FROM THE PRESIDENT HIGHLIGHTING THE GOODWILLSUNCOAST COMMUNITY

In any Goodwill, you can find people with unique hobbies and interests from many backgrounds. That’s why we’re dedicating the Winter/Spring 2023 GoodWorld News to the members of the Goodwill-Suncoast community. All the wonderful people in this issue encapsulate the Goodwill mission of lifelong learning and the power of work in their own distinct way.

Enthusiasts and collectors from all walks of life find commonality browsing Goodwill shelves. That’s why we’ve created the Local Thrifter Spotlight, a column dedicated to a few of our very fashionable shoppers. Also in this issue, we put the spotlight on a couple who have built an incredible collection of a certain piece of holiday décor (hint: it’s on the cover!).

Goodwill owes much of its success to the hard-working volunteers that make our events and programs possible. We thank all our volunteers, but we’d like to especially thank Chris “Boss” Bosley, who has provided essential work to the Goodwill BookWorks program!

BRIGHT STUDENTS CHARGE TOWARDS AN ELECTRIC FUTURE

Earlier this year, Goodwill-Suncoast partnered with Junior Achievement 3DE, a nonprofit youth organization dedicated to fostering growth in the areas of financial literacy and work readiness. For five weeks, Goodwill and JA3DE worked with 120 freshman students from Gibbs High School to explore solutions to real-world transportation challenges experienced by Goodwill-Suncoast. The students developed analytical and critical thinking skills by composing a cost-benefit analysis of electric vehicles for Goodwill’s trucking fleet.

The students’ hard work culminated on December 7th at Goodwill’s Gandy location, where they presented their research to a large crowd that included other students, staff, and volunteer business coaches. After the presentations, the students and Junior Achievement 3DE staff toured the facilities for a behind-the-scenes look at Goodwill’s other daily operations.

Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer that provides services without regard to race, spiritual beliefs, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, socioeconomic status or disability. If you need accommodation or assistance in accessing any area of employment or program services, please let us know.

With the new season comes new goals. If your list includes being more environmentally or fiscally conscious, thrifting is a great way to accomplish either! Further in this issue, you can find some helpful tips for making the most out of your trips to Goodwill. Happy thrifting!

Sincerely,

“Goodwill-Suncoast is pleased to partner with Junior Achievement’s 3DE program to help strengthen the critical and analytical thinking skills of our student cohort while educating them on the Goodwill mission and showing them the importance of lifelong learning,” says Jim Hampton, Goodwill-Suncoast’s Volunteer Specialist. We are excited to continue our four-year partnership with Junior Achievement 3DE and see more students flourish!

Staff worked with the students to hone their presentation and research skills.

BUILDING UNITY THROUGH CAMP COMMUNITY

Everyone could use a little R&R. When Tiffany McGlorthon, a former Goodwill-Suncoast employee, launched TeQuilla’s Twin Tower Resort & Mini-Camp (TTT), she had a vision of providing respite to children with special needs along with their caregivers. McGlorthon started the organization (named after her daughter, Miss TeQuilla) to offer resources to assist caregivers.

WHO’S THE BOSS?

When Chris “Boss” Bosley learned about Goodwill-Suncoast BookWorks, he was eager to volunteer. An avid reader himself, Chris was drawn to the opportunity of supporting childhood literacy and community-building.

At the start of the pandemic, when Goodwill announced BookWorks’ temporary hiatus, Chris immediately reached out to the team and asked about opportunities to help keep the program running. Chris joined other volunteers in hosting virtual book readings, book sorting, and deliveries to various Tampa Bay schools. Time after time, Chris has gone above-and-beyond in helping BookWorks thrive!

To learn more about Goodwill-Suncoast’s volunteer opportunities for high schoolers, please visit: https://goodwill-suncoast.org/ high-school-student-volunteers/

McGlorthon continues to exemplify the Goodwill mission in her organization; at the core of the TTT’s mission is championing mental and physical wellness at all ages. One of their primary outlets for community building is through community field days, which allow children to exercise and socialize with volunteers and other children while their caregivers get valuable downtime.

