A New Focus for a New Year Your Horrible Attitude Could be What’s Distracting Your Heavenly Altitude

N

by Kenneth E. Ware

ow that the New Year has emerged, there will be new challenges to face and new choices to make. Last year’s challenges and choices are a thing of the past. What will be your mindset for this year? Life has a way of blurring your focus. With its many distractions and interruptions, if you are not focused, you could very easily get distracted within the first week. Just as a half inch off could divert the alignment of an entire building, one small distraction could deter your focus throughout the rest of the year. I. Focus on Your New Life in Heaven (Rev.21) — There are a number of things that John the apostle saw that would be no more. He saw that the pain, struggles, and sufferings in this life, will no longer be present in the new life in eternity. For instance, he said there will be No More devil (Rev. 20:10), No More sea (Rev. 21:1), No More death (Rev. 21:4), No More mourning, crying, or pain (Rev. 21:4), No More sin/sinners (Rev. 21:8, 27), No More sun and moon (Rev. 21:23), No More night (Rev. 21:25; 22:5), No More temples/worship centers (Rev. 21:22), No More curse (Rev. 22:3). Wow! The things of this life will not transition into your new life in heaven. II. Focus on Your New Home in Heaven (Rev.21:1-2) — Jesus Christ gave a revelation to John as he was banished to the Island of Patmos. In a vision, he saw some things that were not of this world. In his vision, he saw a new home in heaven filled with eternal bliss. The Lord revealed to him a New Heaven, a New Earth, and a New Jerusalem that

6 // January 2018

will be qualitatively different than the current heavens and earth. The New Jerusalem will descend from the new Heaven from God like a beautiful bride walking down the isle to meet her husband. This world is not your home. Your citizenship is in heaven (Phil.3:20-21). Your New Home in eternity will be full of beauty and splendor in all of God’s glory. Of course the New Life and the New Home in Heaven only awaits those, who, by faith, have trusted in the finished work of Jesus Christ. To the believer, like John, you are to set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth (Col.3:1-4). Have a new vision throughout this New Year. Focus on these two things that John received from Jesus Christ. Fix your eyes on Jesus this year. Stay focused on heaven this year.

God Bless You and Have a Happy New Year Kenneth E. Ware, M.M., M.A.B.S., M.Div., Member of Hamilton County Baptist Association and a graduate of Temple Baptist Seminary. He currently serves as senior pastor of New Sholar Avenue Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN, and is a Professor of Theology at Grace Bible Institute.

Our Daily Journey with Life

E

by Samuel Bain

ach day we face what we consider to be life’s difficulties. Our daily journey leads us down the path of right or wrong. What we do with our life is our decision; we can hurt other kids’ feelings at school or we can give another person some of our lunch if they don’t have any. The word goodness is a great example of how we are supposed to live our lives. Being kids we often find ourselves wanting to watch TV or maybe just playing outside, but what we don’t usually do is give other kids compliments about how they look, how athletic they are, or how smart they are. The reason the word goodness is such a valuable word to live our lives by is because it was mentioned in the Bible as a fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Another fruit of the spirit is kindness, but the difference between the two is that goodness is what we show when we stick up for someone who is being bullied, kindness is what we show when we sit with someone at lunch because they don’t have any friends. They are both very important when we are talking about furthering God’s kingdom. However, being good is what we can do every day as kids because we can tell others about Jesus and we can help others in class. Another thing we can do as kids is to have courage in our everyday journey in life. Jesus said he would never leave us but he never said our life would be easy or perfect. We are going to face difficulties but we can choose to have courage and push through with our journey and overcome our problems. Don’t ever think you are too small, you are too young , or you aren’t good enough because Jesus said that we

