Goodwill-Suncoast Annual Report 2023-2024
Here at Goodwill-Suncoast, we have so many ways to help people on their pathway to transforming their lives through lifelong learning and the power of work. We celebrate our people and programs as they bolster individuals’ journeys with services that include: job leads and referrals; career planning and exploration; resume and cover letter development assistance; guidance and tips on effective job searching; soft skills training; basic computer literacy classes; computer and internet access; assistance with filling out unemployment and application forms; referrals to community resources; a full-service staffing agency; helping students and adults with learning challenges find job training and paid internships; affordable housing options for seniors and people with disabilities; community re-entry services; promoting childhood literacy; free gowns for young women in need; assisting 8th-grade students with basic budgeting practices; a volunteer program for high school students; court-ordered community service; and catering services … just to name a few.
With so many ways to help, it’s good to take a moment to acknowledge Goodwill’s impact.
Overall, Goodwill-Suncoast served over 77,000 people this year and placed over 1,300 in jobs. Through our vast breadth of programs and services, participants found their footing while embarking on new paths.
Community Employment Services provided training and placement assistance to 108 young people and adults with disabilities.
We held our first-ever graduation ceremony as Pathways Forward, Pathways Home, and our Re-entry Residents celebrated 138 women obtaining certifications and degrees across multiple disciplines. You’ll learn about one of the graduates in this Annual Report.
BookWorks turned 25 this January and has continued to thrive. Our volunteers gave out 68,055 books to 50,006 deserving children.
Belle of the Ball helped 212 young ladies find the perfect dress for that special occasion while learning about our many services.
Through our Job Connection Centers inside Goodwill stores in St. Petersburg, Riverview, and Hillsborough, as well as our virtual services site (myjobconnection.org), Goodwill-Suncoast assisted more than 2,700 people during 2023.
We offered 1,292 courses on the Goodwill-Suncoast Learning Center, where 1,118 completed 10,631 individual courses and 8,350 hours of training. There were 6,167
certificates of completion earned, demonstrating a strong commitment to lifelong learning.
The Annual Hippie Dash was held on May 11th in Safety Harbor, with a record number of participants. In all, 1,530 racers registered for the 10k, 5k, and 1-mile Walk, Woof & Roll Event and the Flower Child Fun Run.
We provided homes for 407 people in apartments with barrier-free options, rental assistance, and service coordination. Residents enjoyed the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables, a turkey giveaway, and food baskets during the holidays.
Our Career Navigation Services assisted 327 Goodwill team members; 29 received tuition assistance, and 62 earned credentials.
All of these services are only possible because of the support of our community partners and the people who donate to and shop at Goodwill.

Cyntina | Goodwill-Suncoast Re-entry Program
Go Getter. Survivor. Healer. Leader. A testament to resilience and transformation.
Cyntina learned early on the values of leadership and compassion—gifts passed down from her mother and grandmother, both of whom had been beacons of hope and healing. And it would be that leadership and compassion that helped her through challenging times.
Her journey through life was marked by struggles and setbacks that lead to her being imprisoned on three separate occasions. The first two stints were brief, just a few months each, but the third was a harsh reality: fifteen long years with no chance for early release.
The day she started her sentence was a day marked by faces hardened by time and circumstance; she avoided eye contact as she entered.
“Looking around at all these people, I didn’t respond to anyone who said hi or anything. I just looked down or away.”
Yet even in those first dark moments, Cyntina’s leadership and compassion began to provided her safe harbor.
And as the days passed, she started to connect with others, finding solace in the stories of fellow inmates and the guidance of prison staff. Her interactions with the “lifers” and her ability to listen provided a new perspective for herself, and those around her. Determined to make the most of her time, she pursued her GED with fervor, driven by a newfound sense of purpose. “I needed to mature,” she would later reflect, recognizing that the long
sentence had given her the time to evolve and overcome mistakes from her past.
Cyntina embraced education, work, and spirituality with a resolve that metaphorically changed her environment to one more resembling a university than prison; the walls of her confinement became a backdrop for personal growth.
Cyntina’s next step in her transformation back into the world came through the Suncoast Re-entry Program; she was excited to continue her growth at a reentry facility that placed importance on lifelong learning. Once again, Cyntina’s faith in herself, bolstered by the support of the entire Re-entry team, has given her strength to face each day with courage and determination. Cyntina has overcome her fear of being in the real world, taking city buses to her job at Burger King, and she’s making the most of her time by continuing to improve herself.