The organization also recently launched a program within the NFL Flag League. Through this program, TTT participants and volunteers can compete and network with other teams in the country! The organization’s involvement with the NFL Flag League is a major step towards increased camaraderie and awareness among the wider community.

McGlorthon’s ultimate goal is to open up a physical camp tailored for individuals with special needs and their caregivers. “There are hospitals to take care of the ill, and resorts for those looking for vacations, but never a combined institution that can provide for both,“ she notes. McGlorthon hopes to create a haven that can provide on all fronts! As of this writing, the organization is in the process of looking for land for the new facility. We look forward to seeing the TeQuilla’s Twin Tower Resort & Mini-Camp blossom!

Chris’ presence is encouraging and uplifting, and his work ethic has garnered a reputation. The other volunteers sometimes joke that if a school is far or hard-to-reach, “the Boss will do it!” Chris has been volunteering with BookWorks since May 2019 and his dedication has been invaluable to the program!

Thank you Boss for all of your hard work and dedication!

Call (727) 523-1512 and ask for BookWorks or email bookworks @goodwill-suncoast.com

The Mini-Camp is a growing community. The most recent TTT field day included 26 participants, their caregivers, and several vendors.

Fun fact: Chris’ favorite book is Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life by Admiral William H. McRaven.
“I want to help boost the level of reading across the entire community.”
-Chris “Boss” Bosley

Flashback to late 2020: Everyone is indoors. People are looking for any way to pass the time: clearing the Netflix catalog, becoming fitness enthusiasts, learning to bake bread, the list goes on. As the world turns away, Tony and Ally Espi become enthralled with a unique hobby: repairing snow globes!

Hobbyists in fashion, music, and art all find common ground on Goodwill shelves. Tony and Ally Espi are a couple that through thrifting found a unique passion: repairing and collecting snow globes.

In true DIY spirit, the Espis’ hobby started with a curiosity: could they fix some pieces they found while thrifting? Age and wear can bring about issues in snow globes, such as muddy water, cracked glass, or broken rotors. Through some internet sleuthing, the couple learned that all these problems were fixable. Just like that, they were hooked!

The couple would then spend the next year gathering snow globes in need of repair. During the peak of their collecting phase, Tony would visit thrift stores, estate sales, and flea markets for snow globes several times a week, and even became a regular at the Goodwill Gandy Outlet. “Over 90% of our collection comes from Goodwill,” he says.

Ally loved being able to come home from her public-facing dayjob to a haul of snow globes. “It was a nice way to unwind after a long day of work,” she fondly recalls.

Since the initial few snow globes, the Espis have accrued an impressive collection. Their apartment has over 500 snow globes on display, and the couple note that they have 574 in storage waiting to be repaired or used for parts.

The couple may have initially got into this hobby on a whim, but have found themselves settled in a welcoming online community. Their videos consistently get waves of supportive comments. “We get a lot of colorful people, in a good way!” he said about the enthusiasm of viewers. “There’s a handful of commenters that drop by in every video, and some leave flattering long-winded messages.” Commenters range from fellow snow globe enthusiasts to randoms with passing interest in watching repair work.

Tony and Ally Espi initially came to Goodwill-Suncoast’s attention through Darrell Courson, a GoodwillSuncoast employee! This business partnership came about as Darrell and the Goodwill team realized the difficulty in accepting donated snow globes. Donated snow globes are heavy, fragile, and may contain unconfirmed liquids. The Espis’ hobby provides Goodwill an outlet for these used snow globes and ensures them a new loving home!

“We also get a lot of viewers with disabilities.” The couple noted that many of these viewers found the videos as a way to relax and decompress, even if they have no interest in picking up snow globe repair as a hobby.