8 // January 2018

are created in his image and that we are made exactly how he wants us to be; so, we can never be too small or too young and we are always good enough because the same God who created the universe created us. We are always able to do what God tells us and make right decisions and even when we mess up, God still forgives us because he loves us so much that he sent his only child to die on the cross for our sins. He loves us so much that he will forgive us of all our sins because his only son Jesus died for you and me. Making the right decision is more than doing what you think is right; it is doing what God thinks is right. When you don’t know what to do, then think about what Jesus would do because he never sinned. He is the only person who has ever or will ever live and be perfect. We can strive to be like him, although we never will be, because he is the perfect example. In the end, we are all going to make bad decisions but we can give glory to God, ask for forgiveness and we can learn from our mistakes and do exactly what God has called us to do and we can be who God wants us to be. God wants us all to have eternal life in heaven with streets of gold but the only way that we can achieve this is by confessing our sins and believing in our hearts that his son Jesus died for our sins. This is the only way to have eternal life in heaven. So during your daily journey with life make sure that you show goodness. Samuel Bain resides in Cleveland, TN. Gò0dNews for Men

W

A New Year! by Dr. Greg Collins

ith every New Year comes the plan for us to put off the former year and embrace the New Year. It’s that time that comes once a year when we resolve to make changes in everything from how we eat, how we exercise, or even how much we will attend Church in the coming year. Change seems to be the prevailing word that surrounds the New Year’s celebration for most people. The funny thing is, when it comes to men, we are most resistant when it comes to change. As men, we fall prey to our tendencies. For a man to break old habits, it takes a real change in our perception and the way we think. Even if the change would be good for us, change is difficult. As men we often have a hunter/gatherer and provider mentality. We find that any change that doesn’t embrace that side of us, we are resistant to it. Either through fear or the thought of what is manly or not manly, men are resistant to change. Christ reminds us of a change that must take place in every believer. It comes to us from Apostle Paul in the twelfth chapter of the book of Romans. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)

12 // January 2018

When embracing a life in Christ, a change in the way we think, the way we perceive, and the thoughts and attentions of our mind becomes as necessary as breathing itself. It is impossible to be the man or the men God has called us to be, apart from embracing the mind of Christ. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5) Of all the resolutions made during New Year’s, let us, as men, resolve that this year, we will embrace more and more the mind of Christ. It is this mindset in which we will see clearer the call of Christ on our lives. We will also see clearer the mission that Christ sets before us and we will see clearer the needs of others as we walk as Christ did. Recognizing the move of God and the needs of mankind, begs us to see, think, and respond as God does. This is the essential change that we all need, so that we may be instruments used by God and the help that the world needs so that they may see the heart of God lived out through each of us. The heart and the mind of Christ can be summarized by the seventh promise of Promise Keepers. A Promise Keeper is committed to influencing his world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). Change. Go forth. Display the heart and mind of Christ. Dr. Greg Collins, THD, CSL, BRV, spent 22 years Pastoring in WV and GA. From TV and Media Ministry to large venues and crusades, Dr. Collins has ministered the gospel of Christ around the world. Currently serves as a Chaplain for Amedisys Hospice and is a member of Abba’s House Church in Hixson, TN.

It’s Just Around the Corner by Stephanie Young

an you remember the times you were asking directions to a particular location? It may have occurred when you started a new middle or high school and you asked someone where B-225 was. The answer may have been, “Walk down the hallway and it’s just around that corner.” Or maybe you were walking in a new city or town and asked for 54321 Broad Street. The response was, “Walk to the end of this street and it’s just around the corner.” In any of those scenarios, when we arrived at the end of that hallway or that street, we expected our destination to be just around the corner. We trusted that the person giving us the directions would get us to the right door. As we turned that corner, we anticipated finding what we were looking for. Have you ever felt that way in other areas of life (family, job, school, etc.)? Have you been searching and seeking God’s promises that were shared and confirmed to be on the way, “to be just around the corner”? Yet, sometimes you question: am I walking in the right direction because it seems so far away, should I walk faster or run, do I have the correct door/ building number, or should I stay or stop at the first door I see? So, what should you do? Well, I can share that I am currently in this situation: Looking down the hallway towards the next door that God has for me to walk through. But, my anticipation has me asking those previous questions to myself. Am I walking in the right direction? He has blessed me to complete levels of education and experience, and I am confident He has equipped me for the next door. But then I ask: Do I have the correct door number? I am in a “room” and have been for some years now doing some good things. But I see the door to the hallway and am beginning to wonder, should I step out and take a walk? Should I just stay or take a peek at some other doors just a few feet away?

