of what makes summer, well, the summer. With all of the food that is available to your taste buds, it is important to know which food are not only good, but good for you. Healthy Food lets you in on some healthy and very tasty alternatives to some of your favorite summer comfort foods. These treats will surly leave you with happy taste buds, as well as, a happy body. July is also a month to travel. There is nothing like spending a beautiful summer abroad. Exploring new places, meeting new people, creating great memories is what the summer is all about and Quebec City is the place to do it. This French Canadian tourist hot spot has a little bit of everything. Food, fashion, night places to relax during the spots, and beautiful day; our neighbors to the north have what any jet setter needs to have a fabulously memorable summer vacation.

You’ve probably noticed the hot honeys in the Sports Illustrated catalogs and on the Victoria’s Secret website sporting sexy hairstyles that look ideal for the beach. These dos are not only hot for summer, but they’re quite easy to do, especially considering the fabulous outcome. Here are some looks for your locks that are quick, but provide amazing results. Trying braiding your hair. No, you don’t want to braid your hair so that you resemble Pippy Longstockings. Instead, try braiding a few strands toward the front of your head. Basically, these braids should for outline your face. You’ve probably seen women walking on the beach or even in magazines sporting a loose curl look that appears disheveled, but sexy at the time. This look is actually quite simple to achieve and can be done while you sleep. After you get out of the shower towel-dry your hair, so it isn’t sopping wet. Once you’ve done this, separate your hair into large braids. For most people, about four braids work

the best. However, you may need to adjust the number of braids if you have thicker or thinner hair, or depending on the size you made the braids. Once you’ve braided your hair, go to bed. Yes, that’s right, go to bed and sleep. While your sleeping, your hair will dry, and when you wake up, all that you must do is remove the ponytail holders from the ends of your hair, and use your fingers to untangle any spots that are a little messy. Generally, you’ll want to pass on the hair products because hairspray, gel and other substances will create a processed look that doesn’t shout, “beachy hair.”

A sophisticated bun can be your ticket to looking chic, sophisticated and stunning on the beach without much fuss. Use a brush to smooth out your hair and pull it back in a perfect bun. For this style, you’ll want to use some shine spray to finish it off with. ■

Floral Headbands

With summer in full bloom, what is a better accessory than a flower or two? The floral trend is no longer limited to summer sundresses and shorts, they can also be found in hair accessories. Adding a floral headband or clip is an easy way to spruce up your summer hairdo. We talked to Naomi Alpert, owner and maker of AndBloom online store about her flower hairband accessories: Taylor Romine: What materials do you use when making the headbands? Naomi Alpert: To make my flower headbands, I use real suede cord, wooden beads and specially treated paper flowers. TR: Specially treated flowers? NA: Yes, they are handmade in Thailand and they come in various colors and sizes. Since they are treated they are strong enough to last a long time. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just as strong as plastic but they look much better; almost real! (Or that is what people have been telling me). TR:

Summer is here and we are bored with our hair. To get some tips from a pro, I interviewed the San Diego stylist Jet Rhys, owner of Jet Rhys Salon in San Diego. When I asked if a client were to come into her salon asking for the latest trends for summer, she said they all seem to be looking for a summer hair color to look like they were on the beach and getting sun to create a natural summer glow. “There is a new technique called balayage (as seen on Sarah Jessica Parker). It allows you to add a pop of color without

Jet suggests we should put ourselves on a hot tool hair diet. “Ban your blow dryer during the beach season to make your life easier and hair healthier!” Another solution for styling hair during summer is braids because they add an abundant amount of texture to hair, and minimize frizz. Jet recommends trying to braid hair when it is slightly damp before bedtime and undo it in the morning for controlled, beachy waves.

As far as colors go, Jet notes the ombre trend and its sister, the balayage. “Temporary pastel tones on ombre, especially on blondes, looks really cool and is perfect for summertime.” She suggests colors such as bubble gum pink, baby blue, and lavender, but mentions that colors mostly come in brights. According to Jet, you can make temporary colors as bright or as diluted as you want, but not by simply watering it down. She says, “I experimented with making the colors more pastel by adding conditioner, since it is a white-based, and it worked!” It is easy and fun to add the temporary color to your hair, but she recommends applying the color to dry hair, because if the hair is wet the color will wash right down the drain, and applying the color with your fingers to completely saturate your hair. She adds, “just leave it in to dry until the next time you shampoo.” This look is especially great for platinum and bleach blondes

looking too bright or too freshly done,” says Jet. She adds that it looks great on most lengths of hair and can be used on virtually all hair colors as well. “As far as a summer cut, everyone is in need of a good, healthy trim after the dry months of winter, and especially for the beach-goers with crispy ends.” Any San Diegan can relate when Jet addresses the summer heat: “We want our hair off our necks and to embrace our natural hair texture.” Having to blow-dry hair during the summer months is dreaded

(as seen on Lauren Conrad). “You can put the color around your face and at the nape of your neck, in addition to your ends, for a peek-a-boo of color,” says Jet.

With the resort 2013 designer collections coming out recently, we see stylists use anything from basic middle-parts, to sleek up-dos with long ponys, to hair that hasn’t been touched. Jet notes that the runway will always be a source of inspiration for her, but that she does not take it all too literally. “Runway hair is just like fashion: always over the top. There are a few levels beyond what we do on a daily basis and many clients will not wear runway hair.” However, she seems to find a compromise amid the extremes; instead of an all-over crimp, maybe Jet will style big, loopy waves, or instead of a super asymmetrical bob, she will bring it down a few notches. “Hair and fashion keep evolving; they both live on the seasons. Stylists have to create new hair trends just like designers have to create their trends, hand in hand.” As clients, we love the everchanging industries because it allows us to express our individuality, and have fun with it. Among Jet’s favorite designers are Marni, Suno, and Proenza Schouler. She loves all the shapes, patterns, and pops of color from all three. Summer is here and people tend to want to experiment more with their appearances, especially their hair. So I asked Jet if there is anything she has wanted to experiment with this summer. Although she likes the ombre trend, she is beginning to get bored with the monotonous dark-brown-to-blonde look. “I want to find a redhead model/client and make an extreme version of the ombre.” Since redheads, cool as they are, usually have only one color, she wants to recreatea flame starting with a deep auburn or vibrant red and ending with a bright orange.

As far as a haircut goes, she admires what she has been seeing on the streets lately. One such look is girls with long hair that hits either the collar-bone or shoulders, but with a shaved patch above their ear. When the hair is let down, it is less noticeable, but when in a side pony, it is very cute. “To dress it up,” Jet notes, “you can braid a section of hair above the shaved area to add a cool element of surprise (as seen on Alice Dellal). It’s like long hair on steroids!” Other ideas for long hair are high ballerina buns (as seen on Kate Bosworth), and short bangs above the eyebrows (as seen on Amy Paffrath). Now that the secrets are exposed, go out there and show your individuality through your hair. It’s summer! ■

Eyelashes: How to be a

Dramatic eyelashes have long been the hallmark of femininity—and for good reason—nothing is more seductive than gorgeously lidded bedroom eyes. Eyelash curlers and our favorite tube of mascara help; however, a plethora of alternative lash treatments have been popping up everywhere. Eyelash perms, dye-jobs, Latisse, and even extensions are de rigueur, but I still tear up thinking about the glue/dye/ needle-wielding aesthetician hovering above my peepers. In a quest to achieve the most flutter-packed lashes (without resorting to prescriptions), we’ve scoured the spots for the best, longest-lasting (think weeks, not days) and most importantly, safest treatments. We’ve lined up some great suggestions for lash-o-nistas, check them out here!

Latisse Eyelash Treatment

Latisse is an eyelash treatment FDA approved to grow lashes. The average cost of this treatment is $124, often lasting for approximately three months. The substance carries an active ingredient called bimatoprost proven to successfully grow lashes. Bimatoprost was originally used as an eye drop treatment for glaucoma. However, it has proven to lengthen the life cycle of lashes, as well as the length of lashes. Therefore it is now used for cosmetic purposes, as well. The product must be applied daily to the upper area of the eyelashes. The time frame for results is expected to be between four to eight weeks.

