help bring extraordinary objects to life in this truly unique event.
A special live broadcast to schools (which is suitable for Key Stages 2) will be screened live via satellite at 11am the same day.
Tickets for the public screening are £12.50 (£11.50). Schools are advised to contact Mwldan’s box office for further details of the schools screening. Tickets can be booked online at www.mwldan.co.uk, on 01239 621200, or via smart phones by visiting mwldan.ticketsolve.com/mobile.

Howies - go where the roads don’t
Busy bees are growing business naturally
Cardigan based clothing company Howies has designed a new T-shirt entitled ‘Go Where The Roads Don’t’.
Beekeepers Rachel and Jon Milgate are creating quite a buzz with their Bee Fruitful brand of products across South Wales.
The company has built a global following through its quirky marketing and alignment with the off-road cycling community. Here at West Life we have to admit we’re fans and it’s great to see companies manufacturing here in our neck of the woods.
We think it’s wonderful. Hope you like it too. More of Aeron’s work can be viewed on his website. Go to www.aeronjohnphotography.co.uk
Also take a look at www.pembrokeshirephotowalks.co.uk
Bee Fruitful has grown from a single hive just four years ago to twelve hives across four locations and it’s the ‘localness’ of the honey that the couple are passionate about. Besides honey, Bee Fruitful sells beeswax blocks, beeswax furniture polish, beeswax candles and hand-rolled candles. They also offer gift baskets and have created a popular range of natural cosmetics and a baby range of soaps and creams and claim they’ll ‘bee’ kind to delicate skin. Bee Fruitful currently has stockists in Llantwit Major, Bridgend, Porthcawl and Monmouth and welcomes trade enquiries from across South Wales.

IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE Within its 45 acres of safe, wooded campus there is a wonderful mix of traditional and modern; a truly global approach to education and an international reputation for sport. Mellow old buildings blend with modern teaching faculties and pupils have access to the very latest technology and facilities. Headmaster Guy Ayling says, “Our parents and pupils speak of the ‘unique feeling’ they get at Llandovery College which, they say, sets us apart from other schools. We believe this is because we are a small school with a strong sense of community and which values respect, honesty, integrity and academic determination. All this is strongly rooted in our Welsh culture and heritage.” Academic excellence is Llandovery College’s primary aim and their 2012 A Level examination results reflect this. Through the College’s thriving Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, pupils often discover unexpected talents while acquiring the vital skills of leadership, responsibility, consideration and endurance. After twenty years of providing hand-finished, made-to-measure curtains, blinds and bedding for customers’ homes and businesses, Helen and David Pickering finally think it’s time to celebrate.
CLASS ACT Helen, the business principal, started her business life at the age of 18, after gaining her qualifications at Hinckley College in Leicestershire and spent a short period working in a fabric shop before realising she wanted to go it alone. With the aid of a small government grant, Classy Curtains was born.
Over the decades, the business has faced stiff competition, economic ups and downs and several recessions but Classy Curtains continues to grow and Helen and David meet the challenges as they have always done. “We’re pretty resilient!” David exclaims. “You don’t last twenty years in business if you don’t get it right.”
Helen initially worked from her then family home and now, twenty years later, having steadily grown the business and gaining a wealth of experience and a loyal following of what she calls “her wonderful customers”, Helen is taking the opportunity of this special anniversary to reflect on twenty years in business.
I ask Helen why she thinks customers keep coming back? “I never take a customer for granted, no matter how long I’ve worked with them. I arrive at an appointment on time or at least keep the customer updated if I’m running behind.
I’m always there to help, regardless of the value of the order. We produce good work but I think it’s also because people like us. We offer home visits so we understand the context and the setting.”
Helen says, “Starting a business so young there where many challenges, especially in the beginning overcoming issues with my age and inexperience, struggling to acquire those first few jobs was difficult.”
Classy Curtains is now producing curtains and blinds for the children of those early customers. “It is so satisfying,” Helen says. “Once-upon-atime it was teddy bears or tractors, now it’s swags, ring heading or triple pleat curtains for their new homes, and they’re now having children. We’ve grown as they’ve grown”
However, providing a quality product and taking great care to impress, Helen’s business took off and work referrals grew and, with them, new clients. Eventually that seed grew and Helen was soon the ‘go to’ person for custommade soft furnishings.
