Joaquin Castro becomes U.S. Representative for Texas in 2013

Lackland Air Force Base and Brooke Army Medical Center are established in 1941 and 1946 respectively.

San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is established and KENS-TV begins broadcasting in 1950.

WOAI-TV begins broadcasting in 1949.

Fiesta Noche del Rio launches 1958.

San Antonio hosts Hemisfair in 1968.

Texas Folklife Festival begins in 1972.

San Antonio Botanical Garden opens and Annual Tejano Music Awards launched in 1980.

Tower of the Americas opens in 1968.

San Antonio Spurs basketball team makes San Antonio their home in 1973.

Henry Cisneros is elected mayor in 1981.

Henry B. González is elected to Congress in 1961.

Lila Cockrell is elected in 1975, San Antonio’s first female mayor.

Lamar S. Smith becomes U.S. Representative for Texas in 1987.

1960’s

In 1936, Mrs Lucy Hill Cunningham, hearing Dr. Edgar J Helms speak about Goodwill Industries on the radio, wrote Dr. Helms inquiring how a chapter could be started in her home city, San Antonio. Between 1936 and 1937, Mrs. Cunningham arranged speaking engagements for Dr. Helms and Mr. Millard J. Heath, Executive Director of the Dallas Goodwill Industries to speak to local civic leaders. She is the catalyst for establishing Goodwill in San Antonio. Our purpose and mission derive from ARTICLE II: Of Our Articles Of Incorporation “ This corporation shall provide for the religious, educational and industrial welfare of the handicapped, the needy and the dependent: by providing industrial education and the opportunity to work; by the encouragement of thrift; and by the promotion of industrial democracy and cooperation. By these means this corporation shall seek to prevent pauperism, to relieve the temporary distresses of the unfortunate, and to train the unemployed and handicapped in the self-supporting occupations. “

Ivy Taylor is elected in 2014, first AfricanAmerican, female mayor of San Antonio.

Nelson W. Wolff is elected mayor in 1991.

San Antonio is recognized for fastest growing city of the top 10 largest cities in the U.S. Exceeds 1 million in population.

San Antonio Missions is named the first World Heritage Site in Texas by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) in 2015.

Central Public Library opens in 1995.

Julian Castro is elected mayor in 2009.

San Antonio celebrates the Tricentennial anniversary of its founding in 2018.