LiLash Eyelash Conditioner Lilash is a product designed to repair broken or brittle lashes, costing approximately $140. It is expected to give women healthier looking lashes, as well as longer lashes. However, one active ingredient in this product is called Phenoxyethanol. While this ingredient may help strengthen lashes, it can also be very irritating to the eyes. This is why it’s important that the product is applied very carefully. Many Lilash reviews have suggested using this product, including reviews listed on Eyelash Growth, as it has shown results in as little as 2 weeks. However, it is suggested that individuals do not expect results for 4-6 weeks.

Eyelash Extensions Eyelash extensions are a semi-permanent way to increase the length of lashes instantly. Each lash is applied to the individual’s real lash, one at a time. If cared for properly, the lashes can last for 60-90 days; however, it’s often necessary to get touch ups every 2-3 weeks. The cost for eyelash extensions range between $250600, depending on where a person goes for the treatment. Then the additional touch-ups often cost $75-250.

Eyelash Implants Eyelash implants were originally only used for patients with burns or congenital defects. The technique is similar to scalp transplants, except the hair is applied to the eyelids. This is the most expensive eyelash treatment available. The cost is approximately $3,000 per eyelid. The eyelashes will have the same texture as the hair the individual has on her scalp--curly, straight or frizzy--and must be trimmed regularly because the hair grows in the same way it did on the scalp. ■

It’s summertime, the season of half-clothed and sun kissed bodies. It is also a time where people take their eating habits into consideration so they can show off their bikini bods. So it is time to put down those potato chips and choose a healthier alternative. First off, one of the best things you can do for your body is drink lots of water. It keeps your skin clear, gives you energy, and helps you not over eat. As most people know, you are supposed to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. But what some don’t know is that if you drink a glass of water before you eat it can help you maintain a healthy portion size. It is also common to confuse hunger with when you are dehydrated, so if you ever feel hungry drink some water first. Simple steps like these can guarantee a better feeling body in no time.

A constantly criticized snack is the favorite American treat: French fries. While cooked in the right oil at the right temperature it isn’t too bad for you, but it will leave you hungry in a very short period of time with few nutrients to benefit. A better alternative and a recent cooking fad are sweet potato fries. They are full of fiber and have tons of flavor, being a great substitute for the usual greasiness.

What is better to go with those fries than a creamy milkshake? Wrong. It provides little to no nutrition, fat, and unneeded sugar. A better alternative would be a fruit smoothie. Although it has a lot of sugar, you are getting health benefits from the fruit while fixing your craving for sweetness. If made at home, the sugar intake can be considerably lower than at café’s or eateries. Many of the cravings that you get on a daily basis are really your body telling you that you need certain vitamins and minerals. As a general rule, it is much better if you go for natural foods instead of processed snacks that have few nutrients in them. It is ok to occasionally have the unhealthier foods, but try to have them as an occasional treat.

Another constantly craved salty snack is popcorn. Fortunately, there is a great and unexpected alternative. Air popped popcorn! It is a great source of fiber, and very low in calories. With a healthier butter alternative that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drown the popcorn, it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very bad for you. Use pepper or some other spice instead of salt to reduce the sodium intake.

For a sweeter alternative, Greek yogurt with fruit is a great way to go. Compared to regular yogurt, Greek has twice the protein and very low sugar. Add ing fruit gives it that extra flavor that is a favorite with

yogurt while adding extra nutrients. Beware of the fat content though. Unless you get a low fat or fat free version, it can have a very high level of fat per serving. Even with that, it is a good snack or even a part of a healthy breakfast. Overall, the slightest of food changes can have a big impact on your health. â&#x2013;

4th of July Survival Guide By Adrianne Miller

Tips on getting through the holiday fabulously. We all know that with the summer comes the always fun holiday, the 4th of July. A day celebrating this nation’s independence with grilling good food, music, family and friends, beautiful weather, and maybe even some fireworks! It is not uncommon for the festivities to start in the morning and go late into the evening and withal that activity it is easy to become overwhelmed quickly. To prevent over doing it this 4th of July here are a few tips to get you through. • Have a Plan o It is always a good idea to plan your day out as best you can before heading out. Knowing where you’re going and for how long you think you’ll be there is a great way to get the most out of the day. This also will let you know if you have any room to add and event or two into your schedule. •

Dress Comfortably o You know it’s going to be hot. But how hot and for how long? It is always a good idea to check the weather before heading out, that way you can pick an outfit that is as cute as it is comfortable.

• Proper Covering o It’s hot and that means short sleeves, shorts, skirts, bathing suits, the works. With so much skin making an appearance it is important to make sure that it is protected. Apply sun screen to keep from damaging that beautiful skin. Hats are also a great way to add a little extra protection. • Stay Hydrated o It is always important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Even with all of the fruity and festive drinks that will be at your figure tips all day long, take some time out to drink some H2O. With the combination of heat, sugar (juices, and drink mixes contain high amounts of sugar), and alcohol will cause the body to dehydrate which may lead to cutting your day short. • Be Responsible o With all of the good food available, it is only fitting to have an equally good drink to wash it all down and for some of use that drink is mixed with alcohol. It is always a good idea to have a designated driver in your entourage. No one wants sum up their holiday with “I got a D.U.I for the 4th of July”. • Have Fun o Don’t spend too much worrying, just go and enjoy yourself. Sample the food, dance, meet someone new. It is always important to create exciting and fun memories so use this 4th of July to do just that! ■

Designer Spotlight: Charles Threatt III By Solomon Are bowties making a comeback? Perhaps bowties never left. Recently while doing a field study at a few of Southern California’s hottest local nightclubs I put my bowtie resurgence theory to the test. Accompanied by my fellow researcher in crime, lets say the Watson to my Sherlock Holmes, him wearing a bowtie, and myself wearing a good old-fashioned, yet trendy tie, decided to mix it up at some popular nightspots to see what trends or lack there of we could uncover. While some of the details of our research may have been lost in some of the liquid we were consuming to ‘blend in’, the results were still very conclusive; the bowtie proved to be an attention grabbing magnet, while the traditional neck tie that was supposed to be my conversation starting accessory wound up in this Sherlock’s pocket while Watson wound up receiving a few extra merits for his research methods; elementary indeed. Local Designer Charles Threatt III is ahead of a budding trend that is once again placing the always interesting bowtie back in fashion’s dare to be cool light leading to a r e s u rg e n c e in wearing this once very popular a c c e s s o r y. CT3 is welcoming back an old friend in the bowtie and has managed to generate a successful niche for this once very popular accessory by creating a fashionable and trendy bowtie line that features a wide range of exclusive bowtie creations equipped with a plethora of design options consisting of a multitude of colors, patterns, and shapes that make this customizable line one to look out for. The bowtie has been hiding in plain sight, CT3 is here to help usher this clever and stylish accessory back to the forefront of most formal/informal gatherings. The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine and Bowtie designer Charles Threat III What is your company name? Company name is CT3. It’s basically my initials. I am Charles James Threatt III. When I was thinking about a name for my bowtie line, a few of my friends threw out the idea of CT3. They said they thought it sounded like a fresh and unique clothing line name. My good friend Jerry said, ”Hey, have you checked out the new line by CT3.” I liked it and

it sort of caught fire. How long have you been designing bowties? I have been designing bow ties since September 2011. How did you get your start designing bowties? I started designing bowties because I have always loved dressing up on Friday. I called it “Fresh or Fancy Fridays.” A few people from Point Loma Nazarene University enjoyed the idea and decided they were going to join me in dressing fancy. Once the guys started dressing up, I felt that the simplicity of a normal tie did not quite suit the fancy-ness I was going for and thought perhaps bowties. I went to Nordstrom’s and thought, their prices were way over board. I decided that I could make my own bowtie, how hard could it be? I found some left over fabric from an old curtain in my house, and it was a hit. Do you have an inspiration that got you into the world of fashion and design? I have always loved fashion and design, however, when I was young, my father told me that fashion is a hobby and that I would need to get a real job that would provide for my family. I gave up for a few years and found that a big part of what makes me happy is creating things with my hands and dressing up. Fashion is in me. I have seen your work and love your bowties, as a matter of fact, I think that bowties are not worn often enough…how do you come up with the designs that you use for your bowties?

