WELCOME ... NOW, GET OUT! Three’s a charm for GT Active. In our third year of Good Times Weekly’s annual magazine, we salute the great outdoors in Santa Cruz County and also take a deeper look into the area’s fitness and health scenes. What thrilled us the most, however, was giving away several tickets to a lucky local who had the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind helicopter ride over our lush county and ocean, only to be set down at Talbott Vineyards nearby for a wine tasting. Fun. See page 56 for the full report on that. Also, take note of our center spread, featuring the best pictures of the year from Santa Cruz Waves. In the meantime, as you peruse this year’s publication, hopefully you will be reminded of how much there is to do here—not just in the great outdoors but in your ever-evolving exploration of health and fitness, too. Onward we go ... | Greg Archer, Editor

SKY’S LIMIT T H E

Things are never dull when there is another human strapped to your back and you are falling out of an airplane 10,000 feet about the ground. (And really, if it was dull, then we’d be happy to slap some life back into you.) But that’s what makes skydiving so thrilling. Thanks to one local portal, Skydive Surf City, which has been generating buzz over the last few years, locals are offered a terrific mix of having expertly trained jumpers at their service and, well, plenty of adventure above the Central Coast. Owner Volker Haag, who hails from Germany and has been somewhat of a globetrotter, experienced his first dive nearly a decade ago back east—in New Jersey, in fact. He admits that he’s been drawn back to the diving experience ever since.

“I am a very ambitious person,” Volker says. “I went to school forever, got good grades and tried to go for the corporate career, but I had much more fun ‘letting go’ after moving to Australia and New Zealand. Jumping out of planes and skydiving helped me let go out of that corporate box I was in. I was really set up to be a business person.” Not forever, though— at least not in the traditional sense. Several years ago, he became sole owner of Skydive Surf City LLC and, to date, has experienced 10,000 skydives. The company has two big-engine, 300hp planes, and dives take place six days during the week (except Wednesdays). A freefall lasts approximately 60 seconds, depending on body weight. Individuals will then have about five minutes under the canopy

to relish the view and the journey back to earth. Volker suggests planning ahead: two to three hours from the time of arrival at Skydive Surf City’s lair at Watsonville airport to the time you’re walking out the door and back to reality. “The beauty of what we do is specialize in first-time jumps,” Haag explains. “Anybody can come in and they will literally be strapped to us and doing a tandem jump. Anybody can do.” And he means anybody. Recent visitors include an 89-year-old woman and, over the last year, several individuals celebrating their 80th birthday. “I love it because it’s just ‘freedom,’” he adds. “It's the closest we humans can get to flying. When we are falling, you actually forget you are falling and it’s like you are flying. It’s quite peaceful.” | GREG ARCHER

Take note: an innovative video system can capture the entire experience from start to finish. This includes footage of the plane ride, freefall and the parachute descent. Skydiving prices: $199 (10,000 feet) and $229 (12,500-14,000 feet).

MEL 8 l GT ACTIVE

The veteran big-wave surfer Peter Mel, who won for his first time the Mavericks Invitational Surf Contest in January, attributes his victory to finally feeling like he could relax and enjoy the session. The 43-year-old, Santa Cruzreared pro has surfed and competed at Mavericks for 23 years, establishing himself as a staple favorite among the colossal-wave-chasers, but, until now, has narrowly missed taking the title. In the past, Mel says he's always felt tremendous pressure to win, but in recent years, that's changed. “Call it an epiphany,” he says, “but the reality has become that my professional surfing career has given way to my son's career, and my marriage, so this was just kind of a fun thing for me to do.” He says that those developments and other factors, like his taking on a full-time job as marketing director for Quiksilver in Newport Beach—which has taken off

the pressure to win contests in order to provide for his family—and the decision by the Mavericks competitors this year to evenly split the prize money (Mel took home $5,333.33), all contributed to his feeling perfectly primed for the contest. “I was in a different state of mind than previous years,” he says. “I was relaxed. If I'm not stressing, it reflects in my health, and it reflects in the way I surf.” While Mel says it feels like the stakes and stress levels associated with world-class surf competitions have gone down, the crown title is still one of the most gratifying experiences of his life. “It feels really good to be a Mavs champion, that was always a goal and a dream. I almost kind of gave it away, in the sense that I didn't really feel like I needed it anymore, but it happened. And now, it's just—wow. It feels really damn good.” Learn more at petermel.com. | JOEL HERSCH

