WELCOME

Welcome to the winter edition of Wye Life magazine - as usual you’ll find a host of quality independent businesses who really deserve your custom. We’re a little slimmer than usual but we’ll be bouncing back soon enough. As many of you will know, I have struggled with painful hip for the last eighteen months. I finally had an operation in November which meant that I couldn’t get around and see as many of you as I’d have liked. Over Christmas, I made the very difficult decision to leave the magazine I have helped establish with the excellent Good Life team. The hip had taken its toll and I really feel I need a less stressful life for a while.

One of the most satisfying things I helped create was the Photo Corner on Facebook. This has been a tremendous success and we now have over 3,000 members showcasing both amateur and professional photography of this beautiful region. I have loved working with you all and meeting readers so I can’t say leaving is easy to do but I wish all of you the very best and I’m sure our paths will cross again. Kind regards, Christopher Howell

This contemporary work-space enables them to create the designs from the conception of ideas to the finished piece and also to interact with the customers. There are many jewellery services available from the studio, including hand-making Wedding and Engagement rings and also the popular ‘Bespoke’ service, where they design and create a piece especially for you. EVERY MOMENT M ATTERS Talented photographer and videographer Ben Armstrong is quickly making a name for himself in the industry. Capturing the emotion of events, businesses and people, Ben believes that video is a marketing tool that every business can’t afford to ignore. Gower Life chatted to Ben to find out more about his passion for the moving image. How long have you been interested in photography and videography? I have been interested in film and photography most of my life. As a youngster, I use to watch a lot of films and wish I could one day make something that people could watch that would either make them laugh or smile. It’s all about the emotion. What do you enjoy most about your work? I really enjoy capturing moments that make people smile or refresh their memory from a time in their life. That’s where my passion lies - being able to meet lots of new people on my journey is an added bonus. What do you think makes your work stand out above others? When I’m working with businesses, I aim to put them at ease so the essence of the business shines through. I think when you watch one of my videos there is a certain style or energy to my work.

It means a lot to me to capture a venue or event correctly so that it ends up either being a wonderful memory for someone, or a superb marketing tool. I like to work closely with the customer to capture their hard work in a fun and energetic way. What does a video cost? The budget starts with time taken filming - then I put the clips together. This is called the editing process. From there I add the music that sometimes needs to be licensed depending on what the client wants. Event coverage with music ranges from £395.00 - £1,500 depending on the length of the shoot, music and editing time. What about weddings? Weddings are usually a full day of filming, with lots of footage to go through. Sometimes I’ll have two people filming (one with the girls and one with the boys). Given the nature of this ‘once in a lifetime’ occasion, we tend to spend more time capturing as many precious moments as possible, so this is reflected in the price. 8

Prices start at £1,500 depending on length of film. I’ve also been asked to travel abroad to cover weddings which I’m happy to do. What type of clients do you work for? I have been very lucky in my career as a videographer to be asked to work for magazines, holiday companies, charities and corporate events such as The Brogue Trader and Maserati. I recently covered Penarth Fashion Week and really enjoyed working with the RNLI on the project.

Welsh Rugby Legend Shane Williams on a recent visit to St John’s

SPORTING EXCELLENCE Shane visited the school recently much to the excitement of the children.

AT ST JOHN’S ON-THE-HILL SCHOOL CHEPSTOW The popularity of modern technology can result in children leading inactive lifestyles. Participating in sport and physical activities can have a multitude of benefits for children. Sport is not only important for children’s physical and mental well-being but taking part in sport helps their selfesteem, builds friendships and encourages a lifelong love of sport. The first thing children need is an excellent team of sports teachers who inspire and develop children, providing them with the necessary skills. The sports teachers at St John’s on-theHill are first class. They not only have excellent sports-centred degrees but also have wonderful backgrounds in sporting expertise in Rugby, Cricket, Netball, Hockey, Swimming and other sports. Meet the team: Jason Dobbie - Head of Boys’ Games Captain of Chepstow Cricket Club Lisa Duncan - Head of Girls’ Games Captain of Lydney Hockey Club Ex-International Soccer Player 10

