INTERVIEW

ERROL DOUGLAS At the end of last year, Good Salon Guide was proud to launch the Black Hair Excellence award – the latest in our range of special awards. The award recognises the diversity of our industry and the immense talent that exists in working with black hair. The Errol Douglas Salon, which opened in Belgravia in 1998, was the first salon to receive the award and here Errol Douglas MBE tells us why it was so important for his business and a little more about his incredible career.

24

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

GOOD SALON GUIDE

25

Why is having a Black Hair Excellence Award important for the industry? It is great that the Good Salon Guide have added a Black Hair Excellence Award. Salons throughout the UK do so much to meet the demands of their diverse clientele.

What difference will the award make to you, your team, and your salon? Since we opened in 1998, we have become an all-inclusive salon, one of the first – and to be honest still one of the few that can, hand on heart – provide a full hairdressing service to all clients/all hair textures with the utmost confidence.

As a long-standing Good Salon Guide member what benefits have your derived from membership? We’ve always prided ourselves on maintaining our position as one of the best London salons. This endorsement reflects that not only to us, but to our many clients.

In December you won Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year, what did winning this award for a second time mean to you? It was an amazing surprise. I’ve always absolutely loved the Fellowship of British Hairdressing, what it stands for and what it offers the up-and-coming hairdresser. To be pitched as their ‘Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year’ not once, but twice is an honour and confirms my commitment to them in the guise of a mentor.

26

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

How do you think the industry has coped with perhaps it’s toughest year ever caused by the global pandemic? We’ve lost some incredible talent which is the saddest most awful thing. It’s been a survival of the fittest – the most difficult time for all of us – especially London – which is still in recovery and will be for some time.

What lessons do you think can be learnt from the pandemic and how should the hair industry be evolving? To be thankful. To be able to conduct a meeting without being there. To learn to live life in the slow lane, yet still creating fast fixes. It’s made the majority appreciate our teams, their wellbeing – and trying wherever possible to introduce a whole new way of working in terms of incorporating both work and play. A new balance. Throughout the pandemic I stayed in contact with everyone ensuring their wellbeing and mental health was good, it was vital as a born communicator, and to be honest, human contact and camaraderie was what I worried about and missed the most.

You’ve had a long and successful career – can you share some of your highlights? Ahh there are too many! Obviously most recently being awarded Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year was great, prior to that to win International Hairdresser of the Year in 2021 was awesome! Reeling back a little further to be awarded an MBE by HM The Queen certainly figures somewhere near the top. I love to educate, love undertaking shows – and can’t even explain the feeling when I’m on stage educating a large international audience – wherever I am in the world – I totally love that feeling of sharing, giving, and inspiring.

Why do you think young people should choose to go into our industry? I don’t think it still gets enough support from the careers sector. What a fabulous industry – who would choose not to? What industry can you go into where you can train and become an accomplished hairdresser and take your tool – your pair of scissors with you and be able to translate your skillset/creativity in any country in the world? You will never meet a poor hairdresser – it’s a skillset for life and the opportunities are boundless. I’ve just launched the Errol Douglas Club – a mentoring programme to young adults for that very reason – to show them how to open the avenues and many paths that a hairdresser can follow.

What advice would you give to anyone beginning their journey as a hairdresser? You have got to do your homework and work with a company that produces the kind of work that you would like to do long term. A salon with an education focus – it can be a small salon or large group – but the owners/directors must have an education programme in place and be just as keen to see you shine as you are.

What are your goals for this year both in terms of your business and the industry in general? To get Errol Douglas London back running on an even keel again – never will we be able to recover our losses but there’s no looking back. Likewise for fellow salon owners – if we’ve come this far, we can do it – we are all slowly recovering and getting back on our feet. The whole ‘working from home’ hasn’t helped the London based salons, but as I write this everyone is due back imminently so we will soon see a change. Personally, I’m really advocating ‘texture’ and enjoying working with the consumer press as brand ambassador for Living Proof. My mentoring programme Errol Douglas Club launched in February, and I just can’t wait to get on a plane… also my EDL range is coming soon too!

FRONTLINESTYLE HAIR & BEAUTY

FRANCES URWIN It is with great sadness we must announce the passing of Frances Urwin, owner of Frontlinestyle Hair & Beauty in Bath and Wells, Somerset.