14 // January 2018

The Holy Spirit pulled the questions from my mind and had me dig for what God has shown me time and time again: that word that we pray to have, but don’t really want: patience. Hebrews 10:38 says, “Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.” The questions I asked opened the door to anxiety and frustration, which in turn could lock the door that God intended for me to walk through. Re-reading Hebrews while I “walk through the hallway” of life, helps to cast out those questions and replace them with faith, hope, and endurance. “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.” I choose to believe that whatever He has for me, tomorrow, next month, or next year is in His time and is just around that corner.

Stephanie S. Young, Ed.D., is an educator with 20 years experience in the public and private sector. She has worked in various parts of ministry, but most closely with marriage ministry alongside her husband, Theodore Young Jr. of 20 years. As she completes her doctorate degree this year, she looks forward to what else God has in store.

The Meal that Got Me Married by Avery Hurst

ushi salad, miso soup, and hot tea. The meal that started it all. This was the first meal that I cooked for my husband when we started dating. The moment he walked into my kitchen—before he even took the first bite—he decided he was going to marry me. They say, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Ladies, take this to heart, Ingredients because it is all too true. Sure, Justin and I had an 5 tbs reduced sodium chicken broth powder base or bullion instant connection when we met—sparks flying 12 cups water all over the place. Bed Time by Linda Ray Center

hat should we do when our children cry out in the middle of the night? If they are sick, comfort them. Administer the necessary medicine or call a doctor. Often they feel alone. Another reason could be anxiety from an unfamiliar sound. Instead of reinforcing, “There is nothing in the closet,” or peeping under their bed, consider using a Bible verse, with a personal note. “Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid, for God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake His children.” Kiss them on the forehead, tuck the covers tightly to let them know they are secure. Quoting scriptures, are an excellent way to teach your children to trust God. Teach them early. There is power in the Word of God and victory in the name of Jesus. Always monitor your child, making sure they are not in pain or distress. Referring to the book of Proverbs has many wise quotes such as 22:6 which says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Train your child to trust in God’s truth. Our Heavenly Father wants us to receive the fullness He has for us. God gives us the power to live courageously and fearlessly in this life. Fear is not from God.

Below is an encouraging poem you might enjoy reciting with your child before bedtime. Sleep well and sweet dreams.

God Goes Where I Go I will be strong and courageous, To live in fear is outrageous! In Jesus, I have the victory For the Lord goes with me. No need to be terrified, Of voices that speak a lie! In Jesus, I have the victory My God would never leave me. I will not be afraid Because God made a way Jesus won the victory He will always stick by me!

FEATURED COVER STORY

“FCA was instrumental in my introduction to Christ. Not only was FCA the first time I truly remember learning about who Christ was when I was in middle school, but also FCA played a vital role in my collegiate years as it allowed me to share my faith in a way that made it even more real.” —R.A. Dickey

It was his 400th career major league start garnered during his 15 years so far at baseball’s highest level. Dickey’s career is certainly highlighted by his amazing 2012 season with the New York Mets when he won 20 games, was and All-Star, and won the prestigious National League Cy Young Award given to the league’s top pitcher. At first glance, it might appear that Dickey has it all, attaining the salary and fame that come with being a pitching ace. But R.A. Dickey’s journey in baseball and in life has been filled with trials and obstacles

22 // January 2018

R.A. grew up in the Nashville area in a home that saw

its share of trouble as his father and mother divorced when he was young. Among the many challenges he faced, Dickey detailed in his autobiography “Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity, and the Perfect Knuckleball,” that he suffered sexual abuse as a child at the age of 8 and again at 13. In the confusion and chaos that came with a single parent home and the abuse that he suffered, Dickey found playing sports was a way to cope with daily life. He was also very good at sports and his athletic skill helped him attend Montgomery Bell Academy in Brentwood. At MBA, R.A. developed into an excellent multi-sport athlete and it

Becoming a follower of Christ was the most important decision R.A. would ever make, but believers aren’t immune to the many obstacles life can bring.