Elliot Cracknell - Head of Rugby Ex-Bristol and Newport Gwent Dragons Rugby Academy player Stephanie George – Sports Teacher Ex-Wales and Bath rugby player Top division netball player in the South West Clare Nicholls – Sports Teacher Former county swimmer Lydney Hockey Club player and advanced-skier The range of sports taught at St John’s is extensive and takes place four out of five days a week. Every pupil has an opportunity to represent the school with many fixtures, both home and away. Pupils have recently been selected to represent Wales in cricket and hockey. The St John’s Colts team were national hockey finalists for the first time last year. The introduction of full-time girls’ cricket has been a great success with the team reaching the indoor County Cricket finals. The POP lacrosse team travelled to the UK finals in Sheffield in June.

Seven of St John’s athletes won places in the nationals in July. A bronze medal was triumphantly brought back to school following the National Prep Schools athletic competition. The U9, U10 and U11 rugby A teams are unbeaten after a total of thirty-six games which is a remarkable record. This rugby excellence was enhanced by a visit from the legendary Shane Williams MBE, Wales’ most capped winger and British & Irish Lions player. Shane visited the school recently much to the excitement of the children. He gave an inspirational talk about his career and the courage it takes to follow your dream. Shane, who was very impressed by the standard of rugby at the school, then ran “once-in-a-lifetime” coaching sessions with the children to further develop their rugby skills.

A few of the manufacturing processes at the Valley Mill factory

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

VALLEY

Valley Mill have been manufacturing and supplying 100% Welsh made products for a decade now and it doesn’t look like they are going to be slowing down anytime soon.

Their journey began with director and creator Kevin Thomas in 2007, after purchasing a laser engraving machine and utilising two bedrooms at home as a workshop. The one-man band started attending markets and shows on the weekend; selling handmade laser engraved Welsh slate products, whilst still working as a full time manufacturing engineer. After committing to the business full time in 2009 the next step was to build two sheds in his garden to house the business.

In 2012, due to a surge in business brought on by supplying retail stores throughout the UK, Valley Mill moved into a commercial property in Crynant. This gave them the room and opportunity to expand their manufacturing processes, resulting in the creation of their range of Soy wax candles & handmade natural soaps.

Due to the success of supplying other stores, the natural progression was for them to open their own high street store in Neath. Two years later the momentum continued, and with the help of local investment funding, were able to purchase better machinery and take over the unit next door in Crynant. This has expanded their workshop to an impressive 300 square metres in total, which houses 3 high powered laser engraving machines, a 7Kw sandblast engraver and a 2 meter bridge cutter. In 2016 they made the brave decision to move their high street store from Neath, to a much larger store in the heart of Swansea. Valley Mill now hand make a wide range of Welsh slate products; from coasters and placemats, to clocks and memo boards - all of which can be personalised in-store whilst you wait. With the help of one of their friendly sales assistants, you can also design your own house signs, memorials, trophies and awards; all of which are handcrafted to order in the Crynant workshop.

MILL

As well as their Swansea store and online, you can find Valley Mill’s products in over 140 stores throughout the UK.

Alongside their large range of Welsh slate home and giftware, you can find a variety of products from other likeminded Welsh companies; such as Melin Tregwynt, Tweedmill, Welsh Lavender and many more. All of these products, which are also handmade in Wales, include Welsh woollen blankets, scarves & cushions, handmade ceramics, natural beauty products, jewellery and much more. All products are hand picked to compliment Valley Mill’s own ranges. Valley Mill is proud to support other independent Welsh businesses, and stock some of the best products that Wales has to offer. Having supplied products to some of the most demanding and influential people in the world, such as Barack Obama, David Cameron and even the Queen, Valley Mill has the confidence and drive to keep putting Wales on the map.

“I believe in these uncertain times it is important to support Welsh companies, which is why the whole ethos of Valley Mill is to only sell products that are actually made in Wales.” Check out everything Valley Mill have to offer by visiting the website or for a more immersive experience pop to the store…

If you are a lover of great tasting food, then just outside the historic town of Caerleon you’ll find the place of your dreams!

