WELCOME

Following the introduction of both Herefordshire and Monmouthshire features, this winter issue sees a brandnew feature, The Jewels of South Powys, in which we have personally selected several independent local gems for your pleasure. Speaking of gems, we are also focusing on the very quaint village of Bwlch. Now that spring is looming, our feature on ‘Walking the Brecon Beacons’ will hopefully inspire you to put on those walking boots, get fit and enjoy the beautiful landscape that is the Beacons National Park. I had the pleasure of interviewing founder of the group, Dai Powell, which you can read all about on pages 34 and 35. We are also introducing another new feature focusing on where to stay which will present our favourite guest houses, B&Bs and hotels. No doubt this feature will evolve and become a showcase for other venues.I also had the great pleasure of interviewing Jemima Parry-Jones MBE of ICBP (The International Centre for the Birds of Prey) and gained a fascinating insight into this popular tourist attraction. 2017 sees their 50th Anniversary. The nearest town of Newent is also featured giving readers ideas of what to do when you’re visiting this excellent attraction. Look out for our behind the scenes feature on Hereford Cathedral Chamber Choir and learn about how you could join on pages 48 and 49.

Last, and by no means least, we are delighted to announce the engagement of Sam Nicholls (Hotel Manager) and Amy Homewood (Events and Wedding Co-Ordinator of the gorgeous Glewstone Court Country House Hotel. Find out how Sam proposed in their feature on pages 46 and 47. Happy reading and see you again in the spring! Topstak, Monmouth is certainly fired up after a major expansion and refurbishment plan. We chat with Matthew Young, Showroom Manager to find out more.

TOPSTAK You must be excited by the expansion. Can you describe your role at Topstak? As the branch manager I am really pleased to see this which means we can display a far wider selection of products. In addition to managing the branch, my main role is making sure customers are given the best possible service and advice. I also carry out site visits to homes to ensure they will be purchasing the best products to suit their situation. How long have you worked for Topstak? After leaving university I joined Topstak as part of the busy sales and technical team at the main Cowbridge showroom. During this time, I gained considerable hands on experience of the solid fuel and wood burning stove industry picking up various industry related qualifications along the way. I was then promoted to become the branch manager. How long has Topstak been established in the town? Topstak first came to Monmouth when they opened a shop in Monnow Street in 2011. Since then, interest in the company’s products has grown considerably and a larger showroom was required to meet demand and showcase the full range of products that we supply.

A property at the entrance to Mayhill Industrial Estate became available and after major improvements the new Topstak Monmouth showroom was unveiled in July 2014. This increased demand for all our products so we extended the showroom in the summer of 2016 to incorporate new product lines including range cookers, outdoor hot tubs and barbeques. Where do your customers come from geographically? Our customers come from all over the country as we offer such a wide choice of stoves and leading brands such as Clearview. However, most of our regular customers come from the Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire areas. We can provide an installation service for our wonderful stoves to the following areas: Monmouth, Chepstow, Calidcot, Newport, Pontypool, Cwmbran, Usk, Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Ross-onWye, Forest of Dean, Cheltenham and Gloucester. What services and products does Topstak offer? We offer a supply and installation service for all of our wood and solid fuel burning stoves, chimneys and fireplaces. 10

We also include a site survey to the customer’s property to ensure all of their needs are met and to assess the suitability for a particular installation. We supply a wide range of stove and chimney products to suit all installation options and pride ourselves on being able to provide the latest information and advice to assist our customers in making informed decisions. To meet our customers’ needs we can also provide a design service for stove and chimney installations. We supply the very best market leading stove brands such as Clearview, Chesney’s, Contura and Stuv as well as Arctic Spa hot tubs and Big Green Egg ceramic outdoor ovens and barbeques. The showroom has recently undergone a sizeable refurbishment, please tell us more about this... We are continuously adapting to meet the demands of our customers and felt the need to show a greater range of products including those focused on outdoor living. The growing demand for wood fired oven BBQs and hot tubs, led us to expand our range by including the Canadian Arctic Spas. The extension has also allowed us to create an entire

outdoor cooking section as well as increase the amount of wood burning stoves we can display. We also increased storage space for our busy trade counter selling chimney products and accessories. Over the next twelve to eighteen months we intend to further expand our range to include a designated inset stove area as well as a section devoted to displaying gas and electric stoves. Tell us about the new products that you can now offer as a result of the refurbishment. Last year, Topstak became the South Wales distributors for Arctic Spa hot tubs and Swim Spas. Thanks to the refurbishment we now have a dedicated display where we can demonstrate these high quality and easy to use spas. These Spas are engineered for the harsh Canadian temperatures from where they originate, enabling them to work really efficiently during typical British winters. Finished with Red Cedar cabinets they are an eye catching addition to any garden or home. The clever Spa Boy technology allows for automatic chemical control through a salt water sanitary system, enabling

the customer to maintain the correct water levels from the ease of a smartphone. The innovative FreeHeat insulation system allows for lower running costs and far simpler access to the many moving components inside the shell. We have also been able to expand our contemporary wood burning stoves display to include market leading brands such as Contura, Scan, Jotul and Stuv. In particular, Stuv offer a wide range of contemporary freestanding and inset fires to suit many settings and environments. Personalized cladding options are available to give Topstak customers unrivalled choice in customised fireplace design. The Stuv Micro Mega, which can be operated as either a sealed inset stove or in open fire mode, is a personal favorite and is on full working display at the Monmouth showroom. What do you think makes Topstak special? Our high standard of personal customer service and the wide choice of quality products we offer at competitive prices. We’re definitely design led and carefully select products before deciding to 11

become stockists ensuring that the best quality products giving good value for money are available to customers. We’re constantly looking to provide the latest products, and will continue to offer an unrivalled choice of high quality products for our customers to choose from. Most of our products can be viewed at our Monmouth showroom where we also have many stoves on working display. We offer a range of products to suit most styles or budget and will continue to extend our customers the warmest of welcomes.

A family business established in 1960, CHT Joinery continues to produce high quality joinery using traditional methods, specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke items including windows, doors and stairs. Wye Life chatted with Aimee and Roger Williams about why they hired CHT Joinery to work in their new home and why they felt it was a wise choice.

CHT JOINERY Aimee, we love your home here on the Llandegfedd Reservoir - it’s very picturesque. Thank you. We originally bought the farm and land, then knocked down the old farmhouse and rebuilt what is now our home. It is very tranquil here, we love it.

What made you choose CHT joinery for your own home? Once the plans were passed for our house we obtained quotes from a few different companies. CHT Joinery’s was competitive and, as their quality far outweighed the others, it wasn’t a difficult choice.

How did you hear about CHT joinery? We were project managing a house build about four years ago and CHT Joinery were making and installing the oak windows and A frames. As we have a lot of experience in house building we recognised the excellent quality of their work.

What input did you have on deciding on your beautiful three metre bi-fold doors? We sat down with Paul from CHT Joinery and together we decided on oak as opposed to aluminium for the bi-folds as it’s more in keeping with the property. Paul then created them using the measurements from the plans, and from his knowledge about the mechanisms and what would work best for the size of them.

“Paul and his team are top quality joiners.”

14

How was the whole process from start to finish? Because CHT Joinery had our plans from the start of the build, all the windows and doors were made and ready to fit before we needed them. CHT kept them at their premises and installed them as soon as we were ready, which resulted in a seamless build with no delays. When on site they were extremely quick and efficient. All the windows were fitted within two days, and the bi-folds took another two days. We recently arranged for CHT to return in order to make and install the banisters for our stairs and balconies. Again this was efficient and they were so incredibly helpful with their knowledge about specific regulations.

We have to say your windows look absolutely stunning... I totally agree. I think all the bi-folds are brilliant. I like the fact I could include a small window in the set in our bedroom that can be opened independently from the bi-folds. But they all open seamlessly and are so easy to slide open. Would you recommend CHT Joinery? Absolutely, and without hesitation. Paul and his team are top quality joiners. Their knowledge, and attention to detail, is second to none - and their after-sales service is also first class. TaylorMade by Stanton specialises in individually designed bespoke interiors - from kitchens and utilities to libraries, studies & bedrooms, including all interior joinery. From design to fitting they provide a truly tailor made service. Wye Life chats with business partners Tom Taylor and Jeremy Stanton.

TAYLORMADE BY We love your gorgeous showroom; do you need to make an appointment? Thank you. Our showroom is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm with only Saturdays requiring an appointment. What led to you setting up TaylorMade by Stanton? I (Tom Taylor) purchased Woodlands Estate in 1998 and the premises were leased to a third party. In January 2000 the tenants ceased trading so I invited my son-in-law Jeremy Stanton to have a look around the premises with the idea of starting a family bespoke furniture company as there had been joinery businesses on this site for decades. For the previous twelve years Jeremy had been working with a colleague in the Stroud area designing and manufacturing high quality bespoke joinery for clients mainly in the London area.

By May 2000 a family partnership, to be known as TaylorMade by Stanton was formed with myself and Sandy Taylor & Jeremy and Lorraine Stanton.

Do you make your kitchens on site? All of our cabinetry is built from scratch in our workshops by skilled craftsmen. As we design and build to suit any given space or shape with non-standard carcases, it is essential for it to be built in the workshop and laid out as it would be in a client’s room. This gives a client an opportunity to pop in at any stage of the build and view its progress. What sets you apart from other Kitchen companies? We are not mass producers and are personally responsible for each project from start to finish. We are great believers in quality before quantity. We are totally committed to every project; this ensures that our clients receive continuous quality advice. 16

This commitment covers all the trades that are necessary to ensure the end result will stand the test of time.