As much as I would like to take credit for all the design, I can not at all. I have a dear family friend, Polly Wright, who has three children and wanted to make some clothes and fun household things. I went to her house and she showed me some of her fabric that she created on spoonflower (a fabric printing website) and asked if I would like her leftovers. Not wanting them to go to waste I took all that scraps that she had and made bowties. I started wearing them at PLNU (Point Loma Nazarene University) and people became immediately fascinated with them and wanted to know if I could design them. Basically I have an amazing friend who designs my fabric and I make bowties. You can see some of her work on spoonflower under the name of Luluhoo. Who all is involved in the bowtie creation process? Do you have a team? My team is Polly Wright the fabric designer and myself, the seller and maker. I ask Polly if she can make a design brought to me from someone, and if she cannot, I do my best to design it myself. I do not have the same “creative juices” that Polly has, but mine do work out and customers have always been satisfied What advice do you have for a designer or someone new to fashion that is interested in starting their own business? I would encourage anyone who wants to start their own business or is new to fashion to not be afraid to do what they are passionate about. Also, remember that bringing things back from the past with a fresh and new style to them is not something to shy away from. You have to be willing to wear and represent your product day in and day out if you expect or want someone to do the same. Where can people go to check out your bowties? Website, Etc. ? A bow tie is for everyone who understands there are times for regular ties but there are also times to step up your game and bring out something that most people are afraid to do. Are you located in San Diego? I am located in the wonderful Golden Hill near Downtown San Diego.

Do you offer anything other than bowties? I have just begun a line of hair bows for women. Basically it is the same material and fabric choice but with a hair clip instead of a neck strap. I also make children bowties. What is next for Charles Threatt? Next thing I am doing is working on meeting with a few stores to see if they would be interested in selling CT3 bowties and bows. Attempting to spread the world across the US and then possibly Western Europe. Quick answer, bowtie or skinny tie? I would say a bowtie would always be a conversation starter over a skinny tie. You’re more likely to turn heads with a fresh customized bowtie than a skinny tie. Juuussst checking. Thanks for bringing bowties back Charles, any last words before I let you get back to your creative endeavors, shout outs…? I just want to make sure people know what I exactly do. I allow people to send me things that they like ex: bikes; red; white, and then Polly or myself, creates a design with those specs. Then they can choose the fabric whether it is silk, cotton, ext., and I have it sent to myself where I then make the bowtie/bow. The only other thing I need from the customer is neck size if it is a bow tie and payment. Simple customized bowtie/bow to fit their personality. A customized bowtie/bow to fit your everyday style. Makeup: How to apply the Fresh, Sexy Smoke filled Eye By: Mariah Honey

With makeup artists whipping up looks that ranged from grungy to glam with the smokey eye- why can’t you? The smoky eye is the best option for getting that mesmerizing, smoldering look—but its biggest draw just might be its variability from sexy bedroom time to walking the red carpet: The smoky eye can be kept night-shift-dark and edgy or softened up using lighter, less severe shades. Here are the doable steps to try the fresh, sexy look of the smoky eye for yourself:

1. Prep eyes. Concealer can be used to cover up under-eye circles or just the bluish discoloration just under your inner eye. To cover dark undereye circles, apply three dots of concealer under each eye. Start at the inner corner where skin tends to be darkest, then under the pupil and the third on the outer edge. Pat until it disappears. 2. Apply foundation to lid. Eye base is the secret to keeping your shadow in place for hours. Without properly priming your lid first, your eyeshadow will likely end up a greasy line in your crease. 3. Line with eyeliner. Dark eyeshadows work great as eyeliners. Wet a slanted brush, then dip in a dark eyeshadow. Line eyes as close to the upper lashes as possible from the inner corner to the outer corner. Follow with liner on bottom eyes, but only line from the middle of the eye out. Smudge the bottom line with a Q-tip or your finger. You don’t want a prominent line. To start a smokey eye, use a brush to pat in a dark eyeshadow along the upper lid and below the lid. You don’t want a stark line, instead you want to blend it so it’s “smear-y.” 4. Apply eyeshadow. It’s great to use a three-toned shadow and build from lids to brow. Allowing them to blend into each other like a rainbow is gorgeous. It is one of the go-to tricks of makeup artist Lauren Blanco. Start with a light color that almost matches your lid. Sweep the color across the lid and up to your browbone. Follow with a medium color across your lid only. Build on this with a darker color in the crease. Blend the colors well. 5. Highlight your eyes. Focusing on the inner part of the eye-put a little of your lightest eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eye will brighten it significantly (this is the makeup artist’s secret and I use this trick all the time). I usually dab a finger into my lightest eyeshadow and then I press it into the inner corner of my eye where the upper lid meets the bottom lid. This totally makes eyes “pop.” 6. Highlight your brow. Take the same light eyeshadow and dab it on your browbone, concentrating on your mid-brow outward. Blend with your finger. I like to use MAC pigment just below my brow and just above it, but any super light shadow will work just fine. 7. Lash time. Stick on your lash strips. An eyelash curler will make even long lashes look more gorgeous. For added effect, you can heat the curler under a blowdryer for a couple seconds. Test curler before applying to lashes because you could burn yourself. Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes and wiggle back and forth. Follow with another few sweeps of the wand. Apply to bottom lashes as well.

In the entertainment world there are people known as a triple threat. This title infers that they are not just good, but talented in three areas of the arts which are usually dancing, singing and acting. To date this person is Jennifer Lopez. She is everywhere. A much beloved host on American Idol, she is also an actress, singer, dancer and fashion designer. This makes her a multiple threat.

Sameerah Corporal - I am a self-taught designer. I first learned to sew through a colleague at the university where I worked. I then began taking sewing lessons at a local adult college. Most of my knowledge has been acquired through research and private lessons. I started as an accessory designer of rings and earrings and have had the opportunity to run my own on-line boutique as well.

In the world of fashion there are those who aspire to do one thing well. Their wish may be to design clothing or jewelry or hats or shoes or even handbags. To be able to do one of these is a talent, while more is an accomplishment. One of the designers for Fashion Week San Diego(FWSD), does just that. Her name is Sameerah Corporal and her company is SYCcollection. She designs jewelry, shoes and will be debuting her women’s wear collection at FWSD in October.

T.G.M With no formal training it sounds as though you knew that practice and study were important tools. Who or what inspired your interest for fashion?

The G.O.O.D.S. magazine – Tell us about meerah. What is your background?

S.C. I have always loved designing and making things. I began designing jewelry for myself because I could never find the exact style of things I wanted in stores, or they were extremely expensive. As I began wearing my own designs, people would inquire about where they could buy them. As people continued to show interest I began designing for others. As the

response grew, I expanded. I began with rings and earrings, and then moved on to shoes. I’m so excited because at fashion week I will be showing my first women’s wear collection. T.G.M. You are and have been very busy promoting your collection. This being said, how do you describe your style?

Week SD runway show in Oct. Also, I will be working on expanding the sale of the women’s wear line across the US and to other countries. SYCcollection accessories have been sold in many states and different countries, so I will be working on the same success for the new clothing line.

S.C. My fashion is basically minimalist American sportswear, with small statement accents. I enjoy pieces that are feminine which 20 years into the future will become coveted vintage pieces.

T.G.M. You are one talented designer who doesn’t need to choose one thing to focus on. You do many things well. S.C. Thank you. I’m glad it is obvious that I love what I do.

T.G.M. You have experience in this business, so why FWSD?