Springtime is always busy for Helen. “The spring brings fresh ideas, new fabrics, new ranges and change,” she enthuses. “It’s a lovely time of the year and one I particularly enjoy. It’s as if people have come out of hibernation and are ready for a change.”

Bee welfare is very much in the news at the moment and South Wales is a hotbed of research and campaigning. West Life talks to Dr. Sarah Maddocks and Dr Rowena Jenkins about their research, and their association with The International Bee Research Association (IBRA).
PLAN BEE Please tell us about your roles at Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC)? SARAH I’m a lecturer in Microbiology at Cardiff Metropolitan University which is a role that combines teaching and research. ROWENA I’m a Post-doctoral researcher. We work as part of an established research group that has been investigating the antimicrobial properties of honeys. Our roles mean that we also have the opportunity to engage with the public and things like NSEW and other outreach events.
Please explain your research... SARAH Our research has been on-going for numerous years and we were the first group to thoroughly describe the antimicrobial properties of manuka and other honeys, as such we still remain to be world leaders in the field. We are studying honey as a topical antimicrobial agent that can be applied to wounds to prevent, or to treat, bacterial infection - to be used alongside or as an alternative to currently prescribed antibiotics and antiseptics.
More recently we’ve begun to develop a better understanding of exactly how manuka honey works when it inhibits or kills bacteria, which is important to underpin increased use of honey in the clinical environment. It must be stressed that the honey we use is a specially produced sterile, medical-grade honey and not honey from a supermarket or health store which should not be used as medical treatments. Can you explain what IBRA does? ROWENA IBRA is essentially the world's longest established apicultural research publishers. The organisation is over 60 years old and promotes the value of bees by providing information on bee science and beekeeping.
SARAH IBRA publishes award-winning publications that are well respected all over the world right here in Cardiff. It’s run on a not-for-profit basis and is funded purely from the generosity of its members and supporters, and by donations and legacies. They also do important work with schools and organisations here in Wales and around the world to promote the understanding of bees and bee-keeping.
When did you first become aware of IBRA’s work? ROWENA As a research group studying honey, we have always had close ties with IBRA and some of our research has been published in IBRA journals. We’ve become increasingly aware of IBRAs work to raise awareness of bee welfare as a consequence of this and through contact with bee-keepers and beekeeper interest groups on, for example, LinkedIn and Twitter. I’ve presented our work at many bee-keeper meetings. How has IBRA helped you with your research? SARAH IBRA has enabled us to be in contact with bee-keepers who have been using honeys for many years and recognise the health benefits; also as a resource for publications. This has expanded the opportunities we have to engage with a broader audience and not just the scientific community. Looking ahead, we hope to embark on more joint ventures where we can support the work of IBRA and they can feed into ours.

R ESEARC H EXC ELLEN CE
IBRA, at the heart of bee research The International Bee Research Association, IBRA, has been supporting bee research since 1949. As publishers of the much respected Journal of Apicultural Research, the organisation continues to disseminate the work of the world’s leading scientists publishing work in English, Spanish and Mandarin. The small South Wales based team works closely with industry specialists from around the globe to produce books and journals of a world class standard. IBRA are publishers of the much publicised BEE BOOK - a collection of research material that is the definitive guide to studying the honey bee, through the EU COLOSS programme. IBRA values all species of bee and their international programmes help to: ■ Inspire and educate the next generation of scientists and beekeepers through schools ■ Support conservation of lost species in the UK and Europe ■ Promote sustainability through beekeeping in the Third World ■ Help research scientists in developing countries get their voices heard.

What can the general public do to improve bee welfare? ROWENA There was an article in the Guardian recently, and other national press papers have also highlighted problems associated with declining bee numbers and the associated causes. So the public really needs to be aware of the needs of bees and the huge problems that the loss of the bee population could potentially have. Everyone can help to provide a bee friendly environment by planting the right sorts of plants that attract them as much of the natural habitat is being lost due to farming or a preference for ornamental gardens that don’t have many plants or flowers. Pesticides are a problem as many can be toxic to bees as well as the pests they are aimed at removing, so reduced use of these or swapping to things like a dilute solution of washing up liquid to deter pests would be a big help. In fact, there is a new campaign which is part of the Bee Cause which aims to create Bee Worlds which are spaces filled with wild flowers and forage plants where bees can flourish.
SARAH
“Everyone can help to provide a bee friendly environment...” Career-wise, where do you see yourselves in the future? SARAH There is still so much to understand about honeys as antimicrobial treatments and we are only just beginning to understand exactly how honeys kill or inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, such as those that infect wounds, so we anticipate that our research into honey will continue well into the future.
