One in four women are continuing to use bacteriainfested make-up over four years old, according to a study by The College of Optometrists.

SUGABABES SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT They've been through their fare share of drama over the last few months,losing original member Keisha and rumours of Amelle being kidnapped. Thankfully the trio, which now includes Jade Ewen, are still around to explain it all. Is a girl band that's seen four different line-ups in 12 years, and now contains none of its original members, still the same group? As you might imagine, the Sugababes are emphatic with their answer. "We never thought for a second that we should change our name," says Amelle Berrabah, who became a Sugababe after original member Mutya Buena's departure in 2005. "It honestly never crossed my mind. When I think of original members, I always see Heidi [Range] as one anyway, she's been in the band eight years now." "I was in the band with Mutya for four years, and Amelle has been in the band four-and-a-half," says Heidi, who joined the band when Siobhan Donaghy 'went to the toilet and never came back' while on tour in Japan in 2001.

member down and their future in doubt, Heidi and Amelle could do nothing but sit tight in an LA hotel and weigh up their options. Meanwhile, back in London, Sugababes's management company, Crown, were busy trying to find a replacement. That's where Jade Ewen comes in. Before Crown Management came knocking, Jade was trying to get her solo career going. As she admits herself, it was proving difficult, with the dreaded Eurovision Song Contest acting like a weight around her neck.

The latest drama in the Sugababes's story began back in September. Rumours arose that Amelle had left the band, citing working difficulties and exhaustion as the reasons. Newspapers then ran stories claiming she hadn't been seen for days and was presumed kidnapped. Of course, this wasn't true. "That story made me laugh so much," Amelle says. "I just did one and turned my phone off," she says.

"If it wasn't for Eurovision, no one would know who I was," says Jade, candidly. "But at the same time, I couldn't get in magazines or on the radio because of Eurovision, so it was a double-edged sword really." Fortunately for her, Team Sugababes saw past that - she did come fifth in 2009, after all, the highest British placing for seven years - and invited her to join the band. "At first I'd said there was no way I wanted to be in a band, because I'd been in a girl band before where I was the youngest of three girls, it was such hard work and we didn't get anywhere," says Jade. "Management said 'I know it's on the spot, but if you want to be in Sugababes, the girls are out in LA now and they were supposed to have shot the video yesterday. They're out there, but there's no band'. So I said yes, without really knowing what to expect - at that point I didn't even know who I was replacing, as far as I knew Amelle was still missing.�

Former Eurovision contestant Jade Ewen was then mooted as a possible replacement for Amelle and the show would go on. Within days of an announcement about Amelle leaving, however, another followed saying it was in fact founding member Keisha Buchannan who was leaving the band apparently due to her bullying. Using her Twitter page to defend herself, Keisha stated no bullying had taken place, and her leaving was the result of a "break down in communications". Speaking to Heidi and Amelle, it sounds a little more serious than that.

There then followed a tentative meeting where the girls were introduced to see if they'd get on. Heidi and Amelle insist they thought Jade was right from that initial chat, but feared she might get cold feet.

"For a good year, me and Heidi weren't happy and it just got harder and harder," explains Amelle. "And it wasn't just us, there are other people tthat we see every day that were finding it difficult too."

"Our manager had a chat with Jade on her own after we'd all met," says Amelle. "Heidi and I were hoping that if she didn't want to join, she'd say then and could just leave quietly."

Throughout the conversation, they never explicitly say what Keisha used to do that was so bad, although there are hints at dramatic mood swings, difficult, obstinate behaviour and deliberately being late to make things difficult for others involved. As things came to head, both Heidi and Amelle decided enough was enough and quit the band.

Two quick rehearsals later and Jade had filmed a video as part of Sugababes, and shortly afterwards went on holiday to Barbados with her two new friends.

"Keisha wasn't kicked out," says Heidi, defensively. "We left, and while we were waiting to find out whether we'd still got jobs - we didn't know what the label were going to do, get two new girls in or whatever - people we worked with told us they were about to leave as well because they couldn't cope with the situation either."