VENTURE

QUEST KAYAKING

On the Monterey Bay, one of the most intimate and gratifying experiences with nature an adventurer can have is a close encounter with a whale, and an early-morning outing with Venture Quest Kayaking is a great way to do just that. One moment you're kayaking along on a cold, quiet morning through the glassy gray waters, not expecting anything, and suddenly, there's a loud whoosh, and something massive breaks the surface right alongside you, says Dave Johnston, a professional kayaker and head guide for Venture Quest. “That'll really get your heart going,” he admits. “It's amazing. You feel very connected to nature when something as big as a whale suddenly pays attention to you. It can change your life.” Venture Quest leads sea kayaking tours from the Municipal Wharf and also up the Elkhorn Slough in Watsonville. Johnston, who has been leading kayak tours for more than 25 years, starting out in the white water rapids of the Sierra Nevada, also practices kayak-

surfing, -fishing, and -whale-watching, for which he has developed a sixth-sense detection. Of all the kayak guides in the world, Johnston has the qualifications to be among the best. He has been a member of nine U.S. Surf Kayak Teams, has two World Championship titles, and five National titles. During tours, Johnston instructs on basic kayaking, ocean safety, delves into the natural history of the Monterey Bay, and environmental awareness. “It's the perfect way to go out and get a feel for the ocean,” he says. Gray whales frequent the Monterey Bay close to shore beginning in March and through May, he says. The best time for kayakers to have animal encounters are early mornings, which is why Johnston advises that people come early. Because meeting whales: “It reminds you that there's a whole world under there.” Venture Quest Kayaking, Municipal Wharf #2, Santa Cruz, 425-8445. | STEVE KUEHL

Sawyer Land & Sea Supply has just opened their doors in the Swift Street Courtyard on the Westside. Stacy Forrester, owner extraordinaire, took the plunge of leaving her corporate world job by starting her own storefront adventure, offering Santa Cruz residents custom-made surfboards by local shapers, quality clothing to suit our area’s climates, camping gear and other assorted items, but most of all; her contagious smile and radiant personality that conveys the enthusiasm she has in making this a community hub. The most obvious décor item that is beautifully suspended from the ceiling is a handmade wood canoe. The mastery is hung directly beneath the still-in-place cork ceiling from the building’s old factory days. Mark Sanchez, the owner of the Swift Street complex, stopped by during both of my visits and shopped for some apparel while sharing local history stories of the property. He was thrilled to have such an amazing tenant and vivacious lady to spice things up in the area. Future movie screenings and an upcoming self-designed clothing line will be supplementing Stacy’s love of the peace and community she already shares here. 402 Ingalls St., No. 21, Santa Cruz (near Kelly’s French Bakery), 458-3466, sawyersupply.com | STEVE KUEHL

MAIN BEACH VOLLEYBALL CLUB To excel as a volleyball player, one requires a competitive spirit, mental toughness, and the ability to communicate quickly and precisely with a team. “It's not just your physical ability,” says Melissa Stoll, the assistant coach for the girls' 14-year-olds team at Main Beach Volleyball Club (MBVBC). “The only way you're going to win is if you're all on the same page.” Stoll, who has coached for three years at MBVBC, played for four years at UC Santa Cruz, and competed on a national team, says MBVBC is a great place for kids and adults to learn, advance and enjoy the sport. Their starter program, called Blenders, teaches girls and boys under 13 the basics of the game on Saturday mornings, while the Sand program, starting in May, is for players of all ages and skill levels. Their club program is for boys and girls, 14 to 18 years old. Volleyball may not be a “full contact” sport, but it will definitely test your endurance. “You're diving and you're throwing your body on the ground,” she says. “It's tough. You're going to get battle wounds. But, you're also creating a sense of family with the people you play with.” Main Beach Volleyball Club, 345-1441. mbvbc.com. | JH