Become a member... IBRA members receive their quality, quarterly journal ‘Bee World’ as well as gaining access to a back catalogue of research papers online. Members and subscribers know that the information that IBRA provides can always be trusted and members and supporters can be confident that all monies received go towards helping the future of bees.
ROWENA It would be good to see some robust clinical trials and greater use of honey as a primary treatment for wound infection.
See the Plants For Bees article for beefriendly planting on page 73. If you would like to help IBRA’s ongoing research into bee welfare by making a donation, please contact them at the following address (boxed right).

Bees have had a tough time of late. 2012 was an incredibly wet year so bees really struggled, but there’s a lot we can do to help them and, in turn, help ourselves in the spring garden.
PLANTS FOR BEES Be careful around this time of year because wasps are also attracted to many of the plants that bees are but they are less tolerable to our interference. Wasps also tend to like the same treats as we do such as Ice cream on a beach even though we may be the only ones there, they still want to share it with you, and having the ability to sting more than once it pays to give them a little more respect. I’ve recently been reading this beautifully illustrated book, Plants For Bees, published by the International Bee Research Association in Cardiff. Its author, William Kirk, has done a fantastic job of collating the material into a superb reference book and, what’s more, it is beautifully illustrated. If you care for bees and want to know what to plant in your garden to get their attention, Plants For Bees is a must have. EXCLUSIVE WES T LIFE OFFER
At the beginning of Spring the first plants to flower and attract the attention of early awakening bees are the heathers. When the temperature gets close to 10 degrees Celsius honey bees are one of the first signs that spring is here. Take a walk around any well stocked garden centre on a sunny day in April and the Heathers are literally buzzing. Most of the Spring-flowering Heathers are Erica’s, and they provide colour in the garden with their reds, pinks, and whites and provide vital food for hungry bees.
As soon as summer arrives there’s a larger selection of flowering shrubs and perennials that will provide a steady supply of food for bees to last them through to the end of autumn. As well as Heathers other Spring-flowering plants that are friendly to bees include Mahonias, Salix (Willow), Skimmia, and Viburnum. Throughout the summer and into autumn, the bees’ attention turns to Cotoneasters, Lavenders, Buddleja, Hebes, Caryopteris, and roses. Being a photographer is no easy business. It can be hard to set yourself apart from the competition but one photographic team in St Clears seems to be casting quite a spell.
A KIND OF MAGIC Jason and Lorna are a creative partnership living and working in St Clears, Carmarthenshire. Their Fairy concept has become extremely popular - especially with the young ladies of West Wales. We caught up with the creative couple. Jason, originally from Manchester, has lived in Wales since 2000. His background is IT, having worked with major blue chip companies throughout the UK and overseas. His love of photography started almost ten years ago and in 2007 Jason decided to focus full time on his passion for sports and architectural photography, travelling extensively around the UK and Europe. Neath-born Lorna has worked as an interior designer for over twenty years, running a successful design practice which specialises in 4 and 5 star hotel refurbishment projects. In 2010, Lorna joined forces with Jason in the photography practice, bringing her imaginative and fun ideas to the mix. Their combination of technical skills, artistic flair and passion to create beautiful images, has been the inspiration behind much of the work they produce. They shoot in a relaxed and fun way - always the consummate professionals with a keen eye for detail and an ever-changing appetite for new ideas and themes.
T H E FA IRIES C O N C EP T
THE FAIR IES P HO TO SHOOT
The concept for the Fairy Photography sessions stemmed from Lorna’s long love of Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies - illustrations she had always admired as a child. Knowing how magical it would be for little girls to become fairies for a photo shoot, Lorna set about researching outfits and wings, finally finding two fabulous costume designers in California who have created the initial Banbury Fairy collection. It was essential that the outfits and wings had to look real, and special, and not be something easily purchased on the high street.
Fairy Photo Sessions run on set dates throughout the year and are designed for ages four and over. A fairy session costs a very reasonable £25 per fairy and this includes a 7x5” print which is selected from a gallery viewing a couple of weeks after the session.