T.G.M.

S.C I want to be a part of Fashion Week San Diego for a few different reasons. One reason is for the challenge. I’ve been a part of different runway shows but nothing this grand. Fashion week will also be a great platform for me to launch my first full collection of women’s clothing. And last, but not least, is that the experience is inspiring. To be able to work with other creative people, along with the FWSD team, on what will be such a grand opportunity is something that keeps me going in this business. It keeps the love I have for what I do fresh and inspired! T.G.M. Keeping things fresh is important in this industry, and change is a necessity. How do you plan to expand your business?

T.G.M. It sounds as though you aspire to not only be successful, but to mentor as your colleague at the university mentored you. The GOODS Magazine and WOW! by dezi v. The GOODS Magazine: Before we talk about your new company, WOW, by dezi v., can you tell me a little about how you got your start in the world of Beauty? Dezi: Well I actually started working in a salon during my Junior year in high school in an apprenticeship program and fell in love with the salon business. I worked part time in a salon, and taught ballroom dance as well, so I saw all the beauty of both industries and knew I wanted to be part of both the business world, and entertainment side. Norma: I started as a receptionist at a salon, with a lot of talented hairdressers, after watching their work on a daily basis I fell in love and knew I wanted to go to beauty school. Beauty school was definitely not easy, I remember it being long and stressful doing rollersets and perms was not fun but I made it through and the real fun started once I got my foot in a real Salon! GOODS Mag: I can see that you have been involved with

Dezi: I truly love it all! That is why I love what I do….it is always new and changing. I think working with Endi films was one of my favs, because it was a new medium for me, and HD has changed the rules for makeup for sure. I learned so much seeing my work on film versus photos. The biggest challenge has been fine tuning makeup in HD for Mature women. They have what I like to call Love & Life lines that can be tricky…..

GOODS Mag: For people with your combined experience in the beauty industry working with so many different clients, can you give me your definition of beauty? (deep, I know)  Dezi: I don’t have a specific definition, I know its corny but I truly believe everyone has something beautiful about them. My job is to find what it is and bring it out! A sparkle in their eye, or a beautiful pouty lip, or even bone structure that I can enhance….its all beautiful to me! Norma: What Dez said! J I feel the same way. GOODS Mag: Who are you inspirations? Dezi: I am inspired by people everyday that WOW works with from the photographers, to the models and other stylist, but a few well known artists whose work I admire are Troy Jensen, Fiona Stiles, Billy B and the people of YouTube are very inspiring to me. New artists are great because they are fearless, and not stuck in any ruts yet too… Norma: Vidal Sassoon has always been a huge inspiration for me; he was an amazing artist and changed the world of

GOODS Mag: Lets talk about your new company WOW by dezi v. which I am told offers On-site Hair and Make-up Artistry, what are some of the specific aspects that your business specializes in? Dezi: We do it all! And On Site! We do more than hair and makeup, we also do our BEAUTY BASH…which is a party of sorts, where we teach a group of ladies how to do their hair and makeup using their own products, and styling tools. We show them step-by-step and have them do it themselves so they actually remember how to do it the next day. It’s a ton of fun, and very catered to each group. We also specialize in Bridal. We have over 30 something combined years of experience doing brides. We come to them to make their day stress free and enjoyable. We cater to all size bridal parties and are always on time, professional, and fun! We have just branched out to the bodybuilding world, and do hair and makeup for their competitions from here to Vegas. We also have been doing some amazing Creative Beauty Photo shoots, where we do a before, and after of several different looks which is taking off! Women get the chance to see themselves look like the cover of a magazine! They love it…. GOODS Mag: WOW! So WOW! by dezi v. seems like a one-stop-shop for beauty, who are the members of team WOW that make your services possible? Dezi: Well Norma and I are the founders, and we have a Master Esthetician that works with us as well as other freelance hair and makeup artists depending on the project…As we grow, so does our team. GOODS Mag: What is your favorite part of the beautifying process? Dezi: I love the Eyes! It makes such a huge difference in a person when you make them pop! A lot of women don’t know how to make them stand out the right way, or are afraid of makeup…”It comes off I tell them, but if you don’t play around to see what you may like, or don’t step out of your comfort zone you will never know.” Norma: Styling…It makes such an impact when you have a finished look. Even if it’s a simple ponytail, just make sure its polished. GOODS Mag: Do you prefer hair or make-up? Dezi: I love both, but some days I love makeup just a Bit more! Norma: Hair, I love the transformation of doing a Full head of Extensions on someone who has fine thin hair and watching their face when I turn my chair around and they see their new look! GOODS Mag: Who does your company service? Dezi: We service everyone…We are very diverse, we do all ethnicities, men, children, young, mature…whoever will let us get our hands on them

Dezi: We do book weddings a year in advance, as well as specific projects. So its always best to call us ASAP. GOODS Mag: If you could give the readers of the GOODS magazine three beauty tips what would they be? Dezi: For me I say pick out a look in a magazine you like and just try to create it the best you can, you may have to try several times. I have to tweak them to my features, but don’t give up. 2nd LASHES! I wear them all the time and love them!!! They make a huge difference on everyone…even if you have hardly and other makeup on, you still look amazing with lashes on.. 3rd A good set of makeup brushes, it makes all the difference. I don’t leave home without them! Norma: Learn how to use a round brush versus a flat iron. You get a smoother look with volume, and a good blowdry will last you 2 days. 2nd Dry shampoo for those who get oily scalp, it will perk your roots right up. 3rd and most important is product! But make sure you are getting the best for your hairstyle and texture, or you may be looking worse instead of better. So a good stylist will let you know exactly what you need. DJ Kaotik – [Dee-Jay-Kay-ot-ik] adjective, noun or verb – causing confusion or disorder, known to blow the doors off of any establishment forcing it’s attendees to mindlessly gyrate to music; losing track of time, control of self and eventually, leave them craving more pulse pumping music. Walk into a venue where DJ Kyle Kaotik is spinning and find a dull night…that’s a challenge! Like his name, he has an ability to incite a riot-like atmosphere with his mastery of the turntables and his assortment of crowd-pleasing music wherever he is spinning. Inspired by some of the greats, DJ Kaotik is slowly becoming synonymous around San Diego, Las Vegas and other major cities for conjuring up an electric atmosphere and mind numbing experience wherever he spins; an impressive list which includes some of the top venues in the world. One on One with DJ Kaotik What inspired you to become a DJ? Ahhhh Man!! So much, I was lucky enough to be born in the era of Turntabalism. Watching Jam Master J was a great tool to see how a DJ could move the crowd with just a flick of the wrist. It is really amazing if you think about it, how the DJ has evolved from a house party to selling out 100,000 + venues. I am inspired every day with music. How long have you been spinning? I have been in the game for 15+ yrs. Started when I was 14 with my 1st turntables. And I’m not going to reveal my age now because I still have a baby face hahahaha! I see you have spun at Keyclub, Roxy, Chateau Maramount, Viper Room just to name a few, do you have a favorite place to spin? I was very lucky early in my career to have the opportunity to spin at these venues. I was working with a Co. in Beverly Hills so that opened doors for me that would have been closed. My Favorite place to spin is Drai’s After Hours in Vegas. It is ranked the #1 after hours venue in the world. So that is huge to be a part of that tradition and notoriety. Are you a resident DJ at Bar West? Yes I am, you can catch me in the mix just about every Friday and Sunday there. Sundays are Industry Sundays and Fridays are NO COVER FRIDAYS so it is always packed and honestly it has the dopest staff in SD.