PACIFIC YAUGHTING AND SAILING

Full S a i l s Knowing how to race a sailboat with a crew is based on many of the same fundamentals as operating a company with an efficient and cohesive staff—deciding your goals, setting a course, and working together to achieve a purpose. Marc Kraft, founder and president of Pacific Yachting and Sailing in the Santa Cruz Harbor, offers Team Building Challenge Sailing courses. Participants form six-member groups and, paired with a Pacific Sailing captain on Catalina 32 boats, race against each other on the Monterey Bay. The training course and regatta, which run about three hours altogether, create a unique opportunity for companies to enhance cooperation, team spirit, and leadership. Kraft designed the team-building program 28 years ago when he was inspired by a “Ropes Course” training program for companies, he says. “In companies, you

often have a bunch of people who are each working apart in their own little cubby holes,” Kraft says. “Team Challenge trains them to work as a close-knit team. And when it gets windy, it's a way to learn about each other's personalities and see how they handle the rough patches.” The Team Challenge at Pacific Sailing, which primarily offers sailing school for American Sailing Association certifications, can accommodate up to 70 people divvied up on 14 sailboats. CROSSFIT YOURSELF

Super-human Greg Amundson on CrossFit and his unique style of teaching

A

After a group of 12 adults sprinted through the parking lot, they dashed into the gym to do a vigorous combination of pushups and deadlifts. Throughout their workout, they cheered each other on and encouraged one another to keep going. A combination of hard work, sweat, and motivation filled the gym, and after sitting through just one CrossFit class, it is evident that this is not the average workout. Instructor Greg Amundson teaches CrossFit classes along with five other instructors at his gym, CrossFit Amundson, located on Portola Drive in Santa Cruz. Amundson began CrossFit training in December 2001 with founder Greg Glassman at the original CrossFit Headquarters in Santa Cruz. Amundson, who was working as a deputy sheriff at the time, became hooked after his first workout. In 2007 Amundson was recruited by the DEA to become a special agent in Southern California, but after working there for four years, he realized that while he enjoyed his job, he just loved CrossFit. He retired from the DEA a year ago, and returned to Santa Cruz to open his own gym, which opened on July 2, 2012. Amundson uses a unique approach to teaching fitness, which has been described as “CrossFit with a mind, body, and spirit twist.” “It’s really easy to make the body strong; anybody can do that,” says Amundson. “But, to make the mind strong and the spirit strong, and to harmonize the three is challenging, but that’s what we do here.” Amundson came to develop this style of teaching once he saw how his body, mind, and

spirit grew stronger due to his hard work in the gym. He attributes positive language in the gym as one of the major facets of his teachings. “We’re reinforcing things we’re doing right,” he adds. “We’re talking about things we’re grateful for, as opposed to things that we’re doing wrong or things that are lacking in our lives. That idea radiates through our physical fitness and mindset.” By November 2012, Amundson’s gym reached 100 members, which was his ideal capacity. Currently, there’s a waitlist of about 50 people to get into his gym’s CrossFit classes, but every Saturday at 10 a.m., he offers a free workout that is open to the public. CrossFit classes are offered four times in the morning and four times in the evening, every weekday. Amundson offers private training by appointment, and works with professional UFC fighters, Jiu-Juitsu practioners, and boxers. “Everyone, regardless of your experience level, trains together,” he says. “In any given class, we can have Olympic-level athletes training alongside people who haven’t been exercising in twenty years. The environment we create is very loving and supportive, and everyone trains together as a team”. Adriana Torres, 26, of Santa Cruz recently joined CrossFit Amundson because she wanted to feel healthy and be pushed to do more. “The experience here is so unique, and I think it’s better than the gym,” Torres says. “You’re a part of a team that pushes you. You can really feel the encouragement and motivation.” Amundson notes that CrossFit is not like fitness boot camps, where they congratulate you upon reaching your goals and send you on your way. “CrossFit is a lifetime,” he explains.

“It’s an understanding that fitness is a part of life. I bring in this concept of longevity, and my goal for the athlete when they join my gym is to inspire them to be physically, mentally, and spiritually fit for the rest of their life.” Amundson, who also teaches Krav Maga in his gym, works for CrossFit Inc., which allows him to teach seminars and lecture on the warrior spirit of CrossFit around the world. “I learn during my travels, and I bring that course content and the information I’ve learned back in to the gym,” he says. “My teachings are always relevant and new, and challenging for the athlete in their mind, body and spirit”. Another unique teaching component of Amundson’s is the “Question of the Week,” which can range from simple questions like, “What are you grateful for?” to “What is your purpose in life?” On the day that the question is proposed, the workout is shorter, but that time is substituted with a period of contemplation, reflection, and journaling. “We’re teaching people to think deeply about their life, purpose, and how they can best give back and serve,” he says. The definition of CrossFit, according to Amundson, is “constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement.” The workouts are scalable to fit the needs and the physical capacity of the individual, which allows the average individual to participate in CrossFit. “Many gyms are promoting the physique to look a certain way,” says Amundson. “We care about what the mind, body, and spirit can do. We’re chasing performance.” 3703 Portola Drive, Santa Cruz. Visit crossfitamundson.com. | Kim Reyes