What advice can you give to our readers who may be considering changing/updating their kitchen? Take your time, don’t be rushed into making bad decisions and if you have just purchased a property try and live in it for a few months, at least until you have a feel for what you might want in your new home. Do you have any plans for the future? To continue to build on our reputation for quality and service and to be the “go to” company for interior bespoke cabinetry and joinery solutions in the area. And to continue to produce high quality furniture and probably take on a further apprentice to be trained in the skills necessary to produce the high quality products that we are renowned for.

STANTON TaylorMade by Stanton also supply the finest and most sought after appliances and worktops available; they have the largest selection of Sub-Zero and Wolf products built into their showroom kitchens anywhere in the region. Also on display are the La Cornue hand built ranges along with Mercury, Falcon and Aga Total Control. Plus they have many worktop options on show including Dupont Corian, Cosentino Silestone, Dekton and Granite. If you’re looking for attention to detail, and service second to none, we highly recommend a visit - and if you want to see the showroom on a Saturday do remember to book an appointment: 01452 831 538.

Since opening in 2013, the Shires Chiropractic Clinic has welcomed people from all over the Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire region with a patient base that is continuously expanding with each passing year in business. Always ready to welcome new patients, Melissa Folly, owner of Shires Chiropractic, will endeavour to get you seen as soon as possible, keeping your time in pain at a minimum.

SHIRES CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC After completing university in 2010 and being presented with the ‘Best New Graduate’ Award from the Royal Collage of Chiropractors, Melissa returned to her roots to set up her Chiropractic business. She had previously been working as an associate Chiropractor in South Yorkshire for three years, where she gained valuable skills and knowledge that has given her great insight into the workings of a successful Chiropractic Practice. Finding the right location was a priority for Melissa which led to her setting up shop in Symonds Yat West, with both Monmouth and Ross-onWye less than ten minutes away and in reachable distance of Hereford and the Forest of Dean, the Shires Chiropractic Clinic is perfectly located with ground floor access and onsite parking. We spoke to Melissa to find out more about Chiropractic Care and what to expect from the Shires Chiropractic. “We provide chiropractic care to the whole family. This encases all muscular, skeletal and sporting injuries, as well as a variety of problems that can arise in any area of the musculoskeletal system, with each treatment being suitable for those of all ages. We always ensure that chiropractic care is suitable for you and can deal with problems that are an hour old or those that have been present for decades. At the clinic we use various techniques along with advice and exercises to remove pain, restore correct movement and improve posture, along with the aim of reducing the risk of a reoccurrence whilst increasing the feeling of general wellbeing. Treatments include acupuncture, soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and manipulation. We also offer treatment during pregnancy that is more gentle the process is very effective in reducing discomfort associated with pregnancy along with maintaining good body movement and alignment.

We recognise that everyone is unique and we will always adapt our care to meet the varying needs of our patients and, even if we have seen similar symptoms present in other patients, we always uniquely tailor treatment the each individuals requirements.” Although, like many chiropractors, a lot of my treatment is focused around the spinal region, I also place much focus on the foundations of the body such as the feet and ankles. Errors here can hinder improvement elsewhere in the body and, if not properly addressed, may lead to faulty movement patterns and misalignments that can ultimately generate knee, hip, back and even neck pain. I have completed extra qualifications in the treatment of the extremities and have a particular interest in this area. The on-site gait scan found within the clinic allows us to complete an in depth assessment of the feet and the translated pressure when an individual walks. This information can add a lot of detail and help successfully manage a patient’s presenting problem.” 19

Shires Chiropractic Clinic is part of the Hand for Heroes Scheme that offers free chiropractic treatment to UK military personnel (currently serving and veterans). We also offer free fifteen minute chiropractic checks for those unsure about treatments - this gives you the opportunity to come to the clinic and discuss your concerns and options regarding treatment. Melissa certainly knows what she is talking about and with her goal of providing the very best in chiropractic care to her patients, whilst also encouraging and educating everyone to take an active role in health and wellbeing, the future is very bright for Shires Chiropractic Clinic.

INTERNATIONAL FOR The International Centre for Birds of Prey celebrates its 50th anniversary this year - it’s the oldest dedicated birds of prey centre in the world. Wye Life chats with the Centre’s Director, Jemima Parry-Jones MBE.

Jemima, what led to the centre being set up? We opened the centre in May 1967. My father had worked for an actor called James Robertson Justice as his professional falconer and, when he finished that job, people would frequently come to see the few birds we had and ask his advice. So my parents thought it would be a good idea to move and start up a place where people could come and see birds of prey and learn how to look after them and partake in falconry. How has the centre evolved during the last fifty years? Over the years it has changed its focus. My father was a serious falconer, and although we have never forgotten our falconry beginnings the focus has quite rightly changed to look at the conservation of all birds of prey world-wide. The centre takes in injured wild birds of prey and where possible rehabilitates them back to the wild.

We take in up to 100 birds a year and have a very nice hospital area for them. We are open to the public and fly birds daily for each and every visitor. This is really important to us, because unless people appreciate the world around them, and want to see it preserved for themselves and their children, the conservation work we do will not succeed. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a falcon stoop or an owl float by, a group of kites diving on tiny bits of thrown meat, or an eagle soaring. All of this can be seen on a daily basis for our visitors throughout the year; we fly three times a day.

We’ve heard that the centre leads the world in captive breeding birds of prey? That’s correct. To date we’ve bred 67 species. The important thing about this is we share that knowledge. Right now our most important work is with vultures because they are now one of the most endangered groups in the world. So we work in India, Nepal, Bulgaria and South Africa teaching people how to conserve vultures. We also run courses and experience days. And, in the UK, we’re running a nest box scheme for Little Owls and Kestrels in apple orchards in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. The local apple growers have been amazingly helpful. Can you tell us about the events that you hold here? Our Owl Evenings are held in the winter, they’re great fun to come to. It’s very special to see the owls at night, especially flying outside in the dark with underground lighting.

CENTRE BIRDS OF PREY

“We also run Experience Days where you can learn to handle and fly various birds.”

We also run experience days where you can learn to handle and fly various birds. We have one big falconry event a year where we have lots of stands around the field with falconry equipment, wonderful artists, food and a bar. We have other people come in and fly birds as well as our normal demonstrations - it’s a great weekend. All the information about our events can be found on our website. How can our readers get involved with your work? Oh, that is a wonderful question! If you live locally, you can come and volunteer. You can volunteer on the bird side, the office, the shop, the café, as someone who can give guided tours (we will teach you) or even be a transporter for us to collect injured wild birds - again we will teach you. You can join as a member which means you can visit as often as you like in a year and most of our members become friends and get roped in for all sorts of things.

You could make donations to the work that we do, leave us legacy in your will, sponsor a bird, the options are myriad! Do you have any plans for your anniversary year? I was fortunate to be given an MBE for services to bird conservation by Her Majesty The Queen, and we are hoping for a Royal Visit this year from HRH The Princess Royal for our 50th anniversary which will be wonderful. We plan a major fundraising campaign as I have a ton of very exciting plans that will benefit not only the wonderful birds that live here, but also the visitors, giving them a better experience, and an appreciation of the conservation work that we do outside the centre as well.

We highly recommend a trip to the centre which is open daily from February 1st - November 30th 10.30am - 5.30pm or dusk (if earlier). Their café opens at 10.30am and closes at the beginning of the last flying demonstration of the day which is 4.15pm in the summer and 3.30pm in the winter.

Brecon Motors is one of the oldest automative names in the Brecon area with the business first appearing in the early 1900s. Run by Jonathan Williams for the past thirty years, with daughter Sara joining ten years ago, this is a real independent family business - no wonder Brecon Motors has been around for more than a century.

BRECON MOTORS

“This family business offer a thoughtful and caring service that is incredibly helpful.” From the outside Brecon Motors may seem like an ordinary car dealership, but with over a hundred years of customer service under its belt you can bet that there’s a lot more to the business than meets the eye. Before the collapse of the MG Rover business in 2005, Brecon Motors was the original franchise holder in the area for many years, thankfully these wonderful cars saw a rebirth shortly after its apparent demise when the Chinese company Shanghai Automotive’purchased the MG brand a year or so later. During this time Brecon Motors moved to providing the people of Brecon with the best range of used cars available and, after a period of success for the born-again MG marque, they were able to once again pick up the franchise and, since 2014, have been offering the latest models from the ever growing brand, the most recent of which will be launching this year!

In addition to the used car sales, plus being a franchise holder for one of the biggest car companies in the world, Brecon Motors also offer car rentals; established in 1996, the company offer an ever expanding fleet of vehicles to rent that range from small cars, 9 and 17 seat minibuses, small/medium/large vans, and Luton vans with tail lifts. To support new and used car owners they have a service and repair workshop for cars of all makes and models, an MOT testing station, air conditioning re-gas facility and, finally, a brand new self storage site in Brecon, offering 20ft secure storage containers with caravan storage also available! Brecon Motors has been around for a very long time and it is easy to see why. This family business offer a thoughtful and caring service that is incredibly helpful, no matter the vehicle trouble you may be in. 28

With a vested interest in the satisfaction of their customers we’re confident you will agree that Brecon Motors should easily last for another hundred years at the very least.