"We have all got so close these last few months especially, and we have lots of fun," says Amelle. "We're all just so much happier.�

"We weren't happy, but it was a massive decision to leave, it was a massive risk," adds Amelle. "We love what we do, but it got to the point where it had to change." "Life's too short to go through it, to live through that on a daily basis," concludes Heidi, sagely. "No one would go to work like that." If kidnap plots and ever-changing members weren't dramatic enough, they're nothing compared to what happened in the aftermath of Keisha's departure. As she left, the girls were due to fly out to America to film a video. A band

We stood at the bar and ordered a drink whilst taking in the feel of the place. Attentive Bright, modern and fresh with the feeling of a Efficient traditional country pub. The restaurant area is spacious very comfortable and filled with old country charm. Tucked away in one corner of the bar is a large screen so you don’t need to miss a game. The other end of the bar is a dart board, and there is a nice little beer garden. When we sat down to dine the restaurant staff looked after us really well. By no means intrusive, but just enough attention so you don’t feel forgotten. We had a starter, main and desert, along with drinks. Everything was cooked really well and for the size of our portions you would have expected to pay more than we did. I had a 16oz Steak with proper home made chips and peas that tasted like they had just been picked. My steak almost covered the whole plate with the chips and peas placed on top. I love my steaks quite rare and really enjoyed this one.

Tackling Childhood Obesity News that there has been dramatic rise in the number of children on anti-obesity drugs has worried health campaigners. It seems many parents are using pills to solve the problem, happy to let their kids snack on junk food rather than the real thing. We talk to experts about childhood obesity.

It may be a relief to send your children back to school, but it's vital that you keep a close eye on their health - especially their diet. Kids' poor eating habits, such as snacking between lessons, have made the headlines yet again, raising concerns about whether enough is being done to tackle childhood obesity in the UK. Campaigners and medical experts fear parents and communities are not facing the issue head-on, with reports claiming healthy food options are still being overlooked. Almost all children's lunchboxes contain unhealthy snacks, according to a study conducted by mySupermarket.co.uk which is aimed at urging parents to re-think their child's diet and go for healthier options. The School Lunchbox Nutrition study found that 93% of lunchboxes contained either a fun-size chocolate bar, biscuits or a slice of cake on a daily basis. Crisps featured in 50% of children's packed lunches, while 60% of parents chose white bread over brown for sandwiches.

Few make the connection between unhealthy weight and long-term health problems. "A lot of us do not know the difference between an overweight child and an obese child," explains Lowdon."This can be determined by using the Body Mass Index (BMI) which calculates body fat by measuring the height and weight of a person." A healthy BMI for adults is considered to be between

Obesity? 18.6 and 24.9, but it's important to remember that children's weight and height will fluctuate as they undergo growth spurts. Healthcare charities such as The National Obesity Forum fear parents are losing control over their children's eating habits.

Being obese or overweight increases the risk of a range of diseases that can lower life expectancy, including type-two diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. In the 10 years until 2005, the proportion of obese children aged two to 15 increased from 10.9% to 18% in boys, and from 12% to 18.1% in girls, according to a survey by the Department of Health. If current trends continue, it's estimated that a fifth of boys and a third of girls will be obese by 2020, the Health Survey For England concluded. As children are continuously growing, weight gain is often dismissed by parents as 'puppyfat'. “Parents are finding it hard to spot the health problem, as childhood obesity is now becoming the 'norm'," says Jacqui Lowdon, Paediatric Dietician for the British

The Forum claims parents are buying food that is not nutritionally balanced due to a lack of regulations in the food industry. And pocket money seems to be fuelling the problem also, with kids skipping breakfast at home and buying snacks en route to school, according to a report by Kellogg's. "Obesity has increased due to the change in times. Lifestyles have changed - people use cars rather than walk, food choice is excessive and readily available," Lowdon explains. "Lack of activity can also determine weight increase. If energy input is greater than energy output then this is where problems arise." Over the years, changes to farming practices and food production have led to increased consumption of high energy food and convenience foods, laden with saturated fat, salt and sugar, causing higher obesity rates, according to the Department of Health.

Childhood obesity can be genetic, so if you have problems with your weight, you may hand them down to your children, Lowdon warns. "There are increased chances that if the parents are overweight, the child's risk of obesity is higher."

Obesity not only affects a child's appearance, but it can also lead to serious health implications later in life. The trend of weight problems in children is a particular cause for concern because of evidence suggesting a 'conveyor-belt' effect in which excess weight in childhood continues into adulthood, says the Department of Health. Children suffering from severe weight gain will often also experience mental health problems. "The psychological problems a child goes through can be just as tormenting," says Lowdon. "A parent may see their child's behaviour change, such as low self-esteem, which may be down to not being as fit as other kids in the playground - at worst they can be a target of bullying."