Cat Willis, director, founded the organization in 2011 and officially opened its doors in Feb. 2012. She has been dancing all her life, professionally training since 20 years old and studying in places as far away as Jamaica and Ghana, but now puts all of her energy into her new and growing center. Willis says speech can be communicated through movement, and that movement is trans-cultural. Willis wishes, in establishing the center, to create more diversity in Santa

Cruz, and celebrate more the culture already here. She also wants to create a space where artists can perfect their art and teach, and create “really high art.” With no cultural dance classes for children existing previously in Santa Cruz, she also wishes to fill that gap for a really multi-generational community, accessible to many—through scholarships the center provides. “I love the idea that there would be a place that’s sort of a centerpiece within a city where people could come and learn about other cultures through movement and dance,” Willis says.

With more than 15 teaching artists, the Tannery Dance & Cultural Center sees the attendance of hundreds of people on a weekly basis, ranging from 5 months and up. Classes include yoga, pilates, capoeira, kickboxing, and African dance. Some of the hottest classes currently are the Haitian Folkloric, AfroHouseHop, and Modern Dance classes. The center recently announced in National Dance Week a new resident dance company called Diaspora, which will reside at the center. They will soon be performing throughout the Santa Cruz and San Francisco Bay area. 227-6770, tanneryworlddance.com. | Mikaela Todd

Flashback to the past with Santa Cruz Swing Club, founded by Chuck Dicks, one of 12 co-organizers that run the organization. Originating in 1992, this lively dozen holds a “monthly dance party” at the Mid-County Senior Center in Capitola, an all-volunteer-comprised club, and all money made at these dances stays and goes back into the club’s next dance. “I’ve danced all my life,” Dicks says of his long swing career. “I’m 72 right now, so I was a teenager when swing dance was really popular.” His interest has been contagious. Dicks says up to 100 people attend the monthly dances, but about 400 people are officially on their mailing list. He says there is so much interest in swing because not only is it a hobby, it can also be exercise. Many group members compete locally as well. But Dicks’ favorite thing about swing is the music: “When that music comes on, it inspires me to get up and move,” says Dicks. santacruzswingclub.com. | MT

If there’s one thing Santa Cruz does not want for, it is artistic expression. And artistic expression finds its home—since 1978—in the Santa Cruz Ballet Theater (SCBT), where petite, junior and senior companies are classically trained in ballet. Longtime owners of the studio and artistic directors of SCBT, Robert Kelley and Diane Cypher, have been with the institution since 1999. They continue to carry on the legacy of the original founder, Jean Dunphy, with a slightly different style. You may have seen Santa Cruz Ballet Theater in Concert in March 2013 at the Crocker Theater at Cabrillo College, where the performing companies blended classical ballet with Taiko drumming—at first glance an inventive pairing. “It’s really quite amazing to watch the ones that really stick with it, and also how that affects the rest of their life,” Cypher says of the students. “They learn discipline, about being on time, about working with other people. Dancing is a community thing.” Take note: The company’s revered production of “The Nutcracker” continues to shine annually. Auditions for children’s roles take place Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 and adult roles on Sunday, Sept. 15. Visit scbt.org. | MT

PATE’S PASSION

STEVE KUEHL

Well-known fitness instructor has got the moves

Lee Pate, who was just voted best class instructor by GT readers, proves time and time again that she is the best at making someone feel good about themselves through exercise. Having been bullied in her high school years because of being overweight, then later suffering a humiliating slander from a poor fitness instructor, Pate felt virtually lost in not wanting to exercise. But with the help of her family (that was populated with aerobics instructors), she found a way to overcome these personal image obstacles and gathered an impressive arts education, later mastering in exercise physiology. She then earned her faculty status at San Jose State, excelling at teaching fitness programs there for the last 18 years. Pate now heads an exercise program at Cabrillo Fitness titled R.I.P.P.E.D. Her core values in helping people learn about themselves through exercise centers on the work being fun, especially for those that are beginning their path toward fitness. Having experienced a R.I.P.P.E.D. class recently, we felt newly motivated and realized why she won the award; her vivacious and heartfelt personality never

tired in the 60 minutes of working out—and her students could feel that. Cabrillo Fitness is located at 6200 Soquel Drive in Aptos, call 475-5979 to check for her schedule of classes.