Food Heaven

The Gate, Llanfrechfa, is under new management and has evolved into a high-quality steak and seafood restaurant. They have perfected the technique of dry ageing. The process begins with large cuts of beef being hung in special climate-controlled coolers. They are kept inside these fridges for a prolonged period. During this time, the meat will lose a small percentage of its moisture. This supports the steak in developing its signature flavour. It will become gorgeously tender, and the taste will become even more concentrated and saturated until you are left with ultimate and delicious perfection! In addition, all steaks are grilled on ‘The Josper’, a unique charcoal grill, adding to the delightful taste experience. There are many pleasures in life, but none are as genuine as the perfect steak, Not only does The Gate have the best cuisine for miles, but they are also the most competitively priced restaurant, offering high-quality food at honest prices.

The Gate’s owner, Gareth Lee, believes that good food should be accessible to all. For lovers of fish, The Gate has regular seasonal choices depending on availability such as Swordfish, Seabass, Dover Sole, Monkfish and Hake. The evening menu has plenty entrées that guarantee to excite. One dish that caught our eye, in particular, is the Wagyu Sirloin. Described as “The Rolls Royce of steaks”. This is Japan’s super bred beef, and it earns its place as undisputed steak royalty. Wagyu is extremely exclusive, and it is not just the guests who are excited to see it on the menu. Chef ’s alike are desperate to add it to their own! There is a tasty selection of meals included in the incredible £9.95 lunch deal. You can enjoy a beautiful main and starter for a fantastic price, what’s not to love?

“One dish that caught our eye, in particular, is the Wagyu Sirloin.” 14

We’re sure there will be something to send your taste buds to savoury heaven, but don’t just take our word for it and read the testimonial below. “Decor is beautiful, and staff were very friendly and welcoming. My wife and I had the Sunday lunch. We both had cream of mushroom soup to start which was lovely and very tasty. Following that, we had the beef dinner for main, and again everything had lots of flavour. My favourite part of the meal was the beef. Cooked beautifully - it was so tender and flavorful, best I have ever had. Wanted to try a dessert but was too full on this visit but will for sure next time. Would highly recommend.” Christopher Watkins The Gate, Llanfrechfa Caerleon Road Llanfrechfa, Near Carleon NP44 8DQ 01633 861822 www.thegatellanfrechfa.com Like and follow on Facebook @GateLlanfrechfa

Head chef Ross Williams shares the recipe for a delicious banana, dark rum and chocolate cheesecake, one of the Kilpeck Inn’s most popular desserts and a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

BANANA, DARK RUM & CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE Ingredients n ¾ packet of chocolate digestives, crushed to crumbs n 125g melted butter n ½ tin dulce de leche (or condensed milk, boiled in the tin until caramelised) n 3 bananas n 100g soft dark brown sugar n 25ml dark rum n 300g melted white chocolate n 300g soft cream cheese n 100g icing sugar, sifted n 3 gelatine sheets, soaked in cold water n 284ml double cream Method 1. Line a 12 inch cake tin with baking parchment (a springform tin will be easiest) 2. Mix the biscuit crumbs with the melted butter and push down into the bottom of the tin with the back of a spoon to make the base. Put in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm up

3. In a food processor, blitz the bananas, rum and brown sugar to a puree 4. Melt the white chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Once melted, mix in the cream cheese and then the icing sugar 5. Gently bring the double cream to the boil then add the soaked gelatine leaves and allow to dissolve completely 6. Put the dulce de leche in a bowl then add two thirds of the double cream and gelatine mix and whisk until smooth. Add the remaining cream to the white chocolate mix and whisk 7. Add the banana puree to the condensed milk. Using a ladle, layer the banana mix and the white chocolate mix in the cake tin, one ladle at a time 8. Place in the fridge and allow to set overnight 21

HEREFORDSHIRE OAK Hereford is famous for many things - one being the county’s wealth of oak trees. Heart of Oak is an artisan joinery business, fusing high-quality wood with expert design and craft to create spectacular furnishings.