Some parents are turning to anti-obesity drugs to combat the problem, but health organisation NICE warns that such treatment should only be considered after dietary, exercise and behavioural approaches. Drugs are usually not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Parents are also being advised to rethink their child's sedentary habits. With PCs, computer games and TV programmes readily available in the homes, it's easy for kids to lose focus and become lazy. Government schemes around the country are attempting to combat obesity by introducing breakfast clubs at schools, so kids do not miss out on their nutrients. Change4Life (www.nhs.uk/change4life) is an initiative for families to educate themselves and learn more about the 'five a day' vegetable and fruit intake and discover healthier eating options.

Other schemes say that at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day should be undertaken by children. As much as there is temptation for your little ones, there is also support in the form of health visitors, school nurses, practice nurses or GPs, who will be able to provide a d v i c e a n d information on weight management.

A

lthough it has played a vital and glorious role in the history of Europe for four centuries, the elegant city of Vienna has never been as easy to visit as it is now. I have yearned to go there, and the 60th anniversary of The Third Man, the famous Carol Reed film starring Orson Welles as Harry Lime, was an obvious time to do so. Modern-day Vienna works pretty efficiently. After a flight of less than two hours, the fast CAT train whisked me into the city. When you get there, remember to buy the very useful 72-hour Vienna Card for 18.50 euros (ÂŁ16.60). This provides unlimited free travel by underground, bus and tram plus 210 discounts at museums, sights,theatres, concerts, shops and restaurants. As I avoid taxis on principle, I navigated the city's underground system, which can be complex. Viennese people are generally helpful - all spoke some English and I can manage basic German - but it took a while to reach my destination. This was Das Tyrol, a small luxury hotel conveniently situated just off the main shopping street, the Mariahilferstrasse, and almost next door to the Museum Quarter with its beautiful old buildings and art galleries. My small but comfortable room, with its film-star bathroom, had striking modern decor and proved completely sound-proof - a rare luxury in hotels. The hotel serves an excellent breakfast and gives courteous, efficient service. It is one of the best small hotels I have stayed in. For a day of sightseeing, I had a personal Englishspeaking Austrian guide in order to learn far more than if I had been on my own or gone around in a group. To my delight, I found that my guide, Gerhard Strassgschwandtner, is the creator of an amazing museum in Vienna about The Third Man, which was filmed during the Allied occupation. Our walking tour through the old city centre gave me a closer look at the buildings near the Museum Quarter, which captivated me when I went exploring on that first evening. This part of the city, including former royal stables to the nearby Hofburg Imperial Palace, has been converted into one of the world's largest museum complexes. Our visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, commissioned by the Habsburg royal family to house their collections, was a highlight of my trip. I could have spent an entire day there. The building's magnificent interior is in itself a baroque work of art, and its huge collection of paintings is one of the finest in the world with works by Raphael, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velazquez, Titian and Durer - and the largest batch of Bruegels anywhere in the world. The 600-year-old Habsburg dynasty's contribution to the arts, culture and sciences was great, and their architectural heritage lives on in Vienna. I found that most of the exquisite stuccoed buildings are not as old as they appear, but the result of a massive rebuilding of Vienna in the mid-19th century, a project directed by Emperor Franz Josef. We walked on to the imposing former Hofburg Palace - the winter home of the Habsburgs - and beautiful St Stephen's Cathedral, with parts dating to the 12th century. After lunch I visited Gerard's museum of fascinating Third Man memorabilia, which started off as his personal collection but grew so

