Reggie White, a Chattanooga native, Tennessee Volunteer, and NFL Hall of Fame inductee died on December 26, 2004, at the age of forty-three. How did the “Minister of Defense,” a gifted athlete and young man, pass away so quickly? White died of cardiac arrhythmia, with sleep apnea being the underlying cause. His wife, Sara, later revealed that his CPAP machine was unused next to the bed. Reggie White, though, is not alone. Thirty-four percent of patients with obstructive sleep apnea are unable to tolerate CPAP treatment, and many give up because they are unaware of other choices, such as oral appliance therapy. Dr. Drew Shabo, DDS, has also lost two young and, by all accounts, healthy friends to sleep apnea that went undiagnosed. “Those deaths were such a shock, and I was surprised to learn that so many young and seemingly healthy people were dying from an easily treatable condition!” says Dr. Shabo. Rest Assured was born in January 2020 in Cleveland, TN, after a voyage of research into alternative treatments for sleep apnea. Rest Assured solely offers oral appliance therapy to treat snoring and sleep apnea.

Undiagnosed sleep apnea affects one out of every five adults. We often disregard the symptoms as natural side effects of stress or aging due to today’s lifestyles, which are not favorable to excellent sleep. Fatigue or excessive drowsiness is the most prevalent symptom of sleep apnea in adults. Snoring is another sign. Other typical OSA symptoms include coughing or gasping, dry mouth, difficulty falling or staying asleep, morning headache, and mood, memory, or concentration problems. Sleep apnea raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. Blood pressure and blood sugar levels rise as a result. It also causes weight gain and/or trouble reducing weight by slowing the metabolism. Most importantly, apnea has an impact on quality of life. Speak to your doctor if any of these signs and symptoms sound familiar. Sleep apnea testing is now available in the comfort of your home. If you don’t have a physician, Rest Assured has teamed with SleepTest.com to provide patients with telemedicine consultations with board-certified sleep experts as well as home sleep testing.

The gold standard for sleep apnea treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which is typically first-line treatment. If you are using CPAP every night and getting good results, stick with it. “However, if you are unable to use CPAP and have not sought treatment for your sleep apnea, please, please, please contact us. It might save your life,” said Dr. Shabo.

Rest Assured offers completely free in-office consultations. To determine the optimum device for each individual, we review sleep tests and medical history, perform a short oral evaluation, and listen to the patient’s preferences. After that, an impression of the patient’s teeth and bite is obtained and submitted to the lab, where a device is custom milled to match the patient’s specific needs.

Successful sleep apnea treatment necessitates an individualized strategy, which we endeavor to give every patient. Most health insurance programs, including Medicare, cover these devices as medical equipment. However, deductibles, copay and coinsurance, and terms of your plan will vary. Rest Assured strives to optimize insurance reimbursement while minimizing out-ofpocket expenses. We offer a considerable self-pay/cash discount, special rates through CareCredit, and in-house financing to make this treatment affordable to as many people as possible.

Reggie White’s football career, during which he set records and garnered several awards and accolades, is difficult to forget. His charitable efforts, as well as his devotion to his faith, family, and community, will be remembered. Regrettably, his untimely death will now be a part of his legacy as well. Sara White formed the Reggie White Sleep Disorders Research and Education Foundation in 2006 to support research, improve education, and distribute CPAP equipment to those who would not otherwise have access to it.