Heart Of Oak offers traditional, hand-made, bespoke joinery and carpentry services. Oliver Price set up Heart Of Oak in 2002 along with his wife, Camilla. They believe that family-run businesses offer a more personal touch that you don’t benefit from with large chains. Although they provide a more personal experience, they are dedicated and professional in all aspects, to ensure complete customer satisfaction. Oliver’s passion and enthusiasm for working with wood drove him to achieve his City and Guilds qualifications, and he perfected his craft working for a local company. His work has been featured on prestigious projects at Powys Castle, Aberglasney Gardens, Hereford Cathedral, Berrington Hall and Llowes Court to name just a few. Working on elegant properties such as these aided him in gaining a wealth of knowledge, and experience. The quality of his work had reached an exceptional standard and was receiving merit far and wide.

Oliver transcended his skills into his own business and had been achieving great success since. Oliver has an eye for detail and an abundance of passion and enthusiasm. All projects are treated with utmost precedence. He intertwines traditional methods alongside modern approaches to produce a final product which is not only beautiful but can also withstand the tests of time. The products used in creating your work of art are of the highest quality. All timber is sourced locally and bound with quality ironmongery products. They also use natural finishes such as tongue oils and earth-based breathable paints. Oliver makes his own hand-made, hand cleft, oak pegs for many of his timber frames and hand planes a vast majority of the oak used. He favours specialised timber framing tools, such as mortise chisels, spokeshaves and draw knives, giving an authentic finish to the final product. 24

They also offer a full build and project management service, inclusive of sourcing all associated and trusted trades, thus ensuring you a high end, professional, and stress-free service. Alongside timber framing they also possess a great depth of knowledge in conservation repairs, specialising in listed and historic buildings. Heart Of Oak undertakes many projects from sash windows to ornate bridges. Give them a call to see what they can do for you!

In January 2018, Katherine Vargas, Licenced Conveyancer, joined Hopkins Law in Chepstow, already firmly established in Cardiff and Cowbridge. The Chepstow Office opened in 2017 and is going from strength to strength.

PLAN FOR TOMORROW, TODAY! Wye Life spoke to Ali Brown, Sales & marketing Consultant at Hopkins Law, Chepstow, to find out more. Katherine, based full time in Chepstow, lives locally, and brings with her a wealth of experience. Having spent several years traveling and living abroad, including America and Bahrain, Katherine enjoys an enviable reputation within the industry as a highly professional, responsible and conscientious individual. Her abilities demonstrate the highest level of conveyancing experience including freehold/leasehold sales and purchases, transfers of equity, buy-tolets, first-time buyers, new builds, and those looking to re-mortgage. Katherine is a highly trained, experienced and personable professional and we are delighted that she has chosen to join Hopkins Law in Chepstow. Chepstow is a location we have been interested in for some time. With the property boom in Bristol, more people are looking to move to the Welsh side of the Bridge and can see sense in the short commute - particularly given the Severn Bridge Tolls are being abolished. Estate agents are telling us that about 80% of home buyers in the area are coming from the South West. As a result, property prices have been rising quicker than the Welsh average, as Bristol commuters seek new homes. This is born out by the experiences of our Chepstow clients who in some instances have received multiple offers on their properties in a short time after marketing. Our Chepstow Office also boasts Lynn Wheeldon, who is a consultant at Hopkins Law Ltd specialising in Probate and Estate Administration, Will Writing, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection work.

“Her abilities demonstrate the highest level of conveyancing experience.”

Lynn qualified in 1994, having studied law at Cardiff University followed by Chester Law College. She has built up an enviable back-catalogue of experience in her field of practice. Lynn has acted as an adviser to the Court in the Respiratory Disease class action litigation relating to Probate Law and also negotiated terms with HM Revenue & Customs in similar class action litigations. Also, she has also embarked on a prestigious role previously undertaken by the Official Solicitor representing estates of deceased borrowers in possession proceedings by mortgage companies. Lynn’s wealth of experience enables her to deal with challenging land titles involving trusts and complex estates and advises both private individuals and companies on such title matters. Lynn has also been sought out and required to act as mentor and advisor to will writing teams and served for registered charities in the retirement and appointment of new Trustees. 26

Do you need advice? If you are thinking about buying or selling a property, making a will or setting up Power of Attorney. Or need assistance with probate, intestacies or estate planning - then please contact our Chepstow Office where we offer a whole range of legal services, including family matters and equity release in a professional and friendly manner. We have a wealth of experienced, personable Professionals who work closely with clients providing practical and pro-active advice at all stages of their lives. “Lookout for the competition on our Facebook page for a chance to win a free tour and a midweek stay at the award winning Pwllgwilyn Holiday Cottages”