Several generations have been intrigued by this iconic film, in which American racketeer Harry Lime gets his comeuppance while fleeing police through the sewers. Its haunting theme music was played by a Viennese man, Anton Karas, on a stringed device called a zither, and the original instrument is one of the museum's exhibits along with posters, cinema programs from more than 30 countries, 90 different editions of the novella by Graham Greene on which his screenplay was based, and photographs of occupied Vienna and the making of the movie. The transformation in so many areas since then is impressive. Around the museum in Naschmarkt, the seedy buildings of Greene's day have given way to elegant cafes and smart fruit-and-veg stalls. Next time I will stay longer. Despite those turbulent years of the 20th century, Vienna's legendary romantic charms are as alluring as ever. Gerard's museum of fascinating Third Man memorabilia, which started off as his personal collection but grew so large that he opened it to the public a few years ago. Several generations have been intrigued by this iconic film, in which American racketeer Harry Lime gets his comeuppance while fleeing police through the sewers. Its haunting theme music was played by a Viennese man, Anton Karas, on a stringed device called a zither, and the original instrument is one of the museum's exhibits along with posters, cinema programs from more than 30 countries, 90 different editions of the novella by Graham Greene on which his screenplay was based, and photographs of occupied Vienna and the making of the movie. The transformation in so many areas since then is impressive. Around the museum in Naschmarkt, the seedy buildings of Greene's day have given way to elegant cafes and smart fruit-and-veg stalls. Mr and Miss Burns In the early 1960's a small lodge ( since converted into a decent house) stood on the Colton road, at whose gate, given suitable weather, an elderly woman would stand and nod neutrally should I smile while cycling by.

The Landor

Came the day when J C Price, the Bellamour farmer, corralled willing hands to organize steam rallies and other events in the adjoining field. We dragged an old caravan to the site, parked it near her cottage, and thus did I come to know Miss Burns and her brother who lived with her. Within days of our meeting she had revealed herself as the quiet, kind soul she truly was. “You can use that,” she said, pointing to a well- insulated tap outside her door, “but be careful- it's our water supply.” Their cottage had no plumbing gas or electricity. A Tilley lamp lit the living room; otherwise it was candles, and a coal range for cooking. Mr Burns used carbide lamps on his sturdy old roadster bicycle the last man I ever knew to do so. One could say they lived frugally. But they were not puritans. Mr Burns liked his ale, and it may have been a contributing cause, when, in his seventies, he fell into the fire and was fatally injured. Miss Burns's tipple was stout. She might often be seen, armed with her American cloth bag, fetching Guinness from the Greyhound.

Society

Years later, when she could not cope alone, she went into a retirement home at Stretton, near Burton- on Trent. I had reason to visit her there, finding her (and she'd not mind me saying this) sprucer than I ever remembered her. Her dress was crisply fresh, her attractive white hair washed and combed, her smile untarnished. We sat in her bedroom, which was in effect a one-room en suite flat, and talked. And talked. “We come and go as we please,” she said, as she saw me off at the gate, “I'm not going to ask you about the cottage. There's an off licence down the bank, so I know where to go for the needful!” On which happy note we parted. Mr and Miss Burns merited a column in the chronicles of this old town and now they've got it.

High levels of stress deplete the body of essential nutrients and can cause symptoms like headaches, indigestion, irritability and joint pain. You need: 2oz (50g) celery, 2oz (50g) fennel, 4oz (125g) Romaine lettuce, 6oz (175g) pineapple and 1tsp chopped tarragon. Whiz in a blender with two ice cubes. Serve in a tall glass, and decorate with tarragon sprigs if desired. GMTV's Dr Hilary Jones suggests soaking up some sun for a dose of essential Vitamin D. "Sunlight's one of the best natural sources of Vitamin D - the happy vitamin - and without it our bodies cannot process calcium properly, which is vital to maintain healthy bones and teeth," he says. Around 20% of adults are thought to be deficient in vitamin D and osteoporosis, the brittle bone disease, affects one in two older women. Try to get 15 to 20 minutes sun exposure on arms and face, three of four times a week to build up Vitamin D. Avoid the risk of burning in the middle of the day - catch those rays in the early morning and late afternoon. Taking control of your diet doesn't mean you have to suffer hunger pangs or feel deprived. Cook from scratch rather than relying on processed foods. That way you know exactly what's going into your food, and it's easier to keep the fat, salt and sugar content under control, and be sure food's additive free. It needn't be time consuming - buy ingredients in bulk, make meals in batches and freeze them - this could also save you money. Keep fruit and vegetables handy for snacks, as they're packed with vitamins, and low in fat and calories. Eat moderate amounts of good fats - the unsaturated fats and oils found in olive oil, nuts, seeds and oily fish (such as salmon, fresh tuna, pilchards and mackerel). Eat fibre-rich food - such as wholegrains wholemeal bread, brown pasta, brown rice, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds, fruit and veg.