Cyntina has obtained a Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, and Med Tech certificates while participating in the program at Goodwill. And she plans to start EMT training in January after release. Cyntina’s vision for her future is clear: to build a new life where she can be present for her grandchildren, a commitment born from her desire to make up for the time she lost with her own children.
“When I finish my time at Suncoast in December, I’m going to live with my family and keep my job at Burger King until I can find a nursing position.”
In every step she’s taken, Cyntina has carried with her the legacy of her mother and grandmother, the strength of her 17 brothers (yes, 17), and the unwavering faith that had guided her through her darkest times. Her story will not just be one of redemption but a beacon of hope for anyone facing their own trials, proving that with faith, resilience, and support, transformation is possible.
An Unexpected Journey: A Pathway to Confidence
Josiah | JET After School Program
Josiah, a determined 17-year-old junior, embarked on a transformative journey when he joined the JET After School Program for the 2023-2024 school year. The program, designed to address the gap left by technological disconnection and the lack of authentic relationships crucial for the workplace, became a lifeline for Josiah.
Josiah was resolute in not letting his disabilities—cerebral palsy and hearing impairment—define his limitations. Despite his determination, he felt anxious about how his physical challenges might affect his ability to handle job training.
At the outset, Josiah’s uncertainty was palpable. His concerns about his mobility and potential performance hindered his initial confidence. However, the program’s focus on building foundational soft skills and fostering workforce engagement became a pathway to success. The Workforce Specialist provided Josiah with personalized encouragement, clear instructions, and adjusted his workload to accommodate his needs. This support was a testament to the program’s goal of laying a solid foundation of soft skills essential for today’s workplace culture.
As time went on, Josiah’s confidence began to blossom. He started to take on more tasks with growing assurance, and his achievements reflected the program’s impact in bridging the social skills gap
that modern technology often exacerbates.
But tech has its place. Josiah engaged with weekly micro-learning lessons through Kahoot.com, tackling topics like professionalism, communication, social skills, goal setting, and workplace culture. Initially hesitant, Josiah’s familiarity with the platform grew, leading to improved performance and a new-found appreciation for the lessons.
A particularly poignant moment in Josiah’s journey came after he completed the 3rd Flight of the Program. Josiah became emotional as he shared the profound difference the JET After School Program had made in his life. He reflected on how, without it, he would have spent his time playing video games at home rather than working toward his goal of becoming more independent and gaining valuable work experience. Now, he was more confident, professional, and eager to continue his training with another job program.
Josiah’s growth and success reaffirms that with the right pathway, support and determination, every individual can overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Above and Beyond: Paving the Way to Success
Nick | Junior Ambassador of Goodwill (j.a.g.) and Entrepreneur
Nick, a formidable entrepreneur with an eye for what sells, and the drive to sell it.
Since beginning his service journey with the Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill during the summer of 2022, Nick has logged 200 hours in support of the Goodwill mission, earning a Sterling Student Service Award and Silver Ambassador Pin last summer. Nick will return to dedicate more of his time in the JAG Summer program; having already logged more than the maximum required 100 hours for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. Nick certainly is a stand-out among the crowd.
In the spirit of lifelong learning and the power of work, Nick has put what he’s learned being a JAG volunteer into practice. Nick observed our Outlet Store resellers and now has established a successful online resale vintage clothing business himself. Pulling inspiration from fellow young entrepreneurs at the Gandy Outlet, Nick continues to find success and can be found there most weekends and school holidays.
Looking to pay it
forward, Nick has shared his learnings as he recruits friends to become Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill as well. Nick’s sharing of JAG extends beyond peers to his family—they supported the Junior Ambassador of Goodwill program with a substantial monetary gift at the end of calendar year 2023.
Simply said, Nick is a champion of community service.
Nick’s maturity and professionalism led to an invitation to speak at the St. Petersburg Rotary in February this year. Nick shared his JAG service journey with the crowd and impressed them with his knowledge of the Goodwill mission and the importance of giving back. This summer, Nick will represent the St. Petersburg Rotary and GoodwillSuncoast, at the week-long S4TL, Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders, hosted by Rotary at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL. Nick was chosen to be one of the two representatives.
We here at Goodwill-Suncoast are so pleased to have been part of Nick’s journey as he paves his way to what we’re sure will be a successful future.
