The Cocoanut Grove Ocean-front elegance and Santa Cruz charm Guests have been dancing by moonlight in California’s classic Cocoanut Grove since 1907. The famous landmark, with its grand beachfront location, is ideal for weddings, dances, banquets and celebrations of all sizes. Over the past 100 years, the Grove has been the setting for many important West Coast events including the state’s first Miss California Ball and the greatest performers of the Big Band era. The 20,000-square-foot facility has been tastefully updated in a way that preserves the building’s unique character and historic roots. The Grove’s professional staff provides full banquet, bar and kitchen services, as well as complete event planning with menu and beverage options for up to 1,000 guests.

The Sun Room features breathtaking views and a retractable glass ceiling, capturing sunshine and ocean breezes during the day and glittering with starlight after dark. The Grand Ballroom with its elegant oval lines, a tiered stage, wooden dance floor, and balcony seating, reflects the glamour and romance of the 1940s. A spectacular ocean-front setting and experienced, friendly staff make the elegant Cocoanut Grove the perfect choice for weddings and receptions of all sizes.

Less Stress Advice for brides-to-be from Cocoanut Grove staff: 2 Listen to the experts—that’s what you pay them for.

6 Keep accurate notes of what you discuss with vendors and make sure all vendors are aware of changes that may have been made during various planning sessions.

3 Make a list of “must haves” for your event. Set priorities from very important to those on a wish list.

7 Your site coordinator, photographer, and DJ or bandleader should all be given an accurate timeline prior to the event.

4 Be prepared to compromise and be flexible within reason. This is “your day” but the wishes of both families should be considered.

8 If you aren’t hiring a wedding coordinator, ask a friend or family member to be the vendor liaison on the day of the event.

5 Ask for clarification when you don’t understand something. Your vendors may use unfamiliar terms and they need to know if something is confusing to you.

9 Try to enjoy the planning process—take time to relax along the way.

1 Know your budget and try to stick to it.

Featuring intriguing indoor and outdoor spaces, full service catering from Solaire and a cool new venue, Hotel Paradox offers a great variety of wedding ceremony and reception spaces perfect for your special event. 30 JAN

Joyce Anderson Productions Fashionista alert: expect another alluring fashion show at this year’s expo Joyce Anderson is right at home in the spotlight. As creator of her own company, Joyce Anderson Productions, she is involved in television production and public relations, has appeared on television countless times, including on her show Inside Santa Cruz, which has been running for 18 years. And she is an ace at organizing fashion shows. Once again, Anderson is putting on the popular fashion show as part of the 2013 Bridal Expo at the Cocoanut Grove on Jan. 27. “I have been coordinating fashion shows for over 35 years, all over the Bay Area,” Anderson says. “And I have trained hundreds of models.” As well as training models on deportment and how to use the runway correctly, Anderson is also a fashion stylist and works with models to help them get the right look. She also works with South Bay Accent magazine on their covers. In the fashion show at the Bridal Expo, Anderson uses about 30 to 40 models. She is particularly excited to be featuring the beautiful and talented Miss Santa Cruz in this year’s show, Jessica Vo, who recently participated in the Miss California pageant in Pasadena. Anderson is also thrilled to have Moda Bellissima; Jewels on Pacific; Hair by Kye; The Cosmo Factory; Elements Salon & Spa; and Sound in Motion providing the music. “This year it’s not all wedding dresses,” she

adds. “Moda Bellissima is going to be showing destination wear—dresses and casual wear when you’re not in a bridal dress. I’m glad to have Moda Bellissima because it’s their one-year anniversary of being in business downtown. They will be supplying a dress for Jessica to wear, and also a dress for her interview [on the Miss California pageant],” Anderson says, who also worked with Vo for the Miss California pageant. “I’m also happy that Jewels on Pacific is participating. It’s the 10-year anniversary of their store and they are showing a Sue Wong collection.” Anderson is also featuring Bridal Veil Fashions in the show. The popular Capitola business has been around for 50 years, and present owners Joanne Cecchettini and her daughter Lisa Cecchettini have run the place for 38 years. Another Capitola company, Men’s Wearhouse on 41st Avenue, will be showing men’s tuxedos. “This is my 15th anniversary of doing the bridal fashion show for the Seaside Company,” Anderson says. “I’m very proud of the work I have done.” | Josie Cowden

It’s the Groom’s Day, Too Just as bridal fashions change from year to year, so does the groom’s attire. After all, the wedding is not only about what the bride is wearing—the groom also wants to look his very best. And a fashionable look is very important. These days, formal dress can mean many things. It can be a traditional tuxedo, white shirt, black tie and cummerbund to an elegant dark suit with plain shirt, tie and dress shoes. The choices are many. This year’s trend features much more color than before—lavenders, emerald greens, pastels—and even shoes of a different hue. Purple is a big hit, shirts have more patterns, and skinny ties are definitely in. Gray and charcoal tuxedos are trendy, and slim-fitting pants with flat fronts are now more in vogue than pants with pleats. Dark suits are always popular, of course, because they can be worn over and over. Blue and also lavender shirts, some with stripes, are taking the place of the plain white shirt. But whatever the choices, the groom might not want to go to the expense of buying an outfit he might not wear again. Jos. A. Bank is the expert in men’s apparel, and just about any type of clothing you can imagine can be bought or rented from them. Shirts of all