College, Olympics and a Surprising Discovery

Dickey earned a scholarship to play baseball at the

What I Should Have Learned

From the Samaritan Woman at the Well

by Pam Turner

I

write this article with a bit of shame and embarrassment. As an educator, I teach the critical importance of celebrating diversity. I speak to businesses about a diverse staff and effects on the bottom line. In my ministry, one of my favorites scripture is Luke 12:31. It reminds us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and there is no commandment higher than this. I am guilty of pre-judging a neighbor. I have a friend that on the surface looks very different than I do; we are of a different race, age group, and gender. I have shared with him in the past that if I had seen him walking on a public street with his long goatee and tattooed extremities, I would have been terrified and would have crossed the road quickly. This hard rockers’ countenance and his empty stare led me to believe that we would never even have a real conversation, let alone be friends. As time has progressed, the outside exterior has given way to a kind, soft gentleman. His hazel eyes that I assumed were full of anger, now convey melancholy and uncertainty. Once I let go of my preconceived notions and behaved like a true Christian, I began to look forward to my conversations with him. Our discussions are scholarly, thought-provoking, and invigorating. He encourages me to broaden my ethnical understanding by introducing me to amazing authors that share my heritage. This man has made a huge effort to understand parts of my culture that were not taught in school text books. How could I have been so wrong and so closed-minded as a Christian? He is so open as I share daily, evidentiary accounts of my Abba Father’s love. He patiently listens as I share the awe of what Christ has done in my life. We do not always agree, but one of our commonalties includes a history of church hurt. For many, this would be an opportunity to discourage religious involvement, but my friend encourages my continued religious involvement. I am reminded of the Gospel of John, and the story of an extraordinary Samaritan. The Jews utterly despised this women’s race of people. She was an outcast and even frowned upon by her people due to her poor choices. The story teaches us that God values each of us enough to actively seek us and as a result of the Samaritan woman’s brief encounter with Jesus, she was changed as well as many of those around her.

24 // January 2018

In my life, it was not my friend’s life that was drastically changed. It was mine. I am so thankful that I met this man as he has left an indelible mark on my life. Jesus crossed racial, religious, and gender barriers and he valued, appreciated, and loved all of the differences. I pray that our friendship is long-lasting and will serve as a constant reminder to be Christ-like. This includes loving all of my neighbors and celebrating their uniqueness. Let’s Rock 2018 for the Glory of God by Amy Wilson

C

“If you scrub your hands of sin and refuse to entertain evil in your home, you’ll be able to face the world unashamed and keep a firm grip on life, guiltless and fearless. You’ll forget your troubles; they’ll be like old, faded photographs. Your world will be washed in sunshine, every shadow dispersed by dayspring. Full of hope, you’ll relax, confident again; you’ll look around, sit back, and take it easy” — Job 11:14-18 MSG

hristmas is over; it’s a brand new year. Welcome to 2018! Now what? School is starting back and it’s a new semester. All that happened the first semester is over and you get a “fresh” start, right? What was that New Year’s Resolution again? Even though it is now 2018, on January 1st when you woke up, life was no different than December 31st. The struggles were still real and the feelings were the same, but it is a new day, a brand new start. Today is the day that we get to choose whom we are going to serve (Joshua 24:15). You have to make a choice! This year we need to think on Job 11:14-18. We need to scrub our hands of sin; we need to refuse to even entertain evil in our homes or lives. What music is it that you need to maybe turn off? What TV shows need to go? Friends? Do these friends lift you up or tear you down? What do you want to change in 2018? Don’t you long to be washed in the sunshine, to be full of hope, to relax and know that God’s got this?

26 // January 2018

Now is the time to put away those things that stood between you and the Lord in 2017. It’s 2018, “Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 MSG. As I close, I want to end with a very familiar verse to most people. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for” (MSG). Today, make a choice that 2018 is going to be different than the past years. Stand tall and know that God’s got this all under control; all He needs from you is for you to be a willing vessel. Whom are you going to choose to serve? Let’s rock 2018 all for the glory of God. Amy Wilson is the Development Director at Teen Challenge Midsouth Adult Center in Chattanooga, TN and served as Youth Pastor for many years in the Cleveland area. She is married with one child and serving both at her local church and serves on the Council for a prison ministry called Kairos.