Butterfill’s has built and maintained a strong reputation for their superior flooring solutions and expert fitting service, as well as their diverse range of premium quality beds and mattresses, stylish solid wood furniture and contemporary home furnishings. Wye Life chats with Matthew and Sarah Butterfill in their beautiful showroom in the heart of Llandrindod Wells, Powys…

BUTTERFILL’S BEDS, FLOORING & FURNITURE

When was Butterfill’s launched? We first started trading in 2002, as an expert carpet and floor fitting service. We didn’t have a store back then, just a van, and Matthew did all the fittings and customer care himself. We established a solid reputation, becoming a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, and the business quickly grew through word-of-mouth. We opened our first floor fitting showroom in Builth Wells, but through conversations with customers, we were often asked if we did furniture as well, or if we could recommend somewhere locally that “did good beds”! We explored the best UK manufacturers, and soon became an approved Silentnight and Rest Assured retailer.

This is a fabulous showroom, we understand you moved here last year. Thank you. Yes. Over the years, thanks to amazing customer support and interest, our business and product ranges have grown significantly. It’s important for us to create an open and welcoming customer experience, but we were running out of space at our Builth showroom, with no possibility to expand. We saw an exciting opportunity to acquire a character building in Llandrindod Wells that would give us more open space to develop ‘departments’, offer a more diverse range of products, and therefore create a better spacial experience for our customers.

“We always look for UK-made products.” 30

What can our readers expect to find at your showroom? We offer one of the largest displays of flooring solutions in the area, including Cormar, Karndean, and The Alternative Flooring Co. We have a diverse range of beautifully crafted solid oak and pine furniture lines for the dining room, bedroom and lounge, plus leather and bespoke fabric sofas and chairs. Quilts and pillows from The Fine Bedding Company and Silentnight, plus a complementary selection of home furnishings, accessories, mirrors and lighting. How do you choose what products to retail? We visit the big furniture and design trade fairs, and meet directly with the manufacturers and suppliers. We always look for UK-made products, produced ethically using sustainable materials.

We’re not simply driven by design trends, but by the quality, craftsmanship, durability and long term appeal of every item based on our understanding of our customers, so we carefully and thoughtfully hand pick every item based on these values. Do you offer a delivery service? Absolutely, as well as a free quote and measurement service on our flooring. Plus we install and position furniture items where the customers want them, and remove old items and packaging. We pride ourselves on the highest levels of tailored customer care and service.

managed the floor refurbishment at Llangoed Hall Hotel near Boughrood. What sets you apart from other furniture stores? We believe it’s our attitude to delivering a personal service throughout every aspect of our business. It’s vital that each customer feels important, valued, and satisfied. Our brand motto is, “when only the best will do”, and we work hard to live by this every day.

Opening times Monday - Saturday: 9am - 5pm (4.30pm on Saturday) Butterfill’s Victoria Arcade, Middleton Street Llandrindod Wells, Powys LD1 5DG

Welsh Overland Safari is an independent tour company offering unique overland guided tours of some of the most beautiful, unspoilt landscapes in Europe, as well as rare natural habitats for wildlife. One of Wales’s best kept secrets, the region has a rich and diverse history dating back to well before Roman times. Wye Life chats with Richard Davies about exploring the rugged mountains, lakes, waterfalls and forests of the area.

WELSH OVERLAND Richard what led to you set up the Welsh Overland Safari? My wife and I have been running a successful self-catering and B&B (Pwllgwilym Holiday Cottages), for the past ten years. Having lived and breathed Mid Wales all of my life, coupled with my passion and knowledge of the area, it was a natural progression to set up a tour guide business after a number of requests from guests.

Can you explain what your tours entail? Pre-tour we will discuss what people are looking to get out of their trip; be it sightseeing, walking or a mixture. Once we have tailored a tour specific to the individuals or group we will arrange a pick up point and go from there. You can expect to see a variety of sights, learn about myths and legends along the way and dine at one of our handpicked local eateries, what more would you want?!

How long are your tours? Our set tours range from a full day, approximately eight hours, or a half day, four hours. This may sound a lot but there is a lot to pack in and you’ll be surprised how time flies. As mentioned, we are very flexible to a group’s needs; we have arranged longer tours over a couple of days that include photography courses, bushcraft and falconry experiences - best thing to do is pick up the phone, have a chat and we’ll do our very best to help. What hidden gems are there to be found in Mid Wales? In all honesty too many to mention. To give you a flavour, I’d pick Henrhyd waterfall - it’s the tallest waterfall in the Brecon Beacons with a ninety foot drop, and a little known fact - it was featured as the Batcave in the Dark Knight Rises movie, you can walk behind it and is very easy to access unlike some of the others in the area. 32

The remotest chapel in Wales, Soar-YMynydd, is always very popular and Llanthony Priory where you will find Cwmyoy Church - our very own leaning tower of Pisa right here in Wales.

Congratulations on being finalists at the 2016 Brecon Beacons Tourism Awards recently - do you have any other awards? Thank you - and yes we have. Our B&B, Pwllgwilym Holiday Cottages were recently voted the best B&B in Wales and third best in the UK by Trivago, a worldwide accommodation specialist, for 2017. The award was based on reviews across a number of booking websites and we are over the moon that all our hard work is being recognised, but even more than that we’re humbled that we must be doing something right.

“We aim always to keep our standards high across both businesses.”

SAFARI Apart from more awards, do you have any plans for the future? We aim always to keep our standards high across both businesses and deliver excellent customer service. We have upgraded our website which is very exciting, and I have recently become a Brecon Beacons National Park Dark Skies ambassador, so a dark skies tour would be something we’ve been asked about and would love to develop over time. Richard, you had us at Batcave we love the idea of these fantastic guided tours, in fact we’re checking our diaries to see when we can fit in a tour (or two).

Chris Howell, our avid walker, interviewed founder Dai Powell of this remarkable Facebook Public Group ‘Walking the Brecon Beacons’ which has firmly put this National Park on the map in a matter of months with over 5,000 members. As a fellow walker, Chris has nothing but admiration and respect for this humble ordinary ex-miner and what he has achieved with this rapid success story which has taken him totally by surprise.

TAKE A WALK

ON THE WILD SIDE

Tell us about your background? I was born and breed in Aberfan and from a young boy walked with my father Graham around the local mountains. My grandfather was sextant of Aberfan cemetery when the Disaster happened and we lost family and friends. Like my father, I worked as a miner until the Deep Navigation Mine in Treharris sadly closed in 1991. These days, I live in Merthyr and for the last four years, I have been walking the Beacons mostly on my own and have discovered many wonderful walks. To keep myself fit I walk every weekend and also attend my local gym Daleone Fitness in Merthyr. What gave you the idea to start this Facebook group? I realised that most other National Parks had a Facebook presence that actually offered help and advice for walkers, however Brecon National Park was lacking.

To be honest, I only started the group on August 3rd 2016 for a few friends and family to help, advise and educate them all about the Beacons. I never thought for one minute that we would have such a vibrant following and we even have members from all over the UK, most European countries, Canada and Australia, plus a lot of ex-pats. How has the group page progressed and how can I join? Well, firstly there is a huge influx of advice given from more experienced walkers other than myself, the photography is quite stunning and it’s great to relive everyone’s adventures. I couldn’t have done this without the help of Simon Williams, who is also an experienced walker and very capable on social media. We are now working together with local business to help them promote themselves on our page, for example we now have member discount cards for Go Outdoors stores. 34

Within the info page we have accommodation in the Beacons, our walks are listed as events, kit checklist and route cards. To join the group, you just search ‘Walking the Brecon Beacons’ on Facebook and ask to join; then once a member you can also invite your friends to join. We understand you have even started your own walks? Yes, our first walk was for intermediate walkers around the Brecon Horseshoe and we had 15 walkers attend. Then we organised a supervised beginner’s walk up Pen-y-Fan and had over 60 walkers attend! It was a pleasure giving people the confidence to start walking, many for the first time; giving them knowledge, help and advice on what to wear, basic essentials and health and safety tips. We certainly will have more walks for all levels and always the right quota of group leaders and first aiders.

Please be aware that at present the walks are free, however we do ask for donations because as we are growing we will need to buy more safety equipment and first aid. What’s your favourite part of the Beacons and which season do you like to walk this route? I must admit I love the Central Beacons when it’s snowing and relish the challenge of a difficult walk against the elements. I more often than not walk on my own and my favourite walk is to go on a night walk and wait for the sunrise, there is not a better sight. What advice have you for novice walkers wanting to walk the Beacons? Before walking the Beacons, look for local walking groups and build your stamina gradually by carefully choosing the right level of walk for beginners.

For instance, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal walk is flat in many areas, in particular at Goytre Wharf. Then, once you are ready for the Beacons, start with an experienced walker as the conditions can change for the worse in a matter of minutes. Never walk alone and buy the right equipment, we actually publish a checklist on our info group page which is also published in this feature. You don’t have to buy really expensive gear as there is plenty of helpful reviews online for cheaper products that are more than suitable. What plans have you for the future? We have already had patches for sale and plan to add other merchandise such as T-shirts later this year. We will have specific sponsored walks to help raise money for charities and also to help fund our own safety equipment and first aid. 35

In fact, we are busy organising a Ty Hafan Taff trail walk from Brecon to Cardiff and aiming to walk the 55 miles in 24 hours; we also welcome ideas from our members for future walks. Look out for our forthcoming walks and we have just set up a just giving page to raise money for the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team. Local independent businesses can now sponsor the main header picture for just £50 a week on our Facebook page. Finally my aim is to reach 10,000 members by the end of 2017.’ For more information, please take a look at the Facebook page www.facebook.com /groups/1756645301284928 Apart from profile & group picture all photography captured by (C) Alyn Wallace Photography www.facebook.com/awallacephoto

Established for over thirty years, Acer Tree Services are experienced and professional tree surgeons offering a complete range of services to both local businesses and private clients. Operating to the highest standards, they are independently audited and approved by the Arboriculture Association.