WELSH OVERLAND SAFARI What recent tours/walks have you created since we last featured you? We have had a very busy Spring & Summer with visitors coming from far and wide. We still have our set list of 8 tours. However because we have the flexibility to cater to individual groups needs we have visited some new areas. For instance we had a couple enquire about a tour, they had some difficulties and wanted to see the sea! We were able to plan a tour to the Elan Valley, Llanidoes, Machynlleth and to Aberdyfi via The Wynford Vaughen-Thomas monument to enjoy the views of Snowdonia for lunch and then a stop in Aberystwyth for an ice cream before heading back! With Autumn & Winter upon us, what tours/walks can you offer? Autumn and winter both offer visitors the opportunity the see Mid Wales & The Brecon Beacons in a whole new light.

In Autumn you see the changing of the colours of the landscapes, with red and gold colours on the trees (and the fall). Then in the winter your likely to see the snow capped peaks of the Brecon Beacons which makes for fabulous photograph opportunities. What is your favourite winter tour? There are so many to choose from; The Elan Valley estate, near Rhayader which can look stunning in the winter months, but I would have to say a trip to waterfall country would be a favourite. If it’s a clear day you get to witness the waterfalls with frozen icecaps all around you and because its out of season you will find its a lot quieter than in the summer months and you get a more personal experience. 32

What plans have you for the future? We just hope to keep our standards high across both businesses and deliver excellent customer service! We have recently upgraded our website which is exciting and I have recently become a Brecon Beacons National Park Dark Skies ambassador; so a dark skies tour would be something we’ve been asked about and would love to develop over time!

“Llamas are fabulous animals and an absolute delight to be around.” This is what Lisa Fox, owner of Briery Hill Llamas and Director on the board of the British Llama Society, told us when Wye Life popped in to visit Lisa and her furry friends.

BRIERY HILL L LAMAS

Llamas are such gentle souls and it is no surprise that their relaxing and tranquil nature is the reason that they are often used as therapy animals. At Briery Hill Llamas we currently have a group of ten Tampuli and Lanuda Llamas, which will be increasing to fourteen with the arrival of our yearlings in April; these new editions will include Rossi, a fabulous and majestic llama, and Killian, a rare breed Suri llama. Briery Hill Llamas is a unique day out where we offer a bespoke service catered towards our guests. The setting that surrounded the Briery Hill Llama farm is an idyllic 32 acres of grass-land, woodland, and private lake with views to the Malvern Hills in the distance. We do not open to the public and therefore, when you book your Llama Experience, you will not be sharing it with anyone else. This way you will truly get to have a one-to-one experience with these remarkable animals. A Llama Experience is approximately 90 minutes and prices start from £35 per person depending on the package you decide to choose.

That’s not all. We have been awarded a five star food hygiene rating from the Forest of Dean Council. You can enjoy a range of afternoon teas, which can be catered to most dietary requirements, as well as some delicious cakes, all made fresh at the farm. Our experience packages are all tailored for the individuals. Just some of the packages that we are include: Say it with Llamas Package Includes a llama experience, afternoon tea, prosecco, roses, and chocolates. Hen Parties and Corporate outings package Offering a half or full day experience with food and prosecco, or champagne if required. Llama Farmer Break In addition to our standard Llama experience this ‘Ultimate’ package includes a 3 night stay in our Luxury holiday cottage for two; excellent for any animal lover! Malmo Hearing is a multi-award-winning family run business based in Newport and Bridgend. Mal and Mo started the business in 2007. Since then, they have expanded and now have two high street shops and several clinics throughout south Wales.

M ALMO HEARING

SUPPORTS HEARING MISSION IN ARMENIA

Malmo offer free hearing aid assessments and demonstrations, the latest 21st century bespoke hearing aids, a full range of hearing aid accessories and assistive devices, microsuction ear wax removal, tinnitus advice and custom-made hearing protection. They also provide medical legal assessments for noise induced hearing loss claims. Jakub Wiatr, 20, is the office manager and hearing aid technician based in their Bridgend branch. He has been working with Malmo Hearing for six years. “I started with Malmo on work experience as part of my Business & Administration course. Since then, I have attended numerous training courses associated with the hearing profession and in January I will be starting my own journey towards becoming a fully qualified and registered hearing aid audiologist. At Malmo Hearing, we don’t sell hearing aids, we sell better hearing.