Tony and Ally hope that their channel inspires others to repair snow globes, or take up any restoration hobby in general! As they recall their journey with the hobby, their faces glow. “It really is therapeutic,” Tony remarks, “We love being able to see an end product after our hard work.” He also makes sure to note the low barrier of entry to the hobby. “You can do [snow globe repairs] with simple tools found around your home, like a glue gun or basic screwdrivers.”

Thank you to Tony and Ally for the interview, and for showing off a unique example of giving thrifted things a second life.

Thrift Like a Pro: 5 Tips for a Great Goodwill Haul 5

Have you ever seen someone’s thrift haul only to wonder how they found so many cool and stylish items? The concept of thrifting can be daunting, but luckily, there are certified tips and strategies to maximizing your visit to the thrift store. Whether you’re a beginner thrifter or a seasoned secondhand shopper, these tips will help you make the most of your thrift store experience!

Go with a group!

Everything’s better with friends, and that includes thrifting! Thrifting with friends can allow your group to cover a wider ground in the store, maximizing the efficiency of your time. Different tastes and perspectives can also lead to cooler finds you may have otherwise missed. Perhaps your friends will spot something in a section that you normally skip!

Become your own tailor

When it comes to thrift shopping, a little DIY skill can go a long way! Learning basic tailoring skills like attaching buttons or hemming pants can open up many clothing choices that would be otherwise unavailable. Tailoring is also an excellent way to breathe new life into your unwanted clothes. Upcycling old clothing is a stylish and environmentally-friendly way to refresh your closet.

Know what you’re looking for

While it can be sometimes fun to aimlessly browse Goodwill shelves, you may find yourself with option paralysis, wasting time, and ultimately walking away with nothing. Having an idea of your next clothing purchase will save you time and headache. Instead of sifting through each piece on every rack, asking yourself “How will this work in my closet?”, scan the aisles for your favorite clothing qualities (color, fabric, clothing type, etc).

Get to know your stores

Knowing the days when a store restocks, where items are typically on display, and the types of goods that are typically donated are all valuable pieces of information. Additionally, thrift stores may also have their own unique deals that can save you money. For example, Goodwill-Suncoast locations have a weekly rotating sale on color-tagged items!

Thrift regularly and be patient

Thrifting isn’t a one-time deal. Since thrift stores constantly shuffle their inventory in and out, every week is a new adventure with thrifting. Don’t be discouraged if you walk away from a thrift store empty handed as the next visit will always be a little different. Hit up your local Goodwills regularly to find exciting clothes and goods!

If you have your own thrifting tips you’d like to share with the world, DM us on social media and it may be featured!

NEW LEGISLATION POSITIVELY IMPACTS CHARITABLE GIVING

During the final week of 2022, President Biden signed The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 into law. This includes the Secure Act 2.0, which addresses areas related to retirement planning. This act expands the definition of qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) and begins indexing the direct gift amount of $100,000 for inflation starting in 2024. The bill also expands the definition to include certain distributions to create life income gifts, specifically charitable gift annuities (CGA) and charitable remainder trusts (CRT).

Hello my thrifting friends! As we all know, Florida never really gets to experience the fall season. However, I found the perfect plaid jacket for the few chilly days we do get to experience. I recently thrifted this from a Goodwill men’s section! I love how it’s extremely comfy and versatile. This is definitely a staple item I’m proud to add to my closet.

Additionally, an IRA owner can now make a one-time distribution for a CGA or CRT with a maximum of $50,000. The distribution must be completed in a single year and can only be used once during the lifetime of the IRA owner. Additional stipulations exist, and IRA owners should carefully review all details before proceeding in a distribution.

If you are an IRA owner and would like to convert a portion into income (while also supporting Goodwill-Suncoast), we would like to discuss this Legacy gift with you. This is not legal, financial, or tax advice so we encourage you to discuss this with your professional advisors to determine if this will match your goals and objectives.

My favorite reply after someone comments on an outfit is “I found it at Goodwill!” I enjoy when I can put together a complete outfit consisting entirely of thrift finds. This blazer, shirt, and trousers are all recent finds that highlight how versatile thrift finds can be.