ACER TREE SERVICES

Independently owned and managed by Joe Brandt, the highly experienced and qualified team at Acer Tree Services have been providing a complete range of professional tree services to their customers across Herefordshire and the surrounding counties for over thirty years. From essential tree maintenance through to tree felling and stump removal, they are committed to delivering a prompt, high quality and reliable service every time. “For each job we carry out an initial, no obligation site visit” explains Joe, “which allows us to assess the specific job requirements

and any potential health and safety or environmental issues. Only then will we take the customer through our recommendation and agree a course of action”. The team at Acer also have the experience to advise customers on dealing with Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and any requirements of the local planning process. In addition, they offer a 24 hour call out service for emergencies. As you would expect, Acer Tree Services are covered by £5m public liability insurance alongside £5m employers liability insurance. “Having insurance is obviously important for customer peace of mind, but the critical 42

thing is not having to call on it,” says Joe. “That is why staff training and attention to detail is a priority in all that we do”. They manage their work to the latest British Standards, with staff trained to the highest levels in not only all aspects of tree surgery and the operation of associated machinery, but also in important areas such as first aid, aerial rescue, and traffic management. “When dealing with potentially dangerous machines like chainsaws, sometimes in extreme conditions, health and safety has to be at the forefront of our minds”. It is this ‘belt and braces’ professional approach that has not only made the

PORK & T WO VEG Award-winning rare breed, free range pork sausages. Before climbing up and down trees for a living, Joe Brandt of Acer Trees enjoyed working on the family farm, a passion that never left him. So in 2010 he started raising rare breed pigs on the five acre small holding that surrounds his Woolhope home, and Pork & Two Veg was born. The free range pigs are raised in a sustainable way, maturing slowly for the best possible flavour. The resulting sausages, bacon and pork joints proved so popular with local customers and businesses alike, that a handful of pigs soon became fifty or sixty. The Pork & Two Veg Farm Shop opened three years ago, selling not only pork but also a selection of goods from other small local Herefordshire producers. This was followed by the sight of Joe and his wife Sally in their catering trailer appearing at local food fairs, fetes and village events cooking up the Full Porky! In 2014 they received national recognition when their Herefordshire inspired Pork & Elderflower sausage won a Golden Banger award in British Sausage week. To quote celebrity judge Phil Vickery, “I loved it!”.

business so successful, recently winning significant local government contracts, but has also enabled Acer Tree Services to join the small number of tree surgeons approved by the Arboriculture Association. “Being independently audited ensures that we are doing the right things, and helps us to offer the best possible service to our customers” says Joe. As part of that service, and knowing that not all jobs need professional tree surgeons to carry them out, Acer Tree Services have recently started a one day workshop to provide people with the basic knowledge and skills to maintain and operate a chainsaw safely.

“Many people own or hire chainsaws for small jobs such as cutting up logs. We want to make sure that they do it safely and know how to look after their saw. If people are interested, all details can be found on our website.” With different challenges every day, Joe and his team are ready and equipped to take them on.

Voted best in the West Midlands in the 2016 Wedding Industry Awards, family run Good Intents provide marquee hire and event organisation services throughout the UK. Wye Life chats with owners Bruce and Lucy Schofield at their Ledbury base.

GOOD INTENTS

Why Good Intents? And how did you get involved? We first met at agricultural college. Years later we both left agriculture to work for Lucy’s family marquee businesses, manufacturing and hiring marquees. These businesses were subsequently taken over and, in 2003, we decided to do our own thing. We knew of Good Intents, it had been going since 1985 but the owners were ready to retire. We bought the business and moved it from Droitwich to Ledbury, and grew from there.

days, graduations and open days, equestrian and rugby hospitality (not on the same site, I hasten to add), and any other excuse for a jolly good party, or any requirement for a large white tent! Wow! And what makes your business stand out from other marquee companies? We are innovative, bespoke and certainly not the norm; we embrace peoples’ ideas and vision, and bring

their dreams to reality. We offer the personal touch; Lucy is mainly in the office pulling the strings, while I carry out site visits. We employ five full-time staff, and several more casual seasonal workers, although the season seems to be lengthening every year! We usually only run one site at a time, so that I can supervise, and I, or a senior manager, will usually be present on site during the event to ensure that everything runs smoothly. We have a variety of shapes and sizes of marquee, seating up to around 800 guests under one roof. Do you provide other services as well as marquee hire? Absolutely. We can be a one-stopshop, providing flooring, lighting and electrics, interior décor, furniture, dance floors, posh loos, catering facilities, bars, chillout furniture, and even mirrorballs! We also provide very effective heating solutions for our marquees, particularly in the winter months! We can source pretty much

What are your marquees used for? We’ve been involved with pretty much any kind of marquee hire that you can imagine. Weddings will doubtless always be our core business, but we also provide marquees for birthday parties (all ages), anniversaries, charity balls, festivals, home and garden shows, corporate hospitality, product launches, Christmas parties, opera festivals, (bear with), school and university speech 44

anything, and deliver it all with our own fleet of transport. We can recommend caterers, florists, bands and other suppliers who we have worked with. What areas do you cover, and how can our readers book your services? We can install our marquees anywhere in the UK (and beyond!), but most of our work is within sixty miles of Ledbury. We have recently supplied Llangoed Hall, Flanesford Priory, Eastnor Castle and Glewstone Court. In fact we’re supplying the marquee for the Wedding Showcase at Glewstone on Saturday

October 8th and we’ll be attending, so hopefully lots of people will pop along and say hello, we’re very friendly! Potential clients can request a quotation by phone or email. We produce 2d and 3d visuals of your marquee so that you can see exactly what you are getting. What are your plans for the future? We’ve already taken lots of bookings for 2017 and 2018. We aim to grow organically, always improving and staying ahead of the pack, keeping our (award winning!) reputation for excellent customer service. 45

Gary & Karen Homewood are delighted to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter Amy to Mr Sam Nicholls. Their wedding will, of course, be held at the gorgeous Glewstone Court Country House where they work full time in the family business; Amy in the role of Events & Marketing Manager and Sam as Hotel Manager.

GLEWSTONE COURT Sam and Amy met at The George in Stamford where they both worked in hospitality, and Glewstone Court has given them the opportunity to put their training and skills into practice at an entirely different level. The guest feedback and awards are testimony to their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to delivering a unique customer experience. So, in December 2018 it will be their turn to experience some of the magic of a dream wedding at Glewstone Court Country House. Congratulations Amy on your recent engagement to Sam. We’ve heard that Sam proposed to you on the banks of the Thames on your birthday (see photo). That sounds like one of the most romantic proposals. Now your feet are back on the ground, what else is new since we last saw you? Thank you! It was very romantic, the perfect day. 2016 was a very good year for us - we continued our programme of

refurbishment with a complete overhaul of The Shelley and Farquaad rooms, and also carried out further essential restoration work to maintain the integrity and beauty of the magnificent Grade II listed Manor House, all of which we are sure will enhance the guest experience and enjoyment of Glewstone Court Country House. And you promised us news of exciting events planned for 2017! Can you reveal those plans now? We’ve increased our Wine Tasting Dinners from six to nine this year by popular demand, so make sure you look out for these each month - especially those presented by wine growers. Our next one will be on Saturday 1st April. We will be holding another Murder Mystery event this Summer in May as the humour and innuendos in this extremely well received cabaret act was the perfect accompaniment to our delicious three course dinner. Make sure you book early as limited spaces are available. 46

We will also be holding our annual Jazz Night again this year in August; we’re hoping for lots of sunshine so cocktails can be served in our fabulous courtyard.

We know that local, seasonal produce is of the very highest importance for you. Yes, wherever possible our Head Chef sources the ingredients for our menus from local suppliers. This not only ensures the freshness and best quality possible, but supports local growers and businesses. Our menus use Welsh Lamb and Herefordshire Beef, locally produced fruit, vegetables, and cheeses. This includes our six course Taster Menu introduced in the last quarter of 2016 which has proved very popular with our food enthusiasts and for those special occasions and celebrations. You can also find a wine produced from locally grown grapes on the wine list!

What are you planning for Mother’s Day? We have a special Sunday lunch menu available on Mother’s Day with delicious hand-crafted desserts so we can help you to really spoil mum! What are your hopes and plans for the future? We have lots of plans, but not all of them can be revealed yet! We absolutely love planning and hosting events, especially weddings, and had many wonderful couples tie the knot here in 2015 and 2016.

We’re working with Debbie Hutchinson this year hosting various small events to help support Breast Cancer Haven, starting with the Big Tea Cosy which took place on February 1st. Glewstone Court is also being used increasingly by local businesses both as a conference and meeting venue and for company and client dinners. Keep up to date with our events and news by following us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We look forward to seeing you all this year.

“Wherever possible our Head Chef sources the ingredients for our menus from local suppliers.”

Opening hours Monday - Saturday 12pm - 2.30pm and 6.30pm - 8.45pm Sundays 12pm - 3pm for traditional Sunday lunch (booking is advised)

With weddings already planned and booked as far as 2020 we want to extend our options further to give couples the opportunity to say their vows in the garden beneath our fabulous Cedar of Lebanon tree with stunning views across Herefordshire. Therefore we are looking at outdoor ceremony structures and pergolas with floral arches for a truly romantic countryside wedding ceremony.