GET R.I.P.P.E.D. A self-titled “plateau proof fitness formula,” the acronym is Resistance, Intervals, Power, Plyometrics and Endurance, as the workout portion, along with diet suggestions to help you “attain and maintain your physique in ways that are fun, safe, doable and extremely effective.” The program was created by nowCEO Terry Shorter in 2008. Since then it has spread like wildfire across the country. The segments of each session include dynamic stretching, resistance exercises, cardio intervals, power sections, sports-based athletic movements and endurance—all in that order. The diet part can be facilitated through their website, and Shorter is now introducing R.I.P.P.E.D. for kids and with instructors like Lee Pate—it is obvious how this exercise model continues to grow and succeed. PLEASURE POINT YOGA

Aimee Nitzberg has spent 13 years as a yoga instructor and has owned three previous yoga studios. She has now been an owner of Pleasure Point Yoga for a year and a half, a studio that is modest in size but large in potential. After taking a brief hiatus from yoga, Nitzberg re-entered the world reinvigorated, and ready to re-tackle her longterm passion for the art. When opening Pleasure Point Yoga, she wanted an intimate and simple space where she could teach authentically. With almost zero marketing and a relatively slower start, the studio has come to grow, although still small in numbers. The methods used are vinyasa flow (either sweaty or mixed) and yin yoga. “There’s a lot more freedom to be creative and explore,” Nitzberg says. Restorative yoga, a fairly new phenomenon in yoga practice is now being offered at Village Yoga by owners Sally Adams and Amy Mihal. Celebrating 12 years last week, Village Yoga studio offers restorative, bikram and vinyasa yoga. Adams says restorative yoga is the “study of ease,” and offers people a quiet space to unplug for an hour and a half, go inward, and get comfortable physically and emotionally. Adams says it offers a chance for people to drop into a deep relaxation, and it’s the “missing link” with yoga practices. “People swarmed to it because it’s so different to anything that’s being offered,” Adams says. “People have said to me, ‘I didn’t even know I was craving that.’” 425-9642, bikramyogasantacruz.com. | MT 34 l GT ACTIVE

FITNESS BY OSMOSIS When we go to see mind-blowing, gravitydefying feats of athleticism, such as the Santa Cruz Warriors, or tattoo-covered, bodychecking savagery on roller skates—the Santa Cruz Derby Girls—we're not necessarily thinking, “Get me in that game.” But there is something enthralling, energizing and deeply satisfying about watching our home teams do what they do best, and knowing that those swift, passionate and driven athletes are representatives of Santa Cruz. And, of course, they put on one hell of a show. The point is, the Santa Cruz Warriors and the Derby Girls (as well as our many high

WHAT’S

EATING YOU?

THE HIDDEN DILEMMA: Eating disorders and the recovery that awaits by Andrea Wachter 44 l GT ACTIVE

GT / HEALTH

A

An eating disorder could equally be called a thinking disorder. So many unkind thoughts plague the minds of people who battle their body and food. As people overcome eating disorders, they realize that it’s their thinking, way more than their body that has been the cause of their suffering. A critical internal dialogue (or more accurately monologue!) causes anxiety and/or depression. To recover from an eating disorder a person must retrain their brain and learn how to challenge rather than believe every thought their mind conjures up. Our culture has programmed us to see foods in

terms of “good” and “bad.” We need to upgrade that program and learn to see food in terms of nourishment and periodic pleasure rather than constant comfort, punitive punishment or sweet sedative. In the book I co-wrote, “The Don’t Diet, Live-It Workbook,” we call this new paradigm a “Live-It.” A Live-It is about living with food rather than avoiding it or overdoing it. Learning to Live-It means finding a balance between movement and rest. Many people exercise with an internal whip that tells them what to do. Others find it hard to move at all. A Live-It allows people to move in ways they enjoy and rest without an ounce of guilt. Learning how to cope with emotions is another component of a Live-It. In the same way that we categorize foods as good and bad, many people believe there are good and bad feelings. All emotions are natu-

ral and when we welcome them, they pass. Many of us were taught to stuff down our feelings, which causes depression and/or addiction. A Live-It involves welcoming all feelings, alleviating the need to numb them unnaturally. It is possible to retrain your brain. It is possible to eat only when you are physically hungry and tend to your emotions when you are emotionally hungry. It is possible to move in ways you love and rest without guilt. It is possible to learn to Live-It! Andrea Wachter is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has expertise in: eating disorders, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, grief and relationship struggles. NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

