Birds of a Feather Fly Together

If you’re an avid bird watcher like me, then you’re likely to be constantly amazed at God’s beautiful handiwork. I can stand for hours in front of my kitchen window, looking at the colorful hues of our feathered friends feasting from our bird feeders.
Just the other day, our front yard was filled with dozens of male American robins competing for a spot on the feeders. We have two woodpeckers who
frequent our feeders regularly. Their red-crested heads send me an immediate signal that they’ve arrived. I keep the National Audubon Field Guide to North American Birds within hands reach in case I spot a bird I’ve never seen before.
February is National Bird Feeding Month and, rumor has it, if you feed them, they will come! Midwinter is a tough time for backyard birds. Snow often covers their food sources while, at the same time, food supplies are dwindling. A reliable, highenergy supply of birdseed is essential to provide the energy our backyard birds need to survive the longlasting, extreme cold in February.
The Bible contains many references to birds. In the book of Genesis, we read, “…. Then God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind...’” (1:20). In the book of Psalms, the unknown author writes, “…The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches…” (104:12). And, in the book of Job, we read, “…But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air and they will tell you…. Which of all these does not know in the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind...” (12:7-10). One of my favorite Bible verses was given to me by Ms. Anita and references a bird. I valued it so much, I laminated it and, to this day, carry it with me in my daily journal: “…I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore, be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves…” (Matthew 10:16).
I understand bird watching isn’t for everyone, but I guarantee if you purchase a feeder and some bird feed, your backyard birds will entertain and reward you. Hang the feeder in a strategic location where it can easily be seen from the comfort of your chair or sofa, and be mesmerized by God’s wonderful handiwork!