Malmo work closely with Starkey Laboratories, an international hearing aid manufacturer with a UK base in Stockport, Cheshire. Starkey also founded the Starkey Hearing Foundation in 1984. The foundation is run by the founder and chairman of Starkey, William F Austin. The purpose of this foundation is to provide the gift of hearing to those in need ‘so the world may hear’, because “Alone we can’t do much. Together we can change the world.”

The latest foundation mission was in Armenia in October 2017. It was the 107th country to have been supported by the foundation. This mission helped over 1,800 people to be fitted with hearing aids donated worldwide to the foundation. Jakub says, “When Malmo Hearing was invited to attend, it was a great honour as we were one of only ten UK based audiologists asked to be a part of the UK’s first foundation mission. As the owner and lead audiologist, I thought Mal would represent Malmo in the best way possible, but he decided to give me the opportunity to represent Malmo instead. I was nervous, but excited, I knew the purpose of this mission was to help people, which is my passion, and what I do every day.”

“Malmo Hearing, local hearing care for local people. Better Hearing Today, Better Hearing Tomorrow.”

“The mission, I attended, was for the fitting of the hearing aids donated worldwide. This was carried out in the capital city, Yerevan, over 3 days. I experienced so much praise and I saw so many smiles which was just amazing and so rewarding.

We focus on each individual and listen to their experience of hearing loss as everybody’s story is different,” says Jakub. “Helping people is our passion and it’s truly amazing to see how we transform lives of so many who have been struggling with hearing loss.”

38

Jakub giving the ‘gift of hearing’ to Armenia

We fitted hearing aids to around 1,800 Armenians from all over the country and they were all so grateful for all the work we had done. They hugged and kissed us as these people were finally able to hear and enjoy life without the struggle that is associated with hearing loss. With the help of volunteers from local schools to translate, we were able to communicate with the patients and help so many of them. “This is not the end of the mission yet as some of us will go back to Yerevan in few months’ time for phase three which will focus on making sure people are coping with their hearing aids and make any adjustments needed.” Jakub added, “If you would like to donate your old hearing aids to the Starkey Hearing Foundation, you can take them to Malmo Hearing and they will send them to the foundation. It doesn’t matter how old or damaged they are, they can still be used.”

Technology is changing fast in the medical world, especially in the MRI scanning sector.

EUROPEAN

The European Scanning Centre looks more like a boutique hotel than a medical centre. We met with manager Melanie to find out more.

He has a large clinical practice which has given him considerable insight into the needs of referring clinicians ensuring the ESC delivers a first class imaging service.

Please tell us about the facility... The facility in Cardiff comprises of a new Open and Upright MRI Scanner, the only one of its type in Wales. n The scanner is completely open above and to the front and rear, thereby avoiding claustrophobia. n Patients can be scanned in their position of pain whether it is sitting, standing, bending or lying down. n Extra wide space ensures larger patients feel comfortable and relaxed during the scan.

Please tell us about the ESC team... Melanie is Centre Manager along with two Radiographers (Carol-Ann and Ria). The Reception staff are Lisa and Nicola.

How long has the European Scanning Centre been in operation? Since 2003. The ESC has developed a reputation for providing a high quality and professional imaging service. Dr Paul Jenkins MA MD FRCP is the Medical Director of European Scanning Centre and also a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist. He graduated from Cambridge University and The Royal London Hospital before undertaking specialist training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

The Radiographers have many years experience of working in MRI scanners across South Wales - both in the NHS and private sector. Melanie previously worked in the Open MRI scanner, which was in the same premises as European Scanning Centre, for over fifteen years. Tell us about the ambience and interior décor of the centre... The Centre has been carefully designed with patient comfort at the forefront with a warm and welcoming reception area and staff who have been specially chosen for their ability to put patients at ease. We have invested in a five star environment where the emphasis is on patient comfort & relaxation. Whilst being scanned, patients are able to watch television, listen to the radio or are welcome to bring in their music of choice. 40

Two way audio facilities allow our radiographers to communicate and reassure patients during their scan and the viewing window ensures that both the patient and the radiographer are always in the line of vision.

