Consider The Lilies

by Leslie Bennett

While singing in a youth choir at the church I grew up in, one of my favorite songs was called “Consider the Lilies.” The lyrics are posted below: Consider the lilies, they don’t toil nor spin. But there’s not a king with more splendor than them. Consider the sparrows, they don’t plant nor sow,

But they’re fed by the Master who watches them grow. We have a Heavenly Father above, With eyes full of mercy and a heart full of love. He really cares when your head is bowed low. Consider the lilies and then you will know. May I introduce you to this friend of mine, Who hangs out the stars, tells the sun when to shine. And kisses the flowers each morning with dew,

But He’s not too busy to care about you.

I feel sure the writer based his lyrics on Luke 12:27-28: “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!”

The word “consider” means to think about and be drawn toward. When we are struggling with needs, whether they be emotional, physical, financial, or spiritual, we are encouraged to “think about and be drawn toward” the beauty of the lily. God created the lily and provides the necessary elements in order for it to grow and bloom so beautifully. This should cause our faith in God to blossom! If He provides so wonderfully for the lilies of the field, how could we ever doubt that He will provide exactly what we need?

“My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). God knows our needs, even before we petition Him, and He promises to provide for ALL our needs “according to His riches in glory.” This verse speaks to me literally. My Father will not be half-hearted or skimpy with His provisions, but He will provide extravagantly for me! Isn’t that comforting to know?