Bartenders, Bussers, Security, Management... Everyone Loves this Venue. What is your favorite genre to spin? How does that make you Kaotik? haha I am a lover of all music but I am A House Head. 100% Pure House Music. Tech house is my favorite, it is positive and brings out the love in you. The way I spin makes me Kaotik because when I am in the zone your night is going to be very Kaotik (in a good way) :) Are you signed to a label or entertainment company? Which one? As of right now I am independent, which has its plus and minuses. I have been on the lookout for a Management Co. for the past year and I have a few lined up to speak to in the coming weeks. Mostly in Vegas. What is your advice for anyone trying to become a DJ? It is not easy!! You cannot just go buy a laptop and tables and think you will get booked at a venue. There is so much work that goes into being a DJ that it is sometimes mindnumbing. Upcoming DJ’s think we show up to a venue and rock it out. Definitely not the case, I myself listen to music at-least 8 hrs a day. It is a never-ending process. You are always learning. All I can say is that when you were a baby you learned how to crawl before you walked, Take DJing the same way and you will succeed. Who are your favorite DJ’s? WOW! this is a never-ending list hahaha! but if I had to list my absolute Favs then I would say... Bad Boy Bill, Chris Garcia, DJ Dan, Darius Syrossian, Calvin Harris But this is really only a few. World Famous DJ or world famous performing artist? Tough question, I guess World Famous Performing Artist because that allows me to spin the music I love and that people coming to my shows they would equally love. Fashion at the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards by Kimberly Kimmel

From oranges and greens to animal prints to 50 “shades of grey”, color and strapless seemed to be the order of the evening at the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The show, held June 23rd at the Beverly Hilton Hotel certainly had its fashion “game” on. But not just any fashion, the emphasis appeared to be on the throwback look of the movie star glam days.

The red carpet used to sport mostly black and floor length gowns. Now things have “changed up” to anything goes at the award shows. We’ve chosen some great and not so great looks from the flock of stars that strode the red carpet. The evening’s sexiest look goes to Shelley Hennig who used to play Stephanie Johnson on Days of our Lives. This curvy actress wore a plum strapless number cut down to there which emphasized her hourglass figure. The designer of this gorgeous gown is Pamella Roland. A hit of the evening, she even had plum on her lips to match her gown.

Chandler Massey who plays Will Horton on Days of our Lives, won the award for “younger actor in a drama series” and was debonair in a plaid three-piece suit complete with bow tie. Jen Lilley who plays Maxie Jones on General Hospital, wore a gray strapless number from designer Sue Wong. This floor length creation exuded the old movie star glam and was a throwback to the 30’s and 40’s. Lilley also wore her hair in a slick side parted bob to match the theme.

Another winner of the evening, for “younger actress in a drama series” was Christel Khalil, who plays Lily Winters on The Young and the Restless. She wore an above the knee black halter dress with a bubble skirt and looked pretty and flirty.

One actress who failed to dazzle was Molly Burnett, who plays Melanie Jonas on Days of our Lives. Her dull gray and black strapless gown didn’t do a thing to make her stand out or even emphasize her gorgeous auburn hair.

Another actor who played Ethan Lovett on General Hospital is heartthrob Nathan Parsons, who looked dashing in his three piece black suit with a creamy coral tie that stood out from the black ties of the evening. His long hair and goatee made him the handsomest man on the red carpet in our opinion. Amazingly, one of the hottest looking actresses of the evening was none other than Susan Lucci, who played Ericka Kane on All My Children. Although well into her 60s, she strode around in a silky and slinky orange number that clung to her slim figure. She looked fabulous for her age. Obviously the glam look will always be in as it was on the red carpet this year. And as for color, the more the better! We can’t wait to see who wins for fashion as well as the awards next year. In a world of makeup brushes, sponges, foundation, and eyeshadow a young starlet is moving up the ranks. Claire Navarez is making a name for herself in the ultra competitive world of makeup artistry. Having already established herself as a truly talented artist, this Southern Californian is proving time and again that she has what it takes to hold her own.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? What inspired you to become a makeup artist and where can the reader go to see your work?

I’m a certified makeup artist based in Southern California specializing in print, runway, film and bridal makeup. I received my professional training at Empire Academy of Makeup in Costa Mesa. My passion for makeup and making others feel beautiful started at a young age. Growing up, I was into painting and in my adolescences it translated to makeup. What do you enjoy the most about what you do and what would you say is the most challenging thing you have to deal with?

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of your work and I have to say…. Wow! How would describe your style when it comes to your craft? Thank you! I don’t have just one style of makeup since I love doing everything from clean to high fashion looks. Regardless of the look I’m going for though it needs to look flawless. How important would you say education is in regards to what you do? Education is very important. Learning proper technique, color theory, client psychology and creating a different illusion of bone structure are imperative to makeup applications. I believe that artists who have the most talent continually strive to improve skills, learn about the newest products and formulas and refine application skills and techniques for all types of lighting. There is always room for improvement and I truly enjoy the challenge of continually growing as an artist and taking my work to the next level. Who are some fellow makeup artists that inspire you and

Vacation time is rapidly approaching and the question arises of where exactly should you go? Below are the top ten hottest vacation getaways for the summer of 2012. It is the ideal list equipped with descriptions of the perfect location for any occasion, affordability, and what exactly draws tourists to that unique spot, making it rank top ten in Junes list.

1) Tulum: Instead of traveling to the highly populated and crowded city of Cabo Mexico spend this summer in Tulum. Tulum is the ideal destination for avid nature lovers, yoga participants, and vacationers in seek of a peaceful and serene trip. Tulum offers archaic ruins left from the Mayans offering a deep history behind the beauty of the land, and clear waters bordering the frontier of Riviera Mayan Beaches. Quebec City is a touristy city. How can it not be? With the picturesque charm of a small European village, the proximity to the United States, and the refreshingly friendly Quebecois (Quebec City residents), the place teems with tourists during the summer months. Because of the tourist nature of the city, plan your visit during the “off season” (September to May) instead. The weather is similar to New England but with a crisp breeze. Without the herd of tourists patronizing places called Crepe World, you will befriend the locals who will send you to hidden bars further down St. John. “Look for the red light above the door,” they’ll say. Quebec City appeals to travelers from around the world ready to delve into Canadian culture and nightlife with visitors from Brazil, Australia, and Korea seeking something outside the tourist walls. Quebec City is approximately two hours from the Canadian border. A ten hour trip by car from New York City and eight hours from Boston, take the drive worth a short vacation. Rather than spend another weekend in the Hamptons or Nantucket packed into an expensive bar playing Top 40 music, head north for a little French Canadian hospitality. Don’t forget your passport! Quebec City is full of budget friendly hotels, hostels, and bed and breakfasts. Amiable accommodations located in neighborhoods close to the waterfront, the lodgings offer proximity to the sights and allow for a pedestrian friendly vacation. Once you make the drive to Quebec City, lose the car. Best explored on foot, the city encompasses all the things that walkers love: cobblestones, clandestine alleyways and side streets, steep hills, and grassy knolls to lay your weary feet at the end of the day. Most of the accommodations provide free or discount parking. Don’t waste time to find a spot on the street, just park the car and forget about it. For the visitors looking for a hotel with a bit more panache than your average B&B, Fairmount Le Chateau Frontenac will suit your needs. The hotel presides over the city like a powerful fortress with its uniformed bellboys and extravagant lobby. Le Chateau houses both history and relevance in Quebec City. For those who cannot afford Le Chateau, give a wink to the handsome doormen and make your way into the hotel for an easy tour around the ornate lobby and grounds. Enjoy a martini at the Le St-Laurent Bar to admire one of the best views of the St Lawrence River. Just below the hotel, the Promenade des Gouverneurs follows the River, offering wide views of the harbor and Levis, the neighborhood hugging the other side of the St. Lawrence. Head down the Promenade away from the city and follow the stairs to the Citadelle, a military stronghold and official residence of the Governor General of Canada. The Citadelle building begins the formation of the fortifying walls surrounding the “Historic District of Quebec.” This quarter of the city, also known as Old Quebec, is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list as one of the only two walled cities in North America (Mexico City is the other one). The wall runs approximately 10-20 feet tall above the city streets and atop the wall is a different kind of park. Students,