How does the scanner work? The scanner is a large super conducting magnet - it is the only superconductive MRI scanner that enables fully open and upright imaging of the spine and joints, allowing patients to be scanned in a non claustrophobic and full weight bearing position. Imaging in the sitting or standing position can provide a more accurate diagnosis thus improving overall patient outcome. It is a more patient friendly scanner than the usual tunnel scanners - so more suited to patients who are anxious, claustrophobic or are unable to lie down. How much does the scanner cost? The refurbishment of the centre and new scanner has cost almost £2m. It’s a considerable investment but worth every penny as the benefits to patients’ wellbeing are well worth it.

SCANNING CENTRE Why do patients choose the scanner? The scanner is U shaped so is open above the patient unlike closed MRI scanners thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.

How long does the scan take? Each part we scan takes approx thirty minutes but we allow more time for the appointment so that patients can get comfortable in the scan room.

Do I need a doctor’s referral? Ideally it is better to be referred for a scan by your GP, a consultant, physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath. However we do accept self referrals for certain scans.

Where do your patients come from? The majority of our patients come from all over Wales and the West Country as there are very few of these scanners in operation. But we have also scanned patients from overseas including Ireland and the Middle East.

How quickly are results generated? We aim to get the results back to the referrer within forty-eight hours. How many patients can you see? It depends on the part of the body and how many areas we need to examine. We tailor appointments to suit the needs of the patient as some patients have specific mobility issues or other needs that need extra time. We don’t want to rush our patients as many need more time for the examination than the standard closed MRI scanner due to claustrophobia or mobility issues.

How do your fees compare? The ESC is recognised by all the major insurers. We aim to be as competitive as possible in our pricing and do not seek to charge a premium for the specialist services we offer. The self pay cost depends on the number of areas being scanned - however our prices are competitive to other open MRI scanners. We don’t profess to be a provider of “conveyor belt scanning” as we tailor our service to provide the extra time and support for patients to be able complete their scan.

“The scanner is U shaped so is open above... thereby avoiding any sense of claustrophobia.” 41

Lewis Ballard Accountants are certainly not your average accountants. As Neil Ballard explains, “Accounts are just one small piece of the jigsaw.” Too many business owners put all their money and all their time into their business, often risking everything, taking no holidays and still ending up with nothing to show for it when they retire. Neil tells us all about how to achieve the…

WORK LIFE BALANCE

Neil and Janet Ballard

We work hard to make sure this doesn’t happen to our clients We look at the whole picture. Focusing on them personally, as well as their business. We make sure they get the success their hard work deserves, with time to enjoy it now, and the security of a comfortable future as well. To achieve this, we work with a variety of other top professionals, such as specialist Independent Financial Advisors, Bank Managers and Solicitors. However, although we encourage clients to take more time out to recharge their batteries, we realise this is an area where we can still do more. So, we invested in our own travel franchise which we aptly call Time for Life!’

Through our parent company, Not Just Travel, we now have access to over 500 suppliers and literally thousands of holidays. So now, when clients need a break, we can actually book it for them too! In every area, we always ensure our clients get the best by selecting the best companies to work with and our travel company’s no different. So, we are delighted to issue this really exciting press release about it; Olympic Hero Pledges Support to Time for Life with Not Just Travel as they strive for gold success.

“ I am delighted that Daley Thompson has joined our team.” 42

We, at Not Just Travel and based in Cardiff, are proud to announce that Olympic Gold Medalist, Daley Thompson, is our new “brand ambassador” and public face of our company. Time for Life has been a franchisee of Not Just Travel for six months, and it’s because of their indisputable support that we have grown, strength upon strength, in our business. They have provided us with the knowledge and support to grow our travel business. Whilst we work independently, we also share in the successes and brand strength of Not Just Travel which we can now excitingly say introduces Daley Thompson to our team as the new brand ambassador.