Independent Living Making the Choice to Move

hy should I leave my beautiful home?” This is a fair and valid question, often asked by older adults when they are considering relocating to an independent living community—also known as a retirement community. Their families also wonder why their parents should move—and professionals who serve older adults and their families may also hear their clients ask them this question, seeking their opinion. In particular, executive directors of independent living communities are often asked to make home visits to answer prospective residents’ and their families’ questions, and to explain the benefits and implications of relocating to an

independent community, along with providing tours of their facilities. These executive directors often become important facilitators of change in the lives of older adults and their families. Moving is commonly recognized as one of life’s major transitions and sources of stress. To answer “why should I leave my beautiful home?”—or at least explore the idea of moving—it helps to know the difference between independent and assisted living, and what some of the benefits of independent community living are, as well as guidelines for making a successful transition into the community. Independent

28 // January 2018

living communities may not be a fit for every older adult because of a variety of factors, but many retirees today owe it to themselves to consider whether living among their age peers would best serve their needs. Independent living communities have multi-faceted potential benefits, and it is important for older adults and their families to educate themselves about this type of community before making a decision. It is helpful first to understand the main distinction between independent living communities and assisted living. That key difference is that independent living communities do not provide its residents assistance with the activities of daily living (ADLs), whereas assisted living communities do provide this help, and may also have a living area set aside especially for residents with dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, who require special care. Social interaction and sense of community: As people age, apart from the weekly Sunday church service or occasional lunch bunch gatherings, older adults tend to spend more time on their own. Self-isolation in many ways becomes selfpreservation. Less social interaction may mean less criticism from others, but it also means less support, less encouragement, and fewer opportunities to share with and confide in others. Independent living communities, on the other hand, encourage social interaction with peers. As with any major life transition, it is essential to gather information and comparison shop before making a decision. One should solicit opinions from family and friends, and search the countless consumer resources available on the internet to get a comprehensive picture of any independent living community under consideration. The results of this research provide a much better position from which to make a decision—whether to age at home or move into a different, but potentially equally compatible and fulfilling living experience. Church Planters Really Do Have All the Funding

H

by Rick Mitchell

aving been involved in several church plants both in the United States and overseas the title of my wife’s new book, Church Planters Have All the Fun(ding)! really intrigued me from the first day I saw it. Planting a new church and seeing the Kingdom of God grow is exciting, but it is also hard and thankless work. Often times, one of the hardest parts of beginning new work is funding the new church. As soon as we have begun a new church overseas the members begin to ask me, my wife, and our co-workers, if we can find them a large church, usually in the United States, to sponsor them. This always means support them. This always pains me. Why can’t those in a new church look to God and themselves to support their new work? Sure, it is hard, but such endeavors are always difficult. I have seen from experience that getting an outside church to support a church plant almost never works. Why? First, outside support builds dependency. The new church gets used to the monthly support which makes it almost impossible to end it. The people will get accustomed to having others support them, and they will not make the sacrifices necessary to see their church grow on its own. Second, external support slows the next generation of church planting, as the next generation of Church Planters wants their support before they will go out and plant a church. After all, why should they and their families suffer to plant a church? They want their money like the first pastor got his before.

30 // January 2018

Finally, the church members may have been told the support for the pastor and church will diminish over so many years, so the people attending the church plant may not fully give as long as they think outside resources are coming in to help the pastor and church. Then, when the money really does begin to diminish, they will not believe their pastor; they may be suspicious that the money is still coming in, but their pastor is keeping it for himself and not telling anyone. However, just as funding a new church is a major problem, there is way to conquer it. Our eight and one-half years in the Philippines showed us that all people have skills. Most all are marketable skills. My wife developed a way to help those in church plants to identify these skills: skills such as cooking, sewing, baking, auto mechanics, electricity, and lots more. She learned the culture and trained the church members to use the skills to make friends, teach the skills, and share the gospel while doing it. Through this ministry they call SHARE Evangelism the first church was planted and funded from the people. Not only this, the income increased their families’ personal income, and they excitedly increased their support to their church. Today these churches are still going and it is a source of pride that they did it through prayer, faith in God and their sharing of their skills. Gò0dNews for Couples Starting The New Year Off With A Spark!