At the heart of a city with a rich musical and choral heritage is Hereford Chamber Choir, an enthusiastic and musically thriving ensemble. Founded in 1983, the choir rehearses every Tuesday from 7.30 to 9.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Hereford, and gives six concerts a year in churches and other venues across Herefordshire, singing a wide range of choral music, both sacred and secular, from the Renaissance to the present day.

HEREFORD CHAMBER The young dynamic singer and conductor Simon Harper was appointed music director in September 2014, and since then has achieved huge success, transforming the choir in terms of membership, repertoire, and its high standard of performance. In 2016 Hereford Chamber Choir launched a new CD English Choral Gems, recorded by Blair Music Productions. Simon has also established a successful choral scholarship scheme, generously funded by the Friends of Hereford Three Choirs Festival, to give young talented singers the opportunity to join the choir and develop their skills in choral singing under professional direction. In February the choir sings a weekend of services at Worcester Cathedral, and on Saturday 1st April the choir presents an exciting programme of music inspired by Gregorian chant

including Allegri’s exquisite “Miserere”, Duruflé’s beautiful “Quatre Motets” and two specially commissioned new works by Kerensa Briggs and Edward Pullin. This concert takes place at Holy Trinity Church, Whitecross Road, Hereford at 7.30pm and we are very grateful to the Elmley Small Grants Arts Fund for their generous financial support. On Friday 26th May the chamber choir gives a concert in Hereford Cathedral, accompanied by professional orchestra Central England Camerata. This is an annual event in aid of the Friends of Hereford Cathedral, and the programme will include the ever popular “Gloria” by Vivaldi and Charpentier’s vibrant setting of the “Te Deum”. On Saturday 1st July, the choir’s concert season concludes with an event at the Bishop’s Palace, Hereford - music will be interspersed by presentations from sponsors of the choir, including Sixteen 48

Ridges. Supporting and collaborating with local businesses is something the choir feels is very important – Hereford Chamber Choir is also sponsored by Henryka Jewellery who, this year, have produced a piece of jewellery for sale based on the choir’s logo. A group of singers from the choir has recently formed Strike a Chord, a project which involves members of the choir going into care homes and singing with people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. This is a hugely beneficial and worthwhile community initiative and very rewarding and enjoyable for all involved. To maintain high standards, new members of the choir are auditioned and at present the choir has vacancies for tenors and basses. Please do get in touch via the website www. herefordchamberchoir.org.uk if you are interested in joining the choir.

CHOIR Tickets for our concerts can be prebooked by calling 01432 274183. For detailed information about what the choir is up to this year pick up a copy of the 2016-17 events brochure, visit the website, or find us on Facebook. Our sponsors - Sixteen Ridges Sixteen Ridges, producers of English Wines based in Ledbury, are delighted to be sponsoring the Hereford Chamber Choir for their 2016 – 2017 programme of concerts. “The rich tradition of choral singing in Herefordshire resonates with the history of our Redbank vineyard; in the thirteenth century Thomas Cantilupe, Bishop of Hereford instructed the planting of the Ledbury vineyard. It’s our pleasure to replant 750 years on and a testament to the heritage and tradition of the site as an exceptional spot for vines as reputedly a ‘pipe’ of the wine was sent to Rome for the Pope.” Visit www.sixteenridges.co.uk for more information.

It may be a town famous for Henry V, Geoffrey of Monmouth and Charles Rolls, but Monmouth is now celebrating its contemporary history with an excellent exhibition about its legendary recording studio, Rockfield.

The story of Rockfield, Monmouth and Music. A new exhibition at Monmouth Museum. From Robert Plant to Motorhead, Queen to Tom O’Dell, some of the biggest names in the music industry have passed through the doors of this former farm and riding stable to create music that is loved around the world. Stables To Studios tells the story of brothers Charles and Kingsley Ward; two musicians and dairy farmers who transformed the family farm, once part of the Rolls Hendre Estate, into an internationally famous residential recording studio which is still in operation today. M ONMOUTH HIGH STREET WHERE SHOPPING & RELAXING GO HAND IN HAND David Cummings., Charman of Monmouth and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce commented. Nestling in the tranquil lower reaches of the beautiful Wye Valley, a centre for tourism since 1780, Monmouth is a very successful market town. Good road links and a mixture of independent and niche retailers, create an environment that produces arguably the lowest level of empty shops for any town in Wales. We attract day visitors from as far away as Cardiff, Ludlow, Bristol and Swindon, so must have the retail offering to suit all tastes! If you want Italian, Mexican, Spanish or Thai restaurants, speciality teas, wood burning stoves, homewares, housewares, haberdashery, beauticians, designer shoes, designer fashion, toys, gifts, handmade jewellery, or even a coffee in a cafĂŠ in a quiet courtyard, then Monmouth is the place to visit.

Also, take a little while to imbibe the history of a town famous for its connections to Henry V, Geoffrey of Monmouth, the Chartists and Charles Rolls. Spare time to visit the Museum, the Castle, old Monnow Bridge and our iconic Shire Hall. In 2017 the visitor experience to Monmouth will be enhanced by the new 90 space free car pack on Rockfield Road within easy walking distance of town, and soon, a new pay and display car park close to the traffic lights on the dual carriageway. So not finding a parking space should be a thing of the past! For those contemplating a longer stay we have the brand new Premier Inn hotel on the Portal Road featuring 60 bedrooms and a Thyme restaurant. If the weather is fine, rest awhile overlooking the gatehouse on old Monnow Bridge or watch the rowing boats, canoes, swans and the occasional kingfisher on the banks of the Wye. 55

Whatever your palate, retail taste or way you like to relax, we believe that Monmouth is the place to satisfy all.

Chepstow’s independent preparatory and boarding school, St John’s on-the-Hill, is set in beautiful surroundings, overlooking Chepstow Castle. It offers co-educational schooling for children aged 3 months to 13 years, with wraparound care, before and after school, to help working parents and even flexible boarding for pupils from Year 3 and above.

“Every teacher knows every child and takes an interest in their well-being and happiness.” Head, Ruth Frett, who was appointed in September 2016, talks to us about the challenges of her first term at St John’s on-the-Hill School. What stands out over your first term as Head of St John’s on-the-Hill? My first term was a whirlwind. What stands out are the amazing opportunities our children have at St John’s and beyond. St John’s offers huge opportunities in academic subjects, sport, music and drama. Every child has the opportunity to play for a school team and perform in a play. Our facilities include a professional stage, pool, Astro-turf, dedicated indoor sports hall, tennis and netball courts and a range of outdoor pitches. We offer many cultural trips in the UK and overseas and lots of inspiring visitors come to the school. Since I joined we have welcomed local artists, famous authors, musicians, theatre companies, academics and Olympic champions.

ST JOHN’S During the first term as Head, my target was to get to know all the children and it has been extremely fulfilling listening to their passions and dreams for the future.

What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve experienced to date? My most challenging role is ensuring that our children are ready to face their own challenges with confidence. Nowadays we hear a lot about the pressures on young children we help prepare them for a fast-changing world. St John’s has an impressive history of academic excellence. We use tests to allow us to identify the best teaching strategies for each pupil. Our class sizes are small and children are taught by subject specialists from a young age. By offering innovative learning methods we get children excited about learning, so they can achieve their full potential. 56

Most of our children leave at age 13 and I have been busy visiting schools so we can help with the transition. Our pupils are in demand and go on to the UK’s best senior schools - of course our pupils often feel anxious about entrance exams but we instil a positive attitude that stands them in good stead for their academic careers. It is not just about an acquisition of knowledge, facts and skills. It is also about developing emotional intelligence.

What are you most proud of? I am so proud of each and every one of our children and always remind them of how much they make a difference to our community. We encourage the ‘St John’s Way’ which is a code of behaviour which reinforces self and mutual respect and the qualities of being conscientious, pro-active and responsible. This certainly works, as several sports coaches from other schools have paid tribute to our children’s sportsmanlike attitude and feisty spirit.

ON-THE-HILL I also get many positive comments from visitors to our school who remark on how engaging and well-mannered St John’s pupils are. What would you say to any of our readers who may be considering St John’s for their child(ren)? St John’s is a child-centred, happy and family-orientated school. A place where children are valued, heard and allowed space and time to achieve their passions. We work hard to ensure St John’s is a wonderful experience for all of our children - every teacher knows every child and takes an interest in their well-being and happiness. The school has something very special and it is fabulous to see our children thrive. You really have to see the school for yourself - our next official Open Morning is on Saturday 4 March but my door really is always open should you wish to arrange a visit. I would be delighted to welcome you to our school.

What plans do you have for the future? There are lots of plans for future development such as expanding our boarding and building a state-of-theart dining room and art and design technology facility.

This school has a rich heritage and in seven years’ time we will be celebrating our centenary. My vision is to build on the excellent academic and co-curricular successes of our past pupils. We are increasing our musical and sports’ profile and have hosted numerous events both in the school and in the wider community. My vision is to ensure that St John’s onthe-Hill is an inspirational school where every child thrives and achieves their full potential. As we all know, childhood is a fleeting experience and I want the children of St John’s to have their dreams realised. 57

Hedgehogs Nursery has an excellent reputation for providing a caring, safe and fun-filled environment for babies and children aged three months to four years old. As part of the Dean Close Foundation it belongs to a group of four nurseries/preschools: Teddies, Robins, Squirrels and Hedgehogs. They share the excellent resources and expertise of leading co-educational day and boarding schools: Dean Close in Cheltenham, and St John’s on-the-Hill in Chepstow. Wye Life chats with Manager Nicole Ricketts.