Janet, Daley Thompson and Neil

“It is an absolute pleasure to be working with the whole team within Not Just Travel, they have such a passion for the work that they do. Talking personally with Time for Life, within the franchise I discovered the real people behind the business and how hard they work to bring the best for their clients. There is such vision, passion, dedication and inspiration.” said Daley.

I am sure he will help us strive for even more future success, with his entrepreneurial, mentoring and coaching skills there is no better person to help us deliver even better results and of course the perfect holiday options for our customers.”

Neil Ballard of Time for Life, says, “I am delighted that Daley Thompson has joined our team. He is an invaluable addition to our company and, of course, a hero of mine.

It’s been another incredible year for Alexander James of Swansea. As the company’s reputation has been growing, primarily, from its many happy customers. Mr and Mrs Lewis of Cowbridge are one of these and are now fully ensconced in their stunning new home. “Our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape.” “Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation.”

enjoy working with people who are passionate about their business or service. We’ve built up a varied client base and with that an exciting portfolio. From recruitment agencies and local hairdressers to physiotherapy clinics and even a local builder - we’re really trying to reach out into as many sectors as possible. It’s really about people - if we like you, we’ll work with you.

Why is the company called Cog? There’s a few of us involved in the business and when we were deciding about branding, we had a brainstorm about the company name. We batted a few names around and we whittled it down to three possible options. We each then drew a possible logo to go with the names and Cog eventually came out on top. That’s also how we came up with the logo. It’s simple, we’re part of the machine - the client’s machine. We work better together. Describe what you do/offer… We’re a full service digital design agency. We try to offer businesses, or individuals, the complete package when it comes to any branding, web design or social media. It can become quite a mess when you’ve got one company doing one job and another doing something else. We keep everything in-house and that really helps us promote a brand in a coordinated and coherent way. Are you formally trained? My background is website development and there’s no formal qualification for that. Anybody can get into developing websites, you just need to be a little bit crazy because there’s a lot of code involved! Our Creative Director has over 30 years of experience working at some of the world’s best design and advertising agencies. We know what we’re doing. We’re no mugs.

be a lot more work involved when developing an eCommerce website but the companies who we have worked with so far have had fresh ideas about how to market their products and that’s really satisfying. Describe your approach to business? Just be open and honest. Whether it’s when you’re having a quick chat with someone you’re working with or giving a presentation to a potential new client. We’ve found the types of clients who we enjoy working with are those who are open and honest too and that helps us build trust with them. I think we have the right approach – people seem to like it. What mistakes do people/businesses commonly make with their websites? We’ve seen websites where the company hasn’t put any of their contact information, where links for news articles are broken and text that’s so small it can’t read. The worst website mistake a business can make is not having a responsive site that’s compatible on all mobile devices. With 1.2 billion people across the world accessing the web through their phones, it’s a no brainer for a website to be mobile and tablet friendly.

Why would a business come to you? We’re always open and honest about the whole process. No design speak, no fluff, no nonsense – we believe our approach is a refreshing change to the ‘usual’.

What other services do you offer? We predominately offer branding, graphics and website creation. We also offer SEO (search engine optimisation) and content management for websites and social media. We’re also branching out into app development, with the way people are using mobile technology, it only seems right for businesses to offer a mobile application.

Do you offer eCommerce? Yes certainly! With businesses looking to offer their services through the web with minimal fuss and online stores popping up ten to the dozen, it would be silly for us not to! There tends to

Are you busy? What kinds of businesses are you working with? Cog started properly at the beginning of this year and we’re getting busier. We’re always looking to take on exciting new projects and really 47

Are you expensive? Good branding or a great website doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have clients who have literally junked their old websites after talking to us. Why spend money trying to fix something that’s so awful when, for a third of the cost, you can have a brand new one? What advice would you give to anyone starting out in business? Try to get as much help as possible from those who have experienced starting their own business. Are you happy working for yourself? What do you like about it? Yes, definitely! There’s something extremely satisfying about running your business. It’s not for everyone. You have to be driven. Waking up every morning knowing that you are your own boss is pretty cool. What have you learned so far in business? When running your own business always take time to work ‘on’ it and not just ‘in’ it. Sum yourself up in three words… Honest. Determined. Jokester.

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.