Do you want to wear a dark blue suit and red vest? No problem. A tailored jacket or slim fit, they have it. Jos. A. Choice Music DJ Company

The local entity lets its music and service speak for itself Every wedding needs music. “When you talk about wedding music, it hasn’t really changed over the years because there is always such a wide range of ages at any given ceremony,” explains Kurt Montgomery, sole owner of Choice Music Disc Jockey Services. He says that his company always plays a little of the Top 40, some oldies, big band songs, and, “at almost every wedding I’ve done … a Madonna song.” With a crew of talented DJs and more than 20 years of experience, Choice Music has been doling out the finest in wedding services since its inception in 1989. Moving alongside the advents of technology over the years, Choice has remained relevant today by offering more than just DJ services. “[Aside from] our DJ service, we do rentals, we do sales of new equipment, we do karaoke, we do videography, we have screens, projectors, and audio equipment of all types available,” notes Montgomery. “It’s really an audio-visual experience with us.” Choice DJs meet with couples ahead of time to coordinate an event-by-event schedule of what music will be played for each segment of the wedding. “We can play 100 percent of the songs [couples] request in advance, and 99 percent of what anyone requests at the ceremony,” Montgomery notes. With four mediums for playing music—a smart phone, computer, and two CD players— Choice DJs can access practically any song available on the Internet or in their extensive music database for on-the-spot requests or unexpected changes the day of the wedding. Movement from one location to another is no obstacle for Choice either. Over the years almost every major venue in Santa Cruz County has been serviced by Choice, including the Cocoanut Grove, Chaminade, and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Because of their extensive wedding experience, Choice even asserts that their DJs can serve as impromptu wedding ‘coordinators’. By working with the venue, vendors and guests on the special day, DJs can help maintain a stress-free flow from the ceremony to the reception and anything else in between. With weddings taking up roughly 30 percent of business every year, Choice employees

have seen anything from couples reaffirming their wedding vows, to partners getting married for the first time in their teens. “We’ve done all kinds of weddings, but my favorite are the very genuine weddings,” comments Montgomery. “You can physically feel that energy.” Overall, the members of Choice want to do everything in their power to complement the couple’s special day. “We’ve developed a pecking order,” jokes Montgomery. “When everything is said and done our goal is for the bride to be happy—that is number one, number two is the bride’s mother, and number three is the groom.” | Jenny Simeone

Three Tips for Securing the Perfect Wedding Tunes 1 “What most people do anyway, but

bears repeating is, pick the music that speaks to you, that makes you feel alive—the way you want to be on your wedding,” Montgomery notes. 2 “Pick a DJ that you can relate with

on a personal level—not just business level. Make sure you are [selecting someone] who is responsive to your needs and easy to work with before and during the wedding.” 3 “Don’t get so hung up on music, I

recommend including an open mic where all your guests have an opportunity to tell you how much they love you. It doesn’t have to be forever, but do give them that chance.”

Boulder Creek Flowers and Design Center The local entity wins points for its expertise When creating the look you want for your wedding, flowers play a huge role. A lot of money can be spent on floral arrangements so it is important to get what you want and get everything just right. The bride might want a huge bouquet of red and white roses, or a simple posy of all spring flowers. But that is only the first step. Then there are flowers for the location, displays for the reception room, boutonnieres for the groom, best man and groomsmen—and on and on. All of this takes a great deal of planning. And budget plays a huge role as well. This is where Boulder Creek Flowers comes in. In business for more than 30 years, they are not just “an ordinary retail florist.” They like to help the bride and groom create the look they want on their very special day—and within their price range. As with most florists, they have consultants who are trained to plan floral arrangements for weddings down to the last detail. Because Boulder Creek sells wholesale as well as retail, flowers can be bought from them to make up arrangements yourselves. Many people

go this route as no labor is involved and it is much less expensive. The florist will help you decide on the right flowers for the occasion, and you can have them delivered or pick them up from their store. Boulder Creek Flowers also has a large selection of glassware and floral supplies. And if you go the route of purchasing flowers from them to do your own floral arrangements, their team can help you determine “exactly how much product to order and show you some ways to save time and money when doing your own wedding work.” Manager Stacy Anders, who has been with Boulder Creek Flowers for eight years, says creams, ivories and very open lush roses are the latest trend. “It’s a shabby-chic look or antique look with soft colors, and it’s really pretty,” she says. “It’s a more natural, rustic look. | Josie Cowden