I

by Jason & Amy Carter

t has become tradition to celebrate a new calendar year with parties, toasts, kisses and fireworks. All of these things usher in our hopes and dreams for the upcoming months, especially if the previous year(s) has presented challenges or frustrations. We make resolutions to do or be better than we were before, some we stick to and some we don’t. We don’t really know what the New Year holds, but we are hopeful and enter in with excitement. As you step into 2018, we want to encourage you to rekindle that “spark” with your spouse and resolve to make this your best year of marriage yet.

alone. Watch sports, watch Hallmark movies, hiking, shopping, go to concerts, just have fun together!

Date Regularly — Be intentional about planning time together on a regular basis. It sends the message “You are important and I love spending time with you.” A date doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive; the point is to be together.

Say “I Love You!” — Every. Single. Day. Yes, your spouse may already know that you love them, but there is just something powerful about saying and hearing those words.

Serve One Another — Look for ways to honor and bless each other by helping with even the smallest everyday tasks. You might be surprised at how folding a basket of clothes or doing the dishes can communicate love to your spouse.

Stay Connected — Physically and emotionally. Life gets really busy (especially if you have kids) and you have to make sure you connect with each other, sexually and nonsexually. Take time for pillow talk each night.

Whether you are newly married or have been married for many years, like us, you must be intentional about investing into the relationship every single day. God gives specific instructions in the Bible for how to do that (Ephesians 5:21-33). Here are some practical applications that we have found to be beneficial for creating and sustaining the “spark” in our marriage.

Play Together — Have hobbies or activities that you enjoy together, even if it is not something you like to do

32 // January 2018

These are just a few ideas that we have incorporated over our years of marriage to keep the relationship healthy and thriving. As we enter into a new year, we encourage you to start or keep doing these kinds of things to invest in your relationship. You must be very intentional about these things. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day distractions of life. If you will ignite the spark, maybe you’ll have fireworks all year long! Jason and Amy Carter have been married for twenty four years, and have three children. They are both public educators and have served in various minestry roles over the years. In January 2017 they founded Live and Love Ministries after the tragic loss of their 18 year old daughter. Their mission is to inspire others to live and love well.

New Year’s Resolutions

W

by Patty Lauren Seger

hat a blessing we have been given for a new year to create new memories, pursue new dreams, and enjoy life! For many of us, coming out of the holidays can feel a little bit like coming out of a fog. Our normal routine has probably been shaken up a bit and we have been faced with three dreaded words — New Year’s Resolutions. As a society, we have been conditioned to believe the holidays are a time to let loose with our health because just as quickly as they came and went, we will be presented with a time to redeem ourselves. We share our resolutions with each other partly in hopes to have accountability, but most of us do have good intentions to follow through with our resolutions and often times, health and fitness are at the top of the list. So, where do we go wrong? While the idea of resolutions is good, the chance we will fully commit to a resolution we almost feel pressured by society into making is not likely. We have all seen it - the gym packed full of the “resolutioners” and the fitness classes teeming with new faces and big goals only to see the crowd thin out before the onset of spring. We get discouraged with lack of results or we make resolutions we know we cannot keep long term. Sometimes we simply quit because, let’s face it, it’s not easy to change our old habits and create new ones, especially if they involve moments of unpleasantness. Hebrews 12:11-12 tells us, “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees...” Coming from a background of being overweight and unhealthy, I fell into the resolution trap year after year.