HEDGEHOGS NURSERY Nicole can you tell us a bit about your background and what attracted you to Hedgehogs? Having completed a Law Degree, I started training to be a solicitor but decided that career wasn’t for me. I then completed my Primary and Early Years Teaching Qualification followed by a Masters in Early Education. I am now delighted to be the manager of Hedgehogs. I was attracted to Hedgehogs Nursery because the team shared my passion for early childhood education. We appreciate the unique needs of every child and offer a flexible learning environment that celebrates the many stages of children’s development. What advice would you offer our readers who may be embarking on choosing a nursery? I always ask parents about whether they have visited other childcare providers.

It is important for parents to get a feel for the different settings. Some will be more play based, others academic, some will be smaller, bigger etc. Until you get an idea about what’s available, it is hard to establish what is important to you. As parents go round the different settings, similarities and differences will be visible; it’s about focusing on what is important for you and for your child. What would you tell parents about Hedgehogs on their first visit here? I always tell parents about how our highly qualified staff provide the best care, learning experiences and stimulating environment for young children. Our homely babies suite caters for ages 3 to 18 months, our open-plan toddler room is perfect for children aged 12 to 36 months, and preschool from 36 months to school age. 58

As a nursery we are always developing, through staff attending specialist training and investment in resources and facilities. We recently completed a refurb of our toddler room, giving it a fresh new look and some exciting new equipment, including an indoor gym. What’s a typical daily routine at Hedgehogs? We open at 7.30am, at which point our children have a hearty “buffet” style breakfast which gets them ready for their day. After breakfast they dive straight into play - whether that is indoors or outdoors. Adults will enhance children’s play, challenging them and extending their learning. Some activities are adult led, which may focus on specific areas of development, but adults are guided by our children’s interests.

What makes Hedgehogs stand out? Our parents appreciate the extracurricular clubs that we offer. Our pre-schoolers have weekly swimming lessons, music club, dance club, French lessons and rugby club as well as opportunities to go on regular trips and outings using our school minibuses. Our toddlers get to join in the fun too; they also have a weekly dance class, multisensory French sessions and a music club. We are very fortunate to be based on the St John’s school site so have lots of outdoor space for exploring, a sports hall for soft play and PE sessions, and a professional stage for concerts and ceremonies. The opportunity to access teachers who can bring a wealth of knowledge in subjects such as science, music, art and PE is invaluable.

A refreshing and flexible alternative to conventional office rental, Basepoint Business Centre Chepstow offers high quality and cost effective office space along with a variety of virtual office packages and serviced meeting rooms, strategically located just off junction 2 of the M48. Wye Life chats with Basepoint Centre Manager Ian Mitchell.

BASEPOINT

We understand that you’re planning to revamp your office space, can you tell us more? Yes, Basepoint Chepstow will be undergoing a large-scale refurbishment to its meeting room and break out areas over the next few months. We will be expanding our office space for a number of licensees and improving the facilities offered to our clients by installing new kitchenette areas on the second and first floors as well as moving the meeting room and breakout to the ground floor for ease of access for both licensee staff and the Basepoint management team.

What makes Basepoint stand out above other business centres? Basepoint Business Centres are dedicated to supporting SMEs and start-up businesses and, in addition to our range of business services, we aim to provide the right infrastructure and environment which encourages and nurtures business growth not only within our centres but also in the local business community. All our business centres organise free networking events which can help new businesses to meet vital contacts who will help grow and develop their business. That sounds interesting, please tell us more? We host our B2B Networking hub events on a bi-monthly basis and this gives us the opportunity to engage with a number of external partners and also give the opportunity for our current licensees to network with other local businesses as well as taking in an informative and entertaining guest speaker. 60

We have had a wide range of guests talk about a variety of diverse subjects; most recently we had gold medal winning Paralympian Andy Lewis along to talk about his very personal story and his journey to becoming the Para-triathlon Champion at the Rio Paralympics in September 2016. We know that Basepoint proactively supports many charities - can you tell us about this? The Basepoint company is owned and operated by the ACT Foundation charity that was formed in 1994 and provides grants to individuals and other charities, principally in the UK, with the aim of enhancing the quality of life for people in need, particularly those who have a physical or mental disability or the aged. Each Basepoint centre is given the opportunity to nominate and support a chosen charity for the year and get involved with its fundraising activities as well as match funding these events to a maximum of ÂŁ10,000 for the year.

“ We host our B2B Networking hub events on a bi-monthly basis.” To date Basepoint Chepstow has been associated with St. David’s Hospice Care and will, by the end of April 2017, have donated £30,000 to the charity through match funding a range of fundraising activities including the Dalmatian Bike Ride and the Transporter Bridge Abseil, both of which have had direct participation from Basepoint and its licensees. Do you have any future plans? Yes, Basepoint are planning an expansion of the company over the next five years and are looking at a range of business centres across the country, both new build and acquisition. It’s a very exciting time to be part of the Basepoint journey.

Monmouthshire Conservatory Company are proud of their fabulous site at Pengethley Garden Centre in Ross-on-Wye and rightly so. We took our time to browse all the products and services this independent family-run business provides, before stopping to catch up with owner Chris Atwell. From the beautiful pine log cabins and superb bespoke greenhouses, to stylish furnished conservatories and skyrooms, the company’s showcase gives you a great feel for what might be possible in your own home and garden.

MONMOUTHSHIRE CONSERVATORY COMPANY Chris, your new Aluminium Skyroom Orangery is looking fantastic. Thank you. This build is a real showstopper; the Aluminium roof system, doors and windows are powder coated in a striking red finish and the outside painted in a subtle dovetail grey. The interior is complemented by a fully fitted contemporary kitchen, complete with granite worktops and central island. Here at Monmouthshire Conservatory Company, all of our show conservatories and orangeries are fully furnished. We hope to inspire our customers and allow them to visualise these builds as fully functioning spaces, designed to be utilised all year round. For our readers who haven’t benefited from seeing one, what exactly is a Skyroom? A Skyroom is a specific roof-system design.

This design incorporates aluminium frames married with large expanses of high-performance glass. It allows an abundance of natural light, similar to that of a conservatory; however, the finish emulates a classic orangery style. These results offer a contemporary, slimline and elegant build, bound to complement any home. Can you talk us through your showroom? Our show-site offers four fantastic builds for you to peruse and enjoy. Along with our new red Aluminium Skyroom, we also have a cream foil-coated UPVC conservatory. Next to this we have a black powder-coated Aluminium conservatory and last but not least, our impressive UPVc Livinroom orangery. Within these builds, we also have Bifold, sliding, French and composite doors as well as several window styles. 62

Any plans for the future? Our only plan for the future is to enjoy a year as positive and inspiring as 2016! We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy new year. We would also like to thank our fantastic team of trusted trades-people; without your skills, knowledge and commitment, we would not be the business we are today. Here’s to 2017 and hopefully, many more successful years to come. We’ll certainly second that - and a very happy and successful new year to you too Chris. Monmouthshire Conservatory Company’s show site is open from 9.15am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 10.30am - 4pm on Saturdays - remember to tell them Wye Life sent you.

“Very friendly family run business that is professional and helpful. They worked with us to create the exact look we wanted and it exceeded our expectations. All the workmen were lovely and the quality of their work is brilliant. Would definitely recommend to others. Thank you so much.

One of the real pleasures of publishing is meeting new people. A chance encounter in the Vale introduced us to Rob Higgins who owns a modest smallholding in Peterston, and is a Director of a brand new(ish) gin distillery hidden in the depths of the valleys. We had to visit, we just had to.

ECCENTRIC CRAFT GINS ECCENTRIC CRAFT GINS

The fabulous four… Eccentric Gin currently produces four quite distinct gins (we have to admit, after tasting them, we’re fans). Here’s how Eccentric describes its range… MADAM GENEVA London dry: 42% abv. A London dry as it should be. Simple, dry and juniper forward with citrus and a hint of liquorice and some subtle floral and sweet characters added by the sacred duo ‘meadowsweet and wild sunflower’. LIMBECK A new Western style gin: 45% abv. A gorgeously heady mix of blue ginger and citrus with tarragon, Seville orange and Orris. Rested in recycled burgundy French oak casks to develop a smooth texture. The oak casks leave a subtle peach colour, which will vary subtly with each batch (that’s craft!).

Hidden in a secret location, Eccentric Gin, is a craft gin distillery producing a superb range of very unique and innovative gins. Now most new gin distilleries would give themselves a pat on the back for launching one good gin in their first year. Eccentric produced four. And not only that, these particular four gins have been going down a storm with connoisseurs and gin lovers right across the UK. Using a combination of traditional methods fused with established innovative botanicals (even barrel ageing some gins - very clever stuff), the result is a range of smooth gins with flavours that appeal to all ages and palates. Eccentric originally operated in Llantrisant in 2015 but recently moved to larger premises. Eccentric’s innovative gins are distilled by a mix of brewers, mixologists and even a freeman of Llantrisant. Indeed it was William Price, a true eccentric, with radical, innovative ideas that served as the inspiration for the Eccentric brand.

Described as one of the most unique men in Victorian Britain, William Price (1800 - 1893) was a physician and freeman of Llantrisant. “He was quite the eccentric!” says Rob, “He was a believer in free love, democracy, and the emancipation of women, druidism and legalised cremation. He really sums up the Eccentric ethos!”

YOUNG TOM Fresh juniper malt gin: 46% abv. Fermented from ipa wash and refined to a clean aromatic distillate. Naturally sweetened and vapour infused then rested. A sweet and floral style of gin with fennel, wild sunflower root and star anise seeds. Rested for 6 weeks to develop its flavours…

London Dry Gin, Dublin Dry Gin, Edinburgh Dry Gin, and even Plymouth have had a Gin named after them for many years. Eccentric Gin produce an innovative craft gin called Cardiff Dry finally putting Cardiff the capital of Wales on the gin map at long last.