The educated staff at Way of Life in Capitola specializes in wellness and nutrition, and recommends these seven topselling supplements.

C Omega-3: Derived from fish oil and plants like flax, the essential fatty acid Omega-3 helps to prevent cardiovascular disease, has antiinflammatory effects, and may reduce the symptoms of depression.

C Multi-vitamins: For those that may not get enough nutrition in their diet, there is the multi-vitamin. One pill a day may keep more than just the doctor away.

C Vitamin-D: Skin produces Vitamin D naturally when exposed to sunlight, but for an individual who needs to stay out of the sun, has a weakened immune system, or is at risk for osteoporosis vitamin D may be helpful.

C Co-Q 10: The vitamin-like substance known as Co-Q 10 assists in the production of the body’s energy, and research shows that it reduces blood pressure in patients with hypertension, and can reverse the damage done by free radicals, especially in skin cells.

C Calcium: Paired with vitamin D, the

anny Keith, founder of the surf and skate, hunger-fighting nonprofit Grind Out Hunger, empowers the youth of Santa Cruz, harnessing their drive and energy for action sports and creativity, and directing it into positive change for the community. The nonprofit’s mission is to instill kids with leadership values and show that they can have a major impact in the fight against childhood hunger and malnutrition. Both Keith and the nonprofit entity took first places in GT's “Best Of” community poll— Keith for “Best Mover and Shaker,” and Grind Out Hunger for “Best Local Nonprofit.” Keith's energy, which, as a lifelong surfer himself, has resonated powerfully with Santa Cruz's youngest surfers, skaters, musicians, and driven kids who simply want to help. Between Keith, his growing militia of hunger fighters, and innovative social media collaborations with celebrity singers like Chris Rene, James Durbin and Tess Dunn, and partnerships with organizations like Santa Cruz Warriors, Grind Out Hunger pushes onward at full throttle. Keith says he approaches collaboration with the youth as making a deal—not telling them what's right or what's wrong or what they should do, but

simply explaining to them that they have the power to make a positive difference in the lives of other kids, just like them. “It's a way to ingrain in them the purpose of positive choices, and getting them make those choices because of the way it makes them feel,” he says. “Not because of what's been preached to them. What that's done is it's firmly placed the choices they make in their own hands.” Get involved at the Grind Out Hunger Headquarters, 912 41st, Ave., Santa Cruz. Learn more at grindouthunger.org. The Well Being Center Making the Mind/Body Connection

48 l GT ACTIVE

Without the cracks, pops, and twists associated with conventional chiropractors, John and Christina Amaral of the Well Being Center in Soquel employ more subtle techniques to relieve the weary minds and injured bodies of their patients. “We really look at the whole person,” says Dr. John Amaral. “We look at what’s going on physically in the body, and also what’s happening with someone mentally and emotionally.” The Amarals are both licensed practitioners of traditional chiropractic medicine, but their passion lies in a modality called Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), a form of bodywork pioneered by their longtime mentor Donald Epstein, D.C. Take note: The Well Being Center recently won top honors in 2013 Best Of Santa Cruz Readers’ Poll.