families and tourists sprawl out on the grass or sit on the edge of the wall until the police tell them to move back. Those atop the wall can follow the pedestrians below, as they wander through Old Quebec and then pass under the arch on Rue Saint-Jean into the new city. To pass under the arch means to drift into a slightly different world, a Quebec that feels less tourist, more realist. Follow Rue Saint-Jean and you find a variety of small, chic restaurants to choose from, bistros with a few small tables on the sidewalk and a number of appealing bars and pubs. Linger around the square just outside of the Palais Montcalm, a majestic performing arts theatre that sits above the Rue Saint-Jean casting a shadow on the skateboarders and their onlookers. Amble down the street and the quaint weekender’s paradise slowly transforms into a hip urban environment overflowing with Quebecois. In addition to the bistros and bars, clothing shops pop up and the type of shops whose sex toy window dressing you will likely not find anywhere else in North American. Past these shops sits Bar Terrasse Le Sacrilege, a hidden masterpiece among the many watering holes in Quebec. Ignore the front door entrance and instead venture through the side entry, a close alleyway that will lead you into the lush beer garden. You will feel as though you stumbled upon a secret party. In the beer garden abundant foliage allows for just the right amount of sunlight to flicker through its leafy maze and there is nary a tourist in sight. Order in French from the spoken happy hour menu of white, blonde, or brown brews; whichever beer you choose you will end up with a refreshing beverage at minimal cost. Hit this place on Friday afternoon and the after-work crowd of Quebecois along with an older eccentric group of men and women take over the picnic tables both inside and out. Leave Bar Le Sacrilege with your French vocabulary more extensive than when you went in and walk to Le Hobbit, an affordable French bistro four blocks back down Saint-Jean. Enjoy local French cooking in the stylish restaurant with a genial staff and full bar. One block down from Le Hobbit sits bar/nightclub La Ninkasi, where the DJ pumps out 50’s beach

music downstairs and 90’s grunge upstairs. A popular student and post-student bar scene thrives at La Ninkasi while the bartenders carry out their duties of watering the herd until 2:30am. Leave the bar any later and you’ll find that you are the only one on the streets wandering back to your lodgings. Because of the student population in Quebec City the lack of late night nightlife surprises visitors. Unless you are invited to a house party you will be hard pressed to find anything open past 3am. Despite the student community and boisterous neighborhoods, Quebec City, unlike its infamous neighbor Montreal, is quite understated when it comes to hard partying and late night revelry. An early night in Quebec City is not necessarily a bad idea. One of the finest sights in Quebec is the Montmorency Falls, located just outside city limits. And there is no better way to get there than on bike. And there is no better time to bike than after getting a full six hours sleep the night before and enjoying a huge bowl of coffee with your French breakfast. The Montmorency Falls lie approximately 12km (7.5 miles) outside the city. Rent bicycles for four hours at $20 and pick up the bike path skirting the city, teeming with fellow cyclists and rollerbladers. The ride is for the most part leisurely, with the wind coming off the top of the river your only adversary at times. Once you reach the falls, catch some solitude from the buses of tourists by wandering along the rocky beach and wading in the cold water. Or hike up the steep stairs to get incredible views of the falls and rope bridge that carries sightseers across the rushing waters. Back in town, return your bikes and grab a fast and tasty lunch at the Lebanese restaurant next to the bike shop before going back to your room to crash. Or walk over to the Marché du Vieux-Port de Québec, the city market open seven days a week serving up French Canadian pastries, German sausage, local wine samplings, fish, cheese, chocolate and fleurs, fleurs, fleurs! Sit on the back patio to take in the easy view of the small boat canal and passersby. Before leaving Quebec City would one be remiss to not step even further outside the tourist path and venture to Frites Alors, a small diner-esque restaurant that focuses its talents on the infamous French-Canadian dish, poutine (French fries topped in gravy and cheese). Straddling the Montcalm and Haute-Ville neighborhoods, Frites Alors is snug and cheap. The menu boasts several different poutine combinations like La cochonne which is pork fat and grilled onions or the Poutine La Boucane that comes with bbq smoked cheese and of course all the French fry dishesare topped off with the poutine essentials, cheese curds and gravy. It is difficult to sum up Quebec City without using the typical travel clichés because it does embody so much of what tourists and travelers are looking for in a city vacation. But it just as easily can be a weekend getaway, even a day trip for those that live close enough. Just over the border of Vermont, sits a city that encompasses the style of the French with the hospitality of Canada. It is well worth the trip. >

After our group competition, our trainers break up into four stations. Each station is geared toward a specific muscle group or activity. And the plyometric and stair training stations gets those summer legs ready.

This whole workout lasts about an hour and a half. After the workout we have optional nutrition and supplement advising available where we create comprehensive meal plans for our clients. Vegan

More and more people are going vegan. From Ellen DeGeneres to Alicia Silverstone (author of The Kind Diet,) it seems the popular thing to do. Books such as The China Syndrome by T. Colin Campbell and Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman tout the benefits of veganism. Even movies such as Food, Inc., with its unsettling view of corporate farming and the repercussions to animals and the environment, is convincing that a vegan diet is the way to go. The word vegan means eating nothing from an animal. That means no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cream, milk, cheese, or even honey. But how do you know if eating vegan is right for you?

For some people, eating a completely animalfree/cruelty-free plant based diet is a spiritual decision. They let their heart and conscience be their guide. But for others, it can be a struggle to go from eating a juicy cheeseburger, to a veggie soy burger.

Here are some things to consider when thinking of going vegan: •

Cost. Organic food is more expensive. But, when you adopt a vegan diet, you naturally eat healthier and avoid things such as steaks, bacon and ice cream.

•

Food choices. Some people who take meat and dairy out of their diet, end up substituting some unhealthy choices such as sugary foods and too many simple carbs. If you are going to eat healthier, it is best to avoid things like organic cupcakes or dairy free ice cream. Make sure you check the labels to see what is really in that package of soy burgers.

•

Health. Some people who have thyroid problems, for example, must stay away from foods such as soy and gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, oats and mullet. Soy and wheat are the main ways vegans get their protein. This narrows your food choices considerably where getting enough protein is concerned.

•

Cooking. Let’s face it, you’ll have to cook. Places like McDonalds and Burger King just don’t offer a wide variety of vegan choices.

Your family and friends. Get ready for a scoff at the next family gathering. When you tell your family you’ve gone vegan, you’ll be in for some eye rolling even though most people have no idea what a vegan diet actually is.

Health. Some studies swear that cholesterol levels are raised by eating animals. New studies show that sugar, processed foods and sodas are the culprit. Which actually makes sense. 100 or more years ago, having a heart attack or cancer was rare. People who ate off the farm didn’t develop diabetes. Amazingly some people have found when they eat a lot of wheat and sugar, their cholesterol and triglyceride levels actually rise.

Needles to say, it’s a personal choice. While things such as meat-free Mondays are a great idea, and adhering to a vegan diet is the way we can help thousands of animals a day, only you can make thedecision if you are ready to make a full commitment to eating a vegan diet. ■

The Amazing Spiderman I was lucky and hungry enough to receive free passes into the sneak peek of this film. I was so happy to see some scenes and get a feel about how awesome or dull this movie will be. I’m writing this article to share my experience of the event and tell you what to expect when the movie opens this July. I can tell you it was an exhausting, exciting, silly, and fun little event. I won’t ever do this again but at least I got free popcorn, a t-shirt, gave the hand to a camera, and an open mind about this film. Go Spidey or not? THE FIRST LINE

Horrible! Terrible! I had to stand in the damn cold for a Spiderman movie! I was pissed!!! Not really though but that line was long. I’m talking about making a circle around the building long... TWICE! It didn’t help that I had to stand in line with a bunch of annoying college students who wanted to sleep with each other. I could tell by her fake laughter and his school boy tactics; Making up dumb jokes, telling her how cute her hair is, neglecting her pimples, anything to get in a young woman’s pants. On the other arm there was a guy who I will call Smelly, only because he smelled like body odor. He told me that he literally ran here because he was running late. I was just thinking he was so excited that he forgot to put on his deodorant. Being stuck in between Tom and Jerry and an oversized gym sock was not something that I was expecting. The linewasn’t moving much either and I envisioned myself either leaving while giving Sony a middle finger or taking out my cell phone and unleashing fake gun shots to get people to piss their pants.