34 // January 2018

It wasn’t until I decide to stop setting resolutions that were so far out of my reach that I finally made lifestyle changes I was able to stick to. Instead of having goals of “I want to lose 15 pounds”, “I need to have abs to be happy”, or “I’m going to only eat green, leafy vegetables”... I set attainable goals that I knew I would commit to and could easily build upon once they were reached. Let’s say one of your New Year’s resolutions was to “go to the gym at 5am every day” — that is an awesome goal, but are you an early riser? If so, then making yourself get up a little earlier to hit the gym is a great idea; however if you hit the snooze button 5 times before your feet hit the floor, it might be time to try another approach. What about utilizing your lunch break for your health hour? Or, going to the gym for an hour after work? Set goals that you can incorporate into your current schedule - this will help create a better long term habit and will enable you to adhere to your plan! Instead of completely ditching that 2-3 soda a day addiction, drop your serving to 1 and gradually remove it completely from your life. Or, allow yourself 1 a week as you work to remove the sugary drink from your dietary intake for good. You will have a better chance of adhering to these small changes over time and therefore enabling you to feel successful in changing your habits. As you begin to see and feel the changes you are making you can be more motivated to increase your goals as you work them into your lifestyle. Your health should be a priority, not an afterthought. Whatever you set your heart and mind to you can achieve! Our bodies are incredibly crafted by our Creator — if you have the gift of an able body, I encourage you to look past just a resolution and transform your lifestyle. The best treatment option for people in need of aortic valve replacement is open-heart surgery, but for those at high risk, opening the heart is too dangerous. Now there is hope; it’s called TAVR or transcatheter aortic valve replacement. With TAVR, a pen-hole sized incision allows a new valve to be inserted through a catheter, providing a less invasive procedure that leads to faster recovery at home. Misunderstood by the World

H

by Andrew Towe

ave you ever felt the sting of accusation or the weight of being misunderstood? You are in good company. Just about everyone greatly used of God was misjudged by man. David is one of my favorite men in the Bible. When I get to heaven, after Jesus, he is the man I will want to meet before anyone else. I love him because he was a worshiper and a warrior. We know that David was the least thought of by his father. He did not feel it necessary for David to even meet the great prophet, Samuel, until all the other brothers were first rejected. David was left in the Shepherd’s field until the Prophet finally asked “Do you have another son?” The Bible clearly paints us the picture of how his brothers misperceived his motives, when he checked on them during the battle with the Philistines. Eliab, his oldest, said “I know the naughtiness of your heart.” Who me? David must have thought. I was following the instructions of my Father to check on you and to bring you blessings from him. Some of you today understand his emotions. “How can you judge my heart or my motives?” Sometimes people choose to not see truth about you. It’s really a

36 // January 2018

Spirit of deception. It is a setup of the enemy to leave you wounded and weak and settling for whatever can numb the ache of pain. We can conclude that this pattern of thought left wounds in David that had him continually running into the hands of a mad man, Saul. He genuinely loved Saul and wanted his acceptance and approval. However, this was not God’s plan. He had something better for David and God has something better for you, too. This longing that he had and the rejection he faced caused David to pursue God even more. My prayer today is that you allow God to break the chains that have you running to and fro, looking for something that only God can fill. If you are misunderstood, rejected, or even hated, it is not about you! It is about the purpose God has for you. The enemy cannot stand that God is madly in love with you. Shake the dust off your feet. Quit chasing after people that don’t see your value. Let them go. Run to God; He is your answer and He knows your worth! Andrew Towe and his wife, Brooke, together pastor Ramp Church Chattanooga. They have one daughter, Giuliana, and are currently expecting a son this fall. Even as Ezekiel was carried out by the spirit to the valley of dry bones, Pastor Andrew has been called to speak the prophetic message of awakening to the Tennessee Valley, raising up an army of believers from the dry scattered bones and equipping them to advance the kingdom of God.

Agin is Harder for Women According to a New Poll

A

by Dr. James White

poll of an estimated 2,000 individuals concluded that men are perceived as “old” five years later than women. Even more, men are considered attractive at an older age. This comes as no surprise to us as recent data confirms a suspicion we have had all along. According to a national poll released by Allure, the aging process is, well, sexist to say the least. Essentially, the visual effects of aging take a greater toll on females than males. For example, the poll found 30 years of age to be the prime aesthetic age for females, whereas 34 years was determined to be the aesthetic prime age for males. While poll participants found gray hair an attractive feature on males—making them appear more “distinguished”—the participants found gray hair on females unflattering and more “extinguished”. “People overwhelmingly said they were concerned about the effects of aging. They were concerned about how it would affect their attractiveness to the opposite sex and particularly with women, how aging would affect their career,” explained the poll director, Kristin Perrotta (nydailynews.com). With the help of advances in cosmetic surgery, women no longer have to feel helplessly imprisoned by their age. Gray hair is easily changed by hair coloration. No matter what the concern, droopy eyes, jowls, or fine lines, there is an effective treatment with new technologies. Even better, cosmetic procedures have