“We use a very light touch, oftentimes just barely touching the body in very specific areas,” says John. “It starts a process of tension release, and at the same time the person becomes more aware of what that tension was related to.” The yin to John’s yang, his wife and business partner, Dr. Christina Amaral, also specializes in NSA, but she brings her own unique approach to each patient. “People can access different parts of themselves that they wouldn’t with just me, or maybe they wouldn’t with just him,” she says. “When people come to see the two of us, they get very well-rounded care.” For more information call 475-2448 or visit wellbeingcenter.com. Dr. Amaral offers free introductory workshops at the Well Being Center each month. | Aric Sleeper

In Tune? Get there with Acutonics Having been introduced to the benefits of acupuncture just three years ago, I had once been skeptical of the process and above all, the needles. But the ills I sought relief from were treated, so when given the chance to discover more about Resonation Acupuncture (known as Acutonics, or the use of tuning forks and sound vibration in conjunction with acupuncture) I was intrigued. Katie Briggs, a local licensed acupuncturist who graduated from Five Branches nine years ago, specializes in this technique. I scheduled a session with her and she allowed my regular practitioner to sit in with us to observe and take pictures. Katie offers a quaint studio treatment room within a oneminute walk to the beaches by 16th Avenue. She has lived in Santa Cruz for more than 20 years, having also graduated from UCSC and traveled to China to further study her acupuncture field, followed by an in-depth training of Acutonics in New Mexico. Briggs explained that the sound of vibration is really effective for individuals who

50 l GT ACTIVE

may be over-stimulated with needles or be intimidated by the idea of needle insertion, or it might be that they are in so much pain that the needles could cause the patient further issues. Briggs originally came across this therapy when she had a nerve condition that was not responding to any kind of touch or acupuncture. Briggs’ goal as a practitioner is to solicit a deep level of relaxation. She explained that these vibrations also work well with boney outcroppings, in addition to the rib area of the liver and lungs. After the initial patient/practitioner interview, she placed some heating pads on areas of my body that helped with relaxation and the needle. Her needle work was deft and painless. But when she started the tuning fork resonations, I felt a whole new wave of calm and, literally, a body resolution. She even used several large gongs toward the end whose sounds helped me recollect my world travels. A soothing and worthy experience. 234-6616, resonationacupuncture.com. | SK

SEEING

Specialized Aviation puts a new spin on Adventure Merging a helicopter tour with a jaunt for a wine tasting at Talbott Vineyards? Twist our arm. But that idea is just one of many spinning around the creative ethers of Specialized Aviation. Located near the Watsonville Municipal Airport, the local company boasts an onslaught of outdoor fun—to say the least—but this year, it captured our attention yet again with its original wine-tasting tour. This may be an ideal package for the romantic set and the copter can accommodate two couples.

56 l GT ACTIVE

How it works: First, locals are offered some memorable eye-candy with a tour of the Monterey Bay and then things move inland where the copter lands and allows its thrill seekers to delve into some of the area’s more memorable wines at a local winery. “Helicopters and wine tasting go together like a great wine/food pairing,” says Chris Gularte, owner of Specialized Aviation. “For those who enjoy wine and adventure, spending an afternoon hovering and seeing the

region’s winescapes from the air and ground is the perfect blend of indulgence and romance that we all want and need from time to time.” There’s plenty more to appreciate here, too. A 20-minute Santa Cruz tour, which we checked out and is impressive, runs $99 per person. Other tours vary in prices, but take note of The Carmel tour. At 40 minutes, it includes striking views of Elkhorn Slough, Monterey, Carmel and Pebble Beach. The Big Sur Tour, at 60 minutes, stands out too—how

can it not? If you’ve ever wondered what Point Lobos, Point Sur lighthouse and places beyond might look like from the air, this is the ideal tour. Clever marketing also make this portal unique. For instance, The Photo Safari Tour will take you across the Monterey Bay— and narration from the pilot is a nice touch. Those interested in learning how to operate a copter take note: Specialized Aviation also instructs future pilots. Oh, and not to be left out: airplane tours. In the mood to charter a flight? (Why not?) You can customize your own flight/tour, which can take you up to Napa, down to Santa Barbara or Los Angeles and other points in between. But the real stars of the show are the aircrafts themselves. The training helicopter, a Robinson R22 Beta II, is heralded as one of the best-maintained helicopters in California. It seats two people and boasts a futuristic look. Meanwhile, the Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter gets plenty of attention—the four-seat helicopter can cruise at 120 mph for three hours. And we couldn’t take our eyes off of the 2007 Diamond DA40. Considered to be one of the safest aircraft to fly and train in, the fourseat airplane offers a full glass cockpit. Again, tres futuristic. What Specialized seems to do best, though, is strive to work closely with its customers to design/offer the best trip/tour. The idea is to have a fun, memorable time. It’s also nice to see several discounts offered. For instance, if you purchase three tickets, you can save about 55 percent on some outings. Learn more at specializedheli.com.