Yeah it was that serious!

Finally the line moved. I was able to get my way to the front of the building. I was excited that I will finally escape my situation and get into the film. The Sony executives took the passes and gave us a little spider logo to hold. After receiving my golden ticket I ran past my enemies and got to the station. I was surprised to see camera men and light fixtures. I wasn’t expecting that at all. They even had refreshments, popcorn, and giving away t-shirts. Some people were being interviewed which I thought was pretty cool. Of course I avoided all this stuff because what I came for was Spidey and not their fat man snacks. Then the horror hit me and I realize that Sony is mean. I had to wait in another damn line! THE SECOND LINE This was worst then the first one. People are disgusting slobs when no one is watching. Standing in that line proved to me that if society ever crumbles that humans will result back to being douchebags. There were popcorn all over the floor, spilt soda like they really didn’t give a damn, and how did someone lose their panties? I really don’t want to know how I’m just disappointed that I missed the show. Then I was stuck in another situation.

This some nonsense!

This time it was with an internet geek who makes love to Spiderman on the regular and a ho. I really don’t know if she was a ho or not but her outfit wasn’t leaving much to the imagination. I didn’t mind until her man or someone who wants to bang her, kept eyeballing me. Newsflash for men who act like this: If you have to eyeball a stranger who is standing behind your girlfriend to see if he is checking her out you either have serious relationship issues, can’t trust her, or you have a small p***s. It’s called Small D**k Syndrome. Wife beaters have it too. Finally the line started to move and boom. I’m in Spiderman baby! THE SNEAK PEEK The theater was packed with raging fans eager to get their viewing on. It had lighting equipment setup and its own projector. First we saw the new trailer and it was in 3D. The trailer looked good but I wasn’t totally hooked yet. Then we saw some additional footage that told us more about the story. It seems that Spiderman’s father was involved in some shady business. His parents disappeared and left Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield, with his grandparents. Peter is still being bullied at school by Flash. They even played a small homage to Flash Gordon during the scene.

Fun times!

Dr. Curt Connors, played by Rhys Ifans, looked like the version in the comics. His lizard form is all CGI but it looks pretty sweet. The CGI itself wasn’t fully finished but some of the scenes looked eye popping. They still have a lot to finish but the action looks prom ising. The dialog seemed to flow well and the humor is there. I thought to myself if they used this comic approach with Tobey Maguire this movie would be awesome. Don’t get me wrong, Andrew is a good Spiderman, I just have to get use to him. To answer some of your questions: Does Spiderman have to make his own web material? Yes Is Mary Jane in it? No Is Harry Osbourne present? Only mentioned Any other villains than lizard? Nope Is this Spiderman funnier than the last? So far the answer is damn right!

Peter Parker remains his sarcastic self even when he gets beat down. Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, is his love interest in this film. The chemistry between the two is very good. Instead of Peter chasing her she is already in love with him and is willing to stand by his side. Her father, played by Denis Leary, is hunting down Spiderman and thinks he’s a vigilante that needs to be brought to justice. What surprised me was having him reveal himself to Gwen and allowing the police to remove his mask. Rather or not he is recognized is still unanswered but it makes me want to see the film.

Is this film going to be better than Sam Raimi’s? Humor wise yes, everything else is still hanging in the air. THE END The movie itself makes me want to see it just to find out if they had the balls to unmask him in the first movie. The humor is good and is better than the first series. The action looks to be exciting and the 3D looked great. I am excited about this film and it does look better than I thought. I would go see it, even if it’s just to compare the movies. I know I will never go to a Sony sneak peek again. ■

The Hype The Dark Knight Rises is the most anticipated movie of the year. Four years ago The Dark Knight revolutionized how comic book films needed to be made. This film even inspired the soon to be released Amazing Spiderman to take a grittier approach, just to keep up. It had an actual story, action, suspense, and one of the best villains of all time. Health Ledger gave the best performance out of any actor that year, and earned him an Oscar. Unfortunately, he died of an accidental drug overdose that same year. Any plans of doing the third installment featuring the Joker was scrapped. Nolan went on record saying “The joker will not appear out of respect for Heath Ledger. He won’t even be mentioned.” So how will Christopher Nolan top The Dark Knight?

To many fans displeasure Nolan picked Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane. Like when Health Ledger was first casted the fans thought that Nolan fell off his rocker. Not bringing back Two – Face and hiring his past actors didn’t sit well the fans and some members of the general public. As filming went underway the fans gradually came to accept the notion that Nolan knows what he’s doing. The phrase “Trust in Nolan” started popping up on the internet. So the question is now “Should we trust in Nolan?”

What can I do? Christopher Nolan looked to his longtime friend David S. Goyer and his brother Jonathon Nolan to come up with something special. They decided to end the trilogy because in their minds, and every-

So what’s the story about? Christopher Nolan decided to take The Batman Trilogy to another level. It takes place 8 years after the events in The Dark Knight. Gotham is now a peaceful city due to the crime rate almost being irradiated. The city is still mourning the death of Harvey Dent and still has no clue the monster he became. Bruce Wayne retired the bat suit and took his fight for justice under his own persona. He is still a playboy and forms a relationship with Marion, played by Miranda Tate. Everything seems to be going well until a terrorist pays Gotham a visit. That terrorist is carnage itself, Bane. Will it live up to the Anticipation? I believe it will. Nolan drafted an intriguing storyline that will leave people at the edge of their seats. Bane is introduced in a unique and terrifying way that may send a chill down your spine. In the comics Bane has a serum named venomw that makes him stronger. In the film the serum acts more of a pain killer due to him being in constant agony. Catwoman won’t be called that in this film but instead by her real name, Selina Kyle. Just like the comics she’s more of a sneaky alley cat than an actual foe.

Joseph Gordon – Levitt joins the cast as a young detective that works with Gordon. He helps Gordon clean up the streets of Gotham but becomes intrigued with Bane and Catwoman’s antics. Catwoman fears Bane and would rather keep her distance. Her and Batman do hit it off in more ways than one but ends up coming to an understanding. They know if Bane isn’t stopped that he will burn Gotham to the ground. The question is now “Will Batman make that ultimate sacrifice to rid Gotham of its darkest foe?”

The film opens July 20th. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype. ■

He brings Gotham to its knees with his raw power and intelligence. This causes Bruce Wayne to dawn the bat suit one more time, to rid Gotham of this menace. One problem though, Bane happens to be Batman’s match in every way possible and leaves him broken and defeated. This causes Batman to remember his past, think about the present, and wonder about the future and Gotham itself. Can batman overcome the odds and save the city and himself?

One question still lingers in people’s minds… Will Batman die? Well with the tone of the film and having batman half the man he used to be that rumor may very well be true. It would be a shock to kill off a famous superhero in his trilogy. I don’t think it’s ever been done before. It gives us something to think about and maybe something to look forward to. Does Warner bros and Christopher Nolan have the guts to kill Batman?

X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke embarks on her sophomore album Heartbreak On Hold. Overflowing with club beats, booming bass and disposable lyrics, this follow up effort is a mixed bag of misgivings. Much of the album contains the same formula without much deviation. “Elephant” and “Let It Go” are competent dance tunes, but don’t leave a lasting impression. The drum loop on “Daylight Robbery” was an unexpected risk that paid off. On the Soul-House “Love You That Much,” Alexandra gives an incredible vocal performance with rich harmonies and lovely falsettos. Other notable songs are the dreamy “Sitting On Top of The World” and the summer breeze of “This Love Will Survive.” Sadly, a lot of the songs sound dated and lackluster. Even a sample of Crystal Waters’s 90’s classic “Gypsy Woman” could not help to elevate “Oh La La” from being mediocre. Unfortunately the vocals on majority of the album are fair, expected and uninspired. It seems that creativity and ambition were also on hold.