38 // January 2018

become more affordable. With the availability of more non-surgical (more affordable) alternatives like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, laser resurfacing, and dermal injectable fillers, and financing programs specifically for cosmetic procedures, cosmetic surgery is no longer reserved for the rich and famous. In fact, 42 percent of the female poll participants admitted they would consider cosmetic surgery. The taboo is fading. On a more hopeful note, Perrotta expressed, “People did overwhelmingly have a much more positive view towards aging and toward themselves and their look as they grew older” (nydailynews.com). The take home message? Embrace aging-gracefully. Not! Fight it every step of the way. If not for the original sin and fall of Adam, we would have perfect bodies. Aging is part of our fall from grace. It is no wonder that we want to fight the aging process. We want to be in the image of God without aging. I Wait On Thee by James Fickley

Lord, let me grasp the urgency of waiting. I need the stillness of a quiet time with Thee. I’ve come aside to wait on Thee for blessing. To be refreshed with peace, and grace, supplied for me. Lord, let me wait, until you give direction. Free from demands of voices to be heard. For only Your timing is perfection. Help me to wait and listen, guided by Your word. Help me refrain from hurrying to action. Because I know You’re never, ever, late. Keep me from rushing just to finish a transaction. Therefore assist me Lord, to come aside, and wait. All my tomorrows are as absolutes before Thee. No single happening can alter what You will. Refresh my heart, to wait until You call me. I want to rest in Thee, assist me to be still. I’ve come to know that time’s well spent in waiting. “Be still and know that I AM God,” You’ve said. I trust by faith, that waiting is a blessing. So help me wait, until I know, You’ve led.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

God’s Sustaining Hope in Sorrow

uddenly, life changes as we who remain see those we love pass from this life to life eternal. Yet, my life suddenly changed as my precious son Victor prepared to leave that morning in October. I stopped him, put my arms around his broad shoulders, and began to pray for him as I daily did. After praying, I kissed Victor’s bearded cheek and hugged him tightly, telling him that I loved him. He kissed my cheek and said; Mom, I love you too. Suddenly, without notice, on that day my life changed forever on October 11, 2010 as my Heavenly Father called my son to his eternal home. Yet, our God is Faithful (I Corinthians 1:9a). Yes! With tears flowing we can trust our great God, our Abba Father to carry us in the journey of sorrow and He will carry us until the tidal wave of grief passes over and until our very last breath. Yet, for the believer we do grieve, but we grief not as the world. For we have “Hope” that sustains the heart that grieves for our Heavenly Father never leaves His children to grieve alone (Hebrew 13:5b). In the journey of grief, God will enable us to be strengthened and have “Hope” as He comforts us in our season of grief. One may cry out, I cannot move on, yet we cannot move on without the faithful Father gently carrying and lovingly reminding us that He is there and

sees every tear that falls from a tear stained face. You are not alone, dear one in the sorrow of your heart for our God, Jehovah Rapha is the Healer of broken hearts. You are not alone, dear one. Remember the tidal of grieve will not overtake you and leave you in despair. Our God Reigns! Rejoice, oh you saints! Our Redeemer lives, and we too will one day reign with Him for eternity never to depart. We will reign with Him in the wonderful presence of His peace and grace. Surely, there will be no more tears or sorrow; there will forever be peace and joy, and we will reign with our Heavenly Father forever more! Rejoice, oh you saints, for our Redeemer lives! Yet, precious one, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, please repent of your sins (John 10:9-10) and receive Him today as your Lord and Savior. Ask Jesus Christ to forgive you of your sins believing in your heart that He died for your sins and rose again that you would have eternal life; asking Jesus Christ to become your Lord and Savior (John 3:16). Allow Jesus Christ to rule over your life (Gal. 2:20); He will do amazing things in your life.