With the costumes in place, Lorna and Jay then set about creating the sets, commissioning a giant carved toadstool from a local woodworker and spending long hours testing and perfecting their magical illuminated effects. The postshoot magic is Jay’s forte and he spends hours working on each fairy’s gallery to ensure the right amount of ‘magic touches’ are in place - quite a contrast to photographing sports cars. The latest addition to their fairytale sets is the ‘Fairy Throne’ and this summer will see the unveiling of a new theme. Jay said, “We’ve had quite a few fairies ask to come back again - so we thought okay, let’s make sure that when they return they can try something a little bit different.”
Lorna said, “There is always an option to purchase more prints though never an obligation to do so. Each fairy spends approximately 45 minutes in the studio on the day. It’s not a rushed affair and we take time to get to know our young clients first - the studio is a new space and sometimes the sheer excitement of being a fairy can be overwhelming for little ones. Often two friends will come together for the session and this is a great idea for those who are a little less confident. We’ve even had a few Mums join in and become ‘Fairy Queens’ and yes, we do have dresses in adult sizes too! WIZ AR D S & WAR R IO R S
We were curious whether they offered anything for boys? “Oh yes,” says Jason, “We’ve created a Wizard and Warrior photo shoot suitable for over five years old - a full hour of theatrical effects including a Wizard’s Study and the Warrior’s Castle. Again, we have spent time creating a fun set where magic abounds. As with the fairies, all costumes and props are provided and each young man is given the opportunity to be both Wizard and Warrior during their time at the studio. Sessions are £30 per child which includes a print.” The Jason Banbury studio is on the main road in St Clears - a short drive from Folly Farm, Heatherton and Tenby so convenient for visitors to the area. A chance encounter at Pembrokeshire County Show was the catalyst for the gorgeous transformation of Mr and Mrs Bauer’s kitchen, owners of the award-winning Timber Hill Lodges & Cottage near Haverfordwest.
TIMBER KITCHEN Would you recommend GW Of St Clears to family and friends? We are delighted with the result, and now have a kitchen that naturally flows and allows an easy access to the patio and with the extra light coming in it feels as if we are sharing it more with the garden. We can’t wait for the longer, sunnier days to throw our doors open.
Timber Hill lodges and cottage can be viewed at www.timberhill.co.uk
What made you choose GW Of St Clears to undertake your work? We walked into their showroom display tent a couple of years ago at the Pembrokeshire County Show. We had been contemplating updating our old kitchen for quite some time and, being suitably impressed with the displays that they had there, asked them if they would like to come out and offer some suggestions. It was spur of the moment stuff but sometimes life is like that.
What work did GW so for you? When we met to view the initial plans and designs, we were surprised how different it was to what we had envisaged, but we could see that it did make the best use of the space. It also made the most of the beautiful view mainly because it gave us two patio doors, rather than the previous single door. A second patio door was created where a window over the kitchen sink had been.
Did you have an input into the design or did you leave it to GW? A kitchen designer came out at the agreed time and we felt immediately confident with their approach to the project. We offered a couple of important details that we were looking for, such as improved space around the kitchen dining table and perhaps the inclusion of an island but, other than that, gave them a free hand.
Was the project completed on time and on budget? After several further meetings we were very close to the finished design but, for a variety of reasons, we waited another twelve months before deciding to go ahead. Being naturally cautious, we were concerned about the amount of work that was required, but we need not have worried - everything went perfectly. The workforce had a lot to do to prepare for the kitchen fitting, which involved removing the ceiling, reinforcing joists, creating new drainage and completely rewiring. They were always courteous and careful and they made the whole process as trouble free as possible. ❧ 18 ❧

Summer’s on the way. Why not get your children active and taking part in outdoor activities by signing them up to a WRU Rugby Stars training camp?
STARS ARE BORN Each camp sees your child take part in three action packed days of fun which engage each player’s skill development in a number of different ways. As one of the leading organisations in world rugby, the Welsh Rugby Union maintains fantastic links to each of our professional regional teams and access to the top players and the very best coaching staff. This expertise and knowledge delivers high quality, fun development opportunities for young people of all ages and abilities. No better is this demonstrated than through the Rugby Stars scheme. Most importantly, the camps are a new and exciting way of getting children active as well as gently encouraging rugby-based development for children of different ages and abilities. “We aim to enhance and engage a child’s physical, psychological and social characteristics whilst maintaining what’s at the heart of the game at a junior level - fun.”
Every session is enjoyable and interactive, with WRU coaches ensuring participants practice and develop skills such as running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching, scoring a try and much more. “Our intention is that every child goes away from each session with a smile on their face and new friends for the future.” Skills development aside, children who sign up to a Rugby Stars camp also get the chance to meet one of their heroes as a Welsh international player attends one day of each and every course.