CARDIFF DRY A unique dry gin: 37.5%abv. A new style of gin chosen by the people of south wales. Rich herbal notes of rosemary, fennel, sorrel and liquorice, together with citrus notes from the lemongrass and verbena. Perhaps the new aperitif gin of the world?

I ask Rob what are Eccentric’s plans for the future? “More gins! But we’re also planning on growing and harvesting Juniper in the Vale of Glamorgan to produce our own gins making it a truly local and Welsh product. We have also been helping clubs and societies with their fundraising by conducting gin tasting sessions and ‘master classes’ time. Which are obviously great fun.” We’ll drink to that. 68

If you’re a retailer, hotel, bar, pub or restaurant that would like an Eccentric behind your bar, please get in touch. You can buy single bottles online at www.eccentricgin.com or on Saturdays from our outlet in Petertston super Ely or at Caerphilly. Call 029 20 397554. www.eccentricgin.com rob@eccentricgin.com

Comprising of three generations of Master Craftsmen, Teulu continues to go from strength to strength, providing handmade, hand painted, bespoke kitchens and individual pieces of furniture, all made in their workshop in Brynmenyn.

TEULU

BESPOKE KITCHENS A Teulu kitchen is exclusively made to your own design and style. Units are made to measure and hence sizes are adapted to ensure a perfect fit in even the most awkward space. Using an experienced, professional kitchen designer is key. They will be able to help you make the best use of the space; good designers know what works and what doesn’t. They know what needs to be included in a design, how to make the space functional as well as appealing. Teulu have recently joined forces with Anthony Soroko and John Griffiths to set up Korona Kitchens.

Between them they will oversee the running of the showroom, sales and designing. 72

This Teulu kitchen was installed into an area that was previously two rooms. One wall was taken out to open up the space which allowed for more light and space. The kitchen is now a much more social, relaxing area for the whole family to chill out. All building works completed by A One Construction.

This Korona Kitchen was purchased on a supply and fit basis. The minor building works undertaken by A One Construction.

KORONA

With the family links to established building company, A One Construction, they can also provide information, guidance and prices on any building works required to realise your dream renovation. There is so much product information and availability out there, it can all seem a bit overwhelming. We ask Director, Fiona Evans, how to make sense of it all. “Because we work with kitchens day in and day out, we’re able to bring 73

our experience and expertise to the table and help you hone your ideas and thoughts into the perfect kitchen for your taste and budget. We have a real passion and enthusiasm for making your dreams a reality. It really doesn’t have to be complicated. When Steve Lewis and Tracey Lewis were building their stunning new home, they needed a reputable, passionate and creative company to supply them with windows and bi-fold doors. Here, Mr Lewis tells us more.

A TOUCH OF GLASS

Who are you and what do you do? We have recently moved back to Wales after twenty years of living overseas in Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai. We have a consultancy business providing specialist contract advice to construction companies in the Middle East, Asia and UK. I split my time between Wales and Dubai at the moment, serving our client base in both UK and GCC regions. Tracey is based in Wales and takes care of the administrative side of the business as well as managing the home and our three children. Tell us about your home? Before moving back to Wales we spent the best part of a year finding the right plot. Our criteria was to find a property that needed modernising, within walking distance of Cowbridge and on an elevated site. We eventually found a house for sale which was built in the 1970s and met our criteria.

After further research of the VAT rules and, based on the condition survey results, we decided to demolish the entire house and build a new dwelling rather than going down the refurb route. From that point forward our criteria was to only engage package contractors and suppliers that were passionate about their trade and or products. We also made a conscious effort to source local tradesmen and suppliers to put something back into the community. This worked well and we employed a Cowbridge based architect (Don Mitchell Associates) and even a steel fabricator living in the same street. How did you hear about Alexander James? Alexander James were introduced to us by the quantity surveyor who was responsible for sourcing trade contractors that fitted with our criteria. 76

Did you get quotations from other companies? Yes, the quantity surveyor and architect introduced us to three or four other windows and bi-fold door suppliers who we also interviewed and received quotes from. What made you choose to work with Alexander James? The passion of its management team and the insightful technical questions asked by Alexander James at tender interview made it clear they were thinking seriously about the challenges of the job (both logistical and operational). This gave us and the architect the comfort that Alexander James were capable of delivering a quality installation. Were their quotes competitive? Yes, in addition to the passion and technical competence, Alexander James’s price was competitive.

In fact, they came in just under budget, so we were able to add on additional features such as in glass blinds and enhanced finished to the windows and door frames. What work did they carry out for you? Alexander James supplied and installed over seventeen windows all of various shapes and sizes, some of them being complex triangular sections. Alexander James also installed three bi-folding doors, each of them over 3m wide. How did you find the process of working with Alexander James? We found them a pleasure to work with. The work was to a great standard and completed on time. Their on-site team are very professional and friendly. Their after sales service is also efficient and responsive to the usual snagging issues that arise as the building settles. In fact, we required some additional work in the form of a dog flap to the glass back door.

Everyone told us it could not be done in a full glass panel due to the risk of breaking, but Alexander James said they would welcome the challenge and came up with a solution by using thicker glass. This vindicates our reasoning for seeking out companies passionate about what they do, since Alexander James’s competitors who are solely focused on maximising profits, may not have invested the time in giving us the desired solution. Are you enjoying your new home? Yes, it’s fantastic and has turned out better than we expected. Again this is down to tradesmen taking pride in their work and making sure they not only deliver what is contracted, but going the extra mile when they see an opportunity to enhance features. With regards to Alexander James’s work scope, our favourite feature has got to be the bi-folding doors. 77

When they are opened up fully on a sunny day, the uninterrupted elevation brings in a tremendous amount of light and you feel that you are part of the outdoor landscape. Would you be happy to recommend Alexander James to family, friends and colleagues? Yes. Several people have asked who did our doors and windows installation and we have passed on Alexander James’s contact details without hesitation. The world’s changing. Pollsters and political experts are consistently wrong. Where can we turn? “Try Bart Simpson!” jokes Neil Ballard of Lewis Ballard Accountants. Way back in 2000, the irreverent Simpsons character saw a future with Donald Trump as President of America. Intended as a ridiculous joke, it’s hard to believe it’s actually come true. Neil takes time out to ponder the implausible…

L EWIS BALLARD

These are certainly interesting times. Once, when someone with silver blonde hair, huge white teeth and a scary tangerine tan monopolised the press, you knew it was just an outrageous reality TV star. Now the reality TV star is also US president! And what about Brexit? Whether for or against - who really predicted that one? And who really knows what to do next? The unexpected happens surprisingly often… Bart may not have all the answers but, joking aside, in turbulent times old ways of thinking won’t do. Back in 1789 Benjamin Franklin wrote, “…nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” However, as businesses worry about Brexit, Trump or Isis, it’s true that our tax obligations still remain. Yet with quarterly digital tax submissions beginning in 2018 even this system is undergoing a complete overhaul.

Time for a fresh approach to tax? Finding the thought of tax bills painful, many people wait until the last possible minute to look at their Personal Tax, VAT or Corporation Tax affairs. Resulting in overdue tax bills and often hefty fines, penalties and interest charges too. This puts extreme pressure on cash-flow, which seriously damages their business. Just when it’s crucial to know exactly how you’re doing, this ‘I hate paying tax’ last minute approach leads to poor decisions, extra stress and, more often than not, even more tax than necessary. Under the quarterly tax regime, fines and penalties could mount-up even very sharply. Wagging that tail… My advice is always to make sure the tax tail isn’t wagging the business dog! In other words make decisions to strengthen your business, not just to hide from tax. 78

After all tax is the by-product of success. If you’re not successful you won’t have any tax to pay, but you won’t have profits either. Who wants a business like that?’ Meeting the Digital Challenge… Lewis Ballard are Gold Partners of Xero, the world’s leading cloud accounting providers. Our in-house expert Sam Howells, presents on the benefits of using this cutting edge software at the Apple Showroom. ‘It’s been amazing, working alongside two such prestigious companies. It gives us confidence that our approach is providing the best tools and strategies for people to use.’ Saving you tax… Our team of Chartered Accountants and our Chartered Tax adviser Johanna Evans will save you tax and structure your business to keep as much of your hard earned cash as possible.

We also focus on building brilliant businesses, which prosper in these most challenging times. Giving you the rewards your hard work deserves, with the time to enjoy them. When you know how you’re doing in real-time, how much money you make and what you owe, you’re ready to seize opportunities, without mounting tax liabilities holding you back. Because, in this world, when everything is uncertain, anything is possible!

Wye Life meets talented furniture designer and craftsman, Matthew Smith.