After overhauling the entire space, our Ocala Outlet Store reopened to great fanfare. Goodwill-Suncoast Board members Bob Dobkowski and Ed Rader were in attendance, along with Bob’s wife, The Honorable Christine Dobkowski, Mayor of the City of Belleview, for the festivities. Mayor Guinn of Marion was also in attendance. The Outlet was originally open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but due to overwhelming enthusiasm, it is now open every day!
We donated hundreds of polos, collared tops, and khakis in support of the 5th Annual Langley Back to School Bash . We were one of many organizations that helped Sumter County students prepare for the 2023-24 school year.
Savannah Sipsy, Regional Director, Gulf Coast Region at U.S. Senate for Marco Rubio, toured our Goodwill-Suncoast Headquarters. From our Re-entry facility to Belle of the Ball (which she loved!), Savannah was surprised and impressed with all we do to benefit our local communities and beyond.
The summer JET Career Camps in Clearwater and Ocala delight students with behind-thescenes visits to 10 Tampa Bay, St. Pete Airport, the Pinellas Fire Department and Beasley Media Group (pictured)! The students had a blast learning about their favorite radio station!
Our re-entry residents, along with family, friends, and Goodwill-Suncoast team members, celebrated the accomplishments of 138 women who obtained certifications and degrees across multiple disciplines. Many former residents returned to walk in the ceremony; a great time was had by all!
Teams from all nine Florida Goodwill regions joined together for a Day at the Capital . Members met with both visitors and government representatives while sharing that Goodwill is ‘More Than A Store’.
During a tour of the HUB, Representative Fentrice Driskell, Minority Leader of the Florida House of Representatives , learned about the e-commerce side of Goodwill-Suncoast, including how we train our in-store teams. We also hired four specialty in-store listing associates, which increased sales by 10.4% over prior year.
Project SEARCH provides onsite job training and education for those with disabilities or barriers to employment. Pictured here are six graduates that learned, beyond the coursework, that it was their “togetherness” and “compassion” for one another that mattered the most. They figured out that by helping someone else, they could succeed as well!
Our Ambassadors Program is an opportunity for people to learn about and understand the Goodwill mission, and then take that knowledge out into the community. It’s an excellent introduction to our business model. Through fun and engaging networking events within your company, such as the one pictured here at 10 Tampa Bay, our Ambassadors are involved in meaningful community outreach, fundraising, and professional networking.
Our childhood literacy program BookWorks turned 25 in 2024! In celebration, we gave away more than 68,000 books to over 50,000 deserving children. We also refreshed the logo with a more literary type treatment!
GIS Board Chair Bob Wabbersen kindly attended the newly reimagined Celebration of Learning Luncheon, sponsored by Regions Bank. Acknowledgments were made for the GII Senior Leadership Program, earning degrees and certifications, our CORE Leadership Development, and others.
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Goodwill-Suncoast Project SEARCH Internship
Emily Brudnicki, a recent graduate of our Project SEARCH program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, first learned about it from her sister, Brittani, a previous graduate. Encouraged by her high school teacher, Emily initially hesitated to leave her two-year workbased learning program. Brittani’s enthusiasm changed Emily’s mind. She invited Emily to visit the Project SEARCH classroom and tour the hospital, helping her feel comfortable with the transition. Thanks to this support, Emily joined Project SEARCH and quickly blossomed, gaining confidence, making friends, and developing essential skills.
During Emily’s second rotation (in food service), tragedy struck when her younger sister, Tammy, was hit by a bus and hospitalized. In this difficult time, the Goodwill team rallied around Emily. Food Service Manager, Jerri Comi, supported Emily, ensuring visits to Tammy during breaks. After multiple surgeries, Tammy made a remarkable recovery, and Emily’s family expressed deep gratitude for the
emotional support they received. The bonds formed in the Project SEARCH program were invaluable, with Emily’s father highlighting the joy of seeing his daughters share lunch together.
As Emily approached graduation, a full-time job opened up in the hospital’s food service department. She applied and was thrilled to receive an offer with above-minimum wage pay and benefits. Her parents were overjoyed, appreciating how Goodwill listened to Emily’s interests and aspirations throughout the job search. Now, Emily is learning vital skills like work-life balance and time management. She plans to save her paycheck for a car, demonstrating her commitment to independence.
Grateful for her supportive work family, Emily feels valued and confident as she embarks on her professional journey.
