EN Antwerp has always held a great attraction for creative and commercial professionals. To name but a few, there’s Mercator, the man whose book of maps was actually the first one to be referred to as an ‘atlas’, the Plantin and Moretus families who made the art of printing thrive at the Vrijdagmarkt and Pieter Paul Rubens, who founded an art empire. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp is the fourth oldest art academy in Europe, where even the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Henry van de Velde, Dries van Noten and Luc Tuymans once walked in and out through the monumental gates. Our architectural diversity also makes us particularly proud. We can boast the largest Gothic cathedral in the Low Lands, the very first skyscraper on the European continent, our Central Station that is among the three most beautiful in the world, the best preserved Art Nouveau district in the Benelux, and the mother of all commodity exchanges: the Bourse of Antwerp. All in one city. Last year, the Bourse of Antwerp was given back to the community. The much-needed and very successful restoration has made this jewel in the Antwerp crown shine again. The 19th-century palace was successfully converted to meet the demands of the 21st century. In short: a lot has been happening on the banks of the Scheldt for centuries, and that will never change. NL Antwerpen heeft altijd een grote aantrekking gehad voor creatieve en commerciële vaklui. Denk maar aan Mercator, de man die met zijn verzameling landkaarten de “atlas” introduceerde. De families Plantin & Moretus die de boekdrukkunst groot maakten aan de Vrijdagmarkt. Pieter Paul Rubens die een fabriek aan kunst vervaardigde. De Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen is maar liefst de vierde oudste kunstacademie van Europa waar groten als Vincent Van Gogh, Henry Van de Velde, Dries van Noten & Luc Tuymans door de monumentale poort hebben gewandeld. Op gebied van diversiteit in de architectuur mogen we ook bijzonder trots zijn. Kijk maar eens naar de grootste gotische kathedraal van de Nederlanden, de allereerste wolkenkrabber van het Europese continent, het Centraal Station dat in de top drie staat van de schoonsten ter wereld, de best bewaarde Art Nouveauwijk in de Benelux en de moeder der beurzen in de wereld. Allemaal in één Stad. Sinds vorige jaar werd deze Handelsbeurs weer aan het volk gegegeven. De broodnodige maar zeer geslaagde restauratie heeft deze parel aan de Antwerpse kroon weer laten schitteren. Het 19e eeuwse paleis werd vertaald naar de wetten van de 21e eeuw, en met succes. Sa restauration, aussi nécessaire que réussie, est la perle flamboyante de la couronne anversoise. Ce palais commercial du 19e siècle a été mis avec brio aux normes du 21e. EN In the course of history, Antwerp experienced two exceptionally prosperous eras: the sixteenth century and the second half of the nineteenth century. And I feel that we are now embarking on our third golden age. For the first time in over a century, the city is expanding. Massive yet carefully considered construction works are going on at the Eilandje and the Nieuwe Zuid districts. It truly is an exceptional (amazing?) endeavour, which is greatly appreciated by architecture enthusiasts. The old part of the harbour was progressively abandoned over time, vacating a very large neighbourhood. It’s wonderful to know that this area still has the vibrant soul of the harbour of times past. A completely different approach was needed for the Nieuwe Zuid district. The old site of the Antwerp South railway station, which was demolished more than half a century ago, had become a completely abandoned and, above all, forgotten zone. In this area everything was really built up from scratch: sewers, streets, lighting and buildings had never before been built there. The street names honour several important architects for their work: Léon Stynen, Jos Smolderen and Jan Vanhoenacker each got their own street name sign. This brand-new district is also an example for the future, because it has the largest sustainable heating network in Flanders. Welcome to 21st century Antwerp NL Antwerpen heeft doorheen de geschiedenis twee uitzonderlijk mooie tijden mogen meemaken: de zestiende eeuw en het tweede deel van de negentiende eeuw. Ik voel dat we nu aan onze derde gouden periode zijn gekomen. Voor het eerst in meer dan een eeuw is de Stad terug aan het uitbreiden. Zowel op het Eilandje als het Nieuwe Zuid wordt gretig maar doordacht gebouwd. Het is werkelijk een speelparadijs voor architectuurliefhebbers.

Het oude deel van de haven werd meer en meer verlaten waardoor een hele grote wijk leeg kwam te staan. Het is heerlijk om te weten dat deze buurt nog de warme ziel heeft van de haven van weleer. Op het Nieuwe Zuid heeft men het helemaal anders moeten aanpakken. De oude site van het reeds meer dan een halve eeuw afgebroken Zuidstation was een verlaten en vooral vergeten zone. Hier is men werkelijk met alles from scratch begonnen: rioleringen, straten, verlichting en gebouwen werden er voor het eerst ontwikkeld. Onder de straatnamen zijn verschillende belangrijke architecten in de kijker gezet: Léon Stynen, Jos Smolderen en ook Jan Vanhoenacker kregen allemaal hun eigen straat. Deze spiksplinternieuwe wijk is ook een voorbeeld voor de toekomst, wan t je vind er bijvoorbeeld het grootste warmtenet van Vlaanderen. Welkom in de 21ste eeuw van Antwerpen. FR Tout au long de son histoire, Anvers a connu deux périodes tout à fait exceptionnelles : le 16e siècle, appelé Siècle d'or, et la seconde moitié du 19e siècle. J'ai l'impression que nous vivons une troisième période dorée. Pour la première fois depuis plus d'un siècle, la ville d'Anvers s'étend à nouveau. Un mouvement de construction savamment pensé a lieu dans des quartiers comme Eilandje ou le Nieuwe Zuid. Ce sont réellement de véritables paradis pour les amateurs d'architecture. Les anciennes parties du port ayant été délaissées par les bateaux, un quartier immense, appelé Eilandje, se libère à d'autres fins. Il est bon de savoir qu'il a conservé son âme portuaire. Dans celui du Nieuwe Zuid, il a fallu envisager la réhabilitation de façon très différente. L'ancien site de la gare du Zuid, démolie depuis plus d'un demi-siècle, était une zone désertée et surtout oubliée. Et l'on a réellement pu y repartir de zéro : conduits d'égouttage, rues, éclairage et bâtiments y ont été développés pour la première fois. Les noms de ces nouvelles rues ravivent la mémoire d'architectes importants : Léon Stynen, Jos Smolderen et Jan Vanhoenacker. Ce quartier flambant neuf est aussi un exemple pour l'avenir : on y trouve notamment le plus grand réseau de conduits de chaleur du nord du pays. Bienvenue dans l'Anvers du 21e siècle