Unemployment could hit 3 million by mid-summer, says the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) - partly because of rising inflation and the rise in VAT. Mortgages - use low interest rates to overpay your mortgage, while 'interest only' borrowers who switch to capital repayment terms with their current lender may be surprised by savings in the long-term. 2. Get the cheapest loan - Nationwide BS thinks many consumers with debts spread across credit and store cards, overdrafts and loans could make a big saving by consolidating the debts into its new personal loans costing a typical 7.6% APR on £7,500 -£14,999 for up to five years, the rate being fixed for the full term of the loan. 3. Credit cards - if you can get your current card debts accepted for a 0% balance transfer deal, there's a case for cutting the card up at once as you pay down the debt to ensure you don't make new purchases, possibly charged at 16% upwards. 4. Be a careful shopper - write down what you actually need before entering the supermarket, and you can easily save £20 per week and avoid food waste, says Andrew Hagger at Moneynet.co.uk. 5. Home and motor insurance - comparison site Gocompare.com reckons a potential 21 million drivers are missing out on cheaper cover. Also, only 19% of consumers switched their home insurer in the last year. 6. Claim all available benefits - if family income is less than £40,000 and both partners work 16-hours a week plus, you're eligible for childcare tax credits worth hundreds of pounds towards the cost of childcare, assuming the carer is registered with Ofsted. I t h a s been some time since Mini could claim to have the market cornered for trendy city cars boasting both style and substance, but the fashionable high-streets currently dominated by the ever-expanding Mini range, the Alfa Romeo Mito and the smaller but all-conquering Fiat 500 are about to become even more lively with the arrival of the Citroen DS3. When a production model resembles its concept predecessor so closely it is a sure sign that the manufacturer is about to try something new. With the C3 updated for the new decade and the recent arrival of the practical but creatively styled C3 Picasso taking care of the volume compact hatchback and compact MPV sector, the DS3 is a new attempt to break into the premium compact hatchback sector with a stylish, well-equipped and generally more luxurious model. At first glance, Citroen appears to have cracked it. There are bold styling gestures that may or may not be immediately liked and that may or may not grow on car-buyers over time, but as a package the DS3 is every bit as attractive and arguably more forward thinking in its design than its rivals. Unlike some of the competition the DS3 is not a modern take on past glories. Attempting to be a design classic in its own right, the model can hardly be accused of trading on its name either. Car historians and Citroen fanatics may raise an eyebrow at the rekindling of the DS moniker, but the French manufacturer is not claiming the DS3 is a modern interpretation of the fifties style icon. The DS4 and DS5 models that will follow shortly will make no such claims, either. The intention of the DS sub (or uber) brand is visible in the lack of Citroen chevrons on the rear. A special DS badge takes their place, marking the DS line-up out as a range in its own right. That said, the visual similarities to the Citroen C3 are present inside and out, but DS3 customers can expect a far greater degree of customisation from their cars. Citroen has retooled its factory especially to deal with two-tone bodywork and roof decals of the DS3.

be specifi ed in a range of colours and shapely interior panels are soft to touch and lined with more exuberant materials. Patterned carpets, coloured seat inlays and dashes of chrome add to the upmarket feel. Recessed dials are complimented with internally lit needles that jump into life when the engine starts. With the range-topping 154bhp turbocharged petrol engine drivers will also be met with an appealing, sporty exhaust note. The engine, the result of a partnership between Peugeot, Citroen and BMW proves well suited to the DS3 in 150 THP form, making the car feel far keener than the Citroen C3. The crisp gear change and responsive, well-weighted steering help, too. The suspension is firm and the DS3 can be chucked into bends with confidence, but it's also damped to deal with rougher surfaces even on the DSport model's 17-inch wheels. As a compromise between city driving and the open road it's hard to fault. The DS3 shouldn't prove a struggle to live with, either. The boot is very accommodating and, while the three-door body naturally restricts access to the rear, it will suit for two adult over shorter journeys. The chunky B-pillar may spoil their view somewhat, but visibility from the driver's seat is very good and the front passenger benefits from a recessed glove compartment that allows extra legroom. Three trim levels - DSport, DStyle, DSign - are available dependant on engine choice and there are enough customisation opportunities to give the DS3 a truly bespoke feel. A 99g/km CO2 emitting model should also attract attention from fashionable city car fans. Tax-free status could be as appealing as the floating roof and LED running lamps. It is more than adequately equipped to tackle the competitive but lucrative premium small car segment in the styling stakes, but the DS3's enjoyable driving experience and neat packaging give it more than just high street chic.