Cheryl Cole – A Million Lights (Album Review) (Fascination) Apparently, third time is not the charm on Cheryl Cole’s third solo album A Million Lights. The soundscape of this album is plagued with mediocre Urban Pop and generic R&B. A lot of the songs sound aged like cheese that’s been left in the fridge too long. The album’s stand out tracks include the lead single “Call My Name” and the bombastic bass-down-low of “Ghetto Baby” cowritten by Indie Pop sensation Lana Del Rey. Regrettably, the album overstays its welcome after the third song. Someone should have turned the lights off.

Dream Beats ft. The Face – Love Stuck (Single Review) (Universal Music)

Newly formed Swedish production house Dream Beats teams up with newcomer The Face for their latest single “Love Stuck.” This psychedelic funk track accompanied with soulful vocals and an insatiable hook takes its cue from 70’s Glam and Disco. Nothing short of an instant smash for the new kids on the scene. Regrettably, the album overstays its welcome after the third song. Someone should have turned the lights off.

Florrie – Late (Album Review) (Independently Released) The multifaceted singer and songwriter of Xenomania fame, Florrie has independently released her final EP Late; a maelstrom of 60’s Pop, electric guitars riffs, Techno beats, layered synthesizers and infectious lyrics. The first offering “Shot Him Down” is a funky Retro Pop tune with a disco bassline and lush synths. Florrie relates the demise of her relationship to the firing of a gun as she sings “I pull the trigger on our love/ Keep messing me around/ Got my finger on the gun/ Bang Bang I shot you down.” Some other interesting tunes include the Drum and Bass rush of “I’m Gonna Get You Back” and Electro-Rock clash of “To The End.” The heart pounding, Europop rapture of “Every Inch” exudes an unquestionable amount of sex appeal and danger. This four track EP starts strong and finishes first. Its exhilarating, sexy and cool without trying too hard. Its current without being generic and stale. As the old sayings goes, “Better late than never.” And Florrie is definitely fashionably late.

International fashion icon and Pop legend Kylie Minogue released her latest single “Timebomb.” Its a fuzzy, dirty-bass electro thrill ride that takes a grit-over-glitter approach. Quite frankly, “Timebomb” is one of the best singles Kylie has released in her 25year spanning career and arguably the best single released in 2012 thus far. What better way to celebrate her 25th Anniversary than with a bang.

It’s an exciting time - the Starliners Radio Network in the Netherlands just named me Artist of the Year for 2012 and I was also awarded a Gold Award by the RGW Network in the U.K. for the most-requested single in addition to 2 nominations at the Los Angeles Music Awards for Dance Artist of the Year and Pop Single of the Year. I have been in the dance/electronic scene for many years and always had a passion for great rock music as well; I have made it my mission to bring pop songs with a dance-electronic feel and a rock’n’roll heart to my fans worldwide. 160 | www.theGOODSmag.co • July 2012

How would you best describe yourself as an artist? I would describe myself as a total perfectionist learning that there is no such thing especially when it comes to art. I work very hard on myself and anything I do, and putting anything out there in a fast-living time like this puts a lot of pressure on us artists for things to be perfect; but I am realizing there is no such thing as fast, rush, quick and also at the same time ultra-perfectionism, but I won’t give up trying. I like to live in the very moment but at the same time get shaken around when I get asked to suddenly perform in 3 days a show for major press and media because it pushes me outside of my comfort zone, I am very passionate about what I do and I feel that is the first step of becoming a hard

to write every day a great new movie, if only I had the time to write scripts. I love music and what it does to me; I have a song for every mood that I am in and feel that is the greatest therapy ever. If I wake up every day and feel like creating the world around me new, that would describe me very well as the artist I am, always in it with my heart and soul. Other then music, what inspires you? Anything that moves can inspire me, a little hummingbird landing in front of my face checking me out or a hot sexy sports car driving along PCH gives me inspiration. Great stage shows, lasers and lights, anything well-put-together that leaves my jaw open (last one was Madonna’s performance at the Super Bowl). Dance inspires me, movement

How did you get involved in music and what is your earliest memory of music’s involvement in your life? I went to a conservatory and raised on a classical background studying singing and later dancing which I attended as an after-school program. My teacher wanted to send me to a full-time art school very early, but when I was little I did not understand what an art school was and felt offended since my parents did not find the right way to explain it to me since the concept was new to them. Today I wish I would have attended that school, but I instead chose the business school. I have always loved making costumes, getting dressed, performing and singing in various school assemblies. When going to church, my favorite part was always when we finally got to the singing. A funny memory I will never forget is when we went to a bar, I think I was maybe 16 or so (in Europe you can get into bars when you’re under 21) and they were going to give away a bottle of champagne to anybody going up there and singing “Country Road”. This is a song we made always fun of, so here was my moment, and I was too shy to get up there. Now I feel more shy in a crowd or in public then when I’m on stage. Up there it’s my own little world. In this industry what is something that you feel you can’t survive without? As much as I hate admitting it, but social media has been great to me and my music, as it allows my music to be heard all over the world and gives access to people who might not be able to find it at their local record store. You can get a hold of my music thru great services like Google Play, Amazon or iTunes. What is one thing you would like your listeners to take away from your album Light ‘n’ Dark? Light ‘n’ Dark tells a story of opposites, I can never be every day the same. There are good times, there are very bad and dark times for all of us throughout our lives, and that is what I have put into “Light ‘n’ Dark”. The album is divided into 3 acts, each separated by a poetry piece. I felt the urge to do next to some great dance tracks also some poetry set to music since I already saw a vision of how it would all look on stage. I have put a lot of thought into the album as a complete concept, and it took me 2 years to develop the music, story and artwork. Since I picked a topic that is very hard to put into the physical world it took me that long to find the right team. I made music for my fans that should keep them moving on the dance floor, singing and also feeling good about what they hear and about themselves, because each song has a message waiting to be discovered. 5 of my CDs contain a Golden Ticket and the winners will get to join me in the studio or on the set of an upcoming music video. I was blessed to work with producers of

Beyonce, Usher, Slash and others and had the chance to make an album that does NOT sound like everything else out there but like me. I also have on 2 songs (“Come Up Fighting” and “Damned if I Know”) an amazing singer named Durga McBroom, who is known worldwide and sang with Pink Floyd on some of their greatest albums and tours. I felt like bringing in something that people loved about the era back then into the time of today. I also brought a little bit of a Rock’n’Roll feel into my songs by adding some distorted guitars on some of the songs. How’s someone you see yourself working with in the future and why do you want to work with them? There are 2 people I would love to work with, because I think they are as perfectionist as I am and hard on themselves and are true great artists… Eminem and Madonna. What are your plans for the next year? Working on even more music and touring – going overseas since I just signed a booking contract with Spain and Ibiza and bringing my music beyond any borders. I’m also doing some dates this fall in the southwest US opening up for Tiësto and David Guetta; I can’t wait! I can never sit still and have some amazing ideas that I want to implement in my shows and who knows, maybe starting some new brands, not sure yet. For sure I want to meet all my fans worldwide, since they are not just in the US, but also in Europe, Asia, Russia and also many eastern European Countries, as well in the United Arab Emirates. Every day is so different for me and I try to fly with the wind, as they say, always reaching for the best outcome to connect with people. Okay, on a non-music note (there is a pun in there somewhere), how does K’Sandra like to spend her summer? I love to hang out in my pool, swimming while overlooking the ocean. It’s all about water for me, either drinking it or bathing in it this summer, making smoothies with lots of berries, eating Gummi Bears that my best friend just sent me from Germany, trying tons of fashion on, followed by amazing dance parties with my friends dancing to the hottest club beats or best summer hits. And, of course, music will be always a part of it, rehearsing with my band and dancers in my studio and gigging.