DRAGONFLY WOODWORK How did you become a master carpenter? Please tell us about your training. I grew up in the heart of south Wales. My dad was active in teaching me how to build and create from a young age. At ten years old I made a picket fence for my grandparents’ garden. Then, through making many go-carts and an eccentric bird house, I discovered a love for working with wood. In 1997 I completed a four-year apprenticeship in traditional carpentry and joinery (which also included all aspects of the building trade). A few years later, after working for the firm in which I learnt my trade, I moved to the island of Jersey. There I worked for an established company before setting up a business on my own. I worked on and oversaw many projects, covering pretty much all aspects in and around houses, farms,

barns and commercial buildings. I was fortunate to work for many customers who appreciated fine detail and highly skilled, traditional craftsmanship. After fiften years of living and working in Jersey, my heart brought me back to south Wales, where I have set up a workshop in the Brecon Beacons. I am now working on furniture, by commission, where I like to use an array of timbers, from the perfectly straight to the most unusual. I have the ability and machinery to fell and plank trees, so furniture can be made using wood from a clients’ estate. The uniqueness of each piece I make sometimes involves combining wood with other material like steel or glass. When did you establish Dragonfly Woodwork? Two years ago. 80

What was your first commission? A sweet chestnut dining room table and two long benches. What type of wood do you prefer to work with and why? I like working with hard woods, rather than soft woods. Hard woods are more durable and long lasting. Which allows me to create pieces that will last for generations. What type of work do you take on? Mainly commissions on interior and exterior furniture. What has been your favourite commission to date? There has been no particular favourite as I thoroughly enjoy everything I do, finding pleasure and love in the uniqueness of each creation.

How far would you travel for a commission? I am fortunate to have my own workshop to work on the commissions, which means nowhere is too far to reach. If someone sees and wants the integrity and craftsmanship of what I can offer, it’s a pleasure to travel to meet them. I am currently working on two projects a fair distance away, with one client being in Holland and the other in the south of France.

You live in a beautiful part of Wales. How does the landscape inspire you? The whole of life inspires me. Wood taught me from a very young age that it needs to be heard; it has a voice in its own silence, guiding the direction of each new creation. Which makes it an honour to work with.

Starting alongside the dawn of the new year, Victoria Bridal opened its doors on the 7th of January in, what is quickly becoming the bridal capitol of England, Ross-on-Wye. We spoke to owner Victoria about her new venture and the reason behind leaving her previous job as a trained NHS nurse.

VICTORIA BRIDAL Is there anything that you’d like the readers of Wye Life to know about Victoria Bridal? We work closely with lots of local businesses from florists and photographers to equipment hire and beauticians, so if a bride is ever feeling a little lost or overwhelmed there is always an excellent service provider that we can recommend and would be happy to be affiliated with.

Hello Victoria, thank you for talking with us. Can you tell us how the idea for Victoria Bridal came about? Before opening the business I worked for a number of years in both the private sector and the NHS as a trained nurse. Whilst that job was very satisfying I felt that it was time for me to try something new and equally as exciting. I have always wanted to be my own boss and particularly enjoy the buzz and excitement that surrounds weddings and bridal wear. With that in mind, my husband and I began brainstorming and discovered that Ross-on-Wye could be a lovely little set up for a bridal boutique, especially considering the outstanding landscape and historic buildings in the town itself and in the surrounding areas. So, we took a deep breath, and here we are! What can brides-to-be expect when entering your shop for the first time? From the moment a bride steps through our doors, our focus is to provide her, and her bridal party, with exceptional service!

“ Each gown should be a reflection of a bride’s personality.”

It is our job to take as much of the stress as possible from their shoulders and make her feel special. We truly believe that each gown should be a reflection of a bride’s personality rather than a symbol of the occasion. We also work closely with a dedicated and skilled seamstress who is able to add, adjust or remove parts of the dress so as to make bespoke to that bride.

Also, I’d just like to mention that the reception and support that we have so far received, not only from local brides, but also from local businesses has been incredible! People have been so kind and welcoming and always wishing us lots of luck, so I’ll just take this opportunity to say thank you to all of those very kind people. My husband will be mortified at this, but I would also like to give him a special mention as without his support and solidarity, none of this would have been possible.

Ross-on-Wye has seen a few bridal boutiques pop up over the last few years, what makes yours different to the rest and why should the brides choose you? Although we are very similar, in many ways, to other bridal boutiques we do have a few quirks. It isn’t essential to make an appointment to view or even try on our gowns, however if absolute privacy and our undivided attention is what you’re after then we do recommend making an appointment. Once you have made one, there are no real time constraints to the length of that appointment as we tend to allocate 2-3 hours for each appointment to ensure that our brides have our full attention throughout their visit. 82

Andy often visits the school and his mission is to inspire, motivate and encourage the children to be more active. Fresh from Rio, Triathlon made its Paralympic debut with the men’s event and Andy, who became a through-knee amputee in 2005 after a bike accident, swam, cycled and ran his way to victory. His aim is to inspire the next generation and his own story is quite remarkable having only took up the Triathlon two years ago. www.andyjlewis.co.uk See St John’s main feature on pages 56 & 57 A B E R G AV E N N Y

After creating Superman inspired jewellery and an unbreakable wedding ring for Laurence Fishburne, Cardiff jewellery designer Neil Rayment really is flying high.

STAR STRUCK What better way to commemorate the cinematic release of Man Of Steel than with a stunning jewellery creation inspired by Superman himself? As a fan of the superhero and friend of the film’s star Laurence Fishburne, award-winning goldsmith Neil Rayment wanted to create an out of the ordinary tribute in the shape of Kal-El’s Crystal - an homage to Superman’s birthplace, a timeless classic, expertly crafted in platinum and diamonds. “I was looking for something spectacular, I’m a huge fan of Superman and the franchise featured heavily in my childhood,” says Neil, owner and artistic director at Advanced Jewel Craft. “What better place to seek inspiration than the birth place of Superman?” Advanced Jewel Craft attracts clientele as sparkling as its bespoke pieces. The iconic brand has slowly blossomed since its inception in 2004 and is now a firm favourite amongst A-listers from LA to Abu Dhabi. Oscar-nominated actor Laurence Fishburne is one of Neil’s most prestigious clients. The pair met when Neil briefly switched jewellerymaking for acting and appeared alongside him in The Matrix sequels. Neil was honoured to be tasked with designing and creating Laurence and his wife Gina Torres’ wedding rings.

VA L E L I F E I N TE RV I E W

One of Hollywood’s real diamonds Laurence kindly took time out of his busy schedule to explain more about his experience of working with Neil. How did your friendship with Neil come about? We worked on The Matrix sequels together. We became friends on set and then I found out that Neil’s passion was for jewellery design. Have you kept in touch? Have you been over to Wales to visit him? Yes we’ve kept up with each other but still have not made it to Wales I’m sorry to say. I’ve heard that it’s a very beautiful country.

Neil designed and made your wedding rings. That’s a high pressure assignment - how was he to work with? He was terrific. The basic design was worked out between Neil and my wife. We’re delighted with the result. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the design? Gina wanted something that would be unbreakable for me. I’m a would-be drummer, so I’m always beating things to hell. The platinum band and three diamonds are all a reflection of my personality and style. How involved were you in the design process? I’m very creative but I really felt it was best to trust both Neil and Gina on this one. It was our first custom jewellery experience. Neil often takes inspiration from films. If you could challenge Neil to design jewellery based on one of your previous films, which would it be? Probably King Of New York. I think that would be an interesting challenge for Neil but one I’m confident he could rise to. Created in his Cardiff Bay studio, Advanced Jewel Craft’s pieces are beautiful and exclusive. Neil adopts a personal approach, forging firm relationships with his customers. And while he works with A-list clients, his feet are firmly on the ground. “Jewellery is something that needs personal attention,” Neil says. “You can get entangled in the glamour, the parties, the shows, but the most rewarding thing is to see someone wearing one of my pieces and the pleasure it brings.”

After considering various local magazines to market the business in I decided to place an ad in both Vale and City Life to promote our wares, the only thing I can say is ‘WOW’. The response I’ve had from both publications has been staggering, literally staggering and now both publications are a permanent marketing expense within our strategy. If you haven’t tried it, you must! Chris Macnamara MD The Brogue Trader When it comes to price, versatility and finish, no other material can match it, which might explain why, for windows, doors and conservatories, aluminium is fast becoming the material of choice for the seriously savvy.

The UK may not be the manufacturing powerhouse it used to be but we still make shoes of exceptional quality. And yes, you pay a little more, but shoes of this quality (if you look after them) can last a lifetime. And you can’t say that about a lot of products these days.

THE LIGHT

FANTASTIC Vellacine have been manufacturing aluminium double glazing windows and conservatories in South Wales since 1978. We spoke to Managing Director, Mark Nayler about the resurgence of aluminium for windows and conservatories.

Vellacine has a solid reputation for supplying uPVC products. Why are you promoting aluminium? Aluminium went out of fashion simply because of problems with heat transfer between glass and frame. However, technological advances over the last ten years have meant that aluminium’s benefits of lightness and strength are making a serious comeback among consumers. We’re definitely noticing more enquiries, with customers asking us to cost a project alongside uPVC.

What are the benefits of aluminium? A warmer house, lower energy bills and less outside noise are just some of the benefits that our aluminium windows bring to the table. Increased security is important to customers. Our superstrong aluminium windows and superior locks help customers feel safer in their homes.

“The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.”

Is aluminium eco-friendly? The materials that we use are environmentally friendly, robust and durable. Our aluminium windows last for years without maintenance.

What about colour? Our aluminium products can be custom-made for each property and come in almost any colour or style. They look great and our designs are highly attractive and certainly improve the look and value of a home. In addition to manufacturing aluminium products of the highest standard, we pride ourselves on the high standard of service we offer. Vellacine customers return to us time after time and most of our work is generated through word of mouth recommendation. We’re extremely proud of that. Why should customers buy aluminium windows and conservatories from Vellacine? They’ll be dealing with a financially strong, well established and highly regarded local company. Vellacine has been around a long time and we provide a fully comprehensive ten year guarantee with all our aluminium windows. As well as a full installation service, Vellacine offer an aluminium window replacement and repair service should any existing aluminium windows be damaged, show misting or just simply need a facelift.