68

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

Frontlinestyle has been a permanent fixture in the Wells high street for over 40 years, opened by Frances and her father, Mr Francis - a talented hairdresser who already had several salons in Bristol. From the start Frances strove to do something different, to think outside the box and to deliver not only modern, up-to-the-minute hairstyles, strong colouring work but also initiate a focus on hair loss and wig work. Outstanding customer care and training was a key part of Frontlinestyle’s business culture. Her reputation quickly grew and included premises in Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area. In time, the portfolio increased to six salons adding beauty salons to the company offering and in 1986 a full retail perfumery was added to the Wells salon and then onto Bath, where she opened her first salon in the city in 2003, a beautiful Grade II listed building on Monmouth Street. From humble beginnings, Frontlinestyle is now one of the significant players in the West Country hairdressing and beauty industry working closely with Wella and some of the best in the industry, including: Mark Blake, Charlie Taylor, and Michael Douglas. Frances was delighted to be able to support several charities, including Children with Cancer UK, NSPCC, Cancer research, Break Through Breast Cancer and, more locally, Children’s Hospice Southwest and the Forever Friends appeal for the RUH in Bath & their work which resulted in a state-of-the-art new premature baby unit. Through Frances’ dedication to training and experience her talented stylists and therapists have participated in industry competitions, including the renowned Wella ‘Trend Vision’, and over the years the business has been recognised nationally, winning awards in customer service, retail, and marketing. Frontlinestyle remains very much a family business and a company of opportunity. Now in its third generation, Frances’ children will continue to move the business forward having been part of the business all their lives. They will strive to encourage new ways of delivering and maintaining a successful business, as well as recognising and developing their team. Frances will be much missed and dearly loved by all who knew her. 4-5 Monmouth Street Bath, Somerset BA1 2AJ

Hair: Scott Frazer-Halsey @ Clipso Salons

With a heritage spanning over four decades, the Clipso group of salons have retained its status as a forerunner in the world of British hairdressing. With four successful salons situated throughout Hertfordshire, its flagship Watford is the group’s founding salon. Leading the way are Scott Frazer-Halsey and Steve Hamberger – who together are responsible for steering the salon group through so many successes. All Clipso salons enjoy spacious interiors which have been the focus of numerous updates and reinventions over the years to cater for the ever-changing demands of salon life. The ambiance of each of the salons, also based in St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, and Cheshunt, are designed to be happy, fun, and relaxing – although the antithesis of clinical, they want clients to feel welcomed. All guests are provided with a freshly laundered gown, folded, and bagged especially for them, and complimentary drinks from lattes and hot chocolate to soft drinks, wine, and beer - taking their refreshments seriously with no ‘hidden extras’.

GOOD SALON GUIDE

83

Each Clipso salon prides itself in offering its locals five-star hairdressing teamed with the attention to detail, personalised service, and friendly ambience from being based in a close-knit community. Scott Frazer-Halsey told Good Salon Guide: “Clipso are the definition of a local salon. The group was created four decades ago by Terry Calvert, a local Watford boy, and we have remained in the area, winning award after award. 95% of our team are local to their salon and know their clients well. We all continuously fundraise for a cause local to us.” Throughout the company Clipso are incredibly lucky to have an amazingly loyal, consistent, and talented workforce, many over seven years. It’s a policy that Clipso respect each one of their team members, from day one pairing them up with a more experienced member of the team, allowing them to be nurtured as they assist and share their skills and interests. Steven Hamberger adds: “It’s like raising your own family – it’s important to us at Clipso that our team enjoy the same closeness and respect for each other, and that same willingness to cooperate in good times and bad. Our team is loyal and committed and the longevity of their Clipso careers has created a bond that is honest, genuine, and completely organic.” Clipso’s exacting standards are second to none, which means clients can put their faith in them to provide a five-star service every time. Professionalism is more about fulfilling this promise – it’s about creating a feeling – and everything they do is focussed on making the client feel great. Scott adds: “Professionalism isn’t just about how we look or talk, it’s about how we make the client feel when we are talking to them – we want them to smile and laugh and feel the centre of our attention – because they are! Professionalism is not about beautiful surroundings but how we make the client feel when they are in those surroundings. An appointment with Clipso is not just about an amazing cut and colour, but how did we make you feel during the process? Professionalism is not just about the shiny bits we see in social media – it is about the feeling our clients have having been to one of our salons.” 57 Queens Road, Watford, WD17 2QN