In the recent Easter half term, Wales’ try scoring hero Alex Cuthbert and Sam Warburton were just two of the players who attended the camps, participants getting the chance to meet and train with some of the most well-known faces in the game. At each camp, there is also a question and answer session with the international player and autograph and photo opportunities for the children taking part.
“My coach was great fun and we played lots of good matches. The best bit was when I met Lloyd Williams and he gave me my rugby ball.”
Join the thousands of children who have already taken part and book your place on a three day Rugby Stars camp or a weekly course. Visit www.wrurugbystars.co.uk for more details.

Janey turns a house into a home Many people think, that hiring an interior designer will be too expensive, or that they’d lose control. This is not the case, as we talk to Janey Evers. What services can you provide? I create contemporary and traditional interiors, though I do like mixing the two which works very well. I always work with the client’s taste, maybe using existing pieces of furniture and creating a fresh look with soft furnishings or starting from a blank canvas to create a sensational new environment.
I am equally happy to design just one room in your home or work on large commercial projects such as hotels. What does the process involve? There is an initial no-obligation visit to the clients’ premises, which is free of charge (within a 10 mile radius of Tenby, Pembrokeshire), to discuss the clients’ needs, size of project and to answer any questions they might have. I then create sample mood boards and room layouts to include colour schemes, fabrics, walling and flooring, best window treatment and lighting. Once agreed, I can source all of the above and arrange all bespoke soft furnishings and upholstery, all beautifully executed.
If it is just curtains or blinds you require I can visit bringing fabric books, measure and provide an estimate for making and fitting. Clients may have their own fabric which they would like to use for which a making cost can be quoted. If a client is selling a property, can you help there too? Yes, I can help stage a property in order to maximise the selling price. I can offer advice on staging a property or show houses for new building developments and full design packages to help fit out buy-to-let properties for maximum return. THE LAST WORD This issue West Life chats to Roz Moreton, proud owner of the dog-friendly Saith Gallery in Burry Port about her passion for promoting the talent of the local creative community in Carmarthenshire. When was the gallery established? Saith Gallery was established in May 2012. Our dog-friendly gallery is in an old bank building in the centre of Burry Port. Describe your offering We offer art, hand-crafted, handmade and re-discovered objects in a relaxed atmospheric gallery. We strive to spotlight traditional crafts and contemporary art that have been created in the area and beyond. We want everyone to feel inspired following their visit; to feel they are purchasing more than just a gift; that they are buying into, and continuing a traditional legacy of investing in antiques of the future. It’s about inspiring artists and encouraging customer participation in the arts. We offer advice and a service where we take art into a client’s home to ensure the piece will complement the home as imagined. Surrounded by all these wonderful works of art you can also enjoy a tea or coffee and a slice of homemade cake by the Vintage Tea Company. We offer weekly drop-in workshop classes where people can gain new skills and learn new techniques, regardless of their creative experience. We also provide children’s workshops, meditation classes, community meetings and craft mentoring workshops. Why did you open the gallery in Burry Port? I grew up in Burry Port, moved away with my family and returned five years ago. I’ve met so many inspiring people on my travels and living in London for twenty years as a designer, I felt I had so much to offer and wanted to bring something back to the place I love.
“It’s about inspiring artists and encouraging customer participation in the arts.”
What kind of artist do you exhibit? We represent over 120 artists and crafts people who bring such a breadth of creations to our gallery. We have renowned artists such as Gareth Thomas, Prudence Walters, Denise Di Battista and John Wynne Hopkins and emerging artists Tim Swain and Nigel Cox as well as internationally exhibited photographer Melanie Ezra. We exhibit beautiful crafts by Jo Miller who creates her work from vintage Welsh cloth, also Jen Peel, Bev Halstead and Eileen Newell’s cushions. What events have you organised? The International Art competition in mid-May, the Dorothy Morris Art show on 7th June and Art at Home - Art Tour which coincides with the Burry Port Festival on 13th and 14th July - more information can be found on our website. What does the gallery bring to Burry Port? The gallery is really about everyone; customers, artists and visitors, all being part of the gallery and each adding something to the gallery. It’s about people gaining a unique experience when they are here; they can meet Basil my rescue Lurcher and frequently meet the artists behind the art. ❧ 26 ❧
Do you welcome volunteers to the gallery?
